When I installed Win8 on one computer I need a H.P. printer driver. So I went to H.P. support/download did not find the needed driver so I called their Tech. support. A friendly support guy looked at my system and told me my copy of Microsoft Win8 bought at Best Buy was not a legit copy, also my system had been infected and they needed to remove my Win8 clean my system and reinstall Win8. made me a deal of a reduced price of $250US I knew this was not right so I begged them good buy went to Best Buy where I have good friends in the Geek Squad. they got the needed driver and printer works fine. Today my Netgear routher died, called Netgear to get my lifetime warranty. This also was a support in India guy said it would cost$39US to make sure it was the router I said thanks but no thanks. Took my old Netgear router back to Best Bye where I bought it three years ago and they gave me a new Netgear router. I needed setup help so called Netger as new user also in India guy was friendly looked at my system and helped me get it setup. Then he informed me my computer was under attack and my files were being read he could fix my system and protect my files for the small sum of just $85US. Well I was using a small backup H.P. computer on the Net. hardwired and it was almost never used. So I knew it was a India Tech. support scam again. More replies Answer Match 57.54% I bought a new PSU, that came in the mail today. Once I started up the computer I discovered that my USB ports don't work. Last Friday when my video card died, my 4 year old broke the two front USB ports. The computer's manufacturer surmises this shorted out the back ports and now wants to replace the motherboard and case. Both are under warranty, thank goodness. So now my conundrum, I didn't buy the new PSU from the manufacturer, but it is the same brand as my old one. Do I just send the box back with the new one (which lets them organize the cables ten times better than I can) or do I put the old one back in? Or do I send both? There is nothing wrong with the old PSU, it's just not powerful enough for my new graphics card, which is NOT leaving my possession! I know the laptop is very old(2001) but I really use it mainly to check emails. Any help in resolving the above issues would be highly appreciated. Thank you. Sincerely, shafiahmed A:TECH SUPPORT First off, All updates are available for Windows XP and will continue to be available till the end of time. There will just not be any NEW updates for XP. I just installed XP on an old computer 2 days ago and ran all of 142 Windows Updates. As for your current installation, try running a Clean Boot. If this works then add one startup item at a time, restarting each time till the computer becomes unresponsive, then you know what the problematic program is. Also, go to Start/Run and type chkdsk C: /R and press enter, in the command prompt type a Y for Yes and reboot the computer. Check Disk will go thorough 5 stages and takes some time. It will check your HDD for integirty. 11 more replies Answer Match 57.12% IRC tech support channels Just curious, does anyone know of any irc channels that would be good for asking general tech questions? A:IRC tech support channels I don't know of any personally...but google probably does :) 2 more replies Answer Match 57.12% I have a friend who had a problem on her computer and she called her ISP Comcast for help since she uses their Norton anti-virus program. To make a long story short, she had to provide them with both her log in & email passwords and then they wanted to charge her$215 to clean her computer.
That doesn't make sense to me - I'm not aware of any reliable ISP tech support asking for passwords. I know they ask for permission to take control of a computer and then supply a service number the computer user has to enter. Is this something new that an ISP tech support asks for passwords.

She has changed her email password and I recommended to her to also change her log on password.

