WIFI for internet and switch for local lan, how do I force lan traffic thru switch?

Q: WIFI for internet and switch for local lan, how do I force lan traffic thru switch?

I have a wireless router connected to my modem, and ALL PC's connect to that for internet.

I also have a gigabit switch I use to transfer data in between several of the machines. I do it quite often and I don't want it eating up the wifi bandwidth.
I have done it before, but it has been a long time and I cannot remember how I forced internet traffic over the wifi and local traffic through the switch
Is the only way to do it to specifically tell Windows to use the IP address of the LAN connection? I know it will work that way, forcing local traffic directly to that IP, but I seem to remember there being an easier way to do this.

Thanks.

you need to enable Network Login, but that requires that win2003 have

a domain controller
a DHCP service
and a DNS service.
the Domain Controller is just another name for LDAP and it becomes the control point

Hi Everyone.....
So, I just got Wireless Broadband hooked up in my business. I hooked the LAN to the Router and then hooked up a 16 port gigabit switch. I have three terminals coming out of it (in the bcak of the building) as well as a line running to the front of the building. At the front of the building I have the line going into another 16 port gigabit switch. I have 4 computer terminals coming out of that switch. I AM getting internet at the back of the building .....but nothing at any of the terminals after the second switch (front of the building). Can someone help?

Thanks!

Alright, here's something for the brainiacs in the house, a little tougher than the usual "my laptop won't connect to my modem" question

I have a DVR/NAS/IP camera setup on a number of sites, using a dedicated PoE switch, that links into the company's LAN via one port to provide them remote viewing of the DVR. Basically, the DVR is set up multi-homed: camera network (including NAS data port) is all 192.168.2.*, company network is 10.0.xx.* (where xx is the site number, including NAS console port), with a gateway of 10.0.xx.254.

This has been working well so far on previous sites, but on this latest site, the network guy wants us to install a separate NIC in the DVR for the company LAN uplink, to keep the camera traffic off the LAN (my understanding is this really shouldn't be a problem, but whatever, that's what the customer wants...).

Thing is, this is a fully L2/L3 managed switch (Cisco SF302-08P - eight 10/100 PoE ports, two GbE ports)... manual here), and I'm thinking, it should be a simple matter to just add some filtering or traffic control that will tell the switch to block all 192.168.2.* traffic from the uplink... catch is, I've never needed to do this sort of thing before, so I'm at a complete loss as to where to start. QoS? VLAN? ACLs? E-I-E-I-O?

I'm a quick study, so if I even had a clue as to which method to use, I could probably muddle it out... I just don't know where to start.

Basic setup is li... Read more

I've just upgraded to a new Netgear GS724AT, one of their line of 'smart' switches that does a lot of what a router would do, except it doesn't route. This was done to gain access to higher end features such as link aggregation and VLANs.

The first thing I noticed was that my Macs, which use a lot of bonjour (same as zeroconf or mDNS) no longer heard from the other advertising devices, such as file servers. In fact, I no longer see any of the PC file servers or any AFP servers.

Looking deeper, it appears that the switch takes a more active role in managing multicast traffic, something a standard desktop switch doesn't do. I tried playing with settings around IGMP snooping but nothing seems to make that multicast traffic come back.

Anyone know what the smart switch might be doing that a simple switch would not do, and how I can make the smart switch quit it?

Thanks!

Hi,

I'm a loyal Windows user (currently using Windows 7 x64) but something about the OSX operating systems that teases me a lot which is their font smoothing technology which, for my eyes, looks fantastic (sharp, crisp, & clear). I've got this taste using Apple Safari browser on Windows (which is almost dead now as apple seems not willing to update it any longer).

For me switching to MAC just for the font smoothing technology is a BIG hassle in terms of huge money spent on hardware and software as well.

I tried projects like Gdipp but they have their own glitches and it seems like the project is dead (no new release since Sep 2010) (Downloads - gdipp - Customizable Windows text renderers - Google Project Hosting)

Is there anyway to have that clear sharp text possessed by OSX everywhere in Windows 7 someway or the other? (not only the browser)? For example, is there any laptops with dense displays that can compensate the poor looking of Windows fonts? Is there any hope in Windows 9 to cure that issue? (I can wait for it if it will do something about this issue).

When I troubleshoot the network adapter, I get a messAge that reads that my wireless capability is turned off. When I go to the Gateway Device fast lane, my WiFi is on. But when I look in networks it as shows WiFi off and I am unable to turn it on that way. When I go to wireless devices in pc settings, the toggle button for the wire device is grey, therefore I am unable to switch it on- It used to work.

Also, while in the Gateway Device fast lane, when I press the F3 key the airplane mode goes on...the WiFi goes off...by comes right back on. Please help...

