So over the past 2-3 weeks I kept noticing that my battery kept dying even though I would shut it down (yes window > shutdown) the computer with a full battery. The next evening I would power up and see that the battery was at 20% from full charge. This is a BRAND NEW as in <2 months XPS 9550. I checked my event log and WHAT THE H@#$??? It is absolutely filled with Dell Foundation Service and Dell Product Registration events all saying " Power event Handled Successfully by the service." Clearly it is not.. The stupid things run every 10 seconds. So when I think I am powering down my computer, it is being blocked by these services and actually just going to sleep... but it actually isn't sleeping. Its waking up every 10 seconds. Can anyone PLEASE help me determine the issue. Apparently according to update service everything is up to date.

Hi I have a dell 3647 I I keep getting a message from dell foundation services installer yet when I check it says I have latest update. I run win pro 7 . can anyone help this stop?
You can uninstall Dell Foundation Services from your computer by using the Add/Remove Program feature in the Window's Control Panel.
On the Start menu (for Windows 8, right-click the screen's bottom-left corner), click Control Panel, and then, underPrograms, do one of the following:
Windows Vista/7/8: Click Uninstall a Program.
Windows XP: Click Add or Remove Programs.
When you find the program Dell Foundation Services, click it, and then do one of the following:
Windows Vista/7/8: Click Uninstall.
Windows XP: Click the Remove or Change/Remove tab (to the right of the program).
Follow the prompts. A progress bar shows you how long it will take to remove Dell Foundation Services.
For me to better assist in troubleshooting, please click my DELL-Jesse L and send me a Private Message with the Dell Service Tag number and your Dell Order number. Click my name in blue then on the next page click where it says send private message
I have a 1 month old Dell XPS 8900 and my Avira virus scan flagged Dell Foundation Services as a virus. It came pre-installed with Windows 10 and Dell Foundation Services.
C:\Program Files\Dell\Dell Foundation Services\DCF.Branding.dll
[DETECTION] Contains suspicious code HEUR/APC (Cloud) [WARNING] The file could not be copied to quarantine! [WARNING] Error in ARK library [NOTE] The file is scheduled for deleting after reboot. [NOTE] It is recommended to restart your computer in order to finish the repair.
Has anyone else experienced this? Shall I just let Avira delete this dll? Will that break the application? Should I uninstall Dell Foundation Services? What does Dell Foundation Services do? Is it needed? Thanks
It is probably safe. The HEUR/APC code you see is telling you that it found a process that triggered their heuristics engine. The heuristics engine scans running processes, and flags things that attempt to modify files on your computer.
You may want to also discuss this on Avira's forum:. https://answers.avira.com/en/
I noticed that one of the many bloatware programs that comes with Dell tablets is a program titled "Dell Product Registration." Fortunately, most of these Dell applications can be easily removed through Control Panel. Unfortunately, this particular cannot, it seems. When I click Uninstall, I get an error box that reads 1628: Failed to complete installation.
I don't want this program on my computer. How do I get rid of it? Obviously your uninstaller is not working as intended.
I own a Dell Latitude E6430. I am looking for a Dell Companion 12000mAh or 18000mAh type of device to power and charge my Dell Lattitude E6430 when I am traveling (no outlet available). When I view the compatibility list for both the Dell Companion 12000mAh and the 18000mAh I don't see the Dell Latitude E6430 in either list. I went and purchased the 12000mAh and I am attempting to use this to charge and power my Dell Latitude E6430. It powers my Dell Laptop for about a minute and then quits. Is there a solution for this problem? And/or is there another Dell Companion type device that I can purchase that is listed as 100% compatible with the Dell Latitude E6430? I would like to either get this solution working or purchase the product that is listed as 100% compatible.More replies
I have a Windows 7 home premium Dell laptop that is on the older side. I needed to reformat it, but no longer have the disks it came with. I used a Win7 ISO to reformat, but it wont take the dell product key. I spoke to Dell support, and they stated that I needed to install Windows with a Dell recovery disk for the product key to work. Is there any way to use the existing product key when I no longer have the disk? Or is there any place I can get an ISO for the dell recovery disk?More replies
O NE ON SIDE OF COMPUTOR SAYS ITS INVALID ! And wont aloud me to continue set up ! So I need one that's works properly ! Is it true you can only use them once ?
Is it true you can only use them once ?You can use them as many times as you like, but only on the computer that it came with. If you are trying to install Windows 7 on a Dell computer that came with Windows 7 using the key on the case of computer and it doesn't work you will need to contact Microsoft.Or check that you are using the right numbers. One character wrong and it wont work You mention XP but you tag says windows 7. Which is it as you cannot use a windows XP code to install Windows 7 and vice versa.Stuartmessage edited by StuartS8 more replies
How do I get the Dell Registration off of my daughter's computer - It drives me and her crazy? I have registered and it still keeps popping up?
I would suggest SysInternals AutoRuns, free from Microsoft TechNet.
Download it and SAVE to Documents. RIGHT-click on autoruns.exe, select "Run as Administrator". Allow it to scan (status - lower-left screen). Click on "Logon" tab, look for Dell Registration - or similar entry. Un-check the box. Doing so will disable it. Should you desire, you can always re-check the box making it active again.
Regards. . .
I have a new Dell Inspiron 15R. I keep getting the pop up to register the computer but when I try to fill out the form I get an error. If I decline to register I get an error. If I click "remind me later" I get an error. I called Dell to register it but the pop up is still there. How can I get it to go away. TIA

