Bios update failed - Dell Precision M4600

Q: Bios update failed - Dell Precision M4600

I just got a used M4600, and the currently installed bios is A08. When I try to update to A16, it restarts, says it's updating firmware, but fails at 0%. It gives no reason, and no error code as far as I can tell. Thanks in advance for any help you guys can provide.

A: Bios update failed - Dell Precision M4600

That is NOT the issue! There is nothing wrong with the M4600 motherboards per se.
Everybody has been trying to find why when trying a BIOS upgrade, the system immediately fails with a basic "BIOS Update Failed" and no specific error code or more explanation. The answer is in the PDF document below - that is the message displayed when BIOS authentication fails!
You just have to look up the Dell Signature Firmware 'feature' that was introduced into a number of laptop incl the M4600. Download PDF doc. That was a feature introduced per NIST requirements.
In a nutshell, they changed the way BIOS authenticates a BIOS file before it will use it to update the BIOS & EC firmware. The M4600 is in the list of "Legacy Systems" where this was introduced. Basically, these systems did NOT have the Signature Firmware when produced.
Version A04 introduced this feature. After you install that, you will have an option to turn the Signature Firmware requirement On (default is Off). Once turned On, it can NOT be turned off!
The problem starts in BIOS ver A08. Something in the code is wrong. Because on some M4600s it updates the BIOS AND Activates the Signature Firmware requirement. After that, the system will NOT authenticate ANY other BIOS versions so you will NOT be able to upgrade past version 8!
I manage many, many systems for a company. I am currently sitting on 33 (yes, that many) M4600 with that exact same situation!
A motherboard swap does not correct the issue; all it does is give you a new BIOS chip to mess around with.

I installed BIOS update A16 to my M4600 and after it went to 100%, the system will no longer POST. No dell logo, no ability to get into BIOS. The hard drive light is bright white, and the battery light next to it flashes White once then 4 times amber, then white again plus 4 times amber, and repeats for a few more times before just settling on non-stop flashing amber.
Pulled and swapped the memory and the hard drive, tried it with and without the battery, also pulled the CMOS battery. Again, no video on the screen, no Dell logo, no POST, no fans on, nothing activity wise other than those flashing lights when I turn it on. I'm thinking something went wrong with the BIOS update even it looked like it completed successfully and I've done hundreds of these to various Dell laptops over the years.
Any ideas what I should try next? I can't find that solid white HD, flashing amber Battery diagnostic code anywhere in any documentation or online so I don't even know where to begin.
Plus it's not under warranty anymore which angers me because it appears the only reason my laptop has been bricked is because I dared install the A16 update that was helpfully published right there on Dell's support page.

I would like to put an i7 into the computer. What are my options for my upgrade?
I currently have a Stock i5 2.5 GHz.

A:What processor upgrade could I do to my Dell Precision M4600?

The system uses second-generation (Sandy Bridge) Core i CPUs - these have model numbers starting with 2-- i.e., 2860QM.  The Extreme Edition CPUs were also shipped with this system -- you must remain within the Sandy Bridge CPU line - not the later Ivy Bridge (3xxx) , Haswell (4xxx), or later Broadwell or Skylake CPUs.

I want to open the back panel of the Dell Precision M4600 so that I can upgrade the RAM and also put in a secondary hard disk. There is no documentation or tutorial for this. Anyone can provide and guide on how to do this? I can only remove the battery but from there I'm lost. I can see 2 screws covering the back back panel but I'm not sure if it's the right screw to remove.
Any help is appreciated.

To add to urlnotfound's post:
Remove the two screws under hte battery that hold the cover.
Slide, sometimes with a little force, the cover backwards towards the rear of the laptop.  It only moves about 1/4", and is completely free to lift off at that point.
Note that there is only one 2.5" HDD place, and it's the hot-swapable one you see on the side (still have yet to figure out how to remove it, the level doesn't seem to do anything - yet).  The "2nd HDD" is actually a dedicated "mSATA" slot, which stands for Minicard SATA.  It's a tiny PCI-express slot, just like the three you see when you remove the cover.  They are very rare to buy though.  I really wish I bought the one Dell was offering, cause aftermarket they are next to non-existant.  I found only 2 manufacturers, which are the same brands under the hood.  But they are only the 50mm size.  I want a 70mm site to slot into the WWLAN PCI-Express slot, cause those are available up to 240 GB.
And FYI, mSATA devices with SATA II interfaces can get up to 240 to 250 MB/s read/write!  No, there are no SATA III mSATA that I could find.  Been searching for a month for them...
Also note that only the two top RAM sticks are accessible here.  I'm about to call Dell support to find out where the othe two DIMM slots a... Read more