Need to no if I have this right

they have a dsl modem going to a Linksys router to a 24 port switch then to a little 4 port switch. sure, so then Would it be modem to router then router to any port on the big switch or is there an uplink port on the big switch it should go to? then you would hook a cat5e from one of the regular ports on the 24 port switch and run it to the uplink port on the 4 port switch need to no if the whole sequence is right. Hope someone can help, john will told me the cable would go from the big switch to the uplink on the small switch but I am wondering if I have it all right or not and wonderiing about from the router to the 24 port switch does the cable just go in a regular port in the big switch or if there is an uplink port does it go there. Hope you can understand my rambleing here. Thanks (please don't send me to a link) just need to no modem to router to regular port or uplink port on 24 port switch then from regular port on 24 port switch to uplink port on the 4 port switch. A:Solved: Windows xp hookup question for modem, router, switch, to switch?

Router to uplink port on 24 port switch, and then normal port on the 24 port switch to uplink port on the second 4 port switch. An auto-MDX port on a device negates the need to worry about uplink ports for that particular cable connection.

I have Windows 7 Professional on my PC. In the first load I had, the PC should automatically detect if the LAN cable was plugged in, turn off the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable was now in use.
Unfortunately, I had to reload my PC, and since then I can't get it to do it again.
So, what I'd like to achieve is this: Have Windows automatically detect when the cable is plugged in, turn of the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable is in use - and, obviously, vice versa.
Can someone tell me what I need to do, please?

A:Have Windows 7 automatically switch to LAN when cable is plugged in and switch to wireless when it's removed

Hi,
There are two methods can help you.
1. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings> and right click your wired and wireless adapters one at a time to change the properties. Select IPv4, click <Properties>
then click <Advanced>. For each one, clear the "Automatic metric" check box and assign the metric value manually. Setting your wired adapter?s metric value lower than wireless adapter one, such as ?1? for wired adapter and ?2? for wired adapter.

2. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings>,
hold down 'alt' to bring up the "File" menu, select "Advanced", select
"Advanced Settings" from the dropdown menu, adjust the priority of your wired adapter higher than your wireless adapter in the "Advanced Settings" window under the "Adapters and Bindings" tab.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

If I wanted to hook another mini linksys switch into the bigger switch would you run the cat5e cable from the first switch to a reg port in the second switch or would you run it to the uplink port and then hook the 1 or 2 computers into the reg ports of the second switch.??

Hi everyone, I searched through the forums but couldn't really find what I was looking for.

Currently we have a DHCP server set up to a switch, that has a special line connecting to a switch in our shop which is just across our back lot, giving network access to the few computers over there. They recently put in a new machine that needs network access, but they have already accidentally cut two ethernet cords. I'm looking to provide a wireless solution for the machine, but I don't want to have to spend a few thousand dollars on a large wireless switch.

Can I plug a wireless router into the switch in our shop, and essentially turn it into a wireless bridge, or is there another, simpler way to do this?

If this has already been answered, sorry for missing it!

Thanks!

Hello. I have a question to ask you. I need your honest opinion here. Switching ISPs and some personal thoughts and advice. (NOTE: WISP = Wireless Internet Service Provider)

I currently have Time Warner Cable's Turbo Speed Internet at 20 Mbps download speed 2 Mbps
upload speed. I am happy with TWC's true 20/2 speed and no issues; however I would like to save some money from the fearless, ever rate increasing TWC gluttons every year now. The reason for the change: I would like to save money (Paying $50 per month with their latest TWC promo that I pushed very hard to acquire since I already been their customer. They could not do better than that. For Turbo, yes I did do good. Saving approx. $18 a month. But do I really need it?) and still have reasonable amount of Internet speed for my current demands. In terms of my Internet hardware usage and for what I have and do online, I do not have much in demand for higher speeds. I have a live Internet streaming radio console (10/100 Mbps Ethernet connection; no SD or HD video) and an older Windows 7 Pro desktop (non-Gigabit speed) computer -- the only hardware requiring Internet requirements I have to date. No gaming or video streaming devices or online I do. A video streaming service in the future like Netflix (online or device) is a possibility, but I'm totally undecided at the moment about it. I have a Motorola SB6141 modem and Netgear WNDR3700v1 router. The most intense Internet speed requirement I currently do on my desktop wo... Read more

A:Is It Wise To Switch My ISP From TWC To A Local Fixed WISP?

1. Probably not.
2. Probably not.
3.Yes I think so.
4. I think you can expect good service from the new provider. Of course you know any video streaming service can get overloaded by demand. They also have a money back grantee if for some reason speeds are not as advertised. That could be for example trees in the way of the signal, unable to get line of site to the towers. Although I do not use this system it is also available in my county from the area town utility for folks not on the cable or fiber. I thought that I had this all figured out, but my dad just asked me a question about my setup, and I can't answer it.

