Is there a way to gauge a PC system's gaming ability?

Since video cards and add-on programs (Direct X, etc) are so fundamental to game play, if would be nice to have a utility that would give a yes or no on the question "Will this game work on my computer?"

Bottom line is I don't know if my PC is 3D, GL rendering or what anymore since video card evolution is non-stop. A utility program to scan the computer's capability would help.

That's actually built into Directx.

Go to Start, Run type in dxdiag and hit enter.

If that doesn't work, then do a search on your system for dxdiag and open it when you find it.

I have three HD Diagnostic Utility programs for SMART Test on my HDs.
They are HDTune,Speedfan and HDDScan.

The problem:
1.When I startup my PC one of my HD has lower "Raw Read Error Rate" Current Value before the last shutdown. (Example: After Startup:110, Before:115).

2.If I used HDTune and Speedfan, the Value is 110 then I used HDDScan the value increased into 115 again. After that I used HDTune and Speedfan again, the Value is 115 now.

3.This weird problem also applied on "Hardware ECC Recovered" attribute.

Do you know what could caused this -> Why using HDDScan makes "Raw Read Error Rate" Current Value Increase? Could this indicate a problem on my HDs/another Hardware?

I think question two should be posted in Hardware subforum, but I write in this subforum because I think it mostly software related.

More and more, I am faced with hardware problems (as opposed to malware or OS corruption) on computers I'm asked to diagnose.

Can anyone recommend or suggest a good Hardware diagnostic utility or utilities that will make my job easier? At this point, going the old route of unhooking one component at a time (or unhooking all and adding one back in at a time) is taking its toll on me. Spending $$ on a good reliable software tool that can be run from a USB drive, CD, or installed and uninstalled for troubleshooting multiple systems is warranted.

Any help is appreciated. Many thanks.

I received a lot of helpful ideas from my last posting, just none of them seemed to fix the problem. Windows won't boot in any way shape or form. It almost always just restarts again before even getting to the black screen with the windows xp logo and loading bar.

I flashed the BIOS with the appropriate file for my board and chipset. Went fine.

I ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic Utility and everything passed.

I ran the Maxtor Powermax HD Diagnostic tool and everything passed.

Sometimes before it restarts after a failed boot a blue screen comes up with a Stop error. This error is usually a different hexidecimal code each time. I can only read this screen when booting from the XP CD. It usually says DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Stop: 0xD1

I really don't know what else to do. I can't get to the screen in the XP CD to format and reinstall. I got to it once and chose Recovery Console but that didn't even load system just restarted.

I just tried disabling L2 cache and BIOS cache. Still no luck.

Please Help!

Hello all. I'm currently talking to you from Safe Mode in Windows 7 32 bit.

I've been running Windows 7 for quite some time now and I haven't run across any hiccups like with the previous versions of Windows... until now.
I recently bought a copy of Star Craft 2 from Gamestop. Doing this allows you to be in the beta program... so I figured "Oh, good stuff".

I tried to patch the program and I received an error during the patch process. To make a long story short, Blizzard informed me that I should run the Windows 7 memory diagnostic tool to make sure that my RAM wasn't at fault, using the extended test. I figured "Ok, no problem".

I ran the tool, selected "Save work and restart the system".

The tool loads up and starts to run with 1 pass with a "basic" check. I realized after about 10 minutes into the check that I could hit F10 and change the options. I hit F10, changed the test to Extended and hit continue. The screen refreshed VERY slowly with the updated changes, except the progress went from 10% complete to look like "_%" for every spot that could have a % at it.

I thought that was odd, so I hit the Exit button.

The system rebooted.

The system started to hang at the BIOS POST screen a little longer that it usually does... normally it only stays there about 2-3 seconds... it now stays there for around 10-15 seconds.

The Windows 7 logo starts to load and then freezes half way through loading graphic. The system han... Read more

Running XP home

I was trying to network 2 home computers together. I ran the network wizard to do this.
When the computer rebooted I got this message on the screen.

You have used System Configuration Utility to make changes to the way Windows Starts.
The System Configuration Utility is currently in Diagnostic or Selective Startup mode, causing this message to be displayed and the utility to run every time Winddows starts.
Choose the Normal Startup mode on the General Tab to start Windows in nomal mode and undo the changes you made using System Configuration Utility when Windows starts.

