Finally! A Great FREE SpellChecker For OE!

Q: Finally! A Great FREE SpellChecker For OE!

Microsoft has taken a lot of heat with regards to OE 6 because in order to use their Spell Checker in Windows XP, you had to have Office 2000 or higher for it to work or mess around with registry settings. UNTIL NOW!

Here is a wonderful little spell checker that installs into all versions of OE without the need to have preinstalled Office software from Major Geeks:

It works great!

I think I got it!!! at least on my machine.

I run on Win98 SE. I used HijackThis but was not getting very far. My IE 6.0 home page was hijacked with ( When I used Windows xplorer, most, if not all of the icons were gone and I would get locked up trying to exit the window. Javascript would not work on any webpage that I visited (for example I could not delete my Yahoo mail from my machine). But strangely what was working was, if I went to the START...RUN...BROWSE. I could control some of the windows function like I could not do using Win Explorer. I would also use a shortcut to Yahoo that I had on my desktop rather than use the IE icon so when I went on to the internet, it would not try to go to the homepage.

So I got desperate. I'm not quite sure what did it but here is what I did. (I think this is everything)

In normal mode...
Using HJT, I took out just about everything on the list except for two or three items that I knew were good. I took out McAfee and others that you would not think to remove. I think I left taskmon.exe and my faxing program. There was also one protocol that would not come out by the name of V1MK.DLL. I also went to the config button on the lower right and changed all of the default search pages to a trusted site. I used Yahoo.

I used SpyBot-Search & Destroy, it found some items but I am not sure if this was the one that did it. It found a number of things and cleaned it up.

AdAware also cleaned a few thin... Read more

Microsoft currently has it's best designer working on Windows 7 addons :-

Leaner Windows 7 Will Let You Add Features ? la Carte

It may be hard to believe that Microsoft is prepping a version of Windows without e-mail, calendar, and instant messaging apps. After all, some of those features have been bundled with Windows almost from the start; with Vista, the list got longer, including additions such as Windows Photo Gallery and Vista Parental Controls. But Microsoft officials say the plan for Windows 7 is to deliver a lean operating system that lets you add the features you like, choosing ? la carte from a suite of Windows Live Essentials programs you download.

Some applets are already available in beta form at; more are expected to debut in mid-November. All have (or will have) hooks to free services such as online file storage, photo sharing, and collaboration tools.

Windows Live general manager Brian Hall says that stripping accessory programs from Windows will allow Microsoft to focus on the development of the operating system and streamline its support (service packs should be smaller-and possibly fewer-for a smaller OS). Hall adds that a "cleaner" operating system eliminates potential confusion for customers faced with two different programs that are similar in function-one already in Windows and the other from Windows Live.

When Windows 7 is available, Hall says, Microsoft will work with PC makers to place a desktop shortcut that will ... Read more

I really like this free app. (but find the latest beta version works better in 7. There is a paid pro version that adds little that the free version doesn't have. The free version basically has everything most users would need. One thing I really like about it is by default it gives you more info about what is going on as a file copy or move operation is occurring.

"Copy your files faster and easier with TeraCopy
"Hive Five Winner for Best Alternative File Copier" TeraCopy is a compact program designed to copy and move files at the maximum possible speed, providing the user a lot of features:
Copy files faster. TeraCopy uses dynamically adjusted buffers to reduce seek times. Asynchronous copy speeds up file transfer between two physical hard drives.
Pause and resume file transfers. Pause copy process at any time to free up system resources and continue with a single click.
Error recovery. In case of copy error, TeraCopy will try several times and in the worse case just skips the file, not terminating the entire transfer.
Interactive file list. TeraCopy shows failed file transfers and lets you fix the problem and recopy only problem files.
Shell integration. TeraCopy can completely replace Explorer copy and move functions, allowing you work with files as usual (using the existing explorer context menu commands).

I use iMovie a lot and the video camera I film with isn't compatible with iMovie.

