NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 No Internet Connection.

Q: NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 No Internet Connection.

I bought a NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 but I don't get internet connect from it. I have a comast modem it's a RCA by THOMSON witch I can connect to the internet with a ethernet cable.

A: NETGEAR RangeMax Wireless Router WPN824 No Internet Connection.

The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.

Note that the wireless encryption and channel selection will have to be done after the basic wired connection is established, the first step is to get wired connections working.

Reset the router to factory defaults by holding the reset button down for 15 seconds with power on.
Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD (COMMAND for W98/WME) to open a command prompt:

NOTE: For the items below in red surrounded with < >, see comments below for the actual information content, they are value substitutions from the previous command output!

In the command prompt window that opens, type type the following commands one at a time, followed by the Enter key:

PING <computer_IP_address>

PING <default_gateway_address>

PING <dns_servers>

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter to copy the contents to the clipboard.
Paste the results in a message here.

<computer_IP_address> - The IP Address of your computer, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<default_gateway_address> - The IP address of the Default Gateway, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

<dns_servers> - The IP address of the first (or only) address for DNS Servers, obtained from the IPCONFIG command above.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

I bought this on eBay last year and never got it running. It was new but had no serial number, as it was part of some OEM situation (can't remember the details). I tried to get support from Netgear, but they refused because of the lack of a serial number. The Seller on eBay said that rather than following the instructions I got from eBay via email support (which they do provide even us serial-less peopl), which I never got to work for some reason) that I should create a network bridge first.

Are there step-by-step instructions for accomplishing this somewhere?

Hmm... No serial number... OEM situation? Doesn't sound like any OEM situation I ever heard of.

I have a Fujitsu laptop, and have had my wireless router for approximately 2 years. I have my internet through AT &T. Up until last week, the wireless router was fine. the blue light on the side of it doesn't stay on, and the wireless indicator light does not come on. I can get the internet if I plug the internet directly into my computer. I have tried plugging the wireless power supply into a different outlet, but that does not work. I am out of warranty with Netgear, and would like to avoid buying a new wireless router if I can.

A:Can't get my Netgear RangeMax wireless router WPN824 v2 to work

I'd start by downloading and installing the latest router firmware, then resetting the router to factory defaults and reconfiguring it. Sometimes that will get it's mind right.

I just completed hooking up a Netgear WPN824 to my Dell OptiPlex GX260, using Windows XP. Thanks to "Terry" whose message I read here earlier. I was able to get it running without the CD that comes with it (Terry said "I never have used a router installation CD and I never will). As it turned out, I just hooked it up and powered up everything the way Terry said and I got a "Smart Wizard" that told me what to do. My guess is that it must have been part of the firmware for the product. Now I have internet access with the main computer it is hooked up to (using a CAT5 cable).

My problem is, I have two laptops in the house and I cannot connect to them via the router router. I have a theory. When I went through the Smart Wizard set up guide, I got to the Security portion of it and it asked me if I wanted to use a WEP type security setup or something called a WPA. It suggested using the WPA so I set it up that way and put in a simple password. I guess that was a mistake because when I went to try to link to the internet using the router, the laptops I had would not recognize the security protocol. I then consulted the manual I downloaded from portion and it said "Some older systems may not recognize WPA security protocols." Guess that is what I get for not reading the manual first. So here is my big question?

"How can I get back in the router to change the security settings to WEP." Now if you guys think my theory is all wrong, let me ... Read more

I just bought a Netgear WPN824 v2 router from Tiger Direct, and it didn't come with an installation CD. So I tried to download the firmware from like the flyer in the box told me to. I could download it all right, but my computer (running Windows XP) won't open it. It's got a strange extension, .chk. I downloaded the sheet of instructions, but that told me to insert the CD. I know it's possible to configure it manually, but I don't know anything about routers, and it didn't come with an instruction manual.

What do I need to do to get this thing going? Thanks!

A:Netgear Rangemax WPN824 v2--no installation CD

Download the User Manual from Netgear's web site (support section).

Do you have cable or DSL? Who is the ISP?

Why are you trying to upgrade the firmware already? When you read the User Manual I expect that you will find that you need to login to the router and select the 'upgrade firmware' task.

I recently bought a second hand in the package netgear maxrange wpn824 router, and it requires a 2.4 ghz 802.11 b/g wireless adapter and windows 98. I have a gateway laptop, operating system windows vista home premium oemact, model: md2614u and it has a ralink 802.11n wireless LAN card. Can I install and operate the wireless router even if I had diferent wireless LAN card?

A:Installing netgear rangemax router

Yes. Reset the router to factory default settings.

Unplug the modem and router and shut down computer(s).

Connect the modem to the router's WAN (Modem, Internet) port and a computer to a router LAN port.

Plug in modem. Plug in router. Boot computer. You should now have internet access and can login to the router and configure the wireless, set a login password, etc.

Don't try to use "turbo" or "rangemax" or any of that proprietary stuff on the router, as that often doesn't work w/o a matching adapter.

I recently replaced my old router with the Netgear WPN824 RangeMax router. I have 4 systems on it (3 PC, 1 Mac). All have an internet connection. When all 4 systems are running Windows operating systems (3x Vista, 1x XP; my wife has Vista on her Mac for some PC MMO gaming), there's no issue. However, when she boots back to her Mac OS, download rates drop to 14-30Kbps.

I've spoken to the people at Netgear, who said they had absolutely no idea what was going on.

edit: I forgot to add I have 2 desktops (1 mac, 1 pc running vista) direct wired to the router and 2 laptops (both pc's, 1 xp, 1 vista) connected via wireless.

