Active desktop - how to make a web page transparent?

Q: Active desktop - how to make a web page transparent?

Hi, I'm running active desktop on windows XP pro, and I have a little question:

Is it possible to give a web page that I've assigned to be part of my desktop a transparent background, so that my default wallpaper will show through in any areas not filled by content from the web page?

Thanks,

Andy

Hi

How can I use transparent icon-text on my desktop, while using Active Desktop?
This can usually be done by checking "Use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop" in System -> Advanced -> Performance-Settings, but this does not work while using Active Desktop.

This isn't a serious problem (don't even use AD), but I was just wondering if it was possible to do this, without downloading miscellaneous graphics-software or altering the registry etc.

I've tried everything I can think of, but I've been unable to make the text on my desktop icons transparent. I know the usual method is to go through control panel>system>advanced>performance settings and then check the box next to 'use drop shadows for icon labels on the desktop', however I've tried that and it isn't working. They were transparent up until a few hours ago and I can't recall doing anything that would have caused the text to have the colored box behind it again aside from applying an icon packager theme. I also tried uninstalling Icon Packager and rebooting, but that didn't make a difference either. The icons seem to have a bit of an outline around them also. Does anyone have any ideas as to what might be causing this? Thanks in advance.

Hey, I'm just wondering if there is a way to make the desktop icons not show trough the transparent top border of an application? I like my wallpaper to show through it, but not my icons.

A:Make desktop icons invisible trough transparent border?

Move them down a bit on the desktop?

As long as the top border of an application is transparent, whatever is behind it will be slightly visible, be it your wallpaper or desktop icons.

How does one drag-and-drop a web page to Windows XP Active Desktop?

I accidentally did it one day and was delighted with the results, but I can't repeat it and can't for the life of me find any mention online. The only way I can now accomplish the same result--displaying a web page in a window on my desktop, not just a link to a web page--is this sequence: Start | Control Panel | Display | Desktop | Customize Desktop... | Web | New.

When one adds an Active Channel via this "normal," Customize Desktop way, XP displays this box:

Quote:

Add Item to Active Desktop(TM)
You have chosen to make this site available offline and add it to your Active Desktop interface. If this site needs a password, please choose Customize and enter it.

I saw some sort of box when I drag-n-dropped the first time, and I'm pretty sure it was this same box.

I use Firefox almost all the time, so I believe I was using Firefox when the "happy accident" occurred, but I might have been using Internet Explorer. Also, I seem to recall dragging the body of the web page to the desktop but could be mistaken. For example, I might have drug a tab or the location bar. Dunno. When I attempt to drag-and-drop now, all I get is a shortcut to the page, not the actual page like I did the first time.

With Aero disabled you can't adjust the taskbar transparency manually like in the past. I'd rather turn it off but can't. I have some themes that make the taskbar transparent and I'd rather it was a solid color. To fix it I have to modify each theme , but can't be bothered. I switch to new theme every month or so. To do what you want you'll likely have to install a third party theming program.

All I want is to make the taskbar transparent, that's it. It really shouldn't be that hard, yet I haven't found a single way to do it.
All I've found are registry edits that make it a tiny bit more translucent, or third-party programs like ClassicShell that force you to have terrible-looking XP/Vista/7-styled start menus or explorer windows and just offer a transparent taskbar as a side option.
I used to have a theme that made the taksbar transparent after using UxThemePatcher (I think that's what it was called?) but that ended up crashing my computer after a Windows update and forcing me to reinstall the OS. So I'm NOT looking for any kind of hack like that.
If a program like ClassicShell that doesn't heavily modify/replace any system files or even require a reboot can so simply change the transparency of the taskbar, why can't I find anything out there that does just that?

Using the basic theme is the easiest way. You can also up the color intensity, which will make it less transparent. IMO its not hardly noticeable that the transparency is still effect at all when color intensity is at its max.

What method did you find for making it completely transparent? I might try it out sometime.

I think you're going to have to find a third party theme that provides a transparency effect. Start Menu 7 may do what you want. If it doesn't you might want to google transparent Windows 7 start menu and see what other people have developed.

