Need Help: How do I copy a .tmp file in Windows XP Pro?

Q: Need Help: How do I copy a .tmp file in Windows XP Pro?

Hello, everyone! First let me apologize if this is not the correct forum for this question. I am new to this forum and haven't completely made sense of all the various forums that are available here! ...Wow, what a resource! I wish I had known about this website last time I had to replace my motherboard. ...What a headache!

Anyway, I am trying to copy a .tmp file that is in my \Local Settings\Temp folder. It is a Quicktime movie file of the trailer for the movie The Aviator that I just watched on the Internet. I want to save the file on my harddrive under its correct name -- AviatorTrailer.mov

However, even though I can find the .tmp file, I cannot do anything with this .tmp file -- Windows XP won't let me rename it, won't let me copy it, won't let me move it, etc. Does anyone here know of a way that I can copy this type of .tmp file to another folder on my harddrive and then be able to rename it, play it, etc.?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm currently in the process of copying files back from the cloud in the exact same location where I had them before and now it says that the file name is too long and prompts to see whether I want to skip the file or not. The error message given does not
give the full file name or the path so it is impossible to see which files were copied successfully or not. This never happened with XP! Then afterwards I found that some of the files with long names did copy successfully whereas others didn't. I find this
to be a very user unfriendly process and I'm totally confused! These are critical files and I'm sure I haven't exceeded 260 characters or whatever. This is soOoO frustrating!!

A:file copy error message not sufficient + file name too long will not copy

Hi ,

There is a limit of filename length within Windows Explorer. In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which
is defined as 260 characters.
The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the Windows API that the shell user interface is not able to interpret properly.
This means that your long filename can only be handled at the command prompt level and you cannot drag and drop an illegal length filename within Windows Explorer.

Please simplify your folders and titles.

More information, please check the part of Maximum Path Length Limitation in the link below.

Hi All
I have a rather large file system with lots of folders & subfolders. When I want to save previously on Xp operating system I'd search in explorer open the folder I want then copy the address (e.g c:\customer records\client name\job address).
In windows 7, when I copy the folder address i get this "search-ms:displayname=Search%20Results%20in%20electronic%20files&crumb=location:S%3A%5CSEQ%5C011_Estimating %5Celectronic%20files\CHERMSIDE , 17 smith ST"

As you can imagine I cant paste that into a save as field and expect it find the folder location.

Does someone know if it can do what I want? keeping in mind this is about time saving and productivity exercise so I need a simple solution. It is also on a work computer so a lot of settings are locked.

Appreciate any help

I'm trying to copy a VHD (22g, dynamic I think...)

I tried richcopy. It says copy started, but then stops....

I saw someone mention xcopy /j, to achieve the unbuffered I/O perf. you get with richcopy...

it's running, but no indication as to how long it takes (EDIT: just finished, > 10 mins),

what's the syntax for single files?

Can't you just paste the path into the source?

(starts, and stops... any logs?)

A:how do I copy a BIG single file (using richcopy?) big file copy

Use this command if the VHD is sitting on C:

robocopy "C:\Users\yourName\VHD Folder" "S:\Storage Folder" *.* /COPY:DAT /E

Change yourname and replace VHD Folder with the name of the folder where the VHD resides. S:\Storage Folder is where you want to store it.

I have a NAS server setup with several directories, NOT PARTITIONS, and when I try to move a batch of files from 1 dir. to another, it just crawls at a snails pace. If I do the exact same thing from an XP box, it just flies.

I had 7 gigs of files I tried moving with Windows 7 and it was going to take over 4 hrs. I went to my XP machine and moved the exact same files and it took less the 90 seconds.

This is exactly the same issue that Vista had.

I am using Windows 7 Ultimate RTM (MSDN). Fully legal.

Anyone have a clue as to fix this?

I hated Vista andother than this issue, so far I really like Win 7.

