Is it possible to limit the connection speed of devices connected to a router?

Q: Is it possible to limit the connection speed of devices connected to a router?

I'm thinking of buying a wireless router for my son who has a laptop but he ALWAYS downloads huge files (games or whatever he does) when he uses my computer so is there a way to limit the bandwidth he gets when he connects to the router through his laptop?

A: Is it possible to limit the connection speed of devices connected to a router?

Look for a wireless router with traffic shaping and QoS. From my search, a Billion 7400 has traffic shaping. Also, the Actiontec MI424WR has it as well. Here's the shot from the Actiontec configuration pages.

-Here is my setup so far. I have a vista machine with 2 lan cards, one from motherboard, one on pci. The lan from motherboard is connected to the WAN port on my router. I have alltel wireless internet that uses ICS through that. The lan card on my pci bus is connected to a LAN port on the same router. When i am not using ics i disable the lan on my motherboard and vice versa. I am using the second LAN on my pci bus that is connected to one of the LAN ports on my router so my computer can use MCE and DIRECTV2PC. I have another line connected to a LAN port on the same router going to a switch which is connected to my 360 and my directv receiver.
-Here is the problem. Say im using DIRECTV2PC and the xbox gets turned on, what happens is i lose connection to my directv and my computer only sees the xbox and vice versa. I am confused on why that is, it should see both at the same time and not lose connection to any one of them right?

A:I lose connection to some devices on my switch connected to my router.

whoa man never heard of that kind of set up before. try connecting your internet to the WAN port on the router and connecting the rest of your stuff to the inputs on the router. its a little less complicated this way.
sounds like your computer is controlling your internet and getting confused... hope this info is usefull.

This is my first post and glad to be here among experts. I will list my issue, please tell me what information you need to be of assistance.

I have a net gear WNR2000vs with the latest firmfware to date. I have two wired devices connected: 1. my pc 2. xbox, and also one wireless device connected 1. my cell phone via wi fi.

Before I updated the firmware:
I would hard wire my 360 and pc to the router together. My 360 online play would work fine for about 10 minutes then my connection on my 360 and pc would drop. My network status would say 'resolving issue'.

After updated the firmware:
I now have my 360 and pc hard wired to the router together. These two seems to work fine together. When I try to connect a wireless device my connection drops. My pc resolves the issue and regains connection, but if I try to navigate a webpage or download anything from the wireless device then it starts the whole dropping connection thing again.

I'm not sure what information you guys would like but here's some basics. Thanks!

Hello,

I use Windows XP Home SP3 and I have Wireless network using Buffalo WHR-HP-G54. All computer in the network are connected wirelessly. I am the administrator; I mean that I am the only one who has access to the router. the their clients that connected to my router are over using the internet by downloading so I need to limit thier speed. I can access the router and install any program in my computer but I can not force the other to install a program and they can uninstall it. I don't know if the router has option to limit the speed of other users.

Note: I am connected to the router Wirelessly too.

A:Will the Pc1x1 connection limit the speed of this Device

It really depends on the drive(s) you are connecting to it. The PCIE-1x slot if (1.0) will have a single direction max rate of aprox 266MB/s and if (2.0) 532MB/s.

This will be fine for 7200rpm Hard Disks but if you were planning on one or more 500MB/s SSD's then the bus-width would limit you.

The devices only claim to be compatible with a PCI-E x1 (2.0) interface.

Hi,
In the past 3 days I've noticed that I periodically get randomly redirected via link bucks when browsing the internet. It was odd when it happened on my nexus 7 tablet but also has started happened on the 2 laptops that are connected to my router.
There's no specific pattern, time or website but it is certainly happening on websites that wouldn't use link bucks (Facebook/university e-mail). I have security software installed on all devices (lookout on nexus 7, MSE on windows 7 laptops).
Any advice anyone could offer would be appreciated, its getting annoying now!
Thanks!
P.s. - at the same time my nexus 7 stopped connecting to Google now with a connection error, but only when connected to my network, on other networks it works fine

Welcome aboard  Try resetting your router.... Turn the computer off.On your router, you'll find a pinhole marked "Reset".Keep pushing the hole, using a pencil, or a paperclip until all lights briefly come off and on.NOTE. Simple router disconnecting from a power source will NOT do.Restart computer and check for redirections.NOTE. You may need to re-check your router security settings, as described HERE

I have tried to research this and am not finding the information I need to answer the above question so hope a networking expert can help.

