Hi, I was running an antivirus, and I noticed that some of the file descriptions on my laptop had what I think are Chinese symbols in them. should I be worried about this or is it normal?
one of the files was   C:\Windows\Installer\16cd65.msp->#152TTo152U/(chinese symbol)InstallExecuteSequence   there were more but I didn't manage to catch what they were, I took a photo of the screen that I can post if it helps but the symbol is probably to small to read.
It was over a week ago when this happened and I can remember if I was running 9labs removal tool or eset. I can't find a log for eset (I don't think it picked up anything) but here is the results for 9lab:

I import a text file into Excel and have a macro to change it from a fixed width file to CSV. The file now has as block character at the end now, which I believe is the ETX end of text character. I need to write a macro to delete this so the CSV file is readable by another program.

Does anyone know what Excel translates this character as?

I've had the asian language pack installed on my laptop for awhile now and I know of a similar issue that involves the Korean won symbol, fortunately that never happened to me and I use my computer to type Korean frequently. I was attempting to get a program to run in Japanese to help out one of my friends, and after a restart; anywhere there's a file path it shows the ¥ instead of \.

I know there's no difference aside from appearance, but it's really annoying to look at it.

I've uninstalled the program and looked around the Regional and Language options, policy settings, and about anywhere I can think of, maybe I missed it somewhere, but I can't find a way to revert it. Can anyone help? Thanks.

Recently a symbol or "mini icon" has started to appearing over lower-left quadrant of file thumbs. It is a blue ~square with 2 horizontal white chevrons, ">>". They cover about 1/4 of each xLg photo icon/ thumbnail. I'd like to get rid of these pesky & unwanted mini-icons. A quick screen print of photo files, as thumbnails, is now useless because so much of each photo is obscured.

Hello forum,

I have been trying to figure out how to change the status of a file that is present on network discovery on another computer.

I am just going through and assessing each file.

I notice the only person I really would like to share with is anyone that uses the external hard drive - much like the other files on the hard drive that do not have a lock on it.

I know that it may be basic - but I just want a work around for the few folders that I managed to see in computer management.

If someone could please give me a basic idea of what menu's to go into - I promise I will not change the behaviour of any folders.

Thank you.

Just basic steps -

As I am on a network/workgroup and do not want the homegroup - what is the best option.

I'm running WindowsXP Professional on a Dell Latitude D600, and I recently swapped out my laptop base unit, due to a failure with the prior unit. I successfully swapped over all the peripherals from my old laptop unit (screen, drives, Wi-Fi, battery, etc.) and the laptop started up normally, with no problems.

While not a problem, I just now noticed that on Windows Explorer, under [file] Name column, I see that for everyone of the files listed, there a very small "green checkmark" or a "yellow exclamation mark" in the lower right-hand corner of the symbol that designates the file type (Word, Excel, PDF, etc.). I've never seen that under Windows Explorer before, working this laptop - or any computer for that matter.

Anybody have an explanation for the mysterious symbols that have shown up, all of a sudden? Thanks.

Trying to drag multiple .sut ( brush files ) into Art-App it belongs. From the File Explorer window. Was able to do this many times in the past.

I noticed something ; when I use the search engine called
" Everything " from its window interface, if I call up the files in that window, then I'm able to drag and drop the files from that window, directly into the Art app. But cant do it from the File explorer window like I was able to do before.

Windows 10 home basic.

One suggestion, I read in the windows 7 forum, there might be some registry change that happened. But I dont know about such things, just wanted to suggest a idea. Anyone can help ?

Here's a weird one, I have a WinXP PC, with a hidden system file in the root of C:\ that is approximately 8 bytes in size. The filename shows up as the following image:
Namely Unicode characters
U+2124, U+2122, U+2620
Double-Stroke Z, Trade Mark symbol, Skull and Crossbones.
I have no idea how it got there or what software created it, but it looks decidedly suspicious (although Symantec Endpoint Protection and Malwarebytes are detecting nothing).
Has anyone seen anything like this before?
Is this likely to be part of some malware?

