Q: Solved: Outlook Express "uninstalled" itself after MS update

I'm using Win XP Home and subscribe to Microsoft's automatic updates and kind of trust Bill's kids not to corrupt anything in the process.

So the other day after an update session (Service Pact 3 maybe? ) When I restarted the computer OE was totally unavailable, desktop icon gone, couldn't find in "Programs". So I am wondering what happened. I did run a "find" for .dbx files and all the OE file catagories I had before came up as still existing but I can't access them without the main program, at least with my limited knowledge.

Should I try to reinstall OE 6? And where do I find it? Or what. I have had this computer for 4 or 5 years and lots of mail is stored in the OE files. I have a secondary question, if I ever do recover my old OE can I transfer some of the files to Word or some other program that I want to archive instead of burdening OE with them.

I have accessed my current e-mails thru my ISP since the disappearnce of OE but would sure like to have the other archive files available again.

Open the Run box, press the Windows Logo key and R.
Or use, Start > Run

Key in exactly:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe"
Click: OK

Outlook Express should start.
To restore the shortcut for Outlook Express:
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Window Components (Left side of the Control Panel)
In the Add/Remove Window Components window, scroll down to Outlook Express.
If Outlook Express is checked, uncheck it.
Click Next then click Finish

Click the Add/Remove Window Components again, this time, place a check mark for Outlook Express.
Click Next then click Finish

A shortcut should now be on the Start menu, it will probably be at the end of the Start menu. From that shortcut, you can send it to the Desktop as a shortcut and drag the second shortcut to the Quick Launch bar, if desired.

This should be a basic question but I could not find the answer in Outlook Express Help. Using Outlook Express. When I send out a group email, is there a way to just have the name of the group in the "TO" box, for instance "Friends" At present, Outlook Express spells out each and every email address and this upsets some recipients.

My Outlook Express opens and immediatly starts sending messages and won't recieve unless I hit stop and then click recieve. If I let it go on sending it takes forever then ends in error. I suppose that there must be a way to delete the outgoing message, whatever it may be, so Outlook won't keep trying to send it every time I open Outlook Express. If anyone can help me I'd appreciate it. My os is Windows xp home edition. Thanks, Mike.

For Windows XP:
Enable: Hidden files and folders:
Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders,
verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
uncheck Hide Extensions for known file types
Apply, OK, to save and close.


Start > Search > For Files or Folders
All Files and Folders
key in:
Look in: Local Drives
click the arrow for More Advanced Options
place a checkmark in:
Search System Folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search subfolders
Click Search
Locate the Outbox.dbx file and rename it Outbox.old
Or just delete the Outbox.dbx file, Outlook Express will create a fresh new one.

You can also configure Outlook Express to NOT Send/Receive at startup.
Tools > Options > General tab
Uncheck: Send and receive messages at startup
Apply, OK, to save and close.

Let us know what happens.

Hello: I have this problem quite often when downloading my email through Outlook Express. It always occurs at the start of the day, never during the day, although I do “Send/Receive” dozens of times a day.

My email appears to download normally, but then I get this error message:
<<Message number 1 could not be retrieved. Account: '', Server: '', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Can't open the message file - it's gone!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800420CD>>>

Sometimes this message is followed by several more, beginning “Message number 2 could not be retrieved ...” and so on.

I know for sure of at least two recent emails which have been sent but which I’ve never received. Could this be why?

I have three questions:
1. What is this and can I fix it?
2. Can I stop it happening again?
3. Are the emails which couldn't be retrieved lost forever? Or is there any way I can read them, or at least find out who they came from, so I can ask for them to be re-sent?

(Actually, that’s about five questions, but what am I - a statistician?)

Can anyone please tell me how I can change the way the date is shown for messages received/sent. By this I mean I would like the the day/month/year to be shown, as it is now it is month/day/year and it is slightly confusing as I do not know why this has started happening. I have looked at the settings/options etc but cannot see a way to change it. Any help much appreciated, Dojo


The only way I know of, is to change your Regional settings in the Control Panel.

Click Start/Control Panel/Change to classic view/click Regional and Language and change to a format you want.

I have used Outlook Express for several years without any major complaints.

Now, however, for whatever reason, next to certain messages I find small "plus sign" boxes which allow me to expand and collapse conversations/threads, like in Newsgroups. For my e-mail set-up, I really don't care to have this function. I find it both disruptive and confusing. I liked it much better the way it was before when all my incoming messages appeared individually and precisely in chronological order. The way things are now, I often find it necessary to go back and click on "plus signs" to find new messages hidden underneath. In one thread I found a message which didn't even belong in that particular thread.

Using Outlook Express Tools I at least figured out how to automatically expand conversations rather than have them collapsed. I don't believe this solved my problem, though. I would like to get rid of the "plus signs" altogether.

Could someone please tell me how to return to the simpler set-up I once had?

Strange how these problems run in groups. Just recently there was one that sounds exactly like your problem. See if this helps.

OE->View->Current View. Untick Group messages by conversation
Should have Show all messages checked off.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

certainly hope someone can assit, though it'll probably turn out that the answer was under my nose all the time.

i'm wanting to set up a group of email subsribers, but which to keep their email details private.

is it possible to set up an 'undisclosed recipients' email group in outlook 6? and if so, how? i've taken a look through the 'help' topics index, but don't seem to be able to find anthing related to my query.

The other day I realised I hadn't seen the Outlook Express 'compact messages' pop-up for some time. Sure enough, when I checked my recycle bin, the most recent bak files were at least 3 weeks old when I usually have to compact once a weekish. I did a manual compact and this worked ok. But, curious, I've been keeping an eye on the compact count check in the registry to see what happens when it reached the 100 mark. And it never reaches the 100 mark. The highest I've seen it is at 19, when suddenly it reverts to zero, seemingly of its own free will. Yesterday it was reading 5 and then when I checked an hour later expecting to see 7 or 8, it was reading 2! Needless to say, I don't touch anything in the registry, - just look.
I've been Googling this but I can't see any references to this particular behaviour anywhere. As I said, I can compact manually but I'd prefer not to have to. I am a bit worried that my OE might be corrupted. Any ideas anyone?

