Please advise on best router to add and configuration for house of heavy data users

Q: Please advise on best router to add and configuration for house of heavy data users

Hi Guys (and Gals?)

SUMMARY:
I want to add a second wireless router to my existing home network. Also I plan to upgrade to a "smart" (internet-connected) TV within the next year so I'm trying to plan ahead. I have a decent-sized house with many THICK walls (no drywall here!). Tech-oriented family of 4.

Other details:

1. Existing router is Linksys E3000 and has served well.

2. Four endusers in house: all technophiles and heavy data users, often simultaneously.
-- Son connects his self-built gaming monster machine via Ethernet. Hard core gamer thus streaming is critical. Also art student but I'd say his build has accommodated those needs well.
-- Hubby laptop PC and tablet and phone; streaming to tablet is critical, esp. from upper floor bedroom.
-- Daughter phone and laptop; streams to both, often from upper floor bedroom.
-- Yours truly mom, (and network admin)... heavy reliance on self-built desktop (Win 8.1), Asus laptop (Win 7), tablet, smartphone (often all simultaneously), streaming, bluetooth(s) (plural?) , whatever else I come up with.

3. 3 TV's that use the cable modem, but I plan (hope!) to swap one of these in next year to a smart TV (love the Roku I use now, which of course connects to my wonderful e3000 router) The TV to swap is on main floor, front of house.

4. Wiring: I live in an old house; translate: brick exterior (awesome), very thick plaster walls interior (they don't make em like this anymore, sooo cool), small-ish rooms so lots of walls (gives character), 3 levels: basement (dead places, want to fix), main level (existing router sits there next to son's gaming PC), and 2nd floor (bedrooms - we want to be able to stream media on devices here).

5. Also note: The E3000 router sits basically in the geographic center of the house, on the main (1st) floor. (approx. 40 ft x 30 ft each floor, top floor a little smaller). I dropped a cable next to the router through the flooring (yeah, took some serious drilling but well worth it) so I could bring it up and connect it to a switch on the first floor of the back side of the house, where I have my office, and thus where I hook up my two computers and printer via LAN. All good. (while I listen to music on my tablet over WiFi).

******************
Current frustration is from bedrooms on 2nd floor at front of house, front porch, and basement on front of house side. Can't get consistent I-net connection - inconsistent or none at all (at places in basement, like where I fold my laundry where I desperately need to stream from or be able to get Pandora). Soooo tired of the constant buffering and dropped connections (esp. when hubby and I are wrapped up in our respective Netflix movies or TV shows). (lol.)

Thinking, best way to add coverage to front of house is to add a second router? Drop a cable through existing hole next to router, bring it to front of house, up through a hole I am prepared to drill to have the router sit in the living room next to where the future smart TV will go. Bedrooms above and porch next to this and basement directly below will benefit from the additional signal.

-- Do you agree?
-- New ac network standard -- I understand this is much faster than n, which would be important for the TV (I think) --> should I be going for this, esp. if goal is to have something that I will be happy with for awhile? Is ac "enough better" than n, as I am reading online? to warrant additional cost? (My philosophy has always been, get the tech that's most "out front" as you can afford...)
-- If so, would you put the new ac standard router as the main one, and move the E3000 to be this secondary router at the front of the house?
-- Is LAN to LAN (one SSID, different IP's on each router) the way I should go? I want my devices to act like they are on one big network. (I think, unless you talk me out of it.) My one hesitation (any suggestions here) is that I get nervous about my son's gaming and websites he visits, that one of those malevolent people will get past the main router and infect the other devices on my network.
-- I realize that a smart TV will use only up to the slowest I-net connection; thus, hooking it to the e3000 n router will only give it that speed. Thinking, when that time comes, I could drop another cable from the main (ac) router under flooring and take it directly to the smart TV. Yes?
--best to get another Linksys router of some sort, or doesn't the brand matter? (although yes it is nice to have the same GUI on both just to make it easier on this lady)..(That WRT AC1900 looks very cool....worth paying for?) Wait til (when?) price comes down? Or am I overdoing it?
--Any other hints or advice you might have? I'm determined to get out of my life these frustrations of slow and/or intermittent connections and dead spots out of my house, now in early 2015. Especially I want to be mindful of my home business needs (which I am ramping up now in 2015), I-net important to this.

And a "how to" question -- (I feel dumb asking) --
When you add the second router, am I right that I need to disable DHCP on it, and also set its IP address as something outside of the existing IP triad (which is 192.168.1.1), say, make it 192.168.1.250 ?
Dumb question -- in configuring 2nd router (as in above statements), do I connect it to power and a PC via ethernet, make sure I turn off WiFi on my laptop (win 7) where I am configuring it from (so as not to be logging onto primary router)....this is not entirely clear to me in all the google posts I have been reading. In other words, can I connect laptop to router, WiFi off, power to router on, and log onto the 2nd router (if linksys, will have same IP as primary router). I see things that tell me to give it a different IP addres, but they don't supply detail as to how to make sure I'm not changing the main router...?

Thanks for any and all advice and help. If it were just me, that'd be one thing, but I've got my guys here to keep happy as well, and even if I have to pay more, it's worth having fast stuff that will last awhile since we are sooooo reliant on all this tech stuff (although I do not like being an idiot and buying anything that isn't worth the extra $ in the opinion of techs!)

Thanks much for your time in reading and posting.. Sorry for long post but I know you guys would be wanting to know the details in order to best help.

A: Please advise on best router to add and configuration for house of heavy data users

Are you concerned about 'ac' vs. 'n' because of file copies (or streaming) on your LAN? Or is your internet access faster than you can handle with 'n' Wi-Fi?

If you use a SOHO router as wireless access point following is the complete procedure.

JohnWill's procedure (Aug. 30, 2008) for configuring a secondary router as a switch and, optionally, wireless access point follows.

Connecting two (or more) SOHO broadband routers together.

