New Gateway notebook won't stay connected to wi fi. Signs xbox live out when I try.

Q: New Gateway notebook won't stay connected to wi fi. Signs xbox live out when I try.

I just got a new Gateway Ne series notebook for Christmas. Everytime I try to connect it wirelessly it will sign out my son and boyfriend from xbox live. It will connect if I connect before they have used their xbox's. But usually once they sign in it will say limited conectivity. I have comcast internet an Arris modem and Linskys router. I called the cable company and they said I have enough speed and wanted to charge me to check the router settings. The only thing I have made changes to is about a year ago I changed the channel in the router because when we moved in our new place the Wii wouldn't connect only the xbox 360's. So I changed a channel in the router settings to get it to work. Not sure if that could be the problem. I would appreciate any help. I want to make sure this isn't something simple to fix before I take the notebook back for a refund. I called Gateway support and they had me reset the computer and reinstall a driver which did not help.

I recently connected my Xbox 360 to my home network through a wired router, and since then my Vista l laptop will not stay asleep. When I close the lid, hit the power button, or select "sleep" from the shut down menu, the screen goes black for about three seconds, then comes back on. Also since I got my Xbox, Windows Media Center comes up every time I boot up and asks me if I want to set up the Xbox so that I can view media from my computer on it. Whenever I try to do that, the set up stops halfway through with an error message. I don't know if this is related or not.

I have gone into the device manager and unchecked "allow this device to wake the computer" on my onboard keyboard and touchpad, as well as my external keyboard and mouse. This did not solve the problem. What else can I try?

I moved recently and changed my ISP. I had Time Warner before and never had any issues with xbox live. But now I cannot join any online games, even though it says I am connected to xbox live. It says there are no sessions available. And when I try to use the Live Marketplace I get this message:

"cant retrieve information from xbox live.
please try again later.

status code: 807B01F4"

I have:

Hughes HN9000 modem

Netgear WNR2000V2 router

I'm using a wired connection to my xbox 360, and I've never had issues with the router. None of the computers in the house have trouble with internet connectivity. I tried connecting the xbox directly to the modem and it still has the same problem.

A:connected but unable to use xbox live

if it all worked before with the same hardware - i would have a discussion with your new ISP and see if they have blocked any ports for gaming

Um confused by "open NAT". You have the router specifically for the added security of the network address translation and you want to turn it off? Can you tell us exactly what you want to do?

Modified Xbox Consoles Banned From Xbox Live
(November 11 & 12, 2009)

In an attempt to combat piracy, Microsoft is permanently banning modified Xbox consoles from accessing Xbox Live. The ban also applies to gamers who have played games downloaded in violation of copyright laws. The ban will affect between 600,000 and one million players.

Users can recover their online profiles if they purchase another console. The plan raises concerns because it is the console rather than the player that is banned, so the people who purchase the devices second hand could find themselves unable to access Xbox live.

I saw this earlier today and frankly I think this is an excellent call on the part of MS.

hello, i hope someone can help me as i have spent countless hours browsing the web and different forums for an answer, so i am finally posting somewhere hoping someone can help me directly.

i have a laptop connected to my neighbors xfinity wifi hotspot, using my uncles login information. i have a steady 4 bar connection and am able to access the internet, the connection is not the problem. i have an ethernet cable connecting my xbox and laptop and i am using Internet Connection Sharing to get access to xbox live, this works however i am losing connection ALOT and it is very frustrating trying to play multiplayer with my friends. i am guessing that ICS is not as reliable as Bridging the two connections.

i can successfully create the bridge and can still access the internet on the laptop, but cannot connect to xbox live. while running the test to connect i can get it to connect to the network by entering the information manualy, but then it fails to connect to the internet due to 'the dns servers cannot resolve xbox live server names'

please help and i will be happy to provide more information if needed.

I could not see a solution to this on any other post, so am hoping someone can help me out.

Basically, I got signed out of Live Messenger a couple of days ago, and since then when I try to sign back in, it just constantly attempts to 'sign in' never actually doing so or resulting in error. I connect to the same wireless network as other users in my house, and they have no problems signing in. I have checked my Firewall and Proxy settings and all are set as they should, and from what I can see nothing has changed since I was able to sign in. I have tried every possible solution I have come across and ran a spyware scan, but still the problem persists. I have tried this also on another network, but am still not able to sign in. However, I can sign in using the same details on Windows Messenger!

I have also uninstalled and reinstalled Live Messenger but still no joy!!

Any ideas, help would be much appreciated!

i tried to connect my xbox 360 to my laptop (windows XP) and next to the network a yellow triangle with a exclamation point popped up. Anyone know whats wrong?