For a several years I use DELL Precision laptops. First M4500 and from 2012 M4600.
My Precision M4600 configuration comprises of: i7 qqd proc , 16GB RAM, 2GB Nvidia quadro and 3 hard drives:
1st is SSD DELL Samsung mSATA PM810 128GB - Linux system
2nd SSD Intel ultra speed 520 - 240GB - Windows system
3rd HDD Seagate 7200 - Data
For 4 years I didn't have any problem with my Precision configuration. Suddenly a week ago problems on boot started.
Namely, every second time BIOS during update do not recognize my mSATA PM810 disk and cannot boot up the system. That means: all 'odd' times (1st, 3rd, 5th ...) I start computer or reset the mSATA disk is recognized under other name and not as MiniCard while all 'even' (2nd, 4th etc) everything is OK.
Problem description: I start computer, After passes BIOS the screen is blank nothing happens blocked. I restart, all fine. I restart again, again blank screen nothing, I restart again - all fine, and like this goes around.
I absolutely didn't do anything with machine it just started at once behaving like that.
Things that I have unsuccessfully tried:
Change Boot order in BIOS leaving only MiniCard - does not work. I've seen that each odd time BIOS changes the name of mSATA in disk order and when I restart it brings it back to normal. It does that if SATA is set as Raid-on or as AHCI device.
Downgrading BIOS to A15 - nothing and back to A16 nothing.
Remove other hard drive leaving only mSATA. Then it wor... Read more

Hi All,
Got a Precision m4600 laptop with Intel i7 2760QM CPU, recently upgraded graphics card to nvidia Quadro 2000M and added 16GB RAM.
Fresh install of Win 10, I ran a CPU stress test in Dell SupportAssist software.
Noticed CPU temp peaked at 100*C and it stabilized at ~91*C however the short 100*C appears to be on Core #3?
Is this expected? pls see image attached

I have re-pasted it properly, good quality paste and just a thin layer applied... I'm puzzled?

I went to the Dell product page for my computer - Dell XPS 8500, and ran the scan to check for updates.  3 updates, one of them for BIOS.  I ran the updates and initiated the BIOS update.  Midway through it appeared to get hung up and my machine froze.  I left it for an hour, came back and still no luck.
So I rebooted the machine and of course now it won't boot up.  I have power and can hear the fan, but no lights on the box and no screen input.
Looking though the manual and on this forum, I've tried resetting the BIOS jumpers, and removing the CMOS battery.  When I rebooted I saw lights on the box this time but it shut down after 30 seconds, and now back to the same problem.
From what I read on this forum I'm SOL unless I buy a new motherboard.
Just thought I'd check if anyone had any other suggestions.  If not, where can I get  a new motherboard for this?  The product page for my model doesn't list it as an option...

Thanks for your help!

A:Failed BIOS update - Dell XPS 8500

When did your warranty expire? If it expired less than 6 months ago, you might be able to get Dell to fix it, assuming they can get the board. They had a policy to replace a board -one time only- if it failed a Dell BIOS update within 6 months after the end of warranty. I don't know if that policy still exists.
Those are all different revisions of the same motherboard. I don't know what the differences are. They could be as simple as a different supplier for one of the components on the board all the way up to a change in the circuit layout.
Maybe Dell Spare Parts can tell you about the differences among the 3, or at least tell you which is the most recent revision,  even if they don't have the boards available...?
All three support the H77 chipset which is a key issue.
Look at your motherboard for the sticker to see what version you have now. If you can't find out about specific differences, you may want to get one that's the same version, assuming it's one of the choices available.
You should look elsewhere if Impact doesn't have the revision you want and/or for price comparisons. And always ask if the board is new, used, refurbished and about the warranty.

Hi, I have repeated experience of failed BIOS firmware update on Dell e5570. More precisely the part
"Sending Intel (R) Management Engine Firmware Update" always hangs on 100% and never finishes.  The annoying thing is that laptop cannot be shutdown via power button (even with the long press) and I have to wait hours till my battery dies :-(
Im trying to update BIOS from 1.6.3 to 1.7.3. In the end, I have 1.7.3 BIOS version, but Embedded Controller stays on A07 instead of A11 so I got my PC into middle of versions :-( First broken thing I noticed is WiFi always turned off after wake from sleep or after startup.
Dell support, please help. I need new BIOS (and Embedded Controller) to resolve some NVMe and other issues with the laptop.
Thanks, M.

I have a dell m6700 laptop with AMD M6000 graphics. Battery seems to be dead. Running on Direct AC power.
Couple of days ago, the laptop booted on Intel HD 4000, windows device manager saying GPU is disconnected - visible under hidden devices.

On running boot time Dell Diagnostics, it clearly said that the battery is not able to supply power to the GPU.
I removed the battery and still the laptop boots on Intel HD 4000. GPU missing. There have been couple of times when the bios did detect the GPU. Totally random.
Now the bios is only booting on Intel HD even on direct AC Power (battery removed). HDMI port does not work either, VGA is working. Weird.
Tested on two original dell AC adapters.
Any idea why the GPU won't start when on direct AC power?

Well apparently when they installed my new motherboard they did something wrong and my computer's bios reads lattitude 810 version a02 (I talked to one of the tech guys over the phone and they use the same motherboard for multiple latptops).
Anyway you can see how this would cause me problems (mainly video card issues), Ive downloaded the new bios but it wont let me run it or /forcetype it says NOTICE!! Running on an unsupported system.
Occasionally I'll be able to boot up just fine but I cant run any games or anything that stresses the video card, and sometimes when i boot up it will be a mess of colors and lines and ill barely be able to see anything, and those times i cant even load into normal mode.
I dont have a floppy disk drive, i do have a cd burner and flash drive, is there anyway for me to get this bios to run?
Windows xp pro btw.

Hello,

That appears to be a .exe file, likely the BIOS itself. Only run that file on the machine whose BIOS you are trying to update.

