relative visiting and using wireless

Q: relative visiting and using wireless

My sister in law is in town and I hooked her up to our router. At home she uses timewarner roadrunner as her ISP. Her Outlook is not sending mail while connected through my wireless. Nothing should have changed in her outgoing mail provider, at least that I know of, so why would connecting to my wireless mean she gets a failure to send in outlook? Any thoughts?

A:Help..For a relative....Log

First your log shows that you are seriously behind on windows updates. It is essential that you update your windows before we continue to help you as the infections could reoccur. Go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and if it asks to install software, let it. Then click on the Scan link and let it do its thing. When its done you will see on your left a section called critical updates. Click on that section and install everything that you can. When it prompts you to reboot, do so. Then repeat this process again until there are no more critical updates listed. Then post a new log.

So I've done a few scans and registry fixes but I wanted someone to help me with a particular virus: click.livesearchnow, and give me a-ok for immunizations and back-ups. The click.livesearchnow keeps redirecting my searches from google to these add places that I have blocked thanks to AdBlock Plus. I've tried Malwarebytes and Spybot but they don't catch it. On my second drive D:\ I want to create a shortcut in D:\Folder_1\ to open a file in D:\Folder_1\Folder_2\

But Windows converts the resulting relative address to C:\ drive, not D:\ drive

Am I tied to using a .VBS file as the shortcut trigger ?
- or am I missing something in my "Location" string-path ?
- or have I stumbled over a Windows bug ?

Location: ..\Folder_2\MyFile ... is auto changed by Windows to C:\Folder_2\MyFile cannot be found
- when I want D:\*\Folder_2\MyFile

D: is not a static drive letter.

Thank you

A:Shortcuts and relative address

There is a way for short-cut to open a particular folder directly.

If there is no folder icon on the task bar, then open the windows explorer.
You can select the folder whether in C: or D: drives, click and drag to the task bar.
It will auto create this Folder icon, if there is not Folder Icon on the task bar.
At the Windows Explorer, select any number of folders, by click on folder and drag to the Folder Icon.

To access directly, right-click on the Folder Icon.
Then select the folder that you want, and it will open directly on the folder.

Hi, this is my first post on this board. Hoping you can help.

I have used CSS for awhile but am trying now to master relative positioning. I got everything to work pretty well except for the extra space at the very bottom of my document. I know this is created because space is created for all the "boxes" that I am relatively positioning. But I don't know how to get rid of it. I colored the boxes purple and white so you can easily see where they come from.

This validates with the W3C CSS validator, but it doesn't look right!!

Thank you for any assistance you can give. I would be very grateful to you if you can solve this problem!

Hello.

I have a large number of folders and shortcuts on an external drive.
Example:
Folder 1
- Folder A
- Folder B
Folder 2
- Folder A
- Folder B
Folder 3
- Folder A
- Folder B

To create a shortcut from Folder 1A to Folder 3B I'd need to go <Drive>\Folder 3\Folder B however since it's an external drive and the drive letting will most likely change depending which computer it's connected to absolutes wont work.

I know it's possible to use %windir%\explorer.exe "..\..\Folder 3\Folder A" but that opens a new explorer window rather than take the current window to the destination folder, it sounds like small problem but it gets annoying quick if you have to frequently swap between folders (theyre art assets).

Is there any other way to do this or at least have it use the current window or close the old one?

A:Relative path shortcuts help

Hi Nums,

Short answer: There is! But not through standard link files.

Long(er) answer: Shortcut files (.lnk) on USBs, which have varying drive letters, have been a flaw in Windows for a very long time. Link files only work with absolute paths. They simply won't work on external devices because of this.

However, there is a little known path linking feature in Windows called Symbolic links which act just like a shortcut would but they are able to take in absolute paths as well as relative paths.

Windows does a great job at hiding the feature from standard users, though, as there is no way to create one from the GUI. Creating a Symbolic link requires a command that must be issued to cmd.exe.

Using your example directory tree, the command for creating a Symbolic link from Folders 1\A to 3\B would be:

Code:
mklink /d "1\C" "..\3\B"

So I press OK and another pops up. I am now unable to do anything on the computer and I have no idea what is going on! I have used norton anti virus and that has come up with nothing. I am using windows XP and any sort of help in language i would understand would be brilliant.

A:relative newbie needing some help

You've got malware

SpywareBlaster http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
AdAware SE 1.05 http://www.majorgeeks.com/download506.html
SpyBot S&D 1.3 http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/

DL them (they are free), install them, check each for their
definition updates and then run AdAware and Spybot, fixing anything
they say.

In SpywareBlaster - Always enable all protection after updates
In SpyBot - After an update run immunize

Do these and reboot before the next step.

Then get HiJack This http://downloads.subratam.org/hijackthis.zip , put
it in a permanent folder (C:\HJT) , run it , DO NOT fix anything, post the
log here.

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 Laptop that is one year old. It has 2GB of memory and a Duo Core T5600 processor. I am using Windows XP Home Edition with SP2. I have Norton 360 Version 2.0, Spy Sweeper, and Registry Mechanic installed. I have other programs such as Adobe Photoshop Elements 5.0, Microsoft Office 2003 with Word as my default, Google Email, and Family Tree Maker 2005 installed. Note that the laptop is a “small business” version instead of “Home and Home Office” version, if that makes any difference.

