Win XP alternative to "System Configuration Utility?"

Q: Win XP alternative to "System Configuration Utility?"

Over the years, I've always used the "System Configuration Utility-> Start"
tab in Windows 98 to remove installed stuff I dont want to run at
start up etc.

I've noticed all these postings around here listing various info and
programs that start in Win XP, but I dont know how to go about it
myself. Anyone any hints/tip/websites for this XP newbie?

A: Win XP alternative to "System Configuration Utility?"

One of my favorites is X-Setup from www.xteq.com.

In my "services" tab in my "system configuration utility" (accessed via 'msconfig', I count about 75 entrees......all of them checked. Now, I know there a some of them that I need......for example: "AVG Update Service". But there are many (most, in fact) that I haven't a clue about what they do or if I really need them. For example: "Cryptographic Services". What in hell is that? What I'd like to do is disable all the stuff that I don't really need, so that I'm not wasting resources. Thanks for any help anybody can give. If you really come through, another donation will be on the way. But don't get the idea that this is a bribe.

Hi guys !!

The other day I opened my msconfig and in the Startup Items I saw a "Turok Registration"
This item was unchecked... but... The thing here is that I don't have anymore that game installed in my computer !!

That's why I called (ghost) "startup item"

I asked to the boyfriend of my roommate to uninstall that Game
So then later, I checked and it was uninstalled... but I still see that "Turok Registration" is in my Startup Items

I try to search in the path of "Command" so i can delete that entry, but i don't find any of those files it says in there, following that path...so how can I delete that entry form my Start up .

Notice that I want to "Delete" for complete that entry no just disable it , because I don't have that game in my computer.

Thansk very much for help and pls. forgive my ignorance at this and my English, not my first language.

Hi everyone, this morning I turned on the PC to do the usual stuff but I could not connect to my internet with the error "Unidentified Network - Limited". After trying to troubleshoot my ethernet I get the error "Ethernet doesn't have a valid IP configuration". After troubleshooting didn't work I took to the web. I literally tried every solution I found... to no avail. This brings me to extra frustration since I only built my PC last thursday.

How and where can I delete these items safely (Registry using REGEDIT) ??

A:How to change entries in the "System Configuration" window?

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

Start with Control Panel > Programs and Features.

Uninstall anything that you don't need, then let us know if things still show up on that Startup tab that you don't want.

I used this "hide a folder" program called "folder lock," and I guess it's buggy because it won't let me unhide the files. It unhides the folder containing the files, but the files are still hidden. They're still there, because when I copy and paste the folder, it shows that the files are being copied, but in the new folder they will be hidden again. Checking the "property" of the folder shows the correct size as well. How can I get windows to reveal them?

The hidden files are listed in this folder called "n|+|-n" or something like that I think, but when I type that in dos or windows it won't let me access them.

PS I contacted the company, but I don't expect a response back any time soon and those files are kind of important.

Thanks!

A:How to "unhide" a folder hidden by a "hidefolder" utility?

Welcome to TSG....

And of course you did not or don't have any backups of these files on any other media?

Actually the only way to gain access to these files is by contacting the manufacturer of the security program ir you would have to learn how to program good enough to bew able to get into the secure area. To the best of my knowledge since this is a security thing and we have no way of knowing whether or not you actually have the rights to get into these files I doubt if you will get much direction toward solving your problem.

Go with contacting the manufacturer of the software.

Hi.

I accidentally pulled the plug out of my computer when it was in the middle of shutting down. Now that I've tried to reboot it, I get a screen saying:

Safe Mode
Safe Mode With Networking
Safe Mode With Command Prompt
Last Known Good Configuration
Start Windows Normally

Whenever I click on any of the options above, I always ends up back at the same screen, suggest the above options again. I've tried rebooting I again a few times but nothing works?

Any ideas?
Thanks.

As the above title describes ""Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration"

I've tried every possible fix. CMD -> ipconfig /release - ipconfig /renew - reboot computer, nothing happens.

On the Network Sharing Center - I get my Network shown as "Unidentified Network."

I tried Uninstalling and Re-Installing the NIC, no luck. Updating the Driver didn't help either as it says it's up-to-date.

I've tried manually assigning the IP address, but I don't think I did it correctly, as I am quite new with Networking problems and especially with all the IP addresses', DNS, DHCP. etc. So I need support with that and try it out whether that fix will work, although I doubt at this point since I tried everything.

I tried disabling the IPv6 as well that did nothing too.

