How to update a deployment task sequence to reflect an imported reference image

Q: How to update a deployment task sequence to reflect an imported reference image

Hello,
If I have a reference image that I capture through a regular sysprep & capture task sequence, how do I update my deployment task sequence to reflect this updated reference image once it has been captured? I would prefer not to have to recreate the deployment
task sequence as the current one has several customizations that I would have to redo. When I try to change the OS in the "Install Operating System" step in the sequence to point to the updated image, the deployment will fail with a message such
as: Windows could not parse or process the unattend answer file for pass [specialize]
I don't know how to tell if this is a problem with the unattend file itself or having something to do with changing the deploying operating system in the task sequence.

We currently have a task sequence set up for deploying Windows 7 Pro. We have updated the image and captured it. We had previously made quite a few configurations to the task sequence and would like to know if we can simply delete the current image in
the control folder for that sequence and replace it with an updated one? This would save time in configuring a new task sequence all over again. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hello,
We have an MDT 2013 SP1 deployment sequence set up for Windows 7 and a range of various laptop models. The issue I am about to describe seems to happen randomly on various models.
The task sequence gets all the way to the first autologin step and just stays on the desktop not doing anything. At this point the final tasks are executed and the summary screen appears, but nothing happens.
I am not able to open anything as i am prompted by a "Windows Security" dialog saying:
These files can't be opened: Your internet security settings prevented one or more files from being opened.
This message appears if i try to run any executable. None of the usual MDT logs are there and I cannot figure out what is stopping the sequence from completing. I have found some references to Windows Defender online but not much info on this problem out
there.

Hi all:

I know I can do a script like this to create an admin user account:

net user LocalAdminUsername LocalAdminPassword /passwordchg:no /expires:never /add
net localgroup Administrators LocalAdminUsername /addHowever, is there a way I can customize the password. For example, what if I wanted the password to include information about the computer name or serial number, for example? How can I set a password variable first and then incorporate it into the process (which I could mimic for the username if I desired)?

I'm looking for some kind of "official" Microsoft documentation or TechNet article explaining the proper process for injecting Windows Updates / Hotfixes into a Windows WIM image to allow me to deploy a version of windows that already has all (or at least
most) of the current windows updates.
Does anyone know if such a document exists? Or perhaps someone from Microsoft can respond to this post with some well documented steps on how I would accomplish this?
Thanks!

A:Windows Update / Hotfix Injection into Windows 7 WIM image for Deployment

Process
WSUS Offline Tool

Download the WSUS Offline Tool and extract to another working directory, e.g. "C:\wsusoffline"
Run the "UpdateGenerator.exe" tool.
Select the version of Windows you wish to update, e.g. "x64 Global" under the Windows 7 category.
Optionally select to use a WSUS server on your local network with the "WSUS..." button.

Press the "Start" button. A command window will appear displaying the progress of the utility. The updates are downloaded to the "./client/w61-x64/glb" directory within the "wsusoffline"
folder.
The Windows 7 Media

Download the Windows Automated Installation Kit for Windows 7 and
install. This will allow you to obtain the "DISM.exe" command line utility that is needed.
Extract all files from the Windows 7 media. Store these files in a working directory, e.g. "C:\Win7_x64_Ent_Source"
Create a temp directory that will be used to mount the WIM image to in order to manipulate the files, e.g. "C:\Win7_x64_Ent_WIM"
Open an elevated command prompt.
Run the follow command to mount the WIM file:

dism /mount-wim /wimfile:C:\Win7_x64_Ent_Source\sources\install.wim /mountdir:C:\Win7_x64_Ent_WIM /index:1

You can determine the index number of the image you need to mount by running the "dism /get-wiminfo" command.

I'm trying to insert an image into a slide. I used Insert -> Pictures (not simply copy/paste). The colors look quite obviously worse: they're all darker. It's not even a photograph, just a schematic with very few colors. Why is this happening? I think there's some kind of image compression going on that PowerPoint does automatically. I'm using Office 365 Pro Plus. Anyone know how to fix it?

EDIT: Ugh, I tried uploading the screenshot to the thread directly but apparently it gets compressed because the resolution is smaller, and the colors look the same in the images. I uploaded to a hosting site, but again, I think they also do some kind of compression because the difference in colors is less obvious than when I view it on my screen.

Nevertheless here it is (click the zoom in to see it):

color comparison ppt ? Postimage.org

A:Why do the colors of my image get worse when imported into PowerPoint?

colors look the same to me on both. The issue may be because the elements are made up of dots, like a halftone image, and the uploaded one is compressed and losing some of the dots in compression.

Hi All, new to the forum,

Has anyone had any joy using the DISM image deployment tool,

below is the message i get trying to capture an image

DISM doesn't recognise the command-line option "d:\thinimage.wim"

I've tried the below.

dism /capture-image /capturedir:f:\ /imagefile "d:\thinimage.wim" /name:"MyCompany"

I've checked this over and over and i'm defiantly following the line they require.... any ideas? Thanks.

A:Win 8 Image Deployment

I know nothing about DISM, so please check what I say first...

...but looking at the format of the command line, I wonder if there should be a colon after /imagefile?

so replace
dism /capture-image /capturedir:f:\ /imagefile "d:\thinimage.wim" /name:"MyCompany"

with
dism /capture-image /capturedir:f:\ /imagefile:"d:\thinimage.wim" /name:"MyCompany"

Hi,

I did a search for horizontal text but nothing comes up; hopefully you can help:

I've imported a few images into Visio 2003. Anytime I type out a description the text only appears within the borders of the image.

