Yesturday my vista was working great, and on the screen as i went to shut it down said "updating files do not shut down computer 3/3 100%" but it stayed like that for 4 hours, so i turn it off manualy once i turned it back on the next day it asked me for my password i put it in and as it was loading it was vey slow and would take 5-6 minutes for programs to load up.

Also when i go to click on like my internet it dont work, not even my games work, they try to load then freeze. So i did a scan on it and its still having this problem. After i got frustrated i went to shut it down again and it says "logging off" but stays like that for hours, so i have to manualy turn it off. Now with internet issue, it works in safe mode with connection, but not in my normal screen. WHY IS THIS DOING THIS?

None of my games will work. I took some advice of a forum because I couldnt get Perfect World to work and changed something in the registry to do with the port. Now no game will work and i would change it back but i dont know what it was previously.
My system restores wont work, wont even undo, and theres only one days worth there now. I dont know how to do a utilities reg scan which I think may be what I need to do, I dont know if its in my pc or on my XP disk. I cant use the disk because I dont know how to find my product code and the person I bought it off has gone to Cyprus .

I've done a Drwebcureit but really I need instructions for a 2 year old and I think this has happened since my last one. I had a Win32 Trojan in the other day and Vundo got rid of it I think, maybe its got something to do with that, maybe its still lurking around. Ive done a Combofix amd this was at the top - WARNING -THIS MACHINE DOES NOT HAVE THE RECOVERY CONSOLE INSTALLED. If anyone can help me, you would save my life, its driving me mad now.

hello and to start off i'd like to thank anyone who takes time to read this and try to help me out, thank you.

I'm running win xp sp2.

On July 1st an infected file was downloaded and run. AVG and Winpatrol noticed this and prompted the user to take action. The user checked to block all changes that the infected file tried to make, and deleted the file. Then music started to come from the speakers. All kinds of completly random stuff that is not installed on the computer. In task manager there was a file "c.exe" after ending this process the music stopped and it never came back. I don't know if it is related, but the next day the computer started to have problems.

Gaim 99% of the time hangs and timeouts when trying to connect a screen name. I do not have a firewall and windows one is disabled.

To get firefox to work, i had to open the browser, it wouldnt appear on screen but the process showed in task manager. Then i used task manager to end the process tree. Then when i opened the browser it would open but run slowly. This no longer works. Now when i click to open it nothing happens and the process does not show up in task manager.

Internet explorer works fine and that is what i'm using to write this. The computer was also having this overall lag with everything i'd try to do on it. Ex: open the start menu, open folders, etc. However as of this last computer restart, not that i've done anything to fix it, the computer runs at normal spe... Read more

I changed my WPA password recently and have had no problem until tonight when I tried to connect for the first time on the windows 7 partition on my MacBook. It finds the network but when I try to connect it doesn't ask for the password, it just tries to connect and then comes up connection error and sends me to the useless troubleshooter.
How do I tell it the password has changed?

A:Changed WPA and can' connect

Probably by deleting the wireless profile. Else disable encryption on the router, connect the MacBook, re-enable encryption, and then reconnect.

Hi,
I have been having this problem for quite some time now. I cant download any updates and it says that i'm using a proxy or behind a firewall.

The error code is 8024402C

I have gone through all the steps mentioned in the Microsoft site and also in numerous other sites to identify the cause of the problem and nothing seems to work.

Also my Limewire, Bit comet and other p2p s/w's have stopped connecting for some reason. I'm not sure if all these problems are related to each other.

Can anyone tell me what to do?

Our family computer is randomly having trouble connecting to the internet when loading some web pages or web pages wont load. I occasionally have the same problem with my laptop but never at the same time. Which leads me to believe it is not likely my router. Would that be correct? My wife plays alot of games from Yahoo Games. Could that be a source of some of the problems?

I have some of the tools I believe will be needed to clean the system loaded to my desktop ready to go. I need some direction to be sure I don't go out of order and cause a bigger problem.

Thank you

Hi, I have 10Mbit/s download and 1Mbit/s upload speeds. My ISP offered me to change for free to Optical Fiber, so I accepted. They came and changed my white modem:
by this Optical Fiber "pack", a modem and a gadget that I think send the modem the optical fiber signal:

So here, my first questions is:

1. Why the new black modem has 2 antennas? Does that mean that it has DUAL band and can work with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz?

2. The power of the signal (how far can I connect to it) is better because is "new" hardware and it has 2 antennas? Or it's probably the same?
3. Now, my REAL issue. I have a laptop, Windows 8.1 x64, and an Intel Wireless-N 7260. I also have a router in one of my rooms, connected to the modem via PLC (power line communication). I can ONLY connect to my modem if I'm in the same modem's room. If I go to the next room (less than 5m) when trying to connect, Windows says that "It can't connect to this network". I have another laptop with Windows 7 and it can connect from that room and from the opposite room of my house with no problem.

