Unable to view files in C:\Winnt\Downloaded Program Files

Q: Unable to view files in C:\Winnt\Downloaded Program Files

Hello, Please help me. I have Windows 2000 Professional. I'm pretty new to all this as I have only had a computer for about a week. I got some adware threats detected by Norton Antivirus 2004 and have done a lot of reading up and I am now tring to delete them.

One of the removal instructions provided by Norton promps me to delete a file in C:\Winnt\Downloaded Program Files but when I go to view this folder it looks like there are no files inside. Now, I know there are files in there as Norton Antivirus has picked up one in there and when I view the proporties for that folder it states there are 12 files inside but when I view the folder with Windows Explorer it appears empty!

I've gone into folder option and changed the settings so it shows hidden files and hidden system files yet this still doesn't let me view the files in this folder. How can I delete this file if I am unable to view it?

If anyone can point me to a turorial that explains this or explain it to me I would really appreciate this.

Please help a n00b.

Cheers, Luke.

A: Unable to view files in C:\Winnt\Downloaded Program Files

I'm assuming you have done this to Show hidden files and folders:
Go to Control Panel/Folder Options/View and select "Show hidden files and folders"

Also, place a check in "Display the contents of system folders"
And,uncheck "Hide protected operating system files(Recommended)"

If the above doesn't work try this:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced.
Create the REG_DWORD ShowSuperHidden (if it doesn't already exist) Set the value to 1, click OK, and close the Registry editor

Hi. I'm not sure where to post this topic... I am having problems with viewing any files after downloading them. They are mostly pdf. files. When the download is complete my computer tries to open them with windows picture and fax viewer and it cannot view them. I have tried accessing the files through the internet, but that doesn't work either. I don't know if it's a problem with my computer or some formatting problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A:Unable to view downloaded files

After downloading any file...Windows must have the program that relates to opening said file, that program must be installed already...or Windows will not be able to open the file. For .pdf files, I find the Foxit Reader to be a good install: http://download.cnet.com/Foxit-Reader/3000...amp;tag=button/Once this program is installed, simply right-click on any .pdf file you have...and select Foxit Reader as the program you want to always open .pdf files.Louis

My computers are both running Win 7 64-bit. I am thoroughly confused when it comes to placing programs that I download into their proper folders: That is, program files (x86) vs program files. I have read stuff on this, but still confused. for the most part, even when a dl'd program suggests being installed into PF, I, for whatever reason, place it into PF (x86). Although I have read that placing the program into the wrong folder may cause the program not to work properly, so far I have not had this problem...nor any other problems that I am aware of. Could someone please set me straight on this issue?

A:Program Files or Program Files (x86)-Where to place downloaded program

I let the installer put it where it is supposed to.

If I trust the software I trust they know best where it should be installed/placed.

If I can't trust the software maker why am I downloading/installing their program?

PLEASE HELP! In my Win-2000 sp4 PC, I am unable to remove files and folders in the C:\WINNT\TEMP folder, even as Administrator !!.

The TEMP folder has the following subfolders:
-Temporary Internet Files, -Cookies, -History, -unz52.tmp -NAILogs and - Webshots.Temp. even after having uninstalled WebShoots alltogether.
All thes are just stubborn !! :-( The error is either "Access denied..." or "File in use..." even tried -to no avail- in Fail Safe mode, or in Command mode, or even outside the current shell.

I have identical machines/OS, where the TEMP folder can be cleaned w/o any trouble. This machine used to have several parasites of the "websearch.com" sort (WinTools and HuntBar variants). Is it possible that some traces remain, which somehow left those folders limp, or perhaps for (or worse, IN) malicous use ???
please advice !! THANKS

Right click on the temp folder and go to properties, Security tab, click add, add your self, click ok, not make sure you have Full Control (all boxes checked under Allow), click OK. Now try the delete again.

I am a Windows XP user who just got a new computer with Windows 7. I seem to be having trouble understanding how to do some things I was doing in XP. I think it may be security-related, but being new to Windows 7, I could be wrong.

