New Dell computer w/XP - problems

Q: New Dell computer w/XP - problems

I have a new Dell computer P4 2.0 60 GB with Win XP Home version and having problems accessing Hotmail. Computer less than 2 months old. Using IE 6.0. When logging onto Hotmail, the computer sits and slowly progresses (meter moves 4 spaces) then nothing happens. No messages, just nothing. It also has McAfee Security system installed w/ firewall, antivirus. Don't know if this is causing computer to hang up.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.

I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.

Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.

My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.

Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??

I have a Dell XPS 410 that is 2 years old. I started getting blue screen errors and called Dell they said it was the hard drive. I replaced it and still kept getting the errors. When I called Dell again they said it was the mother board so I took it to Best Buy and they said it was the mother board. I had them replace it and have had it home for just a little over a week and today I got the blue screen again. It did a couple of restarts on its own and then today just the blue screen. Does anyone have any ideas on what else might be causing them?

Hello all, at my place of work, we have Dells and have had many problems. OS is XP. Have further complications in that these are for the public's use and are connected to a reserve system and it must communicate with the PC's before they are able to load. We contracted a virus and have been having problems ever since. Problems such as Spyware being loaded on some PC's although they all are on the same the program-they are all on a server and should not be individual enough to even allow Spyware download.

Plus, the reservation software has not been printing people's reserves for their PC. They have to come to the staff members so we can look up where their reserve is wheras before, a little slip would print off telling them where it was.
Anyone else have same problems or have ideas on what is going on?

Dell Optiplex GX620 computer, about 2 1/2 years old, has suddenly started running really slowly. I couldn't even open two web browser windows at the same time. I ran Malwarebytes' Antimalware, and it was running so slowly, I rebooted ran it in safe mode, no problems found, also no problems found by AVG 8.5 pro version.

I decided to do a chkdsk on it, and it found some bad sectors, after fixing that, a week later, I'm having to go through this all over again, more bad sectors.

I called Dell, (computer is still under warranty) they had me run diagnostics and I get a message "FAIL - Dell Hard Drive Diagnostic Return Code: 7"

They are telling me to reinstall the OS, but I'm not happy, that's a ton of work, considering all the software I'd have to reinstall on a failing drive???

My laptop (Dell Inspiron 1564 - Windows 7 Home Premium) slowed down a few days ago and I decided to restore the system to Dell Factory Image. The process started but stopped more than halfway and gave the following message, "Failed to apply Image". I restarted the system but it would now not boot up, not even in safe mode! Perhaps, during the restore process few essential Windows files have been erased.

I want to restore the Dell Factory Image and cannot re-install Windows since I have lost the product key of my original Windows 7 installation DVD provided by Dell at the time of laptop purchase. Your help / advice is solicited and would be much appreciated.

P.S. System's Recovery Partition is intact and has factory.wim and other related directories / files intact.

A:Problems with Dell Factory Image Restore - Dell Inspiron 1564

The product key sticker on a Dell laptop is usually in the battery compartment.

Have you tried to run the Dell restore again? It won't boot because the restore started but failed so the "C" drive is corrupted.

If that does not work, suggest posting on the Dell forum where you can get help from those more familiar with Dell's.

So over the past 2-3 weeks I kept noticing that my battery kept dying even though I would shut it down (yes window > shutdown) the computer with a full battery. The next evening I would power up and see that the battery was at 20% from full charge. This is a BRAND NEW as in <2 months XPS 9550. I checked my event log and WHAT THE H@#$??? It is absolutely filled with Dell Foundation Service and Dell Product Registration events all saying  " Power event Handled Successfully by the service." Clearly it is not.. The stupid things run every 10 seconds. So when I think I am powering down my computer, it is being blocked by these services and actually just going to sleep... but it actually isn't sleeping. Its waking up every 10 seconds. Can anyone PLEASE help me determine the issue. Apparently according to update service everything is up to date.

The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?

But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.

About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.

Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?

I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

Two months ago bought a Dell 8900 from Best Buy. After 20 days, it would not start, same with the next 8900 replacement... only fewer days. The first gameware as a replacement did not start at all. The Alienware Aurora worked beautifully for 3 days and then would not start. In the 8900's,,, got the blinking amber lights on the start button. Tech is coming to replace motherboard. What the heck is happening? Could it be the monitor... or the external hard drive or what? Come on Dell,,, what's up? I have a Dell XP Laptop as a back up using the same external hard ddrive.

I have a Dell Inspiron 530, XP PRO, SP3, about a year and a half old. Almost since I first got it, every few months or so, when I boot up it hangs on the Dell screen. When I turn it off and reboot, it is fine. I use Rebit to back up everything on an ongoing basis and have an extended warranty from Dell. Is there anything I can do about this, or should do? Thanks for your help.

Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
Thanks, Al

A:Loading Older Dell OS To Newer Dell Computer

You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.