A:My Xbox 360 will not conect to my laptop for xbox live

It would be better to connect the XBOX directly to the router (if possible)

Make sure that the laptop is connected to the wireless.

Go to Control Panel and open Network Connections.

Right-click on the wireless connection and choose properties.

Click the Advanced tab check the box to Allow other network users to connect

through this computer's internet connection

In the dropdown menu select Local Area Connection

Hello all! New member here with a new problem.

I bought a Xbox specifically just so I can play with my brother on different games via Xbox live. The first month was great, it worked well and we never got disconnected or lag. After that month... randomly Xbox live would disconnect out of the blue. After a week, it started were it disconnects every 15 minutes.

So after trying to fix it for 4 months, I still have had no luck. My router is a Linksys BEFW11S4 V4. I see no option to turn on UPNP. If anyone could please help me with this......... that would be awesome.

Thanks all!

EDIT: I forgot to say this also happens with Windows Live. Singing into that while my brother is on the Xbox still disconnects us.

My network set up:
Modem connected to Belkin wireless G MIMO router set up downstairs.
Belkin range extender upstairs which relays the downstairs router's connection.
Xbox wirelessly connected to the range extender.

Ive searched endlessly for a solution to my problem but none of them ever last, so if anyone could help me I would be really grateful. I've already put my Xbox in the DMZ using a static IP and opened the necessary firewall ports which has temporarily worked in the past but it always goes back to strict NAT. Sometimes if I reset my router I will get moderate NAT until the next day when I will have reset my router again (this does'nt always work). I've also tried a wired connection by connecting my Xbox to the range extender with an ethernet cabble which gave me open NAT for about 10mins before it went back to strict.

I use a address to log into Windows 8. That way I get easy access to Skydrive and Contacts. I have connected my Facebook account and have access to that as well.

I use Another address to log into my Xbox account and onto my Xbox.

Somehow it would seem I can not use my Xbox Live ID to activate the Xbox Live and Xbox Companion Apps in Metro while logged in with my @Hotmail account.

I would like the possibility to access Xbox features in the same way I access my Facebook features.

Any know way to fix this yet? Any known fixes coming up?

A:Xbox Companion/Live games with different Live-ID?

I don't think that can work in Windows 8 at the moment...

The only way would be to use the account as your main Microsoft account to access Xbox Live, or log out of the Hotmail Microsoft account, manually add them in for the apps you need with it, and use the live for the rest.

Hi, A newby here. I am trying to perform a very lengthy download and my computer keeps disconnecting after a few minutes. What have I done so far? On the control panel I went to network connections>Rt click on Dial up>chose properties>chose options>redialing options> set Idle time before hanging up to Never. My computer keeps changing it back to ten minutes. I'm running Windows XP Home. Any ideas? Bill

A:Stay Connected

If Idle time before hanging up is set to a high time-out number, there is no guarantee that the connection will not disconnect before the time passes. This is because the server may choose to disconnect you before the time set here.

I think you are attempting the exact opposite of what you want.

I also suspect your problem is somewhere else , most likely you have Outlook express to check for mail every x minutes and to hang up when connection is no longer needed.
So it disconnects and IE can't reconnect because you set a high reconnect time.

Note that your ISP also figures into this. They too have a idle time so if they decide your connection has been idle to long, they may disconnect you , their software may have set a cap on what you can set at your end.

Some ISPs there are connection keep alive programs which you can run which will send traffic to the ISP server every few seconds so it keeps your connection open.

Hi guys. Got this problem. Let me explain. About a week ago I was on the net using IE7 when it just stopped communicating. All I kept getting page not available. So I tried restarting DNS client service. It worked. Then next day it went again, so tried DNS again to no avail. (I may not be a computer wiz but I'm not completely computer illiterate).

Now; I have XP Pro and BT HomeHub plus Kaspersky Internet Security 7, so my next port of call was to try BT Desktop Help. But alas it told me it needed Macromedia 8, which I know I have.

So now, the only way to get back on the net is to reboot the computer using last known good configuration.

PLEASE! can anybody help. Maybe it's just a good general maintenance cleanup that's required.

It would help us a great deal if you told us what type of connection you use since it happens on both browsers. Do you use dialup, DSL, Cable, Satellite etc? Knowing your connection type will help greatly. Also have you checked with your ISP to discuss this with them to see if there are known issues they are aware of?

It will show me for a split second that I'm connected but then will change to limited access or no Internet access. Two things I would check:
Make sure that you do not have the netgear wireless adapter manager and the windows default wireless zero config or Wlan running at the same time.
Two wireless managers running will cause flakey wireless issues.
Also, just to test disable ALL firewalls,Windows default and any antivirus suite that you have running.