Hi, brand new here, but I have a very frustrating problem with this newly aquired router i have. Basically I install the router/try to set up its wireless network and at the point where the wizard takes you online to to start network configuration and ur confronted with an intervening pop up asking you to input a username and password the default authentication given, username- admin, password- password, just wont be accepted. I have to admit that this is the first time I've attempted to install a wireless router etc so although I've tried to work my way round the problem/understand things i've finally decided to seek someones elses aid on it. My computers a fuj siemens, windows xp op system. Oh another possibly important piece of info is that in the past, this being a family pc, my brother has attempted to set up a wireless network with blueyonder and although weve only just aquired a wireless adaptor with this new netgear purchase he does appear to have set up a network- the adaptor detects this as apossible connection- and so I wasnt sure if the presence of this could be in any way interferring with my efforts to setup up a new, independent network? Many thanks in adcvance, steve

Ok, hopefully you can help me with this because I have a Netgear Wireless RangeMax N that widows will detect, load the driver, but not find any networks even though my Dell Inspiron laptop can. I recently tried to set up a computer to computer network with the wireless capabilities of both the desktop computer (win 7) and the laptop (win xp) and win 7 could not set one up. So I decided to take matters into my own hands and uninstall this driver that win 7 recognized as a boardcom driver so that I could potentiality add the driver via the software the pci card came with. Big mistake. So I tried to disable the automatic drivers that win 7 has by accessing the "gpedit.msc" file. Well when I open that it says something like "cannot catch open handle" or something of the nature. And now i am stuck... any advice? How do I reinstall the driver and get windows 7 to connect to a wireless network?

I had a Netgear WPN824v3 router that worked great until it started dropping it's signal from time to time. I mean you'l be online wireless then all of the sudden nothing. Computer doesn't even see the router. Hardwire items are fine, it's only the wifi. Started just once in a while then increased in frequency. Simply powering down the router seems to reset it fine. Not hard just a pain to do seemingly all the time. I figured that it was going bad so I bought a new router. I like this one so I got another Netgear WPN824. This was about a year ago and did seem to "fix" the problem. Until......recently the new one is doing the exact same thing. What are the chances that I got another bad router. I guess it could happen but how likely is it, not very I'm thinking. I did get a good year out of each router, so I suppose it could just be the "life span" of this model. But I have seen routers run strong for several years so I'm not thinking this is likely either. Not sure which way to look. If it is that this model has a short life, so be it. I just won't get this model again. Simple enough right. But it just seems strange that two have the exact same issue, at about the same life span time. Could it be that I have something setup incorrectly in the router setting that cause overload of circuits??????? If any one has had this issue with this model router, I would appreciate any input.

Have you tried using the 54GB option in the settings for that adaptor? The reviews aren't too good but it might work. It's only a 15 dollar adaptor so don't expect too much from it.

Of course there are plenty of USB wireless adaptors that work fine with Windows 7.

Well, it seems that after I've installed the Windows 7 64 bit home premium edition, my wireless adapter (NETGEAR RangeMax WN311B) is not working properly. My internet connection continuously drops and reconnects. It's not my ISP as my wife's computer is working just fine. I've done ping tests on both computers. Her computer is currently receiving an average score of about 57ms while my windows 7 computer is fluxuating between 90ms and disconnecting. My computer is not showing the adapter in the hardware section of the computer. I've downloaded the most up-to-date drivers from NETGEAR and even contacted their support line. Their support line wants to charge 40 dollars for them to tell me how to fix it. I'm hoping that you guys have heard of this issue. I've done some research online and there has been a TON of complaints about this very same issue. When I ran this adapter on my Vista system it was smoking fast and I could pull download speeds greater than 1MB per sec and sometimes even 1.4MB per second with my current ISP. Right now I'm having trouble pulling 56KB/s.

I read a few posts on this website and there seemed to be some discussion on a solution. I've tried to completely re-install the device, with no luck. My feeling to the problem is this. Windows is recognizing the adapter as part of the motherboard as opposed to its own separate device. Does that make sense? Even though it's in the PCI slot, the OS is not seeing it as a separate device.

Basic background - using above router to connect both Wireless devices as well as 1 desktop directly connnected into the router. ISP is Time Warner cable modem. For 6 months only issues we ever had were related to TW issues. No changes made to the internal network.

About a month ago I started experiencing some slowdowns on my desktop but figured this was more of TW " enhancing" the network without giivng owarning. However, the problems persisted and I would usually re-boot the cable modem followed by the router and for a while the speed would hold. It did not seem to affect the wireless computers connected though they are used less often.

I've connected 3 different desktop PC's in the past month and had the sam eissues. I've rpelaced every ethernet cable to make sure it wasn't a simple cable issue and have also used all 4 ports in the router. I upgraded to the latest router firmware yesterday. It seems to work for a while but after going to bed and getting up next morning no internet connection and then the reboots to fix.

I have a Netgear WPN824 Router in our house with several computers connected to it. On the WAN-side is Swedish ISP ComHem and a 50 megabit Internet service.

The problem is that quite often (several times a week) my laptop that I bring to work (with other WLAN network) can not reconnect when I get back home. Yesterday I had several friends visiting and their laptops could not connect either. All laptops always can see the SSID, but very often they doesnt get an IP-adress. Meanwhile already connected computers, both via WLAN and Ethernet cable, are using the router to get Internet access.

One friend borrowed an ethernet cable and managed to connect without problem.

It normaly works again if I restart the router though. But if I reboot the PC, it still can not connect.

I have tried ipconfig release and renew. I have tried flushdns. No difference.

My work-laptop has Windows 7, is an IBM Thinkpad T43P with all updates and drivers working just fine - I work for an IT-consulting firm with good knowledge and routines, so it always works fine in all other environments.

I have tried DHCP and fixed IP-addresses for the different MAC-addresses, including my work-pc. Same problem still there.

Any ideas?

Make sure you have the latest firmware for the router; then reset the router to factory default settings and reconfigure it.

If that doesn't motivate it to behave, replace it.

I've been trying to set my new laptop up so that I can use it wirelessly for the Internet. I've been trying to do this for a month! :

I have:

Packard Bell Easynote SW51-B-012I running Vista Home Premium
Netgear WPN824 Wireless Router
Virgin Media Broadband

I've got the router set up correctly as Netgear talked me through it as I was having problems. The last thing the guy said to me was ''ve done it!' This was after he asked me to type Google in the browser and it appeared. Now this was on my PC, which was where we had set the router up. When I tried to get on the Internet with my laptop, I couldn't! (It is wireless enabled and I did turn it on. lol) It tells me that I am connected but I can't connect to the Internet. I don't understand why. It says 'limited access'.

