Solved: Netgear WPN824 Router

Q: Solved: Netgear WPN824 Router

I recently replaced my old router with the Netgear WPN824 RangeMax router. I have 4 systems on it (3 PC, 1 Mac). All have an internet connection. When all 4 systems are running Windows operating systems (3x Vista, 1x XP; my wife has Vista on her Mac for some PC MMO gaming), there's no issue. However, when she boots back to her Mac OS, download rates drop to 14-30Kbps.

I've spoken to the people at Netgear, who said they had absolutely no idea what was going on.

edit: I forgot to add I have 2 desktops (1 mac, 1 pc running vista) direct wired to the router and 2 laptops (both pc's, 1 xp, 1 vista) connected via wireless.

I recently moved into a house that already had a netgear wireless router already installed and working. the first time i got onto the connection it worked fine and i could take my laptop up to my room and the internet worked fine. Now i can sometimes connect to the wireless connection when i am close to the router and never when i am up in my room. my Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN says the connection is excellent or very good, but wont connect to the wireless. i have called HP and my compusa store where i bought my computer but they cant help and they suggest i send in the computer to be checked out by their technicians. can anyone help? i can usually fix my own computer problems but i cant seem to figure this out and am now using a ethernet cord plugged into the router to connect to the internet. thanks.

Hi, brand new here, but I have a very frustrating problem with this newly aquired router i have. Basically I install the router/try to set up its wireless network and at the point where the wizard takes you online to http://routerlogin.net to start network configuration and ur confronted with an intervening pop up asking you to input a username and password the default authentication given, username- admin, password- password, just wont be accepted. I have to admit that this is the first time I've attempted to install a wireless router etc so although I've tried to work my way round the problem/understand things i've finally decided to seek someones elses aid on it. My computers a fuj siemens, windows xp op system. Oh another possibly important piece of info is that in the past, this being a family pc, my brother has attempted to set up a wireless network with blueyonder and although weve only just aquired a wireless adaptor with this new netgear purchase he does appear to have set up a network- the adaptor detects this as apossible connection- and so I wasnt sure if the presence of this could be in any way interferring with my efforts to setup up a new, independent network? Many thanks in adcvance, steve

my wireless router randomly shuts off while im browsing the internet. it only affects the wireless connections, not the hardwired. the only way to fix this is to shut the router off and restart it, i've already tried updating the firmware and resetting factory settings and neither worked. any help would be greatly appreciated

I just completed hooking up a Netgear WPN824 to my Dell OptiPlex GX260, using Windows XP. Thanks to "Terry" whose message I read here earlier. I was able to get it running without the CD that comes with it (Terry said "I never have used a router installation CD and I never will). As it turned out, I just hooked it up and powered up everything the way Terry said and I got a "Smart Wizard" that told me what to do. My guess is that it must have been part of the firmware for the product. Now I have internet access with the main computer it is hooked up to (using a CAT5 cable).

My problem is, I have two laptops in the house and I cannot connect to them via the router router. I have a theory. When I went through the Smart Wizard set up guide, I got to the Security portion of it and it asked me if I wanted to use a WEP type security setup or something called a WPA. It suggested using the WPA so I set it up that way and put in a simple password. I guess that was a mistake because when I went to try to link to the internet using the router, the laptops I had would not recognize the security protocol. I then consulted the manual I downloaded from portion and it said "Some older systems may not recognize WPA security protocols." Guess that is what I get for not reading the manual first. So here is my big question?

"How can I get back in the router to change the security settings to WEP." Now if you guys think my theory is all wrong, let me ... Read more

I had a Netgear WPN824v3 router that worked great until it started dropping it's signal from time to time. I mean you'l be online wireless then all of the sudden nothing. Computer doesn't even see the router. Hardwire items are fine, it's only the wifi. Started just once in a while then increased in frequency. Simply powering down the router seems to reset it fine. Not hard just a pain to do seemingly all the time. I figured that it was going bad so I bought a new router. I like this one so I got another Netgear WPN824. This was about a year ago and did seem to "fix" the problem. Until......recently the new one is doing the exact same thing. What are the chances that I got another bad router. I guess it could happen but how likely is it, not very I'm thinking. I did get a good year out of each router, so I suppose it could just be the "life span" of this model. But I have seen routers run strong for several years so I'm not thinking this is likely either. Not sure which way to look. If it is that this model has a short life, so be it. I just won't get this model again. Simple enough right. But it just seems strange that two have the exact same issue, at about the same life span time. Could it be that I have something setup incorrectly in the router setting that cause overload of circuits??????? If any one has had this issue with this model router, I would appreciate any input.

I bought this on eBay last year and never got it running. It was new but had no serial number, as it was part of some OEM situation (can't remember the details). I tried to get support from Netgear, but they refused because of the lack of a serial number. The Seller on eBay said that rather than following the instructions I got from eBay via email support (which they do provide even us serial-less peopl), which I never got to work for some reason) that I should create a network bridge first.

Are there step-by-step instructions for accomplishing this somewhere?

I have a Fujitsu laptop, and have had my wireless router for approximately 2 years. I have my internet through AT &T. Up until last week, the wireless router was fine. the blue light on the side of it doesn't stay on, and the wireless indicator light does not come on. I can get the internet if I plug the internet directly into my computer. I have tried plugging the wireless power supply into a different outlet, but that does not work. I am out of warranty with Netgear, and would like to avoid buying a new wireless router if I can.