The latest BIOS for that machine is dated 3/28/2006 so I wouldn't recommend installing it unless you need it. Be aware, that machine does not even list Vista as a supported OS.

I have a Dell Precision M4300, and the HD started giving me issues, so I decided the replace the ATA HDD with a spare SSD I had lying around. When I went into the BIOS to change it from IDE to ACHI, (tried to boot with it, but SSD not seen), I found that all the darn settings were locked with security password. I have no idea if it?s using default Dell passwords or the previous owner set it, BTW, no chance of contacting previous owner. I tried both Password and Admin and neither of them worked, I know those are couple pwd?s Dell uses.
I thought I could treat it like desktop PC, so I removed the laptops battery and disconnected the CMOS battery. Came back over an hour later, and the darn BIOS is still totally locked down.
I even flashed the BIOS and updated it hoping this would give me fresh BIOS that wasn?t locked down, but it?s still locked. Not sure what?s going on, but I'm not used to BIOS saving its settings after all battery power has been removed, or the BIOS has been updated.
Any way of unlocking the BIOS settings?

A:Dell Precision M4300 - bios Locked ? ? ?

Laptops are not like a desktop were you can revert all BIOS settings including the passwords but pulling the CMOS battery. Laptops store the passwords and such in non-volatile memory which will survive without power. As for reseting the BIOS password, I believe Dell has some backdoor system. But I don't really know.

I just installed a Western Digital 6 TB hard drive in a Precision T3400 with BIOS version A14,  All seems to be working in Windows, however when I go into BIOS for the to check settings for the new hard drive BIOS locks up.  I realize that this computer is a little dated but with storage being it's main use I have no need to update anything other then the hard drives.  Has anyone else come across the same issue?  Is the hard drive at risk of failing because the BIOS has a problem with the hard drive?  Is there any work around that anybody knows about?  I really like the Precision Workstations, I have 3 of them up and running at home, and this is the first real problem I have encountered with them.
Thanks for any comments or suggestions.

Jumper in service mode - nothing
Is there any way to flash a bios from an USB drive. I've been reading a lot of foruns and all talk of some switch /writeromfile but doesn't work on this dell bios setup.
Does any one have an idea for me to try?

Hello.

So i was browsing for 7 days, i'm currently using my home made computer due to the problem with my Dell.

well at first everything was working like a charm, i installed the DVD-Writer and put it in Slave mode.

that day, when i wanted to install Vista on it, i tried to make the DVD-Writer as a primary drive, when i entered the BIOS, everything was alright but when i tried to change anything it tell me that the SETUP is locked, there is no password at all, its just this Factory password, so i tried to remove the Battery like has been suggested everywhere, but unfortunately XP isn't working at all, neither from the safe mode, all i get is that windows cannot start probably. tried to enter the BIOS, the date is back to 2005, and the factory password was still on, and the setup is locked.

now, i think my problem is in the BIOS, i need to put my dvd-writer as primary, but i need the Master Password.

I tried to contact Dell but they needed some details that i don't have, its just they are asking too much and i just have few info. and above all, i don't have a fax machine.

so any help would be appreciated.

Hi,
Powered down a working T7500 workstation and moved offices.  Powered it back on, and I get the S14 POST error - Green power light and lights 1, 2, and 3 on, light 4 off.
If I hit F12 at boot I can get to the Boot Device Menu, where I can choose my RAID 1 "drive", 2 other internal drives (there are 4 HDD in total), CDROM, Diagnostics, or System Setup.  Whichever one of these I chose the system hangs.  Particularly worrying that diagnostics and system setup hang.
If I don't press F12 and let the machine boot normally it hangs after a successful MPT boot message.
In both cases (F12 option or letting it run) the keyboard is then unresponsive and the system sits and does nothing.
I've reset CMOS (bought a new battery too) and unplugged all the easy to reach components.
I'd be very grateful if anyone can tell me what I can possibly do next!
Derek

Update: F2 (to get into BIOS) does not work either.  If I hit F2 at Dell Logo screen I can see it says "Entering Setup" ... but after the MPT success message the machine hangs as above.

A year or so ago, I had a memory error and replaced the original 8GB of memory with 4 new 4GB modules to make up 16GB.
I've also had to replace the primary / boot hard drive as the original one crashed.
For the last couple of weeks, the initial boot sequence seemed to really slow down (i.e. before it even starts to load Windows). There is a little progress bar under the Dell logo on the screen which seems to indicate progress on startup, and this used to pass very quickly. However, recently, it stopped for quite a while about 1/3 of the way in. After a minute or so it would go all the way and Windows would boot.
However, this morning it wouldn't, and after a few boot attempts I ran the PSA tests.
Almost all of the memory tests failed:
A box on the screen appears with 8 CPUs numbered from 0 to 7. It seems that CPU3 often "halted" whilst the others would continue to show progress. Sometimes CPU7 also halted.
Some solutions I read was to "reseat" the memory modules - this seems like a lot of possible combinations. Some solutions suggested that even after this, it was found that the motherboard was at fault. Is it worth the time and effort to reseat the memory modules?

