Q: Outlook Express 6 "Search Message" Fails

Hello tech helper(s),

Thank you in advance for your assistance. I am running XP on a vanilla PC, and have installed IE 7 and Outlook Express 6. I updated IE 7 just last night, to make sure that that is all in order.

All works except for one thing, and it's so frustrating! When I am in Outlook Express, with my Inbox populated by many messages, and I try to do a "Find Message" on that folder, all that happens is that I get a blank results window, regardless of what search criteria I select.

I searched the forum and found one relevant message from long ago, but the answer to that message is not helpful to me.

I've tried various antidotes. I could try to re-install Outlook Express, but doing so seems challenging. And I fear losing my Inbox messages altogether if I do that.

If you can give any advice, I'll appreciate that. In fact, I'm so desparate I'm willing to pay for some effective help.

ok, so I cleaned up all the old programs that I do not use any longer and deleted them from the control panel, add/remove programs, rebooted and about a day or so tried to open up outlook express. the program opened up but I can not "Expand" an email by double cliking it OR I can not even reply to an email as I get the attached screen shots of the error messages I recieve.

I did have this problem a while back but for the life of me I can not remember how it was corrected.

IF ANYONE HAD EVER ENCOUNTERED THE FOLLOWING SITUATION, PLEASE GIVE ME A HAND. WILL APPRECIATE.

I use the "Outlook Express" for my email for years, no problem.
I had been using ISP for my email server and have my own email account set up, so far so good.
I had checked the box "delete from mail server after deleting from trash" and it works out just good. This is because, no need to log-on the mail server each time to clean up the read emails by hand, this way could release enough space for receiving email. Is because the ISP charge on over-quota space for emails, or just will block excess emails over the allowed space.
The problem started, when a friend told me could set the email folder away from the hard-drive C, I set it as per his suggestion. Then, the "auto-cleaning function" stopped performing.
I asked the ISP and was told because "Outlook Express" is designed by Mircosoft Inc. so they could not help.
Then, I set it back to the "defaulted folder", but the function could not be recovered.
This is quite annoying that I have to log-on the email server and clean up the emails daily by hand.

Hello: I have this problem quite often when downloading my email through Outlook Express. It always occurs at the start of the day, never during the day, although I do “Send/Receive” dozens of times a day.

My email appears to download normally, but then I get this error message:
<<Message number 1 could not be retrieved. Account: 'pop3.phonecoop.coop', Server: 'pop3.phonecoop.coop', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Can't open the message file - it's gone!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800420CD>>>

Sometimes this message is followed by several more, beginning “Message number 2 could not be retrieved ...” and so on.

I know for sure of at least two recent emails which have been sent but which I’ve never received. Could this be why?

I have three questions:
1. What is this and can I fix it?
2. Can I stop it happening again?
3. Are the emails which couldn't be retrieved lost forever? Or is there any way I can read them, or at least find out who they came from, so I can ask for them to be re-sent?

(Actually, that’s about five questions, but what am I - a statistician?)

Outlook Express 6 on Windows XP Home SP 3 messages have a "From" header, and there my email address is displayed. Due to this, it often happens that my just sent emails come straight back to ME! Is there a way to remove this "From" header, or is it there by default?
Help please anyone?

Does anyone know what it means when messages in the Sent Mail folder in Outlook Express have a header line "This message is being Watched"? This appears in a beige bar above the "From" line in the email. All my emails prior to 12/2/01 show this message, and none after that date show it -- and of course the Microsoft help site provided absolutely no information.

Outlook 2003:I'm a massive fan of outlooks Search folders, I receive in excess of 400 emails per day, of which approximately 250 need my attention, even if to reply back and give someone an answer.

A problem I find is that I am so busy with my emails, I often need to clean out my inbox. I do this by setting up basic search folders such as "all emails from my team which are in my inbox only" or "any email sent to me which was part of a distribution list in my inbox only" etc...

This is great for filtering my mail and I would like to create a rule as such:

"All mail within my inbox which has been either replied to forwarded by myself".

I can't seem to find any options and I'm hoping an Outlook guru can help

If you don't know the answer, can you try googling it for me to see if you can find anything, loads of heads are better one...

Hi there!
First of all thanks for the great toturial and the forum.

I tried to do the in-place upgrade from Windows 10 (build 1607) in order to "repair" my system (there are some quirks I want to get rid off) using a freshly created USB (as per description), but it fails with the message "make sure that there is enough disk space available in your PC" (rough translation from german; see attached screenshot) without any further information.

It then automatically cycles back to the question on how to install (i.e. with keeping data and apps or without) and then back into the above mentioned error message.


This is what I already tried or made sure of prerequisites needed:
I have made sure that there is definitely enough disk space available.My C: partition (where windows resides on) is 106 GB large and has currently over 58 GB of free space available.The system partition that is supposed to be 350 MB is still 350 MB (I read something about this potentially being reduced to 100 MB by other tools ...).I have deinstalled the Kaspersky anti virus tool (reinstalled it now after several tries with no success).I have disabled (i.e. fully decrypted) the disk encryption bitlocker on all disks.

My partitions (as seen from "Mini Tool Partition Wizard" and "Disk Manager"):
Do you have any ideas on what else could be wrong?

Have you tried to mount the ISO in File Explore, instead if using an USB stick?
I just download the current ISO here: Windows 10 ISO , mount it in File Explorer and run the setup.exe.

I finally managed to get my laptop running on Windows 10. All was fine. But then the Windows Upgrade assistant informed me that I'm on an outdated version of Windows 10 and that I should update. Apparently it is pretty massive, so it's treated like an "upgrade".

Well... after 45 minutes of all this "progress" and work, the process simply FAILED. Windows was successful at "restoring the previous version." OK... but... after this, NO INDICATION of what went wrong. Launching the Windows Assistant for updating is all enthusiastic about helping me "update to the latest and most secure version of Windows 10"... with nary a clue that the previous attempt failed.

I'm AGHAST at how incompetent Microsoft has become. This is the absolutely most terrible O/S upgrade experience I've ever had, going from 8.1 to 10 and now 10+. It's atrocious to see so many "hoops" that need to be leaped through without Microsoft taking the initiative to make this process an efficient and productive one. I absolutely CANNOT IMAGINE how anyone who is a novice or with "general" Windows experience could manage this, without resorting to hundreds of dollars in support fees. It's disgusting.