I'd start by downloading and installing the latest router firmware, then resetting the router to factory defaults and reconfiguring it. Sometimes that will get it's mind right.

Hi,

I bought a NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 but I don't get internet connect from it. I have a comast modem it's a RCA by THOMSON witch I can connect to the internet with a ethernet cable.

A:NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 No Internet Connection.

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

Hello all,

I have a Netgear WPN824 router attached to my cable broadband modem. My PC is connected via ethernet cable and I also have a PS3 connected wirelessly.

The problem is when im on the internet, I can try to view another page (any page) and the PC says
'No connection to the internet is currently available. To view Internet content that has been saved on your computer, click WORK OFFLINE. Click try again to attempt to connect'

I click 'try again' or 'reconnect' which ever it is and it fires right back with no problems?
Now it doesnt do this all the time, maybe 5 or 6 times a night and at no perticular point, its just random.

My PS3 keeps the wireless signal perfectly at 100% and is uPNP enabled in the router settings. There are no problems with with this connection (only the PSNetwork problems). It just seems to be the PC which is having issues!

Has anyone got any idea why this would be happening?

Regards
Nick

EDIT: In the time it took to write this post, when I clicked on SUBMIT, the WORK OFFLINE box mentioned above appeared. TRY AGAIN and its fine!!!??

Hello folks...

Recently purchased a netgear wpn824 v3 wireless router. I did a bit of research to see what would be the most secure method of setup on and opted for a WPA-PSK, Access Control List.

Now we have 2 brand new laptops. My macbook (white, 160gb version), a acer running windows vista. There is also a advent laptop running xp which is 2 years old. I managed to add the 3 labtops individual ip address's to the access list and set up the password.

Now, only my macbook is running wirelessly and the other 2 keep failing to connect, either at the password stage or more often than not before then. I have been using computers for some years for personal and work use but this is a bit of a step up for me and could really do with some help. Tried the search function here but didn't really come across anything i could see that was similar. Any extra info required i am more then happy to give.

Thanks!

I have a netgear WPN824 router set up.

I have an NTL 250 BB modem with an ethernet cable going to the router. I then have an ethernet cable running from the router to my PC. My Pc is connected to the internet and all is well.

I'm running XP sp2, my daughters laptop has the same.

My daughter has an HP DV8387ea laptop with built in wireless connection. I have tried and tried to configure it to connect to the internet but it's not even picking the router up, it's showing no wireless connections available.

I have checked the adapter in hardware and it's showing as working properly, it is a Broadcom 802.11a b/g. No matter what I try I cannot get the wireless connection to connect. I have run the wireless connection wizard on my PC and put the flash drive in the laptop. I have run the wireless wizard on the laptop, I have manually configured the settings in network connections on the laptop and I am still sat looking at the Wireless connection Icon with a red cross.

I have searched on the Netgear site to find an answer, nothing. I have searched google to try and find a solution, but I think I'm looking too hard or using the wrong search term because the results I find no matter what I've tried, still nothing.

It's my daughters laptop which needs configuring I think. As far as I know my Pc is as it should be.

I am a novice to wireless networking and so if anyone can help provide step by step configuration advice I'll be eternally grat... Read more

I want to connect my Linksys router to my Netgear router and use it as a repeater to increase the signal strength in the rooms near the other end of my house. I need it to be seamless so I disabled DHCP and changed the SSID to the exact same name. I tried connecting and found ONE network with my chosen name. I connected to it however it only resulted in "Limited Access" and no internet access.

Can someone help me figure out how I can make this work please?

Hi,

I've been experiencing some problems with my RangeMax wireless NETGEAR router (model WPN824) in terms of wireless connectivity.

When directly plugged into my router (i.e. using ethernet cables), the download and upload speed (in mbps - megabytes per second) appear to be working correctly, where we register average download speeds of 15-19 mbps, and 1.99 to 2.07 mbps for upload speeds, as shown on speedtest.net. However, our wireless devices (i.e. laptops and Nintendo Wii) are not picking up the same download speeds, but the upload speed is fine. The problem is that the download speeds of the wireless devices are comparatively low, where speeds of 2.5 to 5.5 mbps are a commonality.

We've tried resetting the router (pushing that small button at the back of the router, using a pin) and have a new 10-character key password. We've also tried simply unlugging the power cable to the router, with disconnecting lengths of about 10 seconds to over a minute for separate attempts. It is also worth noting that the router occasionally disconnects and re-connects on irregular intervals, and we have many wireless devices attached to the router (though many of these are not in use and are very often disconnected from the internet, so I do not think the router is being overwhelmed).

I am currently paying for 30 mbps downloading speed and 2 mbps with respect to uploading, though the 30 mbps downloading speed will likely only be registered if directly connected to the bl... Read more

so i'm not sure how this will work without a modem , so we need a little more info on how connected

I don't have the CD anymore or anything. Im lost and not sure what to do. Would anyone be interested in doing this with me? thanks - Karen

Well as you can see from the title I have a Netgear wpn824 wireless router. Here's the problem, it was running perfectly fine this afternoon with no issues. So I decide to change the access points name and I did that through routerlogin.net and so on and so forth. Well after a minute of saving the changes....my laptop doesn't see it anymore as an access point and I don't know how to reset it. I've tried pressing that little reset button in the back of the router but nothing so far. I've also tried unplugging it and yet still nothing. Can someone please help me with this? Thanks!
Oh and also, I lost the cd that came with it and got the pdf from the netgear site but don't know what to do. And I've seen on this forum that a cd isn't needed for a router but not sure how to do it.