I've noticed that when I copy large video files to my external drive, sometimes while editing there is missing data in a random frame. When I check the original file on the storage card straight from my camera, the data is intact. Sure enough, an MD5 checksum
shows that while most of the files copied just fine, quite a few don't match the verification.

I dismissed this at first as my drive having physical problems, so I ran diagnostics like CHKDSK and looked into some new drives to replace it. Turns out, it has been happening on almost any external hdd I try to copy to, and I just never noticed it until recently!
Thankfully I found this thread:
https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/13a7426e-1a5d-41b0-9e16-19437697f62b/windows-7-64bit-corrupting-altering-large-files-copied-to-external-ntfs-drives?forum=w7itproperf
It seems that this was actually a widespread problem (whew, I'm not crazy). What's troubling is that they never determined the cause OR confirmed a solution! That thread is now closed and locked so I can't comment on it, but here I am still having this exact
problem!
In that thread, they say Teracopy can be used an alternative to the Windows copy to make sure everything works OK. TC seems to not have this bug somehow, and on top of that it also supports MD5 checksum verification in case I'm still nervous. Problem is,
I have scripts and applications (like FreeFileSync) which I use daily that rely on Windows' file copy proce... Read more

I was wondering how reliable the file copy function in Windows is, for example does it just copy, or does it do a "copy & verify" to be 100% sure the copied data exactly matches the source?

Basically, is it reliable enough to use it to make a backup copy of a hard drive with no doubt that every bit in the copy matches the source?

Since I don't know if it does a copy & verify I've been using a program that does copy and verify, but does the Windows copy do this too?

Thanks

Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy this file

I keep getting this error message when trying to copy files from a USB drive onto my new PC running XP x64 - I copied the files onto a PC running XP Home just to see if it could be done, and it worked OK, but not on to the XP x64 PC.

I then zipped all the files onto my new pc, and wanted to burn a DVD of the zip, and got the same error message.

I unpacked the zip onto the c drive of my new pc, and tried to copy just one single image (jpg) to a different location - i got the same error again.

Hello everyone. I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite with Windows 7 installed. I have never used 7, and upon copying files from an external drive to the C: drive I encountered an error stating that one of the folder names was too long. It gave me a couple of options, and I chose "skip." Unfortunately, it doesn't seem that it just skipped the folder. I can't find it anywhere, either on the external drive where I had copied it from or on the C: where I was trying to copy it. If anyone has any idea where these files are I would greatly appreciate it, as I could not find a temporary location or anything else of that sort.

Hi Belj, Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP Pavilion g6-1305sa Notebook and not able to restore Windows. If the HDD is faulty this might cause the restore not to go well. You might try to run a hardware test.  Please note remove any and all USB devices, and remove memory cards from the card reader slot. Disconnect all non-essential devices. Is this the original HDD? Have you replaced any other parts? Have you tried to do a clean install of Windows 7. Try running sfc /scannow would scan your system for errors at the command prompt. You can get to the command prompt by clicking F11 at startup. You could check this Microsoft document on system recovery options. Hope this is a help. Thanks.

I have a laptop that I am working on when I go into the Add/Remove programs I then go into windows compoonents and pick the ones I want to add. It then prompts me to insert the Windows XP 2 service pack CD. saying unable to copy files

The funny thing is I have the windows XP install files right on C\windows\I386.

This was bought with Windows XP SP2 Preloaded.

I also have tried another Windows XP SP2 CD with no success. As well I tried an original XP CD for grins with no help there either.

I have tried this as local admin/domain admin/user with admin rights, so I know its not a profile thing. I have tried multiple types of media and HDD and CD installs so I know its not location of the files.

Also this happened before it was joined to the domain so I know its not any domain specific setup I.E GPO's or anything of that nature.

Any other thoughts on why this is giving me this problem.

The file it won't copy changes depending on what I am trying to install from the windows components... but some of them are SNMPMIB.DL_ EVNTAGNT.DL_ among others.