I have a brand new, to me, refurbished Precision M4500, that I purchased from Dell. This laptop came with Windows 7 Pro, 32 bit OS, 4Gb ram, 250 gig HD, bios is A07. I have plans to install a larger hard drive, 8 Gb Ram, and Widows 7 Pro 64 bit OS. The reason for OS change is because I have heard that the 32 bit version will not recognize more than 4 Gb of ram.
The first day that I had it, the machine would not wake up from hibernation. I checked online and found out that this is one of reasons for the A08 version bios. According to bios update instructions I am supposed to install A08 before jumping to A15, which is the latest version.
I have downloaded and tried to install the A08 several times now, I have tried to run as administrator and every other way that I can think of, except for a bootable DOS flash drive, which I do not yet have. A:Precision M4500 Bios will not update from A07 to A08

Hi VisionFire,

Thanks for the post. I would first suggest checking in the BIOS currently installed on your system if the Signed Firware update (opt in) in the BIOS can be found under the security settings and is listed as "Signed Firmware Update". Once this feature is turned on, it cannot be disabled.
If this setting is enabled the system will checks all BIOS updates are dell signed prior to completing installation, If for some reason the .exe file is not signed or corrupted, the installation will fail.

If the setting is disabled. Have you been able to try reinstalling A07 or even flashing back to a previous version before upgrading to A08?

If the setting is enabled. I would suggest downloading the A08 file again to make sure the version already downloaded was not corrupted in its original download.

A month ago, A10 was available for a day and they pulled it. I did download it, but did not install it. They never posted A11, but now have A12 listed as recommended. Does anyone know an alternative solution?
Thanks.

A:Dell Tech Support won't provide BIOS unlock password for Precision M4400

If you can't verify your ownership of the machine, they won't  unlock it -- if that's the case, you have just one option:  replace the mainboard.  If you do that, be ABSOLUTELY sure the seller guarantees there's no password on the replacement you buy.

I am new to the forum and this is my first post.  Just wanted to give a heads up on an issue I recently discovered.  I haven't found much on this I guess because the system is still pretty new.
I received a brand new Precision 7710 and the first thing I do is complete all Windows updates and do any driver updates that need to be done.
Here are the laptop specs:

I received this laptop on Monday March 21, 2016, saw that there were approx 4 or 5 driver updates on dell.com/support.
I chose to download all updates to the desktop and update from there as I always do.
I saved the bios update for the next day March 22, 2016 as I wanted to be in my office to do this update.  I am well aware you can easily turn your laptop into a brick if the update goes south.

Wow! You saved me.
I had the exact same issue with the 7710 and the 1.4.8 BIOS.  Motherboard replacement was scheduled for tomorrow.
I did a search found your post and now my machine is back in business.  No replacement necessary.
Thank you for troubleshooting this and posting the solution.

Hello,
I'm facing the following issue with a Dell Precision 5510 laptop with latest bios 1.2.14 A13. It appeared suddenly, I just rebooted a working system.
The laptop does not boot anymore and the Dell logo is not shown, however, the diagnostic battery led blinks 2 times white and 2 times amber.
According to the error table that I found here http://www.dell.com/support/article/uk/en/ukdhs1/SLN295101/EN#2016_to_Present that means
System Board : BIOS, ROM Failure
and the suggested next steps are:

Flash BIOS to latest revision
If problem persists contact Tech Support for further troubleshooting
Did anyone had a similar experience?
How can I re-flash the BIOS from a non-booting machine?
I found some tricks for the Dell XPS 9350 (extracting HDR and ROM files from bios executable and plugging a USB drive) but they do not seem to apply to this laptop.
UPDATE
I found http://www.dell.com/support/article/uk/en/ukdhs1/SLN300716/en but I'm still unable to recover the computer. I keep getting the 3:3 blinking pattern, even after I put the latest BIOS (renamed to 'BIOS_IMG.rcv') into a newly formatted FAT32 USB stick (2 GB). I also tried with different USB sticks, and both USB ports.
Any help is really appreciated
Best regards,
alessioc

Hi,
I purchased a Dell Precision 7710 laptop 2 months ago from Dell's website with the fingerprint touch sensor.  Afterwards, I installed Windows 10.
The laptop has been working fine until I installed the following update for ControlVault

Dell ControlVault2 Driver and Firmware
View details
File Name: Security_Driver_JP80V_WN64_4.4.28.187_A06.EXE

Importance: Recommended

Description: Update Package for Microsoft® Windows® 64-Bit. (27.78 MB)

Release Date: 10 Aug 2016

Version: 4.4.28.187 ,A06

Last Updated: 19 Aug 2016
The update appeared to succeed, but now I get a notification saying "ControlVault firmware upgrade in progress" EVERY REBOOT.  I tried uninstalling the ControlVault application, but that doesn't get rid of the popup.

In the Event Manager, it shows an Event ID 2 for the source "USHUpgradeService" with a description of "CV firmware upgrade failed".

1)  How can I uninstall the ControlVault software?

2)  Is there a fix for a bad firmware install?  Or is the ControlVault hardware useless now?

Hello

My last BIOS update has failed and now my laptop Satellite PrU400 PSU45E is out of order.
I want to use the Crisis Recovery Disk with an USB floppy drive but I don't know the key combination to run the boot-block.
Is anybody can help me?

Best regards

A:Satellite Pro U400 BIOS update failed - What is BIOS Boot-block access

Hi

I wondering what Crisis Recovery Disk do you have ?:|
In my experience the special disk is needed which is available only for ASP technician.
Therefore it?s necessary to contact the ASP in your country in order to reflash the BIOS.

