XP lockup saving large Excel files across network

Q: XP lockup saving large Excel files across network

I posted this in the Business Applications, but someone there suggested I post it here since it seems to be more of a networking issue:

I've got a PC on my network running Windows XP Pro and Office XP. When attempting to save extremely large Excel files (one is 13MB and the other is 72MB - they're full of [email protected]$#@ charts) to a network folder, Excel locks up. Additionally, when the user opens these files, it's common for Excel to report it's repairing the file. Saving to the local hard drive works fine.

This mess seemed to start after we upgraded our NT4 file server to Windows Server 2003. The Windows Server 2003 was set up by a MSCE, which I am not. I'm self taught, and this is my first exposure to server operating systems beyond NT4. The server is configured to be a DNS and PDC, as well as Active Directory. It's the only Windows server we have.

The workstation Event Log records the follow entries on boot up:

I assume the problems are related, but I'm not sure how or why. Saving non-Excel files seems to work ok, although nothing else approaches these two spreadsheets in file size. Saving Excel files smaller than 2MB seems to work fine. I haven't tried any files between 2MB and 13MB to see if/when I can hit a file size where the lockups start. The XP machine is configured to use the server as it's primary DNS.

The XP Pro machine is a P4-1.8 with 512MB and a 40GB hard drive that's no where near capacity. The server is running Dual P3-500's, has 256MB of RAM, and a 4 drive IDE-RAID array configured to 2 18GB striped/mirrored drives. Those are partitioned with the OS on a 2GB C: partition and data stored on the 16GB D: partition. The systems are connected via 10mbit Cat3 (the building's wiring is old and inaccessable, and wireless is unreliable due to the building's construction).

Just installed Win7 64 Home Pro from XP two days ago.
The last remaining issue I need to solve is a drag and drop file transfer to my other home network computer (HNC).

So far I've been able to d&d files from the HNC via Acronis WD in it's explorer mode without any issues, some sized in the multi Gb range. I've been also able to d&d small files directly to the HNC successfully.

When I try to d&d a large file, specifically my NVIDIA drivers sized at 123Mb the Win7 computer freezes immediately. The cursor is stuck and the computer is absolutely locked, the only thing that works to recover it is the power off button.
When I come back I don't get any indication of anything going wrong and if I look on the HNC drive the file has been transferred successfully!

I haven't tried copying files to the HNC via Acronis WD yet so I don't know if it will be able to write to it.

The HNC computer has not caused any issues in the past with XP, it's running Ubuntu Linux.

Thanks for anyone's input.

A:Home Network Large File Transfer Lockup

As a suggestion, test what happens when you attempt the drag 'n' drop operation in [safe mode + net].

The most likely problem causes are a bad anti-virus filter driver, or a NIC driver which needs updating.

Does anyone know of a way to save a large file across two disks. The file is just over 100mb so I cant use just one zip disk and will have to use two. It is already highly compressed as well. Thanks in advance!

phisycal plus my video card has 128mb of ram and I noticed that at times my computer uses part of the hard drive at times in swap files.the question is Do I need more ram?

A:How much ram do I need for large files in excel

You shouldn't need more RAM particularly as you can set aside more disc space for the computer to work with. If you find it really slow upadting the data in your Workbook then it would suggest that you could do with some more.
I only have the same RAM as you and I have had 2 or 3 Eight Meg Excel workbooks open at the same time as well as working on this forum.

Hi,
I am running Windows Vista and Excel from Office 2000. I have previously had no issues creating, editing and saving Excel files. I have recently started sharing files from my desktop which is running Windows Vista and Office 2007. However, the files that I am having issues with saving were initially created on the laptop where the issues are occuring. I can open the shared Excel files with no problem and make changes. When I save the files however, I get this message, "Your changes could not be saved to 'file name.xls but were saved to a temporary document named 'D6C73000'. Close the existing document, then open the temporary document and save it under a new name." I can open, edit and save changes made to Word documents in the same shared folder structure. Can anyone please explain why this is happening and what I can do to stop it?
Thanks,
Ophelia

I've been having problems with the print/print preview function in excel 07, but only for a specific file. It takes an EXTREMELY long time to print. The exact same file in '03 is perfectly fine. It's fairly large (22 mb), but when i started to delete images, I got the size down to 12mb and it did not help. If i copy and paste the ENTIRE spreadsheet (excluding images) into a blank sheet, it ends up being less than a megabyte, and prints fine. Is it possible that the size of the document is simply the reason for the problem, or can something be done to print a document of that size quicker. The main reason i doubt that is the problem, is cause it print FINE in '03. Any Ideas??

All I can imagine is that possibly you have two folders with the same name in two locations that appear to be the same (on my Vista PC at home, I have a Desktop and then and another folder caller Desktop within My Documents or somewhere - it is a real pain....)
So, when you are looking in one place you really aren't where you want to be....

Hi!

I keep getting a message like this when I try to download Excel files without saving first:

C:\DOCUME~1\LINDAJ~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\LeadDetailExport_2010_6_28-2.xls could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred.

Try saving to disk first and then opening the file.

The Windows Installer window opens and says it's preparing to install but then I get the error message. I downloaded the latest Windows Installer from Microsoft but that didn't fix anything. If somebody could please help me with this, I'd really appreciate it.

Two users's computer are re-installed from Win XP to Windows 7x64 sp1 last month. When they were saving Excel 2007 on network drive, it would save long time. Then found that lose connection with network drive. Finally, needed to force restart computer
lastly. It happens occassionly.