I am having this same trouble, I used the start>>find to locate these files, they are there, but they have a weird looking icon, like maybe their file associations are lost, if anyone sees this, and has a clue, please help. My PC has a separate drive with recovery stuff on it, but the drive files on it must be compressed or coded so they cant be searched for individually, it just says "recovery" or ND-tree or soemthing like that, so that wont help, nor do I wish to do a restore, as the last time I did that, it overwrote a ton of stuff in My Documents and I lost stuff (and that was a restore, not a format), anyway, thanks in advance if anyone can solve this.

I briefly read the discusssion "File name too long cannot copy"...
We are some people who thinks that it would be nice, in order to understand our customer needs, to know why Windows / explorer / Kernel OS systems have this MAX_PATH LIMIT. 255 equals 8 bit. I am not sure if this is the right comparison.

A:File name too long cannot copy (8 bit Windows 7 Enterprise (64bit)? :-)

Windows 2000 has a 254 character limit.

Windows XP has a 255 character limit.

Windows Vista and Windows 7 has a 260 character limit.

>> Path+Filename limit is 260 characters.

Exceeding either will result in the error mentioned.

So, to solve this simplify your folders and titles

Hi

Ok, this has bugged me for a while now. About 3 months ago, with my college computing class we attended a lecture/presentation from the guys at Kapernsky in which they showed us some basic tools for securing, and monitoring your own system. I remember them using programs like OllyDBG - but they also had this little software application (btw they told us all of the utilities they were using in the demonstration were available free online!) that monitored the copying of files, deletion of files, edits to the registry, starting/stopping services, running other exe's and opening new webpages.

In the demonstration they ran a 'malicious' installation package and this little log program ran beside it; once they had finished installing, they brought up the log screen and it showed that some services had been started, and where the virus had been installed.

Just wondering if any of you guys may know what this software is called? Links would be great!

Many Thanks

A:Windows Log Software - File Copy, Execute, Delete etc

I'm not sure what programs Kaspersky Lab uses in their demonstrations.
I am aware of Sysinternals suit, which has a set of free useful utilities with huge potential to trace viruses and things like that.
I have seen a video of Mark Russinovich (author) using this suit to do that. This guy works for MS now.

Update: In some of the Kaspersky Lab's slides it is possible to see Process Explorer by Sysinternals and another program Wireshark (Linux version).

When I use Explorer on Windows 8.1 to copy multiple FLAC files to a folder on the SD card of my Nokia Lumia 625 (running on Windows Phone 8.1) via USB, a dialog window pops up in Explorer, asking me to choose between converting and just copying. If I choose to just copy, a progress bar appears, and it always gets stuck at the end of the first file transfer so I have to cancel or close the progress window, and, as a result, only the first file is transferred. If I copy a single FLAC file instead of multiple ones, the same thing happens at the end of the file transfer. So I am forced to copy the files one at a time, and I have to close the popup window for each of them. Is there any way to solve this?

A:Copy file to Windows Phone, disable autoconversion dialog?

My 8.1 Lumia 928 doesn't prompt for file conversion. Going from Windows 8 Explorer, it just warns that it may not be compatible and then gives you the option to bail out of the copy. Maybe the phone app you are using to play FLAC files is giving you the prompt to convert and then has a problem with them.

Which app are you using to play FLAC files on your phone?

I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in: http://attachments.techguy.org/attac...chmentid=62075, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed, no? Or is there a way out somehow?

Never mind, I had it wrong--didn't read the document referred to above carefully enough. The procedure worked like a charm, and the document is very easy to read and entertaining to boot! (pun intended).

The document describes a procedure that closely follows a Microsoft KB document (which I now can't find) but does not contain any warning regarding whether the OS is an OEM (original equipment manufacture) install or not. The Microsoft doc says not to use the procedure on an OEM-installed OS, but I just did it on my Dell, so that warning seems to be incorrect.

