computer causing router to lose internet connection

Q: computer causing router to lose internet connection

Hello and thank you for taking the time to look at my issue.

I have 2 laptops and 1 desktop all connected to the same router, the 2 laptops are connected via wifi and the desktop PC is currently connected via an Ethernet cable, both laptops run windows 7 while the desktop runs windows XP and more or less every time the desktop is booted after a few minutes of normality connection to the internet is lost and the yellow triangle on windows 7 appears so to fix this I have to go into my routers settings via and reboot which then solves the problem and all machines function as they should including the desktop.

this initial disconnection is very annoying as you can imagine and I am fed up with having to reboot my router every time the desktop is turned on, there have also been past occurrences of an IP conflict but these alerts have not occurred for some time but I thought I would mention this in case it is of any significance. Many thanks

Strange issue. Try these "routine" fix attempts ...

Make sure you have the latest correct ethernet driver for the desktop. If you already have it reinstall it anyhow in case the installed instance is corrupted.

Make sure you have the latest router firmware; then reset it to factory defaults and reconfigure it.

My network has 3 computers connected through lan cables to an IP switch that connects to the gateway. The gateway is running the latest m0n0wall -1.33. I just got and connected a wireless router to my network (4th lan position on the switch) - setting it up as an access point. As soon as the router turns on, the wireless devices connect but the WIRED comps lose connection. My wired comps are running Win XP sp2. The wireless devices are a laptop running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit and an iPhone. Any advice?

A:Wireless router causing wired computers to lose connection.

Hi Tron and Welcome to SF,

Looks like the Gateway is also a router then you added a second router.

Might need to reconfigure the 2nd router, the Gateway's setting stays the same. Disable DHCP from the 2nd router and assign a Static IP Address to the second router with the same Subnet for ex. Gateway's IP is, you may assign a Static IP to the second router.

See if that helps and let us know.

ADSL internet connection slowed to almost zero (10 Kbps! - the connection got slower & slower through time).

contacted ISP who suggested connecting to the test socket.

decided first of all to connect an old router to the master (but not test) socket together with different cabling & splitter/microfilter - everything starting working almost perfectly (apart from downstream data rate was considerably lower than expected each time I connected - between about 1400 & 1600 Kbps - I have max. 8 Mbps).

when I connected back my current router everything continued to be OK (apart from low downstream data rate) - until I would restart the current router and everything went back to very very slow!

I then decided to replace current router with old router, but this time using the same telephone socket, cables etc. as for the current router.

Again everything started working well, but this time the downstream data rate is 6496 Kbps! I swapped back the current router, and everything is at this moment going fine.

BUT I just know that if I restart my current router it will be back to very very slow again!

does anybody know what's going on?!

(p.s. I had a problem a few months ago where the internet would go down for a time, sometimes for hours, but the ISP had no idea what was going on. I think it could have been a NAS drive connected to the router that was causing the issue - is this possible? It would seem that disabling the NAS drive would fix the problem - it is stil... My mother's computer periodically loses internet connectivity. This happens regardless of the browser (IE or Firefox). She must restart her computer to get access again. This happens regardless of her internet connection. She uses verizon at her home and accesses through my wireless router when visiting. This also happens if she is on a public access network such as a hospital.

Her OS is Windows Vista.

It is not a problem with high memory usage. There are no other processes or applications running when this happens.

Any ideas how to fix it?

I'm pretty good at following instructions but don't know where to start...

Thanks for any help you can provide.

I am using Mindows XP - SP2 and Router: Netgear: RP614v3

Unfortunately certain aspects of my internet will randomly stop working. By turning the power off on the router and then turning it back on these things will start working again. They may then stop working again 5 minutes later or work fine for a day.

Viewing websites always works fine but the following things tend to stop working:

Uploading by FTP to my website using any FTP program
Checking email through Outlook express.
Secure log in pages on websites

By resetting the router (turning it off and on) they start working again.

I use Outpost firewall and as far as I know it is configured correctly - the problem still occurred using different firewalls.

Any Ideas??

I have been fighting seemingly intermitent losses of internet connection for several months. I have tried all suggestions I received including getting a new router. My router resets and starts a new connection essentially every 30 minutes. My current set up is a desktop connected by Ethernet cable to my D-Link 625. If I turn off my laptop or disconnect the Ethernet cable my router stays connected to the internet. Otherwise it drops the connection about every 30 minutes. I tried disconnecting at 28 minutes and reconnecting at 35 (watching the Router status page from my wireless laptop) Upon reconnection the router rebooted. I have tried not running all the following things that might seem related to my problem but the problem continues whether or not I have them running on my PC: Apache Server, FTP Filezilla Server. TIVO Server, TIVO Desktop, Google Desktop, Norton Firewall, and a weather widget from ActiveAccess. I think that is the list. Now most of the suggestions I have found seem to assume there is a wireless problem before determining that when my PC is off or disconnected I have no problem I treid 1) buying a new Router 2) installing filters on my phones, 3 removing all my phones from the house 4) disconnecting the wireless TIVO boxes on my TV, 5) Uninstalling UPnP (I;m not really sure I got that done on my PC because the directions sent me to the Windows firewall which I do not use but I did uncheck the box on the router.) I think that is about the laundry list. I am o... Read more

