A: Satellite C855-141 - fan is running constantly

Hi

From my knowledge the fan activity depends on notebook usage and everything is controlled by fan table which is stored in the BIOS.
The fan table contains information how the cooling module has to run in different situations.

While gaming, the CPU and GPU produce more warmness and this need to be cooled down. Therefore the cooling fan has to rotate faster.
But I?m wondering why the fan does not run slower after the game has been closed.

However, I would recommend you to disconnect the AC adaptor and to remove the battery and to press and hold the power button (30 sec would be good enough)
Then power up the unit, access the BIOS and set it to default, save the change and reboot the notebook.

Furthermore I would recommend you to check the windows power plan settings.
In advanced settings it?s possible to change the cooling mode as well as the max CPU performance.

Hi All,

I know that the laptop started out with W8 and with 3 partitions (Recovery, System & Main C Drive) and all were showing in a Healthy state.

When I upgraded to W8.1 quite a while back it created another Recovery partition which in essence is fine but I had a few issues with my laptop and used the Toshiba Recovery options to 'Refresh' my laptop and in doing so created another partition but this time it's 8GB!

Now the Refresh did not help so now I have completed a full 'Reset' of the laptop back to Factory Settings and expected the 2 additional partitions to be deleted as I though this 'Reset' option re-formatted the Hard Drive and but it back to an Out-of-the-Box state.

Can I delete the 2 extra partitions? or should I have chosen a better option to wipe the laptop to a brand new state?

Thanks - Jason

Can I delete the 2 extra partitions? or should I have chosen a better option to wipe the laptop to a brand new state?

Question: did you create the Toshiba recovery medium (disk or USB flash stick) in the past?
Before trying to delete any partitions from the HDD, I strongly recommend creating such recovery disks!

After that you can try to delete these partitions or could set the notebook back to factory settings!

So, I've just found an i7-3610QM, which will fit the Motherboard of my laptop just fine (rPGA 988B).

The only thing I don't know is if the CPU will actually work if i install it. It'd be a waste to buy it and find out it doesn't work when i put it in the laptop.

If someone from Toshiba could tell me, honestly, if the BIOS is locked down to one CPU or not that would be great, as I could use having 4 cores and 8 threads instead of 2 cores and 4 threads.

My only other concern with it is the motherboard power delivery. The power delivery is currently running a CPU rated for 35w, which under the most strenuous of loads only draws about 26. Could it support this new chip if it works, considering that it's TDP is 45W (so the running wattage may be around 37-38W). Cooling shouldn't be an issue at all

So i had this problem since yesterday.
I have windows 10, when the laptop is unplugged the battery icon always shows 100% and around 1h of battery remaining, but if i plug the AC power in it shows the actual battery percentage and the orange charging light is on,
I tried to remove the battery, hold the power button for 30 sec but it did not work.

Hi all, I have a laptop Toshiba C855-2CL and all of a sudden it won't start up!!

When only the battery is plugged in, I press the power button and a white led on the power indicator is flashing 5 times, after that nothing at all.

When I plug the power cord (with or without the battery, it's the same), the white led on the power indicator is flashing always plus the DVD drive keeps making a strange noise and flashing always.

I've tried all possible ways to fix it myself, by reading a couple of topics in this forum with no luck. Here's what I've tried so far:

1) Power drain by disconnecting everything & pressing the power button for 30". Then reconnect the battery and charger.
2) Step 1 + memory removed
3) Step 2 + MB battery cell removed
4) Step 1 + DVD Drive removed from the laptop
5) Step 1 + the use of another power adapter and cable

Any idea what else to try?

Hello,

I own a Toshiba Satellite C855-12K, I have owned it for about 3 years, but 2 weeks ago, I accidentally damaged the motherboard, while I was cleaning the computer, at first I thought it was the display or video card that has broken, because it was acting weird, ( shutting off, 20 seconds after the desktop loads, colorful, thin pixel lines falling all over the screen ) but after 5 times of starting it up, display turning off, I left it alone.
The next day, it would not start up at all, so I sent it to a really good computer technician, who called me the next day, saying, that the motherboard has died, and that it needs a new one.

When I was cleaning it, I watched a video on youtube, that showed how to open Toshiba Satellite C855-12J or something, (not the C855-12K, which I have) but I noticed, that the chassis is the same, the size of the motherboard is the same. That's why I would love to not put a C855-12K motherboard in my C855-12K, but something more powerful, with more performance, because I want to play newer games, but I don't want to sell my C855 and buy a new computer, I'd rather upgrade this computer.