Nevertheless... painful as it is, I'm on Windows 10 and would like to be "more secure" with the latest. Any clue as to what I can do to find out what CHOKED Microsoft on this and how to get over it?

I double-click and get "search" instead of "open"--only when I click a disk, like Hard Drive C: or Floppy A: or CD F: and so on.

It didn't used to do this, so I must've inadvertently changed some setting somewhere, but darned if I can find it now.

Any ideas?

I've tried frequently documented solution regarding FsDepends where
changing the start reg key from a value of 3 to 0.... doesn't work as this is a common symptom to a different problem.

When using partdisk or the disk management gui I get the error message: "A virtual disk support provider for the specified file was not found"
eg partdisk select vdisk file=c:\my.vdh
There are some statements that some Intel Management Control Software might be knobbing this feature... does anybody know what this installation is doing so that the process can be reversed?
Any other suggestions?

For some strange reason (aren't all of these computer problems strange?), every time I click on the "Send/Receive" button in Outlook 2002 I get a pop-up box that says "Operation failed". My email will send and receive on it's programmed time schedule, but not if I click on the button manually.

This just started yesterday as far as I know.

I've rebooted, run Spybot, Ad-Aware SE, AVG, and no problems show up.

Any ideas?

Purchased a copy of office 2003 (downloaded from the internet complete with serial number) - loaded over the top of an office 2000 program - loaded no bother - now I am unable to access Outlook Express and get the message "The address book failed to load. Outlook express is incorrectly configured, please reinstall". When I attempt to open emails I get a message "There was an error opening this message. An error has occurred". My operating system is Windows XP with the latest patch. Any assistance in resolving this would be much appreciated

Found a solution - not the quickest but it worked - uninstalled Office 2003 and reinstalled XP over the top as per Microsoft article ID 315341 - the real time waste was having to reinstall all the XP patches

Hello,

I've scanned my laptop with SFC four times in this past week, and each scan ended with the same failure to repair specific files. I'm uncertain how to proceed with these corrupted files.

I followed the instructions in the SFC /SCANNOW tutorial; I installed the System Update Readiness Tool (CheckSUR in attachments) after running SFC three times and it managed to find and fix some sort of error. However, the results seem to be the same in the new SFC scan logs.

I also tried obtaining a .iso of Windows 7 home premium from Microsoft's website (Access Denied) to run a repair install, but it will not accept my product key due to it being a pre-installation provided by Samsung.

I do not have a Windows 7 installation disc so I cannot manually replace them like the tutorial suggests.
Also, I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I ran the WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab troubleshooter several times as well (dism.txt is in attachments). Every single time it says that two problems were found:
1. Problems installing recent updates (Not fixed)
2. Service registration is missing or corrupt (Fixed)

Additionally, I've recently noticed that my free hard drive space has been decreasing rapidly. In the past two days, it has decreased by 2 or 3 GB, despite not downloading or installing anything. Is this related to my current problem with the corrupted files or something else? I don't know how to find what's eating up my storage space.

The other day I realised I hadn't seen the Outlook Express 'compact messages' pop-up for some time. Sure enough, when I checked my recycle bin, the most recent bak files were at least 3 weeks old when I usually have to compact once a weekish. I did a manual compact and this worked ok. But, curious, I've been keeping an eye on the compact count check in the registry to see what happens when it reached the 100 mark. And it never reaches the 100 mark. The highest I've seen it is at 19, when suddenly it reverts to zero, seemingly of its own free will. Yesterday it was reading 5 and then when I checked an hour later expecting to see 7 or 8, it was reading 2! Needless to say, I don't touch anything in the registry, - just look.
I've been Googling this but I can't see any references to this particular behaviour anywhere. As I said, I can compact manually but I'd prefer not to have to. I am a bit worried that my OE might be corrupted. Any ideas anyone?

Just when you think you've heard everything, I must say that's a new one on me.

Compacting is Identity specific, so I would think the problem would be in your current Identity (of course a lot of people would look at your problem as a solution to out of control compacting ).
You could try creating a new Identity and see if it does the same thing.
If the compacting works properly in the new one, Import your mail from the old Identity.

Im not sure if this will completely take care of the problem listed by the OP, bu when i searched Google for "disable outlook in firefox" that thread was the first thing that popped up. I have found out how to change the mailto: action in firefox (3.5.7) to stop outlook from opening.

Tools>options>applications
find "mailto" in content type column, and click the drop down box in the action column. There you can select from several mail clients including gmail.

This same procedure can be used to select which application opens most relivent file types.

When Outlook Express is opened, every e-mail that was sent "return reciept requested" causes Outlook Express to try to send a return receipt, which then fails resulting in an error message.

OE ignores all changes to the "return receipt" functions and continues to try to send them even before they are opened; when the mouse hovers over the particular e-mail.

A recent malware infection (which has been removed) caused a change in the registry and turned off Task Manager (which has been corrected). I suspect the problem with OE is also a registry issue, but cannot Google any information on this specific function or issue.

Two questions:

1. Is there a registry entry that controls the fuction of OE's "return receipt" function ?

2. If OE is uninstalled & reinstalled, will the stored e-mails be lost ?

An aggravating factor is that sbcglobal does not have a configuration setting to prevent duplicate e-mails from being downloaded and a recent change to the e-mail account by sbcglobal has resulted in the messages being duplicated 2 and 3 times in OE, and it is attempting to download another 4000 ( ! ) more, which will also all be duplicates.

This "return receipt" problem is preventing the ability to delete the duplicate & unwanted e-mails, so OE's functionality is reduced to nil.

Also, is there a static limit to the number of messages that OE can store & manage ?

