Career paths in the I.T. field?

Q: Career paths in the I.T. field?

I was wondering what would be a good career path to follow or combine with a mcse certification. Would it be better to go the cisco way and get the ccnp or with red hat and do the rhce? I am currently in South-Africa and been around to our local job sites but it seems that demand for both are low at the moment.

I guess this may be a tiny bit off the subject here, but I am attempting this in windows 7.

I have a program file manager tool called 'Directory Opus' that is capable of calling windows external programs and passing them the current directory the file manager is sitting on.

So far so good.

Now I want to call a cygwin (linux/unix emulator for windows) terminal with that file manager.

Checking properties on the cygwin Icon I got the path: C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico -

So it is a path to a command and an argument to that command.

Actually I guess it is 2 arguments to a command since I think '-' in that position means to feed anything on STDIN to the command. At least that would be true in unix shell programming.

So using the Directory opus setup I pass this call:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - <and here add {s}>'

So the call ends up:
'@async:C:\cygwin\bin\mintty.exe -i /Cygwin-Terminal.ico - {s}'

That call does just what it is supposed to. It passed the current file absolute address however cygwin terminal does not understand the windows path notation. If I were passing it: C:\subdir\blah\ It would just say 'No such file' Cygwin terminal wants to see /cygdrive/c/subdir/blah Or at least I think that is what is happing.

So to cut to the chase.... I'd like to put a little wrapper to Cygwin terminal in there with the code necessary to convert 'C:\subdir\blah\' to '/cygdrive/c/subdir/blah/'

But, I do not know how ... Read more

I would ask on DonationCoder.com specifically this forum:
General Software Discussion - DonationCoder.com

The reason is I know there are a bunch of DO aficionados, who also use Linux, on that forum. I've never tried DO myself. I have played around with CygWin. But it's been a few years.

If the site wants a donation to sign up just explain to Mouser why you want to post etc.. I think he'll be sympathetic.

I have a table titled time_slips used to track the amount of time an attorney spends with a member. In the time_slips table there is a field titled reference_id which is a combo box pulling it's displayed information from another table titled references. Also in the time_slips table is a field named details which is native to this table.

My question is, can I have the details field auto-populate "no charge" when a certain reference id is selected (i.e. 300)?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I use due dates on my Outlook tasks. When I customize my Tasks list (in the Calendar view) to group by due date, I just get too many groupings (one for each due date!). I would like to know if I can create a custom field called 'Due Month' and/or 'Due Week', extracted from the 'Due Date', so I can view my tasks by what is due during a given week or month. If the answer is yes, any suggestions on the technique I would use would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, before answering you question can I suggest some improvements to your database.
Currently you do not have any "Key", "Indexed" fields in your tables and there are no relationships set up between the tables.
Also do you really need the Archive Table?
The data looks like it has been exported in from a spreadsheet, relational databases work quite differently to spreadsheets, so to make the most of their advantages you need to correctly relate your Tables.
Your UserID Roster also has some disconnect between the Field Names and the actual data in them, particularly the Name and Type feilds.
In the Supervisor Table the Birthdate does not seem to have Translated correctly.

I'm doing a quick-and-(very)dirty design as a proof of concept. During this process I fat-fingered the word Description, as Ddescription. No problem, I know what it means, right. But it annoyed me, so I changed the underlying table (where the error occurred), deleted the control from the form, and added the (now correctly spelled) control.

However, every time I try and ruin the form it wants a value for the now non-existent field Ddescription. I simpy click-through, and the form runs fine. When I look at the available fields in the form's View query's Field List, it still shows Ddescription, and i seems to think it's coming from the underlying table.

Any ideas on how I can remove this phantom field? I can't find anything called "The_View_for_form_FooBar" anywhere, but I know it must exist somewhere...

I work as a NOC/Helpdesk technician. My work involves basic windows and IPT administration. I managed to get a couple of certifications from cisco like the CCNA, CCNP and CCNA Security. I've been reading ASA and completed CVoice. I don't have much hands on experience though. I was wondering what could be right step in my career. I know the real world is a lot more different when compared to the books. What roles would be challenging but doable? If you are aware of any books that bridge the gap between the cisco books and the real world, that would be awesome!

Is there anyone here who works in the field of Information Systems i.e. Systems Analyst, DB analyst/programmers etc.

I'm finishing university this year with an IT degree majoring in info. sys. and minoring managment, marketing.

I'd just like to get as much career info as I can: Such as how did you guys start off. What extra education did you find valuable to the field. What things did you do to move up to your positions etc.