Just when you think you've heard everything, I must say that's a new one on me.

Compacting is Identity specific, so I would think the problem would be in your current Identity (of course a lot of people would look at your problem as a solution to out of control compacting ).
You could try creating a new Identity and see if it does the same thing.
If the compacting works properly in the new one, Import your mail from the old Identity.

Im not sure if this will completely take care of the problem listed by the OP, bu when i searched Google for "disable outlook in firefox" that thread was the first thing that popped up. I have found out how to change the mailto: action in firefox (3.5.7) to stop outlook from opening.

find "mailto" in content type column, and click the drop down box in the action column. There you can select from several mail clients including gmail.

This same procedure can be used to select which application opens most relivent file types.

When Outlook Express is opened, every e-mail that was sent "return reciept requested" causes Outlook Express to try to send a return receipt, which then fails resulting in an error message.

OE ignores all changes to the "return receipt" functions and continues to try to send them even before they are opened; when the mouse hovers over the particular e-mail.

A recent malware infection (which has been removed) caused a change in the registry and turned off Task Manager (which has been corrected). I suspect the problem with OE is also a registry issue, but cannot Google any information on this specific function or issue.

Two questions:

1. Is there a registry entry that controls the fuction of OE's "return receipt" function ?

2. If OE is uninstalled & reinstalled, will the stored e-mails be lost ?

An aggravating factor is that sbcglobal does not have a configuration setting to prevent duplicate e-mails from being downloaded and a recent change to the e-mail account by sbcglobal has resulted in the messages being duplicated 2 and 3 times in OE, and it is attempting to download another 4000 ( ! ) more, which will also all be duplicates.

This "return receipt" problem is preventing the ability to delete the duplicate & unwanted e-mails, so OE's functionality is reduced to nil.

Also, is there a static limit to the number of messages that OE can store & manage ?

ok, so I cleaned up all the old programs that I do not use any longer and deleted them from the control panel, add/remove programs, rebooted and about a day or so tried to open up outlook express. the program opened up but I can not "Expand" an email by double cliking it OR I can not even reply to an email as I get the attached screen shots of the error messages I recieve.

I did have this problem a while back but for the life of me I can not remember how it was corrected.

Hi, I just got a new laptop and I'm trying to export/import my address book from Outlook Express. When I import the addresses it only imports individual names and not "groups." It there a way to import groups as well? When I exported the address book from the old laptop I used the "text file (comma separated values)" option. Is this the right one to use?

No, it will not Export the Groups, you will need to recreate them.
The .csv file is the best backup, this format makes it available to Import to other programs.

As an alternative, you can make a copy of the .wab file and copy it over to the new computer.
To find the location of the original Address Book,
Open the Address Book in Outlook Express:
Tools > About Address Book
The directory will appear along with the name of the .wab file, which usually is the User Account name.wab

Navigate to that directory and copy the .wab file.
Copy the .wab file to the Desktop on the laptop,
find the location of the Address Book for Outlook Express,
Check this directory on the Laptop,
C:\Documents and Settings\User Account\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\User Account.wab
rename the .wab file to User Account.wab.old
Copy the backup .wab file to that directory and rename it to the same name as the current .wab file: User Account.wab

In Outlook Express, click the Address Book icon to open, the replaced Address Book should appear.

My operating system is Windows XP and my email program is Outlook Express. It's always worked fine, until about two weeks ago, when I try to delete mail in my Inbox, they don't delete. When I click the "delete" button, it appears to mash down like it's supposed to, but nothing happens. I tried going to the "" site to install their IE6 Service Pack, but got the message "Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this computer. Setup cannot continue." Any ideas?

I am getting ready to install windows 98 again on my new system, and I'd rather not have to re-enter all my email addresses into the address book. Anyone know how to save this file? I've checked out several files marked "address book," but none of them seem to store my addresses.

I am not postitive but i think they are saved in .WAB or .CVS files. With OE open you can go to files>export>address book and i think that it can be saved to a floppy. I tried it as a .cvs(comma separated values) and saved it to floppy which when opened looked like an Excel file. I tried the other option but had no option i could see to save it to a floppy and even though it said it was exported, i dont know where it went.

I have outlook express 6 for a email client, I was getting reminded to compact my email messages every one in a while so I said yes and let it compact my messages ... now I don't seel any email other than new email that has come in since I compacted the mail. Have you tried to see if there are any bak files in the Recycle Bin:

Make sure Outlook Express is not running.
Open the Recycle Bin on your Windows Desktop .
Locate the ".bak" files corresponding to the Outlook Express folders you want to recover.
The ".bak" file will be named like the folder in Outlook Express.
To restore a folder called "Archive", look for "Archive.bak", for example.
Click on the ".bak" file with the right mouse button.
Select Restore from the menu.
Locate the file in Windows explorer and open the folder it's contained in.
Drag and drop the ".dbx" file corresponding to the Outlook Express folder you want to recover to your Desktop.
In the Outlook Express store folder, click on the ".bak" file to be recovered with the right mouse button.
Select Rename from the menu.
Change the ".bak" file extension to ".dbx".
If the file was called "Archive.bak", for example, make sure it is named "Archive.dbx" now.
Open Outlook Express.
If your emails have been recovered, delete the ".dbx" file you moved to the Desktop.

Also if you do not find the files in the above location search your computer for *.Bak

Whenever I click on a link in an email in Outlook Express 6, a Program Not Found dialog box opens up, and says Windows cannot find dustingforfingerprints (which I believe is some sort of blog thing one of my kids has), and it also says This program is needed for opening files of type 'URL: http protocol'. Then it prompts me to enter the location of dustingfingerprints. I guess it thinks this is the program to enter weblinks?

I have started facing a strange problem recently. I re-installed windows 2000 and tried SP2 and ie6 updates but problem still persists.