I held down the power button to do a hard reset and it turned off completely. when it didn't restart, i pressed the power button. the power light came on and the hard drive light came on, but the screen, hard drive, and fan remained off. I tried unplugging the battery and plugging it back in. it booted normally. about 10 minutes later it went alseep again. the battery trick didn't work the second time. I removed the batter and tried to start it with just ac. when i pressed the power button, it would light up momentarily and then turn back off. I waited an hour and tried again and it worked. for about 20 minutes. this time i just tried rebooting about 5 times and the 5th time it worked. so here i am... waiting for it to turn off again. what now?

A:notebook wont stay on!

I removed the ram, hard drive, battery, and all other peripherals and it still won't turn on.

if i try to turn it on with either just the battery or just the ac power, the powerlight comes on and turns off right away.

if i have both the battery and the ac plugged in, the power and hard drive light turn on and stay on and nothing else happens.

i can hold down the power button for about 5 secs to turn it off.

I bought a new Dell Desktop (Studio 540 with Vista Home Premium) and I can not maintain a connection to my network. I have spent literally hours on the phone with various technicians and they almost always manage to get it working, but the connection is gone again after a couple of hours. My old computer (Dell Dimension 4550 with WinXP) has no trouble connecting and staying connected.

I have a Linksys WRT160N router; a Linksys WUSB600N vers.2 adapter.
If cabled directly to the DSL modem (Siemens Speedstream 4200) there's no problem; but it cant keep connected to the network. The connection shows as being connected with a strong signal but I cant browse or access my e-mail.
While dealing with both Dell and Bell(server) their best suggestion is always that I might do better if I bought one of their routers!!
My inclination is that this must be a Vista problem?

I just had another look at the Vista computer, rebooted and I'm connected....for the moment so I got the CMD info:

If it works fine directly connected to the modem, then usually thats a router issue, check to see that you have the latest drivers, or there is the chance that the router is bad, it happens sometimes.

I keep getting disconnected from the internet every few minutes and my firewall just disappears!

I didn't start having trouble until earlier today. I got a message window in Yahoo Messenger from someone claiming they were on a mailing list I belong to---message was odd, and after reading the other day about hackers now using IM clients to drop viruses/worms, I didn't take any chances and clicked "x" on the message window to close it.

Now for some reason I keep getting disconnected from the internet and my firewall will just disappear. I ran a full Avast! virus scan, which came up no viruses found, deleted all my cookies, cleared cache/Temp. Internet Files, etc., and still am having the same problem.

I searched in GoBack for certain files to see if anything had happened, etc., and noticed a few things with the yahoo messenger (I.e., "CONTROL_RUNDLL INET.CPL CPL, ystatsB).

Here's my HJT log:

I've tried some of the solutions suggested on this site but have no found a solution. My laptop will not stay connected to my house wireless router. Other laptops and phones have no problem staying connected and my laptop stays connected when connected by a cable. It is so frustrating and I am desperate for a solution.

Sometimes it will stay connected for a little while but it eventually disconnects. Also it used to always disconnect anytime I would try to watch a youtube video. Sometimes if I disconnect and reconnect it will be good for a few minutes. It usually says "Identifying" or whatever when it disconnects. (Sorry for the running sentences and bad grammar within but I'm not good with technology vocabulary and I'm just trying to give you guys as much information as possible so I can get a solution to this)! Please help!!!

A:Laptop won't stay connected!

In order to know what wireless adapter is in the laptop, you need to mention the brand and model of the laptop. Some wifi chips are flakier than others.
Also what brand and model of router. Again some routers don't work as well with all computers as others do.

The pc I use for work got the System Progressive Protection virus today. I finally got rid of it and everything seems to be working fine, but now it won't stay connected to the internet. I have 3 other pc connected with cat 5 just like the work pc and they work fine all well as all the wireless ones. I can't find anything wrong, I have run bitdefender and everthing is good. If I unplug the cat 5 cable and plug it back in the internet works for about 2 mins then goes down again, if I restart it's the same thing. Any ideas?

This new USB3.0 ext HDD seems to be in an almost constant state of Windows thinking it is unplugged, then just plugged back in, back and forth. I had to shut autoplay on it off because it would happen at least once a minute, sometimes 30 seconds, sometimes a couple minutes. The drive and case are brand new, but this is just like what was happening with my old drive via eSATA. I thought something was just wrong with the drive or my eSATA port, but now this. I know the USB3.0 port is fine because I have plugged in flash drives (even a 3.0 one) and connected other drives via 2.0 in it, with no problem. As for the eSATA ext HDD at least, this was happening a couple months ago before I wiped my system, and is still happening now. New OS install changed nothing.