Hey I've been having major problems with my Laptop.
Every ten or so minutes when my McAfee 2010 security suite disables real-time scanning it'll re-enable itself causing a lot of alarming pop-up boxes which is slowing my computer. Not sure whats causing it but it seems like malware.
Next theres this process which starts at windows start-up (DivxUpdate.exe), I don't think this is actually a part of divx. I've read somewhere that it is a form of autorun malware, it consumes 99% of my cpu majorly slowing down my computer, I think I may have similar malware on here that are problematic.
Also my firefox frequently say that there's an unresponsive script which temporarily freezes my whole computer and when I finally manage to get to task manager I have to end the process which seems to be using a regular amount of cpu and memory.
I made a topic exactly 1 month ago but nobody answered so I thought I'd make a new one seeing as the problems are progressing and building up.

Thanks for any help I'm provided with.

Can anyone suggest a way to get a dell 770 printer to work on a non dell win98 system?

My friend was given the printer from his friends, but it's a dell and it's pretty muh brand new so he doesn't want to throw it away. It's also better than his current printer

Anyway, he uses the dell install disk but once it begins and runs the setup app it gives a message akin to pirating. Saying something like -this computer does not support dell , or something like - this computer is not a dell.

Can anyone offer advice. I did a search on google and dells' site and here.
I couldn't quite find anything that might lead me to an answer..?

I have a two year old Dell PC with Windows 7. I got a virus in my computer that by phone and computer takeover Norton located in my MBR. When they cleaned it my computer will no longer boot up. Norton worked with me for three days on the problem but we were unable to fix the computer. I followed other web sites and repaired my MBR but it still will not boot up. I tried System Repair, Check point, Image, and Dell system restore and all failed. I have tried to use the Windows install CD and all I get is a black screen with a flashing cursor and then after 3 minutes the compute attempts to boot again and fails. I tried everything to try and wipe the drive from C prompt and it will not let me. I have very weak computer skills but I can follow directions and I have wiped a previous computer I owned. (I confirmed that my CD drive is working) I also should mention I have a second hard drive on my computer that I backed everything up to.

A:Dell Computer PC will not load Windows install CD from computer crash

See if you can reset the BIOS hardware/software connections and then clear the CMOS to access your Windows 7 install disc.
Resetting hardware/software connections in the BIOS and clearing temporary memory of corruption:Shut down and turn off the computer.
Unplug the computer from the wall or surge protector (then remove the battery if it is a laptop).
"Remove the computer from any port replicator or docking station, disconnect
cables to printers or devices such as external monitors, USB memory sticks or SD cards, headset or external speakers, mouse or auxiliary keyboard, turn off WIFI and Bluetooth wireless devices." (Use Hard Reset to Resolve Hardware and Software Issues HP Pavilion dv5000 Notebook PC series - HP Customer Care (United States - English))
Hold down the power button for 30 seconds. This closes the circuit and ensures all
power from components is drained to clear the software connections between the BIOS
and hardware and clear any corruption in the temporary memory.
(If it is a laptop, plug the battery back into the laptop and then) Plug the computer back into the wall. Do not reconnect any unnecessary peripherals; monitor, keyboard,
and mouse should suffice and be the only peripherals reconnected.
Turn it on to reinitialize the software connections between the BIOS and hardware

Clear the CMOS:Use your system manual to find instructions for accessing the BIOS...
In the BIOS, go to the EXIT screen...

Hello. As the title says, I was given this computer with a load of add-ons, malware, porn, and I don't know what else. I cleaned out what I could, with Spybot Search & Destroy (which wouldn't run properly at first because of the above), Norton Antivirus, McAfee Antivirus, and manually removing files.

I still have problems, and all McAfee did that I could see was hook to me and run antivirus, which I did myself, anyway. When I boot up, there's an error messege, something about the boot.ini, then it boots up. This morning when I booted up, msconfig popped up and it acted as if an invisible mouse were pushing the buttons on it over and over again. I can't activate the guest account nor can I make any other account without it being an administrative account. I don't have the restore disks, and this old one doesn't come with the option to restore to factory settings without them. Do you suggest trying to find an XP cd? I went to the Dell site, and I can't find where to order for this machine. It's all about the ones who have the image to restore without, it seems.

It sounds like a chainsaw, and I don't want to spend money on it, or not much, when I could purchase another computer for what it would cost to clean and upgrade this one by a professional. Any advice is appreciated.

