Solved: Sound Volume control lost can not "add Program"

Q: Solved: Sound Volume control lost can not "add Program"

Windows xp pro, 512 mb , 40 GB main drive NFTS.
attempted to use original Windows xp setup disk to "ADD sound volume control" to taskbar. Could NOT find its folder to "extract" from.

Previously had checked Start> Control Panel> Sound & audio devices ". Under AUDIO, tried to Ck [volume box]; got win error msg " Can not execute SNDVOL32EXE." " uSE "ADD/REMOVE - CONTROL PANEL ETC. "

sEARCH FOR SNDVOL32.EXE found it in C:\I386, ver 5.1.2600.0 ( xpclient .010817-1148). ( also found "EXPAND.exe & Extrac32.exe )

Volume control of Win Media Player works ok with CDs in both CD-DVD drives.

Question : How do I restore a sound Volume Control to the taskbar when I can't find it on the setup desk ?

A: Solved: Sound Volume control lost can not "add Program"

Some time over the last few weeks I lost the Speaker Volume control icon on my Taskbar (Normally on the right side near the digital clock). I don't know what I did to make it leave, but I was looking for it just the other day and realized it was gone! I went into my Control Panel to access the audio sliders, and when I checked the box to display the volume control icon on the Taskbar, a text box popped up telling me that I have to install it from my add/remove programs function. Well, I can not find the Volume Control icon function anywhere, including on my original Windows XP Professional installation CD. Can anyone tell me how I can re-install the speaker Volume Control icon on my Taskbar?

The machine is a THINKPAD R31, running XP.

A few days ago, I "lost" the volume level bars that should appear on the screen when I press one of the 3 physical buttons (with symbols meaning Volume down, Volume Up and Mute) beside the "Thinkpad" button on the machine.

I fear I may have accidentally deleted something.

Does anyone know of an easy remedy?

Many thanks, in anticipation.

I was working on trying to get my bluetooth keyboard to work so I installed updates to make sure that wasn't the problem and now I restarted my computer I have no sound. I tried doing a rollback on my sound driver but that just got rid of the ability to control volume and it said no device so i downloaded and installed the device driver and no I can control volume but still no sound is coming out. Any ideas? I went to add or remove programs and it said the most recent updates I did were on the 14th so I don't think that'll help uninstalling since I just got the problem about an hour ago.

Has anyone else had this happen on Windows XP. When playing videos on Facebook in IE8 ever since they changed the design, (stupid IMO) the Volume Control takes about 15-20 seconds longer to open and it will be several inches up from the taskbar in the video screen area of Facebook. No other programs or video playing is affected by this behavior of the Volume Control. For example, You Tube is normal.

i seem to have a unique problem with windows 10 i can't find anyone else having. the volume control loses it's mind every time i stop playing files. if i'm using winamp and stop play, the next time i play, the volume will blast out of the line outs. i have to open the volume control and nudge it up or down for windows to play whatever at the volume it's SUPPOSED to be. the same thing happens when watching videos on youtube. watch a video... the volume blasts... nudge the volume, and the same thing happens with the next video. for some reason, this glitch doesn't seem to affect the headphone out.

while on the subject of headphones, why do i have to reboot every time i unplug and plug in headphones to unmute the output when windows KNOWS i just plugged them back in and even makes a point of annoying me with a popup?

I have been using flash media live encoder with manycam. It'd been working perfectly except for playing mp4's. I downloaded a k-lite codec package and had a problem and deleted. When deleting I think I may have accidently deleted an HKEY that FMLE needed. At least I thought that is what caused the problem.

The problem I have having is manycam under audio sources used to have "soundmax" listed. Now the area lists no audio sources. FMLE when opened from what I read needs to access an HKEY of which I don't see on my registry list. FMLE when opened gives a "profile validation error" and "no audio devices detected" error.

I have uninstalled both programs many times but didn;t make a difference.

I uninstalled soundmax and reinstalled. I used device manager too and disabled soundmax and then rebooted.

I read that an option might be to download the motherboard chipset drivers and then reinstall the soundmax.

Welcome to TSG, Studio.
The drivers for your computer can be found here at Dells website.