I have outlook express 6 for a email client, I was getting reminded to compact my email messages every one in a while so I said yes and let it compact my messages ... now I don't seel any email other than new email that has come in since I compacted the mail. Does anyone know how to get my messages back ... please help

Have you tried to see if there are any bak files in the Recycle Bin:

Make sure Outlook Express is not running.
Open the Recycle Bin on your Windows Desktop .
Locate the ".bak" files corresponding to the Outlook Express folders you want to recover.
The ".bak" file will be named like the folder in Outlook Express.
To restore a folder called "Archive", look for "Archive.bak", for example.
Click on the ".bak" file with the right mouse button.
Select Restore from the menu.
Locate the file in Windows explorer and open the folder it's contained in.
Drag and drop the ".dbx" file corresponding to the Outlook Express folder you want to recover to your Desktop.
In the Outlook Express store folder, click on the ".bak" file to be recovered with the right mouse button.
Select Rename from the menu.
Change the ".bak" file extension to ".dbx".
If the file was called "Archive.bak", for example, make sure it is named "Archive.dbx" now.
Open Outlook Express.
If your emails have been recovered, delete the ".dbx" file you moved to the Desktop.

Also if you do not find the files in the above location search your computer for *.Bak

Hi, I just got a new laptop and I'm trying to export/import my address book from Outlook Express. When I import the addresses it only imports individual names and not "groups." It there a way to import groups as well? When I exported the address book from the old laptop I used the "text file (comma separated values)" option. Is this the right one to use?

No, it will not Export the Groups, you will need to recreate them.
The .csv file is the best backup, this format makes it available to Import to other programs.

As an alternative, you can make a copy of the .wab file and copy it over to the new computer.
To find the location of the original Address Book,
Open the Address Book in Outlook Express:
Tools > About Address Book
The directory will appear along with the name of the .wab file, which usually is the User Account name.wab

Navigate to that directory and copy the .wab file.
Copy the .wab file to the Desktop on the laptop,
find the location of the Address Book for Outlook Express,
Check this directory on the Laptop,
C:\Documents and Settings\User Account\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\User Account.wab
rename the .wab file to User Account.wab.old
Copy the backup .wab file to that directory and rename it to the same name as the current .wab file: User Account.wab

In Outlook Express, click the Address Book icon to open, the replaced Address Book should appear.

Let us know if that works for you or not.

I am just not able to access Windows Update - haven't been able to for ages. Have posted about it on the site before. I get a "done" message "but with errors on page" and then an error script. Anyway, re security fixes not being accepted because "IE6 need to be installed". I do have IE 6, as I said, and here is the version:

Alternatively, from Outlook Express select Help, then select About Outlook Express and confirm that the msoe.dll matches the version called out in Q328676.

My operating system is Windows XP and my email program is Outlook Express. It's always worked fine, until about two weeks ago, when I try to delete mail in my Inbox, they don't delete. When I click the "delete" button, it appears to mash down like it's supposed to, but nothing happens. I tried going to the "microsoft.com/downloads" site to install their IE6 Service Pack, but got the message "Setup has detected a newer version of Internet Explorer already installed on this computer. Setup cannot continue." Any ideas?

I have started facing a strange problem recently. I re-installed windows 2000 and tried SP2 and ie6 updates but problem still persists.

On pressing key "L" anywhere, it launches outlook express as a side-effect. This is true even when some other application is open and in focus. The opened window shows inbox folder in place of default home screen of outlook express. I have noticed that in folders pane in outlook express, pressing L selects Local Folder and pressing it again selects Inbox. However, in this case the window with inbox is opened out of nowhere. I tried by deleting files from profile that may cause this (Like shortcuts) and also checked with a new user but in vain. One thing I have observed is that when I use on-screen keyboard, L key is working fine. This makes me think that it is not a shortcut recognized by explorer. I checked keyboard with other operating system in my dual-boot configuration and it is working fine there.

I am not able to work in windows 2000 because of this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Meaning that you created a new User Account and the L key still persists in starting Outlook Express?

It is definitely the On Screen Keyboard.

Ugh, tried to duplicate your problem and I was successful!
My keys affected were e, f, l, m, r
Outlook Express was not opened with the L key, it went to the Welcome Screen!

On the On Screen Keyboard, I clicked the key that looks kind of like a calculator, between the Win Key and the Ctrl key.
Right side of the Space bar.

I don't know if I am out of the woods yet.
Until the On Screen keyboard actually let me type in this window, I clicked that key about four times.

Let us know what happens.

I am getting ready to install windows 98 again on my new system, and I'd rather not have to re-enter all my email addresses into the address book. Anyone know how to save this file? I've checked out several files marked "address book," but none of them seem to store my addresses.

I am not postitive but i think they are saved in .WAB or .CVS files. With OE open you can go to files>export>address book and i think that it can be saved to a floppy. I tried it as a .cvs(comma separated values) and saved it to floppy which when opened looked like an Excel file. I tried the other option but had no option i could see to save it to a floppy and even though it said it was exported, i dont know where it went.

Last night a popup message from McAfee told me that Dell Security center was trying to access the internet. I was in the midst of downloading and reading email, and being a dummy, I gave one-time permission.

Soon afterward, I began to suspect a virus, as I received a virus notification popup and an email from my ISP re: a deleted virus. As I was deleting items from my inbox, Outlook Express froze. I tried restarting, and OE hangs on the inbox and hogs 96%+ system resources.

This morning, my ISP program showed an error and my Antivirus was corrupted. I did a system restore and redownloaded the antivirus, which solved my problem with getting on the 'net. I've scanned and come up with nothing and downloaded a special scan and remove tool (Stinger) from McAfee for the virus it warned me about yesterday....Sober, I think. But still, OE hangs up on the Inbox and I can't read or remove or access the toolbar. It says "no email selected."

Any ideas?

Whenever I click on a link in an email in Outlook Express 6, a Program Not Found dialog box opens up, and says Windows cannot find dustingforfingerprints (which I believe is some sort of blog thing one of my kids has), and it also says This program is needed for opening files of type 'URL: http protocol'. Then it prompts me to enter the location of dustingfingerprints. I guess it thinks this is the program to enter weblinks?

Hello and welcome thread mate probably a daft question but why remove it?? I use it all the time with the amount of mails I have and it takes up such little space.

Having said that I would hazard a guess that apart from mucking around in the registry (fraught with horrible consequences) I can see no way of doing what you want to do.
If you do want to go that route I would suggest doing this at the earliest opportunity. I always do this after each and every install in two locations for safety sake.

Hello,
Is there any way to disable the "Your search might be slow because indexing is not running. Click to turn on the index" message?

