Solved: DHCP Server -> Switch -> Switch -> Wireless

Q: Solved: DHCP Server -> Switch -> Switch -> Wireless

Hi everyone, I searched through the forums but couldn't really find what I was looking for.

Currently we have a DHCP server set up to a switch, that has a special line connecting to a switch in our shop which is just across our back lot, giving network access to the few computers over there. They recently put in a new machine that needs network access, but they have already accidentally cut two ethernet cords. I'm looking to provide a wireless solution for the machine, but I don't want to have to spend a few thousand dollars on a large wireless switch.

Can I plug a wireless router into the switch in our shop, and essentially turn it into a wireless bridge, or is there another, simpler way to do this?

If this has already been answered, sorry for missing it!

Thanks!

While you could use a router, or even configure the router to act as an access point, why not just buy a true access point? They start at $27: http://www.newegg.com/Store/SubCate...ame=Wireless-AP-Bridges-Repeaters&Order=PRICE

Hi,

I've recently set up a new office area in our home and hard wired 4 ethernet network points in it. I have been running a Netgear 4 port wireless broadband router in the kid's study and this has worked without fault.

I ran a cat5 cable to the router from the office. I have plugged in a Netgear 5 port switch (FS605) into this cable to connect the office (there appears to be no identified uplink port). I run at present both a Mac and PC laptop form the office.

Proble I have is the Mac will retrieve its IP address without fault from the router (DHCP set) 192.168.0.4 but the PC comes back with a strange, 169.254.17.186, IP address and says it has limited or no connectivity. All cables test perfectly.

I am pulling my hair out. If I plug the PC directly into the cable from the router all is fine but when I put the switch between them the issues start. So the issues seems to be with the switch or the set up on the Laptop. It is currently set to DHCP. I have tried to overide that with a manual IP and subnet mask address setting - without luck.

Should I be using a router rather than a switch? But if so why will the Mac work fine?

Any help or hints would be greatly appreciated.

Steve

I have Windows 7 Professional on my PC. In the first load I had, the PC should automatically detect if the LAN cable was plugged in, turn off the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable was now in use.
Unfortunately, I had to reload my PC, and since then I can't get it to do it again.
So, what I'd like to achieve is this: Have Windows automatically detect when the cable is plugged in, turn of the wireless radio, and change the network icon in the right bottom corner to reflect the cable is in use - and, obviously, vice versa.
Can someone tell me what I need to do, please?

A:Have Windows 7 automatically switch to LAN when cable is plugged in and switch to wireless when it's removed

Hi,
There are two methods can help you.
1. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings> and right click your wired and wireless adapters one at a time to change the properties. Select IPv4, click <Properties>
then click <Advanced>. For each one, clear the "Automatic metric" check box and assign the metric value manually. Setting your wired adapter?s metric value lower than wireless adapter one, such as ?1? for wired adapter and ?2? for wired adapter.

2. Go to <Network and Sharing><Change Adapter Settings>,
hold down 'alt' to bring up the "File" menu, select "Advanced", select
"Advanced Settings" from the dropdown menu, adjust the priority of your wired adapter higher than your wireless adapter in the "Advanced Settings" window under the "Adapters and Bindings" tab.
Hope this helps. Please remember to click ?Mark as Answer? on the post that helps you, and to click ?Unmark as Answer? if a marked post does not actually answer your question. This can be beneficial to other community members reading the thread.

Need to no if I have this right

they have a dsl modem going to a Linksys router to a 24 port switch then to a little 4 port switch. sure, so then Would it be modem to router then router to any port on the big switch or is there an uplink port on the big switch it should go to? then you would hook a cat5e from one of the regular ports on the 24 port switch and run it to the uplink port on the 4 port switch need to no if the whole sequence is right. Hope someone can help, john will told me the cable would go from the big switch to the uplink on the small switch but I am wondering if I have it all right or not and wonderiing about from the router to the 24 port switch does the cable just go in a regular port in the big switch or if there is an uplink port does it go there. Hope you can understand my rambleing here. Thanks (please don't send me to a link) just need to no modem to router to regular port or uplink port on 24 port switch then from regular port on 24 port switch to uplink port on the 4 port switch. Thanks

A:Solved: Windows xp hookup question for modem, router, switch, to switch?

Router to uplink port on 24 port switch, and then normal port on the 24 port switch to uplink port on the second 4 port switch. An auto-MDX port on a device negates the need to worry about uplink ports for that particular cable connection.

You need to allow port 21 & 20, the FTP ports to be opened to the specific machine you are running your FTP server on.

Here's a decent treatment of FTP servers, even though they're doing Linux, the principal is the same.