In my opinion you shouldn?t not try any ?Crisis Recovery disks? which you fond in the net? this can lead to mobo damage?

I have, or had a laptop purchased 9 months ago, therefore under warranty. Yesterday the ThinkVantage System Update recommended a BIOS update. After the traditional recommendations about what should not shut down the computer, the laptop is reset and started with the update.

During execution, displayed on a screen command, a message "ERROR XXXX. Press any key to continue." After press the key the laptop was freezedy was completely blocked. After an hour without seeing response and no sign of life, I decided to turn it off to confirm the disaster. The laptop was dead.

The laptop began to beep and would not start. Before the panic generated by the situation, I searched the forums where I found several cases that refer to the same problem and the insinuation that makes LENOVO about the customer's responsibility to avoid recognizing the warranty.

I was not looking for a BIOS update, it was recommended by ThinkVantage System Update, the software executed it and damage the equipment.

Besides being a damage caused by the ThinkVantage System Update, the situation gets worse when the answer given by support insinuates that the customer turn off the computer, so it is a CID (Customer Induced Damage) and therefore the guarantee does not cover it. I do not understand how LENOVO may imply that the responsibility of the customer. Really disastrous.

In conclusion, if you are not needing to make a BIOS update, it is preferable to omit the BIOS update messages given to ThinkVantage System... Read more

A:Dell WD15 Desktop Dock - Step-by-step driver/firmware/BIOS installation instructions for XPS, Latitude and Precision notebooks [UPDATED 04-22-16]

Hi Brian
Thanks for being active on this issue. (This thread was closed - so had to use the TB-15 Thunderbolt thread above this one). Thanks for opening this one for WD-15
I've been having  most of the problems mentioned in the other Thunderbolt dock  thread .. USB problems, fan noise, not recognising on startup,
I tried the driver list above (for 5510 win7 64) and some refused to install because they were for xps product not  precision. However I when on 5520 support page (for the nth time) and found a new USB driver. ie > Chipset_Driver_V2WY5_WN32_1.16.32.1_A01.EXE
I've installed that but NOPE ... still has USB problems eg stuff like usb (2) keyboard not working. BUT unplug/replug the dock at USB C connection at laptop and it works !! (but this is a PITA and probably will wreck the socket in the long run).
I guess my point is please sync the support page and this support forum if you can, we all love Dell but would appreciate some reciprocating :-)

A:Dell TB15 Desktop Dock - Step-by-step driver/firmware/BIOS installation instructions for XPS, Latitude and Precision notebooks [UPDATED 04-22-16]

Unfortunately I see no updates to firmware or drivers from what I already have for the TB15 and my XPS 15 9550. I have experienced issues with the Realtek USB GBE Ethernet Controller Driver (generating BSOD's) and the mini-Displayport connection from the TB15 to an external monitor (screen blanks out). Time is running out for me. I will be forced to return my TB15 this week.

Hi everyone,
First of all, please excuse my English ;)
Someone gave me his former laptop N5010, the HDD was broken. I spent some money to buy a SSD and to upgrade the RAM, everything was working fine, and I don't know why I tried to update the BIOS...
I downloaded the A15 version on the Dell website, started the EXE file, and while updating from A4 to A15, the screen went black. I waited for a long moment and decided to remove the battery.
As a result, now the laptop is not working anymore.Black screen with beep while "booting".
I followed many "tricks" to recover the bios, they were all marked as solved for everyone but me, this one for exemple : http://bit.ly/2cdODDc
I extracted a rom file from the EXE bios update with Windows CMD prompt C:\BIOS.EXE /writeromfile , with Phoenix Tool I created a bootable USB, put the BIOS.ROM (renamed BIOS.WPH) on the flash drive, removed the battery, plugged the flash drive, hold the end button while plugging the AC cord ... But nothing interesting happened ...
I tried this solution from Dell's community : http://dell.to/2bRo4me
Still not working...
So, if you have any ideas, it will really help me.
Thanks,
Vincent,

I was downloading drivers on my dell opitplex 780. I decided to upgrade my bios from A08 to A15, since it was the only bios update. When i accepted the update to restart and begin the flash, the screen would not turn on and the desktop stayed powered on for an hour before i unplugged it. After that every time i turned it on the the same thing would happen:the screen would not turn on and the desktop stayed powered when the power was plugged. After researching, i removed the motherboard battery for a few minutes then replaced it. I did not see a jumper. When i restarted i the COMS had reset and i was able to get to "starting windows" but i barely complete before a blue screen appear and it restarts. Does any one know how i can fix this issue? I was updated my bios to see if it would take more updated memory.....i guess not. Oh and with either original or new memory it does the same thing. Sorry for the long explanation.

While updating the BIOS on an Elite Group P4VMM2 motherboard, the update failed for no apparent reason and now I'm left with a nice boat anchor. However, not being one to give up quite so easily, I began to investigate, and have seen some reports that some motherboard's BIOS can be recovered. I have emailed the manufacturer's support team repeatedly, but they must be too tied up with more important matters to respond, so I'll ask the question here: Is it possible to recover the BIOS on an Elite Group P4VMM2 (ver 8.1) and if so how do I go about it? Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated.

