Great Backup Device

Q: Great Backup Device

Most of you know that you don't really know if your backup device is really going to work until you lose everything and then you have to do the backup thing. Well, it happened to me a few weeks ago and I am here to report it to you. Something or somehow I corrupted my registry and could not get my win2k pro to boot - only a BSOD. It happened while my wife was on the computer and scanning data at the same time and she swears she did nothing - right famous last words. Well, anyways i had to call my computer guy to come look at this one because it would boot up to the windows screen and then crash. He was able to use my win2k disk, but after the repair - all the desktop was gone except what looked like a fresh install. So I installed my Retrospect software that comes with the Maxtor One Touch. Then I fired up the retrospect and it immediately detected the maxtor. Next, I selected the restore function and it started running. I left and when I came back, I rebooted and voila - everything was there. So the message is if you want a safe reliable easy way to save your data, then the Maxtor One Touch may be for you especially if you are not a technophile who has lots of time to restore things off of disks or floppies. I set my maxtor to backup every AM at 0300 because of what happened. Hope this helps someone out there from experiencing that sinking feeling when you have lost a lot of important data...doc

This time I would like to tell you about, maybe not well known, but excellent software which can provide you easy and reliable your E-mails backup strategy.
I'm talking about MailStore Home - it's free, but in the past it was a paid software.

This is how the main menu looks like:

Hi there
For outlook why not just use pfbkup.exe or even the archive function.

For Outlook express just change the data area where the folders are stored and just save these with Windows express.

For other email clients this might be OK but I'm now trying to "minimize" the number of 3rd party apps I have on machines. Maintenance and serial numbers etc etc gets ever more complex so I'm "Going back to the roots".

A 3rd party app for me now has to do ALL of the following

1) Is it SIGNIFICANTLY better than what is available in the standard system.

2) Is it cost effective.

3) Is the manufacturer / developer still going to be around a few years later or are you going to get stuck with some obsolete app a few years down the road.

Paid apps that I use that MS has no better or equal equivalent for (to ??) are things like Photoshop CS4, Acronis True Image (MS backup is getting better but still doesn't have anything like the functionality yet), some audio editing software, DVD authoring, Winamp,MS Office. (Open Office does a passable job but still doesn't compare with "the real thing" especially as MS office - even the Enterprise version can be sourced HEAVILY discounted -- either as a student, via MS Use at Home programs --get your employer to sign up) or technet /msdn.

Free 3rd party apps - MySQL, WAMP server, ?Torrent

Jury's still out - Firefox vs IE8.

(Corporate apps like SAP with its front end GUI, Oracle, Eclipse IDE etc don't co... Read more

Hello all,

I am running "windows backup and restore" on one of my external hard drives and WDsmartware (western digital software that came with my other external drive). WDsmartware eats up WAY to much resources. Would I be better off just using "windows backup and restore" for both drives? are there any free programs out there that are "better' than windows 7 "backup and restore"? thanks a lot.

A:Looking for a great external hard drive backup program

If 'Windows Backup and Restore' is working, then I'd keep using it.

Doesn't hurt to try other programs.

I have tried every tip and trick to get MJ to work and have come to the conclusion that it is too unstable and totally unreliable, I have scraped it and have moved on to a new VoIP device that is working great! It is called an Obi-110 and you can buy it on Amazon for $50. You use it in conjunction with Google Voice and is free. You plug it into your router so there is no need to have a computer running continuously, the sound is loud and clear and has many more options with it including an app for your smartphone to make free calls! I have not had it go down since I installed it and have made lots of calls with it. I highly recommend it.

Hello,
My Vista backup is no longer backing up. It fails because it says drive "L" cannot be found. Well, my external drive is labelled "J," and has been for the past year when I've successfully backed up my hard drive. When I attempt to change the settings to back up to drive "J," it just says "looking for backup devices," and just keeps going on forever, never finding "J." I can see J in windows explorer, and it seems to be functioning just fine. Any ideas on how to get it to find drive J again?

Hi all,

I have an old hard drive for my pc that I would like to use as a backup device. Since it is not in my machine (and I don't want to put it back in), I am looking for a device that allows me to connect it via usb to use to backup my work.

I am sure I have seen these a while ago and they cost around £10-15, though I can't remember what they are called or what they look like, so I'm not sure what to be looking for.