I also RESET my router, which also had no affect. I am using the VIRGINMEDIA SUPER HUB ROUTER. It's a Fibre Optic Connection.

I also called my ISP, they suggested the Internet is all stable and has no connection problems. The Technician I spoke to over the phone said that there is something at fault with my computer itself and not the Router or Internet connection. In other words, my NIC.

My wireless connection works without any issues, but when I plug-in my Ethernet Cable on the back of my Computer (Motherboard) it does not detect any Internet Access and I get the " Unidentified Network." When I troubleshoot it gives me that error whic... Read more

Lets take a peek at your network environment:

First:

Power Cycle everything . . Turn off the Modem, router and all pc's . . turn on the Modem and wait a few minutes for the lights to stabilize . . then turn on the router, then one pc at a time. See if you connect to the internet.

Then:

Then: check your browser's settings, remove any proxy settings if found here's how.

Then:

with the pc connected to the router, Click on Start . . Run . . type CMD

At the > prompt type type the following command: IPCONFIG /ALL

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter. Come back here and Paste the results in a message.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB drive, or a CD-R disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

A:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

A:NO DESKTOP after booting up & SYSTEM RESTORE "Incomplete" & "Strange" Temp Files

Usually when the machine has a "blank" desktop, the boot/startup process has been interupted or is frozen to before Explorer is launched.

You can launch Explorer manually be navigating C:\Windows and double-clicking "Explorer".

If successful, do the following:

Start>Run>(type) "msconfig" and turn off all non-MS services and all startups.

Then, Start>Run>(type) "cmd", and at the command prompt type "chkdsk /f" and schedule a chkdsk to run on next reboot.

Reboot system and report results.

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

Also, the properties window correctly shows the duration also:

First off, thank you for any assistance in advance.

Problem: "System Alert" balloon in tray icon that will not go away and redirects me in IE 7 to hxxp://www.virprotect.com/?aff=1012.

Using SpyBot Search & Destroy and Ad-Aware SE, I seem to have gotten rid of the problem of the redirection of my home page as well as removed the trojan that caused all of this in the first place (I think). Download SDFix from here and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
Restart your computer

After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
Choose your usual account.

In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract All,
Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
Type Y to begin the script.

It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
Press any Key and it will restart the PC.

Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool will be running and removing files.
When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.

Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).

Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.

It may still be showing if the system image was created as part of a Windows backup. Using the tutorial below to reset Windows Backup should clear it for you, but you will need to set up your backup again afterwards.

Hello M4TE and welcome to Seven Forums. Sorry for the delay in responding but I just came across your question.

Most newer manufactured computers have a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. The manufacturer provides specific instructions on how to access that partition in case you want to restore your machine to the exact condition it was in when it left the factory. That means you'd have to go through the time consuming process of cleaning out factory bloatware (like free trials of programs you'll never need), installing programs you do need, updating everything, creating your personal settings, etc. Here is a general idea of how to access the hidden recovery partition.

HP Recovery From Partition

Let's say it took you a day or two to set up your machine to your liking using the hidden recovery partition. A System Image is like a snapshot of your entire hard drive. It will include everything from the operating system to all your programs, files, photos, music, all updates ... everything. Most folks keep it on a separate external hard drive. Let's say a week later you get a virus or your machine crashes for some reason. You can use that System Image to return your machine to the exact condition it was in when you made the image. Usually takes about 30 minutes or so and you're back in business. It's a lot faster and more convenient to only worry about a week of updates compared to probably months with the hidden recovery partition. The newer a System Image is the... Read more

"In Private" browsing might be better than nothing, but it has no memory. I am wondering if a viable alternative might be to create a User just for private browsing and encrypt that directory in C:/Users/user? Would that let me have "favorites" that were private? And would that allow sessions to restart after a crash?

Thanks, Bob

A:Encrypt C:/Users/username as an alternative to "In Private" Browsing

Not sure if I would encrypt the entire /user folder. you would need to unencrypt before doing anything else at that point.

"In Private" just means that no cookies/images/etc. are being stored permenantly on your computer. they are still saved temporarily, accessible, and recoverable and not encrypted...
What is InPrivate Browsing?

you could alternatively go with a standalone browser that runs from a USB Drive instead if this is that much of a concern and have the drive encrypted with truecrypt or something similar TrueCrypt - Free Open-Source On-The-Fly Disk Encryption Software for Windows 7/Vista/XP, Mac OS X and Linux

What is a portable app? | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives

Mozilla Firefox, Portable Edition | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB, portable and cloud drives

I have not done this though, so maybe someone with actual first-hand knowledge can give their advice, but this is what I would think is the most secure.

