Monitor reverted to 4-bit

Q: Monitor reverted to 4-bit

The XP logo on startup is fine, but the welcome screen and everything else is in 4-bit, and after a while, it gets worse, overlapping screens, flickering... very annoying and impossible to do ANYTHING. First, I tried simple things, like properties, settings... nothing. Then I tried updating the monitor driver. Nothing. I installed a new NVIDIA driver. Nothing. GeForce? Nope. So, I am hoping that someone out there has had the smae problme and knows how to fix it. Thanks in advance!

Hi,

My laptop has a web Cam built into it
sound card,
Switch to wireless mode,
Press and hold the Fn Functionality button to activate other options eg; brighten up screen or raise and lower volume etc...
That all worked when I had vista installed, but when I installed XP Professional, things have strangely disappeared eg web cam not working and the little sound symbol that you get in the bottom right hand corner isn't there and the other things I have mention above.
Will some one be as kind to offer advice on what too do?

Here's what I have done to try to fix it I bought a program Driver Robot and reinstalled all little drivers you don't think about. Amongst Installing it all I managed to install a sound hardware called Sigma Tel Audio which doesn't work at all.
When you click on device manager you'll find it has a quotation mark on it.

Are laptops built to a default windows which can only be the "Only" windows installed on it??

Cheers
Brad.

It didn't "revert back to SP1", it just didn't install. Thus the could not install notification.

As for why this happened, there are various reasons, one of which could be a patch or two missing. Make sure you have "all" important and reccommended updates, then try again.

Look through this link for some suggestions...Vista SP2 is out

Reverted back to W7 from W10 on grandsons Laptop using the Samsung install disk but cannot get it to install updates. Disc came with SP1 on it and about 4 years old if that makes any difference,
Windows updates just shows the updating and does nothing.
Apart from Downloading IE11 from the Microsoft sight nothing else updates. laptop is sluggish and struggles to cope with little things.
tried one of the Microsoft fix its which repaired 3 things but still will not download updates.
probably something simple any ideas welcome.

I upgraded an installation to Win 10, and I didn't like it too much, so I did the revert back to 8.1 feature (you have 30 days to change back). When I went back to 8.1, a pop up malware started happening. I had it about a year ago, and thought it was gone. Voicefive survey browser pop up. Seems kind of weird how it returned out of the blue.

Anyhow, I've tried a bunch of tools to attempt ridding this thing from the PC, but it keeps coming back. Also read online for hours, and there does not seem to be a way to kill this thing short of resetting the browser. I really don't want to do that. Passwords, settings, favs, plugins. I use firefox as main browser, but I remember this bug going across all browsers.

What's even more strange is that I have a dual boot to Win 7 also, and the same infection appeared on that one as well. Just seeing if anyone knows about a program that can get rid of the voicefive popup. It appears as a pop-under ad in a small window. Still no combofix for Win 8.1?

Brand new Lenovo z580 with I5 3 series 6gb ram etc Win8/64 HP plus Avast AV.

Initial windows updates download and install, then on rebooting it gets to approx 10% install, and then reverts updates and reboots again.

I can see from update history rhat 13 updates have succeeded of which 7 are for Office and 2 for Intel.

I've tried the repair tool, which said it fixed a couple of things, but frankly has made no difference. Unfortunately I get no diagnostics on why all these other updates are reverted.

Any advice? Thenks.

A:New system updates reverted.

Install only important updates first, once theyre successful then do the optional updates..

As long as the harddrive is active, the system is busy, you may just have to wait it out..

unplug all unnecessary USB devices then try again

Okay, it was a stupid thing to do but I tried Windows 10 last night. It installed successfully but I didn't like it. It had the option to revert back to Windows 7 so I did. Now it won't open. I used Windows Recovery Environment to repair the boot problems I thought it might have. (MBR, BCD) That didn't work. It will open fine in safe mode but not in normal mode. It goes straight to the Windows Recovery Page. Any help would be appreciated.

My pc is a Dell Optiplex 760 desktop,

A:Win 7 won't boot after I reverted back to it from Win 10

Gazzer mate I don't know quite what you want to do but if you have all your data saved then you could try a factory restore because if it was a factory installed 7 then there would be a factory recovery partition that when used will take the machine back to as it came out of the manufacturers site - as new . Now this will lose the data and programs of course which is why I asked if you have your data backed up.

Now what you do is to hit the restore key while booting in most cases but beign a Dell I am not sure but this may give you a few options

Let us know how you go.

Just as a by the by mate what didn't you like about 10 as I resisted for some time and there are ways of setting it up to look like 7 and personalise it to your particular tastes. Myself I have it set to just show me the Control Panel This PC (Computer) ans System Configuration plus the weather and photos at hitting Start I got rid of all those ridiculous apps like crushed candy games News and suchlike.

I have a friend who wants some help. She has a computer that was used by her grandson. It was Windows 8 when she got it but we upgraded it to 8.1 and set it up as her computer. She has been using it for about eight or nine months now with no problems, it seemed there was no trace of her grandson't stuff but she has just rung me to say that when she turns it on now, it goes to the log in part for her grandson and she also thinks it is now Windows 8. again, not 8.1. I have to help her tomorrow and would appreciate any suggestions of how it can be fixed. Has anyone else had this happen?

Thanks,
Unibeck1

A:Windows 8.1 apparently has reverted to 8

First off verify that it is in fact 8.0 and not 8.1. Open the System screen and see what it lists under Windows edition. On my PC in small print it says Windows 8.1, but the large blue text to the right just says Windows 8. If it is Windows 8.0, my guess is the grandson did a factory recovery to fix or cover up something he did. If it is just Windows 8.0, doing all the available Windows updates should make the upgrade to 8.1 available as an option in the Windows Store. You do the upgrade though the windows store. There has been something strange going on with a shared PC at work for a while. Files have been disappearing, whole folders have been disappearing. I removed the two SATA hard drives and ran a data recovery utility on them while they were connected to another PC by a HDD dock. I was able to find the files I was looking for, but when I reconnected the drives, the PC had reverted back to its state from about two or three years ago. Programs, files-everything that had been updated is gone. Is it possible that I did not reconnect the drives correctly? I handled them very carefully. I've done this before and I've never had this issue. P.S. The initial issue (data disappearing) seems to have had something to do with system updates. Any help would be greatly appreciated as our QuickBooks files and everything are at stake here. Thanks.