Basic background - using above router to connect both Wireless devices as well as 1 desktop directly connnected into the router. ISP is Time Warner cable modem. For 6 months only issues we ever had were related to TW issues. No changes made to the internal network.

About a month ago I started experiencing some slowdowns on my desktop but figured this was more of TW " enhancing" the network without giivng owarning. However, the problems persisted and I would usually re-boot the cable modem followed by the router and for a while the speed would hold. It did not seem to affect the wireless computers connected though they are used less often.

I've connected 3 different desktop PC's in the past month and had the sam eissues. I've rpelaced every ethernet cable to make sure it wasn't a simple cable issue and have also used all 4 ports in the router. I upgraded to the latest router firmware yesterday. It seems to work for a while but after going to bed and getting up next morning no internet connection and then the reboots to fix.

My power saver settings on my desktop PC are turned off. I am using an older version of ZOnealarm due to some issues I had with their newer versions not allowing me to shutdown WInXP ( version 6.51 I think ). I have the settings to lock internet activity completley disabled in Zonealarm to ensure it does not lock out the internet which in the past would cause reconnnect issues.

Hi,

Usually i solve my own PC probs but this time i'm stumped and the girlfriend is doing my head in so i turn to you in dire need.

I have the Netgear WPN824 v2 Wireless Router connected to my Desktop PC via a ethernet cable and also connected to another Desktop PC via a wireless card. This setup has been running fine for a couple of months(since the refurbished router was bought) but when i woke up yesterday morning i could not access the internet.

Nothing had been touched by anyone since we turned off our PC's the night before,The PC's can still communicate with each other on the network ok but neither of us can access the internet through the router. According to the router it is still receiving from the internet, all the lights on the front are as normal and the routerlogin setup still says exactly the same as it did before.

Luckily i can plug my ethernet cable straight into the modem to access the internet but my girlfriend is not impressed and is busting my nuts till i get it sorted.

I've already scanned the forums and followed the Netgear website instructions i.e. do the hard reset, but it didn't solve it.

Can anyone please help me?

Thanks in advance,
Marc.

Hi

I connect to the internet using the above router.
I have numerous comps connected wired and wireless
All are given static ip addresses
These are entered into the router as reserved ip addresses
Wireless access is turned on
I have a computer wired, this computer can still connect to the internet even though its ip address is static and out of the ip range set up on the router.
It cannot browse, but online games, their instant messaging & windows messenger still work.
Why is this? & how can I stop this?

This computer is given full access from time to time by extending the ip range set in my router, so I still need a quick & easy way to connect/disconnect the internet to this pc

Unplugging the cable is not an option.
Thanks for any replies

I just bought a Netgear WPN824 v2 router from Tiger Direct, and it didn't come with an installation CD. So I tried to download the firmware from www.neatgear.com like the flyer in the box told me to. I could download it all right, but my computer (running Windows XP) won't open it. It's got a strange extension, .chk. I downloaded the sheet of instructions, but that told me to insert the CD. I know it's possible to configure it manually, but I don't know anything about routers, and it didn't come with an instruction manual.

What do I need to do to get this thing going? Thanks!

A:Netgear Rangemax WPN824 v2--no installation CD

Download the User Manual from Netgear's web site (support section).

Do you have cable or DSL? Who is the ISP?

Why are you trying to upgrade the firmware already? When you read the User Manual I expect that you will find that you need to login to the router and select the 'upgrade firmware' task.

Hi,

I've been trying to set my new laptop up so that I can use it wirelessly for the Internet. I've been trying to do this for a month! :

I have:

Packard Bell Easynote SW51-B-012I running Vista Home Premium
Netgear WPN824 Wireless Router
Virgin Media Broadband

I've got the router set up correctly as Netgear talked me through it as I was having problems. The last thing the guy said to me was 'Congratulations..you've done it!' This was after he asked me to type Google in the browser and it appeared. Now this was on my PC, which was where we had set the router up. When I tried to get on the Internet with my laptop, I couldn't! (It is wireless enabled and I did turn it on. lol) It tells me that I am connected but I can't connect to the Internet. I don't understand why. It says 'limited access'.

If I connect my laptop straight to the modem it works..it just won't when the router is connected, even though it tells me I'm connected.

Does anyone know what I could be doing wrong please?

Thanks.

Pebbles

A:Setting up Laptop for Wireless (Netgear WPN824)

When it says limited access, it usually means your not connected properly.
Check the wireless settings on the router including your security.

Second thing to maybe try is uninstalling your wireless network adapter on the laptop and re-installing it to try and pick up the connection from scratch.

Third option, check all the wireless settings on the router and use these settings (ip address, default gateway etc) to input into tcp/ip settings on the connection itself on the laptop.

I have a Netgear WPN824 Router in our house with several computers connected to it. On the WAN-side is Swedish ISP ComHem and a 50 megabit Internet service.

The problem is that quite often (several times a week) my laptop that I bring to work (with other WLAN network) can not reconnect when I get back home. Yesterday I had several friends visiting and their laptops could not connect either. All laptops always can see the SSID, but very often they doesnt get an IP-adress. Meanwhile already connected computers, both via WLAN and Ethernet cable, are using the router to get Internet access.

