IE8 not opening up suggested sites

Q: IE8 not opening up suggested sites

Hello - I am using IE8 Windows 7, and lately whenever I google something, and find what I am looking for - when I click on the suggested site - the new screen stays blank.

In exasperation I opened up Mozilla Firefox and I had no problem opening the suggested page that I had previously googled.

Can anyone help please?

If you right click in the top bar you can uncheck the Favorites bar, but also via Tools - Internet options - Advanced - in the Browsing section, ensure that the box for Enable Suggested Sites is also unchecked - Apply - OK

No matter how often I say "No" to "Suggested sites" in IE 8 (Windows 7) it keeps coming back and hogging my taskbar. Is there a way I can shoot this thing so it stays dead?

Hello !! Welcome to SF !!

I guess the IE is messed up resulting this behaviour. The best thing to do would be to reset IE to default settings then try to turn off suggested sites might fix it.

Tools | Internet Options | Advance | Reset

Hope this helps,

Another day, another pointless and waste of my life ie11 problem.
What is it today?  enterprise mode? Activex? nope, suggested sites.
Tell me why every user has 100s of suggested site links adding to their favourites bar? Also why are all of them empty. Just 100s of empty favourites called suggested sites.

How does this software get released.
This is the same in windows 10 as well, so don't come with that non sense about it being a windows 7 problem.

At least in windows 10 ie11 doesn't need 10 broken prerequsties and another 10 cumulative updates before it works correctly.

I have unchecked the Enable Suggested Sites feature in Tools > Advanced > Browsing.
Yet, IE 10 keeps suggesting web sites to my while I'm typing web addresses into the address bar.
How can I reliably disable this behaviour? I don't want to feed search engine robots.

A:How can I disable Suggested Sites feature in IE 10?

How can search from the address bar be disabled?

In the Manage Add-ons Search Providers dialog you could disable Search Suggestions for your default search provider and optionally uncheck:  Search from the Address bar.   Related to this from the Options Contents tab you could
navigate to Autocomplete Settings and uncheck Use AutoComplete for Address bar.   I think it is probably Search Suggestions that is bothering you the most but you might not be liking the AutoComplete for Address bar feature too.  Otherwise
I think disabling Search from the Address bar means that you can't use the IE search feature at all, even trying an explicit question mark space (? ) prefix, which I think is more drastic than one might expect.  Disabling Search from the
Address bar also has the quirky effect of forcing the feature of allowing single-word Intranet names to be used without a protocol prefix, which is otherwise needed to bypass the user's default search provider when such connections are slow.

I want to infect me. This thing seems strange or crazy, but I would like to see how some malware behaves and also so that I can try to remove them. I need tips to infect me and sites that I can collect malware to analyze them (or rather, try to analyze them).

In the study of malware, need to keep me motivated and I do not infect me, I will not be motivated to learn how to remove infections.

I appreciate any help, and if they can not post links malware here, for obvious reasons, send me MP.

Note: Excuse me for the bad english, I used Google translator.

One of the primary goals of Bleeping Computer is to assist victims of infection with removal and to prevent the spread of malicious programs, not encourage them. Therefore, we will not provide links to malware or malicious sites where infections have been contracted and spread. Others reading this topic may use the information for nefarious purposes or an unwitting novice user may accidentally click a link and end up infecting their computer. For those and other obvious reasons, we are not going to provide specific information in a public forum and by policy, we don't provide assistance via PM. However, you can perform a Google search on "how to infect your computer on purpose" which will provide information such as this article. You can also read this topic which explains the most common ways malware is contracted and identifies the types of sites where you can easily get infected by not following the advice provided to protect yourself. If your intention is to infect a VM for the purposes of testing, be aware that not all malware will work in that environment. Malware writers have been able to create malicious files which can detect if it is running in a VM. When that detection is made, the malware is able to change its behavior by not running any malicious code which can infect the operating system. This is a deliberate technique to make analysis/detection more difficult for security researchers who use VMs to study infections in order to understand the methodology used and f... Read more

I am running windows xp pro sp3 with IE8. I have tried everything to try and remove the Bing browser and it keeps returning no matter what I do.
Does anyone have a fix for this.
Thanks in advance.