A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

I would like to create a .bat to copy files from source folder to destination folder.
Some files in source folder already exist in destination folder (Same name)
What I would like is that files existing in destination folder to be rename to f.eks filename_BAK.extension.
Eksampel.:
Source folder include. FileOne.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt
Destination folder include. FileOne.asp - (NO FileTwo) - FileTree.txt
Result. FileOne.asp (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileOne_BAK.asp) - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt (version from source)(Existing renamed to FileTree_BAK.txt)
Now in desination folder.: FileOne.asp - FileOne_BAK.asp - FileTwo.exe - FileTree.txt - FileTree_BAK.txt
Files in source folder are placed in different folders, but in same structure in destination.

When I use the XCopy command in Windows 2000, I can copy any file I like; however, when I use copy-and-paste or drag-and-drop in either Windows Explorer or PowerDesk, I get the following error:

Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read from the Source File or Disk

I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and came up with only one article, Q224378. This article seems not to apply to my situation because it applies to Windows 2000 Server. I am running Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2. I did attempt to install the fix that article Q224378 suggested anyway; but, I got an error message that I was attempting to upgrade a program that didn't exist on my system.

I have also learned that this error applies when copying from either of my SCSI CD-ROM drives, not when copying from hard disks or floppies.

Any Suggestions?

Does anyone know how to write a script that would specifically

Hi,
I am new to batch files and have read up a little on xcopy and robocopy.
We currently have a folder which new builds are copied and compressed to .zip files and stuck in a  folder. Dozens of zip files are created every day
What I want to do is the following:

I want to copy the newest zip file from folder 1 to folder 2 and extract it.

What is the simplest way to find and copy the newest zip file considering multiple zip files are created each day?

I have the game 'Crysis' on two backup DVD's. I had to put the installation files in a .rar and split them so I could back it up (I downloaded the game digitally from EA)

So when I insert disk 1 and try to copy 'Crysis.part1.rar' to D:/Crysis (D: is my data drive, C: is strictly the OS and maybe 2 or 3 applications installed on it) it copies most of it, but when it gets to '5 seconds remaining' it comes up with this error. It takes like 6 minutes to copy it and then it errors out when it's almost done! I've tried 3 times and the error popped up every time. The disk is spotless... I mean it looks brand new. Not even a speck of dust or any smudges at all.

Why am I getting this error?? I don't know what to do! If I can't copy it I'll have to redownload the entire 6gb installation package from EA, which will take probably 4-5 hours.

Please help!

Additional file info from within the error window:
"Can't read from the source file or disk."
Name: Crysis.part1.rar
Size: 4.37gb (4,588,544KB)
Date Modified: 11/2/2009 12:25PM

Other additional info:
I am running Windows 7 Ultimate x64
I have all the latest updates via Windows Update

I'm currently using Richcopy to move about 4TB worth of data from our colo facility (1000 miles away) to our office. And that data also gets routed overseas first before coming back (don't ask). Needless to say, connectivity while not bad, could be better.

The small files are zooming right along, the issue is the larger files (the ones that are hundreds of MB or even several GB).

From time to time, I briefly lose network connectivity for a second or two, when that happens, the files currently being copied abort and once connectivity is restored, Richcopy just moves on to the next files. So when Richcopy advertises that it 'resumes', it seems it is talking about resuming a file copy queue, and not resuming partially copied files. Those have to start over from the beginning.

Is there a tool similar to Richcopy with the functionality I'm looking for?

Thanks!

Structure:
• I have a network directory that stores photos of individuals in jpg format. There may be only 2 pics of each person, or there may be 7 pics.
• Each persons pics are stored in a randomly named directory / subdirectory. dont have any control over the original program, it's just the way it was written, does not seem to follow any logical pattern, possibly a HEX naming structure based off the date & time, who knows (I will include a sample directory tree at the end of the post).
• Included within each of these created directories, along with the pictures, is a standard text file (filename "B.TXT") which includes the date the picture was taken, the persons name, and other information.
• Each time a person comes in and their picture is taken, the program: (i) creates the random directory (ii) stores the pics (iii) creates the "B.TXT" file with the persons information (iv) generates several other program specific files that I have no need for.
• The program names each of the pictures with the exact same names, which is why they are stored in different directories, so they will not overwrite. The retention period on each individuals directory, pics and files is approximately 40 days.