For example,
I'd like the text to go from left to right
J
Smile

But it only goes within the image and down, never across past the borders of the image.
J
s
m
i
l
e

I’ve attempted to edit the text trying to eliminate the issue but nothing works.
Of course when i add a shape from Visio this does not happen.
I made a new share, copied my image to the stencil, saved it and still no luck
I did a side by side of a Visio shape and my imported image but matching all the settings did not help
Thank you!

A:Solved: Visio 2003, How to type horizontal text for an imported image

I was able to figure it out; you’d need to make sure the text is highlighted, click the Windows menu, and Show shape sheet. In the shapes sheet window look for Text Transform and adjust the settings accordingly. I used the settings from a Visio shape and it worked.

Hope this help others as it was hard to find an answer to this online.

I have a licensing question regarding the deployement of Windows 7.

We are currently purchasing notebooks that have an OEM key for Windows 7 Pro and have been configuring each by hand which can get really annoying. I want to create an image of Windows 7 and use it for deployement however I'm not too sure about the licensing involved.

First off, you cannot image an OEM version and you need an open license version, correct?

Do I need to purchase a VLK license for each notebook that I want to image to? Or can I just purchase 1 open license and image that to multiple computers since the OEM key is in fact for Windows 7 Professional?

A:Image Deployment of Windows 7

I believe you're going to need to look into VLK if you're intending on using the same key & installation across multiple machines. You "may" be able to get away with buying one 7Pro and then inserting the individual OEM key that is on the individual laptop stickers, however I'm not sure on that one so don't quote me there. I'm sure someone else here does know this answer though so sit tight, some one else will surely be able to answer this.

Aside from the licensing issues, once you get the version of Windows that you'll be installing legally with a licensed key, you should look into windows sysprep. It will cut your distribution time down incredibly using this method rather than setting up each machine individually from scratch.

Hi have a query

i want to dpely windows 7 across around 10 PC's but minimise user downtime, as such i intend to install manually using retail versions of the software then update to the specifications i need. all the final workstations will need to be the same.

i have 3 pc's to roll out, then i will drag 3 in, upgrade, redeploy and so on, thus meaning that noone will loose much productivity to downtime.

whats killing me is that after install, which takes around 30 mins including office and other bits of software, the patching and updating of windows on each machine to latest KB updates is taking forever!! so with say 10-15 new pcs all trying to install updates within few hours its going to slow the network to a stop.

is there anyway i can take one of the pc's i have finished, image the updates and software installs then patch them all onto a new clean install of retail windows 7????

i have looked at all sorts of networkable options such as microsoft system essentials or symantec ghost, but none will allow a stand alone image creation off network that i can tell

help!!

thanks in advance for any advice

Hi All,
I need to deploy a windows 7 image with WDS and MDT 2013. The deployment part is working well  but I would like to set up an Autologin account at the end of the deployment process. In my task sequence in MDT I have set up a task (a command line) like
that :
reg.exe import "My_reg_key.reg"

and it's not working properly. If I run this command line manually it's working well.
The weird thing is if I put a restart task straight after the "autologin" task it will work but the task sequence will never end up as the system can't catch up where the task sequence has been left before the reboot if the user logged in is not
the admin user.

Thanks for your help,

I'm attempting to follow this guide to capture a Windows 7 image:

http://www.windowsnetworking.com/articles-tutorials/windows-7/Deploying-Windows-7-Part10.html

I have a test PC with Windows 7 installed on it waiting to be captured.

I've installed the MDT 2013 Update 2 and Windows ADK for Windows 10 to my technician PC.  Unlike this guide, however, I have no tree under 'Deployment Shares'.  So I have no option to import an OS.

This seems to be a stumbling block to actually capture an image.  Is there something I'm missing?  Is there something that needs to be configured that I don't know about?  I'm still learning this whole process so it's entirely possible there's
something glaringly obvious I don't see.

2. netsh wlan add profile filename=ssidname.xml

I work for a large bookstore with a relatively small IT department, and we are looking for a way to image and restore a small number of PCs. Basically, I want to set up a master template PC, build an image of it, then be able to deploy that image over a Microsoft network from a server computer and/or from a bootable CD (pretty standard, I guess).

However, I want to be able to do this without having to install an imaging program on the master PC (preferrably to run the imaging software from a shared drive, because installing the imaging software on the client machines would violate the license agreement) and without booting to DOS from a floppy disk (the server machine doesn't have a floppy drive).

We're considering a few solutions for this: Acronis TrueImage 7, Imagecast 4.6.1, Altiris RapiDeploy, or Norton Ghost 2003. Will any of these solutions perform what we're looking for (I've been through the manuals for each and it seems like they can't add a client agent without booting the client machine into DOS or running the software from the client machine)? Does anyone have any suggestions from personal experience to use these or other products to accomplish this task?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

When i was satisfied with the customization i created Ghost image. Successfully created image and when deployed i recived a message regarding NTFS volume and wehn the image is deployed , client start up and OS initilization appears .... then system run SCAN DISK showing message that "C" drive needs to be checked. After that OS installed successfully and customizations were also OK.
Any idea how to avoide the scan disk issue ?

