Dell Computer Freeze

Q: Dell Computer Freeze

For the last few months our new (about 9 months old) dell computer running XP has begun to freeze up, theres no apparent pattern to it, but what we found is that if we right click and get the task manager, light up the program DAMon.exe, and click end process it does free it up every time.

We think the program DAMon.exe has something to do with Dells help system and did go to them and ask twice, we got two different solutions neither of which sounded right and we didnt do them. If its there program I assume we might consider eliminating it but are afraid to do that if it would result in their inability to assist in some other future problem.

I am a novice and have been a little leery about doing anything, what ever solution you might think of would have to be simple but if anyone could suggest a simple thing I would appreciate it.

if a program i run is freezing, the whole computer freezes to the point where i can't input anything except Alt-Control-Delete but if i chose "Task Manager" it does not open on the front, but i can see it on the taskbar, i can even see the vista sidebar ticking but i cannot contol anything that happens.

it only happens when a program enters an infinite loop (or becoming idle any other way)...
when i program, and my program freezes, i have to restart the computer (sometimes clicking log-off on the Alt-Control-Delete works, but sometimes it doesn't)
since i like to program, i can't restart the computer every time my program freezes, and it is a huge hassle to restart the pc every time my computer freezes

i already tried fixing the registry with tuneup registry scanner and i thought about system restore but it turns out i don't have any system restore points

Are you using a lot of resources? If you enable error reporting instead of a constant loop, it should give you an error message that you can post here

I tried to install Windows 10 on XPS 11 laptop. The installation required a restart. The laptop restarted itself and froze on the DELL logo. When I try accessing BIOS (with F2) or the boot menu (F12), the option highlights itself (as in being selected), but nothing happens whatsoever. I took the battery out, pressed the Power button for 10 secs, placed the battery back on, but again nothing happened. If someone could tell me how to fix this...

when using my daughters dell inspirion 10 inch recently as I search or am on a web page I

see it freezes after about 15minuets use . Also a couple of times I get a loud alarm it stays steady and loud until I shut it down.

I am running Chrome and firefox as Browsers and have just uninstalled Chrome thinking that
it may be using to much memory .

So anyone know what the issues is? Thanks as always

A:Dell 10 inch freeze

Usual cause in the ones we see is heat. Be sure you are not blocking air flow... lint, etc.
But also, we see a lot of power adapter plugs that are too loose or pull out slightly from vibration or use.

I use my Dell D820 primarily for home automation and it is always on. Every couple of weeks, it freezes. The screen is dark, no keys have any effect including cntrl alt del. The only way I can recover is to hold the power button down to shut down and then re-boot.

Windows 7 has been kept up-to date, the machine has only a few apps on it. It has a solid state 250MB HD and 4GB of memory. I have used both Malwarebytes and Super Anti-Spyware to try to keep it clean.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi barbara2351,
You may run the hardware diagnostics to check the hardware functionality.

Shut down and restart the computer.
Press the F12 key immediately when the Dell logo appears. The Boot Device list appears.
Select Diagnostics and press the Enter key.

If there are no issues found, update the system BIOS.
The link is
Note: Before updating BIOS please ensure that: *No external devices (flash drives, printers, external hard drives) should be connected. *All other programs should be closed and documents saved
Please share the operating system.
Keep me posted with the results. I will be glad to assist you further.

Over the past month I installed two brand new 500 GB Western Digital HDD. They worked fine for a while and everything worked great until I came home one day and I turned on my monitor and was receiving an error. "SATA 0: Not Found" or something along those lines. It has been happening often since then and I am also having problems booting from my primary HDD. After a while I received a "Alert: Previous Fan Failure" error and it seemed my fan was ****ed. I took off the side panel and turned on my CPU and everything was fine, my fan was running and everything. After that I got another HDD not found error and took the HDD's out and they seriously were too hot to touch and they heat up incredibly fast and now everytime I use my system after about 20 to 30 minutes it freezes and ****s up, it has never had this happen before and my fan is still working. Here are my specs:

Dell Optiplex GX620
2 Western Digital 500 GB HDD
512 MB RAM

Any help appreciated!
Sorry for the cursing if anyone is offended, kind of pissed at the moment.