I am attempting to fix this computer for a friend. A windows system 32 file was corrupted and after attempting safe mode, last known config booting and a repair attempt with no luck I decided to reinstall windows. So the lady that gave me the computer said the Windows Xp disc was already in it. So I booted from CD and installed Windows. Going through the initial setup the CD Key on the sticker did not work. I pulled out to CD to find that it was a CD that she had me use before on another computer. Its and unattended Corporate copy (no idea where she got it). When I tried this first install I did not delete the small (FAT) partition that was already on it, just the NTFS partition. So my questions are

1.) Should I delete this small FAT partition when working with Dells?
2.) Is the CD Key on the sticker a standard OEM Key or a Dell specific key?
3.) If the key is a standard OEM and I install from an OEM disc can I get all the Dell drivers from the website or do I have to find the actual CD's that came with the computer.
You guys have never let me down

I've got problems getting any USB device to work on my Dell Inspiron 1000 running under XP Home edition. Basically it recognises the device but then loads up the "found new hardware" wizard which fails to find the correct drivers.

If anyone's got any ideas it would be fantastic!

A:Dell USB problems

There many different types of USB devices. Basically they usually come with their own specific drivers. You should check the Manufacturer's web for installation instructions.
It is common to install the software bfore installing the hardware.
You may have to close the Hardware Wizard and use an installation file from the Manufacturer or direct the Wizard to the correct files by using the manual installation procedure.
Also make sure your USB controller drivers are the latest version at Dell or Microsoft Update.XP has had a couple of updates to the USB driver system.

I have a Dell XPS M1210 Laptop. It had some spyware on it that I just could not get to go away, so I formatted the drive and reinstalled everything. Now I'm still having problems. I solved some of them be reading your forum but I've still got some problems and I hope you can help.

First off, I'll browse to a web site and se the page coming up, then all f the sudden, it stops and I get a big fat "Page cannot be displayed error" as if I'm not even connected to the internet or the site does not exist. My desktop does not do this, so I don't believe it's my connection.

Second symptom, I have windows update enabled, and it downloads updates, but every time I try and install them, it always says it can't install. Doesn't matter if I try to install while it's running or if I choose the shut down and update option.

Finally, it just runs slow and I'm having problems with various applicaton crashing randomly. Media center won't run at all and I can't connect to shared folders. I'm not sure where to procede from here. Thanks in advance.

I got a Dell Inspiron 1501 a little over a year ago. In that time, I have had my hard drive crash, have gone through 2 adapter cords (one in a little more than a month) and have had it overheat regularly. It went through a period where it regularly crashed whenever it tried to sleep. Now, my battery is dying. I go to class, and within half an hour, the battery is dead. I use the laptop on power saver, and turn down the screen light so it draws less power. I checked the processes I was running, and they are definitely not a huge power draw. I'm not downloading or streaming, just using the internet and Word. So, at this point, I am wondering what is going on. Is there anything I can do at this point so that I don't have to pay 150+ dollars for a new battery? I used the battery quite regularly over the summer, and I am remembering the time seeming to be shorter on my battery life, but I didn't think anything of it at the time. I kind of want to chuck the thing through the window and go buy a Mac... So, that's my rant...I apologize, but I am desperately hoping that someone can help...can I fix anything so the battery lasts longer?! Or am I doomed, and do I have to buy a new battery?

Oh hell, it's a Dell... but Macs eat their batteries as well, and they're twice the price to replace.

First, I'd check to see if your beastie has a Dell Power Management option - did you get it with the above mentioned XP Home or did it come with Vista?

Now normally, RAM wouldn't be a factor, if the computer was running a Pentium or Athlon, BUT this one's listed as having a Duron/Turon or Sempron - to ease it's straining, even on Word, I would add RAM - remember, this beastie is not only running your programs with the RAM, but since it's got an integarted video system, the RAM is also running your screen. More memory would help.

As for the battery, that would be why I would look for the Dell Power Manager (if you've got it - it would either be under the Dell tab in the Start Menu, or in the Control Panel). Usually there is a refresh option there. Also, I would check Dell's website to see if there has been any upgrades to the battery management software they put in their machines (

I apologize if this is in the wrong forum. Got a Dell DJ 20 for my birthday. Subscribed to Napster To Go, and I DL'ed a crapload of songs to the DJ 20. I went to play it last night, and on every song (including the ones I loaded from my CD's), I got an error message of "No licence to play. Sync licence from PC"

I went to Napster on the PC, and couldn't find any button that said "sync". Went into MS Mediaplayer 10, and was able to sync from there, but not at Napster. Any help? Version is 2.11.04, the latest frimware update.

while ago I was asked to help work on a dell laptop, the problem was it would display Disk Read Error on start up, even when the recovery disc was in. I went into BIOS and disabled all devices except cd drive and did a reformat, on restart I re enabled all devices and continued to successfully install vista, after that I installed all drivers, software, and updates and gave it back.

Today they called me and told me it was messing up again, it displayed the safe mode screen no and after about 30 seconds it went blank and displayed nothing at all, just a black screen. I haven't looked at it yet but any ideas.