Right now the converter I use is Wondershare converter, but I don't recommend it. I only downloaded it (free) because I was in a situation where I needed it very soon, but it has a watermark at the top that I always have to crop out. Also it got bad reviews for making you register and then not giving you a code or something. If you ever download it, NEVER register. The video quality is also not the best but it works.

Any other, better, free video converters that work on mac?

Hi. Since yesterday, My laptop suddenly started lagging a lot. I opened Task Manager and saw that the Disk Usage was at 100%! The only things causing it to rise are the essential Windows Programs. This causes so much lag though, that if I try to run more than 1 application at a time, nothing starts responding and it forces Me to Force Shutdown manually by holding the power button. I tried a new Browser (went from Firefox to Chrome) and still the same problem. I decided I want to upgrade to Windows 10, since I'm qualified to have it free, but whenever I try to install it, the "Checking for Updates" loading bar never finishes and if I try to close it or anything else, it'll freeze up all over again. Please help!

What should I do? I had to go into Safe Mode to be able to make an account here and type this up. I've already uninstalled some stuff, even though I barely have anything occupying a lot of space to begin with. I certainly didn't download anything malicious, as the day before it started lagging, it worked absolutely fine and haven't downloaded anything from then on.

Thank You!

Hi there
I use the Squeezebox system from Logitech for streaming music from my computer HDD's (network HDD's)and also Internet Radio

Now there's an app available FREE which enables you to do exactly the same from your computer -- so if you are on the road etc you can use the same Internet Radio / Music folders for playing on your PC without the server connecting to the remote devices

The interface looks EXACTLY like the Hardware controller when using the server at Home to remote devices -- so you can play all your favourites etc without having to go through hoops and loops to find everything again.
You need to install the Logitech media server (also free--I use their Internet Radio and a couple of squeezebox receivers - excellent system)

The software for running on a Stand alone PC is SOFTSQUEEZE and can be downloaded here
Squeezebox Software Beta Downloads - Version 7.7

Incidentally you can also sync this app with an Android phone so you can either have the music playing via your phone (Wifi needed) or you can use the Phone as a remote controller -- which is what I'm doing as I'm in a Hotel Bed listening to the radio via the computer -- and I can control the whole thing while in Bed (Lazy Bu---r) !!.

This is what it looks like after you've started the server

Panda USB and AutoRun VaccineBy Pedro Bustamante The Microsoft Windows Operating Systems use the AUTORUN.INF file from removable drives in order to know which actions to perform when a new external storage device, such as a USB drive or CD/DVD, is inserted into the PC. The AUTORUN.INF file is a configuration file that is normally located in the root directory of removable media and contains, among other things, a reference to the icon that will be shown associated to the removable drive or volume, a description of its content and also the possibility to define a program which should be executed automatically when the unit is mounted. The problem is that this feature, widely critizised by the security community, is used by malware in order to spread by infecting as soon as a new drive is inserted in a computer. The malware achieves this by copying a malicious executable in the drive and modifying the AUTORUN.INF file so that Windows opens the malicious file silently as soon as the drive is mounted. The most recent examples of this are the W32/Sality, W32/Virutas and also the W32/Conficker worm which, in addition to spreading via a vulnerability and network shares, also spreads via USB drives.Due to the large amount of malware-related problems associated with Microsoft AutoRun we have created a free utility for our user community called Panda USB Vaccine.Computer VaccinationThe free Panda USB Vaccine allows users to vaccinate their PCs in order to disable AutoRun completely so ... Hi all,

My first post on this site. I have a strange issue with my MS Word (2003). Its AutoCorrect is adding letters to words as I type. For example, if I type 'alway', it adds an 's', but because I'm still typing this results in 'alwayss'. In exactly the same way I get 'whichh' for 'which', and various other variants on the same theme. It's not only happening on documents in my own computer but (the same) documents on other computers.