I just purchased a pre-owned Lenovo T420 laptop with Windows 7, but amazingly, over these many years, I've never had to back up my OS before because someone (my tech guy mostly) had always done it for me. Anyhow, while I do intend to make a full system backup copy, which I have no doubt will include the Windows 7 OS, I would also like to create a backup (disk) copy of my OS only since no install disks came with the computer. I can load the Windows 7 OS onto an 80Mb CD, but the entire hard disk backup will take many gigabytes and I intend to use a 32 Gb flash drive for that purpose.

My first and essential question is, can I create a Windows 7 Pro "restore" disk by just copying and pasting the entire "Windows" file on my hard drive to a CD or Flash drive...or is there more to it than that?

When I started to create a backup copy of the entire disk using the Windows backup program, I took particular notice to the
fact that (after I selected the custom selection option rather than the automatic selection for which files to copy) that the Windows file was no longer listed on the "C" drive menu provided in the backup program. It is certainly listed on my "C" drive when I bring it up directly, so can anyone explain to me quickly what that's all about?

Hello,
I have one internal drive with 1 TB.
The data there is very important to me , so I bought External removable drive for backup.
Now, I want to copy the data from one drive to the second drive but I have to be sure I have a perfect copy of the data.
The data is mostly songs movies and documents.
I'm using windows 7.

My question is this:

1.If I'll transfer the data through windows 7 by copy and paste, I could be sure i have a perfect copy?
2.There are tools for comparison Between the original data to the data that was copied?
If so, what are they?

If I do not in the right place please Please pass my message to the right place.thanks.

jonathan.

A:transfer data through windows 7 by copy and paste perfect copy?

There is no reason why using copy and paste won't give you a perfect copy and in my view it's more reliable than using the Windows backup utility.

One program I've found invaluable is Microsoft's SyncToy, which you can download here: Download: SyncToy 2.1 - Microsoft Download Center - Download Details

It will sync files between folders of the same name on two separate drives or partitions ( I always use the Echo procedure).

You might also want to consider using Windows 7's Robocopy function.

I'd like to take all the share and privilege information for Suzie and give them to Tom.
Can do?

I just downloaded and installed SteadyState. I locked three users, but when the user logged on, they all got an error message, "Windows cannot copy file (file name..) Possible causes of this error include network problems or insufficient security rights. If this problem persists, contact your network administrator. DETAIL - The filename or extension is too long.

I can't find the file that is listed in the error message.
I unlocked the profiles and took off all the restrictions except blocking firefox and netscape. I am still getting the error message. How can I fix this?

A:Error: "Windows cannot copy file. The filename or extension is too long."

Hi,

We occasionally see this with locked profiles.  When a profile is locked, Windows copies the original profile directory (often c:\users\user.orig) to a temporary location (often c:\users\user).  During the user's session, changes the user makes are written to this temporary location.  When the user logs off, Windows deletes the temporary profile, thus cleaning up his changes.

When you see the warning about filenames being too long when the locked user logs in, the problem is usually that temporary internet files created by Internet Explorer exceed the default 260 character path length limit, so Windows encounters an error when it tries to copy these files to the temporary location.  It's possible that other applications could create long filenames/paths that cause similar problems.

I've been able to solve the problem by unlocking the profile, logging in as the restricted user, then emptying the user's temporary internet files in Internet Explorer.  Then log off, log on as the Administrator again, and re-lock the user's profile.

Hope that helps.

-Rob

I missed to say that there is an easier alternative method to copy files with properties is by creating image of the files need to be copied. For example, iso, daa , bin, etc.
Even if we use alternate methods, we need an easy solution to fix the main issue without any tools or software.