I recently for the first time went over my monthly data cap for broadband and looking it to it a bit more it looks like a lot of the programs my kids are using are hogging the bandwidth. I don't really want to pay for more bandwidth (as I already pay way above average as I live in a small rural village) but I don't want to restrict too much what my kids are doing.

The solution to me seems to be to see if I can monitor and if possible control to some extent the data on each of the IP connected to the router if that is at all possible.

I have looked at my router settings and unfortunately they do not permit anything more than traffic monitoring and there are no custom firmwares to allows additional features of any use.

Is there any software that I could use to do this?

Can anybody help at all with any advice about whether this can be done?

A:Can i monitor and control multiple router connected devices data???

It is almost impossible to restrict the total usage of bandwidth. To my knowledge there are no setting for that in normal routers/gateways.

Morning, guys.

I have GPON optitcs coming to my house(FTTH). Optic cable connects to Alcatel-Lucent box. Box is connected to router, router to wifi AP. It looks like this:

---(optics)-----> [Alcatel-Lucent box] <----(cat 5e ethernet)----> [TP-Link LAN Router] <----(cat 5e ethernet)----> [D-Link Wi-Fi Router] < - - - b/g/n mixed wifi - - - > {computers}

Provider says I should have 100 mbit/s internet connection. If I connect my notebook directly to Alcatel-Lucent box via ethernet cable, i get 96.4 mbit/s down and about 50 up(i'll post a speedtest pic soon).

If I connect notebook to Lan router directly:

If I connect it to Wi-Fi AP using LAN cable(say, it's the same):

How can I maximize the speed? Ideas?

Thanks.

I can connect to the internet and browse but after anywhere from a minute to ten minutes my connection speed drops or i get disconnected all together. I only have this problem at school in my dorm.
It works fine on my wifi at home and in other buildings on campus. I know nothing is wrong with my dorm building because my roommate who also uses windows 7 has no problems connecting and staying connected.
I have talked to the I T dept. at school and they didnt help much at all. I have run a Malwarebytes full scan and it didnt find anything. I have disabled McAfee and the problem still persists. I have also changed all settings on my wifi card to the most aggressive possible and disabled all power saving options.
When i run a diagnostic on my connection while im having problems i generally get one of two errors.
"the connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the internet is broken" or
"the default gateway is not available"
If i get the second error it says its been fixed and my connection will speed up again for about another 5 minutes and then the cycle repeats.

If anyone has any ideas on what it could be please let me know because im pretty good with computers and this has me completely stumped

Hello, I am a first timer on any forum but am lost at what to do to fix my problem. I am using my iPhone to access the net to try and find solutions.

A couple of days ago my laptop was connecting to the net fine then later in the day we tried again and couldn't access the net. It has a strong router connection at home and also at another family members but no Internet access.

I've spent a very long time with my ISP twice with no success. Ive googled and tried things for hours. Its running Vista Home Basic. Say local connection only, started saying the router is unidentified, tried the ipconfig thing in cmd, it wont ping, media disconnected errors show and the error on the web page is 105 unable to resolve the servers DNS address.

Please let me know what else I need to let you know to try and fix this. Thank you

When attached to my Belkin router, my network connection shows "Connected to <router name here>". But when I connect my LAN to my TP-Link router, it doesn't show that extra connection in my network connection?

I'm using an old dos software that somehow needs this "connected to router" shown in the network connection. I think the software needs to somehow "dial" to the router or "listen" to the dial tone or something. How do I make it appear? Some kind of vpn or something?

In Windows, go to Start/Run and type ncpa.cpl and press enter. In Network Connections you should see the Local Area Connection. right click it and choose Status It should say you are connected. If your Ethernet cable is plugged in and it is connected to your router.

I have 7 devices connected to my Netgear Router 600/3700v2 and the devices keep disappearing. I believe I have found the solution. Connect to your Netgear Router (you will see BASIC and ADVANCED options) and select the ADVANCED settings. Click the tab below ADVANCED SETTINGS and in the drop down menu select UPnP. You will see on the top of the screen ADVERTISEMENT TIME TO LIVE - this setting DEFAULTS TO "4" which is okay for "normal" home use (well, it didn't work for me). This setting is what controls your attached devices. If you keep losing them, try increasing the settings until they remain visible. I tried 5 first - no go. Then I tried 8 and I haven't lost the devices since. Hope this works for you!