On pressing key "L" anywhere, it launches outlook express as a side-effect. This is true even when some other application is open and in focus. The opened window shows inbox folder in place of default home screen of outlook express. I have noticed that in folders pane in outlook express, pressing L selects Local Folder and pressing it again selects Inbox. However, in this case the window with inbox is opened out of nowhere. I tried by deleting files from profile that may cause this (Like shortcuts) and also checked with a new user but in vain. One thing I have observed is that when I use on-screen keyboard, L key is working fine. This makes me think that it is not a shortcut recognized by explorer. I checked keyboard with other operating system in my dual-boot configuration and it is working fine there.

I am not able to work in windows 2000 because of this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Meaning that you created a new User Account and the L key still persists in starting Outlook Express?

It is definitely the On Screen Keyboard.

Ugh, tried to duplicate your problem and I was successful!
My keys affected were e, f, l, m, r
Outlook Express was not opened with the L key, it went to the Welcome Screen!

On the On Screen Keyboard, I clicked the key that looks kind of like a calculator, between the Win Key and the Ctrl key.
Right side of the Space bar.

I don't know if I am out of the woods yet.
Until the On Screen keyboard actually let me type in this window, I clicked that key about four times.

Last night a popup message from McAfee told me that Dell Security center was trying to access the internet. I was in the midst of downloading and reading email, and being a dummy, I gave one-time permission.

Soon afterward, I began to suspect a virus, as I received a virus notification popup and an email from my ISP re: a deleted virus. As I was deleting items from my inbox, Outlook Express froze. I tried restarting, and OE hangs on the inbox and hogs 96%+ system resources.

This morning, my ISP program showed an error and my Antivirus was corrupted. I did a system restore and redownloaded the antivirus, which solved my problem with getting on the 'net. I've scanned and come up with nothing and downloaded a special scan and remove tool (Stinger) from McAfee for the virus it warned me about yesterday....Sober, I think. But still, OE hangs up on the Inbox and I can't read or remove or access the toolbar. It says "no email selected."

Any ideas?

Running Outlook Express 6.0 on Windows 2000 all latest service packs and updates for both. Also installed is Outlook 2003.

Outlook is used for Office e-mail and can not be removed.

OE6 is used for personal e-mail accounts and News group access which is required for job support.

I have 2 e-mail accounts set up in OE6 and the "Leave a copy on server" checkbox is supposed to be checked all the time for both accounts. On average about once a month the box becomes unchecked on one or both accounts. This is a problem because quite often I will read and delete e-mails thinking that the e-mails will be retrieveable at home from the server. When I find that the e-mails are not on the server I can look back at the office and find that "leave a copy on server" check box is unchecked. I am the only one with access to my machine and those accounts. Has any one heard of this before? I was unable to come up with anything on the MS support knowledge base. and don't think that I should be charged $ to report a bug to Microsoft through their tech support.

I use the "Outlook Express" for my email for years, no problem.
I had been using ISP for my email server and have my own email account set up, so far so good.
I had checked the box "delete from mail server after deleting from trash" and it works out just good. This is because, no need to log-on the mail server each time to clean up the read emails by hand, this way could release enough space for receiving email. Is because the ISP charge on over-quota space for emails, or just will block excess emails over the allowed space.
The problem started, when a friend told me could set the email folder away from the hard-drive C, I set it as per his suggestion. Then, the "auto-cleaning function" stopped performing.
I asked the ISP and was told because "Outlook Express" is designed by Mircosoft Inc. so they could not help.
Then, I set it back to the "defaulted folder", but the function could not be recovered.
This is quite annoying that I have to log-on the email server and clean up the emails daily by hand.

Several times a day I get a message "Outlook Express. To free up disc space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes" which is preceeded by 10 minutes of my PC being very slow. I have 50% disc space free (37GB out of 74). I run Windows 97. I have defragmented my disc several times. I have used RegCure regularly and it has made no difference. At other times, I try to start Outlook Express and a message comes up saying it is already running, followed a little while later by the above error message. Any ideas, please?

Thank you in advance for your assistance. I am running XP on a vanilla PC, and have installed IE 7 and Outlook Express 6. I updated IE 7 just last night, to make sure that that is all in order.

All works except for one thing, and it's so frustrating! When I am in Outlook Express, with my Inbox populated by many messages, and I try to do a "Find Message" on that folder, all that happens is that I get a blank results window, regardless of what search criteria I select.

I searched the forum and found one relevant message from long ago, but the answer to that message is not helpful to me.

I've tried various antidotes. I could try to re-install Outlook Express, but doing so seems challenging. And I fear losing my Inbox messages altogether if I do that.

If you can give any advice, I'll appreciate that. In fact, I'm so desparate I'm willing to pay for some effective help.

Win XP Home Ed; Outlook Express 6.0. Have two identities. Yesterday one of the identities began to not allow moving unwanted messages to the Delete folder. Also could not move them to any other existing folder.

Each time try to delete or move or drag and drop get the following error message: "The selected message(s) could not be moved. An error has occurred."

Can delete emails by hitting the Shift-Delete keys but not desirable. Found that I can create a new folder and move or drag and drop to it and then delete the new folder but also not desirable.

Other identity functions normally.

Sounds like the inbox may be getting corrupted.

Move the messages you want to keep into a folder that is not a subfolder of the Inbox just in case something goes wrong or you have to end up deleting the inbox file.

Then make sure hidden files and file extensions are showing (My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View tab, check "Show hidden files and folders," uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files).

Then in Outlook Express in the identity having the problem, go to Tools>Options>Maintenance tab>Store Folder button. Once you know the exact location of the store folder that identity is using (there will be more than one with a long alphanumeric name so be sure you've got the exact name), close OE, navigate to it and delete the "folders.dbx" file. If that doesn't solve the problem, go back and delete the "inbox.dbx" file.

If you have to delete inbox.dbx, OE will open with a new, empty Inbox. Just move your saved messages back into it.