The setup is like this:
[ip-phones + computers]-->[small switch]-->[managed L2 switch]-->[router]-->[modem]

I have several ip-phones and computers grouped into blocks of 8. Each set of 8 is a medley of phones/computers connected to a small switch http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...nksys/Common/VisitorWrapper&lid=3681322279B34

Each of these switches, in turn, will be connected to a managed L2 switch http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/pwcnt_3448p?c=ca&cs=calca1&l=en&s=biz that will create 2 VLANS: One VLAN will contain all of the phones, and the other will contain all of the computers. In turn, each VLAN will have its own router and DSL modem, thereby separating the network traffic.

I know that I can use this L2 switch to make the VLANS based on the MAC addresses of the devices. However, the smaller switches do not support 802.1q [VLANs]. Will it be a problem that the smaller switches do not support VLANs? Essentially, will this setup work to split up network traffic?

Thanks once again,
-Roger

A:Computer, switch, switch, router, modem

I have the same DELL switch for my phones. You PoE will not carry across the linksys switches, so that is the first problem.
Next are the computers attached to the phones? Or does each device get its own drop?

And whats this about 2 routers and modems? Thats a bit over kill!! QoS would do the trick.

I would run all the devices off the Dell and attach the computers to the Phones (most IP Phones have a passthrough port) Configure the Dell with trunk ports with the Computer VLAN passing untagged traffic making it the native VLAN. While having the phones on a Tagged VLAN(If you phones conig allows you to set the VLAN in its config great! If not you can bind the MAC to the VLAN). The you create a QoS policy giving the VoIP traffic priority!

I was playing a game on my laptop and decided to switch from wifi to ethernet. I plugged in the ethernet and turned off the wifi switch to ensure it switched over, but later when I tried to turn wifi back on, I see the wifi on/off switch is grayed out.

I went to my device manager to check for wifi network adapter driver updates, but everything seemed pretty up to date.

Any recommendations on how to fix this? Or at the least another method of turning the wifi on, like through command prompt or something?

Thanks

A:WIFI on/off switch is grayed out

So to fix this what I did was hit the airplane mode key on my keyboard. The wifi switch in the pic I posted would stop being grayed out for about 5 seconds, and I had to switch it on in that time.

I'll note that flipping the airplane mode switch right above the wifi switch didn't do this, so I don't have a clue how it worked out.

Did it work as expected with Vista? Maybe there is a Packard Bell WLAN utility you need to download from their web site? If no Windows 7 one maybe a Vista one that will still work.

When the WiFi button (F12) is pressed the LED show red and a message on-screen briefly says "Flight Mode ON" and the network connection icon in the notification area shows a red X. - this is expected - however When I press F12 the on screen message does breifly display "Flight Mode OFF", but the LED stays orange and WiFi is disbaled. If I click the network icon in the notification area the panel that appears says Flight Mode OFF, WiFi (OFF). I simply cannot re-enable the WiFi with the F12 key. If I go to Computer->Properties->Device Manager, select the Wireless Adapter I can switch the WiFi back on by going to the Advanced tab and selecting Radio->Enable. If I do this the let then goes white and WiFi is OK. So what is going on - why can't I simply toggle the WiFi off and on with the F12 key. Why to I have to resort to the device manager to switch it back on again?

Hello I just bought a brand new computer 3 days ago. Haven't been using it that long. It's an HP Envy 810qe or something like that. The first day I played on it 77 windows updates were downloaded.

The computer has built in Bluetooth which I love but I noticed it was always-on and was wondering if there was an on/off switch. I searched Google and seen there is an on/off switch in PC Settings, PC Devices, Bluetooth. Unfortunately I do not have this. Also under PC Settings and Network I do not have an on/off switch for the wifi. I also don't have anything in PC Settings called Wireless. I talked with HP support (since I just bought this computer) their only option was to do a System Restore or Recovery. I talked to Microsoft support and their only option was to pay for a premium membership so they could use their 'advanced tools' to scan my system and find out the problem. (which is my long history of dealing with computers and support their answer would have probably been the same which was System Restore or Recovery, at which who even knows if this is going to fix the problem)

So now I come to this community my first time here (wave) asking for assistance. A:Bluetooth and Wifi no on/off switch in PC settings

Hi summerbear. I can try something that works on my MSI laptop (a great brand BTW), and I think most of todays' laptops.
Usualy there's an allin1 manager to all of the options you mentioned, and it is accessible through the start line in windows (at the bottom). Most of the time you don't see all the icons of programs running, and there's a little upward arrow in far right side of the start line, that if clicked reveals sound, storage, and allin1 managers installed in your system. In my laptop this manager program that includes control over volume, wi-fi, and bluetooth, is called SCM. I'm not sure that HP's has the exact same program but there's supposed to be some type of allin1. If you don't find any try typing "Bluetooth" in windows search (through the start button), and shutting down wi-fi is also possible by clicking the network bars in the far right, thus accessing the list of nearby wi-fi networks, choosing the one you're connected to, and clicking "disconnect".
Hope I helped, goodluck.
Amit.

