Q: Need help with my Vista dell e6400

Hello I have a Vista Dell E6400 and I just moved to California. The Ethernet at my house in GA worked fine and then when I tried to connect it to A LAN Ethernet in Florida it says that there is limited or no connectivity. Please help me please.

A: Need help with my Vista dell e6400

Hello Moneymo2013, could you please elaborate some more I would like some more detail? What do you mean when you try to connect to your Ethernet at your house? Do you mean when you try to connect to your router or your cable/DSL mode via the network interface card (NIC)?

Help! After leaping into the world of 64bit computing, I am experiencing daily, frequent, random BSOD's and I am at a complete loss. Hoping someone on this forum can offer some advise.

Here are my system specs: brand new (2 months) Dell Latitude E6400 w/ Vista Business x64, SP1; w/8G RAM; CPU t9400 2.53 ghz; nvidia graphics card. Also dell port replicator, external lcd monitor, and dell bluetooth keyboard and mouse.

I have been experiencing a variety of BSODs, and it would seem mostly due to sleep or hibernate events, but this could be my imagination. My system is setup to save the BSOD id's and can supply ID's and mini dumps on request.

BSOD's id's fe, 1e, d1, 9f appear to be the most frequent. Also have occational "appcrash" naming STacSV64.exe (idt audio) but also for other applications such as IE.

Another annoyance is with BT mouse and/or keyboard, which looses connection at what appears to be at random times.

Here is what I have tried (aside from reading all the posts on any forum I can find)

Have installed all available drivers from dell's website.
Upgraded bios from A09 to A11.
Disabled the powersaving mode so LT does not hibernate or go to sleep - just simple screen saver followed by poweroff on monitor.
Ran the memtest tool, memory appears to have a clean bill of health.

Currently, I have removed the laptop from the docking station and am running standalone (just power and bt mouse) to see what happens.

Any additional suggestions would... Read more

I installed Windows 7 64-bit on my Latitude E6400. I cannot seem to find any way to install Dell Control Point. I got the Driver Pack to install. I found one download of Security Manager that worked, but I would like the Power Manager one.

I've looked on this forum a few times and any links I click on just redirect me to the Drivers and Downloads page. I get errors saying that my service pack is not supported.....I'm on Windows 7 Service Pack 1. I also got some 32-bit errors, but that's my fault for downloading the 32-bit version.

Does anybody have a link to the full Dell Control Point package (Power Manager, Connection Manager, Security Manager) that will work on 64-bit Windows 7?

Thanks
-Ryan

I'm looking into buying an affordable small travel notebook/laptop. My budget is fairly low, only consisting of a few hundred Dollars.
I have found this specification list from a local used store:
www.secondhand.nz/.../
I haven't found any new condition sellers so far. Also, a few questions I had were:
- Is this notebook capable of running Windows 10?
- As I'm a designer, can this notebook run Photoshop cloud edition?
- Is shipping notebooks overseas possible and safe?
it is really hard for me to determine what's wise or not. Because I'm inexperienced in the hardware field.

A:DELL Latitude E6400

DANIELCUBAN,
This is a nice reliable computer. Unfortunately, there are no Windows 10 drivers available for download. That does not mean it may not run it. It is that Dell did not verify this computer to run Windows 10 and did not create any drivers.
Looking at the system requirements to run Photoshop Cloud software; the computer meets the requirements.
As far as shipping notebooks overseas it should be fine as long as it is packaged well toh avoid being damaged.
Dell has some reasonable priced laptops that may meet your budget located on our Dell Outlet website below., Even with Windows 10.

Did an update in from Windows 7 64 bit where it worked fine. Updated to Win10 and noticed that the touchpad driver doesnt work and the brightness wont work properly. I have tried everything to fix them and nothing! Dell doesnt officially support Win10 on this laptop. It's pretty frustrating! Thanks!

A:Can't get Windows 10 to work on Dell E6400

Officially, Dell only supports EXX30 series and newer. But a lot of times, W7 drivers do work in W10.
I would go to Dell's website and pull the touchpad driver for W7 and see if it works.

I'm planning on getting a new dell latitude E6400 for college next year and in the customizable options for RAM one can choose 4.0GB DDR3-1333MHzSDRAM, 2 DIMMS or 4.0GB DDR3-1066MHz SDRAM, 2 DIMMS for the same price. I assumed the RAM with 1333MHz would be faster, but the Dell support tech support people (who did not really seem to know what they were talking about) kept saying they couldn't find any information about the latitude E6400 having a 4.0GB DDR3-1333MHz RAM. So, which RAM do you guys think I should choose?

P.S. Should I go for 64 bit OS or 32 bit? And what exactly would be the difference?

Thanks so much!

A:RAM dilemma with Dell Latitude E6400

Without know the CPU, best guess is it doesn't matter.

Looking here: http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/dell-latitude-e6400-laptop/4505-3121_7-33200149.html
the laptop has a P8700 CPU, which according to Intel has a 1066 BUS (http://ark.intel.com/Product.aspx?spec=SLGFE)
Most likely the board they are using only supports this bus, so buying the higher will just downclock to the 1066.