I believe that Quickbooks files are stored online these days...the base program can be downloaded/installed anytime, in my experience with a home user.  Your problems could be an indicator of hard drive problems, IMO.

I was working on my Uncle's office PC installing 13 Optional Updates including NetFramework 4.5.2 which had queued for restart.

During the interim Malwarebytes found what appeared to be serious infection Rogue.multiple (it said it Quarantined but isn't in that file) which when googled said needed ComboFix. I ran Combofix which found a jumble of what appears to be spyware but which could be more serious - I'll upload it to Security for analysis.

But this post concerns the Updates which had been forgotten so after Combofix reboot started to install and then Reverted back for 20 minutes, then a restart, then Windows started very sluggishly to the desktop. I Checked for Updates and it had 3 minor Optionals but none of the other ones it reverted.

I brought the PC home and now there are 12 Important and Optional Updates which seemed to install but again at reboot Reverted Back quickly shutting down, then at startup said Configuring, got up to 35% and changed to Welcome. Do I need to reset Updates?

Your informed advice is greatly appreciated as I'm getting ready to travel and need to have this fixed.

A:Reverted back - Where did those Updates go?

I don't see anything particularly nasty in the Combofix log - there are a couple of PUPs there, but nothing really bad.
I'd do a reset of WU and see if that makes any difference.
Post your C:\Windows\windowsupdate.log file before and after, and I'll see what I can see. (but it may not be in time for you)

as the topic says, i tried installing the newest ie, but instead it got reverted back to ie6 for some strange reason. already had an earlier build of ie8 installed with no problems at all, but this one really doesnt want to be installed.

i read a couple of ppl stating that sp3 is some sort of a problem. should i try removing sp3, then install ie8, and then install sp3 again perhaps?

A:cant install ie8, reverted back to ie6

I don't have an answer for you. However I must post this caution for members who may download IE8 to try and help you. Please note that this program is a pre-release beta version of a product and not completely tested to ensure its stability or reliability. What is beta software? After an initial round of in-house testing, software publishers often release new programs to be tested by the public. These pre-release versions are called beta software, usually denoted by a "b" in the version number, e.g., Netscape Navigator 2.0b5. Since the publisher couldn't possibly test the software under all possible conditions, it is reasonable to expect that wider use of the software may uncover problems that were not discovered during in-house testing. The publisher expects to be notified when users find such problems so that the program can be fixed before its official release. In general, you should expect to run into bugs whenever using any piece of beta software. These bugs may range in severity from minor features that don't work to problems that cause your computer to crash. You should decide whether the benefit of new features in a beta program outweighs the risk of program instability before choosing to use a piece of beta software. You should also be aware that UITS will not have thoroughly tested beta software, nor will the software be guaranteed by its maker, so you should not expect the same level of support as you would receive for an official release version of the prog... what appears a state they may have been 3 months ago. My sites (like bleepingcomputer, reddit, etc.) where I clicked "remember me" when I originally logged in, no longer do.

Much shareware I have which I long ago entered registration codes for now acts like I just installed the programs as unregistered.

I did not rollback my PC to a prior state, etc..

For those familiar with Sandboxie:

I have a registered version. It still "knows" it's registered but has partially erased the sandboxes, (they are still in the sandbox sub, but Sandboxie doesn't "know" it),and Sandboxie started a new config file.

What might cause this to happen?

Thank you.

I had something strange happen on one of my laptops couple a days ago.

I opened it up. I'm on XP. The first thing I noticed was that my Show Desktop icon in the bottom quick-launch bar was missing. Other icons were all there.

Next I opened Google Chrome, and the bookmarks bar was gone and my start pages had been replaced with the standard "new tab" page that you see when you click open a new tab (big icons for Chrome Web Store, Gmail, Youtube, Google search). I also noticed that a Skype button had been added at top right next to Settings icon.

The next thing I saw was that when opening up MS Word or Excel, I get a dialog box that says Windows is installing something or other, to insert the disk. At another point it asked in a dialog box to enter my name (first box) and initials (second box). I don't remember seeing that one before. Initials?

Skype was logged out, it's normally set to sign in automatically. My username and password were not in the sign-in box, those were blank.

Firefox seemed unaffected.

Hoping there's a simple standard explanation for this kind of strangeness.

Some GUI features have been removed from the latest development build of Google Chrome, with the Mountain View-based search giant indicating that it needs to do additional testing before implementation. Early adopters can now download Google Chrome 5.0.375.17 for Windows and Mac OS X, through the Dev channel, and those already familiar with past version 5 testing releases will notice a few changes. Essentially, Google has decided to remove some features, impacting the UI.

Hey guys I have a weird problem here, my computer reverted it's settings like the day after reformatting it which was 2 weeks ago, don't know why. My installed applications still here but the desktop shortcuts, pinned programs in the taskbar are missing, browsers are still here but the history, cache, add-ons, extensions and every settings for the browsers are deleted, it's like a newly installed one. Also a weird problem with the theme, currently on safe mode (just wanted to go to safe mode), my theme is like Windows XP, don't know that status in normal mode yet. Also before I can get to the desktop, it say's "Welcome" and then after that, this word appeared "Preparing your Desktop". I didn't do anything that will restore the PC to the date of reformatting it.