So are there any motherboards for C855, that have a better CPU / GPU than C855-12K, if there are, could you show me a list of computers, which come with them? Maybe there are motherboards from other Toshiba computers, that fit?

Thanks in advance.

A:Compatible Motherboards for Satellite C855

Due to specific design notebooks are specific products and, generally speaking, some ?radical? hardware upgrades are not possible. Every hardware platform has certain cooling system designed for optimal hardware protect.

Every notebook model has also specific design and different ports placed on different places.
For instance Satellite C855 was offered with 6 different hardware platforms. With other words, with 6 different motherboards that can have different hardware (CPU, GPU, WLAN, BT) but also different ports on the left and right side.

Every authorized Toshiba service, but also independent notebook repair shops, will exchange defective motherboard with identical mainboard model. Some kind of ?compatible? mainboards are not available.

Motherboard is very expensive so you must check the price and see if it is worth to pay a lot of money for repair. Four years ago my A300 has had ?electro shock? by connecting external USB device. The repair was extremely expensive so I sold it on eBay for spare parts and I bought new one ? Satellite P500.

Hey guys,

since some time I have the annoying problem that my 'FN' button seems to be reversed. I didn't chnge any of these settings and recently all my upper keys can only be used by holding the fn button.

As before everything worked without this. I didn't find any settings or key combinations to change this.

After some internet research I found out that I can change this by using the Toshiba System settings using the Keyboard option. When I did this I only got the 'general' tab in the program to the left and it said I should install Toshiba Password Utilty which I did but didn't change anything.

Afterwards I uninstalled and reinstalled the Toshiba System settings and did a restart.

But now The program doesn't open and I only get the notification that I should install toshiba Password Utilty???
I think I deleted some Toshiba Tools on this pc after purchase and would greatly appreciate any help as this is becoming very annoying!

Thanks....

A:Satellite C855-2J7 - Fn button reversed

As I can see this thread is marked as answered so it would be nice if you can inform us about your FN keys issue. Have you found solution or not?

I don?t know what have you removed and how you have configured your machine and which kind of solution is acceptable for you but if there is no problem reinstall original recovery image and configure your machine again.
There is no need to remove some Toshiba applications. Some of them are not so important and you can just disable them from automatic start-up but they must not be removed from the system.

What you can remove are some additional applications like antivirus and you can install your favourite application.

Don?t forget to create recovery image back-up ? recovery media (DVD or USB) using preinstalled Toshiba recovery media creator.

Hello Everyone......

I have a Satellite C855 Windows 7 64bit Laptop and when a disc is put into D drive
it says there is no disc. Tempro sent me an alert for 2 x sorts of Video Player.

They both went through
the download process and right at the end" Patch Project" informed me... can not find our player in your
system.

..DVD-RAM Utility-- Status no disc.
Diagnostic Tool.. CD/DVD Drive... Fail
Flash Player up to date and Java up to date.
All this is with a disc in the drive by the way. I can hear it clicking as if it wants to start.

I went on Toshiba Extranet and I saw my problem written in a box but I had to login.
I had not been on the
site for quite some time but I had my user name and password written down.

They accepted my user name
but not the password or my email address... so frustrating! I emailed for help but I won't hold my breath.
Fortunately I can backup via Flash drive.

Any ideas would be received with much gratitude.

Hi there.
I've made a factory settings restore on my laptop.
Antivirus has been removed.

I need to install all Win updates in order to be able to upgrade to Win 8.1.

All updates are listed correctly, but when I try to install them (10 items each time), I almost always receive a message frow Windows, that sounds like this "ailure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer".

I tried solving this issue running the correct Microsoft FixIt application, but nothing has changed.

I disabled all services and application at boot. Nothing!

I see that a small part of the updates have been installed, but there are at least 166 files wating to be downloaded and installed (about 1.5 GB... ).

Thist behaviour is very strange. The laptop was running Win10... all the updates from w8 to w8.1 and from w8.1 to w10 have been installed once.
I had to restore my system because of terrible problems.

What's goin' on!?

I am trying to install Windows 7 on a Toshiba Satellite 855.
At present we have Windows 8 installed. The computer runs from approx 5am to 11pm with no obvious issues. e.g. no "blue screen of death"
Safe boot is disabled and boot mode changed from UEFI to CSM.
The computer boots correctly from DVD drive and the message "Starting Windows 7" appears and then the logo.
After a very short while the computer goes quiet i.e. no sound from the drives and appears to hang and nothing happens. (we've left it on for several hours just in case)
Different Windows 7 disks have been tried with the same result.
We have also tried swapping out the hard drive altogether, and replacing it with a new drive to no avail.
The computer is now back running Windows 8 with no obvious issues, but we want to run Windows 7!

hi

I have purchased a new latop (toshiba satellite) windows 8 original pre-installed,
however, I wanted to repartition my hard disk and without paying attention I have deleted the recovery partition, as a result, the laptop could not boot.