The other thing as well - Im getting around a distinction average ( havent worked out my actual GPA). However when you start working in the industry do they expect you know everything. Like here Rob, make us this database. How do things normally work.

It sucks. Recently I've been doing side jobs for other small businesses but I'm not sure what to charge. One business in particular, a restaurant, wants me to set up a wireless network for there customers to get access to the internet. Can anyone tell me what to charge? Has anyone been in a similar situation and had these side jobs turn into a full time business? Would this be a business that just one individual could handle say if I was just working with small businesses?

I am working on a database that stores genus, species, and variety I want to sort the data with genus, then species, then variety.

Now the tricky part. Sometimes there is no species. When this is the case, I want the database to sort that record off of variety.

I have though of a way to do this, but need help with the code.

If I make a species2 field, I could create an expression that would look at the species field. If the species field is empty, it could copy the data from variety. If it is not empty, then copy the data in the species field.

Once the species2 field has the updated data, I could then do a sort

genus, species2, variety

The report would have genus, species and variety showing and species2 would be checked off to not show in the report.

I am using Microsoft Access 2000.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

A:Access - if field is blank, copy field A, if not copy field B

You should not actually need another field to do this, just another column in your report's Query. Something like this as a Field header :-

dummySpecies: iif(isnull([species]), [genus], [species])

this should provide a column with the species in if it there and the genus if it is not, which you can use in place of your actual species field in the report for sorting.

Hello, I'm new to these forums, and I signed up to help as well as ask questions.

I am 19, and at the very beginnings of my IT career. I've been in the field for about 3 months now, and I love every bit of it.

With my new job, I will be put on a project to implement a thin client solution. I am writing because I have absolutely no idea how to go about this project. Though I can rear cold facts and create a setup at my home, I greatly preffer human interaction. If anyone can give me some pointers, please do.

The situation with the project I'll be working on is, they have a dual processor server running Windows 2003. It is a small company who wants the cash registers at two remote locations to be running as thin clients off of the central server. The two locations are using Business Class DSL to connect to the internet, but I am unaware of what the connection is for the central office. This is all the information I've been given so far, I do not know what software they'll be using, I assume METAFRAME, but I cannot be sure.

Any input will be greatly valued.

Thank you,

Brian

Well Hello There

Quick question fer y'all

I've been doing system administration for quite some time and honestly, getting a little on the bored side. I've been considering a move more towards the development side of things (guess I'd say..more on the side of scripting/web dev,etc...), as I find myself really spending so much time writing and changing the scripts for my own website and for the company login scripts due to being more interested in this side of it.

So, does anyone have any input on what language(s) to really focus on and possible training? Something that'd be pretty desirable to possible employers in the future.

Thanks Ahead of Time,
Mike

Hey there, hope this isn't too big of a problem or one that's been posted in the past, but i have the following installed, the sims origonal, livin large, house party (all origonal, not deluxe or super), hote date, vaccation, unleashed, and superstar. I do not know at what point the problem arose since I didn't give many of my sims careers, but for some reason when the car shows up to pick them up, they cannot get into the car, no matter how close they are to it, i could stand them by the street in wait for it and the action would show up for a split second then disappear and the car would just take off after honking for 20 minutes. Is there any way to fix this? Oh, and another thing you could possibly help me with, just wondering if I could replace those lame *** pj's with better one's, and if so, how? Hello everybody

Apologies if this thread is in the wrong area, but i didn't know where else to post it

I've been working as an I.C.T Technician for just over 2 years now and i am looking for ways i can progress and improve.

I passed my A+ and CCNA and i have learnt a lot of experience on the job but i feel as though i have come to a bit of a standstill with progression... And i havent touched on any of my CCNA stuff so a lot of i think i'll have forgotten

I wouldn't mind a go at web design, but i think i'd prefer the more technical support side of things... I'd like to learn about Server management, network support etc.

1. Is there any courses that you guys would recomend?

2. Or any other advice that would help me along my way?

I have been looking at the MCDST (Microsoft Certified Desktop Support Technician) and did some practice questions but a lot of it looked fairly straightforward (although the title would help)...

CompTIA Network+ and the MCSA look alright, then progressing towards an MCSE, but i'm not too sure!

Any advice would be great as i do enjoy my job and i'm keen to learn more

If you need any more information, let me know but i tried not to write loads to put people off

Thanks again,

Lanks

Top 5 IT Security Certifications To Enhance Your Career
While not having an IT security certification doesn?t disqualify you from getting a job offer or promotion, but prospective employers looking for industry-leading credentials look at it as one measure of qualifications and commitment to quality. As the market for information security talent heats up and the skills shortage continues, infosec experts who have the right combination of credentials and experience are in remarkably high demand.