Hi all fellow forum-ers

First of all would love to say I love this site, Im constantly learning new things and tweaks to make my windows that much more shexier. Currently I'm using star dock on auto-hide and I have relocated my windows start menu bar to the left side of the screen and auto-hide also, and use fences to hide all of my desktop icons (treating my 37 lcd tv as a sort of art/photo frame). What I would like to know is if there is a way to totally make the start menu bar transparent. I know there is a feature within Star dock that lets me hide the menu bar and use star dock as my sole menu bar but I find that I still feel more comfy navigating thru stuff on the windows menu bar. Its not really noticeable when I have a lite background but when the background switches to a darker theme the outline of the menu bar even when its hidden is really noticeable. So to make a long question short, how would I go about eliminating this issue??

Cheers

Hello,
I did a search on this on this board and didn't find much, but here goes. I have a black and white line drawing that I would like to make transparent. I can make part of it transparent using the "magic wand tool," then I "select inverse" on the layer panel. Then I click "add layer mask."

This works fine and dandy for that one area, but then it won't let me go through that process again on other parts of the line drawing. How do I get around this? Any help would be appreciated.

A:make line drawing transparent PS 4

You can use Select>Color Range and it will select all of the black when you click on one letter or line. You can also set the magic wand to do it by unchecking “Contiguous’ on the toolbar. You can then invert the selection or just click on the white background in the first place. Hit the “Delete” key and whatever is selected will be gone. Drag the drawing onto another image and it will go as a group and not take the background along.

In Settings/Personalization/Lock Screen you'll need to uncheck 'Show lock screen background picture on the sign in screen',
then create an account picture the exact same color as that solid color background, (usually your accent color), and apply it.
(You won't have an image for your sign-in screen)

Like in an animated gif I want to put on a page, and the background color is wrong. I can either make it transparent or change it to the color on the page.

I've used GIF works to do this with one pictuer (not animated) but it usually leaves little bits of the background color in and doesn't look clean.

I'm thinking Animation Shop has a way to do this, but never can find where.
I coudln't find what to use to select the background to remove the color and make it transparent. Even thought this must be one of the more simple things one can do to an image.

Looking in their HELP didn't do any good.

I've never needed to use this enough to find out what works and works best.

I have PSP7, Animation Shop3 and PSP6.

of coruse, where the animation has 10 frames I'd rather do it all at once in Animation Shop.

Thanks,

Carrie

Check the attachments bellow, my screenshot is the one without the fully transparent start menu, the other is a screenshot from one of Mr GriM's custom themes.
Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

A:How do I make Startisback+ 1.6.2 fully glass transparent

Your start menu will only be transparent if the designer of the theme designed it that way.

Click your start button, in any empty space on the start menu right click > properties, StartIsBack will open, select appearance, choose the start menu that goes with your theme by clicking on it then click apply and close the app.

If the person that designed the theme also designed a glass start menu you should now have a glass start menu.

What I want to do is download an image from the internet and then make the background transparent so I can use it on a Tee Shirt Design website.

First off, I already have "Paint" and it has a 'Transparent Selection" feature, but I don't know how to use it the way I explained above. Can someone tell me how to do this, or if it is even possible?

Secondly, if 'Paint" won't do what I want, do I need to download "Windows Essentials" or some other free software? I don't know if Windows Essentials has this feature.

Thanks in advance for your replies and I will check back tomorrow to read them.

A:using frontpage 5.0 and make a background semi transparent

If I remember correctly (I may be wrong) HTML doesn't support "semi-transparent" background colours.

What I'd do is create a 1x1 semi-transparent white image, and set that as the table background. I can't promise that will work, but it's worth a try.

I have never had this problem in web development. If you know of a website that does what your wanting to do, do you have the URL? Perhaps we could see how they've gone about it.

Edit: Actually, if the background is just black then can't you set the table background as grey (which would be 50% transparent) ?

problem with desktop display properties

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Two nights ago I visited the web site Flash Fun Pages to find a joke to send to a friend who is sick with cancer. I did not end up sending anything and logged out. Yesterday, the background on my desktop was hijacked by this site. I ran Ad Aware SE and AVG both regularly and in safe mode, but did not find any viruses or malware. I also ran Trend Micro House Call but that did not find any problems either.

