Windows Deployment Services error.

Q: Windows Deployment Services error.

I assume and hope this is the appropriate forum for this, even though it's for using WDS to deploy Windows XP SP2.  I installed WDS on one of our W2K3 R2 SP1 servers via the Windows Components window of Add / Remove Programs (I didn't use the downloaded Windows AIK package).  For the most part it seems I got everything setup and working fine.  I used the boot.wim image from the Windows Vista DVD to make my Capture boot image as well as Windows PE PXE boot environment image.  I successfully made my own custom install image and was even able to re-deploy it to the laptop which I made it from. Now enters my problem.  I have another laptop that's a similar model, but not the exact same.  When I go to image it I get this error after it gets into Windows PE:

WdsClient: An error occurred while communicating with the Windows Deployment Services server. Please check to ensure that the server is operational and that the necessary ports are open on the server's firewall.  Server name [wdsserver.domain.com], Server IP address [192.168.1.2].

I fired up the command prompt with shift+F10 and can ping the server just fine.  Also, ipconfig /all shows everything is functioning as it should, so http://support.microsoft.com/kb/923834/en-us doesn't seem relevant to my problem.  I couldn't find any other articles on this issue.  I also have the WDS server setup to accept any client... no client restrictions.I'm stumped as to what to do next.  I thought I had this thing all ironed out and working, but this laptop threw me a curveball.

First, whats the difference between WDS and MDT?

Second, do I have to have a Windows 2003 Server or can I set this up on a network with nothing but XP PRO machines?

Finally, If we buy 30 dell computers with xp pro already installed is it neccesary to even use WDS?

Just some background, we are trying to set up a network where some users are restricted from doing certain tasks on their computers and over the network while others have admin rights. I'm not sure if I have to start from scratch or just network the computers and then implement AD for group polices, etc.

Has anyone played around with server 2008 and Vista? I'm asking because I work in an IT department and I've been playing with the deployment services to upgrade our workstations to vista as our xp licenses expire in the fall. The computers are fully capable of running vista (Index scores of 4.7 to 5.2).

I know some of you may think i'm crazy, but the UAC, at least from an administration standpoint is the best thing microsoft came up with. UAC and Deepfreeze should make sure some likely idiot won't screw up my workstations... "Protect users from themselves"

Any tips, hints would be appreciated.

A:Windows deployment services + Vista

Hi Pbb321,
From what I have heard Vista workstations need a Vista License server (something to that affect) and if a vista workstation cannot contact that license server in a certain period of time the workstation gets removed from the domain automatically. I heard that Vista and server2008 take full advantages of SMB. Much faster file transfers than Server 2003 and XP Pro. I think if you read up on the licensing schemes you should be ok.

I have a WDS server locally and it works just fine. However, we have several remote locations that are connected through an MPLS. I am able to perform a Network Boot and access the WDS Server. Unfortunately, when I attempt to deploy the image across the MPLS, the installation takes way too long.

I would like to set up a share at each of my remote (MPLS) locations that the images can be pulled from. I want to avoid setting up a WDS Server at each location as it would be a mismanagement of resources for the number of people/PC's at the locations.

Is it possible to set up local shares at the remote locations and configure the WDS Server pull the images from those local shares?

Hello. I have an issue.

I want to capture an Linux OS custom image or a fresh one and want to use WDS to complete the job. Could it be done?

I know I can use WDS from server to deploy WIN 7 or anyother Win OS to other systems. But can I use the same service to deploy Linux OS to other new systems and how can I go around in capturing the Linux OS image.

I don't want to use any third party application to capture and deploy both WIN and Linux images. I can use SysPrep to capture Windows image, but how do I go about capturing Linux image?

Is there an in-built app for Linux to capture an image like SysPrep (for WIN)???

Please help.

I have configured a stand alone windows 2012 Std. OS with WDS, set up all the necessary items
loaded both the boot.wim and image.wim into wds server.
the system deploys the standatrd win7 Pro image without issue.
The problem comes when I try to use the image capture wizard.
The client laptop boots to pxe without issue I get the screen that  lets me choose  what I want to load
when I choose the capture image item it loads as normal,(as the deploy does except that all that happens is I get a black screen with a white arrow cursor. the screen never turns blue like you would expect and the image capture wizard never appears.
I have followed all of the steps on the WDS set up page for creating a image capture boot file however as I said it never appears.
Can someone assist?

Hi
I have a situation that the solution has been escaping me.  I have sysprep successfully a machine, create a WIM image and manage to redeploy it to 4 out of 6 machine successfully.  The last 2 however, prompted me with an error during the deployment.
Reviewing the setuperr.log file, the error is
2016-07-26 15:12:45, Error      [0x0f0082] SYSPRP LaunchDll:Failure occurred while executing 'C:\Windows\system32\capisp.dll,CryptoSysPrep_Specialize', returned error code 1627[gle=0x000003e5]

I looked online around the capisp.dll and I found a possibility of where the 2 machine had a different device configuration and the recommendation was to change my
PersistAllDeviceInstalls in my unattend.xml to false and have it rediscover the devices.  I did that but still the same outcome.
I have run out of ideas and I need help to move forward.  Please help.