Hello I have been getting very high memory usage from svchost.exe (localsystemnetworkrestricted)I normally notice it between 90K and 110+K memory usage. Usually when it is that high I notice I am unable to access the internet. At first I thought it was a Firefox thing since it was getting connection rest messages then I noticed Thunderbird would not send or receive messages so I tested in IE same unable to access any webpage my network icon shows me connected. I am thinking I have a malware or something causing svchost.exe to get that high and stop me from accessing the internet. As soon as I stop the svchost process I am able to surf again.I have looked and looked and can not find any resolve to this issue. I have scanned with windows defender, Avast, Malwarebytes all come up clean. Any help would be great.Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum, at the suggestion of staff. ~ Animal

As the title states when I turn on my old PC (Windows XP SP3) my Dell N5110 (Windows 7) laptop loses its internet access (the yellow exclamation mark shows up). When I restart the router the connection is lost after a couple of minutes. Sometimes restarting doesn't fix it at all. Windows Troubleshooter went to the state of fixing this issue, fixing that issue and then there was no status message displayed just the green loading bar flowing into the void. When I turn off the PC, the laptop receives the connection. What kind of a conflict is occurring?

I have two computers running Windows XP networked through a D-Link DI 604 Broadband Ethernet Router, which in turn is connected to a Siemens Speedstream 4100 Ethernet ADSL Modem. I continually lose the connection and have to press "reset" on the router (actually insert a paperclip into the reset hole.) The period of time that it stays connected can vary from a few minutes to several hours but is usually about an hour. Occasionally I will need to repeat it a time or two before it connects. I bought the router two or three years ago and had the same problem then but I moved and haven't had it or my second computer connected to the internet until yesterday when, of course, it started doing the same thing it had before. Do I need to replace the router or might it perhaps be caused by a setting? I am, unfortunately, in a state of blissful ignorance about networking. Thanks.

-Here is my setup so far. I have a vista machine with 2 lan cards, one from motherboard, one on pci. The lan from motherboard is connected to the WAN port on my router. I have alltel wireless internet that uses ICS through that. The lan card on my pci bus is connected to a LAN port on the same router. When i am not using ics i disable the lan on my motherboard and vice versa. I am using the second LAN on my pci bus that is connected to one of the LAN ports on my router so my computer can use MCE and DIRECTV2PC. I have another line connected to a LAN port on the same router going to a switch which is connected to my 360 and my directv receiver.
-Here is the problem. Say im using DIRECTV2PC and the xbox gets turned on, what happens is i lose connection to my directv and my computer only sees the xbox and vice versa. I am confused on why that is, it should see both at the same time and not lose connection to any one of them right?

A:I lose connection to some devices on my switch connected to my router.

whoa man never heard of that kind of set up before. try connecting your internet to the WAN port on the router and connecting the rest of your stuff to the inputs on the router. its a little less complicated this way.
sounds like your computer is controlling your internet and getting confused... hope this info is usefull.

So this started about a few weeks ago after I've installed new modem from TWC.  But I don't think the modem or router (I own a separate router, it's Airport Extreme) is the issue because I can connect without issues using tablet or smartphone.  When i open an internet browser from my desktop, it just won't start or it just freezes. When i restart the computer, sometimes the internet browser will work and everything seems to be normal again.  Then a few minutes later when I open a new internet browser again, the same thing happens.  It just stops loading completely and then it freezes.  The same thing happens when I log in to minecraft, it just won't connect. The issue seems to only occur when I open an internet browser or a program that uses online connection.  I thought the issue may be IE so I downloaded Chrome but the same thing happens. It's anytime I try to open a program that uses Internet.  The program sometimes would start but eventually slows down or the program won't start at all until I restart the computer a few times.  Can someone please help? It's been extremely annoying to have to restart your computer every time the internet browser doesn't work.  By the way, the modem and router don't show signs of problems when i experience these issues.  I have an old laptop and can connect just fine using wifi so I think it's my computer.  Could this be malware?  I don't get redirected to sites or get pop-ups. ... According to my opinion you should try to disable unwanted pop ups and plugins or may also install some popup blocker tool like smart popup blocker, adfender amd adwcleaner that helps to block pop-ups, clean cookies, and optimize your Internet-connection settings.

I have 7 devices connected to my Netgear Router 600/3700v2 and the devices keep disappearing. I believe I have found the solution. Connect to your Netgear Router (you will see BASIC and ADVANCED options) and select the ADVANCED settings. Click the tab below ADVANCED SETTINGS and in the drop down menu select UPnP. You will see on the top of the screen ADVERTISEMENT TIME TO LIVE - this setting DEFAULTS TO "4" which is okay for "normal" home use (well, it didn't work for me). This setting is what controls your attached devices. If you keep losing them, try increasing the settings until they remain visible. I tried 5 first - no go. Then I tried 8 and I haven't lost the devices since. Hope this works for you!

I noticed problems began after the first time in six years I tried to use the Windows Print and Fax Viewer Wizard to print pictures. The whole thing was so slow as to effectively cause the computer to freeze. Afterwards, I began to "leak" memory. Over time, as I browsed the Internet, Windows has somehow saved pictures from websites I have visited without me asking it to do so. It has also saved faxes attached to emails. I am unable to delete them.

I have gone to Delete Temporary Internet Files (I delete these daily and always have done). There is no box to check to delete "offline content" as I have read in various places. The upshot of this has been that Drive C is being loaded down with pictures saved without my consent or knowledge. I do not not know how to delete them and stop the problem. It apparently has to do with a DLL file. I tried to do what was suggested in the following link:

See this link

This is what came up: DllRegisterServer and DllInstall in shimgvw.dll

From there I was once again totally lost. I know that this is behind my loss of memory, but I do not know how to reset or fix it. Help!