It might be easier to restore(not to be confused with a recovery or reload) the computer to a date before you installed the Klite Codecs. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore, then follow the prompts. Afterwards you may need to reinstall any software you have added since the date you chose, but at least your original registry would be intact.

Are you talking about the volume control icon next to the clock (it looks like a loudspeaker). If yes, this is one of the 3 basic icons (on a laptop you have a 4th one for battery) in the notification area. It should have been there all the time.
If it is not that one, maybe you can post a picture so that we know what it could be.

I have an XP machine which I only ever user myself (as in, there are no other users on the machine, no guest account, and it logs in without a password).

I'm trying to sort out my expansive and bloated Start Menu Programs list, but it seems that there are two separate lists. One for "Joe" (the main user account) and one for "all users", I guess because some programs give the option of installing for just one user or for everyone.

All of the programs show up in the Start Menu when I click on it, but when I go into Windows Explorer to try and sort them out, there are two separate folders;

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs
C:\Documents and Settings\Joe\Start Menu\Programs

I know I can move them around in these folders (ie; putting them in related groups, such as "system tools" etc), but can I move all of them from the main user to the "all users" folder, (or vice versa) without any problems?

I was wondering if there are any programs that would be good for replacing Windows 7's default Volume Mixer. Preferably one that doesn't alter "system" files. You see, I use macros on my mouse and media keys on my keyboard to change the volume, for the brief few days I had Windows 10 I noticed that when I change the volume via the macros on my mouse or the media keys on my keyboard a slider actually comes up that shows my volume that will slowly fade away on its own, that, or similar to that, is what I'm looking for.

most of the time i can eject without a problem and make sure nothing is going to and from the external, but after copying files for a long time in one session, i get the "can't stop generic volume device because a program is still using it" message

i did research and found ways to uninstall the driver as a permanent fix to turning off the computer to unplug to using Process Explorer..granted it was the final straw last night but yeah..

Is there a permanent fix or a good, clean way to solve this problem? And an explanation to why it does this? Thanks.

Have recently switched to Win 10, and noted that when you right click on the win bottom left, the control pannl option shows up, or if I press the win key, and type control panel, the option comes up.
No problem and a nice feature.
BUT, I now seem to have lost both the right click function ( nothing comes up) and when I type in Control Panel I have the choice of searching the web OR the settings pannel. A nuisance
seems that a range of functions are linked to the old Control Pannl, which I now dont have
OR, will not activate when in Settings. ( Like create a system image etc)

You may want to reinstall the operating system.

Backupthe files that are importantto you before you reinstall.

The "New" installation will overwrite the current one

If you do not format your hard drive before the reinstall the installation should not harm your files (That's why I suggest backingup your files) and will speed up the installation process.

I'm trying to set Notepad++ as the default program for *all* file types that it can open, using Control Panel > Default Programs > Set Your Default Programs. I want to make N++ open every file type it can open, and so I don't want to do this by individual file extension.

A:Adding a program to "Default Programs" in Control Panel

When I right-click on a file to open it, I get the option to "choose the default program", and in there, you can eventually open a browser to use to find the app you want. That app then becomes the default program for that file extension.

You do need to be admin on both (and yes they are different). You also should not be in Program Files as that is solely for legacy for 32 bit apps, shouldnt be anything there that you need to change.

Hi all,

Sorry to repeat a question I see a lot of instances of, but none of those seem to be addressing my problem correctly.

I have not done anything new to my computer in recent days, so this problem has caught me off guard (I see most instances of this problem come after upgrading to Windows 7, I have had Win 7 installed for a while now).

Here is a summary of my problem:
1) My computer recently got stuck on the "Starting Windows Screen." So I manually held the power button to reboot.
2) On reboot, it said there was a need to run a startup repair, which I did. Everything checked fine, except for the last one which said "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted," which it claimed to have successfully fixed.
3) After rebooting from repair, the system gets stuck on "Starting Windows Screen" for a good 10-15 minutes, after which it runs a registry check. After it completes that I get hopeful -- but the screen then gets stuck on an all black screen with just the mouse cursor and nothing more.
4) Additional note: Attempting to start the computer on "safe mode" leads safe mode startup to become stalled on "DRIVERS\CLASSPNP.SYS"
5) The lastest attempt to repair yielded this message: "Startup repair cannot repair this computer automatically.