Hi,
I run an Ethernet cable to my modem for my Windows 10 PC. But unfortunately I have a lot of drop outs where the internet just stops (something I am taking up with my provider) and I have a pocket wifi to use as a back up.

My PC can find the wifi and connect but the only way I can get it to connect is by pulling out the blue Ethernet cable from the actual pc. (When I say connect, I mean it is "connected" already but not in use, the small box appears for the ethernet cable rather than the wifi icon)

I would like to know if there is a way to either run the wifi simultaneously with the Ethernet cable plugged in or if there is a way to "turn off" the Ethernet connection from my pc when it goes down, so that I dont have to keep unplugging it.

I am not very technically minded and am worried if I go into advanced network settings etc that I might not be able to get the Ethernet working again once it is plugged in and back up and running.

Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

A:How can I switch to WIFI from Ethernet instantly??

You can have both plugged in and still work. Each NIC is assigned a metric and the NIC with the lowest metric will be used. If in your are the wired NIC is still seen as available but in fact it's having problems the computer will still try and use it unless you unplug the cable. If your computer supports a feature called LAN/WLAN switching that may work in your case that may work or may suffer from the same problem in which the wired NIC is still detected as connected and it won't switch. If you are only having an issue with the wired connection why not just stay on wireless?

I was using Windows 7 Home Basic preinstalled with the laptop since 2011. The laptop was working fine. After upgrading to Windows 10 the WiFi and Bluetooth is not working. Tried help from Microsoft remotely. According to them the drivers are not working and there is no updated drivers available for Windows 10 on HP website. The driver installed presently is "Broadcom 4313GN 802.11b/g/n 1x1 Wi-Fi Adapter".Please help and advise whether to stick with Windows 10 or to roll back to Windows 7 as I have an option to purchase a removable device to use WiFi and Bluetooth.I love the lightness of the new operating system. A:Not able to switch on WiFi and Bluetooth after upgrading to ...

Hello @Banti2?, Welcome to the HP Support Forums! It is a great place to find the help you need, both from other users, HP experts and other support personnel. I read your post about the Windows 10 upgrade, and wanted to assist you!You can use the Go back to an earlier build option, in your System Settings: HP Notebook PCs - Upgrading to Windows 10Once you are back to your original Operating System, check to see if you are experiencing the same issue. If not, then you may consider holding off on the Windows 10 upgrade for a few weeks, until drivers can be updated. However, if you are able to get the WiFi and Bluetooth to work, using an external device, then you can continue to use Windows 10.  Keep in mind, that the rollback option is only good for the first 28 days, after installing Windows 10. Please let me know if this information was helpful by clicking the thumbs up below.Regards!

I have a 6 month old Yoga 500 and this is the second time this has happened.  The last time I was resigned to taking it back to the shop and the day I was going to do it I turned it on for one last time and it was working perfectly again! Here are the symptoms  Fan running at full speedKeyboard not responding - touch screen working fine and can log in and use WindowsWiFi showing as off with Red Cross on wifi symbol.  In settings, option to turn it on is greyed out.  Ive carried out a Windows restore to a date last week when everything was working fine I've disabled and enabled the wifi card through device managerI've uninstalled and reinstalled wifi card drivers The last time it happened I also carried out a full factory restore but this didn't work.  As mentioned above, it just started working again.  So I'm not going to go through the hassle of trying that again. Any suggestions before I take it back to the shop?

What make/model is the computer?

If it is a slide switch and you broke off the part that sticks outside the case, you might be able to use a toothpick or other small stiff object to reach through the slot and slide it to the ON position.

The title basically spells it out. I would like to know if leaving my WiFi switch on my laptop on all the time is a bad idea? Would I see any performance hit because my system is constantly looking for a WiFi signal?

A:Is it alright if I leave my Wifi switch on all the time?

I leave my switch on all the time and have never seen any performance hit. It would be mighty inconvenient to keep it switched off, then switch it on everytime I need to use the internet.

And your system is not constantly looking for a wifi signal. Once you've connected to your home network, it would stay connected to that.

Hi,

I think I know what I want, but I just wanted to check before I splashed the cash and made the wrong choice!

I have a Humax Freesat recorder and a Panasonic Blu-Ray player. Both of which have services that need internet access, but neither are WIFI enabled & are the wrong side of the room to be connected via cabled ethernet.

I believe that what I need is to wireless access point? I'd like one with a built in switch as well, as most seem to only come with only one port. The one I found has four, which would be useful as I could replace the poor wireless Xbox 360 dongle.

The one I was looking at was http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B004JV42A0/sr=1-1/qid=1325091993/ref=olp_product_details?ie=UTF8&me=&qid=1325091993&sr=1-1&seller=. This seems very cheap.