If I connect my laptop straight to the modem it just won't when the router is connected, even though it tells me I'm connected.

Does anyone know what I could be doing wrong please?

A:Setting up Laptop for Wireless (Netgear WPN824)

When it says limited access, it usually means your not connected properly.
Check the wireless settings on the router including your security.

Second thing to maybe try is uninstalling your wireless network adapter on the laptop and re-installing it to try and pick up the connection from scratch.

Third option, check all the wireless settings on the router and use these settings (ip address, default gateway etc) to input into tcp/ip settings on the connection itself on the laptop.

I have a netgear WPN824 router set up.

I have an NTL 250 BB modem with an ethernet cable going to the router. I then have an ethernet cable running from the router to my PC. My Pc is connected to the internet and all is well.

I'm running XP sp2, my daughters laptop has the same.

My daughter has an HP DV8387ea laptop with built in wireless connection. I have tried and tried to configure it to connect to the internet but it's not even picking the router up, it's showing no wireless connections available.

I have checked the adapter in hardware and it's showing as working properly, it is a Broadcom 802.11a b/g. No matter what I try I cannot get the wireless connection to connect. I have run the wireless connection wizard on my PC and put the flash drive in the laptop. I have run the wireless wizard on the laptop, I have manually configured the settings in network connections on the laptop and I am still sat looking at the Wireless connection Icon with a red cross.

I have searched on the Netgear site to find an answer, nothing. I have searched google to try and find a solution, but I think I'm looking too hard or using the wrong search term because the results I find no matter what I've tried, still nothing.

It's my daughters laptop which needs configuring I think. As far as I know my Pc is as it should be.

I am a novice to wireless networking and so if anyone can help provide step by step configuration advice I'll be eternally grat... Read more

I am using one of these with a new black linksys wireless router, (N class) and although it does see the internet, it is very slow and the signal is weak. My wife's laptop has one of those wireless plug in cards and when she sits right next to me, her signal is GREAT. Is there anything I can do to boost the signal of my desktop pc's wireless pci card to pickup the signal batter? The router is one of the newest Linksys, (all black and rather space age looking,) and I believe it broadcasts a signal for about 4 houses away in this neighborhood I am staying in, but yet my pc always gets a "Low" or "Very Low" signal. Usually i solve my own PC probs but this time i'm stumped and the girlfriend is doing my head in so i turn to you in dire need.

I have the Netgear WPN824 v2 Wireless Router connected to my Desktop PC via a ethernet cable and also connected to another Desktop PC via a wireless card. This setup has been running fine for a couple of months(since the refurbished router was bought) but when i woke up yesterday morning i could not access the internet.

Nothing had been touched by anyone since we turned off our PC's the night before,The PC's can still communicate with each other on the network ok but neither of us can access the internet through the router. According to the router it is still receiving from the internet, all the lights on the front are as normal and the routerlogin setup still says exactly the same as it did before.

Luckily i can plug my ethernet cable straight into the modem to access the internet but my girlfriend is not impressed and is busting my nuts till i get it sorted.

I've already scanned the forums and followed the Netgear website instructions i.e. do the hard reset, but it didn't solve it.

Can anyone please help me?

Thanks in advance,

I connect to the internet using the above router.
I have numerous comps connected wired and wireless
All are given static ip addresses
These are entered into the router as reserved ip addresses
Wireless access is turned on
I have a computer wired, this computer can still connect to the internet even though its ip address is static and out of the ip range set up on the router.
It cannot browse, but online games, their instant messaging & windows messenger still work.
Why is this? & how can I stop this?

This computer is given full access from time to time by extending the ip range set in my router, so I still need a quick & easy way to connect/disconnect the internet to this pc

Unplugging the cable is not an option.

(Sorry, I just edited this because I realized the title said Wireless Router, it's actually a gateway. Can't fix it.)

I have a Netgear CGD24G Wireless Gateway and a Gateway MA8 laptop with after-market Windows 7 (Vista got a virus, went ahead and upgraded.)

Now, when I download 100 MB files on my Xbox 360 (Which is wired to the modem) it will be downloaded in a couple minutes, or less. The other computers in my house (There are plenty, and even more that come and go.) get a blazing internet connection, and most of them are wireless. Now this computer, which had an extremely quick connection as well all of a sudden dropped off, while the rest of the computers remain fast.

I've gone to before and after this occurred and my speed before was around 12 mb/s, and one time around 4 AM was even upward of 25 mb/s, all of these tests were performed multiple times on different server locations.

I JUST did the speedtest, and it came back with .4 mb/s, and the UL speed was 2.0. I honestly can't remember what I averaged with it prior to the problem, but it was definitely higher as well.

This started happening a little less than a week ago, and I've downloaded/changed nothing major with the computer, and have mainly used it for light browsing, and an occasional download.

Also, this is mainly just a hobby fix. I have a long enough cable to wire the computer straight to the gateway, so I really don't want to buy new hardware or anything of t... Read more

Greetings, My Laptop will not connect to my Netgear Router anymore today. It was working earlier (that's what mum said), and then it wouldn't connect anymore. All I get is the 6 bars that is grey with a yellow sun over it and under the Network Connections it say's its "Attempting to authenticate". I don't know what happen however last night the power went out for a couple of seconds so I don't know if that played a part or not but you can't rule out anything yet. Oh and I did a hard reset on the router and modem. I even went as far as to try advice I found on google but nothing worked. I tried deleting/uninstalling the wireless card under device manager and waited for it to restart but that didn't work. I even tried a system restore and that too didn't work. I also did the whole ipconfig /release, /renew, /flushdns and nothing worked. Before some people ask this question I will answer it: I did connect ethernet cable and it did work just fine. So I'm thinking its more of the wireless card that is messing up or something like that because I can connect using the Ethernet port. I am at a lost of what I can do now. Thanks for the help to all those who reply.