The problem is I don't know how to undo this. I tried doing a system restore from the only restore point I had. This is a brand new system just got it yesterday.

I was hoping I could network it to my all Win98 machine to access my files easily. Didn't work.

I started experiencing issues on my computer today.  The first thing I noticed was that my power system tray icon was missing.  I looked to make sure that it was set to display and despite checking that was set to display, the icon was missing.  At this time, I was at a hotel and wasn't attempting to connect to the internet.

When I got home this evening, my computer would not load a web page despite the fact that my connection icon stated that I was connected to my home wireless connection.  I troubleshot the problem and it states that "The Diagnostics Policy Service is not running." I performed a google search of how to start the policy service and it appears to be enabled.  At this point, I ran a system restore.  The system restore brought back my power system icon, but did not resolve the connectivity issue.

Hello,

[I'm using Windows XP, without the latest SP2.]

Yesterday I uninstalled some software. Today, when my computer starts, it is not starting in "Normal" mode.

I would like to remove 2 Startup Items from the list that comes up when I look at:
START --> RUN --> msconfig
System Configuration Utilitites -->Start Tab

One of these items (programs) is a graphics pad driver -- I returned the pad (and uninstalled the software), so I don't need this at all.

The other item is very useful PDF software, but I don't need it to load every time my computer starts.

Thanks very much for help about this!

Guys,

My desktop is a new OEM Dell based PC. My questions are about the Dell System Utility Scanner that runs every 3-4 days in the right-hand corner of the System Tray taskbar. It looks like a gear wheel:

1.) What does this thing actually do? Is it safe to uninstall from Control Panel? What would I be removing in Control Panel if I choose to uninstall this utility?

2.) I ask this because approximately every three months, a small quarter inch white square appears around the left-hand corner of the desktop. It's exact location can vary a bit.

3.) Rebooting removes this little square, which has no impact on computer performance when it is there.

4.) On-line users have noted that by removing the Dell System Utility from the computer, it removes this square. Some have also reported turning off the screen saver as well.

5.) If any of you with new Dell PC's have seen this little white square in conjunction with the Dell System information Utility please post what you have done to get rid of it for good.

I want to create a bootable clone of my windows drive. I want to reinstall my whole system then clone it, so the next time I do a clean reinstall I can just go from this clone instead of having to actually reinstall and reconfigure everything. However I do not know of a program that can clone my drive and be bootable. I have tried Acronis true image, I have tried driveimage xml, I have tried paragon and a couple others, but none of them have produced a cloned drive which is BOOTABLE. Boot fails every time, and certain programs like acronis don't even make a cloned drive, they make some proprietary backup file which needs to be decompressed, and therefore is fundamentally useless, since I can't access any of the data without having that original program to decompress it. I want a program that will create an exact copy of my windows drive, so that I, theoretically, can remove my original windows drive from the machine, and still be able to boot from this clone in a perfectly seamless and functional manner.

Does anyone know of a software which can do this? Thanks!!

A:Does anyone know of a utility to create a bootable clone of a Windows system?

I don't have much faith in software imaging solutions either after simulating an emergency with Acronis and finding that it didn't work. Maybe I did something wrong but this type of software is not something most people are going to be practised at using. I have a hard drive copy station and made a direct copy to an extra hard drive for my main system. Occasionally I connect up that drive and make sure Windows is updated then revert to the original drive. It's not perfect but I feel more secure knowing that I can switch the connectors in my desktop and engage a useable drive if disastrer strikes. A copy station will only work to mirror a hard drive to another hard drive of at least equal storage capacity to the first one.

Ok so my problem here might seem a little complex but im going to go ahead and type it all out in hopes someone can help me out. Here goes:

Ok so I have a 160 GB HDD that Win7 is installed on. I have a slave drive that's 320 GB that has Windows XP on it. (I boot from the 160 GB Win7 HDD).

I have an 80 GB laptop HDD with USB enclosure which I want to use to make a complete disc image of using the Win7 backup utility from the Control Panel. The Win7 HDD has 70 GB used on it so I have enough space on the external laptop HDD.