On several occasions HP Support Assistant has notified a BIOS upgrade available.  All have churned for a while, then reported that the update was unsuccesfull. I find this alarming to say the least, as BIOS updates are both critical, and potentially disastrous. Can you tell me why you keep on submitting updates that do not work? Should I bother to keep on trying to install them, or just consign them directly to the trash bin? This is a relatively new (this year) PC, and I find this severely undermines my confidence in the technical abilities of HP as a hardware provider. Windows 10ADSL then Ethernet cable (not wifi)18Meg down/1Meg upOS and Drivers kept up to date

I go and fix the time and date, afterwards I save it and exit, computer resets, same dilema, Bad CMOS, CHECKSUM error, try it again, same thing. The only way for me to get to windows is if i exit without saving, but then my time is always off, and its fairly annoying to constantly keep fixing it. Help anyone?

Hi, For reasons I deeply regret I attempted to flash BIOS on an Acer netbook with the wrong BIOS as it turned out.
I've tried Acer's crisis disk facility with the correct version of BIOS on a usb stick at boot up (pressing Fn Esc) but no go.
The boot up gets as far as the Windows XP splash screen then I get the BSOD. It won't start in safe mode either, although I can get into the BIOS. I read somewhere that taking out the cmos battery will reset bios to default but can't get the keyboard out to expose the m/board anyway.

Is there anything left to try before I relegate the netbook to a paperweight.

My machine was originally Windows 7 Home Premium and then when Windows 8 came out, I bought a license for 8.1 Pro. Updated the FW since then to F.26A and no issues at all. Now Windows 10 came out, updated it to the new OS, put an SSD to give it more grant, added memory and made it 16GB now running on a Micron 256SSD.  Recently, Windows 1607 came out, I had the update and noticed my internal webcam doesn't work. I thought of updating anything I can find and saw a new firmware release F.27. Downloaded it, run the executable, looks very promising and then on reboot it stopped!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The DVD Rom/CD writer drive was failing to read many discs so I took the bare drive out of a Toshiba laptop, put it in the Dell sleeve and it works. Not tested the CD burning though. Both old and new are Sony drives of similar 2003/4 age with different model numbers. DW-D56A-DS for the original one, I think. But when I boot the BIOS fails to recognise the drive and it wonít boot. Pulling the drive out whilst booting solves it.

Is there any way round this BIOS problem as the connector may wear out with this much disconnection? How can I tell what drives might work? I could buy a new £20 bare drive of a similar model. The Dell one with sleeve is 5 times the price, which is more than the laptop is worth.

Several second hand ones are for sale on eBay but I am reluctant as I read that some Dell models like this one were unreliable, so a second hand one will last a short time if it works at all.

Alternative might be just to replace the laser but are they available and can they be changed without going though a complex setup/calibration routine?

A:Dell Inspiron 510m DVD drive failed. BIOS detection

By trial and error with old DVD drives I had I found that a Sony SBW 242U from a Sony Vaio laptop is recognized by the BIOS. So there is presumably a narrow range of models that the BIOS will recognize.

But the tray bezel is slightly different so you canít swap over the bezels. Instead, if you want to retain the original drive eject lever, you have to file off some plastic from the new bezel. Check also itís not binding with the laptop case on one edge of the bezel. File as necessary.

After a fresh installation of Win10 i ran the Lenovo Update Tool to check for missing drivers. There was a BIOS update marked as critical so I installed it. The update was downloaded, the notebook rebooted and started installing the new BIOS. After maybe 10% of progress the notebook shut down. I tried to start it but the only life signs are two series of five beeps and the fans turning. I tried removing the battery pack and the bios battery for some hours, since this seemed to help some of the people with failed BIOS updates, but without success. Do I need a new motherboard now or is there another way to fix this?

I have just done a fresh install of windows 10 which worked perfectly. I then went to hp support to download the drivers and used the auto detect program to do that I then installed the drivers which went well. I then ran the bios update program. This failed. The computer was plugged in and fully charged. Now it is in the situation where it will not start and will not switch off. The screen is blank and the on off button is illuminated. I just tried holding the on off switch for ages but it had no effect. How can I switch it on? Any suggestions. Thanks for any help.

Had a major disaster last night.  Tried to update the BIOS on a Pavilion H8J91EA#ABU which failed; displayed boot block updated message (or something like that - can't remember exactly) message stayed on screen for ages and then blacked out.  Now the machine appears totaly dead.  I've tried the 'Windws-Key' and 'B' key bios recovery method to no avail. Does anyone know if this function is supported on the H8J91EA#ABU Thanks

My HP notebook 15, I thought needed BIOS updates. So I tried to update, failed when restarting. Needed to do recovery and manufacturing settings. Tried to back up files not excepting any of my flash drives. Something about NFTS formatting appears. Tried calling HP. No help. Ran system test and tried to repudate BIOS. Looks like it was already up to date.