As some people told me I only needed to add memory to my computer, I added 512 MB today, and it did NOT solve the problem. With over 700 MB of RAM, I still show only 20% free space on Drive C. I have not added any new programs in ages, and I am sure it all has to do with ... Read more

I recently connected a Linksys wireless Router to my DSL internet with Windows XP. I have a desktop wired direclty to the router and a laptop that use the wireless connection. I can access the internet for about 4 hours before the internet is lost on both the desktop and laptop. I can't gain access again, on either computers, unless I remove the router, wire the modem directly to the desktop, and restart everything. Then, I can go through the router install process again to get the wireless connection for another four hours. What can I do to so I don't have to reinstall the router everyday?

A:Lose internet after a few hours with wireless router

First, upgrade to the latest router firmware.
Second, next time you get disconnected, take a look at the router status page and see what is the problem or if the router itself has crashed.

Nothing unusual about router crashes. When it still keeps kicking the bucket after a firmware upgrade, try disabling all kinds of services on the router like packet filtering, upnp, dhcp, etc.

Recently I've notice that while either writing an email(Thunderbird) or on the Internet(Firefox), the screens dims down and loses the color and sits there for about 30 seconds and then switches back to my desktop and I lose my email, if writing something, or closes the webpage I was previously on. I am still with Ubuntu 7.10. A window then appears telling me that it is Not Responding. Why is this happening now and what could be the causes of dropping the connection? Anyone?

A:Lose Internet connection

Dimming means "busy".

I'm not sure if I can answer your question, but maybe provide some insight.

When Ubu launches a background process, like installing new software or performing an update, the screen fades out during the install to prevent you from doing anything at that critical time. So that's what's going on there.

If the system is "greaying out" while doing online stuff, I suspect Ubu is trying to install some app/resource, failing, and crashing your program.

I don't use Thunderbird myself, though I don't know what Firefox needs that Thunderbird might share.

I'm in Windows at the moment, so reply to this message and I'll jump into Linux to see if I can be of more help.

(BTW: I'm using the 64bit Ubuntu 8.04, so my results my vary.)

do the other 3 laptops lose connection at all - or is just this one laptop

can we see an xirrus screen shot from the faulty laptop

make and model of the laptop

may also need a wireless driver update
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply ( the site now appears to require a business email, so try the direct link below)

I'm a newbie here, looking for help and guidance. I have taken on a new client who has the following setup, BT Infinity, Vigorpro 5510, and SBS 2011 server. I was involved with unpacking and seting up the equipment to get client up and running. I have never setup a firewall before, and after contacting Draytek, they guided to get BT infinity, 5510 to talk so that the server was able to get onto the internet. The setup was then left in its default state.

All was fine until lately, the client keeps losing internet approx same time most days.

My problem is how do i get the 5510 properly configured to talk to BT infinity, and sbs 2011. I always get lost when it come to playing with IP address. Also the client has a fixed IP address supplier by BT, so want to know how to setup the vigorpro with this address.

The configuration is as follows:-

BT ASDL modem, dhcp switched off, ip addr, static ip 8x.xx.xx.xx

Vigorpro 5510:-
Wan 1 IP -
sub mask -
Gateway IP -
primary IP -

Wan 2 - Not configured

Lan 1st IP -
1st submask -

sbs 2011
def gateway
Pref DNS

PC assigned IP from sbs 2011

Can anyone review the about, and help identify any problems.

Where should I enter the BT Static IP address on the draytek.

THanks to all in advance

When uploading any file (size not an issue) - the computer loses internet connectivity and will not reconnect unless the modem is reset. There are other computers on the wireless network that are still connected (stay connected). I call my IP and they are able to ping the modem (before the reset and while my browser displays the cannot connect message). This seemed to happen suddenly. I uploaded to flickr on a Monday and then on Tuesday I could not upload. I did a virus scan and no viruses were found. The antivirus software I use is current, that is the subscription has not lapsed. I went to speedtest dot net for other reasons and the same problem occurs when that test does the upload test. As long as I do not try to upload I stay connected to the internet. I am able to send email. As soon as I upload the connection is lost.

My computer has Vista. At least a couple times per day we lose the internet connection. It never seems to happen while we are actively working on the computer. We will come back some time later, and it will not be connected. Occasionally, if I go to the network connection icon on the bottom right of the computer and click on it, it will reconnect. But most times it will not reconnect, and the only solution we have found is to restart the computer. We have had the computer approximately 3 years. When we first got it, we had Time/Warner for the internet provider. We never had this problem with them. About 2 years ago, we switched to AT&T. It seemed to start at that time. I have talked to them, and had a service person out a few times. We tried switching the ethernet connection to a different port, but this didn't solve it. They replaced the box, but still did not fix. They think it is computer related because we can always get reconnected every time by just rebooting the computer. But this is a real pain when we have to do it 2 to 3 times per day. HELP!!!!!!

It also seems that if a site on the internet is left running for several hours (inadvertently) while we are away from the house, when I go to get on to a different site, I get "No Internet Connection" and have to unplug then replug the router.