So this all sounds good like ok what is the problem? So here's the problem...Win7 Backup Utility automatically keeps highlighted the HDD's which need to be imaged for Windows to funtion properly (according to the backup utility). So when I click the Backup and Restore option in the Control Panel and then click Create a system image, I choose my external HDD (the 80 GB laptop HDD in USB enclosure) and I hit next. On the next screen it has the Win7 160 GB HDD and the 320 GB Windows XP HDD checked and they are greyed out so I can not click either of them. So now my total backup is going to take up alot more space than the 80 GB HDD external can hold.

Solution I tried:

I shut down and unplugged the Win XP HDD from the MoBo and attempted to start the computer up. I received an error telling me that I have no active boot partition or something along those lines can't remember it word for word. So I shut down again and plugged the XP HDD ba... Read more

Expert needed. REF: Windows Memory Diagnostic

I copied this from another TechGuy forum, because I realized later that this may be the more appropriate forum for this issue.

---
I'm hoping for an expert's opinion on these several issues. Very sorry to put so many issues into one request, but they are all related to my issues.

1. I am encountering FATAL EXCEPTIONS while playing the game World of Warcraft (WoW).

The game crashes, then reports:

Error #132 (0x85100084) FATAL EXCEPTION
Exeception: 0xC0000005 at 0018:4fe59dda at (memory location): "0x0d007c1c"

I have run Microsoft's Memory Diagnostic tool several times. I've run it in 'normal' and also in 'extended,' yet it reports "passed" on my two strips of (1MB each) System RAM.

My first question is:

Could my problem within the game be with my VIDEO RAM instead of my System RAM? Should I be able to tell by the memory address given in the error message?

Secondly, my other comment is about the Windows Memory Diagnostic....

During the scan phase of TEST 7 of 11 (MATS+ (Cache Disabled), the scan slows down to an incredibly slow speed. It took over 1 hour to complete that single test (in Extended mode). Is that to be expected, or does that slow speed denote an error with my RAM?

Any expert with knowledge of these issues is welcome to help me, if so desired. I'll appreciate it, since I've struggled for 2 weeks with this issue in WoW.

I'm running vista on my hp pavilion dv6 notebook pc with all factory stuff.

My problem started the other day between my 3 year old and I, she I assume locked the keyboard and I tried the command prompts to unlock it. After failing to unlock the keyboard I did a restart and the system won't come back! I've recently acquired a boot disk that doesn't have the windows operating system on it just the fix it portion. After running the boot disk I am stuck with only being able to use the command prompt option having no restore points on my system.

I've tried several codes I found in another question but my c drive is comng up as a removable drive with x being my main and all the codes require c drive - after trying unsuccessfully to simply type the codes with x instead of c I am having no luck. I typed the codes in I get an error that the parameter is incorrect (0x80070057) and asked to close system restore.

It's not looking good I admit but I can not afford to buy a new system such as windows 7 or a new computer and would really hope that I can get them photos on my hard drive some how..

first thing I hope I'am in the right area to post my problem, I have a problem with the system diagnostics report on my pc.  I have done all I know to do.  I ran a system report and health report and the error message says the security center has not recorded an anti-virus product.

Verify that an anti-virus product is installed and functioning, configure security center and anti virus status.

I have checked the anti virus on my pc and says is up to date and says in the security section that all is on and connected.

I don't know what else to do. I have tried to find a solution in windows website.

Thanks for reading

What OS are you running? (XP, ,Vista, 7...etc.)
What AV are you using? (Norton, McAfee, Avast...MSE, etc)
Is this something that has only recently started? If so, what is new or different on your system?
Have you scanned for malware or noticed any malware like activity on your system?

I am looking for a "1 stop shop" program that will do a detailed scan of my entire system and locate any problems or opportunities and suggest how to correct them or what may be the cause of the error or slowdown. Freeware would be great, but I don't mind paying for it if it is worth the money.
Any suggestions?

Thanks

Hi guys !!

The other day I opened my msconfig and in the Startup Items I saw a "Turok Registration"
This item was unchecked... but... The thing here is that I don't have anymore that game installed in my computer !!