I have disabled windows search service for performance consideration, but this message bar appears every time I am searching for files, and even if I clicking the cross on the right of the bar, next time when I am doing another search it re-appears.
How can I permanently disable it, by registry or other means?

I would like to say that this notification will pop up if you disable the Windows Search Service. You can click the bar to turn on
the Index and the notification will disappear.
 
If you would like to not turn on the Index and still want to disable the
Windows Search Service, I think we cannot remove this alert.

This should be a basic question but I could not find the answer in Outlook Express Help. Using Outlook Express. When I send out a group email, is there a way to just have the name of the group in the "TO" box, for instance "Friends" At present, Outlook Express spells out each and every email address and this upsets some recipients.

Running Outlook Express 6.0 on Windows 2000 all latest service packs and updates for both. Also installed is Outlook 2003.

Outlook is used for Office e-mail and can not be removed.

OE6 is used for personal e-mail accounts and News group access which is required for job support.

I have 2 e-mail accounts set up in OE6 and the "Leave a copy on server" checkbox is supposed to be checked all the time for both accounts. On average about once a month the box becomes unchecked on one or both accounts. This is a problem because quite often I will read and delete e-mails thinking that the e-mails will be retrieveable at home from the server. When I find that the e-mails are not on the server I can look back at the office and find that "leave a copy on server" check box is unchecked. I am the only one with access to my machine and those accounts. Has any one heard of this before? I was unable to come up with anything on the MS support knowledge base. and don't think that I should be charged $ to report a bug to Microsoft through their tech support.

My Outlook Express opens and immediatly starts sending messages and won't recieve unless I hit stop and then click recieve. If I let it go on sending it takes forever then ends in error. I suppose that there must be a way to delete the outgoing message, whatever it may be, so Outlook won't keep trying to send it every time I open Outlook Express. If anyone can help me I'd appreciate it. My os is Windows xp home edition. Thanks, Mike.

For Windows XP:
Enable: Hidden files and folders:
Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders,
verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
uncheck Hide Extensions for known file types
Apply, OK, to save and close.

Start > Search > For Files or Folders
All Files and Folders
key in:
.dbx
Look in: Local Drives
click the arrow for More Advanced Options
place a checkmark in:
Search System Folders
Search hidden files and folders
Search subfolders
Click Search
Locate the Outbox.dbx file and rename it Outbox.old
Or just delete the Outbox.dbx file, Outlook Express will create a fresh new one.

You can also configure Outlook Express to NOT Send/Receive at startup.
Tools > Options > General tab
Uncheck: Send and receive messages at startup
Apply, OK, to save and close.

Let us know what happens.

Hi guys I work for an ISP and embarrassingly I am really stumped with this one. I have a customer using Outlook Express every he try's to compose an email OE try's to force him to create a contact and its annoying him. Every time he clicks send it comes up "no matches found" he is using XP I did a google search but only found information regarding this issue related to 98 and 95 none of the resolutions applied to XP.

Sadly my XP machine is out of action at the moment and I cant tinker with it, your help is much appreciated.

After 4 years with no answer, I hope this helps someone else and saves the obligatory 1/2 hour searching dead posts with no helpful solution (in 2 minutes flat).

HERE'S HOW TO 'FIX' THE 'NO ADDRESS FOUND' ERROR: (1.) Open Address book and simply double click on the faulty contact entry. (2.) The 'Properties' window should pop up, now click on 'name' tab and add a dash after the 'last' name field entry. The 'display' field should reflect the additional dash after the name. (3.) Now click 'OK' to save changes then close the address book. (4.) Now create a new message and begin typing the contact name which should auto-fill the name showing a dash after name. Now it should work, BUT the extra dash may be seen by the recipient. TRY ADDING A DIFFERENT CHARACTER AFTER THE NAME IF DASH LOOKS FUNNY. GOOD LUCK ----dUCKBILL

David Einstein, San Francisco Chronicle "computer guru" has stated that when one "deletes" e-mail FROM the Deleted Items Folder, that instead of being finally deleted they go to a hidden subfolder. This is why, he states, periodically Outlook Express will put up a query-box asking whether one would like "old messages" to be compressed to save space. Einstein says that what actually is being asked, is for permission to delete, deleted items, finally and forever from the hidden deleted items folder.

That Einstein's statement is correct, is implied by the fact that un-intentionally deleted items, from the deleted items folder, can easily be restored. That "restore" comes, naturally, from the hidden subfolder.

OK....my query is: What is the directory and file-name of that hidden subfolder?

This isn't a hidden folder. It's called Deleted Items. If you can't see it, click on View on the top bar, then click layout. Make sure that Folder list is checked. Click apply then OK. You should now see the deleted items folder on the left.

In XP, all the OE mail foldders are stored as .dbx files. Do a file search for inbox.dbx. Mine is in
C:\Documents and Settings\[my name]\Application Data\Identities\{742DC712-BE9D-4EF7-BA65-C0041FC3121A}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\Inbox.dbx
Copy it somewhere - click on the copy to make sure it works.

Win XP Home Ed; Outlook Express 6.0. Have two identities. Yesterday one of the identities began to not allow moving unwanted messages to the Delete folder. Also could not move them to any other existing folder.

Each time try to delete or move or drag and drop get the following error message: "The selected message(s) could not be moved. An error has occurred."

Can delete emails by hitting the Shift-Delete keys but not desirable. Found that I can create a new folder and move or drag and drop to it and then delete the new folder but also not desirable.

Other identity functions normally.

Any ideas? TJThiel

Sounds like the inbox may be getting corrupted.

Move the messages you want to keep into a folder that is not a subfolder of the Inbox just in case something goes wrong or you have to end up deleting the inbox file.

Then make sure hidden files and file extensions are showing (My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View tab, check "Show hidden files and folders," uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files).

Then in Outlook Express in the identity having the problem, go to Tools>Options>Maintenance tab>Store Folder button. Once you know the exact location of the store folder that identity is using (there will be more than one with a long alphanumeric name so be sure you've got the exact name), close OE, navigate to it and delete the "folders.dbx" file. If that doesn't solve the problem, go back and delete the "inbox.dbx" file.