Since I got this new laptop (and my son has the same issue w/ his Windows 10 laptop as well) we cannot maintain an internet connection for more than maybe 5-10 minutes on a good run. Often times we are booted off within less than a minute. This is incredibly frustrating when you are working, only to find that your work has not been saved, or when gaming and you lose your game progress.

Yeah its me again...

this problem started after you guys helped me with crypt3.dll problem back in January. I've been hoping it would clear itself.

Combofix finally destroyed crypt3.dll but now my internet connection is dropped randomly but consitently after the fix but not before.

I am running xppro on a amd xp2600.

actually I havent been ignoring it but trying find a patter but I cant. I can browse for hours with no problems but then I just lose my connection on next page connect. Sometimes its within the same site other times its chasing a link...sometimes it hours and others 1/2 hour.

I repaired XPpro, reloaded IE7, reset all my protocols, reset IE preferences to default (2X) but nothing has worked.

I have not tried anything with SOCKS yet...

the only thing I know to do is reboot to restore IE....I dont have firefox on this system (I have 2 computers that you have helped me with now) so I dont know if that would be affected. I can install it if you think it will help.
BTW I was hopeful the Steelers would win the SuperBowl this year right up until Eli scored with :35 on the clock...then I knew we had no chance ..... I never give up my team.....

A:Sudden Lose Of Internet Connection

WinSock XP Fix offers a last resort if your Internet connectivity has been corrupted due to invalid or removed registry entries. It can often cure the problem of lost connections after the removal of Adware components. Follow the instructions in this article: WinSock Fix Techniques. If that doesn't work, run WinSock2Fix. When you run it, click on ReG-Backup button first to backup the registry, and then click on the Fix button.

My computers are connected through a linksys hub to a cable modem. All the computers act normal except for mine.

Out of nowhere, I started having a problem where I partially lose internet connection.

My AIM still works, any bittorrent downloads continue, but certain other internet programs stop working. I can't connect to webpages and my Logmein client becomes disabled.

If I restart, log off and on, or release and renew my IP, everything works fine again, but that is to much of a pain to have to do constantly.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Now I find that each time I startup I have to go to the Network Connection, Disable it, then Enable it to get connectivity to the internet. I have exhausted all known resources both within the system and with close knowledgeable friends. Any thoughts? Thanks......

Right, this would be my first time using this forum, but as I'm really getting tired of this problem I thought I might as well ask to see if anyone knows anything.

So, the deal is that I just randomly lose internet connection and I can only reconnect by disconnecting my network cable and plugging it in again. Thing is, while I'm not connected to the internet when this happens I still have connection to the router.

I've thought that it could either be my network cable of possibly the network card, but as I never have internet problems when I'm on a Lan at friends that shouldn't be the case.
And so I eventally concluded it should be the router that's the problem, even though no other computer on the network suffers this problem, so recently changed the router from a D-link DI-604 to a D-link Dir-655, to no avail.

And so, having gotten a bit tired of having this problem for around a year now, I'm hope you might have some insight to what the problem might be.
Thank you in advance.

A:Randomly lose internet connection

So basically your wired to the router and the cable is securely connected and you keep dropping connections to the internet even with the same cable at a friends house? Try another dns server like google or something.

I have a Sony Vaio desktop that is connected to the internet via a Motorola SB modem and Linksys Wireless-B 2.4 GHz 802.11b broadband router. This computer is connected via cable- not wireless.

I very frequently lose my connection to the internet- for example, in the last few hours, it has lost connection 6 times. Generally, if I reset the IP address (by unplugging the router and modem) it will come back. However, this is very annoying and time consuming.

Is there a way to check and see if either the router or the modem may be faulty? I would prefer to check before going out and buying stuff I may not need. I run spyware, adware, anti-virus on a regular basis. OS is Windows XP, using IE6 (waiting for bugs to work out of IE8 to upgrade).

Hey guys,

I'm new here. I have struggled with my internet on my laptop for so long now, that I have been pushed to look for a forum, and this one seemed very nice!
I have all my system info on my profile. This has been happening to my computer now, and my previous computer, all on the same router and with the same ISP. My ISP is called Knology.

Okay, so I have the little Knology cable box in the office connected to my Linksys 2.4 GHz router. My ISP replaced the cable box earlier this year, but my router is at least 5 years old.

My mom has a computer upstairs, but I am unsure if it happens to her. My internet problem is getting worse and worse. I used to maybe lose my internet connection once or twice in a day, but now I lose internet connection every 20 minutes!

The only ways I have known to fix it were to:

1. Unplug my cable box and router, then plug the cable box back in, then router.

2. Disconnect and reconnect to my router on my computer.

3. Disable my wireless adapter on my computer and then enable it again.
Even now, these don't even always work. A month ago (before it got worse) I could at least do one of those three steps and gaurantee my internet would come back, but now it's not even a sure thing, or I have to do them each 2 times.

I feel like bashing my wireless router, or pouring lighter fluid in it and lighting it up.

The problem is, I don't know whether it's my computer's adapter causing the problem or my router, or eve... Read more

A:I lose internet connection every day in the same time?

I'd be inclined to say that for that to happen so regularly it would have to be an intentional setting. My younger brothers' computer has similar no-internet times because my Dad set up the household router to block them at certain periods of the day. I also installed a web filter (K9) on my own machine with a similar facility for creating regular no-internet times. I don't know your situation, but you may need to look at whether someone's set up such a restriction, ideally by asking the people who might have the capacity to do so.