I regularly download documents in .jpg format from a web site. I select the document and click the Save button on the web site. I get a Save As box where I select where to save the file, and save it. In XP, I had setup a folder on the C: drive specifically for these files. I created the same folder in Win7. I went through the same process and selected the folder in the Save As process, but got an error "You don't have permission to save in this location....Would you like to save in the My Pictures location instead?". I clicked Yes. When I opened Windows Explorer and looked at My Pictures, the file wasn't there. I went back to the web site and saved the document again. However, the file appeared in the Save As box, and I was asked if I wanted to overwrite the file. Again, when I looked in Explorer, it didn't show the file. I even tried searching the entire C: drive, it says the file doesn't exist.

I am the only user account on my machine and have Admin privileges. I use IE8 with security set at medium-high. UAC setting is one below Always Notify. I looked at the properties on the folder I wanted to use, my Admin account has full rights. I set my regular user account to have full rights, but this did nothing to fix the... Read more

I hope someone can help me here. Recently, I have not been able to save pics I download from the net onto my hardrive. I am running XP pro and use AOL 8.0.

I right-click on the pic I want to save, click Save as, then ok. When I go to My Pictures to view the pic, there is only the JPEG Icon (orange salboat), and when i click on it, the Windows Picture Viewer says there is no preview available. I try to view it in paint as well, but the same thing happens.

Also, when I save it, the save box only gives me the choices of .ART or Bitmap. If I save it .ART, Windows gives me a message saying that it needs to know what program created it.

Does anyone know what the problem might be? Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance,
Abe

After a virus messing up my computer, the only solution to fixing it is to reinstall windows, however i have many files that i would like to copy to a CD so i don't lose them, the problem is that since the virus i can't copy or paste, i can't drag files, so i can't move them, and i can't use windows explorer or nero to burn files to a cd, as none of these work anymore. Could anyone suggest a program or something that i could download so that i can burn my files to cd?

An error messages appears whenever I try to extract a folder to Program Files. It reads 'Cannot create folder C:\Program Files\Mozilia Firefox\abc'. I tried to first create the folder inside Program Files manually and then direct the extraction to it when I was prompted to choose the destination but it still wouldn't work. It says 'Cannot create folder so and so' and under that 'Access is denied'. I am using the computer as an administrator so I was bewildered when the message appeared. I am thinking that somehow the setting is preventing me to take control over Program Files. Vista's not so user friendly in this aspect.

Any thoughts?

Am using 7-zip, and the only way I've found for moving files to program files, is by extracting them on my desktop, then move it over to the folder inside program files. Edit: Am mostly using the right click menu. Right click-> 7-Zip -> Extract and so forth...

I have two programs in this folder , one of which is my antivirus(norton) and the other is Download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab. I ran an hijack this log about a week ago and it did not show up on the log. Ikeep a log to compare readings, this scan it showed up on the hjt log. Are these programs already installed and can be deleted from the folder?

A:Downloaded program files?

The Norton one will be your update ActiveX,
The Flash is macromedia ActiveX control.

Both can be deleted,

However when you next update Norton it will be reinstalled, and by deleting the shockwave control will mean you will not be able to view some websites properly

Both are legitimate controls and can be safely left on your system

I have a Downloaded Program File entry, that has "unknown status", no creation date, and it says "none" under Last Accessed.

It does claim to be 4kb's in size.

This program file has no name, but instead, is a grouping of numbers and letters, all enclosed in parenthese..{}.

Highlighting it, and right clicking it only brings up the properties of the entry.

It cannot be deleted either from the keyboard, or from the menu...File>delete..Edit>cut.

The properties of this entry show it to be an Active X control, (with no creation date, no access date and no status. It does not appear to be damaged...it does not say that there are any damaged files associated with it).

I dont feel comfortable giving you the codebase http address, because Im not sure if it turns into a link that anyone can access. But I will tell you that it includes the words; fpdownload, macromedia, polarbear, ultrashim.cab

Using my search bar to go to that location brings me to a folder, with an apparent program that has yet to be installed.

There are 3 icons in this cab folder...a .dll icon, a configuration/notepad icon with the name "erma", and the remaining icon is an INSTALL icon.

Clicking on any of these icons brings up a command to "extract", or copy.