If you have to delete inbox.dbx, OE will open with a new, empty Inbox. Just move your saved messages back into it.

I'm using Win XP Home and subscribe to Microsoft's automatic updates and kind of trust Bill's kids not to corrupt anything in the process.

So the other day after an update session (Service Pact 3 maybe? ) When I restarted the computer OE was totally unavailable, desktop icon gone, couldn't find in "Programs". So I am wondering what happened. I did run a "find" for .dbx files and all the OE file catagories I had before came up as still existing but I can't access them without the main program, at least with my limited knowledge.

Should I try to reinstall OE 6? And where do I find it? Or what. I have had this computer for 4 or 5 years and lots of mail is stored in the OE files. I have a secondary question, if I ever do recover my old OE can I transfer some of the files to Word or some other program that I want to archive instead of burdening OE with them.

I have accessed my current e-mails thru my ISP since the disappearnce of OE but would sure like to have the other archive files available again.

Any help is welcome, thanks

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Open the Run box, press the Windows Logo key and R.
Or use, Start > Run

Key in exactly:
"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe"
Click: OK

Outlook Express should start.
To restore the shortcut for Outlook Express:
Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Add/Remove Window Components (Left side of the Control Panel)
In the Add/Remove Window Components window, scroll down to Outlook Express.
If Outlook Express is checked, uncheck it.
Click Next then click Finish

Click the Add/Remove Window Components again, this time, place a check mark for Outlook Express.
Click Next then click Finish

A shortcut should now be on the Start menu, it will probably be at the end of the Start menu. From that shortcut, you can send it to the Desktop as a shortcut and drag the second shortcut to the Quick Launch bar, if desired.
Let us know if that works for you or not.

I use Internet Explorer 7 and Outlook Express 6 to access my MSN email account. At times, when opening Outllook Express, it will not automatically search for my new messages. It says I am offline & asks me if I want to be online. I have to click on "Send/Receive Messages" to activate my search for new messages. If I restart my computer and then click on Outlook Express, it will automatically search my Inbox immediately, everytime. I went into options and I have the box checked that says "Send and Receive Messages at Startup". It seems Outlook Express isn't recognizing that I am always online. Any suggestions?

Several times a day I get a message "Outlook Express. To free up disc space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes" which is preceeded by 10 minutes of my PC being very slow. I have 50% disc space free (37GB out of 74). I run Windows 97. I have defragmented my disc several times. I have used RegCure regularly and it has made no difference. At other times, I try to start Outlook Express and a message comes up saying it is already running, followed a little while later by the above error message. Any ideas, please?

I messed up! Sometime back, I tried some stuff I shoulda left alone! It happened months ago, and I forget the details (yeah, I know, if I forget what I messed up, or how, then how can I ask for or expect any help!). Short version: MSIE v6, running under Windows XP home edition SP1 (yeah, yeah) no longer sees the existence of Outlook Express v6, which is still, indeed, fully installed on my puter. Trouble is, I can't go to Tools/Internet Options/Programs and choose OE as my default e-mail reader, which I've been using for years now, since MSIE doesn't know it's there!

I've tried removing and reinstalling OE, from the Control Panel. The "remove" option takes only a fraction of second and then ends. Hard for me to believe it's really removing anything. So if it didn't, then reinstalling won't do anything cuz the "install" process, starting from one of MS's online sources of the original program, would only detect that OE is still on my hard drive, and would stop immediately. Indeed, that's what seems to happen, when I try reinstalling OE after trying the "remove" option in Control Panel.

I haven't tried reinstalling MSIE v6. And I sure don't want to have to go all the way back to something like format c: and using Dell's CDs to start all over again!

NAV is certainly part of the problem. When I just try launching OE, I get a NAV-oriented message about trying to create an empty folder... Read more

Can anyone please tell me how I can change the way the date is shown for messages received/sent. By this I mean I would like the the day/month/year to be shown, as it is now it is month/day/year and it is slightly confusing as I do not know why this has started happening. I have used Outlook Express for several years without any major complaints.

Now, however, for whatever reason, next to certain messages I find small "plus sign" boxes which allow me to expand and collapse conversations/threads, like in Newsgroups. For my e-mail set-up, I really don't care to have this function. I find it both disruptive and confusing. I liked it much better the way it was before when all my incoming messages appeared individually and precisely in chronological order. The way things are now, I often find it necessary to go back and click on "plus signs" to find new messages hidden underneath. In one thread I found a message which didn't even belong in that particular thread.

Using Outlook Express Tools I at least figured out how to automatically expand conversations rather than have them collapsed. I don't believe this solved my problem, though. I would like to get rid of the "plus signs" altogether.

Could someone please tell me how to return to the simpler set-up I once had?

Hello all,

Recently, I have noticed that for most messages received, there is a paperclip icon in the Inbox which would indicate that there is an attachment to the message.

When I open the message, there are no attachments.

All I have done recently is uninstall Nortons Internet Security and install AVG Free antivirus and Windows defender. I had also installed and uninstalled Zone Alarm and Ewido Antispyware before finishing up with my AVG and Defender configuration.

Any help or explanation as to why this is happening would be appreciated.

Hello Friends,

I use outlook express 6 for checking my emails.

I am not able to view any attachment sent to my email. Whenever I open a mail containing an attachment I get the following message

" OE removed access to the unsafe attachments in your mail: filename "

Though I am able to see the text in the message. But I am not getting the attachment file. All the emails having attachment show the same above message. I am attaching a screeshot of the error.


Please help me in rectifying the error.

Untick the option "Prevent any attachments from being opened or saved that might............" or words to that effect.

Can't be exact as I never use OE, but the option is enabled by default.

I'm get this error ("msoe.dll could not be loaded") when I try to start it. Does anyone have an idea about why this would happen? The dll does exist in the dir.

Have you recently made any changes to your software? This behavior generally manifests itself after upgrading/downgrading/changing IE, OE, or installing certain service packs. It can also occur if you remove the Windows Address Boox (which OE requires).

I have recently changed ISP to talktalk.net. and I have set up outlook express to recieve my emails. I have gone thru' the internet wizard and set up my account on the "servers" box as my incoming mail (POP3) as mail.talktalk.net. The default setting was "127.0.0.1".