E1705/9400 laptop with the T7400 Core 2 Duo processor running at 2.16
GHZ.   It has 2 GB of RAM and a brand new 500GB Hitachi Travelstar hard
drive (7200 RPM).   It also has the GeForce Go 7900 GS video card.
It previously had Windows XP Professional (32 bit) and worked fine.
But, I have three computers in my home and home office and would like
them all to work better together on my wired home network, so I am
upgrading all three to Windows 7.   My two desktops (one is Dimension
XPS 420 and the other is Dimension XPS 430) seem like they will be no
problem to upgrade to Windows 7.   But, this laptop was not listed on
Dell's Windows 7 Compatibility List.   However, the Windows 7 Upgrade
Advisor that I downloaded and ran seemed to say that it was OK to do a
clean install of 32 bit Windows 7 and it only had a few minor concerns,
where it said to check for updated drivers from the manufacturer.   The
laptop originally came with a 100GB hard drive.   For my use, that is
getting very small, so I decided to get the same exact 7200 RPM drive
in the 500 GB size.   This will allow me to do a clean install of the
32 bit Windows 7 OS on the new hard drive and not have to wipe the old
drive to do it.   I can just hold onto the old HD and stick it back in
whenever I might ... Read more

The TeraCopy developers seems not to be very active actually.

Do you know an alternative to copy files as fast as possible with a special option copy/move "only bigger files"?

Not sure about 'Only Bigger Files' but have you tried looking at RoboCopy (Built into Windows 7)

I'm wondering if anyone can give me a suggestion on a standalone software that does what IE10 used to do with the developer tool "View image report".

That was a useful tool for me to find out the info on all pictures from our websites, but I noticed it is missing in IE11 now.

Hi all,

Ive got to do some statistical analasis for work, I need to search 2 columns for 2 different types of data and collate.

For example search for "a system" in A:A & "a reason" in F:F which matches the critera fount in A:A

I have office 2007 at home which was fine because I just used the "=COUNTIFS" formula and it worked fine, but I then saved to 97 format because thats what they use in work and the "=COUNTIFS" formula is not back compatible.

Is there any way I can do this with 97, any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are 2 devices in the "Device Manager" that do not have drivers installed.

I just did a clean install of Window 7 SP1 32-bit to a Dell Latitude E6500. I have uploaded all the Windows updates and all seems to be performing well. However, there are two devices in the "device manager" that do not have drivers installed, and I can't determine what the devices are nor how/where to find the drivers for them online or elsewhere. The driverless devices are "Base System Device" and "Broadcom USH". When I look at the properties page of both devices, it says that the Base System Devices location is "PCI bus 3, device 1, function 3", and the Boradcom USH's location as "0000.001a.0002.001.000.000.000.000.000".

The laptop did NOT come with a drivers installation disk.

QUESTION: How can I identify what these devices actually are and, more importantly, how can I obtain the driver for them?

A:Can't ID driverless devices "Base System Device" and "Broadcom USH"

Well, as for the second part of your question......... have you tried using windows own driver update utility? Right click on the yellow exclamation point in Device Manager, choose update.

I'm thinking your "boradcom ush" is this, drivers for it are here too, :Broadcom USH - USB\VID_0A5C&PID_5800 - awdit - The driver, software, & hardware database

Hello All,

I started a few weeks ago on the PowerShell programing and I got my answer from here only. So am putting up the error that I am getting now to get some help again.

Scenario : I wrote a script that checks a Folder on a server and counts the number of files in it.Then when it finds the resulting number to be more then a specific value(threshold) it sends up a mail to the required alias. To break it all along the portion to send a mail is generated through DBmail using another .PS1 file.

In the PS1 file containing the main checking of number of files I am trying to pass 2 parameters :

1. Folder path on the server
2. the Threshold value of number of files

Now when I created a job to run this powershell script as :

& "C:\PowerShell\Power.PS1" \\XXXX\\c$\Documents and Settings\ABC\Local Settings\Temp 10

IT fails with the error :

A job step received an error at line 1 in a PowerShell script. The corresponding line is '& "C:\PowerShell\Power.ps1" \\XXXX\\c$\Documents and Settings\ABC\Local Settings\Temp 10'. Correct the script and reschedule the job. The error information returned by PowerShell is: 'Cannot convert value "and" to type "System.Int32". Error: "Input string was not in a correct format." '. Process Exit Code -1. The step failed.