Nope. Windows sees the hard disk "environment" as not being 100% on par with what it used to be. Plus it doesn't hurt to run it after an image deployment like that anyways

I am having a VERY odd issue with Windows XP Pro and Tablet PC Edition.

I have been following Microsoft's Single-Image Deployment Supplemental Guide which discusses single-image deployment and how to use this process to deploy Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005 in your organization while using your existing Windows XP Professional image.

I followed the article to a T and imported all the Tablet PC components in the Sysprep directory and then re-syspreped the box. At first once mini-setup finished the system would lock up on the Windows XP splash screen about the 3rd time the progress bar cycled through. So I went to Safe Mode and everything worked like a charm. So just as a troubleshooting step I tried to use Safe Mode with Networking. That locked up at the splash screen in the same spot which lead me to believe it was a networking issue. So I disabled all listed networking adapters and tried to boot into normal mode.

Once I saw "Applying Computer Settings" I thought all was good. So I waited until I saw the standard "Press Cntrl-Alt + Delete to Login" screen. So I hit cntrl alt delete and nothing happend. So I tried moving the mouse, and to my amazment, the entire computer is hard locked. This is happening everytime I reboot the computer into Normal mode and the login screen appears. So I tried to go back into Safe Mode with Networking to test that theory again. Although I am able to get logged into the system the system actually hard lo... Read more

Hello,

I am working on setting up an image deployement solution. The current problem I am having with Acronis Snap Deploy 3.0 is that when I try to deploy an image it deploys normally and Snap Deploy does the extra setup before Windows loads to a logon screen. The problem I am having is after I log in, windows is missing the "Vista" theme and whenever I try to click on anyting (Computer, Documents) It gives me a popup messege that has a title of "Explorer.exe" and in the messege it says "class not registed." I cannot figure out why the image is not working. I am deploying it onto the exact same computer I made the image from. It was a clean install of windows Vista Business.

To make the image I loaded the master computer into the Acronis software using the Acronis PXE server. I then imaged the computer and the image was put directly on the imaging server.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thank You

Hi There,

I found this forum thru KariTheFinn's YouTube Videos which are superb! My first post is a problem that hunts me since quite some time now. I startet too more or less ignore it since it was only a problem with one program. But since I switch mail clients it's now also a problem there. But first things first.

I have a Hyper-V Service running on my Windows 10 Machine for toying around. In there I was trying to create my personal perfect Windows 10 Installation with all the Apps, Tools, Settings, etc. I like and want. I did all of this in my created user account Yves. So all the settings from many apps (for example Chrome) are in this user profile. After I was done. I shutdown the Hyper-V Machine Boot up the WindowsPE.iso. And dism the complete machine to a mapped network drive. Than I created a new Hyper-V Machine booted directly into WindowsPE.iso. Diskpartet the complete system like I like. 100MB EFI. 1GB Rescue. 50GB System Partition. Dism the image back to the System Partition and bcdbooted the System Partition. Bootet up and tada System is "almost" like I left it before on the other VM. Only thing missing are for example Chrome extensions and settings. Which I can not figure out why this happens? Newly since I moved from em Client to Outlook 2016. Also Outlook 2016 does not like the dism'ing around. It says .ost file has to be deleted.

Anyone an idea why this is happening and how I can prevent it?

Thanks for your help guys.

Cheers,
Yves

Hi,

I am installing Macrium Reflect and about to image my hard drive.. on a Toshiba Satellite Laptop.

I factory restore the toshiba laptop and now it has norton and all kinds of toshiba crapware software.. So i uninstalled that and now just want to create an image to save as a backup/recovery image that can be used for anytime I want to restore this to factory defaults but without the toshiba crapware..
what is this "sys prep" I read about every so often, and when do you use that? i'm assuming I do not need to use that for restoring images created with macrium.

A:About to install macrium reflect and image..

As long as you are using the WinPE boot disk (otherwise disable Secure Boot) all you do is: pop it in the drive; boot up to the Macrium interface; Select image source; Select image destination and follow the rest of the prompts. If it's your first time, make two images just in the very unlikely event one fails.

Edit: Sorry, This is for re-imaging. Just go ahead and image the drives. Do the small drives before C: once each - separately- as well, just in case they get corrupted at some time in the future.

A:Macrium Reflect allows me to Image but not Clone

Hi SyncopatedEd, welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

Your best option is an image as cloning is normally done directly from the old Hard Drive to a new Hard Drive & not via a USB or external drive.

It would be best to use an external USB Hard Drive for your image as USB sticks are unreliable, particularly for something as important as all your data. If you buy a USB Hard Drive you can use it to make back up images of your system regularly, which is good insurance.

Likely no.

Will the PC boot and operate normally if E is disconnected?

If yes, Macrium will not include E in the image if you choose "create an image......".

If no, Macrium will include E in the image if you choose "create an image.....". Macrium would do so because it senses that E contains some Windows files.

It's possible to configure a PC so that certain Windows files would be on E. In that case, E would have to be included and Macrium should realize that and include it if you choose "create an image......".

But that's a poor way to configure a PC. More likely, C is all that needs to be imaged and E has no Windows files on it.

One way to know for sure is to confirm the PC will boot with E disconnected. Another way is to post a screen shot of Windows Disk Management in this thread so we can examine the PC's configuration.

