Dell Dimension 8300 broken after SP2 update

Q: Dell Dimension 8300 broken after SP2 update

This Dell Dimension 8300 has 1 GB of RAM and is restored to SP1.
I'm using an add-on 160GB IDE Drive to not mess with the SATA Drive for this upgrade.
When it is upgraded to XP SP2 it becomes unusable.

I've installed and updated and run:
Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005
Ad-Aware SE Personal
a-squared
ewido security suite

and I've done a backup to a USB hardfile with Norton Ghost.
Now I'll install SP2 from the Microsoft shipped CD. Its Logfile is at the end.
After SP2 the network properties on my dialup account under the advanced tab has changed.
It says: Windows cannot display the properties of this connection. .......

I recently Purchased a new Graphics Card for my Dell Dimension 8300, The manufacturer recommends a PSU of atleast 500W. The PSU i currently have in my 8300 is only a 250W.

I purchased a 600W PSU and I assumed that the PSU would fit in my 8300 case considering both were ATX. This was not the case. The AC port on the PSU didn't lineup correctly with my Cutout on the back of the 8300 Case.

So finally to the Question.

Which after market PSU's of at least 500W will fit in the Dell Dimension 8300 Case?

Thanks in advance for any help.

A:Aftermarket PSU for Dell Dimension 8300

Buy a Dremel or similar tool and cut the hole - better to spend your money on something useful and still use the PSU you are stuck with.

However, if you can return it, simply LOOK at the pictures of psu's at NCIX or similar place and you'll see whee they place the AC input.

Hi,

I have an old 2002 Dell DIMENSION 8300, Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4CPU 2.60GHz 2.59GHz, & 1.00GB of RAM. It's an older computer that I don't use as much anymore but I've been noticing that randomly it will lock up with no warning signs and will not let you do anything else. Once it's locked up, if you press any of the keys on the keyboard, it will make a beep or buzz sound. Alt, Ctrl, Delete will not work either so you basically have to force the shut down which I don't like to do. I believe I read somewhere that some of these Dell models were having this issue. Does any of this sound familiar with these models and is there any fix for it? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

A:Dell 8300 Dimension Locking Up

There should be beep codes for dell computers if i remember correctly.Ive only had to refer to it one time on a dell vostro desktop and it turned out that one of the ram sticks were bad.The fact that its now 10 years old it could be any number of things causing it.It depends on what is wrong and if it is fixable. You might want to have it looked at to see why its beeping and then go from there.

A:dell dimension 8300 will not boot up

Be sure the on/off switch is good and connected to the board. If the power supply is good and you're sure about that, the board is probably dead.

Hi,
Before I start I know you will tell me I should have left this to the pro's, but I thought I would give it try.

My PC kept on crashing during game play. On one of the forums it was suggested the video may be at fault. But this was happening with old games also. So I opened the machine and noticed that the fan on the video card was jam packed with muck. I took the video card out and cleaned it with cotton buds.

When I turn the machine back on, it works fine for about 30minutes. Then there is an awful buring smell, then it cuts out. The power light is blinking orange and that is it. Does anyone know if there is an obvious fix for this or is it clearly goosed?

Thanks again for your help?

Cheers

Chris

Hello,

My Dell Dimension 8300 has 1 GB of RAM, running Win XP Pro, Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz with the factory installed power supply.

I replaced the video card that came with it with a Radeon 9550 (AGP 8x) and things worked fine for several months. Unfortunately now the screen will randomly start displaying 1inch long rectangular boxes composed of vertical lines throughout the screen. It doesn't seem to matter if I am on a web page full of text or if I am on a web page with active content such as Flash. If I give it enough time it almost always starts happening. When I was playing World of Warcraft it got to the point where I couldn't get past the login screen because I couldn't see. I was thinking that it was possibly an overheating problem, but after doing some Googling am wondering if it is the Dell PS. My first video card (a 128mb Radeon of some sort) also did this after 1 1/2 years of use.

I would like to get your opinions on this because I am thinking on trying a new PS from here.