A:Stuck on "Starting Windows", Repair Shows "System Volume on Disk is Corrupted"

Hi Stan, Hopefully I can help you out....or at least lead you in the right direction. From my experience, the symptoms you are suggesting sound like perhaps a dying Hard drive.

1. Do you have the windows 7 boot disks that came with your computer or when you bought the Operating System? If so, you could try and insert one of those and boot from it, and attempt to repair the installation. (this won't affect your data, only the windows system files).

2. If that doesn't fix it, you could try a fresh reinstall of windows 7, and see if that works.

3. If neither of those work, its likely that because of the fact that when windows is repairing itself, it is generally putting copies of its system files in the same physical location on your disk. Because your disk is obviously not completely dead, ie....its still loading to the windows 7 startup screen, its just copying files to the bad sectors on your hard drive and gets stuck when loading. This is especially my guess because you said Safe mode is having same problems, even after attempting to repair. In the past, I've tried and salvage a disk by reformatting it and only leaving on partitions which do not contain the bad clusters. This takes some time, and some guess work.....and really this is only a "bandaid" fix because once the disk has bad clusters, its only a matter of time before these things give out. You wouldn't want to trust your important data on it anyways....

I hope this leads you in ... Read more

Since then I have bought McAfee and when it came up this time, I just had McAfee scan and remove it.

However the I have NO working file/program associations, every time I click on the mozilla firefox shortcut I have to tell my computer to associate it with firefox.exe (the same thing happens even if I click directly on firefox.exe).

This literally is for everything, except computer navigation icons, like "My Computer" or "Control Panel"

I ran the DDS and will attach the two file, but even with the gmer.exe I had to tell my computer to associate it with gmer.exe, the exact icon I clicked on

Mostly this is just a pain in the ***, but some stuff just simply wont run, help would be GREATLY appreciated.

If your programs run, the folders must be there.

Right-click a shortcut and choose "Open File Location" to see where it brings you.

You may need to reinstall. If you had made backups, then you would not have lost anything. But if you start fresh, you will have to reinstall everything from scratch. Viruses do damage and it is not fixed by removing the virus. Make backups from now on. Your hard drive will die, too, maybe sooner than later.

Ok, so I got my Maxtor 300 Gig SATA Hard Drive and used the XP utility to create it. This is the first time I did that--I was so used to using Fdisk, I always did it that way in the past. Anyway, I'm using it as a data drive and followed the wizard in XP and ended up with a "Dynamic" volume instead of basic. I guess that's the default when you go through the wizard--I just kept clicling the "next" not even really paying attention to the choices as I usually do since I'm impatient!

Anway, I Googled and noted you need this for RAID drives and its not recognized in OS other than 2000 and XP, but is there any advantage to it? I'm not running a RAID configuration and my main OS disc is "basic". Does it matter? I can change it to basic it seems pretty easily according to MS article on it.

All of the sudden my "System Volume Information" folders (the system restore folders) on all of my hard drives are shown even when viewing hidden files is off. Tried to mark them hidden, but it won't let me. Anyone have a clue as to why they would suddenly unhide themselves and not allow me to hide them again? This is on XP Pro with no service pack1 installed. Just bugs me they did that all of the sudden. Haven't installed anything recently except Paint Shop Pro 7 and Easy CD Creator 5.2 plus the update patch to 5.3.

Hi there I have noticed that my drive letters shown in disk management are different from those being shown in "list volume" in the windows recovery console command prompt. Below are some pictures, number one showing my current partition setup with the drive letters and number two-four showing what is shown in "list volume" in the windows recovery console command prompt.

NOTE: If I do a "list volume" in a non recovery console command prompt the drive letters are shown as they are shown in disk management.

A:Drive letter in "list volume" WRE is different from "My Computer" Fix?

I believe that is normal since the recovery console assigns letters based on which partition it sees first. It is not aware of the fact that the System Reserved partition doesn't get a drive letter assigned as does Windows.