I have a Dell A920 printer. When I go to print there are white lines through the text and when trying to print thin black text a yellow line prints instead. I thought it was that my ink cartridge was messed up so I got two new ones( black and color) and I keep having the same problem. Ive done all the troubleshoot cartridge things the printer tells you to do so I'm not sure if its the printer itself thats the problem

A:Dell printer problems

Either the printer electronics or the print head is faulty, in my view.

You could eliminate the printer driver software on the PC by doing a printer self test (the manual will tell what buttons to press)

I just received a semi-new computer from my uncle, a Compaq Presario(Model unsure, but it's the one with 2.4GB Celeron 512MB DDR RAM, 120GB HD.) and a Dell monitor from 2004. Now, I hooked up the monitor to the tower and there is no signal from the tower to the monitor. I just get a standby power message from the monitor when it is hooked up to the tower, that says to disengage just move the mouse or hit any key on the board but doesn't respond to either. Furthermore when it is unhooked to the tower, the monitor if on remains in a color test mode.. could anyone help? It'd be appreciated.

When I try to install windows 7 it says that my webcam is not compatible and wants to remove it from my system. Has anyone else had this problem or know of a way around it? The laoptop is brand new and I don't want to mess it up. Thanks.

A:Problems with Dell Installation

Hi. What you can do is go to the device manager. Right click on the webcam and disable it. Then upgrade to Windows 7.

Once at Windows 7 desktop, re-enable the camera in the device manager and see if it works. If not, try a Windows Update for the driver. If still no good, let me know and I'll have a solution for ya.

Hey i have a Dell 2408WFP Rev0 LCD i have had it now for about 3 or 4 months and it has always been quite hot, but reciently it has been getting so hot it actually burnt my finger really badly.

So far there are no visible effects on the screen (it is a very good screen, NOT a TN panel).

I use the screen for graphics, texture & 3D design so colour accuracy and high resolution is important.

Will the heat eventually damage the screen, the actual screen itself, well the top of it does get worryingly hot it is not just the case?

If so how do i fix this, I bought the screen from EBay so I cant send it back to Dell

The original HD that came with the dell is home edition. I understand that the dells have an embedded restore partition on them but that is a final resort.

All I need to do is to get all the data off it and then I can do the restore partition option and see if everything goes back to normal.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

tried to format the SATA drive using the IDE drive with the new OS installation on it. No luck the IDE couldn?t read the SATA drive, what gives?

When I go to install the OS my system is saying it cannot find an HD to install windows XP blah blah, msg. No matter how many ways I try to get the HD read by the system to install a new os installation it won't read the SATA drive.

All this points to drivers. You must realize that XP does not have SATA drivers. These drivers must be installed before the OS can even see the drives. During an install Windows will prompt you to press F6 to install any SCSI or RAID controller drivers. This is where you need to install the SATA controller drivers. The will need to be on a floppy disk.

My computer has been very odd for the last several months.  I've gotten lots of serious viruses and have reinstalled Windows countless times.  After getting everything reinstalled again onSaturday night, I went to bed leaving the computer on over night to recieve updates and render some video stuff I was working on.  Unfortunately, when I turned the computer screen back on, I saw just a huge glob of random distorted pixels everywhere, with weird patterns and such.  When I did some research, I found it was my graphics card that had crashed, and I then started the pc back up as normal, yet it got stuck at the Windows 7 flag with "starting windows".  I had a extra failsafe partition with no OS on it, and I proceeded to put the installation disk in and boot it up.  Unfortunately, the Windows disc wouldn't even boot up.  I then ran a diagnostics test that gave me error code 2000-0146 (which usually means a failing hard drive) when running the DST short test.  I know for 100% the hard drive is fine and has nothing wrong with it so I'm not sure what the problem is.  I think it is some underlying virus, but who knows what exactly it is.
I'm currently running of the partion magic linux included on HBCD to go here.  I'm so confused about what the problems are.  i'm frustrated and I really need to get this computer back up to full health ASAP for work.

A:Dell XPS m1530 problems

This could be one of several problems, but assuming you can't get to your Vista desktop anymore, (is that right?) when you power on the pc, tap away at the F8 key, quickly, and straight after pressing power button.
Do you see a blackscreen with white text? If yes, scroll down with cursor key to the line 'Use last known good configuration' and press 'enter'.
But without knowing any more, your problem could be, a faulty RAM board, (5 minutes to swap in a new one, and not expensive), or a failing Hard drive, not good, or other main circuit board problem. It's not so likely to be the battery though, but try the F8 key (Safe mode) idea first.

Hello Dorothy,
Here is the problem. You plugged the printer in without first installing the USB drivers and program. get all the Vista updates especially .net framework and Java.
copy and paste the links beginning with HTTP
Unplug the printer and uninstall the printer drivers by running this patch:

Reboot your computer to complete the uninstallation Procedure
Without plugging in the printer, install the drivers, they can be found here:

The program will prompt you to plug in printer.