A:Radeon 9550 in a Dell Dimension 8300

Sometimes you need to try "known good parts" that you may have available to you. For instance a more powerful PSU, or a different GFX processor. I'm sure this has occurred to you. You could check with AMD/ATI for updated drivers, although I think one of the components is at fault. I paid $99 for a 9550 and used it for about a week. (I paid too much). Even though it's a minimal card it should at least keep working. I would go with your hunch on the psu but this did happen with your original card also, so...borrow some parts and eliminate the bad one. Good Luck.

I just upgraded to a brand new Dell 8300 machine with XP Home, everything seems to be working except for the printer connection. I have an HP882C and a Canon bubblejet, both worked with my old Dell and XP Home, but when I print I get only the text at the top of the page and then the job stalls and fails in the print que. It also takes a long time (2-3 minutes) for the document to clear out of the que when I cancel/delete it. This is happening in Word, Excel, NotePad, etc. Have tried uninstalling both printers, deleting and reinstalling the drivers, using XP autosearch as well as the drivers off of the printer disks to install, changed the USB cable, run all the Troubleshooting schemes and still getting the same result with both printers. Have checked the printer settings and they are the same as on my old machine (spool print, start immediately, etc.) and have tried other settings to no avail. Anyone have any ideas? Any help is much appreciated before I get on the phone with Dell and/or have to ship this thing back!

The 8300 should take most of the socket 478 CPUs, max 3.4GHz Northwood or Prescott processor.Note: The early 8300 systems are limited to 2.8 GHz, but the ones built in late 2003, can take the faster processors, with a BIOS upgrade to version A07.A Socket 478, P4 3.4GHz processor will only work, if your 8300 was built after December 2003 and with a BIOS upgrade to version A07, if it was built prior to that, the 3.4GHz processor would clock down to 2.8GHz.Better to buy a Northwood, as the Prescott processor runs hotter.Bev.

I have an old Dell Dimension 8300 in which the original Radeon 9800Pro had burned out. I purchased a BFG Geforce 7800GS OC and a BFG 450watt PSU with which to run it. I have installed the new PSU and it works fine but when I connect the 7800GS, the computer starts to boot but I get no picture to the monitor. I suspect that it is an incompatibility issue between the PC and the graphics card, does anyone have any suggestions as to how it can be resolved, BFG tech support have been quite unhelpful, they tried to convince me that I needed to disable the embedded display adapter in the device manager, but it only shows whatever is connected through the AGP slot, no embedded display adapter is present.

A:Dell Dimension 8300 with Geforce 7800GS OC

These old Dells were very picky about what hardware is installed in them. Does this 8300 have a VGA connector on the motherboard near the Mouse/Keyboard connectors? If so, it does have on-board video. If the old 9800 was AGP, the motherboard video settings should be ok. Check to make sure that you have connected the power supply to the 7800 if it has a power connector on it... Then try another video card. The BFG might be defective

So yeah. I thought it'd be a good idea to upgrade my desktop from XP to Win7. I installed Professional 32-bit on it since I got a free copy from MSDN because of my college. The install went smoothly and everything was fine. The only problem I had was that it had no sound and the sound drivers wouldn't install because they were for only Windows XP. However, I was perfectly fine with that since I don't really need sound for it. I'm using it more for hosting vent/teamspeak 2 servers for friends.

The problem I had this morning when I turned it back on was that it wasn't recognizing the ethernet connection anymore. And I don't know why. Win7 installed Intel PRO/100 VE by default for my network adapter and it's still there but it's not recognizing any internet connection. I read somewhere that your computer won't recognize a lot of your hardware if the chipset driver isn't installed. I didn't know what chipset I had so I tried using Intel's Chipset Identification utility thing which I transferred over from my laptop by means of an external but it said that it couldn't even recognize what chipset was on my Dell 8300. I tried installing the only chipset driver for the 8300 from dell's site but it's not supported by any OS after XP. So I'm at a loss on what to do. Dell true to form has made the cmos non-upgradeable for use with WIN8. So, with regrets, I need to know what motherboard, cpu and sound cards, memory, etc, I will need in order to upgrade this elephant.

Then of course, I need to know if my graphics card, NVIDIA GeForce 6200, power supply 250W, etc are sufficient. The power supply is welded to the frame of the box, so will be a pill to change out. I also need suggestions on which Sound card, since there isn't one now. It too is part of the motherboard.

