Can't get my system past the desktop page

Q: Can't get my system past the desktop page

Hello,

This is my first time posting a question any time any where so please bare with me.

I am running my computer with windows XP. I cannot get it to get past the main page (desktop) when I go down to the task bar where it says START i get an hour glass. I cannot click on any of my desk top Icons and have them do anything and I cannot go into the start menu. I have tried control, shift, escape to see if I can run off a cd this could be of help if a cd is needed to fix the problem. I did try to boot the computer off of a disk thinking perhaps I had a virus (I still think that might be the problem) but I was unable to do this. I reset the boot to start from disk and when it started in dos and gave me my 4 choices I chose boot from disk then it said press f1 or f2 to continue. I pressed F1. when I had the Norton anti-virus disk in there it gave me the choice for normal startup or start up from disk. I tried to choose start up from disk but it wouldn't let me. I tried this several times with 2 different versions all with the same result. My 30 seconds ran out and it started up normally and then got stuck on the desk top page. I tried the same boot with the windows XP disk hoping that it might have a diagnostic bit to it, but no luck I chose boot form disk and it still went to the desk top page and got stuck. Anyone with any information or suggestions on what I might do would be greatly appreciated. I would hate to think that I will have to take it in somewhere only to have them wipe my drive. I have e-mails on there that are very precious to me and if for nothing else I would like to keep those besides have a computer I can use!! I do have some sense as to how things work even though I don't always understand how it happens or what I actually did. So, if you could explain in not too techie language I should be able to get it!! Thank you so much in advance to whomever tried to help me, you are already greatly appreciated!! Lisa

Hello, my daughter has a Dell Inspiron B120 with Windows XP. The problem is after user log in the windows closes and returns to log in page. Sometimes I see the desktop background for a few seconds, then for a fraction of a second I see a box that says "PC Protector" is turned off. I do not recognize this box. Then windows closes and returns to log in page. Most of the time windows closes before it opens. I have disabled "automatic restart", tried every "safe mode" option in f8, tried to boot start up disk to repair, each time it goes to log in page, back to the vicious circle. I am fairly convinced a virus is involved but cannot get to the anti virus (webroot) to scan it. She has some pictures that have not been backed up that she wants to save, but, I don't know if I can even re-download the OS if I cannot boot the start up disk. Thanks,

when i open firefox it goes to the firefox/google search engine perfectly. when i type something in and click search, the status bar shows up like its gonna do something for a couple of minutes but then don't. i can go to some of my websites with the dropdown at the address bar but not all. the ones i can go to load perfectly and i can go anywere in the website. i can go to almost any search engine except yahoo. once i get there it does the same thing, it acts like its gonng do something when i click search but doesn't. also sometimes a tab pops up automaticly with a system error fix website and a spyware type message pops up and says that i need to clean my system. adult friend finder pops up sometimes too. it kinda alternates between the two. i have norton 360 and it says that i have no viruses, spyware, or malware. it did say that i did have some browser vunerability threats or attacks or whatever but norton fixes all of that stuff automaticly and it said it fixed it. internet explorer runs slow on my system cause tabs keep opening automaticly trying to open but saying error 404 or something, page not found anyway. does norton support firefox or do you have to configure that yourself? it started messing up when i had xp sp2 but i was switching to vista so i didn't pay it any mind, now i did a clean install with vista and its doing the same thing and i haven't even had it installed for a week yet. will tweaking firefox mess it up in any way? i believe its a virus problem b... Don't click on any links in the spyware tabs or 'adult friend finder' popups. It looks like you could be infected. Norton 360 might be saying you're safe, but I wouldn't trust it.

Please follow these instructions (5 pages) and post the requested logs in a new thread here.

I have read the 'must read' section but it is of no use because...........
I am trying to get my daughter's lap top running.
She is running Vista and office 2007 on a Toshiba Satelite L300-1AS.
Turn on is good, but after that the login requester takes her to an advice block the explroer.exe could not locate PROMPROF.exe and that reinstallment could fix this.

I can get to the start up info through f2 and the f12 buttons.
Will resetting the system defaults wipe her details from the system, she has university stuff that she would rather not lose if possible.

I am using a HP Pavilion 763N with Windows XP (home version) and hoping someone can help me! I detected a virus on my computer with PC cillin---I tried to clean the file but it was not successful and the file was deleted. As a result there were major problems with my computer. I attempted to use the "recovery system" and everything looked like it was proceeding well. When the computer was restarted after the Windows logo page I received a series of screens regarding registration and set up (just like I did when I first got my computer). I proceeded through all screens and at the end am supposed to click "Finish". When I do that the computer whirs like it is thinking and processing but nothing happens! I can reboot and reboot and still get that screen. Even in safe mode I can't get beyond that screen. I am not able to get task manager with cntrl/alt/delete and I am not able to get the start up bar with cntrl/esc. In short I can't get to anything on the computer....what can I do???? I can't even figure out how to get back to the control panels so that I can attempt "re-recovery"! Any help appreciated!

I have a Dell Dimension 4300 desktop. Until last night, I was having trouble doing anything on my computer. After start up, my outdated version of Norton would pop up saying a virus was found. I couldn't get anything else to respond and the window would never go away. So I eventually got it to stop, and the I ran various spyware, registry, and anti-virus utilities to the point where my computer was working flawlessly.

Then I decided that I would just uninstall Norton (since I installed a new anti-virus program). I hadn't updated it in over a year and I never really liked it anyway. It took over an hour to remove (I think because the quarantine folder was so large). I chose to remove everything including the quarantine folder. After the uninstall successfully completed, I restarted the computer. I got to the Windows XP user selection screen (I have 5 users set up) and tried to select my user profile, but I couldn't click on it. I tried selecting each of the 5 users I have set up, but none of them work. It just seems frozen.

Did I screw up by uninstalling every last bit of Norton? Did deleting the quarantine folder release viruses back onto my system? Is there anything I can do at this point to at least get into Windows so I can run a new virus scan?

Well, the HDD diagnostic usually doesn't lie. So, there is a great chance the power outage took out your HDD. There is also a great chance the CMOS battery needs to be changed. What is the make and model # of your HDD?
To confirm if the HDD has failed your can download the ISO image for Seatools in my signature. Burn the image to CD with IMGBurn also in my signature. Boot off of the newly created CD and run the short and long tests on the drive. If either test fails the HDD needs to be replaced.