David Einstein, San Francisco Chronicle "computer guru" has stated that when one "deletes" e-mail FROM the Deleted Items Folder, that instead of being finally deleted they go to a hidden subfolder. This is why, he states, periodically Outlook Express will put up a query-box asking whether one would like "old messages" to be compressed to save space. Einstein says that what actually is being asked, is for permission to delete, deleted items, finally and forever from the hidden deleted items folder.

That Einstein's statement is correct, is implied by the fact that un-intentionally deleted items, from the deleted items folder, can easily be restored. That "restore" comes, naturally, from the hidden subfolder. query is: What is the directory and file-name of that hidden subfolder?

This isn't a hidden folder. It's called Deleted Items. If you can't see it, click on View on the top bar, then click layout. Make sure that Folder list is checked. Click apply then OK. You should now see the deleted items folder on the left.

In XP, all the OE mail foldders are stored as .dbx files. Do a file search for inbox.dbx. Mine is in
C:\Documents and Settings\[my name]\Application Data\Identities\{742DC712-BE9D-4EF7-BA65-C0041FC3121A}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx
Copy it somewhere - click on the copy to make sure it works.

I use Internet Explorer 7 and Outlook Express 6 to access my MSN email account. At times, when opening Outllook Express, it will not automatically search for my new messages. It says I am offline & asks me if I want to be online. I have to click on "Send/Receive Messages" to activate my search for new messages. If I restart my computer and then click on Outlook Express, it will automatically search my Inbox immediately, everytime. I went into options and I have the box checked that says "Send and Receive Messages at Startup". It seems Outlook Express isn't recognizing that I am always online. Any suggestions?

I messed up! Sometime back, I tried some stuff I shoulda left alone! It happened months ago, and I forget the details (yeah, I know, if I forget what I messed up, or how, then how can I ask for or expect any help!). Short version: MSIE v6, running under Windows XP home edition SP1 (yeah, yeah) no longer sees the existence of Outlook Express v6, which is still, indeed, fully installed on my puter. Trouble is, I can't go to Tools/Internet Options/Programs and choose OE as my default e-mail reader, which I've been using for years now, since MSIE doesn't know it's there!

I've tried removing and reinstalling OE, from the Control Panel. The "remove" option takes only a fraction of second and then ends. Hard for me to believe it's really removing anything. So if it didn't, then reinstalling won't do anything cuz the "install" process, starting from one of MS's online sources of the original program, would only detect that OE is still on my hard drive, and would stop immediately. Indeed, that's what seems to happen, when I try reinstalling OE after trying the "remove" option in Control Panel.

I haven't tried reinstalling MSIE v6. And I sure don't want to have to go all the way back to something like format c: and using Dell's CDs to start all over again!

Hi guys I work for an ISP and embarrassingly I am really stumped with this one. I have a customer using Outlook Express every he try's to compose an email OE try's to force him to create a contact and its annoying him. Every time he clicks send it comes up "no matches found" he is using XP I did a google search but only found information regarding this issue related to 98 and 95 none of the resolutions applied to XP.

Sadly my XP machine is out of action at the moment and I cant tinker with it, your help is much appreciated.


After 4 years with no answer, I hope this helps someone else and saves the obligatory 1/2 hour searching dead posts with no helpful solution (in 2 minutes flat).

HERE'S HOW TO 'FIX' THE 'NO ADDRESS FOUND' ERROR: (1.) Open Address book and simply double click on the faulty contact entry. (2.) The 'Properties' window should pop up, now click on 'name' tab and add a dash after the 'last' name field entry. The 'display' field should reflect the additional dash after the name. (3.) Now click 'OK' to save changes then close the address book. (4.) Now create a new message and begin typing the contact name which should auto-fill the name showing a dash after name. Hello Friends,

I use outlook express 6 for checking my emails.

I am not able to view any attachment sent to my email. Whenever I open a mail containing an attachment I get the following message

" OE removed access to the unsafe attachments in your mail: filename "

Though I am able to see the text in the message. But I am not getting the attachment file. All the emails having attachment show the same above message. I am attaching a screeshot of the error.

Please help me in rectifying the error.

Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP Home SP 3 messages have a "From" header, and there my email address is displayed. Due to this, it often happens that my just sent emails come straight back to ME! Is there a way to remove this "From" header, or is it there by default?

Does anyone know what it means when messages in the Sent Mail folder in Outlook Express have a header line "This message is being Watched"? This appears in a beige bar above the "From" line in the email. All my emails prior to 12/2/01 show this message, and none after that date show it -- and of course the Microsoft help site provided absolutely no information.

I have recently changed ISP to and I have set up outlook express to recieve my emails. I have gone thru' the internet wizard and set up my account on the "servers" box as my incoming mail (POP3) as The default setting was "".

I then click on "apply" and I think fine & dandy. But no, within about an hour the default setting "" has reared its ugly head again and thus my emails dont come thru'. What can I do to rectify this? Is it an ISP problem? Is it a Dell Computer problem? Or is it a Windows XP problem?

I'm get this error ("msoe.dll could not be loaded") when I try to start it. Does anyone have an idea about why this would happen? The dll does exist in the dir.

For the second time in recent months I have had a problem with lost messages. On Friday night when I attempted to shut down my PC, suddenly I received an onscreen message box indicating that my messages were being "compacted." I have Win XP Pro, Service Pack 2 and use Outlook Express.

Someone told me that Win XP Pro with SP 2 automaticallly gives a prompt after 100 closings of OE, asking if you want to compact your messages. The strange thing is that both times I've had this problem, I was never given a prompt. In other words, the compacting started on its own, which was completely unexpected. First I lost my Inbox messages; next, I lost my Sent Items. Is this normal? Is this an issue only with OE? If so, maybe I should change to another e-mail program.

In the past I used both Macallan and DBXtract in an attempt to retrieve my lost messages, but had not success with either program. Someone had given me instructions for these programs, but I had trouble following them. Still, I'm not sure if either of them would help retrieve my messages.

