Q: Solved: outlook express has changed to microsoft outlook with PROBLEMS!!

Hi all at Techguy, I hope someone can help me!!!

My outlook express has changed to Microsoft outlook! This has also caused me problems with Word and Excel.
I cannot open any ‘e’ mails in outlook express as it says there is an error. I can go back to a restore point fro a few days ago and all is fine, a day later it changes again to Microsoft outlook and the same problems occur.

When I try and open a word or excel document it says preparing to install!!

I can not open attachments in my outlook also!!

I have AVG as my Anti virus protectiion
I run SpyBot on a daily basis
I run Ad-Aware on a weekly basis

gang I found an old post here that describes my situation, something I caused but don't know how to undo.
The system in question has Windows XP Professional, and MS Office 2000 Professional, the main reason for which is OUTLOOK. When Outlook cranks up it triggers an error message which is in my subject line:
"Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater....". The system of course also has OE6 on it which we don't use, but it does work etc.

The issue is me: I use autoruns to shut off everything non-mandatory, and, as another thread-poster identified, there is something in the list of goods that I have disabled that OE is dependent on, if I understand the old thread properly. The problem is that the poster [OP] in that thread said he found the key, but he didn't NAME THE ENTRIES
Thus, I dunno which ones he reversed that made the issue go away.

if anyone knows, pls let me know, so I can fix my goof.

thx
Z

Hi,
Recently I have noticed my Dell Vostro laptop has been very slow in booting to a point where I can actually do something with any speed.

I had been reading various forums regarding the problem and the general consensus was that removing unnecessary start-up programs would assist. This I did, and included in it was the removal of Outlook Express as a start-up as I never use it.

I was rather startled to find that the next time I started up Outlook I get the message indicated in the title. When acknowledging the message, Outlook still opens and functions correctly as far as I can see, but this message always coming up is getting a little tedious.

Why would a company require the lesser of two programs to be loaded and started in order that their more powerful program should work? Amazing thought processes at MS.

I have seen answers for this question elsewhere and I have tried their solutions but to no avail. That includes setting IsInstalled in registry key 881dd1c5-3dcf-431b-b061-f3f88e8be88a to a Dword value of 1.

What I have found, is the key {44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} and {7790769C-0471-11d2-AF11-00C04FA35D02} in registry directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\AutorunsDisabled. As the first refers to Outlook Express 6 and the other to Address Book 6 I assume that this may have something to do with my problem.

If they are the problem, is there a way of moving these keys out of AutorunsDisable and back into Instal... Read more

My friend just had her computer reformatted after a bad virus contamination. It is still running EXTREMELY slow but has at least been running correctly. She is running XP

Yesterday I installed Microsoft Office 2003 for her with Microsoft Outlook and now her email doesn't seem to be working. She uses Outlook Express as her mail default rather than Office Outlook but keeps getting the error message that it can't find the POP3.

I also installed AVG for her and have shut off the email plugin to see if that is part of the problem.

The thing is, it happened yesterday right after I installed these programs for her but then a minute later her email worked just fine. Now she just restarted her computer and the mail won't work again.

Is there something wrong with her computer or is it at the server?

I hope this all makes sense.

Hello All,

I was backing up all my e-mails and mistakenly changed all the files (DBX) to open with a XML Editor. How do I restore them all to the original file, the file that you can not open.

Second, after I reformat my drive (XP-Home), How do I "import" them back to my Microsoft Outlook Express ?

Thanks

I don't use microsoft's outlook because I don't care for it.... but in haste while right clicking to save a image, I have on occasion, clicked send to by accident. This starts a whirlwind of chaos for my computer and often will lock everything up. I know that esc should stop a macro, but in this case it does not. The macro tries to run and I am stuck waiting for windows to attempt to open my email program by opening 20 - 30 new windows! How do I over ride the window's attempt to use outlook and have it instead use my yahoo or aol email program? Or is there a way to disable send to all together?
Thank you for your help in this matter.

I'm not sure if this is where to post this but I have Microsoft Outlook Express 5 for e-mail on my Windows XP system. The problem I can't figure out how to correct is that on several e-mails when I attempt to open from the inbox or sent items, I get an error box "Outlook Express has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I've tried deleting messages to free up space and using the system restore - no success.