I have a win7 Home premium sp1 computer hooked through a D-link switch DGS1008G to a Belkin N150 router model # F9K1001V4 and from there to Hughesnet modem HN9000 with all wired connections at this time. There are several other things hooked to the switch (radio transmitter and endec emergency alert system device) that I access via the computer at ip addresses 192.168.2.3 and .4 respectively.

I had a power outage and afterwards the router went wonky. When I connect directly from the pc to the modem, I have no internet problems at all. But now when I go from the pc directly to the router, or through the switch to the router, the router light is solid amber, and 192.168.2.1 shows NOT connected. The internet connection actually works ok sometimes and sometimes does not connect at all, but regardless, it still shows amber and not connected.

I have done various sequences the Belkin people suggested, including power reset the modem, then the router, then reset factory defaults on the router then clone mac address on the router, but the internet connection still shows not connected, and amber. It may flash blue for a second during reset, but then goes back to solid amber.

I think I have checked all the cables one by one using the pc to modem direct connection and gotten internet connection, or connection through the switch to my other devices ok.

Is the computer without internet connected through a wire or through wireless?

If wired, try unplugging the ethernet cable from the back of the computer, shut down the computer, and plug the ethernet cable back in while the computer is still turned off. Then, turn back on the computer, see if that works.

If not, try restarting the router.

Hi!

I have a problem that i need help with on Windows 7 x64.

I have a wireless router that works just fine, same is the connection to the internet when I connect the cable.
When I switch the internet cable to PC, I cannot connect to any web page, I receive the error: "The web page is not responding."
My internet works through cable with a static IP. The details from the network adapter are the same as the router (IP adress, Subnet mask, Default Gateway etc. all the same) and I can see in the notification area that my computer is connected to the internet, but when I open the browser to connect to a webpage I get the same error, when I press the button "Fix network connection" from the browser it says that my connection is good but it appears to be a problem with the site. When I open the Windows troubleshooter it doesn't find any errors; in the adapter status i can see that I receive/send packages; in Command Prompt I type "ping -t <My IP adress>" and I don't get any "request timed out."
Basically my PC is connected to the internet, but the browser doesn't connect to any site. When I switch the cable back into the wireless router and connect to it, I can connect to any site.....
I also tried changing the homegroup, changing the adapter priority in advanced settings, restarting the computer multiple times.....but no success. I don't know what to do next....reinstall the Windows maybe?

Hello,

My current setup is a Netgear WGR614v3 router connected to an apartment complex network, servicing my wired desktop and a wireless laptop. Both machines run Windows XP and both experience the same slow down whether the connection is wired or wireless, while through the router.

Up until about a week ago, my connection speed through the router was equivalent to a direct connection to the port in my room. Recently, however, my speed while connected through the router has dropped below half that of a direct connection.

Things I've tried:

1) check with other people in same complex to see if they experience the same issue. My roomate, who has his own port, uses the same router as I do and has no speed issues.

2) Check router configuration. MTU is the same as before, 1500. I even completely re-setup my entire router via a factory reset and this did not resolve the issue.

3) Check Ports on router, in case some ports are damaged. I switched my cable through all the ports without any results.

4) Check CAT cables. The same cable that I use for my desktop provides full connectivity when going to the wall and I also tried different cables with no results.

5) Checked windows settings. XP firewalls were both disabled and no settings were any different than they were previous to the problem. I also played around with the link speed settings, changing between 100/10 full/half duplex.

Since your accessing the same routers as your roommate move your wired PC to the port that his stuff is wired to and move his to yours if his starts doing the slowdown then you know its a bad port in the router or a bad router if yours continues to slow down I would check your PC.

Honestly from what you put here though my only thought is sometime last week you got some virus or something that has now caused your PC to run slower.

Is a router with 11 mbps faster than one with 56mbps? I have sypatico with 100 mbps speed and im trying to find a router that will allow for high speed transfers. does router speed make a difference, does download and upload speed all rely on how fast my sympatico is?

A:Question about router speed and internet connection

No. The router normally allows the full speed from your ISP-provider (which is hardly ever more than 2MB anyway). So any router would do for that matter.
The switch-part of the router allows traffic between PCs on that netweork. That is limited only by the Switch-speed (either 10MB or 100MB) and/or the PC's NIC speed, also normally 10/100MB. Some more expensive routers allow network-speeds of 1GB, provided all the PC-NICs are also 1GB.