I looked in the AutoCorrect options but nothing odd there. Interestingly, I looked in Outlook's Tools>Options>Spelling and these things are listed in there, so perhaps there's some crossover between the two programs? I turned off AutoCorrect in Outlook, but the problem in Word continues. I can't turn off AutoCorrect in Word as it's vital to my work (translator, professional linguist).

Just in case this affects anything, I recently developed a problem whereby my cursor 'disappears' from time to time, requiring me to click back in the window in which I am typing to allow me to continue typing (not just for Word, and not even only when I'm typing).

Antivirus/malware/spyware shows nothing. I've also had my computer cleaned recently (i.e. the full antivirus/antimalware etc. performed by a shop).

I am running XP, SP2 on a Dell computer new this summer. In both MS Word (2007) and in Thunderbird, I often get a pop up spell checker, in addition to the red underlining one would expect. Since it happens in both applications, I am assuming it is some program outside of them--an XP spell checker? A Dell spell checker?

It is insanely irritating. I will by typing, either into a Word document or composing an email in Thunderbird, and the pop up will appear. It will move the cursor to some other word in the text that it thinks is misspelled. When I cancel out of it, my cursor is still in the word it complained about, and I must move it back where I was typing. This is really irritating, I would love to have a clue how to get rid of it. As far as I know, it only appears when I'm typing, and never on the word I'm currently typing.

Thanks much,

Whenever I try to write anything in Microsoft Word 2007, the spellchecker language changes to French. This is very frustrating because it creates red squiggly lines all over my document and while I know I could disable spellchecker, I would like to use it. I've googled and read that Outlook can sometimes affect this and the only thing I use Outlook for is my school email and it uses Microsoft Outlook Web Access. I've checked the spellchecker language on there and it is in English. Whenever I change the language to English, it immediately changes to French when I start typing and will randomly change to English for a minute then back to French.

Does anyone know what could be causing this and how I could possibly fix it?

One other way to prevent the spell checker from running:First, Select all your text Select Review TabIn the Proofing sectionSelect Set Language In the pop up dialog box check the box for Do not check spelling or grammar Spelling errors will not be marked, even if you have ?Check spelling as you type? enabled. I have a document in Word 2000, most of which is ignored when spellchecking!

The document was created by merging a templete letter with a word table containing source data.

I cannot think of anything that has caused this to happen - but when I run the spellchecker on the merged document I get the message that the spelling check was ignored on text that was marked for the spellchecker to ignore.

My immediate question is how do I unmark this text (I have no clue as to what text is marked or unmarked - I haven't marked any text for anything).

My best guess is that the merged document wont check text that came from a source, since that could lead to 2 copies - with different spelling.

If that is the case is there any way around this? The document contains about 60 school reports. There are a few unusual names that we don't want added to the dictionary (because of the similarity). it is easier when checking to view the report, completed than the table source.

Any help?

Every so often, I have a recurring problem with Word 2007 - the spellchecker will randomly stop working. No red squiggles under any misspelled words, though the grammar check continues to work just fine. Restarting sometimes fixes the problem and sometimes it doesn't. It seems entirely random as to when it happens and I can't figure out the source of the problem at all. Any help or suggestions? On my screenshot you can see "Path" on the left and then the right dialog opens when I click "edit". Instead of a single dialog opening like the video shows.

The video: Installing Spell-Checker Plugin for Notepad++ - YouTube

The screenshot (mine): Imgur: The most awesome images on the Internet

Any ideas? Im stuck on this step.

A:Notepad++ spellchecker (environmental variables path issue)

I think all you're seeing in Win 10 is a more sophisticated environmental variable editor that lists each separate item in PATH to deskill edits, rather than listing them contiguously in a single line with ; separators.