I guess I should also ask if this upgrade is even possible. Is WIN 8 backward compatible with xp software? I hope so, since it would be cheaper than purchasing a new machine and software.

Any and all advice will be appreciated.

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 with the original ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card. Recently we have been experiencing problems with the display - a number of vertical lines/bars, about one inch wide appear on the screen. I've attempted to troubleshoot the problem by trying a different monitor on this PC (with the same problem resulting), and have also tried the monitor from the problem PC on a different Dell and it works fine - so I believe I have ruled out the monitor as the problem.

Is there a way to run a diagnostics on the video card to see what the problem might be? And if so, how do I locate and read the results from the diagnostics, given my display problem which makes it very difficult to read the display?

I was going to jump in and buy a PNY GeForce FX 5200 256MB card as a replacement, but thought I should verify the problem is the card before purchasing the card from Amazon, for about $30 (after rebate). Any thoughts on this card as a replacement / upgrade for this PC?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I'm thinking of upgrading my power supply. I'm pretty sure my PC does not have a propietary power supply (bought early 2004), but the back side covers the on-off button found in many power supplies, such as this one:

Picture of backside. Notice it covers most of the power supply.

I know I have few options. 1) Upgrade to the PC Power and Cooling one, shown here:

2) Open a hole in the back of my case to be able to fit other power supplies.

I had problems with my Dell Dimension 8300 and reinstalled Windows XP Multimedia Center CD that came with the computer. That;s when my troubles began. The installation went smoothly but afterwards I had trouble staying on the internet. I was hooked up to the internet via a broadband router and a Motorola pancake modem (the router was used to get internet to another computer). Now when I access Internet Exploere (6) I get an error message and when I send or don't send the message the internet page closes. I went to device manager and all entries look normal. ModVer: 6.02900.2180 Offset: 00071463

I also tried hooking up to the modem directly but the results were the same. I hope someone can help.

Hello.

I purchased an upgrade copy of Windows Vista as I already have an OEM version of Windows XP that came with my computer when I bought it. I did an upgrade of XP and had many problems with incompatible programs so I decided to do a fresh install.

Unfortunately I erased my hard disk first and although Vista is working perfectly, I can’t activate it because it didn’t detect an activated copy of XP during the install. As directed by Microsoft, I now have to reinstall XP Home before doing another upgrade.

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 computer with a 120GB SATA hard drive (Dell Service Tag 66LY71S). When I boot from the Windows XP CD that came with my computer, Windows setup briefly says “Setup is inspecting your hardware” then the screen goes blank and the hard disk light comes on and stays on although it is not making any noise. It doesn’t even get to the initial blue Windows Setup screen. I’ve left it sitting there for 20 minutes or more and nothing happens. The 4 diagnostic lights on the back of the PC are all green indicating “The computer is in a normal operating condition after POST”. I have to switch off the computer at this point. I tried this with two other XP Home CDs that I know work OK on other computers and they all do the same thing.

If I go into the BIOS to the “Drive Configuration” section and change the value of the “SATA Primary Drive” setting from AUTO to OFF (the only other option) and save the changes, the XP setup program will run withou... Read more

A:XP Home reinstall hangs on Dell Dimension 8300

To load XP on that Dell, you need the SATA drivers on a floppy disc for use at the "Press F6 . . . " prompt . . very early in the setup ( just after the "Press any key to Boot from CD" Prompt.)

Go back into BIOS and set SATA back to On and retry.

Vista has the SATA drivers and so did not require this extra step.

Hi all -- I have a Dell Dimension 8300:

Intel Pentium 4
CPU 2.6 GHz
2.00 GB of RAM
80GB Harddrive

Currently I have an nVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card but I want to upgrade. I do a fair amount of gaming, not a great deal but I do enjoy a higher performance, I also recently got BioShock which I was looking forward too but requires a higher performance card.

Does anyone have any idea on what cards would be compatible with my system and any recommendations on what would be the best fit. I do tend to prefer nVidia cards but am in no way constrained by that. I'm happy to spend a little more for that added performance, I would rather get something better now and not have to upgrade again for a while.

Thanks in advance!