Edit: I know the reason, my PC did a system recover not restore without my interaction or anyone's interaction, what I did earlier was, plug the cables to the socket, turn on the PC and then selected safe mode (just wanted), while loading files, I went away for a while (don't know what's happening), after coming back, it was on the desktop, noticed shortcuts are missing but files are still there (working), restarted it, noticed that the "Preparing your Desktop" is appearing on the welcome screen. Will do system restore now, and see if every settings, files, etc., is restored, if it works, I need to know what caused my PC to do a system recover without my interaction or anyone's interactio... After I phoned the Microsoft Helpline I pressed F1 and was able to reset time and date and all was well.
However I am puzzled as to what could have changed the date and time as only a few hours before my wife had turned on the computer with no problem, played a few games and then turned it off again.
The computer is only about three months old and I have Windows XP.
Anyone have any ideas?. Thanks Roger

My computer recently reverted to an old login setup/profile without any prompting. The only thing I did was remove the PC from its power source, installed a wireless NIC (netgear G) and powered back up to find old login info from a previous user and password. How do I go back to the one I setup?

I'm sure I'm not including enough key info, please, ask for more and I'll respond asap. Thanks.

A:XP reverted to old login info....how do I go back?

You should start up your computer, and then hit f8 or whichever f key it is for your computer. Then you should start up into safe mode with out networking. Once your computer is all set up you should go to start > control panel > User accounts. Then you can change things in there to the users that were on there.

I believe that is how it works.

Today I installed 6 updates that were released April 7, 2008. However, upon doing so, ALL of my Windows settings were revered to factory: desktop, taskbar, program files, everything. The installed updates were as follows:KB947864 - Cumulative Secutiry Update for IE7 for x64-based SystemsKB948881 - S.U. for ActiveX Killbits for x64-based SystemsKB941693 - S.U. for W.V. for x64-based SystemsKB948590 - S.U. for W.V. for x64-based SystemsKB938371 - Update for W.V. for x64-based SystemsKB890830 - Win. Malicious Software Removal Tool x64Luckily, system restore was able to revert to my pre-update settings, but I have no idea which update(s) caused this issue. If anyone can shed some light on this situation, I'd appreciate it.

Also, I suggest a bit of caution when updating until this situation is resolved, unless you're looking to restore your system to factory.

A:Yesterday's Updates (4/8/08) Reverted to Factory

Didn't see exactly that...but yesterday's updates did not go well for me. I encountered them upon shutting down the computer and it sat with the update message for "2 of 7" for > 14 hours...finally ending within 20 hours.

Afterwards, I see that KB941693 succeeded, KB938371 failed and the rest were ignored. I did all the updates except the MSRT (I mistakenly thought that was the one which failed) from the windows update tool and the updates succeeded.

I have an HP Pavilion laptop that came with Win 8.1 installed. Last year, I upgraded it to Win 10, and the upgrade went smoothly, but the HDMI out didn't work any more. Since I use that a lot, and I couldn't find an easy solution for it, I used the recover feature to revert back to Win 8.1.

I plan to try Win10 again when the new edition comes out in August, but I'm aware of the July 29 deadline to upgrade to Win 10 in order for the upgrade to be free.

Am I correct in assuming that when I upgraded to Win 10 last year, that I'm now permanently registered with Microsoft, and I can wait until August to upgrade to the new version? Or do I have to be running Win10 before July 29 in order for the new version to be free? I don't want to install the thing twice in two weeks if I don't have to.

Thanks for any help.

A:Upgraded to win10, then reverted back. Am I still registered?

You "should" be fine. Can't say 100% now, but your PC should have gotten a digital entitlement for Windows 10, via the free upgrade. Assuming you upgraded and activated. You don't lose the digital entitlement when you do the rollback.

Ok so my laptop's interface for some reason has been changed somehow to the windows classic interface and I'm not able to change it back. Hi,I know this seems like an XP issue but i think i still may be infected as these changes/restrictions were done straight after my symantic detected and deleted the 'trojan.fakeAV' which was file 'bolflphtssd.exe'Basically Symantec deleted the virus and didn't need to reboot. But just to be sure I started in safe mode and ran malwarebytes which came up clean. I then shut-down, restarted again only to find the theme had gone to classic (and un-able to revert back) and the network connection was removed, or constantly in the process of handshaking or syncing with the network.I have ran numerous scans with symantec and mbytes in normal mode and safe mode but they have come clean.Any ideas? Maybe just critical data got deleted as well?I look forward to eharing from you. I loaded windows 10, could not get on with it, so ended up reverting back to windows 7.  Then realised it had corrupted my recovery partition.  Used my Original Windows 7, to re-install. However, I could not find the correct way to install the drivers that were listed on HP Support pages. There was no list of which driver to install first, and I still have Other Devices on control panel, showing a problem with yellow flag.  Is there somewhere that I can find what I want.

Hi there

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire for the business & I was very specific at time of purchase that it must NOT run Vista as the accounting software I run is not compatible with Vista.

All went well for about a month & then the accounting software started to play up. I contacted their tech support people & they talked me through a few fixes however during these fixes we discovered latent COMPATIBILITY FOLDERS on the computer that simply should not be on a machine unless it is running Vista. I contacted the store I bought it from & they admitted that it had originally come with Vista but had been upgraded to run Windows 7 Home Premium prior to purchase. He told me to come in & they would remove the components that had not been removed properly during upgrade.

I was unable to go in that day but told them to expect me within a day or two at the most however before I could get back (the following night in fact) the computer ran some scheduled updates from Microsoft & when I went to use it the next day it was all sorts of wrong! It didn't even look the same (desktop) & files were missing or moved. When I went to online help I kept getting diverted to Vista help rather than Windows 7 help. I contacted the computer store again & they said that the update may have found these compatibility folders & freaked out & reverted the machine back to Vista...???

Anyway, I have lost loads of files that I had not yet backed up as I was planni... Read more

A:After update, laptop reverted FROM Windows 7 TO Vista?????

Hello Skye,

Sorry, but a Windows Update WILL NOT revert a upgraded Windows 7 back to Vista like that.

It sounds a lot more likely that the computer store messed up and did a factory restore from the recovery partition on your computer, and that is what restored Vista since that was on your computer from the factory.

If this is what they did, then that most likely may have also wiped out all data that was previously on your computer for good.

I wouldn't let them get away with trying to cover up their mistake with a BS line about it being caused by a Windows Update.