I'm wondering if what I'm experiencing is really "normal" or if it may perhaps be the result of a virus problem I had recently. I am totally confused by what is happening, and I have no clue yet as to how to either prevent or avoid it.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help.

Hello all,

Recently, I have noticed that for most messages received, there is a paperclip icon in the Inbox which would indicate that there is an attachment to the message.

When I open the message, there are no attachments.

All I have done recently is uninstall Nortons Internet Security and install AVG Free antivirus and Windows defender. I had also installed and uninstalled Zone Alarm and Ewido Antispyware before finishing up with my AVG and Defender configuration.

Any help or explanation as to why this is happening would be appreciated.

I am using Windows XP Pro. I am very confused why some of my e-mail files in the store folder are stored as "bak" and others as " dbx" files?I have read a lot of info/questions on converting them and restoring them ,but why are they different?
I would like to reduce the file sizes to avoid bloating errors as advised to stay below 100Mb per folder. Some e-mails cannot be moved to a folder from the inbox due to "some error occurring"? What is meant by "creating my own user defined folders for storing mail,& move my mail to them"?Is this to occur in the "Store Folder" or simply under the default Folders(eg inbox,sent items etc?),so I end up with a number of folders for the same contents ,but each with less than 100MB?Hoping for some sense on this please,cheers,bukti.

I added some apps from the Store to my initial Owner/Admin account on Win 8.1. Today, I wanted to have them show on the account that will be used for everyday non-admin stuff. I logged into Microsoft with this account and attempted to add them to show on this account (after temporarily promoting account to Admin). Store said it was "already installed." So....I logged back into initial owner/admin account, and used the "uninstall" (not just unpin) option on the bottom of the Start Screen, thinking that I couldn't have them on two accounts so I'll get rid of them on one account. But...when I went back to install the apps on the new account from the Store, I get the same message. I looked for the apps via Control Panel, but nothing shows.

How can I get these apps to install/reinstall when they think they're already there? Are they on my machine where I can actually see/remove/use them? Where are they hiding? I'm stumped.

Does anyone know if its possible to autofill the "from field" as a rule, when your in "another users /delegates" mailbox, so you dont have to add their address in the "from field"? (so it will autopopulate with their email address (and show "on behalf of")?
I hope this was clear.

No ... its not possible if the user has more than one delegate (that has added them with the applicable rule). from that point on, they will have to choose which person they want to add to "sent" on behalf of field.

However, If they have just one (one only) user who has added them with that permission (to send on behalf of), it will auto-populate with that user.

So, It does not matter even if they are "in" a specific users mailbox (and expect the "on behalf of" to auto fill with that users name). If they have more than one delegate that has added them with that permission, they will still have to choose which user the message will sent "on behalf of"

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

I am having problems with outlook express 6, it is taking about 1 1/2-2 mins to execute. This seems to be connected to a problem I have with WinMX. Everything was woking fine with my system until one day when I tried to run Winmx i got an error message saying something like "Winmx has failed to execute please reinstall and if this problem persists check your computer for Viruses" on the same day Outlook decided to slow down. I was about to do a hard drive format and clean install anyway so after installing everything again Winmx and Outlook worked perfectly...but only once where after it went back to the same problem.I have since done a second format and it is definately only after i install Winmx that i get the problem. The version of winmx i have used has been different on each occasion.
Any ideas???? I dont want to have to live without either program but if i had to make a sacrifice i would keep Outlook.

Hi. I'm new to this forum, and am hoping someone could help.

I have downgraded to XP from Vista and want to go back to using Outlook Express.

I was able to migrate my mail and contacts TO Windows Mail when I moved to a Vista PC, but now when I want to move back to XP, I have no idea how to get my mail and contact data back into Outlook Express...even if that means migrating to a third party platform like Thunderbird first (Windows mail on vista >> Thunderbird or other mail client >> Outlook Express on XP)

I recently started having a very strange problem w/my outlook express (v6). I have 2 identities and it is only affecting one of these identities, the other identity is problem-free.

Here is the problem:

When I send an email, the send/receive box that pops up tells me that i have an error ("Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks, etc"). However, the area under the "errors" tab is blank. The message which I was trying to send then remains in the outbox. The message is then resent whenever Outlook sends/receives mail. I have to move the item from the Outbox to "Deleted Items" or "Drafts" to stop outlook from constantly resending the message. I cannot move the message to "sent items," if i try to do so it tells me that an error has occurred.

Does anyone have any idea why it would start doing this?

To make matters more confusing, the problem first started only w/messages that had attachments, then every message, and yesterday, 3 or 4 messages actually didn't have this problem ( i send dozens to hundreds of messages a day), but now it's happening to every message again.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Keep your Inbox empty!
Move messages you want to keep to folders of your own creation in Outlook Express.

Outlook Express is probably due for some maintenance.
Close all windows.
Open Outlook Express
File > Work Offline
Click on the Local Folders folder
File > Folder > Compact All Folders
Walk away from the computer until the process is complete.
Avoid starting this process if the possibility of a power outage is imminent such as a thunderstorm in progress.

Should the compaction process ever be interrupted, restart it before accessing any folders and allow it to finish.
Send yourself a Test message to see if there are still problems.

If the messages are still stuck in the Outbox:

Enable Show Hidden Files and folders

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the check mark for Hide Extensions for known file types.

Move any messages you want to save, out of the Outbox folders, check both Identities.
Close Outlook Express.


Start > Search > For Files or Folders > All files and folders,
In the field for: all or part of the file name
Key in:
Below that, click on More advanced options
in the field: Type of File, select (All Files and Folders)
place a checkmark in:
Search system folders
Search hidden files and folders

A friend is using OE with XP (Home) - SP3 installed. Also uses AVG.

She normally leaves her computer on continuously, but does periodically reboot it.

Recently, after being on for much of the day where she has used OE a time or two, OE will hang. Clicking on the shortcut or going to the program file and trying to open the application results in not activity. Checking the Task Manager shows that OE is not a running application.