One friend borrowed an ethernet cable and managed to connect without problem.

It normaly works again if I restart the router though. But if I reboot the PC, it still can not connect.

I have tried ipconfig release and renew. I have tried flushdns. No difference.

My work-laptop has Windows 7, is an IBM Thinkpad T43P with all updates and drivers working just fine - I work for an IT-consulting firm with good knowledge and routines, so it always works fine in all other environments.

I have tried DHCP and fixed IP-addresses for the different MAC-addresses, including my work-pc. Same problem still there.

Any ideas?

Regards,

Per Hjertén, Stockholm, Sweden

Make sure you have the latest firmware for the router; then reset the router to factory default settings and reconfigure it.

If that doesn't motivate it to behave, replace it.

Bought a refurbished WPN824. Hooked it up and no trying to set it up on my computer. I have a WPN111 USB 2.0 and had that software search for it and it didn't see it, no prob.
Went to IP address - http://192.168.1.1 and as it says on many forums I entered ADMIN for login user name and PASSWORD for password, didn't like that. Tried ADMIN and 1234 for the password, nope.
Here's the weird thing, when I go to that address the authentication box for the user name and password says "Enter user name and password for "WRT54G" at http://192.168.1.1"
Now that's a linksys router...WTH???
Did I get a netgear box with old linksys inside? is that even possible?
Anyway I also went to http://www.routerlogin.net/basicsetting.htm and that page can't be found.
I also went to routerlogin.net and that's just the Netgear FAQ page for issues.
Any help here on getting this going would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, I did reset the router to restore setting and restarted everything.

My router is a Netgear RangeMax WPN824 v3; Firmware version V1.0.7_1.0.8NA (which is the latest at the time of this writing). The router is connected by ethernet to my iMac, and I use the wireless for my Macbook Pro, my iPod touch, occasionally a Wii, and guests' laptops when they visit the house.

Most of the time it works flawlessly. But on occasion (usually at intervals of 3-4 weeks or so), it seems to spontaneously stop broadcasting its SSID. This isn't a matter of changed or incorrect settings on the router or on the wireless devices. Literally what will happen is: One or more of us will be working wirelessly just fine, and then suddenly all of us will lose the wireless signal simultaneously, on all devices, and the router's SSID stops showing up in the list of available networks.

When this happens, we haven't lost Internet, because the iMac (with the direct ethernet connection the the router) continues to connect to the Internet fine.

I have a unique name for the SSID, so I don't think the name is conflicting with any of my neighbors' routers.

On these occasions, when I then log into the Router Manger and select "Advanced Wireless Settings," I find that the "Enable SSID Broadcast" checkbox is still checked (liars!). And if I then simply click "Apply," things return back to normal, and SSID starts broadcasting again. For another 3-4 weeks until the problem recurs. :-(

I can also successfully restart the SSID... Read more

So I have AT&T DSL. I bought a Netgear N300 ADSL2+ Modem/WiFi Router that is compatible with my service.

Previously with this Modem/Router it would constantly drop the wireless connection for the Wii I have that was used to stream Netflix.

So recently I bought a Linksys E2500 Router so I could be able to use the Wii, along with 3 other desktops, 1 laptop, and 3 phones.

My ideal setup would be this:
Set the ADSL2+ Modem/Router to be just a modem (I know how to set the option for this)Connect the Linksys Router to be what all the devices connect to wirelessly (this would serve as the DHCP server)
I have read that one of the Routers has to be set to "BRIDGED" mode, yet I don't know which device has to be Bridged

Hi,below is a problem I am having with a refurbished router I bought recently.
I have a netopia cayman 3300 dsl modem connected to a netgearwpn 824 wireless router.
I was unable to connect to the internet with a wired connection firstly. below is the ipconfig for a netopia modem

ip address 192.168.1.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.254

and the ip config when the router is connected to the modem

ip address 192.168.1.2
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.1

I was unable to connect to the internet when the ethernet connection from the netopia dsl modem was connected to the wan (internet) port of the netgear router.I eventually got wired internet connection by moving the connection from the modem to one of the ethernet ports of the router (instead of the wan port).I was now able to connect to the internet as the ip config for the router was now the same as the config for modem (router is now acting as a switch).however I cannot get wireless access to the internet, the wireless pci card seems to be copying the address of the homepage on my laptop everytime I try and connect to the internet by wireless.

any suggestions ???????????????

Tech support says model WPN824 can't supply stats like line SNR (margin), attenuation, CRCs, etc. Can this be true? I wasn't aware of any newer routers that can't give such info.

Maybe prob is that info usu comes from the modem?
I'm using 2Wire 2701HG-B in bridge mode w/ the Netgear behind it.
Had to get a separate router because never could get PAP2-T voip ATA to work correctly w/ the 2Wire router (after 2 wks talking to every tech I could find - even Lev II).

If those type stats only come from a modem (not router), I'd have to put 2Wire back in full mode (& reset ALLLLL PW's again). With 2Wire in bridge mode, its mgmt console can't be accessed (so it says).

What is typical (acceptable or expected) overhead loss diff of what (AT&T tech) measured at my DSL wall jack vs after you've gone through a modem and / or router? I've got AT&T dry loop DSL, 1500 Kbps. At the wall jack, the tech measured 1536 Kbps d/l & SNR=39dB.