?A certification today is like a college degree,? says Grady Summers, America?s leader for information security program management services at Ernst & Young. ?You may not hire a candidate just because they have one, but it is something that you come to expect in this field.?

?There is no replacement for real-world experience,? Summers says. ?However, certifications are important and have become de facto minimum criteria when screening resumes.?
Here is a list of top five security certifications, which are based on review of job boards and interviews with IT security recruiters and employers:

I'm interested in pursuing a career in software engineering for Mac development. My question is:

Would it be wise to get a Mac computer before high school graduation? I've basically grown up with PCs, so Windows is all I'm really familiar with. People on Yahoo! A:Question about Software Development Career

Hi d6d24r94,

If you are targeting Mac development for your software engineering career, by all means get a Mac (laptop), but make sure you touch base with Linux and get a Live CD to trial it. Make sure you tether it with security locating software to geo-locate it if it is stolen. A degree in computer science or software engineering at the Masters level wouldn't hurt either.

So i know its been asked before, but whats the best way to learn and train in IT?
As much as id love to its not practical to go to local college etc right now. So had been looking at online courses. Which as you can imagine is a right minefield of sales guys and websites promising the earth for cheap fees. There are so many IT training courses online you just dont know which firm is trusted, whether the course is accredited or there "own brand" certificate.
I have been looking at one course provider that offers dozens of courses for one reasonable fee, All recognised compTIA, Microsoft, Cisco, Oracle etc. But when you drill down to it, it appears all you get for the money is videos and PDFs etc. No tutor, no support, no exams etc.
Which leads me to think, well maybe i can learn from books and youtube etc. But first question, do you need to take a recognised course, or can one simply "self teach" and just turn up for an exam? (compTIA mainly but Microsoft etc too).
Thanks all

I did some searching online for a solution and some sites said to save the objects package file onto my desktop and use it to replace the objects file I have saved on my computer. I tried this twice and could not fix the icons from being blank.

Another site said to delete the university expansion pack and reinstall. Will deleting the expansion pack cause me to lose the sims and stuff I created? Or does anyone have any other solutions?

Hello,

At my current job I am working very closely with VMWare AirWatch. Since AirWatch is a security and compliance tool, I figured my best bet is to learn more about security since AirWatch will be my main project for a while. I?m sorry if this is a silly question, but I was hoping someone could help me with my security career path based on my current knowledge. I figured if you guys know what I?m currently doing, maybe you could tell me where to go from here.

I have about 2 years of experience with heavy desktop support, Windows Systems Administration, and project management. Some of the bigger things I?ve done in the past 7 months;

1. Implemented AirWatch on-prem.
2. Built the production servers for AirWatch (console server, DSS server, web server, and SQL server.. although I had a DBA help me with the SQL server).
3. Managed and did the Windows 10 rollout to my enterprise.
4. Encryption to all Windows 10 devices.
5. Create VM?s, manage snaps, storage, and ISO?s in ESXi.
6. Created production Windows servers for the app team.
7. Fixed AD replication via sites and services.
8. Demoted 8 domain controllers.
9. Work with VP of Legal and Compliance to ensure security best practices.
10. Build testing environments.

Things on a regular basis/smaller things;
1. Desktop deployments (Mac and Windows).
2. Imaging with MDT.

A:Best thing to do towards a IT security career based on my current knowledge?

Well, what do you want to get into, specifically? Security is a broad field with a lot of very different specialties.

It looks like the bulk of your experience is with systems/servers - there are systems security engineer positions, but I don't know if you have enough direct security experience for those. If not, then maybe a SOC position would be a good fit. Or you could progress in a sysadmin type of position - you won't get a security title but the job will most likely involve security.

It will also help to know some networking, scripting, and Linux, if you don't, already.

I know the Include Field will include part of the text from an Include File if it is in a bookmark. The format is {IncludeText "File Path" Bookmark}. I have 2 files: Source and Target.

Source is a form template. I included a Text Form Field and gave it the bookmark AA. I also included other text in a "normal" bookmark, BB.

In Target I have 2 fields: {IncludeText "C:\\Source.dot" AA} and {IncludeText "C:\\Source.dot" BB}. The text from BB shows up, but the one for AA is blank.

If I go into Source and look under Bookmarks, both AA and BB are there.

BTW, I have tried it with the Source form both "Protected" and "Unprotected" and it didn't make any difference.