If that is not the case, from a technical perspective, the following information may be useful for us. Obviously you'll need to save or print these instructions as you won't be able to get them once the internet goes down.
At some point between 2 and 7:
Press Windows and R at the same time,
Type CMD and press Enter.
Type Ping and press Enter.
Type Ping and press Enter.
Type ipconfig /all and press Enter.
Right click on the window, choose Select All and press Enter.
Paste that information into a text file, save it, and copy it into your reply once the internet comes back online.

Check your power options Power Plan - Restore Default Settings

Either that or I'm thinking irq conflict between the drivers for the two. Most likely a driver issue if so have you ever run driver verifier on your machine?

I have a new lan setup which includes and new Linksys Gigibit router, WRT310N and Gigibit adapter cards-Linksys EG1032. I finally have eveything work but I look my internet connection on my hard wired machines after about 10 minutes if I am not constantly accessing the internet. I have a laptop on wireless and its internet connection is ok. The lan works all the time. All of these machines run XP sp2. I have the power saving feature turned off on the adapter cards-I have two machines setup like this and they both lose their internet connections. I had the WRT310N router setup on 10/100 adapters for about a day and I did not lose the internet connection during that time-so I think it relates to the adapter cards. Following are the settings for the adapter:

802.1q/1p VLAN tagging disable
Flow Control enable
Jumbo Frame disable
Link Speed/Duplex Mode Auto negotiation
Network Address nothing
Offload Checksum Tx/Rx checksum
Offload TCP_LargeSend enable

Any one know what might be wrong?

Please help...not sure what's causing this...

sometimes while surfing, my internet connection goes dead. My modem lights are lit properly (cable), and the connection comes back after a reboot.

It doesn't seem to be an ISP problem since the reboot always takes care of it, but who knows.

My ISP (Comcast) suggested a new network card might be needed?

I'm using windows ME (i know lol, it sucks), I use sygate as a firewall, and AVG antivirus. I run ad-aware and spybot weekly, and yes I update definitions.

I've been experiencing this issue for awhile now and haven't found a rhyme or reason for it occurring, but whenever I open a folder my internet connection will stop and go to limited access. I don't really know what information I can give that can give hint to the problem, but some suggestions would be great.

A:Lose Internet connection when I open a folder

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.
What type of internet connection do you have?. For example, is it through a wifi set up, ADSL, wireless broadband, high speed cable, etc..
Does opening any particular folder cause this problem, or is the folder associated with a particular website that you are visiting.

But whenever we tried to view other computer's shared files on the network the whole network would lose internet connection for a few moments and then would come back once we stopped viewing other computer's files.

I have no idea what would cause this or how to fix it. If anyone has any idea's it would be greatly appreciated because I will be moving here at the end of this month and would like to get this problem out of the way now.

The title pretty much says it all. If I eject a CD while online I temporarily lose my internet connection. Also when I turn off (dismount) my external Hard Drive I lose my internet connection as well.(I lose the connection & then it resets itself!) Any Ideas as to why this may be happening?

A:Solved: Eject CD & Lose Internet Connection!

For everyone's info I present the following from Linksys/Cisco Community Forums:

From yleclerc:

Yes, it seems to be a known problem. Whenever the Wireless Network software is installed, the wireless adapter may disconnect when:

-- Connecting another USB device
-- Disconnecting any USB device
-- Inserting CD / DVD
-- Ejecting CD / DVD
-- Ejecting Digital camera medias

No real solution since Linksys has not revised the drviers / software.

The "other" solution of using RALink drivers does not seem to be a true solution. Most of the time, the RALink driver will not detect the Linksys adapter.

from Star:

I solved this by uninstalling the Linksys Wireless Network Monitor. I no longer disconnect from the internet when I turn off a USB or Firewire device (ipod, canon mx850 printer, external hard drive). However, using Windows Zero Configuration isn't a perfect solution. The drawback is that I have frequent 2-5 second freeze ups in World of Warcraft with WZC, especially in combat. So my workaround is to stop the WZC service once I have booted up and have an internet connection. It is quite annoying!

Thank You Linksys....

When I'm listening to my radio on Windows Media Player it works perfectly fine when it's highlighted (by clicking on it *duh*)
, but as soon as it's moved to the background by either minimizing WMP or just by opening any other progam, even non internet ones like My Computer it loses it's internet connection...
The same happens for example to: Newsleecher, Skype or google chrome and have a feeling every other program as well.
So for short, when a program is moved to the background it loses it's internet connection and when it's highlighted again (by clicking on it again *duh*) it's connection starts working again.

I'm baffled by not knowing what the problem is, I even checked the power settings on my computer but it's on the High setting.
I'm using Windows 8 on a Desktop computer.
Thanks in advance
Ps. sorry for my simple use of english grammar

Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and if you have a separate modem, the make and exact model of the modem.

Please make a note of the status of the lights on the modem and on the router when working normally - post that light status here.
Now when the internet disconnects make a note of the status of the lights for the modem and router here again. also note which have changed.

I've been having a strange internet connection for a while. Mainly via wifi, but also via cable sometimes. I have another post of losing the Ethernet adapter once in a while, but that seems to fix itself when I manage to reconnect to internet through wifi. That problem boiled down to this "Incorrect Network Key", which was what always blocked internet access via wifi.