Can anyone help?

thanks,

I recently purchased a 329G backup device by Hitachi called Simple Tough. My intention is to be able to transfer files, photos etc., from my old laptop running Windows XP to a new laptop that I plan to purchase with Vista. I've done a full backup on the device but the company says it won't allow me to transfer the files to a Vista OS. I downloaded Microsoft Easy Transfer and did another backup but the device "E" drive does not show any files under the title "old computer". Is anyone familiar with this type of backup device and explain to me if I'm on the right track how to restore these files on a Vista laptop? Or, is this the wrong device for what I want to do?

Just had a major catastrophe with my PC and I'm looking for a new backup device that will have an option for me to schedule mu backups daily. I currently have a CD Burner but it's jus not cutting it.

I've looked into the new 750MB Iomega ZIP drive that comes with software which will allow me to schedule backups and I've also looked into some tape drives. These are my two economically viable options but I'd like to get an outside objective view on these two products as well as possibly some new ideas.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated.

I'm also running 3 PC's on a newtork and I'd be backing up just data from all three so the size of the device media would not need to be that great. Just regular old word and excel files and such.

Thanks

I have never known any backup device to need to update. Recently, I bought a new one which is WD My Passport and it asks to do an update every month. So far, it has done two and, both times, removed its shortcut icons from my desk top. Now it wants to do a third update and I worry about what it might remove.

Why would a backup device need to update? Is it because it is called an "external hard drive"?

Or, one more possibility: Because my ESET antivirus program was taking far too long to scan, ESET people suggested I disconnect the backup device while the scan was going on. They said it didn't need scanning since it held only what ESET has already scanned inside the computer.

Please, can anyone fill me in on the need for a backup device to need updating? Thank you.

A:Updating Backup device?

Hello hazel m!

The way you're describing it, it shouldn't be something to worry about.
Like it is said in the WD My Passport pdf user manual, messages for available updates can pop up, for which you'd have to click Update Software and follow the on-screen instructions for downloading and installing the software update. This software could be the firmware, or WD software.
Some of these updates can be checked for automatically (hence the pop up), like the WD SmartWare, depending on the setting you set up.
Which WD My Passport do you have? And are the updates any different from what I am describing?
The disappearing shortcut should be because of the device being external (plug and play) and after the update it refreshes, hence need of new shortcut.
Is there any other troubling issue occurring?

Cheers!

Hi

This problem has really got me stuck!

DETAILS:

Dell D600 Laptop
XP Professional SP1

PROBLEM:

A user logs onto the pc (the owner). He connects the usb device to the laptop. The pc appears to recognise it (hard light flashes and hourglass appears for a bit).
If he looks under My Computer the device is not shown. Under Device manager the USB Mass storage device is shown and is working properly.

The user logs off and I log on.
The device is shown under My Computer!

I renamed the users profile to XXXXXX.old (x being his username). User logged on again and the pc created a new profile. Looked under My Computer and the device was there. Great! Copied all his data over from the old profile and ended up rebooting anyway. Check My Computer and the device was gone! ????
It seems the reboot "killed it" even though USB mass storage device is shown under Device Manager and working fine.

If I Logon I can see the device. If I reboot and logon I can still see it.

Man this is driving me nuts. I've tried several backup devices, all the same issue.
Any ideas?

Thanks!

A:Backup Device Not Responding?

Gerry,
It is probably something very simple.
Make sure there is enough room left on the disk and it is not write protected.
Run Scandisk on the floppy to see if the media is ok.
Reformat the floppy and try again.
Also check that your CMOS settings show the correct type of floppy drive (1.44 MB or 720 KB for instance).

Have two different external hard drives and wondering if either/both are suitable as Back Up and Restore Devices For Windows 7..

1) I have a Western Digital 750GB passport usb portable hard drive.
It is formatted HFS+ with MacDrive...

*1A) Possible/definite issues using as Back Up Device when need to restore/repair, ect on Windows 7?
1B) Will be installing windows 7 on second PC soon. Can HFS+ drive be used to Install windows 7 Image/clone (from Laptop) on new fresh Hard Drive?
---
2) Second external is a network device (not quite a NAS?, but connected to Ethernet LAN port on my router) it is a Segate GoFlex Network Version...

