Earthlink Taskpanel changes home page url to lower case

Q: Earthlink Taskpanel changes home page url to lower case

Every time I launch Earthlink Taskpanel it changes in my home page addr to

Prior to launch I check it via 'ctrl panel', 'internet options' and it is as I want.

NOTE: in anticipation of soon installing Trend Micro Internet 2008, I uninstalled WebRoot Spysweeper days ago, but this particular problem has existed for months. I currently have only KAV7 installed and running.

As I type Trend micro 'HouseCall' is running.

Recently, I changed DSL providers from Earthlink to another company. I did this for two reasons: the Earthlink throughput was awful, and their tech support was virtually useless. After numerous attempts to get the speed problems resolved I finally gave up. Upon ordering the new provider's service, I uninstalled Earthlink from my PC. Problem is, no matter what I do, my IE home page is the Earthlink start page. I have used the IE options to change it, it goes right back to Earthlink. I have changed it in the registry, it goes right back to Earthlink. I have checked for spyware/adware, run registry cleaner, you name it. Is my PC going to be forever haunted by Earthlink? I have XP home edition, latest version. Can someone rid me of this troublesome home page?

Installed high speed Internet a week ago.  Before that, had Earthlink dialup account (for many years).  Have not yet closed out Earthlink account (I find it useful, for the time being) and put my Earthlink home page on the Google Chrome list of pages to open, on my new Win 8 laptop.  Now I suddenly find aggressive blinking ads for "clean your computer" and such like on the Earthlink home page, that I never saw using dialup on the old Windows XP machine.  Loading SpywareBlaster did not make those things disappear.  Thought of installing the MVPS hosts file - for that to work you have to tinker with the Windows Defender settings, I believe - though I am using Avast! Internet Security which should theoretically disable Defender?
I did download, install and use a Driver Updater program (paid), before I realized hey, there's way too much advertising on this site.  Wonder what scans to run, to make sure that didn't bring any nasties with it?  It did seem to do a decent job of updating the drivers, and the ones I was familiar with seemed to be legit.
Thanks for enlightenment!

A:Scumware on Earthlink home page???

I've had EarthLink high speed Internet (though Time Warner does the work) for over 2 years now. Price had never increased until recently, Time Warner began charging for the modem. However I don't have to be concerned over escalating pricing from year to year & speeds are decent (15 down/1 up), so I'll keep it.
10 email accounts are also included.
However, I've never used their home page, it's unattractive, behind the times looking & as you state, many ads. Fortunately I've only had to call them once, they really try hard to sell Norton security.
You can easily change your home page in Google Chrome to one that you want, or even add another & let the EarthLink one be the one that you don't see. Open Google Chrome & click the tab in the upper right corner to "Customize and Control Google Chrome", right beneath the red X to close the browser. You will see the Settings.
Go to the second option down "On Startup". You'll have 3 options:
Open the New Tab page
Continue where you left off
Open a specific page or set of pages. Set pages
You want to choose the last option & click "Set Pages". Now it's up to you to find a suitable replacement page. It can be the Google Default, MSN, Yahoo, whatever you wish. Check it out.

I start up my computer and after the windows logo loads a message pop ups that says: lsass.exe system error- an invalid parameter was passed to a service or function. I am not sure how to fix this since I can't log into windows in either normal or safe modes. any help to solve this would be greatly appreciated.

A:lsass.exe (lower case L)

If it's "lsass.exe" with a lower case "L", then it is a virus in the Sasser family, most likely. You'll need to scan it with a good antivirus either by using a boot CD with an antivirus on it or take your drive out and hook it up as a secondary drive in another computer. That should get you back up and running. You may have to do a repair installation of Windows after you've scanned it.

The lower case L on my computer has gone berserk. It will not function correctly in Windows. When struck nothing appears. However, if the caps lock key is activated and the shift key is held down, the lower case L works. The upper case L and all other keys work fine.

This is only true in Windows. Iím running Windows Pro 2000 and in the Windows login screen, lower case Ls can be typed in both the user name and the password fields. As soon as Windows comes up, it stops working.

I have tried three different keyboards, reloaded Windows 2000 and the keyboard software but the key still fails.

I would appreciate any help.