Windows 7 Professional
Dell Vostro 3500 Laptop
(about 15 months old)

I'm trying to troubleshoot a Laptop for a friend who has limited computer knowledge.
But I'm stumped as well.

It seems that they've had a strange freeze occur twice in the last month
(about 3 weeks in between)
The last occurence was when they had left the laptop alone for a while and it was asleep or something. When they came back to it to try to wake it up, they would get a mostly black screen with the Text "Windows 7 Professional" at the bottom. We watched the computer restart/start up together to try to Identify at what point did it look like it had gotten stuck on, and the closest thing was the Login screen. That is, the log in screen without the User name login, lower left "ease of access" button, and the upper left keyboard button. Also no mouse cursor would show up.
As far as I've been told, the only thing on the screen is the Windows 7 text at the bottom (possibly the logo alongside it)
The only way they've managed to get out of this freeze is to hold down the power button for several seconds to force shut down the computer.

The computer acts normally after this.

The first time it seemed like a one time occurence so I have fewer details as to the surrounding circumstances.
I'm also having a hard time troubleshooting it because I can't find a way to reproduce it at all.
(also they weren't expecting a crash and weren't paying close attention to what programs were open l... Read more

I have a Dell XPS410 desktop that got a virus. I was having trouble cleaning it, and I'd been planning to put in a new hard drive anyway, so I got a new Seagate 3500320AS (500 gig, SATA).

I took out the old (infected) drive and put in the new drive, but it kept freezing during Windows XP installation using the Dell reinstall disks (Windows XP Home, SP 2).

Not being sure what was going on, and worried about the virus, I had a friend (on a different system) partition the drive and install XP Professional SP2, which he did without problems.

Putting the drive back into the Dell, it started to boot, but never finished. It would either hang or take me back to setup.

Here's what I tried and results:

* Found new BIOS for the XPS on the dell site, flashed the BIOS (no effect).
* Took out memory boards (4) one at a time and rebooted to see if one of them was bad
* Changed the SATA Controller from the DELL default of "RAID ON" to "RAID AUTODETECT / ATA." With this change the system boots, but hangs during operation (anywhere from 1 minute to 30 minutes or more into a session).
* Tried to reinstall Windows, but the seagate instructions say to hit F6 to load drivers. WHen I do that, the Dell installer will only look to drive A (my floppy) for drivers. I cannot find anywhere to download or extract driver files to put them on a 3.5 floppy.

I'm stuck, and frustrated, so I welcome ideas how to get this system back up.

When AC power fails the screen display continues because of internal battery back up.But the external broadband modem stops working due to loss of power and the laptop screen freezes .The mouse pointer and the key board also freeze making it impossible even to choose hibernate to save the work done as the only option is to press the power button to shutdown the computer and start it again loosing all work done in the process. Hi I've been having this random issue which I I'm not sure where it originates from.I own a Dell Inspiron  7537 .Recently it started freezing when left inactive, and rarely while in use.I also noticed it freezes and if left alone turns itself off after activating Dell SupportAssist.Based on a previous post I tried opening LogGrabber.exe , but the same thing happened.I ran diagnostics and so forth (safe boot and windows) everything should be fine. There is also a catch. After the freeze (and then me force shutting it down through the button) the clock goes 1 hour forward, sometimes 2 hours. At the start of all of this I thought the clock messes up and puts itself 1 hour forward, but when unsuccessful mases my system freeze.Any ideas?

