Solved: Microsoft Office Word 2003 is gone and won't open

Q: Solved: Microsoft Office Word 2003 is gone and won't open

Hello, I have Windows XP purchased in 2005, and came with Microsoft Office.

I was using Microsoft word early this morning and something happened and now it won't open.

Of all my desktop icons, everything has color except the Microsoft is WHITE, which I suspected right away had been compromised.

I don't have any Microsoft word software, it came with my computer.

Help, can I get it back? I need to write some letters.

Thank you.

Every time I get a word file as an attachment and open it up, it defaults to the reading layout, then I have to close that to get it to display as I want. Is there a way to disable that and only put it in that format if I want? Thanks

I'm using an Asus Laptop K52F running Window 7 with 4 GB RAM. Suddenly the Microsoft Office 2003 has developed a problem whereas I can not save, and/or open/close various files. When I open Word to a blank page I get the message "Windows cannot open the existing (normal). When I try to close it I get different messages that I don't understand concerning saving to "normal" "yes/no", etc. then finally closes to my desktop. I uninstalled the program and then reinstalled to only get the same thing happening. Is this repairable and are there any options to fix/resolve? Thanks

Just recently something has changed with my Microsoft Office Word 2003 app.

I'm a writer and I have always been able to drag my pages that I have written today to a folder in My Documents and the same file would stay on my desktop for immediate access later. I realize other may not work this way but it is how I prefer to work as it has become my habit

When I try to drag and drop it now, it drops into the My Documents folder but it no longer remains on the desktop.

Now, in conjunction with this problem, I have another new problem, which is that when I write a page of text in Word and save it to a My Documents folder it doesn't go there. Also when I save a picture to My Pictures as I've always done it won't be there when I look for it. Something is preventing me from saving things and I haven't a clue what it is. I have to open the My Documents folder and drag the Word text page into it. It's the only way I can save stuff for some reason.

Can someone please tell me how I can fix this problem?

Thank you in advance.

I'm having a strange problem with Microsoft Word 2003 SP3.

It only happens on new docs. I'm a writer and when I open ongoing projects in Word everything is fine, but when I open a new doc. my Page Setup doesn't work. If I set it to have 1" of space top, bottom and sides, it doesn't work on the top. My first line starts at the very top of the page.

Also, the ruler up the left side should be dark where that top inch of space should be, but it isn't because it's not working. I discovered a temporary fix in Page Setup by setting the top space to be 2" and the sides and bottom to be 1". However, even doing this I don't get the dark inch or so at the top of my left margin ruler.

I did a repair in ADD Remove Programs but it didn't change anything. It might be a corruption in Word because I have the same Office 2003, SP3 on my laptop and I've compared all the settings on both computers and they appear to be identical.

Has anyone here run into this problem, and do you think uninstalling and reinstalling Office might solve the problem?

Thanks in advance.

A:Solved: open office/microsoft word

You got it save it as a Word Document in Open Office. If you opened it and then resaved it in Open Office it may have saved it as an Open Office file type instead of a Microsoft Word File Type. I know there is a way to make Open Office to default to saving as a Word Document. Just look thru the settings. So your first step to investigate is too see what file type OpenOffice is saving as by default.

Good afternoon people,

Firstly, I would like to say hello to everyone who've helped me in the past with my Access help. It's been a long absence with study commitments and such, but as is the purpose of this group, I would like to ask for some tech help:

The situation: Microsoft Word (as part of Office 2003 Professional Edition) frequently closes without user notification on my dad's laptop (Windows Vista Basic). It's recently started, and it interrupts his work. He says that the issue occurs when he minimises documents, but he didn't indicate a frequency of this occurrence. He also told me that once he successfully saves a document and closes Word, he then encounters issues when opening said document; it says that the file has been "corrupted" (I can't remember exactly what the dialog box says), and that the data can be recovered, or to proceed with opening the document. Data recovery doesn't work, and when he proceeds to open the document, Word returns "Program not responding" and "Critical error caused by the program" and other prompts of this nature, which then forces the program to quit.