Users of a Access db distributed with the Package Wizard are getting the
error "Can't assign a value to this object" when I try to set a value
through code. The value is a simple calculation. (A= B/C). I can't figure
out the problem mainly because I can't duplicate the error in the
development version. Even if I start it up with the /runtime the error
doesn't occur, the code works. Why does this error occur or how can I track it down if I
can't duplicate it in my system?

Thanks

Eddyed, how about sending yourself a copy?
It could be the error message has to do with their version of Access, have they got the full version or just runtime?

When I am running my deployment for Win7, the last couple systems have returned a memory error when going though the pre-application round of Windows Update. The error pauses the deployment and the system needs to be manually restated before it will continue.
When this error occurred before, I added a task to install SP1 before Windows Update ran. This no longer seems to be working sufficiently. Any ideas on how to solve this problem? My thought was to modify the ZTIWindowsUpdate file to only install a limited
number of updates in a given pass, but I have no idea how to do this.

Hello,

I've recently been trying to use Macrium Reflect free to create a Windows PE, and it always failed with an error (number 112).

So I went to Microsoft to do it manually, got the Windows ADK (verson 5) and installed it. Then, using the Deployment and Imaging Tools Environment as Administrator. Using the instructions provided here (WinPE: Add Packages (Optional Components Reference)) I got an error. I was going to add support for Bitlocker, but I didn't get that far.

Specifically, I typed in the following:
copype amd64 C:\WinPE_amd64
Dism /Mount-Image /ImageFile:"C:\WinPE_amd64\media\sources\boot.wim" /index:1 /MountDir:"C:\WinPE_amd64\mount"

After the second command, I got an error:

I have attached the log file (with the .log extension changed to .txt) for your viewing pleasure. The error in the file is posted here, too:

From what I have read about WinPE, you cannot run it from your Hard Drive, it will not run when Windows is operating.
You need to create a bootable USB or CD.

Hi,

These symptons and problem have started within the past week, without warning:

My laptop is now particularly slow, the mouse lags, as does the internet - especially videos and music starts. Also, there is a "service.exe" application error that occurs a split second before the computer turns off, so on the "windows is shutting down" screen. Consequently I'm an unable to read the error code.

I presume the services.exe error and the slowing down are related.

Any theories?

Thanks!

So the other day my computer was having issues booting. I have had one 1tb drive in it for a while. I started up the PC and it ran the bios and after that, it restarted. It continued to do that. So assuming that it wasn't going to boot, I went and put in my other hard drive I had laying around that I knew had an OS installed on it. Once I put that one in, I was able to boot off the first drive. It brought me to the menu after the bios to choose which one to boot off of, so I chose the first one, since I wanted to boot off of that one.

The first error I noticed was it told me my copy of windows was not genuine, and on that drive it was. However on the second drive I added to get it worked, it isn't, so that's not a big deal.

I was able to login and everything and all my files were there, except for the fact that I regularly get spammed with this message.
It will open 3-4 times in 1 second and then I close them all, and they'll come back like 5 minutes later and spam me with more. I don't know what caused that but I feel like it might be the same error that caused the hard drive to not independently boot.

A:How do i fix the message error Host Process for Windows Services

its could be one of a few things.

When vista came out a lot of people had the issue due to software that wasnt fully compatible/up to date.

Others have had the issue with ATI Control catalyst if you have an ATI card, update the software and drivers.

last but not least it could be dodgy ram, so do some memory tests.

OK, so I'm pretty good at troubleshooting computers especially networks and internet. Although I have 1 problem that's got me stumped. My girlfriend (computer illiterate) always shuts her PC down by just holding the power button. Well she finally messed it up and windows wouldnt boot. So I ran the XP repair console and fixed the boot so it worked again. Now everything is fine except her internet. The network card drivers are fine and it shows up working in the device manager however when I go into the control panel and click network connections it hangs for a few then tells me I don't have Network Connections enabled in my Windows Services. So I go into my services and scroll down to Network Connections and right click it and go to properties. I see that it is not started so I hit start and wham it hits me with the following error: "Error 126: The specified module could not be found." Also another thing to note is when I tried going to Run and trying to run ipconfig I get an error saying ipconfig was missing netman.dll which I know is a dll file that has to do with Network Connections. So any idea how I can get this fixed and get my girlfriends comp back online would be greatly appreciated, and thank you very much in advance!

Hi, my laptop wouldn't start up and came up with an error. I went back to windows when it was first purchased so I wouldn't lose my files too. Now when I start up it says "Setup is starting services" and after about 5 seconds it comes up with the error:
"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error.

Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation."

The problem is whenever I click "OK" and it restarts it just comes back with the same error. It used to be a different error, Windows could not complete the installation for some reason that I cant remember. That also put me in this boot loop.

I just want to find out how to fix this so I can go back to all my files that are very important. I cannot lose these files or my life will be over!

You should always back up your files externally as well as make your Recovery Disks or save a Backup Image, so that if Win7 becomes irreparable you can reimage it and put your files back.

Works through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot which include how to copy out your data externally which I would do first if you have data you cannot risk losing.