I'm here to bother you guys about a laptop I've got it's a dell latitude d620. I've been through 2 lcds and 3 ribbons nothing seems to help. the computer boots just fine the problem is with the screen the computer starts but there is a... I dont wanna call it lines but i think its what they are, you can only tell the difference in small areas like the outline of the mouse, or the letters in the menu, overall it looks like it has a bad resolution. but i know that's not it. I've run w7 and multiple linux distros to make sure it isn't it. The bios as updated and I'm sure is not a driver issue it also happens when I'm in the boos menu. I have a dell d630 so every time I've gotten a bad lcd I cross check it with the 630 and so far i've gotten 3 bad lcds from people on ebay. Not to my surprised I've gotten my money back and now the guy even offered to test one and ship me one that works. I received it, but I'm still experiencing the same problem. I've tried 3 different lcd ribbons and nothing what should i do next? I've tried the image in an external monitor and it's just fine. the only problem is with an lcd. I almost feel like the laptop is killing lcds. Thank you for your time
It probably is the GPU showing the death symptoms. Have you tried plugging your laptop through a monitor?2 more replies
I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop with Windows Vista OS. I have a Dell 926 printer interfaced to it via USB. Printer driver is installed and the printer does communicate at times with the computer and does a good job printing. However, intermittently when trying to print a document I'll get a message on the computer that says that communication has been lost and print job failed.
I've checked all connections to make sure they are solid and no debris that might cause this.
That has not corrected the problem.
The other thing that happens is that the document I want to print will stay in the print queue/spooler and if I shut the computer and printer down and restart both it will print the job. And it may continue to print jobs but it's just a matter of time.
Needless to say this is frustrating. I can print several jobs in a row with no problem and then I'll get this "communication has been lost between printer and computer". And I have to go thru the procedure above to get the last job printed.
My wife doesn't understand how this works and will try to print the same job several times with the commo problem and then complains when it won't print.....and then they all print when the above procedure is followed.
Any ideas what is going on??? Any fixes??
The short version of my question is exactly what the topic says-- Can I install a Dell-provided OEM version of Vista on a non-Dell computer?
But, here's the wordier version giving context, if anyone's interested.
About 10 months ago, I guess, I got a Dell Vostro that came with Windows Vista Home Basic. However, I had no interest in Vista (because I already had a Windows machine) and the very first thing I did was install Ubuntu on it. I still have the Vista reinstall disk, though, which, to my memory, hasn't been used.
Now I'm planning on getting a barebones system and upgrading what I see fit. For the time being, I'm going to use the Windows 7 RC, but I'd like to get the uber-great upgrade deal that they're having to pre-order either the Business or Home Premium version upgrade. So, to do that, I'd need an XP installation or a Vista installation. Is there any reason, legal or software-related, that I wouldn't be able to install Vista using that disk that came with the Vostro?
I heard somewhere that sometimes if you try, it'll say something like "This is not a Dell computer, you evil, evil person" and refuse to install, so I wanted to make sure before I pre-ordered the upgrade. I don't want to get the upgrade and have nothing to upgrade, of course.

Two months ago bought a Dell 8900 from Best Buy. After 20 days, it would not start, same with the next 8900 replacement... only fewer days. The first gameware as a replacement did not start at all. The Alienware Aurora worked beautifully for 3 days and then would not start. In the 8900's,,, got the blinking amber lights on the start button. Tech is coming to replace motherboard. What the heck is happening? Could it be the monitor... or the external hard drive or what? Come on Dell,,, what's up? I have a Dell XP Laptop as a back up using the same external hard ddrive.
There is a power issue with the external hard drive.2 more replies
Was given a Dell Optiplex 360 that I found out after getting a nasty virus had a bootleg XP OS
I also did not have any disks with it. I had older disks for a Dell 4600 that I used to wipeout the hard drive and install the new OS. Everything works fine except that I can not load any of the drivers from the second disk, (it was a 3 disk series)
thus at least at this point not able to connect with my cable internet. Cable people told me I needed the drivers.Any suggestions or can it just not be done.
You will have to go to the dell website look under support and then drivers and downloads for your model of computer. If you use the service tag number on the computer it will make sure you get the correct ones you need. For future reference so you wont have this hassle again burn all of the drivers to a cd so you will be all set the next time.
I have a Dell Inspiron 530, XP PRO, SP3, about a year and a half old. Almost since I first got it, every few months or so, when I boot up it hangs on the Dell screen. When I turn it off and reboot, it is fine. I use Rebit to back up everything on an ongoing basis and have an extended warranty from Dell. Is there anything I can do about this, or should do? Thanks for your help.
I would run a memory tester
Download the prebuilt ISO, burn it to CD as an Image, boot from that CD and run the memory test for a couple of hours or overnight to stress test the memory.
I have a Dell laptop but the product key sticker on the bottom is smudged and you can barely read it. I downloaded some key finder programs off download.com and they all seem to get the same serial but it doesnt match the serial on the bottom of my computer when i compare the digits you can read. My dell laptop had xp preinstalled on it and i have the oem disks. So i was wondering if there is no way of finding out what the pruduct key is I've read that dell laptops with the oem disk dont need the product key to reinstall xp because the disk or laptop automaticly recognize each other as being a match or something like that. Is this true and is tere any oter way of finding out what my product key is?

My battery for the above computer has expired and needs to be replaced but I do not know who sells replacement batteries XBT9E1 or compatible ones.
I believe the replacement battery you are after is a CR2032. If in doubt take the flat battery to your electronics store and ask for the equivalent. They're not very expensive.3 more replies

I'm working on a friends Dell PC. First time working with or on Windows 8.
After much aggravation with the locked Hard Drive (which I never figured out), I used an Windows 8 ISO, which would not allow me to "Repair", so after many attempts I clicked the Install and now the PC wants the Product Key for 8. But the old one is still good for months.
I called Dell to get it, but they won't give it out and want us to buy a new disc.
Priority right now is the Product Key.
But help with the locked HDD won't hurt.
Thanks much, Trina
You will need to boot the DVD in UEFI mode.

