IE 11 not opening tile app in windows 8

Q: IE 11 not opening tile app in windows 8

IE 11 will not open from the start screen in the apps. So , I can not see my frequents or see the star to click to my favorites. From start screen, can only open IE in desktop, but does not show place to "search" in the middle
of the screen, but at the very top in a smaller search space. Below is a larger search space for BING. I can use IE 11 in the desktop. I am using Windows 8. Main problem is that I can not get to the App view. I did take out the Skype a few days ago that
came with Window 8. Have set a time about 6 hours from now to download Windows 10. I had tried earlier today, but would not work. Program said other updates were being entered, and could not do both at same time. I am planning to download the latest Skype
in a few days.

Hi I am not sure if this belongs on this thread and I have seen possible solutions but I don't know if they are what I need for my issue.
I have a Windows 8.1 Desktop (HP) and not an upgrade from Windows 8 (I don't think so at least).
Every so often I can not open the tiles.
Instead it tries to open and maybe the top bar appears then it will return to the home page where the tiles and apps are. T
he Mail tile (Hotmail) is usually the one I open and that will either attempt to open but won't work or just not open.
I can get onto the desktop from the desktop tile and I have noticed the mail tile icon is on the task bar of the desktop. When I click on the icon it won't open.
I then try other tiles, including the live ones which are updating the news etc but they will not open. These icons also appear on the desktop tool bar.
I have only found that restarting the PC allows me to get the tiles/apps open.
Luckily each time I have restarted the tiles work as expected.

I have seen problems others have with tiles not opening and the issue seems to be something to do with going from Windows 8 to 8.1 and I bought the PC with 8.1 installed.
The issue occurred again on Sunday 9th November, the day before it was fine.
Before I tried to open the tile, there was a java update required and I ran that - not sure if thats connected to it.
With the icons appearing on the desktop although still not opening I am not sure whether the tiles are opening but not completely or it is something mor... Read more

Having trouble with Live Tiles. I'm trying to open up Live News and weather tiles. I am able to open the start menu and see that they are updating with appropriate weather and top stories. When I try to open up the tile however, I am greeted by "An error occurred. Try Refreshing" but to no avail does it solve the issue.

I am new to Windows 8, and on the tile display, when I touch a tile, i.e. the weather tile, a black screen appears with Accuweather.com in the middle; this lasts about a second, then the tile window display reappears. I would expect that the Accuweather.com website would appear, but it never does. Other tiles act the same way, but some apps are executed when the tile for them is touched.
Is this a bug, or am I doing something wrong?

Should Windows end its live tile? I've recently got rid of them - so to speak. They're still on the screen but not visible. I've just got the icon's for each app I use. The screen looks clean and light and seems to react a bit quicker. Anyway having done so I realised its just not necessary to have those floating tiles - more Window(s) dressing than practical. What do other users think?

I upgraded yesterday and it took almost nine hours! I lost my internet connections but after another call for updates it was recovered..
My concern at present is that I have the "store" tile but cannot get to the "store" as it blips and goes to blue. Another thing is some of the tiles on the start screen have a white cross on a black circle. When clicked they warn you cannot access the app and should consult with the System Administrator to remedy. As I am the only user who do I consult with? If anyone can help me I would be grateful...

Yes, I understand that to upgrade from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 you must go through the Store in the Modern UI/Metro environment, but, well into the first day of the Windows 8.1 upgrade release, the initial tile for that upgrade is still saying:
'Windows 8.1 Preview'.

That threatens implications that I'd rather not contemplate.

Is anyone else seeing '..Preview' on the Store tile?
Has anyone ignored the Preview reference and chosen the download link beneath it?

A:Store's Tile Still Says 'Windows 8.1 Preview' On Day One

I had this same preview tile this morning. I didn't intend to install it, expecting to get a download link so I could see what the link said. Well, I clicked it and the install started immediately - took a good while, but the install into full 8.1 went well.

Well, just after posting this, I finally managed to fix this problem. Here is how I did it if anyone else runs into this issue.

1. Run regedit
2. Go to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop"
3. Locate the "LogicalViewMode" and "Mode" keys
4. Bring up the Windows Task Manager.
5. Kill the "explorer.exe" task. Any changes to the keys made above will not take while explorer.exe is running.
6. Change "LogicalViewMode" to 3 and "Mode" to 5.
7. In the Windows Task Manager, click the File > Run New Task option, type in "explorer" and push enter
8. Your icons should be returned to their normal state.

Just upgraded to 8.1 and noticed the new dynamic tile color feature. For non-metro apps, it seems that there's some algorithm that picks out the "primary" color of your legacy icons, then makes the tile background a similar color.