I also checked my Task Manager for pointing out memory eating processes but found none. My CPU Usage was dribbling around 0% to 3%. But PFUsage was near 788MB. Then I started searching for virus. Go here to download Ubuntu 10.04 ( There is a newer version, but I am going by my existing setup, so follow along and choose 10.04 ) http://old-releases.ubuntu.com/releases/10.04/ Save the iso file.

Then download ImgBurn from here: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download

Install ImgBurn and run it.

Choose "Write Image to Disc"

At the top of the Imgburn window, where it says "Source" click on the folder with maginfying glass icon; Then navigate to where you saved the ISO file.

Then click on the bottom area of the window depicting hd write to CD.

That should create the CD.

Now you want to boot with the CD on your PC. Check your BIOS so that it chooses to boot using the CD first. You are looking for the Boot menu, boot priority, or something along that line.

Once you boot into Ubuntu, pull down the Places pull down menu. Choose the ## GB Filesystem. That would be your hard drive. You will be able to see all folders in your drive. Now copy off the files you want to a USB memory stick.

I have a backup script I created using Robocopy to always keep a fresh backup of some of my most important data but just noticed one of my files fails to be copied to my backup disk.

The file in question is a executable file called LTL.exe and is a small utility that is part of a scenery add-on product for Microsoft Flight Simulator X.

I've also tried copy this file manually in Explorer by right-clicking the file and then choosing Copy-Paste and although I don't get any error message doing this and the copy process seems to be successful the file never ends up at the destination.

I'm running Win 7 x64 Ultimate and I have UAC disabled (not that it should be important since I'm not trying to copy the file into a system folder) and I'm local administrator on my PC. I've also tried taking ownership of this specific file and double and triple-checking I have full control for this specific file looking at the security tab.

If I launch the file in it's original location the utility starts up just fine so the file doesn't seem to be corrupt.

I've also scanned both this file and my complete PC for viruses both using Avast! and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and all is good...not a trace of any viruses.

Edit: the way to back it up for disaster avoidance is to make an image of the disk partition. Macrium Reflect Free is good. There are other free imaging programs. Look on http://www.thefreecountry.com/

I recently backed up a Microsoft Access file. I formatted my domputer and reinstalled all software. I am trying to copy the file back to it's source directory. I am getting this Error messeage. (Cyclic Redundancy Check) Is there another way to copy this file to where I need.

Thanks Tim

A:File Copy

A CRC problem means that either the original file was corrupt or the archived one is corrupt. You should always check the backup logs after you complete your backup. I think you might be out of luck.

When I try to copy an Outlook .pst file, I get this error message.."The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file."

The file is set for file sharing and other files (in other directories) can be copied. The program is not being used and I checked msconfig to see if it was resident. It is not.

Any ideas?

Although I can copy small files from my Win7 machine to my wife's XP, copying larger files consistently results in the error: 'There is a problem accessing (the particular target dir) Make sure you are connected and try again"

Anyone know what could be causing this problem?

Mark

A:Copy file to XP

Hi, this problem is probably caused by an inconsistent WiFi connection.

It could be on either computer.

Make sure the network drivers are are all completely upto date on both of your PCs and then try again.

Post back with any results.

i am santosh. i want to copy a photo wich is in gif format. i had paste on word document from internet but image does not there. it gives message unavalable link.
please can anyone tell me can i copy these type of file to my hdd.
thanks

A:gif file copy

Right click on the image and do a "save as" to your hard disk. You can import that image into Word.

FWIW, I just right clicked on a graphic on a web page and selected "copy" from the drop-down menu, I was able to paste that image into a Word 2007 document.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site, I have a problem and I hope you guys can help me out.

I usually backup my weeks work on Friday afternoons. What I do is run a "search" for all files created or modified within the last 7 days and then "copy" all relevant files to a folder on an external hard drive, and then burn a CD.