I'd go for the x64 OS.

I do not like using the Dell Touchpad as the heat from my hand (or so I think) causes the cursor to jump around. I tried to disable the touchpad through the file at c:\Program Files\DellTpad\DellTPad.exe but it only works when I clear all the checks, close the program, re-open, check what I want, then apply. Once I restart, the touch pad is enabled again. I read though the old posts - I could not find any help. BTW - there is no icon for this in the tray although the box is checked in the program. I have to go to the program .exe file every time. Thanks....

This is the only laptop I could get with a modem for dialup, Windows 7 installed ok, registered ok. It came with disk. It is refurbished but looks like it was never used.
I am used to XP so I have a lot of questions, entered Internet connections but it only connects and does not go anywhere.
Do I need Java? Comodo says, it cannot be installed, Malwarebytes cannot update. Firefox installed ok without any add-ons.
Can I install WOT on W7 ?
Can I install Malware Search?
Can I install NoSquint? Dr.Web?

I have to get to the point where I can go onto the web to get Superantyspyware and update Malwarebytes (had it from a USB, older version).
I managed to fix my old laptop here to be able to ask questions but I need the newer one, this 10+ year old gets too hot fast.
Any help is very much appreciated.
Please do not send me to youtube, a 2 minutes clip takes 2 hours to get through the phone.

The switch on the right above the headphones has a radio tower on the left end of the slider. When the slider is pushed to the right, there is red/orange visible. So to connect to a router, do I slide the "wireless switch" to the right or to the left? Sorry, but I cannot tell which is "on."

Also the next button to the right of that wireless switch is called the Wi-Fi Catcher Network Locator. To a non-geek, can you tell me what that is for?

A:wireless switch on Dell E6400

Hi ejlgcpa take a look at this

Reading

How to Enable Wi-Fi on the Dell Latitude E6400 | eHow.com

From the manual

   Note
WHAT IS THE DELL WIFI CATCHER
DellTM Wi-Fi CatcherTM Network Locator
The wireless switch on your Dell computer uses the Dell Wi-Fi CatcherTM Network Locator to scan specifically for WiFi wireless local area networks (LAN) in your
vicinity.
NOTE: For more information about the wireless switch, see wireless switch.
To scan for WiFi wireless LAN, slide and hold the switch in the "momentary" position for a few seconds. The Wi-Fi Catcher Network Locator functions regardless of whether your computer is turned on or off, in hibernate mode, or in standby mode, as long as the switch is configured through QuickSet or the BIOS (system setup program) to control WiFi network connections.
Because the Wi-Fi Catcher Network Locator is disabled and not configured for use when your computer is shipped to you, you must first use Dell QuickSet to enable and configure the switch to control WiFi network connections.
For more information on the Wi-Fi Catcher Network Locator and to enable the feature through QuickSet, see the Dell QuickSet Help. To access the Help file, right-click the icon in the taskbar.

I have tried without success to resolve a BSOD problem on my DELL laptop that started around October 20th ? see attached JPG. It can happen after the computer has been on for 6 or 7 hours or within a few minutes of use (from cold)

The computer was purchased in October 2008 but not used till February this year.

The most recent hardware addition was the Dell Wireless 5530 HSPA 3G modem. This was in June but has taken a few weeks to get working.

I have attached a short report and full HTML reports from HWiNFO

I have run Memtest86+ over night with the original 2x 2GB RAM sticks but no problems were reported. Even so I just installed 2x 2GB Kingston (value range) sticks. Again Memtest did not report any problems.

I experience the BSOD with either my usual or my backup HD ( created using Acronis). Sadly my backup was generated after the first BSOD. There seems to be no difference which drive I use.

I have a ?C? partition as NFS for all progs, and ?D, E and F? partitions as FAT32 with my data.

I have been checking previous posts and so am also attaching a TSF_XP_Support zip. I have several full memory dumps but even zipped are over 500Mb which would be difficult to attach.

The minisumps pointed to a problem with the Acronis drivers so I removed this programme and deleted the driver in question but the problem persisted. My feeling is the problem is associated with Eudora 7 or the HSPA modem but I have no evidence.

Any pointers ... Read more

Yes hello. I just created an account here because I require some help. I've been having high CPU Usage lately. Here are my system specs.
Dell Latitude E6400 With an Intel Core 2 DUO and it has 2.66GHz processor, with 4GB of Ram, a 250GB HD, it has Intel Family on board Graphics, My programs installed are: iTunes, Adobe Reader, Adobe Flash Player, Java, Power ISO, WinRAR, Team Viewer, Google Chrome, cCleaner, Avast, Microsoft Office 2010 Professional Plus, & my HP Deskjet 3511 Printer Software. But I could only have just 1 IE window open watching a movie on Netflix and I notice that the words coming from a person in the movie do not match up with what I'm hearing. Like what I'm hearing is before what their lips are saying. And it's not my internet connection because I've tried watching the same movie on another laptop and I don't have that problem. And when opening my eBay page, it's very slow to load, same as Gmail too. And did I mention the very high CPU Usage during all of this? With only 1 application open which is IE, the CPU Usage can go anywhere from 50% to 100% in just a few minutes and on occasions even a few seconds! I've tried many different things. From stopping and disabling unneeded services in services.msc to setting the affinity in certain processes to using only 1 core and not 2 cores, to running both Avast and Microsoft Security Essentials with no virus found on both. I even ran it in safe mode still high CPU Usage! Even ran a boot scan with... Read more

Hi Joban,

Welcome to Seven forums.