Hello. I am currently doing some minor tweaks to a friend's laptop that has Vista Home Premium loaded. The changes I made yesterday were as follows (and in this order): Uninstalled McAffee Security and installed MSE, uninstalled Abobe Reader and installed Foxit Reader, installed Firefox and downloaded a Windows update for Vista SP2. I'm almost positive that the error message appeared after the Windows update but can't be certain as I don't know how quickly the error message appears after the error has occured. The error message doesn't hinder performance but is annoying when it pops up. Can you please offer some advice/help on how to get rid of the error message. Thanks.

Hello,
Two days ago there was a virus on my computer, and I called Microsoft to remove it. But ever since then, I have noticed that my McAfee Verizon Internet security Suite Firewall does not stay on. It may appear on in the home window, but when you want to go into firewall settings, it says that it is off and when you try turning it on, it turns off again immediately.

Also, the Windows Firewall does not turn on. An error always pops up that says :
Window's firewall can't change some of your settings. Error code: 0x80070424

When I go into Windows Services, I also can not find the Windows Firewall on the list.

I believe the virus removed the windows firewall and also affected the McAfee firewall. Even though the win 7 security virus is removed, its affects have still lingered.

When I called Microsoft to remove the virus, and asked about the firewall problem, they said to contact McAfee. I've called McAfee and they have not been able to help me. They said they would research more on the matter and call me back, but they haven't. I am considering changing my Antivirus to Norton very soon.
Please help!

So I have Windows 7 64 bit on my HP HDX 18, and I did a FRESH install, I did not upgrade. Now I'm trying to install iTunes 9.0.2 64 bit and it starts to install and gets to the part of "Starting Services..." and then comes up with an error saying "service 'apple mobile device' (apple mobile device) failed to start. verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services".

I've tried many times to delete everything of apple's and itunes from my computer thoroughly, rebooted, and tried again. But I keep getting the same error time after time, I've even tried the Windows 7 32 bit iTunes and it's the same thing.

Can anyone help?

Can someone help me? I have always had good luck in this forum with talented people helping me troubleshoot.

Microsoft's KDB has NOTHING that is helping me with the below window log file. I first noticed a change when my Window's Desktop Search application wasn't indexing anything...then my Outlook 2007 search wasn't indexing. I went to the Microsoft Update website to see if maybe I needed to install updates and then I get the error message. I checked BITS and it is running..RPC is running, however, Cryptographic Services is NOT running and I get this error message when I try to start it: Could not stat the Cryptographic Services service on Local Computer
Error 193: 0xc1. Also, the Windows Firewall is unable to be started as well. I get another error message when trying to start it.

I ran a virus definitions update along with a full system scan with Norton and nothing was found.

Any suggestions?? I've already unregistered and re registered a million dll files through cmd and that didn't help either. I don't have any other third party software installed to detect spyware or adaware. I'm running on Windows XP service pack 3

I have installed a Windows 7 Enterprise reference image. I have added a Windows 7 boot image on my WDS server and created a capture image, I have added the Ethernet and the storage driver to the boot image. When I PXE boot the refernce computer with the

Any idears?

Hi,
I consider this issue can be caused if the driver you added into boot image fail to install.

Please try the suggestions in this article:

1. After the completion of the OS deployment with 0 errors. The computer restart, but it hangs at a black screen with the mouse cursor.
2. Some computers have the same problem as in 1 but after sveral days of use. (3 to 4)
Please note that we have in the out of the box drivers several models of DEll laptops.
Is someone out there that knows what could be the cause of these issues?

Hi everyone,
i know the internet is full of guides and tutorials but i haven't got what i'm looking for.
My situation is as follows:
Our corporation buys oem licensed windows 7 computers from our suppliers.
we would like to create an image with icd , without overwriting the product keys (since we don't buy volume keys, paying 2 times seems a little stupid aswell). We would like the icd image to join the domain under a variable name (something like desktop01
- desktop02 etc ...).Also it should be able to enable the built in local administrator and disable any other local user besides domain users.

within this icd image i would like to add other applications aswell (symantec antivirus, citrix, adobe reader, office365, etc...).
Is this possible ? if so could anyone guide me to a fairly easy guide where i can do all this stuff?

What software can I use to create a customized W10 DVD that allows me to alter/disable some of the standard initial setup questions?

We pay for an OVS agreement, should I be able to get a copy of Windows 10 from the VLSC? I cant seem to find a Windows 10 ISO, just 7 & 8?

For the past several days my computer has been completely useless. It generally has been indicating ("C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe" terminated unexpectedly), error code -1073741482. (I'm typing this from another computer, fyi).

I have tried a few things. I was going to install McAfee Total Protection to see if that would clean it up, but McAfee would not install completely because of some sort of problem apparently.

I am able to get into Safe Mode and have burned combofix to a CD on another computer, and was hoping to run it on my infected(?) computer to see if that would help, but see that the instructions say to post here first.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I had trouble updating the MSE definitions a couple of days ago and I tried everything to get it to update, something about no connection. I gave up and uninstalled MSE completely using Revo. From Microsoft's web site, I downloaded and installed the newest version of MSE and the definitions updated just fine. Finally, the action center red flag is gone. However, a couple of days later, an alert comes back. This time, it's notifying me that Windows Security Center Service is turned off. With the Action Center open, I clicked "turn on now" but nothing happens, Security Center remains off.
I go to Run-services.msc and scroll down to Security Center and double click on it. Service status says "stopped". I click start and get the message, "Windows could not start the Security Center Service on local computer. Error 5: Access is denied.
This is all done from an administrator account.
Why wasn't I able to update MSE definitions and why, after a reinstall of a perfectly working MSE, am I now unable to turn on Security Center Services?