One question I need to know

If you go from DSL modem to Router then Router to switch
my question is then
If I wanted to hook another mini linksys switch into the bigger switch would you run the cat5e cable from the first switch to a reg port in the second switch or would you run it to the uplink port and then hook the 1 or 2 computers into the reg ports of the second switch.??

Why does Windows 7 have such a hard time going from DHCP to static? Right now I'm using DHCP with no issues. If I switch to a valid, static IP, Windows 7 thinks the network has changed. It puts me in the ridiculous Unidentified Network and I lose the ability to do anything on the network. I am a network admin with Cisco certifications and Windows behavior in this situation is beyond me.

How can I simply set a static IP on Windows 7?

Hi.

I'm looking for a switch that has 10+ ports and has DHCP.
I need one for a LAN party. DHCP seems to need little configuration, so its sort of like plug and play. What switch do you recommend that meet my criteria?
Also, is there anything specific I need to know about setting up properly?

Thanks.

A:10+ port switch with DHCP?

You can pickup a 16-port gig switch or fast (100mbps) and then put all those boxes on static IP and the default gateway can be the lead PC. This way you don't need DHCP if your just doing a LAN Party and not a WAN to LAN Party. If you're doing WAN to LAN party then pickup a Wireless N/Gig Router and connect that into 16-port gig switch. Leave the IP address set to Obtain and then you would be good to go.

Hi

Is there any difference between a switch and a router with DHCP turned off?

I'm trying to connect a Mac and a PC (wired) to my Linksys E4200 but I don't have any ports left. I connected my Netgear WPN824 to my Linksys and turned DHCP off on the Netgear but I'm running into all sorts of problems:

- Mac/PC works for a few hours then looses network connectivity
- Mac/PC won't connect at all
- Mac will connect but I can't access my media server (PS3 Media Server) from my PS3 (which is wired directly to the Cisco)

I'm considering just giving up and buying a cheap network switch but was wondering if this will make any difference or will it just be a waste of money? With DHCP turned off, is the Netgear behaving exactly as a switch would anyway?

Thanks in advance!

I just moved my computer to a new location. I had cable internet and have switched to DSL. Since then crazy stuff is happening, all related I'm sure.

1. when I open Windows Explorer and click on My Computer it takes a long time to populate.

2. If I select anything from a right click menu it takes time to connect. For example, if I right click on a folder in explorer and click on search it takes a long time for the 'drive' to appear.

3. In any program, when I try to open a file from the 'look in' drop down menu I get a 'Server Busy, switch to' message.

I'm about to reformat the whole damn system if I can't find a solution. I searched the internet and have tried some suggestions posted like disabling maped drives and shell extensions but have not found a solution.

I'm hoping someone here can help me out of this dilema...

Hi,

I'd like to put a wireless router behind a switch to serve as an access point for a couple of laptops in the area. The setup would look like this:

modem > main router > switch > Linksys WRT54GS wireless router

How do I configure the wireless router behind the switch? I've tried disabling DHCP on it and connecting one of its LAN ports to the switch. I see it in the available wireless networks but cant access it. The main router (USR) has an IP of 192.168.2.1, the Linksys is 192.168.1.1, dont know if that has anything to do with it, just giving as much info as I can. Thanks.

A:Solved: Wireless router behind switch

This has worked in every case I've tried it, and for a ton of people here. You need it in the same subnet, but outside the DHCP pool.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. Leave the WAN port unconnected!

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wirele... Read more

A:Solved: Netbook Wireless Switch

Often it can be dust and gunk collected under the switch that might prevent it moving.
Try using canned air or carefully lubricate the switch.
Other than that you will have to remove the housing to get at the switch to fix or replace it

Hello
I'm using a sony Vaio and the wireless and bluetooth have stopped working.
The box on the bottom right of the screen for dealing with wireless device switch says "OFF" when I click it, it says I need to switch to either 2.4 ghz or 5 ghz as using both is making my connection unstable. (I'm paraphrasing)

I can't switch because I have no idea how to, and I can't alter the settings in the dialogue box as the checkboxes (bluetooth and wifi) are greyed out. What do I do?

Please help!

A:[SOLVED] Wireless Device Switch greyed out

The change you need to make is in your router configuration settings which you can access by typing your router's IP address into the address-bar of any web browser.
The IP address is typically either http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1

Once in your router's configuration page, open wireless settings and set it to 802.11b/g, not 802.11a

Hello,
Before I go on, you probably should know that my house layout is like an H. Previously had an (unsecured) static network set up. The dining room was in the upper left corner of the house, and my bedroom is in the lower left. The router covered most of the house, but my bedroom is next to the kitchen, lots of metal and stone, so I needed to set up a repeater/bridge. This allowed my iPod touch and MacBook to connect, and my Debian machine to use the LAN port on the back of the bridge so I could run my SSH/web server (hence the static IP). However, I've had to move the router/modem to the lower right, and I need to keep using the bridge, now with a switch in the LAN port with the Debian box and another Linux machine to work. I reset the router entirely, so I'm back on DHCP, which I'll change later. The problem lies in the repeater. It connects to my network (belkin54g) but assigns my iTouch the address 168.254.6.9, which I learned is a link-local address. The time I did get it working, I plugged in the switch and it went dead. How can I set up the bridge and switch to work together? What am I doing wrong? Might I need to do anything special afterwards to get static working properly?