Note: The "primary" router can be an actual router, a software gateway like Microsoft Internet Connection Sharing, or a server connection that has the capability to supply more than one IP address using DHCP server capability. No changes are made to the primary "router" configuration.

Configure the IP address of the secondary router(s) to be in the same subnet as the primary router, but out of the range of the DHCP server in the primary router. For instance DHCP server addresses 192.168.0.2 through 192.168.0.100, I'd assign the secondary router 192.168.0.254 as it's IP address, 192.168.0.253 for another router, etc.

Note: Do this first, as you will have to reboot the computer to connect to the router again for the remaining changes.

Disable the DHCP server in the secondary router.

Setup the wireless section just the way you would if it was the primary router, channels, encryption, etc.

Connect from the primary router's LAN port to one of the LAN ports on the secondary router. If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-over cable. [You will not need a cross-over cable if one of the "routers" is a computer.] Leave the WAN port unconnected! [TerryNet Note: assume that all routers made in the last five or six years or more have auto-sensing ports.]

This procedure bypasses the routing function (NAT layer) and configures the router as a switch (or wireless access point for wireless routers).

Background Story
Okay guys, so i found out were moving house a few weeks ago into a rural area. I looked about the internet and guess what, it was slow, im talking about not even 1mbit fast. Since my step-dad works from home and im a verrry heavy downloader, we needed to find a alternative solution.

So Far..
I looked into satalite internet, its expensive and still slow for the prices. To expensive infact.

So, now were looking at 3G internet, which apprently our new neighbours have and they get pretty decent speeds (t-mobile). I have seen this -

Code:
[URL]http://www.t-mobile.co.uk/shop/mobile-broadband/mbb/[/URL]
The idea is that my step-dad and my mum have 1 to share, my brother and sister share one and i get one to myself. But, 3GB seems a little low for me, are there any other options do you think guys?

I suggested getting (as well as the mobile sticks) a cheap broadband which is landline based so i get just plonk my downloads on and let them download 24/7 until there done. But it would be still be slow.

So please guys, any help is greatly appriciated, this new house is awesome.. but the internet speeds are putting me off big time.

OTHER NOTES -
I found a awesome orange stick, but turns out the coverage would be pathetic in my area.

Willing to reward for help.

Anti-virus software can be a great help to keep viruses and malware at bay, but AVG takes its responsibilities a bit further. Avid BitTorrent users who download files at near-maximum speeds get a friendly reminder from AVG explaining that they may want to pause their downloads to improve web browsing.

In recent years anti-piracy vendors have shown a keen interest in file-sharing and online piracy issues.

Symantec, for example, has developed a technology that allows it to spot fake torrents and malware before they?re downloaded.

On the other hand, rival McAfee have taken an anti-piracy approach by inventing a system that can detect and block pirated material from any website and present users with authorized and legal alternatives instead.

This week we learned that AVG, another major player in the anti-virus business, is keeping an eye on BitTorrent traffic as well. Not to detect intruders or stop piracy, but to give users some friendly advice.

BitTorrent traffic can chew up a lot of bandwidth and cripple one?s local network, especially with badly configured clients. This can slow down web browsing to a crawl, something AVG is alerting its users to.

The following alert pops up for some BitTorrent users. In this case related to traffic generated by uTorrent, but it may appear for other clients as well.

I've been saving up for an entry level DSLR (I know a SLR inside and out) but I have no idea what all these extra options are on DSLR's. I was thinking of sticking in the low range price wise since I still love my Pentax K1000, I use it more then digital. I found three cameras that I had help finding, but then was set on my own to choose out of the three.

Fujifilm FinePix S9000 9MP

Nikon D50

Pentax *ist DL (this one is set to be replaced I believe)

This is the company I plan to buy the camera from.

I recently did a full hard drive zero wipe and 7 home premium reload on a custom built pc.  Corsair 500 watt psu, 16 gb ram, MSI H77(some letter I forget)-G43 motherboard.  All went well and it ran fine at my place.  I got it all loaded up with my usual programs, office 2010 pro plus, adobe reader, flash player, new version of java, avg free, malwarebyes, ccleaner, chrome, vlc media player. And it was good.

I took it back to the owner and the next day he is saying the same problem is happening.  After leaving the computer alone for 15 minutes or so, it shuts down.

It NEVER did this at my place in 2 days of having it there, I checked it and let it sit undisturbed multiple times for this exact issue.  We checked all the power / sleep / hibernate settings, and it is all set to OFF or to never sleep / hibernate.

Any ideas?  I didn't use the owners' keyboard / mouse / monitor at my place, but I can't imagine any of them causing this problem.

I am thinking I can change the information in the file and restore it. Not sure exactly what to change?

I was also thinking I could pull the info from another computer running with the same operating system and reapply them to this file? Would this work?

I looked at Previous Versions of the upper level folder. Can I restore a previous version of this whole folder? Will it restore the Application Data folder with the prior permissions?

A:Lost Access Permissions to C:\Users\All Users\Application Data Folder

Are you asking about the Application Data or Appdata folder?

If Application Data, this is not a real folder but a junction used to allow interface with legacy programs. No access is necessary since it is pointing to the Appdata folder.

Hi, Im really head wrecked from this problem so id be so grateful if someone could help

I recently purchased a new Buffalo WZR-HP-G300NHZ after one of the attennas on my old buffalo WHR-HP-G300N broke off. (Both running DD-WRT)

Everything connected to it perfectly except my mothers dell inspiron 6000 running windows 7 which connected to and still will connect to my old router.

