Solved: How to choose between Network Places "Views"?

Q: Solved: How to choose between Network Places "Views"?

TerryNet once pointed out to me that there were two ways of looking at Network Places- "Task View" and "Folder View." How do you go about choosing between them?

Attached is a screen shot of the Network Places Tool Bar (sp??). I can't find anywhere a way of changing the 'view'. How is it done??

G'day all,

I am hoping someone may be able to tell me why my local folders appear under "The Internet" on one of our work computers rather than under "Local Network". We have four machines, 3 running XP Home and one running XP Pro. The front machine has XP Home on it and I cannot open any of the shared folders for this machine on any of the other three machines even though they all have the same workgroup name.

They are all connected via CAT5 cable and we have a Netcomm NB5 ADSL2 modem/router, a Netcomm V300 Telephone Adapter(VOIP)/modem and an 8 port switch in the boss's office. And the front computer's folder/s and drives that I have chosen to be shared are listed under "The Internet". Does anyone know why this is and how I would go about correcting it?

Thankyou for your help and time,

Aaron

This is a question for information about why my networking problem finally was resolved.
I have four PC?s on my network; one Windows 7 and three Windows XP. The Windows 7 PC always sees all three of the other computers. However the Windows XP computers sometimes don?t see the other XP computers when I press ?My Network Places.? Quite by accident I discovered that if I press ?View Workgroup Computers? then ALL the other PC?s in the network DO show up. Furthermore, if I click through "View Workgroup Computers" and access/edit a file on one of the other computers, then this computer will ALSO show up in ?My Network Places.? This behavior seems to be quite consistent and works every time I have tried it. Apparently, this is a workaround to the long vexing problem of why my networked PC?s sometimes don?t show up under ?My Network Places.?

My question: why does ?View Workgroup Computers? apparently always show all the networked PC?s, when ?My Network Places? does so only intermittently or sometimes not at all?

Thanks for any response.

My home network is a Kyocera KR2 router sharing an EVDO internet connection to a wired WinXP desktop and to a wireless Winxp laptop. My network works fine (including printer and file sharing), and the internet shares throughout the network fine. My problem is that while browsing the internet, both computers keep bringing up the "Network Connections""Choose a network connection:" message. All I have to do is hit cancel everytime and everything keeps on going until it pops up again. Sometimes it pops up every 30 seconds, sometimes once every 30 minutes... Any ideas how to get this to quit???

Hi,

I'm running Windows XP Pro. I'm not sure if this is possible, but is there a way to combine the contents of "My Computer" and "My Network Places" into one icon? I know how to remove either icon (via TweakUI), but is it possible to, for example, have all of the links in "My Network Places" appear in "My Computer" or vice versa?

Running Windows XP Home Service Pack 2

It seems that what I'm trying to do should be simple. Yet I've literally been trying to do it for over a year. I stumbled upon this forum, so maybe you can make my dreams come true and actually give me a shared network *angels singing*.

Keep in mind, I once had a shared network and everything was fine. Then one day, it mysteriously stopped, and hasn't run since, even after hundreds (literally) of attempts to set it up again.

For the moment, all I want to do is have my computer (we'll call this computer, "Sony Laptop") appear in its own "My Network Places" window - not concerned with the other networked computer at the moment. I have tried "Set up a home or small office network" and "set up a wireless network for a home or small office" dozens of times, chosen every single combination possible, completed them, restarted, but "Sony Laptop" still never appears in "My Network Places." I cannot for the life of me understand it.

If that's all the info you need, please respond. If you want more observations, read below:

A:Windows XP Home "My Network Places" refusing to show network computers

You need to look at the dependency list for each service. In the case of Computer Browser, it's Workstation and Server.

Since Workstation is failing, that's probably the place to start.

Do you have WKSSVC.DLL in C:\Windows\system32? That's the workstation service, and it appears to be the missing module. I'd first try copying that from the installation disk, if it's missing, and then register it too by:

Start, Run, regsvr32 wkssvc.dll

If you can't find the DLL, you can run sfc /scannow to restore missing files.

A shortcut may be to download the file from DLL Dump and register it as described above.