I have received my Windows Update notification that Service Pack 3 is ready for me to download. I have not downloaded yet. I have done some extensive research on problems with SP3 and have found a lot of information, much which is not too praising of SP3. However, most of the stuff that I have found on the internet is “older” stuff. I have searched MS data to see what they have posted about SP3 problems. What I am looking for here is has anyone had or know of any problems with SP3 that has been download say in the past three months or so?

Thanks in advance for everyone’s input. Hopefully any input here will not only help me but others who have just recently been notified or have downloaded SP3.

Hello,
I'm having trouble with relative reference. I can't get the macro to work when I add extra rows. I'm attaching a sample sheet. See V 1 for the macros. I can't seem to attach the file with the extention that Excel wants if there are macros in the workbook. I changed the extention to a spreedsheet that doesn't have macros in it and wrote the macros on the sheet.

I have a very large Excel spreadsheet that brings in a data query from a large database. Then there are formulas that calculate based on the data to the right of the data area. However, there is data manually entered in this calculation area, as well. For example, I get product A and its cost, B from the database, I might put margin C for the product in a column and calculate price D for that product in another cell.

Records are added to the database which adds data to the middle of this data area, essentially adding a row in the middle of the data. I highlight the part of the row in the calculation area that I want to move the data down in, then do an insert and tell it to move the data down.

The problem is that from the row where the calculations move down to the bottom of the spreadsheet, the formulas all refer to the data one row above it. So if I insert cells in the calculation section of row 7 and move that data down to row 8, the calculations still refer to row 7 data. So I have to copy the formulas from row 6 down the rest of the spreadsheet to correct all the formulas. So the relative references appear to "stick" to the data they originally referenced, when what I want them to do is always refer to data to their left.

So in the example above I want C and D to move down to row 8 and D to refer to the cost in row 8. But instead, it refers to the B and C in row 7. I know I'll have to manually enter margin into row 7 and maybe even copy the formulas i... Read more

A:Excel formula relative referencing

My first thoughts are (and bearing in mind, you haven't posted an example, so I am unable to evaluate the complexity of the spreadsheet) :-

You click on the row number (7 for example)so that you are selecting the complete row and then click on the menu Insert, Row
You then type the data into the new row and then copy the necessary formulas down from row six to row seven.

or

Select all the necessary cells in row 7 including the formulas and click on the menu Insert, Cells, Shift down Cells OK
You then type the data into the new row and then copy the necessary formulas down from row six to row seven

Hope that works. If not come back and say why not.

If I have designed a fairly extensive website and wish to reorganize my directory tree, some of the relative links will not work because of moved files and folders.

Is there some software that will automatically edit all the relative links given a new directory tree? Or at the very least, is there something that can handle one new directory change at a time?

How do relative hyperlinks work in Access 2007???

We use an Access data base to organize and look up project papers, documents etc. in an digital library where you can click on hyperlinks to open the single documents.

Since we use the data base from different pcs (not online/internet/intranet!), we linked the documents with relative hyperlinks so that everyone can safe the database and docs to his pc and the links will still work once he adjusted the base.

So far so good! Everything worked fine while using MSAccess 2000.

Now we changed to Windows Vista and MSAccess 2007, and all of a sudden, I can not find a way to change the base for a relative hyperlink anymore.
Where is it hiding?

A family member's laptop keeps BSOD-ing on them at random. The DMP before the most recent crash I was able to look at myself with the Debugging Tools for Windows. But the only thing I was able to read was: 'Probably caused by: ntkrnlmp.exe'

That was before I got DM Log to collect everything else from this last crash.
The laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium x64, with a 1.7GHz i5 (3317U I think) and 6GB DDR3 RAM and is mainly used for web browsing and creating text documents.

I recently ran a monthly malware check up on the laptop in between these last 2 crashes. Pretty sure an infection can be ruled out.

I performed a fresh install of Windows 7 on a SSD. Added a bunch of apps, and moved some of the user folders onto a data drive.

Used space on the SSD shows as 65GB
Sum of files and folders (with operating system files unhidden): 51.5GB

1. What accounts for this difference? It's not the hibernation file or paging file because I can see those.
2. I can see hiberfil.sys is taking up 12.5GB. If I don't want to use hibernation, can I get rid of this?

A:Why is my OS installation so large relative to sum of files?

65 GB is way too much.

Yes you can turn off the hiber file, how much is the page file ? How much is system restore taking up ?

It should only be taking up 20 GBs, depending on page file, hiberfile, system restore etc.

Was this a new ssd ? A clean install to a formatted partition or un allocated space ?

Post a shot of disk management if you like, fully expanded.

I've taken advice and checked hosts, disabled add-ons etc and have downloaded TDSSkiller and combofix - ( latter was before i realised it was really for experts!) However I cannot get anything to run - I keep getting "file system error -1073741819 and also with TDSkiller "windows cannot complete the extraction as the destination file could not be created". Consequently whilst I can still connect to the internet ( I'm using google.fr (French) which seems unaffected by redirect)I think the virus has got into the core of my windows settings (it's windows 7)and I can't do anything that might eliminate it. Also everything is painfully slow - so basically if I don't find a fix the computer is pretty useless. I'd be so grateful for any help!!! I have a bulleted list with several levels of indentation, and I would like to add some text - beneath each point in the list - that is always indented a bit to the right of however indented that point is.