I would greatly appreciate any ideas for solving this problem.

Thanks so much for any help in advance!

Yes, I just recently installed Microsoft Office 2010 Pro onto my computer. I have run into a bit of a problem. I wanna make Microsoft Outlook 2010 the default email client for my user side and I wanna leave Outlook Express as default for another user on my computer. I cannot seem to figure out how to do this because once you pick a default email program on one user desktop it also makes it the default for other users on the computer. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello again kapilkaaiser,
I think you need to import the required info into Outlook 2007 -

In Outlook 2007, click File > Import and Export > Make the appropriate choices

This morning as I trawled the spam queues a sense of deja-vu descended on me when this subject line caught my eye:
Update for Microsoft Outlook / Outlook Express (KB910721)
Didn?t I see this a while ago and didn?t it contain a rather nasty Trojan?
The format of the October version differs slightly in that it includes a link to a website from which you may download the ?Microsoft/Outlook/Outlook Express Update? rather than an attached executable.

How do I make Microsoft Outlook the default email program? I make the change in IE version 5, but when I reboot the system (Win 98), Outlook Express is once again selected as the default email program.

I read in a previous post about using the following sequence for making Outlook Express the default. Is there anything similar for Microsoft Outlook? :
------------------------------------------------------
To make Outlook Express your default e-mail client:
Close OE, click Start/Run and enter this command line, complete with quotes, spaces and the /reg switch:

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /reg
---------------------------------------------------------

Thanks very much,

Use the "Import" feature of Outlook Express. if you choose to import "All" folders, it will include all messages and contacts data. or you can choose to import only contacts and not messages.

Obviously, it requires that both Outlook & Outlook Express are currently installed on the same PC.
Go here for a short tutorial: http://www.ehow.com/how_6374425_import-outlook-outlook-express.html

However, it must be pointed out that, for backup purposes, it's much easier to back up data in Outlook than is the case with Outlook Express.

It is possible and you can either export from the File menu in Outlook or import the same way using OE. However, if you already have problems, it may be that your data file is too big for Outlook to handle. Check this by opening My Computer and from the Tools menu, select Folder Options then View. Tick to "Show hidden files an dfolders" and untick "Hide protected system file and folders". Click Apply, accept the warning and OK your way out.

Next, navigate to Documents and Settings>{yourusername}Local Settings>Application Data>Microsoft>Outlook and if your Outlook Data File (type .pst) is larger than 2Gb, go back into Outlook and delete anything you can to trim it down.

Outlook Express will also suffer an overstuffed data file but if you can't do without your historic e-mails, Mozilla Thunderbird can handle up to 4Gb.

Well here's a switch! Doc's needs everyones help for a change.

My mom's computer cannot send and recieve mail on either M/O & O/E. Problem started this yesterday morning some time and I cannot seem to put my finger on the problem.

She runs XP Pro and lives 8hrs away from me, so anything I do is via "remote desktop" and she only has "dialup". Talk about a painful process!

When I click on send and recieve it appears that a connection is being made to the server and infact it even tells me how many messages are there to download. It then starts to download (or appears to) and then suddenly stops and posts an error message stating that the connection to the server was interrupted.

I ran a test on my computer by configuring my M/O using here inbound settings and such and was able to download all her mail without a problem. That leads me to believe the problem is not the server but, infact on her machine.

I have checked all the basic things that I can think of but, at the moment "I'm stumped"

Ideas?

Doc.

A:Microsoft Outlook & Outlook Express

If she's running an antivirus package that does a virtual IP proxie for the incoming/outgoing email AV check, then that might be the source of the problem. Try disabling virus checking for email and see if the behavior changes (This is a known bug in Norton, McAffee, and Avast, but it's rather rare. Usualy only happens for large outgoing attachments).

Also, since this is Dialup, I would check the actual modem to see if there's a problem on the line (or wityh the hardware). To much noise on the line can lead to droped packets and/or decreased bandwidth.

Try using Mozilla Thunderbird 1.0 and see if there's still the same problem under that.