My computer:
AMD Athon Processor
AT/AT Compatible
256 MB RAM
The keyboard is a Microsoft Internet Pro PS2 (Brand New)

A:Lower case L does not type

You say that you have tried different keyboards, and that outside of windows the lower case L works, so the only thing that I could think of (and it's a long shot), is that when Windows has loaded (and any startup programs as well), a process or program has changed the mapping of the lower case L to perform some other function.
Have you tried booting into safe mode? This should stop any non-Windows programs from loading. Give this a try and see what happens. If the L works normally, then you need to see what programs are being loaded (in normal mode), and remove them one at a time (restarting and testing each time).

I just upgraded my 8 year old iiyama monitor for a new Dell monitor with a bigger screen with higher resolution - oh and I have got new spectacles. I had replaced the capacitors twice in the iiyama (having to keep jabbing the "On" button to get the current surge going) as I don't care for these new wide screen type monitors but I had to get updated eventually.

Anway, with my fantastic new monitor, I now notice that on both the Desktop (of Vista) and in Winodws Explorer all the letters "i" and "l" have an almost imperceptible red fringe or hue. How weird is that?

This happens whether I use the VGA or the DVI cable connection.

Amazingly, this issue was raised by wguru and Saga Lout on this forum 18 months ago but it is not clear to me whether anyone ever came up with a solution. The possibility of a virus or registry corruption error was mentioned but I did not understand whether this was ever proven.

I run about 3 virus programs most days and I woudl be devastated if I unknowingly had a virus. It is difficult but not impossible to believe. Having said that, I have occasionally tweaked the Rgeistry e.g. to get rid of "klingons".

I suspect I have had this issue a while but only with the new monitor has it become noticeable.

Any suggestions on what to try next would be appreciated.

As a newbie, first poster, it seems that I am prohibited from sending a PM to wguru or Saga Lout.

However I did get the message we have made 12 replacements but not even one "CITY" was changed to "city." When I tried to replace "CITY" with another word in lowercase, it replaced the different word but in Uppercase. Please help this novice in word. Thank you.

A:How to change words in Uppercase to lower case

Hello Mike, thanks for your reply. No I am not using Excel but Ms Word 2016. I think I found the solution to my problem. Find and Replace is case sensitive. Therefore to change Uppercase words to lowercase one has to go to "more" option and check the box "Match Case." I did that and I was able to change all "CITY" to "city" using Find and Replace.I hope this may be helpful to someone. If anyone has other solutions to this problem please do post it.Your novice in MS Word

Due to age limited facilities I regularly post CAPS.. marvel at features now available for umpteen retro changes and languages but not it seems merely correction of this? so I understand.. If so? shows how limited technology actually is! AND who would not want updates by email?

A:rELACING Accident post CAPITALS With lower case

On the "Age" thing, don't even go there we have members in their 90's who get shot down in flames for calling the "Age" Card. I'm just 71 and, more than likely, there's a 17 year old reading this.
Unfortunately, in this Forum, once you've hit the "Post" button. That's what you've get, unless you grovel to FE and he makes the change with his Silver Mouse. But don't press your luck, he might weaken the once, but is unlikely to weaken a second time!
The technology is available but using it makes for sloppy composition and allows people to Post one thing and then change it, after others have replied, which might make them look stupid, which few of us admit too. Amateur - Yes, Enthusiasts - Yes, but Stupid - No. Unless you think that trying to help some damn-fool whose just done something unfortunate, is stupid.

Everyday I upload some files to my website and to simplify my website operations, I use the same filename and just upload a file with new information every day. The case of file extensions is of no consequence to Windows 7, but it matters to my website. I want to standardize on one case and it doesn't matter which as long it's the same all the time. I have one app, the snipping tool, which seems to generally make files using uppercase, but I have some existing files that are lower case. I have tried to get rid of the lower case extensions by deleting the file and then recreating it with the same name. When I do, Windows changes the case from upper to lower. If I simply create a brand new file with no previous instances of that file in existence (as far as I know), then the default case is upper. How does one go about converting all existing files of a particular type to a standard file extension case, be it upper or lower.

A:Change file extension upper/lower case

Not sure you can as Windows is case insensative, but have you tried doing it from a Command prompt, enclosing the filename.ext in double quotes as "filename.ext"?

