Is there any software that will allow me to put video and mp3 onto a DVD, and will play on a dvd player? I want to be able to create a menu, so the user can choose to play a music track, or the video.

A:Software Required

Do you have a DVD Writer on your PC? If so, it would come with a dosc containing software (like Nero) to 'burn' MP3 and Videos to disc. You can also google for similar software or search through popular software download sites like SNAPFILES, etc.

Hi all! First time poster here, and over the past six or so months I've been trying to ensure that my wife and I have secure computers. We're behind a hardware firewall, a Dlink wireless router, so I'm talking specifically about security software that I have purchased and installed on both of our computer(s).

It may be overkill, but this is what I've got:

1) ZoneAlarm Pro Anti-virus + Firewall
2) Malwarebytes Anti-malware Home (Premium)
3) Malwarebytes Anti-exploit (Premium)
4) Adblock Plus
5) Secunia PSI

I'm also pretty meticulous about making sure that we're up to date on patches, software updates, etc.

I just wanted to run this by you all, and see what you thought. Thanks.

A:Required security software

Good choice.. I'd like to look at this from a different angle..

What precautions have you taken against
a. Ransomware
b. Theft
c. Disk failure

a. To stop it:
Download CryptoPrevent - MajorGeeks
To recover from it:
Use disk imaging e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + boot medium + external storage (remote location preferred).

b + c:
Use disk imaging e.g. Macrium Reflect (free) + boot medium + external storage (remote location preferred).

Hello All,

I work IT for a local middle school that runs about 20 student laptops per class. Lately we've noticed that there are students who've found ways of goofing off and going to youtube and watching videos or what have you (as one would naturally suspect). Anyways, I now find myself in need of some sort of monitoring software that would allow us to catch kids in the act of goofing off and not staying on task. Can anyone recommend any commercial software for this? Our computer total is at 95 and ideally we'd like to be able to monitor all screens so that we can find out who's not doing their work when they're supposed to. Of course minimum pricing is preferable since we're a public school and are therefore on a budget. Thanks for the help!

Hello! I have a brand new SATA HD and I want to put my new 64-bit Win7 on it. Question is: if I remove my old SATA drive and plug the new drive in, will I be able to partition the new drive using the 64-bit Windows7 disk, or must I get 3rd party partitioning software and run it from my flash drive first??Thanks,Sandy GerliDurham NC

As is the case with all Windows Versions, you will be given the opportunity to create partitions as part of the installation process.

Hello there,
I am trying to install a webcam on my Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit. I feel i should also mention that I had bought this laptop from a friend a year or so ago and i decided to reformat it to Windows Vista Home Premium Lite (due to the excessive programs i didn't use and it was running really slow) about a month ago. Back to the problem. I load the installation disc and it all installs up until the point of the driver. When it starts to install the driver it encounters an error. It tells me that (for example Microsoft HD-5000 webcam) "Microsoft HD-5000 is not in the required .INF" or something along those lines. This message has popped up for 3 different webcams that I've tried to install. I even Went the extra mile and bought the HD-6000 for notebooks and still doesn't work.
-I've tried going to the manufacturer's website and installing the latest software and still the same problem.
-I've also tried going to the device manager and trying to update the driver. and still the same message.
-I've even tried locating the Driver myself to install it and Same thing.

Someone Please help me install this webcam! I am trying to webcam my girlfriend that is 800 miles away! PLease Someone HELP!!!

A:Driver Software not in the required .INF

Just a quick thought, but are you doing the installation WITHOUT the webcam plugged in? That's how I believe it needs to be done. If the webcam is plugged in while installing, it may explain the problems you are encountering (I'm not certain about this at all as I don't have a webcam, but the procedures are clear on the order of events at least for the HD-6000 which I looked up and there might be a reason for that). See: Microsoft Webcam Basics. If you've been doing it with the webcam attached, detach it and try installing that way and see if it helps.

If not, then you might try Microsoft Support at: https://support.microsoft.com/oas/de...rect=1&sd=hdwr though I have no idea if it is available for free or if they charge (I think it depends and where and how and when and what - but I can't get past that screen to figure it out because I don't know the Product ID Number). If it costs, I probably would not pay and would find some other solution but if it's free, then they may well be able to help you.