Hi. I'm looking to upgrade the video card for my aging Dell Dimension 8300 for $150 or less (preferably $50-100). I have a new computer on the way which I'll use for the heavy lifting, but I'd like to be able to use this one as well - for 3D animation/video editing and light duty gaming for my kids.

I have a Dell Dimension 8300,
Intel Pentium 4, 2.6 GHz
3GB DDR RAM
Socket 478 mPGA
Chipset i875P
Graphic interface supports AGP version 3.0; 8x

I can't open my computer right now to get at the power supply, but the system came with a 305 Watt supply with 1.5 V (as opposed to .8) for the video card.

I currently have an nVidia GeForce5200 FX with 128 MB RAM, and would like to upgrade if it's economical enough and would boost the performance of this machine as it gimps along.

Can the Dell 8300 handle a 512 MB card?
(I've heard it both ways; Dell sales support said yes but I wasn't sure how tech savvy the person was).

I've seen recommendations for the nVidia GeForce 7600, 8600GT and 7950GT.

I don't know much about video cards, so any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Mosk

A:Video card upgrade for Dell Dimension 8300

An added note - a Dell Tech representative just told me that he doesn't think the Dell 8300 motherboard will let you benefit from anything above a 128MB video card, because the motherboard only allocates 128 MB for Shared Memory.

Not sure if that's true. I've certainly seen plenty of 256MB cards recommended as upgrades for the Dimension 8300 (and the first sales person there was suggesting a 512MB card)

Okay, so I still have my old 8300 (along with my newer computers), I'm looking to upgrade my 512 MB of memory to the max 4GB. I also have a GeForce FX 5200 128MB Video Card (AGP) that I would like to update. Now I know this computer is old but I'm looking for some suggestions on what I can do with this computer concerning upgrades on the memory card & video card. I've been researching parts on Newegg but want to make sure I know what's compatible. Some folks say 4GB is to much memory and also the video card cannot be above 256 MB for this computer? This computer is used by my daughter for basic internet, facebook, and no serious gaming. The computer runs Windows XP SP3, memory speed 400 MHz, and help would be greatly appreciated :wave :

A:Upgrading Dell Dimension 8300 Video/Memory Card

4GB is too much if you plan on sticking with Windows XP... 2GB is plenty for the older OS (that's still four times the memory!) -especially since the computer is considered general purpose... There are a lot of video cards out there for low end usage, and if you really want to upgrade from the older card check out some deals on the latest AGP cards. The interface is aged now so you wont have to spend much for what you're looking for, and honestly if you just need the computer for internet i'd keep the 5200. Video memory doesn't matter but you don't need anything more than 256MB...

Audio card for Dell Dimension 8300 compatible with Windows 7?

Hello everybody! Fresh member, and glad to be here !

Lemme start with a problem I am hoping somebody here can help me with :

Last weekend I upgraded my Dell Dimension 8300 to Windows 7. After some work, finally I am left with just one compatibility issue : it came with the SoundMax Integrated Digital Audio card, and I am unable to find drivers for it that work with Windows 7.

I searched online, and found a few others have hit this problem and even suggested solutions, which didn't work for me. I am guessing I will simply have to bite the bullet and buy a replacement audio card?

Problem is, how do I make sure that an Audio card is compatible with both the hardware (Dell Dimension 8300) and the software (Win 7)?

I am not a gamer, so am not looking for the best-of-the-best; just something that allow me to play songs and video.

And yes, the 'integrated' in the existing card's name - does it mean I cannot remove it? or it is integrated with something else (video card)? Will that be an issue?

thanks!
- radhak

A:Video card for Dell Dimension 8300 compatible with Windows 7?

Welcome!

you can try DriverEasy and see if it finds any working drivers(?) it was recommended to me also here on TechSpot so now I pass it on for me it works really good, the only down side with the free version of the program is that the download is really slow (limited to 8-20kbps).

Do you mean you want to remove the integrated wound card? -basically everything that is "integrated" can be disabled (in the bios) but not removed. If you get an other sound card and install it then most likely the bios will automatically disable the integrated sound card.

I have gathered that some manufacturers pre-overclock it for you out of the factory... is that the difference between the different brands? How important is this? I think for me, it's best to get the cheapest one... yes?

