Outlook Express launching on pressing "L" after fresh install

Q: Outlook Express launching on pressing "L" after fresh install

I have started facing a strange problem recently. I re-installed windows 2000 and tried SP2 and ie6 updates but problem still persists.

On pressing key "L" anywhere, it launches outlook express as a side-effect. This is true even when some other application is open and in focus. The opened window shows inbox folder in place of default home screen of outlook express. I have noticed that in folders pane in outlook express, pressing L selects Local Folder and pressing it again selects Inbox. However, in this case the window with inbox is opened out of nowhere. I tried by deleting files from profile that may cause this (Like shortcuts) and also checked with a new user but in vain. One thing I have observed is that when I use on-screen keyboard, L key is working fine. This makes me think that it is not a shortcut recognized by explorer. I checked keyboard with other operating system in my dual-boot configuration and it is working fine there.

I am not able to work in windows 2000 because of this problem. Any help would be appreciated.

TIA.

Hi pymehta

Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

I tried by deleting files from profile that may cause this (Like shortcuts) and also checked with a new user but in vain.Click to expand...

Meaning that you created a new User Account and the L key still persists in starting Outlook Express?

It is definitely the On Screen Keyboard.

Ugh, tried to duplicate your problem and I was successful!
My keys affected were e, f, l, m, r
Outlook Express was not opened with the L key, it went to the Welcome Screen!

On the On Screen Keyboard, I clicked the key that looks kind of like a calculator, between the Win Key and the Ctrl key.
Right side of the Space bar.

I don't know if I am out of the woods yet.
Until the On Screen keyboard actually let me type in this window, I clicked that key about four times.

Let us know what happens.

My computer illiterate uncle's computer is acting odd. Well, at least the display properties is. Every time he tries to apply or even press ok, the display properties window freezes, no matter which tab he goes and what he changes. The computer itself does not freeze and every thing else is perfectly able to run without any harm when the display properties window is frozen. What I noticed (and he didn't) was that after a certain amount of minutes (around 3 or 5 minutes) the display properties becomes unfrozen and you are able to fully operate the window without any hassle.

When I end tasked the display properties, it said that Rundll32 has ended or whatever (the usual thing it says).

What I found odd is that when he would change his resolution, the background would practically cut in half. One part (usually the top) would stay the normal background picture and the other half of the picture would turn black.

I've never really encountered this problem before.

For extra info: he's using Windows XP.

Thanks.

My mother was having problems with her computer at work and we decided to do a fresh install of Windows 7. Now, multiple programs, including Windows Explorer, are crashing with a "StackHash" error and I don't know what that means. Attached is the picture of the error when I right-click Computer and go to Properties. I can't even preview this screenshot because the Preview program crashes. I'm also having the same problem on multiple other programs. Is it perhaps a bad hard drive, RAM, or graphics card?

Then Next attempt "Attempt at booting failed at checkpoint (WRIT).
This is my Dell XP Home after a fresh format and reinstall fully updated plus added all my programs etc.
I kept trying and eventually got it to boot up.

Actually the first three attempts never made it past the 1st screen and the little animmation was frozen.Pessing F-12 or F-2 did nothing.
Each time I powered off and on again after that I got a little further until finally I was able to click "last known good settings" and it went through.
Then when I try to enter a web-page and click, I get "Lookup key not located" (or something similar,I forgot to write it down.

During operation, even while playing games I am continually having this message pop up; "Microsoft Feeds Synchronization has encountered a problem. If you were working on something the info may be lost.We are sorry for the inconvenience."
I though a fresh install after format might be trouble free. What would cause all this?
The reason for the reinstall was trouble booting. Much Thanks-Brian (on my back-up comp.)
edit; I ran the Dell Resourse CD (PN0Y5994) and the Hard drive and memory passed the diagnostics.

I am configuring a newly built computer with Win 7 (fresh, new full install) Pro. All had been going well until I tried to install Zone Alarm and found problems with it accepting and registering the license. After a couple of chat sessions, things pointed to Permissions issues. At that point, I did some reading and discovered that my default Administrator account was not active, so I ran commands to fix that. That still did not allow me to delete some of the Zone Alarm folders or to have the license "stick" in the registry. I also tried the following permissions "fix" for administrator accounts, but that did not help.

1. Enable the Administrator account and set its password.
2. Reboot into Safe Mode.
3. Log on as Administrator.
4. Click Start
5. Type the three letters cmd
6. Press Ctrl+Shift+Enter
7. Run the process as Administrator.
8. Type the following commands and press Enter after each:
takeown /f Q:\ /a /r /d y
icacls Q:\ /t /c /grant administrators:F System:F "%UserName%":F
(Answer "yes" when prompted "Are you sure?")
(Replace Q: with the actual drive letter on the problem disk)

I think it has something to do with the Harddrive. It used to have 2 hard drives set in RAID and I took one hard drive out and just have one. I'm pretty sure I took out the RAID config but I'm not sure.
But I do fresh install after fresh install and the whole thing takes 30 mins to do everything and when I try to start windows it says Starting Windows for 10+ mins and its never done this before. Im not sure if this happened when I removed the hard drive or not. And also when I start the computer is says like No harddrive found but still boots up and takes me to windows, and my Hard drive shows in the BIOS.

Please please pelase help me lol. I've been at this for 3 weeks now trying to find out a solution. This has nothing to do with a virus, etc. Its fresh installs. I've tried new Hard Drives and the same thing happens, I tried Windows 8 and the same thing happens. I think it has something to do with the RAID which I don't know how to access to delete or it has something to do with the BIOS but I reset that back to factory so I'm not sure.

Thanksssssssss!

EDIT: I also haven't added any new hardware.

Hi guys- October is coming soon - and as I just did a quick search here in the forum, there does not seem to be a compiled list of suggested tweaks after a fresh install. For instance I just read about tweaking the Aero Peek speed from 400ms to 40. It was a new one to me, but something like that might be handy. WHich got me wondering what else might be....

SO what I'd like to see is your suggestions and instructions for tweaks after you do a clean install (like many of us will do come October). Some folk with BuKu RAM may disable the page file, add certain screen savers from certain sites or add specific tools and gadgets... What are you planning to do with YOUR next clean install?

A:Time to start "Fresh Install" tweaks list!

One of the first things I do is disable UAC .

Them goes system restore etc and unwanted services.

Hello all, I just signed up on this forum because it seems like a good place to ask for BSOD help!
Basically for about the last two months I have been getting random blue screens roughly every few days. They don't necessarily happen under load, most of the time it's just happened while browsing the web. I reinstalled Windows 7 Ultimate x64 a week ago, but have still have a few BSOD's since then (so it makes me think it's a hardware issue)

I have run Prime95 small FFT and blend for 4 hours with no errors. Memtest86+ also ran for 5 passes with no errors.
I built my PC around 5 months ago all with new hardware:

MSI P67A-GD53

2x2GB Kingston 1333MHz 7-7-7-21
HD 5550 (this is only temporary)
Corsair 650w
WD Blue 80GB (also temporary)

I followed the BSOD posting instructions, and will include a zip folder with all the info including dumps.
Grateful for any help, thanks!