I plan to reset my dell XPS10 RT8.1 by fully erasing everything then reinstalling windows but I would kindly like to know the following :
1. will it require -after finishing the reset- the product key ? since a product key didn't come with the laptop , is it embedded ???
2.will this process remove the office 2013 RT home & student ? or will it reset it to its original setting ,, since I'm doing this process due to an error where the office won't open and it says license not recognized and I've tried all reasonable ways (refresh , reset , USB recovery disk ) and contacted office for assistance but they said I have to buy a new office ( but I know it can't be installed in RT as u know )
many thanks in advance 4 yr help and advise
I have the XPS 10 and when you reset the system it will put everything back on it just like when you first received it. You do not need a Product Key Code. Below is information on the Office 2013 RT.
Office 2013 RT FAQ;s.
To perform a system reset:
Hold the volume-up button and then press the power button for 2-3 seconds.
Release the power button while continuing to hold the volume-up button until you see a recovery boot message on the LCD.
At this point, you may release the volume-up button and wait for the Windows Recovery Mode to boot.
Follow the onscreen instructions to reset the device. Resetting the device will restore it to out-of-box condition and typically takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete. Once completed, the customer will have to go through the Windows initial setup sequence again.
Really struggling with this - hope someone can help.
A friend's Dell was not accepting updates - I think he had done a 'refresh' as he had not lost any files.
I've now done a full Windows 8 reset / reinstall from within Windows thinking it will sort it. However it still has the same issue. Within System - Windows activation - Product ID: not available
Within PC Setting - Activation - Activation error description not found.
Then because of this the software protection service will not start. Updates won't install etc.
The showkey script I found on this forum says 'OEM Key: Key not found'
There is no key on the machine - I presume it should be found by Windows from the bios but this doesn't see to be happening.
Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I am trying to properly document all of our Windows 7 licenses. When I audit Dell desktops/laptops that were ordered with Windows 7 Pro installed, they all report the same product key. This key does not match the Windows sticker on the device.
Is it standard practice to change the product key to match the sticker when the PC arrives on site?
Also, when I searched for how to change the product key I came upon this page but do not have the Change Product Key option where this article says that I should. Anyone know why?
No you are not expected to change it.
The OEM ( Dell in your case) uses the same key ( may be different between machine models, may not) on all the machines, which is tied to information in the BIOS of those machine to meet the activation requirement.
The key on the side of the machine does not need to be used unless there is an issue with the OEM activation process( the bios loses the signature, the key inside the OS is accidently removed or corrupted). The key on the side requires the machine
to be activated via the Microsoft Activation servers. Thanks, Darrell Gorter [MSFT] This posting is provided "AS IS" with no warranties, and confers no rights. 3 year ago I bought a new Dell Inspiron 14z with windows 8. I have several pratitions on it and I dual boot with Kubuntu. Later I upgraded to windows 8.1 and 10.
Now I just saved some programs and all personal files on a external HDD. I formated my C drive and reinstalled with an USB windows 10. Now I have to enter a product key which I am not able to find under the computer. I tried to run in cmd.exe, Slui 4. I followed the instruction and Microsoft called me, I gave them my installation ID. They just said they can do nothing I even didn't gave me any advice.
I also looked at the receipt, there were a lot of numbers but nothing like a win8 product key.
I tried to look into the PC but I can just open at one place where I think the SSD is located.
Under the laptop I have a Dell sticker with some data and numbers but no win8 product key and a windows 8 sticker with the windows logo.
What can I do now?? Is there a possibility something is some hidden partition that I am able to see in Kubuntu.
( Kubuntu worked after reinstall but now I made some changes and it doesn't work anymore bit I think I'll get it to work)
I hope someone can help me.
The reason behind this is pretty simple (but a bit long-winded).
I own an OEM version of Windows 7 Professional 64 bit which is not tied to a manufacturer which I use in my computer that I built myself. The label states "Licensed for distribution only with a new PC".
A different friend last week bought a Novatech PC and yesterday I tried to install my old retail version of Vista Ultimate 64bit only to find out that the drivers would not run on that OS - I have to install Windows 7.
On ebay there is a 100%er (there are a lot of them) selling a Microsoft Windows 7 Professional 64bit SP1 Full Install COA Product Key HP Stick which states:
HP genuine product key from a de-commissioned machine which will only activate One Desktop/Notebook. Key may show signs of wear. Please note this is not a multi licence key. HP Windows 7 Professional COA. Original Motherboard (Beyond Economical Repair - BER) & Certificate of Authenticity (COA) Licence Key Sticker for activation of software.
My question is, and I've tried to find a definitive answer on this, is in the title: Can I install Win 7 Pro from my own OEM disc but use the Product Key from the ebay purchase (should I go ahead of course)?
I am assuming I'd have to go through the laborious telephone process as I did on mine.
I have also read in some places this would not work and that I would have toi use a full retail version and then use the ebay key to register and activate - is there ant truth in this, or which wou... Read more
What specifically makes you think the Ebay Product Key is "retail"?
Leaving aside the "retail" issue, I'd be very reluctant to buy any Windows key from Ebay. There are just too many variables and too many reports of problems. You might be able to activate and think all is well and then get told you are not legitimate months later. It's a risk I would NOT take. As you note yourself, 100% ratings for software sellers on Ebay are not hard to find.
Not sure if any other people have encountered this issue, but I replaced the HDD on a PC and I have recovery media ordered right from Dell. The recovery USB boots just fine, but the first thing it asks for when loading Windows 8 is a product key. There was no product key given with the recovery media, all that is listed is a bunch of random numbers on the USB tool itself (I'm guessing the part-number P/N). Any idea on how I could get this activated?Thank you in advance.
The win8 key is in the bios.2 more replies
Please take a look at the magnuson-moss warranty act. This is Federal Law. I have gone through Dell *** over a defective XPS 15 Model 9530 Laptop, that started out with an annoying video driver crash, and thanks to DELL's crack team of technical experts has been transformed from an annoying video crash error to a brick, or a $2000 paperweight. Dell replaced the AC Adapter twice, I lost track of how many software and BIOS updates were applied by Dell. Then the motherboard was replaced by Dell Technicians twice, after the first time, the video error returned and then a few days later, the laptop failed to power on, the only thing that worked was the power indicator light, which would illuminate. So Dell sent another crack technician to resolve the issue, and boy did they, now even the power light won't illuminate. So Dell's escalation manager (India) tells me he will check the factory for a "refurbished" XPS 15 9530, to say the least I was not at all happy about a "refurbished" laptop, but I figure its better than the $2000 paperweight sitting on my desk. So four days later I get an email, yeah, not even the common courtesy of a phone call, to inform me that there are no "refurbished" XPS 15 9530 laptops at the factory, but he will keep checking and let me know, gee, thanks for nothing. How the mighty have fallen, there was a time when Dell was one of the best brands you could buy, now they are among the worst... Read moreMore replies
hello to all, i wonder if someone can help.
I have recently got a used Dell Latitude 13 laptop. The previous owner had downgraded the OS from Windows 7 pro to Windows XP pro, When i got the laptop i formatted it and installed Windows 7 Pro again,
The problem i have is i only have 3 days before i need to activate and the sticker on the bottom is so badly faded i cant make out what the product key is!
is there any way i can recover this product key to legally activate this OEM laptop?
hi steve1978, you have a few options either ring Microsoft and explain to them ,order a set of recovery discs from Dell that will have the inbuilt product key or download belarc advisor and see if that shows the key Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit, for software, hardware and security configuration information on your computer. i have a Dell model 160L desktop that i am changing the mb from the OG1548 to a intel D845HV and i need the product spec sheet on i need the pin out and color for both the front panel audio and the front panel lights, on off switch ect. does anyone have this information. Dell is telling me they do not have product specification manuals for there products.
You might check this link out...,http://docs.us.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/op160l/en/index.htm
Not sure it is what you need but it will give you a place to start.
i have a dell xps8500 and the HD died-- so there is no recovery partition-i bought a new HD - i bought a dell win8 recovery media disk that was supposed to install without a product key - i was told by the dell rep that it would just read the product key off my bios -that was untrue - it will not install--- keeps asking for a product key that was not supplied-- how do i get around this-- ive been on the phone with the dell reps and they dont seem to understand the situation--
Thank you for writing to us!
The edition of OS and the DPK injected on MB will not match if the original OS media is not used for installation. In this case you have installed OS with a different or Non-OEM edition of OS, hence it is prompting for Product key .
Kindly private message the service tag to the system.
I have been in the process of trying to remove a zero access virus on my Dell Laptop (see link below)
We have gotten to the point that it may be better to simply reformat and reinstall. Only problem is my laptop did not come with xp disc but does have product id tag on bottom of laptop. Can anyone advise on how to proceed without cd and only product id code?