Other users won't have these problem. Then I find that these two users are using the same motherboard Gigabyte GA-G41M-Combo with embedded Atheros AR8151 PCI-E Gigabit Etherent Controller.  The lan card Driver version is 2.0.15.16   (25/4/2012)
which is the latest one from the motherboard Gigabyte official site.

These two users are mainly using Excel. So almost happen once a week that can't save file and lose all unsaved data now.

Is it related to lan card ? or Do we need to buy new LAN Card to solve this?  Please comment. Thanks.

I have a problem in saving an excel file on to another pc in the network, which has windows xp. But before I used in both pc?s windows xp & that time there were no problem saving on to the other pc.
Now I use windows 7 32bit (Service pack1) in my pc & other pc on network is windows xp. Im doing some thing on Microsoft Excel 2007 (password protected file) in windows7 pc & when I saving to windows xp pc, most of the time saving bar displayed & say document not saved. But that time some TMP file will be saved in windows xp pc.
Im opening the excel file from network windows xp pc & im doing the amendments from windows7 pc & saving back to winxp pc.
Original file is at winxp pc. Im opening it from win7 pc.
I have changed the below settings also in the win7 pc. But only some times this problem occurs. Some times I can save smoothly.
I wanted to know why this problem comes only some times.
I must say when I using in both pc?s winxp OS nothing happened.
I changed the settings in win7 pc as below,
*Network discovery ? off
*Enable file sharing for devices that use 40 or 56 bit encryption
Please give me a help how to solve this saving issue.

A:Excel file saving problem in the network

First of all, you're going to want Network Discovery turned on if you're sharing files on the network.

Is this only one file, only on excel, or is this a random problem saving ANY files on the network.

Please make sure each computer has full permissions over the file you are trying to edit.

Hello, I have a very rare issue here.

I'm trying to convert a normal xlsx file into a csv file.

In the xlsx file there are normal columns and rows, nothing strange, nor formatting or something pretty, only colums and rows with products plain information.

I've received these files via email, I've downloaded them and when I open them they open in protected mode, or view-only mode.

Each files have thousands of rows, let's say 3000 to 5000 rows.

When I click on "enable editing" button, the processor starts working at 99% it takes stays one minute frozen, and starts overheathing untill it reaches the temperature of emergency shutdown.

The problem is not the processor itself, I've made maintenance to the computer recently, removed all the dust, I've changed the cooling creme, I've played heavy video games for weeks with no problem and none of them make the processor reach more than 50?C (Excel exceeds the max temperature of 61?C).

My processor is a six core AMD FX6100, I have 8B of RAM DDR3 and the file is stored in a 160GB SATA hard drive.

Any advice? I won't be able to work with this important files unless this is fixed. Thank you

A:Excel 2013 - Processor overheats when processing large files

Would it be possible to do the conversion in smaller batches, rather than trying the whole lot at once.

I see you are using Windows 8, so it might be worthwhile posting on the Windows 8 Forum as well.

Here's a weird one: a user opens Excel 2000, and then opens multiple files to work on. When she tries to save any file other than the first one she opened, Excel bounces her back to the first file. This happens whether she uses the save icon or "Save As" under the File menu.

In other words, let say she opens file A and then opens file B. She works on file B for a while and wants to save her changes. When she tries to save it, Excel bounces her over to file A as if she had toggled to it herself. It won't let her save any file other than file A.

If she closes file A and then opens file C (with file B still open), the same thing happens when she tries to save file C. That is, Excel bounces her back to file B. It's as if Excel won't let her save any file other than the earliest one she opened.

Anybody seen this before?

Either export it to word or open word and import the file, then when you save it save it in the works format.

I have a question about using macros in Excel 2010. I am creating an invoice template. I would like to use a macro "button" to increment an invoice number in a specific format (100-1000, 100-1001, etc). I would like the same macro to save the file under the invoice number (cell AB2) as the specific file name. However, I would like the file to be saved into a specific and individual folder based on the name of the customer name entered into the text dialogue box (TextBox 1 in the name box bar) I have created. For example, 100-1001 (file) in John Doe's Store (folder) in Customer Invoices (Folder on the Desktop). I would like to keep a blank copy of each template in each customer folder so that I can search for the customer name, open the blank template, enter the necessary info, and save the new worksheet within the file. This is because each individual customer may not receive the exact same rate of payment and I can easily update that information within the formulas of the worksheet if necessary. I have visited a multitude of pages trying to emulate the formulas to no avail. Can this be easily done or is it something that I would need to hire out an IT contractor for? Thank you in advance!

I am running Excel 2007 and have been working on files and ONLY saving them to my USB memory stick.
On connecting the device to my PC (using an extension USB cord) I noticed a very brief minute blue like spark, and didn'y release until I tried to access my files that the entire content was wiped.
Excel cannot open the file 'LostFile_XLSX_608879.xlsx' because the file format or file extension is not valid. Verify that the file has not been corrupted and that the file extension matches the format of the file.
Well I think it looks fine to me, and I endeavoureed to use the Open & Repair when openng the file too, with no luck.

Will try repair of Excel, don't believe that would solve anything since it does save to the C: drive fine.

A:Excel - Disk Full error when saving to network drive

It could be a network permission issue. I had a similar situation at work here that was caused by network permissions. For some reason we could not create new files on the network but we could copy files to the network. Try opening the network location and right clicking and selecting "NEW" and then try to create a new text or office file.

So, I have an interesting issue that I cannot solve.