So something's wrong with my laptop, laptop's antenna, new modem, drivers... or something.

I've updated also my WiFi card drivers. And if I'm in the router's or modem's room, the connection is great (not always). As the problem could be the new drivers, I've tried out some different versions:

-With the original drivers, it works better, but even sometimes it disconnects.

-With drivers 16.0XXXX... Read more

A:My ISP has changed my modem, now W8.1 can't connect well

You do not have to load any software to connect to that Gateway. You just need to find the SSID that the Gateway's Wifi is transmitting and enter the Passphrase, which is usually on the label on the bottom of the unit.

As for two antennas. Just allows for better connections with the unit. Has nothing to do with if it is a Dual or Single band unit.

As for the speed. When you made the change. Your ISP installer should have gone through all of this with you.

Are you sure you have matched ram and the right ram for that motherboard, might try booting with just one stick of ram installed. Next are you sure all the spacers went in while installing the motherboard, are the ram and motherboard compatible.

My PC was configured as follows:

Motherboard:
IDE 1 - Main HDD1 (Master) / DVD R/W (Slave)
IDE 2 - CD ROM (Master) / CD R/W (Slave)

Everything worked fine, I could play CD's DVD's etc..

I purchased a second HDD to increase storage capacity on my PC and so Changed my configuration to as follows:

Motherboard:
IDE 1 - Main HDD1 (Master) / No Slave Fitted
IDE 2 - Secondary HDD (Master) / No Slave Fitted
PCI Ver. 2.3 Slot - Added an ULTRA 133 TX2 Controller Card (To allow upto 4 devices additional to be run)
IDE 3 - CD ROM (Master) / CD R/W (Slave)
IDE 4 - DVD R/W (Master) / No Slave Fitted

Since making these changes I can no longer play DVD's through windows media player 9. I get an error code C00D1163, which when investigated tells me that I now need to purchase DVD decoder software

Why should a change in configuration mean I need to buy more software?..

Any Ideas / fixes would be greatly appreciated...

I recentlly had a problem with my PC where when i turned it on the HDD light would just stay on and nothing would start or come up on screen (no beeps but all fans started). I purchased a new CPU (same model and speeds) to see if that was the problem and it still did it so i got a new motherboard (same model) and again still nothing. I changed the power supply with another i have on a PC i KNOW works and its STILL the same. I even used the power switch out of the other PC as well as trying with no ram and different ram but STILL the same problem. I dont understand how that can be possible when EVER part is different from that of what is in the computer. No HDD or sata or IDE drives were connected, no cards or anything but still the thing wont start.

New/different motherboard
New/different CPU
Different Ram
Different case & power switch
NO other cards or devices

So WHY is there STILL the same problem ????????

The stats of the PC are as follows

AMD Sempron 3000+
Asus K8V-VM Motherboard
1GB DDR400 Ram

Any help would be VERY much appreciated because i am COMPLETELY stumped on what the problem is when ALL the parts are different and i cant afford to be spending any more money on the system.

Recently I was trying to change my unsecured wireless modem connect to a secured using my HP Compaq 6230.

This is my personal home laptop.

There were no directions as it was an old modem. I found a download for my model hoping if I upgraded it I would be able to secure it. During the upgrade, I believed in the process I changed an IP address of my computer. Ever since I can't get on the internet.

I have a wireless set up. I can get on the internet fine with my other laptop. I went through some trouble shooting with Verizon which is whom I have my DSL with and did a couple tests. They told me for some reason my computer can't get out from the modem to the internet. But, I am able to connect to my wireless modem from the computer. And, I have tried a couple other unsecured wireless in the area and I cannot connect to those either.

When I try to go on the internet through IE

on the bottom of the window I see an error message flash that says:

I clicked on the diagnose connection problem and then ran the test to no avail.

When I went to- View last diagnostic log, this is the errors I got:

Hi all,

My internet connection is as such:
ISP MODEM-->RJ45 cable-->Router-->Laptop(running on Vista) & PC (runnning on XP)

I can't home from work today, my dad had already switched off the PC after gg online.
I switch on the laptop and found that i can't access the internet.
So i power off the router and modem altogether and power them on.

However i still can't connect to the internet. And now both my PC and Laptop can't access internet.
It is showing as "connected" to the router but apparently i can't access the internet.

So i was wondering if it is the modem or the router that is faulty so i disconnect the RJ45 cable tat is connected to the router and plug it straight to my laptop. I can access internet (that's how i can type here).