Any idea why this is happening, and more importantly, any idea on how to make this work? If not, it seems like a real bug in Word 2003 as they are both definitely considered to be bookmarks.

Thank you,

Stuart

I have a unique problem. I am trying to use the INCLUDEPICTURE field code. The document I'm using is linked to a very sophisticated database software program and I have received instructions on merging data from this database INTO the INCLUDEPICTURE field to create the filename for the photo files. An example is typed below:

{INCLUDEPICTURE "G:\\START\\IMAGES\\PHOTOS\\{MERGEFIELD "PROVIDER_LAST_NAME"}_{MERGEFIELD "PROVIDER_FIRST_NAME"}.GIF"}

In the above example, the photo filenames are all matched up to the fields referenced in the formula (last_first.gif). These are the correct field codes, and the double slashes are important, I have been told.

My problem is that as soon as I save the document containing the above field, the underscores all change to "%20" and the field doesn't work!! No one at my software vendor's help desk can help me with this problem. Does anyone know anything about preventing this??

Thank you!

Looking for a way to add a single file to an existing .ZIP file, but need to specify the path within the existing file structure.

Example - I ZIP a directory and it's subs with all of their files. It has about 6 different subs and each of them have up to 10 subs of their own.
C:\WEBSHARE\WWWROOT\PE\SUB1\file1.asp

I need to add 1 single file and tell it that the path I want it to go to is:
C:\WEBSHARE\WWWROOT\PE\SUB1\file2.asp

BUT - the file is not coming from the same directory on the system being used to create the ZIP.

Please help.

I did not know which forum to post in for my problem. Sorry if this is the wrong one.

I recently tried to relocate my data folders and something went wrong. When I was done I had dble folders. This is a picture of the results.
Attachment 171583

I moved them back to it's original place. I want to be able to move them a separate partician. I know that the problem has something to do with paths being incorrect.

When I click on the start menu and on my username icon it opens up my real user folders and not Libraries. I wonder if this is a clue. I have returned the start menu customizations to default and it still opens my user folders. Can someone help me figure this out?

Thanks.

Hi ariel5345

Have a look at this - Start Menu User Folder Buttons - Open to Users Instead of Libraries The second set of .reg files will reset your start menu open locations.

This should help put your user folders back to their default location - User Folders - Restore Default Location

Follow this excellent tutorial to help move your user folders successfully - User Folders - Change Default Location

I'm writing a batch file which calls a 32 bit .exe program. I want it to be compatible with the different Windows operating systems. The problem is that the path to "Program Files" is different depending which OS is being used. For instance:

I know the paths for these OS' since I use them:
- WinXP 32 bit: C:\Program Files\
- Vista 64 bit: C:\Program Files (x86)\

Could some kind souls please tell me what the 32bit paths are for:
- WinXP 64 bit:
- Vista 32 bit:

And for Windows 7 also would be nice:
- Win7 32 bit:
- Win7 64 bit:

Thanks!

A:Paths , Librabries ?

You need to remember that library's only point to the actual file somewhere on the network or on your own machine in the "user" files. If you need to delate something from the library you should delate the file from the actual source "my pictures" My documents" "my music".

But there is a way to make it work like you want.

Just go into Windows Media Player, choose the "organize" tab then "options" then choose the Library tab and set it to "delate files from the computer when delated from the Library. Although I believe that only works if you are delating files from Library of the machine that contains the source files.

That should allow for delating from the Library, but only from the machine that the files reside on, I don't believe it will work accross the network. It think it still works best if you delate from the file source instead of the Library.

I check this out on net. Download the required isscript.msi, which should automatically install the required installshield again. But then i get it automatically pointing towards my old hd

Can someone please help me understand whats wrong and how to find a solution?

I am trying to show a friend how to use a used computer he purchased recently. I have done some exploring in his files and folders. My experience is limited to XP only; so some things look different to me. I found this path: C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\services.exe which seems odd. Is a temp folder where Vista would place services.exe, or does this indicate a problem?

How do I make "Key" available?

A:How to make xp app paths key available

Sounds like a permissions issue of some kind.

Right click App Paths then click Permissions
Administrators and System should have Full Control and Read access, Power Users should have Read and Special, and Users should have Read access. Creator Owner should have Special. These should all be greyed out, meaning they are inherited.

I am using Oplisker program.

Oplisker (Open Source Play List Maker) | SourceForge.net

How to create m3u file from mp3s in different folders on your computer ?

It seems to only create mp3 playlist only from mp3s in the same folder.