A:Wireless connection not connecting to Router (Netgear)

I did another test in which I used a USB Wireless adapter (54Mbps), and It didn't want to connect. So I'm now pretty sure its a Router problem but I don't see how that could be because I did a hard reset and I did backup recovery before I did a reset so I can restore it.

Here is an image from Xiirus Wi-Fi Inspector. Please note I did change the Channel to 8 after I noticed that someone else was also on that channel.

I have a NetGear FWG114P Router with a desktop PC, an IOMEGA backup drive, and printer all pugged directly into the router. I also have a Dell laptop with XP SP2 and a NetGear wireless G card. The router drops the connection to the laptop very frequently. The connection to the desktop and the printer have no issues and the connection going from the laptop to the router is fine. The only way to restore the connection is to re-boot the laptop or the router. I have tried everything to eliminate the problem as it has lasted for several years. Upgrading the firmware on the router, buying a new 5.8Ghz phone, and installing a more powerful antenna to boost the signal, have not made a difference. The signal strength is consistantly strong, so I know that is not the issue. Recently I tried something that did work but I do not understand why. I keep a browser session open to maintain a connection from the laptop to the Router - specifically when I boot up the laptop I login to the router and keep it logged in the entire time I am on the laptop. That way my connection to the router does not drop. I would much rather find the real cause of this problem. Any ideas?

A:NETGEAR Router drops wireless connection

It seems that no one ever responded to your post. However, I can vouch for exactly your experience. I bought my FWG114P after my previous FM114P failed suddenly after about 3 years. I wasn't happy about it failing but it was reliable as long as it ran. But the FWG114P is anything but reliable. I'm on my first replacement now and it drops the wireless signal randomly and for random periods of time just like the first one did (it does seem to come back of its own accord most of the time, without a computer or router reboot). I have given up trying to get Netgear to admit that there is some fundamental problem with the wireless function of this device, basically because I don't want to hear them tell me one more time that it must be interference (obviously interference that just happened to start when I bought the first FWG114P!). Even pointing them to various forums where people are complaining about exactly this problem doesn't seem to make any difference! I haven't bothered getting a third machine because I know it will have the same problem. Yes, it's disappointing and frustrating.

The easiest way is to run the CD that should have come with the Router, if you havent got it then you will have to configure it manually.

Full instructions can be found on the netgear website here.

recently joined Virgin Media with the complete package. The router they gave me is a Netgear VMDG480 Router with wireless connection. However, one of the laptops will not connect to the Internet. It fails to pick up the DNS even though the laptop can see the router and makes a connection. However, on making a connection it does not pick up a DNS.

This is odd because when connected wired it works a treat.

Here is the result from running ipconfig on the wireless adapter:

Connection-specific DNS Suffix: [Blank]
Nothing for DCHP
IPv4 Address:
Subnet Mask:
Default Gateway:
Nothing for DCHP Server
Nothing for DNS Servers

This particular laptop runs Vista, and the other laptop that does work wirelessly uses XP Professional.

Does anyone have the answer to this problem?

Hey Gang,
I have a Netgear WNR1000v3 router. I have two computers connected with a wired connection and a couple of different devices that I connect with using the wireless connection. (Phone, Laptop, Ipad). The wired connections work fine but the wireless connection will only connect to the internet for a very short time (seconds) and then drop off. If I wait long enough I will pick it back up again. But again, for only a very short time. I have tried all the reboot procedures without any success. If I reboot the laptop, Ipad, etc., that seems to get me a connection, again for a very short time. I've checked the lights on the router and everything there says its OK. It seems to have to difference how far I am from the router. I've put the computer right next to it without success. Is the router going bad? It's only about 4 months old. Because I don't use the wireless feature often, I can't tell you if it ever worked or not. It seems to me like I was able to keep a connection when I first hooked it up but I'm not sure.

do you have any other devices near the router that could interfier with connection? anything else giving off a wireless signal, such as a cordless phone etc?
sometimes things like this can interfere with wireless signals coming from routers.

Other than that, Might be an idea to try and change the channel or your wireless signal coming from the router.

Hi,below is a problem I am having with a refurbished router I bought recently.
I have a netopia cayman 3300 dsl modem connected to a netgearwpn 824 wireless router.
I was unable to connect to the internet with a wired connection firstly. below is the ipconfig for a netopia modem

ip address
subnet mask
default gateway

and the ip config when the router is connected to the modem

ip address
subnet mask
default gateway

I was unable to connect to the internet when the ethernet connection from the netopia dsl modem was connected to the wan (internet) port of the netgear router.I eventually got wired internet connection by moving the connection from the modem to one of the ethernet ports of the router (instead of the wan port).I was now able to connect to the internet as the ip config for the router was now the same as the config for modem (router is now acting as a switch).however I cannot get wireless access to the internet, the wireless pci card seems to be copying the address of the homepage on my laptop everytime I try and connect to the internet by wireless.

any suggestions ???????????????

router's Firmware version: Version 1.02.08; release date: Apr 07, 2008

Hello all,

I have bought this router about 3 months ago and had it working perfectly. Untill one day through the last week it started to act really wierd, the router keeps on disconnecting every once and a while; for example sometimes it works continuously for 3 to 4 hours then suddenly disconnects by powering off the router then reconnecting by powering on !. However sometimes it works for 5-15 minutes then it disconnects and reconnects again . I have watched the router's power go off for a second then power on normally after that it reconnects.

I have called the ISP and they told me that the line which the internet comes through is working fine, from that one can conclude that the problem is from the router. However what the problem is I dont know

If anyone have faced or even knows how to fix this problem please reply...

Your circuit the router is plugged into has a problem, the router's power supply is faulty, or the router itself is faulty.

Hi - my first post so please be kind. I have searched for a previous answer, but similar ones all seem more complex problems than mine!

I am running XP on my PC and connecting to the Internet with a Netgear 54 Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Router DG834G v3.

Most of the time it is fine (and it also runs a second PC upstairs through the wireless network OK).

Then about once or twice a day, the Internet light goes from green to orange, flashing on and off for about 10 seconds, then off altogether for a few seconds, then flashing orange again and so on. At this point if I click on the Internet connection symbol in the bottom right hand corner of the screen (task tray?) it tells me I am connected, but with no speed, and I can't access any websites.