The BFG 7600 GT is 142.99 USD while the eVGA is only 109.99 without s&h from newegg. That's a big difference to me.

Hmm... I just found this but newegg is selling the eVGA 7600 GS for 89.99 with a $20 rebate so it's 70 bucks plus 5 dollars for s&h. What is the difference between the 7600 GT and GS? They're both listed as good value cards:
- http://internetgames.about.com/cs/toppicks/tp/tpvideocards.htm

thanks again!

edit: actually the $20 rebate is good for any evga 7600 GS and GT, 7800 GS, 8800 GTX and GTS bought on newegg... but only for very specific models that I couldn't find. It is sooo confusing how many different makes of one 7600 GT / GS model there are ... Read more

I am at a loss here, and maybe someone has an idea or two or many.
I have a dazzle dvc usb device. I had it hooked up to my computer which is only a few months old. I had a sudden hard drive failure, so I got my new hard drive and reloaded everything, but alas I can't get the dazzle dvc usb to work this time around. I don't know why. I even formatted the drive and did a clean install of xp in case I added something not there before that it didn't like. It was no help. Of course there is the flip side that I am missing something that it liked having before.

The device shows in device manager under sound & video controllers. I am not showing any conflicts. When I use the movie star software to detect the device I get two orange lights and it doesn't detect it. If I use the latest version of the software it thinks its a parallel port device and the usb is in conflict. On my former hard drive I had the original software and xp driver and it worked like a charm. I didn't use the latest level.

My only clue to what may be happening is in the dazzle diagnostics, which I found out existed while trying to solve the problem. It is giving me some error messages, but I don't know what it means.

Trying to replace my pc case at the moment. The motherboard which came with the 8300 has an all in one strip connector for connecting two front usb sockets, 1 headphone socket, power switch, hd light and power light. The new case I have bought has individual connectors for these. Where can I find a manual for this board so I can identify which pins go with which connectors?

I have a 2004 Dell Dimension 8300 w/ XP Pro (rest of specs in profile) and have gradually been losing my USB ports. They will function properly for about 1 minute at startup, then I lose them. I have 6 in the rear of the box, and two on the front. One port on the front still works consistently. Here's what I HAVE done so far:

-installed chipset drivers from Dell support website
(this did nothing as it was a 3 year old file/driver)

-installed corresponding chipset drivers from Intel website (Intel 875P chipset)
(this also did nothing)

-Device manager shows all ports functioning, however, it does say I have 5 root hubs, and looks awfully complicated. All of them are functioning, though.
(I can provide a screenschot if necessary)

That's about all I can do, as was directed by Dell's support journals. Its so weird that only one is working. Could this be my motherboard dying? Are the drivers from Intel not truly updating? I cannot see an update recently that would've changed the USB's operation. Their deterioration has been gradual. Sometimes one will work, others will not.

What next?

A:USB Ports AWOL on Dimension 8300

USB can become "flaky." I would suggest going into Device Manager and uninstalling everything listed under Universal Serial Bus, then reboot. Windows will automatically run the "Found New Hardware" wizard and reinstall the USB drivers. That may solve the problem.

This is a follow-up question to my earlier one, about replacing the current CD-ROM drive with an updated one that runs CD-ROMs faster and also runs DVDs. It's been suggested that I add an external drive instead (my computer is more than 5 years old). Can anyone suggest a good external drive and a place where I can get it online? Also, any suggestions on how to do this? I'm hoping there won't be as much of a need to worry about getting shocked by the system if I install an external drive...but if there is, I could use some really down-to-earth directions. I've not done this before.

Thanks!

Your computer has 6 USB 2.0 ports,so you want to get a
USB 2.0 drive.
Basically, you just plug in the power adapter to the drive
and plug in the USB cable to the drive and the computer.
Turn it on and it's ready.
What to get is a personal preference.
The are many different styles.

I have this Dimension 8300 I am working on, I bought a Radeon 9550 and installed it.

1. I updated the chipset
2. Downloaded the latest driver for it on the ATI website.
3. Maxed Virtual Memory
4. In BIOS Iincreased AGP memory from 128 to 256.

With that being said I am still getting very choppy movement out of this card. Even worse, after every reboot, I lose graphics card settings. This is a first for me.