When I cannot get connection via wifi, I run the Diagnose Connection problem in IE7. (I'm on XP2). A couple of times it has told me there's an issue with the Winsock and that it will proceed to reset it. But most of the time it tells me the Network Key is incorrect, although the wireless connection indicates that I am connected properly and have an excellent signal. It prompts me to reenter teh Nw Key in Network Connections. When I do, the existing NW Key is always different from what it should be. It also happens if I just open the Nw Connections panel and check the Wireless Nw properties for my wifi nw. What I have entered as a correct key, is not what appears.

It is like it doesn't "save" the Nw Key.

Where I live, there are two computers connected. My XP2, and an iMac G5, along with its own wifi nw for Apple TV etc. There are also other wifi nws in the building, but all protected. Also, these are not on my preferred nws list.

Any ideas?

Frequently, my laptop will lose the ability to browse the web, but it can still connect to the wireless access point. The only way I've found to resolve the problem is to turn off the wireless adapter and turn it back on. This would indicate a hardware problem but for the fact that the computer can still connect to the access point. My Tivo and PDA can both connect to the internet while the laptop is having this problem.

I've tried reinstalling the adapter drivers and updating to newer ones from Intel's web site rather than Dell's. I've run sfc /scannow. I've installed Firefox, but the browsing problem occurs with both browsers.

Strange issue.

Since you have the same problem in a different OS, it sounds like a hardware issue (monitor/motherboard), or even some type of RF interference. Maybe someone could give a better opinion.

I have tried everything I could think of. For the last 2 months or so, I have been losing my Internet connection. At first it was about once a day, now it is about once every 2 hours. But check this out:
I have a cable modem from Charter, that is connected to a Airlink AR690W 300N router (I know cheap router) I have 2 hardwired Dell PC (couple years old) both running windows XP with the latest updates. I have 3 Vista Laptops and one Mac notebook, a network printer and a NAS. I also have VIOP phone service through Viatalk. That along with all the TV stuff, you get the picture. To sum up:
cable modem from Charter
Airlink AR690W 300N router
2 hardwired Dell PC w/XP
3 Vista Laptops
1 Mac Laptop
Network Printer
VOIP Service

When connected to the internet I have full access for a seemingly random amount of time. Sometimes I can go days, other times only a few minutes. Usually it is more like 30 minutes.

When the problem happens I cannot read email or browse the internet. I can still ping and access network computers. The only way to regain access appears to be a reboot.

I have wireless broadband.
All computers are running Windows 2000 SP 4.
I have an SMC Barricade 7004BR router and an Asante FriendlyNET switch.
All computers are protected by up to date firewalls (Sygate) and
antivirus (Panda).

The problem occurs when I directly connect to the broadband modem as well.

I have a Linksys WRT160N wireless/wired router. Prior to last week, I had that hooked up to my XP machine. The workstation was wired and we used the wireless capability for my iTouch and our Wii. I got the router and iTouch in May and haven't had a problem with it. As soon as I'm in the house, my iTouch connected and stayed connected. Never ever an issue. A week ago, I purchased and setup a new workstation, an HP p6214y. Because neither workstation has a wireless network card yet, I have them sitting next to each other and both wired into the Linksys router. I can't recall what steps I used to access the XP machine to copy files over, but I did. Somewhere in the process, the W7 machine added the router to the network, renaming it and even changing the password on it. Ever since then, I constantly lose my wireless connection on my iTouch. Most of the time, when I turn my iTouch back on it has lost the connection and I have to connect. Annoying, but it wouldn't be so back if it connected immediately when I went into settings and tried connecting to the wireless network. But it takes at least 20 clicks on thing to finally get connected. Then I stay connected again until I set it down and pick it up again. I have tried rebooting the router. I have tried resetting my router settings (also renaming and changing the password) using the IP address and the reset button on my router. I disabled the Power Management on my NIC card. Hello All,

We have a Dell in the office that suddenly will not stay connected to the internet, either wired or wirelessly. It connects for about 2 minutes, and the I get "page cannot be displayed" message. Wirelessly it shows as connected to wifi router, but again the access disappears after a couple of minutes. I have run multi-anti virus scans, Malware Bytes, AVG, Microsoft etc. I see nothing.

The PC is connected to an office server, and there is no issues accessing it.

I have tried to reset the Winsock. I have tried turning off the Windows Firewall. I Installed a newer version of AVG (old one couldn't be removed - removal requires internet access!). No sure what to try next.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I would say try to reset the actual internet connection. Unplug it and wait about a minute; then plug it back and and let it reboot. If you have a modem and router; reboot those if you have those and try connecting again.

I've searched here for this problem, and it seems that others have had it as well.

I just got a new PC and it's running Vista. Each time I put it into sleep mode, when I come back, I have no wireless internet. I can either reboot or unplug the wireless receiver, either work, but it's a pain

Repair/diagnose does NOT work

For what it's worth, I had another PC, less than a year old, and it does the exact same thing. I just assumed that the old one was just wierd and my solution was to not put it into sleep.

We do have a hard wired one, it does NOT lose connection when in sleep mode. My internet comes back just fine upon unplugging the receiver/replugging it.

I have tried the solution I unchecking the 'allow the system to put this device to sleep'..that did not work

I don't know what other info you need.