A:how to permanently remove Bing and Suggested Sites

EDIT: I just remembered something where you may not have to do any of the below. I never use IE so it slipped my mind. Go into IE's options, programs, manage add-ons. Right click any crap you see there and remove it if possible or disable it if removing is not an option. I would still go to add or remove programs and see if there's any crap there.

Well, try going into add or remove programs and uninstall IE8 and any other entry with Bing or MSN. You will have to reboot afterwards and will be back to IE6. Download Internet Explorer 8 and install it. This is the original version without all that crap. When installing, have it download updates. When finished you will be asked to reboot. Go to Windows Update and run a scan to make sure everything is up to date.

To disable suggested sites, first back up your registry by following the instructions below.

Please visit http://www.larshederer.homepage.t-online.de/erunt/, download and install/unzip ERUNT. Run ERUNT, click OK at the Welcome dialog, accept the default values that are pre-filled in and pre-checked, click OK, click yes and OK when it's done.
To restore the backup at a later date, navigate to the ERDNT folder in your Windows directory, open the folder with the date you want to restore from and then click ERDNT.EXE. It will restore your registry but it needs to reboot to do so. When it asks you to do so, click yes.

Once you've backed up the registry, merge the attached reg file by double clicking ... Read more

I have Windows XP and use Firefox 3.0.11 as my preferred browser, though the problem occurs while using IE8 as well.

While browsing, a series of new windows will open automatically. They are new, full sized windows (as opposed to small pop ups) and are usually for dating sites, various ad sites (horoscopes, who has a crush on you type stuff) and the search site www.icanseek.com (complete with random"pre-programmed" search results). I know I'm infected, it's the "What do I do" part that I'm after!

I believe it is some form of malware, but I'm not sure what I'm dealing with (not a computer expert, that's why I'm here!)

I have tried the following Anti Spyware/Malware programs in an attempt to remedy the problem:

MalwareBytes' Anti Malware
AdAware
SUPERAntiSpyware
Spybot Search and Destroy
Spyware Doctor
AVGFree 8.5
Windows Bit Defender

All were the free versions. I shut down and restarted the computer after EACH scan. (This has taken me a few days.)

Most of the programs found and healed/deleted/dealt with several "infections" but none actually fixed the problem.

On another forum I read that this may not be a simple malware issue, and that it is possibly attached to a larger application or program installed on my computer. Possible sources listed were www.DesktopSmiley.com and something called System Search Dispatch. I found a program called System Search Dispatch in my add/remove programs list. It w... Read more

Hey All,

I created this thread that can hopefully serve as a FAQ about these new features of IE 8, how they work, how they are the same and different. I have modified my Favorites Bar to remove the Suggested Sites icon, because I personally don't care to have recommended sites downloaded when IE is not running and IE 8 gives an "Are you sure?" as to whether or not you want to turn "Suggested Sites On." I am just learning the +'s and -'s of these new features.

If any users want to give an overview, positives, negatives, or personal experiences with these new features or ask questions about them, please post here, Thanks for your help!

Ive been having this problem for awhile now, and it is a growing frustration for me. For some reason, certain aspects of microsoft related websites will not open for me. The main two ive noticed are microsoft downloads and zuneboards.com. I can browse microsoft downloads, but whenever i try to download a file it takes me to a "this page cannot be displayed" error. This happens no matter where i attempt to download the file from, be it the microsoft download center website, a direct download link (go.microsoft.com/...), or from another site (such as a download from the zune site. I am also having troubles with zuneboards.com. I can see the other zune sites, but for some reason every time I attempt to access this site I get the page cannot be dispayed error. This goes for all links to within zuneboards.com as well. I am totally confused on what could be causing this, it seems like a peculiar error. I have been having the problem for awhile, and with various links/files, so i know its not just a temporary issue with the site being down or something. My computer is pretty bogged down, perhaps there is some level of spyware/malware doing something strange that i havent been able to find with my limited protection (avg free, lavasoft). Any help would be greatly appreciated, and let me know if i can do anything to help (HJT log or whatever). Thanks again

Hello, Recently I just installed AVG 9.0 (from a bittorrent site, yes I know, I know) and after completing the installation my browser is either slowwwww or a tab will open up to a new website. I've ran Windows Defender, Spybot, removed that AVG suite and installed Avira free edition and my firewall is on. But still nothing is happening. I did notice while using super utilities spydoctor that it says that I have hotbar but It's not in my program features to remove it. Now as far as my computer performance without using a browser, it's still great but once I get on the internet pages load slowly after the first url pops up. So here are my logs dds/ark.txt/attach.txt.Windows 7 spybotMalewarebytesAvira Free editionOkay I finally solved this problem which I should have done this in the beginning. So I went into safe mode and ran Spybot, found a few cookies that were tracking = ok, Antimalware didn't find anything hmmmm = ok and then finally ran the micrsoft security essentials and found the virus win32/alueron so I'm good now, no more redirecting tabs...Thanks and you can mark this as solved!!!