These drives show up as known and installed in Device Manager. Disk Management's info is correct. Acronis is the same. Sometimes they just need a coaxing from "Scan for Hardware Changes" to even try to let me do anything. Windows Explorer, though, shows it all on its own, when it does think it's plugged in. (& yes, the plug fits quite snugly into the port, all is fine there.) Also, on my fiance's rig, both drives are also behaving exactly as the should. It's something over here...

Any ideas what could be causing my system to have trouble keeping these external drives onboard?

A:New HDD on USB3.0 won't stay connected, either.

try this.
To Disable Selective Suspend:

open the control panel
go to power options (you may have to set view to small icons)
click change plan settings
in the window that opens:
click change plan settings
click change advanced power settings, expand usb and ensure usb selective suspend is disabled.

It doesn't solve many problems, but it does solve some connectivity issues with usb devices.

Hey guys, it's my first post here and I'm in quite a quandary. I built this computer up brand new (my specs are listed in my profile) and it worked flawlessly for about a month. I was playing Flight Simulator online, was disconnected, and when I quit the game to investigate I found that I had an exclamation point over the icon in the tray. I had windows repair it and played for several more hours without issue. A month or so later I'm still fighting this issue.

The internet sometimes will work for 11-12 hours and never give me an issue, and other days I literally cannot stay connected for more than 10 seconds or so. I will be surfing the internet, it doesn't matter what I'm doing and a page won't load and sure enough i'll look down at the tray and there will be the infamous yellow ! looking me dead in the eye. I repair it with windows and it fixes it temporarily.

I went out thinking it was a motherboard issue, (I have the ASUS M4A79XTD EVO) and purchased a Netgear PCI LAN card which made absolutely no difference and still plagues me with disconnects. I really just don't know what to do, I've reformatted my computer, I've tried Netgear drivers, I've tried windows drivers, I've tried Realtek drivers, manually installing them, automatically installing them, reseating all of my hardware and connectors, dicking with settings in the card options such as offloads and matrix speeds etc, uninstalled ipv6 as well as other things in that list that i supposedly don't need, I also dou... A:Just Can't Stay Connected to The Internet

It looks like you have messed with drivers and lan cards to no effect so now you might want to consider that the router your using isn't quite up to Windows 7 standards. I'm not sure what brand of router you are using but often times these sorts of problems can be fixed by just updating the firmware on the router.

Have you tried doing that yet Bowlerguy?

Hi there everyone.

I have an Asus A53T series laptop running windows 7. Had for a year now and the entire time have been connected without problem to my Optus wifi modem. For the last week however the laptop keeps disconnecting from wifi and when I troubleshoot and reconnect, it lasts no longer than 10 minutes at a time.

I've restarted my modem a few times but that didn't do anything. I also restored all deleted software on my computer and that didn't help either.

Help please! I'm now out of ideas

Current setup

Motorola Surfboard SB5101 cable modem
D-Link DIR-655 Xtreme N router
Buffalo Nfiniti G300N USB WiFi adapter
QNAP TS-209 Pro NAS plugged into the router

I keep losing the wireless internet connection. Sometimes it works for a few hours, sometimes only a few minutes.

Sometimes I can reach (type the IP address in Firefox) the cable modem and log in, but cannot “see” past it to reach the internet.

Sometimes I can reach (type the IP address in Firefox) the router and the NAS plugged into it, but can not get to the cable modem or internet.

Sometimes I can not even see the router, however if I hover the mouse over the system tray wireless connection icon, it shows as connected and lists the correct SSID.

I can often right click the wireless connection icon, select “repair”, and Windows will re-connect, but the connect problem keeps occurring.

Also tried:
Buffalo Nfiniti AG300NH router
D-Link G132 USB WiFi adapter (g not N)

I had the same problems.

It recently started losing internet connection , few seconds on, then off for 30 seconds or more. Rebooting router did not help.
I restored laptop to a prior date and it seems ok now. Any thoughts if this happens again? Thanks

A:Can't stay connected to wifi

theres quite a lot of things that may have caused the issue , and so its difficult to give a guide here.

it may have been a windows update that caused an issue and the restore has resolved and it will work fine from now on.

if it happens again , then the first think to do , would be to start a new post and detail as much information as possible

make and model of the PC
windows version
are other pcs able to connect to the wireless
and then an ipconfig /all
ipconfig /all

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply
Note: you will see entries named Tunnel adapter Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface: we dont need to see that information - JUST the infomation above those entries

I just noticed this problem today and the event viewer doesn't show it happening yesterday. I'm not sure what could be causing this, so I'm posting here in the hopes that I could be directed to the proper forum.

