for some reason a couple of computers ive help debug have problems. it may be because i updated("windows"), put virus scanners, adaware, spybot, and removed virus's and bugs. or because these folks are stuck using outlook only.

It worked for a while, then I logged off and it came back later and it went right back to the same old thing. I know this is in the archives, but I can't find it in the 70+ pages, I looked for over an hour.
Here it is. I am on Windows XP SP2, I am on IE 6.0 & OE 6.0 A cousin sent me an e-card, it said I had to do the old ctrl+click, I stupidly did this and now it won't go away permanently. I want to be able to open a link from OE as I always did without having to hit ctrl + click. I hope someone can help me

Hi Guys I hope you can offer some advice on this one.

We've got a 2007 exchange server and we are having trouble with some users using outlook outside of the office. Typically what happens is they send emails and they sit in the outbox for quite some time and sometimes they send and some times it requires a restart of outlook to get them to send. We are using RPC over Http. My new dell laptop will do this it has Win 7 64 bit and office 2010 and when I get home I can sen emails for a little while and if I wait 10 minutes or so and come back to send some more tests it will all of a sudden not send the emails. If I right click on the outlook icon in the system tray it and choose connection status it will say connected. But then if I hit reconnect it struggles to connect the the 4 items mail/directory. I've also got a old laptop with xp and office 2007 and I'm having the same problems with that system too. I've tried many things like removing add-ons, disabling ativirus, checking off send email immediately, changing authentication from ntlm to basic and many more. I had one user who had this problem and I repaired her office install and disabled her firewall and it seems to have stopped her problems, but I tried apply the same solution to other pc's and they continue to have issues.

Thanks for the advice!

A:Outlook seems to lose connection

Several years ago I had users experiencing an simular issue, I don't remember the specifics but it had to do with the way DNS was working, it would pick up the wrong mail server (local computer instead of RPC) or something.

Not much help but easily checked.

Four days ago, when attempting to check email on my computer ( IE ver.
6.0.2; outlook express), my emails stopped loading at the count of 20;
it still stops at 20; with the date of those emails 4days before.
Message says *your server has unexpectedly terminated connection*
with *possible causes* being *network problem*,*server problem* and
*long periods of inactivity*. I am not on a network and I check email
various times thoughout the day, therefore not inactivity. The old Jan. 24th emails prior to #20 still load on OE, but are repeated 4 times. I went to the webmail site but they do dot have the file I want to delete. Tried changing load time to 5 minutes to create less *inactivity*, but still got same message. I would appreciate any information or guidance on how to get my email going properly again.
Thanks a lot,

Hi Everyone..

Well, I have a friend who has a DELL 4600 with Windoss XP SP2 installed. They're email was working fine then it started coming up with this error:

"Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity......"

Well, I thought it might have been the Nortons Internet Security 2005, that they had running, so I uninstalled the program, which came off fine with no errors or problems. The system seems very responsive now, but I still get the same problem? I can recieve email fine, but I cannot send out email, I still get that error? I still think it has something to do with Nortons Internet Security update or something.. I checked all my settings and they're all correct. I also tried to create another identity in Outlook Express and still have the same problem. I also tried to use ThunderBird and still get that error. There's no Router between the computer and modem (cable) and I ran Nortons before I uninstalled it to check for any virus/trojans/spyware etc..all clean...

I'm thinking that port 25 in Windows itself is closed, as when I tested the modem on my laptop with my friends email settings on my Outlook Express eveything worked great (on my computer)..I could send and recieve. So I'm sure its not the modem or mail server...

Is there anything that can be done to fix this short of blowing Windows out and reinstalling?? Would d... Read more

A:Solved: Outlook Express - Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection

Well, I think I figured this one out...hope this will help others also...

What I did was after uninstalling Nortons Internet Security 2005 from system, I rebooted computer and then disabled Windows Firewall then tested a sent email then re-enabled Windows firewall and email was still able to get sent out , simple as that...I did not re-install Nortons Internet Security, but instead installed NOD32, Zone Alarm, MS Antispyware and I Hate SPam...

Hope this helps someone else down the road..

When an e-mail is received in Outlook Express 6 In Windows XP Home if it contains pictures I cannot see more than 1 picture and I cannot click on the picture to enlarge it. If a link to anyplace is included in any e-mail and I click on it to go someplace nothing happens.

This used to all work at one time.