Glad to see you Dorothy

Hello All:
I just read the "sticky" pertaining to posting HJT information. I will try my best to comply.

First I have a Dell laptop that was running just fine. Within the last week it has been freezing up quite often for no apparent reason. I have to manually shut it down. I also notice that it takes way to long to boot up. (It used to take about 90 seconds or so, it now takes about 5 minutes) If I touch a key during that period of time it wiil just freeze up. I am submitting my HJT for review. If there are no apparent problems I am open to suggestions. Thank you.

My company recently purchased 8 Dell laptops, and all 8 of them are having this problem. Some worse than others, but they all do this.

The video seems to "flake out" and look like only a portion of the screen is running at a resolution that the screen can't handle - not the whole screen, and it's intermittant. It happens outside of Windows (ie. when running the Windows Memory Diags, and even the Dell Diags), so I know it's not a software issue. Two of the laptops have also experienced the screen going either solid white, or solid black for a second or two, then restoring itself. It's not the UAC, as there's no prompt for Yes/No or a password.

Dell came out and replaced the screen and cables on one laptop yesterday, which did not fix the problem. They came out today and replaced the motherboard (with embedded video) on the same laptop, and one other laptop, but neither one has been fixed.

Since I upgraded the memory in all of these laptops (from 8gb, 2 modules, to 16gb, 2 modules) when we bought them, I replaced the memory back to the modules that came with the laptop, and it's still flaking out on the video.

We're in the process of returning these laptops to Dell, and I'm hoping to get something other than Dells, so we don't have this problem again. Is there anything else hardware wise that could be causing this problem?

A:Problems with Dell machines?

Im sorry that you are having problems with the dell computers. over the years ive had many laptops and desktops from dell with rarely a problem.the only known model of dell to have serious problems is the xps laptops that are usually used for gaming. those have been prone to have motherboard problems consistantly.i dont know what models you bought but for business use the dell precisions cant be beat for business computing needs. i have 2 of them and will recommend them to anyone. they are well made and should give you years of trouble free the desktop line the optiplex will also do the job needed.

I bought this laptop used, and it worked perfectly the first time I used it. Then the next time I went to do something with it, I couldn't get it to work. It completely refused to boot. It seems that the fan turns on, then the computer shuts off, back and forth, ad nauseum, until I remove the battery.
I try again later, and it starts but runs veeery sloooowly.
I get mad and I find an identical computer without a HD, I install the HD from the first computer, and the second one seems to work just fine.
Just for fun, I decide to try and start the first one without the HD, and lo and behold, it starts and I can go to the start up screen. I select for it to boot first from the CD-ROM, and I put in a Knoppix and it boots, etc.
I shut it off to try with an Ubuntu disc, and when I try to turn it on, it does the same thing as before, off and on.
What could be the cause of these intermittent brain farts?
I have tried everything I can think of, but it appears to be a completely random problem.
Thanks in advance..

The blue screen flashes up and I can only pick out the phrase System_Failure_Power_Status, and then it reboots and says the system has recovered from a serious error. I have tried everything I know to fix this but it still does it regularly. Help Me! Thanks

Hello I am currently trying to hook up my dell latitude cpx to my tv to use it as my monitor. It has an S-Video out port, and my tv has RCA ports only, so i purchased a cable which is s-video to an rca connector for my video in. Well when I boot up my laptop, when i get to the welcome screen in xp, it starts to display on my tv, but then about 5 to 10 seconds after that it flickers and the picture goes away.Ive tried everything in the display settings and also enabled everything in my BOIS, with no luck, could anyone help me??

Thanks in advance!

A:Dell Latitude cpx, to tv problems

Same. I have a DELL Latitude CPxH running Windows XP and I wanted to use composite video via the S-Video port. It would display on the TV for about 20 seconds at the Welcome screen then go blank.

My solution was to switch off hardware acceleration in the Display Properties / Advanced Settings button / Troubleshooting tab. Move the slider all the way to the left. Reboot as instructed.

PS. The F8 key has no effect. Only one monitor appears in the display properties.

Hi all,
I received my copy of W7 on Monday, which was nice I was expecting it to get lost an undelivered pile of letters somewhere.

Anyway, I?m weighing up whether to go ahead with the instillation now or not.

I?ve got a Dell 19? SE198WFP monitor. It?s running at 1440x900 resolution with Vista using an ATI HD3850 graphics card. I?ve been getting together some W7 drivers ready for the install but can?t find any for the monitor.

Dell has started rolling out W7 drivers, but it doesn?t appear to be supporting my monitor (yet). Dell Monitor Drivers and Downloads

The W7 compatibility centre isn?t live yet either.

What would people suggest, as I don?t want to be left with an odd resolution.
Is there a generic 19? driver which would work?

I played around with a RC of W7, all be it on a different very basic PC, but using the same monitor and had no joy installing the Vista drivers.

Can anyone be any help?