I then click on "apply" and I think fine & dandy. But no, within about an hour the default setting "127.0.0.1" has reared its ugly head again and thus my emails dont come thru'. What can I do to rectify this? Is it an ISP problem? Is it a Dell Computer problem? Or is it a Windows XP problem?

For the second time in recent months I have had a problem with lost messages. On Friday night when I attempted to shut down my PC, suddenly I received an onscreen message box indicating that my messages were being "compacted." I have Win XP Pro, Service Pack 2 and use Outlook Express.

Someone told me that Win XP Pro with SP 2 automaticallly gives a prompt after 100 closings of OE, asking if you want to compact your messages. The strange thing is that both times I've had this problem, I was never given a prompt. In other words, the compacting started on its own, which was completely unexpected. First I lost my Inbox messages; next, I lost my Sent Items. Is this normal? Is this an issue only with OE? If so, maybe I should change to another e-mail program.

In the past I used both Macallan and DBXtract in an attempt to retrieve my lost messages, but had not success with either program. Someone had given me instructions for these programs, but I had trouble following them. Still, I'm not sure if either of them would help retrieve my messages.

I'm wondering if what I'm experiencing is really "normal" or if it may perhaps be the result of a virus problem I had recently. I am totally confused by what is happening, and I have no clue yet as to how to either prevent or avoid it.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help.

All of a sudden I could not find my sent mails in the Sent Items Folder. I looked for help from the forums and got a suggestion to create another profile to test whether I can see my sent mails there. I followed the instructions but there was not enough to lead me through so I don't think I completed creating a profile. Then I got another suggestion to purchase the Registry Booster to clean up my registry. After I did that I was able to see my sent mails again.

However I still continue to see the Outlook Data File Popup with the message "This data file has not been configured. Select an existing file to configure or try the name of a new file to create". After I clicked "OK" then I got another pop up to prompting me to choose a file from the Libraries.Documents directory. I clicked "Cancel" then I got another pop up with "Properities for this data file must be defined prior to use". I clicked "OK" and then I got the Outlook Data File Popup and the same subsequent popups again. After clicking through I was able to start my Outlook but when use the registry Booster to scan I got more error messages. So apparently these errors from Outlook is mucking up my registry. Anyone has any idea about this problem? Please help. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you. Helen.

Firstly, you certainly do not need any registry boosters to solve Outlook data file issues - was this a recommendation made by someone, or was this suggested to you by an automated pop-up? If its the latter, is there any chance you could be infected by some sort of malware?

To solve the Outlook issue, do you know where your Outlook data file is being stored? Can you do a search on your computer for all files with this extension:

.pst

Post back here with your findings. Also, can you tell us about your current system : what anti-virus software are you using. I'm a bit concerned about this Registry Booster : generally speaking, in most cases you really do not need/want to be mucking with the registry at all.

Today, 25 Aug 2016, my Windows 10 PC loaded Outlook 2013 and at the same time I received the following message:

Thinking the message to be genuine, a file was downloaded called OneDriveSetup.exe which was some 8Mb in size.
Is or was this update genuine?

I have since deleted the file as a precaution. Checking this further, I find that in folder:
C:\Users\Mr Morgan\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneDrive\Update
There are two new files called:
OneDriveUpdate.exe which is 20Mb and the other is an .xml file called update.xml.
Are these files genuine?

Using Windows 7 Enterprise Edition (64 bit) and Office 2010. When dragging a message from mail to the Calendar (in the lower left under the folder list) to create a new meeting/appointment, the calendar dialog will "pop under". How do I get the calendar dialog box to grab focus?

I recently received an e-mail that requested a "READ RECIEPT" response via an on-screen
message. I elected to send the response but when I pressed send/receive I got an error
message. However the instruction to send the message still seems to exist and EVERY time
I press send/receive my PC tries to send this message and fails EVERY time.
I have deleted the original message but no change.
In the Outlook Send/Receive Progress box the following information appears:-
Connection to server was interrupted
Error No 0x800CCC0F
Address not verified
Contact ISP

I have pressed Cancel All in this box but no change

Does anyone know how to stop my PC trying to send this message?

All of a sudden, an address that I email to often won't go through. I get the message "DELIVERY FAILURE: User [email protected] not listed in public Name & Address Book"

I tried to access help but I can't understand what they're talking about. The address book, or whatever it is, is a mystery to me. It's not related to the "contacts", is it? Because I have all my email addresses in the contacts area. The address book, I don't know.

How do I resolve this?

I'm having this problem for last two weeks. Every time I receive this messages, outlook stops responding. It takes from 5 to 10 min to get it back on track. Did everything, I guess, possible with junk and spam filters, nothing stops this annoying spams to get to my in box folder. The messages look like one I attached; always with dashes and separated words like -M-eso-th-el-io-ma or -C-r-ed-it with no sender info and addressed to nobody. Please advise.

I would like to be able to suppress the Out of Office message for particular email addresses (like I could on Lotus Notes!), but cannot see a way to do this.

The need is especially useful for newsletters and other non-manned addresses, because the ooo message triggers an auto response from them which triggers another ooo from me.... well you get the picture.

I also have my home emails copied to my work Outlook account, and when I have the ooo message set, it triggers an ooo message to the sender - I may be out of the office, but not necessarily away from home!

Hope someone can help.

After reading this site and searching the net, I tried to rename the user, backed up files, started from scratch and tried to import the old files....still no success...I need some actual walk me through it help.....I went to the mail icon in the control panel...set-up a user then associated a data file, in the email section, I tried to switch the default file to the one I wanted....still no luck....Please, if you are very well knowledgeable about Outlook 2003, I need help....I have some business files which I am trying to restore and business contacts to contact so I'm in a bind because Outlook is not working....Stoe

I'm a new member but have gotten a lot of useful info from this forum over the past couple months, thank you! Hopefully someone can help with this issue.

I have a user at my work who is having an issue in Outlook 2003. When she replies to or forwards a message, the spell check is checking the entire document even though she has the "ignore original message text in replies and forwards" option checked. Here's some info on her setup:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
Microsoft Office Standard Service Pack 3
Does not have the "prefix" option set
Uses Word as the email editor

I have read in other forums that opting to not use Word as the email editor can cure this issue, but all of our users use Word as their email editor. Also, this issue just appeared out of nowhere a couple days ago. Possibly a windows update?