Yesterday my computer froze and I tried to fix it by removing all power sources. When I tried to turn it on again a white and blue screen popped up with a bunch of settings I search up on youtube how to get past this settings page then my screen went black for about 5 minutes when it turned back on its still black but it says reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key. I keep trying to restart my computer by eliminating all power sources and starting a back up again and collecting f 2 and F 10. I even tried doing ctrl alt delete but everytime i click it it just freezes my screen. And everytime i click f2 or f10 the same message keeps popping up reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press any key. This has never happened before. This is on my Asus laptop that is on A8 vision AMD and it's running on Windows 10. I have also tried opening up the bottom and taking out my hard drives and putting them back in. On booting up, my Windows XP Home does not load past the "Welcome" page. In other words, it only boots up to my user account icons. When I press any of my user account icons, it then loads the usual "Welcome" page with your personal user icon and doesn't load any further, just sitting on that page. If I do a Control/Alt/Delete, next to the account user icon it says, "loading your personal settings", but nothing loads, it just stays on that "Welcome" page.

This is a problem because I can't get into any of my files/tools/etc to do anything about it. In other words, I appear to be locked out.

I am thinking it may be a virus/worm/etc because my McAfee Security anti-virus is way out of date, but I regularly clean up with Adaware and other windows devices. My 60G hard drive has about 14% free space. I take it I can't even reformat or save any files that I need?
I pressed F8, got the black screen, scrolled up to "Safe Mode" pressed enter.

A list of files started loading up......it then goes to the coloured Windows user account screen. I choose "Administrator" icon... it goes to a black screen with "safe mode" written in all four screen corners with one line at top reading: "Microsoft (R) Windows XP (R) (Build 2600.xpsp-sp2..........Service Pack 2)
but nothing further comes up.

Hi,
newby here to the forums.
My nephew has a 1 yr old Toshiba satellite pc with windows 7. After clicking the "ON" button, the pc will only load the TOSHIBA startup screen- over and over. I can try F12 and get options of
LAUNCH STARTUP REPAIR [recommended]
START WINDOWS NORMALLY
the Startup repair does nothing but load the Toshiba startup screen and to TRY to start normally does the same.
F8 - for Safe Mode - does same as above
- safe mode with networking [on a home network] same as above
- start with command prompt-- command prompt window does NOT open
get this message---"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change may be the cause of the problem"

clicking F12 [when toshiba first appears on screen] does nothing but right back to
this message---"Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change may be the cause of the problem"
no matter how I try to boot, I get the same window which is the startup window for toshiba, -or for a troubleshooting mode goes to the 'windows failed to start normally' message.
I don't have a start menu or any options because it will only do one of the above 2 options. Can someone tell me if there is some troubleshooting steps to take or is there a hard drive failure?
Thanks to forums such as this one, and geek squad, I have always successfully been able to figure out my pc problems, but I am at a total blank with this one.

Hello and welcome to TSF.

It does sound like the hard drive is on its way out. I recommend backing up any necessary files before we do anything else.

The first thing to do is find out if the hard drive is physically in working condition. Download, burn and run SeaTools for DOS: SeaTools para DOS | Seagate

Burn the CD and boot the laptop from it. Run the long test on the hard drive and hope for the best. Let us know the results.

Best of luck.

Eversince the summer.. my computer has been freezing ever so often. Before it freezes, you can hear a distinctive sound like a PLUCK sound. Then after a few seconds, it freezes.

Two nights ago, my computer turned off by itself, so when I restarted it, I get a page which basically says that my computer has a problem turning on and for me to either choose

Safe Mode
Safe Mode with something something
Safe Mode with another something something.

Last Know Configuaration that worked

Start Normally
I have gone through all of them and non of them successfully started.

After I selected Safe Mode (all three of the options did this) a list of files were listed.. and it would go on to a blank screen and then I would hear the PLUCK sound and it would restart to the page above.

The rest of the selections would get to the Windows XP home page and then restart itself.. so it basically won't start.
Did my computer crash..?
I don't have the system disk.. because that got lost when I moved. Is there any other way of fixing this problem?
Thanks In advance.

I just bought an SSD to soup up my Dell Precision M4400 laptop. The laptop came with W7x64pro, so it should work, but I have the strangest problem I've ever encountered, and I've searched high and low but cannot find anything about this particular install problem. Basically, I cannot click to accept the license terms and so I cannot get past that page.

I can get it to boot from the W7x64pro install DVD. Using the mouse I can setup language prefs, and I can click "Install now". So steps 1-4 here Clean Install Windows 7 are no problem. I get stuck in step 5.

The problem comes on the license term page, where I can move the mouse around, but it won't take any clicks. I cannot scroll the license terms, and I cannot click to check the "I accept the license terms" check-box. The first time I click the check-box, its focus goes way, but that is all that happens. I also cannot do Alt-a to accept the license terms. I'm totally stuck here!

I have tried several times with different language settings, including the default English (US), but to no avail. I get stuck on the license term.

I have installed W7x64pro from this DVD on another computer with no problem. I also have the same problem on the laptop when trying to install W7x86pro from another DVD, so the DVD is not the problem.

I also tried different mice, but with the same result. So the mouse is not the problem.

Any ideas anyone?

A:Clean install, but cannot get past accept license terms page...

It almost has to be the installer. Download the latest from the link in this tutorial and burn to DVD using the tool given, then follow these steps to get a perfect Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7.

Unplug all other HD's and peripherals. Use the touchpad, then try a wired mouse - PS2 if port is available.

If that fails, reset your BIOS to defaults. Set SATA controller to AHCI.

If that fails, try writing the latest ISO to flash stick using Download tool given.

Firstly, I have to explain I am very inexperianced in all things computing and have only owned/used one since September last (08). Lo I enjoy it so much I bought another one S/hand over the net a couple of weeks ago, so it begins.

Machine is a HP6910p running Vista Business with Office 07 pro+ and a lot of Adobe apps, as soon has I recieved it I dropped down Belarc Advisor which verified all hardware and software were in order. Over the next few days I updated both the MS and Adobe, MS also verified the system updateing with Vista SP2 amongest others, I then uninstalled the provided Antivirus (Avast free), and installed my own Security apps Kaspersky 6.0 which comes curtousy of my ISP, SuperAntiSpyware free and Guardian Anti-Spy.

The latter of these (Guardian) identified one malware program (Trojan CIA B/Door)which I believed it had removed, it was only later while googling my problems I became aware how serious and sophisticated a threat this particular malware is. I switched on one Saturday morning turned my back to make a cup of tea when I returned it was a complete burn out Antivirus gone wireless connection gone everything frozen and locked up solid. From there it's been all down hill, has no recovery disks or partition were provided with the machine and the seller either will not or cannot respond to my requests for help.

To the point were we are now:- cannot Boot out of windows error recover page. However I have found the Vista Recovery/Restore CD hosted by Neosm... Read more

So about a month ago, Vista (x64) quit working for me. I had Ubuntu Linux on the machine as dual boot, and was able to get that running for day to day use, and was able to map to my Windows directory and access pretty much anything I needed from Ubuntu. I sort of forgot about the problem, and had planned to copy any important files that I wanted to an external HDD, but hadn't done it yet.