I really can not move forward on this.

Please help.

How to make drives "X" and "Y" boot-able?

In "Disk Management", I've noticed these partition labels missing:"X" (or "System Reserved") is missing System label,
"Y" (or "OS") is missing Boot, Page File and Crash Dump labels

Perhaps if you save to a FAT32 formatted partition.

I have an old Dell Latitude C610 Laptop, Pentium III, that I got from a friend who's son got some wicked virus on it and the computer was pretty much useless. It would boot and load windows but once it finished loading, it would freeze, wouldn't let me run a virus scan, nothing.

To make a long story short, I used a utility on my 'Ultimate Boot CD" to wipe the drive clean. Oh, my friend didn't have the restore disk either. Now I get this message "No boot sector on hard disk - No bootable devices - strike F1 to retry boot, F2 for setup utility" I have a Windows XP disk that I tried using to reinstall the OS but kept getting the same message. I set the bios so the CD Rom would boot first, did no good. My UBCD boots just fine so, it is not a bad HD. The laptop doesn't have a floppy drive either so, I can't make boot floppies.

Hi

did you buy any chance remove the drive from the laptop at all... ?

the c610 has a little blade adaptor that changes the standard IDE pins into a flat set of pins, they sometimes dont sit right or the drive isnt snugly in the drive bay....

take it out and reinsert it,,on boot up go into the BIOS (F2 at boot) and check the drive shows, if it doesnt then the drive has died and needs to be replaced.

Hi,

I get this blue screen and my laptop reboots. This occurs very frequently at times and at times the laptop runs smoothly and all of a sudden reboots.

I get this error message "IEEE802.11b WLAN Card Utility has encountered a problem and needs to close".

It started occurring ever since i have replaced the LINKSYS WAG54G router with a new version.

I have contacted Linksys several times but they just dont have a solution to this problem. They even got me to download new drivers for the router.

The funny thing is whenever i use a different router or a wired router this problem does not occur.

Linksys has suggested i update my wireless drivers by downloading new drivers from the laptop manufacturers website. I am not too sure if i should be taking this route.

Would anyone know why this problem is occurring.

So here's my issue; have I've found that everytime I have allowed windows update to install anything that has had to do with security, following the updates I have always run into the BSOD resulting in restoring my computer to an earlier date. Well this time, things are a bit different.

Whenever my computer has seemed to start to choke up, and really begins to lag, from things as simple as maximizing a minimized window, and it taking about 20 seconds for it to do so, the BSOD is coming. Heres an example of one:
Ill be honest with you guys, I dont know how to interpret what the cause of it is, nor do I know where people find it,(event viewer logs?) but surprisingly I've worked on computers all my life really.
So heres the issue:

Using a laptop [Dell, using WinXP Pro] at both the office and then when traveling, I have some files and folders in my C drive that I sometimes save there, and then also save onto my server drive [G], and vice-versa.

Is there a utility that can "mirror" or "synchronize" the files and sub-folders w/in designated folders of my choosing so that both sets [the C and the G drives] are both updated and then reflect the same files, etc.?

Yea, there is a Synchronize w/in the Tools of Windows Explorer, but that seems to be for a totally different purpose... What I would like is to do the above task w/ like a one or two button click, that would then take care of doing its function in the background.

Any ideas?

Hello Guys and Gals.
I need to be able to read through SMTP logs and apply a filter to make tracing problems easier. At the moment I use Firefox's Find and Highlight features which work but mean scrolling a plenty as these logs can be several MB (doesn't sound a lot but they're plain text so they are HUUUGE!!!).

I'd like to be able to download the log, enter a filter as I can in Tail and it only show matching line. Finding software to do that is proving difficult and we're not willing to spend any money on it (after all, it might take longer to do manually, but no point spending ??? on it).

Tail would be good but the files seem to be too big and it only shows the tail of the file (no good). Sorry for babbling on, I hope that someone can come forward with some recommendations. Thank you.

My office just upgraded, and I can no longer use Windows XP. On this system, I was able to add a separate taskbar to facilitate quick access to commonly-browsed folder locations on our vast network, and another one expedited the launching of useful programs and lists. Each task on each taskbar was represented with a big custom icon to save eye strain. I had them installed in opposite vertical margins, and they were set on auto-hide to keep them out of the way when not being used. Just move your mouse pointer to the left or right margin, and BAM! Sorry for the cliche, but I really got used to the convenience of what I had set up, and I just don't think I can be as efficient without anything comparable.

