When I choose a web page to be the home one, I always get the msn.com page.
I checked the pc for antivirus and NoAdware and they don't find anything.
What can the cause be and, most important, the solution?
Thanks

A:Home Page "about Blank" Can Install Sypbot Ad-aware Or Ewido

Hello guflink and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. The first thing I see is that there are 2 anti-virus programs running on the system. This can cause many issues for the operating system. Keep the one you want and uninstall the other (either McAfee or AVG).Next, let's run a different scanner and see what it shows us.Download WinPFind3u.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named WinPFind3u on your desktop.Note: You must be logged on to the system with an account that has Administrator privileges to run this program.Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.Open the WinPFind3u folder and double-click on WinPFind3U.exe to start the program.Under Additional Scans click the checkboxes in front of the following items to select them:Reg - Desktop Components
Reg - Policy Settings
Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.Let it run unhindered until it finishes. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.Use the Add Reply button and Copy/Paste the information back here. I will review it when it comes in. If, after posting, the last line is not < End of Report > then the log is too big to fit into a single post and you will need to split it into multiple posts.Cheers.OT

I use Ad-aware SE personal build 1.05 - currently with Definitions file SE1 R46 17.05.2005.
Until recently it has worked well, but for some reason it keeps freezing - first on 754 objects scanned, then 718, lastly on 699. This happens when scanning the Program files directory. When I hit Ctrl. Alt. Del. to check activity all looks normal - when I look a second time it shows Ad-aware "not responding". When running normally it used to get up to 3500 plus objects scanned if memory serves me well.
Has anyone experience of this problem? I tend to run this several times a day to keep the aged PC/software platform running as fast as possible - I also use Ccleaner & Spy-bot search & destroy.

A:Ad-aware SE freezes

Uninstall the programme, then reboot your system, and reinstall.

If that doesn`t help, post back.

Hello, I am having trouble. When I run an AdAware scan the computer freezes and turns blue with an error message C000021A. Right before adaware turns blue there is 1 critical error that shows up. I think there is something fishy on my computer because it just doesn't seem to run right. I've tried other spyware programs and my anti virus and they find nothing. Also, i tried to run ad aware in safe mode and the same thing happened. My Win 7 start up has changed. Now the BIOS/Boot option  info page which normally stays for 1 second so unable to read it now stays on and I must press F1 to proceed. Then it displays the Choose OS page which has nothing but Win7 on it. How this change happened is a mystery.

I have no password to get to the desktop straight away which I want.  How to stop the BIOS page displaying until I press F1 and to bypass the Choose OS instruction?

Any help please.

Hi, I have an HP Pavilion desktop (one month old) running Windows 7. Normal keyboard and mouse (not a touch screeen model).

When I try to install Windows 8 everything works fine until the screen that asks you to choose a color for your desktop. I can't choose a color or press the Next button since my wireless desktop and wired mouse stop working (was fine before this). I have to do a hard reset at which time the system rolls back to Windows 7. What should I do?

Thanks,

Should I change the Internet connection to "PUBLIC" (from the Network and Sharing Center) for added security or can I leave it as "HOME"? Adsl is treated as a LAN and my concern is that if set to HOME the PC is shared in the network?? Thanks

It wont get shared in the network, unless you tell it to. all it does is classif the connection as safe

Well, it doesn't really freeze but it is annoyingly slow and takes around 2 minutes to load when timed with a stopwatch. By comparison, it takes my computer about 39 seconds to boot into XP. My computer is somewhat modern with an Intel P4 550 processor and 2gb of pc3200 DDR1 ram. Ad-aware used to zoom right past the splash screen, but now it is slowed to a crawl. I've tried almost everything I can think of

What I've tried so far:
-running ad-aware scan itself
-spybot scan
-hijackthis scan
-deleting definition files and redownloading
-reinstalling application entirely
-forced uninstall yanking all adaware registry entries out with regedit, deleting all application data it leaves behind in documents and settings folders

None of this worked, so here I am. I really don't want to format over something this stupid, but I find it to be an annoyance. Thanks all for your time.