So today I do a reboot of my computer and Ubuntu won't load, it ives me a message to say I need to run chkdsk /r. I tried doing that twice, and it seems to get hung up on step 4 of 5 after several hours of scanning. I am now unable to load Ubuntu or Vista.

When I load Vista, I am able to get past the user login screen and to the desktop, but then I receive multiple pop up windows stating that various files are corrupt. Some say to run chkdsk. I am unable to click any icons on the desktop, and when I click the Start menu it just opens up a blank menu. Nothing is able to open and a Ctrl+Alt+Del doesn't even work properly anymore.

I am now only interested in recovering any important files (unless I can get Vista running again) but I'm unable to access the files from Ubuntu, and really don't have a clue how to proceed in either repairing my Vista install or recovering my files.

Any help will be incredibly appreciated! I'm ready to get back to normal!
Thanks

I have been having successive problems with my computer. A couple of weeks ago it started to lose icon images on the desktop. They would not disappear, but they would turn into a white square with blue borders. The programs would still open when you clicked on the icon however.

Yesterday I started the computer and it would only get as far as the desktop background with absolutely no icons. It would just freeze there and you could not proceed or exit. I had to physically turn the computyer off. I figured it was time to reformat the whole C drive, but then it would not even open Windows XP with the XP CD in the DVD player.

Anyone had similar experiences and/or solutions?

Thanks

A:XP does not get past Desktop Background

welcome to TSG

when you can't "get past Desktop Background" try this:

bring up the task manager (CTRL + AL + DEL), click FILE, NEW TASK (RUN)... and type EXPLORER.EXE

if your computer does not boot from your windows installation disk, you'll have to change the toot order in the BIOS setup utility (DEL or F2 during the POST screen on most systems) to boot from CDROM first.

Am I infected. Running Windows 7. When the computer is booting up the desktop icons appear and the windows hour glass centers on the screen and stays busy. No further actions are allowed. The computer will boot into safe mode and allow browsing. I have installed Malwarebytes while in safe mode and it showed a trojen being cleaned. Avg was also run in safe mode and showed a few spyware items cleaned. Rebooted the computer and still the desktop and all icons appear with the Windows hourglass in the middle of the screen. No other actions are allowed.

I have three seperate rescue disks that all have been used on other computers so I know they are good CDs. I have turned the computer off and selected a boot from the floopy drive. None of the disks are allowed to boot into the antivirus runs. The AVG disk has a Memtest program on it and it ran fine. Just cannot get an antivirus to run from a rescue disk.

Last thing tried was botting into safe mode and running an online antivirus. It claimed to find spyware and nothing else. The problem with the computer is still the same. There have been no error messages or bsd; just a frozen computer.

All advise is welcome. Thank you

Well I started this over in the Am I infected? forum (link... http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic426767.html/page__gopid__2469466#entry2469466) and I was told by the moderator that there was no malware found.

Briefly this is the problem. The Toshiba laptop will boot up. All of the desktop icons will appear and the pointer will freeze in the middle of the screen with the hourglass beside it. Nothing is allowed from that point. Booting in to safe mode is fine and everything runs. I have tried everything that was suggested in the above mentioned forum post. Last thing tried was a Start Up Repair and it did not accomplish anything. Hoping for some help. Thanks in advance for all responses.

Okay so I accidently deleted the C: partition and could not boot. Loaded my Windows 7 disk and let it do a repair. It will boot now and it gets to the screen that says "Preparing your desktop" after several minutes the screen turns blue with no desktop icons. There seems to be some kind of disk activity as if it is searching for something it does not find even after 8 hours. So here are my questions, Can I reinstall windows? There appears to be two partitions, the C: drive and the D: drive. The C: partition is small (100GB) while the D: partition is much larger. The D: partition appears to have all my data and programs. Will windows install only to the C: partition and not destroy the programs and data on the D: partition or will an installation wipe out both the C: and D:? Second question, is there some program such as easeus that you can run only on the C: and recover the windows operating system? I am really stuck here and my knowledge is very limited so I could use and would very much appreciate any and all help I can get! Thank you in advance.

Hi I really hope someone can help me!

I have a fujitsu lifebook with windows 7 on it
I had an error message pop up when i tried to click on google chrome this morning, so I closed it and attempted to re-start my laptop, then AVG pops up telling me I have a virus so I allowed it to "clear" said virus. I then restarted my laptop and it would not go to the login page.

I attempted system repair to no avail, I then allowed chkdsk to run and there were a lot of "security ID repairs", I have also tried f12 and booting from my windows 7 installation disk. Non of these options have worked

I get the fujitsu screen, then the windows loading screen then instead of the log in screen which would be next, I get a black screen with the cursor visable and you can move the cursor but nothing else works and no keyboard shortcuts work

someone please help.
I've been told to restore the OS but i cannot afford to lose all the files on my laptop

A:Laptop wont load past windows page, stuck with black screen and cursor

Since AVG 'cleaned' a virus - all bets r off as the problem could be a leftover from the virus. apparently, a (some) system files r damaged. Going forward, u might not want to run normally as an admin user. That helps keep malware from invisibly installing if the AV does not catch it. 1. have u tried booting to safe mode? If u can get there try this clk Start - type CMD -- rt clk cmd.exe and select Run as Admin when the dos window opens type 'sfc /scannow' let it run retry boot when done. 2. If u can't get there or that doesn't work put ur windows CD in and boot to that. Run the repair install - or it might be called upgrade. Just do NOT do a CLEAN install. That will not erase any of your data. 3. If that does not work If u get a Hiren's boot disk, or something similar. U can boot to that and most likely copy ur data from the drive prior to doing a clean install. This assumes the drive isn't corrupt which appears to be true since it gets to the Windows screen. 4. If not u will have to remove the drive and connect it to another computer as an external HDD to copy the data. 5. If none of the above works - u have come to the complete understanding of the word BACKUP................ good luck

As per the title. Looks as if everything is working fine but there is no internet connection and although the icons are all there none of them respond to mouse clicks. Several items are missing from the system tray - Norton 360 and printer for example so obviously some programmes aren't launching properly. I have gone into safe mode and used system restore to an earlier date and everything works fine then. Switch off and try to reboot and it's back to the original problem. Is it the registry, bad sector, start up programme faulty? I don't know where to start looking!

A:Won't go past initial desktop screen

Hello Michele,

Welcome to the forum. I would request you to help me with few details in order to assist you further:

Since when are you facing the issue? Were there any recent hardware or software changes made on the system? What are the external devices connected to the system? What is the make and model of the said computer?
I would also suggest few steps that might help. Please try the following steps:

Releasing the residual power from the system.
Disconnect all the external peripherals from the computer including the battery and the ac adapter and release the residual power by pressing and holding the power button for 5 to 10 seconds. Turn on the computer and check.Disconnect all the external peripherals and check if the system is still restarting. As you have said that you tried system restore from safe mode, I would request you to check if you are able to operate the system in safe mode.
To boot into safe mode, restart the computer and keep tapping F8. From the Advanced Boot Option, select Safe Mode and hit Enter.
Please try the steps and back with details.