I have connected my old Dell printer AIO 924 to my new Dell XPS 8500. I can't seem to figure out how to scan. I had no trouble with my old computer, but can't scan since connecting to my new XPS 8500. Can anyone help me please? Do I have to get A new driver? If so, where do I get it? Thanks for any help you can give me.

Can anyone suggest a way to get a dell 770 printer to work on a non dell win98 system?
My friend was given the printer from his friends, but it's a dell and it's pretty muh brand new so he doesn't want to throw it away. It's also better than his current printer
Anyway, he uses the dell install disk but once it begins and runs the setup app it gives a message akin to pirating. Saying something like -this computer does not support dell , or something like - this computer is not a dell.
Can anyone offer advice. I did a search on google and dells' site and here.
I couldn't quite find anything that might lead me to an answer..?

Windows 10 did me in (Show me the way to go home (back to W8.1) - Windows 10 Forums), so I want to throw in the towel and build my Windows 8 system from scratch - I have all my files and list of installed apps with their configs. I ordered and received the Windows 8 recovery disk for my computer from Dell.
Except, when I boot the disk, it prompts me to enter the product key. Isn't it supposed to read it from the BIOS on the motherboard?
I should add: Over the summer, I had to have the motherboard replaced. It, too, came from Dell. I presume the technician had the product key reinstalled, because it was working fine at the time.
When I called Dell, they told me to enable legacy boot and make sure secure boot was off. I did both those things, but got the same result. I see there are a myriad of programs out there that will read the product key, but... You guessed it: You need administrative access. And I lost it, when I upgraded to Windows 10.
I could call Dell, but since my system is now out of warranty, they want to charge me for support.
Can anyone help me with this unmitigated disaster?
Dell discs normally are pre-activated and do not require entering a product key. However, you should have a sticker with the product key to use. If its a laptop its usually in the battery compartment. On a desktop its usually on the back or bottom.
Dell has a free forum with users, like this forum, that will help.
i had posted earlier about a dell win 8 recovery disk that i bought from dell--- i cant get past the
product key screen for it to install. after being in contact with dell tech, they assure me the disk they sent matches my computer which was preinstalled oem win 8 home 64bit. it will not allow me to install because i have no product key--they say they can solve this if i pay them.. after talking to them they seemed to tell me it is a software problem. there is no software besides the disk.. thee re only 3 elements involved-- the disk which they swear is the right disk(taken from my service tag) -- the blank new hard drive--and the bios/uefi---- so i am assuming there must be a setting in the bios that is keeping this OS from installing without asking me for a product key. does anyone have a clue what uefi/bios settings would keep this disk from installing without asking for a product key? all secure boot settings enabled and mode=standard--legacy disabled--boot mode uefi-- like i said--they swear this is the correct disk as i had given them my service tag--
You can choose the Skip product key button on the screen you are on to continue with the install. Once you have Windows installed you can activate Windows. Below is information that may help you resolve the issue.

I have a Dell Dimension 4600 with Windows XP (Service Pack 2 not downloaded yet).
I have uninstalled Norton Antivirus 2002 + updates and have installed Virus Scan 2004 ver. 8.0(boxed version cd).
I was not able to register this product. Or at least, I don't think I registered this product.
The product is running and I have asked for updates. It responds that it is current---no updates available; yet the Security Center screen indicates that there are updates available.
The Security Index is 3.2
the Antivirus Index is 4.6.
It indicates an old version of antivirus software was detected.
I do not have a personal firewall at this point.