So i figure the modem and the line is okay. So the router must be faulty. Well, so i went out and bought a new router and replaced it. But i still couldn't access the internet.

I'm puzzled. If the modem/line/router is not spoilt, what is wrong with my internet connection if nothing has been modified?

Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

The old router is TP-link brand TL-WR740N and the new one is Aztech WL852RT-4.

A:Changed out a router but still cant connect to the internet. Pls help!

Who is your ISP? What modem are they using?

Some ISPs require that the device connected to the modem (router's WAN port, or laptop) be registered with your account... a new router might need to be registered. If the connection was once set up with your laptop directly connected, that would explain why it works. The router may have been set up at one point to "clone" the laptop's hardware address, so the ISP would see a recognized device.

With the router (either one) connected to the modem, try going into its settings, look up the WAN status, and see what it gives you for a WAN IP.

It booted up and ran fine but after 3 times hitting the power switch. After I shut it down, it will not boot now. When you press the power switch, the led will light but then the computer will immediately lose power. Then nothing if you press the power switch again (unless I unplug and replug the computer in). Sometimes the fan and LED will stay on for about 5 seconds before losing power. What could be causing this? Power supply? power switch?

Our last router seemed to be having problems so my roommate got a new one from Time Warner as a replacement. All of our other roommates had no problem at all when reconnecting to the new router. There are 4 of us, but any given time there may only be two of us using the internet....very seldom all 4 are home at the same time. The only computer having a problem happens to be mine and the only machine with Vista on it.

One of my roommates changed the router while I was away from my notebook which was running and connected to the internet at the time he made the switch. I don't know if this was the cause for all my troubles in the last week trying to figure out why I can't get back online, but I had no problems with the other router except for the signal dropping too low even when we were within a couple of feet of it. There were no changes made on my end nor did anyone else have to make any changes to their computers other than connecting with the new password. I often take my netbook with me and have connected to hundreds of other networks without a problem until this recent change. I can still log onto other wireless networks, but just not to our home wireless network .

See below for all the computer stats and ipconfig info. I recently un-installed Norton Internet Security and installed Panda IS 2008. Afterwards I can no longer connect wirelessly...it gets stuck on acquiring network address. A second laptop (using Vista) connects to the network just fine. I can use a wired connection to the router on the affected laptop. I can also connect to a neighbor's network. I put the network card to Secure Zone in Panda.

I use MAC filtering on the router, but this network card is allowed. The other weird thing though is that I cannot get any computer to sign in to the router any longer, using any connection (wireless or wired)...it never pulls up the login, it just hangs there. (Even though the other laptop is connected to the network on that router wirelessly, and working.)

I'm thinking I need to reset the router and set it all up again, but I don't want to still be locked out afterwards. I tried unplugging it and restarting but that didn't work.

Any ideas? Let me know what other info you need. Thanks

Now my internet works, but when I went to my D-view cam (this is where the daily footage is stored for security camera DCS-930L), I can't make the connection. It says COM1 is not working.

I know the camera works through the wireless router, but somehow the connection between the camera and the D-view cam doesn't. What do I need to do to get this working again?

Then I tried changing the subnet mask through lan settings in ipv4 by connecting the Ethernet cable but still no internet n no connection to the modem settings page as well.

I'm guessing the problem is, as my isp uses dynamic ip n while changing the subnet mask, the ip address also has to be set in windows n that sets my modem to static ip mode.

To make things worse there isn't a reset button in modem as well!

now I'm all out of ideas guys..
any help will be much appreciated!

I followed the instructions on this page: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/hosts-files-explained/
I renamed my hosts file "hosts.orig", downloaded, unzipped, and saved another hosts file from http://hosts-file.net/?s=Download, named HOSTS in the same place as the original. After that, I couldn't connect to the internet at home or at the library. I tried deleting the "new" hosts file that I downloaded, in order to put things back to how they used to be, but any time I try to do something to the "HOSTS" file I get a pop up saying: "The action can't be completed because the file is open in Cryptographic Services.... close the file and try again" which doesn't work.
I tried stopping the DNS thing, but that only worked for about 5 minutes. I restarted the computer because it was slowing down, and the DNS thing restarted itself, and the internet disconnected again. HELP PLEASE
EDIT: I try stopping it, but an error message saying "Windows could not stop the DNS client service on local computer. error 1053: the service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion"

A:Changed Hosts file, cannot connect to internet HELP

Why did you look at the hosts file in the first place?
Assume you are running windows 7 because you are in this forum.

You may not even have a hosts file in Windows 7.
Typical location is: C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\

You do NOT need a hosts file.