I do vaguely remember going to macromedia.com, (adobe.com) a couple of weeks ago, and downloading and installing the adobe flash player and the shockwave player. I seem to remember that when I first began us... Read more

I downloaded Norton Internet Security from the Net. Tried to install it but ran into a problem so I want to do an XP Home System Restore to a date earlier than the download. Doing so will lose all the recent downloaded Internet files so I need to find the NIS download file and burn it to CD before doing the restore. The desktop icon properties show the path but Windows Explorer only shows four temporary Internet folders, I think it creates new ones for each session, and I cannot find earlier ones. I've tried "show hidden files" but without success and have run a search in Explorer as well.

Any suggestions on how I can find older downloaded Internet files?

A:Where does IE6 put the downloaded program files?

Where the download is saved depends on your browser settings and whether you selected a folder at the time.
If you can remember the name of the downloaded file (or part of it) you can do a search for that file. If you cannot remember go back to the download site and follow the links to download and at some stage the filename will be visible.

I have "Damaged" downloaded program files, all of them at this status. What the heck could cause this? And what are these files in the first place? I have copied them prior to this damaged thing, on floppy disks. Do not know what the heck to do with the copies, but have them.
1-What are these "downloaded program files" and what do they mean to me, my system?
2-What could have caused them all to show as "damaged" in the status of each file? How do I figure out what caused this so it does not repeat itself? (had only 1 prob that day, with install of Microsoft updates?). Really think I should find out if I did something naughty that system did not approve of, so I can apologize to it and fix it up so it is happy with me again.
3-How do I use the copies of these files, if I need to, and do the "out with the old, in with the new" dance...how do I install the new files back into the system and get the damaged ones out?
Thanx for you help, again...have a great day!!

A:Damaged Downloaded Program Files?? What's this all about??

Downloaded program files are ActiveX controls and Java programs that are downloaded automatically from the Internet when viewing certain pages. They are temporarily stored in the Downloaded Program Files folder on your hard disk.

These can include perfectly legitimate applications, like Macromedia Flash player, Quicktime player, the Google toolbar installer, and the like, but also spyware.

The best way to view them is as follows:

Go to Internet Options > Temp Internet Files > Settings > Show Objects.

If any of them are damaged, right click them, and choose Remove from the context menu.

You'll just be prompted to download them again whenever Windows or an application needs them.

Cheers,

Hi
I have a desk top PC with Windows XP SP3 and use IE 8. When I clicked on Tools> Internet Options.>General Tab>Browsing History>Settings and then View Objects I found there were 17 entries with one dating back to 2005. Some entries are associated with programs that have long since been removed. Of the 17 files listed 10 were shown as "Installed" in the Status column while 6 were shown as"Damaged" and 1 as "Unknown".
Some of the "Damaged " files have either "none" in terms of size or "none" shown as a creation date.
Can anyone tell me whether or not it is safe to delete these entries?
I would appreciate any advice

All of the Downloaded Program Files on my WinXP were listed as "damaged". So... I went off road and just simply deleted the file...the Downloaded Programs File, not each seperate file, as I had some type of error when I tried to do so, I believe something about the file was being used somewhere else, to close everything and try again, but would not delete no matter what I closed down.

Now, go figure, there is no longer a Downloaded Program File on the system.

My question is...does this return when there are new files that are downloaded for use? Or???? This is sounding more and more like an X-Files case...should have not cancelled the show!

Thanx for your time and help!! Hopefully I will get it some day!!

Good evening everyone---

First, I will state that I'm using WinXP Home and IE6...

I was wondering if anyone could please tell me how to get the files within the C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files folder to appear? It used to display all the active x controls and plugins that I had downloaded, but now it shows zero items? However when I right click on the folder and choose properties it says it contains 6 files. They also do not appear under add/remove programs in control panel.

I would like to get these files to appear, so that I can right click on them and choose the remove option.

If it isn't possible to get these items to appear, is there some command I can execute in order to remove/unregister these active x controls/plugins?

Much Thanks in advance!

Hi, I am still having a problem trying to get rid of a file dealing with Dialer.one0none. The only time this shows up is when running Norton Anti Virus scan, as being in c:/windows/downloaded program files\109554.exe. I cannot delete it using NAV. The folders are lodged in my downloads library where I have been unable to open them and I have no idea where the have been located.

I would be gratful if somone can assit me.

A:Unable to open downloaded video files from download library.