I am aware that a similar problem is in the Microsoft Knowledge Base for Word 2003, but was last revised in 2004 (so covered only xp and 2000), and am not certain if this issue is the same for Windows Vista. It related to the "Handwriting Recognition" program.

Additionally, as always, there are a multitude of ... Read more

I'm having problems with all programs in Microsoft Office 2003. Here's the situation...

6 months ago I took a computer class which taught the use of Microsoft Office 2007 programs. As a part of the class, we got a trial version of Microsoft Office 2007, which is supposed to last for 180 days.

A few weeks ago the trial period ended and I could no longer use Office '07. I uninstalled the trial software and wanted to go back to using Office '03.

However, now whenever I try to start any program from Office '03, I get a message box telling me it's beginning some kind of installer. After a minute of this box, I get an error message saying:

"This patch package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer patch package."

I downloaded and used the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility, but it didn't help. I can't run any of the Office programs, repair them using the installation CD, or even uninstall any of them. I'm running Windows XP Professional.

What are my options? Are there anyways to fix this problem?

I keep getting error messages when trying to open files created in Word 2003. The files burn to cd without a problem but when I try to open them off of the cd I get the file may be corrupt try to use recover text option or open and repair option. The odd thing is these word 2003 files open in Office xp without any issues. I have also got an error stating I do not have adminstrative rights on my cd drive. The cd drive is not a network shared drive so I am confused by this error. I have replaced the old cd-r/rw drive with a dvd r/rw and still get the same problems. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry on the go

But all it is. Is that you have size 10 and then size 22 after it

I can't explain it clearly it's 10 10 10 10 10 22 22 22
And when you backspace the 22 size it stays 22 until you make it size10 again
As for that little dot, it must be the font at that size, or something

Hello there.

Microsoft office 2003 problem.
When starting microsoft word on vista ulitmate, there seems to be a problem

This will automatically shut down, saying there was a problem and is shutting down...
The other programs seem fine, Excel, powerpoint, etc.

I havent a clue what this could be, has anyone else had this problem.
In the top right corner of microsoft word it will say "Finalizing Installation" and then after you type a couple of sentences it will shut down on its own..

This is for a friend of mine, who had microsoft office put on when she bought the laptop of a friend, though she does not have the disk, so i wondered if this is an installation problem.

Would this be some sort of copy of microsoft office 2003, that was put on for her
She has only found this out now as her son needs to use word for school
( vista ultimate, 64 bit, sp2)

A:Microsoft office 2003/ Problem with Word

I assume that you're opening up Word from the Start menu here...

Open up the Start Menu and go to Word. Right-click on it. Open up its Compatability tab which is the third tab.

2003 is an XP product. Therefore, Word (and Excel and Access if they're 2003 versions) should be run in compatibility mode for "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)."

If this is not so, check the box and select Windows XP from the list to make it so amd OK the box to close it.

See if it runs now.

A:Microsoft Office Word 2003 problem

I have seen several suggestions for dealing with this problem, some work for some people, others don't and
some of them are potentially destructive, in my opinion, therefore I do not propose to supply any links.

However, I will tell you that I had the same problem recently. I run Office 2003 Professional Edition and
downloaded the Office 2007 trial. It was not for me and I uninstalled it. My problems then started,
with these 'Please wait while Windows configures' messages.

I tried all the usual 'repair' methods, but the only thing which fixed the problem was a complete
uninstall and reinstall of Office 2003. That would be my only suggestion and in addition,
I left the setup files on my hard disk, when asked, because there are some features that are not
immediately installed by the program, even on a full install and it saves digging out the CD/DVD
whenever you come across these features. (Don't remember too clearly which ones, I think it
may have been in connection with Publisher).

I appreciate this may be stating the obvious. If you can find an easier method, which you trust,
good luck.

btw, I am assuming that your computer is virus, adware, malware and spyware free.
You should run something like Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpware if you haven't
checked recently; presumably you have a realtime antivirus scanner.