Can anyone tell me if this will do what I want & whether there is anything better without spending a fortune?

Many thanks in advance
Tom

I have a Toshiba satellite L350D 01M laptop. My warranty period is over and I wanted to clean out the fans etc... and I have taken apart many laptops in the past but man it was hard to get all the connectors from the keyboard etc hooked up without unplugging another one because of the lack of wiggle room, how the guys at Toshiba put them together i will never know anyway i finally managed to get them all hooked up and the case back together but the wifi radio switch next to the SD slot was not aligned properly and rather than go through the nightmare of hooking it all back up again i forced the switch a little too much well actually a lot too much as i busted the dang thing right off.

so now i can't switch on the wifi which ain't that bad for home 'cause i have a wired modem but when i am out and about i need the wifi capability. someone suggested bridging the two connections i can see inside (a guy at staples) but that if it did work each time i shut it down i would have to bridge it again, well I tried that and I did something wrong as the whole system shut off like a lightening bolt and i thought i fried the motherboard as i couldn't get it to turn on, but i unhooked the battery unplugged and held down the power button for ten seconds then i plugged it back in minus the battery and luckily it worked, there is no way i am going to try that again and if i don't have to (i can't afford it anyway) is there anyway i can bypass the hardwire switch... ...but it's not.

Hi, I'm Antonio. About a month ago, while I was doing work, I tried to access Ubuntu from my jump drive to look at a certain application (don't remember what). Couldn't get the wifi working in Ubuntu (as had happened in the past), so I gave up. When I got back to Windows 8, the wi-fi was not working in Windows, either! It's still not working. Despite the wifi switch being clearly in the "on" position, it doesn't think the wifi is on. Toggling the switch with the Device manager open shows the Bluetooth drivers popping in and out, so the switch is physically working, at any rate. The wifi drivers stay put, and Device Manager thinks they're working fine.

Sony Vaio S series laptop (VPCSB11FX). Windows 8, 64-bit. I've tried:

-Deleting and re-installing drivers.
-Deleting and re-enabling.
-Doing a system refresh.

If I go back into Ubuntu (as I'm doing now), I can fire off an "rfkill unblock all" command, and the wifi works. Hardware swtich and all. How do I get Windows to think my switch is on, and that my hardware is working?

I have a pesky little brother who keeps switching off the WiFi switch on my laptop when I leave home without some downloads on. He does so that he can hog up all the bandwidth for himself.

Is there any way I could disable the WiFi switch so that my WiFi stays on at all times? I have a Lenovo Y560.

Thanks.

A:Disable WiFi hardware switch on laptop

If he can't turn off the WiFi what will stop him from just powering the system down?

There may be a way to catch the key using AutoHotkey. You would have to have a script running that echos the vk key codes as each key is pressed. Once you know the code for the WiFi key you can just intercept it with a one line script.

But he could still just close the program running the script or hold down the power button.

Have you already checked the BIOS if you have installed the newest version? If not check this on Toshiba website and make a BIOS update. Maybe it helps?

But I had a similar problem last year and the solution was exchanging the WLAN card.

I think your Tecra S11 should be still under warranty and in such cases the repair would be for free. :)

And user can access internet only through this particular SSID(HR) and remaing SSIDs are used by other important users. when user comes to us with this issue, we are adding it manually in Network sharing and Center>Manage wireless>Add . when user connects this SSID(HR), it takes windows login ID and password as credentials. there is no issue with other SSIDs.

Hi Shayashkar,

Have you checked first of all that the wireless switch is enabled on the right hand side? Also go in to the BIOS (F2 on startup) and check that the Wireless Switch is set to "ALL" and the Wireless Device Enable is set to "ALL"
If it is still not turning on, I'd suggest updating the Wireless Driver. Follow this link [View:]
and choose Network and download the latest driver for your WLAN card. If you know the Service Tag enter that and it will list the drivers for your particular configuration. Let me know if the issue is resolved or if you are still having issues.

I understand that a hub is more like a party line, where all devices hear and read data before sending it to next port, and a switch is advanced hub. But, what is a router. I know what a wireless router is, but they say a router is more advanced than a switch. Can you buy a non-wireless router?

Also, can you connect 2 switches together? So, Modem-----to Switch----to Switch----Computer

And both switches have other devices connected?

A:Hub vs Switch vs Router/ 2 Switch Story

you CAN buy a non-wireless router--but--the two I found on Amazon were only 10/100 (most modern systems use gigabit ethernet 10/100/1000) but wired are generally cheaper than a wireless router(the Cisco below is NOT cheap)--however--it's not necessary to use the wireless part of the wireless router as most have at least 4 ports (wired).

Yes you can connect switches together but they won't allow for multiple computers to connect to the Internet (at least not easily nor in a way that makes sense).