I have gone to Outlook Exp Tools, Options, Security and unchecked "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a Virus" and unchecked
"Block images and other external content in HTML email."

I ran AVG Anti-Virus, SpyBot Search and Destroy, and Ad-Aware and cleaned up anything they found. (They are all current on their updates.)

I loaded and Ran HiJackThis. I copied the log to "" and analyzed it. I removed anything that was not safe or better.

I still cannot solve this problem.

I called my ISP and after taking me through a few things they said it wasn't their problem.

Anyone have any ideas? Your help would greatly be appreciated.

A:Cannot see Pics or click on links in Outlook Express

THis may help you on the links.

If that is the case you probably need to repair your file associations.

To do that, go to Windows Explorer.
Click Tools/Folder Options.
Select File Types.

In the list of registered file types, scroll down and click on “URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol.”

In Windows XP, click Advanced. (In earlier Windows versions, click Edit.)
Click “Open” in the Actions box, then click Edit.

Under "Application used to perform action," your browser's executable file should be listed.

If you use Firefox, it should say:

If you use Internet Explorer, the line should read:
"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" –nohome

Click OK>>OK. Then go back to the listing of registered file types, and
do the same for URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol with Privacy.

Outlook Express was downloading an email when our power blinked. After powering the computer back up, the email is there, but if you click on it the program will freeze up. It's from a source that I'm not concerned about it being a virus. Other emails have come in since then, and the program works like normal, but if I click on this particular email to just simply delete it, the program will freeze everytime. Can't open it, can't delete it - can't do anything with it. I just simply want it to go away now. Any clue?

P.S. I've tried rebooting in safe mode and it does the same thing.

Why is it that I am emailing back and forth to a friend using "reply" eventually the text formatting goes nuts?
I get random fonts and sizes that it refuses to reformat before I send. I once thought it was just my computer reflecting back to me weird font changes but when I asked my friend she said that's how they actually showed up, a mixture of fonts.
Does this happen most or get triggered when you cut and paste from somewhere else and make Outlook Express go out of it's mind?

The title pretty much says it all. If I eject a CD while online I temporarily lose my internet connection. Also when I turn off (dismount) my external Hard Drive I lose my internet connection as well.(I lose the connection & then it resets itself!) Any Ideas as to why this may be happening?

A:Solved: Eject CD & Lose Internet Connection!

For everyone's info I present the following from Linksys/Cisco Community Forums:

From yleclerc:

Yes, it seems to be a known problem. Whenever the Wireless Network software is installed, the wireless adapter may disconnect when:

-- Connecting another USB device
-- Disconnecting any USB device
-- Inserting CD / DVD
-- Ejecting CD / DVD
-- Ejecting Digital camera medias

No real solution since Linksys has not revised the drviers / software.

The "other" solution of using RALink drivers does not seem to be a true solution. Most of the time, the RALink driver will not detect the Linksys adapter.

from Star:

I solved this by uninstalling the Linksys Wireless Network Monitor. I no longer disconnect from the internet when I turn off a USB or Firewire device (ipod, canon mx850 printer, external hard drive). However, using Windows Zero Configuration isn't a perfect solution. The drawback is that I have frequent 2-5 second freeze ups in World of Warcraft with WZC, especially in combat. So my workaround is to stop the WZC service once I have booted up and have an internet connection. It is quite annoying!

Thank You Linksys....

i just got a laptop 2 days ago with Vista (dont know if this is a Vista question or not). When i start my laptop, i have a fine wireless connection. then when i close the lid it all goes into hibernation, ofcourse, but then when i open the lid later, not only is the connection gone, but the laptop will not even recognize my Linksys router & wireless - which is only 3 feet away! i have to restart the computer to get a connection again.
ive called Gateway 4 times and i get a different response everytime i call - one just told me a MUST reinstall windows in order to fix it. Even Lisksys gives me different answers everytim i call too.
Vista has alot more settings and little petty nuances than XP. is there a setting i have to make for the wireless to be recognized after hibernation?

can anyone give me a step by step description, how i can export my Emails and the Address book from Outlook Express 6 to another Computer which runs also Outlook Express 6?
I tried already to export the Address book but it only allows me to export it as a *.csv-File and after i put the data on my usb stick and try to import it on my new computer by File - Import - Addressbook, the program keeps asking me for a *.wab-File? (btw: i can only use the: "Text File (Comma Separated Values))" Option, when exporting the address book.

Export and Import from email messages doesn't work either.