Your son could also manually choose which partitions to include--and not use that "Create an image...." choice at all.

Macrium Reflect V6
Equipment: 2 ssd drives, Windows 7 pro 64-bit, UEFI, Macrium reflect V6, external HD 1t

Have been using Clonezilla for years. The ssd in the computer
is 126G. This causes Clonezilla to fail on a restore. Clonezilla will
not backup from a large drive to a smaller drive. Therefor I have
dropped Clonezilla. One thing I liked about Clonezilla was the ease
with which you could verify the backup.
I have the free version of Macrium reflect. Being new to MF, I have not
been able to find out how to verify the image I just created.
I did make a recovery cd. I have not used it yet and have no idea
if it will work. The only drives I have on this computer are 2 126G SSDs.
I understand it is very important to do a test restore to make sure things
work. I have not done this!
My plan for a restore from MF:
Backup what I have on the 2nd ssd. Delete everything on the 2nd ssd.
Disconnect the 1st ssd which has windows 7 pro 64-bit on it.
Connect my 1T HD with the latest MF Image. Use the recovery cd and see if
I can restore the image to the 2nd ssd.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A:Macrium Reflect Image verification

In the Macrium GUI click on the Restore tab.
Select the Image you want and there is a Verify Image link.

You can also turn on auto-verify so whenever an image is created it will be verified.
In the Macrium Menu click on Other Tasks > Edit Defaults > Backup > Auto Verify Image

Currently my CustomSettings.ini file starts with:
[Settings]
Priority=TaskSequenceID, Default
[01]
<Stuff I want to happen during Task Sequence ID 01>
[Default]
<Default actions I want to occur for other tasks>
This is being ignored unless once I choose the task during deployment I open a command prompt, rerun ZTIGather.wsf, then click Back and choose the task again.  I've tried adding ZTIGather.wsf as the first action in the task sequence, but it's not working.
What's the easiest/best way to customize actions based on the task?

I am trying to set up a MDT Deployment that will install Win 7 and MS Office 2010. With the Win 7 install I am able to have the system ask for the Windows Key after the install has completed. I would like to do the same for MS Office. I am going to be using this deployment tool for every new computer we get going forward and don't want to have to update my deployment every time I run one. I simply would like to deploy the image and then enter the Product key and activate it. Is this possible?

Hello. I have an issue.

I want to capture an Linux OS custom image or a fresh one and want to use WDS to complete the job. Could it be done?

I know I can use WDS from server to deploy WIN 7 or anyother Win OS to other systems. But can I use the same service to deploy Linux OS to other new systems and how can I go around in capturing the Linux OS image.

I don't want to use any third party application to capture and deploy both WIN and Linux images. I can use SysPrep to capture Windows image, but how do I go about capturing Linux image?

Is there an in-built app for Linux to capture an image like SysPrep (for WIN)???

Please help.

Seems the fly in the ointment for sticking an image on the Macrium Reflect Boot Rescue USB is that they want the USB to be FAT32. The 4 GB file size limit is a killjoy. Has anyone got around it? Right now I have backup images on another partition of my HD. But if partitions got badly hosed I don't know if the WinPE rescue on the USB stick would see it. I have a 32 GB USB 3.0 stick. So I should be able to store one backup image if it wasn't for the FAT32 issue.

Hello, everyone!

First, I want to apologize if this questions were already asked by other people here, and I repeated it. I just can't find the answer that will set my mind free before I restore my back up image. So, sorry for my "noob"-ness.

Anyway, while I already can do the imaging of my HDD and its partitions and I know some about it, I will only do the Restore for the first time now. Before doing it, I want to be sure what will I do and what may be its effects. Searching the web for the answers of this questions seems to be a failure, so I am begging for your help.

QUESTION 1: When I restored an image of one of my HDD to another HDD (a new one), but I will NOT remove the original HDD, will it affect the installed applications that was duplicated due to restoring the image?

QUESTION 2: In case I restored the backup image (example, image of D:/, not system image) to a new HDD (example E:/), then after restore completion, I swapped the drive letters thru Disk Management, will it create an error or corruption to my files? Or worse, will my applications not run anymore?

Hope you can help me with these items, so that I can safely restore my failing HDD to my new drives.

Thank you in advance.

I don't understand question 1, perhaps you can rephrase it.

Question 2:

I've never heard of any problems caused by swapping drive letters. D is D and E is E and F is F, regardless of whether they are new drives, old drives, Seagate, Western Digital, etc.

When started it shows seven partitions.

Only one of them is is shown in red as being nearly full: 'PBR image NTFS Primary'

11.91 GB full from 12.17 GB

Is this normal and nothing to worry about?

One other question:

How to I test the 'Rescue media' I have on a cdr, without actually starting the process of restoring the image?

Thanks

A:Macrium Reflect - what is 'PBR image NTFS Primary'

It's your manufacturer's factory restore image. If you ever decide to restore your system back to the way it was when you bought your machine, then the manufacturer's restore application will be looking in that partition for the restore material. It should be nearly full, otherwise it'd be a waste of disk space seeing that the restore image in the partition won't be growing or added to. So, yeah, nothing to worry about.

As for testing your backup, until you've done a restore, I suppose you can't be 100% sure. But, a very good indicator that the restore will work is to boot into the Rescue Media, and see if you can locate the actual backups. Maybe, while in the Rescue Media environment, browse inside the backups or verify them to make sure.