Hi,
can anyone give me a step by step description, how i can export my Emails and the Address book from Outlook Express 6 to another Computer which runs also Outlook Express 6?
I tried already to export the Address book but it only allows me to export it as a *.csv-File and after i put the data on my usb stick and try to import it on my new computer by File - Import - Addressbook, the program keeps asking me for a *.wab-File? (btw: i can only use the: "Text File (Comma Separated Values))" Option, when exporting the address book.

Export and Import from email messages doesn't work either.

Has anyone a really step-by-step description how to do this??

A:Solved: Import & Export from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook Express 6

Hi wizzle2003

When you are ready to Import the .csv file on the destination computer,
In Outlook Express,
File > Import > Other Address Book
You should then be given the option to choose a Text File (Comma Separated Values)
Then Browse to the .csv file to complete the Import.
Enable Show Hidden Files and folders:

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the check mark for Hide Extensions for known file types.
To locate the directory where Outlook Express keeps it's message store:
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab > Store Folder
Note the location, then Cancel out of the window.

Navigate to that directory, copy all the .dbx files to a folder on the Desktop.
Copy those files to a folder on the Desktop of the destination computer.
If you are using a Flash drive to transfer the files, it may take a couple of transfers to complete.

Once all the .dbx files are on the Destination computer,
Open Outlook Express,
Tools > Import > Messages > Microsoft Outlook Express 6 > Next
Select: Import mail from an OE 6 store directory
Click: OK
Browse to the folder containing the .dbx files on the Desktop.
When you reach the Finish button,
You should see a "Congratulations Your data was successfully imported"

If there is more than one Identity in Outlook Express, switch to the other Identities in Outlook Express and repeat the steps above.

A:Outlook Express Changed Computer Connection

Hi Mary

You may want to double-check your Mail setup with Roadrunner. Phone support is included in their service. The POP3 incoming mail server here in Southern California is simply named pop-server.socal.rr.com --- if Rochester follows the same naming pattern, they should be pop-server.rochester.rr.com [Update - I just checked, and yes, Rochester's incoming POP3 server is named pop-server.rochester.rr.com --- and the SMTP out-going server is named smtp-server.rochester.rr.com]. Your previous settings aren't quite right just yet.

Why not redo your account from scratch. It's not a problem to see a login screen when you first start Outlook. Things are a bit more secure logging in each time. In your Internet settings, however, make sure that any dial-up connections leftover in the "Connections" tab are fully removed.

I noticed you had a malware issue in the HiJack This forums here at Tech Support Forums -- make sure to follow up on that: malware infections will attempt to modify your connection settings & attack your systems security setup. If unsure how to proceed, here's a link to the 5-Step Security Checklist process --- http://www.techsupportforum.com/secu...sting-log.html

Yikes! I went to Hotmail.com yesterday and changed my password. Went back to Outlook Express where I have several email accounts and I found that the one Hotmail account that had the new password wasn't able to send/receive messages. I thought this was probably due to the new password so I attempted to change the p/w within Outlook Express. That didn't work - I know very little about Outlook Express, I generally don't fool with Identities or passwords but now I've messed it up. Any ideas on how to repair this?

Here's what I see:

I click Outlook Express
An "Identities Login" window pops up
There are 5 identities showing, one is highlighted, I think this is the one that has the new p/w
I click Manage Identities> same 5 Identities I saw previously. I highlight the one that I belive has the new p/w (it's hard to tell b/c there are 3 that have very similar names) then I click"Properties"
I get a "Confirm P/W" window
I enter the new p/w I had used in Hotmail.com but I get a msg that says "P/W you typed is incorrect"

My Microsoft Outlook changed. It used to be that when I clicked on Start/Email Microsoft Outlook that another window would come up where I had to enter a user name and password. Then it showed all my folders including the inbox in a list on the lefthand side and any emails were listed in a window on the right side and to read them I would click on the one I wanted to read.
Now when I click on those icons Outlook opens up without asking for my user name and password and inbox is not in the list on the left with the others. It is in an address box on top like when you type in an internet address in Internet Explorer. Also I do not receive any emails. I used to get some every day. Now I don't get any.