I was interested to create playlist from different folders with different paths
to save to one m3u file, not m3u file in each folder from the mp3s within that folder.

I know I can edit the file so it goes to different paths using notepad, but that would defeat the purpose of this program making it easier to save playlst from diferent mp3s in diffrent folders.

I have tried to set up printing on the other PC and laptop and the Printer is shown in the network map, but cannot and all my efforts have now disrupted the network; viz I cannot access shared files on the Network.

On the Home PC the network is called Network 2.

I want it to be the Homegroup or Work Group but cannot seem to make this happen.

Any suggestions please?

There are still doubts about what the possible and legal upgrade paths are for Windows 7.

Below I tried to compile some information in a way which I hope will be helpful.

Thanks to my friend Kari for his valuable contribution
Any other additions or comments are much welcome

Definitions:
1) Upgrade: to move from Windows XP or Windows Vista to Windows 7
2) Custom or Clean Install: wipes the previous installation and install Windows 7 anew. Does not preserve user files
3) In-Place Upgrade: upgrades from specific versions of Vista to specific versions of Windows 7, preserving user files and programs.
4) Upgrade version: Windows 7 license for those who own a valid license of XP or Vista
5) Full retail version: Windows 7 license to install on any PC, independent of previous installations or ownership. Can be reinstalled on other computers (when activated the previous installation is no longer valid)
6) Full OEM version :Windows 7 license to install on one PC, independent of previous installations. Can only be re-installed on same computer and hardware setup

Upgrade paths
The chart below shows in what situations one can perform an in-place upgrade (e.g. from Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional) without the need to migrate files or programs, and the situations when one needs to do a Custom (Clean) Install and replace the data in the target disc. This is the case for all Windows XP owners or Windows Vista Starter. In this case you will need to migrate your personal files ... Read more

So I've been trying to use system file checker, and encountered a problem where it can't repair a file. I found this page detailing how to manually fix the problem:

Use the System File Checker tool to troubleshoot missing or corrupted system files on Windows Vista or on Windows 7

I was fine until step 2, where it says

"For example, type takeown /f E:\windows\system32\extremely_simplified_example.dll"

The problem is, my CBS.log file says stuff like:

Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"

and I don't know how to translate that into a path to use with the takeown command. I searched for that file using explorer and found a dozen different copies, so I'm not sure which one to replace.

Semi-related questions: Can I just replace them all? I'm planning on using a copy of the file from a similar system that works, is that ok?

Thanks!

A:Help understanding CBS.log file paths

Hello Southbound, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Those instructions there are fine, but just a bit vague. OPTION THREE in the tutorial below can help give you only the SFC results to help make it easier to go through.SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Next, the tutorial below can show you how to extract files from your installation disc to replace any listed files that SFC cannot repair.Extract Files from Windows 7 Installation DVD
Before doing anything, please post back and upload your sfcdetails.txt file to see what all may be wrong, and if it any file that cannot be repaired is worth worrying about.Screenshots and Files - Upload and Post in Seven Forums
To help interrupt what it says to know the path:Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
Unable to repair \SystemRoot\WinSXS\Manifests\\[l:24{12}]"FWPKCLNT.SYS"
The first line says that SFC cannot repair the FWPKCLNT.SYS file.

The second line is the path of the file. "SystemRoot" is a variable "%SystemRoot%" that is actually just a shortcut for "C:\Windows". This leaves you with the file path as:C:\Windows\WinSXS\Manifests\FWPKCLNT.SYS
Doing a search on the C: drive for the listed FWPKCLNT.SYS file would help give you all of it's locations if needed as well.

Hope this helps for now,
Shawn

Hello! I recently upgraded my computer with an SSD for boot and main programs and use my 1TB HDD for general programs and media storage. The thing is I want it to by default install to my D:\ drive.

Now the only solution I see is editing the registry ProgramFilesDir - Which has some serious flaws. It will attempt to launch every program off of the D:\ drive even when it is stored on C:\ and about 9 out of 10 times, it still default installs to C:\.