For the past few days, while surfing the net, I have gotten 404 File Not Found pages. Not the normal kind, these are made to look like they are coming from Google. Moreover, I am getting them in places where I know I shouldn't. For example, I got one while surfing this board. Usually, if I hit refresh or go back and try the link again, the page comes up--eventually.

I get this page regardless of which browser I am using. I've got IE 7.0 and FF 2.0 installed.

Actions taken so far:
I have scanned my computer with the following programs:
Symantic Anti Virus
Bit Defender
Spybot Search and Destroy
Pest Patrol.

None of these programs found anything aside from a few cookies.

So color me stumped.

Have done a windows file check and no problems.

Please help ??? This is driving me nuts (well more nuts). I am a computer idiot but try hard so please have mercy.

Hello All -

I've been around here a couple of time in the last couple of years with my Vista machine and you all always seem to have the answers for me. So here I go again.

Now I'm sure there is a simple fix for this, but I can't seem to find it. ....

I happen to have two files now that I can NOT delete. I keep getting the message;

Could not find this item

This is no longer lacated in C:\Users\RoyBoy\Favorites.
Verify the item's location and try again.
Now, you know I'm looking right at the file (both in Window Explore - the shortcut, and in it's file location) and the item is there. What's the deal! I'll tell you that these are both Favorite Folders file types and they both have files that I'm trying to delete. You see, I tuned up all me favorites & reorganized things alittle and I did this with Chrome. BTW Then, wanting to sync those newly organized favorites to my Favorite Folder, I created a folder caller "Bookmarks Old" and moved all the old favorites into that folder. I opened IE8 and imported the the exported file from chrome and thus repopulated my Favorite folder. Now wanting to delete that "Bookmarks Old" and it will not let me.

Come on - there has got to be a simple fix for this. Please don't even go to the 'complete re-install' line

Thanks All!
(was just one -been around for a week or so, then just today another one is acting the same way)

I am using windows 7 with office 2010.

I am trying to use the text in an adjacent cell, a movie title, search a folder to find a shortcut to that movie title, and have it appear next to the title. I have been searching using Google, using small precise search terms such as "excel macro file" or "excel macro search for file". I have gotten kind of close to what I'm looking for, but not quite there.

Hopefully the code below will give the reader of this post a better idea of what I'm trying to do. I was initially thinking a search routine, but then realized that the path was always the same (all of these shortcuts are in the same folder), so why not just copy the text from the adjacent cell and "build" my own link. That's what the following routine does and it does work ... provided all the movies are the same format, i.e., .wmv, .avi, .mkv, etc., which they are not. As a result the only two choices I have would be to convert all the movies to the same format, which would take for ever, or use a search routine, which I haven't mastered, and where I need some help.
Here is the build your own link routine:
Sub Insert_Hyperlink2()
Dim Hold As String
' Macro1 Macro

Dim wsM As Worksheet, wsA As Worksheet
Dim isPresent As Boolean
Application.ScreenUpdating = False
' Relate the sheets to the variables

I am getting weird entries into ZoneAlarm so I did some reading here and followed some scanning instructions.

GMER did a long scan and showed "Admin/AppData/Local/Temp/mbr.sys -- System cannot find this file"

I used UNHIDE for all the drives and after that I downloaded COMBOFIX and saved it with a new name to the Desktop. I ran it and after a few seconds it announced a newer version was available and did I want to download it. I just got it from the Combofix website, so how can that be? I clicked "no" and a few seconds after that Windows Defender appeared in the System Tray (Notification Area). I do NOT have Defender operational and when I run it from the Start Menu, it shows it as "OFF."

Is this something I should be worried about?

I think I may need some help here.