I'm not sure of ISP Comcast procedures but Remote Assistance opens with a Password the users needs to provide to the person they are requesting help from so that person can connect to the computer.Remote Assistance FAQsInvite Another User to Troubleshoot Your Windows 7 Machine with Remote AssistanceHow to Use Windows 7 Remote Assistance Easy Connect Asking for a log in and email passwords sometimes makes it easier for the Tech to do what they need to do especially when dealing with a novice user who knows little about computers. This is not something I would do but it does occur and some folks provide that information. $215 seems like a lot of money but again I don't know exactly what they had to do to clean this computer or how long it took. This sounds like an issue she should follow up by contacting ISP Comcast and speaking to a supervisor in their support division. 11 more replies Answer Match 57.12% Hi, little glitch. Is it for Outlook Express or Microsoft Outlook?? 14 more replies Answer Match 57.12% Hello, It all began with a free space issue - after connecting numerous times to HP support tech, i was told to do a non destructive system restore., which i did, only to find my user profile gone, and all the dlls that run my applications no longer working. The space issues was from too many picture files, which i discovered my husband had uploaded about 1500 pictures of a friends wedding. so once i got rid of those pictures, the space issue was resolved. After being completely frustrated, and a lot of research, I read to "copy over" my old user profile files from under "documents and settings" to the new profile i created.. which I did. I also did a disk clean up and defrag.. and evidently have deleted a bunch of things i shouldn't have. I never actually recovered the user profile.. the weird thing is... is that the picture i had chosen associated with the old profile i'm trying to recover.. was recovered. totally weird voo doo stuff going on in the background i guess. so now i want to scream. i guess i can delete everything.. i've backed up all the stuff that was under my documents. so no big deal, however it's the applications that i'm worried about. when doing the non destructive restore, it took me back to factory settings.. so my norton 2007 internet security was replaced with the 60 day trial version of 2006 that came with the PC (which was purchased in december 2006 and in march 2007 i got some freaky virus and the geek squad folks did a d... If HP gave you a seperate uninstaller to use then run that, they usually have one and if you look through your CD you might be able to find it hidden somewhere. Then unplug the printer and all other USB devices - except USB a mouse and Keyboard if yours happen to be USB. Now still in Device Manager remove all USB hubs and then all USB Controllers. Now go here: http://www.viaarena.com/?PageID=403 and download and install the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers and reboot as request. Then reboot again after the USB controllers are reinstalled. Now download the latest printer drivers from HP's website for your model if you haven't done so yet and start the installation. Do not plug in the printer until prompt to do so or until the installation is totally complete. When plugging in the printer use a USB connector that is not near the one you used before - they are usually in pairs of two. If that Fails you can do a System Restore from Programs - Accessories - System to a date before the problems started and hope it works and doesn't recur. XP runs better with more RAM - if there's nothing wrong with it then add it back in. 3 more replies Answer Match 57.12% I had a company called Advanced Tech Support remotely tune up my computer. The "space issue" actually was caused by a surplus of photos I had in "MY PICTURES" which I thought I had removed after I burned them to a disk as well as video files located on another user profile. Anyhow, I contacted HP support and was advised to do a "non destructive" recovery and was completely assured that this would resolve my problem and all files and applications would remain in tact unharmed. Well that was crap. Once the recovery process was complete, all user information was gone. No user profiles existed on the login screen. I had to recreate a user profile. The recovery reverted everything to "factory settings", however all files were found on the old user profile which was located under "documents and settings" on the c:\ drive. Also, all applications still appeared under All Programs on the Start Men... Seems like almost once a month, I get a download that totally screws up AVG. You get red warning messages, everything shuts off, cats and dogs moo, cows fly, etc. Anyway, you would think a company like AVG would have a better tech help section. I have uninstalled and reinstalled my version of AVG at least 3 times in the last three months. The first time it took their tech support 2 weeks to answer my help question and it had nothing to do with the problem. I finally fixed it myself by reinstalling it. That seems like the only support advice you get from AVG as that is all they have told me to do. I sent them my problem again as it just happened and they their tech site told me that its a weekend and the reply might not be answered till monday. I did the usual uninstall(which by the way their uninstaller does not uninstall, it freezes about half way through and I have tried several times in a row and it freezes no matter how many you do) I had to remove it by using REVO then reinstalled it and it is working properly. I am afraid to update as it might go again, I have had Kaspersky for 10 yrs and have never had a problem except for usage. I have had AVG for a yr and a half and have had 6 problems with it already and I have renewed it about 4 months ago. 4 of the problems I have had since renewing. In the majority of these cases the caller lies by claiming to be an employee affiliated with Microsoft or Windows Support. However, there have been reports of callers claiming to be affiliated with major computer manufacturers such as Hewlett Packard, Lenovo and Dell or familiar security vendors like Symantec and McAfee. Typically, the scammers attempt to trick their victims into believing that their computer is infected, often by having them look at a Windows log that shows dozens of harmless or low-level error entries. The scammer instructs their victim to type "eventvwr" in the RUN box to open Windows Event Viewer and then scares them by pointing out all the warnings and error messages listed under the various Event Viewer categories. They offered to sell me a service to repair my computer and also to renew my "software warranty". This all seems very suspicious to me. But I don't know what to make of all of those errors, warnings, and criticals and, of course, if my computer is infected I want to fix it. Any advice is appreciated. Regards. Got my computer in April and all of a sudden it quit loading up after a restart or shut down. So they diagnose it over the phone as a bad power supply. I send it in, they have it for a week and a half and sent it back today, so I turned it on and it has the exact same problem. I call them back and they say well it must be the motherboard. I can not believe that they didn't at least test the thing out to see if it worked before sending it back to me. Especially when I emailed them last week to check the status of my computer and they told me it was still going through the diagnostic testing process. Wouldn't any type of diagnostic test show a bad motherboard, I mean thats kind of important isn't it? So now I have to send it back in to them, and be without my computer again for probably another 2 weeks. The entire process has been a headache and I have to call them back tomorrow yet again because they couldn't process my "RMA number" because they were having problems with their system tonight. I don't know how many people have had an issue with the phone call from tech support and they want access to your computer and then they essentially lock it and you need a password to get access again and the only way to get the password is to pay them.
A friend called tonight and she was taken in by the scam. Her immediate concern was to get her pictures and other personal documents off of the computer. I have no idea what these people do or if it is just a matter of getting the password and once input everything is okay?
Anyway I took her drive out and connected it to my computer and copied off all of her personal data to a flash drive. I ran Malwarebytes and selected only drive E, which is her drive, but the only problems it showed were on Drive C. I have no idea how it detected issues on Drive C as I had unselected Drive C and only selected Drive E for a scan.
So the first question is, is there a way around the password and to be able to remove it without reinstalling the OS. or recovering from a set of recovery disks?
Second is there a way to access the control panel on her drive with it still being connected to my computer to make a recovery disk for her drive, as like most people she didn't bother making a recovery disk set so if it has to be reformatted and the OS reinstalled she has no disks? It has a partition on the drive which I assume may the recovery information but the only visible folders are system volume information and recycle bin and I do have the appropri... Read more