Has anyone a really step-by-step description how to do this??

Thank you very much in advance for your help

A:Solved: Import & Export from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook Express 6

Hi wizzle2003

When you are ready to Import the .csv file on the destination computer,
In Outlook Express,
File > Import > Other Address Book
You should then be given the option to choose a Text File (Comma Separated Values)
Then Browse to the .csv file to complete the Import.
Enable Show Hidden Files and folders:

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the check mark for Hide Extensions for known file types.
To locate the directory where Outlook Express keeps it's message store:
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab > Store Folder
Note the location, then Cancel out of the window.

Navigate to that directory, copy all the .dbx files to a folder on the Desktop.
Copy those files to a folder on the Desktop of the destination computer.
If you are using a Flash drive to transfer the files, it may take a couple of transfers to complete.

Once all the .dbx files are on the Destination computer,
Open Outlook Express,
Tools > Import > Messages > Microsoft Outlook Express 6 > Next
Select: Import mail from an OE 6 store directory
Click: OK
Browse to the folder containing the .dbx files on the Desktop.
When you reach the Finish button,
You should see a "Congratulations Your data was successfully imported"

If there is more than one Identity in Outlook Express, switch to the other Identities in Outlook Express and repeat the steps above.

I have 7 devices connected to my Netgear Router 600/3700v2 and the devices keep disappearing. I believe I have found the solution. Connect to your Netgear Router (you will see BASIC and ADVANCED options) and select the ADVANCED settings. Click the tab below ADVANCED SETTINGS and in the drop down menu select UPnP. You will see on the top of the screen ADVERTISEMENT TIME TO LIVE - this setting DEFAULTS TO "4" which is okay for "normal" home use (well, it didn't work for me). This setting is what controls your attached devices. If you keep losing them, try increasing the settings until they remain visible. I tried 5 first - no go. Then I tried 8 and I haven't lost the devices since. Hope this works for you!

I run Vista Home Premium on my Dell Inspiron Notebook. Something that is a recent problem in the last few weeks; often when I have to hit the power button to wake up the notebook from sleep mode (hibernation), I lose the internet connection, but still have local connection. I disconnect and try to connect but can't, but when I reboot it automatically reconnects fine to local and internet. I say often, as sometime after a short sleep it is still connected......

Have checked all settings and everything seems fine, but maybe I missed something. This never use to happen. Only change I have made I can think of is I installed COMODO firewall a few weeks back......about the same time I recall this starting.

My wife's PC with Norton Internet Security always gets the internet connection after wakeup without problem. The two computers are not networked but use the same wireless router.
The only other thing I did was stop Superspywareblaster from opening at startup so I could just use it to scan occassionally. I also run Nod32.

Any ideas as I am a bt baffled by this glitch?

Hi, my parent's computer has started acting up again this morning. My mom was on the Internet and everything was fine. Then she opened Outlook Express and it disconnects the computer. The connection box then opens. When I looked in connections from the options tab, it doesn't show any of the 3 connections available.

They are running Win XP Pro. I don't know how to check the version of Outlook Express without it disconnecting me. Also, I ran Norton LiveUpdate and it's a different update box than I'm used to. Have they changed the usual update screen?

A:Outlook Express disconnecting connection

this is just a long shot, but worth a try...

extracted from this page

Disconnects occur after opening Outlook Express
This may be caused by Outlook Express attempting to get Windows to dial when a connection to the Internet is already present. Try the following to resolve the issue:

- on the Outlook Express toolbar select

tools | accounts | mail tab | properties button | connection tab

- check mark the "always connect to this account using" box

- select Local Area Network from the dropdown list.

- click apply and ok

This will cause OE to use the existing connection and not cause a disconnect by trying to dial when a connection already exists.

A:Outlook Express Changed Computer Connection

Hi Mary

You may want to double-check your Mail setup with Roadrunner. Phone support is included in their service. The POP3 incoming mail server here in Southern California is simply named --- if Rochester follows the same naming pattern, they should be [Update - I just checked, and yes, Rochester's incoming POP3 server is named --- and the SMTP out-going server is named]. Your previous settings aren't quite right just yet.

Why not redo your account from scratch. It's not a problem to see a login screen when you first start Outlook. Things are a bit more secure logging in each time. In your Internet settings, however, make sure that any dial-up connections leftover in the "Connections" tab are fully removed.