I am running a peer-to-peer LAN of Win XP Pro SP2 boxes. Over 35 of them in a particular workgroup. All static IP addresses.

All machines have File and Print Sharing set up and Windows Firewall turned off.

I have used "HP Install Network Printer Wizard" to install a couple of HP 2300's and a HP 2200d printer, each of which have JetDirect 615N cards installed. But my problem isn't with the installation and use of the printers. In fact, this software works fine and everyone prints happily.

Here's the catch: all machines using HP Install Network Printer Wizard mysteriously disappear from My Network Places (no matter what machine I use to look at My Network Places) after 20 minutes. If I reboot one of them, it's back for about 20 minutes, then gone.

Now, they're pingable and in fact you can find them using the Search button. But they're not visible, and to my staff, this is a major obstacle.

I have 8 boxes without the HP wizard, and they're visible on My Network Places 24/7.

Using a couple different boxes as guinea pigs, I can affirm that deleting the printers, uninstalling HP Install Network Printer Wizard and eliminating references to it in the registry does not reverse the situation and fix the problem. Ugh.

I can also affirm that disabling our Kaspersky Anti-Virus does not solve the "vanishing" problem.

A call to HP Support and subsequent discussion with their reps yielded no help, although they did get a good chu... Read more

OK there is a catch here you know how the printers after 20 min of no using them is going in stand by mode ... for some reason the network card is going in standby mode for the printer also if you try to print over the network you gonna see that the printer is going back visible.
Solution: There was a option in Network Monitor Devices for don't going on that "standby mode" check and see if this will help you.

So this morning I went to class with my Dell Latitude D630 laptop and connected to my schools wireless network with no problem.

I shut down and when I got home and started up, my CPU was stuck at 100% usage. I noticed this when I tried to open "My Network Places" since I normally switch to a cable connection at home and turn off the wireless. I did a McAfee virus scan and came up clean.

The only significant changes I can think of doing recently was converting my external Seagate drive from FAT32 to NTFS.

Tried everything I can think of... cancelling and resetting the folder to share, adding another folder..., nothing.

the "problem pc" cannot see any other pc on the network.
all other connections on the network are visable and working.

Hey fellas,
Recently I adopted a strange problem in Vista x64. I have a home network, which works fine. Just recently, something strange started happening. Now when I click on "network" from the start bar(or anywhere for that matter) the window goes blank, as if its not even going to the "network places". Its hard to describe, so I will paste a screen shot. Sometimes it works fine. When I just boot the computer it works fine, then a little while later it just magically stops(yet anything connected through the network still technically works, like media streaming etc... I just no longer can see anything in "network"). It just seems as if the explorer is not working correctly, but I have no idea what could possibly cause this. I've tried deleting my network and adapters and re-doing everything(including clearing all network info from the registry) and it did nothing. I thought maybe it was a firewall update, so I uninstalled firewall, no effect.

Here's the screenshot:

Any ideas?

It doesn't even come up with the green bar along top or the sidebar on the left. My shared folders on this PC don't even show. Nothing is even displayed in the location bar. Its just as if explorer stops displaying the network after the computer has been on for so long.

If I end task on explorer in task manager and open explorer back up, it works again(like a reboot). Then not after long, it goes back to not working. Very frustrating cause I often transfer files bet... Read more

I’m running two XP Pro desktops as well a Windows Home Server (WHS) computer on a hardwired network. Last week my Belkin Wireless router failed and I installed a new Linksys E1000.

I now again have internet access on all desktops plus my two wireless laptops. In addition, I can access all pc’s via remote desktop.

My problem is that I no longer have network access to these computers – in other words, "My Network Places" keeps telling me "I might not have permissions to use this network resourse". This means that I can’t get to my networked HP printer attached to one of my desktop pc's. In addition I can't view the files except logging on via remote desktop

This all appears to have happened since I installed the new router, however I'm not certain it's a router problem since I was able to borrow another router and had the same situation!

I am reasonably network knowledgable. I can ping all computers with both name or address. For some unknown reason, I do have network access only to my WHS computer.

Spent quite a bit of time on this problem and have run out of idead - greately appreciate any and all help!!