Best I usu get is 1250 d/l, even for very close test servers. Is the loss really that much thru modem & router, or just from the round trip even to nearby servers?
He couldn't access my router to test spd thru it (now realize probably just needed to turn off router FW).

Netgear said my network adapter should be able to provide such info. I highly doubt that.

But my issue is the other (Win98) wireless workstation, it can see my SSID on the network and my connection is reading at 65% but it doesnt seem to see the router i have the worstation configured for dhcp from the router but for some reason they dont see eachother I dont understand why? if i run ipcofig on the win98 pc i get a apipa address instead of a dhcp ip address that my router should be pushing out just like it does for my pc??? Hi All,

I recently put in a Netgear firewall, configured it, its running no problem. Then I setup a new Netgear N600 wireless router, configured it, gave it a static IP, connected to it, works like a charm. Thing is, when I try to access the web gui I receive nothing.. Is the Netgear firewall taking priority or something? I went directly connected to the netgear wifi router and double checked to make sure that there was no settings restricting administration from wifi users, etc.. Anyone have a similar setup ?

Thanks All

You sure been busy! Have "seen" you all over this place.

Is the FVS318G router connected to the N600 router's WAN port or a LAN port?

If WAN have you changed one of the routers so that they don't both use the same LAN subnet (I didn't check each one, but they probably both default to the same).

If LAN have you disabled the N600's Dhcp server?

But I cannot get my NEW Netgear N600 router to communicate with a NEW Netgear WN 3000 RP extender.

The instructions say to press the WPS button on the extender then the WPS button on the router. No WPS button exists on the router!

The instructions also I can use any wireless network manager utility to set this up. Can't find where this is in Windows 7.

The I pad has found the NETGEAR_EXT address but won't connect. And the light on the extender does no indicate teh router is communicating with it.

This is a problem that I have been having and been trying to get resolved for a month or so.

The system that I have is a home computer, windows xp sp#3 home version IP static, 192.168.230.2 with a subnet automatically set to 255.255.255.0. The second computer that I use is a laptop, windows 2000 pro, sp#4, static ip is also 192.168.230.30 with a subnet set as well as the first computer. I do not have a problem using the crossover cable and transfereing files that way, but now I have a router in the line and wanted to send the information wireless to the computer A through the router. The router has been changed from it’s original ip of 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.230.70 with the same subnet as the 2 computers.

I can use the command from the computer A and ping the computer A and the router to rule out telecommunication error from one side. When I ping the laptop, nothing. I get timed out. When I do the same on the laptop, I can ping just only the laptop. Then I tried to ping the router, I get timed out as well. Is there anything that I am missing?

I have also shared both drives on both computers as well and the permissions have been set.

The router is a netgear wrg614 that is using dhcp server address within the ip range. Also there is no DSL internet on this rounter, I am trying to use it as a file sharing device between 2 computers.

Go to the manufacture of your router website and look for "Support" or documents to show you how to do this.

Let's hope you can understand me with this inquiry, and I can understand what I need to do...
I have a Netgear Wireless-N 150 Router WNR1000v2 that my daughter hooked up for me a few months back. Then the ISP provider was "switched" and I'm told that my brother was at my home re-installing the same router. I was out of the country and now that I'm home, we've "switched" ISP's again, and apparently the router needs to be re-installed again...?
I'm not understanding "why" it needs to be re-installed each time... I would've guessed that "once" would be enough (thus being the initial installation) followed by maybe "reconfigured" or something [at most] whenever we switch services... Wouldn't that make sense?
However, if re-installation is necessary, so be it, but that isn't my problem... the original CD seems to be missing (along with a bunch of other CD's) which I'm almost sure my brother "took" because he took alot of things that he won't return... Anyway, is there a way I can "accomplish" setting up this router "without" the original CD?

A:Solved: Help setting up a Netgear router pls

The only value of the CD is the user manual, which you already have online, so no loss there.

Chapter 1 of the manual is probably sufficient for your task. If you can connect your computers to the router by ethernet and by wireless then the only thing you probably have to do is (re)configure the WAN settings--how it connects to your modem.

If you post your modem brand and model we can probably help with the WAN configuration if you don't have the information from your ISP. If you are posting via a connection to your modem you could post the following to give us some more hints ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

I'm new here and need help. I've spent probably six hours with various tech support people over the last 24 hours and am frustrated.

Bought and installed a new Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Router WNDR 3400. Modem is actually an ActionTec Gateway GT701 which I have made a bridge to the router (also recently updated firmware too). I can get online wirelessly with several computers and the ethernet connection on the XP works fine too. The MAIN problem is that my wireless signal isn't any stronger than before on the old ActionTec.

One of the reasons we got this is because the wireless signal didn't reach to the master bedroom (using iPad or iTouch). Now it will sometimes show one bar, but is quick to drop it.

I'm so frustrated and don't know what else to try. The router is placed up high in the office and does have to go through a block wall. But I read lots of reviews where the Netgear boasts strong and far reaching signals.

Anything else I can do? Thanks for your help.

When currently using this router it says it will take me 13 hours to download a 46MB file, watching it transfer at a rate of approx. 1.54 KB/sec. Worked with RR tech support and they say the modem is transferring at correct speed so problem must be with wireless router which I have had for approx. 5-6 years. I have a Paradyne DSL modem connected to a Netgear WGR614 wireless router. This set-up has been working great for over a year.