Hi,

I have a question about deploying windows (multicasting) over a network that I’m hoping someone with the expertise will be able to offer a little advice on...

I work for a small PC manufacturer in the UK, and at the moment we are installing windows on to the machines using a USB3 hard drive with disk imaging software (Acronis). Our company is currently expanding and has just become a Microsoft partner, so my employer has asked me to look into setting up an image server and deploying windows over a network connection.

What I’d like to know is: what kind of infrastructure would I need to put in place to execute this task effectively?

My work place is relatively small. The install bench only has 8 bays - so for the moment this will be the maximum number of PC’s that will need to receive the broadcast. In time, I expect we will have to relocate into larger premises, so the solution has to be scalable. Time is also a huge factor at the moment. I would like the network to be as fast as possible, whilst still being economical with costs.

From what I understand, the server would have to have quite a lot of processing power; a lot of memory; fast hard drive access, and a fast ethernet connection. I was thinking something along the lines of an i7 2600k overclocked to 4.5Ghz / 16GB 1600mhz memory / Multiple SSD’s in raid 5 or 10 array, and a gigabit network card. How does that spec sound for the task? A networking switch would also be required. Do you have any recommendat... Read more

A:Windows deployment over a network

Having set up a Ghost type environment, you'll need to do a few things. First, you need to have your PC's PXE enabled. PXE support is going to be relevant to the NICs you are using. If you don't have PXE ability with the NICs you use with your PCs, then everything else is a no go. Next, you need a DHCP server and you need to set one of the DHCP boot parameters, I think it is type 60 (can't remember at the moment), to point the PXE client to the boot image server on your network. The boot image server is responsible for providing a small boot strap to allow the PC to come up with an OS. The boot image server also provides extra parameters to do a network map to the image server to load the actual image onto the PC. The last component is the image server which holds the image itself and pushes it to the client. All of these components can be a single box.

Depending on your network design and where you place the image server in relation to where you image your boxes, you might have to invoke a relay agent to forward DHCP requests to the DHCP server through a routed hop.

As far as hardware, the biggest impact on image performance is hard drive subsystem on the image server and the network itself.

I have a licensing question regarding the deployement of Windows 7.

We are currently purchasing notebooks that have an OEM key for Windows 7 Pro and have been configuring each by hand which can get really annoying. I want to create an image of Windows 7 and use it for deployement however I'm not too sure about the licensing involved.

First off, you cannot image an OEM version and you need an open license version, correct?

Do I need to purchase a VLK license for each notebook that I want to image to? Or can I just purchase 1 open license and image that to multiple computers since the OEM key is in fact for Windows 7 Professional?

A:Image Deployment of Windows 7

I believe you're going to need to look into VLK if you're intending on using the same key & installation across multiple machines. You "may" be able to get away with buying one 7Pro and then inserting the individual OEM key that is on the individual laptop stickers, however I'm not sure on that one so don't quote me there. I'm sure someone else here does know this answer though so sit tight, some one else will surely be able to answer this.

Aside from the licensing issues, once you get the version of Windows that you'll be installing legally with a licensed key, you should look into windows sysprep. It will cut your distribution time down incredibly using this method rather than setting up each machine individually from scratch.

I would like to multi-boot Windows 7, Slackware (a Linux distro), a WIM installer for Windows (accessible via EasyBCD), and a floppy image installer for Slackware (also accessible via EasyBCD.)

I currently have this working, and a basic outline of my partition layout follows:
Disk 1
-MBR: Windows 7 bootmgr
-Partition 1: Windows 7
-Partition 2: Windows Installer WIM and Sources

Disk 2
-Partition 1: LILO and Slackware
-Partition 2: Swap Partition
-Partition 3: Personal Data Files
-Partition 4: Slackware Installer

Windows does some things while partitioning that I don't like (including seeing 500 MB less on my disc than is there, leaving unused space in the table which was odd to see.) I plan to use a utility on my Slackware installation to rectify that, but once I delete my Windows 7 partition I will have no way to reinstall Windows (as I will lose the MBR data pointing to the WIM installer.) I've been using Windows for about six months, but haven't used Slackware in almost a year and am not ready to dive back into it without a backup OS.

Suffice it to say I don't have media to make installation discs or usb sticks. (Since I know it seems like I'm trying to crack a wallnut with a sledgehammer. Or rather, use a sledgehammer to crack a walnut as use a sledgehammer to... Read more

The simplest way to handle multi-booting with separate HD's is to install/repair with the other HD unplugged, then boot only via the BIOS boot order or one-time BIOS Boot Menu key.

If you do this then you don't need to worry about reimaging Win7 HD as it will contain its own boot files and not be interlocked or reliant upon the other HD, or vice versa. Just be sure to unplug the other HD during reinstall, repair or reimaging.

As to how to boot the other HD's multi-boots you can use GRUB for Linux which works better when it is restricted to Linux distros and not imposed on Win7.

Does this sound like a way to simplify what you want to do?