Kindly check the system under safe mode networking:

Safe Mode

Let us know if it works correctly there. Also, let me know the model number of wireless card installed on the system.

Check this article for further troubleshooting:

Note: Steps are for Vista but it would be similar for Windows 7 as well.

Keep us posted with the results so we can advise you further.

Attached is the ZIP file requested, but I was unable to create a "perfmon /report" file. I receive an error of "Error: An error occured while attempting to generate the report. I tried to manually create this report based on some information I found instructing me to create a report using a User Defined Data Set inside of the Performance Monitor tool, but I'm unable to create a User Defined Data Set (for some unknown reason......I do not have an active "next" or "finish" button within the 'Create new data collector set' wizard). I have a Dell Latitude E6400 with Windows 7 64 bit. I received the BSOD this morning with a "System_Service_Exception" error, and an indication that the error is tied to the NWIFI.SYS file.

A:Win 7 64 bit BSOD - nwifi.sys - Dell Latitude E6400

Disregard my post. I have resolved the issue.

It was tied to the version of Symmantec Endpoint Protection at my company. I upgraded (uninstalled old and did a clean install of the new version) my version of SEP and fixed the problem.

More context around my activities in troubleshooting the issue on my Dell Latitude E6400 Windows 7 64 bit machine:

I first thought it was a hardware or driver issue tied to the wireless driver, and tried the following two things:
1) Updated my wireless driver to the latest available from Dell (I was at least one release behind)
2) Swapped my hard drive into a different E6400.
Both failed, and the issue remained.

I tried to use the ?repair? function in the Windows ?F8? boot screen of available diagnostic options. Fail.

I tried to restore my machine to an earlier restore point several different times with the two available restore points. Fail.

Around this point I went home for the day (after a final attempt to do a system restore). When I got home (and assumed my machine was still useless) I fired up my machine in ?normal? mode (I had been using ?Safe Mode With Networking? during my troubleshooting), and everything worked. Puzzling. I assumed my last ?system restore? attempt had been successful in resolving the issue. I used my laptop last night without issue.

I got into work this morning, docked my machine, logged on, launched a couple of apps, then?.BSOD! DAMMIT!

I then figured that the issue was tied to something tha... Read more

I have a situation very much similar to the one described in this post below.

My machine is Dell E6400 in its lowest configuration and default video card, et cetera.

I got a Dell 2312HM monitor that's capable of 1080 and the highest I see available is 1600 x something with 1920x1080 not even shown. 1600x BTW looks awful. It runs by default the "recommended" 1366x768.

I deactivated the notebook screen, shut down the lid making the 2312HM the only screen to no avail.
I downloaded the driver for the 2312HM also to no avail. What else can I try?

I am running this via VGA port, could this be the problem, should I get the Display Port cable? There is no HDMI in the laptop computer, just DVI/VGA and DP. I was under the impression that VGA can display 1080.
I was also under the impression the stock video card can run 1080p.

Screen resolution will not display 1920x1080

Quote:
Problem- I have Sony Vizio, display name of E320VP, 1920x1080. When I right click and go to screen resolution it will not let me go pass 1366X768. I have tried using amd vision and clicking on use EDI and it helps and shows 1920x1080. However under screen resolution when I right click on my desktop it still will not let me change and only shows 1366X768.

Also while running games, 1920x1080 is not an option for me to select under screen resolution.

How can I fix and or solve this problem. Thanks in advance.

I have a Latitude E6400 that I recently clean installed WIN7 ultimate on. Everything was working great and continues to work great undocked. When in the docking station (), however I tend do have problems. I thought initially it was just related to the NIC card as it seemed to only start misbehaving under a lot of network activity and disabling the NIC and running only on wireless seemed to fix it, but in ALL cases I have to do a cold boot. Simply restarting it would not help and when I finally would get logged back in after a simple restart, the CPU was already pegged. Today, however it seems that even with the NIC disabled that it also exhibits the behavior although today I was using an external USB drive connected to the docking station. i have since removed that as well to see if I can stabilize. I've downloaded and installed every latest driver/bios/firmware I could find. Nothing has worked...

What occurs is over time, and sometimes that's not long, my CPU quickly pegs at 100% and stays. There are no particular processes pegging it either. I can end process on many in my list with no change. Over the last week I've only been in the office a couple of days using the docking station and on each occasion I have problems at least 2 - 3 times within the day. The rest of the week I've been undocked and had no problems and I run this thing all day long.

I have no messages in any logs that I've found indicating any type of problem. Just extreme frustration. ... Read more

A:Dell Latitude E6400 Windows 7 docking problems?

Did you ever find a resolution to this problem? If you did, I hope it wasn't "rolling back to XP" since that is not really an option I would like to explore either. I noticed this problem for me started about 3 weeks ago and it only happens when I am docked as well. I have tried other docking stations, but that didn't resolve my problem either. Just wondering if you have been able to find a "fix".

