How to copy info in 'dos box' to txt file

Q: How to copy info in 'dos box' to txt file

Could someone please advise me how to copy the info in a dos box to a text file? I remember it was something to do with adding the | character somewhere in the command but the rest escapes me.

Must be Alzheimers, my memory ain't what it used to be I'm running XP Pro SP2.

A: How to copy info in 'dos box' to txt file

If you want to cut & paste from a DOS window, right click on the title bar, Edit, Mark. Use the mouse to highlight the text you want to copy, and hit Enter (yes, Enter).

If you want a command line app to direct it's output to a text file, use the > character. For instance, to capture the output of the DIR command:

I have tried an easier way to copy contents of an excel spreasheet into Word .doc.

Using this site I have found that in Excel copy one large range and Edit-> Paste Special ->
Microsoft Excel Worksheet Object, and this will copy text and tables to Word.

One problem is that the backgound cell lines in Excel also get copied. How can you remove those, in Excel I presume before the copy.

Here is an example.

Byteman, as I promised here, as an attachment, is a copy of the data that adaware recorded in connection with the two hijack files it quarantined. I don't understand enough about what they might mean to appreciate why adaware targetted them. The scenario remains pretty much static. I can download it but It still only lists; it won't work with what it does list. I can't even get a save on what it lists so that I can ship it to you. It takes ctrl-alt-del "end task" to just turn it off nothing else about the software seems to work. Like Goose said, "This is not good!" Are you in touch with the writers of this software? as my password to their forum still hasn't appeared. I'm currently in the process of copying files back from the cloud in the exact same location where I had them before and now it says that the file name is too long and prompts to see whether I want to skip the file or not. The error message given does not
give the full file name or the path so it is impossible to see which files were copied successfully or not. This never happened with XP! Then afterwards I found that some of the files with long names did copy successfully whereas others didn't. I find this
to be a very user unfriendly process and I'm totally confused! These are critical files and I'm sure I haven't exceeded 260 characters or whatever. This is soOoO frustrating!!

A:file copy error message not sufficient + file name too long will not copy

Hi ,

There is a limit of filename length within Windows Explorer. In the Windows API (with some exceptions discussed in the following paragraphs), the maximum length for a path is MAX_PATH, which
is defined as 260 characters.
The shell and the file system have different requirements. It is possible to create a path with the Windows API that the shell user interface is not able to interpret properly.
This means that your long filename can only be handled at the command prompt level and you cannot drag and drop an illegal length filename within Windows Explorer.

Please simplify your folders and titles.

More information, please check the part of Maximum Path Length Limitation in the link below. Cai

I'm trying to copy a VHD (22g, dynamic I think...)

I tried richcopy. It says copy started, but then stops....

I saw someone mention xcopy /j, to achieve the unbuffered I/O perf. you get with richcopy...

it's running, but no indication as to how long it takes (EDIT: just finished, > 10 mins),

what's the syntax for single files?

Can't you just paste the path into the source?

(starts, and stops... any logs?)

A:how do I copy a BIG single file (using richcopy?) big file copy

Use this command if the VHD is sitting on C:

robocopy "C:\Users\yourName\VHD Folder" "S:\Storage Folder" *.* /COPY:DAT /E

Change yourname and replace VHD Folder with the name of the folder where the VHD resides. S:\Storage Folder is where you want to store it.

I'm hoping to take some of the information entered into a given form, and
have it copied and entered into the same fields in a second form. I'd also
like to have this action tied to a button on the initial form, which when
clicked first opens the second form then pastes the relevant information in.
Both forms are based on the same underlying table, but have slightly
different fields. However, the fields needing to be copied are those that are
identical between the two forms.

To further complicate matters, these forms actually occur as subforms on
parent forms, although different parent forms, so I’d like to have them open
the entire parent/child form combo. Here's an attempt to show the structure:

(these are linked by a key in tbl_Location linked to a foreign key in

--subfrm_StationBol (enters data into tbl_Station)

--subfrm_StationCam (enters data into tbl_Station)

So, when subfrm_StationBol is open, I’d like to have a button that when
pressed opens subfrm_StationCam and enters some of the same information that
was just entered into subfrm_StationBol.