A "stop 0x124" is fundamentally different to many other types of bluescreens because it stems from a hardware complaint. Stop 0x124 minidumps contain very little practical information, and it is therefore necessary to approach the problem as a case of hardware in an unknown state of distress. Hi- I have the Inspiron 1545. There is an issue with the screen. It has to be pivoted a certain way for the image to be clear. At certain angles and sometimes spontaneously, it freezes and slowly takes on a gray-white appearance with horizontal lines across the bottom of the screen. Bump it or re-position it, the screen image becomes clear again and you are back in action. It seams this is an issue with the laptop and not the software or anything. Is there a fix for this problem that someone is willing to share?
Many thanks,

I have a huge problem. (Sorry for my english) The day befoe yesterday I had a Dell Update shown up on my taskbar, I approved it, it ran, and after that I could not turn my laptop on.
When I try to start it shows me the dell boot screen and it freezes at the login screen OR at desktop OR already at a blank screen before login.
I tried everything, I cannot get to the recovery screen, because somehow Windows thinks that it will boot, and doesn't offer me the recovery option. I didn't made a recovery disk, I have no optical drive, and I had no spare USB drives when I bought the laptop, after that I have forgotten.
I tried to make a bootable Windows 8.1 installation kit on USB, I manage to start it in UEFI mode, System restore cannot succeed, because it cannot access the Windows installation. Auto repair will also not work.
In command prompt I tried to rebuild the boot record, it cannot find any Windows installation (Total identified Windows installations: 0)
I tried to remove C:\Boot\bcd after a tutorial, it says, Path not found - C:\Boot
"bcdboot c:\windows (file:///c:/windows) /s c:" will also not work, it just doesn't recognize the command.
I started a bootable USB with partitioning software. It finds all my drives and all my volumes. OS partition seems to be all right. I wanted to rebuild MBR with the partitioning software, but it can rebuild only MBR and no GPT. At this point I am not sure if I may do it, i want to keep the bootloader in GPT.

A:Windows 8.1 freeze on startup - Dell Inspiron 15 (7537)

Do you recall what the Dell Update was?
Have you changed settings in the BIOS previously.
Some systems will refuse to boot if Secure Boot is changed from on to off or from off to on.  This may happen if you updated the UEFI and reset the Secure Boot to default.
This doesn't sound like the problem that I described (the boot stops earlier), but I bring it up in hope that it might cause you to remember something.
If you can't run Automatic Repair and can't boot into Windows, your options are limited.
Are you able to access the menu to do a Refresh of the system?
Are you able to see the files in the partition that Windows is installed on?
If so, it's advisable to back these up immediately (at least the Users folder) in order to save your data.

This first occurred this past Thursday when I came into the room the screensaver appeared to be frozen and I could see what looked like little blue squiggly lines on the screensaver. I manually restarted the computer and everything seemed alright. However the next night while online, the mouse started to slow down to a crawl and eventually froze. Again I had to manually restart. It next happened once when I was doing a scan with Spybot S&D and again while attempting to watch a video with VLC player (audio suddenly froze up and repeated over and over with the "da-da-da-da-da-da" like sound when something is really stuck bad). I called Dell and they told me to hit F12 and run some tests. I ran EVERY test and everything passed no errors ASIDE from the CPU fan speed being incorrect and the Blu-Ray RW not passing it's self test. The next time I started up everything went pretty smoothly for a couple of hours, I was able to watch a youtube video and listen to an mp3 on Winamp.

However I was wrong in thinking the worst was over. I began to watch another video with VLC Player and six or so minutes into it the audio made that wonderful sound of being frozen and the video stopped. I attempted to exit the player to no avail. Another restart (which happened on it's own after I left the computer sit for a few moments after this freeze) and I figured I'd remove everything having to do with video and audio that I had installed and reinstall. Problem is a screen freeze. Reinstalled Windows 7 Home Premium on this Dell XPS7100 using the ?factory restore? option for a clean install. Updated all the Dell drivers as recommended by Dell Support. Ran the Windows Updater to download all critical patches until it stopped working. (That?s another problem I?m working on) Now the screen freezes and the only option is to power down and restart. The freeze usually happens after the computer is idle for a short time; so far it had not frozen in the middle of a working session. Any assistance in identifying what is causing the screen to freeze will be appreciated. Something else that may or may not be related: Upon reboot, I occasionally (but not always) get a BSOD with a message that in part says: ?Driver IRQ not less or equal??..? The system almost immediately starts again to reboot, so I have not been able to read all the message. I don?t know if the BSOD is related to the screen freeze since the two do not always occur in tandem. Several crash files from the Minidump folder are attached.