So I asked a professional if he could get my laptop to its original factory condition as it was when I bought it (with windows 8 original pre-installed ...) in order to sell it later, and he told me that's impossible since I don't have the recovery disc ,and the only way to get it work is by installing windows 7.

I've poor knowledge in computer staff that's why I had not make a copy of a recovery disc.

Now, as I'm planning to sell my laptop, I'm wondering if there's a possible way to sell me the recovery disc that allow me to backup my laptop to its factory condition (with original windows 8 pre-installed and pre-loaded software of course), and the estimated total cost that I will pay.

For my Satellite C855-2HW with Win 8 OEM, I'd like a separate data partition besides the OS+programs one.
At the moment 4 partitons are already in use.
First a 450MB recovery partition, second a 260 MB EFI partition, third the 920GB OS partition and fourth a 10GB recovery partition.

Now that I've made recovery DVD's with 'Toshiba Media Recovery Creator' , I can safely remove the recovery partition right?
Can you only do this from external media like with Diskpart or Gparted ?

The need for this partition is for media files; fotos, docs, music, movies etc.

What is the best way to about this?
cheers, boris.

Yes. After changing partitions structure probably you will not be able to use HDD recovery installation anymore. This was the case in the past. Anyway, now you have recovery DVDs and you can install recovery image using these DVDs.

This problem is not unique to Windows because when I enter the UEFI the behavior is the same as you can see in the video below (always appears the window to save the changes without me clicking on anything).

This behavior disappears when I click on the F5 key but happen again after some time without me having done anything. I've reinstalled Windows and all drivers but the problem continues.

TOSHIBA Satellite C655-S5193

Hey there,
While surfing this afternoon, a blue screen of death quickly flashed across my screen and the laptop shut down. When I attempted to reboot, the power LED would only flash along with the LED's beneath caps lock and scroll lock. I attempted to discern an error code from the flashing, but it seems useless as the flashing never stops, just one long-ish flash followed by a quick one.

I tried it with/without the power supply, removed the battery, held the power button for minutes at a time, removed the hard drive, all with no change. I cannot feel any abnormally hot areas (it's always been pretty warm when running) and have no clue what to do, as the warranty expired 6 months ago.

Any ideas?

Hi,

I recently purchased this laptop, and the fan is driving me crazy, every time the CPU reaches 55c the fan switches on really loud for a few seconds, until the temp drops to 45c, then the fan switches off entirely, and the cycle repeats itself infinitely.

I have changed the cooling method to battery optimized and it has no effect - http://jkontherun.files.wordpress.com/2009/10/toshiba-nb205-power-options.jpg?w=418&h=448

Why can't the fan stay on permanently @ 30% load and thus negating the need to ramp it up to 100% every time the cpu overheats.

I can't believe such a simple little issue as this even exists.

A:Satellite Pro L450D - Fan starts/stops, constantly on/off

As I can see for plugged in is ?maximum performance?. If you use your notebook with AC adapter set it to ?battery optimized? too.
This will reduce cooling fan activity.

Android devices in the same area have no problem so it doesn't appear to be the router/channel.Troubleshooting suggests "Default gateway not available" or "Protocol missing". I upgraded to 10 when it was available. I've actually reinstalled windows numerous times to try to correct this issue. I've also reinstalled the touchpad drivers many times. I even tried replacing the physical touchpad by buying a new cover that comes with the touchpad. Nothing is working. Any other suggestions? Look for a new laptop?

My laptop is in perfect condition. I haven't dropped it ever and I haven't even downloaded anything for a couple days now. Today when I turned on my satellite L300D, it started emitting a high frequency sound and as I am typing this right now I am still hearing it. How do I make the sound stop coming? The sound is coming from the "spine" of the laptop where the screen and keyboard are connected.

I have already tried removing the battery for a while and then putting it back in, nothing changed. I also tried using my laptop without the battery while it's plugged in but still nothing.

What I did find was that when I adjust my screen brightness, the sound either gets louder (if I increase the screen brightness) or quieter (if I decrease the screen brightness). Even with the screen being as dark as can be, I still hear the sound.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you!

Uhm this is really wierd but anyways problem fixed. I pretty much started hitting/slapping the part of my laptop that was emitting the noise and then it was fixed.