That's why I called (ghost) "startup item"

I asked to the boyfriend of my roommate to uninstall that Game
So then later, I checked and it was uninstalled... but I still see that "Turok Registration" is in my Startup Items

I try to search in the path of "Command" so i can delete that entry, but i don't find any of those files it says in there, following that path...so how can I delete that entry form my Start up .

Notice that I want to "Delete" for complete that entry no just disable it , because I don't have that game in my computer.

Thansk very much for help and pls. forgive my ignorance at this and my English, not my first language.

Hi,

decided to run a system diagnostic on my Dell PC today - just because it had never been done on this particular PC. Received a msg telling me Microsoft .Net Framework 4 Full would be required in order to install the Dell Diag. We have the lesser version .Net Framework 4 Client Profile. Was about to install the full version over top of Client Profile when it occurred to me that perhaps there was a better System Diagnostic tool out there anyway.

In fact it looks like there are quite a few. So I am here for recommendations. Would prefer not to pay for one if possible but certainly don't want to be cheap since this is our primary PC. Or should I install the Full Version of .Net Framework 4 & stick with the Dell diag?

Perhaps a little more info:

I ran something called Free PC Health Scan on the Dell website which then called into play iolo System Mechanic & it found a number of issues. Two items removed from startup which I already knew about & was going to remove myself when was certain there would be no negative repercussion. But what concerns me:

1) are the over 100 registry entries it flagged - I do run CCleaner several times throughout the week to remove old/left over/invalid registry entries. But apparently iolo found around 104 that need to be removed? & yes I know we're not supposed to muck about with registry but have been letting Norton, McAfee & CCleaner do their thing for a number of years now & to my knowledge have not damaged... A:Dell System Diagnostic, or something else?

Dell used to have hardware diagnostics on the hard drive, accessed by F12 at power on? Have they stopped that?

However, all the "repair" programs such as System Mechanic and the one advertised on TV, etc that fix and speed up your PC and remove hundreds of registry entries are very suspect. Most techies compare them to "snake oil".

Ccleaner has a registry scanner program, if you really want to do that. Its the least intrusive.

I have run a w7 home premium system diagnostic report which contains a couple of errors and warnings. I dont really understand what the errors mean or what to do about them.

Having looked at my event viewer I see many errors and warnings listed, again I dont know what these mean or if I need to do anything.

Is there anybody out there prepared to take a look at these for me and tell me if i need to do anything. If so please tell me how to save and post the info and I will gladly do so.

Thanx

A:System diagnostic report

What specific errors are you seen in the diagnostic report?

Regarding Event Viewer:

If I spent 10 minutes investigating each different error found in Event Viewer, I would never have time to eat or sleep. If you can't or won't ignore most of them, you are destined to have a full time job, working for EV.

I look at it maybe once a year and would never look there if my system was running well.

Hi,

I ran the System Diagnostics Report that is generated in Computer Management under Performance--Data Collector Sets--System?System Diagnostics. Here is a screenshot summary of the results (the full System Diagnostic Report is 123 pages long).

My system appears to be running fairly smoothly so I was surprised by these results. No other programs were running during the test. The UEFI diagnostic shows no hardware problems and I doubt that all of the poor results are valid.

Someone at Microsoft said that incompatibility issue(s) might cause these results. However, they would give me no further insights and said I would have to pay to have them figure it out. In another forum, I was told that the results are just Windows internal reporting and to ignore them. However, this makes no sense.

There are two Abnormally Stopped System Services: Interactive Services Detection (UIODetect) and Windows Encryption Provider Host Service (WEPHOSTSVC). What should be the settings for these services?

Question: How can I determine what, if anything, is conflicting with the diagnostic test?

Question: Could the problem be a flaw in the diagnostics test itself, rather than any problems with my system?

Question: If there really are some issues, how can they be resolved?

I hope that someone can help me understand what to do with these results. I would be happy to share the full diagnostics report as well as the associated system performance report.

hey, a friend reccomended me this website after he tried to help me get rid of this problem himself, but everything he tried hasn't gotten rid of the issues.

last night i was on my machine (windows xp) and it threw a few warning boxes up, then it shut down. i turned it back on and all the icons on my desktop were gone, and one of those fake virus scanners started running, calling itself system diagnostic. it's also hidden everything in my program files (except if i download something new)

so i've tried all the usual fixes (according to friend) which was running rkill, then malware bytes and super anti spyware. both find errors and apparently remove them, but on system restart the problem still occurs. also when these programs say the virus is gone, the desktop icons and program files are still gone. something which i read will return after this virus is deleted.

help?