Google "convert FLV to MPEG" without the quotation marks.
You should find a free converter at cnet in the first entry.
Don't forget to watch the install carefully to UNcheck the install of any "extras".

I am a novice but am assuming I have or had a bug that altered my hard drive.  I ran AVG and and vaulted anything suggested I also cleared all cookies and cleaned the recycle bin.  Everything seems to be running fine now EXCEPT that anything I try to download or run seems to be disappearing.
I regularly download zip files with pictures for work via YouSentIt.  Now when I download I get the usual dialog box, pick where I want the file to download and it looks like it completes the process.  Then I open my picture file and the download is not there.

Please don't suggest I download a file...because I can't! I've tried so many forums that give links to download and nothing happens.  I even tried in safe mode and still unable to do anything!

Please HELP! I dont know what to do next.

I'm running XP SP2.

I have a external USB HD that I use to store music files on. Just recently I noticed that I'm unable to view some files in one particular folder. It seems that all files from F to Z are gone. I redownloaded the MP3's and when I moved them into the folder I got a message saying a file with the same name already exists. All other folders on the drive are fine. I checked the Folder Options and everything looked good. A google search turned up empty.

Any suggestions?

I just realized that if I type in the full path of a folder I can get to it... yet it doesn't appear if I browse to it. Am I going crazy?

I have a client who is having a problem with his 2 remaining XP systems. It's an auto repair shop and they use an online site to view schematics for vehicles, wiring, etc. These schematics are all in PDF format.
Many of them are viewable with no problem, but many are no longer viewable on the XP systems when using IE8. When you click the link on the page, for a minute fraction of a second you see the diagram flash in the window frame and then it goes blank. If you
use another browser such as Firefox all the PDFs view just fine. But this client doesn't like change (hence the XP systems still in use) and doesn't want another browser but wants to keep using IE.
I have uninstalled Adobe Reader and reinstalled it, installed FoxIt Reader, reset IE several times, made sure all cache was cleared out. Nothing helps. So it appears that the problem is specific to IE8 since Firefox can display the PDFs fine on those same
XP systems. I've also tried changing preference settings in Adobe Reader security and internet sections but they didn't help.
When you login to the website it flashes a message about "checking your browser" but doesn't give any errors as if the checks were passed.
So I'm checking here to see if someone might have an idea of something I may have missed. I believe that there must be some incompatibility at that site with IE8 that isn't detected, but I don't want to assume that if there is something else that can be
done. I'd love for him to just use Fir... Read more

I understand the process of how to remove downloaded Active X controls using the Disk Cleanup Utility.

My question is, exactly how many versions of the same Active X control do I need to keep?

For example, I have 3 Java Runtime Environment 1.6.0 controls showing in the list.
Two of them were installed on 07-28-2010 and are both for updates. They appear to be the same kind of control as each other.

The third is called "Classic Java plug in for Netscape and ..?' which I don't know where that came from....if it was an option in an update, I didn't choose it. I wouldn't choose that because I don't have/use Netscape. It was installed on 2-2-2011.

Can I remove the classic plug in for Netscape and one of the other update controls?

Thanks!
p.s.....I am utilizing your suggestion page about "Slow Computers/browser ..check here first". this is where my question originates from. I run XP Professional Service Pack 3.

When I change the view in the folders options to see hidden files , nothing happens. When I click on apply and go back to view the files I am still not able to view the files. If I then open the folder options again it is still clicked on " do not show hidden files or folders".
It seems I am unable to change this even though I am logged in as Administrator. There is only one account on the pc.

All I see for each file is an empty box outline with a sort of jagged lightning symbol in the centre. HELP!

A:PMB - Unable to view video files

You most likely need to update your version of PMB - it is up to at least v5 as far as I can see - your video files may not be able to be read by your older version.
This Sony site has the newer version that is supported by Windows 7 - try downloading and installing it.

There is a super long story to why I am hooking up my HD through USB to view the log files but it ends with my computer not booting at all.

What I am trying to do is view the log files from my other HD through a USB hook up. I found the files here:

I:\WINDOWS\system32\config

But when I use the Event Viewer to open them I receive this message:

Unable to complete the operation on "Log Name".
The event log file is corrupted.