A couple of weeks ago, my DSL (or so I thought) quit working while I was using it. No big deal, I just let it be, thinking it would be up the next day. Next day, same thing, so I started the normal troubleshooting. Everything looked like it should, so I connected directly to the DSL modem and everything worked fine. I decided my Netgear had bit the dust, even though everything looked good. I tried another router and had the same results, so I purchased a new Netgear because I wasn't sure of the configurations for the second router. Same thing.

In order to connect the modem directly to the computer, I have to enter the IP, Gateway and DNS numbers in my PC, so I know my numbers are still valid. Any ideas as to why my DSL will no longer work through a router? I can access the routers internal configuration from my pc, so I know the connection between those two are good. When I set the Netgear back to factory defaults, it was able to detect what type of connection I have, so I assume the connection between the modem and the Netgear is good. I tried disabling my firewall temporarily. I am at a loss as to what to try next. I know several people who have the exact set-up at their homes and are working fine.

The troubleshooting was performed on my wired Windows XP Home desktop; however, I also tried wireless with my Windows XP Professional laptop.

I've been trying for days to log into my router to try to enable encryption, http://192.168.0.1

Each time I get ''log in failed'' System Authentication Failed. Please contact your system administrator for the correct information

I've tried everything suggested on the page below, nothing works.

http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101210.asp

My Internet connection through the Router is fine, no problems, 48.0Mpbs at the moment.

I had previously phoned the support line twice because the encryption code they gave me didn't work, all it did was stop me from connecting to the internet, no joy there , they just talked me through exactly what's on the troubleshooting page above, suggested it was a problem with the wireless card.

I'ts since then I can't connect to the Router.

I've spoken to IBM support, ( lovely people logged the call and phoned me back, cheapest support call ever )
we've tested everything and they assure me it's a problem with the Router, only now I can't get in to change anything.

I've mailed Netgear Support twice, once Saturday then again Tuesday, no reply yet so I was hopeing someone here may have a few ideas.

Maybe not. I don't know how you or anyone else would have a firmware release before the initial release but this confusing FAQ seems to say something about your issue:

10. Why is the Enable Traffic Meter checkbox grayed-out and unable to setup the traffic meter?

Please note that the firmware version before v1.0.0.34 (initial release) only supports Traffic Meter for WAN types on PPPoE or PPTP mode. Traffic Meter for WAN type with DHCP or Static IP mode will be supported on future FW release. Click to expand...

My advice is to update to the latest firmware, if there is a newer version than what you have, and then reset to factory default settings and reconfigure. If still no good all I can suggest is to call or email Netgear.

I am not exactly computer savvy and when I was setting up my wireless router I used the CD that came with it. I have Windows Vista and a Netgear WGR614 v8 wireless router. When I installed it it wasnt working properly so I used the Vista tutorial and was able to finally access it on line. I thought I had set it up correctly and installed it as a secure network but even though I wrote my passcode down, it keeps telling me access denied. How do I uninstall it so I can start over again? Any help would be appreciated!

I search the knowledge base at netgear.com and was unable to find the answer so here I am. I had my netgear WGR614v4 running for like a year, I upgraded the firmware to the latest release .v5_0_07 and my internet connection went to the dawgs, was lagging like crazy. So I attempt to revert back, but now the stupid connection wizard wouldn't allow me to access the router contril panel, and it doesn't see my broadband connection. I tried the reset button on the rear panel with no change. PLEASE I at my wits end here any help would be appreicated. Thanxs

Did you do the full factory reset, holding the button in for the required time? If that fails, I'd contact Netgear's tech support.

As a small background - i moved into my first apartment with 4 other guys and since I brought the routers I'm the one trying to fix them. The router we initially set our place up with was the same one i used in my dorm last year. All year long it was iffy with Windows computers, kicking people off randomly, not letting them connect (myself included) yet my friends mac computers literally never had an issue once. After moving into this apartment I have not been able to connect to this router at all and have been using my upstairs neighbors' the entire semester. We thought it could possibly be because we have 5 laptops, 3 Xbox's and 5 smart phones attempting to access it (rarely all at once its usually probably 5 items total when were all home). So i made a trip home and grabbed a spare router my dad had laying around so we could run two routers. That's where i ran into some problems, well more problems i guess.

The original router : Netgear WNR1000
Second Router: Netgear WNDR3300
Modem: Arris TM822
ISP: Optimum
Laptop: HP dv6t Windows 7

So i tried plugging the second router in through one of the LAN ports on the original router to set up another network but it did not work. I searched all over the internet followed various instructions but none of them resulted in the second router giving me a connection to the internet. I tried to setup an internet connection with the second router alone but it would never connect to the internet even after i reset it t... Read more

So I went to my routers setup page and downloaded a new version. After I download it and it shows up in 'Downloads' how do I use it to update the router? When I click open it asked me what program I want to use to open it. Any advice?

A:Solved: help updating netgear router after download?

You need to log on to the router, and load it through the web interface.

I've got a netgear router, the IP address for the router should be 192.168.0.1

Type that into a web browser's address bar.

So i goes and buys a netgear rp114 router which was recommended to my by a mate.

I have a 1mb cable modem connection and both pc's are running windows xp pro, and have more or less the same hardware specs. ( xp2100)

Well i sent the son up into the loft to wire up the cat 5 cable, connected the router to the cable modem (wan) then connected the 2 pc's to slots 1 and 2 at the back of the modem.