I hope this helps. If not, post back and we'll do more research to see if we can find a cause and a solution - though to be honest you've already tried pretty much everything I would typically suggest (and trying 3 different webcams with the same error suggests the issue isn't the camera itself) so it may take some time to come up with anything else to attempt. Incidentally, what do you mean by a "Lite" version of Vista - I wasn't aware that such a thing ex... Read more

Dear all technicians and other IT guys...
I have passed my Microsoft & CompTIA A+ exams and I want to increase my knowledge base and become a better technician.

I would like to ask for some help, I need software's/programs that can help me repair computers, such as boot problems, viruses, scanners, hardware checking, reconfiguration software in case system viruses destroy it completely and other stuff like that...

I would be greatfull for any information, names, links, programs/software's recommended..

ohhh and it would be great if you guys can list any tools i can use for laptops (screw drivers, pliers, etc)

Many thanks guys,
Abz

A:Repair software required

Most hard drive manufacturers have a diagnostics ISO you can download and burn to disc to boot the PC and run the diagnostics.

Memtest86+ is about the best memory test you can get but is not 100%, it can miss minor faults. Running a PC on one stick at a time is a better test.

For the CPU & Memory combined there is Prime95.

For the GPU there is Furmark.

A quick search will find all that I have mentioned above.
Then you need to grasp memory dumps for BSOD analasys, some guides are available on line.

I still have a lot to learn about in depth Malware detection and removal. Looking through the Malware forum will give you some idea of what programs to use but then you may need to find a good book on the subject to learn how to read all the logs.

As far as tools go just a good selection of small hand tools including a set of small screwdrivers and a good quality multi meter.

You should have a selection of spare memory, hard drives (3.5 and 2.5 IDE and SATA) a hard drive USB adapter and a spare PSU. Having a few CPU's and a graphics card can also be usefull.

For boot problems you need the full set of Windows OS's to run repair installs and to fix the MBR. Learning how to repair the MBR using the Command Prompt can be usefull.

And that is just a very brief answer. You will never stop learning as there will always be new stuff to learn, faults you have never seen before, etc, etc.

I'm soon going to be assembling a new rig, with an AMD Phenom II x6 1090T CPU, verses the Athlon II x2 4400+ that I now have. Obviously, the chipset driver is different and will have to be upgraded also, but is there anything more that isn't automatically installed by the OS installation or Windows Updates?

A:Required Software/Drivers Upgrade?

Win7 installer is mostly driver-complete with newer arriving quickly via optional Windows Updates when you enable hardware auto-updating: Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware

Afterwards any drivers missing in Device Manager can be imported from the Support Downloads webpage for your model device.

I would not change out any drivers issued by the installer and updated by optional Updates unless performance problems point to that driver.

Hey folks,

So many devices these days come with a driver on a mini-CD. My laptops (Acer and Toshiba) take forever to access them, then think they're blank and ask to format them.

In Googling this I found a guy who said he fixed this problem by reinstalling Roxio. Said his computer came with it but he'd uninstalled it cause he never used it. That it must "turn on" a feature in W7 or something, cause after he reinstalled it, his computer could read mini's.

When I got both my laptops I wiped all partitions (including the hidden "recovery" one), re-partitioned the way I wanted, and reloaded all drivers and W7 (64 Ultimate). The DVD players in both laptops have a central spindle, so they are designed to read mini-CDs. They DO detect them, but again, think they are blank.

Anyone heard of Roxio or other software being required to read mini's? Thanks much.

PS I have a lot of media software installed but not Roxio. (Nero, ImageBurn, Handbrake, Ashampoo, etc.)

A:Is Media Software Required to Read Mini-CDs?

Windows should be able to read your mini-CDs . You might want to eject the CD and place it in the middle . It will take a few seconds to read the disc due to it size. I never had an issue with mini-CDs being read.

Hi All,

I need some decent computer backup software, recently I've been using Aoemi, but have had issues with it and decided to leave it.