So, I even downloaded Event Log Explorer to see if I could open them and it does "open the file" but shows no contents BUT there is definitely contents because you can open the file as .txt and view the encryption.

I'm desperate to know what is in the log files because I have literally troubleshot every piece of hardware on my rig with the same result even though the hardware is working properly.

Any help on how to open these files would be appreciated I would even be willing to post them or send them for anyone who thinks they might have some software that could do it.

Thank you for your time,
~Steve

Hi there, I have a Dell inspiron 1525 laptop with Windows Vista Basic and a really strange occurance happened to me while I was saving a document from Mirocsoft Office Word. When I when to go save it there was no text box to rename it or choose the file format. Then I went to open up Explorer and there was no directory only the the C: drive, CD drive, and other drives but when you click to explore them theres nothing inside! It wasn't deleated or anything because the hard drive still showed memory was used. Even when I opened up Control Panel there was nothing there! Just a window with nothing in it.

But after restarting it, it was perfectly fine...
then happend again a week later. Restarted it. and it was fine.

I don't know if I have a virus, or something. I did scan it for viruses but nothing came up.
I recently had the "blue-screen-of-death" happen I'm not sure if that has any relevence though.

I would really apprecitate it if someone could tell me what the problem was, and if my files are at risk.
If not, then would replacing the hard drive work?

Please bare with me with technical infromation, I'm not too bright with computers.

My problem is that Iím unable to view any files on PC3 even though Iíve enabled sharing on C: drive. When I go to My Network Places and try to add a network place for PC3, Iím able to view the pc name and itís c drive but not itís contents. Itís telling that I might not have permissions to view these files!!

When I look at my network connections, I see something I donít see on my other pcís. In addition to my LAN connection, I have an ICS service. I can remove this service (add/remove programs) but it always returns when I go through the network setup wizard.

Iím not a network wizard but I do have some knowledge in this area. Greatly appreciate any suggestions because Iím totally stomped at this point.

Did I change a setting?

I was able to view and delete (at will) temp internet cookies (My computer > Local Disk (C > windows > temp). I would then see the cookies > alt - a - delete. Was able to do this 1x per wk.

Now when I open temp there are files: Cookies/history/temp files. (these may have been there before) When I open any of these files I now get "index.dat file", click on that and I get notepad showing this: client urcache MMF ver 5.2 @ (and something that looks like an E about 15 spaces away from the @. But no cookies are showing.

I feel I probably changed something that may have caused this but have no idea what. Any suggestions????

A:Unable to view temp internet files

Still having this problem. Any idea why I'm seeing "index.dat file" in cookies and temp internet folders instead of the list that I used to always see.

I'm able to delete cookies and files in "internet options" still. I just used to do the other as an extra step sometimes - no I can't and I can't figure out why.

hello & welcome to TSF ,

do this first

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps

Greetings,
Running XP PRO. When I send files to the Recycle bin and then double click on the Desktop Icon to view them there is nothing there. However, if I click on 'file' it will ask me if I wish to delete 'all of the (23) items'? Clicking 'yes' will empty the bin. Problem is I am unable to see what I am deleting. Have tried the 'Property Tab' and have the first six items checked in 'view details'.
Visited MS/Support and checked out Q136517, no luck here either. For the life of me I do not remember when I first noticed this phenomena....I use NAV2K current and UTD scanned yesterday no virus present. Use AdAware twice weekly always find hits here and delete 'em...also use SurfSecret continuously and it dumps my 'cookies' everytime my Browser closes.
It sure does beat the bejeepers outa me for sure.Other than this my eMachine D2266 runs just great, no other problems or slowdowns etc. It's another MS Windows mystery......

I received this muli-media cd and I am unable to view the mulit-media files on the cd. This is a original (not a copied cd) multimedia cd. I did some re-search and found this about the cd.
The big problem is that this CD-ROM was released in 1996, and due to some idiocy (Microsoft suddenly changed all their Windows95 multimedia drivers the day this CD came out) it takes a skilled user or a few tricks to access this CD-ROM part at all. If you're tryin to do so, I recommend to use the software "ISO-Buster" that is able to 1) access the CD-ROM content, copy the files to your computers HD and there you go. Difficult, but worth the try
I am not able to see the muli-media files when I open the cd in disc drive and look at the folder. I tried and sucessfully download this ISO Buster software. Using this software I am able to see the files. However the software will not copy the files to the hardrive.
Does anyone have suggestions of software that will do this for me.