Firstly, context: My student edition of Autodesk Maya was not working (something about the license being invalid or 'not found', and so when I searched for the error message online, a solution was to go into Environments and Paths, and replace/edit or add one for C:/Autodesk. It didn't work, and I ended up just uninstalling and reinstalling the program manually for it to work.
However, apparently I screwed around really badly in there, because now important things won't open, such as my MalwareBytes program. When I try, a window will popup and say this:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\mbam.exe
The system could not find the environment option that was entered."
So, naturally, I try to find/open the Environments and Paths thing again, right? Nope. I can't open that either:
"Windows cannot find '%windir%\system32\SystemPropertiesAdvanced.exe'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."
Even though I typed 'Environment' in my search bar to find it.
Then recently, Origin tried to install an update on my laptop, but it couldn't find the ProgramFiles, and so there was an error in installation. As a result of this, Chrome is not opening up immediately when I click it. It waits about five-six minutes after I've clicked it. I think it's what caused it, because it didn't do it before yesterday, when I tried to install the update.
So basically: how can I fix this despite knowing little to nothing about computers? How can I go into the Environments with... Read more

A:How do you interpret paths like C:\DOCUME~1\...

Hi.

This kind of path is contraction of the real folder or file names so that they are compatible with the old 8.3 DOS filename format. I don't know why it is necessary, but in (my) theory it works this way:
Long names are stripped of all spaces, even between words.
If the resulting string, without extension, is longer than 8 characters, the 6 leftmost characters are taken and an index appended, to distinguish between similar names.
So "ASDFGHJKLQWE" becomes "ASDFGH~1" while ASDFGHJKLRTZ" becomes "ASDFGH~2"

So the one you submitted translates to something like

C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Local Settings\Temp
Where username is different for each user of the computer.

Hello,

A little background first.

I have a shortwave radio that is of a new type where a lot of the functions such as filters, etc. is done via software that resides on the PC.

The radio is mfg. by the WINRADIO company.
The model of the radio is a G31 DDC

After playing with the radio, it automatically Saves the frequencies that you have listened to, and puts them into Memory to be able to recall them later.
The file that it creates is called "User Memory"..

I seem to have the User Memory File in the right place, I think, but the "path" to get there seems to be different.

I have one path of:
Libraries/ Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

And another path of:
C:/ Users/ Bob/ My Documents/ WINRADIO/ G31 DDC/ User Memory

They both seem to lead to the correct file of User Memory.

a. My main question: Is there really only one file of User Memory, but two different ways or paths to get to it ?

b. What's with Libraries; I've never set that up ? What are they ?

c. Notice that one path has My "Documents", and the other just "Documents".

If anyone could explain this for me, I would be most appreciative.

Much thanks,
Bob

I can't figure out how to edit booloader paths.

I had the triple boot working- 7, vista, WUBI ubuntu. Then I installed Snow Leopard and tried to add it in via easyBCD.....and all hades broke loose.

Anybody know how to fix? And how to actually set OSX to boot from windows, since there's no drive letter?

A:Edit Bootloader Paths

Open an elevated command prompt in Windows 7

IMPORTANT: make a backup of your bcd file first. To do that, type:

Quote:

bcdedit /export C:\SAVEDBCD

For Vista:

Quote:

bcdedit /set {*insert here*} device partition=F:

* insert the Windows vista BCD ID, too small for me to read (take out the *'s)

ok, Vista should be working now, please test it to make sure

For Ubuntu: - optional; this will rename "nst Linux Loader" to "Wubi Ubuntu"

Quote:

bcdedit /set {*insert here*} description "Wubi Ubuntu"

* insert the "nst Linux Loader" BCD ID, too small for me to read (take out the *'s)

It is getting late, so try those, which should get Vista back on its feet, also go to the elevated cmd and type "bcdedit" please post back the results right-click the cmd prompt and select "mark" then highlight every thing, then post the results. Please copy the results, so i will be able to copy and paste

Also, what is the "EFI snow leopard" partition for???

I use WinAso Registry Optimizer; when I run it my computer crashes when it gets to Invalid File Paths, but when I remove the invalid file paths flag, it completes the process just fine. I would like some advice on correcting invalid file paths...thanks.

A:Invalid File Paths

Don't use registry cleaners. If you continue to use them, chances are that crashes will be among the least of your problems. Those things are junk, do only harm, and you should be thankful you were even able to reboot. Performance is not improved by using them, they remove needed entries, and they create their own "errors" so that they can "fix" them, making worse errors in the process.

A:invalid file paths ???

Do yourself a favor, and if a registry cleaner offers to do something you don't understand, decline. It's far easier to clean the system to death than to actually fix something with a registry cleaner.

I've had the asian language pack installed on my laptop for awhile now and I know of a similar issue that involves the Korean won symbol, fortunately that never happened to me and I use my computer to type Korean frequently. I was attempting to get a program to run in Japanese to help out one of my friends, and after a restart; anywhere there's a file path it shows the &#65509; instead of \.

I know there's no difference aside from appearance, but it's really annoying to look at it.