I want the values from column G2 until the end of the data (the length varies month to month) from sheet (tester) to sheet (copy to upload WS) pasting starting from D13 until the end of the data.
I also want the same scenario except for (tester) column I2 till end of data pasted to sheet (copy to upload WS) column G13 till end of data.
Is it possible to combine both of these into one macro? As I mentioned the length of the data changes for both of these columns.

Try booting in Safe Mode and see if it is normal. If so then there may be a program that is messing up the clipboard. It may not be malware. It may just use the clipboard and have a bug. Process of elimination in that case.

If it doesn't work in Safe Mode then I would do a malware scan with MBAM free version.

In Outlook go to file--import/export--choose export to a file--pst and select your personal folder. It will then give you the location of this file. Then just point Second Copy to that file and your done. I use Second Copy and this is what i do to back up all my Outlook data

Annoyance: When I copy a file to another drive or portable media, windows drops the Summery tab and all its info from the properties dialog. When I use the copy command I get a message with the Heading 'Confirm Stream Loss' that says …
‘The file ”File Name” has extra information attached to it that might be lost if you continue copying. The contents of the file will not be affected. Information that might be lost includes:
Document Summary Info
Do you want to continue anyway?’

How can I copy a file without losing this info?
Does it require a registry hack?

I'm running XP home edition SP2

A:XP copy annoyance-loss of summary info

Apparently this is "expected and documented Windows behavior for any non-NTFS volume, including FAT 16, FAT 32" formatted target drive.

The document summary info is only kept within the NTFS formats, it is lost when copying to non NTFS or when emailing any attachment by default.

Just why you actually see the warning is the issue, I suspect it is related to a setting in anti-virus, firewall or similar. While the loss is normal, being told about it is not, as I see it.

Ive recently found an old copy of Windows 7 home premium in a drawer that I had installed on my old desktop computer.

I've peeled the licence sticker off that old PC and am hoping to be able to sell this on, as i dont use it any more.

The hard drive out of the old machine is now one of my external storage units.

Legally, can I sell this on? I didnt buy the copy as a standalone thing, but it was included in the price of the machine, so I dont see why i shouldnt be able to really.

Many thanks for your time.

Sorry, but no.

Since it came preinstalled on an OEM computer, it will be permanently tied to the motherboard of that specific PC and cannot be activated on any other computer.

One of my pc machines has died. If I take the primary drive out of that machine and put it it in a usb hard drive enclosure, can I just connect it to another machine thru the usb port and copy the data on it (not OS) to my working machine? Both machines are Windows XP. Or is there a better way?

Thank you for help.

A:copy info from a primary hard drive of a dead machine.

Yes you can! That is the easiest and best way to do it. When you attach your old drive to a USB enclosure or to use a USB Adapter, the drive comes up as another drive in my Computer. (if the HDD hasn't failed, it just can't boot.) Then you can copy your data to the new computer. You then can format the drive and use it as an external backup drive.

I'm in the process of repair/recovery of my machine (Dell Inspiron 8500 with Windows XP Home, Service Pack 2). I'm following exactly the instructions in:, but a problem has developed. The "software" file (which is the file that the original blue screen error message says is "corrupt, absent or not writable") will not copy to the new tmp directory to create the backup. My understanding from the article is that this backup file (software.bak) will later be used to restore correct settings for various software applications. Since I can't copy it, it appears that I am screwed, no? Or is there a way out somehow?

Thanks to anyone who's been there and can help...

BTW I have the XP installation disk that came with, and a diagnostics disk which I have not yet run.

A:Blue Screen: Registry File Failure; can't copy corrupted file to tmp directory

Never mind, I had it wrong--didn't read the document referred to above carefully enough. The procedure worked like a charm, and the document is very easy to read and entertaining to boot! (pun intended).

