A:Bios update and win8 error

If the PC is running Windows XP then I would advise to NOT update to Windows 8.

Chances are you will not be able to find any drivers for the system and it will cause issues.

Do not update the BIOS as choosing the wrong BIOS or updating incorrectly will cause the PC to become a big paper weight.

My friend's Win8 upgrade ( no, really! It was MY FRIEND'S machine, I swear!) halted on an error with an Intel driver issue. The solution was simple, he just needed to update his drivers from the mobo website BEFORE trying to upgrade to Win8. Untold hours of misery trying to track down the error rather than the few minutes of updating his drivers.

Things like this are why a clean install is generally recommended.

My Samsung series 3 laptop has been sending out popup messages telling me I need a bios update, I go to the Samsung software update site and this bios update has been failing, I have made several calls and chats to techs at Samsung who tell me to do what I have already done, they tell to ask for tier 2 tech, who can go in my computer and fix it , When I finally got a tier 2 tech, they told me the same thing, I told him what I had been told about him and what he could do, He said, is it working , I said yes, but settings on computer change on their own, like wifi turns itself on and that concerns me. Anyway, He said that it didn't need a bios update, even the Samsung website said this computer needed a bios update. I posted this on hardware, firmware concerns, and they told me to post here, I was going to go to a site ,that had a download that checked drivers, I was told to stay away from this.

a friend gave me his HP DV6500 Notebook to fix it. He said it made an update and then for hours nothing happened. He shut it and started again.

I could see that it tried to recover 2 times. The second time it was successful but it somehow resetted or returned the Vista to a fresh install!!! His data was locked in a previous User account, I backed it up on a usb-stick with a linux live cd.

I can't make a reinstall because now a bluescreen always appears even when I boot from Vista DVD.

ntoskrnl.exe corrupt when try to boot vista in the normal way.
How can I fix that without being able to use the repair option of the DVD?
Sorry, the title of the thread is wrong. I figured out already that the BIOS version is for an Intel. So everything is ok with the BIOS actually.

Hi Guys,

I have a REAL newbie question. I?ve tried reading a bunch of tutorials, but they?re a little over my head. I think my question is pretty basic, but after a couple hours research, hopefully someone here would be kind enough to help.

I have an M2A-VM motherboard and my system keeps freezing up, no input from keyboard or mouse, no ctl-alt-del, nothing. It freezes intermittently, but never goes more than 3 hours without freezing, sometimes freezes in a few seconds, with 5 ? 10 minutes being the average time it works before freezing. Seems to freeze more (often immediately) when I?m using the mouse than any other time, but it will freeze on it?s own, just idling, if you give it enough time.

I?ve read a few things including updating bios and downloading the latest motherboard drivers. My problem starts when I go to download the mobo drivers from this page:

ASUSTeK Computer Inc.-Support-

It lists 41 driver updates there for my motherboard:

41 files found

Qualified Vendor List (1)

BIOS (20) [BIOS History]

BIOS-Utilities (1)

Chipset (1)

LAN (1)

Utilities (2)

Manual (14)

And apparently I?m ?missing? these Windows Updates:

Q936960 - Important
Q950130 - Critical
Q951550 - Important
Q951944 - Important

Question #1: Do I download all 41?? Surely my machine can?t need 41 updates? How do I know which ones to download and install?

A:Windows Update INCLUDES Motherboard Drivers and BIOS Update on M2A-VM?

I have the same board on another pc.

You only need to download and install only that which would make your setup current.

You really only need to update the bios if you will be moving up to a newer processor that is not currently supported by the current bios or if the newer bios fixes a known problem.

You need the latest motherboard chipset driver. (I would install this first if you haven't already)

You need the latest LAN driver.

The audio driver you can either download from Asus or from RealTek.

I have, or had a laptop purchased 9 months ago, therefore under warranty. Yesterday the ThinkVantage System Update recommended a BIOS update. After the traditional recommendations about what should not shut down the computer, the laptop is reset and started with the update.

During execution, displayed on a screen command, a message "ERROR XXXX. Press any key to continue." After press the key the laptop was freezedy was completely blocked. After an hour without seeing response and no sign of life, I decided to turn it off to confirm the disaster. The laptop was dead.

The laptop began to beep and would not start. Before the panic generated by the situation, I searched the forums where I found several cases that refer to the same problem and the insinuation that makes LENOVO about the customer's responsibility to avoid recognizing the warranty.

I was not looking for a BIOS update, it was recommended by ThinkVantage System Update, the software executed it and damage the equipment.

Besides being a damage caused by the ThinkVantage System Update, the situation gets worse when the answer given by support insinuates that the customer turn off the computer, so it is a CID (Customer Induced Damage) and therefore the guarantee does not cover it. I do not understand how LENOVO may imply that the responsibility of the customer. Really disastrous.

In conclusion, if you are not needing to make a BIOS update, it is preferable to omit the BIOS update messages given to ThinkVantage System... Read more

This 64GB internal card was working fine on win8.0 Acer v5, laptop.