A:Dell Monitor problems

hi thedecline, and weclome to the best forum on the planet (possibly),

the good news is that your monitor should work fine without a specific driver. windows 7 will find a suitable one for your display.

the graphics driver is far more important.

enjoy your new os!

I am having an issue with my Dell Lapton running Windows XP. The issue is, I keep getting password erros while trying to retrive me e-mail. I've tried multiple e-mail clients (thunderbird, outlook) and neither work. However if I use webmail it works. I've also tried putting the e-mail on another computer on the network using Microsoft outlook, and that worked. I've very confused, does dell have some kind of security software I don't know about?

A:E-mail problems / Dell.

Lately, any dell that my corporate clients buy, I have to clean up first. I don't know what others' experiences have been but they install so much bloody crap on it. There's alot of overhead on the new machines and may be part of your problems.

Get hijackthis and post you log. I don't know if there's a link on this site for it or not, but you can search google.

Hi guys

Asus A8N-E (no add-on video card, just using the one on the Asus mobo)

Turning to techguy yet again.

Bought a 2005fpw from eBay from a Trusted Seller. Unit arrived with a handmade CD for users manual, not a Dell labelled CD. Plugged it in through the DVI input and... I get a very strange image: almost no definition, very bright pastel colours (most pages are predominantly bright pink) and a TV-interference type of thing across the whole screen.

I tried the D-SUB input and I get nothing at all, only the Self Test box which bounces, pong-like, around the screen.

I switched back to DVI and lowered the resolution to 1024 X 768 and I finally got the monitor to display a 'normal' image.

So I went to Dell and downlaoded the latest drivers. Now another wierd thing happened. I unzipped the drivers and followed the steps in the read me and at the end of the process, Windows told me something like 'WIN has determined that the software you are running is adequate' or something like that. Basically it told me that I didn't need this driver update. I thought that was a bit weird. I purchased a Dell E228 WFP a few months back, but sent it back the next day (TN panel, inferior image quality). However, I never did install any drivers for it (as far as I remember).

So then I played around for another hour and just for the hell of it I tried to install the updated driver again. This time... it worked! Windows said it has successfully updated my dri... Read more

It's me once again looking for help. The HJT log below was generated after installing and running NAV and various Adware/Spyware tools. I was wondering if there is something(s) there I should be worried about or that needs to be taken care of.

I noticed that there's a lot of Oracle 9.2 processes running (I have Oracle installed on the system but have not run it in a while, if the running processes are not needed by any other system processing, can it be configured not to be resident in memory - not sure that's the term I want) I also have VB, Perl etc installed on the system.

The Oracle processes running appear to be an HTTP Server (twice?). If you do not need them, I would recommend saving the CPU cycles and killing them.

Hey guys, I'm new here. I have a Dell XPS 400 desktop that has the specs to run Vista, and I have a Vista Install DVD. My problem is that the computer will not recognize the DVD. I have it set to boot from CD first, and it ignores the DVD and tries to boot into Windows XP. It is not the DVD, because I have tried it on other computers and it reads it. Does anyone know what I can do about this? I would really appreciate some help on this, and if you need more info please ask.

A:Upgrade Dell XPS 400 problems

Hey Ubuntu Vista.

All you need to do is put in the disk and run setup from WITHIN windows. So just boot into XP like normal and run Setup. From here, you can choose to do a clean install or an upgrade. If you do a clean install, just install it into the same partition that XP is on (assuming you want to replace it). All your old files will be SAVED in a Windows.old folder.

I have a Dell Inspiron E1505 which origonally came with windows Vista. Due to Vista's incompatibility with my software and external hardware, I reformatted it to XP pro (as I understand many others have done) Since then, the computer has twice misplaced important windows files, forcing me to re-load xp pro all over again and losing all stored files.

My question is, does anyone have any insight into why this happens and how it can be avoided in the future?

Also, is there any way to save the files on my laptop, with wndows currently unoperable, to another computer's hard drive?

A:Dell windows xp problems

Easiest way to copy off files would be to use a usb to sata adapter and then plug it into another pc and copy off what you need.

I have a latitude D505, and i am experiening drop outs with my wireless connection. Whenever i am connecting to my home network my connection will randomly just drop out and not reconnect. I have tried connecting to the same network with 2 other computers; one an older dell, which dropped the connection, then quickly picked it back up. The third computer, a inspiron 9300, would keep a signal, but the strength would drop very low sometimes. I also find that after a while of not using my inspiron, it would disconnect from my home network, and not allow me to reconnect unless i unplugged the power to the router for 15 seconds, then plugged it back in. I believe it may be a router problem, but i am not quite sure, so i would like to get some input from you guys.

Here are the machines on my network:
Dell latitude D505 w/intel wireless
Dell Inspiron 9300 w/intel wireless
D-Link wireless G router w/ wep encryption enabled.