I noticed you had a malware issue in the HiJack This forums here at Tech Support Forums -- make sure to follow up on that: malware infections will attempt to modify your connection settings & attack your systems security setup. If unsure how to proceed, here's a link to the 5-Step Security Checklist process ---

Best of luck

I really need some help. I am happy to donate to your favorite charity or this website if I can get these problems solved. First problem is with Outlook Express. I can't send or receive. Error message is :Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Possible causes are server problems, network problems or long period of inactivity. I've checked with my high speed internet provider (Cox) and the problem is in my computer, they can't help. My daughter has a separate log on with this computer and I attempted to delete her old OE account and set up a new one on her screen. It appeared to work but when I logged onto my screen, my email no longer works. We're both getting the same error message or a popup asking for a password that just continues to pop up every time we enter the password. There was a message screen about Outlook 2000 during the process of adding the new account and that may be what's interfereing. I believe I removed all of Office 2000 from this computer but not sure. I'm sure the new account is now setup (I did it on Cox's website and used their automated OE setup program) and actually got messages on both our accounts before it started with the error message again.
Second problem is my Lexmark X83 printer. No longer getting a connection to computer. I've uninstalled and reinstalled 3 times, last installation using the driver from Lexmark's website instead of my disks. I am continually getting a errro messag... Read more

IM using windows XP..............

This just started about an hour ago

When I am online, happing surfing (as you do) with Netscape and decide to open Outlook express 6 I get "you arew currently working offline, would you like to connect now" If I click yes, it disconnects the modem and reconnects after a password prompt.

Likewise - if I am using Outlook Express and decide to use IE, the same thing happens

I only have one connection shown in my networks connections window, so Im assuming it is something I have set wrongly in Outlook and IE. Likewise, all the programs are connecting using the connection name.

Any Ideas?

A:Outlook Express and IE insist on opening new connection

It has been a while since I used either of these, since I stick with Mozilla, but you might want to check your settings in OE: Tools/ Options/Connection.

I recently wiped my hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP because I was having some problems and I just needed a clean slate. Everything has gone swimmingly except I've noticed that whenever I put my computer into standby mode I am unable to connect check email using Outlook Express. I have no other problem connecting to the internet (I'm writing this after just having come out of standby mode), and Windows is completely up to date as far as I know. I never had this problem prior to reinstalling XP, so it's obviously connected to that. Can anyone help?

Details: Outlook Express 6, Dell Dimension 4600, Windows XP, cable modem (Toshiba PCX100U).

EDIT: I just tried shutting down OE before going into standby mode, and then opening it again when I resume and it works fine. That's obviously a temporary solution to my problem, but I'm still curious what's causing the problem.

Does anyone know the procedure for configuring outlook express on a proxy connection so that I can acess e-mails from hotmail, yahoo, rediffmail and others?

A:configuring outlook express on a proxy connection

Set Outlook Express to use HTTP as its mail protocol:

You will need to create a new Account for each mail server.

It is a heck of a lot easier to just use IE.

However, your proxy settings are set in Internet Options, Connections. Tell OE to use your default LAN settings.

i have a "window/app focus" challenge that's driving me nuts!

previously, if i had 2 apps open, i could single click app 1's respective Taskbar icon to restore (minimize)/lose (set) focus. the aforementioned method would also minimize or maximize the app 1's window as the focus changed. further, if i launched app 2, app 2 would load in the foreground, immediately receive focus and i could use it right away. seems after a recent Windows Update, i lost the ability to use all the above methods. My current Taskbar properties are:
Taskbar Tab - Lock the Taskbar, Use Small Icons and Autopeek all enabled
Start Menu Tab - both Privacy settings enabled
the steps below describes the current behavior starting with no apps open:

i open app 1 (e.g., Firefox) and perform an app 1 activity
next I open app 2 (e.g., Word) and app 2 loads in the background (as opposed to opening in the foreground and receiving the focus)
i click on app 2's taskbar icon to gain access (transfer focus) and perform an app 2 activity, however, app 2's taskbar icon starts flashing but app 2 doesn't receive the focus.
to access app 2 i have to minimize app 1 using app 1's minimize button
if i want to go back to app 1 i click on app 1's taskbar icon to gain access (transfer focus) and perform an app 1 activity, however, app 1's taskbar icon starts flashing but app 1 doesn't receive the focus.

Yes, I am having the same problem as you. With my first install of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit I had this issue and I thought that maybe some windows system files got corrupted. About 2 weeks ago I reinstalled the os clean and today the problem began again. It's extremely frustrating when the taskbar doesn't bring the window into focus.