Tried four different SD cards, win8.1 could not see any.
I have checked with SFC and DISM no problems.
Hardware Diagnostic tool does not find the SD.
Updated drivers from Acer. No help.
Have Auto Play set to use for everything.
Tried 8GB and 32GB SD cards, nothing.
If I plug the SD cards into a USB adapter they all work fine.

This sucks big time as the SD is my daily back up drive.

Any help?

A:SD Card Gone after win8.0 update to win8.1

OK, problem solved. Win8.1 kept seeing the SD card slot and installing the "Standard SD card slot drivers.

Acer's Support for this model V5 showed the card reader as an Alcom or something close to that and I was pretty sure that was wrong. I reinstalled an older backup image of win8 and Device manager showed the SD card reader as Broadcom SD SCSI drivers.

I reinstated the win8.1 in place of the win8 backup and then I went back to the Acer V5 models then looked through until I found a card reader that had Broadcom drivers. Downloaded that and installed and all is well with the world again.

Who was at fault? Beats me, but the card reader is obviously telling win8.1 that it is just a vanilla slot. Acer got it wrong for not listing a Broadcom card reader driver with this model. On many of their models they list two or three different drivers, but for mine there was only one and it was the wrong one for what was actually in the laptop.

The original win8.0 worked fine as the Broadcom drives were installed at the Acer factory.

I bought this HP Probook 455 G3 and it has just run out of warranty which I intend to renew very soon. I don't like 8.1 or 10 so I spent more than I wanted to and I bought a new Windows 7 lappy that is a business laptop. I always do the recommended updates that I receive by E mail but one I never do which is the Bios update. The last time I did a Bios update on this lappy it wouldn't fire up afterwards. Rang tech help and after going through some troubleshooting it went back for repair. It came back working and luckliy i didn't have many pictures on it.Started from scratch and haven't had a problem since. I am now scared to do the Bios update. And.... Beofre I bought this laptop I bought a Windows 8.1 from HP direct . Hardly use it but update virus protection as necassary and last week there was a Bios update to perform. I also took out another 2 years warranty on it. Same think happened. Last week in fact. Wouldn't fire up afterwards. Again Tech help tried to help but in the end after frequent crashes it went in for repair on Friday. Good job I took out the extra warranty... I am now down to 1 laptop which I do not want to fail on me. I don't seem to have much luck with the Bios updates... Advice please? Is the Bios absolutely essential?

Hello to the BleepingComputer community,First of all I'm sorry I haven't finished some of the steps from the Preparation Guide. It's because these steps require a reboot (e.g. Step 6: Disable your CD Emulation Software - DeFogger will ask me to reboot the machine), and I have a bad feeling about the question if it is safe to reboot in my situation: I'm not sure if I have a type of malware which is ready to infect the BIOS - if it is so, then it could infect it much easier during the reboot process.- If there is a good way to find out what is the problem (and fix the BIOS threat part if it really is present) without rebooting / shutting down this PC, or at least without booting from this hard drive (which I feel is probably infected), then please tell me what should I do.- If you know a place / forum where I can get a specialized help for this (seemingly BIOS-malware related) situation, please tell me where I could go.- If there is no way to move forward, I'll go ahead and risk the reboot, and follow the other steps (steps 6 to 10) in the Preparation Guide, no problem.I kindly ask you to please read below the details of the problem as it occured to me, and the things I have tried so far.The PC is AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core BE-2350 2.1GHz, Motherboard Biostar TA690G AM2 (with AWARD BIOS), 4GB RAM, 200GB SATA HDD, and an ASUS EAH4870 card added a few years ago. It's with WinXP SP3, AVG Free 2012, (standard) Windows Firewall, and it's behind a router.I ... Hello, I have updated my HP Elite 8200 CMT from windows 7 to windows 10. In the HP driver download page, there is no BIOS update for windows 10. But I have noticed that there is BIOS update for Windows 7.  The question is, may I use it on Windows 10 ?  And in general, are BIOS updates OS dependant ?

Hi: You can pull the DOS based flash file folder out of the BIOS package, copy just the contents of the DOS flash folder to a USB flash drive formatted with the FAT file system. Plug the flash drive in a usb port, restart the PC, tap the ESC key to get the menu of options. Select the F10 System setup option to gain access to the BIOS. Select the File menu>Flash system ROM command.  Select the USB flash drive. The PC will see the files on the flash drive.  Follow the on screen prompts to update the BIOS. That way it makes no difference what operating system you are running. One very important note...I have read the installing the latest BIOS 2.29 causes issues with W10. There is a forum post regarding that... am running v2.28 on my HP 8200 Elite CMT, and have no issues at all on W10. I read that post and decided not to update the BIOS to v2.29.