If one exists it can look like this for Win7: [ NOTE: all lines are commented out ]

# Copyright © 1993-2006 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

# localhost name resolution is handle within DNS itself.
# 127.0.0.1 localhost
# ::1 localhost
Not sure what you downloaded and you can confirm the above directory is where you put it.
But deleting the downloaded one is suggested and leave the original one .orig.

Maybe safe mode will allow you to delete it - make sure you have admin "elevated" rights.

I just built a new HTPC, put Windows 8.1 on it, had RDP working fine for days. Even out of my house with port forwarding. Once I got everything where I wanted it, the last step was to change the port for security. I changed the registry Port Number (at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, SYSTEM, CurrentControlSet, Control, Terminal Server, WinStations and RDP-Tcp), to a 5 digit number starting with 13 so its within the limits (also, I used to use the same port previously with Windows 7). Restarted and I could not connect. It did not work. So I tried putting it back to 3389 and its broken now too. I have a laptop on 8.1 also and changed it at the same time, now I have the same issues. I have tried everything I can think of. Check and even turned off the Firewall, used netstat -a and it seems to be listening on the correct port.
It seems to me there is something else at play here. Can anyone help me? This is at a bad time since I have leaving town for a few days and need access, I have to use VNC.
Help please.

FYI, I posted this exact same question here and have gone through some diagnostic steps to no avail: https://social.technet.microsoft.com...c-c24c20f3b2e7

Sadly I had to join here due to a problem with my 2 week old win 7 64 install.

I'm not sure what the trigger was but my C drive where my os is installed apparently took the drive letter of an external drive that I use for backup. It is now the X drive and I cannot boot. I do get the repair screen but cannot repair as there is no operating system to choose. Booting from windows disk makes no difference here.

My bios (uefi) can see the disk, I can also see it from the command prompt, Im at a loss what to do, any help is appreciated.

I believe this happened after an automatic windows update.

I sure need your help on this! lol. I have a home built computer. It is about 6 years old.
The OS is XP Pro, 2 gig of Memory, 200gig WD hard drive, Asus P5AD2 Premium Motherboard. Here is my problem. I replaced the Power Supply that was in it. I replaced it with a Zalman Heatpipe Cooled 600 Watt Power Supply. All I did, is unplug the old PS, and remove it, then, put in the new one, replugged it, turned on my computer and it acts like
it is going to come up... the PS fan is running, a green led light on the motherboard is on, but nothing shows up on the monitor. The monitor power is on, and I have checked the monitor connection to the compter and it has a good connection. So, I thought maybe the new PS was defective or something, so I decided to just put the old power supply back in it, because it was running just fine before, I only wanted to replace it because it was kinda noisey and I wanted a quieter one. After putting the old Power Supply back in, I powered up the computer and it now is doing the exact same thing that the new Power Supply did. The computer lights and fans are all working but nothing is showing on the monitor. I checked to make sure that the cable and power hookup on the hard drive that has the OS on it is connected good, and it is. I am lost on what to do next. I hope someone here can help me please.
Thanks very much,
gramcurl

Hi

I have been incredibly stupid and changed the settings in my BIOS setup. What is even more stupid is I did this by making it "Load Optimal Defaults" so I dont actually know what has been changed.

As a result of this windows 7 now cannot start, it brings you to the error fixing part where it searches for errors, cant find any and offers you some more options including system restore. Ive done a system restore but that has also not fixed it. I have little idea how to fix this, windows 7 was working perfectly until I changed the BIOS, but not knowing what was changed means I cant change it back.

The BIOS version is: 4core1600twins-p35 p1.40

Any help would be immensely appreciated. Thank you very much!

Rhodri

A:Changed BIOS settings now Windows 7 wont start

Hi Rhodri and welcome to Windows 7 Forums

This should be quite easy to fix. All you need to do is to reset the BIOS to its defaults. Boot up and enter your BIOS. You are looking for an option to reset it to its defaults (this is NOT the same as Optimal Defaults). Alternatively, remove and replace the motherboard battery - this will cause all settings to be lost from the BIOS, so you need to make a note of your current settings on a piece of paper so that you can restore them afterwards. This will include the date and time. For details on how to do this, the location of the battery and whether or not there is a motherboard jumper that accomplishes the same thing, see your motherboard manual. Please ensure that your system is unplugged from the mains whilst you do this.