Yesterday,

As part of my monthly maintenance checks I ran Disk Clean up and it took so long to complete that it was almost like a drive-defrag. I had to cancel out of it at least once I try it in safe mode because I was sure it was hanging. Only it wasn't hanging, just running slow. The part that took forever was NOT the pre part where it estimates how much space you can free on the disk. That was done in a few minutes. It was when running Disk Clean up and it was doing the "Compress Old Files" part. It took at least 45 minutes. When I went into Safe Mode, as part of Disk Clean Up, I check something that I think was called "Temporary Index File Searching." that I did not see before in Normal Mode. Why would Disk Clean Up take 3-5 times longer to complete than usual?

Hi,

I have a Toshiba a200 Satellite laptop running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit (which I recently installed as a fresh install to try and solve my problems). I have several problems, and I'm not sure if they are related or seperate to each other. Here they are:

Often, when I am away from the computer, even if it's only for a few minutes, when I come back it is frozen -- the screen looks normal, but the mouse won't move and the system won't respond to Ctrl + Alt + Delete. I have to hold down the power button until it goes black, and then reboot.
Often when I reboot, and almost always when I boot up for the first time of a morning, the computer fails to start -- it will get to a black screen and freeze forever, or it will freeze on the "Windows is Starting Up" screen, and I will have to hold down the power button again to shut it off. It will usually start after the second or third time.
Sometimes, firefox (and sometimes other programs too) stops responding for about 30 seconds, and then comes back fine. It's not that bad, but it seems a bit odd. This is just a minor annoyance -- the other two problems are more worrying.
I've attached a zipped folder containing the reports from the SF Diagnostic Tool.

I hope someone can help me. I'd be really grateful.

Thanks,

Matt

Not sure if this will help, but the system has frozen twice in the past few hours, and this error occured both times in the event viewer:

it says that the error fixes itself when i restart my comp which i did a few times. i am puzzled at why this is showing up and worried it might fry my computer. my desktop gave me a black screen saying drive failure was imminent and my laptop is all i have left, and can not afford another one. so please tell me how i can solve this problem if i can. thank you!

A:norton 360 operating system diagnostic puzzle

Norton 360 is anti-virus/security software and your question has nothing to do with that, so why is that in the title? Am I missing something?

Hard Drive Failure is imminent message is usually from SMART and frequently it is correct meaning that the hardware of the hard drive is failing (not the software). That might also explain chronic hard drive errors that are "fixed" and then reoccur at reboot.

If the desktop only boots to black screen then how did you get the text of the error message (above)?

What happens when you turn the desktop on?

Is the laptop also broke? If so, start a separate thread for that, otherwise things will get VERY confusing.

Problem: When I transcribe music, I have to have two programs on the screen at once to see everything. Therefore every time I do this, I have to manually open both programs, and resize them perfectly so that EVERYTHING in both programs is visible... it's a very tedious task.

I'm looking for a program that can record actions in windows, and 'replay' them.
So I could start the 'recording' if you will, open the programs and size everything the way I want it, and then save the whole operation. Next time I transcribe, voila! Just open the program and everything automates itself.

Anything out there like this? (I'm also open to the idea of writing a bat file that opens both programs, but I can't figure out how to have it resize windows)

1) Some applications I normally run are having strange issues with the GUI's. Words missing from buttons but the button still being there, font and window coloring changes for some parts of the interface

The problem is, when I open or extract it in Winzip, it warns me that all the filenames in the archive are invalid. The filenames all have ":" in them, since the filenames includes Mac addresses in the name. This character is legal for filenames in Linux but not in Windows.

Is there any Windows utility that will extract the files from the archive and remove the illegal characters as it goes along, or am I going to have to go to a Linux machine to extract this archive?