2A) Are there issues with using external network HDD as a back up device?
2B) Possible/Likely issues accessing network device if using to restore back up on crashed/damaged or fresh Windows 7 OS and/or program/user data
*** meaning will network attached drives not even be accessible if windows is screwed up or during install on fresh HDD?

Not priority, but if anyone knows off top of head...
Segate goflex network external drive has a usb connection port on back...
I know segate sells 'usb adapters/cable KIT' for some stupid cost.
*Can I connect the external drive to my pc with a normal USB cable?
If so, what type of ends exactly? (ie Male to micro/"B", whatever?)?

Thanks again everybody for support!

A:HFS+ USB HDD backup device indows 7

I'll try to answer part of your questions. Windows will not install from a HSF+. As far as I know it has to be FAT or NFTS. Mac can read NFTS but not write to it, but windows cannot read HSF+.
As far as the Network drive. ASFIK, it depends on which version of windows 7 you get. Home premium will not back up to a network. Professional and Ultimate will. Home Premium will back up to USB or eSATA. As far as the adapter for the Seagate GoFlex, check Amazon, they sell them much cheaper than Seagate.

Someone suggested I could use Synctoyt o speed up the process. Does this sound like a good idea?

Hello 1gouravgg, and welcome to Eight Forums.

I find that saving the downloaded driver installation files from the device or PC manufacturer to a drive other than the one Windows is installed on a great way to back them up. This way they are quickly available to install as needed.

I'm operating on a Dell Inspirion 5150 Laptop/Windows XP.
I have had a CMS External USB Backup Device for 6 months now. All of a sudden it gives me an error message when I plug it into my USB port. It states "the Device is more powerful" then the USB hub speed can support. Then asks me to detach device and hit "reset" to reactive that port. I've tried my other USB port as well with the same error message. I was not having those issues before, even though I was using the same laptop. Anyway to fix that?
The device still has room for additional storage as well. It is not full.

I run a backup tape on the company server, it schedule at 2:00 o'clock A.M. My problem is we have a alot to storage so when I come in at 6:00 A.M. I put a second tape in. Then at around 12:00 P.M I put a 3rd tape it finally completes its the whole backup.

Here is my creative thinking. Is there a external backup device that I could put 3 tapes or more in and have a Data tape that is tied to the device ( example; Think of a box with a tail and at the tip of the tail it has a data storage tape ) and then insert that tape to the server so when the backup schedule runs at 2:00 A.M. and when it stops at 5:00 A.M it will trigger the second tape in the device and so forth. Hopefully I made this clear.

Is there a device like that?

I'm not sure if this should be posted here, since I guess that it is a systems failure issue.
I am having some major issues with attempting to do a backup of all my system drives - all attempts have failed.
What I have done so far;
Tried to do a Windows backup from my laptop to a Passport external hard drive - first failure.
Failed again when I tried another Windows backup, this time to an Imation external hard drive - second failure.
Did an Administrator CHKDSK/R on the Laptop hard drives, and both external hard drives. All came up clean.
Tried to do two more alternative backups using Macrium Reflect - both similarly failed.

After each failed backup, all attempts got messages similar to the following;

Hello Everyone,

I've installed Microsoft Windows 8.1 Version 6.3.9600 Build 9600 on my HP 430 Notebook PC with 1 GB RAM and Pentium CPU @ 2GHz 2 Cores.

Display drivers are not working properly (i.e., everything appears bigger and unclear), earlier I'd successfully updated the display drivers and made it work using Device Manager. Can anyone help me making a backup of the drivers (may be in .inf format) from the installed drivers so that I don't have to update it every time I re-install it.

Thanks

A:How to backup Drivers from Device Manager/Installed Dvr ??

.Inf is just a file with the drivers. If you want real backup of drivers, use a program like this: Download Double Driver - MajorGeeks or Download Driver Magician Lite - MajorGeeks
They can be restored using that program or partially one by one or only specific ones.

Several years ago, I read about a network attached device that used a protocol that was unlikely to be infected by a virus. I don't remember much about it except it didn't use the usual protocols and was therefore safer to use than, say, a USB drive connected to a router with usb port. If I remember correctly, it was connected to a router or computer via an RJ45 port.

Does anyone happen to know what I might be writing about?

The thing I'm trying to do is protect an always-connected, always-on backup device from something like ransomware by using an unusual protocol -- if that is even possible.