Hi,
I am facing issues on my Dell Latitude E6400 laptop. Everyday it crashes with blue screen 4-5 times a day. Common symptoms are, when I move from wired network to wireless (wireless does not work and system hangs and eventually crashes), or when it is in a sleep mode. Sometimes, without switching to wireless also hangs and crashes. The blue screen says something like DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE and code 9f etc. I updated the Ethernet and wireless drivers too, but it didn't help.

Specs
It has Windows 7
- x64
- OEM version of windows 7 Ultimate is installed from Dell
- Age of system (hardware) is ~2 years. I got it now from my office IT.
I am attaching the zip file containing perfmon html report and files from Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2.

Will appreciate if you can help, what is going on and what needs to be uninstalled or upgraded.

Thanks
Amit

Hello,

I recently purchased a used Dell Latitude E6400 laptop from a local computer shop. The computer is running windows 7 professional. I would like to create a system backup disk before I do anything on it. I want to be able to used this disk to re-image the laptop back to the original windows 7 system in case there is ever a need.

I do not have a product key for windows 7. i am not sure if this is an issue or not.

one of the people that work at the store told me about a product ACRONIS and that i could use the trial version to create the backup.

there is also the system backup program that comes with windows 7.

i am not sure what other information that you need for this request. if there is something that I missed, pleas let me know and I will try to gt if I can

I've had a Dell Latitude D630 for over 6 years. I bought a used Dell Latitude E6400 off eBay, but when I put the hard drive from my D630 in it, it would not boot into Windows. It would run until the colored balls started to rotate it would flash a quick blue screen of death and pop into the Window startup repair. The startup repair ran for a while but said it could be repaired, I thought it was fix, but it reboot and did the same thing again. Why. I'd like to use my old hard drive if possible. I had the startup repair pop up every once in a while on the D630, but it never was able to fix it and I didn't try a restore. Any help would be appreciated.

Dell E6400 Specs:Intel Centrino 2 Duo 2.5Ghz

A:Windows Will Not Start After Moving Hard Drive from Dell D630 to E6400

It would help to list the specs of the two units for comparison.

Usually this is a driver problem. Try entering into Safe Mode via F8 as Windows begins to boot. If it works, disable any driver that doesn't pertain to the new machine. Especially critical is the video driver.

You can also try the VGA option at F8.

If not, access the bios of the two machines, and make sure the new machine is set to the same SATA setting - ACHI or IDE - as the original machine.

Hi there, trying to connect using bluetooth on my dell e6400 but it isn't working. Bluetooth indicator led is on and when i scan for devices with Bluetooth, search results on windows 7 don't show any device. Although in my mobile phone Bluetooth search shows "dell 370 Bluetooth minicard" and when i tap to connect it says "unable to pair. incorrect pin or password". I have tried connecting to other Bluetooth devices but same results. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:DELL Latitude E6400 bluetooth not showing any device in search results on windows 7

Under Settings->Connected Devices have you tried the "Add a device"? option to see if it shows there?  I had a similar issue with a Bluetooth mouse that wouldn't pair.  I had to delete it from the Bluetooth device list and then add it with the Add a Device option.

Hi,
I have a Dell Latitude E6400 on which the LED Screen Display / Video shows steady vertical lines in the right half of the display (partial display on the left side is good, see picture). I have already tested the external VGA port - it displays correctly on an external LCD monitor. The vertical lines are constant and of the same brightness, regardless of the position of the laptop lid. Could this be a problem with the inverter or the LCD display ribbon cable? Or something else? Thanks in advance for any feedback.

P. S. Please note that the golden glow on the top left side of the screen is just a reflection of an ambient light.

A:Dell Latitude E6400 LCD / LED Video Screen Has Partial Display Vertical Lines

It's not the inverter (assuming the display has one);  that simply controls the backlight.  It may or may not be the cable - likely it is not.  It looks like a damaged display panel.

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

Can people with this cpu please tell my what temperatures your getting using this

http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?t=103638

I get 49 on core 1 and 50 on core 2, and thats idleing! from what ive read its too hot?

Edit:In my bios its only around 39-42 lol

A:E6400 temperature

That's roughly what I get too on my E6400. When I was using AI Gear, it was even higher (over 50C) because the stupid thing was slowing down the CPU fan. The Intel spec sheet says that the highest temperature for E6400 is 61.4C, but even then it's not going to fry because it will just shut itself down. As long as it stays below 60, I think it's OK.

Update: After reading your post, I decided to see what would happen if I played around with my case fans. Originally I had only 1 case fan blowing the air out, but then I added a second fan blowing the air in. To my surprise, this dramatically lowered the temperature inside the case. Now the motherboard is reporting 27C (before it was 36~40C) and the CPU is at 41C (before it was 46~50C) when idle. You might also want to read this article from Intel:

A:E6300 vs E6400

If you can afford to get the 6400, then I'd say get it, if not, then the 6300 is good too. If you will be overclocking and want to see what other people are getting for overclocks, here's an interesting link.
http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1075792

(If you're running sli on an intel nforce based board though don't expect high overclocks.)