Everynow and then, I get the following message. "Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read From the Source File or Disk"

Do you guys know why this happens? There are no problems with me copying and dragging files individually over to the new folder, but the problem arises when i copy a bunch over.

Last night, I ended dragging my entire work folder (21GBs) onto the external hard drive. It took a few hours, but it worked.

This morning, I was able to run a search for all documents and files that were created or modified over the past week. But when I tried to copy only those files to a separate folder I again ran into this error message.

Does anybody out there know what's going on? Or better yet, does anyone out there have a better way of backing your week's work?

Thanks
Thomas Lee

A:Cannot Copy File

Microsoft Word (for example) locks current temporary files (in your C:\Documents & Settings\{your username}\Local Settings\Temp file and may not allow you to copy them.

When "Copy", "Move", or "Delete" runs across these files, it quits the operation.

Other programs may have "locked files" in other locations.

If you are on XP and if you want a simple backup, use Windows' NTBACKUP. Just go to your START menu, choose RUN and type in NTBACKUP. Be sure to look at the "options" settings.

It provides for full backups; differential backups (all files changed since last full backup); incremental backups(all files changed since your last incremental backup) and for copy (just a copy - doesn't set archive bits.

I'm sure others will reply with comments of their favorite backup programs.

Hi and welcome. Easiest way would be to slave the other hard drive to the computer where you wish to transfer files.

Hello,

I recently bought a Lexar 4 GB jump drive intending to use it as a backup for a documents folder with 3 GB of data.

When I try to copy the folder, the copying starts but a second or two later I get a message "Error Copying File or Folder---Cannot Copy File".

A Lexar technician went through various operations and tests (including reformatting) with me and his conclusion is that one or more of the files is/are corrupted. (We tried to copy the folder to my C drive and got the same error message.)

There are a lot of sub-folders and I suppose I could go through one by one and find which ones won't copy but is there a simpler way of locating the file(s) that are corrupted and correcting them?

Thanks so much!

A:Cannot copy file

Well, I don't know about a "much simpler way", but you don't have to go thru one by one. Basically, you can select half of the folders >copy and paste > if it goes thru fine, then it's not in that half.

So you're left with the "other" half, just select half of that...well, you get the picture.

That's basically what I did when I was trying to locate a corrupted video file. It didn't take too long.

I have a licensed copy of XP running in XP Mode on a Win 7 Pro machine. I have seen instructions on the net for getting Hyper V up and running where I can create a new XP Mode VHD file, but, I would like to copy my own file from my Win 7 Pro machine (because it contains the key XP software that I want to keep running for another year or two).

Replacing that old software should probably be Plan "A" but it's only Plan "B" at this point (or possibly Plan "C").

Friends: Somehow my favourite screensaver got deleted and I am trying to copy it from another PC. I copied the .SCR file from this PC to a floppy, but when I try to copy this file onto the System32 directory I keep getting the message it cannot be copied. Any ideas how I can fix this? The website I got the screensaver from is no longer available. Windows XP Pro. Thanks for any help.

A:Cannot copy .SCR file

The only thing I can think of is permissions. Are you trying to do this from an admin account and do you have any security software that might be blocking system folders from access?

Also, can you copy it off the floppy somewhere else first like your documents, and then try moving it to System32?

i recently copied and pasted a quickbooks 2007 company file, in the quicken world its a .qbw
even though i only selected the .qbw the operation resulted in 2 files being copied, the .qbw i selected and a .qbw.nd
the .qbw.nd is self described as a 'quickbooks configuration' file.
i was just wondering how this happens? from somewhere, somehow, the copy utility knows that when copying file 'x' to also copy file 'y'
is this a windows feature or somehow done by intuit?

A:copy 1 file get 2

Those are created by Quickbooks. It is a Network Descriptor, it is basically a file to help Quickbook users on a network access the Quickbooks file.

Here is my problem

My previous OS was Win 98. My HD was 80 Gb partitioned in to the following C: 20Gb, D: E: F: G: H: I: 10Gb each.