I am brand new to this so would appreciate any help I can get. For about a week, when I send an email it automatically goes to my Outbox and sits there. Took me a couple of days to find this out as I have not had this problem before. What was happening was that everytime I sent an email - all the ones sitting in my outbox went AGAIN and my friends were getting multiple copies of the same thing. I have looked on all of the headings and have checked out options under tools and as far as I can see my emails are set up to just send normally. The only way I am preventing this multiple sending now is that each time I send an email, I have to go to the outbox and remove it. The email is actually sent the first time but does not show up in the sent box either. I have tested this by sending myself a copy and I always get it. I can find no way to solve this problem. You should ring your Internet Service Provider and check ( Account: 'mail1.eircom.net', Server: 'mail.icecomms.net',) Account and Server name`s are correct.
It sounds like one of the above have changed and the only way to check is to ring your ISP.

Example would be opening it in Word and the sending it to someone, and that person will not receive it, it keeps saying sending 1 of 10 messages, but it doesn't actually send anything.

I am able to forward messages, able to open the attachments as well.

TIA

After saving email to floppy and trying to access the file I get a pop-up that says

Windows can't find blank.exe .
This program is needed for opening files of type 'EML FILE'.

I get the same message when trying to access image files in an email, what to do?

Spell check won't work. I get the following error message, "An error occured while the speeling was being checked." What to do?

And is there a way to re-install OLE 6 without loosing all mail in my local folders and address book?

Thanks, Jerry

Have been experiencing several problems with OE 6 for some time, such as the following:
1) When trying to move (or copy) similar items from Inbox to an appropriate Folder - in bulk - many times I either get a 'no-can-do' message or some will copy while others don't and a 'can't open' message will appear for all the items left that won't copy/move. None of the latter will open now. The alternative is to move them one at a time, and this takes a LONG time to do.
2) When moving Spam type items to the Spam folder - one at a time - after about a dozen of them successfully, they will not budge. The only way to do this is to shut the thing (OE)down and open it up again. (I always delete everything from the Deleted Folder as I move the Spam stuff to that folder. I have OE set up to auto delete anyway when it shuts down.)
3) There might be a capacity problem here - is this possible? - since I have many hundreds (if not thousands) of messages stored in OE.
Any ideas on this would be appreciated.

I am trying to insert an image into an email I have created using Outlook Express 6.

Following the help guide:

1. Click the place in the message where you want the image to appear.
2. On the Insert menu, click Picture, and then click Browse to find the image file.

When I click Picture, a pop up window appears, but is completely blank with no dialogue or file selection options. The header of the pop up includes only the I.E icon, and nothing else.

I have tinkered around with settings, both in Outlook Express and my browser, but nothing seems to make a difference. I've also tried copying an image to clipboard, then going to my email message and attempting to paste the image, but the paste option appears to be disabled.

What am I likely to be doing wrong?

Might something be switched off, or corrupted with my Outlook Express installation?

Incidentally, I can copy and paste text into Outlook Express without problem. Go figure?

All constructive suggestions are welcomed.

Hi,

I just launched my email and I've lost everything. It looks like a whole new program has launched (Outlook Express 6), whereas I used to have Outlook 2003. The only thing I can think of is I needed to find my email password to set up email on my mobile, so I went to Start/Programs, but all I could find was Outlook Express 6. Perhaps an automatic update has taken place. Anyway, I went to Tools/Accounts/double clicked on my username/Servers, but the password was blanked out. I therefore killed the program, but when I hit the email button on my keyboard to launch Outlook 2003, Outlook Express 6 launched, which has no emails at all.

The only thing I can think that has changed since yesterday is my Norton 360 Antivirus software expired today and I intend buying an update tomorrow. Perhaps there's a connection? What do you think happened, are my old emails stored somewhere, and how can I restore Outlook 2003?

A:Solved: Outlook 2003 Suddenly Replaced by Outlook Express 6

When you launched Outlook express do you remember that box that came up and said something along the lines of:

"outlook express is currently not your default mail application, do you want it to be?"
and you clicked yes without reading it properly...?