Hi Guys,Great forum, lots of useful info, unfortunately, I was unable to restore my BIOS even after following most (if not all) suggestions/guides I have read here, and in other forums on the Internet. By posting this I hope that someone here has the knowledge on how to restore the BIOS of this particular laptop that I have. So, here is what happened:I got this laptop from a friend of mine who was going to throw it away as he got a new fancy one. I formatted it, installed fresh windows and started updating the drives from the HP Support page. After I updated everything I noticed there's a new BIOS release and ran the executable. The InsydeFlash Utility appeared, I accepted the warnings and started the flash process. Then on the 50-ish percent the screen froze and that was it. Waited for 5 min, nothing happened. Switched it off and here I go - I have a bricked laptop. Here's what I have tried so far and it did not succeed:First, I have no UEFI partition on the HDD.The Win+B key combination works, laptop beeps, some lights are blinking, even the USB stick with the BIOS file is blinking, as if it's reading it, but nothing happens. I think it is trying to read a file with specific name and extention and I loaded it with different combinations of filenames and extentions, but it doesn't work. Perhaps I don't know the required combination? Here's an extract from the platform.ini file:[Platform_Check]flag=2PlatformName=3069PlatformName2=306APlatformName3=306BPlatformN... Read more

Hello,

I have problems with updating the BIOS of my Tecra R10J. The current version is 1.4, and I want to update it to 3.0, so i have downloaded from Toshiba web site the correct file named "P006Cv300.exe" released from 11/04/2009. This is a BIOS update ONLINE into a real session of Windows 7. Simply, right click the compress exe, click run as admin and that's all but ......... for me it said :
*"[Error] The starting of service was aborted. User does not have administrator privileges"*

see below :
http://perso.orange.fr/100mo/bioserror.jpg

I've tried it with :
- closed AV, Firewall, etc ...
- disable UAC
- Run as administrator
- Tried with an another admin account
- Safe mode (bios update does not support safe mode)
- direct local administrator session

No change. Still the message "User does not have administrator privileges".
Need help please, found nothing on Google (similar Bios problem but not solved !!!!!)

Thank you

Tried updating BIOS to latest about a week ago. It said it was successful and then I restarted. Everything then went bad. Windows 7 crashed in a loop, asking if i wanted to fix it or boot normally. It couldn't fix itself. I could get into BIOS, but resetting to default didn't make a difference. I tried booting Linux. I got ACPI kernel panic and that was it. I put backup file onto USB, loaded crisis mode and it flashed as it should. After, I have not a BIOS screen or lenovo logo or anything. Backlight is on, screen is blank, no POST. I can try to flash back to original, but it doesn't access USB, even in crisis mode. It doesn't seem to be able to use the hard drive or the optical, nor any the eSATA drives I have tried. There's no beeping. The fan turns on, the feature board lights up. Fan speeds up. Eventually it powers off. I've tried repeatedly to get USB crisis working again but it will not try to use the USB. I can even change the fan speed with the feature button, and tapping the others makes them brighten and then dim. I've tried crisis mode, fn+B and fn+R, with every possible hardware parts installed or removed in every combination I can think of. Please help

Hi,

I know this is is quite old computer, but until now it was just enough good for my usage.
Anyway, after I have done a recovery of the Windows Vista OS that came with my computer, I got a notification from one of Toshiba tools that there is an updated BIOS available for my computer.
I've downloaded it and tried to perform an update. After the process had (probably) finished, the computer did not react to touchpad and keyboard. I was not sure if the update was really successful, especially because it looked like the computer was is frozen state. So I left it for next +/- 30 minutes but no change.
Then I decided to reset it as even the power button was not working. So I had to remove the battery and unplug the AC power.

... and the computer was (almost) dead then.

Now it is so that when I press the power button it seems to power up, but the screen remains blank, the fan is working and Windows is not booting. It just makes one short scratching noise from the DVD drive and this is all.

My question is, what is the recovery procedure in my situation ? I've tried to look for some potential help on the Internet and I found some forum posts or articles stating that there are some recovery procedures for different BIOSes, but what is the procedure for my BIOS ? The only thing that I found "working" was that if I press the power button holding Fn+Esc keys, the laptop powers on with flashing power button. But how to force BIOS recovery flashing procedure ?

G'day all,

As a favour to a friend, I upgraded her laptop's (model above) RAM (to 8GB) and her HDD to an 256GB SSD. After physically installing the new devices, restoring using the recovery disk, upgrading her Windows 7 x64 to Professional everything seemed fine. So I decided to apply the Toshiba Service Station recommended updates, one of which was the BIOS 2.70. Downloaded it, and pressed install... stepped through - restarted and got into the wizard where it warns me that there may be no screen, and only the blinking power indicator as activity - I then initiated the BIOS upgrade.

MISTAKE!

After 60 minutes of waiting, I powered the machine off but it won't boot - it powers up the drives but absolutely no beep codes or display - still flashing the power indicator. Bricked.

Ok - so now I google desperately for the model specific secret key codes and disk layout that will allow BIOS recovery from a USB flash drive or CD-ROM - NOTHING!

Anyone have any ideas about how to re-initiate the BIOS upgrade for this model from any of a) USB floppy, b) flash drive or c) CD-ROM?

Thanks in advance!