The document describes a procedure that closely follows a Microsoft KB document (which I now can't find) but does not contain any warning regarding whether the OS is an OEM (original equipment manufacture) install or not. The Microsoft doc says not to use the procedure on an OEM-installed OS, but I just did it on my Dell, so that warning seems to be incorrect.

Many many thanks for the help provided by this document and this site.

A:Error copying file or folder; cannot copy img the directory or file cannot be created

This has caught me more than once.

The problem is a limitation on the number of files and folders allowed in the root folder of a FAT16 file system (as for a memory card) of 512. (Note, this number is reduced much further if longer file names than 8 characters are used, as most people will want to).

When transferring the files onto the card, new files will be rejected when you hit this limit.

So keep your files in separate folders, so they are not all in the root folder.

For files and folders in root it might be worth keeping your filenames under 8 characters in length so you can use the full 512 files on root folder.

Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read from the Source File or Disk

I searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base and came up with only one article, Q224378. This article seems not to apply to my situation because it applies to Windows 2000 Server. I am running Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 2. I did attempt to install the fix that article Q224378 suggested anyway; but, I got an error message that I was attempting to upgrade a program that didn't exist on my system.

I have also learned that this error applies when copying from either of my SCSI CD-ROM drives, not when copying from hard disks or floppies.

• The program names each of the pictures with the exact same names, which is why they are stored in different directories, so they will not overwrite. The retention period on each individuals directory, pics and files is approximately 40 days.

I'm currently using Richcopy to move about 4TB worth of data from our colo facility (1000 miles away) to our office. And that data also gets routed overseas first before coming back (don't ask). Needless to say, connectivity while not bad, could be better.

The small files are zooming right along, the issue is the larger files (the ones that are hundreds of MB or even several GB).

From time to time, I briefly lose network connectivity for a second or two, when that happens, the files currently being copied abort and once connectivity is restored, Richcopy just moves on to the next files. So when Richcopy advertises that it 'resumes', it seems it is talking about resuming a file copy queue, and not resuming partially copied files. Those have to start over from the beginning.

Is there a tool similar to Richcopy with the functionality I'm looking for?

I have the game 'Crysis' on two backup DVD's. I had to put the installation files in a .rar and split them so I could back it up (I downloaded the game digitally from EA)

So when I insert disk 1 and try to copy 'Crysis.part1.rar' to D:/Crysis (D: is my data drive, C: is strictly the OS and maybe 2 or 3 applications installed on it) it copies most of it, but when it gets to '5 seconds remaining' it comes up with this error. It takes like 6 minutes to copy it and then it errors out when it's almost done! I've tried 3 times and the error popped up every time. The disk is spotless... I mean it looks brand new. Not even a speck of dust or any smudges at all.

Why am I getting this error?? I don't know what to do! If I can't copy it I'll have to redownload the entire 6gb installation package from EA, which will take probably 4-5 hours.

I am new to batch files and have read up a little on xcopy and robocopy.
We currently have a folder which new builds are copied and compressed to .zip files and stuck in a  folder. Dozens of zip files are created every day
What I want to do is the following:

I want to copy the newest zip file from folder 1 to folder 2 and extract it.

What is the simplest way to find and copy the newest zip file considering multiple zip files are created each day?

A:using a batch file i would like to copy the newest file to a new location.

Try this:
@echo off
for /F "delims=" %%a in ('dir  /b /od "d:\My Files\*.zip"') do set Youngest=%%a
xcopy /y "d:\My Files\%Youngest%" "Folder2\"

Hi, I have a file with no extension called simply, D:\file

I want to copy this to multiple locations, eg e:\file , f:\file

sometimes there will already be an older version, so I would like it to overwrite the file.
Is this possible with a bat file?
I tried a simple copy command in a bat file, but it wouldn't copy at all.

A:BAT file to copy file to multiple locations?

Have you tried 'xcopy' with the /y flag. This should copy the files and overwrite without it prompting you.... Would this suut your needs?