I formatted C: in NTFS and clean installed XP pro.
All the other partitions are FAT32.

I am trying to copy a 4Mb .exe file from a CD-r onto one of the partitions, but I keep getting an error message

"Cannot copy file invalid MS-DOS function"

In explorer if I right click -> properties on any folder the folder attributes are set to Read Only. I set the attribute to Archive or remove the Read Only but this doesn't to work. The attribute is always reset to Read Only.

I log on as administrator but makes no difference.

I am new to Xp but this is doing my head in.

Any help would be appreciated.

Hello all , i am new to batch programming.

I wish to have a batch file to read .apk file from folder and then copy it to another folder. Then it should rename the copied apk file to test.apk

eg:
i have a file in folder e:\apps\angrybirds.apk , I want to copy this angrybirds.apk to d:\apps and rename it to test.apk

Here the file names in the e:\apps\ will be changing. So what ever may be the name , it should read the name of the file from e:\apps\ folder , copy it to d:\apps\ and rename it to "test.apk" . Test.apk is a fixed rename

I want to enter information into one worksheet and then once I have entered all of that information, using a macro or command, have the information transfer into an already established document.

For example...I will type it into E8, it will need to transfer in to the 2nd sheet at I11, if it is > than $0.00. Another amount will be typed into D11, it will need to transfer into I12.

I think I just need help getting started with this macro, it's been awhile since I created code.

With the attached files....treasurer is the 1st file that I will need enter information into and GR is the file it needs to copy into

I can not copy a file to either the Program Files or Program Files(x36) folders.
My account is suppose to be administrator. How do I set up sharing so I can use
my computer and not be told I can not do certain things. I am on a home group
what ever that is. When I try to share the folders I am told I do not have permission to share that folder. And I do not have permission to share or stop sharing the folder.
I am confused by Win 7

A:can not copy a file to folder

what you can do is copy the file you want to share into an already shared folder. If you prefer an option free of windows 7 then dropbox.com is a wonderful fileshareing option. just have you and the person you are trying to share with create an account and upload the file.

Hi,I have many files on a WD external h/drive.I wish to be able to copy file names only to a document without copying the files. Will not let me high light the names only.thanks terry

A:how to copy file names only

I'm not sure how to do it in windows but from command prompt you can type dir h: /s>filename.txt and enter. Where h: is the drive and filename.txt is the file the names are copied to. The /s will have it search any subfolders also. The file filename.txt will be deposited in whatever folder you ran the command from. The file names will be listed folder by folder and not as a single list for the entire drive.Someone much wiser than myself may be able to tell you how to do it in windows or there may be third party software that will do it too.

Hi

If I use copy and paste to copy files, does XP automatically verify that the file copied exactly matches? I have googled this to death and the information is not consistent.

There was a website I found that said:

"To check that files are saved to disk correctly; the system can re-read the disk when saving and verify (compare) with the data in memory.

Syntax
VERIFY [ON | OFF]By default the CMD shell has verify OFF
Windows Explorer will always copy with verify ON"

That means that it always verifies the copy? And that I do not have to get third party software to do this?

Thanks!
Vivienne

Hi,

I have this problem on Vista 64 edition. We have a html file ( index.html ) that is under the root of our IIS web server.

When I edit this index.html file ( in Notepad++ ) I make changes to the file, save and everything looks fine. But when I browse to http://localhost/index.html I'm not seeing the changes that I have made in the file.

So I check the file again, its as I saved it, with my changes correctly. So I made a copy of it ( copy + paste simple ) then I open the copied file ( Copy of index.html ) and it DOESN'T have my changes.

I originally thought it must be a problem with IIS caching the page, but after coping and pasting in the file system and then having 2 files, that have different contents I now think that it must be either an OS error, or a problem maybe with Notepad++.

Does anyone have any ideas? Or experienced this problem before?

A:File copy problem!?

No one has any ideas on this problem. It's very annoying as it basically means I can't edit my file.

Thanks.