I have a Microsoft Excel 2010 file created by User A. User A has full permissions to the file. User A has created the document and saved it onto a network share folder. User B also has Microsoft Excel 2010 and can access the network share and can access the Excel file. User B also has full permissions to this file. User B should be able to Read, Write, Execute, etc., with the file. However, when User B attempts to make changes to the Excel file and save the changes to the network share, the user receives an error message reading, "Access Denied. Contact your Administrator."

Initially, we suspected that this was a simple permissions issue. Not the case. Looking further into the problem, I have since copied the entire Excel file into a completely new Excel file, saved the file to the Desktop and then moved the file into the network share location. User B still cannot modify the file and save it. I have renamed the computer to a completely different name and re-added the PC to our domain. Problem still persists.

At this point I'm thinking perhaps the issue lies somewhere within the registry. Rather than try and hunt down the problem, I simply reimage a new hard drive for the user, copy user files, etc., and add the computer to our domain. The problem still persists.

Recently, I have discovered that the problem occurs on other computers as well but only on computers with Microsoft Office 2010. Computers that ... Read more

I have recently purchased at New Computer running W7 Home Premium. So As most people do I am transferring all my files from my XP home Edition SP2 System over a simple home network.

When I tried to move something more that's more than 1 gig over to the W7 machine.. the New system freezes up every time and then shows me the Blue Screen of Death and reboots itself. If I stay under that amount of data everything works fine.

Is this a common problem with Windows 7?? and is there a work around to this?

Looking for advice..

Hi, I would appreciate any suggestions on a problem I'm having. I have a USR access point/router (USR8022) and a desktop and a notebook, both with wireless cards, hooked up to it. The desktop has a D-Link 802.11b card and the notebook has a USR 22 Mbps (802.11b) card. I can access the shares/printers on each computer...I can even open really small text files. But If I try to open a slightly larger file (300 KB) it cranks for a while and gives me an error. If I plug either computer directly into the lan port on my router (through the ethernet card on the computer) and leave the other computer wireless, it works fine. It seems to be something weird about the 2 different wireless cards communicating or something. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

Network- Linksys WRT54GS firmware 7.50.2- Netbook is connected via wifi, Desktop is wired.

I use my desktop as a backup for my "work" notebook. I am using SyncToy 2.1 (x64) to Echo my files to the desktop, and I had noticed that the file global-messages-db.sqlite (15,299 KB) would not copy over successfully from my Thunderbird folder. It hasn't worked in weeks.

The error message said- "Error:Unknown error. The specified network name is no longer available. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070040)"

I thought that was strange, but was not worried enough to pursue a resolution.

Then tonight I was using Explorer to copy an 82 MB file over to the desktop and it looked like it was working, then when the status bar got about 5% of the way it stopped, and after about 2 minutes I got a message-

There is a problem accessing \\MADKIWI\Download
Make sure you are connected to the network and try again.

I tried copying a number of different sized files over- and most smaller files get through, larger ones don't seem to work.

I copied files FROM the desktop to my notebook, those copied just fine. Even very large (350 MB) files copied over apparently with no problems.

Any ideas?

Firewall, anti virus, IPv6, homegroup

You should be running workgroup given that you have win 7 and XP machines.

Guys is there any way I can share large amount of files over the network?
I tried sharing the folder over the network but that gives a max speed of 2 MB/s. Is there anything I can do to get faster speeds?

A:Share large files over the local LAN network?

How are the computers connected to the network? Wired or wireless?

If wired, use good quality Cat5 or better cable. Ensure computers/routers have gigabit speed ports. How long is the cable run?

If wireless, what wifi standard are the adapters and router using, 802.11 N? How far are the computers from the router?

Are you sharing these files or just trying to copy them? If just copying, try a program like teracopy to see if it will provide better performance.

I'm having a problem when transferring large files between my network, and not sure what the cause is.

I'm trying to transfer files from my wired desktop to my wireless laptop, and smaller files seem to transfer okay. Whenever I try to transfer a really large file, however, the internet and connectivity totally drops on my desktop (which is giving the file) and causes the laptop to lose the file. The desktop computer stays offline for about 1-2 minutes afterward before it either starts up again on its own or I reset the network adapter. I suppose it's important to note as well that the file transfer can fail at the very beginning, in the middle, or even at the very end, but my desktop computer always loses its connection whenever the interruption happens... but sometimes it can successfully get almost all the way through the file transfer.

http://forums.techguy.org/networking/768807-cannot-copy-___-specfied-network.html
I tried following some of the steps in this case to confirm that I can ping and do all that jazz to my laptop and all of the services are running, since our problems seem similar. I've disabled all firewalls as well. However, since one computer is actually wired to the router, I don't think the solution will be quite the same.

Anyway, looking for some help, and glad to provide any additional information that I can. Let me know what I can do.

The ?problem? I?m concerned about is that I noticed existingExcel 2007 xlsx files are now saving with fewer Kb.
I have a Lenovo W700ds and a W541. Both computers are running Windows 7 Pro 64bit.The W700 has Office 2007 and theW541 has Office 2013.Both versions ofExcel are 32 bit as far as I can tell.
Until recently I was primarily using the W700ds but have nowswitched to the W541.

after I saw a larger file losing KB when saved, I did a test with a file that had not been altered or openedfor over two years. I copied it twiceand added a -1 and a -2 to change the names. The file was a small 832 Kb file. When I opened and saved on the W541 running Windows 7 with Excel 2013,the file saves with 771 Kb.When Iopened the file using the W700 running Windows 7 with Excel 2007, the computeron which it had originally been created, the file saved as 830 Kb.Both saved smaller but the newer computerrunning Excel 2013 was much smaller.Iam seeing these same types of ratios of reduction in size for much larger Excelfiles as well.