Hello,

I am trying to get my Outlook 2003/2002 Notes Connector to work with Lotus Notes 5.0.11, but I keep getting the following error when I open Outlook: "The local message file can't be accessed. The file is already in use by another user."

Things I've tried to fix this:
1) re-install Notes client
2) re-install Outlook Connector
3) re-install Outlook 2003
4) deleted all but first 4 lines in notes.ini
5) changed the name of my .nst file
6) deleted and recreated Outlook profile (numerous times)

Any help would be appreciated!

If you go to http://dsbl.org/listing?71.96.2.xx <--- IP altered for safety. It tells you that this IP has been blacklisted as one that maybe is sending spam. Okay, that ain't me or anyone in my household! It also says, contact your ISP so... I call Verizon DSL but they tell me it's actually a MSN Outlook issue. Verizon says, the IP it references is one that Outlook makes... creates... or something... when it sends out my email. Huh?! So...



I call MSN only to be told that I have to go to Dell since they made the machine. So... I go to Dell and they say everything that Verizon says is hogwash but it'll cost me $100 for them to fix it. Ugh!! So...



Does this look... sound... smell... familar to anyone??? If any mods need the actual IP lemme know, I'll PM it to you.

New Dell 530 computer, new Office Pro package installed by Dell. Everything works pretty smoothly so far, but every time I open Outlook (not Outlook Express), I get a message "A data file did not close properly the last time it was used and is being checked for problems. Performance might be affected while the check is in progress." I can still check email, appointments, etc, but it works in the background and sometimes interferes with the keyboard or mouse. And if the program is open long enough, it reports a message "data file check complete." It's not a huge issue but is very annoying. Any ideas?

By default I use the "HTML" format for my outgoing Outlook messages. Whenever I need to paste something into my message, such as a portion of a Word doc or a website, I normaly like to do this without any formatting. Normally, when you use the "Rich Text" message format instead of "HTML", you have the "Paste Special" option in the Edit menu which allows you to paste only the text without formatting. Why is this option not available when you use the "HTML" message format?

My current work-around is to paste my selection into Notepad first and then into the e-mail but I was hoping to skip this step.

Any thoughts?

If you have office 2002, you should have a little icon at the end of the text that you click. The other option is to set the prefrences to use Word as your E-mail editor.

I have email service with msn.com. The emails on the msn server are ok. But when I download some html email messages using Outlook 2003, the emails appear with "on behalf of" the sender at the top of the email, and the email message has been blanked out.

Any ideas?

that sounds like spam. I get blank emails on my throwaway spam account that I use for usenet. "on behalf of" means, I believe, that the from address is different than the sender address, in the email headers.

I am using Microsoft-Office 2010 Version 14.0.7109.5000 on a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601). I use Outlook 2010 as my email client for two IMAP Gmail accounts.

I have checked the box within Outlook 2010 options "When replying to a message that is not in the Inbox, save the reply in the same folder". This feature is not working and all sent emails are filed in "Sent Mail".

Strange that Outlook 2003 used to be able to search for and find a dollar sign. My folders are indexed correctly so that's not the issue. But Outlook 2007 just isn't able to search for this type of character it seems. However if you have found a way to do it, let me know I would appreciate it as I often need to do this type iof search.

Anyone else ever had this problem and had any luck figuring it out?

My system crashed recently and I have had to restore everything. I reinstalled Outlook 2007 and was able to restore my PST file from a backup I had using the genie backup product. All my files and folders are now restored.

When I click on the send/receive button, I get this message "The operation failed. An object could not be found"

I deleted my email setup account (I'm downloading from my att account) and re set it up using the instructions on the att site. I also ran the 'repair' function off the Office CD and did the Office diagnostics.

Any suggestions?

Hi there,

I think the title is self-explanatory. I have installed the Google search provider from the official Google webpage (Make Google your Default Search Engine) on IE 8 and noticed that it does not suggest as I type. I opened "Manage Search Providers" and see "Not Available" besides "Search suggestions".

Any help on this?

A friend is using OE with XP (Home) - SP3 installed. Also uses AVG.

She normally leaves her computer on continuously, but does periodically reboot it.

Recently, after being on for much of the day where she has used OE a time or two, OE will hang. Clicking on the shortcut or going to the program file and trying to open the application results in not activity. Checking the Task Manager shows that OE is not a running application.

Once in a while, a window appears saying, "An Unknown Error has occured".

The only way to resolve the problem so far is to reboot the computer, which is a bit aggrevating.

Any suggestions?

Hi. I'm new to this forum, and am hoping someone could help.

I have downgraded to XP from Vista and want to go back to using Outlook Express.

I was able to migrate my mail and contacts TO Windows Mail when I moved to a Vista PC, but now when I want to move back to XP, I have no idea how to get my mail and contact data back into Outlook Express...even if that means migrating to a third party platform like Thunderbird first (Windows mail on vista >> Thunderbird or other mail client >> Outlook Express on XP)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I am having problems with outlook express 6, it is taking about 1 1/2-2 mins to execute. This seems to be connected to a problem I have with WinMX. Everything was woking fine with my system until one day when I tried to run Winmx i got an error message saying something like "Winmx has failed to execute please reinstall and if this problem persists check your computer for Viruses" on the same day Outlook decided to slow down. I was about to do a hard drive format and clean install anyway so after installing everything again Winmx and Outlook worked perfectly...but only once where after it went back to the same problem.I have since done a second format and it is definately only after i install Winmx that i get the problem. The version of winmx i have used has been different on each occasion.
Any ideas???? I dont want to have to live without either program but if i had to make a sacrifice i would keep Outlook.
So its over to you guys.

In Outlook Express, under Tools, there is a category "Synchronize All". Often times, I find it necessary to click on "Synchronize All" to get "all" of my Outlook Express e-mail. What comes down --sometimes-- in Outlook Express is not "all" of my e-mail. I know this because I am using Mailwasher Pro and it shows additional mail prior to downloading to Outlook Express. So I click on "Synchronize All" in Outlook Express and the balance of the mail appears. I have only one mail account. So I don'tunderstand. Perhaps someone in this forum can speak to this ... and clarify exactly what "Synchronize All" means.