i just got a Geforce2 MX 400(AGP) for the computer, after installing it in my computer and clicking power, i notice blue lines going down my screen on computer startup and windows loading screen, after switching colors and resolution the lines were no more, still everything was working fine at the point(im guessing), then i went and downloaded the driver for the card(not sure if it was the PCI or AGP one) and they asked for a reboot, clicked i wanted to reboot later and i proceed to go in options and change resolution again, after switching resolution everything was still fine at that point, after opening internet and going on facebook my fan started to go crazy and computer froze, after rebooting again my computer rebooted by itself, now everytime i start the computer with the card in the fan go crazy and freeze the computer, the fan still turn and make loud noises even after freeze occur, i now removed the card and wont put it back unless i know what is making this thing go nuts.

Hi there,
I'm using Windows XP on a Dell Dimension 4700. Internet Explorer freezes up after 5-10 minutes of use - CTRL-ALT-DEL usually doesn't work - have to reboot. Recently, am unable to open c-drive, Control Panel or My Computer by double clicking. An error box comes up that says: Trial has Expired. You have exceeded your trial period. This evaluation version will no longer function. Please click on the "order button" to purchase your licensed version or the "Quit" button to exit.

Then it gives two options to click: ORDER and QUIT

When I click on Order to see what this is about, it takes me to a Paint Shop Pro page to order. I have an "ORIGINAL" version of Paint Shop Pro that I bought, so I don't know what this trial version is about.

I ran Norton 360 and it didn't catch any viruses. I ran Avast free version and it found some viruses which were fixed. I was unable to run either of these virus protection programs in safe mode so just ran them in normal mode.

I ran Malwarebyes in Safe Mode and it found various problems (Trojan Dropper, Trojan BHO, some Adware issues, etc.).

I'm still having problems. Please help. I'm a rookie user.

Thank you so much.

My computer has lock-ups every so often where I will have to manually re-boot.  Lately, in the past week or so I've noticed that when I boot my computer it works very hard (i can hear it working) but it takes 7-10 minutes until I can open and programs, internet, etc.   My desktop boots normal very quickly, I just can't access anything until the computer (works hard) for the 7-10 minutes.. then it seems to slow down or (catch up finally) and I can access stuff.    When I do have a computer freeze.. (few times a week) sometimes It will just freeze and sometimes it will freeze and a contant beep will sound.

However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

Two months ago bought a Dell 8900 from Best Buy. After 20 days, it would not start, same with the next 8900 replacement... only fewer days. The first gameware as a replacement did not start at all. The Alienware Aurora worked beautifully for 3 days and then would not start. In the 8900's,,, got the blinking amber lights on the start button. Tech is coming to replace motherboard. What the heck is happening? Could it be the monitor... or the external hard drive or what? Come on Dell,,, what's up? I have a Dell XP Laptop as a back up using the same external hard ddrive.

Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
Thanks, Al

A:Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, XP PRO, SP3, about a year and a half old. Almost since I first got it, every few months or so, when I boot up it hangs on the Dell screen. When I turn it off and reboot, it is fine. I use Rebit to back up everything on an ongoing basis and have an extended warranty from Dell. Is there anything I can do about this, or should do? Thanks for your help.

A:Dell computer occasionally stuck on Dell screen

I would run a memory tester

Download the prebuilt ISO, burn it to CD as an Image, boot from that CD and run the memory test for a couple of hours or overnight to stress test the memory.

Hi trebor193,You probably have some malware on your system, or more specifically your log on or user account. I personally don't like the idea of disabling all sartups thru msconfig--if you have an always on connection (Dsl, cable, etc.) when you reboot you'll be on the net without any antivirus or other protection and it only takes a few minutes to get infested that way. It would be better to leave your security apps running and disable startups one by one til you find the culprit.Actually there are much quicker ways. HijackThis is, in a way the ultimate startup manager. Malware, and some legit items, finds several ways to start that won't appear in MSCONFIG. Follow the instructions in this tutorial to get a log posted:How to post a HijackThis LogWe can usually pinpoint what the problem is fairly quickly this way.Or if you like, you can open Task Manager (Ctrl+Alt+Delete) and click on the processes tab. What seems to be taking up the most CPU and memory (besides system idle process)? Now click the performance tab--is the CPU maxed out?