Hi there

Would really appreciate some help with this as it's driving me mad! A friend of mine new to computers recently managed to get the annoying Spyaxe virus on his computer. I got it off ok for him using various programs such as ad-aware etc. and everything is all back to normal and running fine.

Now (a week later) there is the problem that the internet is all running fine however he is unable to connect to certain sites/servers. I cannot work out what is wrong as it views all sites fine but when I click on a specific link, for example to download a PDF file a new screen opens up but just remains blank with the hourglass timer showing. If I click stop on the browser, the adddress it is trying to connect to shows in the address bar and then if you hit the enter key it goes to the address perfectly and the PDF file can be seen immediately.

Also, when you go to a radio station website and click to listen the same happens and a new blank screen opens but no connection to the audio is made. I cannot do the same here as with the PDF files as the screen disappears.

All the relevant software is installed to hear radio and it all worked perfectly until when I removed the adware I think. Is it something to do with the security settings? Have checked them and cannot see anything wrong or any reason to block these kind of files. It seems the computer has a problem with redirects to certain sources on the internet.

Would really appreciate some help on this

I have ME for my OS and Windows Media Player as my default player. I also have Real Player and QuikTime. When viewing my local newspaper site I am unable to view any video stories. I receive no message, no window, it just does nothing. At work, I can view these video stories. I've fumbled through my settings but cannot find anything to change. Of course, I also don't know what I"m looking for either. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks so much,

A:unable to view video files on some sites

Some of those sites require activeX to be enabled. Check your browser > Tools > Internet Options > Security > 'Custom Level' and make sure you have activeX enabled or 'prompt'.

If you are running a firewall, there may be a setting there as well. Usually found in Privacy settings.

Hello everyone. I know there's probably been posts similar to mine, but I have not learned all I wanted from previous posts. Recently, my hard drive gave out on my XP computer. The issue seems to be that it will not be read as a master drive, but will run fine as a slave on my other XP computer. That being said, I can view the general program files, ect. on the drive when viewed with Explorer in my Computer, but cannot access my pictures and music and such. As mentioned in similar post, the same amount of usage is being reported, but not all of that data is viewable or present. How can I access my pictures and music? (I understand from other posts that it might have something to do with it being password protected if my previous computer installation of XP was password protected?)

A:Unable to view administrator files on slave drive

User Permissions

Its more down to user permissions, you dont have permission to access it, Personally i would take the hard drive and slip it in a computer with windows 7, then reset the permissions to whicherever user i want ( this is done by right clicking the drive/folder and changeing under the permissions tab)

God luck

Hello, I have a Windows 7 Ultimate.

Recently I have been unable to change or even access some settings on my pc. I can't access user accounts- when I click on it, nothing happens. Same with other stuff like my screen saver and sounds. This is also happening when I click on the properties of a file. I right click on the file, click properties and nothing opens. This happens with all files (folders, pictures, documents...).

I have run several antivirus scans on the computer, opened it in Safe mode, done the sfc/scan too. Nothing has appeared to be wrong apart from the above.

You should only have one anti-virus. More than one can cause them to conflict with each other.

Hi - newbie question here. I've looked over the Internet for a solution, but although I go into Disk Management and right-click my Seaport external hard drive, the only options I get are "New Simple Volume," "Properties," and "Help." I'd like to assign a letter to it but I don't know how. Can you help? Thanks in advance!

If those are your only options then something has happened to your drive and the partition has been wiped. Your only option is to create a new volume and start again. I would then run HD Tune and check to see if the drive is failing

Hello Rupesh, and welcome to Eight Forums.

As a test, see if using step 4 or 5 in OPTION ONE of the tutorial below to have hidden files show may help. If the files were set to be hidden somehow, then that may explain why you don't see them when they are actually there.

Ok.. let me see if I can explain this.

My network is setup like this: the DSL is connected to a router (routerA). This router (routerA) is connected to a WinXP system (system1) (pretty much running as a file server) and, through cat-5 cables, to two other routers (routerB and routerC). One of these routers (routerB) is connected to two iMacs and a WinXP system (system2). The other router (routerC) is connected to a WInXP system (system3) running as MediaCenterPC and, wirelessly, to a Win98 laptop (system4).