Hello all,

Yesterday I bought SSD (Samsung 840 pro 240 GB) and let it be connected to my computer (Win 7). As always advised, I disconnected the cables of the old HD (450 GB) and tried to restore a successful image, which I already used to restore the old HD few weeks ago (made by Macrium reflect, the free version) to my new SSD. Start the computer by using the Rescue PE cd which went without problem. Then follow the instruction and chose the image of the old HD which is located on an external drive. Everything went \OK and in the end got the message the restore is successful.

Tried to start the PC but it didn?t start. Changing the Bios Storage configuration to: AHCI didn?t help as well.

Any advice about how to restore my old windows 7 image to the new SSD will be appreciated.

Thanks & regards,

Anne

I was toying with buying a copy of Acronis true Image now that it is on sale, but I figured I'd ask for some thoughts before doing so.

Mainly, I'm looking for the ability to boot from CD/USB and create an image of a hard drive, for backup or recovery purposes. Then, if needed, I can restore the image or access it to extract file. I've used Acronis in the past to do this, but can Macrium handle this process? I have very limited experience with Macrium Reflect Free, and I have no need to use the software for "backup" purposes, in terms of backing up data or a running computer.

Hey there,
I'm to restore my system partition. I have it's image saved on two DVD-RWs.
The problem as stated in the title, it's not reading the image file in disc 1, disc 2 is ok.
I deleted catalyst driver which on the disc 1. Could that be the problem? I mean did the deletion of that file changed the file information table and so Macrium is unable to recognize that now?

A:Macrium Reflect not reading image file from DVD-RW

I copied the image file on the first disc to HDD. When I right click it and chose 'Restore' i get the following error shown below. Does that mean I'll have to start the restoration process with the 2nd disc and then it'll automatically ask for the first disc or the other image's location?

Hello, I just bought a refurbished Dell Optiplex 780, and I actually already have a Dell Optiplex 780. I did create an image of my current computer with Macrium Reflect. I've read that when you try to restore the image to a different computer there can be problems because of incompatible drivers. Does anybody know if that could be an issue with me? Would one Dell Optiplex 780 have the same drivers as another Dell Optiplex 780? Or any other reason I'm not thinking of why such an image restore might be dangerous?

I figure that if this is doable, as an extra safety measure I should probably image the new computer first thing (with Macrium Reflect) before trying to restore some other image to it.

A:Macrium Reflect to restore image to different computer/same model?

I'm guessing both PCs have a Windows installation and each PC has it's own individual Windows license.

Is that correct?

What are you trying to accomplish by restoring an image of the old PC onto the new PC?

Maybe because you want to avoid reinstalling a bunch of programs?

Some other reason?

Yes, regardless of what else you do, it would be a good idea to make a Macrium image of the new machine.

More details needed.

Have you ever restored a Macrium image to a hard drive?

IMO, the simplest free 3rd party program is Aomei backupper Standard version. It can even restore an image to different hardware.

I'm transferring my Windows 8.1 desktop system from a HDD to SSD. I've created a Macrium image file of the partitions "required to backup and restore Windows" on the D: partition of my HDD. I'm ready to restore the Macrium Image from drive D: to the new SSD.

See Restoring an image from within Windows - KnowledgeBase - Macrium Software

Please advise:

What options do I select for the restore?Do I need to resize the restored partitions and how should I set the partition alignment to ensure a bootable SSD?Do I need to do anything else to ensure the new SSD will be UEFI bootable and the Windows recovery partitions will be operable?

A:Restoring an Image File from Macrium Reflect Free

With SSD connected. Run Macrium and click on Restore tab then select the image that you've create in D: and select the SSD as destination drive to be restored to.No. You don't need to do anything. If the original is UEFI then the restore will be in UEFI.

After restored the image to the SSD. Connect the SSD to sata port 0 and set it to be the 1st drive in boot priority. Reboot, the PC should boot up with SSD as the boot drive..

I run Macrium reflect free & create an image every week but have always assumed it created a new image (due to my choosing full backup every time) but had used a small 1TB HD for backup so didn't notice anything amiss. Recently I began using a 4TB HD & therefore thought it would now begin to show each image separately, but I checked after running it this week & noticed the image had the same date as previous backup. I thought I would ask here for advice on what I should be seeing with the backup.
I'm choosing to backup via the .xml file - right clicking & choose full backup/image.
Should running full backup every time create separate images or just go over the original image?
If go over the original/first image, will it retain the original date & time or update it to show the new image date/time?

OK here's my scenario, I have successfully used Macrium Reflect to create images saved on a 1TB external drive. I had 2 good images stored on it and tried to put 3rd image on the same drive. Please note that I have used one of save images to restore the system after replacing the failing hard drive. The create image process runs to what I think to be the very end then comes up with msg: "an error has occurred, Please see the history log for more details"

I could not find this history log, but figured maybe there was not enough space on the 1TB drive to completley write the image file. On my next attempt to create the image, I used a brand new 3TB external drive and it fails the same way. I have attached a photo of the error, does anyone have any advice on what could be happening and also direct me to where the history file is? I have left laptop up and running after clicking ok, did not want to risk losing the history file by booting back up. BTW, on the 3TB external drive it did create a temp file named xxxxxx.mrimg.temp with size of 0 kb.