I'm running Win7 64-bit on my laptop and Just today I've started having trouble staying connected to the internet. About once every minute, I get kicked off for about 2 seconds. It's annoying, but it's only really causing problems with in messenger services.

I checked the Event Viewer, and here the message I see repeated when it happens:

TCP/IP NetBIOS helper service was successfully sent a stop control message.

The ID number is 7042. But then, 2 seconds later, it's back up. Occasionally I'll get other warnings about "Application Experience has stopped running" or things of that nature, but they are few and far between. I'm hoping you guys can help me.

I hope someone on here can help me out with this one. This is what I have.....My host computer is a desktop running XP; it is hooked to a Westell Model 2200 Modem and a Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless-B Router (No problems with desktop connecting to Internet).

I am trying to add my laptop, which is also running XP, and cannot seem to get it to work. It connects and shows the signal as excellent but then dis-connects a few seconds later. I have had this setup for some time now and it has always worked fine until a few days ago when I used the restore function on the laptop to get it back to its original state. I'm not sure if I messed something up when I did that but something is wrong some where. After the restore, I ran the windows update and updated the network drivers.

Under Network adapters in device manager on the laptop it says I have....

1394 Net Adapter #2
LAN-Express AS IEEE 802.11g miniPCI Adapter #2
Realtek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC #2

I tried running the Network Setup Wizard but when I come to "connections", I get the following...

"The network connections listed below are disconnected. Plug in your network cables or otherwise connect your network hardware...

Any suggestion?

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2, on a Dell with 1 GB ram and a cable modem using Comcast modem service. I'm almost positive Comcast is the source of my problem, but I'll ask here anyway. There's no point in trying to get help from Comcast!

Quite often, once I've logged onto a webpage, such as a help forum or other message board sort of page, I'll type a message I want to post, or click on an icon trying to navigate around the page I'm on, and my whole system absolutely stops functioning completely. I watch that ****ing hourglass till I finally give up and hit the X in the upper right corner and just start the whole session all over again.

I've got Zone Alarm on my taskbar, and I can tell that absolutely no traffic is moving into or out of my modem when this happens. I've got a Linksys router, and I can tell from the NON-flashing green lights on that, too, that absolutely no traffic is moving into or out of my modem when this happens!

At first I suspected it was because Comcast rations bandwidth and I have not paid them extra for their "business" service, so they're making me wait in line. I know they do this, but I can't prove they're doing it to me; I only suspect them of it!

But often, when one site or another does this to me, I'll open a new window and navigate to a different site and log on and have no acc... Read more

I'm having a serious problem keeping my broadband connected. I've had it for about a year and it's been totally fine, but recently it just suddenly disconnects for no reason and then won't reconnect without me restarting my whole PC.

Usually, this seems to happen when I'm opening up another program like Outlook or Photoshop or something.

What the hell could be causing this? Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm not part of a network or anything, and as I say it has been working fine.

Any info you require I'd be happy to provide.

Then it just disconnects and I can't reconnect without restarting my whole PC. Very annoying, since it means I can only do one thing at a time.

I'm not sure if this would be a hardware or a software problem, does anyone have any ideas?

I'm running XP Home with SP2 if that helps. I'm afraid I don't know what other information would be relevant, but I'll be happy to provide it.

I previously had similar issues with the beta builds of 7 with no real 100% resolution. And now I am having similar issues. I have Windows 7 Professional x64 on both my Desktop and Laptop but they seem to fight a little when it comes to the Homegroup.

It worked PERFECTLY this morning, I was sharing files, streaming, everything... but later they just stopped seeing each other. I was able to get them working again, but I added 2 more files to the desktops homegroup sharing (homegroup: read/write) and when it was done sharing, no connection. Now no matter which PC I create the homegroup on, the other won't see it, and running diagnostics doesn't find anything wrong.

A:Homegroup won't stay connected.

HomeGroup seems like a good idea at first, but has been a real hassel to use. On rethinking the issue I dropped HomeGroup altogether because it doesn't do anything that networking your PCs the old fashioned way wouldn't do. But n/e how, I found HomeGroup to start having problems when Windows Firewall service stops or is disabled and/or any of the Peergroup services are stopped.

Using a linksys router, running XP on my laptop...

Before going to school my laptop connected fine to my router at home. Go to school, laptop connects fine to router in apartment (also a linksys). Come home and laptop will not stay connected to my router.

If I go under available wireless networks and try to connect, it tries to connect to router, says not connected, yet the internet will work for a couple minutes. Right now says signal strenght excellent, "not connected", in my tray the wireless connection is x'd out, but I'm browsing. This will work for 3-5 minutes, and then I won't be able to browse. I try to reconnect, and the same thing happens.