A:Network Attached Backup Device that Resists Infection

Most infections are the result of the file being copied onto the drive (ie: the files are infected before they are copied to the drive) or a device which has access to the drive. In which case, how the drive is connected or how the data stored is irrelevant.

I am making regular backups - both the image backup and the file sets using Windows 7 Backup program. No problems with that.

But, I periodically would like to copy the image backup to a portable drive. I plan to take this portable drive offsite to a secure location - I call it my archive.

Is this possible? What files must I copy? Do I have to maintain a certain directory structure or naming convention in case I have to use the archived copy to restore (assume a bare metal restoration)?

I thought I could just copy the VHD files (boot and system) but the image backup has other directories and files and I just don't understand their purpose.

I need to copy these files rather than running the backup over again to this portable archive device. I have multiple computers and it is impractical for me to physically access each computer to re-run an image backup to the same archive device.

My archive device is a regular USB/eSata HDD and I don't plan to put VSS on it.

A:What is the best way to backup installed device drivers for use of fresh Windows

Personally, I would create a disk image on an external hard drive using somthing like Macrium Free. Make sure you create a WinPE bootable disk using the program and make sure it boots. On a Windows 8 computer you will need to disable SecureBoot before you can boot a CD/DVD.

If you needed to take it back to the fresh install state, you would boot the WinPE disk and restore the image to the drive. Even if your drive failed, you could put a new drive in, boot the WinPE disk and recover the image. You would be back in minutes instead of hours.

I upgraded to Windows 10 a while back. Every time I open the computer I get a pop-up notification telling me the USB device is unrecognized. I have no USB devices in any of my 3 USB ports.
I sent my computer in twice. No help. They just uninstalled everything and reinstalled everything and told me it should be fixed. It is not. I then went about updating every driver in my Device Manager. I uninstalled the Unknown USB Device and then updated
other drivers. Certain drivers (such as PCI Express Root Port #3 - 9C14) when updating would also reinstall the Unknown USB Device, which I would then uninstall and keep working down the list. At the end of updating EVERYTHING I scanned for hardware changes
and "found" the Unknown USB Device.
From what I can tell, and I know very little about this stuff, my computer can't name one of my USB ports. Since it can't figure out what it's called it can't download the proper driver for it. Since it can't download the proper driver it can't work properly.
The practical result from this is that one of my three USB ports does nothing when I put in any USB item (connect my android phone, thumb drive, presentation clicker, etc).
I've looked on tons of forums. My current thought is that if I can tell my computer what the deice is or download the right driver and tell my computer to use that driver for this device it should solve my issue. But I don't know how to know what the name
of the USB port should be (I imagine it woul... Read more

Hi,
I did a full backup using vista backup and recovery centre onto a seagate 160gb usb drive.  The backup completed successfully so I rebuilt the machine.

On trying to rebuild, I run bakup and restore center and it cant even see the drive (it can see the C partition, the E (recovery) partition and nothing else.  It doesnt see the D (Data Partition) or the USB device.)

Tried copying it to the E partition and forcing it to use it but get  backup location not found which is mentioned elsewhere as an issue with mediaid.bin.

any ideas, i now have a shiny sparkly new machine with no data on it.

The data is there in a compressed form but id much rather restore properly.

grateful for any help.

Cheers

I am running a Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service pack 2 with Core 2 duo E6750 @ 2.66 with 3.5 GB of RAM.
The problem I am experiencing is that while the computer is idle with nothing running at all. The CPU usage would still be running at ranging from 20 percent to 50 percent. And yes the System Idle Process stays around 99 to 95. This is where I got lost. I have not been able to eliminate this problem. It makes my computer lag like I've never seen before. Quite frustrating. Any help or advice would be greatly appriciated! Thank you.

I've absolutely tried everything that you guys have recommended or anything I could do myself. System restore. Ad-aware. Avast. As I am typing, I am running bitdefender online scan. Nothing has come up yet.