Now there appears to be nothing comparable in the Windows 7 GUI, and it's making me sick with rage! I see only the option to put a "toolbar" on an existing "taskbar", and no option to create any additional taskbars! This cramps up your one-and-only taskbar, plus the tiny toolbar access buttons require way too much precision for anything that's supposed to be quick. When you've figured out how to bring up that ridiculous button, the list that it yields is small enough to cause painful eyestrain - nothing efficient, much less cool about this at all! I have seen customization options in other OS GUIs that may have resolved some of these issues, but I see none such in W7.

I have tried every google search string that I can think of, and found... Read more

So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?
Thanks!

About a week after setting up a wireless network in my home using a Linksys Wireless G Broadband Router, my laptop stopped recognizing my wireless antenna. The light and switch indicate that the radio is turned "on" but the computer says it is "off". I first tried to fix the problem with a wireless card, which was no help at all. My internet works fine if I'm plugged directly into the DSL box.

I first tried to fix the problem by downloading new drivers for my wireless and all that did was break my "connectivity doctor" program (no longer opens)

The error message details read:

I am a relative neophyte when it comes to personal computers.

Is it recommended to disable the startup item "GrooveMonitor Utility"?

And, if so, is it just a matter of changing its status in the Task Manager from "Enabled" to "Disabled"?

Many thanks.

Anyone know of a good free HD LED indicator utility for Vista? My system is on the floor and it would be cool if there's a Tray Indicator that simulates the HD LED flashes.

I could avoid a lot of leaning over.

Hello everybody. Here's my story. I have 2 HDDs:
1) 1TB with 2 partitions: System (where Windows 7 is installed) and Hard Disk (with programs)
2) 500GB with 1 partition: Storage (with all the unnecessary files I don't want to delete)

My problem is that the last partition became Active and System. It happened like that. I had some troubles with SATA cable so I had to disconnect my main HDD and connect DVD-Drive with that same cable and my main HDD with the one I used for DVD-Drive. What I didn't notive at first was that the 500GB hard disk became the first one in the boot row. After some time I noticed that Storage became my Active and System partition. I tried making the partition with Windows Active and making that one Inactive but I couldn't load the system after that, I had BOOTMGR is missing error, so I had to swich back with Paragon software. Any ideas how can I make my original System partition to be active and system and that useless partition to become simple data storage once again?

A:Partition is "Active" and "System" though it shouldn't be

Plug 1tb into first SATA port, mark it Active using Diskpart from Win7 DVD Repair Conosle or Repair CD, or use free Partition Wizard bootable CD. Then mark Inactive 500gb plugged into Disk1.
DISKPART At PC Startup
Partition - Mark as Active (Method Two)

Set 1tb on DISK0 as first HD to boot in BIOS setup, after DVD/CD drive.

Boot the Win7 DVD Repair console or Repair CD to Startup Repair - Run 3 Separate Times until Win7 starts on its own and is correctly marked System Active. You may have to unplug the 500mb HD if it interferes.

Newbie here. I have searched around for a while but have not found a post with my exact situation.

I just installed a new Seagate Momentus 500gb (7200rpm) SATA drive in my Lenovo X61 laptop and have been working on a installation of Windows7 Ultimate.

Not realizing this was an upgrade install disk, I tried to install Win7. I didn't know about the clean install method, so I started over with an installation of WinXP (slipstreamed to deal with the SATA drive).

Next, I ran the Custom Installation upgrade to Win7.

So far, it seems to be working ok.

However, the Local Drive is D: instead of C:. The System Reserved drive in labeled C:. Should I be concerned? Should/Can I change this?

Attached are screenshots of Disk Management and explorer window.

Thank you for any info.
-Nate

A:"System Reserved (C:)" and "Local Disk (D:)" ??

Try removing the System Reserved drive letter in Disk Management to see if Win7 claims C instead. It sometimes works.

There is no reason you can't operate with Win7 as D even though it is meant to always assume the C letter unless it's installer is run from another OS.

But if you do I would not allow a drive letter for SysReserved as programs can write to and corrupt it, especially the ability to make Win7 backup images.

Now that you know you can clean install Win7 without needing XP on the HD, I would strongly consider booting the installer to do a Custom install, choose Drive Options to Delete all partitions, Create new as you wish, then Format before installing to first partition after SysReserved it will create for you. The installer will see an OS at boot to allow use of Upgrade version key upfront during install.

Same thing. AVG Free can't update. Today I got a message "attention...trojan spm/lx...etc." with a prompt for a web page, but instead I closed the window from the top right corner. Today I also got a background on my desktop that said "your system is infected, system has been stopped due to a serious malfunction".