Personally, I prefer one fast card to to mid range sli'ed cards, since not all games utilize sli, and it's a more complex/expensive setup to do a sli.

In an attempt to replace a Windows XP computer with a Windows 10 computer, I was hoping I could use a Dell E6400 we had. I installed the software for the sign on the computer but it doesn't recognize that there is a modem.

A:E6400 Modem Port

The system would not have shipped with a modem unless a special order had been placed -- you may have to remove the base cover to check and see whether there is in fact a modem installed.  It sounds like there isn't, in which case you'll need to purchase one.

Thanks to everyone who helped me in my previous post. After reviewing the comments I have decided to go with an Intel Core Duo 2 E6400 chip.

Since I'm really out of touch with computer parts these days, I was wondering if perhaps anybody had a recommended motherboard to go along with this chipset?

Alright, my computer is a custom built PC from newegg, I will try to give my basic configuration and a synopsis of my problems:

Gigabyte DS3 mo/bo
4x 1gb GSkill pc6400
EVGA 8800GTS 320mb vid card
Intel e6400 cpu/ Zalman 9700 heatskink

-Currently, when I turn my pc on everything (fans, lights) powers up, but there is no video signal.
-I tried using a different monitor, no luck. I tried plugging my laptop into my monitor, works fine.
-I tried removing every peripheral except ram, cpu, fan, and video card. No luck.
-I tried using only 1 stick of RAM (all 4 of them independently) and no luck.
-I tried bringing my pc to a friends house and tried my video card in his system, it works fine on his mo/bo. I tried his video card in my system, but still no signal (it worked when we put it back in his as well)
-I tried powering my friends pc up with my powersupply, worked fine.
-I tried pulling the CPU battery out and leaving it out over night, then putting it back in. No luck.

So now I'm trying to limit my options of what could possibly be going wrong. It seems like either the CPU or mo/bo is the problem from what I've found so far. Two other things that seem strange: The reset button does not work when powered up (it used to before I had this video problem), and the CPU fan takes about 4 seconds to kick in (it used to start up before anything else). I am really hoping I don't have to RMA my entire board, but any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated before... Read more

A:latitude e6400 new graphic card?

The only way to upgrade the video is to replace the entire system board.  There is no video card in any of these systems - the chip is part of the mainboard, whether Intel or nVidia.
This will void any warranty you have on the system.  The part you'd need is this one

Hello, I have this 4-year old laptop. I bought a Kingston 2GB DDR2 800mhz CL6 PC2-6400 module to install into the second slot (the first one has the stock 2GB RAM module). BIOS didn't recognize it, so I tried to plug the original RAM module from the first slot (A) into the second (B) and the laptop didn't even power on. Then I tried to install the Kingston into the first slot (A) and the laptop did power on and run OK. So it is clear that the second RAM slot is not working properly.
Does it mean that I need to replace the motherboard in order to fix it? Is there any other way this could be fixed (maybe the slot isn't bad, it just needs some setup, maybe cleaning, I don't know)?
Thanks in advance.
Filip

A:Second RAM slot not working (Latitude E6400)

If neither module works in that slot, it's a bad memory socket - the mainboard may be repairable but the soldering required will put the price near or over what a replacement board will cost.

Hello. I just upgraded my (i prety much fixed up a new rig) gaming machine and have enjoyed it very much so far. I've been dealing with various issues (the latests of which happened to be a faulty graphics card) and now my newest issue seems to be with my processor.

Crysis crashes on me and after much thought I finally downloaded speedfan and checked out my CPU temp. I"m not exactly sure how to read the info but it says that core0 and core1 are idling at ~72C. In games it goes up to around 80C!! crysis regularly crashes and FPS frequently drop particullary during noised induced by object interation.

Stock the CPU runs at 2.13Ghz so OC'ing to 2.67 shouldn't be that bad should it? also i've got a third party heatsink and fan on it so it definately should be that high right?

If i'm right then what can i do to resolve this issue? does the thermal compound make that much difference? i clumsily installed the heatsink and fan so many the compound got unevenly spread? If need be... i'll get a new processor and use this on another mobo i've got laying around, but it doesn't seem right that my CPU is registerying those kinds of temperatures. Please help!

A:Core 2 Duo E6400 OC'ed to 2.67ghz idling at 73C??

72c is really high for idle. It would concern me. Your crashing is probably due to heat. First make sure you have good airflow (cable management helps here) Also the direction the fan is blowing through the cooler should be faced toward the rear of the case, with hopefully a case fan exhausting air. Make sure the fins are clean of debris, If everything looks OK, then I would suggest re seating my cooler with a VERY EVENLY APPLIED THIN LAYER of Artic silver 5 thermal grease. And yes the thermal compound makes a big difference. As well as carefully seating your heatsink. If you can tell the thermal compound got unevenly spread I would say you applied to much of it. Fabe

Hi

Audio is only working through headphones not Laptop speakers

This seems to have happened after an update in the last couple of days
Any help much appreciated!