Switched everything on all lights are on everything seems ok.
So i tried to connect to the internet with my pc, but no connection

So my question can anyone give me a link to a site with a step by step guide to setting up both pc,s so as to share internet connection.

Hello,
I have a Netgear DGB834Gv3 router and a Netgear WG111v2 adapter. When first setup I was wireless for about a week. Then I tried to update my security settings and went for a WPS2 PSK setting with password. Since then I have not been able to get the two to communicate. The router seems to be sending signals as it appears in the Available Networks window, and the adapter seems to be flashing blue lights occasionally, but the adapter won't pick up the signals.
Any ideas, please?

I cannot get wifi on my iPhone, my netbook my iPad, or my laptop. All devices tell me i'm connected to the router, but I am not able to update any pages or connect to the internet. it's very frustrating, as Netgear will only help you if you spend $40/month on tech support and I've done all the firmware updates and have tried everything I can think of. Has anyone else had this problem? All of the lights on the router tell me everything seems to be working fine. And my phone tells me that I have a strong wireless connection, but nothing works. Very frustrated!!!

Thanks in advance for any help offered. PLEASE HELP!!

Here is the enviroment that I have: One desktop with wol capabilities attached via cable to netgear router. 2 laptops with wifi capabilities. At first I was using the netgear router as a point to point file sharing device that I can use as a INTRANET. Since the desktop has wol via cable, I can access the desktop anytime with my laptop using static IP. Now the wife went and got 2wire modem with wifi capability and is using it on her laptop. I am wondering if I can change the settings within the 2 wire to setup static ip for INTRANET use and be able to get INTERNET access as well. The other problem is that I am still wanting to use the netgear router for the desktop as a wol so that I can access that computer as well for files. Is this non-impossible? I have all of the keys and total information for both routers.

Hi, I am an absolute computer beginner (I use my computer for word processing, email, and internet), so please bear with me; I read a lot of other posts to determine what I would need to say here, sorry if i leave anything out.

We have a gateway desktop with windows xp, which is connected to a cable modem, and the modem to a wireless router, netgear wgr614v6. an ibm laptop running xp connects to the wireless network and has never had any problems. we got a new laptop, gateway, with vista on it and it will not connect to any wireless network. i ahve already called gateway tech support, reinstalled the drivers, gone through all their suggestions, and they say the problem is with my router. the laptop finds my wireless network but says it cannot connect, no matter how close it is to the router. the network is not password protected, encrypted, and i even tried turning off all firewalls. i have logged in to the router and tried changing the channels and other settings to see if that would work and nothing does. i have power cycled the router and modem every time i made a change to see if that would help and it does not. the laptop consistenly sees the network but says it can't connect.

netgear has a site with info on upgrading your router for vista but next to my model router is a link for a complete reinstall of the router; we dont have vista on this desktop and there is no one file specified to upgrade the router for vista in the download.

Hello everyone,

I just bought my parents a Netgear WGR614v10 wireless router for Christmas. I'm trying to set up a wireless network and make a wired connection from the router to their Dell Dimension 2400 desktop running Windows XP SP3. Internet access is provided by NetZero using a 2Wire DSL modem. Without the router connected, the wired Internet connection with the Dell desktop works fine.

I went through the procedure correctly to set up the wireless router but there is no Internet access. So I plugged the router directly to the desktop NIC and tried a "ping" command to 192.168.1.1. I received four "Destination host unreachable" responses.

An "ipconfig /all" shows (with direct Ethernet connection between NIC and router port 1):

That IP means windows has assihgned the IP as it could not find the DHCP service from the router - lets see the services - see below - see if dhcp and other service are running
maybe a firewall blocking - has the machine ever had norton installed - if so use norton removal tool to remove - this often blocks access , and gives various strange results ie email and updates work but browsing wont - so would not surprise me that a modem works but router wont , as you get different IP range from modem

As of last friday, I had a xbox 360 that worked fine with this router. But, my Xbox crashed, so I bought a used one. When I plug it in to my router with an ethernet cable, the light shows on the port for a little while then resets. This creates a disruption, and the xbox wont connect. It fails the very first network test. I tried different cables, that didnt work. However, if i plug the same ethernet cord into my laptop from the same port on the router, the laptop still gets internet and the connection does not drop.
Also, I plugged the xbox directly into the modem and THIS worked. So, its not a faulty ethernet port on the xbox. I tried port forwarding the ports that are recommended to open on the router and i tried resetting the router and modem multiple times.
Nothing changed on the router between xboxes, and I know I have at least covered all the basics. A friend told me I may be able to try turning off Mac Address Filtering, but I dont know how to do this on my NetGear wgr614 v5 router.
Anybody have any ideas whats going on? The weirdest part is how it will connect, and the light is lit up on the port the xbox is plugged into, but then when i run a test the lighht goes out and the test fails. Its like the router is kicking the xbox off or keeps resetting that connection.

Thanks in advance for any help!