What devices are you trying to connect together?

wired routers:

We are moving to a new office location. The guys who will be setting our network is proposing the following equipment:

1. 3Com 24-port 10/100 mbps switch
2. 24-port Patch panel
3. 6u data cabinet
4. 1u cable management

The new office will be a 2-floor building with around 40 computers. I asked some of my friends who are more expert on network setup and told me typical switch (Linksys, Cisco) will do if we need to save some money.

What do you think? Thanks a lot!

A:Is 3Com 24-switch necessary or typical switch will do?

Well, first off, I'd be specifying a gigabit switch for expandability, I can't see investing in a 10/100 switch in 2010! If you don't need a managed switch, or need to save money initially, and unmanaged switch will probably be significantly cheaper.

In point of fact, if you want to go really cheap, you can get away for less than $100!

I have succesfully used a Hyper-V virtual switch connected to the wireless adapter in my laptop. All my VM's could access my LAN independently, and could get an ip address from the DHCP server. This means, AFAIK, that my wireless adapter can and does opererate in promiscuous mode.

This worked up to build 10586. Today, I upgraded to build 11102, and this setup no longer works. It appears that wifi adapters are simply not supported with Hyper-V virtual switches. Bummer.

When you try to configure a wifi adapter in a virtual switch, it is not simply grayed out, or otherwise made impossible, but it tries to go ahead and then gives an error message (see attachment)

This does not make sense. There is no other bridge or switch configured.

I found two work-arounds:

- configure the wired ethernet adapter to the virtual switch, and create a bridge connection between the wired and the wifi adapters. For me this does not work, because I get an other error trying to create the bridge connection, which I will report in an other thread.

- use ICS. This works, but has the huge disadvantage of having a NAT layer between the VM's and the rest of my network.

Has anyone experimented with this, too?

Bart

I am about to add 3 new servers into an existing network, which is currently all on 1gbps ethernet. All of the new servers are SSD-based and to me it makes sense to go with 10gbps coming out of the servers into a switch, and then 1gbps out to the workstations.

The new server location is about 200 feet from the existing networking equipment/old server location, so using Cat 6A/Cat 7 copper would be REALLY nice/economical.

Where I am hitting a jam is any 48 port gigabit + 4 10gbps switch is $$$.

I am trying to find a small 10gbps copper switch, say an 8 port, that is expandable, and compatible with a 48 port 1gbps switch. Does such a thing exist?

I noticed that when, by this Microsoft account, I perform the procedure to switch back to the local account, the name displayed on the logon screen, it is to be returned to the original one (ie, the one of the directory of the local user profile). How come?

So, how do I make sure that, at the end of these procedures, the account name back to being what had been changed by me?

After googling it, I tried different options, such as flushing out the proxy even though I don't run on proxy, I disabled McAfee to make sure it wasn't the firewall, I signed into live and removed all trusted devices, I tried downloading the troubleshooter, which
told me my problem was that I didn't have a Microsoft account - super helpful.
Nothing seems to be working.
I then went on to trying to make a new microsoft account, but the error code still came up after all that hassle too.
I eventually called it a night and decided I could probably just get by without it, however, when I tried to download software to install my printer, it wouldn't let me because I cannot seem to log in to my Microsoft account.
Can anyone help?

Hi all, a very Merry Christmas to you all. I hope you all got what you wanted. :-)

I am intending to setup a mini network around my house. I currently have two PC's in my room that I want to connect via an Ethernet cable. I have also ordered a switch. Please see the diagram below followed by the references. Apologies for my lack of creativity/drawing skills. )

Switch: 8-Port 10/100Mbps Desktop Switch TL-SF1008D - Welcome to TP-LINK
Ethernet cable connecting router to switch: CSL - 15m - CAT.6 Ethernet Gigabit Lan network cable |: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics
Ethernet cable connecting switch to PCs: Your everyday, bog-standard CAT5 cable.

So, I was wondering if I would be able to get internet through to PC1 and PC2 using this method.

I look forward to your responses. If you have any questions, please ask.

All the best,
Daniel

A:Internet through switch to other PCs

Should work fine, my home network has a router and multiple switches. You could have gone with Cat 5 cable instead of Cat 6 since your router doesn't support gigabit speeds but it won't hurt anything.

Hi
I've upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1 and stupidly created a Microsoft account during the upgrade procedure rather than using a local account (which is what I was using before). I want to go back to using the local account and have tried going to "Your
Account" - "Disconnect" - "Switch to a local account". However, as I want everything to go back to how it was before I upgraded I've tried entering the same username as before but I keep getting the following message "Windows
is already using that name. Please enter a different username". Is there anyway I can log into a local account using the same username as before or do I need to create a new username (and therefore a new account?).
Any help to make this problem go away would be much appreciated!
Myzo.