The problem was that the backgrounds were frozen at the end of the list, on "desktop", and could not be changed. I went on line to Downloads.com and looked under desktop display hijacked and found some freeware named Desktop Hijack Fix. This got rid of the Flash Fun Pages joke links and ads, but now my desktop display backgrounds are still frozen, although they are now frozen at the top of the list--'none'. I can choose a color, but I cannot access any of the background options, including the photo of my dog, which is my background of choice.

Interestingly, there are two users of my computer, and the other user does not have this problem. I can change the display properties backgr... Read more

A:[SOLVED] opaque titles for desktop icons can't be made transparent/desktop always act

I have gone through the 5 steps.

Attached please find the Hijack This log, and the 2 DSS logs.

I cannot post the Panda ActiveScan log from my first scan because I simply forgot to upload it and when I go back to the site all it says is that 11 tracking cookies were disinfected. But I am attaching the log from my second scan. Interestingly, there were 4 additional low level tracking cookies found and disinfected. The same 8 vulnerabilities--all from Microsoft updates--remain on my computer since the software does not disnfect these or offer the opportunity to disinfect them.

Spyware Blaster has been set up to protect everything on my computer.

But the problem is still that apparently my desktop is active and cannoot be turned off. I have run Iconoid and cannot make the titles for my desktop icons transparent because it states that the desktop is active. You can see in my previous posting the work that Cool Freak has done to try to figure this out before he kicked this over to "the experts".

Please help me. It's not only that my desktop is ugly with these opaque icon title boxes, there is something wrong with my computer that is causing this that we have not identified as yet, and who knows what havoc that might wreak in the future! Thank you very much for your attention and help.

I had an external HDD put in as an external HDD, but for some reason it is marked as active (when connected with my normal HDDs windows will not boot), can I make it inactive WITHOUT loosing all the data (It has only my movie collection ripped from DVD on it) nothing else. I only found out the other day when I replaced my PSU with a new one, and windows would not boot until I disconnected it. (after having it connected without a problem for about 2 years).

A:Make an Active drive non-active

In a standard Windows PC, the active partition would be C, or System Reserved if you have that partition. Do you have both of those partitions and is either of them marked "active"?

The active flag has nothing to do with data.

A:Transparent Icons on desktop

Hi,

I don't know how to do what you are asking, but I do use another solution to your problem.

If you will right click your windows desktop you will see something that will come up and say NEW, click on that and another one will pop up and select FOLDER. Then you can name it what you want and place it on your desktop. Now, when that is finished, just drag anything in there that you don't want on the desktop as a separate item. I have about four of those on my desktop. I name them as an example "Video Vault" for my digital camera different programs. That way you determine what programs you have on the desktop.

Hope that helps.

A:Transparent Desktop Icons

The only thing that I could suggest is.
If your desktop icons are always the same, like recycle bin and three or four programs etc. I'd make some semi-transparent icons for each of them.
OR.
Go to and open your desktop folder, select all, r-click one of them to bring up the context menu, click properties, select hidden, apply, OK. In your Windows Explorer, click Tools on the menu bar, select folder options, then view tab, check show hidden files, folders and drives. That just leaves your recycle bin to deal with. For that you will have to change the icons.

Before it happen, I had a virus warning. I closed what I was working on and ran Malware and Vast which found a couple things. I ran Malware a second time which then came back clean.

I noticed that when I click on my computer that the list of shortcuts in the left column under favorites all my shortcuts under favorites are missing including Desktop, although it shows up on the field on the right side (transparent also). Most all my other icons are now completely transparent.

I do truly appreciate your help.

Thanks,
Bill

Under the General tab, is Hidden selected?

If it is, uncheck it and the same for the rest of your icons and other items.

I was at a friends house who has a fairly new Dell with Win XP
Her desktop icon text boxes all have the background color, instead of being transparent. I checked on everything I could and couln't fix it. Tried the display properties - appearance - effects - shadows on or off, changed backgrounds, etc., and looked elsewhere but couldn't find any thing out of the ordinary.
Her dispaly is an Nvidea at 800x600 80cps default settings.
Anyone have any ideas?

This question is about using "Page {PAGE} of {NUMPAGES}."

I've read many solutions for this online and in MS's help files. None of them are working, and it really has me perplexed because I consider myself an advanced user.