Hey guys, I hope this is the right section,

I had Grub and Kubuntu, then was done with linux for the time being, so i cleared the partition that it was on, and when i restarted grub was giving an error etc, so all i could find was my vista 64 cd, and after some reading on MS support pages, being that they used the same loader to fix it with that dvd.

So i ran this in the cmd prompt:

bcdedit /export c:\BCD_Backup
attrib bcd -s -h -r
ren c:\boot\bcd bcd.old
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot

and everything was dandy, it fixed the loader.... but put the vista boot screen(the simplistic screen with the loading bar)

so i go access to my windows 7 iso, burned it, and re did the same process (but used the repair option first cuz it asked me and i figured it would be easier) and then ran the same commands to hopefully refresh the loader w/ the possibly newer windows 7 one(mainly for the boot logo)

but its still showing the old vista logo

i know this seems silly but how can i fix it back to the newer windows 7 one?

A:Boot screen reverted to vista after repair

Welcome to the forums ....Try opening a command prompt and enter scannow/sfc ... see if this will help... if not, the simplest way may be a clean install of windows 7....

Hey, I downloaded a custom icon pack which replaces the original ones with Vista. After installing it, I got most of them to work BUT most of the folder icons are reverted back to Vista's default. If I delete the thumbnail cache and refresh my folders, the new icons are shown for about 2 seconds before reverting back to the default.

This only seems to happen if I set the folder display size to Medium/Large/etc, but if I set it to Small I can see the tiny version of the folder's custom icon properly.

Below is an example of one folder using a new icon and the rest reverting to the default:
Anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it? I've tried repairing/restructuring the thumbnail cache, etc, but that doesn't seem to be the problem.

My laptop appears to have defaulted to its factory settings. All of my personal settings have been deleted and while all the programs I had downloaded remain, when opened they act as if I have never before used them. There even appear to be programs that I had previously downloaded and deleted back on my system. I initially thought all my documents, music, pictures, etc. had been deleted, but it seems a new user folder called TEMP was created and has become the default rather than the user folder I had previously been using.

My wife's laptop auto updated to Windows 10 last week and everything had been working perfectly until yesterday. Suddenly her desktop/start menu reverted from the new Windows 10 start menu to the old Windows 8.1 desktop. I did some searching and supposedly if you go through control panel, appearance, taskbar and start menu properties there should be a start menu tab where you select which one you want. That tab doesn't exist on her machine or mine for that matter. I also verify that notebook mode was turned off.

How can I get her desktop/start menu back to the standard Windows 10 style?

A:Desktop/Start Menu reverted to Windows 8 style?

Right-click the desktop and select personalize. Then select the default Windows 10 theme.

Hi. I seem to have got a virus. Any program I use seems to have reverted back to it's default seetings. In photoshop CS2 I lost all the colour settings. When I try to restore the previous settings I now only have a choice of 4. Before there was about 30. I scanned with XoftSpySE and it found Deskbar.exe and secondthought. I have this file secondthought now for several weeks. It always shows up on XoftSpySE. Every time I remove t but it always comes back when I restart my Computer. Do I need to re-install Photoshop to get my colour settings. Do I still have spyware on the computer. Below is the Hijack Logfile.

When going to google.co.uk or google.com with WINXP in IE8 or Chrome I get an old copy of the google page with the black bar across the top. The search results are shown differently also. The page address starts with http://www.google.co.uk/cse?rlz= (custom search?) and there are some options missing . It only shows web and image, no search tools etc. Also the output is shifted to the left margin and the "go to next page" bit is missing the arrows for next. With firefox, it is all OK. Bing has stopped working completely in Chrome & IE. The picture is missing and none of the search actions do anything. MSN takes me to the NL page rather than the EN-GB one. It reverts to this after I reset it. Outlook.com takes me to my emails OK. It still works OK in Firefox. How do I get IE and Chrome back the way they were please?I have cleared cache & cookies and that makes no difference.Chrome is Version 38.0.2125.122 m. Google Chrome is up to date.IE is V8 - the latest that will run on WINXP.Firefox (which works OK) is 33.1I have tried disabling addons & extensions - still the same. All of this used to work OK. It just stopped and I cannot identify the reason.

I have recently been cleaning up my computer and removed some older versions of Microsoft. I have Windows XP, and I'm using MS Office 2007. I am still using Outlook Express for email. All of a sudden in the email, my spell check defaults to checking with a French dictionary. When I found a drop down menu for language, only French was shown as an option. Can someone guide me to the location to change the default language to English? Many thanks.

Did this happen right after you installed Office 2007?

Instead the attachement sizer window just closes and I'm back to my desktop. I tried setting the defaults in Windows Mail but that didn't seem to help. Any ideas? Thanks.

1. In Vista... click "Start" (the orb with the flag, bottom left of your screen.

2. Click "Default Programs"

3. Click "Set your default programs"

4. Click "Windows Mail"

5. Click "Set this program as default

Now you should be able to right click your picture, click send and it will now open Windows Mail for you.

Hi, well first of all the reason I changed it was because I tried to optimize (my mistake) by reducing it. My router is set to 1365 MTU manually after a support tech from Linksys asked me to change it for a previous problem. I used the "netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Wireless Network connection" mtu=nnnn store=persistent" command to change it around to find what MTU Windows uses automatically. It was set at 1500 (for both LAN and WLAN). I set the WLAN to 1365 to see how it would perform, didn't see a noticable change I believe so I switched back. Now I see a slight lag when loading sites. I also compared the time against another pc that I did not tamper with (which by default was set to 1500) and that one worked normally.

I fear I may have overridden Windows defaults for handling MTU since after manually setting it to 1500 (was originally 1500 when it was untouched) it lags a little. For the time being I set it to 1365 to get the performance that I normally got with default settings.

My question is if it's possible to get the original performance back with the MTU set back to what it was originally (1500)?

Also I learned my lesson and won't be trying to change settings without first making sure they are completely reversible. Also I'd like to do this without using System Restore.

Thanks in advance.

I made the mistake of upgrading Windows 7 to Windows 10 on my Dell XPS 702X laptop before reading that Dell does NOT intend to upgrade drivers to support the laptop on the newer OS. I reverted back to 10 due to the fans running all the time and the laptop was always running hot.