So I recently installed Windows 2000...
The first thing I did was got SP4, Internet Explorer 6, all my drivers installed (chipset, sound, video), and every update. Yet Windows 2000 hates Quake, for some reason.
Yes, Quake. The origional Quake, from 1996. I don't know why, but in Quake, I get fuzzy, choppy sound. It's not my speakers, or my audio driver, for my music works fine. I havn't had time to install any other games except this, as when I installed, I made a 6.5GB partition and whatever was left, some 230GBs of whatever was left was paritioned when I installed Windows.

As some of you may know, when you have two partitions, you can only format one at a time when you install Windows, the other needs to be formatted through windows. I just finished that, and that's why I havn't had any time.

Back to the point... so yeah, my favorite game gives my crappy sound while my music works fine. Also... my favorite registly cleaner, regcleaner (download link), will start when I click on it, and it appears in the task manager, but it never shows up... It just never opens up and I can't do anything with it, so I close it through the task manager process list (it never shows up in the Applications tab either).

I can see "roxio" program in the list of "uninstall or change a program". But I dont see it in the list of "All Programs" on start to use it. There is no desktop icon created to activate this program and this icon is not available on quicklaunch either

Now how can I use this roxio program ? where can I find list of all executable programs and how to execute them ? I clicked on the name of this program in "uninstall or change a program" list. I got a message asking to remove this program. So I cancelled it. I right clicked on this proghram to find the path. But nothing came out. I looked in Program Files to find this program, but found nothing there either. I tried to check in the task manager, if any process is running for "roxio" but nothing was there.

How can I use this application now ? If this program is not there in the system then why does it appear in the "uninstall or change a program" list ?

A:program name "roxio" appearing in the "uninstall or change a program" only

Go to your system manufacturer's web site and download the Roxio software installation package and re-install it. If option for "repair" appears - choose it.

When I open My Computer, Control Panel or any folder no files or directories display, after first there is a green loading bar on the address bar and little magnifying glasses (searching icon) on the left side directories but never displays anything.

The files I can see in other folders are unable to be opened and have white blank page icons next to them.

I can still run application so I'm not sure what the issue is. I ran a scan for virus with nothing found and I have also ran a windows update but have not restarted my PC yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Hello Forum members,

I am stumped by what appears to be a simple problem, but the answer is eluding me. I bought a brand new Hitachi 60gig 7,200 rpm HD for my Thinkpad T21 last year and installed, loaded and used it with zero problems until I was on a wi-fi connection at a hotel one evening. The connection gradually slowed to a halt, then the window I was in froze. Then the desktop failed to respond. I tried cntl/alt/delete with no success. No amount of keyboard commands had any affect, I was locked out. I couldn't even power down normally. I had to unplug the A/C cable, then remove the battery to get the laptop to shut down. I waited ten minutes and booted up like normal. This was the blue screen error message I received; "Unmountable boot volume on drive C:" Then I was given restart options as usual to no avail. It has never come out of it, regardless of the methods I have tried. Here is the strange part. I had initially loaded two (2) separate XP Pro OS's onto the HD splitting them evenly into 30gig partitions. I did that to keep web surfing separate from my dedicated music recording software, which I didn't want to risk corrupting. So, the final result is, when I boot up, I can ask for the D: drive (where the recording software resides) and it runs perfectly, but if I boot and ask for C; I get the above message. Also when I go to "My Computer" from the D: drive OS, it shows the C: drive available, but when I double click for it, it says... Read more

Here's the story. I bought this new Samsung 840 250GB SSD.
I first did a clean install of windows 7 on it and it worked fine. Windows installed without much problem and everything. Then something didn't look right about the partitions. It looked like because I had all my HDDs connected while installing windows on the SSD the windows created the system reserve on the old HDD rather than the SSD. So I went back and decided to start from scratch with all the HDDs except for the SSD disconnected. I tried reinstalling windows on it but this time it didn't work. I tried formatting the SSD and it just gave me an error saying windows couldn't install on a GPT disk. I went into bios, made sure the PC was booting from the UEFI DVD drive and it still kept giving me the same error.

So I then booted up my old HDD. I tried formatting my SSD and now I can't delete the partition!
This is what my disk set up looks like:

If I click "extend volume" on the "New Volume (G" disk, it says "there is not enough space on the disk(s) to complete this operation".
If I try to create a "new simple volume" on the "unallocated" partition, it says the same...