Does relative indentation exist in Word 2007? I would ideally like to define a style that indents the selection relative to what is above it, such that, for example, a paragraph that I apply the style to will always be indented 2 cm to the right of the previous paragraph.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Ive been working with computers for a good couple years now, but nothing over Pentium II and I've had my share of breaks, i still dont know as much as most people on this forum. About a month ago i decided i was gonna make a computer worth using, so i gradually accumulated parts, ASUS motherboard(cool n quit, SLI), Athlon X2 4200+ 2.2ghz, 1GB 533mhz DDR2 RAM, 256MB Nvidia GeForce 7600GT(SLI Ready), Ultra X2-Connect 550W power supply w/ UV..etc...etc.

Basically my question is what can i do to this stuff to work it to its potential?

Here's a question that's been bothering me for some time and I was wondering if anyone with a "Kill-a-Watt" or similar device had tested it out -- I'm not looking for a theoretical answer, but rather an empirical one: Are some computer power supplies less efficient than others? Particularly, given the same load in terms of MB, drives and other devices, will a large-capacity PS consume more electricity in converting AC to the various DCVs used by the computer than a lower-capacity PS? The other way around? Are the differences significant?

This question came up most recently in the context of an argument about the costs of running a very stripped-down computer as an external firewall.

As always, thanks for any help!

A:Relative Efficiency of Power Supplies

Based on first principles, a power supply running very lightly loaded is likely to be slightly less efficient than one with moderate load. Running at full load may also see a drop-off in efficiency I suspect.

But as to being a material issue, I doubt it would amount to a significant monetary difference.

Making sure that the PSU is efficient in the first place would be worthwhile however, as standard efficiencies typically range from 74% to 85%, just to compare two common brands. Obviously that would be a significantly bigger factor than the loading. Larger capacity supplies are not necessarily bigger users of power, if their efficiency is better.

And that font is awful to read....

Am searching for an entry-level computer for an elderly relative to replace a PC which has died and is old as one of their elementary school age grandchildren. Relative has basic computer literacy, and needs nothing sophisticated. Any specific new PC models anyone would recommend that fits all of these needs?
1) primary uses - email and moderate Internet browsing.
2) desktop, not laptop.
3) 128MB RAM (ok if more if not add to cost), 80GB disk space or less.
4) price is major consideration - person on fixed income, so ideally under $500.
5) the majority of the PC makers technical support staff is NOT outsourced to a foreign country where representatives are difficult to understand and communicate with. For this reason, not considering Dell products.

A relative of mine asked me to fix their laptop because it was infested with viruses, adware, and was in general running very slow. I took a look at it, ran malwarebytes, spybot search and destroy, CCleaner, and Windows defender scans, found a pile of trojans and stuff like that, removed them, and the computer started running way better and was pretty much clean except for this tricky bastard. No matter how many times you remove the extension from chrome, no matter how many times I run antivirus, no matter how many times I run adwcleaner, JST, etc, the damn adware just keeps coming back. It has no folder, no files, no entry in control panel, no exe that gets detected, no detectable registry keys, yet somehow always comes back every time I restart chrome.  Googling the problem resulted in a massive list of guides posted by software companies trying to get you to use their software, and are usually written like: "Step 1: Download Anvisoft. Step 2: Download this other piece of crap software." The few topics I have actually found that involve someone having their problem solved have had very specific solutions tailored to their very specific case and were of no use to me whatsoever.  I can get whatever logs are needed, please help.

Alright, so I'm not in the United States. At some point the internet decided that parts of Los Angeles County fall outside of our borders. I am less than pleased with this arrangement and would like to remedy it if at all possible.

I get ads in German, I have trouble accessing random websites (I believe this to be related) and on others, most notable being Fox.com I am unable to view content because, as previously noted, this service is only for those living within the United States.

I encounter this with both Firefox and Internet Explorer. I'm running Windows XP. Roadrunner claims that they are aware of the issue, and investigated it and found it to be a problem on the user side of things and not with the connection itself.

My regional settings are all set for the U.S. and as far as I know I haven't installed or change any language settings anywhere either. I'm really rather frustrated and any help or advice you can shoot my way would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

I know this sounds rather dumb of me, maybe I'm just misinterpreting the question, but can't you just copy and paste the created batch file to the new location, sounds like a long way to go to move a file from one place to another, again correct me if you think I've misinterpreted the question

Hi all, hope someone can help.

I have a list of contracts, each run for 3 years exactly.
One starting 12/04/2007 ends: 11/04/2010.

I have the following code:

Code:

Sub Add3Years()
If IsDate(Range("B2")) Then
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = DateAdd("yyyy", 3, Range("B2"))
ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1 = DateAdd("d", -1, ActiveCell.FormulaR1C1)
End If
End Sub

However, as you can see the initial range is as the specific cell B2. What I need is for the macro to see that I am on row 20, goto Column $B on row 20 and use that value instead of
Range("B2")Click to expand...