I tried disabling all firewalls nothing changed, messed with the router setting and still non difference. It doesn't even recognise when its plugged in directly to the router.

it first says getting information from network, asks me to enter security code, and after about 3-5 mins of waiting says "unable to connect"

everything else in my house connects perfectly, which is what I find so strange about it

OK. We're leaving our home here in Fl and moving in with our daughter in Me. She has a two story house with two computers upstairs (one a wireless laptop) and there will be three computers (including mine) downstairs. Four of the computers don't have wireless cards. I'd like a rather simple explanation of just how I can set it all up to work from an existing Verizon DSL service. Right now there are two Verizon DL routers and both my granddaughter and my daughter are paying seperate bills. So, what I'm asking is how can I set it all up so we have only one bill to pay and all of our computers connect to the same wireless router? If this sounds confusing, then you know how confusing it is to my 70 year old mind! LOL

We got sky when we moved into our current house around may this year. It's an old house with thick walls. the router is plugged in the office at one end of the house, i use laptop in kitchen (which has a weak signal and disconnects frequently) and son wants to use x-box in his bedroom - but signal nowhere near strong enough to beam that far through thick walls.

I'm not very well up on what we need. I've thought about moving the router, but with the 3 rooms needing a connection there's no central point that all 3 could share.

Do we need a second router? or is there some kind of booster we could buy?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Hawking Tech has a number of products that will help you increase your wireless range. The root page is Hawking Hi-Gain™ WiFi Range Extending Products.

Some of the more interesting products are this Hawking [HSB2] Hi-Gain WiFi Signal Booster, which can be used on either end of a wireless connection to boost the signal power.

Another way to increase your signal strength is by the use of hi-gain antennas. You can choose from omni-directional or directional models, here are a some examples.

Hawking [HAI7SIP] Hi-Gain 7dBi Omni-Directional Antenna

Hawking [HAI15SC] Hi-Gain 15dBi Corner Antenna

[HAO14SD] Outdoor Hi-Gain 14dBi Directional Antenna Kit

For 802.11n applications, this ZyXEL ANT1106 6db omni-directional antenna can be used.

For really long range outdoor applications, this 24dB parabolic WiFi Antenna may be a good choice.

If you have a wireless adapter that doesn't have provisions for an external antenna, one adapter that I've had good luck with is a Rosewill RNX-G1 USB Wireless Adapter. It's feature is that is has a removable antenna and will accommodate replacement antennas.

This is just a sample of available products, many people have hi-gain antennas with similar specifications, but I haven't seen any other suppliers of signal boosters.

I called tech support but they were basically useless, only thing they really did was a test to see whether it was sending/ recieving any packets; and it sent 4 and recieved 4 back. On the router the light with a pic of a telephone able it flashes every so often and the one with the picture of a globe above it doesnt come on at all. Iv reconfigured at my new house using the auto set up thing but that didnt helped at all. I'm running ethernet (cat5e) through my house and doing the actual wiring; this is the first time for me.
I have the locations drilled and I'm all set to start running the cables. I need some advice on how to do the wiring from the DSL to the keystone to the router to the switch

Here's the current setup, as AT&T originally wired the house:

DSL --[cat5]--> Keystone --[cat5]--> AT&T_router -> wireless/ethernet.

I noticed in the Cat5 that connects the DSL to the keystone in the house's interior, only 2 wires are used (the green and white/green I think) on the side that connects to the DSL, and the same two that connect to the keystone inside the house which then connects to the U-verse router. As far as I know it's a regular Cat5 that goes from the keystone to the router. With my new setup I'm going to move the router which will be connected to a switch before branching out to the rest of the house (wireless will no longer be used).

Here's what I assume I should do....

1) Use only 2 wires on the end for the Cat5 that connects to the DSL box outside the house.
2) Use only 2 wires for the RJ45 jack that goes into the router's uplink port, inside the house (unlike the original configuration, there will be no keystone between the DSL and the router).
3) Regular Cat5 wiring (T568B) from one of the router's ports connecting it to the switch.
4) Regular Cat5 wiring (T568B) from the switch to the computers.

It's po... Read more

A:Wiring My House with Cat5. Which Wires to Use from DSL to Router?

Typical home wiring for phone PSTN systems have 4 wires (2 pairs). Some may have 6 wires. The two inner pairs are for the primary phone circuit for the home. The outer pair is used if you paid for a second phone line service. Because phone systems were the first "network", the subsequent wiring standards of T568A or B were done in such a manner to be compatible with existing phone systems. So what this means is that if you wire your house with T568B, it doesn't matter whether you plug in a phone or a network device. The pin outs of the jack will support what ever you want to plug in to it. In my house, I have various rooms where I have some RJ45 jacks. I can provision those ports to be either LAN drops of phone drops by just switching the other end of the cable to either my switch or a patch panel for phone service. Yes, this means you can plug in an RJ11 jack into an RJ45 jack.

We are looking at getting bright house internet asap as we are very upset with at&t. I have no idea what brand and model bright house supplies. I've read in researching various past issues that often times there are recommendations of going with a router not supplied by the internet provider. We have one pc, two laptops, two tablets, at least 3 smartphones, dish tv box, one smart tv's, and two roku that use the internet. Of those only the pc is wired the rest use Wi-Fi. I'm pretty sure all of them have wireless n capability. If needed more details on the devices can be provided to verify that if needed. What should we do/get?

I know that a lot of the providers use a combo "Modem/Router" unit to provide WiFi in the home.

I am new in setting up a vpn and not so much familiar with others things or what setup is necessary, kindly help the poor guy please???

This is what I need:
- I need to connect the VPN FIREWALL router and use its features at the same time connected to the internet ( the VPN FIREWALL will act as the security for the whole network and the 4G modem/router will be the one supplying the internet)
- Need to establish a VPN connection later after the configuration.
- The server and other lan pc's must be accessible outside the local network when connected to VPN (web server, local pc's shared folder and files, etc)

Here's some details that i hope might help:
- I am using a Quanta 1K5 4G LTE modem/router combo

- My VPN FIREWALL brand/model is Micronet SP881 B VPN FIREWALL router
- Right now i am already connected to the internet using the vpn firewall physical connection is:
4G modem/router-->hub-->VPN firewall router-->PC
my connection is 4G(LAN)-->VPN (WAN) set the connection type to Dynamic IP
-The remote connection and remote access (web server, ftp,RDP) is working fine on the 4G modem/router alone.