My document is a book:

The first page of my book is a cover page. It shouldn't be counted in page numbering.
Beginning on the second page, my book has a TOC and then 9 chapters.
The TOC and each chapter are set up in their own sections. (I do this because I include the chapter's name - which is the section name - in the footer along with page numbers. It also facilitates creating the TOC)
I want the TOC to be counted as Page 1
All of that works fine for the {PAGE} page number. To accomplish it, I told Word to start counting page numbers from 0, and I suppressed displaying the number on the Cover. Then for subsequent pages I selected "Continue from previous section."
My issue is that I really want to show both the current page and the total number of pages ("Page {PAGE} of {NUMPAGES}") in the footer.

When I try that, {PAGE} displays correctly, but {NUMPAGES} shows one too many. It is obviously counting the cover page.

Evidently what I did in #5 above only affects the count for {PAGE} and not for {NUMPAGES}.

All over the web I find the simple solution of using a formula field for {NUMPAGES} as follows:
=1+{NUMPAGES}

Actually, I think that would do the opposite of what I want. I would probably have to... Read more

A:Solved: Word 2007 Page Numbering: Make {NUMPAGES} start counting from Page 2?

I was just messing with the same issue and found a solution:

{={NUMPAGES}-1}

This may look exactly like something you tried already but here is the difference:

Instead of typing in the curly braces ( { ) manually, you have to hit "Ctrl-F9" to insert a field, then do the same for the braces around "NUMPAGES". You wind up with a field inside a field. That way it interprets the "NUMPAGES" as your document property, returns a number like "42", then the next field takes the equation "= 42 - 1" and returns "41". If you don't use "CTRL-F9" to enter the "NUMPAGES" field, it sees the first curly brace and stops, seeing it as a syntax error.

Hope it works for you! It worked for me!
-cheers

Hello! I have my daughters laptop, Dell Inspiron 1520 with XP. It will boot, but there is a semi-transparent gray box in the lower right hand corner with some kind of strange foreign language dialog in it. The task manager has been disabled and it will not connect to the internet. I've run a scan with the Trend Micro Client Server AV and it found nothing. I ran a malwarebytes scan which also found nothing. I've tried safe mode, and that gray box covers the whole screen so I can't click on anything. I can't get on-line to download Spybot or do anything else... any help would be appreciated!!

Hi,

You'll need to get some tools and transfer them to the system with issues. If you're going to use flash memory then better make sure it doesn't get infected (in case the problematic system has a flash infection).

1. Download Flash_Disinfector and save it to your Desktop of your clean system.
2. After downloading, double-click on Flash_Disinfector to run it.
3. Just follow the prompts and continue until it begin scanning.
4. If asked to insert your flash drive or any removable device including USB Pen Drive and Memory Stick, please do so.
5. It will scan removable drives, wait for the scan to finish. Done.

___

Download DDS and save it to your desktop from here or here or here.
Disable any script blocker, and then double click dds.scr to run the tool. When done, DDS will open two (2) logs: DDS.txt
Attach.txt

Save both reports to your desktop. Post them back to your topic.

Download GMER here by clicking download exe -button and then saving it your desktop:Double-click .exe that you downloaded
Click rootkit-tab and then scan.
Don't check

When scanning is ready, click Copy.

Hi,

I having a problem where if i set any short-cut on my desktop to a transparent one (both made in Photoshop, and one downloaded from here [7forums]) it will work until I log off (or restart ofc).

I have tried rebuilding the icon cache - again it worked until I logged off - and also tried rebuilding the thumbnail cache - but with the same result. Does anyone have any ideas?

The Install of Windows is fairly new only about a month old and although I do have a mod that removes the short-cut arrow this was happening before that point. - Just say if you want any other information.

Thanks, Wez.

Just a moment ago, I read a thread about how to display transparent icon text with ActiveDesktop enabled (http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/674919-active-desktop-transparent-icon-text.html). But the thread is closed, so I start a new thread.
In my image, Windows XP can not make icon text become transparent when ActiveDesktop enabled.