If I try the connection diagnostics in XP, it tells me to check the wires, turn the modem off and on again, but when that doesn't work just tells me to contact my ISP.

Each time this has happened I have tried re-booting the PC, and tried turning the power to the router/modem off for a few minutes and back on, no luck, and then eventually, for no apparent reason, the link seems to recover itself and I am back online. (This morning it took about 30 minutes)

We get our Internet through overhead telephone wires (no cable out here in the sticks) and the best speed I ever show on teh connection status screen is 2.5Mbps, but often much less.

I suppose my real question is this: Is the problem likley to bewith my Router/modem? Or is ... Read more

After months of paying $55 a month for Comcast cable, I've decided to give cheaper Qwest DSL a try. My cable setup is D-Link DCM-202 cable modem -> Vonage VT1005V voice terminal -> Netgear MR814v2 wireless router. With cable service my Vonage worked fine as did the wireless router/internet for my laptop.

I just replaced the cable service with Qwest DSL (with GT701 DSL modem). DSL works fine if I connect my laptop directly to the DSL modem. When I add the Vonage modem and the wireless router, I can't get to internet anymore (wireless). Vonage still works fine and I can access the wireless router from my laptop, but can't get to internet.

Hey guys.

So basically I purchased a new NETGEAR router (the NETGEAR R6300) as my Virgin Media Super Hub firewall is seriously degrading. They claim their firewall is exceptional and great against DDoS attacks, yet when such attacks hit the router, it completely destroys the DHCP/modem connectivity to Virgin Media's dedicated server... (cabinet at the end of my road) practically brutally murders it. So I had to constantly contact VMs Technical Support (150 on my landline) to ask them to send out another replacement router (as the current router from VM I have is the 5th replacement due to the attacks by the same person) they refused to do so. They just continued to claim that I don't know what a Distributed Denial of Service attack (or DDoS) is and that my router was being flooded by packets by means of "downloading".

Like, DAFUQ?! "Downloading"...what kind of idiot do they think I am? So anyway, I finish setting up my network with this new router, and because VMs Super Hub wouldn't allow me to change the dynamic IP, or the DNS for that matter, I setup my new router to use the OpenDNS DNS IPs, and am now on a different dynamic IP. Plus the router itself is spectacular! I can do so much more with it than I could with VMs craphub, and would certainly recommend it.

This is really strange of an issue for me. I have a wireless adapter (WPN111), and well... the only issue is installing it. The device will work eventually, it just needs to be installed. But every time I try (using the latest version from the manufacturers website), it will not work. The issue is probably a lot to do with the driver. In device manager it always comes up as something with a yellow ! over an icon.
The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28)

A service installation section in this INF is invalid.
To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.Click to expand...

I have felt the two websites here useful somehow:

So maybe it is something to do with C:\Windows\inf, and an inf file somewhere. I can't find it with the help of seeing what file got created around the time I installed it (date created), or by looking at the filename.

A:NetGear RangeMax installing issue

Well, if you look at the .INF files supplied with the driver, can you find any of them with a Windows search? I presume you looked in the INF folder and didn't find it? Did you look in the event log to see if additional information may have been logged? How about an install log, maybe there's a clue there?

I take it you have TWO access points and want only one to be used publicly.

On the public AP, set an easy to recognize SSID and no encryption.

On the private, set a different SSID, add encryption and consider not broadcasting

I have a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP with a wireless connection to a broadband router.

Several weeks ago my laptop started dropping the internet connection randomly (I'm alos unabel to access email when this happens).

My wireless network icon in my toolbar shows the connection as 'Excellent' but for some reason both Internet and Email is not available. The only way to fix the problem has been to restart my laptop which is very frustrating.

I've noticed that this also happens randomly when I'm at home (using different wireless broadband modem) so I think the issue is my laptop not the 2 x routers/modems.

I'm running NOD32 for security as well (but have been for 4 years now with no problems till now).

I recently changed routers to a NetGear 3500 wireless N router. I was using an old Dell router which worked fine but had limited range. I assume that was a G type router. I have several laptops with wireless cards. I did not upgrade the cards when I got the new router so I assume they are G type cards. I run a computer with a N card which I needed the extended range of wireless servive and with the new router, I no longer have a range problem with that computer.

The older laptops now go bluescreen when they are connected with a wireless connection to the router. If I shut the router off, the computers work fine. If I bring the computers to another location that has wireless service, they work okay. If I run hem in my house with the router on, they go bluescreen.

I have been unable to find any information about this type of problem, Someone told me they experienced the same thing following the new installation of the same model router. They have not figured out how to fix it yet.

Do I need to replace the cards in all of the computers or go back to the Dell, or is there something else that can be done to resolve this problem. Many thanks for any help or suggestions that you can provide.

Well as you can see from the title I have a Netgear wpn824 wireless router. Here's the problem, it was running perfectly fine this afternoon with no issues. So I decide to change the access points name and I did that through and so on and so forth. Well after a minute of saving the laptop doesn't see it anymore as an access point and I don't know how to reset it. I've tried pressing that little reset button in the back of the router but nothing so far. I've also tried unplugging it and yet still nothing. Can someone please help me with this? Thanks!
Oh and also, I lost the cd that came with it and got the pdf from the netgear site but don't know what to do. And I've seen on this forum that a cd isn't needed for a router but not sure how to do it.

I will click a page and nothing will happen. I then have to reset the router at the wall in order for it to start working again. It is becoming really annoying now. Some details of what i am using...

Netgear WPN824 V3 router
Macbook white running osx

When the internet stops working the airport wireless connection symbol on my mac still indicates that i am connected. I have connected the router to the mac with a ethernet cable and the problem appears to stop. No problems loading pages. Im guessing it is a problem that occurs when wireless. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks.

Hello all,

I have a Netgear WPN824 router attached to my cable broadband modem. My PC is connected via ethernet cable and I also have a PS3 connected wirelessly.