Outlook Express v6 running under Win XP SP2.

Having clicked on File | Export | Messages , I get a message saying "This will export messages from Outlook Express to Microsoft Outlook or Microsoft Exchange".

I clicked on OK and that's it. Nothing.

If I click File | Export | Address Book , I am then invited to name a file to which the address book should be exported.

Can anyone explain what is happening with export messages?

I recently started having a very strange problem w/my outlook express (v6). I have 2 identities and it is only affecting one of these identities, the other identity is problem-free.

Here is the problem:

When I send an email, the send/receive box that pops up tells me that i have an error ("Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks, etc"). However, the area under the "errors" tab is blank. The message which I was trying to send then remains in the outbox. The message is then resent whenever Outlook sends/receives mail. I have to move the item from the Outbox to "Deleted Items" or "Drafts" to stop outlook from constantly resending the message. I cannot move the message to "sent items," if i try to do so it tells me that an error has occurred.

Does anyone have any idea why it would start doing this?

To make matters more confusing, the problem first started only w/messages that had attachments, then every message, and yesterday, 3 or 4 messages actually didn't have this problem ( i send dozens to hundreds of messages a day), but now it's happening to every message again.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Move messages you want to keep to folders of your own creation in Outlook Express.

Outlook Express is probably due for some maintenance.
Close all windows.
Open Outlook Express
File > Work Offline
Click on the Local Folders folder
File > Folder > Compact All Folders
Walk away from the computer until the process is complete.
Avoid starting this process if the possibility of a power outage is imminent such as a thunderstorm in progress.

Should the compaction process ever be interrupted, restart it before accessing any folders and allow it to finish.
Send yourself a Test message to see if there are still problems.

If the messages are still stuck in the Outbox:

Enable Show Hidden Files and folders

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the check mark for Hide Extensions for known file types.

Move any messages you want to save, out of the Outbox folders, check both Identities.
Close Outlook Express.

Search:

Start > Search > For Files or Folders > All files and folders,
In the field for: all or part of the file name
Key in:
.dbx
Below that, click on More advanced options
in the field: Type of File, select (All Files and Folders)
place a checkmark in:

This is a friend's computer, Win XP (Home) SP3, 512 MB RAM. He uses Outlook for his email, and when he gets the emails, these go either to inbox, junk and SENT folder. I have searched for this error, but have not been able to find a solution. Why would incoming emails go to sent folder? Many thanks for your help.

ok...this is my first time posting, hope i do it right. when i send a message in outlook (not outlook express) i get an immediate response from the 'system administrator' saying my message is undeliverable because "no transport provider was available for delivery to this recipient". i have no clue what that means or what to do about it. any help would be great! thanks.

If the default program for an extension is wrong, I find it most natural to change it using the 'Choose Program' option on the 'Open With' menu from the context menu for the file. However, that stopped working correctly a few weeks ago. It is supposed to bring up a dialogue that allows one to choose another program and, optionally, to make that be the new default for the file type. However, what is happening now is that it goes ahead and invokes an irrelevant program (the Emacs text editor) which cannot handle the file. I never see the 'Choose Program' dialogue.

(E.g., I am trying to open a video file with a different player, and, when I click 'Choose Program', it immediately hands the file to Emacs, rather than giving me the chance to say I want to use VLC. (Fortunately, Emacs realizes that the file is too big for anything it can normally do and awaits verification before actually trying.))

I know I can still modify the association using Folder Options; but I would rather get 'Choose Program' working again if anyone can show me how.

Running Windows XP Home SP3 on a dual-core AMD Athlon computer with AMD 960G for graphics. (I think the TSG SysInfo would be overkill for this issue; but I will provide it in a reply if someone thinks it could help.)

Sometime over the last few weeks Google's "More" drop-down and its "Search Tools" menu items have quit working in IE10. The other buttons that let you select web, images, shopping, etc. still work properly.

The "More" and "Search Tools" buttons get focus when the mouse is over them and they animate when clicked but nothing happens. I have Google Chrome and Apple's Safari installed and the buttons work properly on these browsers.

I've googled it but most of the posts found are about a not-quite-the-same problem of the buttons just working momentarily. At any rate, I tried the fix [clearing cache and cookies] that some of the posters said worked but it didn't make any difference.

I've disabled all of the ad-ons and the problem is still there. I re-enabled each add-on one at a time and tried it but none of them had any effect.

I've disabled my Norton Security Suite and the problem still exists.

I've reset IE and, other than losing all of my saved passwords, it too made no difference.

I think this might be a useful clue.

I noticed that for all of the buttons that are working, when I pass the mouse pointer over them it displays a URL down in the status bar. However, for the two that are not working nothing is displayed. It appears that the controls associated with these buttons either don't exist or are being blocked.

Does anyone have the solution for this, or at least and idea of what the problem is?

you can observe one thing here. All the menu items are just links. But More and Search Tools menu items are different. More is drop down menu and Search Tools also kind of drop down but with sub menu items.

So it seems like there are some script errors with your IE 10 browser.

But i am sorry, re installing IE is the only option i can suggest.

I have some kind of malware on my system and I need help to remove it.

Symptoms: After performing a web search using google and click my desired site, my browser is usually redirected to one of the following sites: zapmeta, netster, romemaster, stopzilla, toseeka. It's different everytime.

What I've done thus far: I've run Spybot and Ad-Aware during a "safemode" session. These found a lot of "threats," which I removed. This did not fix the problem. I then tried to restore my computer to an earlier date, but that failed.

For some time now, double clicking on a folder no longer opens it as usual. Instead, double clicking on a folder causes a separate Explorer Search window to open, with that folder's name under the "search in" tab. In fact, when i right click on a folder, the first and bold-faced option is "search", as opposed to "open". So to open any folder I have to right click it and hit open, which is slow and annoying. I cleaned out my registry, spyware, viruses, everything, and still this problem persists. I also checked the Mouse control panel, nothing there.

Anyone know what's going on with my computer?

Open "My Documents", go into Tools>Folder Options and under General>Browse Folders choose Open each folder in the same window. Save that and then goto View>Explorer Bar> and click Folders.