Hi,

1. I just notice there are several items in "My Network Places", these are some websites I have visited before. I can't understand why these websites are in "My Network Places", but most the other websites I visited are not in "My Network Places". I never add these in my computer, and just don't know how and why these items come from. I have try to delete one item in "My Network Places", and it seems that I can easily delete it, but I don't know if it still leaves in other places of my computer. Who can help me figure out how these items added into my computer?

2. Are these items in "My Network Places" become my local network? How does this happen? After install a firewall in my computer these days, I notice that if I open the "My Network Places" page, my firewall ask me if I allow my computer to go to the places in "My Network Places" one-by-one, I don't know what is this.

3. I have read the Windows Help, but it doesn't help much about it. It seems from the Windows Help that normally these computers shared files or printers. How can I share something from several websites I visited?

Please someone help me out. Thanks in advance.

I've got a problem with one of the computers in our workgroup: Looking at My Network Places in Windows XP, it used to be named "Local Network", and the Network Location for each of the computers in our workgroup should also be detailed as "Local Network". I'm not sure how it happened, but now My Network Places has the name of "Internet", and the Network Location of all of the computers in our workgroup on that computer are detailed also as "Internet". All of the other computers on the network are fine, and in fact the files on the computers in our workgroup may still be viewed and accessed via My Network Places on the computer in question. However, trying to (for instance) open a database on our server through My Network Places now yields a security error due to Windows XP believing that our network is an Internet network. Files may still be opened by copying them to the local harddrive, but I would like to change the settings in My Network Places back to the "Local Network" setting that it should register our network as. Any hints/suggestions would be very helpful.
Thanks!

I'm young, so bear with me, I don't know a lot of technical computer terms.
I'm on my moms laptop, which she let me bring with me to my dads house, and I downloaded Manycam last night to screen share with my friend. Today, something that I assume was a virus, in the form of a virus scanner, popped up, called Win 7. It kept telling me to buy their product because my computer was at risk. I showed my dad and he told me to download Malware, and I did and did a real virus scan. I had 26 virus (At least 6 trojan), which were all removed. I rebooted her computer and tried to open Firefox. It told me "Choose the program you want to use to open this file" The only reasonable one was IE so I chose that one. IE opened and started to load but it closed out, and it told me "Do you want to run or save this file?" I chose run, and then it told me "Do you want to run this software?" I chose Run. Then the whole process started over, and there was no end. The same thing happened when I tried to open IE. I tried to reboot the computer again, but no luck..

Any solutions? (I have until Tuesday to fix this)

I've recently clean-installed Windows XP on my Dell Dimension B110. Now, every time I turn my computer on, It asks me to choose an operating system to start. My options are "Windows XP Home Edition" And "Windows XP Home Edition Setup" (Or was it Windows XP Setup?) I have 3 seconds to choose or it starts up the Windows XP Setup. I right-clicked My Computer and went to System Settings > Advanced > Startup and Recovery and the default OS was "Windows XP Setup". I changed it to (from the dropdown box) ""Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition /noexecute=optin /fastdetect". When I clicked Edit in the Startup and Recovery window, (I'm assuming the following is my boot.ini file) it says:

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect

If the default program for an extension is wrong, I find it most natural to change it using the 'Choose Program' option on the 'Open With' menu from the context menu for the file. However, that stopped working correctly a few weeks ago. It is supposed to bring up a dialogue that allows one to choose another program and, optionally, to make that be the new default for the file type. However, what is happening now is that it goes ahead and invokes an irrelevant program (the Emacs text editor) which cannot handle the file. I never see the 'Choose Program' dialogue.

(E.g., I am trying to open a video file with a different player, and, when I click 'Choose Program', it immediately hands the file to Emacs, rather than giving me the chance to say I want to use VLC. (Fortunately, Emacs realizes that the file is too big for anything it can normally do and awaits verification before actually trying.))

I know I can still modify the association using Folder Options; but I would rather get 'Choose Program' working again if anyone can show me how.

I'm Running Windows 7 64 bit, Home Premium, fully updated.