I bought an Inspiron One 2020 loaded with Windows 8. I upgraded it to Windows 10. I've replaced the system board and now appear to also need a new hard drive. If I replace the hard drive and need a fresh copy of Windows 10, will I be able to get it activated? I can't find the original Windows product key anywhere. Is this something that Dell may have somewhere associated with my Service Tag or Express Service Code? Is there any other way to find the original Windows Product Key?More replies
I have purchased 2 laptops in January 2016 from Dell's Authorized reseller Compuindia Banglore. Both the laptops delivered in good packing and were working fine. I have sent my request online as suggested for change of ownership at Dell site and got it done and received confirmation from Global Tag team in April 2016. But I was surprised to see that my warrant got expired in March 2016 with in two months of purchase. When I explored the details it was showing the date of shipment to Compuindia Banglore and found that Dell has changed the ownership but have not updated warranty renewal for new customer.
Now I am sending request and reminders to Compuindia and Dell support team for the needful. They are saying that my request is under process. But even after 3 months they are not able to rectify the same.
My laptop got damaged accidentally, I wanted to get it repaired but waiting for reply on warranty issue.
Hi, I have bought Acer E1 570 and registered the product here in the acer website. Is that enough for the warranty requirement? Any other steps to do?

I bought an MP3 player a few weeks back and registered online.
For the first time today I received a pop up saying "Gentle Reminder. Register your Creative products now to enjoy a host of benefits."
I've tried closing it with the corning cross and killing it in task manager, this doesn't work.
I've tried hitting OK and going through the registration process (it already recognises the details I'd already registered with). Once I complete registration it takes me back to the pop up.
I've tried looking at the EXE file in task manger and deleting it and it won't let me, even with user account control turned off. I don't want to uninstall the whole product as it took me long enough to get the product to work through Vista in the first place.
What can I do to get rid of it and what further info do you need from me please.
There is a run entry in the registry that is causing this. Post a HijackThis log and we will tell you how to stop it from running.
Download hijackthis here:
Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop.
Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This.
Continue to click Next in the setup dialogue boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialogue.
Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again.
Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there.
At the final dialogue box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and then ask you to save the log.
Click Save to save the log file and then the log will open in notepad.
Click Edit > Select All> Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
Paste the log in your next reply.

What information is being sent during registration? Is there a computer serial number that is sent?
This being when you register a software product over the internet?
This is Microsoft's policy on personal data collection over the Internet:
If your question is not answered there, or if you meant "activation" instead of registration, or if you are looking for another company's policy, then post back.
Ok, Heres the deal. My computer was doing odd things with the Windows installer and I came to the conclusion that a component of the installer was missing. I decided to repair Windows XP used a new Windows XP instal disk that I had bought for my laptop. Now, my desktop already had a version of Windows XP on it, but when i was asked to reregister my computer during the repair process the product key for it would not work so I used the one that came with the new CD. Problem is, I cannot seem to use the CD's product key for my laptop anymore. I now have used 2 copies of Windows XP on this computer and need to find a way that I can instal Windows XP on my laptop (preferably without having to buy a new copy of Windows XP). Any help would be much appreciated.
Call M$ and explain your situation, they can help you. I have a friend who transfered the resgistration of his copy of xp from his old machine to his new one with their help.3 more replies

.... So I built my own computer begining with an ASUS motherboard and installed Windows XP Pro 64 which I bought off ebay... Sure, there were problems. Most things worked but I had a bunch of blue screens without any noticeable pattern or cause. It turns out that my Veloci Raptor hard drive was bad and sectors were being randomly destroyed through normal usage. I got the drive replaced and re-installed Windows XP Pro 64 again. Things were working good until I ran the ASUS System CD which updated a slew of drivers. Upon reboot, Windows tells me that my machine has encoutered substantial hardware modifications since registering and must be re-registered. I have 3 days to do so. I re-register immediately chosing the online method and get a response to the effect of "Our records show that the number of installations allowed uder this product key has been exceeded. Please contact customer service regarding how to acquire additional licenses." I bought Windows 2000 and Office Suite six years ago. I now have installed it on my new computer. The Customer Registration window came up and I typed in my original Product Key (25 characters) but this was rejected as invalid. I've checked it carefully and there are no mistakes. I think maybe the following has occurred but I need some help.
1. There is another number called 'CD key' on a yellow seal which is not 'product key' and I cannot find it.
2. The Windows 2000 licence is for only one computer (My booklet states "For Distribution with a New PC Only" although I bought it independently through a dealer.
3. This edition of Word 2000 is out of date and I have to buy a complete new one.
As far as I can guess CD key = product key/certificate ot authenticity and there is no other number so why is it rejected as invalid. My other theory is that Windows 7 64 bit does not support this software.
Can anyone who's been involved in this kind of scenario advise or throw light on the matter? I'd like to use my Word 2000 because it is a familar working environment and I have lots of files I need for my work at school.

Mac OS 10.6.8, Firefox 5.0 w/ noscript 2.1.2rc0
I was trying to register my Wacom tablet and when I got to the webpage where I enter my email address & name & address I got a clickjacking alert from noscript - specifically when I clicked the email box. When I clicked on the image in the alert box that is supposed to show you the hidden image it looked like it was showing me the top border of the page as the hidden image. Since I was just seeing another part of the web page already visible I figured this was most likely a false alert. I called Wacom anyway and asked.
I don't know enough about web page setup to know what could cause a false alert and I'm not sure what I would see if the alert was showing me a clickjack element. Would I see a Send button or a Donate button? From what I read on the noscript page it sounds like clickjacking would require going to an evil webpage and wouldn't happen due to a security breach at a legitimate site. Is that correct?
Now dont quote me on this, but I believe that click jacking is where a page has an invisible overlay like link across either the whole page or multiple ones across various points on the page. Most of the time, yes it is used for malware distribution, IE you click any area on the site then it opens a new page to a bad website, but it is also sometimes used for advertising, IE you click on a video and it opens a new site or an ad site. But that was most likely a false alert from no script. I'm guessing that wacom said nothing was wrong?2 more replies
I have an XPS 8700 desktop all stock bought a little over a year ago. Last night I turned it off when I went to bed. Today I turned it on and it will not go past the first dell loading screen. It freezes and I'm unable to press any buttons (F2, F12 etc) I put it a different hard drive to see if that was the problem but it still continued. HELP PLEASE??