I bought my laptop in April last year. I have had no problem with it in terms of functionality, but occasionally I noticed I'd get the odd static shock. I ignored this when it occurred as it usually went away. Now I find it's happening all the time. It's not a huge shock, but my hands are constantly tingling and prickling when I type. I use a USB mouse and as I'm moving the mouse I feel great discomfort in my fingers.

I'm working on the laptop most days, for a good amount of time, and this is seriously aggravating. I've tried the obvious 'common sense' solutions (static mat, grounding myself on metal to ensure it isn't just static etc) but the problem persists. My fingers continue to tingle uncomfortably after I've ceased using the laptop, but it is definitely the laptop which is causing this. This occurs when plugged in and on battery only.

My laptop is out of warranty now by six weeks, and I can't afford to replace the laptop, but at the same time it's actually causing me physical harm when I use it. Any solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I have a Toshiba M45-S359 notebook laptop. About every 20-30 seconds, the wireless connection drops off (and immediately automatically reconnects). This is not a router issue because I tried 2 different routers (Linksys and Netgear) and also the wireless connection is perfectly stable on the other laptop I have. There are no interference issues. My phone operates at a very different (5.8 GHz) frequency. Also, the issue exists even when I have the laptop sitting very close to the router. Any suggestions/advice? Thanks in advance.

A:CPU running fan constantly?

Answer Match 47.46%

My CPU usage is always running at 50-55%, which it wasn't doing a week ago. When I check the "Processes" tab under Task Manager, there isn't any application/browser/programs that are taking up that cpu usage. I also ran a virus check with TrendMicro and it came up with nothing. I'd like to be able to know what is running in the background and stop it. It's making work related programs and browsing more slow.

Hello,Pasting in contextual information from another topic ~ OBHere is a little history.March 30th A Windows problem first became evident as the CPU spiked to 100% and on reboot, Windows would not boot up stating it could be a hardware or software problem. At that time I thought it was the motherboard and had it swapped out because the error I had was different but the symtoms were the same prior to the system not booting.April 6th got the laptop back from HP and put in my HD to boot from. It worked for a day and then the CPU spiking issue was found, only this time with no failure to boot.Since that date I have tried to isolate the issue but to no avail. I have tried various restore dates and images, as well as manipulating the data on the master image (delete WoW before issue is active and reinstall it from scratch). None of it has worked. My latest attempt was to restore from my oldest image available [the other night]. It was left restoring and hasn't been tested yet. I am not sure if the "issue" will be visible on it. I tested one last night 3-4 weeks later (Feb 16th date) and it was but apparently never became active for close to 2 months...End of added material. ~ OBThis is in reference to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic219056.html and http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/218815/cpu-runs-at-100-constantly/.I have attached the log files that you requested. A:CPU running at 100% constantly

Hello All,

I wanted to provide an update to this. I blew away the image last night hoping to restore from the factory settings and get it up and running. That worked for about an hour before the symptoms came back. That normally leads me to think that there is something on my home network that is passing a virus along before I can patch windows, but to add further confusion to this topic, the same situation has occurred on my work laptop. Both are HP NC6400. That is the only similarity. The work laptop is running XP and my home machine Vista. I had both machines rebuilt and the work one without ever stepping into my house exhibited the same issue on a fresh build. Is it possible that there is something resident in the BIOS of these machines, or that a Virus screwed up the CPU's?

Hi,

I have two computers, one computer runs smoothly at a cpu level of around 10%, and has less RAM, hard drive space, and runs more cpu related tasks, it has a duel core 2.4, my other computer, however, runs at 100% all the time, no matter how many processes I kill in tskmgr.exe, it runs incredibly slow, it has a duel core 2.2.

I've ran malwarebytes, CCleaner, registry cleaner, defrag, and it still runs at 100%, it didn't used to do this, it's happened for at least two months, but it keeps getting worse.

If i let the notebook idle for 2 min it goes dead silent but starts again even if i just scroll down a homepage. And even if i start programms whicht take more resources, the fan does not get louder. Is there anyway to controll the fan? Help would be really appreciated, Thanks in advance and sorry for my bad english

It isnt spyware/or a virus, as I've check into that pretty thoroughly...