On my laptop (64 bit Windows 7), "Recent Items" works properly, showing all docs I've opened only (no folders, as it should be). The taskbar Jumplists for each program also show recent docs opened in that program.

The "Recent Places" folder, however, is always empty, nor do recent folders show on the Jumplists for folders.

Searching has turned up nothing useful, but tells me I'm not the only one with this issue.

What I've tried already:sfc /scannow
making sure both the "Store and display" options in Taskbar and Start Menu Properties are checked.
making sure the reg key HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Recent points to the correct folder (%APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Recent Items) and that the folder itself is actually named "Recent Items" and not just "Recent"
running a disk scan
Safe mode

Hi,
how can I change this?

Some background - this may not be the issue I need to solve at the end of the day:

I believe the location is causing crashes, since I blew up lots of Library registry values (in an attempt to remove them from the OS), and I think it defaults to the library page.

eg, 2shared - file upload and sharing
[edit: stupid editor auto href'd the text... bah]

crashes IE and Firefox (not Chrome for some reason... possibly because it uses its own code?) when I click the browse button (same for any "browse" button that spawns a native find-your-file thing).

It may be something else, but anyway...

edit: If I disable "Expand to Current Folder" in Win Explorer, the crash does not occur. So perhaps it is trying to expand to a folder that is broken?
I want to keep "Expand to Current Folder" on, though, as I like the feature.

A:Default "Browse for file" location in web browser "choose file" box

Hello Silmeria,

It may be best to do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before you blew up the registry to see if that may sort this for you. Afterwards, you could use the tutorial below instead to remove libraries without blowing up the registry like that.

Libraries Folder - Add or Remove from Navigation Pane

Hope this helps,

Hi, I have Windows 7 Home premium. My question is regarding the "events log" found in Administrative tools.I can clear every log in events under "WINDOWS LOGS", however the one I cant find a way to reset or clear is the one known as "CUSTOM VIEWS" (the one that looks like a folder with a funnel on it. This folder has a drop down icon, that looks like a funnel with the name "ADMINISTRATIVE EVENTS" next to it.When I click this it shows all the warnings and errors going way back to the day I origionally installed windows 7 which was four months ago!No one has come up with an answer to my question or clearly understands which log I am refering to.How do I clear this part of the log? Nothing I do shows any clear or delete options to remove those old way out of date error messages. Is there a way to clear this part of the log and if so, how is it done? Thanks in advance!

A:Windows 7 "custom views" how to clear admin events log?

HiThe Administrative Events is a custom view and compilation of all the critical, warning, and other important events, from certain other logs in the Event Viewer. You would need to clear all of those other logs to clear the Administrative Events list. The easiest way to do this is to note the Source name of the event in the Administrative Events, expand the Applications and Service Logs\Microsoft\Windows Logs.Look for the folder with the Source name. Expand that folder, right click each of the logs under that folder and select the Clear option.Hope this helps.
Thank You for using Windows 7

This does not happen on an old computer with a really old Windows XP installation. Set it at viwe "details" years ago and it has stayed set.

Any ideas on something else to get this to stay as I reset it?

Hello,

I have an Asus Netbook 1005P, running Windows 7, SP1, with Internet Explorer 11.

I am often but not always, experiencing the following issue:

When I attempt to connect to Wifi at a café, the "Wireless Network Connection" for the Network shows "Connected", yet there is no Internet access. Placing the pointer over the Connection icon in the Notification Area displays:

"Unidentified Network No Internet Access".
(The network in question always has an SSID shown in the Wireless Network Connection list.)

This issue occurs whether I am running only the Windows firewall, or am only running the firewall that I prefer which is Comodo.

For antivirus I have Avast Pro (with its "web shield" currently disabled) and so far as this issue is concerned it makes no difference whether this Avast component is enabled or disabled, or whether I disable all Avast Shields.

When this issue occurs, there are often other customers in the café connected to the café wifi and also using the Internet.

I have to ask the café to reset, or turn off and then turn back on, their router, yet other customers do not have to do this to get Internet connection!

This is the issue at whatever café, to whose Wifi I attempt to connect.

Please help with a solution to this issue.

Regards,

Robert339

I'm Running Windows 7 64 bit, Home Premium, fully updated.