Please disconnect all the connectors and then hold down the power button for 15 secs, now remove the memory modules and put them back one by one and observe for any changes.
If possible please try another set of memory modules. If there is a separate graphics card, remove that as well and try the onboard.

Hey, im having some issues. I have a DELL inspiron 5100 laptop and i just recently removed a virus that almost destroyed my hard drive, I got it to work fine but after a few days of use it started to freeze up on the DELL loading screen on the start up, i accidently pressed the F12 key and it took me to a screen with different ways to start up XP, like through the Hard drive or a disk.
i selected to run offthe hard drive and it froze up any help?
hi, after you hit F12 did you see the diagnostics program at all? Ordinarily I would say It may be worthwhile running a scan on the hard drive if you can. But, I see you removed a virus, can you tell me if it was with the help of the antimalware section on this forum? or did you just remove it yourself? I need to know if you are absolutely sure you removed all traces of the virus - if you had the help of a forum they would have given you the "all clear". Have you tried starting in safe mode at all?19 more replies
Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

Click Control Panel.
Using the drop-down menu next to View by: in the upper-right corner, select Large Icons.
Click Programs and Features.
Click Dell Webcam Central.

When I powered up my new dell xps 15 9550 this morning, (bought less than 1 week ago) I had a message from Dell in the bottom right hand corner of the screen saying there was a firmware update notification. I clicked on this and proceeded to update the firmware.
since this, I have been suffering from the screen going blank and the only way to get it back on again is to switch off the laptop completely!
I have restored the bios to factory settings (F2) and have also tried disabling the nvdia video card but still have the same problem of the intermittent screen going black.
At the same time, if I am listening to music, the music also switches off, so it doesn't appear to be just a video card problem.
It all appears to point to this firmware update?!
any help would be much appreciated.
I have the same problem:
I initially reported that my XPS 15 locks-up displaying an all white display, however, I have since noticed it locking-up with a black display or gray display. Two drives on system 265GB Samsung on motherboard and 1TB drive internal bay.

I bought a new Dell i3847 and it has Windows 7 Pro 64bit factory installed on it.
I wanted to do a full system backup, but the Dell Backup and Recovery software will not allow me to do a system backup. Further, I have been unable to create a system recovery disk using Dell Backup and Recovery.
I can't use the Dell provided system disk for recovery because it is clearly marked Windows 8.1
1) Why is a Win 8.1 disk included with a Win 7 Pro 64bit system?
2) What is wrong with Dell Backup and Recovery that it:
a) can't create a factory recovery disk
b) won't allow me to create a system back up so I can return it to the factory state
It's been 2.5 hours and it is still "initializing disk" to create a factory recovery. It usually fails somewhere during initialization or writing. Spending hours for each failed attempt to create a factory recovery disk is NOT GOOD!
It has now been 4 hours and Dell Backup and Recovery is sitting on "Initializing Disk" under create Factory Recovery Media
I can't have it take hours and hours, then fail and then try again.... then take hours and hours.... then fail ... then hours ... then fail...
i have just purchased a DELL Inspiron 15 5000 SERIES - 5559 with Windows 10 Pro pre-installed in Spanish. I have also purchased a DELL 24" additional screen SE2416H.
Whilst watching live internet broadcasts (TV, Youtube etc.) on Chrome, Edge or Firefox, as soon as I connect the screen to the laptop by HDMI cable, the sound on my laptop speakers disappears. Upon disconnection of the HDMI screen cable, the sound re-appears.
However, the sound doesn't disappear when using other sound applications such as Skype.
This means I can't enjoy watching internet TV with sound on the 24" screen.
Please advise how to fix this as the main point of purchasing the 24" screen was precisely to be able to watch (and listen to) TV programs.
I have read multiple postings about folks spend hours on the phone with Dell about Blue Screens of Death and Inspiron 530. I too bought a Dell Inspiron 530 - the First machine, after installing my lexmark printer 3400 driver not only gave me blue screens but memory issues with the windows desktop not painting correctly and icons missing! So I called Dell and they told me how reset the machine back to the factory settings...but I still encountered the Blue screen of Death even after that and then going to standby/hibernation and coming back - clicking to yahoo and checking mai! Boom Blue Screen every time! I called Dell and they replaced the machine with another Dell Inspiron desktop 1 week ago. I hooked up the new one and the same exact thing has happened - I restored the settings again and have already had the dreaded blue screen Stop error code 0x40000080 even with out now installing anything related to a printer!!! all while coming back from hibernation! So what I have read here is to get around this issue is to never let the machine got to standby or Hibernation is that correct?? or do I need driver updates! why in the world I would need new drivers when this is a brand new machine!!! any help out there on how to fix the problem?
at the moment i am running a diagnostics test and seems like most devices are passing the test.
It could be any number of things but my first 2 guesses are possibly the hard drive or motherboard.you might want to take it somewhere so that you will get a correct diagnosis.