Is my theory sound, and should this get things back to normal? I tried to find out how I would go about doing this through google and ended up at this site. I understand I could use another PC to put my harddrive in, and copy the needed data from there onto my external hardrive? Could I get more info on this? Thanks, I just want to beat this damn issue.

When I bought my rig, the builder had put the wrong memory in it. They read the build sheet as "Corsair or Major Brand" and "upgraded" me to A-Data Gaming Series. The thing is, I had ordered Corsair Dominator. They were OOS of the Dom when I picked it up, so they offered to refund the upgrade fee and keep the A-Data, or ship the Dom to me when it was restocked. I went with the latter and have been running off the A-Data for over a month. I received the Dom a few weeks ago, but did not have the chance to pop it into my rig until today. I ran CPU-Z and now I am wondering if the Dom specs are truly better that the A-Data or not (I am not that well-versed in memory ratings and such). I think I would still have the option of shipping the Dom back and keeping the A-Data, but I want to keep whatever is best. Please advise.

Corsair Dominator SPD tab

A-Data Mem tab

From the Mem tabs, the Dom looks better than the A-Data, but to me the SPD tabs make it look as if the A-Data is better than the Dom. Maybe I am just reading this wrong. I dunno. I be . Any explanations will be greatly appreciated. TIA!

BTW, if there is a better util to run to rate my mem, please let me know and I can do that. It will not be a problem to pop the A-Data back in and get a reading.

You should check whenever the A-Data are especially made for the i7 processor series...on the manufacturer site or your retailler.

I disassembled the Powerbook G4 12" which is a very laborious and painful experience, just to recover the Internal Hitachi 5400RPM ATA/IDE 160MB Hard Drive. My Dilemma is that I have precious turbo tax files from Tax Clients and thousands of other files on that HD and I'm sure the 160GB HD is ok. I need advise as the best economical way to transfer files from that bare internal HFS Formatted ATA/IDE Drive to a USB External drive. I have a working USB 2.0 External drive case that has a typical Enhanced IDE Drive with a 36 Pin Ribbon cable. I have transferred 4 other Mac Formatted ATA drive files with this same USB external enclosure to the Toshiba listed below, all drives were formatted Mac OS HFS. The win freeware utility I found that worked well was called RUN HFSexplorer and I found on either sourgeforce or about.com blog. Now the real challenge is how to connect that Hitachi 5400RPM ATA/IDE 160MB Hard Drive that has a 48 pin connector to my Enhanced IDE Drive with a 36 Pin cable. It must also must provide power to the ATA/IDE Drive. The only easy way if possible would be renting or obtaining another Macbook that might have a compatible internal drive connector, but that's dicey also, and who has a spare Macbook lying around? I think you can simply connect the Hitachi internal drive to a USB adapter and plug it straight into the Toshiba laptop. There's no need to move the files onto another external Usb drive first.

Something like this should work :- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812156017

Why would you want a USB modem built-in to the router? Are you looking to connect a router to an existing USB modem? If so, that's not going to fly, you need an Ethernet modem for the router.

I am having nightmares with my Linksys WRT54G and Vista (router was purchased back in 2000 or so, pretty old and can't upgrade anymore), I am looking into getting a new wireless router but I need some help as networking is so far out for me.

My SSID has a name and I am using WPA encryption.I have Comcast 16Mbit Broadband and Vista x64 dual booting with Windows 7 on 1 WIRED PC, I also have 2 more WIRELESS PCs running XP Pro w/SP3. My computer specs are listed.

I have an issue with one of the wireless PCs (XP w/SP3) disconnecting and connecting all the time and I figured that all it needs is to be updated from its firmware... I am hoping I am right, otherwise, I will be looking for a new wireless hub soon as well.

The PC with Vista is another story, sometimes it works fine but, and this is mostly on the other user with admin rights (my wife), after it goes to sleep and it is awaken, she looses internet connectivity and needs to restart. sometimes, 10 minutes into a session, internet is lost and there is a need to restart. Suffice to say... my SEX life is now suffering because of this issue

I have tried using Comcast DNS and I have also tried using the Open DNSs to no avail so I figured that the main issue here is the router being that it is pretty old.

I am thinking that 100 bucks should fetch me a pretty decent router, less would be better but I am also willing to spend a little more if it will fix my issues and will last me what this one did... the latter is not a dea... Read more

I am not experienced with networking and have limited help locally. I work in an office with 4 PCs running Win XP Home edition. All machines are hooked through a Linksys BEFSR 41 LAN router, to the internet via a Toshiba cable modem.

We have another computer with WinXP Pro being installed and will be used to act as a host for files, programs, etc. File sharing will be set so any of us can access files whenever we need to. 2 of us also want to be able to work from home and so I've been told using a VPN router is the way to go. One person has suggested NetGear.

I am looking for a VPN router that will be low cost, easy to set up and maintain, and be reliable.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have two PCs and a very fast cable connection. I would like to get either a switch or router so that I can use both PCs to access the net at the same time.

Can anyone explain to me what is a switch? It sounds like a way to use one PC or the other but not both at the same time.

Also can anyone please advise me what are the pros and cons of a wireless router vs a wired router?

I also got a new Sony DVD player (Actually a Blu-Ray player) and it has a connection so that I can plug the Internet into that DVD player (I think it's called an Ethernet connection?).

I've been told I can use this DVD player to access Youtube and play their video files. Can I plug both PCs as well as this DVD player into the router and use them all at the same time?