The choke point is the ISP not the router. What are you supposed to be getting from them?

Speed

We recently had Verizon HiSpeed (speeds up to 768 Kbps) installed with Westell(Model 327W) modem/router connected to our desktop.
When we place cursor over the "Network" connection in lower right of screen (of desktoop) it states:
The Internet (2)
Spreed 10.0 Mbps
Sent 141,926 bytes
Received 921,712 bytes

However, in the laptop, when we place the cursor over the "Network" connection, we see:
Speed 36Mbps
Signal Strength Excellent
Status Connected.

What we would like to know is why does our desktop show SPEED of "10.0 Mbps"

while the laptop shows:
SPEED of "36.0 Mbps?"
(Connection speed on both shows: download 705 kbps; upload 133 kbps.)

Is this something to be very worried/concerned about? We are senior citizens and the speed when we connect to Internet appears to be fine as far as we are concerned.
Thanks

My dad currently has DSL service through AT&T. When he first purchased and set up the service, he was given a Siemens SpeedStream modem. Over time the connection speed has slowed to a crawl; I'm not sure if this is due to the modem itself, the computer's network card, or something else entirely. He's seen the different routers for sale at computer stores and neither of us were sure if they would be compatible with his current setup, or even if buying one would have any kind of benefit speed-wise. He doesn't want to upgrade or change services if he can avoid it. Any thoughts?

I just installed my mom's wireless router for her. Long story short, it took six hours. Who knew that the only WEP key that would work correctly is the first of the four? Why even give me for if three of them don't work.

Anyway, I'm terribly concerned about this new fangled wireless internet. I have two Bellsouth Fastaccess DSL connections in my house. The one I'm posting from now is mine and a trip to dslreports.com tells me that I'm sitting pretty at a 2980kbps download speed. My upload speed is a meager 319kbps, but that's not what the problem here is.

My mom's DSL, post-wireless connection, is chugging along at about 150kbps down. That's awful. Her upload speed is fine, it's in the 290's. I checked her speed before I switched her over to wireless and it was going just fine at about 2900Kbps. I was using her connection for a long time because mine was accidentally cancelled by the geniuses at Bellsouth. And I never experienced terrible connection speeds.

Wireless isn't suppose to do this to a connection, right? Are there any settings I'm missing the resolve this issue? The icon in her system tray says that it's connected at like 54Mbps.

We've got two laptops and a printer on the wireless network. One laptop is running Windows 2000 and the other is running Windows Vista. The router is a "Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router" with.. get this.. "Speed Booster". It's 2.4Ghz, what... Read more

A:Wireless router downgrading my connection speed, any solutions?

If your devices aren't getting pretty old they should support the more secure WPA-PSK encryption. In my opinion it's also easier to use. All 4 WEP keys work, but "mix and match" doesn't work. Whatever you specify for key n in the router has to be specified for key n in any wireless adapters. I've used the first key and all four keys, but assume that you can use any one or combination you want.

Turbos and speedboosters and draft n are a little worrisome because they can do more harm than good if all devices don't match. Since you are having bandwidth problems I suggest setting everything to just use the standard 802.11g 54Mbps until you get things sorted out.

What download results are you getting on the other wireless laptop?

Make sure you have the latest wireless adapter drivers (from the laptop's manufacturer if integrated), that there are no other wireless networks in range on the same or close channel, and have the laptop in the same room as the router for testing.

Probably be worth checking to see if Linksys has a firmware upgrade for the router.

It has been acting up big time in the last couple days. The speed (Mbps) fluncuates up and down, and constantly disconnects me. I have tried resetting the modem, but it will still do it after some time. I have the newest filmware. Why did it just start acting up now?

It has got to be the placement of the router. I have it in its own room on the same floor as my laptop, but its on a desk about 3 ft high. Perhaps on the ceiling?

There THe belkin modem/gateway shouldnt limit your speed capabilities. You should be able to find the speed listed inside the modem's status page. To do this..
Click start>run>In run type CMD
In the black window type IPCONFIG and then enter. Note down your default gateway.
Open a browser window and enter the gateway's address into it. Click go
This should take you to your gateways graphical user interface.
Look for a status tab or see if it lists connection speeds on the general page.