Hey guys. I just bought a new PC for school and the HP Support Assistant program recommends an update to the BIOS. Now I know the update is available but I also know that you typically should only update if their is a problem as updating BIOS is risky if not done properly. Now since is a recommended update, I have already attempted the update and it has failed twice. I do not want to keep taking chances of messing up a brand new machine just for an update that may not even been necessary to begin with. What I would like to know, is what exactly does this update add/fix on this machine? I have already searched the Internet but have been unsuccessful in finding a description for this paticular update. If someone could please take a look at the attached screenshot and let me know what this update is for, I would be most appreciative. At least then I could make an informed decision on wether or not I'm going to attempt this update again. Thank you.

Hello everybody!

I received a laptop awhile back that came pre-installed with Windows 8 which I did not enjoy, so I decided to downgrade to Windows 7. Which has been going fine and everything is good, but 2~3 weeks ago I had some questions involving my computers performance that I also requested advice about via this forum and was told that my process is pretty bottom shelf and that Win8 was better for this. Plus, the newest update just released so I am curious as to how they improved on it and if I will like it now. I have been reading and am just a little nervous because I don't want to ruin my only computer that I need for school. Being that Win8 has the UEFI funky new BIOS thing, I recall having to change certain items involving booting when I went back to Win7. So, I am wondering if the BIOS is still the same as when I had Win8 (other than those values that I could change back) or did it completely refigure it? I am not extremely well versed with these sorts of things and have just begun really 'tinkering' a few months ago. So, do I need to update the BIOS for Win8 or is it fine? I am currently backing everything up right now and just want to take the proper steps to ensure a smooth installation. Lastly, I read that the product key for Win8 was now stored on the BIOS and there were programs to retrieve it, but I'm assuming that is when you are running Win8. Is that key lost and do I need to purchase another one? Or would it still be on the BIOS? Any advice is greatly ap... Read more

A:Win8 to Win7 back to Win8 (HELP! w BIOS, product key on BIOS etc.)

Hi Jeremy-

What I would do is shrink C in Disk Mgmt to install Win8 in a Dual Boot to try the new update to see if its anything compelling. This is how I tried Win8 repeatedly until I finally deleted it for the last time realizing it doesn't hold a candle to Win7.

The steps are here for Dual Boot Installation - Windows 8 and Windows 7 or Vista - Windows 8 Forums.

If you changed to Legacy Mode to install Win7, then you can install Win8 in Legacy Mode too. You don't need to use Secure Boot or UEFI which is crapware that adds no extra value but plenty of complications.

I have an Optiplex 9010 AIO. This morning I was trying to update the BIOS of my system, from A10 to A13. During the update process it showed an error: "ME FW Update Failed: Internal error: FWU_Buffer " - please see the photo below. Although the update failed on the Management Engine part, it still boots up and running OK. I tried couple of times to update the BIOS, and each time I got the same error. I tried to flash the A12 and A11 BIOS as well, A12 gives same error, and A11 has the same Management Engine version hence no use.

I'm using win8. When I'm trying to update my Qualcomm Atheros AR9287 driver, it just tells me that the newest driver is already installed, which is not true. I downloaded and unpacked the driver, but even if I navigate there, win8 will not recognize that driver and just tell me that the newest is installed, effectivly blocking any driver update.

I tried to delete the old drivers manually from system32, but he still won't recognize the new one. If I deinstall the drivers via manager, the whole adapter disappears; when checking for changed hardware, he will reappear and instantly reinstall the old driver, even if it has been deleted from system32 (no idea where he gets the old file from). I'm not at all a pro, and also new here. Any constructive feedback to the problem is welcome. If this post is wrong here, could someone push it where it belongs or tell me to move it please?

Thanks for your time.

I had Win8, then updated to Win8.1 via the store, because of a forced update.  I wasn't happy as it messed up the computer.  Well with my computer new, it was in warranty so the tech helped me.  It took quite a while to get the issues ironed out.  It ran great for a good long while.  Then I changed my Microsoft password, and even though online it showed fine, it never took it on the computer.  I did not know that, and restarted it a day or so later.  So I then was locked out of my administrator account because of it, and had to use my guest account.  So I finally got up the nerve to start from scratch.  The 8.1 had been backed up, and the flash drive files did not work.  I had to go all the way back to Win8.  I was going to be fine there, but now I hear they are going to stop giving updates after the first week or so of Jan 2016.  I am livid.
Now I have 3 updates that won't go.  Can I still update to 8.1 like that with an iso?  Or am I going to have to correct that, before trying the 8.1 update?  After that it will be bugging me about going to Win10.  I don't want to go to the Win10 because of privacy issues.  I guess I will have to eventually.  I would rather go back to Win7 and be done with it.  But you can't even buy it anymore.  At least it ran with no major issues.  I don't want to do this major step until after the holidays are over...I need my computer,... "Then I changed my Microsoft password, and even though online it showed fine, it never took it on the computer. "
--- Please verify the this issue while you are on Windows 8.
"I had to go all the way back to Win8."
--- Make sure it's running well so you can move on to 8.1 (I'm recommending you move on to 8.1)
--- Create a system image backup using a 3rd party program onto an external drive: myself I use Macrium Reflect Free.
--- Create MR's bootable rescue media onto disc: I used a DVD-RW
Once you move onto 8.1, and you have it running well, create a "pristine" system image backup using your 3rd party program.
--- This way if you run into further issues you will be able to restore it without having to return to 8.
--- On the weekend before Patch Tuesday, I have a monthly maintenance plan and then I create system image backups: in my case I only keep only two system backups at a time
Now I have 3 updates that won't go.  Can I still update to 8.1 like that with an iso?  Or am I going to have to correct that, before trying the 8.1 update?