On my laptop (64 bit Win7), "Recent Items" works properly, showing all docs I've opened only (no folders, as it should be).

Hello, I have read a few similar posts and the resolutions but it doesn't appear to be working for me. Any help is appreciated. I apologize if I am leaving out any important info.

I'm running a Windows XP PC, wired to a Verizon FIOS modem/router, model MI424WR. I have a second computer connected via wire to this and a third computer connected wirelessly. As of 2 hours ago and for months, all 3 machines have worked fine.

My PC froze while playing a game and I reset it. This is not common but it has happened before without issue upon start up. However this time I received a limited/no connectivity message. When repair was attempted it didn't work because "the network did not assign a network address to the computer". The 2nd and 3rd PC work fine though.

Back on my first PC, when I view the details there is a physical address, IP address, and subnet mask, BUT there is no Default Gateway, DNS Server, or WINS Server.

I have tried the other suggestions I read about RESET TCP/IP stack and RESET WINSOCK entries then restarting my machine but neither of these worked.

Under device manager my NVIDEA nForce networking adapter says it is working properly and there isn't any red X or yellow indicators.

The only weird thing I saw which i have not seen discussed here is when I run IPCONFIG /ALL: It says IP Routing enabled: NO and WINS Proxy enabled: NO.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

Most likely a bug with your Windows phone, not Windows 10. Microsoft is not supporting the Lumia line that well. It does help when you ask for help, that you also post the model of the phone, what OS version it is running, along with screenshots or logs of what is wrong.

Whenever any of our client machines selects "choose form", outlook will automatically try to open the Organizational Forms Library and repond with the error: "Form load failed. You don't have apporpriate permission to perform this operation", after which a drop down box will allow the user to switch to a different folder and find the forms to choose, relegating this to a nuisance. In any case, I'm looking for a way to change the default locatoin to look for "choose form" so this error message won't appear every time. I do not want my already previously set folder in other directories to change. I have looked through the folder view options but just can't seem to get it right. Can anyone help me out please.

A:Solved: "The network did not assign a network address to the computer" error msg

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type devmgmt.msc

Under Network adapters, please tell me all the devices listed. Also, are there any devices anywhere in the Device Manager display with yellow ? or ! displayed?

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following command:

IPCONFIG /ALL

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

For 2 years, My XP computer has had no problems picking up 10-20 wireless connections in my neighborhood, some i could connect to,some i could not because they were secured.

i decided to go straight , and purchase DSL.

i bought a new computer(vista) and got a westell 327 DSL modem, which is also a wireless router. The new computer is working fine, i called Verizon to set up the new computer's dsl wireless network, that worked out fine.

My old computer, the one i spoke about opening this thread, that computer immediately picked up the DSL signal from my new computer in the other room.. The signal was excellent and the name of the network WAS ON THE LIST of the dozen other wireless connections i could connect to. Problem is when i went to connect to my own DSL network, i got this error message:

"Limited or no connectivity
You might not be able to access the internet or some network resource. This problem occurred because the network did not assign a network address to the computer."

I typed in the correct password, the little icon in the corner of my computer said both computers were connected, and with an excellent signal strength. Reiterating: i could still connect and go online with the other avaiable networks running the computer, but not my own.

Recently, my company started working with a company where they wanted to redirect from an internal Intranet Kiosk site to a publicly available application site. The site apparently (due to lack of something) does NOT have the ability to remove any File Upload
links when coming from the Kiosk URL.  The Kiosk computers are running Windows 7 Pro with various GPOs and registry keys locking them down to using Internet Explorer in Kiosk mode replacing the explorer.exe on the user account. The problem is we have
not been able to find a way to Disable "Choose File to Upload" dialogs in Internet Explorer 11. This seems like it should be a pretty straight forward option as you can disable File Downloads using GPOs but apparently disabling File Uploads isn't
something commonly done.
A number of blocks are in place, but there is always the fun the user could have of uploading files by using their Environmental Variables (Example: %WINDIR%\win.ini) that we would like to avoid.  In fact, I'd like to avoid any dialog to avoid any issues
with seeing Libraries or Desktop folder paths.
Given Kiosk Mode for Internet Explorer has been an age old feature, I'm amazed disabling "File Upload" isn't some default option when you set in Kiosk Mode.
Please assist!  Thanks!