.

I've tried offsetting, but that doesn't really work, and I've seen
varRowNumber=Activecell.Row will return the row numberClick to expand...

If someone could help join the dots, that would be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hello,

Is there any way to display the dates of files/folders as "today" "yesterday" etc. instead of the full date? Windows only ever displays, for example, "23/10/2014 5:12 pm" regardless of how much I expand the date column. On a Mac, the date changes from the short format to a longer format as the date column is changed, and obviously has the far more user-friendly relative dates. Is it possible to get this behaviour on Windows 7? I'm guessing not, as an internet search for "windows 7 use relative dates" does not bring up anything remotely useful.

Thanks,

Paul

A:Display relative dates in Windows 7 folders

These are two different issues. One is the display mode of the date, and the other ("relative") is a data element.

For the 'display mode' of the date, you can set it for dates displayed in Windows Explorer in Preferences. I don't beleive dynamic display is an option.

Windows has the ability to display the "Last Updated" date. But then you'd have to know today's date to calculate the 'relative' date (oh, the horror).

How can I refer to a cell in an Excel spreadsheet three to the left of the current cell ? I want to perform a calculation which remains valid even when I insert a column between the original data and the column which contains the calculation. Perhaps an example makes this clear:
. A B C
1 5 3 8
2 3 9 12
Column C is adding the contents of the two columns to the left of it. I now want to add a new column (for illustration here named Z), and without altering column C, have column C remain as the sum of the two columns to its immediate left:
. A B Z C
1 5 3 6 9
2 3 9 1 10

This topic is not for general argument about the merits of Win8 and Win7. It also is not about what one should emphasize in forming a preference for Win8 or Win7. The topic also is not about the traits or personalities of those that post on our forums or their strong and weak points.

This topic deals only with the relative efficiency of Win8 and Win7 in performing specified tasks. I am hoping that you will identify a task and attempt to assess the relative efficiency of Win8 and Win7 in performing the task. I suggest that you assume a single user and ignore the extra step in getting to the Win8 start screen (three steps--for example, power up, bypass first screen, and sign in) versus getting to the Win7 desktop (2 comparative steps--power up and sign in). I am starting the relative efficiency analysis by considering the simple task below. Assume the task begins on the desktop for Win7 and on the metro start screen for Win8. Throughout, for simplicity, I hope that you will work with efficiency as I have done for consistency--essentially defining efficiency in terms of steps.

(1) In Win7 (starting on the desktop) (see second edit below), if I want to open a recent file in Word 2013 and subsequently open a recent file in Excel 2013, then I click on a Word taskbar shortcut and then click the file name on the Word start screen (2 steps). I then do the same with Excel (2 steps). Total steps = 4.

(2) Under Win8 (starting on the metro start screen), if I want to do the same thing... Read more

You can still vote.

But, if you have no reasonable basis for selecting a response in this poll then please do not participate. If you selected a response without a reasonable basis, then please take your vote back. Note that having a reasonable basis for making an assessment about relative ease of understanding how Windows 8 works relative to other Win OS?s requires adequate familiarity with only one Windows OS besides Windows 8. I require a forced choice between liking and disliking Windows 8 for obvious reasons.

I think this poll is mostly self explanatory. There is a great deal of discussion about why individuals react to Windows 8 as they do. For example, a commonly expressed idea is that many don't like Windows 8 because they don't understand how it works. So, I want to gather some quantitative information about whether you like or dislike Windows 8 and how you feel about the relative easy in understanding how Windows 8 works compared to other Windows operating systems (OS's).

A:Relative Ease in Understanding How Windows 8 Works

What poll?

You also need to make polls more expansive. If you don't want people to participate, then include an option that says something like "I don't have a basis for making a commnet".

Like, with your $40 upgrade poll, there is only two options. One for people that used it, and the other is "Windows 8 isn't for me", this assumes that people either used the $40 upgrade or didn't upgrade at all. There are many other options. So a third option of "I used another means to upgrade" would have been appropriate.

The point is, you don't get the results you're looking for, you only get results within some tiny frame of how you posed the question.

One critical customization needed is the ability to disable relative hyperlinks by default, or uncheck the "Update links on Save" checkbox under Word Options --> Advanced --> Word Options.

This is not an option through the patch file, and it was previously available through a registry fix for Office 10 and 11. Does anyone know the registry key that needs to be modified/added, or another way of doing this globally? This is an XP/2003 environment.

I am working in an educational setting with students using MS Word 2007 on a variety of operating systems. As part of their course work, they prepare reports summarizing various court and other proceedings. These reports contain footnotes with citation to source documents, sometimes websites, sometimes pdf documents. When they turn in their reports, they also turn in the pdf documents, usually all on a USB thumb drive, sometimes all burnt onto a CD/DVD. (The reports look sort of like a wiki -- but the links are not to other wiki pages, they are out to the web or to the companion source documents). The reports are then shared with others who critique and comment upon them.

The problem is with portability. While it is easy to set up this report and its companion pdf files in a seperate folder on their desktop, when they e-mail the package to someone else or when they take the files from someone else's flash drive and put it on their computer, the links all stop responding.