Have I destroyed my new SSD now?! I just want it to work like a new clean disk...

It's been a month since my laptop gone wrong. All programs doesn't run properly, and stop working many times. Media Player, Office, Internet explorer, all stop working frequently, and I have to wait ten second until five minutes to continue my work.

Two days ago I noticed that when I downloaded windows update, the updates wasn't saved in OS folder like it used to be. New folders named like "1ee10074..." appeared in my hard disk. I realized that the problems begin when I found new folder like this in my hard disk, and now the problems is getting worst after updates. I thought my "OS" was full, but the indicator say "11.8 GB free of 58.5 GB".

I can't delete or move the folder without permission, and try to copy them to "OS". Now each time I open a file, two windows are opened, one is my opened file and the other is blank window.

I don't have enough knowledge about computer. Can anyone help me, please?

A:How to fix "not responding" problem in all programs and "lost updates"

Welcome to the Seven Forums.

That temp file that you mentioned, is it in the root of the system drive?
In other words is it located here: C:\1ee10074....

If that is where it is, then it could be from a .NET update. They do not always remove that randomly named folder. Don't delete it just yet, go inside of it (say continue to the permissions security pop ups). If you find several folders with 4 numbers for the name, then it is probably from an update. Those numbered folders are for different languages. You can delete the folder if you want or just leave it. The folder is not the cause of your problems.

Try a scan with this:

Then try this:

Hey folks,

My first post on here but I'm in serious trouble. I got a "new" (to me anyway) desktop running XP today and found the audio hardware wasn't working. So I pillaged an old machine for its sound card, and inserted that onto the motherboard. Also connected the Aux and CD lines to the top of the daughterboard.

Since then, to my horror, the machine has failed to boot. All plugged in, keyboard working, screen on and being used on another box for this very post. All I get now is the usual chirps from the internal soundcard followed by a few very low notes, definitely depressing so I guess they're suggesting something's failed. There's no further action from the CPU, the fan still works, but there is no screen output whatever.

Have I fried the motherboard without realising?!

Also, ironically, the last failure tone was delivered by my speakers through the originally non-responsive audio hardware!

I'd love a bit of help on this one, because my knowledge of computers' insidey bits is pretty poor.

Many thanks,

Do you have a recovery restore install disc or partition?
You can try doing a repair or system file check...
Scan For Missing/Corrupt System Files...

Windows XP comes with a wonderful tool called System File Checker (SFC)
Itscans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer...
To Do This:
Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following command:
SFC /scannow
And then click OK
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run SFC..
You will need your Windows XP CD during this procedure if SFC needs to get an original file. Please remember that Windows XP can have multiple instances of a .DLL file and remember which version is for which program.
I have been asked if it is possible to have a "progress meter" show when SFC runs... This is the registry hack you need. PLEASE do not go messing with your registry if you do NOT know what you are doing!

This is not really a problem, more like a nerdy technical question, since I like being informed about the goings-on in my PC. I hope I posted it in the right section, since IMVU would probably fall more under "game" than anything else.

I have always been curious as to why would the developers of the chat client IMVU decide to have the program install within C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\IMVUClient (previous versions did so under "Documents and Settings") instead of "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" on Windows... I am also curious if this unconventional choice could potentially make my PC vulnerable to attacks.

Now, the program works fine AFAIK, but I'm puzzled by this. I'm the kind of user who likes having the choice of installing apps in a drive other than C: (to free space in C:, for portability, etc.), and who gets nervous when apps do not install or behave the way that I'm used to.

I was told by someone more knowledgeable than me that it was probably a lazy way to get around administrative install rights in Windows Vista and Windows 7. He also added that the cache data of the program shouldn't be in Roaming when there is no upper limit or even default size set on it.

And yes, this has been asked on their forums, but no staff member ever answered it (only a forum mod, who didn't have a clue).

Any ideas? Or am I being overly paranoid?

When I right click My Computer on Vista Start menu the page says "The page failed to load"

I enclose a screenshot of the error.

I was also get "the application has failed to start because WINBRAND.dll was not found" when running

From RUN

This has now been fixed by downloading WINBRAND.dll and copying it to c:\windows\system32

But "The page failed to load" still happens when right clicking My Computer and choosing properties.