I am absolutely paranoid with my data, my main concern is personal data, windows and software can always been reinstalled.

I was at first using Windows 10 File History, but I had these issues:
Only does it for current user (Not useful)I was running out of space on my 3TB HDD, I think windows was duplicating many files.When I removed files like C:\users\XX it would re-include them again

Is the Windows 7 backup and restore still 100% supported?, I don't mind using it at all, all my backups go onto a network However I did like how file history backed up changes files every X minutes. This would be quite nice.

I am looking for reliable software which works out of site, and if I accidentally shut-down my PC it will continue on reboot (Aoemi, never did this spent hours backing up data and it sometimes failed for long directories).

What software/solution do people recommended?
I don't mind paying for software up to ?100, but it will need to support 3PCs at least.

Kind regards

Hi,
One of our software providers has instructed us to make some changes to our Win 8 PC's registry to get the software to work properly. They have sent me details of what changes are required:
Open Windows Registry Editor (Regedit) Right click HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT - click PERMISSIONS - click ADVANCED Click/Check: REPLACE ALL CHILD OBJECT PERMISSION ENTRIES WITH INHERITABLE PERMISSION ENTRIES FROM THIS OBJECT Double click the entries: USERS, CREATOR and ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES For each entry:
TYPE: Select Allow Applies to: Select This key and subkeys Click/Check: Full control and Read Click OK on Entry detail screen Click OK on Entries list screen

I know very little about Windows Registry other than not to touch it. These changes seem quite extreme. Can someone tell me what they are basically doing?
The software company is being a little coy. I just want to understand what I am doing.

Any assistance appreciated.

Thanks

A:Registry edit required to get some software to work.

Hi there

IMO the SOFTWARE providers should do all this in their install setup. The only time you should have to make registry changes should be for an emergency fix and even then they should be able to send you a .reg file which will do it automatically.

I'd be very loathe to purchase software from someone who relies on the END USER to make registry edits -- if you make a mistake you can easily hose up a system.

So I tried ESET - same problem. Then Avira - finishes installing but states ' scheduler not started ' so I cannot turn on my Anti Virus guard.

I have tried everything. I have ran CC Cleaners, Registry Cleaners, Spy Hunters, etc, etc - and tried them again in safe mode! I just want to be able to get some anti virus software working again on my PC. My Security Centre is constantly warning me that no Anti Virus software is installed and I am scared to use my online banking because of this.

Hope you can help guys

I need help, fast. I believe that my computer has been under siege by a virus, trojan, worm, SOMETHING for a good month now. I couldn't really tell that it was there. I only started getting major signs last week. I scan everything with McAfee over fifteen times and it turned up nothing except a few unwanted programs (IGetNet being one of them). I told Mcafee to delete them. It didn't, but said it did. The computer began shutting itself down a lot. Upon one restart, McAfee said it had a virus. I scaned again. Nothing. Nothing at all.

This morning, the virus finally comprmised my system. Windows won't start. It says "Operating system not found on any devices. Press any key to try again." I tried F10 and told it to detect the drives (I have 2 drives installed, BTW). It only detected the A drive and the CD-Rom drive. Both of my hard drives were missing. I tried a startup disk. I still couldn't get to C drive or F. I CAN'T EVEN FORMAT THE DANG THING!!!

Can anyone help me? I have a Compaq Presario 5000.

A:Immediate help required...

Not sure how you do a clean install on Compaq (if it has the boot OS on the hard drive) but for future info...you need to disable System Restore in XP and ME before cleaning a virus...then you can enable it again.

I have a serious issue with my computer. Its a long story that started almost an year ago, but I'll try to keep it is as short as possible.

Here are the CPU-Z images of my PC's hardware and other info:

Almost an year ago, my PC went through high voltage, causing the motherboard, power supply, RAM and graphic card to burn down.

I got the pc fixed from a store, used motherboard, PSU and RAM were installed, all had warranty.

Since then, I have replaced the motherboard 4 times on warranty, RAM once, Hard drive twice. The PC has gone through mind bending problems that can't even be described easily.