I know why this is happening -- the file path on the new computer to the files is different than the one from the old computer that was captured in the hyperlink. My question is, can't something be done so that the hyperlink to the pdf document is saying, essentially, don't go all the way to the root and follow the path to this document and open it, rather look around your immediate environment in this folder and find the document named x and open it.

I know that is not too well phrased in t... Read more

A:Solved: Portable or Relative Hyperlinks to PDF Source Documents

Not really (well, not really...there is a difference.) The whole point of a hyperlink is to go to a specific location. Rather, it would be simpler to make the students have all the documents they wish to link to in a special folder that they will all have to create, called, say, C:\linked documents - Everyone has a C drive; just make the students make a folder called linked documents there and put the files they wish to link to in there. (Even better would be to have them link to a network folder that everyone had access to.)

(In theory you could have some code that would search the machine for the user name and have a hyperlink created that included the user name, etc. but the file would still need to be in the same location - say, C:\Documents and Settings\[username]\Desktop\linked documents. You also could search for all the files with a certain name using VBA and have the VBA create hyperlinks to those files, but that is not what you are trying to do here, is it?)

It's instead something like:

The noise seems to be relevant to system load as moving a mouse or scrolling a webpage slide makes it a bit louder, also the noise can be clearly followed by hdd indicator or just adding a dvd.. Once i had windows 7 32bit installed and old headset used to crackle the same way as new headphones does now on 64bit os, however old headset is working fine on 64bit now.. (completelly silent once idle unlike headphones).

Ive tested new headphones on cellphone and win xp 32bit (not this machine) and it is working fine there, it seems that issue is not within device.

I tend to believe its a bad placed/isolated hardware issue as sound chip is very close to the main fan and gpu and maybe its just extended new headphones frequency range so i can hear it unlike the headset. (bonus freq: 10-20 & 20k-22k Hz) Is there some output software frequency limiter around, so i could test if thats the problem?

In an Excel spreadsheet I have a spinner in cell D4 controlling numbers from 1 to 5; these are located in cell C4. This works fine - no problem.
However I need about 50 of these spinners in various places in this sheet, and I cannot work out how to copy them to different locations so that each one controls the cell to its left. As it stands, wherever I copy to, the new spinner will still control cell C4.
Copying means that I only have to size the first spinner, and I felt sure that right-clicking on the spinner, followed by Format Control > Cell link, and removing the $ symbols would allow it to work on the new relative cell, but it doesn't. Whatever I do, it still changes the value in C4.

Hello there,

Tile wallpapers do not behave the same way they did on Windows 7.

I often move from place to place with different second monitors, sometimes on my left and other times on my right.

To have different wallpapers on my screens, I used to have a tile wallpaper 3580*1200 (my main screen is 1600*900 and my second screen can be up to 1980*1200).
This way, as wallpaper was relative to my top left main screen on Windows 7, I always have the same wallpaper on the main screen, and the second wallpaper cropped from 1980*1200 to the actual screen size.

I hope you followed me till there, kinda hard to explain...
Now, on Windows 10, the tile wallpaper is relative to the top left corner of the top left screen, so if my second screen is on the right, everything is fine, but if my second screen is on the left, everything is screwed up.

Is there any tweak to set the tile wallpaper relative to top left MAIN screen on Windows 10?
Or maybe do you know a built-in way to maintain different wallpapers across screens?

Cheers

This one has been discussed before but the thread expired and the answer suggested do not work for my situation.

Please consider the following in suggested response:

The conditional formatting being used is the icon set and the values that determine what icon will be applied (the criteria values) are located in a different row / column from the cell where the conditional format is to produce the result (the formatting). When using the icon set, excel requires an absolute value to be used =$A$5 as an example for a cell reference. If you try to remove the $ the program says "cannon use relative references in conditional formatting criteria for color scale, databars and icon set.

As such, when I try to copy and paste the conditional formatting to the row or column of data that I want it to apply to, it does not change the target condition as it is still aimed at $a$4 as an example, even with dragging it over the area and applying it.

I have tried paste special etc. and that does not help either.

It appears that MS requires absolute values because they did not think to make relative values an option.

Does anyone know a solution of how to apply my conditional formatting using the icon set to an entire row where a cell reference is used for the value as the criteria for the formatting?

Thanks

hi can anyone help please, i can't seem to get the case statements to work, this might be due to the variables?
this is my code:

System.out.println ("A Apple");
System.out.println ("B Blueberry");

Hello wise ones,

I often have guests staying w/ me from around the world that I know little about other than intuition, what is on their profile and written references from other hosts. Through www.couchsurfing.com

I am very concerned letting them use my PC as they may download a virus or install a key logger. (Kapersky is installed and shows up under the guest identity on XP. But I think perhaps they could turn it off and bypass it?)

What would be the best way to allow them computer access?

1. Get an old PC for them to use? (if they are on my router can they access my other PC's personal information? If so how do I limit them from accessing my PC info?)

2. Install a software program like used at a Internet Cafe?

Any other ideas?

Kind Thanks!

Hi, thought I'd see if all is well on the folk's PC, since I'm not up close and personal with it like this often. For one thing I think the google toolbar entries are different than they are on other machines I have it on. (Mainly want to make sure nothing sinister is going on, but would also be interested in shutting off everything that can be. For example I did install Windows Messenger and enable Remote Assistance since we are going to try that when the need arises after I leave again, but assume I should figure out how to keep Windows Messenger from being on all the time. It's not enabled in msconfig or anything.)