Just now, I ran the network setup wizard, tried to connect to home network blah blah, finished the wizard. It said I was connected, I could browse, I thought I had fixed it. But 5 minutes later, it says I'm not connected but could still browse, and then a couple minutes later it says I'm not connected and I'm unable to browse.

Have another laptop, exact same model and it connects flawlessly. Doesn't make any sense. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A week ago my internet light on my modem quit working and thus I couldn't get on the internet. AT&T determined my modem went caput so I bought a new one. I now have a motorola modem 2210-02. Ever since I got it the longest my internet has stayed on is 24 hours and then the light is back off and I'm out of commission again. I have bypassed my usual netgear wireless router wgr614v6 and hooked the modem directly to my desktop. I never know what causes it to go out nor what causes it to come back on. I just got it to come back on, but all I did was restart my pc about 3 or 4 times and all the sudden it's back on. I have been checking my ipconfig whenever it is off or on and here is what I've found when the ip address is and the subnet mask and the default gateway the internet works fine....when it the ip address is and the subnet mask and the default gateway is it DOES NOT work. The power, ethernet, and dsl lights on my modem always work, but the internet light (and thus internet access) is the light that flashes forever, turns red, and goes off.

I am not very knowledgeable in this area, but I can't afford to pay someone to help me. Please please please help me fix this. AT&T won't help me anymore as they say it is a problem with my pc. TIA!

I would suggest recycling the power on the modem, and your router too if you have one. Unplug it, count a slow ten then plug it back in. If it doesn't happen again, you know it was the modem/router. If it does, then you may need to figure out what device is faulty and if it's the router, replace it. If it's the modem, call your ISP and ask about having it replaced.

I've had this problem before. It mysteriously went away several months ago, but came back yesterday. When I try to listen to radio (streaming signal), it connects, buffers, plays for about 5 seconds, then cuts off, says it's buffering, then "Attempting to reconnect", the buffering again, but the moving buffer icon is frozen.

I have a cable connection that runs typically at 3mbs. I have unplugged the modem for 45 sec. and plugged it back in to ensure the software in it is the latest. WMP is configured to autodetect the connection speed, as is IE. All of the streaming protocol checkboxes for WMP's Network options are checked. I have run virus and spyware scans using Trend Micro and MS Antispyware, both of which had the latest footprint files, and they find nada.

I must be missing some simple setting. What is it?

Hi all.
Until yesterday my internet was working fine. I have a laptop upstairs and a computer downstairs. The computer is directly connected to my Comcast internet and has a Linksys WRT54G router connected to it.

Now, my internet on the laptop has stopped working. It will briefly connect to my router and the internet will work but then it will just disconnect. It says (connected or not) that the signal strength is excellent. However, when it disconnects randomly, and then searches for available networks, it doesn't always find my router. And when it does, it won't connect or it'll take like 5 minutes, connect, work briefly, and then disconnect. And this whole time the internet on my main computer works perfectly well.

Can anyone help me figure out a solution to this? Thanks and if you need any additional info let me know.

My computer constantly fluctuates between being connected to the wireless network/internet and "connected with limited access" in which I cannot access the internet. I am then forced to disconnect and reconnect. I then have 1-20 minutes before it drops back to limited connectivity.

I have Vista and have tried the DchpConnDisable fix that microsoft put out ( This did not work. I have since deleted that fix, and the registry is back to where it originally was.

Make sure you have the latest Intel wireless driver from the laptop manufacturer's web site. If you already have the latest driver use Device Manager to uninstall it; reboot and let Windows discover the adapter and reinstall the driver.

What security applications do you have on the machine?

(From a JohnWill post)

TCP/IP stack repair options for use with Vista or 7.

Start - All Programs - Accessories and right click on Command Prompt, select "Run as Administrator" to open a command prompt.

The laptop can find the wireless network connection and it says it is connected but it cannot stay connected to the internet for more than a minute or two.

Hi. I am having a problem staying connected to the INTERNET. I can get connected but the connection lasts between 2 and 15 minutes usually before disconnecting. I am using Windows XP and Smartlink (modem). 9 calls to my ISP has not solved the problem. I hope someone can help, Thanks.

This is driving me crazy. Suddenly, my very reliable IBM T-42 laptop just will not stay connected at certain wireless AP's - most notably at airports, hotels.

It works rock solid at home with 2 different routers, with WEP enabled, very fast and not nary a problem.

On the road and sometime in my corporate enviroment - I'll connect just fine, at excellent signal strenght and at 54 Mbps. I'll get a couple of web pages deep, then the problems start.

If I watch, the speed will drop to 48, then 36, 24, 11, 5.5, 2, 1 then not connected all in the space of 2 minutes. Only to reconnect and start the process all over again.