Hello, all. I'm flirting with my sanity and have decided to finally reach out for help. I have been googling and searching these forums for the better part of 26 hours, yielding little in the way of results. I'm also browsing/typing with my cell phone; you might imagine nerve endings....

Anyhow, here's the story: OS is W7 x64 Ulti. oem disk in possession. Yesterday, I formatted c: then attempted to install OS. It installs without a hitch. After restart, process continues until right after "windows Is starting" display. The screen then goes black. The HDD activity LED goes to its intermittent blinking for system idle.

Attempting to restart via the smaller restart button case more often than not freezes machine. Using power button to cycle, same results all the way to the aforementioned screen.

In previous installation, I was dual booting Linux which lends to my suspicion of a corrupt MBR.

Startup recovery states that I may have plugged in some sort of peripheral - that's not the case though. I think it was referring to an instance when someone might leave in some sort of flash drive. Again, not the case.

I'm no where near a seasoned IT professional, but I've attempted everything that I know.

Diskpart shows two volumes and two partitions. The allotted sizes are correct, but it also states that both are "Primary " now, I wouldn't know any better, but I thought I would see the system partition read just that, system. Nevertheless... Read more

"The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered and unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "OK" to restart the computer, and the restart installation."

I have a home built computer using parts from Frys electronics. This is my second home built computer and is intended to be a game machine. I've managed to reach this point of the install. Windows 7 has been giving me trouble every step of the way, but this one has stumped me. This error message (above) appears right around the time I would expect to see my desktop. After loading as though everything is going fine, the error box shows up. I received a copy of windows 7 as an ISO file from a University of Washington faculty download, which I then mounted with daemon tools lite to find the setup1.box setup2.box and windows 7 exe file. to create the bootable file, I finally got a bootable copy of windows 7 burned to disk with imgburn @ 1x speed (tried initially with 8x and decided to do everything by the book after it gave me troubles). I then used that to install on a fresh and totally empty hard drive. The computer returned numerous error messages, which I have forgotten. A:Home Built Computer, Fresh Install Failing due to "unexpected error"

Literally as I finished typing this, the problem was resolved by my dad (we'd been tag teaming the issue for two days now.) I have a brand new build with Windows 8.1 freshly installed. Onboard graphics seem to work perfectly. I go to put in my old GTS 250, and it boots at a low resolution which is generally normal without drivers. I go and grab the latest stable Nvidia drivers. Installation completes and I restart my computer. I'm then greeted by a blue screen with a sad face telling me my computer can't boot.

Upon restart, it enters some sort of self-repair cycle, which--of course--is "unable to repair" my PC.

I throw in the 8.1 disc and proceed to do a manual startup repair. It fails.

I attempt to perform a system restore. It is frozen in the process of restoring for hours.

I format and reinstall Windows 8.1. I try using Windows Update instead of downloading the graphics drivers myself. After the first update completes and I restart my PC, I get the same blue-screen-sad-face message as before.

Is this a software or hardware issue? Any resources to point me in the right direction for remedying this situation would be greatly appreciated.

Hello TSG, I need a little help with a new XP installation.

A friend came to me with their computer to see if I could fix it for them. The problem was that they had accidentally downloaded a virus that made them unable to log into Windows after a reboot, the screen would appear with a cursor but the background would be black and that's as far as it would get.

I popped in the OEM XP disc from Dell and began to reinstall Windows over the old one. Everything seemed to install fine, but when the computer reboots the XP logo appears, then I get a screen that says "Setup is restarting..." then the computer restarts and it does the same thing again, restarting over and over.

I'm about to put the HDD as a slave on one of my computers and copy the data over and then re-partition the drive, but if anyone knows of a fix to this problem I would greatly appreciate the information.

Thanks TSG

I would say that i hope that anything they want to save has been saved to a flash drive or a cd before you begin.you cant install windows over or on top of the old one or unless im wrong you will have a real mess.It has to be a fresh reinstall.what u have to do is put in the cd and reboot and hit F12 to go to the boot order and have it boot from the cd. then you should see hit any key to boot from the cd and go from there.hope this helps.

Hi,

Just installed XP Pro on a fresh new hard disk, same as I've done before many times. The setup was working perfectly fine all day, but now after the self test it gives the following error:

DISK BOOT ERROR, REPLACE SYSTEM DISK..(etc)

I restart the machine again with the XP install disc in the CD drive, I'll get a "Press any key to boot from CD.." message. As expected If I hit a key, it boots from the XP CD and does the usual recovery console stuff.

But here's the weird part... if I wait for the CD prompt to time out, the system actually boots from the hard disk, into my fresh XP install! What!?

For the record, my BIOS boot order is HDD0->CD->FLOPPY. I have tried the fail safe BIOS defaults. I have ran the recovery console and tried 'fixboot' and 'fixmbr'. No progress.

I should also add that my ntldr, ntdetect and boot.ini files are all fine. I tried replacing them from a good machine, but no effect.

Hardware is all fine, it works if I put in another HD and boot from that.

Ran out of options now. Can anyone suggest some more?

David

My hard drive failed a few days ago, and I went out and bought a new one and installed a fresh copy of windows 7 onto it, and now I am having this weird problem...Every 10-15 seconds (not on a regular interval, fairly random) if my mouse is moving, it will freeze in place for about a half second, and then resume. if music/a movie is playing, the movie/music will freeze/glitch out as well for that same time period, and then resume as normal. I have reinstalled the OS, and messed with my CPU options in the BIOS, to no avail. Ran chkdsk on the hard drive, as well as windows memory diagnostic, and they both came up with nothing. I ran a virus scan with AVG and Spybot, but nothing on those either. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your dvd drive needs a driver. ask where you bought the machine what kind of dvd it is find and download the driver. while installing it will give you the option of installing third party drivers. I*nstall it then.

Hello forums people,

OS: Windows 7 professional
motherboard: Asus M4A78LT-M LE
CPU: AMD Athlon II x4

I've been wrestling with this all day.
Yesterday I re-installed Windows 7 professional 64 bit to get rid of 5 years of clutter. I was unable to install the OS with both 2GB sticks of RAM and my geForce 460 video card in.

I took out one RAM stick and the video card and installed the OS. Today, I am unable to start windows with the second RAM stick or the video card in.

To check the RAM sticks, I have put each RAM stick individually into each of the two RAM slots on the motherboard without a problem, I only have the problem when both sticks are in.