Hi All,
I have a computer that can't seem to boot past the desktop picture. I can get to the task manager but nothing else comes up up not even any task bars or icons.

Any thoughts?

I took the drive out of the computer and scanned it for virus's with spy doctor and it it did pick up a few and wiped them out but I still get the same problem on startup.

The dell tests suite gives me hard drive errors but I can get to it when I put it in a usb drive case and hook up it up to my computer.... Any thoughts??

A:Cant Boot Past Desktop Picture

When you get to the desktop wallpaper, press ctrl-alt-delete.

Click the process list and write each down and post back.

Chances are for you explorer.exe is not in the list and is a vital part of the windows boot process. If you dont see explorer.exe click new task then enter explorer and press enter. If that doesnt work type explorer.exe and press enter.

Once explorer starts, you should build the windows taskbar and start icons, you may get lucky and get full services, e.g. sound and internet access etc.

If you get the message, file not found, check the spelling, if the message still persists, you may not be so lucky and explorer.exe may
have been deleted.

This is the first and only thing that loads.

It will load the F8 option screen, it will not load any of the options

It will not load into any option of Safe Mode.
It will run the Repair option that reload the machine to its original

I hope that does not have to be an option. The machine does back ups but they are on o seperate partition.
I have waited all day for the machine to get past this screen but it does not. 14 hours then I shut it down.

A:My Desktop wont go past a blue screen

Tryfe_lyfe Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! Hard to help as you didn't provide us any details about the PC, the OS you're running, or the screen -- other than the color. We need the detail product number of your PC.  There should be a sticker with this information on the case. Also, need to know what Windows version your PC is running. We need that information because troubleshooting steps are different for the various Windows OSs.IF it's running Win10, did it come with that preinstalled?  If not, what was the prior OS of the machine and how long ago did you do the Win10 Upgrade?  And, was your machine OK after the Upgrade or were you having problems, and if so, what were those problems? Also, you say this is a blue screen ... so, does it have text on it (like with as BSOD)?  Does it have a set of rotating dots? Does it have an HO Logo? We can proceed once you provide the information. Thanks

I then did chkdsk followed by a repair installation with the installation disk. Now when it says I must enter the key code to activate windows before I can get into windows I select "Yes" but then I get the desktop background screen and an arrow and nothing else happens. Can't use an emergency repair disk because I didn't make one. Also have files I would like to copy to something before comlpletely reinstall windows.

Okay, first things first- I was told to post in this forum on my original post (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/506868/so-over-my-head-now-whole-network-infection-if-seems/). Here’s the dealio and the logs for this computer (for more info on the WHOLE issue please see the link above).

This is part 3 of 4 issues I am having…ugh.

Computer #3 is a DELL DIMENSION DESKTOP PC running WINDOWS XP
This computer is the one that connects directly to my cable modem and the wireless printer all the other computers use. It pretty much has nothing on it but the OS and some programs after I had my 2nd hard drive (that stored muci files) fail about 4-5 months ago- thank god for dropbox backups!
The logs I copied/attached were run IN SAFE MODE. The reason is that I can’t actually get past the login screen if I am not in safe mode. Basically, when I log in regularly it logs me right back out and acts sorta like a log in loop. Also, even in safe mode, I can’t download files from the Internet (including windows updates). Lastly, even though I am an admin I still have to click "run as admin" in safe mode to get things to work but in all actuality this doesn’t help because nothing on this machine is really working how it is supposed to!

Across my 4 computers I’ve seen everything flagged from Trojans to backdoors to spyware to adware. Can’t recall what specifically got flagged on this one BUT since I’ve got more logs than ... Read more

Boot from a Windows 7 DVD and use System Restore to roll back Windows to a point in time when your computer was functioning correctly. It allows you to undo system changes without affecting your personal files, such as e-mail, documents, or photos.

My system will not boot past the BIOS.
CPU is identified, 1024 MB Ram tests fine and then it all stops.
I can go to my BIOS setup but it takes 5-10 minutes after I press DEL.

Here are the specs of the system
P4 2.8Ghz
1 Gig RAM
128 MB Nvidia video card
2 80 Gig WD IDE drives
2 optical drives
Foxcon 661M03 Motherboard /Phoenix Award v6.00 BIOS

My troubles began a night ago. I had set the computer to copy a video file onto a DVD.
It had to sqeeze a 6 gig video onto a regular DVD so I just let it run over night.
I happened to wake up so I went to check on it in the middle of the night. The DVD burn turned out fine but the PC began making a clicking noise. I was too bleary eyed to investigate it further and the PC would not respond to my attempts to do a regular shut down or a reboot, so I just shut off power.

The next morning, the clicking was gone but I could not get it to boot past the BIOS level.
I could get into the Setup several minutes after pressing DEL, but changing the boot order to all combinations of optical and hard drive boots did not work. Disconnecting the drives did not work either. No combination of drives worked to get past the BIOS screen. I did hear the clicking once more and I believe it was a hard drive but I have not been able to duplicate that again. The drive indicator light stays on all the time too.

Am I missing something here or is my motherboard shot?

Hello
I am not sure if this is a hardware problem, bios or software but here goes.

The system will not boot beyond the bios/starting windows stage.
The problem occured after a shut down and pc was rebooted the next day.
No recent alterations to the hardware or configuration has been made.
My system will not boot and gives me the following message.
Windows could not start. the following file is missing or corrupt \windows\system32\config\system
insert windows cd and press r to repair.

My System is as follows Windows xp home with sp3 . Asus a8v deluxe motherboard with AMD athlon64 3200+ processor
Ami bios 08-00-09
Fitted with two Maxtor 80gb hard drives sata serial ata

I did not have a windows xp disc as it was preloaded by the manufacturer when I bought it.
After trying all manner of ideas to solve the problem , I have now purchased a Windows xp cd with sp3.
This has still not solved the problem. When I boot up using the xp cd it loads ok, but when I try and do a repair it says Hard drives not found.
I have checked that both hard drives are properly connected.
When I enter the bios they are set to auto and shown as ft tx ary1 and ft tx ary 2
Further in the bios it says Serial ch0 master no device and serial ch1 master no device and lists the following
ID Mode Size Track-mapping Status
1 1+0 stripe 81964m 9964/225/63 functional
2 1+0 stripe 81964m 9964/225/63 functional

How do I made the system see the hard drives ?

Hello gail2487, and welcome to Vista Forums!