I have a dell c810 with an external cd burner and nero 8 essentials installed. I have copied some music from cds into the media player and created a playlist of certain songs from that music. The playlist is called chicks. When I try to burn that playlist on to a cd the computer says to connect a cd burner. The hardware and software are installed properly and working properly. My second problem is the computer says it can't find the file the playlist is in. I canfind it in playlists so why can't the computer find it. I am at a loss. Update. I am able to get the computer to recognize the burner now and move the playlist to the burn column. But when I click start burn the burning process ends in a couple of seconds, a small window comes up that says the media player has encountered a problem while burning the file to the disc. For additional help, click web help. I do that and nothing happens. Also the burner says burn process complete. I am able to successfully copy a cd to a cd so the problem is not with the program or the cd burner.

A:file not found

could you try and see if you can burn something else, for example, a different song, or a file.
If it works with another file, i would say it is a problem with the play list.
If it doesn't then it probably is a problem with that specific file.
If you have reached a solution, please state so.
Hope it Helps!

Hello.Simple answer would probably be no. They aren't doing any harm or bothering you too much are they? They are older outdated drivers. However, as a general rule, if you are not 100% sure, leave the registry entries alone .You will want to read this page HERE for an explaination. With Regards,The Panda

Such messages often result when malware items have been removed...but startup items pertaining to such remain on the system.

Download AutoRuns for Windows - .

Click the autoruns.exe file.

Scroll down the entire list, looking for a reference in the Autorun Entry column...for the file you listed. If there is a check mark in front of it, remove it.

Reboot the system, see if the message still comes up.

I'll try making this short. My mouse freezes. I'm getting around it right now by plugging it into the port on the front of my computer. When it freezes I unplug and plug it back in to reset itself. I tried a repair with the installation cd and got message that said my F batch file was missing.I just did another attempt (I'm not very knowledgable with fixing computers) with the install cd to find my problem and got a message that the file cercsrb6.sys could not be found. I have XP and I hope I've given enough information so that someone guide me on what to do. I'd rather cut off my left little finger than call Dell. Thank you in advance.

Hello I need help...I am trying to install my HP all in one 2610 to my computer with Windows 7 64bit OS. When I go to the HP website and download the correct driver it runs and extracts just fine. The problem comes when the HP welcome page pops up to install. When I click on install it will start to run then immediately a box pops up and states file not found or can't be located 'something to that effect'. I found a post on this site that stated to go to the registry editor and enter a RunOnce key however I already had one. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Try the tool sfc /scannow, you'll need your xp cd handy. To do this go to Start>Run, type in sfc /scannow (make sure there is a space between sfc and /) follow instructions on the screen.

Every time I boot up my computer I get a pop up message saying "qt4.dll file not found.  Then when I click on okay it says daemon process is not working.  What does this mean??

A:qt4.dll file not found

There could be several possibilities. It could be a hardware, registry or malware related problem.
Start Windows in Safemode and do a complete virus/malware scan with your AV.
Use System Restore do undo any recent program changes.
Reinstall the program associated with .dll file. (Acrobat, may be associated with this file)
Run System File Checker by opening an elevated command prompt (Run as Administrator) then type sfc /scannow (note space between sfc and /scannow.)
If the above doesn't work, try updating Drivers and make sure you have the latest version.
Make sure you have all the latest Windows Updates, Service Packs and patches.
If the problem persists then more intensive tests should be ran including Memory and Hard Drive or try doing a Startup Repair or a Repair Installation.
Good Luck

Weird things here.
I have a Excel 2000 Workbook (A), which when opening, I am getting a box similar to a "Save To" box.
This box is titled "File Not Found" at the top of the box.
In the window that would normally be the "save to" window, a folder/file from an entirely different Excel Workbook file (B) is listed.
Nothing I've tried so far has helped stop this box from appearing each time I open one other particular Excel Workbook (A).
(A) & (B) are just to show that they are different workbooks.