After every fix, the PC start off well, then the performance deteriorates from time to time. It starts off with minor problems like, the menus of different programs like notepad getting weird, the programs going into different resolution automatically like full screen even hiding the start menu, then the browsers and other softwares keep crashing at different intervals, then the frequent blue screen errors and sometimes a weird motor like sound for 2 seconds after which the system restarts automatically.

On top of that, the system worked fine even when I changed the motherboard, RAM and hard disk, one by one while other 2 things being the same.

I also noticed the screen of my BIOS has also become quite weird, like a full screen program.

Finally, it all ends into a major issue, after which I can't use my PC at all with issues like no display when I switch ... Read more

Hi guys,

I'm new to the forum but could really do with some advice. I've got a Packard Bell IMEDIA 1529 desktop which won't boot up at all. When I hit the power switch the processor fan kicks in and the system makes a small clicking sounds which repeats every second or so. I've removed the memory, disconnected the harddrive and removed all expansion cards on board and still get the exact same response.

This pretty much leaves me with a processor and motherboard.

Any suggestions short of scrapping the system?

The best and wisest thing you can do is get a new computer. The Packard Bell IMedia 1529 has an extremely high failure rate, exceeded only by 14 eMachines models.
You will spend a lot of money to fix it but will still have a below par machine.
You can save, and perhaps use, the hard drive and memory... but the rest is junk.
The clicking sound is usually the sound of a hard drive failure, but can also be a failed power supply... since you say you still get the noise with the hard drive removed.
Look carefully on the motherboard for any little barrell-shaped devices to see if any are bulding or split open, or have a brownish or rust colored dust around them. That would mean failed capacitors.
Look, also, for a large chip somewhere near the middle of the motherboard, or to the oppisite third of the board from the CPU. That chip oftentimes pulls out or becomes loose.
The fan for the CPU heatsink could have failed, and will be inexpensive to replace (get both the heatsink and fan for your particular motherboard and processor.
But my guess is that your motherboard has failed and will never work properly again.... and a new one costs a technician about $45 (US) but could cost you $160

First of all I'm a newby to the group and I'm in need of some advice regarding my PC.

The problem which I'm getting is when I turn my PC on it will sometimes start without a problem but other times it will keep restarting. Even sometimes it will boot up but after a while it will shut down and the monitor will go black and the PC will restart... its making the bleeping noise no probs with that.

I was just wondering if someone could help me with this problem. All the fan's in my unit are working fine.

Any help and advice will be great.

Karen

P.S I have also formatted my PC and installed the basics... but now its starting to do it again.

When a critical error occurrs in Windows XP, the system will reboot automatically by default. After the reboot, Windows will then usually show a dialogue with the explanation that the system has recovered from a critical error and will offer to submit this error to Microsoft.
Most of the time these spontaneous reboots are rather unique and are not an immediate cause for alert. However, if the situation is recurring, there is probably something wrong in the system configuration. To get a good idea of what is wrong, it is best to disable the option to automatically restart the system after a failure, but to let it show the error message instead.

To do so, please perform the following steps:
1. Right-click My Computer.
2. Select Properties.
3. In the System Properties, select the tab Advanced.
4 In the box called Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
5 A new window will open:

6. Uncheck the box "Automatically restart" in the group System Failure
7. Confirm the changes in both Windows by clicking OK.
Whenever a critical system failure occurs now, you will see a blue screen with a cryptic description of the error. However, the content of this message might help in finding the appropriate solution to the problem.

Note: Most of the critical errors are due to faulty driver installations or incorrect BIOS settings. Especially in case of misbehaving drivers, the blue screens often list the filename of the driver that caused the crash.

First, Thank You for all of the help that I have benefited from already by reading other threads here, much appreciated.

I had some compatibility issues with Symantec Norton Internet Security and Norton AntiVirus. The Internet Security was not letting me disable it in order to log on to my computer system at work, and given that I do work from home at least one day a week, this was a serious problem.

I decided to delete these programs and reload them.

Unfortunately, I only had the AntiVirus program available and not the Internet Security.

Long story short, I get the System32.exe virus and a few other nasty pests.