The BSOD occurs in the exact same way as when I boot with the video card installed. I get to the "starting windows" screen, the little colored balls animate for a moment and then freeze. Then I go to the bsod where I am told acpi.sys is responsible. The way that two pieces of hardware individually cause the same crash makes me think that it is not a problem with the video card or the motherboard physically either.

I have updated my BIOS today to the latest version. I have run the windows 7 startup repair from my intall CD, it failed at the "System Files Integrity Check and Repair" test with error code 0x490

I am unable to boot in safe mode with 2 RAM sticks or the video card.

I'm looking up cmd windows memory tests I can do, as well as updating the chipset now. I would appreciate any direction,

Severin

Hello there!

It does sound like Hardware but the best way to test the RAM is using the program called MemTest86+ follow this article Run Hardware Diagnostic : Hardware Diagnostic | Captain Debugger (RAM and GPU)

This driver Bs_def.sys i.e. BIOS Flash Driver is a driver file from company AsusTek Computer Inc. maybe it's good idea to re-flash the BIOS.

So I recently installed Windows 7 x64, and suddenly my wireless connection is no longer working. It worked fine with the previous Vista 64-bit OS. I'm able to connect to a different router, and the internet works fine. However, I cannot connect to my Home router. Other laptops are able to connect to it just fine (running the Windows 7 OS).

I updated the network adapter drivers, reset the router and modem, don't have the Bonjour service at all, updated everything Microsoft had for me, and tried that spoofing Network Address solution. When I try to ipconfig /renew, it freezes and eventually says "DHCP could not be reached" or something along those lines.

After all this it still doesn't work, and I still get the "169" IP address when I ipconfig.

The router is Linksys WRT54GS. My wireless network adapter is Atheros AR9281.

Any suggestions?

Hi and welcome

the 169.254.x.x. ip is local to the card so something in either the driver or card is hosed. can you type device manager in search? go to the wifi/lan (network) tab and tell us if the driver is listed, and working. Is there a yellow triangle on it? is there any other "unknown" devices with yellow on them?

Alright...well I reformatted my harddrive, in a weird way I suppose. Plugged it in as Slave to a drive running Win 2000. Formatted through that since it had DOS and I was more familiar with doing it that way.

Anyways I have it back as a primary and the drive should be empty. I'm trying to install Win XP Pro onto the new drive, I've got some boot disks, but for some reason whenever I boot from them I can't get it to recognize the hard disk. It shows up in the bios and I can rearrange the boot order but I tend to run into an error that says "ntldr is missing press Ctrl-Alt-Del to resart". And whenever I try to go C: from the prompt it gives me the generic error that the drive does not exist. Both my cd roms get recognized, one a DVD and one a CDRW so I'm more than pleased on that front as I was anticpating problems with that. Leave it to a computer to always prove me wrong.

I've done some research into the issue but most of the sites I've read say that it has to do with left over files from a previous installation of Windows when you try to upgrade. Well seeing as how I formatted my drive I don't see how I'd have left over files on it. Anyone know where I should start?

Ok so I know that in order to delete the partition with Windows I must first boot from the Windows XP SP2 disc. I also know that in order to do this, I must change the boot priority in my computer's CMOS settings. I already did that, and whenever I restart my computer, it will say "Boot from Disc: _" but then it boots from the hard drive anyways.

My disc is not scratched in any way.

My CD/DVD drive recognizes and reads discs with no problems.

On top of it all I made the mistake of originally using the install feature from the window that pops up when you place the CD in the drive while Windows is running. So I have both Windows XP Home AND Windows XP Pro installed on the same partition.

Please someone help! I just want things to work the way they're supposed to and this is frustrating to no end. I'll be on WoW while I wait for a reply. Thank you very much!

Im not sure if this will completely take care of the problem listed by the OP, bu when i searched Google for "disable outlook in firefox" that thread was the first thing that popped up. I have found out how to change the mailto: action in firefox (3.5.7) to stop outlook from opening.

Tools>options>applications
find "mailto" in content type column, and click the drop down box in the action column. There you can select from several mail clients including gmail.

This same procedure can be used to select which application opens most relivent file types.

hope this helps. and sorry if i dug up an old post for no reason.

When Outlook Express is opened, every e-mail that was sent "return reciept requested" causes Outlook Express to try to send a return receipt, which then fails resulting in an error message.

OE ignores all changes to the "return receipt" functions and continues to try to send them even before they are opened; when the mouse hovers over the particular e-mail.

A recent malware infection (which has been removed) caused a change in the registry and turned off Task Manager (which has been corrected). I suspect the problem with OE is also a registry issue, but cannot Google any information on this specific function or issue.

Two questions:

1. Is there a registry entry that controls the fuction of OE's "return receipt" function ?

2. If OE is uninstalled & reinstalled, will the stored e-mails be lost ?

An aggravating factor is that sbcglobal does not have a configuration setting to prevent duplicate e-mails from being downloaded and a recent change to the e-mail account by sbcglobal has resulted in the messages being duplicated 2 and 3 times in OE, and it is attempting to download another 4000 ( ! ) more, which will also all be duplicates.

This "return receipt" problem is preventing the ability to delete the duplicate & unwanted e-mails, so OE's functionality is reduced to nil.

Also, is there a static limit to the number of messages that OE can store & manage ?

The other day I realised I hadn't seen the Outlook Express 'compact messages' pop-up for some time. Sure enough, when I checked my recycle bin, the most recent bak files were at least 3 weeks old when I usually have to compact once a weekish. I did a manual compact and this worked ok. But, curious, I've been keeping an eye on the compact count check in the registry to see what happens when it reached the 100 mark. And it never reaches the 100 mark. The highest I've seen it is at 19, when suddenly it reverts to zero, seemingly of its own free will. Yesterday it was reading 5 and then when I checked an hour later expecting to see 7 or 8, it was reading 2! Needless to say, I don't touch anything in the registry, - just look.
I've been Googling this but I can't see any references to this particular behaviour anywhere. As I said, I can compact manually but I'd prefer not to have to. I am a bit worried that my OE might be corrupted. Any ideas anyone?

A:Outlook Express "Compact count check" behaving oddly.

Just when you think you've heard everything, I must say that's a new one on me.

Compacting is Identity specific, so I would think the problem would be in your current Identity (of course a lot of people would look at your problem as a solution to out of control compacting ).
You could try creating a new Identity and see if it does the same thing.
If the compacting works properly in the new one, Import your mail from the old Identity.