Also you can test speeds at different sites. Google search broadband speed test and choose 1 of the millions of sites

Hi all, I have a Dell Latitude CPX650 w/XP Home. My Dell has only 1 USB port in the back, it being of the 1.1 variety but I have been able to use 2.0 hardware to it and they have been compatible w/no problems for 3 years plus. I added a 4-port USB hub and have for the most part used 3 of those ports pretty much all of the time-and occasionally all 4- into my 1 on the back of the Dell for over 1-1/2 years now and also have had no problems. I bought a chill pad here recently that came with a built in 4-port hub in the base. If I connect the 4-port into 1 of the ports on the first 4-port hub, should I expect problems? Is there a rule of thumb or a common practice into how many ports can be extended from or put into 1 port? Thanks guys...

A:Is there limit on # of USB devices into 1 port?

The issue is POWER consumption. Each port is limited to 500ma current draw.
Using a USB hub that has its own power source can escape that limit.

The usual devices that cause problems are Ext HDs (should be obvious; more power to spin the platters).

All USB 2.0 devices are downward compatible to 1.1

The easiest way to delegate bandwidth is through your router. Most recent routers have some type of QoS (Quality of Service) built in.

In Windows 2000, and early versions of Windows XP, there was a hard limit of 10 USB MIDI devices that could ever be connected to a single system. This limit was because the drivers for such devices were enumerated in registry keys with names of the form

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32\midiN

where N is empty or a single digit. Each of these keys would have an associated value that would be the name of the driver associated with a MIDI device; when that table filled up, no new MIDI devices could be added.

Recently, I mistakenly installed an extra MIDI device on my machine, and to my surprise it worked. When I looked at the registry keys, they were all still there, but they now all refered to WDMAUD.DRV instead of referring directly to the various device drivers. This happened on Windows XP SP2 and is presumably the same way on SP3.

So I am wondering whether there has been a quiet change to how USB MIDI drivers are handled, and whether WDMAUD.DRV is some kind of general-purpose forwarding program that figures out which driver is relevant. If so, are there new limits on the number of USB MIDI devices, and what are they?

Or am I completely mistaken about what's going on and my devices are working only by sheer coincidence?

A:Has the 10-entry limit changed for USB MIDI devices

As far as I know, all USB controllers should be able to support up to 127 devices. I have never heard of that 10 device limit, though that doesn't mean it never existed.

My internet provider is Telus, I am pretty sure I have a 1.5MB/S Connection, or more. So if anyone could help me It would be greatly appreciated,

Hi,

I'm very puzzled, for some reason my Internet speed on this computer has limited itself to 3 Mb or ~2980 kb/s, and I have a 20 Mb/1 Mb connection.

There s nothing wrong with the upload, and other computers can attain near 20 Mb download on the connection.

I can't find any sign of any kind of infection of the PC. Run lots of different anti spy/virus/other programs, but found nothing but a few tracking cookies.

I've monitored the connection to see if part of the line was hijacked, used 3 different programs over 2 days to be certain, but still no unexpected traffick.

I have both a Wireless and a Wire connection, normally they are both on, but tried disabling the one an the other but still exactly 3 Mb.

Anyone have any ideas about what it could be?

I have a son who uses an insane amount of bandwidth due to downloading crap. We have a fast connection, so he feels he should take initiative of it, and it annoys me quite a bit. I am wanting to punish him. Seriously, though, is there anyway to limit the bandwidth, or rather the transfer speed, another computer can use that is connected to the network? Not a set amount (such as how some ISPs only allow a set amount of transfer per month), but the actual transfer speeds. For example: we can download at 1100kbps (depending on server), but I would like to set his computer to only be able to use 100kbps of that so it doesn't strain the other computers in our household. I don't have the exact models of the modem and router I am using, as I am not at home, but they are both LINKSYS brands. Any help would be appreciate.

A:How to limit internet speed on LAN?

If you want to mess with Linux, there's a few tools out there which are free to do bandwidth limiting. But then you have to throw up another box on your network with additional network interfaces. Or you'll have to get a network switch or router which supports QoS. Either way, you're spending money on hardware.

Hi all,

Hoping someone can help me. I'm not the world's greatest computer girl but I know enough to be good at following directions

I have Comcast internet including a modem and router, both installed by the company around 6 months ago (details below). A few times recently, I will suddenly lose connectivity. My laptop wireless connection shows that I am connected but "No Internet Connection." Laptop browsers, as well as my consoles (so I know it's not just the PC) all show DNS errors.