I would be grateful for any assistance you can offer about a problem which has developed on my laptop.
When connected to the internet I get a regular quantity of unrequested webites opening at random, some of which are definitely websites I don't want to view. They are sometimes associated with an error message saying MAHelper has stopped working and Windows closes the site down.
I am running an HP G70 laptop with Vista Home Premium 32 bit SP2 with Avast antivirus. The PC is mainly used for work activities (document authoring) with a bit of internet access for emails and hobbies.
Thanks for any help you can offer
Regards
Steve

Hello it appears you have picked up at least a browser hijacker. I am moving this from Vista to the Am I Infected forum as you are.Hello and welcome please run these next. If you have Spybot installed temporarily disable it.Next run ATF:Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune & save it to your desktop.Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.Click the Empty Selected button. If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select AllClick the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt. If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select AllClick the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):NOTE: Before saving MBAM please rename it to zztoy.exe....now save it to your desktop. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.alternate download link 2MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing IE not to open PHP sites. I own a few sites and they open fine but the foums to them do not open. Also I have a few photobucket accounts and they don't open either, and there PHP.

What I mena by not opening is, it will go to the site and say done in the status bar but just hang there on a white blank page. I have done everything I could think of, including resetting IE, reloading IE, spyware removal with spybot, spysweeper, Ad-Aware, CWshredder, LSPFix, Bug Doctor, and ewido security suite. I now have the cleanest system on the internet but still can't open PHP sites.

I can however open these sites with firefox, but rather use IE seeing firefox does not show style.css pages and is not compatible with some sites.

Does anyone know why this could be happening. Here is what HiJackThis picked up, anyone know what's going on here.

Hi! Just want to start when this problem started.
I usually leave my computer alone for when I am downloading big Steam games.
But yesterday when I came back I noticed that my computer restarted, "No biggie" must have been a Power outage or something.
I opened up Google Chrome and here is what I got:

http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/815/6232012114647am.jpg/

This only happens to Google sites. Facebook, Yahoo etc are not affected.

I tried using the common anti-viruses AVG, Spybot and MalawareBytes here is what I got:

Hi there - Good evening - I hope you can help - I am very 'non tech' !

SP is AOL. Using Netgear Router DG834GT.

I have two laptops - XP and Vista. On both laptops when I go into Internet Explorer I am unable to make connection with most of the web sites that I have used frequently in the past, particularly those that were in my IE 'Favourites'. This happens either when I click the 'Favourite' name in the list or when I type the www address in the address bar. All other web pages open normally. Having said that all the players like the BBC i player, ITV player etc do open normally even though I use them a lot and have them as 'Favourites'.

I have no problem opening any websites using AOL.
I have run Virus checks on both computers (Norton on XP and McAffee on Vista). No problems.

I can't say how long this has been happening as I haven't used IE for a while apart from the BBC i player and other players.

I hope I have made this query clear. It is a bit of a mystery as to why this affects both computers.

I have checked the 'Diagnostics' thingy which comes up when webpage won't open and it says there is no problem with connectivity.

I was wondering whether it had anything to do with IE 8 ?

Would love to hear from you, and thank you for your time.

Hi, need your help, please.
Was working online while travelling and hit by something called windows xp recovery .
Had to try a system restore in order to get my work finished in time. My document - folders - disappeared after the restore but found them hidden.
Now my internet is redirecting to odd sites. Also have a pop up from something else called xpnetdiag.exe showing up, that I haven't seen before. It actually popped up during dds scan.

I had to turn on most filters again, ie pop up blocker ie. Maybe due to restore?
But noticing that Default IE browser does not hold at times if I restart system.
Ran Symantec and malwarebytes, but found nothing, ughh:(
here are my logs, and thanks, SS.

A:Hit by virus now IE opening wrong sites

Hi sspring,

Welcome to TSF.

1. Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Place combofix.exe on your Desktop
2. Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
You can get help on disabling your protection programs here

3. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
Note: Windows Vista users will have to right-click on the file and select "Run as Administrator"

4. As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed.

Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

The Windows recovery console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery mode that allows us to help you in the case that your computer has a problem after an attempted removal of malware.

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal.

Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement.

ComboFix will now automatically install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console onto your computer, which will show ... Read more

Hi I have some sort of infection on my laptop. Gave it to my Dad for half an hour and he managed to get it on there - impressed (NOT).Symptoms are that when I'm browsing (I use Firefox), random new windows, sometimes in Firefox and sometimes in IE, open up showing advertisments that are clearly unrelated to the site I am visiting. It happens even when I'm on our own intranet web pages. Sometimes I am seeing 10 or so new windows opening simultaneously. An example of the URL it opens is:http://zustaus.com/r_cmtp?u=http%3A%2F%2Fg...&rid=753215I'm running Symantec Antivirus but a full scan has revealed no issues. Some of the pages that are opening are unsavoury and this is on my work laptop so I'm very keen to get it fixed. All help is greatly appreciated.I am running Windows XP Professional SP3. Auto update is pretty much up to date. Firefox is verion 3.0.5Many thanksMat

I've had an ongoing problem with pop up ads. They open a IE browser window periodically, whether I have launched IE for that session or even when its process isnt running like This is one:
http://www.popundersupply.net/?VFJDSz0xMjc0
or http://ca.thelovercalculator.com/Other/?a=AdOn

the window usually has a name that says trafficking site and it sorta scares me.. Even blocking some of the various sites at my router is not helping as it seems to cycle through a great many sites.
I am running XP Pro SP2, and I have run a spybot scan and an Ad-Aware scan with no success. I have looked in msconfig for any suspect services or startup items. Not sure what else to do there...

First time posting. I hope there is a solution.I open up IE8 (with pop-up blocker ON -high security) and went to BleepingComputer.com. Shortly (5 secs) a second IE8 browser window opens up and sends me to a different site (i.e. WebsiteSurvey.com).Many redirected sites are Survery sites but not all. This second browser will occur often, but not on every site I go to.I notice that Document and Settings\Default User \ Temporary Internet Files gets new entries every time this happens.Other things that happen after this infection are:When the computer is restarted, my McAffe On Access Scan is always disabled. I manually turn it back on with "Enable On Access Scan".About once a day, my McAffee antivirus will pop up with an infection in Document and Settings\Default User \ Temporary Internet Files\XXXXXXX called Exploit-PDF.ac.I have the file [1].PDF deleted.I also delete all the Temporary Internet files inside this folder.I am really concerned about having my ID and Passwords being stolen.I have run after being updated with latest signatures:McAfee scanThreatFire scanMalwarebytes scanSophos scanClamwin scanBitDefender scanESET scanAdaware scanSpybot scanRootkit RevealerStinger (which seems to hang up)HiJack-This looks normal from my limited viewpoint (I have not posted it anywhere yet)Most have been run in both Normal and Safe mode. They all come back nothing found.Something is hidden very well. What can I do next to identify what is causing this &qu... quick question - my IE7 is logging me out of password-protected sites whenever I click a link that opens a new window.

It happens when I log onto a site then click a link in that site that opens a process for that site in a new window (e.g. inserting a picture or selecting a search option).

I've tried the technique of going to "Folder View -> View -> Launch Folders Windows in a separate process" but it's still logging me out.

Any other ways to fix this?

Thanks!

I recently removed About:Blank from my computer, and alot of files that were infected were deleted in the process. Now, I am not able to access secure websites like Bank of America Online and Office of Recovery Services website. I am afraid, even though I am fairly well educated in computers and technology, that something important was deleted along the way.

Hello, I'm getting desperate. I have been using Firefox as my browser for a long time. Up until recently, I have had no problem. But recently I have been experiencing problems opening some sites. When opening these sites (there seems to be no rhyme or reason why some sites are affected and not others), the status bar almost reaches the end, then the application hangs. Firefox freezes and the application is "not responding". The only thing to do is to bail out by Ending Now. These sites can be opened using Internet Explorer.

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing, running various virus scans and malware scans - all to no avail. The Firefox site suggests it may be a Vundo virus, but I haven't been game to run the fix suggested by your site.

I am a confident computer user, except when it comes to hardcore system tinkering.