Ok, now I can view, access and edit any shared file on any of the WinXP systems. The problem comes in when you try to access or edit certain files (mainly RARs and PDFs) stored on the WinXP system3 from the Win98 laptop. From the laptop, I can see all of the shared files, but if I click on certain RAR or PDF files on system3, I get "cannot open" errors. And it doesn't happen on all of them. Some open just fine. And the ones that don't open, open just fine from any other system.

I hope that I have explained this ok. Any help will be great!

Gary,

I followed the Prep Guide at step 6. Since I can not connect the ASUS Laptop to the internet, I downloaded the DDs.com file on my clean computer and saved it onto a Flash drive and then copied it to the ASUS Laptop desktop. I double clicked on the Desktop icon, got a "User Account Control" window which said, "Do you want to allow the following program from an unknown publisher to make changes to this computer?" and I clicked yes, and it appeared to start for two seconds with the rotating blue arrow around the cursor; however, it never ran, loaded the option screen (DDS: Settings) nor produced the small balck screen. As a result, no DDS.txt or Attach.txt files were created.
Prior to this, I had tried to run Malwares as a com file and it failed also. In fact, I tried to run Malwares in all the cameleon forms and none ran.
The issue with the computer is that other than certain system tool exe files, like regedit, chkdsk, file manager, defrag, and the like, no other file can be opened. I even tried a flash drive boot start of Hitman Pro Kickstart and it would not run.
The computer is a ASUS G60vx, Win 7 64 bit OS.

I am trying to fix my son's ASUS Win 7 64-bit laptop which will not open exe files for loaded programs (like word, virus checkers, firefox, etc.); it will open all Win 7 services exe programs (like regedit or chkdsk). I have fixed the registry root file with a registry script that I found on the internet in two or three places (and they were consistent). I checked the registry file and all the fixes are in place; however, I still can not open programs. I was wondering if any Win 7 geeks might know of what I was missing or could look at in the registry to make the exe files open. If you need any added info, let me know and I will provide it. Thanks in advance for any help.

I purchased Bit Defender Internet Security for my XP machine a few weeks back and began having issues with the firewall being disabled. Their tech support said to uninstall the software, and install it again. While doing the uninstall it threw an exception saying it encountered an issue, and died locking me out of my program files directory.

Is there any simple way to gain access to this directory? And yes I am setup as an administrator.

Also my wife is an admin and her profile has no problem accessing this directory.

A:Unable to access program files...

Hi there,

Belive the issue will be with security settings. Logon as your wife and go to windows file explorer. Right click the program files directory and click on properties, click on the security tab. Make sure that the administrators group has full acces along with the system account. Also check that users have read access. You may also have an account called power users, make sure they have read and write permissions.

Apply this then click on the advanced settings. On the permissions screen click "Replace permissions on all child objects....".

Click apply. If windows shows any errors with applying these setting you may need to click the owner tab in the advanced section and set the administrators account as the owner. Also click the tick box replace owner on subcontainers and objects. Then try the pirmissions part again.

Hope this helps

Hi, I just tried downloading an exe file to the "Program Files" folder & was not able to in Win 8.1 pro. I get the attached message. I believe I was able to save files in this folder in win 7. I am the admin. Any clue why this happens? Thanks!

A:Unable to save in Program Files

Hello Zilla,

Even in Windows 7 you are not allowed to save directly to a system folder location from an external source (ex: internet, USB).

Instead, you must save to one of your user folders (ex: Desktop, Downloads...), then you (if administrator) will be able to copy/move the file into a system folder and approve to do so.

This is done for security purposes to prevent external sources from having access to system files and folders.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I had a suite of programs that I wanted to uninstall. In Control Panel I chose to install the suite. There was an error. I tried to reinstall the software but still couldn't uninstall a dialog box opened and said the suite was already uninstalled. and offered to delete the entry. None of the programs worked so i assumed they were correct. Now I want to delete this suite from the programs directory but Win 7 complains that there is a file from the folder open somewhere. I made a clean boot and tried again. I looked in System processed under task manager but there is nothing there.