I hate Vista, I hate Windows 7 so now I have to put out a large amount of money for them because all my XP Pro's (I have three licences), are no good anymore? Microsoft, I just hate you!!!!! Jerks.
Anyhow, that's not my problem at the moment. I have been able to send e-mail with my Outlook Express but not receive any. It just sits there and groans, silently, and does nothing but time out and quit. I called my server and we tried everything to find the reason, IT came to only one conclusion, its Outlook Express that has the problem and now that I hear there are no longer any updates for XP, that's probably what the problem is. I noticed a change when I downloaded and installed their last updates. Now what?
I am sure I am gong to hear something I don't want to hear, but I do have the Pk 3, is there anything else I need to update off their website before they yank it off too.
Oh, forgot to add, I can get my mail off Cox Mail so have to go there to get my mail. spankyjo54

5 blue screens of death in 2 days. And now whenever I start up my computer, it takes forever to log on and usually freezes for about 3 minutes. How can I change this and stop this from happening? And is there any way of knowing what caused the blue screens of death?

A:Oh this is just great.

Hello youthedog4

about the blue screen of death
Try going to advanced option
reboot the computer
as the computer is booting press and hold your "F8 Key" which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Disable automatic restart on system failure" and press the Enter key.
Your system will attempt to restart normally, but when it crashes, it will not re-start. Instead, you will see a BSOD with error message.
Record the error message in full detail, and post in this thread.
or have you tried "Last known good configuration that worked"

Please let us know.

Thanks

Hey guys, I recently built a new pc and its all working great except..

whenever i turn off my desktop fan for instance it sends some kinda static or power surge to my usb hub which disconnects anything thats plugged in there then reconnects moments later.
It aint just my desktop fan that causes this, i also have a beer cooler at the other side of the room and whenever that resets itself to begin the cooling cycle it also disconnects/reconnects my usb hub

any ideas how i can fix this? and more importantly is it dangerous to my pc

forgot to mention my pc is plugged into a surge protector which in turn is plugged into a different outlet to my fan/fridge

any help would be great thx in advance

Well I am at my wit?s end.

I have an Acer Aspire 5601AWLMi laptop. Centrino Duo T2250 @ 1.73GHz. Windows XP Media Center SP2. Intel i945GM Northbridge. Intel 82801GHM Southbridge. 2GB DDR2 memory.

The laptop did not come with any O/S cd?s.

I use Norton Internet Security, Trend Micro Anti-Spyware and Windows Defender. I keep all programs updated. I have scheduled scans and I do manual scans as well; I have never had a virus or similar. I run Registry Mechanic about twice a month. I defragment every couple of months.

The laptop used to run wonderfully. It was very fast; it was sometimes faster than my HP desktop of about the same age with twice the RAM. Then the change. It was not a gradual change; it was sudden. From the time you push the power button to full desktop (including completing password screen) used to take around 30 seconds; it now takes almost 10 minutes. No, I am not exaggerating when I say 10 minutes. It boots so slowly and struggles so badly that even the Windows 4-note ?chime? at boot sounds broken up and takes much longer to play than it should. If you try to do something as simple as open a blank Word document or open My Documents folder or similar at any point in the first 10 minutes, it will open (hopefully) within a minute. There were no changes (hardware, software etc) to the laptop at or near the time of the change.

I did not expect much help from the Geek Squad at Best Buy but decided to give them the $60.00 to run diagnostic... Read more

Hi guys,

I just bought a SSD for my computer (GSkill FalconII 64gb) and I am having problems with Windows in general on it. Firstly, my graphics in games have been really framey (laggy..) as to when I was running it off my 500GB OS drive. I run my games off that drive anyway, but still get lag. I have reinstalled my 4850 drivers and only have seen little improvement. I have made CCC settings all to Optimal performance, and still am getting frame-skipping lag. Also, when in games, my computer will just randomly hang now and then. Why would this be?
Thanks in advance

Having had some time to evaluate 8.1, these are the four features that I appreciate the most:

1) The ability to keep the same wallpaper / background on both the desktop screen and Start Screen. This is significant because previously, it seemed like you were making a jarring transition from one OS to a completely different OS any time you went from one screen to the other. Now, the same background on both screens makes you feel like you're still using the same OS.
2) I like the tweaks they've done to the Mail app. For instance, if there's a link in an email, and you click on it, it opens a second window with whatever app that the link needs (web browser, photo viewer, etc.).
3) The tiles on the Start Screen are much easier to move around. Under 8.0, I had to press my finger hard on my laptop's touch screen to move them. Now, a gentle touch-and-hold works.
4) The ability to have more tile sizes is appreciated. It just makes the screen look nicer.