I did a SFC / Scannow and something weird happened. The Command Window had an error (apologies - forgot to note which but will rerun in a moment) however the CBS Log File showed no errors and indicated SFC ran successfully.

I will post the results of SFC in a few moments

Thanks for your help.

In my Event Viewer under "system" I am getting these constant errors logged at about 12 per second with the big red X saying "Service Control Manager, ID 7001." It is happening whenever I am connected to the internet by e-mail or my browser, which is IE7.

What in the world is going on?? No noticeable symptoms, except when it first started I was at and my browser (IE) started acting slow and weird. That was fixed when I re-started but the red error thingys are still logging 12 per second under "system" when on e-mail or the internet.

That dxdiag "no sound card" message is misleading as I've found it says that if no driver OR sound card. I think you're missing the right driver

Also, it would seem from your post you have High Definition (HD) audio. Which means you'll need to find the right High Definition audio driver. (AC97 pre-dates HD audio so the Realtek AC97 couldn't be right)

Try starting on the HP support website HERE and enter your model number or they have a button where they'll try to identify your product and drivers for your model. They should list an HD audio driver there

Here are the facts in the matter:

I had an older machine that was running (barely) XP. Two things happened--the boot-up on the master drive got corrupted, then the machine itself died an inglorious death.

Now, I've salvaged the drive and installed into an external USB hard box. I have a laptop and a desktop that both run XP (XP Pro V2002 SP3). I can access most of the information on the drive; however, I can't get into the My Documents folder under my Documents and Settings folder. (The system reports "Access is denied.")

According to the MS Tech Center, one of the steps I need to do is to go into the Control Panel and click on "Appearance and Themes"...I don't have this option.

The question is:

How can I get into this My Documents folder so I can pull the stuff inside it out into the open?

Thanks for any assistance.

I have Windows XP Pro., sp3.

When you install a new program, what determines where it is listed: All Users>Start Menu>Programs or "user name">Start Menu>Programs?

A:What determines if a program is installed under "All Users" or "user name"?

Usually some of the programs give you an option to install it under your user name or for all users during the setup process. So say if I was installing (CVTae) a resume programming on a Windows XP computer it will after the installation process ask me if I want to install it as all users (so it will show up on the all users start menu so everyone can see it) or just for me. That's where you can decide for yourself where you want to install it.

'So usually it's the user's choice of where it's listed in most cases, but certainly not in all cases.

Hope that helps mate.

I went to the following link (from the "Please read here first..." thread);dl=item10 but was unable to find a download for "hijack this". Does anyone have an alternative link to find Hijack this?

Thank you

A message appeared saying this website wants to run 'ietag.dll' from Microsoft Corp. Is that ok?

P.S. The problem is an increadibly SLOW start up time and "fairly" frequent freezing of the screen (enough to be very frustrating). The computer never goes into hibernate either and I've set it up to do so numerous times. Sometimes, after clicking the IE icon, nothing happens until I click it again a few minutes later. However, it then opens up 2-3 IE windows instead of the original one that I wanted.

I can't get a hijack this log because I can't find the hijack this download. Does the download via the described link, show up for other people?

Any opinion's as to their ability to stop unwanted stuff from getting in, ease of setup & use would be appreciated.

For a couple weeks now, My laptop has been making a "pop" sound everytime on start up after the windows logo comes together it makes a faint pop sound then continues to the login screen. Everytime I muted or unmuted the speakers it would make the sound too. I changed my driver the the Windows default and it stopped but the pop won't.

Laptop Model / Manufacturer : Gateway NV53A
Sound Driver : Realtek (But changed to Windows Default)

A:Laptop speakers emit a "pop" sound after "Starting Windows"

The windows default is the culprit here.

When your system boots, drivers started one after another, the pop sound came in because the default driver is not built to especially manage your audio card.

Download the driver from the manufacturer according to your model, install it and I assure you all will be fine.

Hiya, I could use a little help resolving what should be a simple problem. It's really a long story, but to skip to the important part, I'll just recount this little tale:

I wanted to delete some files off of an old external hard drive to make space for some new stuff. It didn't matter, since the files I was deleting had been long since copied to a new drive. However, Vista, in its infinite wisdom, told me I couldn't delete the files, and it was for my own good. I politely said, "okay, Vista! Thanks for keeping me honest!"