Well it has done exactly that. You have two email apps on your computer, one of them has to be default. when you did that you changed it to outlook express. Luckily for you it is easy to fix.

All you need to do is go into the Start menu and find Outlook 2003 and run it. It will prob be under All programs > Microsoft Office> Outlook. Run it and then you will get the same prompt as you did for outlook express about making it the default app, choose yes to this. This will now make Outlook 2003 your default email app again and fix your problem.
Let us know if this works.

Hi smelsco

Is AVG E-mail scanning enabled?

First try adjusting your Server Timeout settings:

In Outlook Express:
Tools > Accounts > Mail tab > (AccountName) > Properties
On the Advanced tab, adjust the Server Timeout settings to at least 2 minutes.
If you still receive the Timeout error, adjust the Server Timeout to 5 minutes.

If the Timeout error persists with the Server Timeout set to 5 minutes, try disabling AVG from checking outgoing emails.

Double click the AVG icon in the System Tray.
Right click the E-mail Scanner component,
Properties > Plugins tab > Configure button
Uncheck: Check outgoing mail
OK, OK to save and close.

Let us know what happens.

I carefully followed all the steps for converting from OE 6 to Outlook 2003. I have just only one email account, so I have one password. After all the neccesary steps were followed to convert to Outlook, I used that same password and saved that for Outlook. (Outlook came pre-installed on the desktop with Microsoft Office 2003).

Now, I have OE 6 and Outlook 2003 both running at the same time. OE6 can receive email as well as Outlook. And they can both send email. I don't understand how to disable OE6 because I don't want to use it any longer.

What do I need to do to have only Outlook 2003 running as my email account?

I am trying to import OE5 .dbx files from a Win2k machine to a completely different machine (Win2003) with OE6. Everytime I try to import the DBX files I get an error message stating:

"No messges can be found in this folder or another application is running that has the required files open..."

The thing is I have even tried copying the DBX files from the old machine to the new machine and importing them from a directory on the new machine. I stil get the same message!

Another strange thing is the impor facility on OE6 does not provic an option import OE5 files, only OE4 & OE6.

I've already imported my mail accounts and address book, just not my messages.

Any ideas how to fix this?

I have been using Outlook Express 6 which seems to be working fine. However, I wanted to switch to Outlook. When I try to install Outlook, I get a message that "Outlook Express 5 or higher needs to be installed." It is installed and working.
When I boot up the computer, I get a message that "Outlook Express has been removed and asks if I want to remove related files." I don't want to lose all of my stuff in Outlook Express, so I say "No" and the system continues with boot-up.
I am running Windows XP Pro with 2.53 GHz system and 1.00 GHz RAM. I have scanned for Adware, and Spyware and run a good antivirus program (Avast) which is kept up to date. I am also using Office XP.
Can someone please assist with this or will I have to do a complete "format" and start over.
Thanks for any assistance.

I just recently bought a new computer. It came with a trial version of Office 2003 which includes Outlook. My old computer used Outlook Express. I have been trying to import my dbx files from OE into the new O but it just won't cooperate with me. I have tried both methods recommended to me and both have failed. It appears I need to have OE installed on my new computer for either way to work. I haven't been able to download it because it won't let me download on older version of IE6. The XP service pack doesn't have it. I am unsure what do to at this point.

I tried this method: http://www.directron.com/movmail.html

And this one: http://www.outlook-express-backup.com/
To make matters worse, the OE on my old computer won't let me export using the program export function. I downloaded OE again hoping it would correct the problem. It didn't work.

Is there something I can do or do I need to delete 4 years worth of email. (Some of it is useless, but some of it is important.)

Any help would be greatly appreciately.

I recently did an upgrade from Win ME to WinXP Pro on my Mom's computer
Dell Dimension 8100
Not sure of specs exactly but- (sorry)
2.6Mhz P4
80GB HDD
512MB Ram

*pretty much stock Dell components for this system*

I installed Outlook
and
Outlook Express

Outlook Express is their preferred "Default" Mail handler and I have set
it up to be so.

The problems are these:

When connecting (Dial up ISP) Outlook automatically receives Mail without being opened (can hear the mail received notification).