I have not documented any actual problems or loss of data withany of the files to date and I have used an Ultra-Compare text file comparison which found no differences.
Is there any reason to be concerned about this? And, if so, what to do?

As with many people, some of my files are the result of manyyears of work and I don't want to do anything to compromise any of the data butI don?t know whether or not what I?m seeing is normal due to both Excel 2007and Exce... Read more

This is my set up. I have my PC running Windows 7, connected through wireless to the internet and my home network via Apple Airport Extreme. I have a harddrive connected to the Airport Extreme acting as a network drive.

I can see the network drive, and I pull files of all sizes from it, but I have not been able to push large files to it. I can push smaller files to it with no issues (so far success with up to 706MB). I tried pushing a 1.4GB video file to it and it keeps giving me the error message: "There is a problem accessing A:\ Make sure you are connected to the network and try again"

I have an iMac hooked up to the network. I can push the same 1.4GB video file from my PC to the iMac over the wireless network. I just cannot push it onto the network harddrive. While I have no problems pushing large files onto the network harddrive from my iMac.

So in summary:
Pushing large files from PC to network harddrive - Failed
Pushing large files from PC to iMac - Success
Pushing large files from iMac to network harddrive - Success

I've tried most of the proposed solutions I found on the internet.
I've turned off the firewall - no change.
I've turned off my anti-virus - no change.
I've tried disabling autotuning - no change.
I've turned of the power setting on my network adapters - no change.
I've turned off the Remote Differential Compression - no change.
I've tried the file transfer in Safe Mode - no change.

In short, when I try copying large files ( > 1.0 GB) from my PC (wireless AC) to my NAS (ethernet), the connection drops sometimes (the sometimes is the irritating part.
- I have a Asus wireless AC adapter on this PC.
- It is more likely to happen if I am downloading other files (from the internet) while I am trying to copy this file (and this makes sense), however I would think it would just go slower (when I have more network traffic) - not just drop the connection.
I tried...
- Replaced every cable to Cat-6 within the past month.
- On my adapter I disabled the IPv6 (as I read that can cause connectivity problems).
- Updated the router's firmware. The router is an Asus RT-AC68u

I have a second PC with a wireless AC adapter and tried copying a large file to my NAS (ethernet), and the connection also dropped.
I don't know if this is a Windows 7 issue or if my router settings need to be adjusted to correct this. I did disable the IPv6, and I thought that would take care of it. If anyone can offer some suggestions, that would be appreciated.
Thank you.

Are y ou using "homegroup" for networking? Sometimes on some mixed OS networks homegroup has a problem with connectivity and slow downs.

You can verify if it is the problem by making a new network connection using "workgroup" and see if the problem still exists. If it does not you can disable IPv6 and kill homegroup.

Hello,

I'm sharing a folder on a Windows XP computer with 15,000 sub-folders/files over a small network. This folder used to be hosted in Windows Server 2003 machine. But after I made the switch to XP, accessing the shared folder over the network takes over 1 minute for the files to list.

Does anyone know what might be causing this slow performance? And is it related to the XP operating system?

Any tips and advice will be greatly appreciated.

I've been encountering some grey areas I'm not able to solve related to OneDrive and it isn't for a lack of trying. What I've been trying to find is the documentation describing OneDrive and how its architecture specifically interacts with Windows 8.1 and Office 2013.

The default in Office 2013 is the save to OneDrive by default. If logged in to a MS account, the path for the save appears to be a local drive (User name's OneDrive >> Documents >> Etc )) but is the familiar address: https:d.docs.live.net/fc**. An online connection is required in order to save or retrieve. What is the benefit of using this method - saving to the web and then having the file sync down to ones computer? Will the file be saved locally or what determines if the file is saved Offline?

Alternatively, one could save to the local machine's SkyDrive directory. Online access not required. The files would sync up at some point in the future. Yet this may significantly delay the syncd updates to the other linked machines and also places a risk of concurrent modifications to a file before the sync can occur. In my test OneDrive didn't warn me that the file had changed before allowing me to modify it. (I haven't downloaded the Windows 7 SkyDrive desktop addon for file sharing in the hope that this may be fixed in Win 8.1.1).

Can anyone point me to the documentation on the design of OneDrive and Office 2013 or explain how these were intended to work together cohesively with netw... Read more

Well, where to put this strange problem? XP, Office or Network Forum. All three seem to be involved somehow.

What gives?

I have a few large Excel files on
a) a share on a Win XP SP2 desktop
b) a share on a WIn Vista desktop
c) a share on a Ubuntu 6.06 desktop

When i mean large, i mean ~75Mb

When i work on my laptop (Win Xp SP2, 1Gb Ram, 1,86 GHz), i can access all shares just fine. But when i right click such a large Excel file on the XP or Vista computer and click 'Properties', my laptop becomes unresponsive for about a minute. Then, at last, the properties are shown. In the Taskmanager, on the LAN tab, it shows that my LAN connection is swamped at 70% for a whole minute. Sniffing the network traffic learns that the entire contents of the file is being transferred through the network to my laptop!
Just to see the properties...

However, when i right click the same file on a Ubuntu share, the properties come up instantly.

When i right click other large files on the XP/Vista shares (like *.iso of *.avi files), bingo, properties pop up instantly.

When i right click the large Excel files on the Xp/Vista share from a Win 2003 server (without office installed), voila, properties show up instantly.