But I found a new software named WinDeskAngel can do it. It is very simple to implement it -- only startup the software!

i setup my office computer to be accessed remotely from home (both xp pro). i did this for the first time yesterday. this morning when i get to work i open outlook and it looks funny. when i hover over any menu item or toolbar the option is highlighted white (instead of its default blue)...plus, each toolbar is "outlined"...it looks like it has a perforation around it...i tried opening other office programs and they are all the same...no other programs are experiencing problems...it looks like it is showing 16 Bit colors....

my desktop icons are no longer transparent...ugh! i ran into this before and never figured it out...it just corrected itself...

note: i already have "use drop shadows for icon labels on desktop" activated...still no difference...

any suggestions as to why i lost transparency and why my office programs are displaying colors incorrectly?

Hi,

I think the title should be pretty explanatory.

Essentially, I have made a background with Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I have saved the file as PNG with Transparency. Windows Photoviewer shows the transparency but when I set it as my desktop wallpaper this transparency suddenly no longer exists and where is should be transparent it is a matt black.
Even when in a position mode where I can change the background, when I set it to white, it does change the background to white, but it doesn't effect the transparent area and it stays back.

Refer to image.
Is there any way to make the transparency work correctly.

Thanks in Advance.

Therefore, the home page remains blank, and the page I want to be the home page (and ONLY page) is invisible, because on the net it automatically goes to the index.htm page, which is blank. I know that sounds complicated, but my issue is: how do I import the page I created into the new web and make it the index.htm, or home page (the ONLY page!) Hey everyone! Just thought I would show you some screenshots of a transparency effect anyone can achieve using an application called Glass2k. This program allows any application including Universal Windows Apps, as well as the Action Center, Smart menu including tiles and file explorer.

Obviously some of you guys are not interested in any transparency effects but the possibilities to be creative are endless. In the screenshots some of the images use a blurred background, and the others aren't so your able to gauge different effects.

Glass2k also allows you to change how high the transparency it set too, with each app or menu set to different transparency level if be.

TUTROIAL:

1. Download the application (GLASS2K) - http://chime.tv/products/glass2k.shtml

2. Run the application.

3. The icon should show in the taskbar icons. Open it. Click settings.

4. Enable Auto-Load Glass2k everytime windows starts.

5. Enable Auto-Remember every window Transparency settings.

6. Disable Transparency Popup: Right Click

7. For the keyboard shortcut I use +Alt + Clrl.

8. To change an applications transparency hold alt + ctrl and use the numpad to change the value of transparency.

9. You will have to run Glass2k every time windows starts unfortunately.

10. To add transparency to the Start menu tiles: Open the start menu and click the grouped tiles headerbox. Now click and hold ALT+CTRL and while holding use the numeral pad to change the transparency ... Read more

A:Do I have to have DNS if I make an Active Directory?

What server are you talking about...2000 or 2003?

If it is a windows server the answer is yes...But there is a work around..

I have a Windows 2003 enterprise running as a file server..

Put your computers in the same workgroup...

put static IP's on your computers..

computers need to be on a router or same LAN

Have the same user name and password on the sever and desktop machine..

Put a file on the server and share it....in the permissions of that file put your user name. Give yourself amin or poweruser rights...

Log onto you desktop machine and do a network search or go to our "run" and

type in \\"server computer name here"

you should have a folder pop up and it should be the shared folder on the sever or you might get a logon screen pop up..either way. I you get the log on screen just log on and then the folder will open...

Now after you see the shared folder on your desktop machine you can close it...

Now click on my computer and you should see your folder listed just under the drives ...it should say network share..

right click on the netork share...send shortcut to the desktop...

Now even after you reboot ..once you log onto the desktop computer the shared server folder will be there....

I cannot get my HP Compaq Presario CQ56 notebook to recover if I put it into sleep mode. I have tried a number of 'cures', non of which have worked. The latest 'solution' I have read is to go into Disk Management and make C: drive 'Active'. However, the process throws up dire warnings that, if I proceed it may make the notebook inoperable.
Apart from C: drive partition (297 GBs), which shows as "Healthy (Boot, Page File, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)", I also have a System partition (199 MBs) which shows as "Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)" and an HP Tools partition which I guess has no bearing on this inquiry.
Am I correct in assuming that the System partition contains the Operating System and not C: drive and this being the case I should definitely NOT make C: drive active? Very sorry if this is pretty basic to most.

A:Should I make C drive Active?

Not likely you should make the C drive active.

Your system partition is active and that's fine.

Windows is on the C partition. The boot files for Windows are on the system partition.

Some machines do NOT have a system partition. In those cases, yes, the C drive should be marked active.