Oh, and the PC's are pretty DISSIMILAR in what they have on them for hardware, which leads me to believe it's a Vista thing. They don't even have the same spyware stuff..

any suggestions are welcome

I'm having an unusual problem with my computer. At random intervals I will lose my connection to the internet for several minutes. Then it will come back like nothing happened.
When this happens, the Windows Network & Sharing Center shows that my connection is fine, and when I run troubleshooters they don't find any problems, even though I can't get online. It's not the browser; I try both Firefox and Chrome, but neither will work when this issue crops up.
Some days it doesn't happen at all, and some days it happens several times in one day.
My computer is running Windows 7, and I am using a wired connection (ethernet cable) to connect to my router. There are three other computers on the same network, connected to the same router (one wired, two wireless), and they don't have this problem. I got this computer a few months ago to replace an old one, and the old one (connected with the same cable to the same router) didn't have this problem either.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this?
Thanks in advance!

to Bleeping Computer Community sjnew

At random intervals I will lose my connection to the internet for several minutes.
My computer is running Windows 7, and I am using a wired connection (ethernet cable) to connect to my router.

The first thing to verify is if you loose internet connection is check the LAN port (led light) of the router from where your computer is connected. Or vice-versa, the LAN or Ethernet port of your desktop. There are signal lights indicator showing that it is connected (illuminating) or none if not. Try a different cable or reseat properly just in case also as a test.

I run Vista Home Premium on my Dell Inspiron Notebook. Something that is a recent problem in the last few weeks; often when I have to hit the power button to wake up the notebook from sleep mode (hibernation), I lose the internet connection, but still have local connection. I disconnect and try to connect but can't, but when I reboot it automatically reconnects fine to local and internet. I say often, as sometime after a short sleep it is still connected......

Have checked all settings and everything seems fine, but maybe I missed something. This never use to happen. Only change I have made I can think of is I installed COMODO firewall a few weeks back......about the same time I recall this starting.

My wife's PC with Norton Internet Security always gets the internet connection after wakeup without problem. The two computers are not networked but use the same wireless router.
The only other thing I did was stop Superspywareblaster from opening at startup so I could just use it to scan occassionally. I also run Nod32.

Any ideas as I am a bt baffled by this glitch?

I haven't really had many problems being disconnected anymore, but my connection does seems to slow down severely quite often. In fact, this happens practically every single day. Usually when this happens, I change the wireless channel, reset my modem and router, then reboot, and this solves the problem most of the time. But eventually, I just have the same problem again. And it gets painstakingly slow, too.

A:Wireless router causing internet slowdowns

Your title says that the problem is caused by the wireless router. You know this because the problem doesn't happen when you are connected directly to the modem?

Since you say the problem is the router, have you tried just resetting it and not messing with the modem or computer to get working again?

Sometimes when I start/reboot my computer I loose my internet connection. I unplugged my router and directly connected my computer to my modem, whala no problem! When I have my router in place and my computer connected to any 1 of 4 Ethernet ports on the router sometimes I loose my connection on computer start/reboot. Whenever I recycle the power on the router (turn it off, then back on) it fixes the problem, or if I go into LELA (Linksys EasyLink Advisor) and repair the connection it also fixes the problem. Its seems to be random loss of connection. It has to be a setting in the router because there is no way that 4 Ethernet ports are randomly going bad. The router I am loosing is the Linksys WRT610N. Please give some answers beings that this drives me crazy.

A:Lose Internet randomly when computer starts

I had the same problem, sometimes once the machine had booted there was no network connection and a reboot would fix it. Didn't happen every time. I went into device manager and got it to search online for a new network card driver and that seems to have done the trick.

Hi there guys!
So I'm new but I'll try and be as clear with my story as possible because I've already figured out the cause I just need to figure out the solution. I've had this desktop since fall of 2004 and it's never given me any serious problems. Fall of 2005 I took it with me when I started college and it started doing something VERY strange. It would just freeze up. And by freeze up I don't mean that it would freeze for a few seconds and go back to normal. I mean that it would freeze and the only way to unfreeze it would be to do a hard reboot.

Sometimes it would do it multiple times a day, other times it would go for a few days without doing it and then just do it. It tends to do it at the most inconvenient times too. I'm a gamer, and anybody who plays WoW probably knows that it tends to really grate on your nerves when you're in the middle of an instance and your computer freezes and you have to reboot.

At the time I couldn't figure out what was causing it, especially because when I took it home for the summer and had it up in my room (which didn't have an internet connection) it worked fine. I took it with me when I went down to Florida on an internship and after 3 solid months of not freezing, it started up again like it had never stopped. I'm working on a Vista computer for a friend whose grandson had literally almost overloaded it with crap. It was cluttered and running very slowly, with 3 different browsers, and at least 4 different anti-malware scanners in various states of expiration. Internet Explorer would access the internet very slowly, all the while generating frequent error messages pertaining to inability to access proxy servers. I uninstalled out all the extra games, crap-apps, search assistants, extra browsers, and uninstalled all the anti-malware programs, leaving IE8 as the default browser, un-checked the proxy settings and setup the LAN settings at auto-detect. The system began running very cleanly, and began downloading and installing MS updates. At the completion of the update list, including IE9 & SP2, the computer would no longer access the internet in any way, shape, form or fashion, using IE9, Firefox (reinstalled due to failure of IE9). (I backed up the computer thru several restore points, till I had it previous to all the changes I had made, still would not access the internet). The computer will however, continue to detect, download and install MS updates. I can (as administrator at CMD) successfully ping various websites by their ip address. ANY attempt by IE9 or Firefox to access the internet responds with an error message of "Cannot Connect".