Outlook Express was set up with two Identities, but all mail is going to just one identity.
In other words ALL mail is going into one Identity's mailbox, thus mixing up the mail and not separating it.

I checked Identities again, and it appears to be set correctly, so I don't know why all mail is defaulting to the one Identity's mailbox.

I am not familiar with Outlook or Outlook Express as I don't use those programs much, but know enough to set them up.

Can't figure this one out, please help if you have any ideas, thanks.

I have had issues with my OE the last couple of days with it locking up as soon as I open it. So I decided to use Outlook 2000 but while making the transfer, I BELIEVE it used another identity on my computer and did not transfer all of my OE folders.

I know these are dbx files..they are currently located by going thru the windows explorer procedure..is there a way for me to get them into Outlook 2000? I also understand Outlook 2000 uses a different format for it files.

Also, if I upgrade to XP SP2, will I get my Outlook Express back and working?

I've tried renaming the msimn.exe file, which merely greyed out all of the options in the Send To box.

Before I reinstall win98se, I would like to backup all my data files including my email messages. How do I backup the outlook express email files? I have attempted to use the export function, but that results in moving the email files to outlook, part of Office2000. I have also attempted to copy the .mbx files in the applications data folder, but that did not work. There must be an easy way to backup/transfer email files. I need the how-to-instructions so that I may copy the appropriate files onto a CD. After a clean-install of win 98se, I plan to copy the email files into the new OUTLOOK EXPRESS program installed by win 98se.

A:Microsoft Outlook Express

How I do it is to create a backup folder in Outlook Express. File>New>Folder. Name it “Backup”. You can right click on any item and select move or copy to folder and send it to the backup folder. To back it up just copy the folder. I store all my important e-mails semi-permanently in the backup folder to keep my inbox clear.

There are several easy ways to find it so you can back it up. You can do a search for .dbx folders and just copy the backup folder from there.

You can go Tools>Options>Maintainance>Store folder. It will give you a path to the store folder. To restore a backup just paste your backup into that store folder. You have to create the backup folder in your new Outlook Express so you can overwrite it to restore. I change the location of the store folder to something I can find easily.

You could copy the entire store folder or just the inbox. It seems it would be easier to restore to a fresh Outlook Express by just pasting in the backup folder. All my important e-mails are there where I can easily access them and I don’t clutter up my new inbox.

I would like to know if is there any way to protect or make possowrd to my microsoft outlokk express, I share my computer with my friends, and I wanna make my microsoft email personalize by creating password when logging in.

Thanks

A:Password Microsoft Outlook Express

You can do it when you set up a new identity but its not considered really secure.
This from outlook express's help files:
Identity passwords

You can configure your identity to prompt you for a password when you log on or switch from another identity. This prevents users who do not know your password from logging on as you. The password is also required to delete the identity, or change the identity settings.
Adding a password to your identity makes it more difficult for other users to access your files; however, the level of security the password provides is minimal. Even with a password, it is possible for other users to access your files.

I am posting this for my 80 year old father. I visit him about once a week, so any responses to this request will probably not be seen by me for a week. (This may take a while to resolve).

Dad first started having problems with his Outlook Express being VERY slow about a month ago. He doesn't know what he may have done to cause this.

I am not a "techie" by any stretch of the imagination, but I searched around on some different forums and found what I believed to POSSIBLY be the answer. The instructions had something to do with MSN messenger, which may have inadvertently been installed when Dad upgraded to IE 7. The instructions said to do the following:

Re:Outlook Express SLOW at loading

Hi People...Name is Phil and i am noob (5 minutes) to the forum.

Not sure if this problem ever got solved BUT in case it did not
and also for future reference here is a fix.

Here is the reason and the fix.........

Sometimes removing or disabling Windows (or MSN) Messenger causes OE to open slowly. This will be shown by an entry in the system error log:

The server {FB7199AB-79BF-11D2-8D94-0000F875C541} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout.