Thanks!

PS The two Debian boxes have no GUI (Xorg), and ifconfig doesn't return anything, just another shell prompt.

I have tried a search here, but not found a thread with the same problem as mine. That may well be my fault; I am relatively inexperienced so may be using the wrong search terms. My apologies if that is the case.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop running XP with a built in wireless which can be switched on or off with a sliding button at the front. The laptop has not been used for a couple of weeks, and now I find that it will not start up properly as long as the wireless is switched on. If it is on, the laptop constantly restarts then crashes and restarts again, never getting started up properly. If I switch off the wireless, it will start perfectly normally. If I then switch the wireless on after a normal startup, it may take a few seconds or a few minutes, but it will then crash and go back to the restart-crash cycle. There is an error screen which comes up but it is too briefly displayed to read it or get a screenshot. I did a little research and tried a system restore which did not work. I also tried restarting without my wireless keyboard and mouse hooked up. When I did that and switched on the wireless, it stayed up long enough for me to connect to my network (the only time it was up long enough) then reverted to the restart/crash cycle again.

I'd appreciate any suggestions or advice, please.

Hi TSG guys and girls, it's been a while! Good to see the forums are still buzzing about with activity. Anyways, I'm about to run an ethernet cable downstairs and had a question about the cable I should use, then I remembered I had another question about networking and another and another and so I have this post.

Right now I have the basic Actiontec router hooked up to FiOS internet. I have a number of devices that connect wirelessly over 802.11g and a few that are wired to the router. I primarily use the network for internet access, however I do push files around from time to time.

1. If I buy an Airport Extreme to get wireless N throughout my house, do I just run an ethernet cable between the two routers (the Actiontec router is necessary for some of the TV features and so it must remain connected to the internet)? Will I be able to share files and see devices connected to either of these networks?

2. I am running an ethernet cable from my router (upstairs) to my basement for my PS3. Is there any reason to use a Cat 6 cable? The rest of my network cables are currently Cat-5, but they are all less than 10 feet in length and can easily be replaced, however the cable I am running is going to be around 100 feet so I'd like to buy the right cable.

3. A question related to both above: I've heard that connecting devices to a network in certain/different ways can slow down a (gigabit?) network. Would someone please explain this idea. Should I be running Cat-... Read more

I have a wireless router connected to my modem, and ALL PC's connect to that for internet.

I also have a gigabit switch I use to transfer data in between several of the machines. I do it quite often and I don't want it eating up the wifi bandwidth.
I have done it before, but it has been a long time and I cannot remember how I forced internet traffic over the wifi and local traffic through the switch
Is the only way to do it to specifically tell Windows to use the IP address of the LAN connection? I know it will work that way, forcing local traffic directly to that IP, but I seem to remember there being an easier way to do this.

I have never wanted it and never used it except on my mothers laptop witch is obviously built-in.
So my experience with wireless stuff is very low...

some fact that may play a role for your comments:
-from PC to modem/router threw the walls will be about 8 yards max.
-there is a chimney in the direct path from PC to modem/router.
-there is barely any metals used in the house although the modem is placed next to the water-main.
-the laptop of my mother never had any issues and is about 2 years old cant tell you the what hardware it used ATM.

- I prefer an internal piece of hardware witch I have a PCI slot for with the room. Although I would also like to be able to give internet to multiple PC's or whatever , ya never know ; LAN party for example...

I thought that I had this all figured out, but my dad just asked me a question about my setup, and I can't answer it.

The setup is like this:
[ip-phones + computers]-->[small switch]-->[managed L2 switch]-->[router]-->[modem]

I have several ip-phones and computers grouped into blocks of 8. Each set of 8 is a medley of phones/computers connected to a small switch http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Sate...nksys/Common/VisitorWrapper&lid=3681322279B34

Each of these switches, in turn, will be connected to a managed L2 switch http://www1.ca.dell.com/content/products/productdetails.aspx/pwcnt_3448p?c=ca&cs=calca1&l=en&s=biz that will create 2 VLANS: One VLAN will contain all of the phones, and the other will contain all of the computers. In turn, each VLAN will have its own router and DSL modem, thereby separating the network traffic.