RCA modem
Model DCM425
MAC 001E69165148

Netgear wireless router
MAC A021B796DCE0
Of course it seems to happen on Friday afternoons when I get home from work, requiring a service visit on Sunday at the earliest, and resulting in potential service charges and (WORST) a whole weekend with no internet.

I've spoken to multiple Comcast reps and all they do is push a new signal to the box. When that doesn't work, it seems they just want to get me off the phone asap, and schedule a service call. Last time, the guy came to my house, and ended up solving it by unplugging everything. He said to try this and "pray." Well I've tried to no avail. I'm piggybacking on someone else's connection now and hoping they don't kick me off before my conference calls (and gaming <_<) this weekend.

I'll be eternally grateful if someone can help me. Let me know any info I can provide.

Thanks!!

It works very well but I have a limit of simultaneous peers connected. I cannot connect more than 8 devices to my hosted network.
It is not a software limit in this windows API because I changed the maxNumberOfClients in HostedNetwork.
It is also not a hardware limitation because I have at least 12 peers on Linux with the same wifi card.
I have experimented this limitation with at least 5 emitting different laptops (Hp, 2*Asus, Dell, Lenovo).
Do you know how I could avoid the limitation ?

But, the highest download speed I can achieve is 300Kbps. I don't understand why. I have a new dlink router and modem in one. The network is all wired. Does anyone have any idea what cause this issue?

A:Download Upload speed limit

speedtest.net is the correct speed

downloading things is not just dependend on your connection but also on the connection where you are downloading from

for example if your connection is 2000kbps and the opposite connection has an upload speed of 500kbps you wont be able to download faster then 500kbps

also if your provider offers you a connection speed of 3mbps you will never get that exact ammount due to loss on the line its dependend how far away your house is to the main line (telephone central) and how far your modem is from the isra point in the house all those things together create a speed loss so nobody actually gets the maximum speed

Are you sure provider gives you the full amount? How do you know? I would go to an online test like speedtest.net to confirm what you are actually getting.

The DL speed is set by the providers hardware, you simply get what they give you. You can throttle your DL, but why would you want to?

DTIM Interval: 1 ( Default: 1, Range: 1 - 255)
Fragmentation Threshold: 2346 ( Default: 2346, Range: 256 - 2346)
RTS Threshold: 2347 ( Default: 2347, Range: 0 - 2347)
"
Can someone explain to me which one of these can limit network speed?

Thanks,

A:How can I limit my wireless network speed

None of the above. The wireless settings aren't designed to limit network throughput.

If you really want to throttle the Internet speed, you'll need a router that has real active bandwidth management, which I don't think is offered on that router.

Yes, it's really true. XP-Home has a 5 connection limit, and XP-Pro and Win-2K has a 10 connection limit.

Okay I live in the dorms in college.(well actually they are not the dorms but overflow apartments because the dorms were full, not sure if it matters but thought i should add) I brought my wireless netgear router with me to school to plug my Ps3 into and to download certain things the school blocks on the regular wireless internet.

So I plug my router into the jack in the room and then run wireless to my laptop and wired to my Ps3. I set up the router and it determined the internet connection is DHCP . I set the router to obtain I.P. and DNS addresses dynamically and it won't work. then i set it to use static addresses. ( the address that it picked up dynamically ) It then works for awhile, sometimes a few hours and sometimes less than an hour. To get it to work again all I have to do is set it back to dynamic wait a couple minutes and move it back to static. When I lose connection my playstation says its a DNS error.

my roommate plugs his laptop directly into the jack on the wall because he doesn't have a wireless card and he hasn't said anything about losing his connection. But once i plugged him into the router he loses his connection just like me.

I am sure i am forgetting something important if anymore info is needed I will add. Please help it is really getting annoying changing the setting on the router

Hi guys,

I am on a network that automaticaly lowers my data transfer speed to 15kb/s if I go over the 85 kb/s mark for more than a few minutes.
This is a pain because myself and my boss should have unlimited access but the current system doesn't allow mac filters etc..

So my question is, is there a program or windows setting that will limit the speed of my network connection to 80 kb/s so that we wont go over the limit and therefore wont be hit with the cap?

Thanks all for the help! Support free information!

A:Solved: Limit speed on local computer.

You can't undo locally what is done remotely. In other words if you don't have access to change the cap or the app doesn't have the granularity to separate group caps, nothing you can do locally will effect that.