Hi, I am on a limited speed line and win8.1 has started to download the update. I now find that is it is some 3G in size and that will take days.

How can I stop the download?

I have tried the suggestions here...
How can I stop the download of Windows 8.1? - Microsoft Community
but of course that has done nothing.

Effectively I cannot do any online work until I can stop the download hogging the limited bandwidth.

Arrrghh MS strikes again.

A:How to stop win8.1 download and update?

Hello CarvedDuck,

You could disconnect your internet connection until you get an error that the download could not complete to stop it. Afterwards, you could reconnect the internet to continue on without the update downloading until you start it over.

Hope this helps,

After I updated to Windows 8.1 the computer does not seem to be able to start up correct.
Just before the logon screen should appear, the screen goes Black, goes to blue again and to on.

I can start up in safe mode and have in the logfiles nailed the problem to be the logonUI.exe which chrashes.

I cannot roll back to before the win8.1 install as this seems not possible in safe mode, nor in advanced start up mode using F8.

Have not been able to find a fix - anyone that can help ??

Hi All,

I have a USB-1TB drive for backup. It is encrypted with Truecrypt and until this latest update all worked well.

Now win8.1 will not show it anywhere. Because of the encryption making it unreadable to windows, it used to pop up the "Format at this drive" which I clicked "Cancel" then activated it with Truecrypt.

In their great collective wisdom, msoft seems to have deemed that any drive that is not immediately readable should be cut loose. Makes no sense but there it is.

I am currently using my recent win8.1 cloned backup drive before the latest update and I can see the USB drive again. I tired swapping the latest 8.1 back in and same again so it is definitely as a result of the updates. {sigh} Progress !!

I am guessing it will be a Registry setting but have no idea where to look.

Anyone have any idea how I can get the latest win8.1 update to allow me to see that drive again?

I have a client with a refurbished L850 which is currently running Windows 8.0. I ran the upgrade advisor and it found some issues with 8.1 and was wondering if anyone had upgraded and what their experience was like? I also contacted and they seemed to say was Ok but you might have some issues and we won't guarantee it will work as it does on 8.0.

So, it seems like the best thing to would be to leaver her on 8.0 and not bother with 8.1.

Any suggestions?

A:Satellite L850 - Update from Win8 to 8.1

I don't know which L850 has your client but fact is that this model is supported for Win8.1 upgrade. If you visit Toshiba download page on you will see all listed stuff that should be installed.

More about Win8.1 update you can find on

In my opinion you should create recovery media with original Win8. After doing this install Win8.1 update following instructions on Toshiba Win8.1 page. Check the functionality and if everything is OK I hope your client will be very happy.

If there is some problem install original Win8 version from recovery media and notebook can be used with ?factory settings? again.

By the way: check Win8.1 section on this forum to see if there is some issue with L850 model.

Hi Again,

I've been running windows 8.1 for about two months now. All is fine. I found that going into the services.msc and turning off all the unused garbage speeds things up.

One of the things I turned off was the Windows update service in order to prevent Microsoft from trying to shove win10 down my throat. I had set it to MANUAL rather than DISABLED.

So for weeks everything has been fine. Then last night I go to turn off my computer and it says "Update and Shutdown" .. HUH????

Hi folks, I am starting to suspect the presence of malware on my machine, due to some odd behavior of Windows Update, as well as issues with the Action Center.  If I look at my Update History, it will give a blank list and perpetually state "You have not tried to install any updates".  However, if I instead look at my "Installed Updates" list, it will show many older items.
When I start the Windows Update Troubleshooter, it will return a message stating it found and repaired a problem with update ("Potential Windows Update Database error detected 0x80070490"), but the behavior of Windows Update doesn't change (and the troubleshooter will re-find the same problem each time re-run).
Norton 360, Norton's Bootable Recovery Tool, Windows Defender Offline, Malwarebytes, and ESET's online scanner all give a clean bill of health.  Any suggestions on how to proceed, short of a format and re-install?

Recently I got update to my Windows 8.1 after which suddenly the audio services stopped working. I googled for solutions and found one as follows:

1. Search for "services.msc" in start menu and open it.
2. Go to "Windows Audio" service and open its properties by right clicking on it.
3. Go to the "Log On" tab.
4. Select "This Account" option and in that field type "NT AUTHORITY\LocalService".
5. Restart the "Windows Audio" service.

After performing these steps the speakers started to work but at very low volume.