I doubt its interference as others around me don't seem to be affected.

I'm up to date on drivers and fixes. Any suggestions really appreciated. Thanks.

A:Cannot stay connected at certain access points

Welcome, joshua362.

Sure sounds like a driver problem, but you said that you have the most up to date one. I assume that it's from the laptop manufacturer's web site.

Make sure that the adapter's utility and XP's WZC are not both running. And then, whichever you are using, try the other one.

Ok, heres the situation..

My computer - HP Pavilion P7-1010. Windows 7 64bit home edition..

My Laptop - HP mini 1000 with XP

I play this game, Trickster Online.. and they have a "stay connected for 100+hrs" event..

On my laptop with XP, it will stay connected until I Disconnect it.

On my PC, it will stay connected for like 5-20mins, then log everything out. EVEN if i am still using the internet.. (its not Idle!)

I've tried the following:

-Turned off "Disable this to save power"
-Turned all my Windows power settings to "never hibernate, no screensaver, etc" even no shutting off of the monitor.
-Tried Wireless and wired, (Both same results)
-Reformating the computer to get rid of any rogue programs messing the net up
-Updateing drivers and Windows
Is there maybe some weird option in the settings for Windows 7 broadband card?
or maybe some weird setting in windows 7 to cut my net after so long?

Ive searched everywhere and cant find anything

THANKS SO MUCH Also - Heres some info

A:Net on W7 wont stay connected, but Fine on XP

Welcome to SF,

I'd start disabling Start up Apps and Services that are not being used. You may do this from Start and type msconfig.

Are you using a 3rd party wireless software?

I have a computer here at the workplace that won't stay connected to the internet. All of the other computers, connected to the same router, do not have a problem. It's using Windows XP SP3, and has all of its critical updates. The problems have been occuring with IE7, so I downloaded Firefox (from a network computer) and installed that. It doesn't crash, but there's still a problem.

I went through the first steps you have posted. Panda ActiveScan will not complete. It can't even complete its update. I downloaded Spyware Blaster and IE-Spyad (from a network computer) and installed both. Spyware Blaster had to use its safe mode to update completely.

Thanks for any and all help with this situation. I have searched this site and the internet and I haven't been able to find the problem or a solution for that matter. (or they were way to above my tech skills). I do understand computers, but definitely more programming than hardware.

First I will tell you how I have everything set up. I have a Roku box that is wirelessly connected to a Qwest Actiontec wireless gateway (GT701-WG) which receives DSL internet through the phone (not sure if that's redundant, but its a green phone cord that was provided) and supplies IP address dynamically, three wireless laptops connect to the internet (1: MAC OS X 10.4.11, 2: MAC OS X 10.4.11, 3: HP Pavilion dv4 running Vista), an external network storage system (Seagate GoFlex Home 1TB) which is connected to the modem via ethernet, and a HP Officejet Pro 8500 printer connected to the GoFlex Home via USB to make it wireless for all computers.

The problem started when we connected the storage system. Whenever a computer is actively searching the internet, and someone wants to watch the Roku, the Roku gives the error " Can't connect to the internet". We then must reset the modem to get it all to work again. Starting the Roku before you go on the internet will allow it to go for a little while but eventually the Roku will get kicked off again, giving the same "Can't connect to the internet" error. Sometimes when we reset the Roku, the computers will get I... Read more

A:Roku can't stay connected; IP conflicts as well

try setting a fixed IP address (manually set the IP, Gateway, DNS ) for the Roku -
lets see an ipconfig /all from one of the working PC and we can suggest the settings to use

If you log into the GT701-WG and see what range of IP is set for DHCP and then setoutside that range

for example id the default gateway is and the dhcp range - starts at and allocates 50 addresses
Than that range is 100 - 149

so you can set the roku to 200 for example

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad Helix (not sure of the exact model number but it's an i7 with 8GB ram and 128 GB SSD). After I upgraded to 8.1, I was able to pair the laptop to my bluetooth speakers and my phone (Motorola Razr Maxx) but almost instantaneously after connecting both my speakers and phone would drop and say not connected.

Nothing I did would resolve the problem, and I have gone through more or less every thread on this board relating to bluetooth issues. I've tried reinstalling the drivers, I've set the bluetooth support services to start automatically but the only thing to get bluetooth working again was to roll back to Windows 8.

So my question is this:

I kind of miss some of the features of 8.1 and I'd like to get those back, but not at the cost of bluetooth functionality. Is there any way to get the bluetooth working in 8.1, or any way to get the features of 8.1 in 8?