Been getting this problem for the past couple weeks now.

When i power on my computer in the morning, it boots normally till it reaches the desktop, then it freezes. And none of the usual keystrokes are able to break it. I would manually power off then reboot it and hit F8 to start with the previous settings that worked......same thing happened.
Repeated the process, but this time starting in debugging mode, and it's all back to normal.

Anybody could advise me on this situation please? Greatly appreciate it

i have this weird problem with my pc, i hope you can help...
whenever i use the computer, it stops responding after a few minutes: mouse, keyboard, ctrl+alt+delete, it responds to nothing. even when i press the power button, which usually would make the computer log off and shut down (i use win xp) it doesn't do anything, its like the computer just freezes. I checked for viruses and spyware/adware and there's nothing out of the ordinary. I also left to cover off the case and tried to work with the pc that way, it worked the first time, but after I shut it down and turned it on again the next day the problem returned.
do you have any idea what might be causing the problem? is it more likely to be a hardware issue or something in the OS?

thanks a lot

I'm not 100% I'm posting this in the right area, as it's not actually a BSOD error that I'm having.
My system seems to randomly freeze once every couple of weeks, but has done so twice today and cost me some work so I thought I'd try and resolve it.

The freeze occurs with the open browser becoming unresponsive to mouse or keyboard. I can still activate already open browsers from the hot bar but they're also unresponsive. Mouse still moves and if I have an application open already (today it was the calculator) that will be responsive to both mouse and keyboard, I was able to do sums still. That then becomes unresponsive after a minute or so. Hot keys don't work, like alt-tab or ctrl-alt-delete. Windows start button still opens up to menu, but applications won't open from there. All are unresponsive.
Hard reset and Windows boots with no problems, everything working again.

A:Computer freeze.

Your syslog is completely filled with nothing but controller errors mentioned by the CdRom0 device. First, remove any media in your DVD drive. Then, make sure that your cable connection to your drive is ok as well as the power cable, or you may even need to disconnect it and see if that resolves things. The drive itself just may be bad for some reason (fortunately they're cheap). If you are using any drive emulator like Daemon Tools you may need to update it or uninstall it.

I searched around the net for possible causes and solutions but was not able to find anything conclusive. I doubt it's the video card because that seems to be in working order and there are no error messages, but you never know.

Have you tried to snap it out of the frozen state by accessing the Task Manager?

Ctrl + Alt + Delete >> Task Manager

I would try that first. If the machine does not respond once it enters the frozen state, restart your machine and access the Task Manager once the desktop environment loads. Particularly i'd look into the Performance tab to look into your CPU and PF usage statistics. Let the machine just sit idle with the Task Manager opened to the Performance tab and watch the statistics for a bit see if there are any spikes in CPU or PF usage.

If your machine locks up again, reboot and look into the Event Viewer for any Error or Warning codes / messages that may have occurred within the same time frame that your machine entered the frozen state.

Start >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >> Event Viewer

You'll want to look for clues in the System and Application nodes of the Event Viewer.

There's bound to be clues there.

Also, if you have recently installed any NEW hardware devices (RAM, HD, power supply, etc.) you might have a problem with the NEW hardware. Event Viewer should show you if there are any critical errors with your system.

Hi Everyone,
I'm currently running a four monitor screen set-up. Recently my main computer screen started freezing on me. It would work all day and then the computer screen would freeze on two of the four screens. The page would get blurry, and you could barely make out what you were looking at. The pointer mouse when going from screen to screen would only work on two of the screens instead of all four. I unplugged the power on those two screens and then plugged them back in. I switched the different jacks to see if it was those two particular monitors or those two particular jacks on the computer. I did a Malwarebytes test, and Avast test, RKill followed by ADWCleaner, and nothing negative came back. Right now my computer is running fine, but pretty soon it will freeze and I'll have to reboot. It now takes about 6 reboots before it begins working in the morning. Each reboot allows me to get a little further. It takes one or two to get to where Windows will even load the entire way, before I'm able to get on the internet... Read more

I have a generic computer and am running Windows XPSP2 pro, but the computer keeps freezing. I can get the screen to come up...sometimes...and I checked the system log. There are no system errors but on the application log I have a "faulty module" error on one of the software programs. Could the freezing and the faulty module error be due to outdated drivers? The hard drive is only a year old. I don't understand why it was working one day and started freezing up the next and within three days it freezes constantly. I don't know much about hardware. Is there any hope?

