[SOLVED] Expanding the start menu

Q: [SOLVED] Expanding the start menu

OK, I know I'm just being an idiot here, but I can't find what I'm looking for.

When I click on the start menu, I'm only seeing the most recent programs that I ran. I know there is a setting someplace that will show all programs, not just the most recent ones, but I can't find it.

I have already changed the settings to use the classic start menu, not the XP menu.

Can someone help me?

Using WinXP Home Sp2.

On my start bar I have lots of folders listed, and as a result, Win shrinks the start bar down to my recently used folders. This is really annoying because I always have to click the expanding buttons at the bottom of the start menu - see bellow.

Is there anyway to have the start menu contsantly expanded by default so I don't have to keep manually expanding it?

Late,

Ok, so I installed windows 7 64bit RC on my computer last night. Everything is going good. All of my programs work.

On the top of the start menu is the Getting Started Folder <startmenu1.jpg & startmenu2.jpg>

I like how the folder expands and I'd really like it if there is some way for me to make my own customized folder on the top of the start menu in place of the Getting Started Folder with my own shortcuts inside. Is this possible?

I love the Windows 7 Start Menu, and its versitality astounds me at times, but the inability for the "Computer" menu to be completely expandable cripples quite a bit of my productivity...

This problem does not exist with the personal menu, which quite frankly I could care less about completely expanding.

In general, Windows 7 has seemed to abandon the concept of expanding menus which can actually make things much much quicker at least for me, but I have gotten a separate toolbar working in the taskbar, but this seems inconvenient coming from someone who has always used classic menus on the Start Menu.

Don't get me wrong, I am very GLAD that Windows 7 makes such improvements to the way the start menu functions and in general these improvements have greatly added to my efficiency, but this really cripples someone like me!

Any suggestions?

I'm not sure, but I think I understand what you are asking. You would like your page to look like this http://www.sarahsteinberg.netfirms.com/Performances.htm ??
1. Creat a bulleted list
2. Indent items that you would like to be hidden at first.
3. Highlight your indented list, click Format > Bullets and Numbering.

Hey Peeps,

I have Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed on my system. Had to do some Windows Updates recently and since Tuesday I have noticed that the Open With context menu does not expand.

I have not installed anything funny or weird, had no virusses or malware, and it just does not make sense at all.

As can be seen in the screenshot attached, I do a normal right-click (tried Shift+Right Click - does the same) hover over the 'Open With' item and then....nothing. This is a major pain in the neck as I open several files using Notepad.

I prefer not to perform a repair install of Windows 7 as the repair install usually overwrites installed updates. Any advice or tricks I can try will be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks.

I have Windows XP Pro, SP2.

I have a situation where a program shows on "All Programs" but not in C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs or C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs in Explorer. How can I see that shortcut or whatever in Explorer?

Also, on C:\Documents and Settings\username\Start Menu\Programs and C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs there appear items (files, shortcuts, whatever) of the same name. What's going on here?

Thanks,

Subject says it. Just setting up new pc for my wife. Came with XP Home preinstalled but the start menu was the classic. Switched it to the XP start menu (which I've grown to like better) and My Computer, My Network Places and Internet Explorer icons were removed from the desktop. Only recycle bin remained. Switching back to classic puts them back again. Oddly enough, when I was saving a dowload to the desktop (while set up as XP) the My Computer, My Network Places showed in the save to box when pointing at the desktop.

I have no idea what is going on with my system.
I try to install a program and get an error message saying that it is unable to write to C:\Users\[MYNAME]\AppData\Local\Temp
So I open Windows Explorer and check the attributes for that address and all is OK but every time I click on the Application Data folder it seems to replicate itself over and over.
One error says that there is not enough space when I have over 65Gb free on that drive.
Any ideas?

A:Like the universe, my AppData Folder keeps expanding & expanding

The Application Data folder under AppData is a Junction point, which is just a pointer to AppData. So when you click on Application Data you are actually expanding AppData, so you are in a never ending circle.

Confusing for sure. From what I understand, this was done to support compatibility with older software that expects an Application Data folder to be available.

Here are two very good articles on Junctions as used in Vista and Windows 7.

I see they took out the old registry fix to get the Windows 7 start menu back.

Any other way to do this in Windows 8?