Hi, I'm brand new here and I don't have tons of computer knowledge although I am learning....I hope! We bought a campground last year and were offering a wifi hot spot located near the camp office. It was actually done by accident because we live in the same building and have our own home network of 3 computers. We have a Linksys WRT54G router and a cable modem. So the campers were hopping on our wireless. I had some problems over the winter with someone using my credit card online. I was advised to maybe try getting another router and a hub/switch and basically to hook that hub/switch to the cable modem and then hook both routers to that and to have one of the routers be secured (WPA) and the other unsecured for the campers to use as a wifi hotspot. I also bought a Linksys range expander which I haven't set up yet. If this configuration with 2 routers on the same cable modem will work, I will set up the range expander to the unsecured router. I emailed linksys to ask them if this whole configuration was possible and the answer I received was basically not very straightforward but they made it sound like it couldn't be done. So now I'm asking you if it can be done the way I said or if there's another way I can offer an unsecured hot spot without compromising my own home network and security and without costing me a fortune. Hope someone can help. Thanks.

However, now I cannot connect to the Internet. When I plug the network cable in, it shows "Acquiring network address" and has been doing that for 10 minutes now. I have tried different cables and different network cards, so I know that's not the problem. Also, I am typing this up, so I know it's not my Internet provider.

I also attempted to reload the drivers for the original (on board) network card but it locks up when it tries to install.

A:Virus causing lost internet connection?

Also, when I plug the cable into the onboard card it shows it connected and it DOES acquire an address, it just won't let me get on line.

Original Post: Hello all, thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

I came home from work two days ago, to find that my computer was infected with a virus causing fake anti-virus warnings, opening internet explorer windows linking to buy fake antivirus software. I ran Malware bytes and AVG antivirus, and thought the problem was gone. Since then, however, my computer can't connect to the internet, as it's saying that my local area connection has is disconnected. I'm using my roommate's laptop plugged into our dsl modem, so the internet, and ethernet cable, are working. I've since run malwarebytes, ccleaner, spyware doctor, and uniblue registry booster, but nothing has fixed this problem. Now, whenever I try and run AVG antivirus, I get the blue screen of death with the following message: "Driver IRQL Not Less or Equal 0x000000D1 (0xE21F5000, 0x0000002, 0x0000000, 0xF3428E85).

When I run ipconfig /all, it says the media is disconnected for all 3 adapters that appear. As far as I know, nothing new has been installed or downloaded other than updates for AVG, Malwarebytes, and Divx, before the internet went away.

According to my system properties, I'm running Windows XP Pro Version 2002, Service Pack 3 on a Gateway GT5220 AMD Athlon 64 x2 Dual Core Processor 3800+, 2.01 Ghz, 1.00 GB of Ram.

Any advice or help is greatly appreciated. I'll run and post any scans needed, but please remember I cannot connect to the internet from my pc.

Hello, you guys have helped me in the past and I'm hoping you can again. I'm having a strange problem with my Internet connection just these past few weeks. When I first turn my PC on, I can't connect at all for about 15 minutes. Then I lose my connection every few seconds for the next 15 minutes. Once my PC has been on for about a half hour, my connection is absolutely fine until I shut down again. If I shut down and immediately restart, my connection is fine so it seems to have something to do with my PC being off for a while. There is no sign of any problem with my modem at all and my modem always shows that the connection is fine. And I never get disconnected after my PC has been on awhile. I'm assuming that this must be a malware problem of some sort. I checked my task manager right after I booted up to see if anything was running that shouldn't be, but I don't see anything unusual. I have run a DDS Log in the hopes that you can find the problem. Any help is greatly appreciated. This problem has been persisting for the past month. And I think I have narrowed it down to a software issue rather then a hardware issue. I can be connected to both LAN and WAN and both will give out.

Odd enough upon a fresh restart the problem is gone, for about 4+ hours and then no working. Another characteristic of the problem is that my connection whether wired or not seems to not recognize its been disconnected and does not show as local network only or completely disconnected, and web based applications such as MSN will stay "connected", except for the fact on other peoples computers I am disconnected and when I try send out going messages it comes up with a "this message hasnt been sent blah blah blah".

So yeah. Right now its more of an inconvenience then anything.

I have AVG, Windows Vista Ultimate, CC-cleaner, Avast. All currently up to date...

I will keep you updated as this happens, If you need any logs or anything let me know and I will gladly relay that information.

I was downloading a screen saver to my Dell Laptop and got a trojan alert. I removed it ( I think). I used zone alarm and windows firewall with a netgear wireless connection. Ran adware and spybot and removed all detected. Now I can not reach the internet. I have tried reloading netgear - tried a direct cable connection and tried dialup. Something is blocking the connection. I have turned off zone alarm and xp security. Still nothing. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi everyone!

I have had a big problem the last days. Scanned the computer and found some viruses and a lot of spyware, Have used 2 different antivirus prg?s and 3 or 4 different Spyware-killers. They have found and removed lot of the problems, but some thing still remain.

The biggest problem is that my Internet connection doesn't work all the time, especially in browsers. Messenger can have a hard time connecting, but once connected it stays online. The browsers, IE6 and Firefox, works for about a minute and then stop working for a minute or so. Then, if I keep reloading the page, it will suddenly appear and load. And after a while the connection will be lost again and all I get is a "Page not found".

I know I?ve had "System Doctor" spyware, but that toolbar has seemed to disappear.

Can you please take a look at my Hijackthis-log and see what there is to do?

Thank you!

/ John