Intel Q6600 quad core

Geforce 8800 GT
3gb ram
600gb seagte HD

Right then...I bought this PC in February, and got blue screens almost straight away, so reinstalled Vista and everything was great. Then about 2 months ago I got an "IRQL not less or equal" blue screen, which, over the next few weeks gradually became more and more frequent until was happening all the time.I managed to reinstall Vista again, and this time limited what other software I installed with it(Vista is a bit wobbly with some software apparently!). It seemed to work, but then I started getting "BAD CALLER" blue screens,so I blamed Vista and installed XP a couple of days ago.No blue screens so far, but the PC has frozen 3 or 4 times already.I've run memtest, it said no errors.Hope someone can help, thanks.

A:Computer freeze

Try this:Boot to your Vista Setup CD
At the 1st window with the Repair option on the bottom Statusbar, do that to open the Repair Console
When you get to the Repair Console's Command Prompt enter CHKDSK C: /R (the R is not a typo)
Let CHKDSK do its thing, then reboot
Also, running CHKDSK from the desktop (via Start menu, Accessories, Command Prompt) by entering CHKDSK C: /F (the F is not a typo), occasionally. This should be part of your general system maintenance routine. Note that this will require a reboot to actually run.

One caution, I don't run Vista, so I may have some details wrong.

the software uses up your available ram too quickly. it cant compute the required amount of processes since your processor is most likely not powerful enough. therefore requiring a lot more addresses on your ram.

This is the first I had heard of Empowing Technology, so I Googled it and it appears to be an Acer program built into their machines. That being the case, your best alternative is to contact Acer support. Click here for a web page for Acer support. Hi everybody, here's my problem:
I used to get the BSOD with no hardware or software changes, so I then did a factory restore thinking I picked up a virus, now I no longer get it but the computer freezes up at night, every night, but not during the day. Occasionally it will tell me Windows (completely up to date) recovered from an unexpected shutdown and direct me to the minidump files, which I have attached here. In addition, anytime I run a graphics-intensive program like a video editor/renderer (After Effects CS6, Powerdirector 11) or try to render a 3D model image (Cienma 4d R15) the computer will crash a minute or two into the render. I have a sad integrated "video card" that has the latest drivers and the programs are up to date but everything rendered fine and worked well before the whole BSOD thing and factory restore. Windows updates do not install automatically I have it set to download and then notify me. The computer was set to shut down automatically upon a system failure but it didn't shut down, just froze. Look for an ATI video driver update on the HP site. You might even be able to install a PCIe video card in this desktop computer

Hey everyone,
I'm running Windows XP service pack 3,and I've been experiencing random freezes for sometime now.

It's always the same scenario:It runs fine for a while, maybe an hour or two and then becomes unresponsive.I can still move the mouse, but I cannot open any programs, windows ect.
If it happens during google chrome,I can open new tabs, but cannot load any new pages. Not even from a hyperlink(open in new tab).

It never happens during a game or anything, and I cleaned my computer of dust.
I doubt it's a heat issue.

I have Intel Core 2 Duo E7300,ATI Radeon HD 4350 card.
Motherboard manufacturer Hewlett-Packard model 2820h

I have to recover from these freeze with the power button.
I do not get any sort of error when it starts again. No BSoD.Just freezes.

I did a system restore a few days ago.It seemed to fix the problem. But the next day it froze again.

Any help would be appreciated.

If you are starting fresh, be sure to wipe out the hard drive completely. I recommend using a 3rd party program to ensure you are erasing all data off the hard drive. A link to DBAN is available in my signature.

**Please note -- If you have other existing partitions that have crucial data that you do not want erased, do not run DBAN.