A:recovering lost email in outlook express after "compacting"

Hiya and welcome to Tech Support Guy

I've moved your thread to Web and Email for more response

Have you tried to see if there are any bak files in the Recycle Bin:

Make sure Outlook Express is not running.
Open the Recycle Bin on your Windows Desktop .
Locate the ".bak" files corresponding to the Outlook Express folders you want to recover.
The ".bak" file will be named like the folder in Outlook Express.
To restore a folder called "Archive", look for "Archive.bak", for example.
Click on the ".bak" file with the right mouse button.
Select Restore from the menu.
Locate the file in Windows explorer and open the folder it's contained in.
Drag and drop the ".dbx" file corresponding to the Outlook Express folder you want to recover to your Desktop.
In the Outlook Express store folder, click on the ".bak" file to be recovered with the right mouse button.
Select Rename from the menu.
Change the ".bak" file extension to ".dbx".
If the file was called "Archive.bak", for example, make sure it is named "Archive.dbx" now.
Open Outlook Express.
If your emails have been recovered, delete the ".dbx" file you moved to the Desktop.

Also if you do not find the files in the above location search your computer for *.Bak

Last night a popup message from McAfee told me that Dell Security center was trying to access the internet. I was in the midst of downloading and reading email, and being a dummy, I gave one-time permission.

Soon afterward, I began to suspect a virus, as I received a virus notification popup and an email from my ISP re: a deleted virus. As I was deleting items from my inbox, Outlook Express froze. I tried restarting, and OE hangs on the inbox and hogs 96%+ system resources.

This morning, my ISP program showed an error and my Antivirus was corrupted. I did a system restore and redownloaded the antivirus, which solved my problem with getting on the 'net. I've scanned and come up with nothing and downloaded a special scan and remove tool (Stinger) from McAfee for the virus it warned me about yesterday....Sober, I think. But still, OE hangs up on the Inbox and I can't read or remove or access the toolbar. It says "no email selected."

Any ideas?

Hi, I just got a new laptop and I'm trying to export/import my address book from Outlook Express. When I import the addresses it only imports individual names and not "groups." It there a way to import groups as well? When I exported the address book from the old laptop I used the "text file (comma separated values)" option. Is this the right one to use?
Thanks.

A:"Outlook Express" Export/Import Address Book

Hi 2praisehim

No, it will not Export the Groups, you will need to recreate them.
The .csv file is the best backup, this format makes it available to Import to other programs.

As an alternative, you can make a copy of the .wab file and copy it over to the new computer.
To find the location of the original Address Book,
Open the Address Book in Outlook Express:
Tools > About Address Book
The directory will appear along with the name of the .wab file, which usually is the User Account name.wab

Navigate to that directory and copy the .wab file.
Copy the .wab file to the Desktop on the laptop,
find the location of the Address Book for Outlook Express,
Check this directory on the Laptop,
C:\Documents and Settings\User Account\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book\User Account.wab
rename the .wab file to User Account.wab.old
Copy the backup .wab file to that directory and rename it to the same name as the current .wab file: User Account.wab

In Outlook Express, click the Address Book icon to open, the replaced Address Book should appear.

Let us know if that works for you or not.

This link has more information on the Address Book for Outlook Express:

Hello eddie,

I am just not able to access Windows Update - haven't been able to for ages. Have posted about it on the site before. I get a "done" message "but with errors on page" and then an error script. Anyway, re security fixes not being accepted because "IE6 need to be installed". I do have IE 6, as I said, and here is the version:

6.00.2800.1106.

Thanks for any light you can throw on this matter.

A:Latest "critical" Security patches: ... Oct 10: Outlook Express

Okay

It says:

The fix for this issue was included in Windows XP Service Pack 1, and in Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1.

Now, you have IE6 SP1:

6.00.2800.1106 Internet Explorer 6 Service Pack 1 (Windows XP SP1)

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q164539

So, it looks like you should have the update already. But, you should be able to check either via the Help again, or

To verify that the patch has been installed on the machine, open Internet Explorer, select Help, then select About Internet Explorer and confirm that Q328676 is listed in the Update Versions field. Alternatively, from Outlook Express select Help, then select About Outlook Express and confirm that the msoe.dll matches the version called out in Q328676.

I am not postitive but i think they are saved in .WAB or .CVS files. With OE open you can go to files>export>address book and i think that it can be saved to a floppy. I tried it as a .cvs(comma separated values) and saved it to floppy which when opened looked like an Excel file. Running Outlook Express 6.0 on Windows 2000 all latest service packs and updates for both. Also installed is Outlook 2003.

Outlook is used for Office e-mail and can not be removed.

OE6 is used for personal e-mail accounts and News group access which is required for job support.

I have 2 e-mail accounts set up in OE6 and the "Leave a copy on server" checkbox is supposed to be checked all the time for both accounts. On average about once a month the box becomes unchecked on one or both accounts. This is a problem because quite often I will read and delete e-mails thinking that the e-mails will be retrieveable at home from the server. When I find that the e-mails are not on the server I can look back at the office and find that "leave a copy on server" check box is unchecked. I am the only one with access to my machine and those accounts. Has any one heard of this before? I was unable to come up with anything on the MS support knowledge base. and don't think that I should be charged $ to report a bug to Microsoft through their tech support.

IF ANYONE HAD EVER ENCOUNTERED THE FOLLOWING SITUATION, PLEASE GIVE ME A HAND. WILL APPRECIATE.

I use the "Outlook Express" for my email for years, no problem.
I had been using ISP for my email server and have my own email account set up, so far so good.
I had checked the box "delete from mail server after deleting from trash" and it works out just good. This is because, no need to log-on the mail server each time to clean up the read emails by hand, this way could release enough space for receiving email. Is because the ISP charge on over-quota space for emails, or just will block excess emails over the allowed space.
The problem started, when a friend told me could set the email folder away from the hard-drive C, I set it as per his suggestion. Then, the "auto-cleaning function" stopped performing.
I asked the ISP and was told because "Outlook Express" is designed by Mircosoft Inc. so they could not help.
Then, I set it back to the "defaulted folder", but the function could not be recovered.
This is quite annoying that I have to log-on the email server and clean up the emails daily by hand.

After 4 years with no answer, I hope this helps someone else and saves the obligatory 1/2 hour searching dead posts with no helpful solution (in 2 minutes flat).

HERE'S HOW TO 'FIX' THE 'NO ADDRESS FOUND' ERROR: (1.) Open Address book and simply double click on the faulty contact entry. (2.) The 'Properties' window should pop up, now click on 'name' tab and add a dash after the 'last' name field entry. The 'display' field should reflect the additional dash after the name. (3.) Now click 'OK' to save changes then close the address book. (4.) Now create a new message and begin typing the contact name which should auto-fill the name showing a dash after name. Now it should work, BUT the extra dash may be seen by the recipient. TRY ADDING A DIFFERENT CHARACTER AFTER THE NAME IF DASH LOOKS FUNNY. GOOD LUCK ----dUCKBILL

Hello tech helper(s),

Thank you in advance for your assistance. I am running XP on a vanilla PC, and have installed IE 7 and Outlook Express 6. I updated IE 7 just last night, to make sure that that is all in order.