Hey guys, I need help modifying my network/internet setup at my house and guesthouse. This is how my current setup looks like. Main house has the DSL(dynamic IP) modem, connected to a Netgear WGR614 wireless G router(DHCP) 1 laptop connects via wireless to that, and a cat 5 wire going from one of the ports to the guesthouse bedroom in wall plug, and connected to it is a Dlink Dir-625 wireless n router. I have 2 computers connected to the router wirelessly. With this setup my Internet connection is inconsistent in the guesthouse. And recently I bought a Denon AVR-3808 Audio receiver in the living room that needs to be connected to the internet via Ethernet wire., and I don?t have access to that. Let me give you more info on the Distance between the farthest point of the guesthouse, and the position of the modem and wireless router is in the main house. It?s about 60-75ft, 5 walls in between, and 2 of the walls would be the outside stucco walls?? I need suggestions on how to do this the right way. My Denon audio receiver is the only equipment that need to connect to the Internet via Ethernet cable, and I don?t have access to that??

Thank you in advance
Raffi.

A:Network/internet setup between my house and the guest house

First off, get stability from Main to Guest by using wired access. If this is not stable,
then the wireless will not be either. Update the Netgear WGR614 firmware.

Wireless will bog down when it is encrypted, but you need that to avoid your neighbors
from getting access to your systems.

Which location (Main/Guest) has the worse reliability issue?

I know this is going to sound awful but get your OWN internet connection. The distance is too great for a wireless network and probably wouldn't work terribly well by hardwiring it (and that's assuming you can get past the physical problems of installing the cable externally). You may be able to use a powerline network connection (not sure if these will work on an extended intranet) but the setup costs are still pretty high for now.

Really - fork out the few dollars that a internet connection of your own will cost. Much better proposition all round.

I was on my PC, my dual boot failed, windows boot configuration data is now gone. I don't have a system install disk, don't have an order number the manufacturer needs to send me one, nothing I've tried worked. The status error is 0xc0000098. Is there a way to fix it without the install disk? Some sort of repair tool I can download? If I could even get a command prompt open I could fix it but it won't boot at all.

A:Boot configuration data gone

Downloading Repair ISO which is small size file is illegal as per Microsoft. But you can download the ISO for Windows 8.1 Enterprise Evaluation, burn it to a blank DVD and then use it to repair your system. The file size is more than 3 GB.

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/hh771457.aspx

OR  Just ask one of your friends for their Windows 8 DVD and repair your system in a few minutes.

This is why you should create a repair disk the first time you boot your Windows computer.

I recently booted up my Gateway notebook only to find the "blue screen of death"

I rebooted and it came up to a windows boot manager screen which says windows failed to start..insert installation disc and click repair to fix...blah blah...i'm sure you know the story...

My question is, I booted the Vista disc and when I click repair it doesn't even find the C: drive...when I try and run the BCD fix from the command prompt screen, it says it found 0 Windows installations...would this indicate a faulty hard drive?? If so, I dont mind replacing the drive, I just wanna make sure this is the issue before I spend the money to replace it...

Much thanks for any help anyone can offer!

A:Boot Configuration Data Error

I'm not sure what BCD fix you tried, but see if it is this one and if not, try this one.

To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps: (you need a Vista Installation Disk to do this)

1. Put the Windows Vista installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
2. Press a key when you are prompted.
3. Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
4. Click Repair your computer.
5. Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
6. In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
7. Type Bootrec.exe, and then press ENTER.

Note If rebuilding the BCD does not resolve the startup issue, you can export and delete the BCD, and then run this option again. By doing this, you make sure that the BCD is completely rebuilt. To do this, type the following commands at the Windows RE command prompt:
 bcdedit /export C:\BCD_Backup
 c:
 cd boot
 attrib bcd -s -h -r
 ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /RebuildBcd

See if that works.

If you don't have the disk (or that didn't work), try EasyBCD http://neosmart.net/dl.php?id=1 and see if that helps resolve the problem.

If that doesn't work, you probably have some type of hardware problem - but it's hard to tell. It may be as simple as the hard drive cable got disconnected a... Read more

I'm trying to connect a C# program to an Access database, but the wizard keeps crashing every time... Here's as far as I can get...

Move OLEDBDataAdapter to current form.
Wizard opens up
Click "New Connection"
Click "Change"
Select "Microsoft Access Database File" from combo box.
Click "OK"
Type "PROVIDER=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;DATA SOURCE="C:\\Data\\TimeSheet.mdb;" into the ConnectionString text box (tried leaving it blank as well).
Click "Test Connection"
Receive "Test connection succeeded." message box
Click OK
Click OK to continue wizard

This is where I receive the error message, which is

"Format of the initialization string does not conform to specification starting at index 0."

If I set up the connection, data adapter, and dataset in the program itself, I don't have any problem, just if I try to use the wizard. Also tried to set it up in VB .NET, but have the exact same problem. Thanks in advance.

A:Boot Configuration Data got corrupted

Hi toasterbot,

It's not an uncommon issue mate, and not that hard to fix. You will need to boot from your Windows disk to fix it .

Boot your computer using Windows installation media
Select the correct time and Keyboard type.
Click Repair your computer in the lower left corner.
Select Troubleshoot from Choose an option screen.
Click Advanced options in Troubleshoot screen.
Click on command Prompt.
Type these following commands one at a time and hit enter after each line of command:

Bootrec /fixmbr
Bootrec /fixboot
Bootrec /scanos
Bootrec /rebuildbcd
shutdown -s

After about a minute after the last command your machine will shutdown. You can remove the Windows media now.

Restart your machine.

Is your issue resolved?

That will just repair the boot configuration without any problem.

There are various boot disks HERE and the Ultimate Boot CD

but I`m not sure they would be much use.

HOWEVER once the router(dlink DLR-645) is plugged in to the cable modem the bandwidth essentially cuts in half (@7mbps)or more of the 20mbps service I subscribe to.

I know that the router can be successfully configured because it was set up in the past but I no longer have the information to do it anymore.

Startup repair (up to 3x consecutive runs might be needed, but probably only 1) will fix it.