A few days ago, my Yahoo email was hacked. I changed my password and after searching for computer assistance, I inadvertently thought an ad was a legitimate Yahoo technical support link. I called pc tech site at 1-888-727-0571(www.pctechsite.com). The technicians informed me to run some command line tools and used logmein123 to gain access to my computer. They installed Malwarebytes, Ccleaner, Microsoft Security Essentials and Security Shield. After I thought this was a scam, I called this company to complain, they said they would not refund my money. A little while later I received another phone call from "Marlin from the tech department at Microsoft" in New York (1-212-777-3457) informing me my computer had many errors including malicious downloads, was compromised and would crash. I questioned the legitimacy of this call and they hung up on me. After this call a black box appeared in the lower left-hand side of my computer screen. I assume this was them trying to access my computer again. I disabled imi_rescue.exe, Remote Assistance, and WebKit on my firewall which I assume were allowing logmein access to my computer and generated the below DDS text file. Could you please assist me with ensuring my computer is cleaned and no longer infected or compromised. My parent's submitted similar postings for their computers. I bought an XPS 8900 four months ago. I had to call Dell tech support on May 25th because it wouldn't reboot without going to the bsd. It's got worse. I tried two brand new hard drives and a new windows 10. The operating system won't load without going to a new bsd. All the machine does is loop to a new bsd. I've spent countless hours with tech support and nothing is working.
I'm at a level 3 tech but I can't get a response, email or phone call. It's June 30th now.
What's considered a reasonable time before something is done. Not over 30 days. Thank god I have a laptop at home. The experience has been horrible. As of right now Dell still hasn't done anything and no one will talk to me.

Hi Im ross and I have really let my computer go. I have a huge ammount of security issues with my computer. Ive seen you guys solve some major problems and I was hoping you could do the same for me. Since there are a number of them I decided to create my own thread instead of filing this under an existing one.

1. A severe infestation of full screen pop ups of "Top Searches on teh Web" and pop ups asking me to install anti pop up software but for a price. I know pop ups are everywhere but these are the same ones on a daily basis that occur whenever I am connected to the internet.

2. A pop up that opens up to 50 blank IE pages and locks up my computer, also occurs when I am connected to the internet.

3. A file called "Links" in my favorite is constanly replaced although I delete it.

4. My AIM text boxs lock up and turn all my text into capital letters, forcing me to use caps lock to return them to normal size.

5. My computer allows me to install McAfee anti virus but something then causes a critical error when I attempt to scan my computer. I assume this is related to an existing virus.

6. My floppy drive fails to read floppys and claims that they are all unformatted disks, I dont chock this up to a hardware error but some sort of error within my machine.

7. My CDRW drive reads cds but only writes blank static on cds.

I had wanted to just hose XP and re install but unfortunately I am in the process of moving and my XP disc is in storage. I know this ... Read more

A:Have you ever been scammed by a tech support scam?