A:Win 8.1: Four Great Features

1) Better SkyDrive integration
2) Refined Metro search engine
3) On-screen keyboard
4) Redesigned Store (much prettier)
5) New apps (Sound recorder, new calculator, alarms, Health & Fitness, Food & Drink...)
6) IE11

I personally believe Emsisoft is a great product, and I feel confident it offers a high degree of protection to my computers.  Nevertheless, I am becoming more and more annoyed at the frequency I must reboot my computers to allow Emsisoft to "update core components".  I currently have three computers running Emsisoft Security Suite, and three other computers running Kaspersky Internet Security.  No offence to Emsisoft, but when my licenses expire on those computers, they will all be switched to Kaspersky.  Both products, in my humble opinion, are equally capable of offering superior protection.  I honestly hope Emsisoft will eventually improve their update methods, but until that time, I honestly don't have the patience to deal with it.  End of rant!

A:Emsisoft is great - BUT

Are you using EAM or EIS? EIS usually requires more restarts because of the additional firewall module - that, and it cannot overwrite files that are in use. (I get more restarts than the average person, but I am not complaining)

A:HELP!! great fps, then bad frames

Almost sounds like an over heating problem.

Reguardless of what the temps say, or what the problem is, I usually suspect some piece of hardware as over heating if the following is true:

The problem is predictable to the extent that you always seems to encounter it within 5 to 15 minutes or so of using some particular app.

Rebooting helps for a moment but the problem comes back usually sooner than the first time.

A fresh boot after a few hours of the machine being powered down seems to give the problem more time before surfacing.

These are some of the indicators that something is over heating. Could be a cpu, gpu, psu, chipset, hdd etc.

I've seen problems like strange characters suddenly appearing across the screen. Jerky graphics during a game every 10 or 20 seconds. machine freezes during restart on POST screen.

The one thing these problems all had in common, besides being related to overheating, were that they all initially appeared to be something else. The strange characters were thought to be a faulty video card which actually turned out to be a dying cpu fan. the jerky graphics were thought to be a memory resident program interfering turned out to be a hot gpu, and the post freeze was thought to be a bad cpu turned out to be an incorrect jumper that set the core voltage too high on the cpu.

Just for kicks, try running a game or two with the side of your case open and see if the problem takes a bit longer to occur. Some hardware can get just enough more c... Read more

Hi Guys,

I've already read some great stuff on here that has helped me come to terms with Win 8 Pro.

I've just installed it on Desktop and for me most people seem to have the same reluctance that followed other major Windows Updates. I feel it's just a case of getting to grips with the new appearance as much as anything.

I'm already starting to like it.......

Advice needed though on the following:

Where can I find a Help/User Guide. I just want to do some simple stuff like locking the location of my tiles. At the mo when I add a new one the others move around at random to make space for it. I'm a tidy person and want my tiles that I use most right in front of me.

Is there a central location for apps, where I can browse and select ones that might benefit my PC usage.

Finally I had to take off my ESET Anti Virus because it seemed to be conflicting big time after I upgraded from Win 7 (I couldn't access the Internet). I think I read somewhere that Win 8 Pro had a very good built in Anti V. Is this true and if so where can I find info.

Cheers and keep up the good work!

A:Windows 8 Looks great but....

As far as I know you can't lock the tile location. And as you have discovered moving them around and organizing them can be a royal pain. You can Pin and unpin Apps from the Metro screen so only your most used Apps are on the main screen. Right clicking the Metro screen will get you an all apps option at the bottom of the screen. All installed apps will show up there. To get more go to the store by launching the store app. While on the Metro screen just type help and the search feature will launch. Moussing to the lower right corner of the screen will bring up the charms bar, and there is a search option there. Windows 8 comes with Microsoft Security Essentials/Defender pre installed. You should see an Icon for it in control panel.

Not sure what you mean when you say when i log on with my laptop all images load well

How much RAM do you have?

What antivirus are you using?

Do you have Norton System Works installed?

A:ok you guys did such a great job with the lap can you help me with this log?

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools>Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked, and that there is no check in 'Hide file extensions for known file types' or 'Hide protected operating system files'.