You might try your luck with "finding" a Win 8 (or 8.1 if you have that instead) .iso to burn or make a USB out of, so you get to startup repair. Check hashes if you do this, compared to known well discs or official disc.

Someone will probably have a suggestion or two how to get one. Maybe even officially.

It would be helpful to everyone if you give the exact machine model and submodel (if there is one).

Does anyone no how to fix this? Yesterday I got a UAC Zero Access Virus and tried using windows repair disc to go back to a restore point. That just made everything worse and now I can't boot into windows at all. I have a multiboot PC (its set to just windows 8 and windows 7 right now, windows 7 being the biggest partition on the drive).

If you have access to another Windows 7 computer create a System Repair Disk. Boot it and do a Startup Repair. It may take up to three attempts to fully do the repair. If you have 64bit then you would need to find a Windows 7 64bit computer.

Hi Kevin Hill I guess you're trying to use BCDEdit from the command prompt? You need to right-click on the Windows logo and select Command Prompt (Administrator) otherwise it won't work as you need Admin Rights to use that utility.

Hello. Last night I set Acronis Disk Director to merge two partitions on my C drive.
I had an unnallocated 100mb that used to be partitioned as system reserved, but I deleted that partition as it was not needed. So I made a new partition out of that unallocated space and set it to merge with my primary partition on my c drive. It restarted my computer and 40% through, showed an error and restarted quickly. Now I get the following message when attempting to boot my computer:

File: \Boot\BCD
Status: 0xc0000225
Info: The Boot Configuration Data for your PC is missing or contains errors.

The second partition, that I attempted to merge, now has 1mb of space on it. Whenever I try to run chkdsk on the primary partition, it says that the disk structure is corrupt and uunreadable.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I need my c drive recovered.

So I have been literally trying to fix my windows not being able to boot at all for more than 12 hours straight till now. I almost read every single article and troubleshooting step on the web to find a solution but nothing seems to work. I will keep it short as much as I can.

I was playing the Division game on my PC then suddenly the PC crashed and then it restarted by itself but stuck at the windows logo forever. I tried system restore using the windows recovery CD then it failed as well, since then, whenever I try to boot from my HDD, it gives the error 0xc00000f "The Boot configuration data for your pc is missing or contains errors"

I then boot through the CD in the cd drive, have only 4 or 5 options which are

1 - Reset this PC
2 - Refresh this PC
3 - System Restore
4- Command Prompt
5- Automatic Repair

the "Reset this PC" gave an error "The required drive partition is missing"
the "Refresh this PC" gave an error "The drive where windows is installed is locked. Please unlock and try again"
the system restore gave an error something I don't actually remember but its like "Choose your OS and then try again"

I tried the so-called commands in the CMD (bootrec /fixboot, /fixmbr, /rebuildbcd, etc...) and all didn't work. Also the rebuildbcd command showed that "Total identified windows installations is ZERO"

Tried the diskpart command as well and when I listed all the volumes, all appeared as Healthy a... Read more

However, if I want to connect to a slingbox to my tv upstairs which requires a hard wired ethernet connection, what are my options?

Can I configure an access point for this or will I have to look at one of Cicso Power type options for this type of needed connection?

I recently purchased and installed a Linksys RT31P2 wired router while converting to Vonage VoIP. I installed the RT31P2 behind an Actiontec GT-701 DSL Gateway (modem/router). I plugged a telephone into the RT31P2 and my VoIP phone service works great. Because my Actiontec GT-701 DSL Gateway only has 1ea Ethernet port, I had to remove my local computer from the Actiontec Ethernet port so that I could connect the RT31P2 to the same Ethernet port. After removing the local computer from the Ethernet port on the Actiontec GT-701, I moved it an open Ethernet port on the RT31P2. How to power cycle

“power cycle” process to reboot or reset the modem/router

Switch off all the devices modem, router and computers also unplug their power cables.
Wait at least 1 to 5 minutes. We have found in some instances you need to wait at least 15 minutes
Plug the power cords back in, but don’t switch them on.
First turn on the modem and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Next switch on the router (if a separate device) and then wait for a few minutes for it to settle and all the lights to become stable.
Now turn on your computer, You should now be able to access the Internet.

I have a (hopefully rather basic) problem with the configuration of my new D-Link router DIR-657.

Now, what I had in mind was rather simple, but apparently I don't know the correct settings to
achieve it... (A lack of knowlegde on my side, I guess. I have some experience setting up simple
networks with a few windows computers and broadband modems, but the last time was some
time ago and this one here seems to be a bit more complicated than I thought...)

I have one PC (Win7 Ultimate 64) with a 3G modem (via USB) and want to use this computer (PC1)
and the 3G connection to act as the internet connection (using ICS) for my home network.
This computer now connects to the new D-Link router (via LAN).
I want to use this router to connect the other devices in this network (LAN/WLAN) with PC1 so they
can also use this internet connection (via ICS) and also for the other basic network uses (file sharing,
printing, ...).
The setup of ICS was not a problem (I think) and the local network (LAN/WLAN) is working alright,
but how do I have to configure the router so he "knows" that all internet traffic is going through the
3G connection (ICS) at PC1 (LAN port) and not its WAN port (which is empty) while maintaining
the functionality of the network (file sharing, printer,...) of course.

[FYI... I want to use PC1 (with 3G) for my internet connection because I want/need the VPN
connection I have installed on this PC. While there are a few (WLAN-)router out there that can

A:Wi-Fi router proxy configuration help

Port forwarding has these requirements

the machine to which the forward will point to must have a static IP address
once port(s) are so configured, NO OTHER system will be able to use those ports.
(1) can be done manually on the target system, or more easily in the router by using IP Address Reservation.