A:S41 - Fan constantly running

That is usually caused by the vents that allow air to be drawn over the CPU heat sink being clogged with dust   Once the CPU gets hot, the system will slow down, and eventually just shut down to protect itself from a meltdown.     I would try using a vacuum cleaner hose and a can of computer cleaning air to blow/suck out the dust and see if that helps.     I that still fails, you may have to remove the base cover (see page 34 of the Lenovo S41/U41 Hardware Maintenance Manual) and clean the fan manually.     In rare case the heat sinks fail, or the thermal heatsink compund beween the CPU and the heat sink cracks and fails to transfer heat to the heat sink efficiently, mut most likely you will find the system is full of dust. Lenovo used to have a fan cleaning program in the Lenovo Energy Managment software, but I think it removed it for some reason.    It is supposed to run the fan backwards and forwards at high speed to try to clean the dust, but if it is really plugged, it probably will not work. Good luck. Lenovo S41/U41 S41-35 S41-70 S41-75 U41-70 Hardware Maintenance Manualhttps://download.lenovo.com/consumer/mobiles_pub/lenovo_s41-35_s41-70_s41-75_u41-70_hmm_201503.pdf

I have a Compaq Presario PC, windows XP W/SP2 installed. Model # SR1503WM. The CPU constantly runs whether computer is being used or not. I have checked the task manager and it shows CPU as 0% and compaq connections agent as the only application running. I have 1.24GB of RAM installed. I have Norton installed and AVG and have checked for spyware and computer seems to be clean of any. The unit seems to be cool as it is not hot when felt or air from it, and also is free of dust clogging vents and inside of unit. What could be the problem. It is 2 years old this month. The noise runs me crazy after a while, thanks!

In Windows Task Manager, under the Performance Tab, my CPU is showing at 100% permanently. I've tried closing down some of the high runner processes but nothing makes any difference.

I've run several cleaners (RegCure, CCleaner etc) but again nothing makes any difference.
My PC is constantly freezing, hanging, sputtering and is becoming unusable.

I also noticed that when I manage to perform a normal shutdown, everything goes normally BUT my screen stays on, and the power button light remains on, but I can hear the drives and fan stopping. I then have to perform a manual powerdown by holding the on/off button for about 8-10 seconds.

My machine is a 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 Compaq Presario, 18 month old, O/S is Windows XP Home Edition, with SP 2.
Anyone out there have any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Older Fujitsu Lifebook N series notebook with Vista. Recently fans (2) both seem to operate at top speed as soon as the computer boots up, even from a cold start. Tried installing speedfan but it triggered a BSOD when scanning the hardware every time I tried to use it. Then tried Core Temp, that wouldn't install either. No BSOD, said something was blocking it, but I disabled Adaware and AVG. Laptop appears to operate normally except for the fan noise. Attached the hijackthis files. TIA.

ps...should have mentioned I took it apart, cleaned the fans (not that dirty), and re-pasted the CPU and heat sink.

Over the last couple of weeks I have noticed that my notebook PC (DELL Inspiron 700m) hard drive has been running more or less 100% of the time the machine has been powered on. Task Mgr/Processes indicate that "msiexec.exe" is running at 99 and CPU usage is at 98-100%.
At the same time, I have also had several incidents of "about:blank" pages in IE (6.0) opeing themselves automatically. During a 30 minute period last night a total of 8 pages opened (I had 8 IE windows opened automatically).

1) are these two issues related?

2) I have checked that "Windows Installer" in Systems is set to "Manual".

3) I also try to turn off the msiexec.exe in "Processes", but it turns it self on within seconds again.

4) I have run multiple spyware software applications trying to find and delete the cause of the "about:blank" problem, which I think is a browser hijack, but to no use. I've run Webroot's "SpySweeper", SpyCatcher and F-Secure's "BlackLight" and Trend-Micro's online "HouseCall". Each of them found malware, but didn't solve the problem.

5) I am using Microsoft OneCare with Defender as my antivirus and malware protection.

I'm at a loss and unless someone has a solution I don't see any other way but to reformat in order to solve the problem.

Please help, someone.

I just received a new HP 22-b052 AIO yesterday and as soon as I started it up, I could hear the fan on the left side (or right side from the back) constantly running. The sound from far away is unnoticeable but when I'm in front of it, it is loud. Is this normal for HP AIO (All in One)? I called HP tech support and spent hours recovering and reinstalling BIOS, running hardware tests but to no avail.  Also, could I replace the fan? Is this PC customizable, would I be able to switch out the mobo and CPU (and of course fan)?

I just bought a new toshiba pc i got it last thursday and when im just sitting at the desktop the fan just kicks into high gear constantly running and making noise and then after a few minutes it stops but it also starts back up making the same annoying noise minutes later is the fan suppose to be working so constantly? And the cpu temperature is constantly at 30 degrees or higher is that normal? even when i turn on the pc after its been off for a few hours its still in between the same temperature range that i mentioned earlier. also for example on this pc if i have firefox open and i have photoshop open or any other programs the screen brightness changes slightly dimmer when i switch from one program to another on its own. Im not sure should i take it back im thinking about doing that i cant take the annoying fan and the automatic switching of the screen brightness upon switching application windows is a little strange.