Any suggestions?
Thank you for your help

Over last weekend I installed Norton Internet Security 2003. Concurrently (I'm almost positive) Windows (XP Home) began displaying a message on every startup that says, "Windows can not open this file: 00113201.rbf.
I asked Symantec whether the NIS installation could have caused this and they say this is not a Symantec file. They said, "Rollback script files (.rbs and .rbf) are backups of existing files. Files with a .rbs file extension are rollback script files and files with a .rbf file extension are backups of existing files, both are stored in hidden folders called Config.msi." Then they said, "The config.msi is an Operating System (OS) file."
I found the Config.msi file but it is empty. Explorer cannot find the 00113201.rbf file even with 'display hidden files' selected. Nothing else changed at the time this message began appearing.
In a subsequent replay they said, "These files are related to Microsoft Office 2000 suite." I have Office XP and have made no changes to it in months except to create new documents and modify old ones.

what is wrong with my new computer?!
i googled the problem and found out that memtest would let me see if my ram is the problem. i downloaded memtest which doesnt work on my win 7 coz its 64 bit and memtest doesnt support it at all.

Updated AdAware, installed new definitions, did a scan. During scan Norton found this:

Says it is a download trojan.

A look in the temp file showed the AAWTMP folder containing consectively numbered files with the numbers ending in 67-80.CPY with the 68 missing.

Decided to run the deep system scan and once more NAV finds the 68 again then quarantined two more 68 files and 10 other with new numbers. The 68 file had already been deleted from quarantine.

Another check of the TEMP file and the AAWTMP folder is no longer there.

Whatever it is nasty. Sent NAV into a looping mode that required a manual shut down.

Have downloaded the AdAware update and installed; newst version of Zone Alarm but not installed it.

What exactly is a CPY file? Should an AAWTMP folder be in the temp folder? Is it possible that AdAware "fixed" it? Do I have reason to worry? Will not delete quarantined items until I get some info and all info is appreciated.

I'm looking at a Toshiba Satellite L455D with Windows 7 home premium. It's has a hard drive about a year old, which I installed for the person at that time with a new copy of Windows. Now, it hangs at the 'starting windows screen.' Start up repair relays this message:

No OS files found on disk.
Repair action: Partition table repair
Result: Failed error code = 0x490

I had tried booting with the dvd prior to seeing this. When it asked what os i wanted to boot, it did list the current os.

The hard drive is listed correctly in the bios, so it is at least being recognized.

Start up repair seems to be suggesting that the hard drive is wiped, or bad.

If yes I'd try Safe Mode (just to see if operating system is functional) and/or last known good configuration. I kinda suspect from what you've already tried it won't work. In which case I think I'd just go for another clean install.

Hi kenduskeag !

What's your laptop's brand and model ? What CD did you use to reinstall ? Did you try to reinstall from scratch or a repair install ?

You can't use a retail XP CD to reinstall since it won't have the needed drivers for your hardware. If you didn't get any CD's with the laptop then look for some message at startup to access the recovery partition ("press xx to start the recovery process" or something like that) or order the recovery disks from the laptop's manufacturer's website (they'll charge you only the shipping fees, probably less than 20$).

Be warned that using the recovery partition or the recovery CD's will wipe your hard drive and restore the computer to the default settings. Don't forget to backup all your personal stuff to some external drive before you start the recovery process.

I have multiple problems so i will list them step by step. Here it goes.

Installed win7 ultimate x86 a year back. Used daz loader v1.7 (piracy i know). The system worked fine until now.
But since the past month i have been getting the "Windows not Genuine" and "You might be a victim of software counterfeiting" messages. The desktop is black with the little not genuine message in the bottom of the screen.
I tried using WAT Fix. No result. Then did a sfc scan. It shows that the pkeyconfig.xrm-ms file is corrupted (in the store too) and cannot be repaired. So i tried to replace the file from the setup. It did not solve the problem.
Then i came across fixes on google. When trying them out i came too know that slui.exe is not working.! I also tried out MBR Regenerator. It fixed my black desktop. But still under the Windows Activation page it shows Status Not Available and Product ID not available.
I never used removeWAT or any other similar software. Only used the Loader by daz.