This has the benefit of making tile backgrounds for non-metro programs more colorful, but the algorithm really seems to like a particularly hideous shade of orange, and it also makes no effort to avoid picking tile colors that cause your icons to disappear into the tile background. There are certain tiles on my start screen where you actually can't even see anything but a solid orange or purple or blue tile with a vaguely discernable shape in the middle.

It's a headache, and I would love it if I could just turn this thing off. The neutral tones of the Windows 8 tile colors were far preferable.

Someone please tell me they found a registry value that I can change/destroy so that I don't cringe whenever I hit the start button.

I am really enjoying Windows 8 so far. It took some getting used to, and I still believe it is more ideally suited for touch-interface, but I still enjoy using it and updating my computer usage habits because of it.

That being said, I don't seem to understand the Mail app that comes on the start page. I have added my accounts, and can check them accordingly, and I really enjoy it. But when I get new mail, I get a popup in the upper-right hand corner of the screen about the new mail. My question is this:

Can I make the Mail Icon show my new mail, (in a live-tile fashion) much like when I get new messages the friends live-tile shows those messages. Is that possible? Even if it is just the title/subject, or author that would be a nice customization and benefit to me.

Thanks for reading, and sorry if this belongs in the customize section and not here.

Hello,

I'm using Windows 8.1, and I have accidentally deleted the SkyDrive App Tile and am trying to find a way to restore it.

What happened was that I deleted the SkyDrive shortcut in the start menu, only to realise that doing this also deleted the SkyDrive App Tile in Metro View.

Is there a way to restore the SkyDrive App Tile? I have tried searching for SkyDrive under Apps but it isn't there, presumably because it is integrated into Windows 8.1. I also found the SkyDrive menu that the SkyDrive App Tile is a shortcut to under PC Settings, but it doesn't look like it's possible to make a shortcut to it directly from Metro View.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Sometimes when I type keys that require CTRL+ALT (ALT-GR) I hit a key by accident that completely messes up my desktop. It tiles all my windows, and as I usually have a lot open each window becomes microscopic and it's just a nuisance to clear it all up. Only a few days ago I realised that both my computers (windows 8.1) had live tiles enabled in the metro interface, and that they had been downloading things for them (various new pictures to be displayed on the tiles, and alos adverts for apps available in windows' store. I disabled the live tiles (there was only one, the windows store) on both machines as soon as I realised this. So they won't be wasting any more of my bandwidth downloading png pictures of apps I don't care about.
This however got me thinking: If the windows store shows adverts, and these adverts are shown (atleast in some sense) through the live tiles, then could these tiles end up distributing viruses? As far as I could tell the only things be downloaded (and wasting a small amount of my bandwidth) were png images, but part of me wonders if flash animations (with hidden exploits) or exe files could be downloaded and run like this? Has this ever happened yet? I have no particular cause to think it has happened to me but the fact that these tiles exist like this and do what they do makes me think it could happen some day? If it could then that would be a huge problem waiting to happen, viruses delivered through a running function on a computer that most people would never even think to look at.
Would it be possible? Has it ever happened yet? The same concern would probably affect windows 10 as well, because it too has live tiles.
Thanks

A:Could an infection be delivered via a live tile in windows 8/8.1 ?

Tile images are usually hosted by programs so in order to get malicious one would require you to install one of those. You can still create one of your own and for example poll data from
website. It usually involves downloading image and small config file. In this case the host is IE.

Technically it could be possible to send some malformed config which then uses some vulnerability within system itself in order to inject malicious code. Still would still require you or some other program in your computer to create new live tile. I don't think it would be very useable case since you already have an access to the system at that point.

I don't think its going to be any less secure then just surfing over web. Microsoft controls Windows Store so there shouldn't be any problem with that matter of malicious data being send over their channels.
If there were some major security issues with this I think they would have been noticed at this point. But this is majorly just speculation on my part.

@EDIT

So as Didier Stevens pointed out, live tile hosts(Apps) are run inside sandbox environment. Most malicious active would require to escape that sandbox or use
some other exploit. As with the regular programs, user discretion is still advised when installing apps.

I'm personally going to try to make this simple, and yet cover all of my problems in a small thread.

I updated windows 8.1 pro with wmc from store.

I had NO problems, received no error messages, had no dc's, the power didn't shut off, the download didn't stop .. literally nothing went wrong. After update everything worked fine. All the apps are downloaded and were working fine.

