Hi Joukowski,

Welcome to TSG!

I am not a networking expert, but I think you will need a wireless router and a wireless adapter for your notebook if it does not already have one (being a wifi notebook, it may already have one) .

As I understand it, the broadband modem connects between the wall and the router, and the home computer may be connected by ethernet cable to one of the router ports in the back, while the router talks over the wifi adapter to the notebook somewhere else in the home.

The router will assign local IP address numbers, while your ISP will assign an IP address for your broadband modem.

With broadband, you should never be c... Read more

not sure if this is the section to be asking this but how do i increase the speed of my cpu fan? since i got my new video card, power supply and ram it seems to be running at a higher tempature. is there a program i need?

A:quick question

First read your manual; specifically the part about bios menus/options. You may have a smart fan option. Disabling this will make the fan run at full rated speed. Note different board makers call this option by various names; smart fan, Qfan, etc.

If the fan is rated at a given RPM such as 3000rpm, you are not going to make it turn faster. You may need to replace the hsf with a higher performance unit.

Howdy,

Yesterday I bought myself a new Gateway GT5028 ( http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/5876/5876sp3.shtml ) and I'm wondering if the RAM from my old computer is compatible with my new computer.

Apparently my computer is currently using "1024 MB 533 MHz (PC4200) DDR2 memory (two 512 MB modules)"

The other two 512 MB ram chips I have are made by Elixir and Spectek.

I found the the model of the Elixir ram on Elixirs website and here's the links to my specific ram that I have from my old computer:

http://www.elixir-memory.com/products/file/Elixir-DDR1 256Mb Die B Draco UDIMM-R2.2.pdf

and this Spectek ram I can't find any documentation on. Their site is terrible. From the ram itself I can gather this much: 512 MB PC2700 DDR PC33 and it's obviously the same pin-format as the elixir.

So, my question is, can my new computer accept this ram in addition to the ram it came with?

Thanks,

Bobby

The reason I think they're better than others, first, is that they use amd socket 939 cpus, which are the best for gaming, and that they have good performance with the new nvidia t force chipset, plus the one that's released has some overclocking options, while the yet to be released board has more oc'ing options.

I'm not sure if it'd be worth it or not.

I need to know whether or not I can use the OS on a HDD which was in a prebuilt computer for an upgrade. I would be keeping the HDD because there is nothing wrong with it and it has all of my data on it. The parts I would be replacing would be the motherboard, CPU, Case, and RAM. I'd be keeping the sound card, HDD, Optical drive, and GPU (yes, it works fine).

A:Quick Question.

Once you replace the motherboard, that ends the use of that operating system while there are times a call to Microsoft and a "sob story" may get some sympathy, legally the answer is no. Now a retail version of Windows, that you bought if it is a retail version is another story but the code in it carries whether it is oem (original equipment manufacturer) or retail.

I have a new HD that was given to me as a gift..It's a IDE HD and my PC is built with a SATA HD. What steps should I take to add the IDE HD to my system? I have cables of all sorts. Just want to check my thoughts with others.. Thanks.

A:Quick HD Question..

Make sure the BIOS is set to boot off the sata drive before any ide drives. Then just plug it in, your motherboard likely still has 1 place to plug in an IDE drive, probably the CD/DVD. I'd set the CD DVD drive to Slave and set the hard drive to Master, but it really doesn't matter so long as one is Master and the other is Slave. You 'can' use Cable Select (CS) but I don't like to recommend that way.

If you don't have any IDE controllers on the motherboard you can buy an IDE controller card to go in a free PCI slot.

If you don't have any free PCI slots you can buy an external enclosure and toss the drive in there and connect through USB or Firewire.

Okay.. wasn't sure where to put this question.
I'm going to be getting a second chord for my DSL, I have two computers and would like both of them to be net worthy.
My old computer has an ethernet card and all that..
My question is, should I just be able to plug in the chord, and go through the normal set up I did for the computer that is already on DSL? Or is there some networking thing I have to do as well? I would want to be able to use both of them at once on occasion, as this is a multi person household, and people get annoyed when another person asks to either a- check email b- look up things for games.. etc etc.

first thing, you will be needing a router to setup your very own home network. A router is advisable as this will give your computers the same internet speed. so basically internet goes into the router. both computer connect to the router. same speed on both pc's unlike a hub where the speed gets divided.