My specs are as follows:
CPU: FX-6300 6-Core Processor Black Edition STOCK COOLER
GPU: 290x Tri-x OC
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-990FX
SSD: Samsung 850 250gb
Case: Rosewill CHALLENGER - Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower Computer Case
RAM: Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB & CORSAIR Vengeance 8GB (2 x 4GB) + random 8gig stick
PS: Rosewill ATX 12V 750-Watt 80 PLUS BRONZE

My problem: After about 2 hours of normal websearch & light gaming (Hearthstone) my PC will freeze but the computer will stay on. Though testing to see what could be the problem I tried extra cooling, and keeping my window open & fan on seems to delay this freeze. Do you think I just need a better cooler for my CPU? Used to use an ARCTIC Freezer 7 Pro Rev 2 but when I changed motherboards I got lazy and used the stock cooler.

I would gladly take any advice on what to do. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

Windows NT? How much RAM? Have you added any hardware? When did you first install? Has it ever worked? Did you try to set up a network during install? (Datacow and ezstock, ezload). Are you sure these programs are compatible with the operating system? It looks like these programs were written for windows not NT. They appear to have replaced files and over written addresses that were in use by other programs such as system files.

I notices an MMC.EXE program in there. That is the Microsoft Management Console. Why is that coming up? Have you " tweaked your system at all"? When did this happen? How did this happen. Be glad to help if I can. My gut feeling is that you will be reinstalling. ACPI AMLI is power management. NT does not support power management. Have you installed any network stuff?

You will be reinstalling it looks like. Figuring this out may not be worth the effort. You have already had a lousy 3 days back there in the end of November?

Hi guys... if anyone can help me it'd be GREAT!!!!!!

so 2 days ago, my computer randomly shut down and restarted on me. so i was like "wtf was that?" then ever since that time my computer would randomly freeze. i have to press the power button to shut it off because ctrl+alt+delete wont work. first i thought it was overheating so i took my case off and cleaned out my computer from dust and such. then i realized that my PSU fan wasnt working. it has 2 fans but only 1 of them is working. but it didnt feel hot to the touch. the one that's working is the one that's "inside" the computer and the one that's not working is the one right next to the power cord.

im not sure what's causing the random freezes. i ran malwarebyte and avg several times and nothing unusual came up. when i say randomly freeze it would sometimes last less than 10 mins after start up or sometimes happen after an hour.
a few times earlier, when it froze it would make a loud beeeeeeeeep sound until i restarted it. but now it doesnt make any sound it just freezes. i have no idea what's causing it so... i need help.

when it freezes, i can still move the mouse and i can click on desktop icons and open them. but i cant get the task bar on bottom to show up and right clicking would show the options but nothing would work when i click. when i open stuff on desktop, the window it self would freeze. kinda hard to explain clearly.

Hi my computer windows vista has been acting funny lately it freezes up in normal mode and I can't do anything. It will respond for about 1- 2 minutes than it doesn't. It works fine in safe mode. then I did a scan with malawarebytes it found nothing and then I did a scan with spy ware sweeper the same thing.

I also did a scan with avast pro and it found nothing. So I don't know what is going on. I do not have the re installation disc on me. I have done the system restore and that helped it for a little while but then the next day I tried to go into it in normal mode it failed and just froze again.

Is it possible I have some unknown malaware program on computer or unknown virus on computer if so Could you guys help me fix this issue any help would be appreciated.

We can take a look for malware- first we use Hijackthis and later another scan if need be.

please do these things:

go to Click here to download HJTinstall.exe
Click the blue "Download the Hijackthis Installer" link
Save HJTinstall.exe to your desktop. DO NOT just press run from the website
Double click on the HJTinstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Additional Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then save the log and then the log will open in Notepad.
Don't use the Analyse This button, its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.
don't forget this second part

Please also do this:

Open Hijack This and click on the "Open the Misc Tools section" button.
Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.
Click the "Save List" button. After you click the "Save List" button, you will be ... Read more

Computer has been freezing up about every 10 minutes after start up. I keep hitting the "kill switch" and restarting.
Sometimes on restart the Caps Lock light (A) flashes and then the computer shuts down before ever really starting up.
Sometimes the computer restarts -- only to freeze again in 10 mins.
Tried running Kaspersky and Malwarebytes complete scans, but computer freezes before finishing -- after about 1-5% or 10 minutes.