What might work, but effects all access, is to set your nic to 10mb half duplex.

Hi there,

As this is my first post, I'll go through a quick presentation. My name is Patrick, 26, living in Switzerland.

I'm looking for a few help to solve an... unusual question : I'm quite sure there is tons of topics on "how to increase my download speed", my wish is to "decrease it"

Well, the reason is simple : I do have several machines on my private network. And when I do download files on my main machine from servers which are really fast (for example Megaupload or similar), I do saturate my 10Mb connection with 1.25 MB/s, which means other machines has strictly nothing left. In fact, they even cannot print a Google page.

I found some documentation on "Advanced QoS options" at Param?tres de QoS avanc?s (in french, sorry, there should be a translation), which seems to be dedicated to Windows Server versions. I tried to use the same on Windows Vista (the options exists and can be changed), but this had no effect at all on my download speed in Firefox.

I set the value to the least (0 = 64Kb / sec) but was still downloading at 1.2 MB/sec. I tried to reboot the machine, in case this option would take effect only after it, but this option really seems to have no effect at all.

Is it something that indeed works only on the server edition of windows ?
Is there another way on windows to limit the inbound internet connection ?
Would you recommend any free software which can make something similar ?

Thank you in advance, any help will be f... Read more

Hello, Your best bet is to QOS at your router.

What router do you have? Depending ion the router, if supported i'd recommend using dd-wrt firmware on it.

So post up your router, and we'll go from there.

They download big files and they take all my speed how can i limit the speed ?

A:Easy way to limit my wifi speed (clients getting greedy)

It depends on your wireless router, many will allow you to create a 'guest account' that you can then limit in whatever way you want. Just google 'throttle guest wifi'

There's a ton of information on the subject.
If your router doesn't support it, I don't know of any other way though.

Hi Guys,

I haven't been on this forum until now.

I have a Equallogic PS400 SAN, connected to a Powerconnect 6248 gigbit switch. Everything runs FINE on 2k8 server, Windows 2012r2 and VMware ESXi 5.1.

I created a iSCSI target for my wifes new pc which is based on a Gigbabyte MB, Gigabyte-970a-ud3, with a AMD FX-6100 hexacore CPU 4.2 Ghz , 16gGB DDR3 ram. Boot disks are a pair of SSD 240GB drives striped for even more speed.

Local storage is 4 2TB WD sata3( 6gbs) disks in a stripe for speed. I added a PCIe expansion card for a extra pair of 2TB disks (software striped) also SataIII (6gbs sec)
The network is a quad port Intel vt-100 server class nic. I have NO latency or retransmits on the network, Flow control is on and set up per Equallogic best practices.

There is 2.7 TB of movie ISO's on the 2TB stripe i want to move off to an iSCSI 6TB volume on my san.

Got it?

Here is the kicker , I can easlily move the data from the 2TB stripe to the 8TB stripe using robocopy, teracopy , etc. and it hauls butt and i get 120MB/ sec internal to internal SATA.
Theorectically (and in practice as i have a 2k8 server and 2012 server) i should be able to get 125MBs/ sec on my iSCSI san. I can never get anything more than 12.5MBs / Sec to the iSCSI target, the network transfer maxes out at 100mbs period. No matter what I do , the max network transfer of copying files is 100mbs and 12.5MBs from the windows 7 box. All of my other systems easily get the 100MBs /sec . I read tha... Read more

QoS (Quality of Service) Configuration
QoS prioritizes important data on your network such as multimedia content and voice-over-IP (VoIP) so it will not be interfered with by other data being sent over the network. Based on 802.11e, this feature can be turned on or off and you can choose the acknowledgement mode you want to use. If you plan to stream multimedia content or use VoIP on your network, the QoS feature should be enabled.

For reasons beyond explanation here, the girl downstairs is using a port on my router. It seems as though she is likely downloading TONS of music as her light is almost constantly blinking when it is on, rarely solid. I am getting high pings in my online games and some "hiccups" when I never did before. I'd also like to keep the download limit within reason from my IP. Is there any way to "cap" the bandwidth going through her port to get my fluid online back, and to maybe deter so much usage and hogging of the connection. To deal with her directly is rather tedious and bothersome........an only child who you'd think thought she was the queen herself. Thanks

Some routers have that ability. There are some programs that can do it as well although I'm not sure how that works when you're not going through another server to get to the internet.