I have a usb drive with the files to allow me to boot my laptop so i can boot from my disc.
So i was thinking that i should format the drive and When its done turn off my computer. So then i would have 2 formatted hard drives. Then plug in my usb and put the windows disk in and continue to install xp on the desired drive. What do you guys think.

Let me see if I have this right. You want to boot from an external USB drive?

A:Quick question about RAM

In theory they should work perfectly, in practice they often don't. It all depends on your mobo and what chipset it uses and how it was designed.

I used to use an MSI 745Ultra with 2x 256 pc 2100 and 1x 512 pc 2100 and it worked fine provided the 256's were in slots 1 and 2 and the 512 was in slot 3. But ram was slower back then.

Hey guys,
I had a quick question. I was running bio shock 2 on full screen and on the highest detail and everything maxed out! My cpu temps went from like 37C to a 66C. The game wasn't lagging at all and everything was still perfect. My question is if it's normal for those temperatures to go so high when running a very high end game on high end graphics. Thanks

A:Quick question

From my limited knowledge, it is quite possible for such a processor/graphics hungry application to cause such temperature rises. 66oC is getting towards the critical temperature point when you might consider upgrading the cooling system in your PC; you don't really want to run hardware over 70oC - this can simply be a matter of replacing the main fan with one with a higher specification, as close as possible in size. There are some good examples going 2nd hand on ebay if money's a bit tight!

So, i got my highspeed connection hooked up here (DSL) and I have 3 comps hooked up to a router with the dsl modem hooked up to the router as well. So basically the comps connect through the router wich connects to the modem.

I was told that a router works best because it regenerates the signal rather than just diving it amongst the computers. I didnt really wana do any research on it cuz i was just looking for a quick answer.

If all three comps are running and surfing the web, will that mean 1 comp will have higher speeds than the other or are all connected at the same speed (if so is it the highest speed or is it divided amongst 3 comps).

I guess i will look it up after all.
I'd appreciate some help

I'm not sure what you mean by this. You don't need to launch Internet Explorer to connect to the internet - you can simply launch Mozilla Firefox and you're good to go.

Glad to hear it. I suggest downloading and installing all available updates from Microsoft for additional fixes of bugs, security patches, etc.

As for being able to revert back, yes, you can. You would have a couple options: 1) Perform a System Restore 2) Disable IE9 through Programs and Features.

I'm converting a bunch of DVD files to MKV and expect it to take quite a bit of time. My 8yr old daughter has her own user account, and uses the computer a lot for school and games, and obviously I don't want her to accidentally disturb the running task.. If I switch from my user account to hers, will the task on my account keep running, or will it suspend until I log back on again?

Thanks..

A:Quick Question...

Code:
If you click the Switch User button, all active programs and network connections will continue to run (the session remains active), and you will return to the Welcome screen, where other users can log on. The user's session will remain active until the computer is restarted or the user is logged off of the session.
I will test it real quick starting a clean of some sort.

That is an advanced setting on enterprise level routers not home routers. Also your connection is only as fast as your wireless adapter and ethernet cards.

Hello
I have just bought a new laptop with windows 8 and actually quite like the tile setup!
Some programs I need to use are on the desktop and I regularly need to switch between desktop and start screen views. All I want to do is have an on screen 'windows button' that will take me from the desktop back to the start screen with a click of the mouse, as opposed to having to physically push the keyboard button.
I know this is ultimately lazy, but surely it should be simple and sometimes a mouse click is just so much easier than pushing the button!
Thanks everyone
Mark

A:Quick question!

Hello Mark, and welcome to Eight Forums.