So, to make a long story short, I want to boot in Safe Mode and see if I can delete the folder. The problem is, I don't know how to get that choice! I rebooted and held down the F12 key but all I get is a selection of drives to boot from. I am running an Acer X3910, Win 7 Ultimate in 64bit mode.

Thanks,
Paul

I had a few problems, which I hope have been resolved, but I still have two downloaded files which say they are damaged.

In XP using IE, Tools -> Internet Options -> Settings -> View Objects
the following files have the status "damaged:"

Async Downloader Class
cpbrkpie Control

A. Do I fix them? Delete them? Ignore this?
B. What is the likely cause of this? Virus? Worm? Spyware?

When attempting to load a second virus software, the following file was deleted from my Temp Internet Files: C:\Documents&Settings\my name\localSettings\temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\ECJHRSQ9 motiveSB.exe
Was this something sinister? It seems to have fixed everything except my mouse (2 of the 5 buttons don't operate as programmed and I'm having no luck finding new drivers for it).

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I have been told that cpbrkpie is a virus. I tried to remove it, but my wireless optical mouse doesn't work in safe mode for some reason.
Also, my wireless router is giving me grief and I had to bypass it to get online.

Hello. Recently my father downloaded a Windows update thing that included the newest version of Windows Media Player, and since then I have had trouble getting my preferred media player to work with files. I can still open up it up and select a file, but it is impossible to add it to the "Open with" list, which is annoying. No error messages pop up or anything, but when I go to Browse in the "Open with" window and select the program, it just reverts to the (unchanged) "Open with" window. Thanks in advance.

A:Unable to select a specific program to open files.

Goto My Computer > Folder Options, and click the File Types tab. Find the file extension of the video you're trying to play (avi, mpeg, etc) and click Change.

From there you can select your preferred media player from the program list, or click browse and navigate to the exe of the media player.

Hope that helps.

I don't know how this happened, but it's terribly annoying. Everytime I open an application where I have to browse for a file to upload, it opens for 2 seconds and then closes the program completely. For instance, I tried to browse a file in my videos to upload a onto windows movie maker, and it completely closed windows movie maker and the my videos folder. I ran AVG Anti Virus, Malwarebytes, and nothing. I also tried to do a system restore, but I can't because I can't go back on the calendar to find a later date that my computer was restored. I'm so frustrated and I'm ready to throw my laptop out of the window. I think this started when I tried to download a dvd to avi converter called vidomi. Everything was fine until I downloaded and ran this. I deleted vidomi from my computer though.

Please help me!

Thank you!

Hello -

I'm uncertain that any malware removal will address the issues you're describing. It may well be that justpassingby's recommendation of reinstall is still the path you'll end upon; however, I do see signs of an infection which warrants investigating.

I need a bit more information, please.

Download RSIT by random/random and save it to your desktop.
Double click RSIT.exe to start the tool and click Continue at the disclaimer.
When the scan completes it will open a log named log.txt maximized, and a log named info.txt minimized.
Copy (Ctrl+A then Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the contents of log.txt here.
Please attach info.txt to your post.

Recently I automatically updated windows, and I must have downloaded an update which blocks some files. I am unable to view or open any picture file (jpeg, png.) Right Click --> Properties states "This file came from another computer and might be blocked to help protect this computer."

I click unblock and I still can't view it.
I tried gpedit.msc, but I have home edition so it isn't installed.

So far I have only noticed picture files, but others may be blocked too.

A:Picture files security - unable to open in any program

This feature was added in Service Pack 2. To unblock a file which was downloaded from another computer do the following:1. Right-click on the file in question.2. Click Properties from the context menu3. In the box that appears, click the Unblock button4. Click OKGeek information:Windows XP SP2 and higher marks files downloaded from another computer with an NTFS named ADS called Zone Identifier. Any file containing this data stream will be blocked. There are several ways to strip a file of this stream. One is mentioned above. Another is to copy the file in question to a drive formatted in another filesystem (FAT32, for example) and then copy it back again. Windows strips out ADS's when copying files to other filesystems that don't support ADS's. Yet another method is to use an ADS editing program to manuall delete the stream.

The same program is showing under programs from the start bar. When I try to right click and delete it there, there is no option to delete it. It opens to empty.