Hello,

"Customize" > "Folder pictures" > "Choose a file to show on this folder icon." no matter what picture I choose, nothing changes.

I am the sole user with full privileges/permissions. There are no thumbs.db, desktop.ini or folder.jpg files inside. I didn't disable showing icons/pictures in the explorer options.

Is there a specific image resolution I need to choose, or is something else?

"Folder.jpg" seems to work okay, but I really want to know why the normal route doesn't.

I made a task scheduler for a registry key I edited and it starts the registry on every StartUp, but is there any way I can make it to where when it starts it up, that the registry will automatically choose "Yes", then "Ok" when Windows starts? Because I find it annoying to have to manually click "yes" to allow the registry and then "ok" to close the window saying it was successfully added.

Thanks!

Hello,

We had some type of virus on our desktop computer. It kept warning us we were under attack and kept popping up boxes for us to subscribe to fix it. I finally somehow got our AVG antivirus open to scan and it quarantined it. The problem now is that everytime I click on internet explorer or any other program that uses the internet, a box pops up that says "Choose the program you want to open this file."

When I choose internet explorer, another box pops up saying "File Download - Security Warning" and asks "Do you want to run or save this file?" When I hit "run" it just opens up the previous "Choose the program you want to open this file" box again ... and this just goes round and round in circles !!

Please note that I am older and a real computer novice so I don't understand a lot of the jargon on this board. I have Ad-Aware installed and it finds nothing. And the AVG anti-virus already quarantined the problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated !! I'm at my wit's end!

I select Open With from the right-click menu on a file. Windows won't show my KEDIT editor in the Choose Program list. I "browse" to Kedit in Program Files, select it but W7 refuses to add it to the Open With list of programs from which I can choose to associate the file. Using Control Panel Set Your Default Program produces the same result.

I have a second W7 machine where this does work so I don't know why the first machine fails. Perhaps something is messed up in the registry but adding Kedit in the registry for the filetype didn't help either (unless I didn't pick the right key to modify - there are a few keys for txt).

I am running Outlook 2010 32bit with Windows 7 Pro 64bit. After installing google outlook sync (and subsequently uninstalling) an annoying popup window continues to appear when I start outlook. It asks me to Choose Profile. I have only one profile named "outlook". When you click "options" you can check a box that says "check as default profile" This does not make the annoying popup go away. It still pops up the next time you start outlook. After searching the web for a fix I found one promising work around. Access control panel then select "mail" here you go in to outlook profiles and check make outlook the default profile. The problem is this doesn't work with Windows 7 64bit and Outlook 32bit. In the control panel "mail" is grayed out and when you click on it nothing happens. Does anyone know how you can access Outlook profiles with this set-up?
Thanks in advance.
Oh and there is a very long thread in Google forums with many fixes, all of which I have tried, none of which have worked. it is obviously a problem caused by google outlook sync but google has remained silent.

When I get an attachment (for example sake let's call it a PDF) and the open option isn't available because my laptop doesn't know which program to open it with: I click on "Choose Program" and the box doesn't pop up to give me the options, it just goes to the last file that I was in. Ex: picture folder, My Documents. Does anyone know why the normal box doesn't pop up ,like in XP?

I've been looking all over google for an answer to this, I couldn't find one. Thinking to myself, this is a first. Anyway I'd like it if someone had an answer for this one. I run a computer repair business and would like to add some extra metadata to some of my files for accounting purposes.

Example.I have many pictures/pdfs of invoices from suppliers. I'd like to be able to have a column in windows explorer for the total price of those invoices and I'd like to call it "Total Price" that way I can sort them by price.

Any help would be appreciated, but please don't suggest I use the categories that are already there.

Edit: If this is in the wrong spot, please move it.

Every time I choose Photoshop as the default photo viewer (via Settings | Default Apps | Photo Viewer | Choose a default), nothing happens, meaning: the selection is not accepted or held.