A:Issue with creating Image on Laptop with Macrium Reflect

There will be a log of the backup attempt on the "Logs" tab (rightmost tab) in the Macrium Reflect interface. I would "OK" out of this and read that log. It could be power/energy saving features dropping the external drive. Does the external drives have an independent power supply or is it receiving power only through the USB connection?

11.7G for 23.4G occupied space is normal for medium compression.

You would prefer images were larger?

OK, then go to the "other tasks" menu and choose "edit defaults" and select no compression.

Hi
I am having trouble with Lab 4 for the 70-680. I have run sysprep on my Win 7 machine and created a WinPE boot disk but I can't boot WinPE boot image. I think it's 4.3 under Create WinPE Boot Image in the lab where you have to boot the image you created. I can't burn the image to a CD - I think I may have done an error before I did the sysprep where it shuts down your machine. I think I didn't point it to the hard disk in command prompt - I followed all the commands in the Labs word for word.
If anyone can help then I would greatly appreciate it.

Hello,
I want to know the best practice for REFERECE image windows 7
My server kms is  AUTO_DISCOVERY  if I build my reference image windows 7 on this network and I take ghost (image state before running sysprep), the image is auto actived
After I deploy with sysprep and rearm-0 but problem appeared on kms server with account computer. if i want to fix it,  I read on this forum that we need to tape slmg-rearm just before sysprep computer ..
If I want no activation reference computer I need to shutdown the kms server or build the windows on another network without kms server but the reference computer is good for only 30days after i need to reinstall each time

What is the good solution ?
1- never activate my reference image and reinstall windows 7 each time I want to change setting
2- install windows 7 on the network auto discovery after sysprep with rearm=0 ???
reference image = just before tape sysprep /generalize /oobe /shutdown....

A:REFERENCE IMAGE 30 DAYS ACTIVATION kms

Hi,
1. You must do a sysprep before doing a ghost. Otherwise the CMID is not reset which can cause problem with KMS activation. And there is no need to activate your reference image.
2. Activation can be reset an unlimited number of times for an activated Key Management Service (KMS) clients. You can use the sysprep /generalize command where the value of the SkipRearm setting is equal to 1 for the reference image. After capturing this
image, use the sysprep /generalize command, where the value of the SkipRearm setting is equal to 0. But if you rebuild your reference image from scratch no need to worry about that.

We have many different models of dell computers and we image with sccm 2012 successfully on all lines BUT we're just getting the 7040 line and they fail upon disk partitioning component of the task sequence. I finally found the proper drivers for the network and now it fails consisitantly on setting disk partition variables.
I have resorted to bypassing all partition info and set it to install the OS to the next available formatted partition (which does exist) and still come up with the same error. 80070002 which is a very generic error. It is not the driver but something to do with the hard drive or maybe the compatibility or even UEFI (which we have set to legacy mode). We are not using UEFI.
The OS is win 7 Enterprise but it never makes it to copying the OS. It fails on the disk partition. they are seagate 500GB drives with 16GB RAM or 8 GB RAM (same with both).

I can set the BIOS to UEFI mode, and I can enable secure boot and all the other settings, but for some reason as soon as I restart the computer after making those settings changes, the computer cannot find the hard drive anymore. After the computer reboots, it enables the NIC card for PXE boot, but not the hard drive as shown below.

So here are my basic steps for accomplishing this so far.
1. Reboot computer into Windows PE
2. Format the drive with MBR so I can download the CCTK files
3. copy CCTK files to X:\CCTK
4. Clear and set the Dell BIOS password
5. Activate UEFI Mode
6. Set boot order and all other settings by importing custom ini file.
7. Restart Computer
Attached is my Task Sequence log to be looked at well. Below are my task sequence settings to make the change from legacy to UEFI on Dell Optiplexs. I have tried this on multiple Optiplex 7010's and 7020's with the same results. If anyone has any suggestion on how to change BIOS from legacy to UEFI in a task sequence o... Read more

A:Enable UEFI on Dell Optiplexs using SCCM Task Sequence

So while I understand what you want to do, i'm not sure what you want to do if that makes sense.  I will add my 2 cents in however.  From everything i've read, UEFI uses GPT as the file table for the HDD while BIOS uses MBR.  My first thought would be if you are using UEFI on a hard drive that is formatted to MBR, maybe it cannot read it as a boot drive?  I have heard that UEFI can see it as a file drive, but nothing has been said about booting from MBR if you are using UEFI.

Hello
Have recently transferred my computer into a new case and added a 250gb SATA HDD
to the configuration replacing an 80gb ata HDD

MSI Neo4 Platinum MotherBoard
AMD 64 3700+
2Gb Ram 3200
1 160gb Maxtor HDD ata
1 250gb Hitachi HDD SATA
ThermalTake Silent power 480W PSU

Before connecting the 160gb HDD I fresh installed XP on the sata drive, updated and running ok.

I've turned on my computer this morning and I am met with this dialogue on a black screen immediatley after the post image.

Sil 3114 SATARaid Bios Version 5.2.09
Copyright etc

Press CRTL+S or F4 ro enter raid utility.

if I do nothing after 15 secs the computer then boots to windows.

if I press F4 i then get
No device detected, utility disabled ! press any key to continue

press key - boot to windows

I've gone into Bios and the 250gb drive is recognized as IDE Third Master
DVD and CD writers recognized as Primary Master/Primary Slave
!60gb Hdd connected in IDE2 recognized as Secondary Master (No jump pins)

I've tried with both SATA RIAD enabled and disabled, no luck.
Found SATARaid installed in the add remove programs list - removed - no difference at startup.