I have to actually click on the window itself which mostly involves minimizing the windows in front of it. Restarting usually fixed the problem but I just restarted the computer yesterday. Coming back from sleep only once and the bug popped up. This is a weird bug but have read others having the same problem.

I was also thinking that it might be some app I have installed but others have this bug so it probably is not related to any particular program, as far as I know.

gang I found an old post here that describes my situation, something I caused but don't know how to undo.
The system in question has Windows XP Professional, and MS Office 2000 Professional, the main reason for which is OUTLOOK. When Outlook cranks up it triggers an error message which is in my subject line:
"Outlook requires Microsoft Outlook Express 4.01 or greater....". The system of course also has OE6 on it which we don't use, but it does work etc.

The issue is me: I use autoruns to shut off everything non-mandatory, and, as another thread-poster identified, there is something in the list of goods that I have disabled that OE is dependent on, if I understand the old thread properly. The problem is that the poster [OP] in that thread said he found the key, but he didn't NAME THE ENTRIES
Thus, I dunno which ones he reversed that made the issue go away.

if anyone knows, pls let me know, so I can fix my goof.

Recently I have noticed my Dell Vostro laptop has been very slow in booting to a point where I can actually do something with any speed.

I had been reading various forums regarding the problem and the general consensus was that removing unnecessary start-up programs would assist. This I did, and included in it was the removal of Outlook Express as a start-up as I never use it.

I was rather startled to find that the next time I started up Outlook I get the message indicated in the title. When acknowledging the message, Outlook still opens and functions correctly as far as I can see, but this message always coming up is getting a little tedious.

Why would a company require the lesser of two programs to be loaded and started in order that their more powerful program should work? Amazing thought processes at MS.

I have seen answers for this question elsewhere and I have tried their solutions but to no avail. That includes setting IsInstalled in registry key 881dd1c5-3dcf-431b-b061-f3f88e8be88a to a Dword value of 1.

What I have found, is the key {44BBA840-CC51-11CF-AAFA-00AA00B6015C} and {7790769C-0471-11d2-AF11-00C04FA35D02} in registry directory HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\AutorunsDisabled. As the first refers to Outlook Express 6 and the other to Address Book 6 I assume that this may have something to do with my problem.

If they are the problem, is there a way of moving these keys out of AutorunsDisable and back into Instal... Read more

I just launched my email and I've lost everything. It looks like a whole new program has launched (Outlook Express 6), whereas I used to have Outlook 2003. The only thing I can think of is I needed to find my email password to set up email on my mobile, so I went to Start/Programs, but all I could find was Outlook Express 6. Perhaps an automatic update has taken place. Anyway, I went to Tools/Accounts/double clicked on my username/Servers, but the password was blanked out. I therefore killed the program, but when I hit the email button on my keyboard to launch Outlook 2003, Outlook Express 6 launched, which has no emails at all.

The only thing I can think that has changed since yesterday is my Norton 360 Antivirus software expired today and I intend buying an update tomorrow. Perhaps there's a connection? What do you think happened, are my old emails stored somewhere, and how can I restore Outlook 2003?

A:Solved: Outlook 2003 Suddenly Replaced by Outlook Express 6

When you launched Outlook express do you remember that box that came up and said something along the lines of:

"outlook express is currently not your default mail application, do you want it to be?"
and you clicked yes without reading it properly...?

Well it has done exactly that. You have two email apps on your computer, one of them has to be default. when you did that you changed it to outlook express. Luckily for you it is easy to fix.

All you need to do is go into the Start menu and find Outlook 2003 and run it. It will prob be under All programs > Microsoft Office> Outlook. Run it and then you will get the same prompt as you did for outlook express about making it the default app, choose yes to this. This will now make Outlook 2003 your default email app again and fix your problem.
Let us know if this works.

I carefully followed all the steps for converting from OE 6 to Outlook 2003. I have just only one email account, so I have one password. After all the neccesary steps were followed to convert to Outlook, I used that same password and saved that for Outlook. (Outlook came pre-installed on the desktop with Microsoft Office 2003).

Now, I have OE 6 and Outlook 2003 both running at the same time. OE6 can receive email as well as Outlook. And they can both send email. I don't understand how to disable OE6 because I don't want to use it any longer.

What do I need to do to have only Outlook 2003 running as my email account?