My questions are:

I noticed that the modem occasionally goes down and i need to reset it to function again.

2. Is there a limit for the number of connections in the modem/router/switch?
3. Can you suggest a better set-up for my network?

I'm only really looking to limit his speed so that I don't have any of these problems anymore.

Using the router; "Wireless-N 150 ADSL2+ Modern Router model; DGN1000".

A:How to limit someone's bandwidth on my Router? (Netgear)

Lookup the manual for that router and find the QoS information.

You can then set the QoS to downgrade streaming video and leave everything else alone. It WILL impact all streaming video however.

I am getting very slow speed when he is downloading or watching youtube.

So I want to share only half of the broadband speed (512kbps), but how ?
Is there any free software to do that ? (without adwares and ads)

See if your NIC @ ethernet-2 has the option to enable QoS. This would allow you to cap the bandwidth on the link for specific protocols like streaming

How many USB devices can I have connected?

OK: sounds like a dumb question.
Everyone shopuld know that you can have upto 128 devices all conncted by USB - right...?

I use USB extension wires: these seem to cause problems.

If I want to extend the lenght... should I simply connect several USB hubs?

Are USB extentions known to cause problems?

If I have 5 USB hubs connected all of of each other: will I have problems when I connect a device to the last one?

Thanks.

A:How many USB devices can I have connected?

I think the main two considerations are power and traffic.

Clearly, power hungry devices will require at least some powered USB hubs.

The more traffic (e.g., networking means lots of traffic), the more likelihood for clashes and slowdowns.

I'm pretty sure there are maximum recommended distances for USB, but I do not have such info handy.

Hey guys, I'm really hoping you can help me out. If possible please keep it simple. My brain is fried.

So I moved to Japan and dont speak a word of Japanese. I managed to wrangle a meeting and get a modem installed. They also added a router that I found in the apartment. It both worked after the two guys fiddled with the router physically.

My phone and tablet and ps4 were all connected and worked like a charm. I had to unplug both router and modem to put in a multiplug. After replugging both went on and only my ps4 connected. The phone and tablet go into a connecting ip loop. If I unplug router and modem and replug they connect to the first device and do loop with the remaining two.

Using static ip on my android devices shows them as connected but they cant go onto any websites or use online apps.

I have no pc or laptop and Im not sure how to hard reset

I have Linksys wireless router, and I've been using that for awhile, no problems with it.

I had a 50 foot CAT5 cable sitting around and as well, an old D-Link DI-604 wired router, so I decided to turn the router, into a switch so can I hardwire my Desktop and PS3.

I have the Port 2 Linksys router outputting the internet to the WAN D-Link wired router using the 50 foot cable, and then using Port 1 and 2 to my Desktop and PS3, respectively.

Everything on the Desktop and PS3 side seems to be great, i've noticed web pages loading times decrease.

Except that the computer which is hardwired to my Linksys wireless router, is awfully snail slow.

Is it because the D-Link router is a Router and not a switch, that this problem is happening?

Edit - I've been reading that this is more complicated then a simple plug and go. I have to disable the DHCP and everything, everytime I try to log into my D-Link router, it'll get into the routers main page, but nothing will load after I try to click 'LAN' or 'WAN' or 'DHCP'

Edit 2 - Alright, so I have changed my 2nd router to disable the DHCP and changed the IP to be different from my 1st router, and everything seems good except for one thing. When I plug in my PS3 to either Port 3 or Port 4, the whole network is crippled, and nothing connects. Very interesting. OK this is complicated so bear with me!

First time poster as well so please be gentle!

I have Telewest Cable Broadband working with a Linksys wireless G (wrt54g) router. It works a treat and i have the "improved" antennae from Linksys to boost the signal a bit as well.

I recently signed up with Vonage for a VoIP provider and the router they provide is wired (the Linksys rt41p2 router) and im trying to get this connected to my wireless network with a seperate Gateway or wireless hub. Im pretty sure this will work if i put the access point in infrasturcture mode (im thinking the linksys WAP54G access point) and conenct the VoIP router to the Access point (with DHCP disabled so its technically a switch) and then it can pick up the signal from the router over a wireless network.

The router seems to support this as it has a VoIP over wireless option in the setup of the latest BIOS flash.

What i need to know is if anyone here has a setup like this and any problems they have with this type of setup! Any help wopuld be much appreciated.