I have a user for whom shares and permissions on the server are working just fine.
I have another user for whom something is screwed up somewhere.
I've taken a directory that is shared and I've looked up the share and permissions for both. Identical.
But do this for 3,000 files/directories in a tree, no can do.
I'd like to take all the share and privilege information for Suzie and give them to Tom.
Can do?

A:Copy shares and permissions on file x to file z? Is this possible?

What usergroups are they assigned to? Also you say you have a server? Is it a domain controller?

I would copy the usergroups that are assigned to Suzie and give them to Tom rather than editing the share permissions themselves.

Just my opinion,

I used windirstat and noticed a large file, called goog-black-enchashm.cf1

It is in the tree

620.0 MB C:\Users\Kris_2\AppData\Local\Google\Google Desktop\4587bcbee7e1\safeweb\goog-black-enchashm.cf1

I use google, I have gmail and google earth, but I don't recall downloading anything else, especially something that takes 681 MB. I see it is in the tree above google earth, which I don't want to loose.

Do I need this file, or can I delete?

A:looking for info on what this file is

It appears to be part of Google Desktop Search and by the name I'd say it's some sort of cache for Google Safe Browsing results. I can't say whether or not deleting it would affect Google Earth, but I would guess that it wouldn't.

I have Windows Vista that I bought and have a key for, and is already activated.  I would like to keep a copy ready on a second hard drive (not a second machine) in case something goes wrong with it, which it has before, so I can just swap them.  Often, I do not have internet access.  Is there a file that stores the activation that I can copy or replace on the second drive so that I do not have to activate it on the 2nd install?  Thanks.

A:Info/how to regarding activation file

Are you familiar with disk cloning software? There are many free and paid products available that will make a complete image of your first drive to either an image file or the second drive itself, so you wouldn't have to install and activate Windows a second time.

I've ripped all my audio to WMP. The album info updates from the internet but is not always correct, as I'm sure you know. Sometimes the content is unknown. So, once ripped, I update manually. I think i've discovered this is best done through media player by editing track, artist, album etc. When I've tried doing it directly in the folders and files in 'my music' it seems to create a right mess. However, updating through WMP isn't plain sailing either, two of the most annoying problems are -

The updated info reverts to the original incorrect info
My files in 'my music' sometimes re-organize themselves (automatically) to reflect the changes I've made but often don't. This has led to an array of folders with files all over the place.

What, if anything, am I doing wrong? All I want to do is edit my audio info so it updates both in media player and the file locations - any advice is much appreciated and by the way, Hello

A:WMP 11 changing file info

Try using a tag manager. I use Tag&Rename, but there are also free ones. This updates the files themselves, and should solve the problem.

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps

I used the file summary info tab on all our ghost file to describe what the image is and also for revision control. However Recently I am required to copy the file to other parties via FTP rather than just copying them over the network. This has resulted in the summary information being lost. The FTP server is using NTFS so all i can assume is that FTP methodology of how a file is copied is differently to how a local network connection file copy is performed.

What I need to know is, is their a setting or a way of configuring the FTP server so that it keeps the file summary information?

Any help would appreciated

A:File summary info lost over FTP

I'm guessing there is not such an option. The summary info is stored in the NTFS stream which doesn't come along for the ride using FTP.

I have used the Norton Internet security program and anti-virus anti-spy ware for the last year. The personal information security part of it was pretty easy to use and I have all my user names and passwords for all my important sites in it. Now that my year is up I can no longer access my passwords without paying for another year. Since I've had a lot of problems with my email accounts getting hijacked and virus and Trojans infecting my laptop that Norton didn't catch or find I don't want to waist the money on them for another year and have gone to AVG. I did download a copy of my security file before it expired but its a .NPM file and I cant find any way to read it. Does anybody out there know where I can get a reader or some way to convert the .NPM file to something that I can read?

A:Personal info security NPM file

The .NPM file is a profile used by Norton Internet Security Suite as an identity safe profile. I checked at the Symantec web site and found a couple of topics asking similar questions, although they were still using Norton Products. As a safeguard, instructions are being sent privately rather than posted in public as discussed here. As such you probably need to check with the Norton folks yourself.