A constatly running fan usually means overheating or a defective fan. You said 30C or higher. The higher is the imporant part, as 30 is not too high

The resulting heat means my laptop sounds like it is trying to take off. I have tried removing .xml files from indexing as has been suggested on my multiple searches. Didn't help at all. Somehow turning off the process if possible is also not a solution in my opinion.

Looking in Event Viewer, I noticed a great many of the following 'Warnings' from the 'Search' source "The protocol host process 8472 did not respond and is being forcibly terminated {filter host process 10000}." The numbers involved change frequently.

Any ideas as to how I can fix this? It's driving me mad. I have attached a screenshot from the process tree area of Process Monitor, it is perhaps relevant.

Have slight problem. Want to set upone of my own photos as desktop background.
Have a couple of my own photos saved in My Pictures, under My Documents.
Worked briefly. Now, when I boot up, my A drive runs constantly, until system comes
up completely. But, as soon as I click on anything on desk top, A drive starts running
again, apparently searching for needed background file?
How/where do I save my own photos for desktop background so that A drive isn't running all the time?

I'm running a Gateway 1GHz, 40GB HD, CDRW, Iomega Zip drive and Windows ME.
If I keep a Zip disk in, with photo I want on it, Drive A is quiet.
Problem began when I tried to change desktop background.

Appreciate any information!!

Please move to correct topic location if I posted under wrong topic!

Thanks

Hi , i recently upgraded my laptops hard drive to a Samsung 840 evo 500GB SSD. Whilst i've noticed a massive improvement in performance there is one little annoyance , the fans on my laptop are constantly going on and off is there a way to combat this and is this a common problem ?

A:installed SSD fan running constantly

Hi Bibbster,

Not a common problem no, if anything after fitting a SSD the fans should come on less as a SSD gives off no heat at all compared to a regular spinner.

Did any bios settings change when you installed it? I would have a look in the bios to see if there are any settings for fans etc.

I am using Windows xp Home Edition, which recently started running VERY slowly. Task Manager tells me that iexplore is running even though I never use IE. On a couple of occasions, IE has spontaneously opened to unfamiliar webpages. I downloaded HijackThis and have begun the process, but I need help deciphering logs and such. I don't want to make a false move. Thanks in advance.

I was downloading a game on steam and left my computer alone so it could finish the download, when I came back every time I clicked anywhere the fans would start to run on max, but since I had to get to school I didn't have time to solve this so I just shut down the computer and decided I would ask my friends for help, when I reopened it, Windows was updating and after the update my laptops keyboard didn't work (excluding the trackpad) and the fans are constantly running on max, can someone please help me I have the new Razer blade 14" (2016)

Have taken delivery of a new desktop pc and it is ok except for the fact that the fan cranks up to (a noisy) full speed when pc switched on and carries on like this until it is turned off.
I queried this with supplier's help desk but they assured me that this is normal?
Should I just accept that it is (normal)?

Can anyone off assistance? I have a dell laptop and a friend of mine was using it over the weekend. This person was accessing 'myspace' and 'myspace im' which I think surfaced this problem. When I started up my computer I got this STOP error: IRQL_NOT_GREATER_OR_EQUAL

So I inserted my windows xp pro OS disc and tried to re-install. Well now, the egg timer is constantly running when I start up the system and when I look at the performance, it's at about 45% when I have nothing running. And sometimes the STOP error comes up at start up.

I have prepared a HJT log file, a task manager screenshot and a system32 screenshot. The rundll32.exe icon is not the standard white icon or icon with a symbol, but looks more like a piece of paper. Hi,

I am running Vista Home Basic. I have good computer knowledge and skills although certainly not an expert. I can't understand why I am constantly getting the low C: memory warning. I store all pictures and music, etc. on a separate hard drive, and I have carefully gone over my program files and uninstalled any that didn't seem worthwhile. I have a 70 gig hard drive which seems like lots and is more than any computer I've owned before. Sometimes it seems that if I delete files, etc. to clear up memory and the next time I come back to my computer I'm out of memory again. I often get the "could not complete back up due to insufficient memory" notice. I'm unclear on what is being backed up and if this is part of the problem.

I have 3 GB of RAM and the Virtual Memory is currently set at 3242 MB

Help!

Thanks.