I got 3 'file not found' entries in my Autoruns report (see below).

Having removed filters from the report, it looks like the files are there, but not where they are expected to be (am I correct with this interpretation?).

So should I be doing something like moving them to where they should be, or deleting the 'file not found' entries, or should I just leave well alone.

And if the answer is to move them, then can someone please explain how to do this - in simple language

A:File not found after Autoruns. Should I do anything?

Is there anything not starting that you want to start? If that's not the case then I would create a Restore Point to back up the Registry. Then run CCleaner Registry tool and let it search for issues. Select "fix all" issues. When it asks to make a backup do so and save the .reg file. This gives you a second way to restore the registry along with the Restore Point. Also you can use ERUNT to back up the Registry.

After CCleaner removes the Registry issues the dead entries should be gone.

Edit: Many programs when they uninstall just leave the Registry entries they added rather than risk corrupting the registry(and saving themselves debug time.) It's not uncommon to see file associations and other stuff for programs no longer on the machine.

I think CCleaner is generally safer than trying to clean up the Registry by hand.

When I boot my pc e/w Windows XP I get a dialogue box titled "Advanced INF Install". The message reads "could not locate inf file: C:\windows\onf\GETPLUSo.inf" I have Ad-Ware Plus on my PC and it notes there was a registry modification covering this same file. I can not load System Mechanic 7 update because of this problem. I googled and found this subject on microsolf.public.windowsme.general. I ran MSConfig from start menu looking on start tab for anything referancing
"getPlusUninstall_ocx". It was not there. Also, I have ZoneAlarm internet suite on my PC. Please advise how I can get past this problem.

You don't want to download infections.

You should go to Malware for a cleanup. If all you want to do is get rid of that message, then run Autoruns, find the entry, and delete it.

Hello, I am having problems with d3dx11_42.dll being missing from my computer. I am trying to play the game ArcheAge. At first, it was the file d3dx9_42.dll being missing. I fixed that, the game worked, and then I was messing around with graphics settings in the game to try and make it run better, switched to dx11, and now the game wont load again. I have tried downloading the file from, directx end user run time web installer, and the directx 11 downloads off of The web installer has an internal error when I try installing, and the dx11 is only a powerpoint when I download it. I have tried a few others too but nothing seems to be working. I have also reinstalled the game a few times with no luck. Any ideas? Thanks!

I do not remember ever seeing this file " autorun.inf" in my thumb drive before. Someone borrowed the thumb drive recently and it came back with this file that I clearly remember not being there before.

My antivirus is not able to clean the file. Should I go ahead and do it manually?

If this is some kind of dangerous file, then has it already sent any of my information (after I plugged in the thumb drive) to the party where it originated from?

Please help me and suggest what I should do.

I am trying to do a recovery of Windows XP Home Edition-SP2 from a CD-ROM. Reason: The current PC speed is low and a clean-up may help.

The PC (owned by my brother) is a Fujitsu Siemens notebook computer, type Amilo A 1655. After initiated the installation process I get the error message: Can not find the iaStor.sys file (actually the message is in Norwegian, so the translation may not be 100% correct) written in white text on blue background.
Further below it says: Installation failed. Press a button to restart.

I have checked and found that the iaStor.sys file is available in the following folders:
C:\WINDOWS\OemDir (854 kB) iaStor.sys
C:\WINDOWS\OEM\iaStor (467 kB) iaStor.sys
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers (854 kB) iaStor.sys
C:\WINDOWS\I386\$oem$\textmode (854 kB) iaStor.sys

Some advices found different places on the internet has been tested out, but so far without success. I am sure there is a solution.....

So hopefully there are somebody out there that could give me some more tips. Anyhow thank You for reading this post.

(tomorrow Barcelona - Manchester United) I will check for any feedback later this week.