A:Switch to local account - "Windows is already using that name"

Hi,
According to your description, I think you may made a misunderstand for your operation. In the interface of ?Switch to a local account?, it means to create a new user account, as you already had a same name local account, you would receive this error report.
If you want to switch to your local account, you can follow the steps below to access other account.
Firstly, check your current user account. Control Panel\User Accounts\User Accounts\Manage User Account. Verifying whether your local account still exists.
Secondly, WIN+C, click Power, then choose
Switch User Account. After that, choose your local user account.Roger Lu

Hi

With Windows 8.1 Update 1, when I switch a local account to a Microsoft account or vice versa, some dialog and confirmation/verification screen are displayed.

It is possbile to save the inserted data in this dialog screens and eliminate confirmation/verification screen in order to automate these procedures?

Thanks

Bye

A:Automatic switch a local account to a Microsoft account or

Hello Balubeto,

Sorry, but no.

If I may ask, why do you need to switch your user account on the PC back and forth between being a local and Microsoft account?

A Microsoft account can do everything that a local account can.

If you really need to have or use both accounts, then you might consider have two user accounts on the PC. One your Microsoft account, and the other a local account. This way you could just switch between signing in to your user accounts instead.

Hi everyone, I have two laptops - a Toshiba and a Averatec. I know a router can be used to share internet between to two laptops. My question is can a switch be used to do the same thing? If so, how? I connected my cable modem to the uplink port on the switch and then connected the two laptops via the ports on the switch. But it didn't work. Thanks for everyones help!

can 2 routers. "the first one is an wireless internet connection". and the other one is a "DSL connection". is it possible if i connect the two routers in 1 switch if both of them have different ip address?what will happened? cause i want to avail a DSL connection w/ 1mbps but I already have a wireless internet connnection w/ 364kbps? but i want them to be both used at the same time so my wireless connection won't go to waste.

A:2 Routers w/ different internet con and 1 switch is it possible?

No you can not do this

Code:

isp#1 --- switch --- isp#2
+
+---- system with 2x bandwidth

You can create dual access, but it will not give 2x bandwidth!

Code:
isp#1---- system --- isp#2
the system needs TWO adapters ( (2) Nics or (2) WifI or (1) each and the Wifi needs a wireless router for EACH)

The issue will be the default routing will FORCE most access to be via one of the
isp's and only those IP addresses you add for explicit routing to the other adapter
will use the second path.

Internally, Once a connection is made from your system to a website, only that
connection will be used for transport -- the other ISP is ignorant of the traffic.

You're into the reason for Torents which have special coding to open multiple
connections to increase the download time, but even then, all of the connections
will still be lopsided and ignore the second ISP.

Heya

I just installed Windows Vista x64 and immediately ran into network problems. My Network and Sharing center said my connection was connecting/disconnecting every few seconds and I was unable to reach the internet.

My network is something like this (ignore the periods, they're there because the field won't format blank spaces :P ) :

Cable modem ---> Linksys SD2005 Switch ---> Wireless router ---> Game systems
...................................|......................... (Netgear WGT624)
...................................|
...................................+--->Vista 32 Bit PC
...................................+--->Windows XP SP2 PC
...................................+--->Vista x64 (mine)

I have 4 separate IPs from my ISP so I can RDP into anything not behind the router from work. The wireless is just nice for random devices. All 3 PCs have independent IPs assigned from the ISPs DNS. All systems work fine except the x64.

I thought it was my on-board NIC so I went and bought a PCI NIC. It did the same thing. At this point I think I might have 2 bad NICs so i went and got a third - same thing. I read around on some forums and tweaked my duplex settings which stopped the connect/disconnect, but then I got something like this in my Network and Sharing Center:

x64 ===>green===>Unidentified Network===> X ===> Internet

Changing the duplex settings around did not resolve this.

Next, I followed a Microsoft fix and changed a setting i... Read more

A:No internet connection through a switch

Wait you have 4 IP's but they aren't static. How do you know what you're connecting to when you're at work? Just guess?

Personally if it were me, I'd stick all of the devices behind the router and use something like logmein to connect to my devices from work.

Hi..... I need to share internet and 2 printers (hp officejet 4500 g510g-m and canon lbp 2900) with 6 desktops(4 Win 7, 2 Win XP). I have got a Belkin N150 ADSL modem+router and a brand new Dlink DES-1008A 8-port switch. So, when I connect each computer to the switch and switch to the modem I am able to share printers with other desktops but I am not able to access internet on any desktop. When I look up modem's DHCP client list, I can see all the desktops getting ip's from the router but when I see it's "security log" it shows IP:x.x.x.x ARP failed and ip is returned to the pool and the desktops go off the DHCP list. I don't know what that means. I guess it tries to assign IP but fails to get any response from desktops. Running ipconfig /all shows autoconfigured ip assigned by the respective OS.