Thanks to advice in other threads, I have rid myself of all viruses including system32.exe

I have loaded up Sygate Personal Firewall, and it seems to work much better then Norton Internet Security did for me.

The issues remaining are as follows;

I cannot access any CD's on my CD ROM-DVD drive.

I can access a remote CD Write drive though.

I am getting a rather embarrassing website showing up as my homepage despite removing it several times as far as I can tell.

I have run hijackthis and removed some things that seem obvious to be removed, and some that I don't wish to have startup, including AOL Instant Messenger and MSN Instant Messenger. (I like the programs, but only want to open them when I would like)

Problem is, when I reboot, these programs keep showing up again when I check using hijackthis again.

I have also added to my machine AdAw... Read more

I suggest running a couple more online scans...to eliminate lingering malware as a consideration.Please try a couple of these free online scanners to see if anything has slipped by your protection:(Be advised that some of these scanners will pickup things in "quarantine" from other anti-virus programs - so review the results carefully)http://www.pandasecurity.com/homeusers/solutions/activescan/http://us.mcafee.com/root/mfs/default.asphttp://housecall.trendmicro.comhttp://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.htmlhttp://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtmlhttp://onlinescan.avast.com/http://ca.com/us/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspxhttp://www.eset.com/onlinescan/http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner Scan Only - no removalIf you find that you're infected (or the scan doesn't complete or closes unexpectedly), post in the Am I Infected forum located here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/f/103/am-i-infected-what-do-i-do/Post back with whatever results .That error message seems to have more to do with MS.NET (which is a prerequisite for installing ATI drivers) rather than the ATI drivers themselves. Hi, wondering if anyone can help.
I'm currently studying an HND Software Dev course. Part of it is to creating a record system in C++. I've just started the coding, so what I have at the moment is really quick and dirty.

Basically, as you enter my program, you asked to enter a password to continue - the password is 'password' (no quotes)
Once the correct password is in, you get to the main menu where you can:
add a record, alter a record, display all, display one, load the admin menu and exit the program.

My problem just now is teh exit function -- it seems to not want to work if i decide to initialise password() before menu()
i.e. if instead or writing password in the code below, i put menu, my exit routine works.

Code:

main()
{
printf("\n\n\t\t Welcome to K.E.F.S -- Kenny's Electronic Filing System");
printf("\n\n\n\t\t please press any key to start ");

getch(); // gets the signal from the user to proceed
clrscr(); // wipes the screen
password(); // calls the password section
return(0);
};

this just now is my exit function

Code:

void close()
{
clrscr();
printf("\n\n\t\t Program had ended, please closed this box");
};

I have included the whole program if anyone wants to look over it (didn't want to post the whole code )

If it helps, this is my setup:
Windows XP Pro /with SP2

any pointers, suggestions or criticisms are welcom... Read more

A:a little C++ help required

main() needs a type. int

In c++, the return 0 at the end of main() is redundant. When main() successfully reaches the end of its scope, that's equal to return 0;

In c++, whenever you include a standard C header, so you can use a C function, you include the C-wrapper instead. e.g. to include stdio.h, you include <cstdio>. Also, it's <iostream> and not <iostream.h>. Also, functions in the standard headers live under the std namespace;
Code:

#include <iostream>

using namespace std;

int main() {
cout << "\n" << "Hello, world!" << endl;
}
In password(), you call menu() and it jumps around everywhere, but when it's done, password() continues on. The break, is just a marker. It doesn't isolate the code after it. I suggest dumping the break and use the loop to your advantage.
clrscr() isn't available for every setup of conio.h. Consider using a method that works in both windows and at list *nix systems.
Code:

#include <iostream>
#include <cstdlib>

using namespace std;

void clearScreen() {
#ifdef _WIN32
system("cls");
#else
cout << "\033c" << flush;
#endif
}

Also, in c++, you have the string class. It'd be wise to use it instead of char arrays.

e.g.