All works except for one thing, and it's so frustrating! When I am in Outlook Express, with my Inbox populated by many messages, and I try to do a "Find Message" on that folder, all that happens is that I get a blank results window, regardless of what search criteria I select.

I searched the forum and found one relevant message from long ago, but the answer to that message is not helpful to me.

I've tried various antidotes. I could try to re-install Outlook Express, but doing so seems challenging. And I fear losing my Inbox messages altogether if I do that.

If you can give any advice, I'll appreciate that. In fact, I'm so desparate I'm willing to pay for some effective help.

Thank you,

I messed up! Sometime back, I tried some stuff I shoulda left alone! It happened months ago, and I forget the details (yeah, I know, if I forget what I messed up, or how, then how can I ask for or expect any help!). Short version: MSIE v6, running under Windows XP home edition SP1 (yeah, yeah) no longer sees the existence of Outlook Express v6, which is still, indeed, fully installed on my puter. Trouble is, I can't go to Tools/Internet Options/Programs and choose OE as my default e-mail reader, which I've been using for years now, since MSIE doesn't know it's there!

I've tried removing and reinstalling OE, from the Control Panel. The "remove" option takes only a fraction of second and then ends. Hard for me to believe it's really removing anything. So if it didn't, then reinstalling won't do anything cuz the "install" process, starting from one of MS's online sources of the original program, would only detect that OE is still on my hard drive, and would stop immediately. Indeed, that's what seems to happen, when I try reinstalling OE after trying the "remove" option in Control Panel.

I haven't tried reinstalling MSIE v6. And I sure don't want to have to go all the way back to something like format c: and using Dell's CDs to start all over again!

NAV is certainly part of the problem. When I just try launching OE, I get a NAV-oriented message about trying to create an empty folder... Read more

I'm using Win XP Home and subscribe to Microsoft's automatic updates and kind of trust Bill's kids not to corrupt anything in the process.

So the other day after an update session (Service Pact 3 maybe? ) When I restarted the computer OE was totally unavailable, desktop icon gone, couldn't find in "Programs". So I am wondering what happened. I did run a "find" for .dbx files and all the OE file catagories I had before came up as still existing but I can't access them without the main program, at least with my limited knowledge.

Should I try to reinstall OE 6? And where do I find it? Or what. I have had this computer for 4 or 5 years and lots of mail is stored in the OE files. I have a secondary question, if I ever do recover my old OE can I transfer some of the files to Word or some other program that I want to archive instead of burdening OE with them.

I have accessed my current e-mails thru my ISP since the disappearnce of OE but would sure like to have the other archive files available again.

Any help is welcome, thanks

Dick

David Einstein, San Francisco Chronicle "computer guru" has stated that when one "deletes" e-mail FROM the Deleted Items Folder, that instead of being finally deleted they go to a hidden subfolder. This is why, he states, periodically Outlook Express will put up a query-box asking whether one would like "old messages" to be compressed to save space. Einstein says that what actually is being asked, is for permission to delete, deleted items, finally and forever from the hidden deleted items folder.

That Einstein's statement is correct, is implied by the fact that un-intentionally deleted items, from the deleted items folder, can easily be restored. That "restore" comes, naturally, from the hidden subfolder.

OK....my query is: What is the directory and file-name of that hidden subfolder?

A:Outlook Express "deleted items" subfolder

Hi there. Welcome aboard.

This isn't a hidden folder. It's called Deleted Items. If you can't see it, click on View on the top bar, then click layout. Make sure that Folder list is checked. Click apply then OK. You should now see the deleted items folder on the left.

Win XP Home Ed; Outlook Express 6.0. Have two identities. Yesterday one of the identities began to not allow moving unwanted messages to the Delete folder. Also could not move them to any other existing folder.

Each time try to delete or move or drag and drop get the following error message: "The selected message(s) could not be moved. An error has occurred."

Can delete emails by hitting the Shift-Delete keys but not desirable. Found that I can create a new folder and move or drag and drop to it and then delete the new folder but also not desirable.

Other identity functions normally.

Any ideas? TJThiel

A:Outlook Express "The selected messages could not be moved"

Sounds like the inbox may be getting corrupted.

Move the messages you want to keep into a folder that is not a subfolder of the Inbox just in case something goes wrong or you have to end up deleting the inbox file.

Then make sure hidden files and file extensions are showing (My Computer>Tools>Folder Options>View tab, check "Show hidden files and folders," uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types" and "Hide protected operating system files).

Then in Outlook Express in the identity having the problem, go to Tools>Options>Maintenance tab>Store Folder button. Once you know the exact location of the store folder that identity is using (there will be more than one with a long alphanumeric name so be sure you've got the exact name), close OE, navigate to it and delete the "folders.dbx" file. If that doesn't solve the problem, go back and delete the "inbox.dbx" file.

If you have to delete inbox.dbx, OE will open with a new, empty Inbox. Just move your saved messages back into it.

I use Internet Explorer 7 and Outlook Express 6 to access my MSN email account. At times, when opening Outllook Express, it will not automatically search for my new messages. It says I am offline & asks me if I want to be online. I have to click on "Send/Receive Messages" to activate my search for new messages. If I restart my computer and then click on Outlook Express, it will automatically search my Inbox immediately, everytime. I went into options and I have the box checked that says "Send and Receive Messages at Startup". It seems Outlook Express isn't recognizing that I am always online. Any suggestions?

Hello: I have this problem quite often when downloading my email through Outlook Express. It always occurs at the start of the day, never during the day, although I do “Send/Receive” dozens of times a day.

My email appears to download normally, but then I get this error message:
<<Message number 1 could not be retrieved. Account: 'pop3.phonecoop.coop', Server: 'pop3.phonecoop.coop', Protocol: POP3, Server Response: '-ERR Can't open the message file - it's gone!', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800420CD>>>

Sometimes this message is followed by several more, beginning “Message number 2 could not be retrieved ...” and so on.

I know for sure of at least two recent emails which have been sent but which I’ve never received. Could this be why?

I have three questions:
1. What is this and can I fix it?
2. Can I stop it happening again?
3. Are the emails which couldn't be retrieved lost forever? Or is there any way I can read them, or at least find out who they came from, so I can ask for them to be re-sent?

(Actually, that’s about five questions, but what am I - a statistician?)

Many thanks for any help - what a great site this is.

I have used Outlook Express for several years without any major complaints.

Now, however, for whatever reason, next to certain messages I find small "plus sign" boxes which allow me to expand and collapse conversations/threads, like in Newsgroups. For my e-mail set-up, I really don't care to have this function. I find it both disruptive and confusing. I liked it much better the way it was before when all my incoming messages appeared individually and precisely in chronological order. The way things are now, I often find it necessary to go back and click on "plus signs" to find new messages hidden underneath. In one thread I found a message which didn't even belong in that particular thread.