I know that I can use this L2 switch to make the VLANS based on the MAC addresses of the devices. However, the smaller switches do not support 802.1q [VLANs]. Will it be a problem that the smaller switches do not support VLANs? Essentially, will this setup work to split up network traffic?

Thanks once again,
-Roger

A:Computer, switch, switch, router, modem

I have the same DELL switch for my phones. You PoE will not carry across the linksys switches, so that is the first problem.
Next are the computers attached to the phones? Or does each device get its own drop?

And whats this about 2 routers and modems? Thats a bit over kill!! QoS would do the trick.

I would run all the devices off the Dell and attach the computers to the Phones (most IP Phones have a passthrough port) Configure the Dell with trunk ports with the Computer VLAN passing untagged traffic making it the native VLAN. While having the phones on a Tagged VLAN(If you phones conig allows you to set the VLAN in its config great! If not you can bind the MAC to the VLAN). The you create a QoS policy giving the VoIP traffic priority!

Hi Everyone.....
So, I just got Wireless Broadband hooked up in my business. I hooked the LAN to the Router and then hooked up a 16 port gigabit switch. I have three terminals coming out of it (in the bcak of the building) as well as a line running to the front of the building. At the front of the building I have the line going into another 16 port gigabit switch. I have 4 computer terminals coming out of that switch. I AM getting internet at the back of the building .....but nothing at any of the terminals after the second switch (front of the building). Can someone help?

Thanks!

Hi - I am having to extend my network and want to use 2 switches. Current one is a Belkin 5 port 10/100. Now thinking of buying the:

Belkin 8 port 10/100 (F5D5513Iuk8) or
Netgear 8 port 10/100 (FS608) or
Netgear Prosafe 8 port 10/100 (FS108).

Which is the best one to get (I realise the Netgear Prosafe is normally more expensive but I can get it at the same price as the Belkin)?

Could anybody also advise if the second switch will provide as much speed (bandwidth, I think) to the PCs it supplies (3) as the first one which will be linked to my router and 3 PCs and a couple of printers. I would really appreciate any advice you can give - I have spent ages Googling this question and am still not clear.

Many thanks

Alright so my Fire Dept is looking at buying a new server. The one we have now is set up as Active Directory w/ Roaming profiles. I was wonder if there is a way to copy or transfer the users, settings, and files to the new server? I do not want to copy the OS to the new server though.

Is there anyway to do this. There probably is but I just dont feel like looking through Google and Forums to find the answer.

Over the weekend my computer was attacked by more than one trojan. My anti-virus was able to quarantine and delete them but my computer is still having problems.

I keep getting a message that says
Server busy
This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy.
Choose Switch To to activate the busy program and correct the problem.Click to expand...

With a switch to , retry , and cancel button. The cancel is grayed out and there is no way to click the X. It appears for a while and then leaves.

Also the menu bar, start button, and desktop icons are completely gone. There is only a desktop image.

I'm also getting random pop-ups in internet explorer, while I am using Firefox, from something called "From Internet Speed Monitor" and I randomly get pop-ups for "Advertising" on Firefox.

Is there anything to do to fix this? I use a Compaq running on Windows XP. I've run anti-virus already and it did not find anything.

Thank you for your help.

I ran spybot, it found some things to remove.

I usually use adaware, so it didn't find anything new.

In wordpad.
File , Open.
Click on drop down list to select drives and files.
Delay for a few seconds.
Box opens. Server Busy, Switch to, or retry.
Switch briings up the start menu.
Retry eventually works and brings up the file list.

Any idea what is causing this or how to trouble shoot it?

Hi all, I have a very annoying problem. I was using Rackspace to host my email for my business. I have 4 mailboxes, 3 of them were on exchange and had rules set up to forward the right messages to the right person. I frequently get 2-19MB emails in one of them. Rackspace was having IMAP problems so I switched to 1and1 (terrible idea). 1and1 does not offer exchange mailboxes higher then 1GB (one of my inboxes has more than 2GB in it) so right now I am on their mailExchange, which does not offer the robust rules that exchange does. I am currently holding on by using outlook rules to forward the email. I have done research and I want to switch my business to google apps. I want to know what to do to minimize email downtime, (because I CANNOT lose any emails, and they have to get where they are supposed to go within the day) and if there is downtime how long will it be? also, will any emails be lost in the switch and what will happen to emails that I receive during the switch. Thank you in advance. (I receive the smallest volume of mail on the weekend between saturday 12am to sun 12pm)

Here is the situation.

There is a networked environment of 1 server and 8 computers all connected to a switch. The switch is connected to a panel on the wall that is connected to the patch panel and that is connected to a dsl modem.