I don't think this has ever happened before (I've had the laptop for about 8 months), but I did install HP printer software a few days ago. I downloaded the latest vista driver for the printer from Hewlett Packard's website, everything installed fine, and the software updated itself automatically to the latest version, so I don't know if it's printer-related.

I'm looking for some kind of "official" Microsoft documentation or TechNet article explaining the proper process for injecting Windows Updates / Hotfixes into a Windows WIM image to allow me to deploy a version of windows that already has all (or at least
most) of the current windows updates.
Does anyone know if such a document exists? Or perhaps someone from Microsoft can respond to this post with some well documented steps on how I would accomplish this?
Thanks!

A:Windows Update / Hotfix Injection into Windows 7 WIM image for Deployment

Process
WSUS Offline Tool

Download the WSUS Offline Tool and extract to another working directory, e.g. "C:\wsusoffline"
Run the "UpdateGenerator.exe" tool.
Select the version of Windows you wish to update, e.g. "x64 Global" under the Windows 7 category.
Optionally select to use a WSUS server on your local network with the "WSUS..." button.

Press the "Start" button. A command window will appear displaying the progress of the utility. The updates are downloaded to the "./client/w61-x64/glb" directory within the "wsusoffline"
folder.
The Windows 7 Media

Download the Windows Automated Installation Kit for Windows 7 and
install. This will allow you to obtain the "DISM.exe" command line utility that is needed.
Extract all files from the Windows 7 media. Store these files in a working directory, e.g. "C:\Win7_x64_Ent_Source"
Create a temp directory that will be used to mount the WIM image to in order to manipulate the files, e.g. "C:\Win7_x64_Ent_WIM"
Open an elevated command prompt.
Run the follow command to mount the WIM file:

dism /mount-wim /wimfile:C:\Win7_x64_Ent_Source\sources\install.wim /mountdir:C:\Win7_x64_Ent_WIM /index:1

You can determine the index number of the image you need to mount by running the "dism /get-wiminfo" command.

Hi
I have installed MDT 2013, AIK and WDS on a Server 2012 R2 VM. I have created my deployment shares and Task sequences and everything seems to be ok. When i try to Sysprep and capture a Windows 7 machine by browsing to the deployment share, scripts folder
and then clicking on the LiteTouch.vbs, the windows 7 machine reboots after checking for updates and then the Deployment Wizard is blank, so i cannot continue or see any options. Has anyone seen this before? The windows 7 reference machine is a VM if that
helps.

Hi,

I am wondering if someone can assist. I have purchased a Toshiba R40 laptop for the school i work for as the previous model laptops are end of life span. I have purhcased the Satellite Pro R40-C but i am not able to image this with Windows 7 or Windows 10 using WDS.

My problem is adding the drivers using WDS fails. I have tried the official drivers from Toshiba website and intel website for the Satellite Pro R40. I have used the DISM command to inject the drivers manually but when commecing the deployment it fails as it says there's no dhcp server available. By pressing shft and f10 i can tell that it's not getting an ip address which is causing the issue. Even though i have manually embed the drivers to the boot.wim. I have tried all the network drivers available from intel and Toshiba for this model. I have also installed win10 from disk and installed the drivers and extracted them and injected them also. For some reason this model laptop won't allow WDS with Windows 10 Edu 64 bit image. I have a variety of other model laptops and they all work with a win10 image.

I am able to use the same drivers and load them with a USB each time when the WDS deployment cycle begins and this seems to work but is there anyway i can make the R40 drivers work with the boot image. I have copied fresh boot.wim from windows 10 to make sure its not the boot.wim that is corrupt. Toshiba support are advising to do the deployment with a USB stick but this is not practical and... I am familiar with Windows ADK, DISM, and also Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) as well.
Also, I have used PowerShell a lot to do some custom Windows 10 deployment solutions in enterprise network environments.
Now I am looking for an alternative to the MVA Windows 10 Deployment Training that will go

Hi.

I'm creating a new domain and I want to be able to design a start screen and quickly put it on every machine I build. I would like the end users to customise the start screen to their own preference afterwards.

I've looked at the "start screen layout" group policy which would be ideal, but it locks the start screen and prevents user changes.

Anyone know any way around this or alternative tips or tricks? Need it solving quickly, as always!

Hello
I have inherited my environment and am trying to understand what the previous tech did to set up our windows deployment the way he did.

I have a winpe boot usb.
When I boot to it, runs a file called startnet.ps1 (powershell). I am then prompted for my admin credentials.
It then prompts me for an image on our network (WIM file). I can browse the the wim files from anywhere and I can select Win 7, 8.1, 10 (Enterprise licenses).
It asks what disk I want to install on.
It asks me for a drivers folder to install drivers for that specific model of computer or laptop (on the network).
It asks if it is an unattended install or not
It finally asks to confirm.

It then begins to install the OS, drivers etc and prompts for nothing.

I have looked at the boot USB, but cannot find anywhere where it is saying to go to a specific place on our network; or even the name of the network.

But it all works flawlessly.

Can anyone suggest as to how this was done? I'd like to learn to duplicate this going forward.