A:Latitude E6400 Audio problem

If you have the IDT audio driver installed for your model, you can test by switching between it and the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "IDT High Definition Audio Codec".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the IDT driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]
If the speakers do not work with either driver then it is not a driver issue but could be failed hardware.
If the speakers work with only one of the drivers, then the other driver is at fault.
If you need more help please say which operating system is on the laptop.

Hello everybody.

Thanks in advance for taking a look at my thread appreciate it. I bought a custom built motherboard from a reputable website back in October of 2006. Back then I used the program Core Temp to monitor my temps just for kicks in case I wanted to over clock. I ended up not doing so, but I have a log of my temps back then and I'd have an idle temp of anywhere form 42-45 C and under load it was at 54 C.

So current day, I ran it just for kicks because I'm thinking of purchasing a new direct x 10 card and possibly over clock my CPU. I pull up core temp and at idle it was floating around 54-55. Just started the comp and now it currently sits at 62-63C!!! I'm totally baffled. I went into bios, made sure the heatsink fan was running at 2100 rpms, and bios said I was at 71 C!

I understand there are so many variables, however, it's a cool 72 in my room, and the case temp only reads 85 which seems perfectly normal. I recall it being close to that temp when I had the 44 C idle. I'm going to check to see if all my fans are still running, but I honestly cannot imagine a case fan or two changing the core temp. I have an extremely well ventilated case, with 6 fans and a giant 120MM to boot.

Anyone have any ideas? Any basic steps I should follow? IM going to try and default my bios. Maybe someone can shoot me the stock voltage and mhz for my cpu? Core temp shows 2344 mhz (299 x 8.0) for my Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 (Allendale) Is there a preference ... Read more

Hi, I have a Dell Latitude E6400 (BIOS A27) and Vertex 2 120Gb (Firmware 1.27)I've gone through the following process 2 times with 2 different drives:
Win7 x32 install, Win7 updates, couple of reboots all works fine. Then I installed programs copied data and PST files to the SSD. All works fine.BUT then after SHUTDOWN and then booting the system again, it returns to a point in the past! (all the programs and Data is gone!)In OCZ support forums, several users are reporting the same (http://www.ocztechnologyforum.com/forum/showthread.php?81537-Win7-x64-REBOOT-works-fine-SHUTDOWN-corrupts-boot-sector)
It looks a BIOS problem, any thoughts?
Thanks!

I have a used Dell E6400 I bought 1 year ago.  When I pack it up to take it to the library….I get there, power to the log in screen and the display is really, really dim.  I can just barely see it.  On many occasions I closed the lid and immediately reopened it sure enough it’s back to full bright.
Failure of the lid sensor? I set the ALS to off in BIOS and changed the windows power settings to “do nothing” when the lid is shut.  Also in the advanced settings (Power Options) I made sure the “Enable adaptive brightness” is off and the dimmed display brightness is 100%.  It still did it.
As long as I closed and re-opened the lid it came back on.  But for the past two days the screen would not come back on doing this.  I happen to close, open the lid then pull the power cord to go on AC power and it came right on!
I saw on a post it might be the inverter.  But wouldn’t that just fail outright?  What would opening and closing the lid have to do with that?
Any other ideas what’s wrong?  I may just replace the inverter if I can find one reasonably priced.
Thanks.

Hi, I'm having a problem with my Dell Latitude E6400. When I'm not using it for a while the screen goes black (like into a sleeping mode) like all computers and laptops do. But if it stays black for a little while, and when I go to get back on it and move the mouse around or press the keys the screen won't turn back on but the computer is running because the light on the keyboard are lit up and I can hear the fan running. The only way I can get the screen back on is if I shut it down by pressing the power button on my keyboard and turning it back on.

Can anyone please tell me what to do or what is wrong with it. That would be much appreciated. Thank you

running a Windows Vista network. no problems with 3 wirless computers running Windows XP. and no problems printing remotely using the desktop running Vista. new Dell laptop is running Vista and trying to add a printer, it doesn't see any of the printers. At first it didn't show the wired desktop on the laptop under the network. On the wired desktop under network, It showed the laptop as a music sign and not a computer icon. We deleted the workgroup name and retyped it and changed it to a private computer. have disabled both firewalls. The laptop is running Trend Internet Securioty. It then found the wired desktop on the laptop. But it still doesn't see any of the printers that are connected to the wired desktop.Tried to find the printers by typing in \\192.168.100 under the run command. It said it couldn't recognize the wired DNS address 192.168.100. That is the ipconfig address from cmd and then ipconfig from the wired Dell laptop.

What do we need to do to have the laptop see the printers?

We got a new Dell machine with the Vista preinstalled. Employee wanted Ubuntu (how do ya blame him?) so he resized partitions and installed Ubuntu, but now Vista won't boot.

What can we do to get Vista to be happy again?

This howto:
http://www.pro-networks.org/forum/about78184.html#dualboot
says:
"DO NOT resize the Vista partition during the installation of the Linux distribution! Due to the change in NTFS versions, no Linux partitioning program, nor standard Windows partitioning programs, can properly alter the partition that Vista is installed to."
But we're too late for that...