They all work fine with DSL, however, the networking within the 8 computers and 1 server is connecting at 10 megabits per second. I have all the 8 computers set at autosensing so that it could run a 100 megabits per second but it keeps running at 10. The switch has the capability on running 10 or 100 and the nic cards has the capability also. What is the problem???

A:Network NIC Server Switch Hub Question

You might want to try connecting the DSL modem to only one computer (internet sharing server) with 2 NIC's, then have the 2nd NIC go to the switch. Set the NIC connected to the DSL to 10, and all the rest to 100. The way you have it set up now is the reason you are only getting 10 megabits, because each computer is connecting directly to the DSL network, and DSL will only work at 10.

Hello all

I just installed 4GB ram on my 32 vista and it only recognized 3GB in the os (vista 32) and all 4GB in the bios. so I decided to use the /3GB Switch, by using that command in bcdedit, it all worked good. The problem is now I have 3069 mb physical memory and ONLY 209 mb Kernal Memory!!! so I used the "bcdedit /deletevalue IncreaseUserVa" and bcedit said it worked successfuly so i restart my pc and it STILL had the same memory! so right now im stuck with only 209 mb Kernal memory! any ideas on how to fix this? I looked all over google and found nothing. Should I keep these settings or try and fix it?how do i fix it?

A:3GB switch will not switch back, vista 32!

I am not too familiar with those commands you speak of, but I do have a question: Is the video card built into the motherboard? If so, what amount of system memory is being shared with it? Besides that, I have no more ideas to offer you. Sorry

Can anyone please help to see if I'm doing this right or am I missing something ?.  Any help, suggestions would be gratefully received since there is very little on the subject in connection with this particular model .thanks in advance.

I understand that a hub is more like a party line, where all devices hear and read data before sending it to next port, and a switch is advanced hub. But, what is a router. I know what a wireless router is, but they say a router is more advanced than a switch. Can you buy a non-wireless router?

Also, can you connect 2 switches together? So, Modem-----to Switch----to Switch----Computer

And both switches have other devices connected?

A:Hub vs Switch vs Router/ 2 Switch Story

you CAN buy a non-wireless router--but--the two I found on Amazon were only 10/100 (most modern systems use gigabit ethernet 10/100/1000) but wired are generally cheaper than a wireless router(the Cisco below is NOT cheap)--however--it's not necessary to use the wireless part of the wireless router as most have at least 4 ports (wired).

Yes you can connect switches together but they won't allow for multiple computers to connect to the Internet (at least not easily nor in a way that makes sense).

What devices are you trying to connect together?

wired routers:
Amazon.com: TRENDnet 4-Port Broadband Router TW100-S4W1CA (Black): Electronics

Amazon.com: Cisco-Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router with 4-Port 10/100 Switch: Electronics

We are moving to a new office location. The guys who will be setting our network is proposing the following equipment:

1. 3Com 24-port 10/100 mbps switch
2. 24-port Patch panel
3. 6u data cabinet
4. 1u cable management

The new office will be a 2-floor building with around 40 computers. I asked some of my friends who are more expert on network setup and told me typical switch (Linksys, Cisco) will do if we need to save some money.

What do you think? Thanks a lot!

A:Is 3Com 24-switch necessary or typical switch will do?

Well, first off, I'd be specifying a gigabit switch for expandability, I can't see investing in a 10/100 switch in 2010! If you don't need a managed switch, or need to save money initially, and unmanaged switch will probably be significantly cheaper.

In point of fact, if you want to go really cheap, you can get away for less than $100!

I'm running a simple network at home with a Linksys BEFSR41 router. I have two computers hooked up wired and a wireless router acting like an access point that I use for my laptop occasionally. Until this weekend I've been having no problems but I shut down the computers due to weather and now one of them is not able to communicate with any others on the network. The problem computer will get an address supplied to it by the router (DHCP server) but once it has it I cannot get any other connectivity. Of course this is hindering internet access on this computer. I can ping the loopback and assigned IP addresses w/o problems but when I ping the default gateway (router) and/or the other computer I get "Request timed out." I initially thought it was the NIC so I bought another one but still get the same issue. I've moved the cards to different PCI slots but no luck. I tested the cable running from the computer and the router but found no problems. I even tried resetting the TCP/IP stack but still didn't work. The computer in question is running WinXP SP2 with the original NIC being a Linksys LNE100TX and the new one being a D-Link DFE-530TX+.

Any clues on this? If more info is needed let me know--it's been a while since I've posted. Thanks in advance.

Hiya and welcome

I've split you off into your own thread, as the one you replied to has been solved

The version of HijackThis you're running is old.