If you have your Vista Install DVD or the Vista "Systems Repair" CD Vista will burn for you, you could try to boot to the CD / DVD and use a "Restore Point" to go back to where your password worked.

Other possibilities: Reset User Account Password

Forgot the Administrator's Password? - Windows Password Recovery - Windows Password Reset

I just recently started having this problem, yesterday in fact. I don't know what is causing it but I reaallllllly need to fix it, I have a project with a deadline.

Basically I turn on my computer and it powers up, POST beeps, and then it sits there in the POST screen forever. It's an ASUS M2N-E SLI board, 4x2GB sticks of RAM, AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual core CPU. I have 4 harddrives, with windows 7 installed on one and windows xp installed on another. The problem happens even if all the harddrives are unplugged.

Last night I was having the problem and I unplugged all the harddrives but the one with 7 installed and it booted just fine, today even that didn't work.

I don't know how else to describe the problem, but if there's any more information you need please let me know.

Please help me fix this guys!

A:System will not boot, can't get past POST

Well I suspect you are obviously aware on the > No Post Guide
But instead of unplugging the Hard Drives, fully unplug the data cable from the Motherboard
Also, it may just be a faulty Power Supply with all those drives and a DVD Drive and everything else going on

A:System very slow, past week u

Well, by including a hijackthis log you really kind of restrict the number of people who can or will reply to you until a malware expert comes by and certifies that there is nothing in your log which can be considered malware.
You really should have posted on the malware board first if you think you are infected and if not you should not post a hijackthis log unless it is asked for.

===========================================================
But lets assume you are not infected and that the problem lies elsewhere.
The first thing I would ask is "What changed"
Did you install , update , or change anything just before the slow down occurred? Or did it just sort of creep up on you?

You mention that you think your internet is slow,
"This past week or so my system is running apps and internet very slowly. Takes a long time to open or switch from one open app to another or from one internet tab to another."

Have you run an internet speed test to confirm that you are getting the connection speed you are paying for?
Your ISP may offer one such as this one from AT&T
http://helpme.att.net/dsl/speedtest/

Or you can try any of the free ones
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/
http://www.speedtest.net/
http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest
for example.

Okay, lets say that you have tested your connection speed and it checks out.
So you know it is your PC.

The next thing to do is to check your specs out.
How much RAM do you have What processor and speed? (rig... Read more

No doubt I am doing somthing really stupid, but will someone explain this to me?

When I surf the web, I bring up OLD web pages. That is, when I click on a site on Jan 13, I will get the Web-Page from Jan 9. I am NOT using a book-mark or any secondary method to access, I just type in the URL at the top. I get an old version, even though I KNOW the site has been updated. If I access the same page on another computer, I will get the Web-Page from Jan 13 with recent info -- but my own computer gives the Web-Page from Jan 9 with old data.

What am I doing wrong? What things should I check?

A:Web-Page "Time Warp" -stuck in the past!

Assuming you're using Internet Explorer, in IE go to Tools>Internet Options>General tab and click on the Delete Files button. That will get rid of the old versions of the pages that IE has cached.

Then click the Settings button. Check either "Automatically" or "Every time you start Internet Explorer" (Automatically is the default). Then, if you have broadband, set the cache size to something a lot smaller than the default. I set it to 10 megs. A large cache can be helpful on a slow connection but with broadband, it can take longer for IE to search a large cache than it takes to get a completely fresh download of the page.

When done, click OK and OK again. Try a few pages and see if that fixed things.

Then go to

I have a Gateway P-7805U, it is running Vista. I have tried hitting the F8, F2, F10 and nothing happens.  I hit the ESC button and it will take you to another screen. If I press F2, it says "entering setup...." but it will stay that way for a LONG time.  The light that tells you the computer is thinking, only blinks for a quick second and never comes back on.

I have a copy of the restore disc and actually tried them just to see if it would do something different.  It would not.

I am like other people, I have important stuff I cannot afford to loose.  Does it sound like a OS problem or does it go further?

Thanks in advance.

Well hello again my friends! Here's the deal, I normally leave my PC run all the time, so yesterday morning when I got up to check my mail I got the dreaded "System configuration files missing or currupt". Later I did a system restore and all was fine. I spent the next two hours or so loading my software back, when I was done I did a system restart, then it happened! Every time, just before the welcome screen it reboots. Over and over again. My first thought was that the drive was bad, so I got a new 40 GB drive at work and put a new copy of XP Pro on it, thinking I would bring that home install it as a master and use the other drive as a slave. The 40 gig boots fine on the bench but when I put it in my machine I get the same thing, restarts before the welcome screen.Any ideas?

Help...my computer was working fine, then one day when I got a Windows cannot start because the following file is corrupt: System 32/hal.dll error. I took it to 2 diff. people who removed hard drive, and tried to boot from slave drive to no availl Last guy stated he tried to repair the boot.ini.file by changing values, deleting, and restoring it, and error remains. Now I when I try to start it up and run the original Windows Disk, I cannot get past the gateway logo that says F10 for boot, and F2 for bios. I have tried hitting both, restarting computer with operating disk to no avail. I really would like to be able to save all my pics that are on hard drive. Any suggestions of whom I could send to, or how to get past Gateway logo?

My computer crashed, so I had to do system restore. Now my computer won't open firefox (well, it takes an hour or two to open, and then it's a bunch of firefox windows), and internet explorer only works in private browsing. My windows explorer also crashes, depending on what I click on. There is this game I downloaded called Amnesia The Dark Descent, and I tried uninstalling it, but it repeatedly says "error: something went wrong during uninstall". Or something around those lines. This happened a couple weeks ago, but over time it progressively stopped. Now since the restore has taken affect, it must've taken it back to the point when it had started being like this. I deleted a bunch of stuff that I thought may have been a problem (music synchronization programs, mostly), but nothing works. usually when I click on the Amnesia shortcut, it crashes Windows Explorer. None (that I am aware of, yet) of my files have been deleted or altered. I McAfee says that I don't have any viruses. I only have had this computer since December 2010. Any idea of what could be the problem(s), and how to solve it/them?

Download malwarebytes from here: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware: Malwarebytes Install the program, reboot computer into safe mode and then run Malwarebytes. OR Option two would be to restore your system to a known good date before this happened...i.e. last week. I would do this from safe mode as well. Hope this helps.

now, my laptop is a Sony Vaio laptop runs on Windows 7 home edition.
i know i still have the disk that contains word, excel etc.
anything else was most likely accidentally trashed.

when i start the laptop it reads the Vaio logo, of course i hear a disk spinning and not a type of clicking but a sound for sure. screen turns black and reads operating systen not found. before that it read a different disk not found. i pressed f2 and set everything to default. i'm stumped from here. i'm thinking on looking for a book to help, haha.. if you know one, share the name. thanks

A:how can i get past the can not read Operating System Not Found Problem

First enter BIOS setup to see if HD registers there. If not it may have failed. Test it to be sure by downloading, burning to CD with Windows Image Burner then running a full scan with the HD maker's HD Diagnostic DOS scan.