If that doesn't work, maybe a two step process would.

ren "FileName.EXT" FileName.EX"
ren "FileName.EX" FileName.ext"

I have a weird problem on an XP Home system that was brought in for repair.
When you turn it on, it comes up with a message. The upper and lower case of the message is switched as shown. The periods are shown as music notes! (I have shown them as as %)
If I attempt to go thru safe mode, the options for safe mode, safe with networking, etc, com up - with the same upper/lower case lettering. Choose safe mode option and you get the same message as sbove.

I booted with the XP CD to attempt repair, came up with a different error message.

I am stumped! I would assume a virus, trojan, etc.
I know I can pull the hard drive and format it in another system, then go from there, but trying to avoid that if possible!

Any thoughts on what has caused this issue?

A:Upper And Lower Case Switch - Music Notes As Periods!

Since you're familiar with yanking the hard drive - how's about yanking it, installing it in another system, and doing an antivirus scan of it from the "clean" system?

Depending on the virus, you may need to do a repair install - do you have the original XP installation CD?

When I try to change the case from upper to lower or vice versa of filenames n windows explorer, the changes are not accepted. Also, adding or deleting of spaces in existing filename words is also not being accepted. I have admin privileges.

Thank you for help.

A:Can we change the upper/lower case of filenames in Windows Explorer?

Hi Seymoria, welcome to the Seven Forums.

Filenames in Windows Explorer are not case sensitive. This means that for Windows, the filenames ThisIsMyDocument.doc, THISISMYDOCUMENT.DOC and tHiSiSmYdOcUmEnT.DoC are all the same, the file would be found and can be referred to using any of these or any other combination of upper and lower case letters, as long as the name itself stays the same.

Therefore, if you have a file document_1.doc but you'd like to change the first letter to upper case D, selecting rename and changing the first d to D does nothing. Windows simply does not understand it, for it there was no change as the first letter did not change.

You need to work around this by renaming the file first to something else, then rename it again to Document_1.doc, this time using the upper case D. I use a neat trick here, changing the first letter from lower to upper case: I select rename, delete just the first letter of the filename, the one with lower case, then rename again this time entering the upper case first letter.

For no reason, a week ago, Earthlink enabled me to get my email and my current programs like Spyware could all install updates. but when I try to use Earthlink Total Access - the Web Part and try to access someplace,, I get this message:
"The page cannot be displayed. The page you are currently looking for is unavailable". It tells me to check my LAN settings, (I have Satellite), and they are correct and my advanced settings are correct.
My basic machines are Pentium 4, 2 gigs ram, new graphics card and monitors. I use XP Pro. My Satellite is Direcway 6000. It works fine. My only clue is that when I tried to use XP's "restore" command to pick an earlier date when everything did work, the Restore program told my Work Group is called "Work Shop" when the previous name was "Work Group". I told it to restore, it said it couldn't complete the restore and to try another date. I tried several other dates and none could complete the restore point. I tried Earthlink Tech support 5 times and got India, they would not transfer me to the US to Tier 2 or 3 support and all 5 times they hung up on me. I don't know where to find the Workgroup names so I can change it from Work Shop to Work Group. Would it be in the Registry and if so how do I deal with it? Has anybody got any ideas? I need access to Web sites and all I get that message I wrote down above. Thanks for any help.

Just notice Earthlink's Wireless Home Networking offer. I am an Earthlink subscriber.

Limited-time equipment rebate! Receive a full rebate on your Linksys Wireless Router and Linksys Wireless Card or USB Adapter ($139.90 value)!

$139.90 ??? I think I paid $40.00 for my Linksys Wireless router, and about 29.00 for one Laptop Wireless card. So I spent $69.00. I might get that back in a rebate, but then they are charging $9.95 a month for something! What I don't know. I'm doing the same thing they want $9.95 a month for and I am paying nothing. Use less programs simultaneously. Turn off everything loading at startup that isn't critical, disable unneeded system services, look over the programs you use and consider less bloated alternatives, turn off all eye candy - your 1024x768 wallpaper means 2MB of RAM lost.