You can try updating to SP3 to see if it makes a difference.

Another good quick check is look into the Windows Event Log (the System Logfile and the Application Logfile). This tool Event Log Explorer makes going through and saving the Windows logfiles even easier.

Look for faults the are being reported (there are many red herrings that might appear as problems but aren't. So post back if you need help interpreting some of the events)

Googling quickly that dll file...looks like the file is from Symantec (that develops Norton). Not sure if that is the reason but having Norton and Mcafee on the same system is not a good idea.

Got to ask the obvious. Did you use thermal compound on the CPU and heatsink? Is the heatsink fan installed correctly, blowing in the right direction? Do you have all of the cables routed and secured for maximum airflow?Does anything show up in the Event Viewer at about the same time you have this problem?

I use Dell Picture Studio to view my digital pictures. When I start a slide show my computer will freeze up. The only way to get it started again is to hold the power button in for about 8 seconds to shut it down. I can look at the pictures individually with no problem. I have uninstalled the program and reinstalled it but that didn't help.

I also use Microsoft Streets and Trips 2002 and I have the same problem.

I have a Dell Inspiron 8100, Windows XP upgraded from ME, 256 Meg ram, 32 Meg video card, 1000MHz processor.

CMOS Battery failed.

After several or sometimes a few minutes logged on to Windows XP, the computer just freeze. No animation, no movements. It happens every time I logged on. Also, no activity signs on the LED. Tried to update through windows update but the computer freeze before it can scan for updates. Also tried booting in Safe Mode with networking, same thing happens. I also know that the CMOS Battery failed.

I have tried installing a separate Windows XP on another paritition and the computer freezes during the installation. I suspect it is a hardware issue.

What should I do?

Firstly you should replace the CMOS Battery (if you haven't already).Have a look in the Event Viewer for any errors at the time of the freezes. To open the Event Viewer go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer. Alternately, go to Start > Run and type in "eventvwr.msc" (without the quotes) and press Enter.Check in all the categories. If you find an error that occurred at the time right-click on it and select properties. Copy the information in the window and post it back here. This will help us diagnose your problem. How To Use the Event Viewer

A few days ago I was trying to copy a file to a usb drive and the computer froze. I couldn't access Task Manager and had to reboot to free everything up. Later when I tried to click on a game icon to open the program the computer froze up again and I had to reboot again. This has now happened several times over a few days. I have tried to find a solution but at at my wits end. I even tried system restore, but found there was nothing to restore, although I had created restore points in the past. I even tried installing an image of the system and other files, but that didn't work. Although I know a little about computers I am a novice at these sorts of problems.

the best way of unfreezing it is to turn it off and on again. without the help of professionals there is nothing you can do.

I am still trying to get a hang on how to move through this site and where I can respond and such. Recently, Master_Shake posted a message about their computer freezing. I was going to ask how they were able to produce the log (running processes) in order for OldTimer to help. I have been having some problems with my computer freezing. However, I think I figured one problem out. At times the mouse would freeze and then sometimes the whole computer soon after. I don't know if they relate, but when I put the mouse on my laptop I was notified that the USB "plug" was not working properly. Which the mouse was the only thing at the time using USB. So I think my mouse is bad. But on occasion my desk top is still freezing and at times runs really slow. Is there anyone that could help me. Thank you.

When I am running my computer and I leave it to defrag or virus scan the whole computer freezes. The mouse stops moving and the only way to turn it of is hold the power switch.

I installed a program to increase and decrease the size of hard disk partitions and it made the computer not load some of the time. Some times it would load and others it would get stuck on the boot at the Detecting IDE drives. I managed to get it to log on and I got the BSOD. I then logged on and it took ages to load and I resored it to 3 days ago before I installed the Partition Manager. Then ever since it has been freezing.

Any Ideas.

Thanking In Advanced Jack.