The problem is when im on the internet, I can try to view another page (any page) and the PC says
'No connection to the internet is currently available. To view Internet content that has been saved on your computer, click WORK OFFLINE. Click try again to attempt to connect'

I click 'try again' or 'reconnect' which ever it is and it fires right back with no problems?
Now it doesnt do this all the time, maybe 5 or 6 times a night and at no perticular point, its just random.

My PS3 keeps the wireless signal perfectly at 100% and is uPNP enabled in the router settings. There are no problems with with this connection (only the PSNetwork problems). It just seems to be the PC which is having issues!

Has anyone got any idea why this would be happening?

EDIT: In the time it took to write this post, when I clicked on SUBMIT, the WORK OFFLINE box mentioned above appeared. TRY AGAIN and its fine!!!??

When I try to connect the PS3 using wireless connection it says could not obtain IP address. The router works, I have connected other computers to it. And when I connect the playstation using a wired connection it works fine. I have tried turning on UPNP and I have turned off the security setting on the router, and I also have 100% signal.

A:Connect playstation3 using Netgear wpn824 v3

can you try another area near the router
My Son had this problem on an xbox - could not connect tried everything - then his brother came back from UNI and set up a mates xbox in his bedroom and worked perfectly
for some reason his xbox wont work in the living corner of the house

any way ignoring that for the moment

have you tried turning the router off and all the attached devices
then switch on modem/router make sure all the lights settle
then switch on ps3

So here is my case:

Verizon's Westell 6100:
Modem/Router, provides 1 incoming address (provided by VZ) and provides 1 internal address (

Netgear Wireless Router WGT624 v4:
Wireless Router, accepts and provides 10.0.0.X wired and wirelessly.

Although Verizon's Router indicates that it is on Bridge mode, the damn thing isnt. I thought the main concept of bridging was to become practically invisible and automatically reroute all traffic to the next device, which is what I want.
I want to ultimately use the Netgear device to set all my rules and settings, instead, I have to do it on both.
For instance, Xbox Live is not working 100% properly. I can only play video games without being able to join specific games, or perform any in-game video/voice chat.

I have tried NATing the device. No luck.
I have also tried setting the Netgear device as a Wireless Base Station. Either way, I just would like to have my network ignore 1 device, and have the second one invisibly reroute all the access.

Is that possible? Could you please help?

Thanks to all!

A:Netgear Wireless Router and Westell Modem + Router = Routed Bridge failure

Well, since the "modem" is supplying a private IP address, it's obvious that it's not in bridge mode, that can only happen with a NAT layer, aka a router.

Try this solution to configure it for bridge mode, direct from Verizon:

I have been trying to find a way to connect, forward the signal, recieve the signal from my Verizon Fios wireless router up to my WGT624 V3 Netgear router.

Is there a way that I can modify my wirless port on my Netgear to recieve a signal wirelessly from my Verizon Wireless router?

My Neighbor did it once with another wireless router, but he can not remember how he did it. I am thinking it had something to do with the Firmware.

If anyone can help me with this that would be great.

I'm basically trying to push the wireless signal from my Verizon router in my basement, up to my wireless Netgear router which is recieving the signal on the main level so that I can plug my wired (non wireless) laptop into the ethernet port which is receiving wireless signal from the Verizon router in the basement in order to gain access to the internet.

Can this be done with the equipment listed above and or some additional firmware and configuration?

Thank you for all your assistance on this in advance.

I have Qwest/CenturyLink DSL, and recently replaced the Actiontec M1000 modem which crapped out after 5 years of service. Replaced it with a Netgear DM111PSP v2 router/modem. Now I cannot get either of my two routers, the Linksys WRT54G or WRT160N V2 to broadcast wireless internet. I've spent the most time on the WRT160N. It will broadcast a wireless signal, but devices that attempt to connect to the internet time out while "obtaining IP address". BTW, I just happen to have two wireless routers on hand, I only need one to work.

I can get internet through the hard wire connection. I have the Netgear modem hooked up to the "internet" port of the WRT160N router, and the computer is connected to one of the four ethernet ports on the back of the router. I can access both router and modem setup pages using this setup. The Netgear modem is set up for DHCP server, PPPoA encapsulation, and gets its DNS address dynamically from the ISP. The WRT160N is also set up for automatic DHCP configuration. These are the settings given by running each set up wizard, and this has set me up for some DHCP conflicts.

I think that setting up a dual modem/router in transparent bridging mode (PPPoE) in theory turns off the DHCP, allowing the WRT160N to handle DHCP, but I have no luck even getting my hard-wired internet connection to work if I switch from PPPoA to PPPoE mode. Even if I cut the WRT160N out of the loop and connect the computer direct to the DM111PSP. No internet,... Read more

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses through, I'd assign the secondary router as it's IP address, for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Hello folks...

Recently purchased a netgear wpn824 v3 wireless router. I did a bit of research to see what would be the most secure method of setup on and opted for a WPA-PSK, Access Control List.

Now we have 2 brand new laptops. My macbook (white, 160gb version), a acer running windows vista. There is also a advent laptop running xp which is 2 years old. I managed to add the 3 labtops individual ip address's to the access list and set up the password.

Now, only my macbook is running wirelessly and the other 2 keep failing to connect, either at the password stage or more often than not before then. I have been using computers for some years for personal and work use but this is a bit of a step up for me and could really do with some help. Tried the search function here but didn't really come across anything i could see that was similar. Any extra info required i am more then happy to give.

Bought a refurbished WPN824. Hooked it up and no trying to set it up on my computer. I have a WPN111 USB 2.0 and had that software search for it and it didn't see it, no prob.
Went to IP address - and as it says on many forums I entered ADMIN for login user name and PASSWORD for password, didn't like that. Tried ADMIN and 1234 for the password, nope.
Here's the weird thing, when I go to that address the authentication box for the user name and password says "Enter user name and password for "WRT54G" at"
Now that's a linksys router...WTH???
Did I get a netgear box with old linksys inside? is that even possible?
Anyway I also went to and that page can't be found.
I also went to and that's just the Netgear FAQ page for issues.
Any help here on getting this going would be greatly appreciated.
Oh, I did reset the router to restore setting and restarted everything.