But,

After 2/3 months since updated, I suddenly noticed that every live tile / folder / app / game / setting etc. which were working fine, now not working.
When I clicked on any tile, nothing happened. It just went to a blank green screen because my background color is green. It appears on the left upper corner as opened but doesn't run. When I click, I am send back to Start Screen or Desktop. Even Store and Windows Setting stopped working. So, naturally i started checking the web for answers, but couldn't find a solution to the exact problem i was having. I saw countless posts of people saying "Just uninstall / re-install the apps" but at first, I couldn't get my App store app to run. Again, it was just blank after several minutes of waiting. I was able to download it after using the search bar menu on the right side of my computer, and was able to start installing some apps.
NEXT PROBLEM:
So i thought that everything was going to be ok, but then I ran into another problem where some of the apps wouldn't install, and I received an error message with the code/number of 0x80070002... Read more

Where do I start? I still love XP but I guess since I've been purchasing computers since 1988 I should have learned nothing is static about computers. Somehow I uninstalled the MAIL tile from the Metro Screen. I went to the MS Store but didn't see it there. Did I also uninstall the whole Outlook.com feature?

Also, these lame replacements from Outlook.com, Yahoo and Gmail. I guess there's nothing we can do now to send really nice emails with graphics such as we could with Outlook using Word as our editors?

Is Thunderbird a good replacement and how does that work?

I cannot find a Gmail app at the store although I found a Yahoo app. How lame these programs look. I don't even see a place for contacts ... yet!

I appreciate your help and I'm afraid you may see me here often. After using XP for 6 years and knowing all the tips and tricks and how to get into and around all issues, 8 makes me feel like a newbie all over again. Hate it!

Thanks, jack

Hi Jack!

Welcome to Eightforums!

The MAIL tile is part of the "Agenda, Mail and persons" tile. So search on "Agenda" and you should be able to find it.

Isn't it great that Microsoft can even make the 'nerds' feel like they are newbie all over again? I loved the feeling myself! Beeing able to search the net for an answer to an obvious easy question. The feeling that you have to find it all out again. To be able to make the journey again..... I'm loving every minute of Windows 8!

So, my advise to you is. Don't give up. Give Windows 8 a change. Don't hate it that you feel like a newbie all over again. Love every second of it, because it probably will be another few decades before you can experience it again.

Most likely a quirk of 8.1.x that has not been found yet. Majority are using Desktop mode, so they never notice these issues. I would submit a ticket to MS, showing the issue. You will have to also show that all programs are installed and able to run (Screen print of Event log showing where you ran the program, then stopped it.

Dear reader(s),

I have been customizing my Start Screen on Windows 8.1 with OlbyTile version 0.9.1.

It seems to be working fine. Although, when I upload a small tile image to the program (30x30), while one would anticipate that the image should appear in its smaller state in the Apps List, instead it looks like this:

Is anyone else experiencing a problem as such? As you can see, all the tiles I modified have the selected colours applied in OlbyTile, but the images all consist of Internet Explorer icons. A reinstall may be a reasonable course of action, that or the creators need to update OlbyTile. Still, if anyone has a solution for this problem, please let me know, thanks.

I have noticed over the past 4 weeks that my Windows Store App Live tile displays a number of updates for example 19 - when you go into the store and click on updates there may be only 14 or 15 updates.

I know changes have been made to Skype updates and this is no longer available to update via the app - have there been any other changes I should be aware of? This is not just on one device but 4 in the same household. None of the Live tiles display the number of updates actually being available?

Previously the live tile and actual updates available have always matched?

Confused and would appreciate any help

Hello Carpediem, and welcome to Eight Forums.

When Store apps are opened, they use the full display of the monitor they are opened on and cannot be changed. If you set your displays to act like one display (ex: Eyefinity), then the Store app will naturally fill all of them.

The only way to prevent this is to not have all of your displays act as one display.

If you have an image that is larger enought to display on all monitors at once, then you will still be able to set it as your desktop background for all monitors. This doesnt help wth the desktop itself though.

A:Graphical tile glitch on Windows 8.1 (tiles get cropped)

The tiles in the 1st column take too much space vertically so windows scrolls all the tiles down. That's what's happening.

Quick solution : drag the big weather tile and drop it on the right (a column of its own). It should work properl now.

I have upgraded from Windows 8 to 8.1. After doing so and making sure my accounts are all setup, I have found that I can not get the mail tile to act "live". I have verified it is set to live by right-clicking and seeing that link state "turn live tile off". I tried doing that and then turning it back on. I have tried rebooting. But the tile just isn't live. My other live tiles (news, finance, weather, store, etc) all seem to be live. It is only mail that I am having a problem with.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve

A:Mail Live Tile not Working after Windows 8.1 Upgrade

OK. Not sure what is going on. My Yahoo Mail account would not allow me to set it up as get messages as they occur. I had to set it up as check every 15 minutes. My Gmail account did not have this issue. But still not getting the live tile to work. I saw 15 apps needed updating now, so did that (mail was one of them), but still no live tile working for mail.