Hi,I was convinced that I was compromised by a virus. My ewido anti-spyware said it found a Dialer.Generic but my Trend Micro Internet Security 2005 didnt find it nor did anything else I had find anything. So I decided to use a well trusted online virus scanner (wont mention who because what happened to me may be completely unrelated to using it & I dont want others to not use it fearing the same results). In order to use this online scanner I had to download & install it via Active X. I had completely setup my security to NOT download any Active X whatsoever, so I had to change my IE settings to allow the ActiveX installation. Well, the installation was completely successful & it did find & disinfect a few very low-risk infections which I knew about--but wasnt conserned with. So, I decided after reading a few other related topics, & the results from the online scan didnt find this Dialer.Generic, I wasnt so concerned about this dialer found by ewido. Besides, I dont use my modem since migrating to Satellite Broadband.I therefore decided to reboot my computer. Well all hell broke loose!! I couldnt reboot to my XP OS! Not even in Safe Mode!! Fortunately I have a dual OS boot system installed, so I booted to Windows 98 -- successfully. I went directly to Windows Explorer to check my XP OS drive only to find that the previously assigned drive letters on a few of my drives had been somehow reassigned!!! My XP OS drive let... Reinstalling it would probably do the trick, or you can try Tweak UI:

Install it > open it > on the left, click on Repair > on the right make sure Rebuild Icons is selected, and click on Repair Now (Note: this will repair "all" of your icons, not just meessenger)

Is pretty much the same problem that i am having. none of my exes will open and all my shortcuts got change to .lnk and don't work. my friend was using my computer when this happened, lol, but i think it has something to do with spyware and adaware messing up or something.

It seems that in the previous post JSntgRvr fixed their problem, but i'm having trouble fallowing it. I was wondering if you guys could post some kind of step by step fix.

thanks for the time

Hello, my name is Brandon. I'm new to this forum. I'm having the exact same problems as another member named Chris. forums.techguy.org/t307784.html I tried to follow the instructions layed out in that thread but have encountered some problems. I believe that I've removed all the viruses from my computer but all of my shortcuts are still showing lnk extensions. I was able to run a full scan using adware plus.

The next step on the thread says to download the EXEFIX08.reg file and add it to the registry.

1). How do I "Rename the extension from TXT to REG and double click to add it to the registry"? I've tried but have been unsuccessful. When I download the file, it opens either as an html document or in wordpad. I'm not sure how to rename an extension in wordpad. Can you please explain how I can do this?

Also, I would appreciate some more clarification on this statement "Before doing this, run Explorer, Tools, Folder Options, View Tab and ensure that Hide Extensions of know file types is UNselected."

Hi everyone...So we just switched from Verizon FiOS to Time Warner Cable for our internet today. The technician that came in was able to configure all the devices in our house (2 laptops and 3 cell phones) and have no problems. My wife's Toshiba Satellite however is unable to connect to the new network. I am able to see it and enter the password. It tries to connect for ~15 seconds and errors out with "Unable to connect to ____(network name)"

I searched around a few of the other issues that were similar to mine here and so I've tried using the Net Adapter Repair tool along with manually resetting my TCP/IP stack and deleting all the other wireless profiles that the computer has stored. Still no luck after doing all that and rebooting, then trying to reconnect.

Any help or thoughts you guys could give would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Phil

I have a Linksys E2500 that I installed DD-WRT on. I went into the settings and changed the address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.15.3, unfortunately when I try to connect to it I can't connect. I am trying to figure out how to reset it back to the default settings but holding the reset button for 10-20 seconds didn't help.

I posted the ipconfig logs for when I am plugged into the router with my wifi off. I usually have my wifi on my laptop that I use to connect to my other router.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. The router was working great until I changed the IP address

A:Solved: Changed IP address on DD-WRT router, and am unable to connect.

There's some kind of problem with getting a dynamic connection. Could be that the router's Dhcp server is disabled, or a defective cable, or a problem with the computer. Try assigning a static IP to your ethernet connection (e.g., 192.168.15.11), mask 255.255.255.0, and see if you can access the router.

Hello,

This issue already happened in Consumer Preview of Windows 8, but after installing the Release Preview I still see this.
I have a WeTab 32GB tablet to run Windows 8.

After installing Windows 8 CP I had to install Mobile Partner software in order to connect to 3G. After connecting once the connection showed up in the "Networks" part of the "Settings" charm. Is was shown as a broadband connection. Tapping it once enabled me to connect and check the box to connect automatically. If I choose the "Properties" I was able to set it as a metered connection. This all happened in the Metro UI.
If I went to the "Wireless" tab of the "PC Settings" the connection was showing up as "Mobile Broadband" device.

For some reason (I am not sure what changed) at some point I don't see the connection in the "Wireless" tab of the "PC settings" anymore. Next to that the icon in the "Networks" charm has changed (it shows a phone). Tapping it once only enables me to connect. Tap and hold to view the connection properties sends me to the classic Windows desktop where a classic properties screen is being displayed.