Have pressed the Clear CMOS button on the motherboard and still get the Press F4 screen coming up after post.

I don't know why it should suddenley start doing this after working fine for a few days.

Any help in stopping this screen from appearing would be gratefully recieved

Thankyou

I recently restored my Windows 7 disk using Acronis Western Digital Edition, Macrium Reflect, and Windows 7. See results below for both creating the image and restoring the image. The compressed image files were all in the range of 45-50 GB. The associated boot DVD was used in all cases to restore the image.

Have others noticed that Macrium will take substantially longer if resizing the Windows partition? It doesn't seem as though Macrium should take 52 minutes when resizing the 1 TB Windows partition to 500 GB with only 70 GB actually used by Windows 7. Imaging included only the 100 MB boot partition and the Windows partition.

No verification was done. I'm using Macrium 64 bit version 5.3.

It's interesting that Acronis WD Edition is much faster. Does anyone know what it does differently?

Create and Store Image on External USB 3.0 Disk

Acronis - 9 minutes
Macrium - 14 minutes
Windows 7 - 12 minutes

Restore Image to 1 TB Disk

Acronis - 9 minutes
Macrium - 25 minutes
Macrium - 52 minutes (resize 1 TB to 500 GB)
Windows 7 - 29 minutes

I am using Macrium Reflect Free to create an image of my WD portable hard drive. It has about 1TB worth of files on it. I installed the latest version of Macrium Reflect and used all the default settings to make the backup. It has been 1.5 hours so far and is 7% complete. At this rate it is going to take about 13 hours to complete. Is this normal? It sure seems long to me. I am backing up to a Seagate 2TB portable hard drive.

After talking to some 'friends' about which to use, I chose macrium to help me backup windows 7. For the compression and I heard it's able to backup even if windows is totally screwed up.

So I want EXACTLY what's on my drive and it came out weird.

The system reserve is 100 MB, I've used 35MB.
The actual drive has 99GB used and is a total of 465 free (Solid State Drive Samsung Evo)

And I got a 314 GB image file (thankfully I used my pretty empty external drive, thought it would've been smaller and was close to thinking a 150 GB drive would be more than sufficient space...)

So when I mount it in macrium, I'm getting 25MB used out of the 100MB reserve for system. And the other one I'm getting around 89 GB out of the total 465.

So the numbers are different as well.....
My procedure:

Clicked on the C drive which has system reserve and all my programs. Clicked on IMAGE THIS DISK.

Chose destination which is my F external drive.

In the next one "EDIT PLAN FOR BACKUP" I didn't add anything because I just wanted a one time thing and I unchecked everything, including the retention rules

The compression is on medium recommended.
Am I missing something? It's suppose to be at LEAST same size if not smaller :/

How can the C partition have the system reserved. Did you copy the bootmgr to C ??

Try to image the partitions rather than the whole disk.

I've just created an image of the files from my C: drive, which are on a 1Tb drive. What I'd now like to do is shrink the volume down, into two drives. Do I need to recreate the image, as I've changed it from the original when Reflect was run? If I don't, will a restore get rid of the secondary drive / partition?

A:Macrium Reflect...Burn image and then changing disk partition

An image restore made with MR will basically recreate the partition from which the backup was originally made.

IF you shrink the original partition, you would need to do another image backup.

MR doesn't provide an option to resize the partition as part of the restore.

Hi All,

I've got some new DELL AIO Optiplex 3240s that are now running W10 Pro after successful clean installs. I am needing to set one up as a reference computer and then deploy that image to the rest of them. This is for the small library I work at, so we don't have a server or anything. I assume I will need to make some sort of bootable custom image on a USB drive or DVD. My questions are as follows:

1) What's the best way to go about creating a reference computer? What tools and resources are pre-built into W10 Pro that make this easy?

2) As far as deploying the image, what's the best way to accomplish this since I don't have a server? I know there are some built-in ways to accomplish this, but am not sure which route to go. Or should I opt for some free third-party software of some sort?

I have previously tried using Sysprep to do this by following an online tutorial, but it turns out that there is some sort of issues with AIO computers that Sysprep doesn't like...or at least the DELL AIO Optiplex line. For the curious, the error I experienced can be found here: https://goo.gl/Lc6Tg5

After further research, it appears the Sysprep is a bit antiquated and that there may be better ways to prep and deploy and image anyway. Any help will be much appreciated.

We use MDT, Microsoft Deployment Toolkit, To deploy windows 7 and windows 8.1 images to our latitude laptops.
the Control Vault driver is not installing as part of the cab file that has been imported into MDT, there for I have to install it as an post install application.
the switches for the control vault by typing "/?" are shown as /s /f.
the driver installs fine if I run it on a laptop by opening command prompt and the silent install switches but it will fail when MDT tries to run the same command during deployment.
Has ayone had this problem and how have you fixed it?

Hi,
I am having all sorts of trouble imaging a new Dell 5570 laptop with custom Windows 7 SP1 Ent. through SCCM.I have tried Dell support and their assistance so far hasn't been satisfactory unfortunately.