I started through some of the threads on this site, and was looking at a promising thread (855938-trojan-spm-lx-infection..) that cybertech posted and instructing kramer8886 to run malwarebytes. I installed malwarebytes and it opens but self closes in a matter of seconds (regardless if I hit quick scan or not).

Some additional symptoms:
1. Can't open computer in Safe Mode
2. Can't use "run" from start menu
3. Can't use volume on computer
4. Malware is redirecting my url choice to its own choices

Hi all,

I've just moved into a new house, and I'm trying to connect to the cat5 ethernet network. The router is fine, I can connect to wifi, but when I try to connect my computer to the hardwire it labels it as an "Unidentified public network" and can't connect.

When I run the Windows Network Diagnostic it says "Local Area Connection does not have a valid ip configuration."

I've rebooted my computer and the router several times.

I've also done some research into similar cases, and have tried the ipconfig /release and /renew commands in command prompt to no success.

If you need the print from the ipconfig command in command prompt, here it is:

Hello,

I need help with configuring Microsoft Loopback Adapter on my Windows 7 Professionl 32-bit laptop. The Device Manager for the adapter says, "This device is working properly". Relevant screenshots are as follows:

IPv4 Properties>>Advanced>>WINS
I disabled NetBIOS over TCP/IP <--------- Not sure if this was required.

There is no antivirus installed and the windows firewall is turned off. Local Area Connection 2 is set to be accessed first by Network Services. I've tried the following with no luck:
1) Uninstall and reinstall the loopback adapter
2) Disable every other adapter and try to connect loopback adapter
3) Change the IP address to something like 192.168.2.5

When I try to install and configure loopback adapter on Windows Vista Home on the same machine on a separate partition, at least I get "Limited Connectivity".

I am not experienced with loopback adapter so I don't even know how to verify whether I am doing things right or I am getting the results right. I believe my settings are correct, then why is it saying, "No Network Access"? Please help me out here. Thank you!

Hi. So I came back to my desktop after a weekend away, and all of a sudden my wired network has changed to "Unidentified Network" with no network access. I have never had a single problem with this before and I've tried several fixes that do not do a thing. I live in a dorm and am plugged directly into the wall. I also use a switch to use an Xbox One. I have tried plugging the PC directly into the wall instead of the switch to no avail. I've also turned everything off multiple times. Here is my ipconfig information
I'm not sure if this matters, but I feel I should mention that both my IPv4 and IPv6 Connectivity display "No network access"

So here is my story.
For the last few months my desktop was working fine. Today morning by mistake i switched electricity off during my desktop shutdown. Later then i started my computer I saw many services like DHCP client, Windows firewall, base filtering engine and some others doesn't start with error code ACCESS DENIED.
After reading few articles and microsoft recomendations I found the reason of this error. I added permission into the registry to these services for SERVICE AND NETWORK SERVICE users. After that all services begin work fine.

But I still cannot connect to the internet. After running troubleshooting i receive and error message.
"Local area connection 2" doesn't have a valid ip configuration.

It looks like something happened with registry setting or permission which doesn't allow to work network services in proper way.

May I have some help please.

Hi everyone I've run into a problem that I really don't understand and I was hoping somebody here could help me.

First a little background so you can understand the situation. My set up is that I live in a two story house and have my cable modem and a D-Link ethernet switch in my den on the ground floor. I connect to the internet via this switch, and the switch also leads upstairs to the bedrooms, where we have a D-Link wireless router. This wireless router then provides internet to all of the bedrooms (with their laptops and Ipads) upstairs, my Xbox and another computer. My computer downstairs has no wireless card so I have to access the net via a wired connection with this one.

Now everything was fine and all my devices, whether wired or wireless had access to the internet until one day, my computer in the den could NOT access the internet. I've tried all the suggestions I've seen on forums and nothing would work. I even tried moving my den computer upstairs and plugged it into the router, and it would work! I tried moving multiple laptops downstairs as well to see if it was just the computer and they also were not be able to access the internet via wired connection through the switch.
What WOULD work sometimes is if I restarted and reset the cable modem, then sometimes my downstairs internet would work. However, if the downstairs computer's internet would work, then the devices who rely on the wireless router to connect to the internet would then be unable to do so. ... Read more

A:Mind boggling network problem -"Doesn't have a valid IP configuration"

Hello,

The problem is that your PC in the den isnt obtaining an IP address from the DHCP server which will be on the router.