I am trying to understand if the Microsoft XP Home Edition Backup Utility that I installed from my installation CD is creating a corrupt .bkf file after I use that utility. After I located the NTbackup.msi folder, installed it, and starting it, I selected the boxes for the personal files I wanted to back up and then save in a destination I chose on the hard drive.
After exiting the Back Up utility, I went to that destination, and all of the files I checked weren't there. There was just one .bkf file that got saved. All of the backed-up personal files I checked off while I was running the Back Up Utility had apparently never made it to the destination I chose, but this one particular file, which has that type of icon that opens with an 'unknown application' was there.
Does this mean that the .bkf file I saved using the utility is corrupted? I can't find anywhere in all of the Microsoft knowledge Base library if this is how the file is supposed to be saved in Windows XP Home Edition on the hard drive.
If this file isn't corrupted, how then do I upload all of the personal files onto a CD if wanted to from this one .bkf file because the file that got saved doesn't open?

Recently migrated from XP Pro to Win 7 Home Prem. 64, I used CC w/enhancer, Auslogic products, Avast, Spybot and Fix it Utilities for keeping my system running smoothly. With Win 7 I have added Malwarebytes, I am not sure I want to purchase the new ver. of Fix it or look for another similar Utility, the old ver. of Fix it I used with XP worked great, never had any problems, but it is not compatible with Win. 7 -

Looking for some suggestions, I have check out Glary Utilities and System Mech., but still leaning toward Fix it - what do you guys think ?

Thanks

Joe

Either there is no anti-virus product installed or it is not recognised. This is on windows 7. A new pc only a few weeks old installed Norton 2010 internet security which is working ok. So I believe I am covered how do I configure security centre to recognise this?

A:diagnostic results say the security system is unable to identify an active anti virus

After running the System Health Report from here;

System Health Report

......at the System Diagnostic Report, I get a warning advising that the scan failed to detect running anti-virus, anti-spyware etc. protection, here -

......and yet at Start>Control Panel>Security Centre, all protection requirements are shown as up and running, here -

......is there any way that I can get the scan to recognise the Security protection setup, and so include it in the System Diagnostic Report?

I've had no problems with viruses, malware or spyware. This is purely an administrative issue to try and get the System Diagnostic Report to give a true account of the system.

A:System Health [Diagnostic] Report doesn't recognise avast! anti-virus, as installed.

Same here. If it doesn't recognise Norton 360 I think its a glitch. If security centre is satisfied then all is fine, otherwise it would be complaining.

I disabled some of the items in my Start Menu with the help of answersthatwork.com as a guide. After I was all finished with that, I clicked Apply then Close or Exit? Rebooted, then went back to see if what I had unchecked stayed unchecked and it didn't. I've done this twice and every time I uncheck unwanted items, apply and reboot it seems to reset itself and check everything again ? Does anyone know why this is happening?
Also, the answersthatwork. seems like a good program but being the tight wad that I am I was wondering if their was any programs like this for free?

I have XP, IE6, and M Office 2003.

I do run>MSconfig and msconfig comes up. I deselect several programs in the startup and services tabs and exit, so the window comes up saying I have to restart my computer for the changes to take effect. I click restart and the computer reboots. On my desktop comes a window about the System Configuration Utility and how some things have changed. A large section of the window is missing, so that the extreme bottom end of the window is a checkable box that says "Do not show this message again" which I select. However, this System Configuration Utility window pops up every time I boot up my computer. But when I put the computer back in normal mode, the window doesn't pop up on reboots. What's going on?

I was infected by 6 false trojan alerts. I ran Malwarebytes and it caught them and removed them but on my System Configuration Utility- Startup, there are two items. One begins with ~tmph and the other one starts with "a" and I can't read the whole address. I unchecked both but how do I get rid of them and how can I see the whole address? They are both unframiliar to me.

MSCONFIG.EXE is a troubleshooting tool - not a fixing tool.First, re-enable them in MSCONFIG, then use this free tool to locate them and disable/delete them: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/sysintern...s/Autoruns.mspxIf you have difficulties with this tool, post back and we'll see if we can get the address for another one from garmanma.

What my question is-are there any programs out there to help tweak performance. I am more of a hardware junky than I am into OC'ing. Just have no interest, and MHO is I know just enough about OC'ing to do something stupid.