Thank You

Terry

As Joe mentioned in this blog post, the amount of interest in the Windows 10 preview has been phenomenal. We appreciate that IT pros are trying out the new features and providing feedback. But more importantly, we appreciate the sheer number of devices that you are upgrading from previous versions of Windows ? whether from Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1. The telemetry from these upgrades enables us to further streamline and improve the upgrade process ? important because this is the primary way we expect organizations to deploy Windows 10.

In my blog post on September 30th, we introduced this idea of having a simpler deployment process, using an in-place upgrade instead of the traditional wipe-and-load approach that organizations have historically used to deploy new Windows versions. This upgrade process is designed to preserve the apps, data, and configuration from the existing Windows installation, taking care to put things back the way they need to be after Windows 10 has been installed on the system.

Of course it?s critical that at the same time we do everything we can to ensure that existing apps ?just work.? We understand the challenges that many organizations experienced as part of their Windows XP to Windows 7 migrations, and are working hard to ensure that compatibility between Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10 is excellent. This also applies to hardware: we are designing Windows 10 to have the same ov... Read more

Hi all,

I've recently started in a new job as an ICT technician. I'm working with a system admin at a local school.

In previous jobs I've always used a "gold image" to deploy out to machines. In the new job there is no such thing unfortunately, making new installs a long drawn out affair (lots of additional software installs. Office, Visio, custom programs etc)

I have some spare time on my hands soon, so was thinking of creating a standard image that I can deploy (just via USB) to new machines that need to be imaged.

I already have a WinPE boot disk and understand the concept of sysprep and configuring in audit mode after a clean install (this will be my approach) I will probably then use CloneZilla to image the final product and deploy onto single machines where needed.

... I have a few questions!

1. How should I handle Windows updates? These are normally pushed out via WSUS - Some things should *not be installed* latest IE for example. WSUS is only pushing out IE9 due to some compatibility issues with sites that are currently used (there may be other updates that are not installed, but I'm not 100%) - What would be the best approach here? Not using the standard Windows update before I sysprep, or joining the domain, installing updates via wsus, then leaving the domain and running a sysprep?

2. Being as all the machines will be the same make and model, would it be worth including drivers into the mix, or will they be removed with sysprep? I be... Read more

A:Windows 7 Enterprise Deployment & WSUS

Don't have time to answer all your questions, but I can tell you that you do not need to join the domain to use WSUS, just configure the proper settings either in Group Policy or in the registry directly. Having them part of the domain only aids in mass configuration.

got an issue hoping to find some help. I am attempting to deploy a VPN connection during a task sequence SCCM OSD deployment. I can get it to drop the PBK file in to the app data folder in either user or programdata however I need it to come up as shared and accessible at log in thus enabling off site log in to the domain using the VPN for first log in. We are using Windows 7 64 bit and SCCM 2012 r2.  After copy the VPN does exist and is listed in rasphone however doesn't appear in network connections..  If there is a script I can use to create the connection that would be fine I am just not sure how to do that being I need it to be shared/available at log in.

I am also in need of a script that will set a computer name using WMI identifying number/serial number.  I am not running MDT in conjunction with SCCM.  So gather is not an option OSDcomputername doesn't seem to work.  Currently I have this but it errors out (shown in bold)

I think your main problem is with the different systems. With having different systems you will aquire driver issues when pushing an image to these systems. Usually with different systems you need an image for each one.

I currently use RIS. It works quite well but is trouble some to get working. RIS uses an answer file that inputs all interactive data (productkey, company name, time, etc.).
I have also used Ghost. The biggest issue we have run into with Ghost is it will duplicate the host machine exactly. The problem with that is it also duplicates the SID of the host machine. As most people know this will not work in a AD domain environment. Thus the reason we went with RIS.

License keys (how would one go about customising individual workstations to contain unique keys from a master build)

Normally you would need a VLK (volume license key).

Your biggest issue will be your different machines. Unless you decide to replace them all with the same, It would probably be easier to install the environment individually.

Hi There,

I found this forum thru KariTheFinn's YouTube Videos which are superb! My first post is a problem that hunts me since quite some time now. I startet too more or less ignore it since it was only a problem with one program. But since I switch mail clients it's now also a problem there. But first things first.

I have a Hyper-V Service running on my Windows 10 Machine for toying around. In there I was trying to create my personal perfect Windows 10 Installation with all the Apps, Tools, Settings, etc. I like and want. I did all of this in my created user account Yves. So all the settings from many apps (for example Chrome) are in this user profile. After I was done. I shutdown the Hyper-V Machine Boot up the WindowsPE.iso. And dism the complete machine to a mapped network drive. Than I created a new Hyper-V Machine booted directly into WindowsPE.iso. Diskpartet the complete system like I like. 100MB EFI. 1GB Rescue. 50GB System Partition. Dism the image back to the System Partition and bcdbooted the System Partition. Bootet up and tada System is "almost" like I left it before on the other VM. Only thing missing are for example Chrome extensions and settings. Which I can not figure out why this happens? Newly since I moved from em Client to Outlook 2016. Also Outlook 2016 does not like the dism'ing around. It says .ost file has to be deleted.

Anyone an idea why this is happening and how I can prevent it?

Thanks for your help guys.