Using Outlook Express Tools I at least figured out how to automatically expand conversations rather than have them collapsed. I don't believe this solved my problem, though. I would like to get rid of the "plus signs" altogether.

Could someone please tell me how to return to the simpler set-up I once had?

Thank you very much.

A:Solved: Outlook Express: How do I get rid of "plus signs"?

Strange how these problems run in groups. Just recently there was one that sounds exactly like your problem. See if this helps.

OE->View->Current View. Untick Group messages by conversation
Should have Show all messages checked off.

Not really necessary to read the other thread but here it is anyway.

I then click on "apply" and I think fine & dandy. But no, within about an hour the default setting "127.0.0.1" has reared its ugly head again and thus my emails dont come thru'. What can I do to rectify this? Is it an ISP problem? Is it a Dell Computer problem? Or is it a Windows XP problem?

Does anyone know what it means when messages in the Sent Mail folder in Outlook Express have a header line "This message is being Watched"? This appears in a beige bar above the "From" line in the email. All my emails prior to 12/2/01 show this message, and none after that date show it -- and of course the Microsoft help site provided absolutely no information.

A:Outlook Express "watched" message

From a newsgroup thread:

"From outlook express' help:

In both mail and news, you can watch a conversation that is of particular
interest you. A conversation is an original message and all its replies.

In your Inbox or newsgroup message list, select the conversation you wish to
watch, and on the Message menu, click Watch Conversation.
If your message list's Watch/Ignore column is turned on, the watch icon
will appear next to all the messages of a watched conversation.

Tip
You can customize the color of your watched messages to make them stand out
better. Click the Tools menu, and then click Options. On the Read tab, at
the end of the Highlight watched messages with the color line, select the
color you want, and then click OK."

Please help!

For the second time in recent months I have had a problem with lost messages. On Friday night when I attempted to shut down my PC, suddenly I received an onscreen message box indicating that my messages were being "compacted." I have Win XP Pro, Service Pack 2 and use Outlook Express.

Someone told me that Win XP Pro with SP 2 automaticallly gives a prompt after 100 closings of OE, asking if you want to compact your messages. The strange thing is that both times I've had this problem, I was never given a prompt. In other words, the compacting started on its own, which was completely unexpected. First I lost my Inbox messages; next, I lost my Sent Items. Is this normal? Is this an issue only with OE? If so, maybe I should change to another e-mail program.

In the past I used both Macallan and DBXtract in an attempt to retrieve my lost messages, but had not success with either program. Someone had given me instructions for these programs, but I had trouble following them. Still, I'm not sure if either of them would help retrieve my messages.

I'm wondering if what I'm experiencing is really "normal" or if it may perhaps be the result of a virus problem I had recently. I am totally confused by what is happening, and I have no clue yet as to how to either prevent or avoid it.

I would greatly appreciate hearing from anyone who might be able to help.

Thank you.

Have you recently made any changes to your software? This behavior generally manifests itself after upgrading/downgrading/changing IE, OE, or installing certain service packs. It can also occur if you remove the Windows Address Boox (which OE requires).

Provide some additional details and I can point you to the appropriate solution for your situation.

Hello all,

Recently, I have noticed that for most messages received, there is a paperclip icon in the Inbox which would indicate that there is an attachment to the message.

When I open the message, there are no attachments.

All I have done recently is uninstall Nortons Internet Security and install AVG Free antivirus and Windows defender. I had also installed and uninstalled Zone Alarm and Ewido Antispyware before finishing up with my AVG and Defender configuration.

Any help or explanation as to why this is happening would be appreciated.

So I've had to format and reinstall my Win XP Home SP3 a few times now, and each time the same thing happens with Outlook Express.

Before I formatted the first time, I went through and backed up all of my accounts and folders. After the format/reinstall I imported the accounts back into OE. I also use SpamPal for my spam filtering, so I redownloaded and installed that. However, when I click Send/Receive, the connection fails. The last time I had to do this, my e-mail failed for about a week before it would connect. I thought it was my Host (I have my own domain that I use for e-mail), but now I think it has something to do with a setting on my system.

SpamPal only deals with INcoming e-mails, and has no connection to OUTgoing. However, my connection fails with both. I have even tried going to my host Cpanel site and doing an automatic setup of OE for one of my accounts, and that still fails. Does anyone have any ideas as to what's going on?

The error message I'm getting is
The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'Name', Server: '127.0.0.1', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

And Yes, the incoming server is supposed to be 127.0.0.1. That's to direct it through SpamPal

I'm not ruling out the cause of this issue being malware of some sort, however, I have already tried those programs which are accessible to me with the aim of resolving this issue -- Avast! Free Antivirus, Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (Premium), and Dr.Web CureIt!, including free Anti-rootkit programs by BitDefender, Kaspersky, Avast!, and Malwarebytes' itself -- only Malwarebytes', Avast!, and Dr.Web CureIt! seem to detect something on the computer, most of which are false positives, while others trivial (removed), yet did not seem to fix the issue.

This only started off with a rapid-clicking after every startup of the computer which can be fixed by simply pressing the "F5" key which refreshes the page. Only to randomly return again. I know it rapidly clicks when I hover over the cursor to the start menu and it suddenly close-opens the menu too fast enough for a man to click on it.

Eventually this has gotten worst by also affecting the "Enter" key which auto-presses itself by a lot sometimes whenever I am typing including now. If I am on a Word program, it auto-clicks the "Enter" key to a point that multiple lines are skipped until I refreshed the page by clicking on the "F5" key.

Moreover, I know either or both of the problems occur when the start menu suddenly pops up without me even clicking on it. The most annoying part of this problem is when it rapidly clicks on a certain program and causes it to run multiple instances of the ... Read more

This sounds like a hardware issue to me.

I'm going to assume you've tried swapping out the keyboard / mouse...
(or unplugging one, the other or both)

We recently had a similar issue where a user had a graphics tablet (and puck) attached to their machine. This decided to play up nastily with the mouse - do you have anything similar attached?

I would start off by removing all input devices, boot up the PC and see whether it happens, if not attach them back one by one until it starts again.
If you find it's a specific piece of hardware, I would update the drivers etc and see whether that improves things.
If not, I would just format and rebuild the machine myself as I don't have a lot of time for investigating too many root causes.
Perhaps someone else will have an idea before you resort to that...

In Outlook Express, under Tools, there is a category "Synchronize All". Often times, I find it necessary to click on "Synchronize All" to get "all" of my Outlook Express e-mail. What comes down --sometimes-- in Outlook Express is not "all" of my e-mail. I know this because I am using Mailwasher Pro and it shows additional mail prior to downloading to Outlook Express. So I click on "Synchronize All" in Outlook Express and the balance of the mail appears. I have only one mail account. So I don'tunderstand. Perhaps someone in this forum can speak to this ... and clarify exactly what "Synchronize All" means.