I would like .jpg files to open for viewing in Photoshop. I managed to change the default for .tif files but cannot set the default to open .jpg's in Photoshop.

I have also tried to change the default photo viewer for .jpg's via "Open With" but it doesn't hold that way either.

Any suggestions welcome! Thanks.

A:Need help with getting "Choose a default" to work in Photo Viewer

Try the old fashioned way..................

Right click at Start > Control Panel > top right, click View by > select either large or small > select Default Programs > click Select a file type or protocol with a program > wait for it to load > left side, scroll down to .jpg > click it > top right click Change program > scroll to find your Photo Shop > click it > click OK.

See if jpg now opens with Photo Shop.

I'm running a Dell Dimension 8100 with Windows XP. Whenever I start up my computer, it goes through the Dell and Windows XP loading stuff, then it says "One of your disks needs to be checked for consistancy", etc. But if I let it disk check or just skip it, a blue screen flashes for about a second, and the only things I can catch are "system32" and "Physical Dump".

It then restarts and goes to the screen where you can run in the various safe modes, last known good configuration, or start normally. If I choose any of the safe modes, it starts to load them, but freezes. If I choose last known good configuration or start normally, it'll repeat the whole process. Does anyone know what's going on?

Don't know if this is the right forum, so here goes.

A friend's laptop (running Windows XP Home SP2) contracted the win32/NSanti virus from a USB flash drive. The infection has since been cleaned using two stand alone AVs (the installed AVG could not clean the threat at its source), but now each time an attempt is made to open drives C/D in My Computer, a prompt asking the user to 'choose a program to open' appears. I'm sure this is the damage left from disinfection - so can anyone point into the right direction on how to fix this little problem? All the answers I found on the Internet focus on how to remove the virus itself, which does not any longer apply in my friend's case.

Thanks in advance.

When i view files/folders in Windows Explorer, I would like to have the following details showing for all: Name, Date, Date modified, type, Size, Folder. It appears that I have to do this for every file that I open if it is not already done (View>Choose details... Iguess what I'm asking is if there is a global way of setting these five details?

I have a multiple operating system and used to get the blue graphical boot menu with a rectangle with the name of each operating system in it. After a few boots it went back to the text menu, and only returned a couple of times. Is there a way to get the graphical boot menu back permanently? It looks a lot nicer. I have XP, Vista, 7, 8, 8.1 Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I have Windows 7 64-bit installed. I am frustrated that when using windows explorer, "recent places" is always empty--meaning that I have to always re-navigate through the entire file structure in order to find the folder I want. In spite of other problems I had when using Vista, this was one thing that always worked and that I found extremely helpful and efficient. Why does it not work in Windows 7, even though the tool is included in the options list? It's _always_ empty. I have tried looking through various fora for a fix for this, but without success. Help! There MUST be a way to make this work! Thanks much.

I've come accross an unusual problem that I've never seen before.
I'm on windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

I have a Library called "work". Its actually located in my documents folder.

In this folder I have \Work\Discs\ubuntu. As you may have guessed I work with linux on occasion.
I wanted to create a new folder here but the new folder button was missing from the toolbar and the context menu.
I can create a new folders elsewhere just not here.

I thought as an easy workround I would create a new folder in the parent directory and simply move it. I created it in \work\discs and then moved it into "ununtu" only to find it wasnt there.
If I navigate to the real location of this folder the new folder is there ok.

Then I thought if this folder is playing up I will create a new one and just delete this one so I created \work\discs\ubuntu2 and moved all of the contents of ubuntu to here.
So far so good.
I then created 3 new folders here "1004" "1010" and "1104" I then moved all the files from ubuntu into these folders.

To be clear now \work\disc\ubuntu2 should now contain 3 folders and no files.
I then deleted ubuntu and renamed ubuntu2 --> ubuntu.
I then double clicked on the new "ubuntu " folder expecting to see 3 folders yet I see the contents as it was before I started. If I call it anything other than ubuntu I see the contents fine but if I name it ubuntu it reverts to its old state.

Any Ideas whats causing this.

A:"New Folder" missing but only in certain Places

Did you create the folder in windows or ubuntu... and now it is not accessible in the other one, or both?