A:Solved: Windows 7 Start Menu

Install "Classic"

http://classicshell.sourceforge.net/

It is very customisable, has the old start globe as an option, and also has an option to take you through to the legacy desktop.

But I would recommend you persist a little longer with the "Metr" start menu. When you get used to it, and rearrange everything to your preference, it is not too bad. The appearance could be more appealing, but, hopefully, a third party app, or MS themselves, may provide some options to customise it eventually.

I think developers should start thinking of some start menu replacements, they can use existing methods or something new which is easy to use, easy to customize and useful for beginners or advanced users. Some ideas:

a) Exact replacement of Start menu
b) Use Favourites or a Libraries of program shortcuts.
c) Use icons based on general function rather than program name e.g. Pictures, Videos, Documents
d) Use pop up menus like on X-Windows
e) Use a Dock like on Mac OS
f) Use sliding menus like on the iPod or iPhone
g) Program launcher like Windows 3.x (but better)
h) Mini icons on Metro instead of those huge icons provided on Windows 8

etc. Any one else got any good ideas?

Hi,

On the aftermath of having the oneclicksearches virus repaired, I noticed two icons in my startup that may have been there prior to the infection, a stop-sign icon called computer security and an envelpe icon called spam filter - both are links to pageforyou.net website which is some security software search engine with goofy weight loss and dating ads - Is this a normal part of my OS? (Windows 2000).

Plus a minor problem - when I launch Internet explorer, it can't load my default web site - I have to close the application, and it works after one or two tries.

Cheers,

I've always used the classic start menu but I've never had that bar that runs along the left side of it that says Window XP Professional and I know I've never used the 'small icon' feature either. My computer has always been set up by family members, and they don't remember how they removed it anymore. I recently formatted and reinstalled my OS and I've gotten everything to work correctly except that annoying side bar. It doesn't effect my system performance it's just a personal annoyance. I've provided a picture of what's on my start menu and what my start menu used to look like. There is probably a solution already up for this but when I google I appear to be using the wrong words to find the answer I want. Everyone just says to switch to small icons, which I hate. Even if it's a tweak or registry edit I am willing to try it. Please help me.

Right-click an unused part of the desktop => properties => settings => advanced => locate the tab that corresponds to your video adapter and you'll find controls to adjust the position of the display. If it's a desktop computer there are also buttons on the monitor to do that.

Hi Guys,
I am having a problem with my start menu program. First of all it will not reset to Normal mode. It stays set on selective start up.
When I open the start tab, it has a check in every box. I delete the ones that do not need to start up on every boot up and when I press the apply button. I get an error message: "An access denied error was returned to change a service. You may need to log on using an Administrator Account to make specific changes".
I am the only person that uses this PC, how do I fix this problem? I am running Win XP, SP 3. I seem to get this error as an Administrator too.
Any ideas as to the problem here?
Thanks in advance,
Bob E

Using 98 on a desktop I used to be able to right click the start button, choose explore and have a list of folders that were on the start menu, I could then make a new folder, name it Spyware then put all the spyware progs in so that my menu when I opened it was short. All photo stuff could go in one folder, spyware in another and so on.

With XP I don't seem to be able to do that, so my menu fills half the screen now.

All I get now is a folder that's named programmes and when I open that all that's there is shown in the screen shot posted here.

Anyone know how to do this, I dont want to mess things up bytrial and error.

Thanks

I had some problems with Norton (yea big surprise) so I gave up and called their tech support (yea big mistake) and they uninstalled and reinstalled their product and they say thats all they did. Now the left pane of My start menu is completely empty. The recently used program list and the recent file list is empty and will not repopulate and the IE and outlook links are gone. So of course i go to the properties menu and change the apropriate settings but it will not save when i close it I hit OK and apply but then I open the properties again and it is set back to the original "wrong" settings. Any Ideas?

My dad pitched me this question to pose to the board membership.

He's running Windows XP on the desktop computer, and he's got quite an extensive collection of programs after a good number of years now. The problem is that when he accesses the Start Menu and selects All Programs, the column menus now extend to three columns. The difficulty is that the far right most column is not completely visible on the screen now.

Given my dad's fairly advanced age (80+), I'm afraid that modifying the screen resolution setting is really not an option. Exclusive of some well-intentioned suggestion to pare down the number of programs on the All Programs menus (that's not going to happen), are there any other suggestions or fixes circulating that would somehow reorient the All Programs columns when they pulldown? And selecting the option to only display recent programs on the All Programs menu is also probably not an option.