To fix this, open Regedit and navigate to this key:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
\CLSID
\{FB7199AB-79BF-11d2-8D94-0000F875C541}
\InProcServer32

In the right-hand pane, double-click on the (Default) value and delete whatever is entered there, leaving it blank. Click OK. Now perform exactly the same ... Read more

A:Microsoft Outlook Express 6 VERY slow

Hi NokomisEast

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

First, move messages, your Dad wants to keep, to a new folder of his own creation in Outlook Express.
When Outlook Express starts, it will load faster if the Inbox is empty. If the Inbox.dbx file becomes corrupted he could lose all his messages, as Outlook Express will create a new Inbox.dbx file if it cannot use the original one.

After emptying the Inbox folder, compact the Message Store:
Close all windows.
Open Outlook Express
File > Work Offline
Click on the Local Folders folder
File > Folder > Compact All Folders
Walk away from the computer until the process is complete.
Avoid starting this process if the possibility of a power outage is imminent such as a thunderstorm in progress.

Should the compaction process ever be interrupted, restart it before accessing any folders and allow it to finish.
After the compaction process is finished, close Outlook Express, restart the computer and start Outlook Express to see if it loads faster.

Let us know what happens.

The version of OUTLOOK EXPRESS 5 on my Toshiba Satellite 2805-S301 laptop has become corrupted and I need to reinstall it.

Unfortunately, the recovery disk that came with my laptop does not include this software.

I've gotten super frustrated trying to find it on the Microsoft site. I get all sorts of updates and patches but the only OUTLOOK EXPRESS 5 that comes up when I search their free downloads is a MAC version.

Does anyone have an idea where I can get a copy of this software online?

Many thanks

Situation: Outlook Express - Using Comcast email address.
Never had problems till a few months ago.
Problem is.... when I open my email, it tells me I got new mail (anywhere from 1-3 at a time), yet they are not showing up. Sometimes they do but usually they do not. Seems to be getting worse with time. Rare for anything to actually show up anymore. I do not seem to have a problem getting tons of junk mail but nothing much else.
I have even send myself emails for tests and some times they show up & other times they do not, even though it says new email messages.
Anyone got a clue as to where my emails are going and what I can do to correct this problem?
Thanks ahead of time for any suggestions.

I am an old guy. I tend to like Outlook Express. Some years ago I finally got it customized in terms of text size and layout the way I like. I am used to it. But, it seems to have some kind of fatal flaw - that every year or so MS OUtlook Express's InBox gets corrupted and makes either or both sending or receiving email no longer possible. It is as if after working properly for a year or two the InBox file gets to a certain size and goes haywire. Is there any remedy for this? Is there a more stable version of Outlook Express or another mail program that is very similar but more stable than OE that I can import my settings into?

I went into my Sent folder on Outlook Express and all but the past two days Sent email was gone!

My ISP does not cleanse email so I suspect that when I clicked OK when the message "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact mesages. This may take a few minutes" came on the screen it compressed imy Sent email and put it somewhere I can't find. All my deleted messages and inbox messages were untouched.

I keep my Sent mail because I sometimes need to go back and refer to a message I sent and I don't want to keep hard copy of every email.

Any ideas about what could have happened?

Thanks.

I purchased a new laptop that is running Vista Basic and that came with Microsoft Mail. I hate that e-mail program and absolutely loved Outlook Express because I could list all my e-mail addresses on the left side. This new mail program doesn't have that feature.

My question is can you use Vista Basic and download Outlook Express? If so how can I accomplish this? My other computer has Windows XP - Home.

Hi Everyone,

its my first time posting here, what an excellent resource. I wasn't able to find the solution to my problem by searching the forum threads...

I am running Windows Xp with Microsoft outlook express as the default email server. I accidentally deleted my outlook identity, as such all the emails are gone.

How can I retrieve these?

regards,
Sean

A:Deleted Microsoft Outlook Express Identity

You may be able to create a new identity and then import the email file from the message store for your old profile.

It should be located in one of these folders:

C:\Windows\Application Data\Outlook Express\{GUID}
or
C:\Documents and Settings\<User>\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{GUID}\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Hi there,

This is the first time I have used this service so hello and thanks for being free.

When i send outgoing messages to certain addresses McAfee virus scan window pops up giving me a 'protocol error' message. When I click on the error it takes me to their 'HELP' page.