I know nothing about HP notebooks, but it appears the cause of your problem is not related to which partition is marked active. Look elsewhere.

Hello all, I am new to these forums so please forgive me if I put this post in the wrong area or something of that nature.

I'm running a 2 month old Toshiba Satellite PC, when suddenly all of my Partitions, except for my C: drive disappeared. My computer also failed to recognize my CD/DVD Rom drive, however, after searching around I was able to find a lot of people with the same problem and recovered that Partition and the use of the drive by deleting the upperfilters in my registry. But the other Partitions are still gone and marked as inactive in my Disk Management. This is what I am looking at:

As you can see, it shows an additional two partitions, but they cannot be made active by right clicking them. When I right click them, all options are "greyed out" making it impossible to preform and actions.

I tried using a couple partition recovery softwares, but to no avail, because I am not trying to recover lost partitions, I am trying to activate partitions that are already existing. I have norton 360 installed and ran several anti-virus programs that came up cold. However, I did find one gentlemen on youtube, that had the same problem and fixed it by restoring the computers factory default settings. This is the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0qENIBLo5s That's almost identical to my problem, and like the gentlemen in the video states, there does not seem to be a lot of info available to this particular situation, unless I missed it.

A:All of my Partitions disappeared and I cannot make them active.

As this may be caused by an infection, install, update and run a full scan with Malwarebytes, in Safe Mode if necessary.

Next run Partition Wizard Partition Recovery Wizard - Video Help to try to recover the missing partition.

The only partition which should be marked Active is the one intended to boot Win7, which for your model is likely the Recovery partition. However it is missing it's System flag which signifies where the System boot files reside, so I would boot the Win7 DVD or System Repair Disk to run Startup Repair - Run up to 3 Separate Times to correct any problems with the boot files and config.

Hi there,

So a while back when i was running XP on this rig, i had a active desktop wallpaper setup that would display animated local radar images. Basically the same radar you would see if you put in your zipcode in the weather.com or accuweather.com radar section.

So now with Win 7, i cant get it to work for the life of me....and no, sorry, the wimpy sidebar gadgets just dont cut it.

Basically what it was, and am looking to accomplish, is have a live animated radar as my wallpaper / background.
Preferably not the whole screen, just alike a 12X8 square or something relative.

Picture attached of a mock setup of what im talking about.

Im pretty sure i originally was using this as my source for the animated wallpaper:

I'm trying to recover data from a faulty HD using a linux live CD (ubuntu rescue remix) to image the data and try to retrieve it later on. Here's where the problem starts: apart from the usb from which I launched the live CD, no other devices were showing (lshw listed nothing, except the usb itself). After some research I remembered that my MBR always gets f***up after a re-install - not entirely sure if it's when amd chipset [sata] updates microsoft msahci or after I move the user folders from my ssd to my hd (symlinks), I also recall something about sata ports creating some problems - having to use port 3 for (re)install or something like that.

Anyway, I began to try fixes for this issue when the problems with the MBR started to show it's ugly teeth again. The thing is, I can't launch windows repair* (from the install CD) because it doesn't recognize the current OS. It simply doesn't list it. this doesn't merit a new post, but I just found out that I've been using the pre-install win7 disk instead of the installation one (OEM win7 pro x64 Version). That explains why I've been going straight to the command prompt when booting from the dvd. Anyway, nothing new yet. - symptoms:

I took out the SSD hard drive I had in my laptop
I had a backup on Acronis of the current SSD's state
I had a super clever genius idea: I decided to format the C drive of the old hard drive
Damn, damn and bl**dy damn!
Now the MBR is gone
I've spent many many hours on this damn problem

I have it hooked to my new laptop in an external enclosure
In disk management, it wont give me the option of making it be active
I can only make a simple volume

Why cant I see make active volume option??
Is there anyway of making active without getting a 3rd party tool (even if free)?
If I have no choice, I assume the best choice is the one from easeus? (That's the one that keeps popping up in search results)

Thanks
OM

A:How do I make an external hard disc active?

OK... I solved this one - after many painful hours!