My system is hp-envy m6-1216tx which comes with beats audio speakers. I can't understand what the problem is. Maybe it has something to do with Beats Audio or with AVG antivirus (because I saw AVG being mentioned in many similar posts).

this shit microsoft system is forcing me to use an email to modify my computer/user name..
since i updated win8. i just entered a stupid email, but even better, microsoft morons
engaged a verification of that email so i can't even add any email..

& the thing is, i dont want to add any email..

i want to add any string for the user.. when i wanna reset it..

if i reset it manually under windows & restart, it still forces me to use an email & crash & wont let me log into windows
either, i had to do a backup using a virtual mini xp environment in the ram at the startup.

what id like is to revert that update, make the computer user system like the old one,
without forcing ppl to use emails or have them validated by microsoft or not.

A:Win8 update & user login restructured..

Ranting doesn't usually get you much help here. If you have a problem, ask a question and you'll get the help you need.

You do not have to use a MS E-mail account, you can create a local account. Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 are the same.

Local Account - Switch to in Windows 8

You can also setup a local account during install:

Clean Install - Windows 8

See 18. If you want to Sign in to Windows 8 or 8.1 with a Local Account

Agree it should be a lot more evident how to do this during install rather than be hidden but at least it can be done.

Tonight I noticed 500MB+ of critical updates (Windows Update), and I have "recommended updates" disabled. The big one was an nVidia driver. But I already have the latest hotfix nvidia driver installed. Since when does Microsoft deliver nVidia drivers as a "critical" update on Win 7/8?

A:Win8.1 lists NV driver as critical update???

I have win8.1 and just checked for updates and didn't get any Nvidia critical driver update. If you install the full Nvidia package it does have network access so maybe that is why. All I install is the actual driver and nothing else. I'm still using 350.12 because I have no need of newer drivers and these are rock solid.

When you run the 8.1 upgrade, the 'Upgrade Assistant' will check compatibility such as drivers, etc. so it would probably be good to update as much W7 stuff as possible.

I've tried to install the Win 8.1 Update via the Windows Store and got the 0xc1900101 - 0x30018 several times after the PC restarted at the ending of the update.

I know that several users solved this with disabling drivers, so I did some suggestions I've found.

1. Disabling AV (Kaspersky)

2. Disabling LAN Controllers

3. Uninstalling DAEMON Tools, TuneUp

--> DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth

--> sfc /scannow

--> wsreset.exe

5. Trying to repair Windows Update itself via "WindowsUpdateDiagnostic.diagcab"

6. Disabling AIDA

7. Disabling all components from my ASUS motherboard

some other things I can't remember...

For your information, I don't want to install Windows 8.1 from scratch, as I have too many programs and I never had problems with installing an OS for this system (Win7, Win8).

I have upgraded to Windows 8 but I have found that the Wifi adapter needs to be reset frequently (there seems to be no cause) - the Windows 8 trouble shooter resolves it by resetting the adapter but I thought that there would be fix for this?

When I looked to update the drivers I have found that the L300 is not listed (in either the un-upgradeable or the upgradable lists) - is the L300 compatible in this regard with another model? Or can you suggest how to update all the Toshiba drivers for this model.

A:Satellite Pro L300 upgraded to Win8 but would like to update drivers

Your Satellite Pro is pretty old notebook model and not supported for Win8.
It is problematic to find drivers for non supported and old notebook models.

Problem is that if you make decision to do this anyway you are on your own and can be just lucky if everything works properly.
> is the L300 compatible in this regard with another model?
It is not easy to give you proper answer. What must be done is to compare every important hardware component like chipset, GPU, sound chip, LAN/WLAN with other models and see if some Win8 drivers are available. It is not so easy.

For instance: Toshiba offers 4 different hardware platforms for Satellite pro L300. Which one do you have? What is the model number of your machine?

I'm having this problem right after installing win8 update.
previously i just roll back update, but it still update automatically.
so here are the file needed:

A:BSOD after update win8 (power state failure)

Only 116 Windows Updates installed. Most systems have 160 or more. Please visit Windows Update and get ALL available updates (it may take several trips to get them all).

Daemon Tools (and Alcohol % software) are known to cause BSOD's on some Windows systems (mostly due to the sptd.sys driver, although I have seen dtsoftbus01.sys blamed on several occasions).

Please un-install the program, then use the following free tool to ensure that the troublesome sptd.sys driver is removed from your system (pick the 32 or 64 bit system depending on your system's configuration): [S] DuplexSecure - FAQ [/S] Link broken as of 21 Jul 2012

If removing Daemon Tools doesn't stop this, then the next most likely thing is the Globetrotter USB data stick. You MUST update it to a Windows 8.1 compatible version - or remove it from your system.

Please update these older drivers. Links are included to assist in looking up the source of the drivers. If unable to find an update, please remove (un-install) the program responsible for that driver. DO NOT manually delete/rename the driver as it may make the system unbootable! :

Am I insane?