A:dell wireless problems

A couple of things I'd check first are:

1.) Router configuration-lease time on the DHCP, short lease times might cause this.
2.) Idle time before disconnecting from ISP. Set this to never.

I would also check to see if there is a firmware update for your router.

Perhaps a reset to factory setting and start from scratch.

Just some of the things that I would check for and try if the problem continued.

Hi, I have a Dell vostro 1000 labtop with windows vista home basic. I can not print with my Dell Photo AIO (all in one) 926. Everytime I try to print something it pops up with this error message: "Communication Not Available The printer cannot communicate with the computer. Please turn on "Enable Bidirectional Communication" setting in the printer properties dialog (Though if I check the documents that are waiting to be printed it says that document is printing).

I have gone into the printer properties dialog (Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Printers. Then right click on the printer and press properties. Correct me If I am wrong) and checked for that option and I have not found it.

I did, however find a option called "Enable bidirectional support" in the ports tab so I assumed that was the option it told me to enable. It uses the port USB001 I think and so I checked the option. The problem is, is that even though I press "apply" and "ok" when I bring it back up it is not checked anymore. I can keep enabling it and it will still be disabled.

The printer is on, it is plugged in directly into a outlet, It's cables are plugged in correctly, the printer spooler service is enabled, and if I try to print a test page using the interface (actually on the printer not on the computer) it comes out fine.

Can anyone please help me?

HI Guys, I am having an issue with said printer, and would be extremely grateful for any help at all. having just installed Win 7 on my Mum's computer, i am having a problem getting this printer to print. it scans and copies as it should, it just wont print, the printer is in good working order, and was working fine on the previous XP installation.

The PC is a dell dimension 5150, with an Intel pentium 4 CPU @3GHz, 2GB RAM, Dell Photo AIO 924 Printer, and Windows 7 x86 Build 7000.

After the installation i downloaded and installed updates, including the dell drivers which showed in win update. during the updating one the dell drivers (dell inkjet drivers) failed. the imaging driver installed without issue. i have tried the vista drivers, everything appears to have installed, the printer is set as default printer, and scans ok, but when i go to print i receive the error message - could not start printer, please check printer configuration. the printer has been configured though.

I am about to re-install and not choose automatic updates, and install the vista drivers on the fresh install, as i am wondering if the vista drivers would not install because of corrupted files from the failed (windows update) install.

I am only visiting at my Mum's, and actually leave tomorrow morning, and really dont want to leave her with no printer, as it will be some time before I am back here.

Anyone any ideas?

A:Dell 924 printer problems

Hi Fabio and welcome to the forum!

The issue of the Dell Photo AIO 924 Printer has also been prevalent in Vista

I've checked the downloads available for your printer in Dell support and it shows 4 available vista downloads, I'd suggest to give those a spin, the drivers and the patch.

Tip: After trying to install the drivers normally and it still fails, you could try installing them in Vista compatibility mode.

Now if all else fails, you could try this - Windows 7 driver solution

Last week I had a problem and called Dell Support. Since I had up graded Vista to Windows7 (thru Dell), I had to pay a fee to get the support I needed.
While corrected the problem that I called, the tech said that I needed to get rid of CCleaner and AVG as they were no good and could damage my computer. He took the CCleaner off before I could stop him. I refused to let him touch AVG pro as he was trying to sell me a $256 version of McAfee. I reluctantly agreed to let him install PC tuneup which he. OK, I've been a Dell customer for more than 15 years and if it keeps the PC running, great.

Nothing but trouble since!!
I have several corruptions occuring...for example in trying to print excel or word documents to Nitro PDF, I get "a fatal error inside twain manager (exception code Ox00000fd) Twain Functions are Disabled.
When I tried to create a PDF from Nitro importing excel or word documents (as I have done many times before this weekend) I get "Could not open TWAIN devices 'cannonMX7600 Ser"

Well, I just go back with a restore and fnd that doesn't work either, I get "System restory failed to restore C:\Windows with its original copy at the restore point. Unspecified error 0x80081a90."

Before I call and raise hell with Dell - that is if you can get a human - Has anyone else run into this kind of problem with this product.

I just got my Dell today. I had the exact same Dell 5 days ago and was having the same problem. I took it to a Best Buy and the Geek squad said that I had a bad wireless card. So I got a new computer and now I'm having the same problem but worse. I just booted up my Dell with Window's Home Premium 64 bit for the first time minutes ago. After going through all the initial startup info I tried to get online wirelessly to check my email. I could not get online at all. It said that my computer had "excellent signal strength" but "limited to no connectivity". Sometimes I can surf the web and sometimes I can't. I have antivirus software and I am using firefox
(as internet explorer would just keep getting this pop-up that said that Internet Explorer was not working). I have the correct network password and all the other computers on the network work fine. Even my old old toshiba works great. My computer is brand new and already having problems.