My friend just had her computer reformatted after a bad virus contamination. It is still running EXTREMELY slow but has at least been running correctly. She is running XP

Yesterday I installed Microsoft Office 2003 for her with Microsoft Outlook and now her email doesn't seem to be working. She uses Outlook Express as her mail default rather than Office Outlook but keeps getting the error message that it can't find the POP3.

I also installed AVG for her and have shut off the email plugin to see if that is part of the problem.

The thing is, it happened yesterday right after I installed these programs for her but then a minute later her email worked just fine. Now she just restarted her computer and the mail won't work again.

Is there something wrong with her computer or is it at the server?

I hope this all makes sense.

Hi smelsco

Is AVG E-mail scanning enabled?

First try adjusting your Server Timeout settings:

In Outlook Express:
Tools > Accounts > Mail tab > (AccountName) > Properties
On the Advanced tab, adjust the Server Timeout settings to at least 2 minutes.
If you still receive the Timeout error, adjust the Server Timeout to 5 minutes.

If the Timeout error persists with the Server Timeout set to 5 minutes, try disabling AVG from checking outgoing emails.

Double click the AVG icon in the System Tray.
Right click the E-mail Scanner component,
Properties > Plugins tab > Configure button
Uncheck: Check outgoing mail
OK, OK to save and close.

Also, if I upgrade to XP SP2, will I get my Outlook Express back and working?

This is an intermitent problem with the web pages unalbe to connect to different pages but later I was able to connect to those pages. However, I never lose my network and wireless connection.

It's very frustrating having to wait several minutes to reconnect/reach those web pages. I've optimized and cleaned temp and other junk files up but still have the same issue.

I also tried using Google Chrome but will have the same issue.

A:Lose IE9 Connection - still have Network connection

Hello Shadow4845 and welcome to Seven Forums.

My usual disclaimer: I'm not an expert at anything! It sounds like this might be a hardware acceleration issue. Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > Advanced tab. Look under Accelerated Graphics > "Use software rendering instead of GPU rendering". If the box is unchecked, try checking it. (Or if it's checked, try unchecking it.) You'll have to restart your computer for the change to take effect.

Please post back and let us know if this helps or not.

Hi all, The problem I am having is that my connection will suddenly disconnect and leave me with a blank screen, or say that it is restarting which it does. Does anyone have a solution to this. I found this on another site but have not tried it. I trust the advise I get here more than any other. Here is what I found: There seems to be a bug in IE 7 which causes your Internet connection to drop out every so often.

Technically what is going on is that IE 7 seems to be corrupting the DNS settings. You can still ping an IP's and Surf by IP IE7 just won't fully resolve DNS.

Or one that seems to work for me is to open IE 7 then click on "Tools" and then "Internet Options". In the dialog box that opens click on the "Connections" tab at the top. Look toward the bottom of that box for "LAN Settings". Now check the box that say "Automatically Detect Settings". Click "OK" to close all boxes.

So if you have a answer to this please advise.

I have a similar problem as "Lose Explorer connection after about 1min." (same?)

I run a small home network with 3 machines behind a router. I started getting this earlier this week on our Windows XP machine. I thought it was a cabling problem at first.

If I do an IPCONFIG /release and /renew I can browse again for about a minute. I can ping various IP adresses on the web both by name and IP adress even after internet browsing stops working.

I have scanned for spyware with spybot S&D with nothing showing up and neither AVG (free) or eTrust can find anthing wrong.

I have tried another network card and a new cable get the same results.
I do notice that I am sending out 1 packet a second or so from the connection status page.

When uploading any file (size not an issue) - the computer loses internet connectivity and will not reconnect unless the modem is reset. There are other computers on the wireless network that are still connected (stay connected). I call my IP and they are able to ping the modem (before the reset and while my browser displays the cannot connect message). This seemed to happen suddenly. I uploaded to flickr on a Monday and then on Tuesday I could not upload. I did a virus scan and no viruses were found. The antivirus software I use is current, that is the subscription has not lapsed. I went to speedtest dot net for other reasons and the same problem occurs when that test does the upload test. As long as I do not try to upload I stay connected to the internet. I am able to send email. As soon as I upload the connection is lost.