In Windows XP, the search engine feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane of the Search Window, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

Please download Ad-aware at http://www.lavasoftusa.com/ and install it if you don't have it already. Make sure it's the newest version and check for any updates before running it. Also go to http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/...2cleaner.shtm... Read more

You can have a great video card in your PC, but it will probably outlive its cooling fan by several years.
Well, this has been my own experience anyway.
And then finding a replacement fan for a specific video card is like finding hen's teeth. Good luck!

Well some time ago, I found a better alternative.
I've been saving CPU cooling fans since the 386 days and I've finally found a use for them, as replacement GPU coolers.

Here's a few of my GPU fan fixes:

This was my first fan transplant, on my old Winfast Video Card. It's ten years old and still running Great.

And, my second one, an Nvidea 230 card in my current PC. The tiny little fan was getting really noisy,
so it had to go.

And just yesterday, a Dell Video card that came with NO fan at all, but just one LARGE heatsink.
After just a few minutes of operation, that heatsink would be way too hot to touch. Ouch!
So I wanted to really keep it cool, so I found a fan from an old PC that I had just scrapped out.
A great little fan, with Ball-Bearing motor, moves a lot of air and makes a great cooler for this Dell
video card. The card already had the power socket for a fan, so I used it to connect the fan.

So for me, a failed GPU cooling fan, or no fan at all, is just a small bump in the road, so to speak.

I hope this will inspire some DIY guys to do a quick fix to their own video card, when the fan fails.
It doesn't have to be pretty, but it does have to work.

Happy Holidays!

Gotta share this with you--if you don't already know about it:
http://www.magicjack.com/4/index.asp This is a very small piece of hardware, once configured correctly, will allow you to call anywhere in the US and Canada, I think--any time of the day or night. FOR FREE!!!
I had read about it in a computer magazine and forgot about it until just a few days ago. Paid $45 including shipping for it. Each year hereafter, the annual charge is only $20. I have just called several friends/family for FREE. Take it with you when you go away and it will work on ANY XP, or later, that is running a broadband connection and has a USB. A good find, I think and has a 30 day free trial.

Why it's great:
People are too stupid to manage their windows. I know I am overwhelmed when I have too many windows open, and I'm definitely better at using computers than most people. I know you don't want to admit it, but YOU cannot handle having many windows open either.

Window chrome wastes space. It is also hard to arrange multiple windows onscreen at the same time.

The lack of flashy looks makes text and buttons slightly faster to identify.

Why I will never use it:
HTML/Javascript is NOT a first class language:For example, the version of cut the rope completely rapes an atom/equivalent CPU, while the native version runs smoothly on the slower iPad. If microsoft is pushing HTML5/Javascript, EVERYTHING it says about battery life is COMPLETE BULL.

Windows RT lacks features:If it's impossible to write a good browser in it, then there are critical features missing from the runtime.

Not open:Every metro app needs to come through the store. I oppose this out of principle, and it's also practically bad. Maybe I have portable apps or something.

Normal programs don't run in it:100% of the programs I use do not have a metro version. Most probably never will. Microsoft could have made existing programs work with the metro switcher(windows are resizeable), and I would probably have used it on my tablet then.

Can't have 2 of the same thing side by side:like 2 web pages or email messages.

Can't run things in the background:What i want to download a torrent? What ... Read more

A:Why metro is great, and why I won't use it at all

Totally agree with you on that, i never have 2 windows side by side, unless doing a comparison of 2 images.

How does virus Work?

A:The Great Virus

A Virus is a man-made program (small bits of programming code disguised as something else or buried in other codes) that causes an unexpected and usually undesirable event. A virus can replicate itself and is designed to automatically spread to other computer users. Viruses can be transmitted through email attachments, downloads or removable media such as CDs, DVDs, or USB drives. Depending on the maliciousness and skill of the virus creator, the damage caused by a virus will vary. Some viruses will spread its viral code into other programs, corrupt, modify or even erase files. Some viruses wreak their effect as soon as their code is executed while other viruses lie dormant until circumstances cause their code to be executed by the computer. Viruses are usually classified by various criteria to include origin, techniques, types of files they infect, where they hide, kind of damage they cause, etc.All about VirusesViruses 101To fully understand what a virus does, you need to understand there are many other types of malware and that they differ from each other.Glossary of Malware Related TermsMalware, viruses, what are they? by Tigzy, Developer of RogueKiller

I do a load of cut and paste and needed to extend the C & V functions. I found Clipmate http://www.thornsoft.com/ which has no limitations.