Hey all,

I am trying to play BF3 on my laptop (Dell Latitude E6400 that I got last year from my college) but my graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements for the game. I have been looking online and I found a pretty solid graphics card that will allow BF3 to run but the only issue is concerning whether or not the graphics card and my laptop are compatible. The graphics card is a Galaxy GeForce GTX 550 Ti 1GB PCI Express 2.0. I found it online at BestBuy.com (I can't post the link because this is my first posting on the forum) for $161.99

I used software called Everest to get some info about my laptop. My current graphics card is a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M. The bus type is PCI Express 2x16 @1. CPU Type is Mobile DualCore Intel Core 2 Duo P8700, 2533 MHz (9.5 x 267).

Is there anything else that would be good to know to tell whether or not this graphics card will work? Thanks in advance for all the help.

-RG

A:Will a Galaxy GeForce GTX 550 Ti PCI Express graphics card work on a Latitude e6400?

If the laptop has a removable graphics card, you might be able to upgrade it. Don't confuse desktop graphics cards with laptop video graphics. The video devices are very different, and most laptops do not have video cards, they have integrated video chips on the motherboard...

 Hi,

Just rebuilt a Latitude E6400 with Windows 7 64 bit.
Device manager is showing under Other Devices, a driver missing for the PCI Simple Communications Controller.
Can't figure out what driver this is referring to, has anyone got any ideas and can they point me to the appropriate driver ?

Thanks,

A:Latitude E6400 - PCI Simple Communications Controller - Missing driver in Device Manager

Since you are looking for a hardware driver for a Dell laptop, the most logical place to go is to the Dell website and download the drivers:

http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/driverslist.aspx?os=W764&catid=-1&dateid=-1&impid=-1&osl=EN&typeid=-1&formatid=-1&servicetag=&SystemID=LAT_E6400&hidos=WLH&hidlang=en&TabIndex=&scanSupported=False&scanConsent=False
You will find the drivers for the PCI Simple Communications Controller undert the Communications tab!
Dell also has forums for their hardware:
http://en.community.dell.com/ which is the proper place to go for support of Dell hardware. Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. The Dell DVD probably overwrote your VAIO recovery partition. You can try to invoke it - usually with F10 key during boot-up. If not you will need replacement recovery DVDs from Sony. HP charges about USD $25.

I've seen this problem on this forum but can't find anything that I haven't tried yet. Here’s my problem; I've spent the last 3 weeks talking with Dell to resolve the issue. They have taken remote access, replaced my mother board and Ethernet cable + I have made numerous changes with Dell guidance and nothing has worked. I have also talked to my service provider who replaced my router and still nothing.

I am now at the point where i still have the DNS look up issue and neither Dell or my service provider are accepting responsibility for the fault..........
My only work around is to unplug my Ethernet cable and plug back in. This seems to interrupt a signal and get me on line.
I would really appreciate your help.

Hello Tech members
I'm getting a new Dell laptop computer, it'll have Vista home premium installed as standard when it arrives.

I've also got my existing 'full version' WinXP professional, which i'd also like to use on the new laptop also, so......

...whats the best and easiest way to have it dual boot, or, is there software out there which can create the nescessary patition, help to install my XPpro, and then set the computer up to dual boot all automatically.

...or..do i have to do it the long-winded way.i.e split the hardrive (360gig) into two partitions ('C at 240gig and 'E' at 120gig),install XPpro on 'E', and set up a boot menu like in the days when i upgarded a Win 98 computer to Win2000pro.

Whats the easiest?, if anyone knows of a suitable software solution to do the job, it would really help.

kind regards

Hi, Simono here,

A friend has allowed me to take there PC home with me because they can not start-it anymore.
This is what I'm seeing. After hooking everything up, I turned it on. The machine powers-up, all fans running, and sits there. There is no sounds of cycling, or of any normal sounds you usually hear from a start-up. I've worked on this same computer about 6 months ago so I remember what it does.
I restarted is several times to try and catch the screen display for booting in safe mode but, there's not even a flicker on the screen... it remains solid black.
Sense the OS is Vista, I put in my recovery disk that came with my computer, hoping this would trigger a response. I tried restarting the pc several time with the disk in but the screen remains black... again, not even a flicker.

Is there a way to reset the system besides unplugging it, or something else I can try?

Thanks,

Simono

Thanks for your help.

A:Dell Vista

Hi Tweak2 and Welcome to TSF,

Do you see the "Press any key to boot from CD/DVD..." message during startup or not?
If it's shown but not loaded properly, make sure the disc is fine by trying it in another machine.

If you don't see that message you need to access BIOS to change the Boot Priority, to set the machine to boot from CD/DVD first.

To do so, press "DEL" during startup until you get into BIOS. Look for "Boot priority" / "Boot order" settings, and set CD/DVD as 1st boot.

Next as I recall hp printers from that era use either LPT1 or usb. Have you tried connecting via a printer cable?

This has happened with about 3 different copies of windows XP I own. Please give me some information to fix this issue.

I'm trying to solve a problem with my printer and new computer. Yes, I have spent two days with tech-help. No results. I have been able to download and install the software patch I found on the Dell sight. I can not boot up when the printer is plugged in. When I plug it in after booting, the machine does not recognize it as a printer. I does find the driver for the 'unknown device'. Shall I just return my computer? I am about to that stage.