Hi GuysI recently purchased a second hand XPS 13 and everything has been running fine until this morning. I ran ADWCleaner for general maintenance, the machine rebooted and loaded back into Windows without issue. Shortly after, the laptop started beeping over and over again. I tried rebooting only to find that the laptop won't load Windows and doesn't load past the Dell splash screen. There is no beeping during bootup. Also, I am load to setup or boot selection screens after pressing F2 or F12. The laptop appears to register if I have selected one of those two options but will not load after the Dell screen progress bar has reached 100%I have stumbled across a couple of posts on the internet suggesting that the issue maybe motherboard related ?Does anybody have suggestions on what I can do to resolve this issue ?Thanks in advance.
What is the exact system model? Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter?
Download the service manual - http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download the manual and disconnect the adapter and battery and press and hold the power button for 30 seconds and try powering on the system with adapter only / battery only and check.
Based on your system model, check if you are able to remove and reseat the memory modules if possible.
Disconnect the HDD and check if the system goes past the Dell logo.
Try the onboard diagnostics - press and hold the fn key + power button to turn on the system and it should initiate the diagnostics. Check for any possible beeps codes.
If nothing works, then I would suspect a faulty motherboard.
If the system is under warranty, Please click my DELL-username and write me a private conversation with the service tag and your contact details(Name, Phone#, Address and Email). If there is no warranty, then you could contact our team to get a quote for a paid service call - http://dell.to/1vnT6CQ

We're encountering scrolling issues with Excel 2013 (and 2016).
What we mean by that is graphic distortions (blocks of black) appearing on the worksheet during the scroll action.
It happens almost exclusively on the externally attached monitor.
Even after the scrolling action is finished the blocks of blacks will persist and will obscure the data in the cells. Generally only opening the worksheet anew will correct the issue (until scrolling is once again initiated)
This is on a new Dell XPS 15 (9550) running Windows 10.The monitor is a Dell U2717D connected via the HDMI.
We've done quite a bit of troubleshooting but before describing in detail we wanted to know if anybody had seen something similar?
Since I reinstalled Window8 in my inspiron 3138, the laptop cannot install 'dell upgrade package' and cannot setup my wifi driver.
I cannot install following drivers and the laptop cannot detect wifi at all.
Dell Wirelss 1704 Wifi driver (Network_driver_342TP_WN32_7.35.333.0_A01)
Dell Airplane mod switch driver (Network_driver_PX8MM_WN64_1.0.0_A00)
Do you know how to solve this problem?
Hi there. I bought a Dell Inspiron 17R-5720 back in September 2012, and have been having this issue pretty much since I bought it from Amazon. The computer is running Windows 7 64 Bit, 6 GB RAM, Intel Core i5-3210M @ 2.50 GHz. I have Microsoft Security Essentials installed and run scans regularly.
Pretty much what happens is that the screen will turn to colored static, and the computer will be unresponsive. In order to make the machine usable again the power button must be held down and the computer restarted. The odd thing about it is that it almost always happens when I am in the process of moving the laptop from one place to another. For example moving the computer from my lap to the table next to me. It has happened once or twice when I just touched the computer while it was on the table next to me. A few times the screen just turned black.
Since it is still under warranty, I called Dell support and they sent out a technician, who didn't seem to do any sort of troubleshooting. He replaced the motherboard and the LCD display. This of course did not fix the problem, so I called Dell again. This time, they had me send the computer to them. They received and sent it out the very same day, again, it doesn't seem that they did any real troubleshooting. When the same malfunction cropped up again, I of course called Dell and they said that when they received the laptop there was some sort of cable inside that was "loose", so the connected this cable and sen... The technician Dell sent came to my house today. He replaced the motherboard (again), the LCD screen (again), and the hard drive. Fast forward five hours later, and guess what? The problem still hasn't been fixed. I just got off the phone with Dell support, of course their first suggestion was to send the computer in again and have them "fix" it. It took about an hour of going back and forth being on hold/arguing before they finally said they would "elevate" my case and and have someone call me on Monday to discuss it. I think I've given them plenty of chances to solve this, now I just want a replacement computer. Though with their track record, I'm not holding my breath. I'm even doubting that I'll get a phone call.
Does anyone think that this is power supply related? Not the power cord itself (I've used two different cords), but whatever is inside that powers the system. Sorry, I'm not that computer savvy.
I found this list on the Dell site that tells you whether they have tested a particular model for its ability to be upgraded to Windows 10. The Dell Vostro 3550 is not on the list of about 20 Vostro models, some with lower model numbers , some higher. Will they ever test it??
If you try to upgrade, windows 10 copies files and then in the 2nd of the three major sections of the upgrade (where you have that big circle in the middle of the screen) it just goes to a blank screen and then all disk activity ceases and it becomes well hung. Of course now, the machine thinks its os is win 10 and you cannot go back to a win 7 recover point . So you just lose all your data and apps and restore the factory image and then install 208 windows 7 updates and it takes like 8 hours in all.
Sounds like a similar problem that people had with Vostros going from win 7 to win 8. Why not fix it.
Well, after spending the better part of whole day trying to figure out why somebody else's Dell Vostro 3550 was not displaying anything after an even longer period of downloading the Windows 10 upgrade (from Windows 7 in this case) it turns out the fix required was to upgrade the BIOS to A11 (end of 2012).
Hopefully this might save someone a wasted day in their lives. Before this I spent some hours before figuring out that the machine was in fact booting - only the display was black. So then it was a matter of figuring out key strokes to use (blind) to shut down and also enable the menu for safe mode. Safe mode worked, and so then more hours trying to work around the issue before finally stumbling onto some stuff online where the BIOS upgrade was mentioned - apparently also an issue with Windows 8?
Hi recently my Dell 2330 wont boot up properly. I press the power button and the light comes on the button and i hear the fan. The screen is a brighter black then after a few seconds the screen seems to go off but still power and fan running. Ive spoken to Dell and done all what they asked. Then today out the blue it came on as normal. I went to run a diagnostics test from a link Dell sent me and it asked me to restart the computer. I did and then it did what it did before and has not come back on since. They have said it could be the motherboard. Any other suggestions ? ThanksMore replies
i have lots of problems since its old and over used, but recently it used to close itself then when i close it and reopen after a while it give me message that it was over heated but opens fine after i skip it, i think its not a heat problem cause sometimes it close after a while.anyway today when i was using it i noticed the light getting darker than normal in seconds then suddenly screen turned black i tried to close it and reopen i see dell start screen and low beep then screen turn black but its still working and i can hear it open normally just screen black.i tried to take off battery, AC chord and pressing power button for a while but didnt work same thing happens though the screen sometimes give red light.i tried to work with AC chord or battery only still not working.i tried to connect my laptop to another screen but it doesnt connect i dont know if it needs options first or no but with black screen i cant see everything to download program if i need.well i dont know whats wrong all happens dell start screen low current beep then open normally but with black screen.a note if it helps, my screen side cover broken did that cause problem or it doesnt matter?EDIT:i tried to open it again its fine but screen black i can barely see shadow of everything, i think something happened from cover damage or is it something else?message edited by mamera
Best first step would be to beg or borrow a monitor and plug it in as an external. That would tell you if you have a monitor fault or not.Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks3 more replies
My laptop (Dell Inspiron 1564 - Windows 7 Home Premium) slowed down a few days ago and I decided to restore the system to Dell Factory Image. The process started but stopped more than halfway and gave the following message, "Failed to apply Image". I restarted the system but it would now not boot up, not even in safe mode! Perhaps, during the restore process few essential Windows files have been erased.
I want to restore the Dell Factory Image and cannot re-install Windows since I have lost the product key of my original Windows 7 installation DVD provided by Dell at the time of laptop purchase. Your help / advice is solicited and would be much appreciated.
P.S. System's Recovery Partition is intact and has factory.wim and other related directories / files intact.
The product key sticker on a Dell laptop is usually in the battery compartment.
Have you tried to run the Dell restore again? It won't boot because the restore started but failed so the "C" drive is corrupted.
If that does not work, suggest posting on the Dell forum where you can get help from those more familiar with Dell's.
How do I configure a Dell 5640 sound bar with surround speakers on a new XPS 2720 with Windows 10 (64)?
I just received my XPS 15 9550 and it is exactly as I was expected.
However, it seems that I do not have the basic software suites, especially the Dell Premier Color software that I really wanted to try.
Is there something I forgot to do during the laptop configuration?
If you ordered the software for your computer it can be downloaded from MyDellDownloads. The link is listed below. You will need to sign into the site with computer information.