But then I muttered, "I already have a mother" under my breath, and proceeded to go behind Vista's back and turn off User Account Control so I could delete the files anyway. Well, I knew that wasn't the best idea, so I immediately turned UAC back on afterwards, but it was too late. Vista caught me, and after the second restart, smote me with a problem I'd seen once before: nearly every program on my computer was said to have been closed after it "encountered a problem" or some nonsense, and when restarted again, the disk checker was run, found numerous problems, and did whatever it had to do to go about fixing them all.

Now I'm not sure what all that was about, because everything seems to be running okay now, save for one minor thing. That little "click" sound you get when navigating windows explorer was nowhere to be heard. I tried another restart and another disk check, b... Read more

Do you recommend "basic" or "dynamic" volume/partition method in Windows 10?

I plan to format a new 4TB HDD to be used for 3 purposes:

1. A secondary disk for windows paging file. Size = 3xRAM = 50 GB
2. Data drive (mydocs, music, video, photo, downloads, etc.) ~3.45 GB
3. Space for a image of my OS + apps of ~500GB

The OS and apps are on a separate SDD.

A:"Basic" or "Dynamic volume/partition method for HDD?

I'd keep the page file on SSD (you want it on the fastest drive you have) and have one partition on the new drive. There is no need to create a separate partition for system images - they can just go in their own folder.

Hi, anyone know off hand which service controls the clipboard, copy and paste function? Back story is that a lady I know caught something nasty, it's disabled a number of services including copy and paste. I was able to run some programs to get most of it off but it's left it nearly useless. ie. scripts are disabled, installer is disabled etc. I just was wondering if anyone knew the service off hand that controls re-enabling the clipboard functions so that I might be able to back up her important pics and files and then do a repair install.

Thanks in advance.

A:Solved: Clipboard control in "services"

I would either look in services.msc for either clipboard or clipbook and make sure they are both enabled. In any event, honestly, i would back up the user's data and just fresh install, once a machine is infected it can never be truely trusted again. If you have that much problem as well with the file, maybe get a linux disc to help you out and copy the files through that.

Yesterday my computer went crazy.
I have a Dell Latitude D531, running Win Xp Professional Version 2002 SP3.

At the end of my shift I had many windows open in Rockmelt and Google Crome and I just closed the . When I came home I opened the lid and waited for like 10 min and the only thing I saw was a "on" blask screen. I held in the power button to turn off the computer.

Turned it on and after that I lost:
1. Internet connection both cable and wireless
2. The PC won't read USB pen.
3. It won't turn off properly, and up in a blue screen and stays there.
4. Lost also sound on the computer.

I have tried the following sollutions:
- Tried to reset TCP/IP but it just hangs up.
- Tried to uninstall sound driver, just hangs up.
- Tried to uninstall network adapters, but just hangs there.

I have not installed any new programs for ages.

You can also download the ISO image for Drive Fitness Test in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot off of the newly created CD and run the short and extended tests on the HDD to test the integrity of the drive.

I've had very few computer problems over the years, but lately I've been hit with a couple doozies. I'm returning to TechGuy because of the fantastic support given during my last issue (

Thanks again to CyberTech....ok, but here's what's going on now.

My internet connection has been spotty due to the number of obstructions and distance from my Wireless Router, but when it works it works great. In the past if I lost my connect I simply would right click on the little icon in the System Tray and click "Repair". This would usually do the trick. Occasionally, I have to reset my modem and router to restore the connection.

For the past couple days when I click on "Repair" my computer suddenly, and without warning, shuts completely off!!!???? and restarts. I loose any work that I happen to have open and the system runs a DiskChk due to the sudden shut down. There are a number of things that show up on the Blue Start Up Screen but it all flies by so fast....even if I could read it I would have no idea what to make of it.

Would there be a setting that tells the system to Shut down upon running "Repair"....that would seem a little excessive.

Hoping someone out there has some ideas.

Thanks in advance.