Windows 8 Standard (not Pro or Ent)

I had Win8 early, maybe even beta or CTP via MSDN subscription. Anyway, I've been running it since then and have had great luck with it. On day 1 I put bitlocker on my USB drive (yes, it worked) and put EFS on key folders that held security related items. I fully realize that those features were not included in the marketing slide for the Win8 launch, but I always trust marketers as far as I can throw them.

Now fast forward to 2015, all my encrypted folders are now decrypted and my bitlocker drive is still bit-locked, but since I know the PIN I still have access to it.

Support thinks I'm certifiably insane, but I'm certain I enabled EFS and Bitlocker on Windows 8 Standard, while it was likely in beta or CTP. Did Windows update really just yank encryption out.

So my bitlocker drive is proof (not like court of law). I formatted it on day one. I did bitlocker stuff through the manage-bde script so I can never remember if the bitlocker control panel was ever really there (cuz its not now).

So... anyone have some non-win-updated Windows 8 machines to see if EFS and manage-bde work on? I'm less inclined to roll back the last 47 updates.

Hopefully not insane.

Good morning. This is a good one and will probably require the time and patience of Brink. Installed Win8 CP build 8250 last week and have noticed that Windows Defender will not update. Reason being that the Windows Update Agent has seemed to crashed. It updated the first batch of apprx. 27 Updates but when I currently check for new Updates, it freezes for apprx. 90 secs. and says that there are no more important updates. Imagine that! I'm not connected to Microsoft's PC Servers and error 8024401C is highlighted. I understand that this is a known issue with Win8 CP and largely due to Proxy servers. Needless to say, I have NO Proxy! I can already see that this will be an irreconcilable problem. I've seen this once before in Win7 Enterprise and I scratched the OS alltogether as a bailout. Not to worry - This OS is timebombed for Jan 16 2013 and I won't sweat the details. Microsoft will say that because it's a Beta is why the issue presents itself. I guess that it's no surprise that I don't give Microsoft the time of day nor any proceeds. Let's climb the ladder. Where's Brink ? I'm gonna need a senior Admin for this one. Goodday.

This is nothing unusual since I read in different forums about strange issue after Windows 8.1 upgrade.

I recommend you to do following:
Set the notebook back to factory settings. Recover the notebook back to Windows 8
Update the Windows 8 to the latest state (all updates, patches should be installed)

I've got a question for the Pro's ...

This is regarding my ASUS Tablet with Windows 8.1 Professional x86 installed (Windows is activated of course).

The Tablet currently has Windows 10 reserved and after looking at this post, i took a curious look at the KB used to reserve it and noticed that KB2952664 was applied .

Can anyone let me know as to why Windows Update applied KB2952664 to reserve Windows 10 when that is a Windows 10 Reservation for the Windows 7 x86 systems ???

I am pretty well versed in Computer Hardware and Software (though i am no Master in those fields) and this is kind of a confusing update applied.

I am all ears LOL !

After the most recent update from Windows Store for Windows 8.1 Pro, my Intel Wireless drivers got busted. I could only connect to the Internet via the Ethernet cable and no matter how hard I try re-installing/uninstalling the drivers for the wireless drivers, I still get the same outcome.
In Device Manger, I checked the listing for Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection.
In the Properties menu, I get this message:

This device cannot find enough free resources that it can use. (Code 12)
If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system.

I went to install software from Intel's website for diagnosing the wireless driver/connection status, so I ran Intel PROSet/WIreless Tools, and after clicking Diagnose > Run Tests for Hardware Test, I get this message:

Wireless Hardware is not bound to transport driver.

My wi-fi switch on the left side of my laptop is already turned on. I switched it off, uninstalled and deleted the driver and restarted the laptop to see if I could reinstall. Upon turning back the switch on after logging into my Windows account, I still get the same outcome: code 12.
I have also searched on Google and the Microsoft forums for similar topics, all point towards uninstalling/deleting the drivers and re-installing. I did those, and none of them worked.
I would appreciate if someone can post a working solution.

My son's Toshilba Satellite L50-B-1DV hasn't successfully run a Windows Update since last October - I only discovered this yesterday.

When I had a closer look the updates, and just about every kind of troubleshooting I try, is failing with the error message "0x80070057". I've rooted around online but can't see any obvious fixes.

We'd prefer to fix this ourselves but as the machine is only six months our next step is to take it back to John Lewis for repair - which would be a pity as he uses his laptop every day.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

A:Satellite L50-B-1DV Win8.1 - Windows Update Error Message 0x80070057

You have mentioned the error 0x80070057 while update installation.
This error occurs due to multiple reasons and therefore it?s not easy to say why this happens exactly. But the most common cause could be the missconfigured registry or damaged system reserved partition.

My recommendation for workaround:

Ever since this new update with 8.1 I can't install any new apps.. I first noticed when my Mail app stopped working and froze my computer. So I uninstalled the app and when I tried to install it back I get the screenshot below.. So I tried Yahoo Mail, some games, some other apps.. Nothing will work. Mail finally said it installed, but it's not on my computer and the app store says it's already installed. It's just really f'd up and I'm running out of ideas to try.. After updating from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 the amber wireless indicator lamp is always on, even if wireless function is off.