To add, click New

The video is for Win 8

I thought it would be a good idea in keeping with the overall goal of this site to start a thread to give people a list of legal and secure sites for downloading free or dirt-cheap movies, music and software/games.
I believe this would helpful in terms of not just telling people not to visit/support pirating websites,
but to also give them other alternatives so that there wouldn't be a temptation to go there anyway
(And also for people like me that Don't want to steal, but also don't want to pay more than I have to)
Master list of sites for free/dirt cheap movies, music and free/free to try software:
Open Music Archive
Contains music with expired copyright according to UK copyright law, which states that the copyright expires 70 years after the author's death.
As such, some of the music may be considered "pirated" in countries with longer copyright periods.
For example, The longest copyright period I know of is Mexico (100 years after the author's death).
This guy composes his own music and gives it away for free!
Movies and/or TV
Movies and tv free with ads, or (for cost of membership) watchable without ads.
Free for Dishnetwork users?
Not completely free, but VERY low price!

A:Good source sites for secure & legal free movies and free/free to try software?

That is a good question.
When I think about it Hulu does have movies.
I use Netflix.
I can use as I have Dishnetwork and can use that to be able to watch. Yup, just tested works good.
Many of the Movies channels can be watched that way.

System: Intel Core 2 with 500GB HD and 7&7; that is Windows 7 with Office 07.

For those upgrading and totally unwilling to manually reload files like favorites.
These can be exported from your old computer using the import/export option under the files tab. For users running 98 or similar, Exporting your favorites file will require you to create a file known as Bookmark.htm. Import/Export has a wizard that will set it up for you and park the file in My Documents for you to subsequently burn to disk. A tip, tho, when you go to burn that file to disc it may not appear in your list of documents. To remedy the problem go into My Computer/My Documents and locate the .htm file Once you find it create a empty folder titled "Bookmarks" or similar and then drag/drop the .htm file into it. When you return back to the burn program for your CDs and use the locator to find what you want--that file will appear and you can then go about the task of burning it to disk. In IE 8 the help guide will explain what you need to do to import it. Be aware that in older editions of IE you can likely export the Bookmark file without being online. IE8 needs to be connected before it will allow you to import the Bookmark folder. There is probably a way around this but playing by 8's rules seemed to produce the required results so....
You can do the same thing for your e-mail addresses by creating a folder for them and copying them into it. Do the folder by itself so all you have is t... Read more

I think I have solved this - but I still would love to know... was my personal info ever at risk? Is this just basically a pop up hoax to get you to buy software or was it someone actually trying to tap into my personal info. I do all my banking online. Or is there a way to know this? And should I reinstall Norton? I have seen posts where people have to reinstall. I have Norton 360 (inc firewall), and Spyware Dr through Google pack, I use firefox and also have a desktop link to yahoo to access my husbands remote access to his office network. Am I safe? I want to post this because it may help someone else and I would love an expert opinon. I posted a hijack log a while back and I never got a response, I know how busy you guys are. And I appreciate what your doing. In fact, I already had a computer tech come to my house 2 weeks ago and spent $140. The about 2 days later I had something new, I figured I could figure it out on my own (after watching him) and with the help of BC. So, after running Adaware I found a trojan, and deleted it and then found 2 rootkit with Spybot that kept returning (until I killed them with AVG rootkit killer). Then I was finding NOTHING through Combofix, Spybot, etc.. I must have ran 10 different spy, mal and ad and virus programs. And nothing was coming up, BUT, I still had the pop ups. So finally I was just looking at files in C:/WIN/System32/ and looked under details and date, and found something that was saved around the date the problems st... Read more

Hi all, this is my first post on the forum, but i've been reading with interest for some time befoere jumping in!

I'm ready to do a clean install, so i'd like to ask,

So, how many people on here are running Windows 7 Beta as their main OS now?

Do you have Vista installed as a backup, or are you so confident in the new OS, that apart from a few teething problems which are communicated through feedback you feel that it's stable enough to run as a main OS?

A:Hi, how many of you have finally done it?

Hi saverio and welcome to the Forums,

I am dual booting with Vista ussing seperate HDD's and using Windows 7 as my main operating system and to tell you the truth, the more you use Windows 7 the less you will whant to use Vista and the older it feels and if you are coming from XP I think you would just be amazed at all the great features and inovations, just make sure you have all your updated drivers ready and you should be good to go.