The reversal process appeared to go fine without errors, but almost every day since August the system will suddenly stop and reboot. It always hangs on the welcome screen. After looking up the issue on various forums, I found that a temp fix that sometimes helps is to turn off the wireless lan card during hard shutdown and restart, or sometimes booting to safe mode with a command prompt and running chkdsk /f.

It did it again today, and I started digging deeper. I have turned off the automatic restart in properties and now it should BSOD me with a more specific error. The error log indicates a LONG list of the same error. I'm not savvy enough to begin to understand this! Thanks in advance:

System: Vista Home Premium 32 / Sony Vaio Computer / (6) acomdata external hard disc drives - USB 2.0 connectors.

Six months ago I converted all of the Ext HDs from fat32 to NTFS, using the windows utility, in order to store multi gb files. Today, I attempted to store a 6.5gb single file on one of the hard disks and received an insufficient space notice. When I checked Computer - Drive - Properties, I found that my format had changed back to Fat 32. I then checked "format.." on the right click menu and found that the file system of the drive was still listed as NTFS (Default). And there was an option to "restore defaults". Will this option restore the NTSF in properties without deleting content from the drive?

I assume that, regardless, of what properties indicates it still must have the NTSF directories because there are several single files of over 5gb on the drive.

Three of the other drives have the same issue. Sorry, if this is a newbie problem, but your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I use keepass on my laptop. I store all my username/passwords for everything on it. Today i noticed when i started keepass... i noticed I could not log into several of my accounts. I had wondered why. Until i took a look and many username/passwords for certain sites are not shown in it. I then looked and see many of my username/passwords... all of these got reverted back to early last year. Not long ago i had changed my passwords for many sites and added other sites and passwords.

So many of my email accounts, i could not log into it because the password thats in the keepass that i copy and paste now... well its the wrong password b/c i had these pw's changed. It wasn't that long ago but it wasn't that recent. I did however have a piece of paper that i wrote many of my username/passwords down in case. However, i didn't do this for every single site.

Does anyone know what happened here and how did this happen? I always used an old version of keepass and everytime keepass starts, it ask if i want to upgrade and i always clicked no. Im not sure but i think there is a small chance i could have clicked yes this time though i dont think this happened.

Can someone tell me how in the world did this happen to my keepass? I also noticed i had 2 keepass. I have one that says keepass1 and keepass2. Keepass2 was the new one where i made changes to it. Does that mean the only way this happened was i opened keepass1... then saved it and overrode keepass2?

Up until a few days ago I could view thumbnails/icons of actual PDF files while in Windows Explorer. Now I only get the Adobe logo icon. Other file thumbnails are working.

I tried a system restore back to before this started but it didn't correct the problem. Prior to that I tried changing the file association to another program and back again but that didn't work either. Any other ideas?

Windows 7 spoiled me-- I really liked being able to see what the file looked like before I had to go opening several to find the one I want. (When I'm creating document graphic designs I usually make three or four different trial versions which can get confusing when I am away from my work for a day or two!)

I tried Googling the problem and found some discussions on other forums but still haven't found a satisfactory solution.

Just last week I'd gotten my iPhone & updated the iTunes to the new iTunes 10. But just a few days ago I turned on the computer and it had a blank screen for a while so i turned it off then on again. It told me it didn't shut down properly so instead of starting it normally I chose the other option of, well, I don't even remember. Then it asked if I wanted to reboot or something like that & make the laptop go back to the previous condition in which it was better, which, unfortunately was before I'd updated the iTunes. So now whenever i try to open it, the message "The file "iTunes Library.itl" cannot be read because it was created by a new version of iTunes". I even tried downloading the new iTunes hoping it could pick up all my hopefully-not-lost music but in the process of installing it, it "could not access network location %APPDATA%\" and it requires QuickTime, which it looks like i have.
My parents have no idea about this & they will kill me if I've ruined my iTunes and, i may know my iPhone but I sure cannot figure out my own laptop

I've been offered the same 14 updates over and over. They fail to configure after reboot and are reverted. In the attached picture all show 800F0826 except for the one marked (that one is 80070005). I suspect permissions on the registry or filesystem are to blame.

I removed IE11 from my features a year ago when IE11 updates started to fail. I tried to add IE11 back,. but the updates still failed. I also tried turning IIS off in add remove features, but those got reverted.

Cleaned out Catroot2, CBS and WindowsUpdate.log in repair boot shell to get logs as clean and empty as possible. Not sure if that was a bad idea, but I got frustrated.
Reattempted update
Ran SubInACL* to grant access to the Adminstrators to registry and file system. Those logs are huge (3 GB plus and I don't have tools to parse them, plus I don't know where failure to set permissions are to be expected.
I ran latest SURT and got a clean CheckSUR log
SFC /scannow found no issues.

Screenshot from disk management(from former RAID1):

This is what happened>

I had RAID 1 running on Intel Matrix Storage,(Win 7 Pro x86)
then the software failed first with one then with the another disk.

I use ASUS P7P55D PRO Motherboard where I had two
WD Green 1 TB in RAID 1 (Model> WD10EADS-00L5B1)
running.

After failure disks were checked with Linux, and they were healthy and no data lost.

So far so good, I made a backup of the files and now try to boot, but boot fails right after windows 7 logo animation, it shows blue screen. I tried to fix issue with Windows RE (The automatic repair). No help with that.

I'm not familiar with cmd repairing from the installation DVD nor from Hiren's Boot CD 10.1.

I'm thinking the problem could be with the partitioning, but I've got no idea how. Both disks have two partitions:
1:System reserved (105MB or so) NTFS > Partition Type: HPFS\NTFS (0x07)
2ata 1TB NTFS > Partition Type: HPFS\NTFS (0x07)

Advice appreciated

#EDIT# Advice for everyone, don't use software raid for OS buy a NAS instead, and install OS to SSD or other disk and leave the RAID for Hardware based solution. It'll save you a lot of time.