I used Acronis to restore my backed up image
It set the default option to GPT for the hard drive
GPT is some other form for the hard drive other than MBR
A GPT hard drive cannot be made primary or active

I had to use EaseUs (while installing being careful to avoid installing spamware)
I wasn't 100% sure if MBR was actually erased - I did format the main C drive
Either way, I wiped everything and put my image back

Everything working fine now

Phew!

Hello,
I would like to say I inadvertently made by secondary hard drive active.. It was not. Is there a way to make it not active? As it is listed in the BIOS as the non-boot drive, there doesn't appear to be a conflict at this time. But I would like to correct it if possible. Thanks for all assistance.

Removing the Active Flag from a Partition

Partition - Mark as Inactive

Make sure you choose the correct Disk / Partition !

A:Get Cursor bounce to make active window smaller

Hi there,

I looked around in Control Panel to no avail. I'm not quite sure what you mean by 'bouncing cursor' or 'making windows smaller'... are you talking about Aero Snap? Sorry if I'm misunderstanding.

Cheers,

I use Win7 Home Premium x64 SP1.

I'd like to have a 100% transparent taskbar with 0% transparent icons (including pinned program icons and systray icons). Can that be accomplished?

I have tried Glass2k, TransBar, Transparent Taskbar and TClock 2010. None of them allows the taskbar icons to be kept intact when the transparency of the taskbar reaches 100%.

So I can't access the boot menu to load windows installation disk from drive or usb, I've tried all the keys from the startup and I can't even go into windows installation disk to repair my MBR.

I also can't make my primary partition active through disk management or CMD, when I try, the option is grayed out for me.

In CMD, it simply says: "The selected disk is not a fixed MBR disk. The ACTIVE command can only be used on fixed MBR disks, so I'm assuming my MBR is corrupted. But I can't fix my MBR without going into the boot menu so I'm lost here.

Note: I can still reformat the computer by loading it from windows but not from the startup.

PROBLEM1
Sometimes, for no apparent reason, it becomes impossible to click on a partially obscured window to make it the active window; it's as if the window in the foreground has "gone modal" on me.

PROBLEM2
Conversely, sometimes a partially obscured window will become the active window and come to the foreground even if I have not clicked on it.

PROBLEM3
Sometimes when I'm in a browser (ANY browser, not just a particular one), and click the back button, the browser goes back, as it should, but then after a couple of seconds will return to the page I had just been looking it, as if it had a mind of its own.

There is a long thread on Technet about this, with many people reporting the problem as early as 2009 in Vista. I'm running Windows 7 x64 Ultimate. I hope there are some good ideas here on this forum, as these problems are making my system unusable, because they happen every few minutes! Arrrgh.

These problems happen in normal mode as well as Safe Mode.

To temporarily fix the problem, I must CTRL-ALT-DELETE and then click CANCEL to return to the desktop.

Here's what I have done to troubleshoot:
1. Bought a new wireless mouse and new wireless keyboard.
1a. Tried a new wired USB mouse.
2. Checked for new device drivers.
3. Run ASUS M/B diagnostics. All's well according to them.
4. Scanned for viruses (using two different A/V programs one after the other, not installed simultaneously)
5. Restored to a restore-point from a month ago, before the problem star... Read more

So, my brother is trading me his iTouch for my Zune, so I have to go install iTunes...which I hate...alot. It takes me a day to figure out how to get it installed (thanks to google, I managed to figure out I had to search and delete everything having to do with quicktime) But doing this would appear to have caused another problem...the Active Desktop Recovery and script error. I googled that again (Google is my life saver) and found the standard fix and did it. I unhid all folders and looked for desktop.htt in its supposed location and it wasn't there. I also use Google Chrome instead of IE8 if that means anything.

A:Active Desktop Recovery (desktop.htt not the problem)

Welcome to TSF!

Click Start | Run (or press WinKey+R), type regedit, press Enter
Navigate to here:

Code:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop
Find the ForegroundLockTimeout entry in the right pane
Double click it, select Decimal, then enter the time in milliseconds that you want the system to wait before making the window Active.
The default value is 200000, (200 seconds, or 3 minutes 20 seconds).

Reboot for the setting to take effect. This is a per user setting.