If you do run into any problems you know where to go, good luck

Malwarebytes Antimalware
Spyware Doctor

Yea, it is pretty shocking considering rogue has taken about every possible antivirus name related to windows imaginable.Either way this is just another fake antivirus to look out for, thanks for the heads up and removal details.

Right now it's showing clean (after having found a number of things) but it still won't run ComboFix (which I know I shouldn't run without guidance, my apologies) which tells me that something is still on here.

I ran RootRepeal (attached log) and GMER (attached log), but I don't know enough to know what I am looking at. Help.

After years of safe computing, I slipped up and ran something I shouldn't, so now I need your help. I've read the instructions, and hopefully I have this right.

Last Tuesday I noticed some odd delays, and then fairly obviously fake warnings about disk damage appeared, and a program calling itself "HDD something-or-other" appeared saying it was doing a scan and I needed to buy the full version, etc. I tried to remove it and have fumbled around for a couple of days. (Sorry; I know that may complicate things; I'd have come here first if I'd known about it at the time.) I tried to install Prevx, but the installer just hung. AVG installed, and so did ZoneAlarm, but, using DuMeter I still see connections to various random hosts popping up from "srvhost" and WININET.DLL, and now Firefox. I was using IE8, but it stopped working; won't launch even with -extoff. Everynow and then I get a message about a process crashing, and I get pop-ups from FireFox.

I'm not sure what else to tell you without wasting your time, so let me know what else you need. I'm appending the dds.txt and have the Attach.txt and ark.txt ready.

I'll subscribe to the thread.

After over 2years of chasing an issue that no one seems to see. I think they are finally getting somewhere. What do you do now if this is your problem. Read this:

Dubbed BadUSB, the hack reprograms embedded firmware to give USB devices new, covert capabilities...BadUSB-corrupted devices are much harder to disinfect. Reformatting an infected USB stick, for example, will do nothing to remove the malicious programming. Because the tampering resides in the firmware, the malware can be eliminated only by replacing the booby-trapped device software with the original firmware. Given the possibility that traditional computer malware could be programmed to use BadUSB techniques to infect any attached devices, the attack could change the entire regimen currently used to respond to computer compromises.

Those files pertain to Wild Tangent. Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove programs and try to remove Wild Tangent from there. I don't think it will let you but try anyway.

If not, here's a tip I learned from Mobo.

Do a windows search for the file extension .cpl

Firefox for iOS is now available in the App Store worldwide supporting both iPhone and iPad.
Due to restrictions imposed by Apple, Firefox for iOS will not feature Gecko, the core engine that normally powers Firefox, instead Apple's Safari and its WebKit engine will power the browser. This is, however, commonplace for other browsers on the iOS platform, such as Google's Chrome.
Mozilla is quite late to the iOS party and it will be interesting to see how users respond.

Hello Everyone! I've finally made up my mind to upgrade to SP2 on my home Windows XP. I'd like any feedback you have on what problems I might encounter. I know there were a lot of problems when SP2 first came out. For instance, I read about people no longer being able to download large files such as music albums. And there were other problems too; I just can't remember what they were. I admit it, I'm really paranoid about this upgrade. I'm not even sure I need it because I already have a good firewall and an anti-virus program, but the upgrade is pretty much mandatory. I'd appreciate any information you have. Thanks.

I've spent most of the night and morning trying to clean my PC after discovering some real nasties such as

MS Juan

Using Spyware Doctor, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Combofix to clean up I have now ran an HJT and the log is posted below.

Could you please check to see if I am now safe or there are still traces left? Since I have done this I tried to insert a new host file to block access to many sites which had been classed as a risk, the method required me to create a shortcut but I noticed I now can't create shortcuts by selecting right-click then new and also all my icons at when viewed at the 'Large Icons' size (vista ultimate) dont show unless I cycle through the various icon sizes and eventually choosing 'Large Icons' size again, they blink and then eventually some show correctly... is this related to anything or an indication of continued problems?