A:Advanced Boot problem with disk reverted from RAID 1 (Files are ok)

Hi Tonza,

Ouch : another RAID problem....we see lots of these here.

I'm not sure that you can boot from either one of those disks without formatting & installing again. I assume you reverted to IDE or AHCI controller in the BIOS, when you tried to boot from one of the single disks?

I am not sure how to begin to describe my problem, so I will recount my experience in chronological order and describe the problem as I go. I have provided a couple of images for reference as well.

Last night, I only had one hard disk in my computer, a Seagate. It is Disk 0 in the Disk Management screenshot below. I installed two more hard disks (both Western Digital), converted them to dynamic, striped them, and created a volume (G. I moved some data to the new G: volume. If it's relevant, then it may help you to know that one of them already had a Windows installation of its own. Reformatting it should have deleted all that information, though. Then I went to bed.

When I woke up, my computer had restarted because Windows had automatically updated. This is where things start to go wrong. My computer was stuck at boot-up on a blank screen with a flashing underscore. I restarted a couple of times, and Windows would try to boot but fail and stop at the same screen. I went into the BIOS, and while I could manually select my Seagate from a boot list, it was not showing up in my BIOS' boot order settings. I removed every other device from the boot order, and my computer will now boot normally. So, I have actually resolved this issue but am telling you about it in case it may be relevant to my current problem.

Afterward, I noticed that my G: volume was not appearing in Explorer. I checked Disk Management and discovered that one of my disks has failed (screenshot below). He... Read more

A:Striped dynamic disk failure: one missing, one reverted to basic(?)

Two questions to start:

1: Why is Windows set to update automatically?

2: Why are you using dynamic disks at all?

Hi. I bought Windows 7 64bit home edition on a disk with my new Novatech pc over a year ago, and it successfully activated. Until 30 days ago it ran fine. Then the Windows not genuine pop got going with a link for activating online. I used slmgr /dlv which showed that the computer thinks my Windows is in its 'grace period', on a countdown from 30 days to 0 (tomorrow!).

Any suggestion, anyone? Here's what did NOT work:

Online activation (nothing happens)

Phone activation

Microsoft support - phoned them.
They talked me through a few things that did not work, then gave up.

I purchased a Dell Inspiron 2330 from a pawn shop - previous owner installed win 7 Ultimate 64-bit (replacing win 8). I got the activation code and downloaded a good copy of win 7 Ult 64-bit (from MS site) to do a fresh install to delete all his stuff !! Big mistake Cannot connect to internet. Multiple drivers out. Found a LAN driver to correct Ethernet driver but still unable to connect. Not very good at OS level diags (more of a "know just enough to be dangerous" type) Any help is appreciated. Have a laptop connected so can download and load via stick. I entered as much info as I could garner in the "System Specs" page of my profile. Thanks.

I finally get it to come up up and it says: DQS TRAINING FAILED ON PREVIOUS BOOT REVERTED TO SLOWER DRAM SPEED. I keep getting this. If I leave my computer on and not shutdown it is fine. Only when I restart I get message??? I have not changed any software or hardware, or memory. I ran memtest and it said memory was good.

I think this may have come up before but cant find the answer I'm looking for. I get this message every single time I start my puter up. After many searches I found lots of threads but always got bogged down in pc jargon. I dont mind if I dont know why ram speed is set at a certain speed, but the thing thats bugging me is that I never got this message for 8 months after building this pc and now I get it every boot. What sort of things would cause this to happen all of a sudden? I'm just wondering if my hardware I spent good money on isn't working at well/fast as it could be. If its a case of setting the ram speed lower, why now and not from day one?

Hope someone can shed some light

Hello, everyone.

I was playing Diablo 2 today and my Internet Explorer 6 icon on my desktop (icon available in desktop settings, not a shortcut) seems to have reverted to something from Internet Explorer 4 or earlier.

I've tried re-applying the Windows XP theme (this worked for me on the original Diablo on my old PC when the start button did something similar) but no luck. I'm good at computing (e.g. I can edit the registry easily, follow instructions, I know quite a lot about XP) but I've never had a problem like this before. I'm gonna have to ask for help on this one.

Screenshot.

Any help would be excellent thanks. Also, I've had a similar problem on another computer when after installing IE7 the icon disappeared and went to the default XP "white-page" icon. It needed a registry edit to fix it; are they fixed in a similar fashion?

Thanks.

A:Solved: Internet Explorer 6 Icon "Reverted"

Doctor_Pepper, Right click your Desktop, choose Properties, under the Settings tab change the "Color Quality" from 32 bit to 16 bit, restart your computer then change it back to 32 bit. If this doesn't correct the problem download Tweak UI at the link below. After you install it you'll find it in Start>Programs>Powertoys for Windows XP>Tweak UI. Open it and under Repair then choose Rebuild Icons.

UPDATE: I went into themes and everything is greyed out except the basic old themes. I tried find and fix problems for aero themes display but it didn't come up with anything... when looking through google I see things about updating registry entries but I'm not sure I should be doing that based on google suggestions with my luck.

Windows did an update and now my system looks like its running an older version of windows...see attached picture. If I do a system restore to before the update I can get it running like it should again, but there should be a way to fix this without the restore, I just can't figure it out. Any ideas

I'm also getting errors about not being able to log into the windows system to check for updates when I start the computer, not sure if this has anything to do with it.

This has happened on two consecutive days:
On closing Windows, I am told that 1 of 126 updates is downloading. My PC shuts off but, as the download begins in late evening, I don't know if the shut-off occurs after all items have downloaded. When I turn on the PC next morning, I am told Windows is installing updates and reconfiguring; after the latter has reached 13%, a "failure" is indicated, Windows begins "reverting" the changes and eventually reboots to the normal opening screen. I have seen no error codes.
How can I stop this irritation?

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

My Windows 7 has been rock solid until Saturday. It's been so good I've lost all my trouble shooting chops. Now, almost none of my windows programs will work.