Pg 33 of the manual describes (1)

Is there any security benefit (extra firewall, etc) from using two routers to connect to the internet. For example, this computer connects to port 1 on my Netgear. From the WAN port, a wire connects the port 4 of my Dlink. The WAN port of my DLink connects, of course, to my modem and the Internet. second question...how do I access the secondary router. Anytime I type in "192.168.0.1", I only access the DLink interface. (I was confused about configuring the Static IP on the secondary Netgear so I left it as is) Any ideas/ suggestions. Can I somehow use this dual router to my benefit?

I have a Netgear (RP614) and DLink (DI 714P+). Networking has always somewhat eluded me, and I was wondering what benefits/unique configurations may be derived from two routers.

Here is the setup.

Thanks in advance

Hello everyone.
I just acquired a tablet (Transformer Prime) and wanted to add another wifi router to my network connection as a way to increase the signal on my room. I tried following the instructions on this Linksys help article:
http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=80&login=1&app=search&vw=1&articleid=4579

I've tried the first method described and completed all steps and still couldn't connect the second router. when i connect both by the ethernet socket only the first one, unaldutered, worked providing internet access to my PC by wire but the second one didn't increased reception on the tablet at all.
Ipconfig shows no sign of any other device besides the working router when they are connected by the ethernet socket. When i connect only the second router ipconfig reveals there is no "Connection-specific DNS Suffix" and "Default Gateway". I cant change options back to normal in the web browser because i dont have a default gateway number anymore

What have i done wrong? how can i fix this and configure this damn router to give me my precious wifi speed?
Any help would be appreciated and I'm verry sorry for the long and badly explained post (im a noob with pcs, to say the least)

BTW: first post, but I'll introduce myself later on a proper post

A:Problems with second router configuration

Reset the second router to factory default settings and try the following procedure. It is the same as your linked article Option 1, but maybe it will be easier for you to follow.

If there is no uplink port and neither of the routers have auto-sensing ports, use a cross-... Read more

For some time now, my home LAN has been experiencing some problems. The router (an ss2624 speedstream wireless) sometimes doesn't want to work, (or most of the time) and sometimes it does. I have three computers connected to it, and they all can access the router's web page. However, none of the computers recieve internet access.

One of my computers is able to connect the the cable modem directly and receive internet. I use all the numbers I see from running winipcfg on my directly connected computer when I setup the router, but for some reason the router will not work. I make it so that it uses a static IP address from the ISP (which I'm not entirely sure even is static, even though I always see that same IP address, I also see a DHCP server number) and also I put the DNS server I see, although I am able to choose between 4 different numbers. (I put the others as alternate.) Am I missing any information from my ISP?

A:Router configuration problems

Set your router back up to receive DHCP if your ISP requires it. Sometimes ISP's use private IP's for you, that conflict with your current router config. If your router IP is 192.168.1.1, then make sure the IP that you get from your ISP is not 192.168.1.(1-254) Earthlink is bad about this. If it is the case, just change your router (inside address, not the external ISP address) to 192.168.10.1 or something other than 192.168.1.1 just change the second to the last number to anything else.

Not the best at drawing a mental picture here. but

If WAN address is 192.168.1.1
and router is 192.168.1.1 , they conflict. Plus the router needs a different network like 192.168.2.1 for you to be NAT'd

Hope this helps.

Hi folks,

Glad to be on board, this website came highly reccommended by to me by some fellow members of a Boston Red Sox fansite, and I must say, the info here is great.

I finally have a question to ask:

Recently, I set up a pretty complete wired home network so that I could work from home more often. In so doing, I added two laptops and another desktop to my office, which used to house just a single desktop. They are all connected to my cable modem through a router.

Over the past several months, my partners and I have been using AIM and MSN Messenger's talk programs (I believe this is called Voice-over-IP, is it not?) pretty regularly throughout the day to stay in touch.

When the single PC was connected to the internet without a router, these programs worked easily and flawlessly. Now, as the four PC's are connected to the internet through the router (and are therefore behind the router's firewall??) I can not use either application for voice conversations on any one of the four PC's. Simply put, they will not establish a connection to my peers on the other end.

I am now on my second router (switched from D-Link to Belkin). The tech support from both companies has been horrible, and neither has been able to help me connect using these apps at all. They are all pretty sure that I will eventually need to open the correct port or ports, and will need to configure the router accordingly, but none of them seems to know how to do so themselves, and as suc... I sent over a Linksys DIR-615 router to a friend in Venezuela as he does not have any wireless internet, now from my understanding and what he has explained he has a modem to router connection already, however the router does not have wireless.

He got the router today and I told him to replace his current router with the one I sent him. Now the connection going from his modem to router wouldn't work in the WAN port. So we placed it in LAN ports along with his two PCs and great, he got internet on both computers but he can't access the router configuration to set the wireless.

Now I made sure it all worked before I sent it, I replaced the router I have at home with it and it worked with the IP 192.168.0.1
However when he enters that it doesn't bring him to the router configuration, nor with 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2, 192.168.0.2 and some others.

So I told him to use ipconfig to get the gateway IP and trying to use that to access the router, but still it won't work.
The Ipconfig looked like:

Adaptador Ethernet Conexión de área local :

Sufijo de conexión específica DNS : cantv.net
Dirección IP. . . . . . . . . . . : 201.210.21.98
Máscara de subred . . . . . . . . : 255.255.224.0
Puerta de enlace predeterminada : 201.210.0.1

So basically I have come here in search for help on how I can get to the router configuration and enable the wireless for them.
Anything you ask I can ask of him and report back.

Thanks in advance!

A:Need help with router configuration connection.

So.is there a default gateway listed in the ipconfig above ?
And you said linksys.Did you mean d link ?
Is the ISP cable or dsl ?The setup would be different I believe.
Might be a good idea to go back to basics, just to make sure that everything was done in the correct order.Like so.
Tips on setting up broadband connection, courtesy of Johnwill

You don't need any setup disk to configure a broadband router.
. The following procedure should get you a connection with any broadband modem that is configured to use DHCP for the router connection, such as cable modems, and many DSL modems. If you require PPPoE configuration for the DSL modem, that will have to be configured to match the ISP requirements.
• Turn off everything, the modem, router, computer.
• Connect the modem to the router's WAN/Internet port.
• Connect the computer to one of the router's LAN/Network ports.
• Turn on the modem, wait for a steady connect light.
• Turn on the router, wait for two minutes.
• Boot the computer.