I've run into a bit of a weird issue with my Microsoft Word. Whenever I highlight/select text, and press any button (space, "x", backspace, delete, etc.), instead eliminating all that text and performing the action that I pressed, the text just stays in place as if I never highlighted in and the action is carried out at the beginning of the selection. I've never seen anything like this before, and I'm really not sure how to search in the help function for it, so does anyone have any idea how I might fix this? Let me know if you need more information or anything and I'll be happy to share. It's just a very irritating, very bizarre issue. Thanks!

Hello everyone, thanks for viewing.

So I logged onto my laptop to work on my university assignment some more, and poof, it won't open.
I keep getting the same error every time.

I can open the file in WordPad but I just get fifteen pages of ">:?:%<":?&:"
I can open it in OpenOffice but the formatting all changes, headers/footers disappear, images disappear, text boxes containing quotes aren't there.

I copied the Open Office version into a new blank Word page; and filled in the blanks (which took me an hour) but when I saved and opened the file; I got the same error.

Hoping it was me doing something wrong with the way I saved it or the default program to open it, I repeated the process taking up another hour; but I'd done it right, and got the same error code.

The default program to open it is Office 2003, the same format I made/saved the replacement file in.
It makes no sense to me. Also, why now? What changed? It was working fine yesterday.
Not done any downloads or scans so I don't know what the changed factor is.

Please can anyone help me, these assignments are dawning upon me and I need to get my finishing touches done before I can submit them, I also don't want to risk submitting a faulty file.

Thank you so much!

I'm not sure when this started as I have not used Office in a few weeks.  My computer uses Windows 7.  Today, I went to open a document in Word and it said "File Conversion--Select the encoding that makes your document readable."  I can choose between Windows, MS-DOS, or other encoding.  I went to check another file and it says "The file cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents."  It also says "The file is corrupt and cannot be opened."  I get the same kinds of messages with every document and with my PowerPoint as well.  All of my Office is 2007.
I tried running my AVG Free and SUPERAntiSpyware Free Edition and they did not pick up anything.  I also tried restoring to my last update, but was told that I cannot because the file was changed in the process.  I had to restore for another, unrelated issue about a week ago and it worked fine.
I'm thinking this is some kind of virus but I have no idea how to handle it since nothing is picking it up and I can't restore to even three days ago.  Any help would be IMMENSELY appreciated, as I am a college student and need to be able to hand in final papers!

A:Cannot Open Microsoft Office Files; Word Docs Appear as Symbols

Update--I'm starting to think that one of my antiviruses cleaned out the virus because nothing is showing up, but my documents are still corrupted.  I deleted my normal.dotm file, and also scanned my C Drive for errors so I could revert to my backup from November 18, but everything is still corrupted.  I would like to know if 1) I got the virus, or if it is still lying dormant in my system somewhere; 2) if my computer is safe to use; and 3) if there is any way to get my documents back!

I want something simple to use as I am "not great" on a computer yet. Is there a site to down load from and/or get it at a cheep price or even for free?

Also, is there a easy way to have a spell check tab on my Browser or some where to be able to run spell checks where ever and when ever I want?

Thanx so much! Timex

I've tried numerous times to set up an Outlook acct in order to be able to email docs from Word. When I would click on mail, an outlook email window would open but "send" etc buttons don't work.

Today, I tried to intergrate Outlook to use my MSN Acct. That failed, too. Can't even get an email window to pop up in Word now.

I acquired my Office Word 2003 by downloading a 3-mo. trial version that came w/my new PC/Windows XP. Trial period is over and I have NOT converted to the full Office 2003 program.

Once Trail period expired, it's my understanding that not all Word functions are now available to me.

Could it be that being able to email from Word is one of the functions I lost?

In "reduced functionality mode" Word is effectively just a viewer and can print the document, that is all.

A:Solved: On my computer, under Office 2003, where are MS Word macros stored?

They could be in many different locations:

- Within the document in question, which is probably not the case since you're missing your macros.

- In your, which is normally located in your profile directory (usually C:\Documents and Settings\YourUsername) under \Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\

- In any .dot file in your Word Startup folder, which is usually in your profile directory: \Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP\

- In any other .dot file in any other folder, that was manually added to Word through Tools, Templates and Add-Ins. If your macros were not in any of the previously mentioned locations, search the hard drive for any .dot files and check whether your macros in there...