I've uninstalled the program and looked around the Regional and Language options, policy settings, and about anywhere I can think of, maybe I missed it somewhere, but I can't find a way to revert it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

On my desktop-computer i have shared some folders with my home network. Then i changed their paths, as i reorganized myself. Now it seems, when I acces the network, those folders paths dont seem to be updated, as i cant access them.

I can now of course "unshare", rename and share them again, which makes them again accessible through the network, but the old "folder names" still remain. why is that, how can i correct it?

Same problem with some old "synched folders".

A:shared folder and changing their paths

Curious, where do the old 'folder names' remain? Just in the drop down menu under 'Map network drive ...'?

If so those paths are saved in your registry.

Hello everyone! New here with this problem, hope I'm entering it under the right category (if not, sorry)

I have a local and a network folder embeded in a tiddlywiki page in iframes.
They both contain folders, .doc and .xls files with both greek and english names.
I've set up the open office plugin to show the aforementioned files within browser, so the frames work as
a sort of view area (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=94384&page=2 ).

At the same time I need to be able to open the folders / files in their native windows environment.
The above configuration doesn't allow that as .doc and .xls links open in the open office environment by default.

A number of firefox add-ons (Open With 4.0 / https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/11097/,
IE Tab 2 / https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/92382/) provide the functionality to open firefox links in different browsers and/or programs.

I've set up explorer, winword.exe and excel.exe as manual entries in the Open With add-on which allows you to right click on firefox links and select to open them with these applications. Other add-ons allow you to do the same thing with internet explorer or a chosen application.

They all present the following problem:

The plugin works perfectly when opening the folder file:///C:/a with explorer
and the files file:///C:/a/a.doc with winword and file:///C:/a/a.xls with excel.exe.

But I get a path does not exist or is not a directory error when... Read more

I changed the user name from "user001" to "user888". That changed the name on the login/logout screens. But the user folders and paths all stayed with the old name "user001". As a result some things, like the name installed programs will grab and use, are still called "user001".

Is there a way, short of re-installing Windows, to change all the appropriate folders, paths and registry entries to read "user888" and get rid of the old user name completely?

A:Changing the User Folders (and paths)

You may want to create a new account and move the user files over to that new account. Then delete the old account.

I just ran a customized install of Office Ultimate 2007. I open Powerpoint, and tried to access the clipart library to insert a clipart image. It gives me an error saying it can't display the clipart, and tells me I have to run Setup again, and choose "Add & Remove Programs" to install the feature; but it doesn't say WHAT feature. I've done customized installs 100 times, and never had this issue. I've also got the Office12/Clipart folder on another partition from a past install. So, I was going to try and go to the Options/Paths like Office USED to have, but NOO can't go there. So, how the #$&& do I fix this issue?

Where are the Office programs' exe files found? I cannot find them in 2010?
I check the Office program shortcuts and they look like this:

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\microsoft shared\Virtualization Handler\CVH.EXE" "Microsoft Excel 2010 9014006204090000"

Which doesn't work when I insert that in "add" to the programs in Setpoint (Logitech's software for VX Revolution mouse)

Hi there,
I have been looking for a simple way to begin to understand the command line in windows. I'm trying to import python code from a folder, and at the moment I can only get my code to run if I save my folder in the default c:\Users\Jamie\<full path>. My question is in two parts
1. How can I run simple scripts from anywhere else (say, my documents)
2. Can I edit paths somehow such that typing % python <script name> will run my script, from the default C:\Users\Jamie, or otherwise?
Sorry if the questions themselves contain errors in understanding, i haven't used the Windows command before

A:Using PATHS in the command line in Windows 7

so you want to do this in command prompt?

python c:\whatever\subfolder\somescript.py

Where is python.exe located?

You want it to work for your account only I assume (?)

Having moved a bunch of shared printers from one server to another, I need to change the local printer paths on all workstations - is this something that can be done at a command line, and therefore scripted and placed into a batch file/login script?

I rather think it's going to have to be done with something like VBScript or WSH (about which I know nothing!) but if anyone has any ideas, I'd be pleased to hear them.

Thanks.

When I first installed Win 7 I simply went with the default user name of "Owner". I wouldn't mind changing it now but I'm concerned about the effect on my shortcuts and so on.

If I rename it, will Windows go through and automatically update all the shortcuts and program paths and so on? My gut reaction is "Of course it will" but I've learned to be cautious with Windows! Will I end up with a lot of tidying up to do?

A:Will changing username mess up paths?

Only the username will be changed. The c:\users\<username> path does not get changed and this can lead to more confusion.