Any help is appreciated!

I've been working on a Dell Dimension that refuses to update to anything above Windows Xp Sp1 without it causing a continuous BSOD on boot up. I ran the Dell conflict checking software, and it said that there were 6 possible culprits for conflicting drivers. 2 were for Mcafee's, which I promptly uninstalled and removed, and 4 were for the Burner or Burning software, which I also removed, or disabled (renamed) and it still BSOD's on boot up. I thought maybe the problem was specific to SP2, so I went straight to SP3, yet it still does it. I used the Microsoft Offline Crash report, but all that says is that it's possibly a driver, software, or hardware conflict.

Has anyone else ran into this problem, and found a solution? The BSOD message starts with 0x0000008E I believe.

hi tech guy forums,

I have a standard Dell Dimension 3000 pc at home that i regularly use for gaming. At the moment I have a Nvidia GeForce FX 5500 graphics card installed to help with gaming. I am interested in purchasing a new graphics card and was wondering if, in particular if a Nvidia 9600 GT graphics card will fit and comply with my computer. I am also upgrading my RAM form 512MB to 2GB if this helps in any way. If you have any other recommended graphics cards that may work with my pc please let me know.

Thanks

A:Dell Dimension 3000 graphics card update

Your Dimension 3000 only has PCI slots for a graphics card, correct?

(according to dell, and my own experience, likely yes)

Without a PCI-Express or AGP card slot, gaming can not improve very much.

I also have a Dimension 3000 : P4 2.8 GHz - 768mb RAM, with a Geforce 6200 [256mb ddr2] PCI card. When it comes to gaming, it is outperformed by my old 1.4 GHz Athlon XP - 512 RAM - Geforce Ti-4200 [64mb], simply because the older computer has an AGP video slot ... the PCI bus is a VERY limiting factor.

I like to hear forum members opinion.
Just recently fixed the issue with Dell Dimension 4300, machine didn't power up when power switch pressed. I replaced original dead 250W PSU with new 430W dual fan and now comp is running. This PC is:
Intel 845 1.6 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 4 DMA channels and SDRAM PC133 512 mb of memory.
I also upgraded USB to 2.0, nice 128MB video card and some other goodies.
Now, I got another stock Dell Dimension 8100 without papers, but I check and this particular one has:
Intel 850 1.4 GHz internally and 400 MHz externally. 8 DMA channels and 384 mb RDRAM of memory. Nothing was done to this machine, and it also have original working 250W PSU.
What better to do? Keep the Dimension 4300 or remove goodies that compatible with 8100 motherboard, including fabricating in, new, dual fan PSU and excluding memory, I assume SDRAM and RDRAM not compatible and transfer to Dimension 8100?
Is 8100 machine more advanced then 4300? I know they both pretty old and outdated. I personally bough 4300 for my dad in 2001. Is 8100 was produced later? I see that CPU is Intel 850 vs 845..
Guys, opinion welcome.
Thanks,
Alex

I used Acronis Easy Migrate 7 to Image the IDE hard drive to the SATA hard drive and installed it into the 8400. Anyone having clock issues with a DELL XPS 8300?  Seems like everyday my clock is off by hours. Just now it was an hour ahead, and the other day it was several hours ahead. This computer isn't hardly a month old. Already got network issues and clock issues.

A:Dell XPS 8300

Your network issues may be related to the time issues (when out of sync, many Windows computers will deny a connection).
Are you running this in a Domain or standalone?  Have you configured (or do you have software installed that might be configuring) a different time server?
If not, then try clearing your NVRAM/CMOS using the jumpers on the motherboard.  If you still are having problems, then replace the CMOS battery (you can call Support for it, but it costs just a few bucks at Walmart or similar).  If it still won't keep time, then your motherboard will need to be replaced.

I have looked at YouTube tutorials where people are struggling to release the cmos 3 V battery..
I have tried lifting the piece on top of the battery up. I then tried pushing the part of the clasp, outside, and not over the battery, down. It is not the clasp in the manual or at least it does not show what to do. All it says is to push the retainer away from the battery and it pops out. I did this but as it is the positive piece of continuity I did not want to push too hard.
I am leery of prying against the board also. Is there a trick, method or  "way to do this"?