What am I doing wrong?

I just bought a netgear Cable/DSL router with an 8 port switch built in. I am currently still at school, so there is no need for the router, but I want to use the hardware as a switch. I am confused as to how to set this up.

The router I have is a Netgear RO318.

I know very little about setting up networks, but I assumed it would be the same as just switching out the hub. Boy was I wrong. I switched them out and it doesn't work like I thought it would. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks all.

So I just bought a KVM Switch mini size, the guy at the store told me that it would do the trick. The trick meaning that I would be able to switch between the Xbox 360 and the PC with no problems, at first I had a lot of trouble getting it to work until I realised that I had forgotten to plug the keyboard cable into the KVM Switch. At least I managed to get things to work... A bit.
The problem is that I manage to switch between the PC and the 360, but once I've switched to the 360 it immediately goes back to the PC. I've checked everything in the manual and I'm doing it "right" as far as I know:
"7. Switch between the computers (PC1 and PC2) by pressing the 'Select' button on the front panel.

Use the 'Hot Key' command on the keyboard. Press [Scroll Lock] quickly twice and then [1] or [2] to switch between computer 1 and computer 2."

Whenever I do this the KVM Switch beeps, switches to the 360 then back to the PC, could anyone please give me a hand?

Hello. I currently have a home network as follows.

3 PC's connected to router.
router connected to cable modem.

I would like to increase the througput on my LAN (amongst the 3 pc's) so I'm thinking about adding a switch such that it would be [3pc's->switch->router-cable modem]. I was wondering whether adding the switch would actually improve the LAN thoroughput or is this just adding unnecessarily repetetive. I am aware of the "7 layers of the osi model" of networking but am wondering whether switches and routers work on the same layers. Im assuming NO because router bases routing based on IP address while switch will deal with the MAC addresses (am i correct???). Since a switch will perform less inspections on the packets (IP filtering, SPI, etc..) am I going to get better results when adding the switch??

BTW, my router: SMC2804WBR
Switch i might add: Gigafast Mini Switch EZ500-S

A:To switch or not to switch? That is the question.

Your router has a 100Mbit switch in it so unless you are getting a gigabit switch and your PCs have gigabit interfaces you will get no significant boost in network speed.

You may get a small speed inrease if you buy a good 100Mbit switch - the ones integrated in home routers tend to be the bottom of the barrel type - this will give you some extra under very high loads.

What is a "good" switch? You would want something with crossbar fabric and/or cut-through packet forwarding (those are expensive).

Hi - I am having to extend my network and want to use 2 switches. Current one is a Belkin 5 port 10/100. Now thinking of buying the:

Belkin 8 port 10/100 (F5D5513Iuk8) or
Netgear 8 port 10/100 (FS608) or
Netgear Prosafe 8 port 10/100 (FS108).

Which is the best one to get (I realise the Netgear Prosafe is normally more expensive but I can get it at the same price as the Belkin)?

Could anybody also advise if the second switch will provide as much speed (bandwidth, I think) to the PCs it supplies (3) as the first one which will be linked to my router and 3 PCs and a couple of printers. I would really appreciate any advice you can give - I have spent ages Googling this question and am still not clear.

Many thanks

Hi all,

Just wondering if I can connect a switch to a switch? so my network would look like this

Router ---- Switch ---- Switch - - - - computer connected wirelessly

primary reason for doing this is i want to bring the wireless router closer to the middle of my house... some areas are getting really weak signals..

Sincerely,
networkingNoob

A:Switch to Switch Connection?

You could do that, but why not just get a longer network cable? Ethernet on Cat-5e is good up to 100m.

I am in the process of setting up a pretty extensive gigabit network in my home. I have the new D-Link DIR-655 Pre-N Router with four gigabit ports and I am using all four to run to 8-port D-Link unmanaged switches in four locations. The first location is right next to the router. I have a fifth location. I searched hard for an 8-port wired gigabit router. If I had found one (at a reasonable price) I would use it as the base in from the modem then use the D-Link for wireless only (no routing). Alas ... I was unable to find one and so I am wondering if there are any issues running from a switch to another switch.

A:Router to switch to switch?

Only issue is a slight impariment in speed as it passes thru two switches and the router . . You may not be able to decerne it.

Hello ,

When I ran Windows 98, I was constantly rebooting and always switched the whole system off at the end of the day.

What are the pros and cons of leaving Windows 2000 on indefinitely?
Also, will this affect the wear of my monitor? Should that be switched off separately and the system left running?

Win2K is certainly very much more stable than 98, and hasn't crashed since I had it installed.

Pentium III
Win 2K
480 MB RAM
550 cpu

(I am looking to upgrade motherboard and videa card, etc. as soon as funds are available.)

Thanks for any thoughts you may have.

My question is, is there are performance increase? What is the downfall of bundling the two devices? What is the upside?