I am not able to select to connect automatically.

I was hoping this would have changed after installing the Release Preview. But after doing so and installing the Mobile Partner software it automatically included my settings. So I still have this issue. How can I change this back?

Can anyone help?

My son decided to update our router firmware, together with this the password was changed. My computer which hosts the Internet connection works fine, all other laptops have now been connected successfully after simply changing the password. However my wifes laptop won't play ball. It is a Samsung R510, with Vista Home Premium OS. It worked fine prior to updating the firmware. I have been through the process of changing the password and have the correct security encryption in place, exactly the same process as with the other laptops. It then says successfully connected, but shows in the bottom right of the screen, Unidentified network access local only and will not connect when the browser is opened. I have tried to diagnose but the usual windows prompt to reboot both modem and router has no effect. I have set it to private, as advised elsewhere, I have switched the firewall off and removed security software, all to no avail.

From another post in this forum I tried the command prompt, then ipconfig/renew. The result of that was the following message:

An error occurred while renewing interface Wireless Connection: unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out. No operation can be performed on Local Area Connection while it has media disconnected.

Not sure if that information helps anybody. So any help much appreciated. Let me stress that no changes were made to the laptop at all, it is simply not connecting following the firmware update a... Read more

I have a slightly different setup so I'm hoping somebody might have some suggestions on what I can try.

I have Comcast Xfinity Internet and a Motorola SB6121 model - have all worked great for years no problems.

I have the modem in my garage with a wifi router and a router for various rooms in my house. My home computer is in an office and previously I had a wired connection that worked great.

I changed wifi router to a new Netgear and the internet connection from the modem is working, the wifi is working, but my home computers ethernet connection will no longer connect...

Any thoughts on what to try other than powering off and on model / routers / computer which I have tried?

Mike

A:Changed wifi router, now ethernet doesnt connect - Win 8.1

You can only have one router on your network. For extending coverage, you use Access Points

As for the Ethernet problem, go back and double check your connections to the router.

If you cascaded routers in what are called "Edge Routers". Changing your first router, without any changes on the others can be why you only have a connection to one router and not out to the Internet.

It is really easier to show someone what they did wrong, then explain on a forum.

Evening all !

This is is driving me bonkers !

I recently changed the wireless access password on my BT Infinity router and disconnected every device - including 4 phones, 2 iPads a laptop and an aging Vista PC.

I've changed all the passwords on all the devices and they all connect again to the hub under the new password - except the PC !

The PC connects via a Belkin USB adapter.
The wireless network appears - highlight, click connect - says getting information from BTHub, eventually asks for the password - enter my new password - and immediately get Windows cannot connect.

Things I've tried :

Rebooted BTHub
Rebooted PC (several times)
Control Panel > Network and sharing centre > Manage Wireless Networks  and deleted network profiles.
Deleted the USB adapter and reinstalled.

The Belkin device is working OK as I can connect to an non-secure BT Hotspot on the PC and it's blue light flashes (as normal) when communicating with the BTHub.

Any advice greatly appreciated - this is the Old machine I've dedicated to the kids for You Tube etc. - they ain't happy !!!!!!!!!

Many thanks

I have a dlink router that previously had a WEP password set, and at that time our Macbook Pro laptop was connecting fine. I decided to change the network name and change password security to WPA2 (instead of the WEP) and I made the network name "hidden." After doing this the main computer (IMac) and a PC are still connecting fine, but now the macbook laptop won't connect. I have typed the new network name and the new WPA2 password on the macbook pro in Network Diag., but still won't connect. It is seeing the new network name, and I know I am typing the correct new password, but the macbook pro won't connect. Interestingly, if I unplug the router and plug it back in, the macbook pro will then connect fine, but only for a brief time. Later in the evening, it can't find the connection again! I hope someone here could pls help me. Thanks in advance.

I have a basic home network system that includes an HP Pavilion Slimline processor desktop, an HP Pavilion g6 laptop and an old Toshiba Satellite laptop. The Toshiba has Windows XP, the HPs have Windows 7. The network is set up with the desktop as the access point for the router. The router is a Netgear WGR614v6. The Toshiba wifi connects, but Iím having trouble connecting the HP laptop. When I attempt to connect to the secure Netgear network, it tells me Wi-Fi is disconnected. (No trouble connecting to "linksys" open system) Iíve tried several approaches to connect via suggestions in Google and also the Network Setup Wizard provided by Netgear (for Windows XP system) with no success.

I have the Network Summary information including the Wireless Passphrase, Admin Username, and Admin Password. I also have the Wireless Network Settings from Netgear. So what am I doing wrong? Disable encryption and MAC Address filtering on the router and try to connect. If successful you can probably re-enable encryption and reconnect.