I finally decided to install Yahoo Mail because I needed the live tile for that account. But that live tile was not working either. I had people send me emails, and nothing. They sent to Yahoo and to Hotmail. Then after about 4 hours, all of a sudden I started getting the live tiles updating. I have no idea why.

I removed Yahoo Mail, and still the live tile worked for mail. I waited until the next morning to verify it was all good and it is still working.

So marking as solved. Not sure what solved it, but there you go.

I recently reset my Lenovo laptop which is running Windows 8.1, using a recovery USB that I created when I initially bought it. After doing a full reset, I noticed that I can no longer rename tile groups on the start menu. I hold ctrl+mwheeldown to zoom out, and can still rearrange the tile groups, but if I right click on one, nothing happens. In the past, doing so would allow me to give the group a name (eg: naming a group of tiles for various IDEs as 'Development'). I know this shouldn't be the end of the world, but it's really bothersome considering I reset the PC to start fresh with a clean slate. I did not have this issue before I did the reset.
Any help getting this feature to work properly again would be greatly appreciated, and if you need anymore info just let me know what you need and how to acquire it for you and I'll do so asap!

You may want to try Stardock Software's Metro Mix. It will allow you to run Metro Apps from the desktop. The problem with Metro. Is that it uses a mix of Javascript & html5. A lot of apps in the Microsoft App store are poorly written. So in turn, you have issues.

Some have found that the problem is also as simple as the third party Internet Security or Firewall software that they may be using. See metro apps can not connect to internet! for further help.

Prior to upgrading to Windows 10 Phone (Mobile?), when I pinned a web site to the start page, the tile contained an icon representation for the web site. That made it easy to know which tile to press to go to that web site directly.
After up grading to Windows Phone 10, all of the tiles now show the E from Edge itself. Now I have a bunch of tiles all showing the same icon, Edge's E, making it hard to know what tile is a shortcut to a specific web site.
How do I get the icon for the web site back onto the tile.

Hello guys,

Recently the windows store stopped working for me, well I say recently but I hadn't used it in a long time till recently so I don't know for how long it has actually been out of commission.

When I try to open it it will flash for a second before quickly closing. Searching the internet for solutions has shown me that this is a known issue.

So far I've tried a large number of things to try and fix it:

-Tried Windows Powershell
-Tried Win store Troubleshooter
-Tried making a new Microsoft account
-Tried using a local account
-Tried clearing the store cache and deleting its folders
-Tried messing around in regedit thinking it may be a permission issue
-Tried Win store reset
-Tried disabling firewall + antivirus and trying powershell + reset
-Tried a clean install of Windows 10

Nothings worked so far, so any new solutions would be greatly appreciated

Cheers.

My parents bought a PC last year running W8. I set up there talktalk E mail accounts in the W8 Native E mail client from the Mail tile at the start screen without any problem. All worked fine until recently when in order to download an app they had to register an Outlook E Mail address. Not sure if they had updates applied as well but they had to start logging on to the PC at boot up every time using a password. In an effort to resolve this they restored the PC to an earlier time which has cured the logging on issue (ie no password required) but when they access the Mail tile from the start screen it is an outlook E Mail account that comes up. I have tried without success logging into this outlook account and then adding the talktalk accounts. I even tried using my own account but could not add that either.
All they want is to click the Mail tile and get there talktalk accounts to come up just as before (no outlook or hotmail or anything else). Is there a way to reset the E Mail client/tile in W8 back to what came with PC so that I could set it up just as I did when the PC was purchased. They are running W8 and do not wish to restore back to factory settings as they have a few other bits and pieces of software installed.
If they upgrade to W8.1 will they be forced into using a password to log on every time ?
Any help in restoring the E Mail back to the native W8 client would be much appreciated

I don't think any of those programs are causing this. Try searching for Store in the Metro Start Screen and pin it back.

If that does't work, you can try this: SFC /SCANNOW Command - Run in Windows 8

Or you can try refreshing or resetting your system:

Refresh Windows 8

I just installed windows 8 Pro on desktop, now in metro start screen, I click on the music tile go through to find some music I want to listen to and when it plays it opens this Xbox music thing. Why and is this normal?