Cheers,
Yves

Hi All,
Been pulling my hair out for months working with this OS and MDT. I'm creating a master image (Golden) on a virtual machine and when the software for our organization is installed, and a test user logs into the Virtual machine for the first time, Cortana and search are disabled. Logs also show errors with initializing "Search". Here are my image build steps:
-Install OS, log into machine with default Administrator account
-Create a local administrator account. Log off of "built-In" admin account.
-Log in with "new" local administrator account.
-Install updates. Rename and join computer to domain
-Log into VM with a default domain account (Used to customize apps for domain users). Install and configure apps.
-Log off domain account. Log in with "new" local admin account
-Copy domain user account profile to the "Default" profile. Use regedit to load "Default" hive. Remove references of domain account"
-Remove domain account SID and user folder.
-Remove VM from domain
-Sysprep, and Shutdown.
When I use a domain joined account to log into the VM, Cortana and Search is disabled. When I log into the machine as the newly created "Admin" account. Search and Cortana work as expected. For some reason it seems to be permissions related to the "Apps" folder, but Im not sure. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello,

I had asked this question on TechNet was directed here.   A user thought perhaps I would find better support at the MSDN forums.

I have a fully updated Windows 7 image that has drivers slipstreamed in it for a customer's PC.   I used DISM to slipstream the drivers.   I used WAIK to create an autounattend.xml answer file.    When 7 is installed using this image, it
creates three partitions.   The first is a 500MB primary partition that I call System Reserved.   This is the active partition.   The second is a 14GB Recovery partition and the third is a 133GB OS partition.

I would like it when the image gets deployed, it sets up the Recovery partition to hold the recovery information.   That way, if the OS partition or System Reserved partition get damaged, the user can still fully recover their system.   I know how
to configure the system so when the user presses F10, it should start the recovery partition.   However, it errors out about BOOTMGR missing.   I believe the BCD Store is configured incorrectly.   BCDEdit /ENUM ALL shows stuff pointing to the
OS's partition's \Recovery directory and the WinRE.wim file.

I want it so when the user uses the recovery partition, it deletes the OS partition and the system reserved partition and recreates them, without deleting the recovery partition.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can accomplish this?  I do have to admit that I don't... Read more

Getting the message after Sysprep stating "Sysprep Fails After Deployment With: Windows could not finish configuring the system...."

This is a new out-of-box Lenovo T530 laptop, it came pre-loaded with Windows 7 Pro.

I pulled laptop from box and inserted our Windows 7 Pro SP 1 disk and installed our copy. I then configured all settings and applications under "audit mode", created an "Unattend.xml" file using the WSIM, and copied that file into the Sysprep folder and ran "Sysprep /shutdown /oobe /generalize /unattend:unattend.xml"

The error message appears after I image drive using Ghost GSS 11.5.1.2266. (I'm assuming the error would appear after boot-up regardless of imaging the machine)

I have read numerous articles regarding this error and have also disabled the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" as suggested by many. I'm also assuming that the "Hotfix" for this issue does not apply since I am installing SP1.

I am able to boot into the machine after attempting to boot into "safe mode" first (as suggested by many users), however once in, it looks as if the XML file is completely ignored.
Could it be related to the SSD drive in these laptops?

A:Sysprep Fails After Deployment With: Windows could not finish configur

So I decided to completely reinstall Win 7 Pro, add drivers needed and Sysprep using the same Unattend.xml file I created, it now comes back with an error after sysprep stating it doesn't like the "amd64_Microsoft-Windows-Shell-Setup__neutral" pass under "specialize".

It then states it has to reboot and when it does it comes back with an error about "unexpected error" and "windows installation cannot proceed" and to "restart the installation"??

I did manage to Shift+F10 into a command prompt and copy the "setupact.log" and the "setuperr.log" from the "C:\Windows\Panther" folder, it seems to complain about a product key which is not listed in the xml file, so not sure whats up with that.

Since late last night, I've been getting a Generic Host Process for Win32 Services Error pop-up after about a half hour of browsing the Internet. Originally, if I ignored it or clicked "Do Not Send" (as it appeared as an error report message), my Internet would stop working until I rebooted. However that quickly went away, and was replaced by instead changing my taskbar to a strange, low-resolution version. This still happens, but it corrects itself over time if not instantly. After I received the pop-up while using IE, I would intermittently be either redirected to a random website, or a new tab would open with the website instead. I didn't write down the names of these sites as I simply closed the tabs when they opened to prevent them from loading completely. But, after an hour or so of using Internet Explorer, it began crashing after a few seconds of being run. EDIT: DDS report keeps getting cut off for some reason... Guess that the DDS is too big? Hi,
Using Windows System Image Manager.
I believe I am doing something wrong since the whole deployment is working perfectly with the unattended XML etc.. although I can't figure out it for the 'Select the operating system you want to install' option, it is the only thing that pops up when I install
Windows...

I've tried: Microsoft-Windows-Deployment-Services/ImageSelection as such:
Filename: install.wim
ImageGroup: Windows (The WDS Group I created?)
ImageName: Windows 7 PROFESSIONAL (The Image name exactly how it is in WDS?)

I also tried adding Microsoft-Windows-Setup/ImageInstall/OSImage/InstallFrom/MetaData with help on the web but I am obviously either not inputting the correct string/value or choosing the correct option.

Hope I didn't explain it awfully.