The default white space you have at present will eventully become populated with programs that have been recently opened (unless you have disabled that feature). Helping a neighbor clean and update her HP Pavilion running W-XP sp3. Always with my own XP machine, I was able to delete any Program entry that a regular Remove from the Control Panel happened to leave behind.

Not with this machine. I can highlight an entry, but the mouse will not allow a right-click. I have gone into 'Start Menu' under the User and deleted whatever I could. But the "dead" entries are not shown in Windows Explorer, only on the Start Menu on the desktop.

There is only one live User Account on the machine, and hers has Admin privileges. I have also gone through the Explorer to look at the Start Menu folders under All Users and Default User -- without finding anything.

I don't know where else to look for the entries I want to delete, or how else to deal with them directly in the Desktop Start Menu.

Would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks. Dean

Hi fellas!

I recently got a new netbook from my university. It's a Dell Latitude 2120, just for the record.

I've had a lot of problems with it in this past two months or so(touchpad always freezes at some point etc. but mostly software related). My main problem, however, is that I can't pin any programs onto taskbar or the start menu. For example, I have Firefox open now, I can see the icon on the taskbar, but when I right click the icon and click 'pin to taskbar', it does nothing, the context menu won't even go away, just like I haven't even pressed it(weird, right?).

And to my next problem: I have the exactly same thing in taskbar. The Windows menu has no items on it. It only has that sidebar and 'all programs' button. This is really weird.

I have done a few security scans and I have F-Secure 'Pro', so I doubt it's caused by a malware.

So yeah.. All help's appreciated! Cheers.

Can't CTR ALT DEL, won't do nothing, all you can do is switch machine off and back on using the power switch which results in ILLEGAL SHUTDOWN msg when you swicth it back on.

Hi,

I have XP Home Edition, no SP2, and all was fine until yesterday after a major storm that killed power - perhaps damaged PC?
At any rate, I can boot up okay, and the desktop toolbar and the quick launch toolbar buttons work, but none of my office toolbar shortcuts nor the shortcuts in the start button menu seem to want to work - sometimes they depress and the machine freezes and sometimes they wont even appear to click (expecially the start button links).
I can obviously work around most things by searching the PC via the desktop toolbar, but I really want to have things how they were
Any suggestions will be very gratefully received!

this is my drama and dihlema ! ! !

last week i ghosted 15 windows xp machines. i used 2 user accounts from two different OUs(managers and users), to test and see if everything is working fine(start menus, map drives, printers bla bla bla and so on) and there was no problem at all ! !

a manager brought to my attention, that she could access the "all programs" in the start menu, i therefore re-tested all the machines with the user accounts again and realised that the users can access everything with no problem at all but the managers could not access the all programs folder.

my assumption was "restrictions", that could be placed in group policy but i did not touch group policy because there was no reason to touch it. i did have a check and everthing seemed fine to me ! ! !

i created a new OU and transfered all the accounts to the new one but still the samething ! ! !

im speechless as too how this happened. if anyone has a solution, please help out a fellow tech ! ! ! !

Hi everyone,

I am new here so thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

My PC is quite old- but works really well normally. It is a HP running Windows XP.

My problem is that suddenly this morning the programs in my start menu disappeared with a few exceptions. By this I mean the short-cuts in 'All Programs' not just the recently used programs list. The programs still there are; Dropbox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Spotify, Outlook Express, Remote Assistance, some Accessories and Steam.

Whilst I have no idea what caused this I have done some things to try and fix it so far this morning- but with no luck.

This is what I tried:

1) AVG full scan
2) System Restores (2 points- 1 this morning and 1 from Wednesday)
3) Installed, updated and ran Malwarebytes (which found and removed 7 threats- can post log if needed)
4) Installed, updated and ran SUPERAntiSpyware (which found and removed 233 threats (all cookies)- can post log if needed)
5) Several restarts of Windows throughout process.

My PC seems to be performing normally (maybe slightly slower- but that may just be my perception). However I would like to restore my programs without reinstalling them all individually if possible.

Is there anything anyone can recommend to do or something I have missed?

Thanks very much

Luke