Hey ho everyone. I have a common problem that I have seen a lot of people have. I'm posting on here because I don't really know a lot about networks, but here's my story. My dad has a computer with Windows XP on it, but it is running very slow and needs to be replaced. The computer is wired to a ATT modem that has a router (both wired and wireless) in it. The internet does work with a ethernet cable plugged in on the WinXP OS, however I will mention. So he bought a new hard drive and a new version of Windows 7. He unplugged the XP hard drive and only had the new (Win 7) drive plugged in. I ran the instillation process with the cable still plugged in, never changed a thing. Once Win7 was finalized, no ethernet internet connection. We run a diagnostics and I get the error message posted in the subject. We have switched back to the WinXP hard drive and the internet is working just fine. We also formatted the Win7 hard drive and ran a new install and got the same result. Here is a little bit about my system.

OS Version: Windows 7 Service Pack 1
Processor: Intel Core 2 1.87GH
RAM: 6GB
Graphics Card: Nvidia Gforce 9600 GT
Hard Drive: 1TB Western Digital
Motherboard: ASUS P5NSLI
Antivirus: None

Now I did a lot of researching last night and found a lot of posted processes. None of them worked, but a few of them gave me odd responses. I am going to copy and paste some of the processes that I have read from here.

I just got my internet hooked up in my new apartment yesterday, and it is not working when plugged directly into my laptop. It worked fine on the installer's laptop, though.
A buddy of mine let me borrow his wireless router and the wireless works fine with that, although if I try to connect wired through it, that does not work either.

It says I'm connected to an unidentified public network and I get the above error when I try to connect. I've tried disabling IPv6, restarting both the modem and my laptop, and updating the ethernet driver, which I could not find (HP dv2715nr is my model and I have windows 7 ultimate).

Below is my ipconfig with the modem plugged in and the wireless turned off. Hope this is enough info and thanks for any help!

So I recently recovered my computer from corrupt display drivers by booting into safe mode and uninstalling the bad drivers. So Windows is working good as ever except the fact that I have no official drivers installed. So I downloaded the latest drivers from the Intel website and when I try to install the drivers from Device Manager it gives me an error saying the "configuration registry database" is corrupt. I tried running the installer from safe mode and even tried older drivers to no avail. I also backed up my registry and ran Ccleaner on it. Is there anything else I can do? I sadly don't have any restore points for it. Thanks in advance.

My internet connection was working just fine until a few days ago. When I turned my computer on (Win7 Pro), there was that little yellow warning sign in the corner, and I haven't been able to use the internet on that computer since. The rest of the computers

"Local Area Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration.  The final error message we got was "This

computer can't connect to a homegroup."  We also have seen "Windows cannot set up a homegroup on this computer."

I am wondering if the valid IP configuration actually comes from our Internet connection which isn't working."

If this isn't the problem, is there anything else we could try?
Our local network connects to the Internet directly to Verizon FIOS
Our switches (there are two connected to each other) seem to be working.

I'm running into an issue which is hindering the enjoyment I am getting out of my system. Quite frequently I am getting these issues where I lose connection to the internet at random times. I then "Trouble Shoot" problems with the connection and I get the fixed issue of: "Local Area Connection Doesn't have a valid IP configuration."

I've looked in several other posts, and nothing has quite worked out for me thus far. I have general medium level of understanding relating to computers. Hope to hear an answer soon.

Thanks in advanced.

A:"Local Area Connection" Doesn't have a valid IP configuration.

Can you post a screenshot of your ipconfig /all output?

Or try this:

Copy and paste these lines in Note pad.

@Echo on
pushd\windows\system32\drivers\etc
attrib -h -s -r hosts
echo 127.0.0.1 localhost>HOSTS
attrib +r +h +s hosts
popd
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset all
netsh int ip reset all
shutdown -r -t 1
del %0

Save as flush.bat to your desktop. Right click on the flush.bat file to run it as Administrator.

Your computer will reboot itself.

A:"Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration

i have moved to networking - can we see a device manager and ipconfig /all
what security suite - firewall is on the system , often they come with a timetrail version of norton, mcafee etc

also try safemode with networking

see below
------------------------------------------------------------------------
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post results here

We would like to see the results from ipconfig /all post back the results in a reply here

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results to notepad and then automatically open notepad.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results to a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all
all the text will be highlighted
Next
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Copy
Now go back to the forum - reply and then right click in the reply box and paste

I have a laptop running Vista. Using an ethernet connection to our office network, normal internet connectivity works perfectly. Then I connect to a VPN, and I am able to access resources there as expected. When I disconnect from the VPN, the status of the local area network is "local only", and the internet is inaccessible. If I view the status of the local area connection and click "Diagnose", I get a message that the connection does not have a "valid IP configuration". Choosing to automatically fix it takes a few seconds and then full connectivity is restored.