I use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink to back up movies.

The Explore function of my C drive reveals 6 ISO files,( icon a sheet of paper with upper right corner turned down and a disc in the center.)

I recognize most of the titles as those of folders I created on the desktop last year to temporarily store ripped videos from Decrypter for Shrink to shrink.

After burning, I deleted the desktop folder with the files.

Each ISO file on the C drive has a discrete date of creation and size, mostly in the 3.5-4.0 gig range.

When I open one of the files with Decrypter, each one has the same size and time, different from the info in the little box on the Explore screen

When I open any of them in Win DVD, the last movie backed up plays.

What is this about, and can I delete all of these ISO files?

In the same Explore window, there is a Folder labled DVD_VIDEO_RECORDER created 6/6/06 Read only 1.36 gig

Inside is VIDEO_TS file

Inside that are these files:

VTS_01_0 IFO file 38 KB
VTS_01_1 VOB files 1,048,512 KB
VTS_01_2 VOB files 387,254 KB

When I try to play these in WinDVD, the menu on the right has an exclamation point and nothing plays.

Don't know if or how I created this folder, what it is, or if it can it be deleted. (This might be a folder of a movie that Shrink could never find since I did not name it properly.)

Apologies for the length, I am not sure what is relevant info, and what blindingly obvious to everyone but me. If this is an improper place to post, pl... Read more

Hi there,

I know exactly where to go in IE9 to attempt to make the change I require, concerning : To turn off the Information bar for file downloads

However, when I click on the appropriate TOOLS, INTERNET OPTIONS, SECURITY Tab, CUSTOM LEVEL, in IE9 there doesn't appear to be any sub-heading :
Automatic prompting for file downloads ... under the main heading DOWNLOADS (only File Download & Font Download are listed as options to make changes in).

In the HELP section of IE, the exact instructions read:
''To turn off the Information bar for file downloads, scroll to the Downloads section of the list, and then, under Automatic prompting for file downloads, click Enable.''

If you agree that this sub-heading DOESN'T EXIST IN THE 1ST PLACE, how else can I go about getting rid of the Info. Bar & subsequent messages which pop-up on-screen every time I download .txt files ?

The 2 messages which appear continually, are:

Do you want to open or save .........(such and such a file) from ...... (. Open Save Cancel x

What do you want to do with (file name/no)
Open Save Save as

I'd appreciate it if you can help me with the correct settings in order to get rid of these messages in particular, and Info. Bar in general, popping up every time I need to d/load a file.

Thanks in advance.

A:IE9-To turn off the Info Bar for file downloads

The help file instructions you refer to apply to IE8 not IE9 (I just checked, I've got IE8 on my laptop & IE9-RTM on my new PC). But when you invoke 'Help' in IE9 you get the same instructions as IE8 concerning the Information Bar.

It seems in IE9 that particular option "Automatic prompting for file downloads" has been removed. Probably removed to ensure that the security offered by the information bar feature is always in place & can only be bypassed by using a different web-browser.
That's just a guess of course, but a plausible one.

Unless Microsoft has omitted that option in IE9 by mistake & issues a hotfix to put it right at some later date.

How genuine is this when they say 'no personal details r mentioned in the file'?

If you can't beat them, join them, my mother always said.
Hope she was right.

I really like W7 and it is and will be the OS I use.

However there are some things, mainly GUI quirks that should be addressed by MS.

1. The status bar.
It has grown three times in height, and while the bar is quite informative in case of certain files, yet in most case it uses less than 20% of the space.
Even worse is the fact that for folders it doesn't show the crucial information one would like to get.
In fact the only way to get it is right click/properties.

When you click on a folder in the right pane it will merely show:
the name of the folder,
the fact it is a filefolder, (really?)
when it was last edited

When you click on a folder in the left pane it only shows how many items are in it.

If the folder is shared, the bar will show it's shared and with whom.

And the shared with whom is erroneous, because it says it's shared with myself, while in fact in the shared settings it's shared with Everyone.