Once in a while, a window appears saying, "An Unknown Error has occured".

The only way to resolve the problem so far is to reboot the computer, which is a bit aggrevating.

Any suggestions?

Outlook Express v6 running under Win XP SP2.

Having clicked on File | Export | Messages , I get a message saying "This will export messages from Outlook Express to Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange".

I clicked on OK and that's it. Nothing.

If I click File | Export | Address Book , I am then invited to name a file to which the address book should be exported.

Can anyone explain what is happening with export messages?

In Outlook Express, under Tools, there is a category "Synchronize All". Often times, I find it necessary to click on "Synchronize All" to get "all" of my Outlook Express e-mail. What comes down --sometimes-- in Outlook Express is not "all" of my e-mail. I know this because I am using Mailwasher Pro and it shows additional mail prior to downloading to Outlook Express. So I click on "Synchronize All" in Outlook Express and the balance of the mail appears. I have only one mail account. So I don'tunderstand. Perhaps someone in this forum can speak to this ... and clarify exactly what "Synchronize All" means.

Today, 25 Aug 2016, my Windows 10 PC loaded Outlook 2013 and at the same time I received the following message:

Thinking the message to be genuine, a file was downloaded called OneDriveSetup.exe which was some 8Mb in size.
Is or was this update genuine?

I have since deleted the file as a precaution. Checking this further, I find that in folder:
C:\Users\Mr Morgan\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\Update
There are two new files called:
OneDriveUpdate.exe which is 20Mb and the other is an .xml file called update.xml.

I just completed some Windows Updates, and since that time, Outlook 2007 is not working properly. I can no longer receive email from my gmail account. I looked in the Account Settings and noticed that the "Account Type" pull-down menu is grayed out. Any ideas on how to fix this???

Hello there,

Outlook 2007 Imap account can't get the new items synced in to its "Inbox" folder. Other imap folders are up to date. The problem is only with Inbox.

The newly arrived items on webmail's inbox are not appeared in my outlook's inbox. When I move it to any other folder on webmail, then it reflects in outlook. (I mean its only outlook's inbox that stopped syncing, while all other subscribed folders do)

The 'updating cached messages' task shows the count as per webmail's inbox count, but it wont actually update all of them. For eg, there are 1500 items in webmail's inbox & outlook's inbox has got just 1000, the task while running shows as 'updating cached messages x/1500' and once the count reaches 1000/1500, it ends.

When an item is deleted from outlook's inbox, it reflects on webmail & similarly when deleted on webmail, its deleted on outlook's inbox as well. The only thing is outlook inbox, which no longer receives new mail.

Have spent ample of time to identify the issue but no luck yet. There are 100+ systems in the network with same setup and this issue is observed in about 8-10 pcs as of now. When the account is reconfigured there is no issue. So the problem is linked to outlook profile or pst which we couldnt figure out & find a fix.

System Spec:
XP SP3 on core2duo with 4GB of Ram, Office 2007 Standard, Symantec Endpoint Protection.

Have anybody experienced this?

Outlook 2003:I'm a massive fan of outlooks Search folders, I receive in excess of 400 emails per day, of which approximately 250 need my attention, even if to reply back and give someone an answer.

A problem I find is that I am so busy with my emails, I often need to clean out my inbox. I do this by setting up basic search folders such as "all emails from my team which are in my inbox only" or "any email sent to me which was part of a distribution list in my inbox only" etc...

This is great for filtering my mail and I would like to create a rule as such:

"All mail within my inbox which has been either replied to forwarded by myself".

I can't seem to find any options and I'm hoping an Outlook guru can help

If you don't know the answer, can you try googling it for me to see if you can find anything, loads of heads are better one...

When trying to update with Windows update, i get a spontaneous reboot or a bluescreen-crash.
The filename "lzx32.sys" is mentioned.

The updates i'm trying to install are the following (roughly translated from norwegian):
"Update for Windows Media Format 11 SDK for Windows XP (KB939399)"
"Windows Tool for removal of dangerous software - march 2007 (KB890830)"
Other than that, i believe i have all other windows-updates.

I do however recall there beeing a third update on the list when i started the installation for the first time.
After the third or forth spontanous restart/bluscreen, when i figured something was wrong, it has disappeared from the list.
I do not know if it actually got installed or not.

I've been following the 5-steps-before-posting as good as possible.
From my normal startup programs msn-messenger and daemon-tools were shutted down before the dss-scan.
Here are the three logs (panda-activescan, dss-main and dss-extra attached):
PS: note that the "extra.txt" is from the first scan, which was done abit earlier than my last scan where the pasted "main.txt" is from.

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm using Outlook 2003. I'm designing a new Contacts screen, which better suits the needs of my business.

I have been able to figure out how to everything except for this:

How to I design the "date" and "dollar amount" field values to default to blank/empty instead of defaulting to the word "None" in the case of the "date" field and "$0.00" in the case of the "dollar amount" field?

So I have this weird thing happening in my relatively fresh install of Windows 10.
Whenever I search for "Check for Updates" or "Windows Update settings" on the search box of the start menu, I get the results that I want but if I press enter or try to click on those results nothing happens.. As far as I know I can click all others search results but those, and maybe others related to windows update.

I can still get updates by going to Settings>Update & Security though.

In my other computers this works fine, and as far as I can tell all the updates are done.
From what I've searched around other people seemed to have a similar issue where they couldn't acess the settings at all which isn't my case. Still I tried the sfc/ scannow that a lot of users seemed to recommend but no results.

I just migrated to a new hard drive and did a clean install of Win7 (did not have SP1 on the DVD).

During the Updating process, windows stopped working and I received an error, something about running Update again, etc. So I rebooted and finished the Upgrading further problems noted.

However, I view the "Installed Updates" and see that KB2604114 and about 20 other updates "FAILED." But when I view the "Update History," it lists KB2604114 and the others as "installed."

I'm confused. Are the updates I'm referring to "FAILED" or are they properly installed?