Hi and welcome to vista forums

WE could use some info on your computer like how much memory you have, but I think you are running low on "virtual memory". Virtual memory or page file is set in the system control panel>advanced settings. Dependant on the amount of RAM you have it should be set for between 1 and 2 times the amount of ram. If you run out of RAM more and more things are stored in the page file untill it too is out of space. thats when y ou get the low memory warning.

If you like I can walk you thru the settings and where to change them, just tell us how much ram you have.

hope this helps

I am using a HP Pavilion dv6 with an Intel i7-2630 QM, 6 GB RAM and AMD Radeon 6770M GPU (along with Intel Graphics Card). In the past few days, anytime I open a program, such as Mozilla, Chrome, Spotify, the computer's fans kick on. This has never happened in the past. Usually I have to run a video through the browser or play a game for the fans to turn on. The fan turns on when on AC power and when on battery. When this happens, the CPU usage is around 5-7% with 40-50% RAM usage (no change from the past). I am not sure why all of the sudden the laptop's fans are turning on. I have looked at the processes and do not see anything out of the norm and the average temp of the CPU's is about 51-54 C. I have not installed any new software in the past several months. Any input or ideas about why this may be happening would be greatly appreciated. I use Process Explorer and Core Temp to monitor my computer as well as Norton 360 as antivirus software. Thanks.

version 6.6.6002 service pack 2 build 6002
x86-based pc
bios hp f.12 8/28/2008
smbios version 2.4

My fan has recently started running almost constantly and loud. I have gone into msconfig and gotten rid of everything that doesn't need to run. The computer will do this when stationary with fan area hanging off of table exposed. When I sleep it or shut it, the light on the exterior of the computer (that says hp) stays on and the fan runs on high. I don't believe there is dirt in there. Around the same time, I noticed number lock and the keypad on the side stopped working.

could part of this be that I have never replaced the battery?

What else could it be?

I have run every spyware program known to man (malwarebytes, superantispyware, etc)

Thanks in advance

Hello! my old computer's HD is Running constantly. i cant get it to stop work. is it a hardware problem or software? and how can i solve it? thanks for your help

A:My Harddrive is running constantly

There's quite a few things that can have that effect. Let's start simple and work up.

How old is the hard drive?

I would check the overall space of the hard drive, good practice to have at least 20% free. The HD may also be fragmented, you can check the status of both of these from the disk defragment application. If the HD space is lower then 20%, you may want to delete temporary files from Disk cleanup.

Next I would check the RAM and Virtual memory amount, it depends on what system your running, but a good baseline is anywhere from 2gb to 4gb of ram, and 1.5x your current ram amount = virtual memory. You can confirm these from the Task Manager, under the Performance tab.

If those come up clean and fine, you may want to do a quick virus scan. I personally recommend Malwarebytes, you can find the most current version from their website at Malwarebytes : Free anti-malware download

The reason we ask this or do not respond to your requests is because that would remove you from the active queue that Techs and Staff have access to. The malware staff checks the forum for postings that have 0 replies as this makes it easier for them to identify those who have not been helped. If you post another response, there will be 1 reply. A team member, looking for a new log to work may assume another HJT Team member is already assisting you and not open the thread to respond. That is why I have made an edit to your last post, instead of a reply. Long story of what's happened so far:

So about a week ago I was on firefox and using google search. I scrolled through the page and my firefox window closed. internet explorer opened for a brief second, it then closed itself, then a program called XP security 2011 downloaded itself and started running a virus scan. I just assumed it was a fake (I've had this sort of thing happen on other computers in the form of Spy Sheiff and something else years before). My internet was hijacked and I couldn't open any page in any browser. So I turned the computer off, ran malwarebytes anti-malware in safemode and it found a few things. I deleted everything that came up and I turned the computer back on in normal mode and I ran into a few other problems.

While the internet now worked, whenever I tried to open (mostly) any other program, it would ask what program I wanted to open it with (the list of the default programs). After a while of searching, I came across a registry fix for it, downloaded it and it worked.

Some point after that though I just ran more scans in Malwarebytes, and whenever I boot the computer normally it runs super slow. I pin pointed this to services.exe using the task manager but from what I read it seems that it's a genuine file that has malware attached to it. It's hogging every bit of CPU that isn't being used by everything else. If I run the computer in safe mode it might run at 80-90% which is definitely better then 100, but it&... Read more

Hoping to get some guidance with an issue I am working on with a friends laptop. I was asked to clear adware as it was affecting performance of the laptop and also fix an issue with Windows installer.

The Adware was pretty easy to get rid of completely but the issue with the installer is proving to be a real stinker. It seems anytime a Microsoft application is launched, Windows Explorer, MS Word, IE Explorer the installer launches briefly then disappears.