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

This happens on my work PC every time we boot it up. It seems to come up just after WinfaxPro has initialised the fax modem. The message is:

Server Busy
This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy. Choose ‘Switch To’ to activate the busy program and correct the problem.

Options are: Switch To…./Retry/Cancel

Cancel is greyed out. If you select either of the other two, the message disappears then comes back a few seconds later. If you keep pressing retry enough times, the message will go eventually but anyway it does disappear of its own accord after a while – may be a couple of minutes, may be longer. Doesn’t seem to affect anything – don’t have any spyware pop-ups or anything like that.

Can anyone help please??

I have recently inherited the job of managing our small network 20 workstations 3 printers etc etc...
Need to find out how I can access CVSM in order to run diagnostics on the ports. The documentation says to change settings on the browser--now this might seemlike a silly question but is that the browser on my NT4 server? When I enter the IP address that I was given with the network docs(bits of post it notes etc) nothing happens. In fact I'm not sure that the server is connected to the router directly but thorugh the switch. Help!

A:How to find ip of switch? Cisco 2924 XL on NT4 server...

Been a while since I have worked with cisco products but from what I remember in school, you need to use a Terminal Application to configure most Cisco Switches or Routers. I believe with the switch you would need to hook up to it directly to the switches console port to configure it.

Hello,

I've searched the forum and could not find an answer to this problem.

I have a Windows 7 Enterprise machine where at the login screen the "Switch User" button is missing and so I am unable to clear the last user.

Just about all the results I got back on this topic was how to re-enable the "Switch User". This doesn't help because I can't login to make the change.

TIA!

Hey all,

I had to reinstall Windows Vista to my laptop, and when I restarted it to see how it was working the wireless button wouldn't turn on. My laptop is the type that has the button above the keyboard that normally turns blue when it's on and available to connect to a wireless network.

Does anyone know how to go in through the Run prompt to get to the administrator settings to reactivate the wireless button? I found it online at one point, but I can't remember how now.

It just toggles straigh back to the 'Off' position. Prior to the Windows Update, the wi-fi was running fine. any ideas/help would be great! Cheers DP

I have 2 pcs, one is connected to a high speed cable modem and linksys router, and the other is wireless.

I need to switch them around, but am wondering if there is anything special I need to do.

Can I take the wireless card out of my pc and put it into the other one or should I just buy another wireless card?

Also, I have the old ethernet card from before, but can I just put that where the wireless card is now?

How do I go about doing this switch? Is there any type of configuring I need to do?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Recently an issue has appeared on my laptop, an HP Pvilion G6 running Windows 7 64 bit with SP1 and all latest updates with an Intel Core i5 2.3 processor and 4.Gb RAM.

Shortly after booting and arriving at the desktop and before opening any programs a dial up connection window opens with no input from myself, prompting me to choose which service I want to connect to followed soon after by anther window with the title ‘Server Busy’ and the following text. ‘This action cannot be completed because the other program is busy Choose ‘Switch to’ to activate the busy program and correct the problem.’ Beneath this are three buttons, from left to right they’re labelled Switch To… , Retry and Cancel. Cancel is greyed out. Pressing Switch To… opens the start menu, presumably to allow me to select the busy program but there’s no indication of which is the problematic program so I just close the start menu. When the start menu opens the Server Busy window closes briefly but reappears after a second and the loop continues. Pressing the retry button makes the window disappear briefly only to immediately reappear. It seems impossible to get rid of this window.

I uninstalled Nokia Ovi Suite which I sometimes use to use my phone as a modem. I thought it was something to do with this because that was the service listed in the Dial Up Connection window. The problem persisted so I performed scans using Avira, Malwarebytes, ... Read more

I am interested in getting my office to run Outlook Web Access. I just recently joined this new small firm and they have no IT department; currently they outsource to a guy who comes on site once every two weeks or so.

They have Outlook 2007 installed, and I dont know much else about it other than the fact that when we have to access our email remotely, we need to go to a web hosting site that connects to our mail server via POP or something; i.e., when I view new mail from the internet, it doesn't synchronize or otherwise appear in my inbox when I'm back in the office, which is extremely frustrating.

I am sure that management has no idea what MS Exchange or OWA is. I would like to suggest to them that they need to purchase this and give them some guidance but I don't know much about it. In my old office, it just worked fine.

Is there anyone here that can provide some tips on what they need to do to upgrade their current system to be more practical / functional?
Thanks...

Well, first and foremost.....cost would have to be discussed. It's quite possible that they didn't go the Exchange route the first time due to cost.

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post, so be gentle with me

I need some networking help please.

We have;

* 2wire 4 port ADSL router
* Server - Running SBS with 2 NICs
* 48 port switch
* A load of computers running a mix of XP and vista
One of the server NICs plugs into the router, the other into the switch. The router doesnt plug into the switch.