For some reason just lately when I'm tying pargraphs in Word, the letters I type are slow to appear on the page. They appear a couple or three seconds after I've typed them, and in some cases, when I review the paragraphs, I find words that are missing two or three letters.

Something must be using a lot of my resources, but I keep all my security programs updated and I have loads of disc space and tons of memory. I had the same problem once before on another system and never solved it.

Can anyone please offer suggestions as to what's causing this?

When I exit MS Office 2007 Word a pane appears that says "Word has stopped working and will search for a solution" (which is never found) followed by "Word is re-starting." Hello from first time poster here.

Word 2003 will not open files; I must open Word, then click on file via the Explorer interface, or click on the file and use "Open With" (Word) each time.

I have read many posts regarding Word xx not opening and the fix thing before posting this, and in fact have worked for years fixing other user's problems for a State agency. No joy, here.

Ann Troy's advice is great, and I followed what she said as well as my past experience, with negative results. I have:
1) Renamed all to, restarted the 'puter.
2) Done the Fix/Repair thing with MS Office 2003
3) Removed Word, Reinstalled with MS Office 2003
4) Completely Reinstalled MS Office 2003, then did the thing.
5) Cleaned out all instances of (both user profies and the MS
main template folder), rebooted (as with each operation above) and
then added in an old (previously working) file from an
archived and normally disconnected USB hard drive file.

Other Office apps - PPT, Excel, Access - all work perfectly. I use a standard McAfee Anti-virus application supplied by my ISP (Comcast).

Although I can get Word to work this crippled way, this is what I do for a living and it's killing me in time to have to hunt down each Word file instead of clicking on the shortcuts to just open them in Word.

This occurred overnight - last night. One minute everything worked; then an hour later I returned to the ... Read more

Hey everybody

I've been trying to figure this out for a while, but just can't seem to get it to work right.

I have the Microsoft Office Access 2003 Developer Extensions, which has a packaging wizard, that is used to package up a Access database and include a runtime environment, so users without access on their computer can use a database.

I have access on the computer in my office, so I take the file I want to package, and run the wizard, creating a setup file for the database and runtime. Now, I go over to the server, run the setup program, and have it installed on the server.

I can run the database on the server fine. I open it up, it runs in runtime mode, just as the package wizard said it should, and I can do whatever I want. The problem I am having is, I try to create a share, so that I can share this program with users on the network.

When I do this, it just doesn't work right. It is saying that it can't find the file "C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Desktop\ifg_agent_database\ifg_agents_modified_10_13_05.mdb"

Any ideas on what is going on?

I have created in Microsoft Word 2003 on an XP OS some lengthy documents. I created them using a view setting of 150%.

I sent them to my employer, who is using Windows 98 and Microsoft Word 97. My boss opened them with his system and they displayed on the screen at a view of 200%. He wants me to send him Word documents that he can open from the CD-R that I send that will automatically display at 100% view on the screen so that he does not have to set the view for each document as it displays.

So what is the answer.

Is there a way that I can save my created documents so that when my boss gets them on a CD-R that they will open on his system at a view setting of 100%.

Is there also a way that his system can be set to default to 100% in reading from the CD-R.

My boss does not want to copy the documents to the system hard disk from my sent CD-R, preferring to read and copy directly from the CD-R that I send, so that the original documents will not accidentally be changed.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Dell Dimension 8200, running Office XP, and I use Microsoft Office Professional 2002. (I bought this computer in 2002)

I have been having a problem for several weeks, ever since I had a number of viruses and other bad things going on with my computer which have since been resolved.

I can't open documents that I had previously created with Microsoft Office. (Word and Excel) When I try to do so, I get a message at the bottom of the screen that says "requesting virus scan" and a timer comes up, but then nothing happens.

I have tried a number of things, including uninstalling and reinstalling Microsoft Office Professional, going to the Help Menu (Detect and Repair) when I open Excel or Word, and nothing works. I was having trouble even opening would only open in Safe mode every other time I tried to open it, until I read another helpful hint in this forum today about renaming I am hoping that someone will be able to help me with this problem as I am pulling my hair out.