Many thanks,

B.Spendlove

EDIT: I also noticed something on the web that might be worth mentioning. I am currently using SetupUILanguage and others to en-GB but when I get to the above screen, it notes at the bottom left en-US... I'll try to change language and see what happens :)

I've been running disk and system maintenance on my computer, and sfc found some corruption it couldn't repair. It looks like it's .NET framework 4 that has the errors, so I uninstalled it and its updates, then reinstalled it and updated it, but the problem remains. Since that didn't solve it, I'm not sure if that's where the problem is or what to do about it. Anyone know which files I need to look at before I resort to doing an upgrade/repair installation?

Hello All,

First, I hope this is in the correct forum/section. If not - Moderators - Sorry!

I am currently looking for a solution for customizing windows images and then automating the deployment/Out-of-box Experience (OOBE) for the business I work for. I have done some research for what is available, but so far I find the Microsoft solutions to be complicated or not quite what I need. I have done a bit of exploration with Microsoft Windows Automated Installation Kit (WAIK) and Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT), but found that WAIK is a bit too complicated, and I don't believe MDT will suit our needs.

Here is a bit of background information to familiarize you with our environment/needs:

Customization:

-Currently we are taking the factory Dell image that comes with the laptops and customizing it to our needs by uninstalling bloatware and installing our default applications. We are also customizing the image by configuring power settings, screen saver settings, IE homepage, etc. To do this, we are currently forced to use local group policy, which disables the option to let the user change said settings. Currently, we do not have our domain environment setup with the proper OUs to use domain group policy. Therefore, we are using local group policy as a temporary solution. Once all of these settings are set, we create a backup image of the system before using sysprep, then we sysprep the box and create another image before booting the system again so that we can in... A:During deployment :windows installation cannot continue because a required driver could not be installed

Hi,
I suggest we doing shift+f10, and type diskpart and lisk disk to see whether all HDD work as expected.
If not, please check the driver for Storage.
In addition, would you please let me know where did this image file come from, you captured yourself or got from installation disc.

Keep post. Kate Li

Hi,
Not really sure where to post this question so if there's a better forum just let me know.
We bought a new HP Color LaserJet Pro M452dn printer and I set it up today.  Installed it on my printer server and set it to deploy using group policy.  Seems to be working fine on our Windows 7 desktops but I have a Windows 8.1 workstation and
it isn't deploying.
Since it is the day after patch Tuesday I decided to run Windows Updates and interestingly enough the printer shows up as an Important Update.  Ok, so I tell it to install but it fails with an error code of 80070490.
Searched for help with that error found a few suggestions, running sfc and dism, but so far none of that has helped.  I also tried deleting the port thinking since I had used it in the past it may need to recreate it, didn't help.
So I'm stumped, I've rebooted the computer dozens of times, even turned it off for a while, no help.  I even manually installed the printer to see if having the drivers pre-loaded would help but it didn't.
Any suggestions?  Anyone run into this issue before?
Thanks in advance,
Linn

I am a network administrator using MDT 2013 to roll out Windows 8.1 machines to my organization.  The process is working well.  The issue I'm having is that after the machine is imaged, each user that logs into the machine and tries to use a webpage
in IE 11 that utilizes DOM storage doesn't work as expected.  The Developer Tools indicate that there is a "SCRIPT5: Access is Denied" on a line that tries to store something in the 'localStorage' object via JavaScript.  This page
will work on other browsers, and on other Windows 8.1 computers that are running IE11 with the same internet options set.  After googling, I found this page: https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/ie/en-US/066767a5-f9d5-45f4-95cf-dcd0ff030090/script5-access-is-denied-error-when-accessing-web-sites-using-localstorage
and this one: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie10-windows_7/ie10-script5-access-is-denied/e87bdb30-7f2a-4510-bfa3-a22b995f777b Which both point to a problem with the %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\ folder not having correct Integrity settings.

I had to use Process Monitor to determine where the computer was attempting to create the DOMStorage folder, because it wasn't in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\LocalLow\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\DOMStore, like the linked articles indicated, but rather in %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Microsoft\Windows\AppCache.

Troubleshooting this with icacls, I see that the correct line appears on the 'Lo... Read more

64 bit emachines desktop PC running Home Premium, direct wire connection to a modem.

It boots normally, it just doesn't connect to the internet. Many of the services are disabled.

I have done a startup repair with and without a disk (the CD we have is NOT from emachines - it's a standard Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit disk. The repairs never find a problem. I have done an sfc /scannow. No intefgrity violations were detected.

When I run services.msc I see that DHCP Client is not running. When I attempt to start it, I get that it could not start because the dependency service or group failed to start. If I go to properties and click on Dependencies I get a Win32 error - the service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

I get the exact behavior when I try to start DNS Client.

There are no restore points available. There are no viruses or malware according to TDSSKiller, Malwarebytes and ComboFix. When I try to use Internet Explorer I get the 'page cannot be displayed' . When I then click on 'Diagnose Connection Problems', I get 'Troubleshooting Couldn't Identify the Problem.'

There's about 50GB worht of music and videos on this PC and the idea of saving all that externally, plus the drivers, reinstalling and putting everything back is a lot of time and work.

I was looking for something that used to be available in Windows XP, where you'd pop in the CD, boot from it, hit enter to do an insta... Read more