I have just recently had installed a sky satellite along with the sky+hd service. The sky+hd box is connected to a phone extension line via a filter. All other extensions have filters installed. I have a digital phone connected to the same extension as sky via a second filter. Both filters go into a splitter. Since this has been done I can no longer connect to AOL. I can sometimes connect to the internet via IE but cannot load any web pages apart from those with very few graphics - and loading is excruciatingly slow. If I disconnect the sky+hd box everything is fine. If I leave the sky+hd box connected, switched on but don't switch the Panasonic TV on everything is still fine. The TV is connected to the sky+hd box via an HDMI cable. I am on a BT line, more than 5 miles from the exchange, and according to BT my max available speed is 256k!! I have run broadband speed checker and it gives me download speeds of 464k and upload of 213k. My router is a netgear dg834g and I am running windows vista (SP1 I think).
Any ideas out there? Could it be a bandwidth problem?
thx

A:[SOLVED] aol broadband won't connect, netgear dg834 router, sky+ hd

I don't seem to have 'edit' option yet - maybe because I just joined forum yesterday - so will reply to my own post.
Solution - use TWO filters between extension socket and Sky+HD box. Found this solution on another forum and it works. Apparently using a better quality filter at the main BT socket also works ie. one of those which replaces the faceplate and filters all extensions.

Hi - my first post so please be kind. I have searched for a previous answer, but similar ones all seem more complex problems than mine!

I am running XP on my PC and connecting to the Internet with a Netgear 54 Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Router DG834G v3.

Most of the time it is fine (and it also runs a second PC upstairs through the wireless network OK).

Then about once or twice a day, the Internet light goes from green to orange, flashing on and off for about 10 seconds, then off altogether for a few seconds, then flashing orange again and so on. At this point if I click on the Internet connection symbol in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (task tray?) it tells me I am connected, but with no speed, and I can't access any websites.

If I try the connection diagnostics in XP, it tells me to check the wires, turn the modem off and on again, but when that doesn't work just tells me to contact my ISP.

Each time this has happened I have tried re-booting the PC, and tried turning the power to the router/modem off for a few minutes and back on, no luck, and then eventually, for no apparent reason, the link seems to recover itself and I am back online. (This morning it took about 30 minutes)

We get our Internet through overhead telephone wires (no cable out here in the sticks) and the best speed I ever show on teh connection status screen is 2.5Mbps, but often much less.

I suppose my real question is this: Is the problem likley to bewith my Router/modem? Or is ... Read more

How I fixed my connection problem.

With Netgear DG834GT and TalkTalk, my connection stayed up for Half Hour to an hour before it fell over. Only a router restart would get the internet up again. Also, when the internet went down, the ' i ' light went out. Also had a similar problem with the TalkTalk supplied router.

Was previously with SKY and had the same problem with their supplied DG834GT router.

Complained to TalkTalk constantly, finally sent their engineer, who did not find the problem within the first half hour as the connection is always up, but engineer said he would say the connection dropped while he was there so that a BT Engineer could come out.

BT Engineer came out twice and could not find problem as well. On the second visit, engineer got exchange to test from exchange to the DG834GT and all was OK. Gave TalkTalk an update that the problem still exists. However after the BT engineer finished his testing, noticed the ' i ' light on the router stayed up even when the connection went down.

Tried the TalkTalk wired router again and noticed this time the connection stayed up, but same problem with the DG834GT.

SUMMARY

I borrowed my brothers DG834GT which he is using on UKONLINE at his home and works without problem. Suprisingly, this identical router worked fine on my connection on TalkTalk and UKonline. However, my original router worked fine on his UKONLINE service, but did not work well on my TALKTALK connection. When I was with SKY, I d... Read more

Hi All

I have a Netgear Router at home, and both my Laptop and Tablet connect to it via WiFi. Now on both the Laptop and Tablet, Internet has recently become VERY slow. I contacted my ISP and they said everything on their side is fine, so it has to be on my side...

What can cause this? I've checked for Malware but the fact that both the tablet and Laptop has slow internet points to the router. I also flushed my DNS on my laptop and booted into safemode with networking, internet still ridiculously slow...

Note, both the laptop and tablet travel with me and did connect to other networks sometimes

Thank You

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If you need help with that see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

We have always had the cable modem and Netgear router near each other (with computers nearby as well.) Now we want to set up our computers in another room. We want to leave the modem where it is, and relocate the router near our computers, which are not wireless. Doing it this way means there will be only one cable running room to room. Will this compromise our internet speed? I am assuming the 50 ft line from modem-to-router will not affect the speed.

I have a netgear WGT624 v3 Wireless G router. I run linux, and recently I started noticing that anytime I tried to download a large file (like a deb file which is similar to a setup.exe in some ways) would be corrupted. Running md5sum would confirm that each download attempt would be corrupted differently every time.

I ruled out the laptop by bypassing the router and going strait to the cable modem and with that connection I had zero errors. Otherwise, connecting to the router wirelessly causes problems (and this has been confirmed via a laptop, a PC and an iPhone which has also experienced download problems with installing apps).

The router is currently running the latest available firmware and it's been running this version for at least a year with no issues up until a couple days ago.

I've attempted to reset the router to it's factory defaults and work my way back up to a wireless WPA2 connection from scratch, but it didn't solve anything. Even disabling encryption entirely still produces the same problem. Some downloads just locks up for minutes before resuming and ultimately to no good end as the download is still corrupt.

So, does this sound like a hardware problem? Think it might be possible to fix it somehow? Perhaps blowing dust out of it maybe? Probably worth a shot but I've never heard of anyone doing that before.

Any other suggestions? Would it be worthwhile to attempt to reinstall the firmware? Or even revert to an older version to s... Read more