I have a document in Microsoft Office Word 2007 that has information in the header that I would like repeated in the footer.

Essentially, I have two strings of text in the header. One is the name of the document and the other is the date it was created. I would like these two strings to be automatically inserted in to a specific spot in the footer each time they are updated in the header.

Is this possible, and, if so, can someone please tell me how to do it?

Hey, I'm having problems with Microsoft word and I really need it fixed.
Here's my problem:
I click on Microsoft word... it says "Windows installers - Preparing to install..."
Then it says: "The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running windows in safe mode, or if the windows installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."

I may have deleted something in the Add/Remove list... but I don't remember what it was.
Any help would be appreciated

Suddenly, all of my Open Office word processing documents converted into Microsoft Word documents. This literally happened overnight and I have no idea how it happened. The starter kit for Microsoft Office came already on my laptop but I never purchased any of the four programs in the suite. How can I convert them all back to Open Office docs without having to open them up in Word? (The Microsoft Office starter kit gives you something like 20 free "opens" for Microsoft Word but then you have to buy it.) Any help would be truly appreciated.

Hi Roy,

most likely what has happened is that Windows has somehow assigned ODT files to Word.

First, check whether the extensions of the files are still ODT. For this you need to switch off the option "Hide extensions for known file types" in the Folder Options of Windows Explorer (Tools, Folder Options, View). You can now see whether the files have a .ODT or a .DOC extension.

If they are still .ODT, do a right-click on one of them while holding the Shift key and choose "Open With...". Now you check the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box and locate "swriter" in the list above. If swriter is not there, you'll need to click on Browse and locate it on your hard disc, probably in C:\Program Files\\program\

After doing this, .ODT files will always be opened by, and the icon will also change accordingly.

If the file extensions are actually .DOC, and you don't use Office, you can use the same trick to assign .DOC files to OpenOffice. Then when you modify one of these .DOC files, don't just Save them, but use "Save As" to save them as .ODT files.

All this is assuming you use Windows XP... I don't know how assigning file types works in Vista...

I recently had to purchase a new computer because my old one crapped out. I had Window XP on it and had purchased Microsoft Office Standard (xp version) so I could get Word, Excel and Outlook. Later I purchased another Microsoft Office, XP CD so I could install Publisher. My new computer came with Vista Home Premium. Can I download these applications on my new computer with the Vista operating system or do I need to go by new version of these applications that are Vista compatible? Thanks! Rich

For some reason my Microsoft WORD isn't opening up.. When I click the icon the programs starts to open (by that I mean the 4"x4" square logo shows up) and then it stops there before opening up the whole page. Then It freezes up and I am unable to do anything else. I went to my documents and clicked a document there and the same thing happened. This is what I've done so far:
1. I did system restore and nothing was fixed.
2. I deleted WORD and Works and then reinstalled them. Still, nothing was fixed.
3. I deleted all "" hidden files (I read about sweets problem with WORD and tried that). After trying that, WORD opened, but I was unable to open a document because it said at the bottom of the page "requesting virus scan". It goes no further than that.

I think the problem started after I downloaded a calendar template from the last Windows Office update newsletter.

when i try to open microsoft word the computer freezes. i found out about using wordpad instead, which is fine, and using wordpad does not make the computer freeze. i click on start, then on run, then type in wordpad. but someone recently sent me a microsoft word document as an attachment, and when i tried to open the attachment the computer froze again. so i sent that email to a friend who opened the attachment, then copied and pasted the contents in an email back to me.

is there a way i can access microsoft word documents without bothering my friend (in terms of copying and pasting in an email?).

what other information do you need in order to help me with this problem? i have windows 98. a friend uninstalled then reinstalled microsoft word, but it did not help.

Hi all

I am using Windows XP and office 2003. I am using Microsoft Office Picture Manager to view tif files.