The fact the folder is shared should be represented by a shared icon overlay so it's instantly recognizable, but MS decided an administrator would be much happier clicking on ever single folder in the tree.

Come on MS, it's a statusbar, I want to see the status of the folder,
not just the name and when it was last edited.

Should be aware of the performance impact esp. on larger folders. Having the size taken up by the contents of the folder and the number of files would require Explorer to go though the folder's tree and calculate it all for display. Actually having in the status bar details pane whatever you call it, will be a major hit to performance and efficiency. Can you imagine Explorer trying to go though the folder, but oh you moved to another folder before it finished.

The Old New Thing : Why doesn't Explorer show recursive directory size as an optional column?

I have a huge collection of MTV videos, or music videos that I clipped down to MTV size, or got off of you tube.

When I click properties, I see data fields that show name, album, genre etc...

Is there a program for xp, that allows me to click on a file, and change its info, without having to go thru all the extra clicks that XP itself would require me to do to save the new info?

I think those are called PIF files? Not even sure what they are called.. any help appreciated!

I recently re-loaded my entire music library in WMP. Specifically, I cleared out the existing WMP file library and then reloaded all the files because I had shifted file locations on my computer and I was getting broken file links and duplicate listings in the WMP file library. Somehow, this process deleted every single file info tag. To correct this I tried actually reloading the music on the computer using backed up files - no dice.

I then switched over to Real Player. All the tags are present and accounted for. WMP is still not playing ball with me, and I'm not about to waste dozens or hundreds of hours manually re-inputting the file tag info for all my songs.

Does anyone know what might have happened, and how I can reverse it short of updating the info by hand? Real Player is OK but I like that I can minimize WMP to my tool bar.

I run XP pro and many of my user rights are administratively disabled, so my ability to change certain settings may be limited. I also don't have installation privileges so I can't download and run unauthorized programs.

Hi, I have made a bootable ISO file for XP with other applications for myself.

However is there any way I can edit the registered user information somewhere in the ISO before the software is burned to DVD and ran on pc.

I know that you can run regedit when the software has been loaded and edit the MicrosoftWindowsNTCurrentversionRegistered user.

I need to know if it is possible to change at ISO stage.

Thanks in advance

Help! I am trying to fill out a college financial form. It is supposed to be filled out online and then filed and processed by the receipient. I saved it to Acrobat 8 and it looks fine but when I left click the mouse over the box to "fill in" the "click" doesn't work. Neither does right click. How can I fill it in? How do you enter info on a pdf file?

A:How to enter info on a saved pdf file Acrobat Reader 8

You may have to fill out the form while it is "online" instead of saving it and then filling it out.

Is there any sort of warning and/or information at the top of the form that says whether or not you can save a copy? Some online forms do not allow you to save a copy to your hard drive. You must fill it out, print it, and scan it.

Hello everybody -

My assignment is to develop a batch file that our logon script can call on to satisfy the following condition:

If the User Information for Office 2010 ( HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\UserInfo ) equals
the local admin default "UserInfo"

go to ldap/active directory and, using the client's "logon name", find the client in ldap and use their "Display Name" as the value for the String "UserName" in HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\UserInfo

I found this bit of code to get me started... but this code doesn't "call out to active directory"

reg add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\Common\UserInfo /v UserName /d %username% /f

Would greatly appreciate any suggestions, pointers etc... to help me out

Thank you very much and have a great Friday

I have been working on this issue for months and have searched Google and numerous forums. I hope someone can help me.

I had installed a program that, when I placed my mouse cursor over a file, like an mp3 file, it open a tiny panel or balloon that showed the ID tag of the file. Suddenly, that balloon did not open. I tried reinstalling the program but it still didn't open. I feel that this is a Windows problem. Because, even without the software that shows the full ID tag, there is a tiny window with a little bit of information when I place the cursor over the file.

The balloon window does work in my Windows XP Pro, when I point to the icons in the system tray at the bottom of my well as with the open program titles at the bottom. But as for files, there is no such popup balloon.