Some extra information; I'm running Windows 8 64 bit Pro as of right now and bluetooth is working fine; I have a broadcom bluetooth radio that came preinstalled in my laptop, specific model number is BCM20702A0;While I was using 8.1 there were no issues in Device Manager regarding drivers, at least not with the exclamation marks nor any unidentified devices.

A:Bluetooth devices would not stay connected in 8.1

Okay, the problem seems to have automagically fixed itself. All I did was revert back to windows 8, like I said in the previous post, and after updating to 8.1 again the problem does not exist anymore. I have no explanation for what's different or why it worked but I'm not going to question it.

HELP....I have a Lenovo G550 that is running Windows7 and has been for several months! Anyway, it will connect to the internet via wireless, but it only stays connected for a few minutes. I have other computers in the house and they remain connected, so that leads me to believe it's not the router.

Thus far I've done a few odds and ends suggested on other sites to eliminate my problem, like taking the battery out for 30 minutes, changing the power setting....I ran spybot to see if there was some bug lurking around and none of that helped.

A:HELP...Lenovo G550 won't stay connected

How does it work with an ethernet connection?

Do you have the latest wireless driver from the external adapter manufacturer's web site or Lenova's site if an integrated adapter?

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector.

A:Wirless Internet Won't Stay Connected

Hello thestraw and welcome to theBC HijackThis forum. I do not see anysigns of viruses or malware in the log. It is clean.

I think the problem is probably related to the wireless hardware.I've seen other issues with Toshiba's connecting to various routers. I recommend posting a question in the Networking forum. They can assist with non-malware related networking issues.

Bought a new computer; Compaq, with Windows XP and everything is going fine, except that I can't stay connected to the Internet. We have a dial up connection, and I can be surfing and using MSN when suddenly, web pages won't load and MSN is disonnected! The computer icons still blink, and when I right click on them, it shows I am connected, with the seconds still counting away!

I have to disconnect, wait a few seconds, then click on something that will connect again. I was blaming MSN for awhile, and it does seem to be much worse when I am using that, but it will happen when that isn't even on. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling MSN, but that didn't help. You probably will need more information than I have given, but I am not sure what, so ask away. Thanks.

I have an HP Pavilion dv6636nr notebook that I got a year ago. Recently, it has started randomly not staying connected to the wireless internet. My desktop is connecting and staying connected just fine, and they both have the same programs on them as far as Zone Alarm and such. The only difference is that the laptop has Windows Vista and the desktop has XP, but I have no idea if that would make a difference here.

I can reboot or start up the laptop and it's connected just fine. I can browse pages for a couple of hours. If I leave it alone for several hours, that's where the problem starts. I go to open a website, and I get the whole "page cannot be displayed" thing. I tried uploading a photo while it was doing this via FTP to my webspace, and it uploaded, but when I view it, it's totally garbled, due to a messed connection, I assume? If I upload from my desktop, it's fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't really "get" the whole wireless internet settings thing (my boyfriend does all that, but he hasn't been able to find a reason why this is happening).

Should I post a Hijack This log?

A:Laptop Won't Stay Connected to the Internet

Some things you can try here.
For wireless connections, change the channel on the router, I like channels 1, 6, and 11 in the US.
For wireless connections, try moving either the wireless router/AP or the wireless computer. Even a couple of feet will sometimes make a big difference.
Update the firmware to the latest version available on the manufacturer's site.
Reset the router to factory defaults and reconfigure.
Update the network drivers (wired and wireless) on your computer to the latest available.

Many times these measures will resolve a lot of intermittent issues.

I have just inst6alled Win XP Pro SP3 as a dual boot on my win7 Machine.
I had a few problems getting it to recognise my wireless adapter but I have managed to rectify thast problem.
The problem I have now got is that when it notices my router it starts to connect to it ok but then stays on Acquiring Network Address for about 10-15 seconds and then just restarts all over again. I know there isnt a problem with the adapter as I am using it now on my Win7 OS,,,I have given it the correct details for me WEP passcode and setup everything else properly, I have laso tried using the adapters own wireless setup utility but i had even more problems with that.

I hope someone can help me as I really need to use
XP for certain things that I use online which are not very good on Win7.

I hope to hear from someone soon

Many Thanks

I have windows xp Service Pack 2. I am on dial up, nothing else is available where I am. I'm trying to download AVG free 2008, but it's a 3 1/2 hour download and my dial up doesn't stay connected long enough. Is there any way I can save what I have and continue after it disconnects? I have my internet set so "idle time before hanging up is 24 hours. Are there other settings I should check? How? and Where? This is so frustrating...The disconnect time seems random, I don't see a pattern (ie every 15 minutes or something). I'd like to set it and leave it overnight, but it always disconnects. Would appreciate any help. Everything else seems to be working well, computer is not slow, nothing else is running. Thanks.