So why is the whole Excel file transferred by just right clicking it for properties?
I'm convinced this behaviour adds to slow file share performance in general. For example, if i want to copy such a large excel file form the XP or Vista share, it takes 10... Read more

Hi

One of our users saves powerpoints onto a network share, she has been doing this for years, I upgraded her to office 07 yesterday and this morning she is reporting when she saves a file on the network share it reverts to the previous changes.

The thing is when you close the file and reopen after you have saved, the changes are there. But if you wait 30 seconds the changes are reverted back, has anyone come across this before? There is no error message and annoyingly it looks to have saved the file but it doesn't.

I've had my Surface Pro 3 for over a year now and I have always had this problem.
When I connect to the wired network at work using the dock, I have full internet access and can read files from my network drive, however everything hangs when I try to save a file, or create a new file. This is the case in any software (Word or other software). In Word, for example, I get the 'Saving as...' dialog box with the green bar that appears and stays for 5-10 minutes. Eventually the file is sometimes saved. It doesn't matter when it is a big file or a small file.
The same problem occurs with the surface Pro 3 dock, the USB network adaptor, and also an off-brand USB network adaptor. I recently upgraded to Windows 10 in the hope this problem would disappear, but it remains!
If I connect to our work network via WiFi, I have no such problems and can read and save files with no problem (although much slower, and only gives me limited access to the network - no printing, for example).
All updates have been installed. I've tried uninstalling the ethernet adaptor and reinstalling the latest version with no joy.
I have a Surface Pro 3, i7 64-bit processor, 8GB RAM.
I've followed these instructions for a similar problem, but also no joy (Google: Windows 10 Surface Pro 3 Docking Station Network Problem: SOLVED!)
Can anyone help?
Any help gratefully received,
Patrick

MS file explorer will make a meal of this so any suggestions for alternatives please? I have several folders each containing many thousands of files as above so moving a folder en-bloc is an option rather than file by file?

Simply drag and drop the folder(s).

Might want to do a copy first, verify that everything did indeed get copied, and then delete the originals.

Also I would like to make emergency back-ups of games in case the original discs are damaged, lost, etc. I only have a CD-RW drive so, my question is: Can I only use CD-Rs/CD-RWs to save? I'd prefer to save them on DVDs because of the large amount of storage space and I've heard they will not deteriorate as fast as a CD.

This was previously posted by another user with no resolution, does anyone have any ideas as it is still happening to other people:

I am running into a very odd problem with Excel 2003 and the creation of .tmp files. I am posting this on the Office support forum, but I am not entirely convinced this is an Office problem.

The workstations having this issue are running Windows 7 and have Office 2003. This is a company environment so the files are stored on a server that is running Server 2003. Our environment has a mix of users using both Office 2003 and 2007. Machines that are running Office 2003 SP3 and also have the compatibility pack SP2 to open Office 2007 files. When a user with Excel 2003 opens a .xlsx file from a network drive and saves it a .TMP file is created. If I save a file called test.xlsx it creates a file called test.xlsx~RF35148a.TMP. When Excel is closed, the file does not disappear so it is filling up some folders with these .TMP files. I also noticed that this does not happen with Word or PowerPoint files. I logged onto the machine as a user and as an admin to confirm it isn't a permissions issue.

I looked into this issue online for a while and most solutions involved disabling or changing the settings of the anti-virus software on the machine. All of our machines are running Symantec Endpoint Protection. I disabled the anti-virus on both the server and the workstation and that did not solve the problem. Hi guys,

Not sure where this should go. May require some network knowledge.

Scenario:

Users are all on work group PCs (public network) and access their Excel Spreadsheets on a network share hosted on a dedicated file server.

They have some pretty big spreadsheets i.e. 35-40MB

The smaller files open swiftly over the network.

But when you open the larger files it shows the initial Excel splash screen and within it shows the text - 'Downloading' in the bottom right with a progress bar.

My question is - is this normal if opening up an excel file over a network, should it show as downloading? If users are on an intranet accessing files then should it be downloading the file or just accessing via some protocol? Really trying to understand this downloading behavior, or whether this is normal and I can ignore.

Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Travis.

It may be saved in a different place that you think.

Best option is to save the file attachment to some location, such as your desktop. Then open your wordprocessor and then open the saved file. You can work on it and then save it (use the "save as" option) to your My Documents (the usual location - or wherever you save documents). Then when you reply to the e-mail, "attach" the saved file to the e-mail.

Hi,

Im having the wierdest problem for a couple of days now my computer starts acting up and at regular intervals im unable to browse webs, the browser says it's receiveing data but nothing happens. Now im able to ping ftp and do other connections to the outside world but not browse. As i have a fair amount of knowledge in networks i tried debugging it however this is only affected on this machine and is fixed by either waiting 5 minutes or reaquire DHCP. So i?ve tried everything on this computer to get to the source and since i cant find what is bothering it im left with the conclusion that it is some spyware, virus thingie. Now ive done everything mentioned in your sticky, im running pc-cillin 2006 and scan the machine every night. So im pretty confused now . I have a fake recolection of this happening before and i call to remember you good guys helped me :).

One more thing before i post my log the basic deal is that im unable to access web pages on the outside however i can ping and do other things on the outside, however i can still access web services on my inner net. Now if this was a router fault this would affect other computers but only happens here.

I understand you are unable to browse web pages etc. therefore any downloads i request of you will need to be transferred to the infected machine.

You may with to print these instructions out for use while in safe mode, as well as for person reference

Download this program and extract it to your desktop:

Submit Files Packer
http://www.safer-networking.org/files/sfp.zip

Highlight the entries listed below in bold and right-click,then select Copy.