Lemme paint the scenerio for you. I live in Naples, Italy. When someone gets ADSL hooked up here, the common problem is that they initially, after set-up and first connecting, get some virus/trojan that affects their Explorer connectivity. I can't seem to get rid of the problem. Now I can log onto, say PartyPoker, and remain connected almost indefinetly. Programs that don't need a browser for support seem to fair better. But, using Windows Explorer will 'lock' the connection after about 1 minute, disabling any program from connecting to the internet at that point until I reset the machine. Heres my HiJack info:

would you do/answer all the following

Is this the only PC that disconnects - do other devices connected work OK - if so how are they connected to the router - wireless or wired

would you post the following tests when the internet is working OK, and then repeat ALL the tests when the internet disconnects.
Make sure you also indicate on the reply which tests are for what condition.

please include the xirrus screen shots for both conditions - see how below.

Please post back here the make and exact model of the router and if you have a separate modem, the make and exact model of the modem.

Please make a note of the status of the lights on the modem and on the router when working normally - post that light status here.
Now when the internet disconnects make a note of the status of the lights for the modem and router here again. also note which have changed.

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, kaspersky or Mcafee or any free security suites like zonealarm, AVG , Webroot etc

Recently I've notice that while either writing an email(Thunderbird) or on the Internet(Firefox), the screens dims down and loses the color and sits there for about 30 seconds and then switches back to my desktop and I lose my email, if writing something, or closes the webpage I was previously on. I am still with Ubuntu 7.10. A window then appears telling me that it is Not Responding. Why is this happening now and what could be the causes of dropping the connection? Anyone?

A:Lose Internet connection

Dimming means "busy".

I'm not sure if I can answer your question, but maybe provide some insight.

When Ubu launches a background process, like installing new software or performing an update, the screen fades out during the install to prevent you from doing anything at that critical time. So that's what's going on there.

If the system is "greaying out" while doing online stuff, I suspect Ubu is trying to install some app/resource, failing, and crashing your program.

I don't use Thunderbird myself, though I don't know what Firefox needs that Thunderbird might share.

I'm in Windows at the moment, so reply to this message and I'll jump into Linux to see if I can be of more help.

(BTW: I'm using the 64bit Ubuntu 8.04, so my results my vary.)

I lose internet connectivity with my browsers (IE & FireFox) without warning - happens at all times of the day (mostly during business hours - less at night). Email operations (check adn send via Outlook Express) still works but the browsers fail. Reboot eliminates the problem but it reappears later. It is not related to any specific web site (will happen at Cnet, CNN, ESPN, etc.).

Any ideas what to do? Thanks in advance for the help!

I've followed all the instructions in the sticky thread - have run numerous virus scans (Norton, Bitdefender, etc.), ad-aware, spy-bot, etc. Looks like everythat that could be troubling is gone but the problem persists.

I'm a newbie here, looking for help and guidance. I have taken on a new client who has the following setup, BT Infinity, Vigorpro 5510, and SBS 2011 server. I was involved with unpacking and seting up the equipment to get client up and running. I have never setup a firewall before, and after contacting Draytek, they guided to get BT infinity, 5510 to talk so that the server was able to get onto the internet. The setup was then left in its default state.

All was fine until lately, the client keeps losing internet approx same time most days.

My problem is how do i get the 5510 properly configured to talk to BT infinity, and sbs 2011. I always get lost when it come to playing with IP address. Also the client has a fixed IP address supplier by BT, so want to know how to setup the vigorpro with this address.

The configuration is as follows:-

BT ASDL modem, dhcp switched off, ip addr, static ip 8x.xx.xx.xx

Vigorpro 5510:-
Wan 1 IP -
sub mask -
Gateway IP -
primary IP -

Wan 2 - Not configured

Lan 1st IP -
1st submask -

sbs 2011
def gateway
Pref DNS

PC assigned IP from sbs 2011

Can anyone review the about, and help identify any problems.

Where should I enter the BT Static IP address on the draytek.

THanks to all in advance

A:lose connection to internet

Anybody able to assesss this configuration and advise if need changing.

Its becoming urgent now as the client keeps running the sbs 2011 wizard 'connect to internet' inorder to resume internet connection.

Any help / guidance will be appreciated.

I have 4 laptop computers that use the same wireless connection at different times, my main laptop will lose the internet connection every few minutes. It can be fixed by restarting the computer or unplugging the modem and router. This will sometimes fix it for a little while and then it starts over. I have windows 7 operating system. Any ideas on how to start fixing this issue.