Is there a solution to make it work as before the updating?

In my experience the special disk is needed which is available only for ASP technician.
Therefore it?s necessary to contact the ASP in your country in order to reflash the BIOS.

In my opinion you shouldn?t not try any ?Crisis Recovery disks? which you fond in the net? this can lead to mobo damage?

Hello everyone! I ama new user and i am coming up with this post as I couldn`t find any kind of solution for my problem.Recently I decided to do a reinstallation of my operating system, which also previously was Windows 7 Ultimate (x64). The installation went as usual, and after finishing it I went on to install all the latest drivers from the Lenovo site, for my product. When getting close to installing almost all the drivers i`ve needed, i stumbled upon a new version of the BIOS amnd the drivers and sfotware recommended for my laptop, by the producer. So i proceeded to install the upgrade, restarted the computer when it prompted me to do so, but after the so-called restart the laptop did not boot up as usual. At first it was telling me to not do anything as the BIOS is being flashed and then it was telling me something about some sort of image processing, things that i did not understand at the time (i have never encountered anything like that). After that my screen turned black. I have not done anything for a few couple of minutes as i thought it was supposed to be like that, but then i just force shut it down and unplugged the AC adapter. When trying to boot it all up again, the only thing i got was a black screen and nothing else. After doing a little bit of research it appears that, somehowm i`ve managed to corrupt the bios on my laptop or something, and nothing else would work at this point. I tried to remove the BIOS battery and the ram and then put them all back, trye... Read more

Hello all, this is my first time posting here so please forgive any mistakes/oversights. I've just updated my Samsung laptop's system BIOS via their software update program, and my Nvidia GPU (GT 650m DDR3) no longer seems to work. The Nvidia control panel is still there, and it still gives me the option to select which programs use the GPU, but there is no GPU actitivity showing up. Also,I've tried playing Skyrim (which auto-detects the PC's graphics cards) , and the game no longer seems to detect the Nvidia GPU (just the Intel integrated graphics).

My laptop model is NP550PC7, with 6 gig of ram, and an i7 quad core CPU, and the OS is Window 7 Home Premium 64bit.

I've tried looking in the BIOS but I can't seem to find anything related to the GPU or display options. Any help or avice is much appreciated.

A:Problems with Nvidia gpu post BIOS system BIOS update.

Have you updated your GPU with the latest drivers?

Please navigate to:

Start> Control panel> Swith to icon view> device manager.
Look under "Display Adapters"

Is the Nvidia GPU listed there? If so are there any yellow symbols etc?

I have a old Tecra 9100 with years of good service, and this is my first problem, but is a great one, after a forced reboot the screen shows a BIOS block 1 damaged message. I have tried to repair the BIOS upgrading to the last version I have found, the 1.6 one, but its a Windows version (to upgrade from a running Toshiba computer I think) and when I try to run it in another computer to generate a FDD and upgrade BIOS, I cant, beacuse a Toshiba common modules message.

Its there any BIOS diskette image-archive I can dowload to perform the BIOS upgrade in the BIOS?

Thanks in advance.

All you can find is stuff on Toshiba support page. I don't know where you live but try to contact nearest Toshiba authorized service provider.
They have access to Toshiba database and they can obtain all this for you. Make a call and ask for help. I am pretty sure they will help you to solve this BIOS issue.

Dear all, Since the beginning I got troubles with charging - ( 94 % plugged in, not charging). The easiest solution was just remove the battery, but not for HP Omen. I removed battery and destroyed the rubber on the bottom. I had to open the laptop, because one morning I got the massegae that my laptop is overheated and fan does not work properly. Both fans works only during the lounch, when windows works only one fan was in operations, second one never starts again. Looking for the solution in the internet I have found that this can be because of BIOS is not updated.  I pushed F2, checked the the system, everything is fine and then I installed only one version which I have found there. No massages regarding overheating any more, both Fans are working full power and very very loud. Temperature of processors is 30C. In my room 25C.  I followed all instructions, but got massege BIOS update is blocked.I downloaded the most previous version, again BIOS update is blocked.Current version of bios is BIOS version F00 04Sep14.  Can it be solved somehow?

Well, I was asked to fix a several month old win 8 laptop.

I was told it had been interrupted during an update and said no OS found, after getting permission I tried to refresh and when that froze (4% for an hour) reset. Then I loaded a copy of win 8 onto a usb to try a clean install, still nothing. I use a program to wipe it, then try a fresh install again. useless. I try installing win 7, same issue.

No matter what I do I keep getting varients of this \windows\system32\config\system 0xc00000e9 and a message mentioning registry problems.

Any ideas?
Failing that is there any way to more or less erase the registry and start from scratch?

A:Win8 FUBAR-update ruined-registry issue-reinstall useless

If you do a clean install you registry is replaced (along with everything else)

0xc00000e9 tends to indicate a hard drive failure though which may not be good news.