How likely is it that I have a Vundo type virus, or are you aware of any other reason why Firefox should have problems with some sites and not others?

I can, of course, stop using Firefox, but this is not preferred as I like Firefox better than IE Explorer.

I would really appreciate your advice.

Regards
Ozgramsci

I wasn't sure if I should put this in the security forum or the web forum, as they both apply. Yesterday I began having some trouble getting in to secure websites. It has always worked fine in the past but now for whatever reason it won't let me in. For example, I tried to purchase a game off of Amazon.com, added it to my cart and went to go check out but every time I try to log in to check out it just gives me the standard "The connection was refused when attempting to connect..." Firefox error when a website is down or whatever. Same thing happens when I try to access my bank account off of it's website. Just not able to get in to any secure servers. I tried using Internet Explorer and I get the same deal. I've played around some with the security settings on both browsers figuring something got reset but I still haven't figured it out. Any suggestions?

I previously posted a problem about the webcam working intermittently on my HP Mini 110 1020LA PC with Windows XP. I did all the things that were suggested to me, ie, download the HP 1000 webcam driver, re-installed the bios for the latest version and re-installed the Windows SP3 (all from the HP website). The problem is that the camera will work fine when I initially turn on the computer, but if I go into the internet to any page, or open a game on the computer, the camera will once again stop working and I need to re-boot the system again for it to work correctly. Can anyone advise me why this is happening?

I appreciate greatly the help the Tech Support Forum provides and Thank You!

Sincerely,
Gary

I've recently had quite a lot of malware removed from my computer, but my firefox browser still appears to be under the effect of some kind of virus which Malwarebytes and other virus scanners can't seem to find. Every now and then, a tab seems to open up that is either completely blank, or is reported as an attack site by firefox... I can't quite remember what the URLs were, except for one called "ceramics.com" or something...

Does anyone know how to deal with this kind of thing?

The cursor started opening links just a few days ago, gradually. It didn't open everything, now it does. The highlighing problem started yesterday. I am using a pc, win 7, IE 8.I appreciate any tips/suggestions as this is very frustrating.

When searching for answers to my problem, I ran across this thread on this forum from 5/18/05: Multiple issues - Homepage hijack, popups, IE browser closes, blue screen. A moderator went through quite a bit of instructions to fix that problem.

I was wondering if those instructions would work in most cases of similar problems, like mine.

An example of what's happening is Internet Explorer 6 and Netscape 8, both close when I enter my password on ebay and hit ok. I can sign in with Firefox 1.0.4, but when I try to download Turbo Lister, FF closes.

All three close when I try to reach www.marine-atlantic.ca. It starts to load, then BAM! It's gone.

When trying to access Panda to do a scan, all three close when I hit the scan button.

There are numerous other sites that do the same thing. A lot close when I try to enter password protected sites (that I am registered with).

A Trend Micro Housecall scan found nothing.

Ditto for McAfee, MS Ativiru, AdAware SE and Spybot.

My Firefox has been opening to (seemingly) random sites. I've also had Spybot and AVG detect and eliminate multiple threats in the last few days. The worst was when a program disguised as an anti-Spyware program appeared in my taskbar and tried to get me to buy a retail version. But that program has not reappeared since I did a couple of more cleanings with AVG and SpyBot.

My wife's laptop is plagued with unwanted sites (Hulu mostly, occasionally Twitter) opening in new tabs in Firefox. Google is *not* redirecting, and the problem doesn't appear to be related to any particular site. Overall, the machine has slowed despite good defragging and registry management habits.

I ran TDSSkiller, ESET online, Panda online, Hitman Pro, Microsoft Security Essentials, MBAM; found nothing problematic. I have run Defogger.

Following is the DDS log; attached are the Attach.txt and Ark.txt files. Any help you can offer is greatly appreciated.

Hello,

I have been having an issue with this site for a few days now. Every once in a while when opening Yahoo.com or Eurosport.yahoo.com or just browsing the sites I get redirected to this systweak.com site. I guess I have a bug somewhere on my computer causing this but I can't seem to find it. I tried scanning with Webroot, AVG, Spybot and used tools like AdwCleaner and JRT. It is still there and still redirects me to this stupid site. I have Win 8 and use Firefox 25.0.1. Can someone help me?