Quote:

C:\windows\@@@\WIN32.EXE

Then start the file packer program and right click in the white box and select paste to paste the copied file names in the field.

Then press the Continue button.

It will create an archive with these files and a small log on your Desktop that starts with a name like requested-file[date].cab.

Rename this file to yourmembername.cab (for example Gustav.cab).

Then (using a cd or flash drive on another computer (if you can)) go to:

Our company bought and distributed about 100 of these computers to our various stores we support. We upgraded each of them to Windows 10. Almost all of the stores now have issues where one of the computers locks-up/freezes and in the process takes down the entire network. Not only is there no Internet, but you cannot ping between other devices on the network.Forcing the effected ThinkCentre M91p off by pressing the power button fixes the issues, and the whole network comes back online. After a bunch of research I think it must be the network card. The Intel® 82579LM Gigabit Ethernet driver is NOT available from Lenovo for Win 10. Not sure if you plan to host it on your site ever. Lenovo forums highly suggest to ONLY use the drivers hosted on the support site for download (Because they are tested). Well since that was not an option, I tried to use the newest version from Intel's website despite what Lenovo suggested... But the issues still persists.Since it takes down the network each time, and since the driver is not listed for Win 10 on Lenovo's site, I think that this is the problem (The network card/drivers/Windows 10)...Has anyone else run into this? Have you had success resolving it? We are in need of a resolution. Were almost to the point of sending USB to Ethernet adapters to the effected locations as a test. Thanks!Zach

A:M91P Win 10 - Freeze & Network Lockup

Lenovo doesn't have Windows 10 drivers for the M91p because that gen Intel processor (Sandy Bridge) is not certified to run Windows 10.   You may fix the network issue with a different adapter, but who knows what other issues you'll run into.   And if they're processor related, it will be unresolvable.

My computer seems to be having a very unusual problem. As soon as I select (click on) or attempt to play a video file (of any type), my computer locks up. Ctrl-Alt-Del does nothing and within about 3-5 seconds the mouse stops working too. Audio files play just fine and the video files can be played on another computer. This happened within the last week. I have also noticed that some of my games also cause the computer to lock up in the same way when I try to start them. Maybe because of the opening video sequence? One stange thing that I have noticed is that Num Lock is turned off as windows starts(it is on at bootup). I have an Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton core), 512 Mb ram, asus mother board, Gforce 4 ti 4400 128 graphics card, running XP Pro. I just scanned with Norton antivirus 2002 today with the latest virus updates. Could anyone tell me what is going on? This is very frustrating!

thanks,

I am running Excel97 (SR-1) on a Windows95 PC over a Netware5 network. When some spreadsheets are opened, the font display size is unreadably large (about 72 point) although it is still described as being the default 10 point. This applies to both the data in cells and the row and column headings.

If affected cells are selected and the font size changed slightly (eg from 10 point to 11 point) everything goes back to normal. However, the problem returns when the file is re-opened. This is happening on a number of PCs and none appear to have a virus (checked with latest version of Sophos).

I would be very grateful for any ideas!

*Sigh* If you didn't read my first thread, here are the basics. This WAS a connectivity issue, now it's a PC issue.

-Dell desktop PC running XP, connects to internet via a cellular AirCard. There is no router, modem, or other hardline internet connection there. Aircard connection is solid.

-Nintendo Wii, connects to the PC wirelessly via a Nintendo USB dongle attached to the PC.

Original problem, Wii could not connect to PC, PC was stuck in "acquiring network address" for that connection.

SO, I did the following:

-Deleted *all* Network Adapters in Device Manager (please note: this did not sever my internet connection because I use the Aircard, score.)

-Uninstalled the Nintendo USB dongle's software.

-Checked ipconfig/all, and the erroneous LAN connections were gone, IP for the computer is fine, DHCP off because I have a static IP, all was well. Internet connection was still up and running as well.

-Restarted, reinstalled the Nintendo software, which also prompted me to put the USB card back in, and which subsequently reinstalled the Network Adapter in Device Mgr.

-Everything installed and checked out, and I re-upped the settings on the Wii, which found the installed software and USB thing just fine

-BUT, the Wii could not connect to the internet, still.

-So I went back up to the PC and checked and rechecked everything - net connection was good, Nintendo LAN connection good...

-Then I ran the Network Setup Wizard, to make sure I had Interne... Read more

Hello I am new to the form and was hoping someone could help me with this really annoying problem. I have been having a issue with Windows XP Home SP2 where my system locks up when playing video and audio files. The problem has been happening for the past week and have attempted to do everything I can without purchasing new parts, which would be pointless as I don't know which if any part is malfunctioning, and whether it is a hardware or software issue. First I will the details of the problem and what I have done so far and then give you my system stats.

System lockup occurs doing any of the following:
- Playing the following formats in the players below: *.wav; *.mp3;
*.avi; *.mpeg;*.divx
iTunes, Windows Media Player 11, RealPlayer, AvRack
- Playing Video Games (all so far)
- Watching videos or songs on the internet ie. YouTube videos
- Listening to music via CDs
- Watching DVDs
Note: My system does not lockup right away the file usually has run
10-40seconds before it locks up my systems

Situations that does not lockup my system:
- Listening to *.mid formats - at least none have yet
- Playing media files in VLC media player - all the above formats
seem to work fine when
played with VLC.