The server gets and internet from the switch with no problem.

I've plugged all the client computers into the switch - so in theory they would connect to the server > get their ips (dhcp) > then gain access to the net via the server.

However this is not the case. no client computer can ping or rdp into the server, altough when doing IPCONFIG it seems to have got an ip from the server.

If i plug a computer directly into the servers NIC (not the internet one) I can RDP into it, and get an internet connection.

Why is does it stop working once i plug them both into the switch?

any help is greatly appreciated as this one has been racking my brain for some time now

Thanks

Joe

My WinXP Home PC won't connect properly (limited connectivity/no internet) via ethernet cable to my router (Belkin N150).

Ipconfig /all shows the IP address as 169.254.117.71 but this is determined by an entry in the registry at HLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\{39A...} > 'DhcpIPAddress' - REG_SZ - 169.254.117.71. Also listed at 'IPAutoconfigurationAddress'. My laptop connects fine plugged into the same port getting it's IP automatically (192.168.2.2) and getting internet fine.

After much searching I can't figure out what's wrong.

I've tried adding a DWORD entry 'IPAutoconfigurationEnabled' = 0, also tried deleting the 2 values.
Tried setting the IP manually to 192.168.2.6 - limited connectivity goes away but I get no internet connection from the router nor file sharing.

Any help please?

Had the below set up forever w/o problems.

On the desk: My desktop AND work laptop.
Under the desk: a 4 port switch with CAT5s to Work laptop (PB6R35P), My desktop (NT-PC) and NAS
The switch connects to router thats configed as DHCP server.

One day from my desktop tried to access NAS shares and got this
Here is the network view
The network map on desktop (NT-PC) doesnt show the switch, but the big question mark instead, and router "Netgear Leo"
My work laptop is connected to same switch as Desktop and NAS, but the map looks different and
I can see and ACCESS the NAS..
I've also confirmed that homegroup has same name on NAS, Router and Desktop.. The work laptop is a domain machine

Here is the view from laptop:
The Switch shows up as icon, but Desktop (NT-PC) is unable to show up on the map..
I can FTP to the NAS from Desktop, but despite that NAS shows up on network map as media server, it still wont launch any media..

So access to my Book collection via Calibre thats configed to store library on a NAS share is gone and it wont connect VIA FTP.. at least not in a way that allows me to search by title, etc..

Any guesses Network ppl? Please?

Much appreciated!

Hi,
I am first time around here seeking help.
We are in a small office and are currently using one Desktop computer as a File server by sharing a folder using the existing WiFi from Internet router. This was done by connecting one LAN cable from the Router to the Desktop and the remaining computers connect to the router through WiFi. This way, each user could browse the internet while also having access to shared files from the central Desktop.
We are in the process of shifting to a new office where some users are seated far away, also the maximum connections possible in the router through WiFi is 16. So, we have laid LAN cables and got 2 Low cost network switches (unmanaged...TP Link 1024D). At the moment we are not planning to purchase a Server, but continue to use the same desktop. Instead of continuing to use WiFi, it is planned to make use of the new LAN cables and Switches.
The problem is if I connect the File sharing Desktop on Port number 1 in the Switch, I will not be able to use internet in the computers connected through LAN cable (and vice versa). I need to use Internet as well as shared files from the Central Desktop.
Thanks in advance.

My family has a small business and I am pretty much the extent of our IT department, so I'm hoping someone here can help me out. We use an inventory management software called Edible by Solid Software. Every day our employees complain that the program is incredibly slow, which it is. It takes a very long time to do anything and locks up constantly. I'm wondering if the problem is with the server or with the switch.

The inventory management software is installed on a dedicated server, a Dell PowerEdge 2900 Windows Server Standard 2007 with 16GB ram and the other server, which contains everything else including all of the users, is a Dell PowerEdge 2800 running Windows Small Business Server 2003 with 4GB of ram. The activity monitor on both does not show a high percent of usage.

We have 25 users that use the inventory management software and 40 that are connected to the network overall.

The switch we use is a 3COM Baseline Switch 2948-SFP Plus. There are 32 ports being used. I tried having the Internet company, LiNKCity, upgrade us to 10mbs from the 5mbs we had. This appears to have had no effect, so I don't think its a bandwidth problem.

From this basic information, is it possible to tell if this is a problem with the server or if we are pulling too much from the one switch? My thought is that the two servers are trying to communicate with each other to process information from the database and slowing down because all of the computers are pulling from the ... Read more

A:Office Computers Running Slow, Switch or Server Problem?

If you have 32 ports used, and 40 users, that sounds like you may need a new switch. And I would configure it using VLANS, so those who use the database are on a separate "network" than those who don't use it, to isolate the network trafffic.