Okay, from the first day I bought a Dell e1505 laptop a little over a year ago, when I search google maps for an address, these weird 1-2" black boxes obscure part of the maps. Video drivers didn't fix the issue, so I waited. Back in March, I began contacting Dell tech support again.
Five months, over 50 documented hours on the phone, one product return, a dozen repair CD's, a new hard drive, and too many hd reformats/windows installs later, the problem continues and Dell finally gave up on me, telling me that they only sell and service hardware, I must have a software issues, and software support is only a courtesy.
Ironically, I also have a problem with the Dell website http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/dellconnect/dellconnect?c=us&l=en&s=gen where the world map appears all screwed up.
Before I take them to small claims court, has anyone ever heard of such a problem?
Is there a way to fix this issue I re installed it dell quick set, and the icon stays till I shut down the computer or restart it then its no more I want this to stay I did the msconfig already, and its not on there and how would I work around this to keep it staying on permanently?
Where are you placing this icon?
How are you creating the icon?

When I attempt to start my laptop it goes to the Dell logo screen and will not boot Windows 8. Any suggestions?
I've had the computer less than a month and if I have to restore the system completely it will not cause much of a problem.
Thanks for the help in advance!
Re-installing windows is the last resort. So before doing that, you can try the steps mentioned below which might fix the issue. 1. Restart the laptop and start tapping the F2 key at the Dell logo for enter the BIOS. 2. Navigate to the “Advanced” menu. 3. Change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from Intel Smart Response to AHCI. 4. Press F10 to save changes and exit. 5. Reboot the system. 6. Go back into the BIOS by tapping the F2 key and change the SATA operation/selection in BIOS from AHCI to Intel Smart Response. 7. Save changes and exit by pressing the F10 key. 8. Reboot the system and it should boot normally into Windows. In case the above steps don’t fix the issue, run the Pre-Boot System Assessment (PSA / ePSA) Diagnostics. Run the test and check if gives any error code. Note down the error code and update me with the same, would let you know the next course of action. Please write back with results.
I have recently upgraded to windows 10 and everything seems file except one problem I am facing which is the wifi card connectivity issues. My connection to router drops very frequently, curently the generic driver which windows think is appropriate is installed. I wanted to undate that with Dell's driver which I can't find on driver download section. 64 bit WiFi driver is NOT there. 32 Bit driver is but that won't install on my machine.
Can someone from Dell help? either to give me the link for correct driver download or confirm driver is not available in which case I would need to downgrade to windwos 8 as the system is unusable in its current state.
On the Drivers & Download pages for the Inspiron 15R 7520 there are only 64-bit options for Windows, whether 8.0,8.1, or 10. So those drivers are the ones for the 64-bit version of Windows 10, as long as you filter the operating system option to Windows 10 64-bit.
The file name may state "Win32" but if you click on the "View Details" link, and then check "Supported Operating Systems" near the bottom of the page you'll find that the driver supports both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.
You don't mention which wireless card you have in that system so I can't link directly to the specific driver. Which card do you have and what error are you getting when trying to install the drvier?
I would also recommend updating the firmware on your router. Many routers need an update to be able to handle Windows 10 specific drivers and cards reliably. What router brand and model are you connecting to? And do you have problems with all routers or just this one.
Lastly, here is a link to the Dell Networking & Wireless Support Center. You will find a few support articles in there that may be of help to you.
Let me know which card you have and when the last time you updated your router and, if you can't get the connection to work, I'll see what else I can suggest to help you.