After using Spybot and Ad-Aware to clean up my files, I discovered that my internet explorer doesn't work on my home computer. It looks as if the program is trying to connect with www.incredifind.com, but never does. I have already tried: 1. Changing my home page; 2. Re-booting my computer and 3. Restoring the changes made by Spybot and Ad-Aware.

Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

Whenever I run Ad-Aware it seems to just stop half way through. I have no idea at all why, but I am also suffering badly from mmy computer not being able to open any of my games and a missing RunDLL32 file from System32.

Any ideas why its doing this? any details needed feel free to ask.

A:Ad-Aware freezes up! shouldnt it stop this?

I had a problem with Ad-Aware 2007 on my older laptop, an IBM running XP on a PIII. Seems the new versions of Ad-Aware need more RAM than SE Personal, which was more than that laptop had. I rolled back to SE (with manual defn updates to June 2008) and that solved the problem. Been using AAW 2008 on a Core 2 Duo XP machine for a few months with no real issues.

Go to Start > Run and type
sfc /scannow
Be sure there is a space between the letter C and the forward slash.

You will need your XP disc available in order to complete the this check. Reboot when finished - you should see a blue screen briefly with the message "Please Wait."
This procedure might be able to restore your RUNDLL32 file.

Ad-Aware just picked up a level 10 TAI trojan and deleted it, and now windows freezes when left running for more than 30 minutes or so, sometimes longer, it's kind of random.
This is the ad-aware remove log:

Win32.TrojanDownloader.Agent

I've looked around and none of the fixes associated with that trojan have done anything at all so as a last hope here's HJT log hoping to god that this can be fixed somehow...

Hello,
I've almost the same problem,
after my computer did the automatic updates yesterday evening and rebooted (after 2 weeks running) my ie frooze on loading.
He tries to load my homepage, but freezes when downloading.
When I wait some time, it works again.
I allready had this problem before and then I couldn't find what it was so the only solution was to format.

I hope I don't have to do that again?

Yesterday I also did an ad-aware scan.
Is that maybe the cause???

Guest cant be required to enable sharing with any router. If you disable guest you may have a few problems if guest is the owner of the files you want to share

I have a problem with Ad-Aware 2008 Free that I first encountered with Ad-Aware 2007 Free. The problem is that the scan stops (or freezes). With Ad-Aware 2007, the scan stopped when it reached the "Scanning most recently used objects" section (path and object fields were blank). With Ad-Aware 2008, the scan doesn't even get that far. It freezes during the "Scanning files" section at object "...staller\(AC76BA86-0000-7EC8-7489-000000000703)\...(the remainder is not visible). The scan time display keeps running, but to exit the scan I have to close the program.

This problem occurs on an eMachines tower with Windows XP/Home SP3. The computer has a 900 MHz Celeron processor and 256 MB RAM. This computer has been defragmented, and no problems were found when using SCANDISK.

It does NOT occur on my laptop, which is a Dell Inspiron 6000 with Windows XP/Pro SP3. The laptop has a 1.5 GHz Pentium M processor with 2 GB RAM.

The problem occurrence is correlated, I believe, to the installation of Windows SP3.

As part of my troubleshooting, I disabled the anti-virus program (AVG Free v. 8.0.100), the Firewall (Zone Alarm Free v. 7.0.337.000), and the real time scan of Spybot Search and Destroy (v. 1.5.2). With all those items disabled on the desktop, the problem still occurred. Note: the laptop has the same security software, except that Spybot was version 1.4.

I know that the scan freezes (it doesn't slow down), because I let it (v. 2007) run overnig... Read more