There is a closed post in the forum from someone who couldn't figure out how to use the drop down option but it really is super simple.

What I like about it is you can have multi folders to store a variety of permanent clips. Another thing I find really neat is that you can open the magnifier window and give each clip a name making it easier to recover and paste stored data which can be as lengthy as you want.

Just in case it might be helpful................

PC: Homemade 64bit components

Hi guys about 4 weeks ago i reinstalled windows due to my vista being corrupt, i formatted the hardrive and everything seemed fine. When i woke up this morning and turned my pc on it said that windows failed to log me on because it couldnt access the event log.Now i looked in the event viewer and clicked on the error and it said this:

The LoadUserProfile call failed with the following error:
An I/O operation initiated by the registry failed unrecoverably. The registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the registry.

Now when i clicked the look online help button at bottom of page i did all that it said to do and restarted my pc and same problem persists. i have run a virus scan 2 times today and i have run a spybot scan today and there is nothing there.

I really would like some help in resolving this issue ASAP as my computer will corrupt again if its not sorted soon.

anyhelp please?

A:Looking to buy new RAM stick, help would be great.

Hello, welcome to the boards. You will need to know more about the type of memory you have. You will have to know the speed of it ( Ex: PC3200 ) and what type it is ( DDR, DDR2 , etc..). You can either look in your BIOS of your computer or download Everest home edition at http://www.lavalys.hu/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en ( the hyper link button didnt work for some reason.) hope this helps.

Ever since I started using Firefox I don't pick up on spyware stuff. Using Internet Explorer I always picked up more than a dozen items each and every time I was on the net. My computer came with Spy Sweeper and it could never detect more than 2 or 3 of those things. Ad-Aware solved that problem. I have also been lucky with the Flock browser. Haven't picked up anything while using it. I did pick up stuff using Opera. Don't like it. I find it s-l-o-w.

Anyone with an older P4 or dual core PC with motherboard graphics, I found a deal on brand new Radeon HD 4550 graphics cards for $8.00 delivered. I think that's here in the U.S. unfortunately, but this is the right card for those machines. I know this isn't the right forum, but I am posting here for the benefit you guys who frequent this forum (and anyone else) with an older PC such as a few of the ones I have here. It needs a DVI->VGA or HDMI->VGA adapter to be used VGA, but can't beat the price for a new card. It also has a tower bracket, so it's not for small form factor PCs. Looks like the bracket can be changed out, though.

I have a 4350 in a dual core that I put in it when I got an r7 240 for the PC that had that card, and that made a ton of difference. That's why I decided to post this here. BTW, card only uses 20w max in case anyone is worried about power issues...

Here's the listing title:

NEW ATI Radeon HD 4550 512MB PCIe Display Port DVI Graphics Card Dell 3Y14F

Just got one of these today, and I plan to drop it in an older dual core W7 PC, to use for testing various things. Got it in a HP 6200 with an i5 and motherboard graphics for now, and it's for sure better now that I added the AMD site driver...

Well for me, I decided to nuke my XP install again and start from scratch. I reinstalled XP by choosing "delete existing windows installation (press L)". Then I installed all my software drivers and whatnot. After that, I went to windows update where I got that massive SP2 update (75meg download!), understandably big. I appreciate the help you all have offered. I started to see an increase in spyware on this computer which I don't normally use until now, so I'm not sure on everything on here. This morning as I signed on, Norton informed me that I had the virus Bloodhound.Exploit.6 (exact name?) I searched Google for the virus and it seems I'm not the only one. The virus has symptoms of not being able to open "My Computer", "My Documents", "Control Panel" etc. without Windows Explorer shutting down on me. The people with the problem ran HiJackThis and apparently were relieved of the virus. So any help with the virus and any annoying adware issues would be much appreciated. Thank you in advance.

P.S. I can not get Half Life 2 to open or CounterStrike: Source. If this is from the virus can you let me know, thanks.

One more thing. I'd like to clean the whole Hard Drive up, so if it looks like there is a program that someone who HATES spyware and pop-ups would not use please add it to the list to delete. Once again, thank you for the help. You guys are a life saver.