Checking the event log shows an Event ID 1001: Detection of product '{91CA09409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}', feature 'HandWritingFiles' failed during request for component '{456D1A62-*DC1F-45C2-910F-FCDB0DCE4562}

I've done a bunch of looking around and can already state the users all have correct permissions per Microsoft support article, KB911682. I'm at a loss on this one.

Also all the shortcuts for Office 2003 are not operating properly and trying to execute repair from the application results in an error indicating the action cannot be performed because the application is not installed. I can confirm Microsoft Office IS installed properly. The only way to launch the app is to do so by double clicking winword.exe directly.

Any thoughts? Appreciate the help!!

A:Windows installer constantly running

Follow up question to hopefully get someone engaged.

Would it be better to uninstall and reinstall office 2003 or remove and reinstall the windows installer??

Hello!

I have something that is constantly running on my laptop. I've been reading here for several days and have done the following but still something running. Every time I click on a button try to open something, i get see a (Not Responding) message in the title bar; i wait, and sometime wait & wait, then eventually it opens.

So here's what I've done so far... uninstalled McAfee, I donwloaded & ran MPCR.exe twice, I installed Microsoft Security Essentials (ran a full scan, found nothing). I also uninstalled LOTS of unused software, went to the msconfig startup tab & unchecked things I knew I didn't need to be started automatically.

I've read enough that I know you need the hijack log, so here it is:

New to these forums, so forgive me if I don't know all the formalities.

At random times all of my computer's actions take exceptionally longer than normal; boot up takes 3 or so minutes, a crackling noise and freezing occur when playing games/videos and the task manager shows a 50% CPU usage, even when nothing is going on. I regularly scan with MalwareBytes and avast!.

On a previous occasion, I removed the case cover and booted up and everything was fine, but I think it might have just been a fluke. For the sake of fixing this problem however, let's not rule out overheating.

Below is a HijackThis log.

A:CPU constantly running at 50% at random times

SpeedFan is also showing one of the CPUs running at 100% and the other running normally (basically 50%), so is something wrong with that one CPU?

Edit: Did a full system MalwareBytes scan and nothing came up. Running a scan with avast! and the speed of the scan just gets slower and slower (started at 50 mb/sec now at 20 mb/sec).

Hey All

I'm new here but after spending most of today searching the net I was impressed by the activity here. I don't know if this is the correct forum... but the XP forum hasn't been used in over a week.

I'm running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 (build 2600) on a 2.4Ghz P4.

A couple of days ago I noticed a lot of HD activity... I thought it was another update being DL'd and didn't worry about it until I noticed that it was still happening when I was offline... in fact it ran all night constantly lighting the HD led. I read that some leds are "more sensitive" and that it could be normal Windows activity. I've had this machine 3 years and it isn't "normal".

I ran DiskMon and verified that there is almost constant writing going on. I noticed in task manager that winlogon is running constantly and at high overhead. I verified with Process Explorer that winlogon is from the system32 folder. Of course... the two conditions may not be related...

WTM

I run McAfee Virus Scan, Webroot Spysweeper, and StopZilla all the time. I use Mozilla almost exclusively... rarely MSN9's browzer... and almost never run IE (although MSN 9 is a glorified front end for it). I run AdAware SE from time to time (I'm scanning now)... and today I have even ran Spyware Doctor. I took a quick look at winlogon with Hex Workshop but didn't see any unusual ASCII... and the dates looked fine.

Let me know if there is somet... Read more

I've scrubbed for spyware, viruses and defragged. Now running Win XP SP2, 1 GB RAM, P4 3GHz CPU with Kerio Personal Firewall, NOD 32 and Sunbelt SpySweeper.

FWIW, the drive runs constantly, even at the DOS screen before loading Win XP Safe Mode (keeps running in Safe Mode); also runs at normal WinXP logon screen before entering password.

Odd thing, it seems to run apps comfortably fast. The CPU load seems quite low. I just can't figure out why the drive runs all the time. I've looked at the data from Sysinternals Filemon - virtually all the activity is the E: drive (SATA drive described above).

Any thoughts?

A:Hard Drive Running Constantly

There are various Windows maintenance processes that run whenever other aps are not consuming all the resources so a constantly running HD is normal.

Hi,

Every time I start my PC it boots up very slowly and once I've loggd in, everything takes an age to open and the PC is generally sluggish. I've noticed that in Task Manager's process list, explorer.exe is running at 99% even when I've got no programs running!

I've tried ending the process and restarting it but this has no effect. I've run a virus scan with Norton AV and it found nothing.

Has anyone got any idea whats wrong?