Better method:

1) Create two new accounts. One in the username you want, and one temporary...you can even call it TEMP if you like.

2) Log in as TEMP. Use Windows Easy Transfer to migrate all files and settings from your old account to the new one you just created.

3) When this is complete, log in as your new user and make sure everything is there and working.

4) Delete your old user and TEMP.

Love 7 so far! But today I needed to access a share (\\servername\share) but when I went to type it, it came up cannot connect. We're on a domain with AD, and noticed in eventvwr that GP not processing:

The processing of Group Policy failed. Windows attempted to read the file \\internal.domain\SysVol\internal.domain\Policies\{5682A7A2-6BAE-4655-8DB6-7CAF8ECC6042}\gpt.ini from a domain controller and was not successful. Group Policy settings may not be applied until this event is resolved. This issue may be transient and could be caused by one or more of the following:
a) Name Resolution/Network Connectivity to the current domain controller.
b) File Replication Service Latency (a file created on another domain controller has not replicated to the current domain controller).
c) The Distributed File System (DFS) client has been disabled.

Also would not map network drives. Anyways, ended up doing a system restore to a known working point in time, and that seemed to work, until I rejoined the computer to domain (since it had lost the trust relationship because of the system restore), but after a few group policies processed, and a couple critical updates were installed, it broke again. So now I unplug from the network at bootup, login, then plug network back in, and it seems to be a workaround for now, but hopefully it's only a temporary one. Anyone have any ideas?

A:Network paths (UNC \\server) broke

I would check DNS and that your clock is set to match your domain controller.

I'm trying to set up Symantec Backup Exec 12 on Windows Server 2003. I want to be able to backup week 1 to X:\, week 2 to Y:\ and week 3 to Z:\ as Backup Exec requires each drive to maintain its own drive letter.

I have 3 Seagate Free Agent hard disks. When I try to assign each one its own drive letter, it won't maintain it. For example if I set drive 1 to X:\, the swap it out for drive 2 and assign that one to Y:\, when I plug in drive 1 it will mount as Y:\ rather than X:\ which I originally assigned it to.

Does anyone know how to get Windows to recognize that these are three separate drives and allow them to maintain their own drive letters?

Thanks.

A:Different removable disks assigning different paths

can you not go into diskmgmt.msc and assign the drive path you require?

I have a program that plays music on VB 2008 Express Edition. It accesses music from my memory stick because I'm going to need to move the program to another computer. However, the memory stick was always listed under the J:\ drive, but now randomly it's listed under the K:/ drive. Is there a way so that I can just get the music "into" the program so that it can just play the music no matter what computer it is on. P.S. I also need to get this program to run on XP, and the file path is E:\, I'm afraid that since mine changed randomly, the XP computer I'm moving it to will also change randomly.

Please Help!

A:File Paths Changing Randomly

You can change the drive letter by going to Administrative Tools in Control Panel and them going into Computer Management, there is a section called Disk Management which will show all connected drives, from there you can change the drive path.

There is an Excel App on our network that gets used by multiple users. In this app there are some VLookups that pull information from other spreadsheets. The problem we are having is that the physical paths in the VLookups are being changed to relative paths. Instead of using L:\Files\somefile.xls it changes to \\server\share\somefile.xls.

When this happens the VLookup stops working, it's odd because both paths are legetimate but only the one with the physical path works. This is happening on several different spreadsheets and the formulas have to continualy remapped.

All users are using Office 97 but the OS are mixed, Win ME, 2000 and 98. Any ideas?

Here are the Vlookups:

Before
=VLOOKUP($C18,'L:\shared files\[EmpDataLog.xls]RATE'!$B$10:$AZ$642,5)

After
=VLOOKUP($C18,'\\server01\shared files\[EmpDataLog.xls]RATE'!$B$10:$AZ$642,5)

Hi, Tal. I suspected, so I confirmed with someone else here at work, that your users have drives mapped differently and they really need to be the same.

Hi friends!

I'm experiencing a very strange bug with a custom library. On the odd occasion when I open an explorer pane and navigate to my library on the left-hand side, two of my included folders - which are both located in 'C:\Program Files\...' will change to a non-existent 'C:\Program Files (x86)\...' version of the same folder. If I click on that folder in the library pane it will tell me the folder doesn't exist.

It happens infrequently but often enough to be annoying. It's not immediately clear what causes it or why it stops. When it happened just now I closed all open explorer panes and opened a new one, and the library displayed the correct 'non x86' folder structure.

Any idea what causes this and how it can be avoided?

Thanks!

Adam