While on the iternet yesterday, Noton votified me that it had prevented two attempts to attack my computer (Backdoor.Tidserv - blocked and fully removed) (W32.Tidserv - fully removed) it also listed a trojan but I cannot find its name anywhere. Since that time internet explorer has acted strangely. I tried to update Lavasoft Adaware but kept getting an error message of no connection to the web. I then tried to go to the Lavasoft site but instead got a series of odd search sites. Then tried to connect to trend microsystems with the same type of result. This has only started since the Norton notification of yesterday.

Hello -

From your thread in WindowsXP forum, you should have followed all the steps outlined by chauffeur2, which would have also had you posting logs from Deckard's System Scanner.

Please do this now:

Download Deckard's System Scanner (DSS) to your Desktop. Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges.

Note:

DSS automatically runs HijackThis for you, but it will also install and place a shortcut to HijackThis on your desktop if you do not already have HijackThis installed.

Close all applications and windows.
Double-click on dss.exe to run it, and follow the prompts

If the following message from DSS appears, please click on "Yes" to allow it to download HijackThis, if you don't already have it.

Allow DSS through your firewall to download HijackThis by clicking "OK"

DSS has installed HijackThis, and placed a shortcut on your desktop. Click "OK" to allow the scan to continue.

.
When the scan is complete, two text files will open - main.txt <- this one will be maximized and extra.txt <-this one will be minimized
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of main.txt here.
Please attach extra.txt to your post.

Possibly related problem has been Firefox & Chrome both failing to access the internet after some minutes / hours (however I can still access emails through thunderbird when this happens - i.e. I can still access internet with other software.)

I have encountered an issue where my pinned sites (I have several on the task bar) are opening minimized. Up until this behavior started they were opening maximized.

Another strange behavior is that my IE11 shortcut on the task bar ignores the shortcut settings to open IE11 maximized and always opens IE11 in a window.

I can trace the behavior back to right after my IE11 was updated with KB3124275.

IE11 version: 11.0.9600.18163
Update Versions: 11.0.27 (KB3124275)

I have searched here and elsewhere looking for some insight on this and found nothing. I have tried closing all other programs, opening IE11, maximizing and closing and nada. I would appreciate any insight.

First time posting. I hope there is a solution.

I open up IE8 (with pop-up blocker ON -high security) and went to BleepingComputer.com. Shortly (5 secs) a second IE8 browser window opens up and sends me to a different site (i.e. WebsiteSurvey.com).
Many redirected sites are Survery sites but not all.
This second browser will occur often, but not on every site I go to.
I notice that Document and Settings\Default User \ Temporary Internet Files gets new entries every time this happens.
Other things that happen after this infection are:
When the computer is restarted, my McAffe On Access Scan is always disabled. I manually turn it back on with "Enable On Access Scan".
About once a day, my McAffee antivirus will pop up with an infection in Document and Settings\Default User \ Temporary Internet Files\XXXXXXX called Exploit-PDF.ac.
I have the file [1].PDF deleted.
I also delete all the Temporary Internet files inside this folder.
I am really concerned about having my ID and Passwords being stolen.

I have run after being updated with latest signatures:
McAfee scan
ThreatFire scan
Malwarebytes scan
Sophos scan
Clamwin scan
BitDefender scan
ESET scan
Adaware scan
Spybot scan
Rootkit Revealer
Stinger (which seems to hang up)

Hey all, I've got a serious issue that I can't seem to find an answer for. I've done a lot of virus & malware removal in the past, but this one has got me stumped. I'm not sure if I should be posting here or in the Troubleshooting forum, so please feel free to move it if need be.

Last Wednesday evening I was watching a movie file when spam websites began popping up on my screen every 10-30 seconds. They open in google chrome, but they do not show a chrome icon on the taskbar and when trying to open the settings in-browser, the menu just goes away in 1 second. The sites it shows are almost always different, ranging from searchacity.com (most often), younghollywood.com, workingmothertv.com, nickmom.com, gameshok.com and many more. They will often close themselves after a few seconds if there is no internet connection, or they have been minimized. They can be closed, but new ones always pop back up again. When they are minimized, they show as a small bar in the bottom left corner.

In taskmanager, the open windows show up as browser32.exe & can be ended from there. I've also noticed a few strange processes (csrss.exe, atieclxx.exe, etc), but most have legitimate causes. In MSConfig, I found one process in startup called UIHumble (I, not a lowercase L) that has no google results for it. I've stopped that startup item, so we'll see if it makes a difference next startup.