Code:

#include <iostream> // not <iostream.h> - for cout, endl etc.
#include <string> // for string class
#in... Read more

I am needing some help to fix up my parents computer. They contracted a virus called Win7 Antispyware, which affected their Internet. I tried to access their computer via Remote Access and found that many of their system options had been disabled. They used superantispyware to remove the virus, and it has removed it superficially and they are no longer getting the redirects and annoying popups. Now that I'm sitting in front of their computer, I have found that it has disabled .exe files from shortcuts, but I can still run some files (i.e. systempropertiesremote.exe, itunes.exe) from their actual locations.

Have attached the DDS logs and Attach zip.
I am a pretty basic user so anything you can suggest would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

*ps. since running the DDS application, I have removed limewire, I wasn't aware that this was even installed on the computer until then.

Hi,

I have a problem with one of the PC's at work. It started on Friday last week where Symantec notified of a virus by the name of Packed.Generic.200. The PC automatically rebooted but then froze on the welcome screen. This kept on happening, so i started in Safe Mode and ran Malwarebytes.

This picked up several threats which it cleared apart from one. The one in question goes by the vendor name of Trojan.Agent with a file name of UACINIT.DLL.

No matter what i have tried it just won't shift.

I can now start the PC in normal, however, it has disabled all network resources, e.g. Internet, Email, Server files etc.

The LAN is saying it is connected but no packet data is being sent or received.

Can anybody help? The Malwarebytes logs taken this morning are below:

I have a Draytek 2820n modem/router set up to accept VPN connections. I have three PC's at home connected to this router. I also have a laptop that I connect wirelessly to it. All are working fine with 100% connections.

Now I want to be able to use the laptop remotely and access my drives when I am away from home. I set the Draytek up to accept VPN connections.
I am using the Draytek SmartVPN Client on the laptop. I took the laptop to my sisters place and connected wirelessly to the internet. All fine so far. I then created a VPN connection to my home router using PPTP and it connected fine and is showing up in the Network control panel. I then tried pinging my PC's at home and all three responded to the pings.

The problem is connecting to the drives. It just will not allow any connections to the drives at all. I even used net use z: \\pcname\e and net use z: \\192.168.0.7\e and it just timed out.

Looking at the properties it says it does not have internet access but there seems no way to enable this.

Any help appreciated for a much frustrated person

John Veldthuis

Welcome to Seven Forums!

This sounds like a firewall problem somewhere. By some chance have you tried in any other remote locations beside your sister's house?

How does W7 classify the network? Home, Public? Unknown? This relates to how W7 sets the firewall.

Also take a look at the output of the ipconfig all command. Look at the tunnel and see if it has a DNS address assigned.

Do you use Homegroups at all? If not you can disable IPV6 so it doesn't get in the way.

Hi Folks

In the last couple of days my computer has been freezing all the time but not actually coming up with an error message for me to trace so I have done a Kaspersky on line scan that has come back clean and I have also ran Adaware Pro and Spydoctor which both found the usual negligable tracking cookies which I then deleted.

Also my browsers both FF and IE 6 have been running really slowly.I have a 2Meg connection so I did a ping test and my connection speed is 1.9 Meg.

This has left me to try the HJT to see if this is where the problem lies.I would appreciate it if one of the lads or lasses that are in the know would take a peek at this HJT log and post back if there is anything suspect on it that I know not of.

Thanks in advance Colzie

Hi everyone

I'm new to this forum so I apologise in advance if I've gone about anything here in the wrong way.
My problem is this:

Yesterday my PC was working fine, but today a problem occurs everytime I log on.

After 3 or 4 minutes a blue screen appears telling me that a serious error has occured and the system must shut down. It advises me to check any recently installed programs to make sure that they've been correctly installed.

The thing is, I haven't installed any programs recently - certainly not since yesterday.

At the bottom of the screen it shows the following:

***STOP: 0x000000F4 (0x00000003, 0x828B6DA0, 0x828B6F14, 0x805FA7A8)
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hello everybody.

I made a template in Macromedia Flash, and I am having a problem with it. When I enter too much text, the flash buttons on my left navbar seperate and the gap between them gets bigger as the text i enter increases.

Example of main page where buttons are normal:

http://www.mixx941.com/flash

Examples of pages where buttons are with gap:

http://www.mixx941.com/flash/credits/

http://www.mixx941.com/flash/weather/

I have attached the source code of the main page, and also the source of the template.