I just picked up a Windows 7 book at the bookstore (can't remember the title), but it indicated that the maximum RAM that can be recognized varies by edition. I think this is where it stood:

Home Basic: 8 Gig
Premium: 16 Gig
Professional, Ultimate and Enterprise: 192 Gig

I was surprised by this, as I don't remember seeing in the version matrix that Microsoft posted. It won't be long before 16 Gig is not such a huge number. And I am glad I went for Pro, but my motivation was solely XP Mode. Another goody I had not expected to find is EFS.

A:Max RAM is lower with Home and Premium?

Vista was the same - the x64 version dictated how much RAM you could use. However, Windows 7 increased the max quite a bit! Don't forget that starter is limited to 2GB.

A game i was playing's website got infected with some type of malware, and ever since that happened and i was on it, I've been getting popup ads in the lower left and the lower right corners of my screen, no sound or anything. Occasionally i get redirects as well. I ran a malwarebytes quick and full scan and got nothing, a Microsoft security essentials scan and got nothing, and a adwcleaner scan and got nothing. I saw some other people had this problem, even on this website but they used combofix, which i'm not suppose to use unless told to. So yeah, hope you guys can help :3. 'Quick edit, the ads were from ad.yieldmanager, and ad.xtendmedia, if it matters.

I have noted that on pcs that have a lota of ram say 4gb + the page file is also greater then the ram. I have seen almost 16gb of page file on few laptops.

So my question is is this needed? Can't we disable the paging? In da de of average user? Who will just be using virtual boxwood one or two vms running in it and each set to 2gb and the system having 8gb ram.

In xp days when I had 128mb of ram I would set it to 200mb and all programs would run. Later after upgrading ram of my old p3 to 512mb I would set it to 100mb.

Afterall the purpose of page file is to give a virtual ram to the os yo mitigate the issue of no memory. In old days it was understandable to use page file and may be set it to 1.5 times the amount of physical memory installed. But nowadays with a lot of physical memory already available do we even need this page file thingy and above all in this huge proportion to ram?

Do you mean you have another topic covering the same problem?

If so, you should post that you are receiving help here and mark the topic solved otherwise you might end up with conflicting advice.

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will produce a log called (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run from.
Please copy and paste log back here.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please also paste that into your reply.

Hi noroots

Welcome to TSG!

Click here to download CWShredder. UnZip the file, close all browser windows and click on the cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

When it is finished Restart your computer.

IMPORTANT!: To help prevent this from happening again, I strongly recommend you install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits.

The simplest way to make sure you have all the security patches is to go to Windows update and install all "Critical Updates and Service Packs"

Go here and download Adaware 6 Build 181

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest referencefiles.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window :Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

Click Use custom scanning options then click Customize and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan within archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.

Now click on the Tweak button in that same window. Under Scanning engine select Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select Let windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click proceed to save your settings.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

This problem is either Networking/connection or XP issue, but I want to find out what's the problem is.

The issue is that whenever start-up PC/XP, 'not connected,' page appears instead Home-Page. After a couple of second, it shows 'now connected' in the rectangular-box at the right bottom of corner of task-bar and I need to click to open 'Home-Page' manually although I set 'I.E.' on start-up to open Home-Page automatically.

It appears to me that my ISP is slow connection, but of course I can not be sure.

How to open up Home-Page, instead seeing 'not connected' page?

Thanks for your help in advance.

A:'Not connected' Page instead "Home Page'

You Network Adapter loads last on your computer and it takes up to a minute to connect to the internet. So, everything else is going to load first before you can access a web page. So, if you have IE set to open with Windows, it is going to show a not connected message until you get an internet connection. Better to not have IE load at startup and just be patient. You can also, just leave your computer on and the internet connection always on.

Couple days I got new a case Corsair Graphite 230T Orange. I installed mother board P8Z77-V LX, new cooler Evo212. I THINK I installed the motherboard right in the case. I had to remove 1 pin that was blocking the placement of the board.

A:New case possible short circuiting home

There is 1 board mounting post that needs to be left out from time to time. I even believe I've seen phenolic, or some type of composition pins to be put in that position.

If you look carefully at you board, you may be able to spot the position, by the lack of ground tracks running to it.

Best I can do. BTW, I don't really trust any thing to do with "tinyURL" or similar links. No offense intended.

OK, I have a case picked out, I just need to fill it.