I had to reinstall Windows XP in order to fix a previous problem. The installation seemed to proceed without any trouble. However, immediately after the reinstallation, whenever I attempt to boot up, the mouse (USB optical) which previously was fine, is inoperative. At the end of the boot up a screen appears which says,
"The feature is on a CD ROM or other removable disk that is not available. Insert status disk and click ok."'
I don't know what disk is required. Trying the Windows XP disk in the D drive did not help.
If I click OK the following screen comes up,
"..........try to find the installation package status.msi in a folder from which you can install the product Status."

I am running Windows XP SP3, fully updated, on an Acer lap top PC.

I have several folders full of .mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. To do this I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

The two new columns appear, but the format of the "Duration" column appears to be "hours:minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03" for most .mp3's, when what I want to see is 'hours:minutes:seconds", e.g. "00:03:45".

This also happens for video files (.avi files), e.g. all my episodes of "Heroes" (sad, I know) have a duration of "00:42" instead of "00:42:xx".

Here are two pictures showing the problem with the .mp3's. The first is of Explorer showing the Duration as "Hours:Minutes":

The second picture is of the properties window of the first .mp3 in the list above:

I copied some .mp3 files to another (old) PC on my home network, and it displayed the duration field correctly:

I compacted my Outlook Express messages but they vanished except for the Sent ones. This was possible because the computer went into Sleep mode and restarted during the procedure. I read a previous thread about this (06-Jan-2009, 05:43) and located the .bat folders in the Recycler folder. I followed the second method suggested but when I tried to import the dbx file (renamed from bak) from the folder I created on my dektop, I got an error saying no messages could be found in the folder I created even though there is a 530Kb .dbx file sitting in the folder I point to.

Any suggestions?

I can still apply a picture as a desktop background from (say) Picasa.

I am writing my autobiography and my son (24yo) was helping me save my book to Google docs as a back up. It was too large so we decided to save the book in sections. We highlighted 25,000 of 130,000 words. I hit "copy" so I could paste it. He took the mouse and hit "cut".

It still didn't fit in google docs and I forgot about it. Word saved automatically, 25,000 words less. In the meantime, actually hours later, I copied an address for some silly cat website.

I recently changed the user account settings on my PC, password protecting the main administrator account (the default "Administrator" setting) and adding a second account with administrator privileges, for my 8-year old to use (decided she was getting old enough I didn't want her to see everything on the administrator account).

I came home today, turned the computer on, and the "Administrator" account did not appear on the log on screen. I have no idea what happened, and my mother and daughter (who were home all day), said it just appeared that way when they turned it on this afternoon. I went to the User Settings page from the Control Panel (logged into my daughter's account) and did not see it there either. However, just to see what would happen, I tried to create a new account with the title "Administrator" and a message popped up saying there is already an account with that name and I must choose a different name. This leads me to believe the account is still somewhere on the PC and has not been deleted.

My main concern is accessing the files, folders and settings that were on the old "Administrator" account. I can access most of them while logged onto my daughter's account (since it has administrator privileges) by going through the Documents and Settings but there are some files I can't seem to locate, as well as protected files I cannot open.

Hi everyone!

This is my first time to post in this forum. I searched the net for answers regarding my problem as states in my title above yet I can't find any definitive answers.

Here's what happened: I was transferring files from my sister's netbook (Win XP) to my laptop (Windows 7) using my USB flash drive. After I inserted the USB in one of the laptop's USB ports, my antivirus program initially detected that something's wrong with the USB drive; it said that it had a virus (autorun.inf and Recycler). As far as I am concerned, I turned off all autoplay notifications for any USB drives inserted to my laptop. After cleaning the USB drive of the autorun.inf and Recycler problems, I tried to open the USB drive usiing:

Right Click -> Explore

However, to my great surprise, the "Explore" option was missing and the only options left for opening my USB drive were these:

Open Autoplay...

Initially, my reaction was to load my antivirus program (ESET NOD32) and scan the USB drive, thinking that the USB drive had a virus infection of some sort. The scan didn't detect any virus or malware. So I tried using another USB drive to check if the same options will appear. And appear they did without the "Explore" option! I also tried inserting a DVD where I hid all my files; the same options stated above appeared without the "Explore" option.

So what I did was to scan my whole computer to see if there&... Read more