You can also try accessing it through the door on back to reinstall it to see if it is failing to make contact when plugged in.

Videos for doing this and replacing the HD if necessary are available by googling your model name/number and + replace HD.

If you replace the HD you can run Factory Recovery disks you made at setup or order from Sony support, or get a superior Clean Reinstall - Factory OEM Windows 7

If HD is intact work through these steps for Troubleshooting Windows 7 Failure to Boot

Okey, here it goes....
A long time ago in a galaxy far far away..
My pc decides not to boot past the bios flash screen.

Detailness

- So i got a new sata hdd not long ago.

- I had Ubuntu and Windows 7 on duel boot. They both worked fine and never gave me any trouble.

- Decided i didn't want duel boot anymore.
I just wanted a fresh install of Windows 7
because im going to be upgrading the mobo, ram, CPU and gfx card.
Basically everything going to be upgraded over the course of the next couple of weeks.

- So i proceeded to format my 500gb sata hdd and install Windows 7.

- After the files copied from the dvd to the hdd my pc rebooted as expected.

- Then the normal boot screen appeared. this is where it hangs.

This is pretty much what i see:

Press del to run setup
Press f8 for BBS POPUP
DDR Frequency...... blah blah
Initializing usb controllers.. done.
Auto-Detecting Pri slave... IDE Hard Disk
Auto-Detecting 3rd slave... CD/DVD ROM
Sec Master: ST3500418AS CC38
Ultra DMA Mode-5 S.M.A.R.T. Capable and Status OK
It just hangs on this.

- I cant boot from dvd or cd
- I cant press del to run setup, it just says entering and does nothing else
- I cant press f8 for bbs popup, it just does the same as pressing del

If i remove the sata hdd i can then press del or f8 and it lets me into the bios.
same with the dvd drive. If the hdd is unplugged then i can boot from the dvd.
what i think the problem might be is my processor. its pentium 4... old... Read more

Well here is my problem. I am running a gigabyte k8ns ultra 939 with bio versions f8 the latest, with a amd 64 4000 and with 2 raptor drives and a 120 gb seagte sata drive. With a 6800 ultra 256mb with nv silencer. I have 1 gig of ocz 3200 dual channel platinum edition running in my system as of now. However i bought another gig dual channel kit it has the same cas latency settings of 2-3-2-5 the only difference between the one gig set of 2x 512 moduels is the housing one uses a more rescent housing set of heatsinks due to the fact this memory was bought 3 weeks ago adn my origional gig was bought back in April or so. Now the system runs smooth and perfectly but when i put in the gig of memory to increase to 2 gigs it shows up in bios no problem then it goes to deteting aray and detects my draid drives no problem it should go to the verifying dmi pool data then to xp boot screen but it stays at the detecting raid array instead of moving i have updated my bios and have the latest drivers i am unsure what the problem is. My manual states nothing about any problems when all four dimms are full just when 3 dimms are full it states it wont boot but since i am using all 4 dimms it should boot the mobo is capable of max of 4gigs of memory. If someone could please help me it would be much appreciated. If you need any more details feel free to email me, i really do no want to throw the other gig of memory away and stay with just 1 gig of memory.

Hello,

I'm working on a Compaq Deskpro EN500 running Windows XP Professional SP2 (with all patches and updates), current antivirus and antispyware, and firewall.

The system was working fine, user was online browsing the web when the system froze. The mouse froze, etc. Start button could not be accessed. The user shut down the system with the power button. When he turned it back on, he was greeted with the standard Microsoft 'an error has occured' screen' and given the choices of
Safe Mode
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Last Known Good
Start Windows Normally

When I choose any of these, I can get as far as the Windows XP splash screen and then the system seizes.

I can get into the Windows Recovery Console. I have run a CHKDSK /P /R and a FIXBOOT. CHKDSK returns no errors. I'm not sure what to try next short of a rebuild. Ideas?

A:Unexpected system shutdowns now turned into not even going past the black windows xp

I Have the same problem, except that my computer manually restarts after about two seconds of being in the black Windows XP screen, right before login. It will not even start up in safe mode.

The problem is, I do not have a startup or installation disk.

I could easily back up everything I have onto my fat32 volume, but I cannot reinstall Windows. Is that my only option?

BTW, Linux boots up fine, so it's not a hardware problem, unless it's the harddrive that Windows was on, but a restart due to a harddrive failure is quite random...

My computer started messing up when I was just playing a game. Then a BSOD flashed on for a millisecond, and my computer restarted.

Things I've tried:
Powering down for 10 seconds, reboot
Starting windows with 'last good config'
Starting normally
Starting with Safe and Net
Sarting just in safe mode, letting all processes go
Starting in safe mode, cancelling a driver loadup when it asked me (I can't remember which that was, but it made absolutely no difference either way, so...)

Am I going to have to re-buy Windows?

For the past week, I have not been able to back up files from the Windows Vista "Backup and Restore Center", nor can I perform a System Restore. The ?Backup and Restore Center? launches, but gets stuck at 25% completed (I believe at the ?Creating disk image? stage?) for at least 3 hours, while it used to only take 10 or 15 minutes to back up files until last week. System Restore attempts to launch, even asking me for administrative permission to open, but seemingly does nothing after 30 minutes. When I attempt to see if the System Restore process is running in Task Manager, my laptop slows down and won?t let me do anything else.

Whenever I try to back up files or perform a System Restore, my laptop immediately slows down to a crawl and I rapidly cannot use any other programs. When this happens, I am forced to restart my computer by holding down the power switch since Task Manager won?t close any programs and I cannot shut down or restart my computer in Vista. A few times after restarting, my laptop has automatically run chkdsk, although I didn?t really pay much attention to the results of those scans. In general, even without trying to back up files or perform a System Restore, my computer runs slower than usual during typical tasks and will sometimes grind to a halt.

I have performed the hard drive memory tests as recommended by Dell hardware support with no reported issues. I have also performed full scans for viruses/malware with McAfee AntiVirus and Malwa... Read more

So my system was just working fine when my PSU decided to choke on me. Went to the store and bought a 550W power supply made in China by power bay. More power then I need but for the same price I thought why not. I use to have an Antec 380W. Now I figured out when I plug the DVD drive the system won't boot past the bios. If the DVD drive is unplugged then my computer works fine but I have no DVD. I know my DVD is working because I plugged it once the pc booted past the bios and managed to install my antivirus. What is the problem?? My old psu had 6 4 pin (molex) connector which two were for fan only. This new psu has only 3 molex which is really ackward to connect one HDD, one Video car and my DVD and the case fan. Should I go get a decent brand with more connectors or is it something else that cause the problem ???