Hi,Right, I've been given a PC to fix and it's giving a massive headache. It's a slow pc anyway, so repairing has been painfull to say the least. It's running XP Home, and it looks as if there's a spyware issue. When I first got the PC it couldnt even access the internet with it as IE would crash almost instantly. Some spyware removal software was on there but not one I'd heard of. I tried running Firefox but had no joy connecting to the net. Eventually got Spybot on there and couldnt do an update. Got around that in safe mode and was able to remove some spyware, although spybot said there was some stuff it couldnt remove...i cant remember exactly what, as it took until 1am to finish the scan! The pc also had Norton 2005 on it, which I removed as it wasnt working anyway. Ive removed a few bits from the startup in the registry just to try and speed things up, but didnt see anything that looked dodgy. After the scan IE and firefox both work, and Spybot can get its updates, so things appear to be ok. However, when I try to install Ad-Aware or AVG free or Nod32 trial, etc it tells me:"The system administrator has set policies to prevent this installation".I'm guessing that the remaining spyware is causing this issue, but not sure how to remove it. I've re-installed the Windows Installer but that hasn't helped. If anyone could help I'd be most gratefull. Recently, I changed DSL providers from Earthlink to another company. I did this for two reasons: the Earthlink throughput was awful, and their tech support was virtually useless. After numerous attempts to get the speed problems resolved I finally gave up. Upon ordering the new provider's service, I uninstalled Earthlink from my PC. Problem is, no matter what I do, my IE home page is the Earthlink start page. I have used the IE options to change it, it goes right back to Earthlink. I have changed it in the registry, it goes right back to Earthlink. I have checked for spyware/adware, run registry cleaner, you name it. Is my PC going to be forever haunted by Earthlink? I have XP home edition, latest version. Can someone rid me of this troublesome home page?

I've uninstalled anything that has Yahoo connected to it also Spigot...no joy. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Don

Sorry to start a new thread, but most of the stuff I've read here is older and doesn't seem to apply.Click to expand...

Do you mean you have another topic covering the same problem?

If so, you should post that you are receiving help here and mark the topic solved otherwise you might end up with conflicting advice.

Now

Please download Farbar Recovery Scan Tool and save it to your desktop.

Note: You need to run the version compatible with your system. If you are not sure which version applies to your system download both of them and try to run them. Only one of them will run on your system, that will be the right version.
Right click to run as administrator. When the tool opens click Yes to disclaimer.
Press Scan button.
It will produce a log called (FRST.txt) in the same directory the tool is run from.
Please copy and paste log back here.
The first time the tool is run, it makes also another log (Addition.txt). Please also paste that into your reply.

Home page redirected to dosearch.com and since that started happening I'm getting a bunch of pop-ups and ads telling me my browser needs to be updated for security reasons. I removed dosearch.com from my list of home pages in internet options but it still comes up when first going online. I have found info about it online but they are mostly web pages that offer a bunch of costly removal tools which makes me wonder if they are in on it.

I click on a new tab and it comes up as a blank page rather than your first home page.

It works fine during the current session, however after a shutdown and restart, new tab opens as a blank page again.

any help greatly appreciated.

the problem started after I uninstalled and then reinstalled avg free antivirus (trying to see if that was messing up fios media manage).

I have windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

Hi noroots

Welcome to TSG!

Click here to download CWShredder. UnZip the file, close all browser windows and click on the cwshredder.exe then click "Fix" (Not "Scan only") and let it do it's thing.

When it is finished Restart your computer.

IMPORTANT!: To help prevent this from happening again, I strongly recommend you install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits.

The simplest way to make sure you have all the security patches is to go to Windows update and install all "Critical Updates and Service Packs"

Go here and download Adaware 6 Build 181

Install the program and launch it.

First in the main window look in the bottom right corner and click on Check for updates now and download the latest referencefiles.

Make sure the following settings are made and on -------ON=GREEN

From main window :Click Start then Activate in-depth scan (recommended)

Click Use custom scanning options then click Customize and have these options selected: Under Drives and Folders put a check by Scan within archives and below that under Memory and Registry put a check by all the options there.

Now click on the Tweak button in that same window. Under Scanning engine select Unload recognized processes during scanning and under Cleaning Engine select Let windows remove files in use at next reboot

Click proceed to save your settings.

Now to scan just click the Next button.

When the scan is finished mark everything for removal a... Read more

Hi:
This problem is either Networking/connection or XP issue, but I want to find out what's the problem is.

The issue is that whenever start-up PC/XP, 'not connected,' page appears instead Home-Page. After a couple of second, it shows 'now connected' in the rectangular-box at the right bottom of corner of task-bar and I need to click to open 'Home-Page' manually although I set 'I.E.' on start-up to open Home-Page automatically.