Hey all,

I have been going crazy trying to find the nitty-gritty details of what goes on under the hood with the upgrade from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 on a Surface Pro 2 I am considering upgrading.

I am aware the many Windows 8.1 devices have OEM Product Keys embedded in the BIOS. I am trying to find information on how Windows 10, if installed from a .ISO bootable media, interacts with this key, and how Digital Entitlement plays into all of this. It's currently hard for me to make sense of a lot of this. Can anyone help clarify how all these elements play with one-another?

Another question regarding this process I have currently: If I use a NEW Windows 10 product key during installation, would the new key replace the previous (8.1 OEM) one in the BIOS?

The more I find out about all this, the more mystery there seems to be to it. I am just trying to find the cleanest way to install Windows 10 on a Surface Pro 2, and this BIOS OEM key and Digital Entitlement vs. Product Key thing is really confusing me. Sorry if this isn't the best place to ask, I'm just pretty lost right now and could really use advice from someone who's really knowledgeable about this stuff, currently.

Thanks all .

After responding, I?d also be interested in hearing about problems you have had using Windows 8/UEFI that appear to be associated with using UEFI (i.e., they most likely would not have occurred, in your opinion, under BIOS). Ultimately, I am wondering if you think Windows 8/UEFI is an idea whose time has come.

Made the huge mistake of updating BIOS. Had small MOBO usb prob, and for some reason thought a BIOS update would do something. Wasn't too worried because Gigabyte touts Dual BIOS pretty strong.

Anyway, tried updating BIOS, then system would not boot, so the Backup BIOS didn't kick in. btw, the MOBO is a Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro.

So I copied the backup bios to a floppy and used the floppy to fix the main bios. OK, now computer would boot, but would freeze up after the desktop icons appear. Actually would sometimes work for a few minutes, but always froze up.

Boots OK to safe mode, even to the point of getting online, so I downloaded the old bios from Gigabyte, put them on floppy and used that to update the main bios. Same result.

Also did a system restore from XP Pro Safe Mode (because XP wrongly states that this can be undone; didn't find out that System Restore done from safe mode cannot be undone until I tried to undo!).

My tech support (ABS Computer; they rule) thinks that the BIOS is now fine, that some windows files are corrupt and a re-install will fix problem and mobo is probably fine as well. I'll buy that.

anyone have any miracle suggestions before i re-install? Is a repair install worth a shot? Really not looking forward to re-installing all my software and putting all my data back where it belongs to get my email hist., bookmarks, etc. back.

thanks - I will now write the following 500 times: LEAVE THE BIOS ALONE! even with Dual BIOS

My motherboard is GA-X38-DS4 Bios F1 First Release.
I notice on the Gigabyte site that are some bios updates.

F1 First Release.
F2 ADD new version super I/O code,Improve CPU compatibility.
F3 Enhance memory performance.
F4e Beta bios. is it a good idea to flash/update bios or not and why?
I read this in gigabyte web site...
Because BIOS flashing is potentially risky, if you do not encounter problems using the current version of BIOS, it is recommended that you not flash the BIOS. To flash the BIOS, do it with caution. Inadequate BIOS flashing may result in system malfunction.

What is a BETA?
BETA describes a new version that is reliable yet may not include all the features of the final product. During this phase we are previewing new features and gathering customer input to insure our product provides the best experience possible.

Update CPU ID/Micro codes in new BIOS means?

Hello all.
Running windows 10 pro 64 bit.
I've updated from Version 1511 to the anniversary update, 1607.
Or at least, I thought I did.
The update went well, no hiccups, no errors. Used windows update, let it downloaded and install and rebooted. Alas, system still shows OS Version 1511.
Used update again, same thing, rebooted, 1511.
Went to the windows site, downloaded the windows10upgrade9252.exe, ran it, same exact issue, rebooted, still showing version 1511.
Error logs show no issues. Disabled all external drives, turned off anti-virus, etc, repeated, rinsed, rebooted, still version 1511.
Only think I've not done is burned an ISO to DVD and updated from that.
Any clues as to what's going on?

Hi, I saw the new BIOS version 1.25 dated ?14?.?09?.?2016 appearing on Lenovos support site. I did not check the version I was having on my system before downloading the "new BIOS", so I started the installer and the tool told me I already have this BIOS version. msinfo32.exe tells me I am having BIOS 1.25 dated 13.07.2016. So apparently the BIOS was released already some time ago and I already flashed it to 1.25. So whats the point of re-releasing the 1.25? If there are any changes of todays version compared to the 1.25 released some time ago, is it worth flashing? If yes, how can I do this if the tool tells me I am already having the latest version and it does not let me override my BIOS? Thanks and best regards,Martin

BIOS updating is not like installing newer drivers, you should only ever update a BIOS to fix a known hardware issue that you are actually experiencing, and for which the motherboard maker has released a fix for that is detailed in the release notes.

BIOS updating is not a recreational activity, it is actually a risky process as there is a reasonably significant chance that it can go wrong, effectively (economically) destroying the motherboard.