Having the internet company increase bandwidth won't have an effect on your internal network. Their speed is only from your external router to the internet, and it's very rare that you would hit that 10mb limit unless you have multiple locations and/or use "cloud" computing.

Not sure the title makes sense... but here goes:

Right now, I have Comcast HSI going to a dlink wireless router and all is good.

I have a new PC on a different floor of the house that I want to connect to the network. I don't want to snake cat5 throughout the house and it has no wireless card.

What I want to do is place a second wireless router (netgear wgv615v) in the room with the new PC and connect it (to the PC) with a cat5 cable. Then the netgear should connect to the wireless n/w and the PC gets a DHCP address from the dlink

Is this possible?

I've tried setting the netgears public IP as something in the DHCP range but I don't think that will work as it will never sync up to the dlink.

Am I missing something?

A:wireless AP as wired switch

A few routers will work as a wireless bridge (AP client). If the Netgear wgv615v is one of these, simply configure it as described in the user manual.

Hi guys..

Got a small question about adding wireless to my Exsisting Setup.

Currently I have 1 computer used to connect to the internet with ADSL, it's shared to 3 other computers using a local switching hub.
My home hub is connected to my work's hub about 70M away from my Home.
with another 3 Computers at Work...

So all computer in my network are working great! Sharing files/Internet

I got a new Wireless Laptop with 11g 54Mbits.
Can I add an Access Point to my Home Hub and another Access Point to my hub at work, so that my Lappy can be used wirelessly both home & work???

Or must I rethink my entire network with the use of a new ADSL Modem with router..
I'd perfer to stay with my current setup.

Yes, this is exactly what you can and should do instead of going and buying a new wireless router like most people.. *mutter*

My friend has a Toshiba Satellite laptop. I am not sure of the specific model. Also I think some of the hardware was put in after the laptop was initially purchased.

It has a built in wireless card, but it is not turned "on." When I try to connect with it, it says to turn on the wireless switch. How would I do that?

A:Turning wireless switch on

With my Dell the switch is the Fn + F2 key combination, with the F2 key denoted with a blue tower antenna icon. I think in another thread somebody said the switch on their Toshiba is on the front and is cleverly disguised to look like simply an indicator.

I have a little problem; I have an aspire 5920 laptop that usually connects to the internet fine. I have unknowingly turned off the wireless switch, though, and now it won't work. Could somebody help me locate the switch or tell me the function keys to turn it back on?

A:Can't find my Wireless Switch

Hi kruss08, and welcome to TSG.

Page 26 of the Aspire 5920's User Manual shows the location of the WLAN (Wireless LAN) On/Off switch.

My Z3 stopped detecting wi-fi, I now have to use a cable.  Even after a return to Factory Settings there is no indication of any wi-fi.  My home wi-fi is working as normal.  Have I accidentally switched off wireless on the Z3?  If so, how do I turn it back on?

A:Is there a wireless switch on an Aspire Z3 All-in-...

What operating system are you running?

Also, can you provide the first 10 characters of your serial number?

Hi, was just wondering if there was a feature on Windows 7 which will automatically switch from wireless to wired connection when I plug my computer into my modem or router. I have heard of such thing, but am not sure how to do it.

I am running on windows 7, and own a Dell Inspiron N5110.

Hi.....I use a KV switch to connect 2 computers using one monitor, mouse and keyboard. Is it possible to use a wireless keyboard with this setup? Obviously, at this point the mouse and keyboard and attached to the KV switch by USB. Not understanding the wireless, I'm wondering if it can only program with one system at a time. Thanks for any input!

A:KV switch and wireless keyboard

It really depends on whether or not your KVM will allow USB hardware detection.
Some do,some don't.
Shouldn't hurt to try and find out.

New to this forum. My apologies for posting this content in the vista OS forum. I realize this is the appropriate place to start. Thanks for your help

System: sony vaio
model: vgnar630e,
OS: Vista 32 home premium,
Wireless adapter: Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN

Had a malware infection which prevented me from accessing any software and redirecting all applications to MS Word. Not sure if all malware, etc are completely removed though System is functional now, except the wireless switch in front right side of laptop came on briefly then went out again soon after going through the last step of of malware removal process using MGtools.

I have updated all drivers. Gone to intel site to update wireless driver with most current, downgraded back to sony original driver, removed all third party wireless lan utilites and it still does not work. Called sony, my system is out of warranty and they are charging over and above what I can afford. They know the problem but will not fix it until I cough up enough dough. Any help to get to the bottom of this will be highly appreciated.

Thanks
cape

A:Wireless switch problem

I've seen those switches go bad before. Is it a physical switch or a hotkey?