Thanks

A:DVD drive when plugged stop system from booting past BIOS

You will need to get a molex adapter. Obviously your DVD isn't hooked up correctly. What's ackward? backward?

I am experiencing lag times that are incredibly slow. When I log on it takes almost 10 minutes before my desktop appears. Any software program takes a long time to open and always kicks back errors that I have clicked "do not ignore" including I9. Outlook won't load my folders anymore. All folders: documents, pictures, music take up to 20 minutes to upload. I suffer watching a green bar slowly creep across the menu bar with no results. I also ran a complete Windows Defender-found nothing, defragged my hard drive, checked recent updates-found none. My computer also has started restarting itself (no time pattern) and I've had the "blue screen of death" appear three times in the past month-all times required hard reboots. Took all the advice found in aother forum about lag times to try resolve my issues: Booted in safemode-took almost as long to upload; Ran SFC/SCANNOW in command field-results returned normal, no integrity issues found. My computer is less than a year old. Gateway says its a Microsoft issue because I changed from the OEM to my own Windows 7 Professional (discount because I'm in school). Had a computer tech look at it & he says it either my media center shutting systems down or my cpu is overheating or my video card is defective. Beofre I have someone dismantle, change, or delete anything I thought I would check with this forum for advise before I let anyone "fix" my computer.

Hi my laptop toshhiba laptop satellite a15 s157 does not allow windows to get past the windows xp page where the horizontal bar is..it repeatedly goes to the f8 mode where it gives an option to run it with safe mode. if run in safe mode the computer goes through many disk partitions and then ends with the partition that ends with system 32 \drivers\ndsird.sys

I donot have a recovery disk yet. I was wondering if there is any way at this point to salvage what is on my harddrive on this laptop.

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on how i can do this.

First try to select the restore to previous known good configuration. If that does not work, try doing a repair on the system (make sure you do NOT format anything)

I'm using Windows 7 on a Dell machine. When I installed 7 a few months back, I didn't set up a system password (I don't think) because I'm the only person on this machine and I didn't want to log-in each time when starting up. Normally when I start or restart the computer I go straight into Windows and into my account.

While playing chess today, my monitor froze. I turned off the monitor and restarted the machine and the monitor seemed fine during start-up. But then I got a system log-in screen and an option to log in as "other user" and that's the only log-in option was available. (I'm not sure why all of a sudden I have to log in.)

So when I hit "other user" and then try to log in with what I think is my username and a likely password, the system says no go.

Why am I getting to a log-in screen now all of a sudden? And how do I get in to the system if it's saying my username and password are wrong?

Update: OK, after restarting several times, all of a sudden I see the welcome screen and then my desktop -- I'm in like normal. But my desktop picture is now back to a default Windows one and the task bar, which used to be a dark blue, is now a light gray. My theme had gone to "basic." Any guesses as to what all happened to my system?

A:Can't get past "other user" on log-in page

Hello Bilco, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Since you are now logged in, see if you may be able to do the tutorial to hopefully fix this "Other User" log on screen issue. Logon Screen - Fix Showing Only "Other User" and Last Logged On User
If not, then you might see if doing a system restore at boot using a restore point (if available) dated before this happened may help.

Hope this helps,

Hi you all,

I really need some help. I was under the process of System Recovering my Hp Mini 110 when it died because I didnt realize it wasn't charging. Now the computer won't go past the Windows screen and I can't seem to do anything to get it to work anymore. I am so frustrated because I was doing the recovery because there was a virus on the computer and now it's in a even worse state than before.

I have tried the hitting of the F8 button that takes me to the black screen where I can do a few commands like Safe mode and Last Configuration and Starting the computer Normally but nothing is working

When I try to do the Repair Your Computer (the first option command choice) option it takes me to where I have to enter an Administrator password which I have no idea of what is it. Does any one anyone at all know what the Admin. password maybe or how I can bypass it to get the computer running again? Please?? I asked HP and they said I need to send it in for $250 to be repaired and I can't do that at this point

So please chime and help me. Any advice or tips would be so gratefully appreciated. Thank you everyone.

Hi - after being hijacked today twice and last week having numerous virus, trojans and the like attack my computer I encountered through a google forum talking about how to resolve being redirected constantly your combofix program. I downloaded it like many suggested and ran it. Previously had run symantec, adware, malwarebytes numerous times in the past week or so - one of the viruses when I read about it in symantec said it job is to attract other viruses...Symantec caught it and delete it but maybe not...(this was last week)At the end of running the combofix program it created a log and asked to post it - which I am doing now. I understand from reading a bit of the intros your site that this was not the way combofix should be used - but I had already ran it. been studying this problem for a few months now trying to isolate its cause but only recently have I been able to do this with much luck as its crashes have become more frequent. I have a new Cisco external network adapter [usb] and I run Minecraft. I thought either of these were the cause as a lot of crashes took place while they were running but have just witnessed a crash with no MC and then with no adapter plugged in albeit MC was running. also a few times when a flash drive was plugged in the computer crashed the moment it was plugged in. I thought maybe a hardware issue with the back usb ports but it doesn't add up as the computer crashes even when no usb is plugged in. except for the extension which I plug the adapter in although the adapter was removed.

as a side note this build has been glitchy from the get go and I've done a clean install over 30 times in the first year alone. perhaps this is all connected.

A:BSOD / full system crash been happening more frequently past 3-4 month

Have you contacted your IT department for help? Does the computer act up when hooked to the network or domain.
30 installs in one year is huge. Where did you get your copy of Enterprise? It might have a flaw in it.

Monday morning- Screen pops up saying my laptop wasn't shut down right. That it had to run a test to shut it down normal- Test took about 3hrs to complete.
After test I could get on like normal then once I shut it it shut down and didn't get back on till later that night only to find I CAN"T get past the  Black screen of death- the black screen with the "_" in top left corner. I've restarted it a lot to see if it would just turn on like normal with no luck. I CAN"T press F8 without having it beep at me I can only get into F2 and F12 and that is it. I know my battery is crap has been because it won't charge. I also Sunday night uploaded from malware bites web page a free download refreash virus protection again. Because somehow it went missing a few weeks before I did find that night I had to big viruses that I did get taken care of which were both trojans. I did get onto google.com a few times that night with having problems when trying to open the new window in a new tab- Fire Fox.- My mother also said her down stairs computer desk top was doing the same with google the day. So I'm wondering what is going on with everything. I've tried to get a email for tech support but no luck because they say that they don't do anything with my model number- which is only 2-3 yrs old. I've got a lot saved on the computer but can't get inside at all.