I'm a pretty competent, technical and capable computer user. There are few things computer and software-related that I cannot do, repair or otherwise figure out on my own, and by using the internet. However, I've finally met a virus that I can't beat and I could really use some assistance.

I'm not certain what virus my computer has. However, the main symptom is Google redirects (click on a link returned from a search, and viola, I am not at the link I requested but some yellow pages site or other random site). This happens with both Firefox and IE, though Firefox usually gets infected first as it is my default browser. I've tried everything from Webroot Spysweeper to Malwarebytes to TDSSKiller to Kaspersky Anti Virus, etc. I even removed the drive from my laptop and connected it as an external drive (via USB) to a second computer I have and ran the tools againt the drive that way. No matter what has ever been detected and/or removed (found a TDSS rootkit and a few other virii in the past few weeks), the root problem remains and it isn't long before the computer has the same problems again. Therefore, I suspected that the virus is hiding as a legit windows file and I ran combofix as a last resort prior to wiping the drive. I've posted the combofix logfile below. Can you assist me in deciphering it? It appears that userinit.exe is infected, but what else do you see in the logfile as far as red flags, and what is the next step? I'm ru... Read more

As a one time lover of Avast, it disappointed me when this once excellent software began to slide in detection and have problems. (Blue screens, incomplete uninstalls, bloat, and the list goes on) The latest version looks promising. Just wondered what others thought about the new version. I'm not putting Avast down in any way. But reading posts here and in the Avast forum over the past year or so, indicates what I've said is true. Thanks.

I have been lurking here on the site for a couple of weeks now, as I deal with a couple of problems on our home system, which consists of two home computers and two college laptops. The daughters both are not real computer savvy, and have been infected numerous times, in spite of the college 'antivirus' software. I think I cleaned up both of them, and put my daughters on my eaccelleration subscription account (Norton has only ever worked adequately, and they were really virused this last month while using two different protection suites. But the concern is not for the laptops. My main computer, a tower, is loaded with work related software, as I have been downsized recently, and partnered with another individual for engineering services. So the computer is a lifeline, and I cannot have it infected. I am not certain -exactly- how it became so infected, but I suspect it was cause I was on a few lewd sites that I should not have been in a moment of boredom. No more. The computer is too important to risk compromising the software and my ability to keep earning the mortgage.Anyway, the computer was caught in a loop at startup. I was infected with WINUPD.exe... and several others. I found PEV.exe... and Trojan.Backdoor something about 30 times. So. I have followed instructions that I have seen here to help others. I had not choice but to do an XP Pro repair (which installs a clean copy of XP over the old one, I guess) and I ran Brute force Uninstaller. SDFix. and then Combofi... Read more

At least I have ordered it

I checked my PayPal account a few days later and it gave all the payment info (to Target) but said "unclaimed" and "no shipping address".

When I filled out the online order form, it said "shipping address the same as debit/credit card" and I checked YES and it put it in the shipping info. I then clicked to pay using PayPal, which seemed the fastest and easiest way.

So, maybe Target has the shipping info but PayPal doesn't.

I tried calling Target but their customer service line wasn't open on Saturday... (which seems odd, seems like most people would be wanting to call on a Saturday?)

Anyway, by the end of the week I should have a cd burner.

I know, I will learn how it works and soon be using it like everything else I've gotten for my computer.

But, I have a few questions ahead of time.

Someone recently told me I can't save a program from my computer on a cd and then run it (again) FROM the cd.

Is there anyway of doing this?

Can I download a program right to the cd and then run it at another time? Again, someone told me I had to put the program IN my computer first and then save it on a cd!

For example, I have a program on my computer (a free download) "Drawing for Children". My 3 year old grandaughter loves to use.

I want to put this on a computer that is not online for her to play with.