Saturday, Windows Update pushed about 33MB of updates to my system. After rebooting to configure the updates and start Windows it gave me an error to the effect of: "Update Failure, reverting changes. Do not turn your computer off." It rebooted several times with the same message and finally hung on the "Shutting Down" screen. When I say hung, I left it on when I went to bed about midnight and it was still in the same place when I looked at it the next morning around 10. Naturally, I just unplugged it and restarted it. To my surprise, it advised me that all the updates had been successful and booted up. Unfortunately, only a few of my programs will load and work. I can get into Control Panel and a few of the applets that's about all. I backed out all of the Saturday updates to see if it would work as before but no joy. The programs I try to run get loaded into memory, I can see them in the Task Manager Process window but nothing else happens.

Today, I backed out all the updates one by one to see if that would restore some functionality but no joy. I have no idea what is going wrong, Event Viewer doesn't seem to tell me anything useful that I recognize. Anyone have any suggestions besides tearing it down and starting over?

My machine typically is powered off when I am not using it. The morning before the last day of the free download my computer reverted itself back to windows XP. I have no idea how it happened. It is asking me to activate my version of Wndows XP. I never had windows XP on that machine. It was purchased with Windows 7 professional.

Hello all,

I usually had my Gateway NV53A (AMD Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series Graphics card) connected and I never had a problem. Recently I connected my Samsung to the monitor and again, had no problems. When I reconnect my gateway the PC detects the monitor but the monitor does not detect the PC. If I switch back to the Samsung it works fine. I have reset the TV to factory default the only way I know how (owners manual). I have unplugged the power cable to the TV for 10 min+. I have changed from a 14 pin VGA to a 15 pin. I have updated all drivers.

PLEASE HELP ME!!!

Could it be that the TV has a capacitor that holds the settings for an extended period of time? Maybe I should leave it unplugged for 24-48 hours?

It is an Analog VGA.  The manufacture date was 2014..  It was purchased closer to 2015.  There is a dark shadow on the bottom right hand corner of the screen  It is about 1 inch high.  It extends about 2-3 inches across the bottom (Where time/date is).  Looking at the shadow it has a specific and static shape almost like a graph going UP (Up hill); you know the line on the graph from x-y?  It is a  giant blob, a shadow but does have a specific shape impacting only the bottom right.  The monitor was not placed near magnets, moved, hit, dropped or struck in any manner.  It is highly unlikely it was moved without my knowledge.  It was working amazing since the day I got it.  OVERNIGHT near a windows 10 update this shadow problem happened.I unplugged it and moved it around a bit.  I noticed tapping the bottom right (where the shadow is) does make it go away for 10-30 seconds.  So touching that area in the back (not the controls) somehow fixes the problem.  I do not know if this helps but the shadow is translucent (more grey than solid black)

I have a dell laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution. However, i connect it to an external monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution. Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen which is the secondary monitor.

My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

Hi.

I recently got a monitor from one of my friends saying that it was broken. Its a Dell 19in LCD. I have my main monitor a 22in Samsung wide screen So i just plugged it into the second DVI slot on my graphics Card. When i went into the display config i set up dual monitors just to see if it was working. The dell monitor would blink up then quit on me.

When i was messing with the Display settings I made the Dell. Not my Samsung the Default Monitor. I unpluged the broken Dell and restarted. Now my computer regognizes the Samsung as the second monitor and it just shuts it off and recognizes nothing as the main.

I managed to get it into safe mode and it recognized the samsung but every time i try go back to Normal Start the screen is blank.

How can i get it to recognize the Samsung as my main?

Question: How can I reactivate my monitor without reformatting the hard drive?
This is what happened:
Two monitors were hooked to my computer, (Dell Inspiration), and I had to reduce it into one monitor.

I opened: screen resolution
Clicked on: Advanced settings
Clicked on: Monitor
Clicked on: Driver
Clicked on: Disable

After I did that, one monitor became completely dark, and the second monitor display was if it would run in safe mode, (graphic quality was so bad, it hurt to my eyes to watch it). I checked the device list and both monitor was removed from the list, there were no monitor listed anymore (before they were there).
I tried the system restore, but after the system restore finished, there were no more connection with the monitor.
When I start the computer, the monitor works for few seconds, shows the start up process, and right after the windows logo displayed, it shuts off. I tried to reboot in "safe mode", and it starts up as usual, (the monitor works), but before it reaches the desktop screen, it shuts off.
Windows version is: Windows 7
Computer: DELL Inspiration 546s
Operating System: 64-bit
Processor: AMD

Thank you in advance for your help

A:[SOLVED] windows 7 - monitor driver disabled - monitor does not work

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking, go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc, Right click the devmgmt results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Device Manager, are there any devices with a Red or Yellow flags next to them? If It is Red (Disabled) then right click it and Enable it.
If it is a Yellow Exclamation mark, then you need to download the video driver for your model. First try Right clicking the yellow mark and then Uninstall. Then Right click any device and choose Scan For Hardware Changes, this should reinstall the previous Video Driver, then restart the computer in normal mode.
If that doesn't work, Go to the Dell Support/Download drivers site Product Support | Dell US type in your service tag # or make and model# and download the Video driver for your model.

About 6 months ago i invested in a second video card to use with an old monitor and a new PC. After much trial and error i eventually got it all working.

A couple of days ago i re-installed windows however and therefore all my settings have been reset and am now havein problems, and if i remember rightly the same ones as before. But for the life of me i cant figure out how to solve them this time round. So any help would be appreciated.

Spec -

2x plug and play monitor (almost sure it has nothing to do with these so wont add details)

1x Nvidia Geforce FX 5200 (AGP) with fully updated drivers (from manufacturers website) (the monitor off this video card works fine)

1x ATI Radeon 7000 (PCI) fully updated drivers (without catylist command centre however due to some installation problems. I had these before when both monitors worked fine..just the drivers) - Problematic monitor

Bios - Dell Computer Corporation A12 (newly updated) (I heard somewhere that this may have an effect).