Hey all. I updated my friends system to the f.20 bios - and it now comes up that the bios update did not succeed, and then it restarts. This is an endless loop - which never lets me boot into windows - so I cannot go back to a previous version of the BIOS. I have been reading around the forums and discovered a method to try an emergency recovery by getting the rompaq bios and holding down the Windows Key + B when I turn on the system. Just bought an external USB Floppy drive to try this emergency recovery. I tried the USB - but it wouldn't work. I am getting different results here - but not what I want. With the USB Floppy plugged in: When I hold down Win+B - the caps light flashes  for a lot longer now, it looks like it initializes the floppy drive (green light comes on for just a moment) - but then nothing - just flashing caps lock for a bit and then finally a restart again into the doom loop. It never appears to begin to read the floppy disk or search for a bios file. What am I doing wrong? What can I try? Does the disk need to be leabeled a certain way? Does my BIOS file need to be renamed? Any help would be GREAT!!!!

I had a very similar experience.  Here is how I fixed it. Download sp41954.exe from here  or search for it.  Double-click on the file to launch the application.  If you are running Vista or higher, close the program, go to where it extracted (C:\swsetup\sp41954) and find the file FirmwareUpdater.exe.  Right-click on the file and select properties.  Click the Compatibility tab and select "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 3)".  Launch FirmwareUpdater.exe and create a bootable diskette.  If you are running XP, you can create the bootable diskette from the sp41954 directly. Power off the laptop.  Connect the USB Floppy drive with the newly created diskette to the laptop.  Hold down all four arrow keys while turning on the laptop.  Continue to hold down the four arrow keys until you see either the num-lock or cap-lock key flashing ( don't remember which).  It should be reading from the diskette.  After a minute or so, the laptop should reboot and operate normally. When I did this, I disconnected everything from the laptop and removed the battery.  I do not know if it was necessary to remove everything or not. Hope this helps.

My sister asked me to update her laptop (Toshiba Satellite Pro C660-16N; Part number PSC0ME-01S00SEN) from Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) to Windows 8 (64-bit).
So I did.

Then I went to Toshiba's UK website to check if there were any drivers I needed to install for Windows 8. The only one was a BIOS update (to BIOS v1.70). I have no idea what the previous BIOS version number was.

So I run the update application within Windows 8. Phoenix Technologies WinPhlash starts and then halfway through the update, the whole thing freezes.

The trackpad wouldn't move the cursor or anything. I had no option but to unplug the laptop from the wall and remove the battery. The laptop is not under warranty.

Of course, now it won't turn on. It beeps once when I press the power button, but the system doesn't turn on. A couple of minutes later, it sounds one long beep then two short beeps. It then keeps repeating this "one long beep, two short beeps" sequence every couple of minutes.

I have Googled and read website after blog after forum post, but nothing works. The links to the software suggested on these websites/blogs/forums are usually dead, so I cannot try what they suggest.

The most common solution is the Phoenix Crisis Recovery Tool. I have managed to download v1.0.0.4 which is supposed to enable me to make a bootable USB key. Hello, I recently bought a Lenovo z50-75. A few hours ago I wanted to update my bios. It was updating and suddenly the laptop restarted and there was just a black screen. I could hear the fans running, but the keyboard doesnt work because if I press Caps Lock the light won't turn on. I searched on google and there I found some solutions (with pressing keys, removing battery, etc.), but none seemed to work.I also found something about the CMOS battery. I opened my laptop but I couldn't seem to find it. What can I do now?  Best regards, Max

A:Lenovo Z50-75 bios update failed > black screen

Welcome to the Lenovo Community Max !

From viewing your model's Hardware Maintenance Manual there is a motherboard CMOS battery.  Unfortunately from the illustrations in the manual it would appear that the CMOS battery on the Z50-70 is soldered directly to the motherboard and can not be easily removed.  In that case try removing the main battery pack again and then press the power button for 60 seconds or longer.  Hopefully the CMOS battery will not be able to keep up with the power drain and will clear the CMOS.  Then reinstall the main battery pack and try powering it up.

For your reference, here is a link to the Hardware Maintenance Manual......

https://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_g_z_50_series_hmm.pdf

If that doesn't resolve the problem then I recommend you contact Lenovo Support for additional warranty service.

Hi guys,

Yesterday I did a fresh install of Windows 7 64-Bit and updated the laptop. The BIOS update sadly froze the PC and I had to shut it down. As one would expect... the Laptop didnt start.

When I press the poweer button, the Powerbutton and the Satellite Nameplate lights up and I get one long beep followed by two short beeps + the screen remains black.

Could someone tell me the key combination I need to press in order to enter the recovery mode to reflash the BIOS?

Does anyone know if I need a floppy USB drive to reflash the BIOS or if flashing from a USB thumb drive is possible... I dont see how I could fit a 2,3 MB Bios file on a 1,44 MB floppy disc.

A:Satellite P300-212 (PSPCCE) - BIOS update failed

Hey,

There is no BIOS recovery mode that you can enter by pressing a key combination. Therefore special BIOS recovery tools are necessary they are compatible to the notebook.

That means the ROM module where BIOS is stored can only be reflashed from an authorized service provider because the guys have special tools for this.

Please get in contact with the technicians, they will help to sort this out:

During the update process it showed an error: "ME FW Update Failed: Internal error: FWU_Buffer " - please see the photo below. Although the update failed on the Management Engine part, it still boots up and running OK. I tried couple of times to update the BIOS, and each time I got the same error. I tried to flash the A12 and A11 BIOS as well, A12 gives same error, and A11 has the same Management Engine version hence no use.
Any help on this is very much appreciated!

Hi Stone3t,
Can you provide a screen shot showing the current BIOS version?