I am mostly looking for any utilities that will in some way increase performance, or make it easier to tweak performance. I have always been a do-it-yourselfer, and I just feel my system is not performing to my liking, performance-wise.

I browsed the downloads section-but that won't tell me necessarily what is good and whats not. Basically, what are some tweak programs and utilities that the people of this forum recommend?

A:System Utility Tweakers and Such

While I'm not into overclocking, here are some programs I have used for general system performance. X-Setup works quite well, it is shareware, but you can get a demo at the link I provided. If you want a free program, try TuneXP. It works very well also. Bear in mind that all these programs bear a certain amount of risk, be sure and back up your registry before you start, in case somthing goes wrong.

And if you are like me and are really feeling brave, you can do a lot of what these programs do manually. A good place to look for manual tweaks is at TweakHound's site. Again if you go this route, remember to back up first, you won't be sorry.

Hi all, I just re-formatted my Hard drive and Now that I have everything up again, i was trying to connect to the internet, however the system isn't recognizing my Ethernet card. I don't have the disk anymore as I haven't had to do a format in about 5 years. Windows won't even add their own drivers for some reason.

I was looking for a utility that can go through all my Hardware and maybe tell me what the name of the Ethernet card is so I can download the drivers from the internet to this computers floppy drive then upload onto my comp.

Thanks for the help!

Gudday all
I have made some start-up changes using msconfig.
Once I rebooted the machine the following message appears, see attachment.
I want to keep the changes but the message seems to imply that I cannot.
If I check the box will the changes be accepted? Will this message appear every time I start?

A:Using XP System Configuration Utility

The changes have already been made. This is just a warning. As the label on the checkbox says, if checked it will not appear on next startup.

I just noticed that I have blank square boxes under startup item and command fields of the system configuration utility under startup items. Has anyone else seen this? If so what is it and how do I get rid of it.

A:System Configuration utility

I just (today) overcame this...I'm not sure at all how it happened or what may have caused it, so I can't really be of much help.

My situation started a couple of days ago when I suddenly had these messages at startup which referred to files which could not be found. I used a combination of Autoruns, msconfig, and regedit...to track down and manually delete any/all references to these two files. My system now boots up normally .

So...I can't tell you what it was or how it happened but I can say that deleting any/all registry and file references took care of it on my system.

I don't think it was malware of any sort, but I'm no expert at determining such.

Hi Cyclelegs, Thank you for your inquiry, I will do my best to assist you! The HP System Event Utility  enables special function keys on the system to be programmed. I believe it adds the extra features to the buttons. such as Wireless on and off. When I tried to install it on a lab computer here it just told me it was already installed.  When I put it in the search bar it just brings up the download. You are not able to access or use it to alter or change anything. I hope this has addressed your concerns.

I am running Windows XP Professional. When i get into the Startup menu within the System Configuration Utility i can see a number of Startup Items listed together with the Command and Location description for each Startup item. The location description is the same for each startup item - "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run." However there are 3 boxes ticked under the Startup Item heading with no startup item details (blank), no details under the Command heading (blank) but under the Location heading it shows - "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run."
Can anyone tell me why I would have details showing under the Location heading in three instances but nothing showing under the corresponding Startup Item and Command headings?

When I boot up in XP it is in selective startup and when I switch to normal startup I get all the programs I deleted in my start up system tray. This is like a seesaw, is there anyway I can select normal start up and delete the programs from my system tray at the same time, this is driving me crazy.
Another ? is when I was using ME there was a great password reminder program, does this exist in XP, If not is there any good programs other than Gator(YUCK), any suggestions much appreciated, thanks, Neesh

Hi All,
Not sure if I'm in the correct discussion but I made a disk image of my "C" drive using Windows 7 built-in utility onto another hard drive. My "C" drive is using 27.4GB of data but the Image size is only 12.9GB. Could I have done something wrong? I thought the image size would be at least as big as the used space on the "C" drive. I'm concerned that I didn't get all my programs, files and settings backed up correctly.

Any thoughts?

Thanks............Tom

P.S. I tried to do this last night using DVD's for backup but decided to abort after 9! Dvd's were burnt and it still was not completed.

Welcome,
I do not know if you did it right, but the image is compressed and should be smaller.