I have no clue how to set this up so it would really help me out if you will tell me what will fit, here is what I know it needs.

A way to hardwire atleast 4 computer lines to it
A way to add computers wirelessly
A way to give all 4 computers cable from my modem
(The first 2 are currently set up with a linksys router, can I still use this?)
1 Terabyte of storage
Fast, if its slower than the network i currently have, its not worth it

And thats really it.

Any suggestions on how to get this to work the most cost effective way? I really want to keep this under or around $750

Though this is related to Win 7 but I think many of you may guide me regarding this. I installed Win 7 Professional SP1 which has IE 11 bundled in it. Now whenever I open IE it will open my home page i.e google but within seconds, it will change to other page (image attached). I have not installed any thing so far except wifi lan driver. Can some one guide that what is this page and whether it is genuine and how can I remove this.

Hi where did you try and set your home page for google
Only looks like an Advert keeps coming up.
I get that If I go into a site

Also sorry but I don't use either IE11 or Google
I use Edge Browser and Bing

Also make sure when you set your home page that you click Apply then OK

Hello: I just received some windows updates as well as upgrading to Internet Explorer 7.
Note: I had to remove IE 7 the other day as I was having issues opening certain webpages.

Anyway, IE 7 seems to be navigating fine, other than the fact that when I click on my desktop icon to launch Internet Explorer it opens to a webpage that allows you to Customize Your Settings.

Although, I have as my home page within Internet Options (General tab), Google does not open, but rather opens then quickly converts to which then opens the Customize Your Settings webpage.

I noticed that the default setting in Internet Options is displayed as , so I tried to change that to, but it reverts back to .

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Ted569

A:Home page automatically opens to "Customize Your Settings" page

That is new with IE7.0. You should only have to run through the customization once though. Then click "Go To My Homepage." That should be all. Have you done that yet?

Is there a way to make Internet Explorer's "New Window" button open my home page instead of the page that I was just on?

I like to open a new window and search something real quick on google (with it big, not using the searchbar in the top right as its tiny up there).

When you open Internet Explorer in a whole other instance, it uses memory that it would otherwise not use had you just opened a "new window".

So, is there any sort of registry tweak, etc. that could make "New Window" open my homepage instead of the page I was JUST on? That's not a New Window... That's the same Window...

Any help would be appreciated, thx.

Strangest thing...we thought that our internet was down and we tried all of the usual steps...restarting computer, modem, router, etc. and nothing helped. Our other computer worked so I tried switching ports and same thing--this computer seemingly was down while the other was fine. On a whim I selected a random web page instead of the homepage and it opened up. Every single website we tried works just fine but not the home page. We changed the home page, no luck. So what happens is I click on the little Mozilla (or IE) icon on my desktop, the page opens but is blank and it shows connecting, connecting, connecting stays completely blank but if I put in another website, it pops right up. It even works if I manually type in whatever we have set as our homepage. We checked both the Control Panel and Internet>Tools>Options and everything appears kosher. Please help!

Is this meant to be a guessing game?

Guess 1: You are changing the home page for one browser and then using a different one.

Guess 2: You don't click on 'Apply' after the designation.

Guess 3: You have malware that doesn't like your selection.

I can and have dragged the icon in internet explorer and clicked yes in the pop up menu but on both browsers the jumbled instruction stays at the top of the page. Just wondering if anyone else has had this issue and can give me some tips on how to solve it. Also the rest of the home page fails to load. no pictures and only half the links. Every other web page is fine. I have tried clearing the browser cache and re building the AOL adapter but they dont improve it at all.

- Modem, DSL, ??? Since say that you have to redial, suppose it is modem.
- If indeed modem, how fast?
- Amount of RAM, system resources, ???
- Do you have firewall, if so which one?
- How much is on the homepage, many photos, large sizes?
- What is the address of the homepage? Maybe if we could try it too, could tell more about where you may need help...
- Why kind of system do you have, version of Windows, etc.

Never does. I get a start page from BT and even if I click on the "house" button the page just updates to the same thing. I can get Home eventually if I click on "Email" on the page but it takes an infuriating amount of time.

Sometimes BT makes me log in again. Ok, happy to do that once in a while but often when I try it tells me I am locked out because I have had too many tries but I only tried once!