Hello freestud -

We would normally start with a clean copy of RKill by Grinler, and follow with a fresh updated version of AdwCleaner, then Junkware Removal Tool and .MalwareBytes Anti-Malware, but you say that these have been used so far.

Remove all of the downloaded programs Malwarebytes (can be updated), AdwCleaner (open the program and hit Uninstall), Junkware Removal Tool (can be installed) and we will also run ESET onLine Scanner -

Now, quietman7 from here has also put his 3 step pop-up remover diagnostics, and you have attempted a few of these, but they often wor, along with resetting your home page -

NOTE :These are the most common solutions to eliminating the pop-up ads.1. Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel or Programs and Features if using Vista/Windows 7/8. From within Add/Remove Programs look for anything in that is odd and select Remove.2. Open your browser and disable (uncheck) all extensions. Make a list, then one by one, re-enable each extension to see if the pop-ups start appearing again with that particular extension. Once you identify the responsible extension...permanently remove it but let me know which one it was so I can update the above list.

Hello. I've been having an issue with annoying little redirecting bug on my computer lately. When I'm in firefox, I've noticed that if I'm looking at a site (doesn't matter which site) it will suddenly jump to a page called videocop. I ran a few virus scans and deleted some things it found, and it only succeeded in making it happen less frequently.I also noticed a separate issue when I was looking for solution, in that certain sites (mainly help removing spyware/downloading virus scans/eset etc.) will refuse to open. The page will flash up for a moment and then it displays as thought the internet isn't connected (unable to establish connection).I reran the MAMB scan I did originally and still to regkeys are popping up as infected. I've deleted (or it says I've deleted it) several times now, but the same 2 things keep popping up. I had Spybot and SUPERAntiSpyware installed, but I think the virus was blocking them from being updated, because it kept insisting the program was blocked or there was an error, so I ended up deleting them and trying to reinstall, but those sites are all giving me the unable to establish connection page so I gave up and came here.Any help is appreciated! Thanks, KellyThe MAMB log:QUOTEMalwarebytes' Anti-Malware 1.46www.malwarebytes.orgDatabase version: 4340Windows 5.1.2600 Service Pack 3Internet Explorer 8.0.6001.187027/23/2010 10:28:34 AMmbam-log-2010-07-23 (10-28-34).txtScan type: Full scan (C:\|)Objects s... Hi there,

I'm not sure how I did this, but I've infected my computer with trojans / malware. I ran updated and ran both AVG and then Malwarebytes and they each found and succesfully cleaned some trojan infections.

But they didn't fix everything. When I google something and click on a link, I often get redirected to a different address. Also when I open Firefox, AVG goes nuts, telling me that various tracking cookies have been blocked.

I've followed your instructions carefully. I'm posting DDS.txt and attaching ATTACH.zip.

Thanks so much for your help.

Hey everyone, I'm hoping someone might be able to help me. Firefox and IE has been opening new tabs on random link clicks and sometimes without clicking at all. I'm getting links redirected to something with the site name followed by iebvz. (example of what I ran into while creating an account here http://bleepingcomputer.iebvz.com). The link then redirects to Quibids.com. I appreciate the time and assistance provided. Posted below are my DDS results and attach file. I've run malwarebytes, virus software, and spybot which removed mostly cookies and a couple of other "not so nasty" PUPs.

Hi there:

I often save my favorite sites to a folder so i can get back to them later and for a long time I could just go to my folder (on my disk i save the sites to) and IE would automatically open the website no problem. But recently (couple months now) when I try to open the same sites i know they are good sites an error comes up asking me to make sure the name is spelt right. Yes the url name is correct.

I think I may know what triggered the problem, but I dont know how to fix it. One day while i was surfing the net i acitentally came across one of those pron sites that say you must DL file to access the site. I kept telling it no but somewhere in the perecistance I hit yes. One of those perecistant pop ups that ask you and when you say no another comes up asking to press ok sayinf i undrstand i wont have full access unless i say yes and then the first screen shows again (back and forth several times).