It appears to me that my ISP is slow connection, but of course I can not be sure.

How to open up Home-Page, instead seeing 'not connected' page?

Thanks for your help in advance.

A:'Not connected' Page instead "Home Page'

You Network Adapter loads last on your computer and it takes up to a minute to connect to the internet. So, everything else is going to load first before you can access a web page. So, if you have IE set to open with Windows, it is going to show a not connected message until you get an internet connection. Better to not have IE load at startup and just be patient. You can also, just leave your computer on and the internet connection always on.

A:HJT Log -- Home page changed to Home Search

Your log shows that you are seriously behind on windows updates. It is essential that you update your windows before we continue to help you as the infections could reoccur. Go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and if it asks to install software, let it. Then click on the Scan link and let it do its thing. When its done you will see on your left a section called critical updates. Click on that section and install everything that you can. When it prompts you to reboot, do so. Then repeat this process again until there are no more critical updates listed. Install Service Pack 4 and all critical updates. After the installation of the last update make sure you REBOOT the computer, run HijackThis again and post a new log please.Download this: Getservices.zipExtract the file to the c:\ drive. Then navigate to the c:\getservices folder and double-click on the getservices.bat file. A notepad will open up. Please paste the contents of that notepad as a reply to this post. The trojan mutates on every reboot. From the moment you post your list, until you see a detailed fix written up, DO NOT reboot your system or log off. If you do, the service will have changed and the fix provided will not work.

Hello: I just received some windows updates as well as upgrading to Internet Explorer 7.
Note: I had to remove IE 7 the other day as I was having issues opening certain webpages.

Anyway, IE 7 seems to be navigating fine, other than the fact that when I click on my desktop icon to launch Internet Explorer it opens to a webpage that allows you to Customize Your Settings.

Although, I have www.google.com as my home page within Internet Options (General tab), Google does not open, but rather http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157 opens then quickly converts to http://runonce.msn.com/runonce2.aspx which then opens the Customize Your Settings webpage.

I noticed that the default setting in Internet Options is displayed as http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157 , so I tried to change that to www.google.com, but it reverts back to http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157 .

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Ted569

A:Home page automatically opens to "Customize Your Settings" page

That is new with IE7.0. You should only have to run through the customization once though. Then click "Go To My Homepage." That should be all. Have you done that yet?

Is there a way to make Internet Explorer's "New Window" button open my home page instead of the page that I was just on?

I like to open a new window and search something real quick on google (with it big, not using the searchbar in the top right as its tiny up there).

When you open Internet Explorer in a whole other instance, it uses memory that it would otherwise not use had you just opened a "new window".

So, is there any sort of registry tweak, etc. that could make "New Window" open my homepage instead of the page I was JUST on? That's not a New Window... That's the same Window...

I am using a Dell Dimension 8300 using Microsoft XP Media Center. My main browser is IE 8 and my secondary browser is Google Chrome. This morning my browser page froze after a few mouse strokes and the hour-glass icon appears. If I click again the following comes up at the top of the page "Not Responding" and stays that way until I go to the Windows Task Manager and shut down that program. I have tried Google Chrome and the problem doesnt seem to appear. I have the feeling that a phantom program has attached itself to my browser and is causing this problem. I have used Norton Security Suite and NPE to no avail. I have also tried CCCleaner and Wise Care 365, also without improvement. Any support is greatly appreciated.

A:Page freezes using IE 8

We do not suggest using Wise Care or any other Registry cleaners/optimizers like Norton as they cause more problems then they solve.
Open IE 8, go to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Reset Internet Explorer settings/Reset.

For a few months now, I have been unable to use IE because as soon as I launch the program, if it loads at all, it freezes on the home page. I have tried changing home pages in my Internet Options; no luck. As soon as I try to navigate to a new page, IE crashes. I have not sent any reports to MS, but I did save a txt file of the error just now.

Specs: Windows XP, SP2, IE6 (cannot download 7 since IE freezes on first page)

Per identical concerns I've seen in this forum, I have now downloaded Active Virus Shield and run that. It found some Trojans in old Outlook folders, which I removed. Restarted; IE still freezes.