Here's their log. We all thank you!

Hello all,
I am having a problem with all of the browsers on my computer directing to a spam search site when I try to visit certain websites.

I believe the problem started when I installed this software to help me switch audio output very easily:
http://www.sevenforums.com/customization/65079-anyway-use-hotkeys-switch-sound-output.html

I've done the following:
1) Run updated Malware bytes Anti Malware
2) Run TDSS Rootkit Remover Tool by Kaspersky.
3) Run Virus Remover Tool by Kaspersky.
4) Reset my cookies in Chrome.
5) Read the "Before posting a log" on this forum (the sticky post).
6) Updated my notification options as recommended.
I could not run GMER as I'm running Windows 7 64 bit.

I've attached my DDS/Attach/Hijack logs.

I was looking at our internet history and there are several sites on there and it seems no one is claiming visiting them. I want to believe that no one has been on these sites but I don't see any other way for them to appear on our internet history without someone viewing the site? Any ideas on how these got on there? Any possible way at all other than viewing the site....please, please help me. My trust and my marriage is potentially on the line here. I am looking for answers and I cannot think of anything, other than the worst. Any viruses or sites that hack into your computer and upload this stuff to your history, I know I'm grasping but I need answers. Please any thoughts at all?

The other day I was just following some links to a couple of sites, one was free6.com and the other nudeamateurhoes.com and now I have a weird icon on my taskbar. The icon itself says curse when moused over but has no way to exit the icon like the others on my task-bar.

Anyone every experience this problem and is it related to the sites or did I get it some other way.

Btw I did manage to find it and it in my programs folder and it is called curse.exe but when I try to delete it I am told I dont have access rights or something like that to delete this file.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have a smc router, and sometimes i need to change the ip address on my dmz zone to connect to xbox live games (or it takes forever to get into games). anyway, since yesterday i can't get into the devices webpage to change my settings, everytime i try it just keeps the "internet explorer cannot display webpage".
so im wondering if there is another way to change these settings? or why is it saying that? we had a storm yesterday so I figured maybe its down due to that, but i can't imagine it not being fixed as of yet.
thanks in advance.

A:is there a way to get into my router without visiting the webpage?

we had a storm yesterday so I figured maybe its down due to that,Click to expand...

It may have damaged the router
you could try resetting the router - there will be a reset button on the back, this will take it back to factory condition, however, that will mean resetting all the settings, and if it resets and still will not let you log into the router, then you will probably no longer have any internet access, as you can not set this up....

If you have the Setup CD that may have come with the router - you maybe able to access the settings via setup CD.

I'm usually a lot smarter than this.. but I read someones post in a forum about how a website has set up a popular game, San Andreas Multiplayer, in a frame that remotes a machine so you can play in the browser. The game is a bit more involved than a typical browser game, so of course i figured it would be unplayable at best, but curiosity got the best of me and I visited the site.I immediately figured out that it was just a video of someone logging into a server, and i was most likely being infected while watching.. I checked around and saw some minimal info about the site including this post:http://www.gtaforums.com/index.php?showtopic=538035The site I visited was: www, sampfreeonline,tk .. which points to: samponlinefree, orq,pl(dots were replaced with commas so no one clicks by accident)Can anyone verify if this is indeed a malicious site.. I'm thinking I have a keylogger installed now and its just waiting for me to join a server... ..or even worse..Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

I am trying to figure out why I cannot send out emails while I am visiting family. I have access to the internet and can receive emails without problem, but I cannot send out messages, even though I have confirmed that my outgoing email settings are correct. I can send out emails when I am at home and accessing my home network wirelessly, but when I visit family, I cannot send out emails. I am using a laptop with Vista and all of the current Windows updates and am using Outlook 2007 for email. My mom has the same problem when she comes to my house though. Her email works perfectly at home, but when she comes to my house and uses my network, she can receive email, but not send. Any thoughts?

A:can receive, not send out when visiting friends

If the person you are visiting has different ISP than you, you will have to connect to that ISP's network in order to send mail with an email client.

You can check with YOUR ISP to find out what settings you need to change OR see if is an FAQ which will guide you through configuring the client for use when traveling OR you can use your ISP web mail.

Hi!

Today, while  visiting a website with IE, I suddenly got a new window which contained a message from "NSA+ FBI" ( or smthg like that), telling me that I am at risk of being thrown to jail for the next 5-7 years unless I pay a fine of about 150$ either with my credit card or by buying some sort of prepaid phone cards. It was imposible for me to close the window or to use CTRL+ ALT+DEL so as to close it from Task Manager. So, I shut down the computer from the start menu.

After restarting it, the internet works much slower.

Since then, I ran a quick scan with my Security Essentials (updated right before starting the scan), which lasted for about 70 minutes (!!!) but found nothing . I have also performed a scan using Microsoft's Safety Scanner, which returned the result that there are no unwanted programs on my computer.

But if no unwanted software is on my computer, then how come did I got that screen asking me for money on behalf of CIA/ FBI.. etc... ?????