What I am wondering is if some guru here could give me an example of how I would edit the template to make this not happen.

In the past, I have heard valign, but I don't know how to do that, or where to put it.

Thanks A Bunch!

Do yourself a favor and spend $40 for a broadband router! You'll have both of the systems connected and running in a flash, and you won't have to tinker with ICS and having the host computer turned on to use the Internet.

Configuring ADSL connection with SmartAX MT841 modem
my friend has a ADSL connection with huawei modem SmartAX MT841 ,connected to my PC via a USB cable.The accompanying CD contains a USB linux driver and instructions for redhat 8
The instructions are as follows
1) Log in as root
2) Cd /usr/src
3) Copy orginal codes to /root/MT841
4) Make clean
5) Make all
6)
add alias eth1 CDCEther to /etc/modules.conf
7) modify /etc/modules.conf
vi /etc/modules.conf with:
pre-install CDCEther modprobe a ABC XYZ where ABC is the 1st n/w driver and XYZ is the 2nd n/w driver
8) copy CDCEther.o to /lib/modules/2.4.x/kernel/drivers/usb
9) reboot linux connect USB cable to ADSL
10) cd /root/MT841
insmod ./CDCEther
11) ifconfig eth0 down
ifconfig eth1 192.168.1.3 up

now step 7 is where my doubt is how can I identify a network driver file???
Now some of my friends told me that it is the entry corresponding to eth? In the /etc/modules.conf file .now in his /etc/modules.conf file there is no entry corresponding to eth? Except the entry made by me in the step 6 .
Now my question is how should I modify the /etc/modules.conf file as given in the step 7 that is
pre-install CDCEther modprobe a ABC XYZ
i.e what values should I give for ABC and XYZ ????
(please note I am only a beginner in these matters so please be kind)

Hello Kev!n and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. the first thing we need to do is update the operating system on this computer.Your operating system is extremely out of date. By not keeping the OS updated the computer is vulnerable to every infection on the net and in emails today and trying to repair an unpatched system is virtually impossible. For update purposes, Microsoft has even stopped supporting a system that is this far out of date. Go to the Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1.a site and install Service Pack 1a. Once that is done, go back to the Windows Update site and install all available Critical Updates but do not install SP2 at this time. This will patch the system with the most current security fixes and plug all the known holes which are present on this system. If you are not on a broadband connection the Service Pack can be obtained from Microsoft for a nominal shipping fee.After all of the updates have been performed post a new HijackThis log back here using the Add Reply button and I will review it when it comes in.Cheers.OT

Hi,

My computer is installed with Windows XP Service pack 2 version 2002.

When i click the start icon i noticed that i do not have the RUN option. Also when i go to Start>Programs>Accessories>Entertainment, its empty and also The windows installed games have been uninstalled like minesweeper, solitare etc. I dont even have the volume control option and in start button or on my taskbar. Also the task manager does not appear when i press Ctrl+Alt+Del.

Also when i attach a device like an mp3 player, cell phone, camera etc, it signals that the device is connected for just 1 second and then disconnects.

Can you please help me in restoring these items back on my pc

Thanks
Warren

Welcome to TSF.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. Windows XP's search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that Search system folders, Search hidden files and folders, and Search subfolders are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Reboot into Safe Mode (hit F8 key until menu shows up). Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

I had an issue with a computer playing up - I thought the best thing was to reinstall Vista. Which I did - unfortuntley it didn't boot up. So I tried the install again - this time when I got to the vista screen it couldn't see any hard drives. I am thinking a new hard drive will cure the problem. The BIOS doesn't see the hard drive either, tried restting to optimal defaults - removing the battery. But it still doesn't see any hard drives - its an Acer x3810 - with an Hitchai hard drive --

Any ideas - could it be the hard drive ?

A:New HDD required?

Hmmm ... Does your BIOS offer hard drive diagnostics? (Some do, perhaps not all)
If so, you could start there...