Hello there!
I have got almost the same problems faced by Torbj?rn, but in my case I am dealing with a desktop. Pls see further details below.
The recovery CD does not work.
I have tried to make a new bootable CD (with nlite) following various forums ' direction with no results.
The new installation has never been completed. Now I am asked every time to choose either to continue the new installation (never getting to an end) or start the existing OS.
The system would still work almost fine and I could also give up the idea of cleaning the disk and reinstall the OS, but I would like to have back an ordinary start-up. What can I do?

I recently gutted my entire puter <foolishly> I was getting JAVA errors ...endlessly and thought I had done something to cause this . Now I have updated to IE8 which I think is fabulous and AOL 10.0 <not so fab> But I am now receiving IE box that reads Script is usually safe to run . Do you wish to run script < no details > yes or No option only . When I click the yes ...OR No the box stays for several clicks ???? will disappear then reappear . I have found it on IE 8 and Maxathon .It has done this for 2 days now it appears to be a new issue. I think I have run every program known to me in an attempt to solve this . Mozilla Foxfire is NO problem .The script issue does not appear there. I checked internet options for any differences in script options I checked and found none ??? With all else tried I attempted SFC with my disc LEGAL and Windows comes up with SYSTEM CAN NOT FIND FILE D:\i386\WINNTUPG\NETGRD.DLL. Setup Upgrade and SFC are not done because this file was not found . I find it quite simply .. but it is written with a CAPITAL I ... before the 386 . All else is identical . With my disc I would think Windows would simply correct this and continue ... but it does not . I really would prefer not to gut again . I am current with all my Windows updates and I am NOT at all "equipped" to play with Windows . Could I run sfc thru run box without my disc ? Simply change the I ? Welcome to TSG.

Yes, you can run SFC without a Windows CD, but I do not think it will fix the problem. Try a repair of IE8 using Add/Remove Programs from within the Control Panel.

I have had Autodesk Professional 2008 for some 6 months or so. About 3 weeks ago, my AutoCAD program would not open, saying it is missing the ac1st17.dll file. I have uninstalled and reinstalled Autodesk 4 times now per instructions from Autodesk and Autodesk support group, and end up with the same error every time. Hello -

This forum is for malware removal. There's nothing in those logs to suggest this is a malware problem. It seems more likely it's an application issue.

I'd suggest you follow up with your topic at the autodesk forum or their technical support, or here in the Windows XP section.

I received the message that wininet.dll is not found when loading windows. I tried going to safe mode and automatic restore to an earlier time, but it just keeps retrying to load normal windows.

I made a copy of wininet.dll onto a CD and tried to copy it to the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory through the task manager which is the only thing that allows me to get to the directories. Upon doing that I discovered that the file was already there, but when I tried to overwrite it or delete it or move it or rename it, I received the following message:

Data error (cyclic redundancy check)

I know what a CRC is but Why can't I get rid of the file that is there to copy the new one?

To make sure I don't have a hard drive issue, I tried renaming at least 20 other files in the directory and had no problem. Thus, the file must be corrupted, but why can't I get rid of it to copy a new copy?

Any idea on how to get around this keeping in mind that I can't run any programs and want to avoid reloading Windows XP Professional would be appreciated.

p.s. btw, I found the below done by miekiemoes from another post on the same subject which was very useful and got me to where I am above.

Normally when you log in in windows... you can open your taskmanager by pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL together.
In taskmanager, click > applications > new task > browse

Could someone please help me figure out what this path means?

c:\program files\\client\backup\RU

Under Run, Search, Files or Folders and entering Rundll32.exe, it found 2 items.
The first appears legitimate with Windows logo and appropriate location.
The second is a manilla folder. When I click on properties, it shows that (above) as the location and in the window it is called 24576_5b1361b85_ and that is also shown as the 'Description'. It's 3,022 bites and was created on Monday, January 8, 2001 and modified the same date one second later.
I'm having problems with Rundll32.exe and popups, VX2, and ads1.revenue, and no telling what else. I have posts in the HJT forum also but this file/path is new info and I'm not sure what it means.
Any ideas???