I can't download it on the computer that's not online. The choices are: Save it... Read more

I have been very happy with the RAD video tools, which let me convert video by number of colors, number of frames, frames per second, de-noise, de-interlace, blend, adjust brightness, gamma, and smoothness; as well as convert audio in different templates, hz ranges, and quality overall. Well, its one downfall is that it is EXTREMELY slow at converting AVI files, and those are the only movie files it can convert. Are there any other freeware programs that let me do that and edit WMV files? I've been working with BLAZE and with RAD for awhile, and I want to step up a little on speed.

Please do this:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.
To attach a file to a new post, simplyClick the[Manage Attachments] button under Additional Options > Attach Files on the post composition page, and
copy and paste the following into the "Upload File from your Computer" box:C:\Deckard\System Scanner\extra.txt

Click Upload.

What DSS will do: create a new System Restore point in Windows XP and Vista.
clean your Temporary Files, Downloaded Program Files, and Internet Cache Files, and also empty the Recycle Bin on all drives.

Please take a sec to critique my system. I want this to be a wise investment that will keep me from not upgrading for the next 3 years...(if that's possible)

-INTEL Pentium 4 at 2.80GHz (2800 MHz). Hyper-Threading technology-800Mhz system bus
-512MB DDR at 400MHz
-80GB Ultra ATA-100 hard drive (7200 RPM)
-8Mb cache 5xPci/1xCnr/1x8X Agp
-integrated AC 97audio+1.44F.D.D.
-52x24x52 CD-RW (cd burner)
-keyboards/Mouse/Speakers/17" case 420W power supply
-Integrated 10/100 Ethernet Chaintech
-Geforce4 MX440 64MB DDR w/TV out AGP8X

This is the kinda system I'm looking into. Tell me what I should upgrade so I can get it right the first time. Thank you so much.

Dear Friends,

My current computer I ordered from Dell in November 2000, and being a full time student that enjoys gaming, I have decided to upgrade to a new system. I currently play games like BF2 and WoW. I want to be ready for future games like Warhammer Online and I would love to be able to play current high-end games like CoD4 and Crisis. I am either going to build this system from scratch myself (which I have never done) or I am going to order one from so I have a few questions for ya?ll:

First off, I would like to know what the general gaming public considers to be the best Windows OS for gaming?Vista or XP? What will XP SP3 and Vista SP1 have to offer for gamers?

Second, I am planning on an Intel/SLI based system, but what processor should I go with?Quad-Core or Dual-Core? I have heard that XP won?t support Quad processors and have also heard that Dual-Core systems are better for gaming.

Third, I would like to know what would be better for high-end games like CoD4 and Crisis?two 8800 GT in SLI or a faster single card like the GTS, GTX, etc.

And finally, has anyone had experience with Cyberpower Inc? I have heard several good things about the systems they build but also have heard that their shipping and return policies are horrible as well as their customer service. This is the system I am looking at buying and yes?I can finally afford it after 8 years of waiting! Here it is: Read more

A:Finally building a new PC

I'd say going with a Quad-Core, since its more future proof. Don't get 1 8800GTX rather go with 2x 8800GT SLI. Memory go with either Corsair or OCZ, make sure it is of high speed 800MHz and up. PSU, I'd go with 1000W Enermax or 750 OCZ. Windows XP handles quad core no problem. Dual Core is only better for gaming at the moment, since some new games don't have quad core support. Crysis however does, so you will see benefit from having a Quad Core over a Dual Core. However other games might not utilize all four cores, but only two of them. You will not see any performance decrease from going with quad core over dual core whatsoever. Good luck.

I was infected with the antivira va and have finally gotten that cleaned up thanks to the advice given in other postings. Now I am left with a very slow computer. This has been building for a while now. Its gotten to the point that its hard to function. My msconfig won't let me make changes. It keeps giving me an error of admin rights (even though I have admin rights). I downloaded Mike Lin's software, but there is much more running in the background than what shows up on the log on his program.

Is there a way I can send a log of everything that is running and get some advice on how to turn it off or delete if not needed? I just doubled the memory about a month ago and that didn't have any impact.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.