Otherwise, use tools provided by Hitachi (click on this link to download from Hitachi)

Note that this is an iso, which will need to be burned to a cd to make it bootable.
You will then make your CD/DVD drive bootable in your BIOS / System Configuration.
Then run the tools.

This package will tell you if your drive is repairable, or if it should be replaced.
As I recall, it includes SMART diagnostics, as well as low-level repair tools.

A:dvd-rw help required please

I'd first try to determine if the drive is really defective. Does it show up in My Computer? Does it have any error codes associated with it in Device Manager?

If the drive is easily removable, chances are good that it may be a generic laptop drive, though many laptops use proprietary drives as well.

What is the exact part number and description of the drive, it should be on a label on the drive?

So, I was sitting here googling some sites on "cat in the hat theme" for a Dr.Seuss day for my kids tmr. I get a "googleupdate.exe" file origin; hard drive on this computer. message, and all of my internet explorer disapeared! THEN! I reopened it, and the googleupdate won't go away... also, my c:/ drive has completely disapeared, and states it's corrupt... and I'm getting system errors pop up 20 at a time.. "Hard drive clusteres are partly damaged. Segment load failure" or something along those lines also pops up. Anyone know what kind of virus I've stupidly gotten???

It prompted me to run a system restore scan... it repeatively tells me that my c:/ is damaged. My entire desktop has disapeared aside from my trash can, and my start list is empty aside from 6-7 microsoft programs :| Help???

Hey everyone ,

Got a problem here...

Basically, my USB is transferring slow, around the speed of USB1.

Now im pretty darn sure i have USB2 ports...

checked device manager - Enhanced controlled check!
checked motherboard manual - USB2 supported check!

So i plug in devices... iPod, Cellphone - no "slow port detected" message which is good!

Yet i still am transferring so slow... im trying to upload music/movies onto my cellphone etc, and it takes about a minute per song... Way too long! Just as slow on my iPod.

Did a check of my IRQs in msinfo32, is seems my USB ports are on IRQs

----------------

IRQ 20 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller OK
IRQ 21 SiS 7001 PCI to USB Open Host Controller OK
IRQ 23 SiS PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller OK

----------------

These things are on IRQ 9 just incase you needed to know, which ive heard are generally used for USB.

IRQ 9 Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System OK
IRQ 9 SCSI/RAID Host Controller OK

Im running on windows xp
Any help greatly appreciated, this is killing me!

Thanks in advance!

Theres probably a ton of posts like this one, but I'll give it a go...........I can always bump it next week......;-)

I am planning on buying a digital camera for a family member at Xmas. Although I have little experience in this field, it's something I am keen to learn.
In my local superstore they are selling the Fujifilm Finepix A330 camera for 99. From my limited knowledge of cameras this seems like a good deal. Anyone agree or have experience with this type of camera?

The camera I buy will be for a first-time user (so ease-of-use is a essential requirement) and the budget is in the 70-100 range. The camera will just be used for run-of-the-mill holiday/family photographs, nothing too fancy, If anyone has any suggestions as to camera models etc Id appreiciate it. Ive checked dabs.com and ebuyer for camera's but the choice is so vast, it's difficult to work out the best deals.

Thank you for any help/pointers.

go to start > run > cmd > enter > type in ipconfig /release, wait for it to clear, then type in ipconfig /renew. Your wireless card is not getting an IP addy from the dhcp server.

thanks,

Hi guyz,

I am going through the implementation of EFS on windows XP and DC 2003. Can you please help me reagarding the following questions:

1. what is meant by the EFS self-signs a certificate? Actually I want to implement the EFS on our critical systems i.e. the system which are used my the higher managements and also on the laptops. I am going throught the deatiled document of MS:
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb457116.aspx

2. As I am going through this document I am realizing that I can also implement it for the Domain as well I mean we should encrypt all the databases on our file server and only the domain users will have access to the databases for any other intruder it will be encrypted. But I am thinking one point say for example I apply the policy that every computer will have EFS enabled on his/her system, now what will happen if a user attaches any file or data with the email from his local system on the domain?? I mean will it be in the unencrypted form or will it be in the encrypted format and when the user will try to download the attached file from his/her home it will be encrypted?

Thanks in advance