It started out because i wanted to get IE 7 running with IE 6 for some web design testing.

Originally i had IE 7 installed and working fine, i decided to downgrade to IE 6 and copy it. Once i had copied all the IE 6 files i upgraded back to IE 7, but now IE 7 wont connect, it just kind of seems to refresh.

When i run the Diagnostics it says:-

"Windows has detected a problem with the Winsock provider catalog on this computer." etc

But even when i tell IE to fix it and restart, same thing happens.

Anyone know what the problem is or how to fix it?

At the moment i'm using Firefox and could well stick with it, but i need IE 7 back, for, as mentioned earlier, web design testing.

Any help is greatly appreciated

PS. When i downgrade to IE6 i can connect to pages, its only when i upgrade back to IE7

A:IE7 wont connect to anything

Sorry i managed to fix it.

It would seem that because zone alarm WASN'T running and my firewall was defaulted to windows firewall. I think that windows firewall was blocking IE (lmfao at MS), so when i switched zone alarm on, it worked absolutely fine

Two laptops connect fine to the wireless, and internet is perfect.

Desktop will connect to the wireless, has internet but whenever you try and open a page it tries to use an old dialer setting. My uncle recently used the PC and is a complete moron, so not sure what he has deleted.

I believe he installed AOL, then removed it however.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Odd problem here. I can get my email, but for some reason my browser will not let me go to interne sites. I tried resetting I.E. version 11, but no luck. It keeps saying..UNABLE TO OPEN WWW.BING.COM, no connection, etc. I tried uninstalling, and re-installing..I tried running the Microsoft program for repair called FIXIT, still no luck. I have Windows 7, 64 bit. I even switched the CAT cable....no difference. Any ideas on why I cannot go on the internet, but still able to get mail?

A:I.E. 11 wont connect

Check to make sure your browser is not using a proxy server. To check this follow these steps:

1. Open Control Panel
2. Go to Internet Options
3. Click Connections tab
4. Click LAN Settings button
5. IF there is a check mark in "Use Proxy Server" un-check it and try to browse the web.

If this does not work let us know.

Ok, I have a friends Gateway laptop with XP. I hook it up through my ethernet connection from my desktop. I get the little icon in the taskbar with the exclamation mark in it. It says limited or no connectivity and brings up a blank page in explorer. I looked in the device manager and it says the ethernet is installed and working properly.
I have even tried the ipconfig/release, /renew trick and it times out on the /renew portion. I unplugged the modem when I switched it over for a min or so. But when I plugged it back into my desktop it connected right away. Any ideas??? Thanks....

Can anyone shed some light on to why i am not able to use a usb modem on my new Dell XPS i7 Machine. i am in the mountains of Spain so all i have is Dial up. I first tried a cheap usb modem on my machine as there are only express slots in it. ruling out an internal one. This didn't work. So thinking it was the cheap modem i bought this US Robotics 5637 fitted it checked all settings with my internal modem in my other machine that workd fine but still no joy. both usb modems i have tried are all v92 and my isp uses v90 but they are backward compatible anyway so there should be no problem there.
I get the normal couple of bleeps then it starts with the usual noise talking normally it would do this for maybe 15-20 sec's then stop and wait for a reply but not with these usb modems they just carry on until it will eventually time out and errors with the error 678 the remote computer did not respond. it did exactly the same with the cheap usb modem. So i am at a loss as to what to do next i have checked all the settings with the working machine but with no luck they are both set up exactly the same. The only difference is that its now a usb modem i am trying it with. the modem is installed correctly and there are no issues with it that way. all drivers are in correctly it just will not talk to my isp which is telefonica spain.

post an ipconfig /all

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.

Hello imsooblonde,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

First try unplugging the power to your router, next to where the power chord plugs into the router there should be a small "reset" button, grab a pencil or pen and press and hold it for 5 - 10 seconds to make sure it resets. Then plug it back in and see if it works.

Hi everyone

Problem - Frostwire won't connect - always has before

What I have tried and checked on - I have searched the net and here in this forum, I have down loaded a fresh copy and installed Frostwire after uninstalling the previous version, have also uninstalled Java and reinstalled, (this is some of the suggestions when I searched on the net)

All other programs that connect to the net on my computer, do connect with no problem,

I have checked the Windows Firewall that I use, and it is ticked in exceptions, I re-entered it into exceptions.

I rang my Internet provider just to double check they they don't have blocks in place I had a vague memory of them wanting bringing in a thing to put blocks on and you and you actually had to ring them to unblock certain things, they where talking about bringing in this sort of thing did not know if it had happened, so I rang to check, there is no blocks or limitations on my account.