A:Lose internet connection

do the other 3 laptops lose connection at all - or is just this one laptop

can we see an xirrus screen shot from the faulty laptop

make and model of the laptop

may also need a wireless driver update
Run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector
Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and install the program.
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

If you do not have another PC - do you have a phone connected to the internet - can you photograph the result and post the image in a reply ( the site now appears to require a business email, so try the direct link below)
Direct link to the program is here

I gave my 10 year old an old refurbished Dell Latitude 600. It seems to be intermittently losing wifi connection, even on my home wifi system.
Is there a card or something that needs to be replaced? Am I better off just buying a new laptop?
Thank you.

A:What causes this PC to lose wifi connection?

Is it using a network card? Or does it have built in wifi?

The drivers may need to be updated. Network drivers and firmware can both become obsolete over time. Upgrading newer versions of these things can sometimes fix network connection problems.

Do you experience connection losses on any other machines in the house? Sometimes there can be interference.

Intermittantly lose connection after 1 minute or 2 hours. Difficult to regain connection. In fact it intermittantly re-connects itself without me doing anything sometime. Network adapters, ISP, and modem all working properly when problem occurs. Computer won't recognize the connection for some reason. Resetting network, getting new IP settings won't solve the problem. I also un-installed all programs I recently obtained. ISP provider tested all their end of it and said it's most likely my computer. Dell Sudio 1737 with Vista Home Premium 64bit. Any ideas out there?

My computer has Vista. At least a couple times per day we lose the internet connection. It never seems to happen while we are actively working on the computer. We will come back some time later, and it will not be connected. Occasionally, if I go to the network connection icon on the bottom right of the computer and click on it, it will reconnect. But most times it will not reconnect, and the only solution we have found is to restart the computer. We have had the computer approximately 3 years. When we first got it, we had Time/Warner for the internet provider. We never had this problem with them. About 2 years ago, we switched to AT&T. It seemed to start at that time. I have talked to them, and had a service person out a few times. We tried switching the ethernet connection to a different port, but this didn't solve it. They replaced the box, but still did not fix. They think it is computer related because we can always get reconnected every time by just rebooting the computer. But this is a real pain when we have to do it 2 to 3 times per day. HELP!!!!!!

Hi...I use Crapcleaner a lot, to help clean up a lotta 'stuff' on my computer. But, I've found, after using it, and I shut my computer off for the day, when I turn it on again, I lose my DSL information and have to go thru my DSL server to get reconnected. Each time, my username, etc has dissapeared. The Crapcleaner is the only thing I can think has 'taken' it off my computer. What can I do to avoid this in future? And, is there anything any better than Crapcleaner to do what it does on my machine? I'm a Senior Citizen, and self taught on computers. As such, I need to know what to do in common laymans language, please.

My OUtlook is freezing up a lot lately and this is new. Whenever I click on an internet link in the body of an email message - it freezes. If I wait about 3 minutes or more sometimes - it will finally go to explorer and open the link. If I don't wait and decide to just close outlook - I get a "not responding". When I "end program" I get a message from MS that says it is related to WIN Fax Pro.

PLease help this frustrated girl! I don't even know what Winfax Pro is!!

PS - I have Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2 Pentium 4...anything else you need. I can run Hyjack this if it helps...

A:Solved: Outlook freezes up whenever I click on link

You might have to change the registered file type:

1. Open My Computer.
2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the File Types tab.
3. In the Registered File Types list, click URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol, click Advanced, and then click Edit.
4. In the Actions box, type open.
5. In the Application used to perform action box, find to the location of Internet Explorer (Iexplore.exe), and then click Open.
6. In the Application box, type IExplore and then click OK.

That's assuming you're using Internet Explorer as your browser? If not, search for FireFox or whatever browser you prefer.

Let me know if that helps!

I use outlook express to get email from Yahoo using the pop server there.

Every once in a while, the program (outlook express) tries to condense my message files, but I get an error saying something else is using the files, (outlook) or something.

Question: how can I find out what else is accessing the files of outlook express, so that the thing can do its maintenance?
Or does anyone know what other programs would access those files?

A:Solved: Outlook and Outlook express

Now, both my mom, and I are getting the same error message. We get it when we exit outlook express, and it tells us it needs to compact the files to save space.. we tell it to go ahead, and then it runs thru its stuff and we get this error at the end..

Can anyone tell me why, or what to look for, to correct this problem? Thanks.

Check your power options Power Plan - Restore Default Settings

Either that or I'm thinking irq conflict between the drivers for the two. Most likely a driver issue if so have you ever run driver verifier on your machine?