Steps taken to resolve the issue (not in complete order)
Scanned with AVG, Ad-Aware, CClean - Issue Unresolved
Reinstalled Players - No Fix
Downloaded New Audio,Video, Mobo drivers

Was the Video Card a add-on or is it built into the motherboard. If it is an add-on I would try to remove it from your system and use the onboard video if it is on the motherboard and you have access to another I would try that. There are several things that could cause this to happen. Memory CPU video card etc etc. It may take a little while but through process of elimination you can figure it out. If you try video cards the next step I would go is memory if you have 2 memory sticks take one out and try it. If it still happens put that one back in and take the other one out and try it again. We recently had a video card that was locking up simmilar to yours but wasnt just in Video players was a random lockup whenever it basically felt like it.

Hope you get it resolved.

Good Morning,
One of the users I support has a spreadsheet on which he took a "snapshot" of a range of cells and pasted the range on top of a chart - kind of a more detailed label. He did this on his desktop version of Excel. When he tries to open it on his laptop he gets a message like: "The Picture Too Large And Will Be Truncated" and the data does not appear on the chart.

I have the same version on my laptop and do not get the error when I open the file.

Versions are:
Excel 2000 … 9.0.3821 SR-1 on the laptop
Excel 2000 … 9.0.6926 SP-3 on the desktop

The problem occurs in other spreadsheets where a similar thing has been done.
I have tried a number of troubleshooting things like changing the size of the snapshot, making sure it doesn't cross a freeze frame and others.

Any ideas?

Thanks,
Allyson

A:Excel Embedded Cells Too Large Error

This problem goes back to at least Office 97. You can try changing the resolution and updating the printer drivers, but no guarantees, unfortunately. Sometimes it also is also a memory problem, I think, so it may be just that your user does not have the RAM for the task.

I have a macro in EXCEL that will feed various SQL statements into ORACLE. It's fine when the SQL statements are fairly brief to just hard code them into the macro. I'm wondering whether there is a practical way to include a large SQL statement in the macro by some sort of indirect reference. I tried submitting a "Start command" followed by a text file location containing the SQL code in the macro, but it errored out with an SQL syntax error, even though the same statement worked just fine in SQL*Plus.

Any ideas on "elegant" ways to include large SQL statements, such as creating a rather complex view in an EXCEL macro? I'd rather not have to deal with all the extra punctuation created when the SQL code is coded directly into the macro.

My VBA skills are fairly intermediate at best, so please don't hesitate to be include details.

I've noticed this on only one of my excel spreadsheets. Sometimes, not always, when I open this file, the bottom row on one of the pages takes up the whole monitor viewing area. If there is- for example- 400 lines of data, the next line down won't have a number on the left. If I highlight this overly tall line and delete it, line 401 is now below line 400. I can't seem to be able to duplicate it at will, it just is there when I open this file. Again, sometimes, but not always, maybe once every 5-6 times I open the file. Thanks.

I can certainly split these up into separate procedures, but it would save time to have them all as one. Is there a way to override this error?

It is probably quite possible that you can considerably reduce the size of the Macro by rewriting it. Recorded Macros are notorious for having superfluous code in them.
If you post it I am sure that one of the Excel gurus can rewrite it for you, or at least point you in right direction.

Good morning,

My apologies in advance for posting a question that has been answered many times here and on the interwebs already, but the answers I find are mostly the same and I need further clarification, if possible.

I work at as a tech at a law firm and I'm having an issue where 2 users are using a shared excel workbook to copy and paste data into from miscellaneous client websites, such as client names, loan numbers, etc.

Every once and a while, when one of the users is done making their changes and saves their work, their workbook size will jump anywhere between 20MB and 250MB in size from the original, which is usually in the lower KB range. All answers I've found include copying and pasting the content into a new spreadsheet, recreating the document, finding the last used cell with Ctrl+End and clearing the blank spaces, and removing text styles like boldness and colors. All these solutions do work, but it's hard to keep telling an attorney to do these things without them biting your head off about it - because this does happen multiple times a day on this one spreadsheet. It is, in fact, due to blank cells, as the last active cell usually hits the 1,000,000 number range when the file size jumps up.

I heard there's away to lock a spreadsheet to a predetermined cell count, but I'm still researching this method. If anyone can provide me further explanation on why this happens and how to prevent it, please do. Thanks in advance.

Hi

I have a question about saving CSV files from Excel. I can save a file no problems using save as type but the thing is the text fields in the CSV format are not wrapped in inverted commas. E.g....

1,"Some text","Some more text","","Some more, and even more, text"

I have written a php script that imports the CSV file into a database using fgetcsv() so that users can save Excel spredsheet as CSV files. The thing is though that Excel doesn't wrap the text in inverted commas therefore the field above, "Some more, and even more, text", breaks the fgetcsv() format.

What I am wondering is if anyone know how to force Excel to wrap text in inverted commas or save using a different delimiter.

THanks in advance!

You might try seeing if changing the format of those fields to Text would help. They should already be, but you never know.

Hi all,

I have a large excel file - 50,000 KB that i created in Excel XP (large number of columns and rows AND a whole slew of graphs). I know this is large, but It worked fine in XP. I could change numbers, move around, etc. unimpeded.

I just got new laptop with Vista and Office 2007. Now to move around in this file is very slow. to move from one cell to another takes a long time, to go down in rows is very slow, etc.

I have saved this to the new .xlsx format and this did not help things, and did not make the file smaller.

I have 2 GB of RAM which i thought would be plenty. Any ideas what is causing this slowness? i have tried exiting out of any underlying things (spayware, virus, etc) to see if this would help but it has not... should i buy more RAM?

any clue what the issue is here???? i am hoping it is some issue and not that Vista and office 2007 is just slow, which is my impression overall so far.