I have a remote user who connects to our network via Cisco VPN client. He has no problems connecting, however, once in he has very slow Internet or the Internet won't load at all. He uses a Netgear WPN824na wireless router and cable modem. Here are some more things to consider:

-He has no problems with Internet when off the VPN, nor does any other computer in his house
-When he connects directly (cabled) into the wireless router from his laptop and connects to the VPN he has no problems with Internet
-When he uses a company provided Internet broadband card to connect to the Internt, again he has no problems.
-He has reset the modem and router several times
-He has tried connecting the cable modem directly into his laptop, but could not get any connection.

So in a nutshell, he can always connect to the VPN, however when accessing wirelessly, he has slow or non-existent Internet. If he connects wired into the router and access VPN he does not have Internet problems at all.
I am new to VPN and wireless connection problems. Any advice. Thank you!

We have a 3-story house and the main router is in the basement, so we have a poor signal in the far upstairs in our room. My girlfriend's brother had a wireless router hooked up (from the main router) up here to boost the signal, and he just moved out so we bought a new wireless router and it is refusing to work.

It's a Belkin Surf wireless router.
I installed everything from the CD, and then used Windows 7 to give it a new name/password/etc.
I can connect to the network and view that my girlfriend's computer is also connected to it, but it says we have no internet access and gives the yellow triangle with an exclamation mark in the bottom right corner.
So far I've tried restarting the main modem, restarting the router, and changing the encryption settings on the modem to the 3 different options (including disabled) and nothing is working.
I thought maybe it was just my computer and windows 7 since it is kind of crappy, so I tried disabling and re-enabling the wireless network card and restarting like was suggested in other posts and nothing has worked.
When I run the cmd and do the ipconfig/all (when connected to the new network that doesn't work) it says "media state: disconnected" for my wireless. I don't know if that's important or not.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me.

I have Windows XP on all of the computers in my house. One of them is connected to the internet through Cox High Speed. I then have 2 notebooks and 2 PCs that are connected to this one through a wireless router. The internet on the notebooks and one of the PCs works, however, one of them cannot connect to the internet. There's an icon on the tray that tells me that the Network Connection is "Excellent", but it won't connect to the internet. It's been able to access the internet before and it sometimes would sparatically not work for short periods of time, but it was always because the network connection was lost. It now has a network connection and the internet will not work (sorry for being repetitive, just trying to be as clear as possible). Do you know what the problem could be?

Hi All,

It connects to the router just fine. I can also connect to the admin page of the router using the problem laptop. I have pinged the problem laptop from a working laptop and I am getting a response. I don't have a cordless phone so I know it's not any type of interference.

However, anytime it tries to connect to any server out on the internet, it says can not find the server. It can not ping or "ping" returns "Ping request could not find host ..." All other laptops are connecting to the internet just fine.

After a series of computer and network failures, mostly due to electrical storms and electrical contractors, I decided to upgrade my old Netgear router to a new Netgear Wireless-N router.

I have used Network Magic to manage my networked computers and when I decided to upgrade NM, the new version didn't support my old router. So, it seemed like an all over upgrade/update was in order.

What should have been a simple process-- turn everything off, disconnect the old router, replace it with the new router, and go through the set up process (cable modem on, then router on, etc.) has turned into a mystery.

I used the Netgear startup wizard, followed step by step (more than once) and each time I got to the last part of the process, it stalled saying "No Router Found."
It was only after several unsuccessful attempts, that I decided to open my control panel and check things out. Network Connections showed my status as "connected," so I opened my browser and found that I am able to connect to the internet.

What I have not been able to do is to set up my network, network security, etc. I tried to initiate Network Magic for set up, with the same results-- "no router found."

Anyone know what I have going on here? Am I only connected through the LAN connection, perhaps?

My router is a Netgear RangeMax WPN824 v3; Firmware version V1.0.7_1.0.8NA (which is the latest at the time of this writing). The router is connected by ethernet to my iMac, and I use the wireless for my Macbook Pro, my iPod touch, occasionally a Wii, and guests' laptops when they visit the house.

Most of the time it works flawlessly. But on occasion (usually at intervals of 3-4 weeks or so), it seems to spontaneously stop broadcasting its SSID. This isn't a matter of changed or incorrect settings on the router or on the wireless devices. Literally what will happen is: One or more of us will be working wirelessly just fine, and then suddenly all of us will lose the wireless signal simultaneously, on all devices, and the router's SSID stops showing up in the list of available networks.

When this happens, we haven't lost Internet, because the iMac (with the direct ethernet connection the the router) continues to connect to the Internet fine.

I have a unique name for the SSID, so I don't think the name is conflicting with any of my neighbors' routers.

On these occasions, when I then log into the Router Manger and select "Advanced Wireless Settings," I find that the "Enable SSID Broadcast" checkbox is still checked (liars!). And if I then simply click "Apply," things return back to normal, and SSID starts broadcasting again. For another 3-4 weeks until the problem recurs. :-(

I can also successfully restart the SSID... Read more

Hi all

I just bought and installed a Linksys Wireless Broadband router. It's directly hooked up to a desktop w/ Windows XP and SBC Yahoo DSL. My laptop is the only other PC currently communicating w/ the router. Everything seems to install fine, and my laptop recognizes the network instantly, but after about 1 day the internet connection is lost on the desktop. If I unplug the network cable from the router and plug it back into it's original location on the desktop the internet comes back instantly and I have to reinstall the router again for my laptop to pick up the network. This has happened multiple times, each time consistently after about 1 day. Is there something simple I can do to fix this that maybe I missed when installing the router?

Now I think I may have to add the Wii's MAC address

Do I add this in the 'Local Network' Setup tab?

If so, it's asking for:
Operation IP Address - [What would I input here?]
Mac Address
Lease Time(Sec) - [What would I input here????]

Or, maybe I'm wrong with that possible solution and there's something else I could do to try and connect my Wii??