Changes I have made to my computer since Frostwire last used - The only different thing about my computer (as its been a while since I used Frostwire) is that I have changed from connecting to Cable via Wifi to Connecting via Wifi to a 3G Wireless modem/router (same as a mobile - in this country anyway) and I have updated Office 2003 to Office 2007 they are the only changes I have made other than the Antivirus updating automatically, I have also done a Microsoft update when I installed Office 2007.

Is this a wired or wireless connection ?
Did this ever work and if so what changed(hardware/software) ?

Generally, what we suggest when everything works in safe mode,is to go into your statrup list in msconfig and start disabling small groups of starting tasks until you can make a network connection in normal mode
.While you do that
let's see in normal mode, what your pc see's as it's environment,:

Im running a Samsung X60 laptop with Windows XP. It has a Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection card.

The problem I am having is that a few days ago the laptop wouldnt connect to the office network or my home hub. Neither hub has any security restrictions and the laptop always used to connect fine. I have tried unplugging the hub and also I have checked that the wireless card is fully enabled.

When I search for wireless networks the laptop doesnt pick up any. This is especially confusing as at home I have a desktop connected via Wireless and that works just fine.

I have a TCM MP3 Player. Quite standard, 128 MB memory device. The booklet says it should appear in MY COMPUTER as REMOVABLE DEVICE upon connecting it via USB (supplied) but it does not appear. The booklet says the necessary drivers should already be on XP as I am on, the CD supplied is only needed for Windows 98 SE. I have put this CD to try anyway, but its a load of random files I dont know what to do with. Windows Media Player 10 has looked for the device, and ADD HARDWARE does not find it, or in the list of devices it gives (20+) it is not clear if its there.
The back of the box says USB UNIVERSAL SERIAL BUS.

The website on the box is Tchibo.co.uk but its a standard store, and I cant find anything on it on there, or the web. I dont know why it wont appear, what the problem is, if I need a driver, how, where to get one (standard or otherwise) or anything.

PLEASE HELP!!!

A:TCM MP3 player wont connect to PC

Mine does the same thing because my USB ports are not working currrently. I am still trying to get them up and I took the mp3 player to work and successfully downloaded some music so if I were you I would make sure that your USB ports are working correclty. Good luck.

Iexplorer will not connect. just get the following message:
Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

What you can try:
It appears you are connected to the Internet, but you might want to try to reconnect to the Internet.

Retype the address.

Go back to the previous page.

Most likely causes:
?You are not connected to the Internet.
?The website is encountering problems.
?There might be a typing error in the address.

But I can connect via Firefox. The main problem is that i cant update programs, reporting cant connect to server. This also happens when installing new progs that require further files. Any suggestions Many thanks

I'm trying to tether my HTC Droid Eris to my laptop. I'm rooted, have the program, and have tested it on other computers. It works flawlessly every time on friends laptops, but never once on mine..

My computer (vista, 64x) will sort of connect, it will say connected on the choose network screen, but nothing shows in network and sharing folder. My phone will show 4kb transfer (slowly at like .2kbps) and stop. Never more or less, even if my computer reconnects.

This is a computer problem rather than phone because I know my hotspot (phone) works. As I said it works on any other computer except mine. any help is greatly appreciated.

Have no idea why I can't connect to the internet anymore. I had some sort of google redirect that I got rid of via malware removal programs. After I did this, it took out my internet as well.

Have done all the resets, tried system restore, deleted and reinstalled Ethernet driver, plugged modem into laptop and that is not the problem, nor is the wire. IPconfig /all did not work;
"An internal error occured: The request is not supported.
Please contact Microsoft...
Additional Information: Unable to Query Host name"

I am at the point where I just want to reinstall everything and maybe upgrade to Win. 7 but if there is a fix, rather do that first. Please Help! Thanks.

What did not work about ipconfig? I Assume your tried this in the Command Prompt? What was the error message?
You are probably still infected. Due to Forum rules we cannot discuss Malware removal here. Please click on the link in my signature for Virus/Malware Help, do those things and post in that section of the forum for more help.

guys

this is doing my head in <replaced by Moderator - ETAF> now!

Got a sky hub, its new and everything connects to it, all be it but one tower, it can find it and now and again it may conect with no or limited etc etc

had the same problem with our last internet hub (BT) so its defo the computer as we also changed the Netgear USB adapter to a different tower unit and it connected, so it isnt the Sky hub and it isnt the wireless dongle.

computer is running vista, i have disabled the security and it didnt work, i have uninstalled and reinstalled the software for the usb dongle a hundred times.

it did once connect to the net this morning in my many attempts of fiddling and after the computer restarted it wont anymore.