I searched the forum more and see that this is a common problem that generally requires a HijackThis log to review (since there seem to be different causes, and the problems have been cited over several versions of Windows and IE). I have downloaded HijackThis, and here is the log if someone could give a shot at helping me fix things:

I am sorry if this question has been asked but I am unable to find an answer so far. So what I am very curious about is what exactly is the difference between Ad-Aware SE Personal and Ad-Aware 2007 Free? And why does bleepingcomputer.com link you to the Ad-Aware SE Personal while going directly to Lavasoft you are directed to download Ad-Aware 2007 Free and can't even download the SE Personal version unless it is Enterprise. But then the link from bleepingcomputer does take you to a place ON the Lavasoft website that does offer the SE Personal version. Very confusing! Any answers or links to a previously answered thread would be most helpful and much appreciated!

I have been using this <www.wmi.org/bassfish/reports/index.html> for years with zero problems. Now when I open the page, which opens perfectly, everything freezes, hour glass pops up, and I must go into task manager to end the problem. This is blowing my mind, everything else on the computer works perfectly, I have just cleaned the hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP Pro, with IE 8 and SP 3. I've never seen this before and have no idea what the problem can be, and yes, I've had the server checked on the websites end.

Thank for any help I may receive with this problem,

My desktop has been slow for years. The last few days it's been freezing on nearly every page and taking longer to load pages. I scanned with avg, malwarebytes and using tune-up utilities, and a lot of errors were fixed, and malware removed, but it's still barely functioning.

Hello skysmama and welcome to TSG.

Please give us the "exact make and model of your system". Are you stuck on the login screen? Do you have any errors on bootup? Do you have a backup of your important data? You should have a recover partition on the laptop, and this will bring the system back to factory defaults, But! you will loss all your saved data in doing this. The more information you give us, the better we can help.

I use Google as my home page and lately I been having intermittent problems with it. When I open my internet explorer, it says "Internet Explorer cannot display page". It's not my internet connect because if I type in an address other than my home page in the URL bar it will open. My AOL works too. After hitting the home button a few times, my home page, Google will open. But after awhile surfing the net, when I hit the home button, I get that message again that it can't display page. Right now as I type this, I hit the home page button and it says cannot display page so I hit the back arrow and I come back to this page and I can continue typing and I can send this thread. What's wrong with my home page "Google"?

When I opened IE this morning, my homepage had been changed (no one but me uses my computer) to http:\\thecoolpics.net. It is nothing I would go to. So I went to Internet Options so I could change it back, and it had the new web address there and it was grayed out. I could not change it. I ran virus scan, I also reset the Internet options to the "default" settings, no avail. I have MSN Messenger and Yahoo Messenger running and that website address appeared in my email address line on MSN and as an instant message text on Yahoo. How do I get rid of this?
Thank you for your time...

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Strangest thing...we thought that our internet was down and we tried all of the usual steps...restarting computer, modem, router, etc. and nothing helped. Our other computer worked so I tried switching ports and same thing--this computer seemingly was down while the other was fine. On a whim I selected a random web page instead of the homepage and it opened up. Every single website we tried works just fine but not the home page. We changed the home page, no luck. So what happens is I click on the little Mozilla (or IE) icon on my desktop, the page opens but is blank and it shows connecting, connecting, connecting forever...it stays completely blank but if I put in another website, it pops right up. It even works if I manually type in whatever we have set as our homepage. We checked both the Control Panel and Internet>Tools>Options and everything appears kosher. Please help!

How on earth can I get Sympatico off my homepage...when I go to change the homepage in Tools, Internet options, the Homepage section is grey....I'm no longer with sympatico, too slow for me, so I got cable hook up.....How do I get to change it?

Jan007

A:Home page

When you installed Sympatico's software it branded your browser and probably locked the feature that allows you to change your homepage. You could try to repair/reinstall IE. However, the branding is probably done by modifying the Registry. A repair/reinstall of IE may overwrite those Registry items. However, there's no gurantee of that.

Stand by for some advice from other members here before attempting anything drastic.