Thank you

I have a:
Gateway laptop Gateway Laptop
MX6433
AMD Turion 64 mobile
Technology ML-30
1.59 GHz, 448 MB of RAM
Windows XP Media Center edition (service pack 3).

I bought it two years or so ago. Since as long as I can remember I have had this problem.

when I am on my browser (I use chrome, firefox, and IE) my wireless connection will cut out after a while. I have noticed that if I am on just one site (example: Pandora.com) it can be fine for hours. But once I start going to different sites, I eventually get kicked off. It can be any website, Facebook, youtube, etc.

When I lose connectivity, I refresh my wireless connections and only the printer comes up. If I try to right click on the tray icon to repair internet connection, it freezes. I am guessing that this is a hardware problem. (?) Though I'm not extremely technical with computers, I know my way around most issues that can arise.

I have reformatted my hard drive (twice) and all my software is up to date. I have run AVG scan and Ad Aware scan hundreds of times. Can anyone offer assistance? Thank you very much!

?I understand now, but I'm not sure I can help. It may be a security setting, but I also fear it may be malware. I might start with lowering your security (if you're comfortable) and a virus scan?

I have no virus, at least not one that Norton product can detect, my security setting is set at a medium setting. I do not use any other browser.

I would appreciate any help you can provide me. Thanks.

Hello,

So I've always wondered if you can get a virus/malware just by visiting a website?

I always thought this was a No, because I believe a user is only infected when he/she opens up that malware/virus FILE, once you open it up and install it then you are infected.

I know there are drive by downloads, but your anti-virus or anti-malware program should detect the file and automatically delete it.

Malware/virus can't infect your computer unless you open the file, right?

A:can you get a virus/malware just by visiting a website?

Hi NEMS Yes, it's entirely possible to get infected by simply visiting a website. Most commonly via what we call "Exploit Kits". Right now, EK are used to deliver a lot of dangerous malware (such as banking trojans and Cryptoware) to computers worldwide. So using a standard Antivirus and Antimalware won't cut it. Using a program that protects your web browser against such threats, like Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit will. but your anti-virus or anti-malware program should detect the file and automatically delete it.This is assuming that the file pushed on your system is already known to your Antivirus or Antimalware (in its database). If it's not, it won't do anything. And we all know that no products have a 100% detection ratio.Edit: For more information on Exploit Kits and how they work, see the article below.Tools of the Trade: Exploit Kits

Greetings from Finland!

Thanks for a very useful page!

After a visit on a warez-page the weirdest things happened to my computer..
Luckily, it seems like most of them are gone now, thanks to this page! I found the program HijackThis and were able to get
rid of some annoying stuff, for instance that "http://ehttp.cc/?". What is that by the way?

One thing is still bothering me though and believe that's because of the same warez-page. It's kind of strange acctually...
Some pages (for instance http://www.suprnova.org/ and http://www.aftonbladet.se/) started to run REALLY slow! And it doesn't
seem to have anything to do with the internet connection itself; when i check Task Manager-->Performance-->CPU Usage, it's¨
like 100%! Despite I don't do anything!
What is the problem and moreover, how do I fix it? Would it help you if I posted one of those "hijack-logs"?

Thanks in advance!

Hello all, I'm new at this so please excuse any mistakes.

Over the past two weeks, I've received occasional virus warnings when I go to Foxnews.com.
Avast warns me about "http://iwqoxiaw.info/ng/pdf.php" and provides a name of: JS:Pdfka-BG.
This has not happened on any other websites.

I'm running XP Pro, Avast virus, and Zone Alarm.

I'm a bit concerned as I can't find any info about this that I understand and was wondering if anyone could help.

I've attached the "attach.txt file and a hijack this log.

Thanks in advance.

We recently added a filter to our computer because of our children. Each week we get a report on sites that we attempted to be opened, but are blocked. There are several, but one in particular is on there all the time and has a high percentage. I am wondering if anyone recognizes it and if it is possible that somehow there is something on our computer that is automatically leading us there. We have not gone to it ever as far as I know.

It is: eserviceds1x.us.dell.com

We have both AdAware SE and Spybots and run them regularly.

Hi MNgirl,

1° Download LSPFix from http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm .

2° Create a permanent folder like C:\Program Files\LSP and extract the download zip file into that folder.

3° Log your computer in safe mode (hit F8 many times during booting procedure);

4° Disable your System Restore : have a look to Disabling or enabling Windows XP System Restore ;

5° Close all open windows - it is very important;

6° Run LSPFix : click only the Fix button;

7° Reboot normally and post a new HijackThis log.

I am attaching the relevant zip file.

I am rephrasing the question to be more specific. I cannot see how my first request was inappropriate. I have not needed to set up a network in years, so I hope someone has the answer to my question.

I am paying for my home internet, and I do not want anyone visiting pron websites. Is their any tool that can alert me if one of my friends is accessing inappropriate material on the website. Someone closed my question before, so I guess knowing how to share their internet histories is NOT the proper answer.

I will not stand for people looking at bad websites, so I hope someone can point me to a decent solution.