I am having problems with outlook express 6, it is taking about 1 1/2-2 mins to execute. This seems to be connected to a problem I have with WinMX. Everything was woking fine with my system until one day when I tried to run Winmx i got an error message saying something like "Winmx has failed to execute please reinstall and if this problem persists check your computer for Viruses" on the same day Outlook decided to slow down. I was about to do a hard drive format and clean install anyway so after installing everything again Winmx and Outlook worked perfectly...but only once where after it went back to the same problem.I have since done a second format and it is definately only after i install Winmx that i get the problem. A friend is using OE with XP (Home) - SP3 installed. Also uses AVG.

She normally leaves her computer on continuously, but does periodically reboot it.

Recently, after being on for much of the day where she has used OE a time or two, OE will hang. Clicking on the shortcut or going to the program file and trying to open the application results in not activity. Checking the Task Manager shows that OE is not a running application.

Once in a while, a window appears saying, "An Unknown Error has occured".

The only way to resolve the problem so far is to reboot the computer, which is a bit aggrevating.

I recently started having a very strange problem w/my outlook express (v6). I have 2 identities and it is only affecting one of these identities, the other identity is problem-free.

Here is the problem:

When I send an email, the send/receive box that pops up tells me that i have an error ("Some errors occurred while processing the requested tasks, etc"). However, the area under the "errors" tab is blank. The message which I was trying to send then remains in the outbox. The message is then resent whenever Outlook sends/receives mail. I have to move the item from the Outbox to "Deleted Items" or "Drafts" to stop outlook from constantly resending the message. I cannot move the message to "sent items," if i try to do so it tells me that an error has occurred.

Does anyone have any idea why it would start doing this?

To make matters more confusing, the problem first started only w/messages that had attachments, then every message, and yesterday, 3 or 4 messages actually didn't have this problem ( i send dozens to hundreds of messages a day), but now it's happening to every message again.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Hi everyone, I think I've got a fairly tricky problem here.
I just finished installing Windows 7 Pro (SP1 included) x64 on my laptop. Pretty much the first thing I did was go to check for updates. This was taking forever, and upon looking at the resource monitor, it appears that svchost (you can just which services
it's hosting) was hung at %50, or one CPU core. No HDD activity to speak of, just a process spinning its wheels.
I've tried multiple troubleshooting steps, from running the Update readiness tool (Which didn't find anything wrong), resetting windows update using multiple tools, running an SFC (which said the system was in perfect condition), and of course rebooting
several times in between.
Checking the CBS log file, there are many lines reading "Failed to internally open package. [HRESULT = 0x800F0805 - CBS_E_INVALID_PACKAGE]". Windows Update appears to soldier on past that however, where it apparently reads out its last cached package
(successfully it would seem) then stop dead. When I net stop wuauserv, the log seems to mention TrustedInstaller a few times, then that's about all the interesting information I can gather.
The WindowsUpdate.log file is not terribly helpful either; just before the hang it says "PT: Synchronizing extended update info", then it lists off a ServiceId and Server URL. Nothing after that!
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hey guys.
I'm new, So i'm not sure if this would go under general, or if it's even a windows 8 problem in the first place.
But anyway, here's what's been happening.
I currently have a Windows 8 64-bit Dell Inspiron 15, 3000 Series.
Every time I press the power button when the computer is on, It goes to sleep instead of turning off.
So, I hit (windows key)+x and I click control panel.
I search up "power" and click "Change what the Power buttons do.
I change "sleep" to "shut down" for "pressing the power button".
I then click Save changes.
And it works. At least, for a few days.
I just changed it to shut down yesterday, and today it's already been reset to sleep.
This in't anything really something so big that I can't use the computer anymore, but it's pretty annoying having to reset the settings every few days.

Any help on what is causing this or how to fix this would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

A:"Pressing the Power button" defaulting to sleep

Hmmmm!
If you're using the power button to shut down your computer, that's a HUGE Operational ERROR.
Don't do that!

Use the correct "Shutdown" procedure or you can really screw things up in the PC's registry.
The registry resided in RAM when you're running your PC and is only saved back to the hard drive when the PC does a proper shutdown.
If the PC is crashed after you make setting changes, all those settings will be lost. That may even be the cause of your problem.

I understand, that if you're NOT using the Classic Shell, doing a correct Shutdown can be a
real pain in the *ss! Regardless of the OS I'm using (and right now I AM using Windows 8.1 Pro)
I always use a desktop or Taskbar shortcut to the Windows Shutdown.exe program.

Just create a desktop Shortcut with the following syntax.
%windir%\System32\shutdown.exe /s /t 1

You might want to just copy and paste the blue line into a desktop shortcut, because
every space is important.
I use that same shortcut on Windows 7, 8.1 and 10. My current desktop PC, (homebrew with an SSD)
will shut down in just five seconds when I use my Quick Shutdown shortcut, as shown above.

As to why your settings keep changing, I have only one CLUE, and I mentioned that above.
I have five laptops and none of them ever do that.
So if it can't be fixed, at least now you have a way around it. Eh?

Good Luck, and Happy Holidays!

I emailed myself an essay, and instead of saving the file, i just pressed "open". Now after a couple hours of editing I can't find the file anywhere on my computer. Is this file gone forever, or is there still a chance of finding it?

A:Pressing "open" instead of save on an email attachment

What email service do you use? This is the reason it is wise to save a project every few minutes when you are working on it.... Saves a lot of grief...

Hey everyone,

I am having a problem with a Windows XP machine I have. One time I tried starting it up, and I randomly get this error message:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

Well, I looked it up on Google and found a solution at http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/ht/restorehaldll.htm. So I go ahead and follow that process.

So all the drivers load up and I am asked if I want to Continue (press Enter), Windows Recovery (press R), or Quit (press F3).

I want to get into the Windows Recovery Console, so I press "R". Nothing happens. Then I try pressing Enter. Nothing happens. Then, just for kicks, I try pressing F3. Still nothing.

I have tried multiple keyboards! It's not like the keyboard is off either. The "Num Lock" greenlight is still lit, and if I press a key it still makes "beep" sound.

Any ideas? This is really bugging me!

A:hal.dll Missing, Pressing "R" in Recovery Console Does Nothing?!

Is it a USB keyboard or a PS/2 keyboard (a round plug)?

A:Pressing "Open" instead of Save - where does the file go?

Did you access your email from the web (example: yahoo mail), if so, those attachments will be stored in the internet temporary folder, if you're using Internet Explorer, click tools > internet options > (under temporary internet files) click settings > view files, then you should be taken to a folder, usualy (C:\Documents and Settings\<your user name>\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files) , try looking over there.
Note: The files will still be there unless you have cleared your internet cache.