First: I had issues booting the laptop with my boot image, SSD was not recognized. I had to import Samsung NVMe drivers into boot image for the SSD to be recognized and to kick start task sequence.
Now: The task sequence doesn't go through. Immediately after 'Set up Windows and ConfigMgr', the laptop reboots and crashes with the error '0x0000007B'.

I have already tried below with not much success.

Dell Diagnosis says no faults detectedSATA Operation set to AHCI, RAID on in BIOSBoot sequence set to Legacy, UEFIWith and Without 5570 drivers after applying O.SWith and Without KMDF, UMDFDifferent WIM files-one recently updated with most hotfixes, one updated last year, one close to vanilla Windows 7 SP1 Ent.
Any help here is much appreciated please as I have around 20 laptops already procured from Dell and waiting to be imaged before deploying.

Thanks,

I have followed all suggestions on getting rid of this error from technet, microsoft and other blogs to no avail.  When I first start Task Scheduler the title error above (screen shot attached) appears twice and after clicking OK on each instance I
get into the Task Scheduler. Many of the suggestions I have tried.  The only one I haven't tried is deleting ALL the Subkeys under the
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\Current Version\Schedule. I'm not sure if this will actually work or totally mess up the registry. I know I can always back up the registry key and if it doesn't work restore it.  I can't figure out which task is
causing the error.  I tried the cmd line suggested: schtasks /query | findstr /i
but this doesn't work just gives Bad command.  How do I figure out which task is causing the errors? There has to be a way of finding this out. Many of the tasks show "disabled" so I don't think that would cause the issue.
I am totally confused as to what is causing these errors or even how to fix since I have tried everything that has been posted.  I want to mention that I tried updating to Windows 10.  I am currently on Windows 7 Home premium. The first time it failed
with error error 0xC1900101 ? 0x40017.  They say this is caused by USB or faulty driver. However Windows 10 says everything compatible on my 7 computer.  The next time I tried updated, I disabled all USB, unplugged

This is a common problem with that RSS feed synchronization task. Here is the fix.

Open the Task Scheduler.
On the View Menu, select the 'Show Hidden Tasks' option.
In the left side menu, select 'Task Scheduler Library'.
In the Center section, right click the   'User_Feed_Synchronization'   task and select Delete.
Exit the Task Scheduler.

Next, select Start / Accessories. Right click 'Command Prompt' and select the 'Run As Administrator' option.
Click 'Continue' on the UAC prompt.
In the command window, type the following command.

msfeedssync enable

Press ENTER.

This command will replace and refresh the 'User_Feed_Synchronization' task.

This will not affect the RSS Feeds you are subscribed to.

Hope this helps.

Macrium Reflect v6.1.1225

29-Mar-2016

What's New 6.1.1225 - 29th March 2016

Server Plus - Support added for Exchange 2016
Server Plus now fully supports MS Exchange 2016 granular backup and restore

Bug Fixes

Encrypted image file access
In rare circumstances encrypted images could fail to open with v6.1.1196. This has been resolved
Out of memory error not reported for consolidation failure
On 32 bit Windows installations an 'Out of Memory' error would report 'Unknown Error'. This has been resolved
Server Plus - Email export problem
If an email had no subject, Reflect was previously unable to export it to EML or MSG file. This has been resolved.
Server Plus - Deleted email restore problem
On Exchange 2003 and 2007, if an email's content had been deleted from the Exchange server but it still had an allocated row in the Exchange database, then that row would still be visible in the Mailbox Restore wizard. When restoring folders, Mailbox Restore would try to restore these non-existent emails. This has been resolved

The images will work.

The bootable rescue media SHOULD work. Do you see any notification at Macrium site that rescue media needs to be updated?

Can you boot with the old rescue media and locate your image files and destination partition?

If in doubt, make new rescue media. I do that for major Macrium upgrades anyway. Not sure if I have to.

Hi, as concerned ergo reluctant to do the recent updates, I thought maybe if I just do the oldest one first, however, they all appear to be issued on 2/12/23, so my question is, is the lower the number, the older the update i.e. does make sense to do them not only one at a time, but in sequence also.

The higher or lower numbers do not correspond to higher or lower listing in my udpated window, just to be clear, so again that is related to the same question.

Is it better to start with updated at top and work down, and not consider lower or higher number sequence of even vice versa, start at bottom and work my way up one at a time.

Here below is the order they appear to me in my window, tho now I see the sequence of KB numbering does not jive with the 3.5.1 > 4 sequence as this latter and how it appears in the window as top down makes sense. I'm thinking top down is probably best if not also some manner of correct. I dunno. Rybosix

I have a new XP/HP system and I want to bring the WinXP OS up to date. I have downloaded many XP critical/recommended files (10-15) for future install and now I'm concerned.

Question#1. Is there some sequence/order to which files are installed first, second, third, etc?

Q2. Whether there is a order/order or not, do I install one update file then reboot system (not all update files require rebooting) or can/should I install as many as is allowed by system/update-programming?

With appreciation...

A:XP Update(s) Sequence/Order

This is the wrong forum for XP questions really.

However, the answer to your question is to install them in the order of the dat that they were released. You may have to check on the MS web site what that date was unless the properties of the file downloaded tell you that. You only have to reboot if you are told to, but if won't hurt if you decide to anyway.

In future install the updates as soon as you download them. they are doing no good sitting on your hard drive when the OS needs patching