Hi all. Ive been battling this issue for a few days now. whenever i visit sites such as myspace or espn.com, when im either searching around on the sites my computer will lock up. i can hear it processing information as if it were getting sent massive amounts of information, yet when i check the sites on another computer in my house i dont have these issues. i tried disabling javascript and it worked for part of the problem, but when i started to search the website further, i encountered the issue again. This occurs with both internet explorer and firefox, and my flashplayer and windows media player are both updated. ive searched my computer with spybot and adaware.

Try reseting you security permissions. Goto tool > internet options > security tab. Click on default level, then set it to low hit apply, then move it right back to medium and hit apply. This will put it back to microsoft recommended settings. let us know if that works.

I think this is the website where the malware came from, but I'm not sure. I've included the URL here, in case it helps someone figure out what my problem is.

I didn't click on any of the advertisements or install any new programs or download any files. But within 5 minutes of my visiting the page, popups began to rapidly show up. I usually use FireFox, but they were coming from Internet Explorer. They were coming very fast- maybe 20 within as many seconds, so I unplugged my wireless router and forcibly disconnected my computer from the internet.

I used another computer to look up tutorials on how to get rid of a malware problem, and downloaded recommended programs. I also edited the registry myself and deleted registry keys that were obviously associated with the malware that hadn't been there before (named things like "vvxxasjdfdsf.exe" and such) but this malware is obviously beyond my limited expertise, because it is still there.

My computer hasn't been connected to the internet since. (I'm using a different computer to post here.)

When the computer's on, Internet Explorer attempts to connect to the internet every few minutes. For the first few minutes where I didn't realize I had a problem, I'm pretty sure it connected to more malware sites and downloaded more crap onto my computer. Spybot seems to have gotten almost everything, except for the very stubborn root problem, which Spybot says is "Smitfraud.C"

I am currently working on a spreadsheet for a complex budget, and the spreadsheet is constantly expanding by way of additional columns (a new column for each day).

At the end of the columns that represent each day, there are five columns that show calculations based on the entries in the columns that are before them. One of those columns calculates the average of every entry in that row. In the sixth column, we want to be able to calculate the average of the last four day entries without having to manually adjust the range each time we expand the spreadsheet.

That's probably not particularly clear, so in summary, we have a column for every day of the last twelve months. Each cell shows a dollar amount. At the end of each row, we have five columns that display various calculations for each row. At the end of those calculations, we want a further calculation that will show us only the previous four days.

Needless to say, every time we add a column for a new day, the range (showing the average of the previous four days) expands to show the average for the last five days. Rather than this happening, we need the range to move forward, rather than expanding, essentially following the cell at the end of the row that shows the average of those four days.

In essence, we need a cell to calculate the average of four cells that are five cells behind it, without ever expanding its field of reference.

Apologies if this description isn't particularly helpful...it's a dif... Read more

Hello,

I am running a P4 Q6600 with Windows XP SP2. I use Firefox, just updated to 12, and have AVG 2012 loaded
(unfortunately, it lists my current AVG Safe Search as incompatible with Firefox 12).
I went to a legitimate business website, and apparently the website has been recently hijacked because
instead of the expected content (that was in the Google cache), an illegitimate-appearing virus warning
appeared in the browser window. I closed the window, but found thereafter that when visiting google.com with Firefox,
Firefox always said it was "Connecting to 213.174.137.82...". This is my main symptom. I didn't observe
this on other intact computers, but I found others on BleepingComputer that had infections associated
with this address (such as http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic445802.html, but with slightly different
symptoms -- Google seems to work okay for many searches in my case). I don't perceive significant slowing,
but strangely after running DDS and GMER for a while, my mouse stopped working (I plugged in another one
and it worked for a short while but also stopped) and I started getting delayed write errors. Upon rebooting, the computer
seems to work okay but it still displays the "Connecting to 213.174.137.82..." message with Firefox browsing google.com.

Ok, I'm at wit's end. So I gotta ask for help.
I use IE7 browser and I'm getting the Sysfader error
whenever I visit Google Video, and of course the
browser goes down. This has only started happening,
I guess past six weeks or so. The Sysfader error does not
happen on any other video site, even youTube, just
Google Videos.

I've done all the troubleshooting and searched
everywhere for a solution. So I know the following
info.

- It's got nothing to do with nVidia card thingy.
I got all ATI stuff and a REAL-TEK sound card.

-Under my System Performance in Control Panel,
all the scrolling and fade effects are turned off
(not checked) And I thought that's what the Sysfader
thing was, but that's not it, still happening.

-I've disabled all the IE7 Add-ons except "cookies"
and the "Adobe Shockwave flash Active-x" cause the
videos won't play without it, but all other add-ons
have been disabled to see if that helped.
And restarted the browser and rebooted etc.

So, that's all I could find. And I'm stuck.

Okay, I just made it do it....I went
to Google Video, did a search on "Jordan Maxwell",
videos come up, I click on one, it tries to open up
in a separate window, then the error box pops up:

I know that they are not visiting these sites personally, so, there has to be some malware/adware that is causing it. I also learned today that there are a number of popups, probably related to these sites.

The websites are:

msn.com yahoo.com, foxsports.com, youtube.com, yimg.com, microsoft.com, facebook.com, gamevance.com, conduitservices.com
Also - it has been running slower as of late.

Thanks for the help.