Anyway the thing downloaded, and i guess it associated itself so everytime IE (saved link) opens the program opens. Fortunately, when i actually go to open the actuall internet explorer exectutable file IE opens just fine. UN-fortunately today i can't remember the exact name of the DLed file: ULA something. During the time of DL when i saw the file to be no good I used spybot, adaware, nav and add/remove program to get rid of the thing. Well i think its off the cpu but like i said, I think somehow there is still an association to ULA somewhere although my favorite... Read more

this i can tell you the program is safe. the cpu is the computers processor which does not get hijacked.usally it is your browser that gets hijacked ex; internet explorer netscape navigator or whatever one you use. as far as the logs hijack this creates someone with a whole lot more experience than myself will need to help you with. i look at them then when somebody who knows them answers i go back and study to see if i picked any of the same things.

I am running Windows XP Pro SP2

About 3 days ago I loaded IE7. Nice browser, liked the features. I happened to check history and there were 5 or 6 sex (and other) sites listed (history doesn't seem to give times). I had not visted these sites. I cleared history, checked and they were gone. A couple of days later, they were back (I had not visited).

I ran regedit and searched for the name of one of them (closetmonster.com) and nothing found.

I ran Hijack-this, no errors or strange entries found (to my untrained eyes). Someone suggested running ComboFix (latest version). I did, I have the log. Can somebody help decipher it. or recommend a course of action. I didn't want to post it in the wrong place.

I nearly forgot, since deleting the history (befire Hijack-This and ComboFix) opening any Microsoft Office app is VERY slow (1-2 minutes for Outlook etc...)

I have this weird problem for a few days now.

I'll try to describe my problem is bullet points.

1. I was searching something on google, i missclicked on a link that looked questionable by mistake. A new tab opened to some spam ad site. I clicked to close as soon as possible.
New pop up with javascript appears and asks me something about Leave Page - Stay. I press leave. I think i noticed a hickup in the browser at the time and i thought to myself if something happened.

2. At a random time a new tab appears to an ad site as i kept using firefox. It started to annoy me as the a new tab kept opening with spam ad

3. I thought that something is bad and started looking up to forums and tried the following

a. I had Nod32 5 installed and still instanlled, it's not picking up anything.

b. I ran TDDSkiller from Kaspersky and it finds nothing.

c. I ran Gmer and it finds nothing.

d. I ran MalwareBytes and it finds nothing.

e. I ran SuperAntiSpyware and it only finds Tracking Cookies that i repeatedly deleted without result.

f. I have tried Nod32 online scanner in case my local scanner is compromised and it picks nothing.

g. I have formatted the hard drive that holds the OS and reinstalled everything from scratch and still the same problem!

~The potential virus/malware acts like this.~

I can browse any sites without limitations, it doesn't prohibit me from accesing any antivirus or anti-malware sites and nothing may happen for 2-3 hours but suddenly w... Read more

I have been having trouble with web sites taking, sometimes 20 seconds or longer to open, or not completely opening or opening as is it was designed back in 1996 or something. Sometimes all graphics are missing , with just the hyperlinks showing. I uninstalled Google Chrome and downloaded and installed latest version about a week ago. Still have the same problems. No error messages except for occasionally a web site will time out before it ever shows up. My Internet speed was recently updated by suddenlink to 10mbps. When I click to go to a web site, in the bottom left corner of screen it will state different 'waiting on ..........' , the website, the adclick, and others .

I encountered a popup that would not close and which resulted in a phony Windows Vista Recovery window that immediately began scanning my hard drive. When I clicked the Stop button, other windows opened. I managed to close several of the windows with Task Manager. Suddenly the system shut down on it's own, and when it restarted it went straight to the Windows Vista Recovery window again. This window would not close. I have a screen shot that I can send if it would help.

My desktop looked completely different, and all of the folders like Pictures and Music appeared to be empty. All of the folders that were previously on my desktop were gone. The start menu and toolbars looked different as well. Fearing the worst, I called a friend who recommended Malwarebytes (MBAM). I ran it and I am including the log file in the zipped folder for you. Basically it appeared to help. The Windows Vista Recovery window went away, but all of the files were still missing. I ran a scan using Avira (free version) and noticed that it was scanning a lot of files, including some that I thought were missing. It turns out that they were just hidden, and I have managed to unhide almost everything that I had feared lost.

Now I have 2 problems which tell me that the system is still not 100% clean. When I click on the hyperlinks that come up in search results (yahoo and google), I am redirected to random websites or the page merely refreshes.

The other problem is that IE frequently opens in the backgr... Read more