Thankyou in advance,

A:Wii internet connection problem through wireless router

log into the router and remove the secruity and any mac filtering and then see if the Wii will connect - then once you know its all working you add those back on if you want them

you will need to add the MAC address into the router for all devices that connect

the router would normally be set to DHCP - so the IP Address is supplied to devices from the router - but if you have this disabled in the router then you need to add a fixed IP on the Wii setup page

Mac Address - would be entered in the router
Lease time is usually set in the router for all DHCP connections

First time on the forums here, if you need more info than I have given let me know.

Alright, I purchased a DL-524 wireless router a long time ago (4, maybe 5 years) and haven't had any problems to speak of. My house has 5 computers, all of which are usually hooked up to the internet, below is a list with their operating systems.

1 Windows 7 - desktop
2 Windows Vista - laptops
1 Windows XP - laptop (mine)
1 Windows XP - desktop (also mine, only occasionally connected to the internet)

For some reason, about two days ago the router ceased to function properly (literally, I woke up and it didn't work, no warnings, no nothing). All the lights are blinking normally, but the Ethernet cable that is connected to the modem doesn't seem to be recognized. I borrowed a friend's switch (how I'm online right now) but since Advanced Cable Communications only allows for one computer to be online at a time, that cannot be a long term fix. I followed the instructions here to the letter (specifically the 6th post), but when it pinged the IP address and any external websites it wouldn't recognize them. I have included the text from the command prompt/dos instructions below.

Incidentally, "Walter II in the Den" is my family's desktop Windows 7. Yes, it's weird. No, I didn't name it.

Restarted computer countless times

I've tried system restore to a previous point

Disabled firewall

Reset winsock

I don't know what else to do.

Please bare in mind that with me being unable to access the Internet on my netbook I am posting this via my iPhone and therefore I won't be able to copy and paste any information direct, but I can type out any lines if you give specific details on which bits you'd need to help diagnose my problem

I know this topic has been on here before, but I can't find one specific to mine. Here's what's going on:

I had my desktop & wireless router all hooked up (DSL internet) and running fine in one room. I moved the desktop to another room, so i disconnected everything to move it and hooked it back up in the new room (different phone jack).

When the wires are plugged in, it registers on the modem and on the router that I have the internet connection.

The Desktop picks up the LAC but I'm assuming its just picking up the router power and not the actual connection, because it will not let me connect to the internet.

The laptop connects to the network but not the internet.

I have the DSL line plugged into the modem; a network cable running from that to the 'internet' port on the router, and another ethernet cable running from an ethernet port on the router to the network port on the pc (sounds right, right?) lol.

Here's the catch...If I disconnect the router altogether, and connect the network cable directly from the modem to the pc or laptop, viola I can access the internet.

As you can probably tell, I've done lots of trial & error in this process. I'm thinking there's a setup or configuring thing I may be missing. I guess my mind is thinking that something like that shouldn't have to be done considering it's all hardware that was connected and installed and configured before. I'm not ... Read more

A:Internet connection on wireless router & modem, but no access

Reset the wireless router back to factory default settings. Then reconfigure it back. I would backup your settings first though on the router. That feature is hidden in the tools tab on the router. Did you have the power go out or what happen prior to this?

I keep losing my internet connection like every 5-10 minutes, usually being disconnected for only a few seconds. I lose my connection while surfing, in IM and playing games online, which is really frustrating. I think my router is the problem but I'm not sure. I have a Belkin G Plus MIMO Wireless Router and to check it, today I unplugged my router and plugged in my LAN cable directly into my laptop. I didn't lose my connection the entire hour plus I was online while my laptop was plugged directly to my LAN. So, it's not a problem with my ISP. and I need a wireless router for my 2 desktops and laptop. What should I do, get rid of my router and buy a better one or is there a way I can configure my router to fix my bad connection?

here's some quick specs: linksys router wrt160n v3, verizon modem gt701c, windows xp service pack 3, verizon DSL, southern california.

I have been able to connect to the internet directly through the modem only...but i need my wireless back working. I've reset my router a few times recently trying things i've read on forums from people with similar problems. The most recent thing i did was RESET the router -> connected modem/router/computer properly -> turned them all back on in the proper order -> check to see if websites would open. They didn't so i tried doing this, which was suggested...i plugged the router into the computer and enabled MAC address and then pressed the Clone MAC address button and saved....then I tturned everything off again and rebooted everything again in the proper order and still couldn't load any web pages. Here are my IPCONFIG/ALL read outs for both when i'm hooked up with the router & modem (which isnt working) and directly to the modem (which is working)

this is the one with the router & modem:

A:No wireless internet connection after reseting router...can't figure it out.

The gt701c is a modem/router that is using the same LAN subnet as the Linksys. If by "reset" you mean that you reset the Linksys to factory default settings that could explain why you were working before but not afterwards, as you probably were using a different subnet on the Linksys. I suggest that you do one of these two choices ...

a. Change the Linksys to use a different LAN subnet; e.g., 192.168.3.x (make sure the Dhcp server's address range changes to match).

b. Don't use the NAT layer of the Linksys ...

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remainin... Read more

Have been using my new Lynksys wireless G router at home for several months with no problems. Suddenly, both laptops (one connected by ethernet cable, the other wireless) lose internet connection freqently (10 to 15 times a day). Using Charter Cable for ISP. Both laptops still have connection to the router and the Charter cable modem box shows all green lights with internet connected. The only way to get it back is to power cycle the router. Just unplug it (the power cord) and plug it back in and all is well...for a while, then it loses connection again. Have done extensive troubleshooting with Charter and found nothing. No service outages or intermittent service. Any ideas would be apprecitated. Do I need to replace the router? Have not tried connecting one of my machines directly to the cable modem. I guess I will do that next but thought someone may have heard of this problem before. Thanks for your help.

What does the router itself say about the internet connection? See the status page.

Make sure the auto-disconnect feature is disabled and the auto-reconnect enabled on the router.

Hi. Is it possible to create a network between two laptops and share the internet signal from a 3g usb mobile broadband connection. I've been trying to accomplish this with a TP-Link TL-WR641G router with no success. I've trawled several forums but can't really find a definitive answer. Any help would be much appreciated.