Thanks!!!!!

I'm creating a new worksheet and ideally, one of the columns would be long, properly formatted text strings in one small, neat cell.

For example... suppose I would have first name, last name, favourite color, pet's name and other fields in their respective cells... but I would want a properly formatted "about" or "background" or "bio" type text in another cell for this record.

Obviously that text could be just a few words in some cases, or several paragraphs in other cases... but (again, ideally!) when copied out, it would retain all the line breaks and other formatting for it.

Another example could be gathering customer tetimonials... again, name, city, product they are offering a testimonial for... these are standard and basic fields in the spreadsheet. But (again, as an example of what I'm looking for), their testimonial text would be in a neat cell by itself... which, again, could be just one line of text or several paragraphs that would need to maintain it's proper formatting when copied out?

Is this even possible? I appreciate the assistance.

In case it matters, I'm running Excel 2003 (ie: Office 2003) on my Windows XP based PC.

Please and thank you.

Hi all,
This is just a preliminary request for advice before I undertake writing a fairly substantial VBA macro.

My plan, in short, is as follows:

- User receives a daily Invoice file. The data from this is to be dropped onto an Excel Table I've prepared (let's call this the Invoiced Table) in the Master File, which will allow some formulae, such as IFs and Vlookups to static tables, to auto-populate. Each day's data is to be appended to the bottom of the table.

- User receives a weekly Paid file. The data from this will be dropped into a second Excel Table (let's call this the Paid Table) on another worksheet in the Master File.

- Once the weekly file data has been dropped in, the user will run the macro. This will compare records from the Invoiced Table against the Paid Table using at least 4 (probably 8) different sets of lookups. In a simplified example, these might be 4 different customers.

- Each set of lookups will result in some matches. For each matching record for a specific customer, fields from the Invoiced and Paid tables need to be combined into a new record on a seperate worksheet.
So in a simplified example, Record 1 might have an Invoice Number in the Invoice Table that matches the Invoice Number in the Paid Table. I'll need to copy the Invoice Number, Customer Number and, say, the Invoice Date field from the Invoiced Table, plus the Paid Date from the Paid Table.

- I'll then need the macro to delete those lines from both t... Read more

Here's one that will convert it into CSV or comma seperated value, then it's easy to reimport it.

I wonder, do you think we're all miracle workers and can see what's happening on your side?
I think that your workbooks have problems locating the references that interconnect them.
What happens if you close only these two workbooks (one at a time), is it still slow?
Furthermore, how large are these files?
You're the only one that knows what calculations take place and links that are set.

I have a PC with Windows XP SP2. Also have an IPOD and its software loaded on the computer.

When I reansfer files from my Nikon camera SD card (they start as jpeg files), the automatically are converted to Quicktime files.

I have no problem opening them with MS Office Picture Manager or picture viewer.

Problem is when I want to share with friends and email them and they cannot open them.

How do I stop my computer from changing file extensions (type) when I copy jpegs to my hard drive.

If I can find out how to stop the changes, then I need to go and convert extsting files back to jpeg (several years of pictures).

HELP!!!!!

I have a problem with a program not saving preset data. Possibly due to harlink extenstion with only one piece of software.

I use symbolic hardlinks on my system but I do not know if the following has any bearing on the issue with the software I am using.

The software is a plugin that works within a host digital audio workstation software (Steinberg Cubase and plugin Soundtoys V5) and uses presets for different settings.

All software is legit and registered. I have contacted the developer regarding the issue with no resolve so trying here as the issue may largely be to do with windows.

The associate plugin has been installed with admin permissions and the host DAW software is run with full administrative rights. I have double checked that there are no hardlink main or subfolders used in the installation path for the plugin software.

All other 3rd party plugins work fine when saving presets and using symbolic links of which there's about 60+ 3rd party plugins installed using the main host system, however this particular software is not saving correctly.

It will save the preset name as a zero byte file and reports unable to save at location.

All other plugins work fine even when using symbolic links when saving preset data.

The issue may have been to do with a previous install of the soundtoys software as a phantom install directory is being created during the installation

E:\Users\Public\Documents\Soundtoys\Soundtoys 5

A:Data files not saving correctly [File names but zero byte files]

If you can select the save location, try saving to a different folder or on your desktop. It could be access right issue. I would find the specific folder, right-click on it, select Properties and then click the Security tab. To make sure there is no access restriction, I would add the user Everyone and give him (as well all the others) full access, just in case.

Hi,
I have been using Excel intensively for the past month for a 'volunteer' local project/event we are putting on here.
I now find I have a created a spreadsheet bigger than any I have ever used before.
It works great, except when I try to print it. It says it's preparing to print 100 -or more- pages (when there are only 6) which takes about 2 MB.
I had printed if successfully, and successively (since I need regular hard-copies to work on with other people), up to the end of last week.
I have also noticed the first page contains an almost microscopic rendition of the first worksheet, and subsequent sheets have various unrecognisable printings across them.

It is not my only spreadsheet, and the other ones (mostly just one page or extracts of the larger one) print fine. So it is not my printer.

Any suggestions gratefully received! :-)

A:Issue with large spreadsheet in Excel 2007: corrupted print

Hmm, think out loud...

My Excel 2007 print function defaults to "Quick Print" which sends the entire workbook to the default printer. Could that be a reason?

How many columns and rows is the worksheet in question?

Regards,
GEWB