In your description, you might have switched the observations.

"History" is a log that tracks attempts at installing specific updates. One user might have multiple failed attempts for a particular update; or multiple successful attempts if one was looking for a source of a problem.

"Installed updates" records the last successful installation of a specific update; no timestamp, just the date.

My organisation has just rolled out an Exchange 2007 Server.
I am a desktop support engineer for my unit. We are setting up access to the server through Outlook 2003.

A small number of Outlook 2003 users get this error message when they are using a .prf file to configure their clients.

"Your Exchange Server administrator has blocked the version of Outlook that you are using. Contact your administrator for assistance."

This is XP SP2 running Outlook 2003 (error occurs on Office, Office SP2 and Office SP3) connecting to Exchange 2007.

I have tried tried applying SP2 and SP3 to Office and completely reinstalling Office but it still occurs.

I am told by the Server Administrators that this is a local problem so I am not getting any help from them. I tend to believe them that it's not server side because I set one of the profiles up on two PCs next to eachother. On one it worked fine but on the other it had this error message. I could not see a difference in the two Outlook installations.
I have read this article here but a lot of the questions it asks and tests involve having administrator access over the server which I do not have.

Does anyone know of anything in the local Office installation that I do have control over that has been known to cause this?

A:Solved: Outlook 2003/Exchange 2007 - "Your Version of Outlook has been blocked..."

Hi we managed to find the solution so I'm posting it here to help others.

We inherited a number of builds that were done by other companies. It appears these builds have in the past had previous versions of Office installed. This has resulted in registry keys lurking around from the old installs.

Once we removed these registry entries it worked.

Best way to do this that I could think of is to

1) Uninstall Office and then search the registry for any references to Outlook. You can do this using AML Free Registry Cleaner (which has a search function). Ignore any hits for Outlook Express you are only insterested in Office Outlook.

2) If this is the problem that you are having then you will find registry entries in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office\7.0 or 8.0 or 9.0 etc.

3) Delete any Outlook folders in the above tree. Onc eof the keys in the Outlook folder will be Version and this appears to be what is being read when the server asks what version you have.

4) Reinstall Office - it should now work.

Here's the problem:

I want to create a new folder for old email I've already sent.
The problem is new folders (even if they are sub-folders in the "sent" box) do not show the "To" header, they take on the characteristics of the "in" box and show the "From" header.

Anyone know how to create a new folder that responds like the "sent" box?

And one last question while we're at it.
I have recently moved to XP after years of Windows 98 and ME (that's why I want to separate the old email I sent from the new stuff).
In ME the Outlook Express folders were in something called "application data" buried somewhere deep in the operating system, where is it in XP?

Right click on any of those (from, subject, received, etc) - then choose columns. There you can have any items you want showing.

As to XP and DBX files....they are hidden. Go to Folder Options->View and click Show all files. Folder Options can be found in Start->Settings or Windows Explorer.

To anyone that can help me out:

I purchased a windows anytime upgrade key and upgraded my system from windows 7 home premiuim to windows 7 ultimate now when my windows tries to update I get this: (See image titled "message")

To bring you up to speed as to what I've done so far:
I ran sfc\scannow and no errors were found
I downloaded the hotfixes and apllied them and still could not update
I tried to do a system restore to the point before I upgraded, but I could not perform one because all of my previous attempts to update windows automatically creates a system restore and all the restore points were within a 24 hour period
I installed a system update readiness tool as per "windows help and support" dialogue box

To see the updates that did not install, refer to the image titled "update"

Really, I feel like I've done my homework and I've exhausted my efforts as to how to fix this problem. I'm currently going to school for computers and so I really like to apply what I learn in real world situations, but this one has got me stumped!

I'm also attaching my checksur.log I don't understand it now and it looks like a foreign language to me, but as I progress through my information systems degree I hope one day I can become a techsupport forum partner.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Hello guys,

I don't know what I did, but nothing happens when I click on those two things in the search bar:

I reinstalled Windows a few hours ago, and IIRC pressing those with the mouse lead somewhere. Now when I click on them, it does nothing. I have to type in "Settings", so I can click on the actual Windows App. Then I can navigate to those settings. IIRC those results were "clickable".

I'm not sure what this is in Windows Update [and this seems to be greyed out itself too], but how is it possible to have no results in Google on this KB that's in Windows Update?

I also clicked on the "more information" for the Microsoft Knowledge Base, but nothing came up there either.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

I've just uninstalled Adobe Acrobat Reader DC on the suspicion that it was causing an operating system problem on my PC, that Adobe Reader DC was behaving as malware.

When I was uninstalling Acrobat Reader DC I think the date of installation was 14th January 2016 - some 9 days or so ago.

The symptoms were that the "house icon" Start text-style menu was not popping up as it should. This meant that I could not access any functions through the start menu or even shut down my PC as normal.

I could still access the pseudo-touch button start menu and via that I was able to access the PC Settings - Update and recovery and I was seriously considering a "Refresh your PC without accessing your files" involving removing dozens of applications and a lot of work to get my PC working again, but that would have been a panic measure so I investigated deeper.

Express Gate's "enter os" is not functioning. It does not display the # of seconds, counting down. The button appears, with a white rectangle in the center. If I click on the "enter OS" button, or press the "esc" key, booting continues.

I have run the Express Gate updater.

I have disabled Express Gate.

I have selected "1 second"; "5 seconds", "30 seconds".

I have waited multiple minutes, with Express Gate enabled.

I hope you can assist me.

I built the computer last week, but the ethernet port failed, so I returned that M3N HT Deluxe / HDMI for the current motherboard. On that motherboard, the "enter OS" feature functioned.

I loaded the defaults from the bios.

I cleared the CMOS.

I have found other instances of this problem, but no solution in my search. Hopefully, you have the solution.

Same CPU, ram, HDDs [ SATA2 ], optical drives, add in cards, power supply as 2 weeks ago. No overclocking of CPU, GPU, ram.