A:music tile

LoL.. sheeples.. Xbox+metro= multiple platform support = phones that become the laptops (docking) = app store = revenue channel.
They thought this through while they were high on cocaine and champagne like every good corporate meeting.
It will take a awhile for competitors to build placement tiles since they have to learn the new interface and recompile their code.
MS's main competitor is Apple. Ms = Xbox+hyper visor, Pc = Steam, Apple = Riaa + Mpaa.

I remember when the FBI was busting down doors because people where using betamax to copy broadcasted tv shows, beating the children and shooting their dogs. Criminals = whatever stops the money flowing to the appointed authorities.

I wonder if they sell folk music on Xbox music center, hahahahaha... I'm like the 1 guy that searched for it.
I guess the old timers still prefer a smokey bar with live music.

-------------
Try installing Winamp for a push and forget solution, not that I like lamas or anything, but they are fun to pet.
You are probably wanting streaming music, and there has never been a convergence of streaming music stations.
Except shoutcast and a few other .com's. Someone will have to converge all their API's into one app without pissing someone off, which is VERY VERY VERY hard to do.

Hey guys!
I have a weird problem with my Chrome and I hope someone can help me:
When I first installed Windows 8 there was the IE tile, with lighter blue background and white icon. Then I installed Chrome, at first start I used it as my default browser, mostly in W8 mode, sometimes in desktop mode, but it always had the grey background tile with the Chrome icon. I wanted to make new tiles for my non-metro apps with OblyTile, and because I use IE sometimes I made one for that too, but after that my Chrome tile became a standard non-metro style tile with blue bg and smaller icon, using it first opens the desktop then the metro-mode chrome, and the original IE tile (I kept it from the beginning) reversed to the original, blue bg, white icon style, but Chrome is the default browser.

Can you help me to reverse Chrome to the gray bg tile and make it open the metro-mode without first opening the desktop?

Thanks in advance!

Hello fellow humans!!

Alright, so I was wondering what my Main Panel on my Star Screen is missing but I couldn't figure it out.. Until I wanted to check the time. Usually, I would just do a double finger gesture on my Microsoft Touch Mouse and boom, time shows. Or just check the time when I'm already on desktop mode. This time however, my batteries ran out and I was on my Start Screen wondering what the time was. Oh, yea, I was super lazy too. So I wondered why didn't Microsoft make a time/clock app yet? It would make perfect sense to have one. Nonetheless, I know we can't always have everything.. So I'm asking you guys, are you using any apps for this exact reason? Have you got any suggestions? All I want is a tile with the time shown all over it.. No need for other information, like date or anything, just the time.. I'm asking you because, well, I don't know, I just like posting here instead of reading reviews for every single app in the store.

Thanks in advance!!

Does anyone know why this is happening and how to prevent it from continuing.

Thanks.

On the live photos tile on the start screen. How can I determine which pictures it shows and which not to?

Can anyone please tell me how to customise this tile?
Of the hundred of photos in the My Pictures folder it shows just 4 poor ones on a loop.

All help much appreciated

In Paint that is not possible. You can only open one image (file) in one session.

You can import an image to be pasted to another image using Paste from feature:

Trying to resize some of my tiles on the Windows 10 start menu. I have added Outlook 2016 and want to set it to Wide but the only options are Small & Medium.

How do I get all the options on the resize?

A:Tile Size limited

Size options are limited to certain Apps only, default Apps all can be resized to 4 different sizes but the ones we add to Start only have two options.
EDIT: Have a look at this tutorial:Tiles - Resize on Windows 10 Start Menu - Windows 10 Forums

So I understand that the photo app gets my photos from my picture library and then just randomly scrolls through them, however there is a specific folder of photo that I don't want to be shown. Is there a way to make it so it doesn't show that folder when flicking through the various photo I have or do I have to move the folder to another location?

A:Live photo tile

Take it out of My Pictures (e.g., just put it in your C: User folder--top level--like My Pictures) and give it a non-picture related name (not sure if that's necessary). I have some snips that I don't want to see on my start screen, and that's what I do--use a folder named Snips.

Hey guys,

Are there any apps that provide a battery status as a live tile and in the taskbar? The only app I could find so far is batter bar however, in my opinion, it looks quite ugly.

Thank you for your help.

A:Battery Tile and Taskbar App

Go to the Windows Store and type battery status. You will find a number of them there.

If you want the IE tile in Start to always open the desktop version of IE 10, then you have to make the 2 settings shown in the picture. You get there from Internet Options > Programs tab. Then do not forget 'Apply'.

Do you know of an easy way to change the colour of the User Tile border?

A:User Tile Border

I take it you mean on the login screen? I've wanted to change that for so long, but it's picky with the transparency and such. I guess you'd need to find a way to patch authui.dll, and then reshack it. If only I knew of a good patch or hex edit or something.