1. I open a tif file.
2. I make an annotation change eg: Use the hightlighting tool to hightlight some text. Fine, no problem!
3. I save the document.
4. I close the document and try reopening it:

I get this error:

"The file selected is not a valid Microsoft Document Imaging file"

I recreated my Windows XP profile and this resolved the problem

That was two weeks the problem is back!

Any ideas?

I have two problems with Word 2003.

First, regardless of any changes made to a document, when I close the application I do not get a prompt asking if I want to save the changes.

Second, I cannot open more than one document at a time. If I have a document open, and I try to open a second document, it flashes the second document on the screen briefly and then closes it, leaving me with my first document open. There are no windows minimized to the taskbar, and there are no documents (other than the first document I opened) listed in the Window menu of Word.

I have installed all updates and service packs (both for Office 2003 and for Windows XP), and I am not using any 3rd party add-ins. I even tried uninstalling all Office related applications and reinstalling. No dice.

This has been going on for quite some time now, and I cannot find ANY information that seems to relate. I am begging for help here, so anything is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I have an Excel file which has some moving objects as well as some drop down menus. I recently installed MS Office 2007 after erasing 2003. The Excel tables now are disabled, the file now looks like a picture, only the fields outside of the content are really clickable.I have tried to enable all macros, downloaded the MS compatibility pack, still same issue. Any suggestions/ideas? The file works in 2013 and 2016.I can share the file upon request ...

I am running Office 2003 on Windows 7. My PC is only 6 months old and everything has been running like butter. All of a sudden Office files open slowly when double-clicked from their respective locations (they would normally blink up). If I open Word or Excel and then open the files from there, they open quick. Outlook on the other hand, is just slow to load up...which it wasn't before.

I did a ton of research online and couldn't get a clear fix. My thoughts are:
Anti Virus? (I'm using AVG Free)
Ad-Aware Free? (Ad-Watch live is on...however it was on before)
Windows update or office update?

But obviously I'm here to get your thoughts. It's a pain in the ass when I bought a new PC so it could perform quick, and now spreadsheets and email take 20 seconds or more to open.

I just wanted to add that when I disconnect the PC from the internet, the problem seems to go away?

Hey All,

Here is my issue. The Company we consult for has not transitioned all of the way to Office 2007. We have a number of machines that still have Office 2003. Compatibility Pack works on almost all issues.

Current issue is one of our users received a PowerPoint 2003 that has embedded PowerPoint 2007 files. When the user opens the PowerPoint 2007 file Office 2003 shuts down. He has to download the 2007 file to his desktop.

From what I can see this is because the file conversion process shuts down Office 2003 before attempting to open the PowerPoint 2007 file.

Another issue that may be complicating the error is we had to run a Fixit patch from Microsoft that was causing Excel, Word and PowerPoint to be scanned which caused long opening times. I don't remember the KB article for that one at the moment but will find it if I need to.

Thanks for any help in advance.

I recently installed the Microsoft Office 2010 Beta, but this morning its intro screen stays stuck at "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run." Googling it resulted in only two threads, neither of them having the answer.

I'm back to using Office 2007, by simply setting my Word and Excel documents to open by Office 2007 by default, but now my Word and Excel icons have become much less pretty, such as my Word icons becoming a very plain "DOCX" icon instead of the normal "blue W" icon. I checked, and the file types are still regular Word documents. Is there a way to get the pretty icons back?

A:Office 2010 Problems: "Starting Microsoft Office Click-to-Run" & Unattractive DOCX icons for Word documents.

Regarding changing the icon:
Go to either My Computer or Windows Explorer.
Click Tools, Folder Options, File Types tab.
Scroll down to the DOCX file type (file types are in alphabetical order), click on it one time to highlight it.
Click the Advanced button.
The "Edit File Type" screen appears.
There is a Change Icon button in the top right area.
Click the Change Icon button.
You should have other icon choices to pick from.
Side note: If you don't like any of those icons, you can always hit the Browse button,
and browse to where other icons are, (you can assign any icon to any file type that you want, it is a matter of personal preference).
Icons are found in .exe files (executables), some (not all) .dll (dynamic link library) files, and .ico files.