Outlook 2003:I'm a massive fan of outlooks Search folders, I receive in excess of 400 emails per day, of which approximately 250 need my attention, even if to reply back and give someone an answer.

A problem I find is that I am so busy with my emails, I often need to clean out my inbox. I do this by setting up basic search folders such as "all emails from my team which are in my inbox only" or "any email sent to me which was part of a distribution list in my inbox only" etc...

This is great for filtering my mail and I would like to create a rule as such:

"All mail within my inbox which has been either replied to forwarded by myself".

I can't seem to find any options and I'm hoping an Outlook guru can help

If you don't know the answer, can you try googling it for me to see if you can find anything, loads of heads are better one...

Thanks in advance

Everytime when I want to search for an e-mail in my Outlook 2010, it will load the "Preparing to Install" box and go ahead to install. Any idea how I can fix this, besides uninstalling and installing back Office?

Hello,

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm using Outlook 2003. I'm designing a new Contacts screen, which better suits the needs of my business.

I have been able to figure out how to everything except for this:

How to I design the "date" and "dollar amount" field values to default to blank/empty instead of defaulting to the word "None" in the case of the "date" field and "$0.00" in the case of the "dollar amount" field?

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!

In Windows XP, fully updated, I have several folders full of mp3's and want to see the bit rate and duration. I right click on a column heading and select "Bit rate". I then click on "More..." so I can get to "Duration", and I select that one too.

But all the figures in the "Duration" column appear to be in "hours" and "minutes", so I see "00:04" or "00:03", but what I want is "minutes" and "seconds".

Any thoughts as to how to change this?

I was wondering if there was *some* way to launch Modern apps with the "Microsoft Mouse And Keyboard Center", or whether there's a Modern version of "Microsoft Mouse And Keyboard Center" in the works.

Is there some sort of command or something that can be put into the "Open a program, webpage, or file" field?

If nothing else, is there a program that can be launched that can automatically launch a metro app?

Thanks.

The only method that I have seen is using macros.  E.g. find the minimal, most reliable method of using the Start Screen to do whatever it is that you want to do via the keyboard, then express that sequence by a macro and assign it to an "unused"
function key.

I am getting problem whenever I?m trying to send Email using Microsoft outlook express 2007. I am getting this error message ?Your server has unexpectedly terminated the connection. Error Number: 0x800CCC0F? please help me in resolving this error.

A:Why is this error coming "Error Number: 0x800CCC0F" in Microsoft Outlook Express continuously?

Possible causes for this include server problems, network problems, or a long period of inactivity. I assume that you?ve ruled these out.

The problem may also occur if you have an antivirus e-mail protection utility enabled, which checks the mail as it comes in from your Post Office Protocol (POP) server. To test this, disable the antivirus e-mail protection utility as well as the Windows Firewall.

Another likely cause is that there is a message that is either too large or corrupt in some manner. Logon to your servers Webmail site and delete the offending message there.

Here's the problem:

I want to create a new folder for old email I've already sent.
The problem is new folders (even if they are sub-folders in the "sent" box) do not show the "To" header, they take on the characteristics of the "in" box and show the "From" header.

Anyone know how to create a new folder that responds like the "sent" box?

And one last question while we're at it.
I have recently moved to XP after years of Windows 98 and ME (that's why I want to separate the old email I sent from the new stuff).
In ME the Outlook Express folders were in something called "application data" buried somewhere deep in the operating system, where is it in XP?

A:Outlook Express "sent" box

Right click on any of those (from, subject, received, etc) - then choose columns. There you can have any items you want showing.

As to XP and DBX files....they are hidden. Go to Folder Options->View and click Show all files. Folder Options can be found in Start->Settings or Windows Explorer.

Hi, I just got an Asus R510DP-FH11 laptop (Newegg.com - ASUS R510DP-FH11 AMD A-Series A10-5750M (2.50GHz) 8GB Memory 750GB HDD 15.6" Notebook Windows 8 (64 bit)) and, after installing a bunch of updates, got Windows 8.1.

Last night I started getting a strange issue, and I can't find anything about it on google. When I bring up the start menu, scroll down to the apps menu, and move the mouse at all, it instantly brings me to the desktop where "Asus Installation Wizard" will launch and then immediately tell me that I don't have the supported hardware (even though the Asus Live Update program tells me everything is fine and up to date). I can close it, but it just happens again and again when I visit the apps menu, and ONLY when I visit the apps menu. It doesn't happen on startup or any other time.
Nevermind what the actual program is doing, I can't seem to find out how to stop it from launching. I cannot do anything in the apps menu because of this.
Hopefully someone can shed some light on this.

I've been having a strange issue lately and i'm not too sure where it has come from. Everytime my computer starts up my desktop icons and taskbar doesn't work. I have to hit ctrl + alt + del and then hit cancel in order to unfreeze them.

Everytime i try to launch a website like youtube or any site that has media players, i get a "rundll32 has stopped working" at the website's launch. Then when i try to open the videos on the websites, the "Play" icon is off to the side where it normally isnt, and i cannot play the videos.

Basically my browers have been super glitchy after this. An example is when using google chrome whenever i hit the "previous page" button, it opens another tab instead, and when i click on that tab it closes it. Anytime I try to click another tab it just closes it. This also has a strange effect on my VLC player, none of the buttons work, i have to right click and use the buttons that way. I've never seen anything like it before.

Hello ripabbott and welcome to Seven Forums.

The first thing I'd do is run a full scan with your antivirus/antispyware of choice. Then I'd follow up with a couple of free on-demand scanners that have a good track record of finding things that others miss. One is Malwarebytes and the other is HitmanPro.

It's also possible that you might have some damaged or corrupt system files. Try running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) If any problems are found, run the scan three times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Please post back if this helped or not.

Hope this query is in the right section -tried to use my LDS 1881 England Census CDs last night - but having problems with the Viewer.

I have V4 which up to now has worked perfectly - tried to re-install it
and I keep getting "Failed to extract file "Dll_ini" from binary table"
error message.

BUT no problems on my laptap which has the Viewer installed from the
same CD.

Have had a few problems with computer of late - it was in the workshop
3 weeks ago because of some corrupt Windows files - could that be the
problem?

Grateful for any advice, suggestions as to what to do!

A:Recently "upgraded" to windows 8. Error launching SC2.

Did a bit of "research", is ".NET 3.5 framework" enabled in "Windows Features"? You can check by going to control panel, programs and under program and features you should see "Turn Windows features on or off". Click that and see if the check box is ticked for ".NET 3.5 framework".

I remember this being a huge issue for me when I tried installing various things because I couldn't enable or install .NET 3.5 framework.