Can anyone tell me how to fix this so these extra steps aren't required every time I disconnect from a VPN?

A:Network connection doesn't have "valid IP configuration" after disconnecting from VPN

This is probably an issue with the VPN client. Normally, when you disconnect from the VPN connection, normal networking will return.

I keep getting this error: "Wireless Connection doesnt have a valid IP Configuration" and there is a little yellow triangle on the WIFI connection I am trying to connect to. This connection is my next door neighbors and I have FULL PERMISSION to be using it, so no issues there. My problem is that now it is not letting me connect to it. Another error I saw was something about conflicting IP's.

What can I do to fix this? My neighbor lets me use his wifi for school because Im a virtual school student overseas and I have a lot of homework online and am in need of high speed internet. I am behind on several on my assignments and there's only 2 weeks of school left. Please help me connect to the wifi, it would mean so much to me.

I am currently trying to download ubuntu because I know I wont have this issue on there but my current internet speed is SO SLOW its saying I need a whole day to download it and that's too long.

I have windows 7 home premium

Thank you

A:HELP: Error "Wireless Connection doesnt have a valid IP Configuration"

First things first, did your neighbor change anything with his configuration? If so, what changed?

Please follow this guide and report back:

Hay folks, have a question for you??????

The computer does excess the IP but will not carry thought so I can get website infor, so to check out EM. It will sign off before it gets Loaded, fully.
Now this here sys is at bear bones but it was running prior to modem going South for the border,( North Carolina South of the boader That is).

GOD BLESS YOUR MANY GREAT DAYS AHEAD, DirectCurrent

A:US Robotics Modem configuration setting problem "not set to dial-up"

Need to clean up some English along with that adware! I can barely tell what your problem is.

So you are in AL, and you bought a modem in your Walmart for someone in FL? Did you mail it to them or something?
What do you mean you set up your "IP" on her computer? You mean your "ISP" as in your provider?

Anyhoo, are you sure the driver is in properly from the CD? Check Device Manager.
And because it is a new modem, you may have to uninstall the ISP software and reload it for it to see the new modem properly.

Otherwise, could you clarify exactly what happened and what errors you get and what software you use, what version of Windows, and any other data you can share.

cheers

the laptop I am typing this from wi-fi works, I have a Gateway MX6920 that originally had Windows XP on it, I wiped that and installed Windows 7. and have very few installed programs on it. Openoffice, firefox, teamviewer, Gimp, and a steam game is all that's on it (and an Antivirus) but it will no longer connect to my wi-fi, it used to but now doesn't. I have 'limited access' and the troubleshooter says "Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. how do I fix?

A:"Wireless Network Connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration

So, are you saying when running XP the wi-fi and internet connection was working but has never worked the same under W7 ? Or.... it has worked since you changed to W7 but now for some reason it does not ?

Okay, so here is my problem. I frequently bring my laptop to work where the is a public wireless signal. I work at a hospital. There is a secure network but I don't have the password for it, so I use the public one. Up until recently I used an old asus with vista, and while the signal was pretty low I had no problem connecting to it and staying connected. Just meant slow internet for me. However, that computer has sadly died and I bought a samsung NP700Z5B-S01UB. And while it's a very nice machine, I cant seem to connect to the network here. It shows that there is a low wireless signal, but it still wont let me connect. The error it gives me is "wireless network connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration. Is there anything I can do with the computer to fix this problem, since I cannot do anything to the wireless network at all (as it is a network associated with the hospital). If anyone has any ideas please let me know.

A:"wireless network connection" doesn't have a valid IP configuration

Hello mystic, and welcome to Sevenforums!

First, do you have the latest driver installed for it? I don't know what version of windows you have so here is the general link to the drivers: Samsung - you will need the wireless driver(s). Uninstall your current wireless driver before installing the new one, which means you will need to download the new one first or use a LAN cable to have an internet connection to download the driver.

Here is an internet troubleshooting guide you might be able to use: Internet Troubleshooting Guide

However, it sounds like this computer works at home, just not at the hospitol, so it may be some kind of incompatability or any number of reasons. Make sure you have all windows updates installed as that can sometimes help such issues.