The Problem-
On my second monitor (Radeon 7000 (PCI) whenever i try to move a frame, scroll in IE etc the refresh rate is appaling. Entire lines get moved at a time.
The only time the refersh rate does not slow is when moving the mouse and scrolling through files in c drive as far as i can tell. If i switch my primary monitor to this one and stop the monitor 'extension' it still flickers. Ive checked my monitors by changing which card they use and as expected, th... Read more

A:Dual monitor problems- second monitor refresh times dreadful

Well, could be bad drivers... nvidia and ATI hate eachother, so I dunno why you got cards like that, could be a driver conflict from un-updated windows files, that is to say, uninstall drivers, update everything on windows, re-install newest drivers.

My old dell laptop L502x is a bit quirky and caused me to buy a desktop, however, i think it is still saveable. when i have it display to an external monitor via hdmi, it works 100% with no problems. however, when i use the monitor that is physically attached to the laptop, i will get a " A clock interrupt was not received on a secondary processor" BSOD. from what i've gathered over numerous crashes, i believe its a problem with the integrated graphics in the processor, since they are not used when outputting via hdmi. i could be wrong tho, any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Dell Laptop external monitor = OK, attached monitor = BSOD

Before posting a BSOD thread, please read the instructions here: Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions

I've been running a multi-monitor setup for a while now, with an ASUS VG248QE 144Hz monitor as my main, and one or more spare monitors as secondary displays. I've set the ASUS monitor to 144Hz without issue in the past, while the other monitors stay at 60Hz.

The other night, Windows wanted to update. I figured it was the usual patch session, so I let it do its thing. However, after restarting my computer, I noticed that my ASUS monitor would only operate at 144Hz if it was the only monitor plugged into the system. When I try to set it higher in the Nvidia control panel, it just reverts back to 60Hz after applying changes. I updated my graphics drivers (though I was only one version behind) and even sought a special ASUS driver for the monitor to resolve the issue, but nothing has helped.

Did Windows recently add a forced refresh rate sync between all monitors recently? If so, that really sucks because I only own one 144Hz monitor.

A:Dual monitor setup locks 144Hz monitor at 60Hz

Are you sure the other monitors are independent (dual or multiple mode) rather than cloning the main monitor? If they clone the main monitor, then this explains the 60Hz refresh rate, as all settings (resolution, color depth, refresh rate) should be common for all monitors and the others can only do 60Hz.

Windows 10 laptop. I connect it to an external monitor and use hdmi cable. My external monitor is my main monitor. I use the laptop monitor as the secondary monitor. I extend the display.

My desktop icons are always on my external monitor desktop. I had moved the hdmi cable connected to my laptop i believe which caused all my icons from my external monitor to go on the laptop monitor. Also there is even spacing on all of the icons. Has anyone had this happened? I then clicked sort and then it rearranged so there is no spacing etc. However, i then noticed hey why are my icons on my laptop monitor and not my external monitor.

Does anyone know why this happened? When i open chrome and other programs, it does open up on my external monitor though which is my primary monitor. I believe i can just drag each of the icons on my desktop on my laptop screen to my external monitor. So just do this and that fixes the issue right? Or is there a way to have all the icons just move to the external monitor. The reason i ask this is in case the icons just suddenly move to the laptop screen again.

Running dual monitors in Win 10 and when going through the Color calibration steps on monitor #2 (Control panel / Display / Calibrate color) the settings stick as long as the 2nd monitor is active.

If I switch to single display (Windows Key + P / PC Screen only) then the 2nd monitor loses its color calibration. Also anytime I reboot my PC (Even if I have both monitors active) the 2nd monitor loses my calibration.

The 2nd monitor has a fairly strong bias for the color Green so I can always tell right away.

I'm probably overlooking something and was hoping someone might of dealt with this before

Hello I basically need conformation that I'll need to buy a new monitor in order to have a dual monitor set up with my current system. I'm not super tech savvy so if you need any other info please let me know.

I have a Radeon HD 6670 with 3 ports, an HMID, VGA (which is my monitors type) and DVI. Each port has a stamp next to it that indicates what port type it is/supports (the VGA has a CRI stamp next to it though). My main VGA monitor works fine with the VGA/CRI port, but my second I have to use a VGA to DVI adapter and it's not working.

I've gone through a lot of forums, and found some conflicting information. So I really want to know is it possible to use a converter/adapter or will I need to just go out and buy a new monitor that has a DVI hook up?

I hope I don't need a new monitor, I'm on a very tight budget. (la sigh)

A:Radeon HD 6670 Dual Monitor setup not detecting 2nd monitor

I would try one of these before giving up on the monitor:

Rosewill 10ft. DVI-A (24+5) Male to HD15 VGA Male Analog Video Cable w/ Ferrites Cores, Model RCW-900 - Newegg.com

Forget adapters, you might not a have a compatible one, the DVI connector has many variants.

Look at that cable end and make sure it would fit on your video card's female DVI connector (it should), it's DVI-A (analog only) to VGA which is analog only....

Sorry for the long text, I'm trying to send as much information i have.

Hello forums!
A few years ago i built a new gaming pc because i wanted to be able to play high quality games. But since day 1 i've had nothing but problems. Whenever i play one of my high quality games such as "Assassins Creed, Tomb Raider, Battlefield 3 or Primal Carnage" the monitor goes completely blank showing a "no signal to monitor" sign after gaming for between 5 minutes to up to 2-3 hours. The monitor sometimes also shows different color stripes either for examples: orange, pink or grey. The sound of my friends on skype usually keeps going for about 20 seconds before going silent, the sound of the game shuts off instantly or goes in a loop or starts with a loud buzzing sound. The fans and the LED's on my pc are still going but i can't control anything on the pc making me have to force restart my pc on the power button.
I've been on this forum before talking to this guy who is helping me but he's been quite busy lately so i need some extra help.
I've updated all drivers to latest, i never overheat, the GPU does not go over 51C when gaming and CPU never goes over 51C either.
I've upgraded my 650W powersupply to a 850W power supply and is one of the highest rated best performance power supplies you can find.
I tried to RMA my graphics card but they found nothing wrong with it and sent it back.
I bought two new sticks of RAM 4GB each, still... Read more