Hi Emilie2011,
Welcome to the Community, it could be an issue with the harddrive. I suggest you can start by running the Hardware diagnostics.
To run diagnostics press and hold down the "Fn" key (on the lower left hand bottom of the keyboard)  and turn on the system,it should ideally bring up screen showing Pre-Boot System Assessment.
Another way to run the diagnostics go to F12 screen, scroll down using the "up" and "down" arrow key, choose diagnostics  and press Enter.
If the diagnostics shows any error code/message please post it back.
Since your system is getting stuck on black screen with blinking cursor, you can also try to release flea power.
To release flea power disconnect the charger and remove the battery, press and hold down the power button for 30 seconds, reconnect the battery and charger.Turn on the system and see if it boots to Windows.
Hope this helps,
Thank You
Roshan.

Hello,
I somehow got a Spydawn system alert popup virus after downloading codecs from the 'net thinking it was safe, i was wrong. I knew i shouldn't have trusted the download but did it anyways.
I managed to get rid of some items that were sent to my desktop plus the system alert that was in my control panel-add/remove programs. I ran ewido, adware, spybot and smitfraud, it doesn't say smitfraud fix..? I even did all of this in safe mode too, but the system alert popup is still flashing in the bottom right corner but now i can not access internet explorer...can't make a connection to the internet.

I don't see anything referring to spydawn in the log.

My Hijackthis log displayed these files that appear to be part of my problem.
I have no internet connection so i can't show you the complete log unless i copy all of it word for word...which i did for just these particular ones that seem suspicious.

I'm not sure what site it was, but some site implanted a fake antivirus downloader into my desktop, removing my background. I'm an extreme novice, so I left it there for a while, thinking it would be gone when I restarted. First came the google redirects, then I watched a Seinfeld/Bill Gates video on microsoft.com. All I did was run spybot and then shut down the computer. I logged back on a few minutes later, and the redirects were mostly gone, but windows firewall and zone alarm virus scan were oddly disabled. After that I began to hear strange glitchy sounds in my speakers and when I turned up the volume I realized I was listening to the highly distorted audio of the video I'd watched minutes before. I was like an intruder was hovering over me like "look what I can do, and you can't do a thing about it."

Now I have ad-aware, rsit, hijackthis, currports, and I ran combofix in the recovery console. I ran all these in safe mode, but the system seems just seems "wrong" to me, and I don't feel secure. Here is a rsit log. Please, any help at all would be great.

Today I was playing a game and my system did a hard lock (no sound, no mouse, frozen image on screen), this has been a problem lately as I seem to be losing system stability for a while. I chalked it up to my system overheating before as I was typically able to shut the system down for a while, then 20-30mins later it would be fine.
However, today after my PC crashed for the second time, it started having trouble booting. Sometimes I can hit the power button and nothing happens, the power light comes on, the fans work, but no startup beep and the HDD light doesnt work. Other times I can start it, and it work like normal until it gets to the Windows 10 login screen (though most of the time it doesnt get that far before freezing), then I get a hang, and the HDD light turns off. The fans on everything continue to work, but the entire PC just freezes.
This PC about 2 years old and wasnt having any trouble until the last two months. This is the first time I have had this particular problem, but it has been crashing quite a lot over the last two months.
I had looked up this issue elsewhere, and it seems that no one can come to a consensus whether its the processor, ram, GPU or otherwise.
PC Specs:
ASUS Motherboard
8 GB RAM (Ram taken from an older PC)
4.7 GHZ 8 core processor
GTX 970
750 Watt Power Supply
Any help you can provide would be appreciated!

I have traced this down to IE8 I am fairly sure. When I copy a picture from a web page and paste it to Word (Office 2007) it pastes the picture the first time and then when I copy another picture, it pasts the original picture no mater what I try. I just upgraded to a new computer and re-installed my Office 2007 with all the updates. However, since I can use snaget to copy and paste each picture with no problem, I am fairly sure that it is not System 7 or Office 7 that is the problem. I checked out a large number of problems related to IE8 and copy and paste, but none seem to match my problem. I tired to do my original copy and paste of the web page http://www.wolftheatres.com/ which I do to post a copy on the wall for my Grandkids to see what is playing there, and it pasts the text just fine but all the pictures after the first one, were replace with the first picture. And more amazing, when touching on each picture, it shows the picture info as being correct for each different show. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

A:Copy & past continues to past the same picture

Try disabling add-ons. Also, install Firefox and see if the issue persists using that browser

While I was on the internet, a web page made itself take up most of my desktop. Originally it said all this crap about SPYWARE FOUND OMG OMG OMG!!!, but I edited the source so now it's just a blank page, but I can't get rid of it. I've used Spybot SD, Ad-Aware, AVG, and Xoftspy, and nothing was found, and there's no program running that could have caused it (I checked all the processes in Task Manager, and they're all ok), so I can't figure out how to get rid of it. Any ideas?

Very slow, sometimes paints black screen for sometime, sometime repaints desktop few times, sometimes goes back to user page.. and sometimes actually goes directly to the desktop.. very confusing. Anybody got any ideas what is causing this software behavior.

Ok, I'm sure there's an answer somewhere on Google but I can't seem to phrase it right, so here goes:

When I minimize Chrome or bring up another program like iTunes, I get a blank desktop page with none of my icons on it. Can't left-click OR right-click on it, but the taskbar still works, and if I click Show Desktop, there are my icons again. BUT if I should change anything or open up a program, back to the blank desktop.

This isn't the end of the world but it's damned annoying. Please help!

I have hp pavilion g6-2249 wm notebook. My laptop is 4 months old. Two days ago when I started my
pc, the welcome page opens and then I sign in. Everything is ok on the apps page that immediately opens.
If I click the desktop app icon, it goes to the desktop and the entire page starts to flash, it shows the desktop
for 2 seconds and then then flashes to blue for 5 seconds and back and forth, etc.

The desktop will not stay open long enough for me to do anything. I cannot get it to start in safe mode. I clicked
F8 repeatedly on start up but nothing happens. I used the esc on startup and ran every test offered except BIOS.
I don't know what to do with that so I didn't mess with it. All tests were ok.

If I go back to the app page from the flashing desktop, the app page and charms start flashing also. I can't even
shut down properly then. Norton 360 runs in the background all the time but I can't get to it to do a scan. I
can't get to any file. The only way to get online is to turn off pc and turn on later. App page does not flash at
that time. I go to search and click on Explorer and I can go to my homepage. If I click on required addons then
the background starts flashing and I have to reset my cursor every two letter that I type. I am going crazy.
Can someone help me???
Thanks

If you can do this, you can get to Safe Mode:

Windows key + C.
Settings
Power
Hold shift key and click RESTART.
then you have all the options.

Click on Advanced Options then Startup Settings.
Click Restart and you have almost the full advanced Boot Options menu like XP, Vista or Win 7.