I've been trying to set the company I work for up with a standardized Outlook signature. I found a great Powershell script to take care of it. Here's a pastebin of the entire script. Well, I've set the script up and have it run by a logon batch file set to run in each user's Active Directory profile. I figured we were using one anyway, so might as well just add to it for this functionality. Well, the batch file loads the script every time without fail, and the script is capable of working, but doesn't always. While testing I restarted/logged in and out several times to make sure the script was doing it's job. I didn't change the logon batch file, and I didn't change the Powershell script. Well, sometimes the script works and Outlook applies an accurate new signature to my emails with information pulled from AD just like it should, and sometimes it doesn't. When it doesn't, the error I get is:
Code:
Exception calling "FindOne" with "0" arguement(s): "Logon Failure: unknown user name or bad password."

+ $ADUserPath = $Searcher.FindOne <<<< ()

+ FullyQualifiedErrorID : DotNetMethodException
Because of this one error, all of the AD fields that are queried later in the script return null values, which messes the... Read more

I update files within an organization web page, which is maintained by another member.

I just installed Windows 7 with Explorer 8 and can no longer save the file with it original format that includes jpg pictures. When updates are saved to my Desktop (or anywhere), the jpg links to the web page are broken and I get an “x” box instead of the picture, accompanied by the following message:
Some pictures have been blocked to help prevent the sender from identifying your computer. Open this item to view the pictures.
However, the pictures do not show up when the file is opened.
I have also received a slightly different message:
The help protect your security, Internet Explorer has restricted this web page from running scripts or active X controls that could access your computer.

Previously, I was able to save the updated file from my Desktop back to the web side and maintain its original format.

How do I disable this protection/restriction? Can it be disable for only the organization’s web site?

Thanks for your guidance/assistance.

I don't find the desktop to be of much use, too many icons take away from the image I choose to display, but I do use the desktop toolbar from the taskbar quite a bit.
There are icons that I cannot remove from the desktop toolbar such as the Network & Control Panel icons they won?t leave the toolbar, and I can?t seem to kill the IE icon off for good, either. Does anyone know how to kill them dead and send them to Vista Hell?

Hello, My mother in law gave my wife her Sony Vaio laptop which she hardly used. I installed a Netgear router and the laptop seemed to function fine. My wife wants to do banking so went to the wells fargo site and got the message"Your current security settings prohibit running Active X on this page. As a result the page may not display correctly. After 4 days of trying to correct per instructions off varied web pages, nothing works. I changed the levels of security on internet options for the internet and trusted zone. Even had both on low, custom level, etc. Changed settings in the Registry following very carefully instructions. Went to the MSN update and got the same error mentioned above. Could not find a firewall and did not have any anti virus loaded on the laptop. There was AVG however, it was not functioning. If there is anyone who can help and use four letter words please, am not a computer expert, it would be appreciated. Also, sites like ebay, pogo, etc are working fine, just appears to be secure type sites.

active desktop is like having a webpage for your desktop right? anyway. i just wanted to know if there was a way to turn off the warnings you would get from trying to open an exe from internet explorer.

the thing is, i thought it would be cool to have a webpage for my desktop and i wanted to make all my icons and shortcuts as text links instead right on my desktop.

i can do the html real easily and make it look cool. but if when i want to launch maybe microsoft word or photoshop from an html file (the active desktop) then i'd get the obvious security warning messages about "downloading exe's is dangerious, do you want to open or save?".

so i was wondering if there was a tag of sorts, i can use to disable that on a link by link basis, (or keep it only on that page) because i dont necessarily want to deactivate my default ie security settings or anythign like that which i think would be dumb.

so i was just wondering.

and in case your wondering "why". i once saw this cool desktop online with some neato text links for a menu instead of lame icons. and i thought it could be done in html and maybe using active desktop. however i wouldn't be surprised if it turned out to be maybe like litestep or desktopx. but i woudl personally rather NOT use those programs just to get a kewl desktop. i wanted to keep it simple. so i was just wondering. let me know. thanks in advance.

I have XP media edition and I was putting a jpg file on my desktop last week when it said something about active desktop. I was in a hurry so I clicked it and since then my desktop icons have dark blue labels, indicating that it is in active desktop mode, I guess.
I don't like it but I can't find any way to get out of it and get back to normal. There is nothing in the help files about it or online as far as I can see.
I even tried that program that reverts you to a previous day but that didn't work either.
Anybody know how to fix this. i'd really appreciate it.
Thanks Pam