Ok this will be a long post, here it goes:

I had some beast malware on my laptop (a Dell Studio XPS M 1640) so I went ahead and re-installed the OS. However, I messed it up.

So I instert the Dell Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit SP 1 disk and the dell symbol comes up and says loading so I press F 12 and the boot menu comes up and I select right from CD/DVD. Then it says press any key to enter so I do. I believe I got it right up till now.

I then Formated both of the drives (C and D) when the two options came up. I proceeded to click on the one I thought was right and clicked next. So it does its stuff and I enter my password etc. I notice however when I get to the desktop my D drive has 450 GB and my C has only 15 GB. So I re-try installing it and pick the other option (I didnt format it this time). This worked out a little better, the C had 450 GB and the D had the right amount, 15 GB or something. I noticed that both said Local Disk C however and there was no recovery. So I am worried but proceed to try and install the Dell Drives and whatnot but am perplexed because I can't figure out which to install and if I was doing it correctly. THEN, I restart the comp and I low and behold there are TWO choices, both saying Windows Vista. One was the OS with the D drive of 450 GB and the other was the more normal one.

So, I go ahead and try to reinstall it again and Format the two drives but being and idiot I picked the D drive as my main slot again so it has 450GB!!. At t... Read more

Hello all, I just acronis'ed (partition resized) Vista x64 from the whole hard drive 451 to 150gb and to make space for windows 7 installation on the free 300gb. During the resize the laptop went to sleep so I had to reboot --- but after rebooting, I could not create a partition because it reported as no space available. Somehow ? I got out of that and managed to resize again, this time successfully (so I thought) to 150gb. Installed Win7 successfully on the 300gb partition but now unable to boot back to Vista although the bootup gives both options win7 and vista. Ran EBCD and set up windows 7 boot with vista as second choice. Still no luck - Vista will not come up - even in safe mode - it just sits there with a black screen and the arrow cursor.

Tried the original install disk and did repair several times from the CD on vista partition but still did not start - I then went to command and ran bootrec.exe /fixmbr etc... it said successful but still no luck in vista boot. The 150gb partition seems to be intact there are program files and program files (x86) folders with all the installed stuff on it. Anyway I moved all what could be moved into the win7 partition in preparation for the worst!! (a fresh vista re-install). Is this my only solution now ??

In the last 2 weeks I have installed over 10 Dell laptops with Vista Home basic/Home premium. I have encountered these 2 specific problems on most of them!.

1 - They all had a 60 day trial of Office 2007. Having entered the License Key and registered the product everytime I open an Office application from the Start Menu it trys to reinstall again. If I use the Dell Dock it does not happen.

2 - On most occasions when trying to open the control panel it does not respond forcing Windows Explorer to restart.

I have not had these problems on other makes.

Has anybody else come accross these problems?

A:Dell Laptops and Vista

Does registering the product = Office validation with Microsoft Genuine Advantage?

www.microsoft.com/genuine

Do the events preceding the Windows Explorer restart process include the fading white background, small blue circle spinning and "Not Responding..."? If so look at 3rd party firewall/ a-v products. Usually the firewall is the cause.

All these symptoms - but only on Dell products?

As far as I remember, on the XP all I did was plug it in. Am I wrong? Should I have a disk hiding around someplace, or is it a program I need to download from HP? (I haven't been able to see one on line.)

A:Dell 1535 from 32 bit Vista to 64 bit Win 7

The 1535 should run W7 64-bit fine since Vista 64-bit is an option for that computer. The W7 installation disk should automatically install most of the drivers you need and for those it doesn't have, the Vista 64-bit drivers here Drivers & Downloads
should work (32-bit drivers will not work with your W7 64-bit installation).

Dell is updating a lot of their drivers now that W7 is out and I wouldn't be surprised to see W7 drivers offered for the 1535 in the near future.

I recently bought a Dell laptop for school. Admittedly I am a newb, and might have messed the pc up further than it already was. BUT....I have contacted Dell multiple times about my issues, and they finally threw up their hands and told me I would have to redo the entire system. I don't really have the time to do this, and was wondering if anyone else would have suggestions to help me fix my pc. I am having the following problems:
Windows Media Center and Windows Media Player are both unable to play music, movies, video either online, on disk, or from the hard drive without skipping
(I am fairly sure the files on my hard drive are not corrupted because I used a pocket drive to move some to a friends pc to check if they still skipped, and they did not)
Videos skip when I try to play them off of websites (i.e. youtube)
Recently my pc will go wacko on me and continue to open internet windows until i spam the task manager "end program" button (it got to about 70 windows once when I left the room and came back) I have run spyware checkers/virus scans and they haven't found anything
Also, the pc tends to run very slow, which makes little sense to me, as I just bought it a month and a half ago.

I am running an XPS M1530
Windows Vista Home Premium
Intel Core 2 Duo CPU T8100 2.10 GHz
4.00 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT

Any help on this would be much appreciated. Even if it is just telling me re programming is necessary. (and maybe how to do it lol)