I am hoping that someone can help me or direct me to where I might find help.

Now there is lot of info recorded as audio notes & I want to give them some description & author.

In windows 7 explorer, I have enabled the description, comment & author tabs but how do I actually add author & description to these .amr files? These changes (if possible) should be viewable on my laptop or any other computer too.

Is it possible to do that in windows if not is there any other freeware utility which can do the same?

Okay, when I go into the task manager to start a new process I click "new task" and from there when I type "C for example" I'll get a list of all files I've accessed, I would really appreciate knowing how to clear this list because I consider it a security issue and a privacy issue. Don't worry if you think the answer is too complicated because I know how to edit the registry, etc, if it calls for it.

P.S. restarting my computer doesn't fix it.

A:How do I clear task manager recent file info?

Hi, welcome to TSF.

The values are stored at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\RunMRU

Delete the ones you don't want, then restarted the computer. They should be gone.

Hope this helps.

I recently bought a Lexar 4 GB jump drive intending to use it as a backup for a documents folder with 3 GB of data.

When I try to copy the folder, the copying starts but a second or two later I get a message "Error Copying File or Folder---Cannot Copy File".

A Lexar technician went through various operations and tests (including reformatting) with me and his conclusion is that one or more of the files is/are corrupted. (We tried to copy the folder to my C drive and got the same error message.)

There are a lot of sub-folders and I suppose I could go through one by one and find which ones won't copy but is there a simpler way of locating the file(s) that are corrupted and correcting them?

Thanks so much!

A:Cannot copy file

Well, I don't know about a "much simpler way", but you don't have to go thru one by one. Basically, you can select half of the folders >copy and paste > if it goes thru fine, then it's not in that half.

So you're left with the "other" half, just select half of that...well, you get the picture.

That's basically what I did when I was trying to locate a corrupted video file. It didn't take too long.

Here is my problem

My previous OS was Win 98. My HD was 80 Gb partitioned in to the following C: 20Gb, D: E: F: G: H: I: 10Gb each.

I formatted C: in NTFS and clean installed XP pro.
All the other partitions are FAT32.

I am trying to copy a 4Mb .exe file from a CD-r onto one of the partitions, but I keep getting an error message

"Cannot copy file invalid MS-DOS function"

In explorer if I right click -> properties on any folder the folder attributes are set to Read Only. I set the attribute to Archive or remove the Read Only but this doesn't to work. The attribute is always reset to Read Only.

I log on as administrator but makes no difference.

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this site, I have a problem and I hope you guys can help me out.

I usually backup my weeks work on Friday afternoons. What I do is run a "search" for all files created or modified within the last 7 days and then "copy" all relevant files to a folder on an external hard drive, and then burn a CD.

Everynow and then, I get the following message. "Cannot Copy File: Cannot Read From the Source File or Disk"

Do you guys know why this happens? There are no problems with me copying and dragging files individually over to the new folder, but the problem arises when i copy a bunch over.

Last night, I ended dragging my entire work folder (21GBs) onto the external hard drive. It took a few hours, but it worked.

This morning, I was able to run a search for all documents and files that were created or modified over the past week. But when I tried to copy only those files to a separate folder I again ran into this error message.

Does anybody out there know what's going on? Or better yet, does anyone out there have a better way of backing your week's work?

Thomas Lee

A:Cannot Copy File

Microsoft Word (for example) locks current temporary files (in your C:\Documents & Settings\{your username}\Local Settings\Temp file and may not allow you to copy them.

When "Copy", "Move", or "Delete" runs across these files, it quits the operation.

Other programs may have "locked files" in other locations.

If you are on XP and if you want a simple backup, use Windows' NTBACKUP. Just go to your START menu, choose RUN and type in NTBACKUP. Be sure to look at the "options" settings.

It provides for full backups; differential backups (all files changed since last full backup); incremental backups(all files changed since your last incremental backup) and for copy (just a copy - doesn't set archive bits.

I'm sure others will reply with comments of their favorite backup programs.