I obtained the latest Express Gate file using Express Gate updater. EGU informed me that the file I was downloading was older than the file I had used to update EG. Reboot, the countdown timer worked. Reboot; countdown timer failed and the computer is waiting for me, displaying the Express Gate GUI.

The issue has become intermittent, which is consistent with other users who have posted this problem.

When ever i try to use my webcam (logitech quickcam express)

Microsoft Updater says I have a critical update (KB2286198) to install but it fails and gives the message: "WindowsUpdate_80246007" "WindowsUpdate_dt000".

I've tried a couple of things that MS Support suggests but they don't work and don't seem to really apply to this particular error message. Searching for the error code 80246007 hasn't yielded anything yet that works.

Groan, I downloaded a flight sim demo, didn't like it and tried to uninstall it but a message came up saying something about "uninstaller failed to initialize or is corrupted, program cannot be uninstalled".
Same message comes up regardless of whether I hit the in-program uninstall button, or the WinXPHome Add/Remove progs routine.
So thats 100Mb of useless stuff sitting on my hard drive that can't be got rid of, and I'm already short of HD space too, groan again..

I removed (?) all the bloatware and software I did not wanted to use that came with my Toshiba laptop! Ex: McAfee, Nero, etc...I removed via Control Panel/Uninstall programs! But I know that almost all the time, there are still "bits" of those sw that remain in the computer! My question: how can I remove all those "bits"?
For example I saw that somewhere in the Registry (via regedit) there was (still) some McAfee and Nero folders!!! Is it safe to delete those?

I bought a computer which has Vista preinstalled, I uninstalled it (not sure if I did but I installed XP using a CD) and installed XP but now I want Vista back but I have no idea how to do it. I don't have a Vista CD.
On XP I went on My Computer>System (C: )>x86 then at the x86 file I saw a Windows Vista setup program. I then installed that. But it's not the way I had it. All my files are gone, my anti-virus was gone and I had 30days to buy a productkey! I shouldn't get that because I had Vista preinstalled.
Anyway, when I go to My Computer>System (C: )>Windows.old.000>Program etc. all my old programs were there and my old files, my original ones. Does that mean that the "original Vista" is still there? Can I recover my Vista etc.?
Please someone help me. I'm not a computer-person so please be patient when explaining things.​

My father had an agreement with a retailer whereby if something went wrong with his printer he could just take it back and get a like for like replacement. This worked well until HP stopped making printers or perhaps just his printer. Either way the retailer instead gave him a kodak.

In my efforts to be helpful I uninstalled the HP software using add/remove programs and went about installing the kodak disk.

When I next restarted the computer and ever since a popup appears called Rundll and declares

Error loading C:\Program Files\HP\HP Photosmart 5510 Series\bin\HPStatusBL.dll

the specified module could not be found.

My father is convinced that reformatting the computer and starting over will resolve this problem. While that may well 'fix' the problem I'm trying to convince him that he need not do something so drastic.

I tried CCleaner's registry cleaner but it did not get rid of the popup.

I tried reinstalling the HP software... that did not end well.

I rapidly ran out of time and had to leave without fixing the problem. And have unfortunately lost the error message(s) the HP installer spat out. It did not have any effect on the popup.

The new kodak printer works well but every time he starts the computer the rundll error box popus up. We would really like to be rid of it.

I have installed Outlook (which looks more like OE than Live mail, perhaps) and started using it. I am fairly happy. The only thing that bugs me is that it starts up with two windows and two tabs, one of which is the calendar functionality. I can close that down again but it is a pain. Is there a way of executing Outlook so that only Inbox appears? I want to disable the calendar completely and never see it again.

I use an online, cloud computing, calendar since I have many computers and waiting for calendars to synchronise is something I can do without.

Another question/puzzle. Windows 8.1 Enterprise.

I clean installed W8.1 three days ago, and the first thing I did was bring it up to date with all the offered updates. All installed successfully and I thought no more of it. At some point after this I made a system image backup, which today I have restored to. When I now look at the "classic" windows update screen it says I have never checked for updates and none are installed. Forcing a check for updates brings only two up as can be seen in the pictures. If I go to "view installed updates" then there is a lot of stuff in there, whih I assume could be the previously installed original batch.
I'm guessing this is normal behaviour but it seems slightly odd (the on screen messages at least)

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. I have recently created an additional email address in Outlook 2010 and since then have been intermittently getting a pop-up window as soon as I start Outlook 2010 which prevents me doing anything and places a red X on the email icon in the bottom task bar.

The pop-up window says "Your IMAP server closed the connection" and gives me "OK" and "Details" tabs.

If I click OK it gives me the "No - you can't do that" tone. If I click Details I get;

Account: (email address)

Internal login failure. Refer to server log for more information.
Protocol: IMAP
Port: 143
Error Code: 0x800CCCDD

I then can't do anything to exit from the pop-up window or Outlook 2010 except to use Task Manager to stop OUTLOOK.EXE*32.

Any ideas on how I can prevent this from occurring?

I'm running Windows 7 64 bit and have only basic computer skills.

I have Googled till I'm blue in the face. Looked at a thread here and changed registry settings but still cannot seem to change the default save as folder in Outlook 2007 on an XP system.

I want to change the default "My Documents" folder to an external hard drive. How can this be done?

I cannot make my outlook 2003 program my default for responding to a mailto: link on a web page using firefox. Every time I click onto such a link on any web page, it opens with my gmail. If I use internet explorer, It opens with outlook 2003.

I have set all my option settings in outlook and firefox for outlook 2003 to be my default program for email. Is there anyway I can make outlook to handle these mailto: links on webpages in firefox? I don't think I missed any settings. Thanks in advance.

I'm using Outlook 2003 and have multiple email accounts. I just switched the default email account. However, when I send someone an email it says it is from the old default email address. I've looked at the properties of my new default account and no where in there does it mention this older email account. Outlook clearly is showing that the email is going out on my new default email account but the reply to email or the from portion is from another email account. Any suggestions?