I have full signal strength and it just says "no internet access" under my network name. It will go in and out of working internet and its very annoying. I have reset the router and modem and check the router. The router works fine and everyone else seems to connect to the computer fine. PLEASE HELP ME!!

A:One day old Dell having internet problems

Without knowing the model name or number of your dell, or the manufacturer name, model name, model number and revision number of the network adapter that you seem to be having problems with.....
Here's a shot in the dark for you.
Some Dell wireless adapter have a default setting for BSS Mode (N) and that can cause similiar issues as you are experiencing so give this a whirl.
Open device manager
expand network adapters
select then right click the problem wireless adapter and choose properties
select the "Advanced" tab at the top
In the left column titled "Property:" see if you have a BSS Mode listed. If so select it and in the right column titled "Value:" use the drop down arrow to change from 802.11n to 802.11g
OK your way back out of there and reboot and see if that helps.

My PC at work is a Dell (Intel Core 2 Duo, 3Ghz, 4Gb RAM) running XP Pro. I wanted to put on Windows 7 but apparently it's not possible. According to our IT chappie Dell machines can only function with OS's that are pre-installed by Dell. We played around with it a bit today and it's true. We couldn't install Vista (got BSOD). Windows 7 installed but couldn't be activated That really had us puzzled. Then on trying to re-install XP we got more BSOD's.

The Vista was x64 Ultimate (I think), Windows 7 was both x86 Ultimate and x64 Ultimate. The XP was x86 Pro (2 attempts from 2 different discs) and 1 x64 Pro.

Anyone have a solution to this? Dell is no help - knowledge or speedwise - most likely they will have the usual response of "Bring it in and we'll re-install at X cost" and even then it'll take a month.

Anybody know of a fix for this? I'd prefer Windows 7 to run but XP will do fine. I have a sneaky suspicion the answer may lie somewhere in the BIOS. All help is greatly appreciated.

Every once in a while, and I particularly notice it when playing any game, the touchpad will suddenly freeze, or slow way down, and unless I stop for about 30 seconds, sometimes, longer, it just won't move. It can occasionally move on its own when this happens, and sometimes the mouse buttons won't work for a bit, too.

It's not dirty, and has done this since I bought it new. I have downloaded all the current drivers.

I am considering buying this computer. But after during considerable research I have a few questions.
Firstly, it has very high ratings in both Consumer Reports and every ratings website I have seen (Engadget, CNET, Laptop mag, PC World, Wall Street Journal, etc.). The average rating is 8.6.

I was disappointed when I saw the customer ratings. On Amazon 44% gave it one star (53% one or two stars). The majority of the complaints were about the poor trackpad, lousy wifi reception, and serious problems using the touch screen.
I should point out that these complaints are about the latest version which is the 9350. It came out in the latter part of 2015. The earlier version, the 9343, has much better customer ratings but the complaints are similar (trackpad, wifi, touch screen). Also, judging from the dates of the ratings websites reviews, some but not all, were for the 9343.
The 9343 has been discontinued by Dell but is still available for purchase elsewhere.

What initially attracted me, and still attracts me, to this computer is the 13" screen in an 11" body.

Can those of you with XPS 13 experience comment on this and on the difference between the 9343 and the 9350?

Hey all, my very first post here so sorry if this comes off terrible.

Basically, I have a dell xps 9100 that I upgraded with a new graphics card, new power source and a video recorder.

Everything has been going fine for several months now, then last night I notice that Windows 7 is going intensely slow, and no windows can be opened. I wasn't downloading anything, or even accessed to the internet at the time.

I started it into safe mode, ran some Anti virus stuff. Nothing, fine. Deal with in the morning.

I wake up for work what do I see but the "Strike f1 to retry boot" I blast the f1 button to no avail, reset it a bunch of times, finally I go through the set up at the beginning did a diagnostic run, Said my hard drive failed.

I open up the computer, made sure everything was connected. Now I can login into windows but I'm having the same problem as before.

This is my first 'new' computer and I was trying to take good care of her, any help would be MOST appreciated. Thanks

I have a Dell Dimension E510, with an ATI Radeon graphics card. Well a few weeks ago I came across the "Infinite Loop" problem, and Dell sent me a new video card. Now whenever I try to go on my computer there's lines and crap all over my screen. I've wiped out the hard drive twice and I'm very annoyed! What do I do? I tried installing the latest drivers but it didn't seem to work. I'm in safe mode right now, any tips?

A:Dell Display Problems - Help!

in safe mode is the best place to go. you need to open Device manager (a few ways to do this, best is to rightclick My computer and go to manage) then scan for new hardware. if it comes up negative, uninstall your card (yes, that's right, remove it from the list. It'll work bare-bones untill you reinstall it) go back onto normal mode, and do a scan for new hardware, windows should then install the correct drivers fo it. and it should be fine