The only scam that is current are calls from "Microsoft" telling the victim that they have been alerted to a virus infection on the computer and they will help the victim clean his machine for a fee. These are always from India. My sister-in-law got one recently but was forewarned by me and she told the guy to go soak his head.
I have seen these scam websites appear near the top when a search is made for "computer help" or "virus help", etc.
Of course there are various independent brick & mortar shops that will overcharge, etc.

Microsoft Warns Of Tech Support Phone Scam
I know this has been circulating for a while but my mother received a phone call while i was there .
I took the phone away from her and talked with the man to find out what was going on .

He would not take no for an answer
even when i told him that there was no computer at this address he insisted on retelling me he was from microsoft tech support and that the ip had been flashing red at their end and that it was a virus problem .
Even after i had repeated that there was no computer to get infected he said when i read my emails all lights were flashing at their end

Hi

I was recently duped and need to find out if my PC will have any issues as a result.

One of the programs on my computer crashed and I agreed to send in a Windows Error report. A few days after this (not sure if it was coincidental or not) I received a telephone call pertaining to be from Windows Technical Support. They told me I had a problem with my PC and gave me directions on how to access the event viewer. I did this and they showed me that there were a lot of "errors" within my PC.

They told me that they could help sort this out. They never asked for any money. They told me they needed access to my computer. They asked me to download a program AA-V3.exe from Ammyy. I did this but it would not let the person connect.

They then asked me to go to a website ShowMyPC. Which again I did believing they were from Windows. We connected through this site - the site said that it was connected anyway. The guy on the phone said that there was a problem and he couldn't access the PC - it must be running really slow. He then asked me for my passwords. At this point I was concerned and told him I did not believe he was from Windows and did not give him my passwords. I put the phone down and closed down the PC. Since then they have rung me back 10 times and I have put the phone straight down.

I have had remote access before for support reasons at work and during these sessions I have been able to see the cursor move. During my experience with the fake Windows Te... Read more

For a number of years I have been a user of Eset NOD on all our computers. Yesterday Eset proved themselves to be clearly the best and locked me in as a loyal customer.

The Tracur Trojan infected my computer. Eset effectively prevented attempts by the Trojan to communicate but was unable to remove it in spite of a number of long in-depth scans. The scans consistently found and removed "Infiltrated" files but the infection persistently returned. Spybot found nothing and Adaware was also ineffective permanently removing it. I called Eset (on the tech service number that is refreshingly readily found on their web site) and was pleasantly rewarded with, a not unreasonable wait time even though the recording said it might be a long time, truly competent and very knowledgeable technicians, technicians with English as their native language, and a resolution to the problem. I did not note how long the total phone time was but it was not short. Nevertheless, there was no charge as this support is available to all customers.

They successfully removed the Trojan but found it is a new variant. They had to do it manually as the software tools did not recognize this latest variant. I was also impressed when I found out the information discovered will appear in a signature update in a few days.

I want to note, another major player in the security arena charges \$99.99 for exactly what Eset did for no charge and they use technicians in India (I asked when researching the alt... Read more

My grandfather got taken in by a Microsoft Windows Support Scam and I'm fairly certain that his laptop's got a bug that I can't get rid of.

What happened:

He got a popup (while using Internet Explorer and after downloading an Adobe update) that said there was a security issue and that he needed to call a number for Windows Firewall Service.
(I looked up the number and apparently other people have been taken in by this scam. Here it is on a Microsoft forum:

This is what the Popup said:

""windows firewall service has been stopped due to virus/adware on your computer. please visit www.scannow.com/support or call toll free 1 888 447 4192 for support. root-kits/spyware may have caused the security breach on your network location. call toll free 1 888 447 4192 for technical assistance."

So he called the number (1-888-447-4192) not knowing it was a scam and they said they were from Windows and that they needed remote access to his laptop to solve the security issue, which he gave them. (He said he did not give them any personal information, however.)

After he told me what happened, I checked out his laptop. He had about a dozen popups that wouldn't close and some malware programs were added, which I have removed.

I have a win7 machine that is not ..working.. it wont serve internet pages specifically.

I can ping stuff and the tray icon says connected with internet access, and the network map looks fine.

*Yet* I cannot access web pages. I have spent 2 weeks with At&t and now they are telling me I have to sign up for a year of 'superior' support.

I am certain this is one of those things like when your Proxy Server gets wonked but you just gotta turn it back.

That has happened to this computer several times prior to the current problem.

Can anyone help me solve this riddle. Then I can call At&t back and tell them how the problem is fixed.

Its got to be some quirky setting. I'm sure of it.