But it doesn't really tell me much about protocol error's, except that my connection may have dropped. Well I can send messages to any other address and it works fine, so that can not be it.

It seems to be certain email addresses only but this does not follow suit if i send a group email. What will happen here is i select my addresses, send email and then the same error message occurs, if i then take those addresses out of the email and send again the McAfee virus scan brings up other addresses it didn't recognise the previous time.

Any ideas anyone, I'm getting a little frustrated with this now, I thought that it maybe to do with my configuration for McAfee virus scan but after turning off the option to scan outgoing messages it still does it.

PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate place for this post, but it was the closest Support Forum I could find.

I use Windows XP and Outlook Express. I've used Message Rules quite a lot and have had good success with them. Since yesterday though, I have tried to remove two obsolete rules, edit an existing rule and add two new rules. Everything seems to be fine until I log out of OE. For some reason, when I sign back in, all my changes have disappeared. The "removed" rules are back and none of my other additions or edits are anywhere to be found. I've tried this a few times now, even powering down my computer and restarting it in between, but no luck......

The only other change to my computer has been some automatic updates that Windows XP loaded 2 days ago when I shutdown my computer. I don't know if that's relevent or not, but its the only thing that is different.

Has anyone else every experienced this and what can I do to correct it?

Thanks in advance!

I use OE-6 with Windows 2002 XP Home, SP3.

For users who do not have a high level of Email activity, compacting is not necessary. It is necessary for those who generate 100`s of Emails.

So, for low level Email users - Get rid of that irritating nagging Pop-up panel that appears every time you open OE. It can be dangerous if other people use the PC and click OK to compact when the primary user does not want this. Compacting works fine for some users, but does give many problems with others. Either compact or get rid of the panel.

So, just follow this simple procedure :-

1. Close Outlook Express and all message windows.
2. Start>Run and enter without quotes "regedit".
3. Navigate to this key :-

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Identities\{GUID}\Software\Microsoft\Outlook Express\5.0 where GUID is the long number used for your Identity.
4. In the right-hand pane, double-click "Compact Check Count", delete whatever is in the Hexadecimal field and enter ZERO (0), click OK.

The panel will no longer pop up on subsequent openings of OE.

When the count again reaches 100, the panel will return - just repeat the procedure.

I use outlook express to get email from Yahoo using the pop server there.

Every once in a while, the program (outlook express) tries to condense my message files, but I get an error saying something else is using the files, (outlook) or something.

Question: how can I find out what else is accessing the files of outlook express, so that the thing can do its maintenance?
Or does anyone know what other programs would access those files?

Thanks.

Now, both my mom, and I are getting the same error message. We get it when we exit outlook express, and it tells us it needs to compact the files to save space.. we tell it to go ahead, and then it runs thru its stuff and we get this error at the end..

Can anyone tell me why, or what to look for, to correct this problem? Thanks.

Hello All,

I am trying to send a HTML email to multiple clients from my business.

I am using Outlook Express.

The error I receive is:

This message could not be sent because one of the reciepients was rejected by the server. Server response '550 Invalid recipient: <[email protected]>'.
(Account: 'pop51.****.***'
SMTP Server 'smtp10.*****.**
Error Number:0x800ccc79)

Obviously I haven't posted the actually message for personal reasons.

When I do remove the contact in question, I receive the duplicate error on another contact and so on and so forth.

I would greatly appreciate any kind of assistance.

Thank you all for looking.

MS have these suggestions:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813514

But its also possible that your ISP simply blocks any attempt to send so many emails at once. Many do now, as it limits spammers from sending unwanted trash in large quantities. Some impose limits as low as 50 at any one time.

When a page I am viewing has an email option, I was using Outlook Express to access my Hotmail to send the email. Microsoft no longer supports this. I have Windows Live Mail downloaded (like they suggested), and I have also gone into Outlook Express, tools, mail, etc. and changed everything they said to but it still will no longer work. I just get error messages. I then tried to put my Yahoo mail address in instead of the Hotmail one. Still will not send. How can I click on an "email link" in a story, etc. and get it to send?