You could use step 2 or step 3 in the tutorial to also quickly open the Start screen from the desktop. Step 2 is for a Start button.
"Start" Screen - Open in Windows 8

If you like, you could also use a Start screen shortcut I created that could be pinned or used where you like in addition to the above.
"Start" Screen Shortcut - Create in Windows 8

Hope this helps,

Right now I'm running xp home, i'm going to get xp pro soon. my questions are:

1. Is it true that xp home doesn't allow you to use a floppy drive?
2. Does xp pro allow floppy drives?
3. Is it true that you don't have to register xp pro and you can reinstall it over and over again?

as for question 1 & 2 I have a floppy drive installed that only works in dos mode. It shows up on xp as working, but won't allow the drive to read.

thanks for any info.

i just downloaded avast and did a scan on my computer. whenever it finds something in the windows folder it will ask "are you sure you want to delete this file in the windows folder" which makes me nervous to delete it even though it finds it as a trojan. is there a way i can be sure that it is a bad file and not something i need? thanks

A:quick question

Instead of deleting it, quarantine it.
That way, if it turns out to be something you need, you can go back and restore it.
If you have no problems after a couple of weeks, delete it.

A:Quick ram question

I'm not sure what you mean by crosshair. Are you asking if your current set of memory would work with the same type, only a smaller capacity? If so, then yes, the memory will work fine together, all assuming your motherboard is capable of using that much memory.

On another note, are you really sure you are doing something with the computer that will utilize 20 GB of memory?

I say May since Attachments are only allowed on some forums.

As to Your question. If You use no AVG products that would be an indicator of possible Spam. You could ask AVG if they are running such a promotion and if so and interested do it Via their website.

What is the name of the little square plug with the (removal) arm, similar to a (UK) phone socket plug, but smaller and squarer (ususally clear plastic) - primarily used to plug a 56kb modem into your PC? You know the ones! Them things! What are they called?

It's just that we have a crappy old terminal at work and the keyboard uses one of these plugs to connect to it (as opposed to a PS2 or serial plug), and the keyboard is goosed. Hello all....for my classes I converted the pages into printed PDF pages so I can have the book as an ebook but when I try to do OCR recognition within PDF it says "Acrobat could not perform recognition (OCR) on this page because: This page has graphics other than images or text on it. It cannot be captured"

To go around this; I want to do a "fake scan" or scan it from the PDF files themselves rather than scan the pages on an actual scanner (since I have the files already on PDF on my computer) so I can then do the OCR text recognition. Does anyone know a way to do this?

Im not very technical with pc's. Im jus wondering if power supplies are standard and fit any computer case. There aren't different sizes are they? Im buying an Antec 430w TruePower PSU. Also i was wondering are PSU's extremely hard to fit, or are they ok to install? The only reason im buying one is becuase this one ive got at current is powerman 250w, and im buying a new vid card soon, so i want a PSU higher than 250w.

Cheers for help

A:Quick PSU Question

As long as your PSU and case follow the same standard, then you are okay. That Antec PSU (nice PSU btw) you are trying to get follows the ATX standard. So if you have an ATX case, all is swell.

If you have an OEM computer such as from Dell, etc., they may have non-standard motherboards, case, and/or PSU. So an ATX PSU may not work correctly.

You didn't post the new log. Anyway once the system is clean steps need to be taken to make it harder for that crap to get installed. If you simply went through the removal process without taking preventive steps..you'll get it all back in a matter of days. Please read through the spyware prevention section on how to protect yourself from spyware/adware Here

Take heed...and use the programs and methods recommended.

I am just curious about something (Learning about RAM )

What would perform better?

1x 2gb DDR2 6400 800mhz

OR

2x 2gb DDR2 6400 in dual channel BUT limited to 400mhz by motherboard

Trying to decide if its better to buy a new motherboard because this one limits my ram to 400mhz or get some more ram to improve pc performance. I will be buying both but only have enough money for one option right now and id rarther buy RAM so i have some of my money spare to buy ARMA 2.

Buying a new mobo will cost a lot more because i would also have to buy a SATA hard drive.

I have a Q6600 quadcore and a 8800GTS btw if that makes any difference.

Thanks,

Unless I'm corrected by someone, video drivers, are the language your video card speaks back to the OS. Your O/S speaks a "language" and the drivers make the conversation much more understandable to the video card.

Is there really that much difference between the speed of an Athlon quad and a Phenom quad?

The two I'm comparing are
Athlon
Phenom

Besides the 0.2GHz, are they really that different, I'm presuming the phenom may be better for gaming and stuff like that?
If not, couldn't you just overclock the Athlon and save some cash? Much appreciated

A:Just a quick question..

The Phenom II's have a L3 cache of 4MB or 6MB while the Athlon II's do not have a L3 cache at all, they also use different cores.