When the computer is completely booted, let's see this.

My computer wouldn't wake from sleep mode a few days ago so I hard rebooted it. When it booted I no longer had internet access.

My local area connection was listed as an unidentified network with no network access. I used the troubleshoot tool on the connection and it returned "the router does not have a valid IP configuration". I could not change the network from public to home/private.

I am able to connect to the internet using the same router and cable on this laptop. The wireless is also working fine.

I have tried:
disabling and enabling the network adaptor, DHCP and the local connection
updating the network card drivers
disabling ipv6 in local connection
Resetting the router to factory settings
I disabling bonjour (I do not have and have never installed mcafee)
clearing the TCP/IP stack with netsh int ip reset
using ipconfig /release /flushdns /renew
system restoring to before the issue occurred
doing a clean install of windows (it saved my old files under windows.old - I assume this is still a clean install)

I am running windows 7 home premium 64, my network card is an Intel 82567LF-2 Gigabit, the router is a Thomson TG782T and I am using Bigpond ADSL2+.

It's been a couple of days and I'm well out of my depth. I didn't expect the issue to continue after a clean install. Any help would be really appreciated. Attached is the ipconfig I get. Attachment 288972

If you could attach your ipconfig please because I can't see it

This can help us determine possible causes

Not sure if I'm in the right forum. A couple months ago I had to switch providers, and had to get hooked up with a wireless router. Ever since then, my download speeds have crash landed.

I'm running XP. Any tips on where to go for help would be appreciated.

thanks!

What bandwidth are you supposed to be getting?

What speeds do you get with a test such as Speakeasy connecting by wireless, by ethernet to the router and directly to the modem?

Hi everyone, new here. I've just got a buffalo airstation WZR-1750HP and i cannot for the life of me configure it for internet access. I have entered my isp username/password but still no joy. I must admit i'm utterly hopeless with networking, but not bad with other computer matters. Hoping some wireless whizz kids can tell me what my settings must be.

A:router configuration woes

Dual band AC routers can be tricky as they sometimes are not compatible with older wireless N clients.

Best to upgrade any wireless n NIC's to AC NIC's if they can't connect consistently.

Also depends on if there are any other routers in the network, or if the modem is a modem/router or just stand alone modem, not enough information here for me to give directions.

A:router configuration panel????

The router configuration panel differs from brand to brand. Linksys, for example, has a default of 192.168.1.1, with a blank username and 'admin' as the password. DLink routers use 192.168.0.1.

Do you know what the IP of your router is?

Hello.

My sister dropped her laptop on the ground yesterday, and for her job, she needs to access the internet quite a lot.
I allowed her to mail on my computer in another account now while I'm at work.
How can I restrict her from accessing the hard drive, plugging in usb, run executables, change themes and that stuff?
She only needs the Opera browser.

I'm not that good with group policy

Thanks,
- JustCall

A:Restricting other users from data.

Hey JustCall,

Have you tried looking into Parental Controls?
How To Use Parental Controls in Windows 7

It may be a little simpler for you then reworking all the system permissions.

Although you can look at removing her user from the Users group, and then assigning specific permissions to her folders, which would prevent her accessing other files on the machine.

In fact -- User Rights Assignment - Add or Remove Users and Groups

Is probably what you should read through, it will help you to understand some parts of Group Policies.

The most basic thing for GP, don't change what you do not need to.

I need to access the "Application Data" folder under "All Users" and have been unable to do so. Initially I was denied permission so I changed ownership of the folder but now instead of an "access denied" message, it simply opens the main "All Users" directory in a new window without entering the "Application Data" folder.

How do I get around this?

A:All users Application Data

You've set this setting here yet?

I just bought a new HP Windows Home Premium 64bit HP PC and am migrating over (slowly) from an older XP machine. I have set up 3 user accounts, two of them standard, and would like two of the accounts (only) to share some of the same data files. For example, I use Picasa for photo storage and I would like to share one folder with pictures between me (admin account) and my wife (standard account). The third standard account (Guest) I would like to not have access to these folders. Same with our password folder (which contains just one file).
What is the best way to set up accounts and folders to accomplish this?

A:How can two users share the same data?

Welcome

Hello. Recently I have had a job promotion, so to speak, and I now have access to a computer in the office. Long story short, when either my boss or I switch users, we always lose each others data unless we logoff everytime. It isn't a real big deal to me as I am only as occasional user but, the other day he had something all wrote up and I ended up deleting it by accident. And if the computer is idle for more than a few minutes it logs itself off, quite a handy feature, LOL.......... On my home PC there is a way to make the computer save the logged off user but, I haven't been able to set it up on this one?????? This PC has alot of security settings on it and I am not used to it yet. The computer uses Windows XP Professional and has Lotus Notes for the e-mail which I am finding quite a challenge to learn. Thanx.

I downloaded the Grissom House from TheSimsZone.co.uk, it's lovely in the picture, yet when I install it and run the game and click on it to put it in the neighborhood, it freezes the game.

I erased all the files of the Grissom House I could find in My Documents/EA Game/The Sims ... But the house still shows up in the Lots and Houses Bin. In fact, there's two copies in it right now.

Basically, this question is just for vanity purposes: Is there any way I can get rid of the 2 copies in the Lots and Houses Bin without having to click the house and manually delete it, seeing as how the game freeze when I click on either copy.

A:TS2 Freezes up after clicking a house in the Lot and House Bin.

Yes,Go to MOD THE SIMS 2 site and download SIMS CLEAN INSTALLER.
Open the program and brouse the the drop down box and look for the 'hood where this house is you want to delete.