By the way look at the screw fittings and size of what fits in you dell, i have a dell, nothing is standard, you cant upgrade the mobo, cpu (without a special heat sink and fan) and some other components because they have heavily customised hardware, you may have to buy from dells sales team. "I am looking at getting a Silencer 410 Dell2 PSU, as it is advertised as being specifically compatible for the Dell 8300"...

This should work fine. It is easy to replace the power supply, just be careful to identify all the connections from the old power supply to the motherboard and to the hard drives and CDROMs, so you can attach the new supply properly. There is usually 4 screws or clips that hold the power supply in place. If you are at all mechanically inclined, you will figure it out

Hey guys,

This is my first time posting here. Anyway, I bought a Dell XPS 8300 and I love it. I've had it for about 2 years almost now. I got it because it just seemed like the right choice at the moment and I heard really good reviews about it. Well, as of right now, the GPU is not meeting my needs. I started playing Battlefield 3 and I get about 15 FPS (with lowest settings). I want something that can allow me to run it at high settings with much better FPS. Below are the cards that I would like to get, but dont know if they will work. If someone who  has the 8300 can confirm these work, I would really appreciate it. Btw, I will not be getting another PSU. It is not in my budget to buy a new card and another PSU.
AMD Radeon 6950
GTX 560
AMD 7770
AMD 7850
AMD 6870
GTX 760
I know that these cards will run it a little dangerously close since they will be on a 460W, but I want to know which ones will work best. I really want the 6950, 760 and 7850. If anybody knows if these will work, I would really appreciate it.

Thank You.

welcome to Techspot
it appears that your dimension 8300 has an agp x8 interface see here :
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/dim8300/sm/specs.htm

the documentation on your system says that the 8300 came with either a 250w or a 305w psu.
(you will have to check the psu tag to find out which yours is) the power requirements for the 7600 GS is as follows from the manufacturer:
A minimum 350W system power supply (with 12V current rating of 20A or more)

so it looks as if you would need a new power supply for your 7600 GS upgrade.

Hi All,

I dont know if this the best place to post this, but this is my first time EVER posting to a forum
PLEASE HELP!

I came into the office today to find my computer would not turn on.
Initially I would press the on button and nothing would happen, the monitor would read no signal....the on buttonis white and there is a green light in the bag.

After a few hard re-starts, I did see "resuming windows" and then nothing....

After a few more hard restart, I tried to access the boot menu pressing f7 I got nothing....

Few more hard restarts I finally got to the boot menu (did not press f7, boot menu came up automatically with error message that the computer did not shut down correctly)

With a few more hard restarts between I was able to access the boot menu and try all the options on the boot menu: Safe mode, safe mode with Networking, safe mode with command prompt, start windows normally........it got as far as "resuming window and then..... nothing!

Few more hard restarts....was not able to access f2 or f12....

Finally found the Drivers and Utilities CD...then was able to hit and access the f12 option.....arrived at the ePSA Pre-boot System Assessment....all devices check out: System, cables, OS Boot Path, CD ROM Drive 0, Video Card, CPU Fan, Rear Fan, Processor, Memory.....all devices but my hard drive.
I have run a diagnostics test.....im still at 99% after a 1.5 hours....

what now?

A:Dell XPS 8300 wont Boot

The diagnostic test is testing what? The hard drive? Or basic system tests?

Are all the cables on the back of the computer properly plugged in? The monitor cable? Is it inserted fully and are the two screws finger tight?

Are you comfortable with opening the computer and taking a look inside? I wouldn't recommend it if you have no prior experience with it. You could potentially give yourself more problems.

If you are comfortable going inside, I would just check to make sure that all cables are properly seated. You could even try unplugging all cables and plugging them back in to make sure.

Hi there,

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 desktop running XP sp3 and the audio system is a Dell MMS 5650 - since a couple of days ago I am getting no sound out of any speakers. Have checked the obvious, losse cables. volume via Sounds and Devices (Control Panel) etc.

A:Dell 8300 Desktop burn?

Hi fro,

not burn, but the case fans won't shut off. Dell uses proprietary motherboards and power supplies you would have to change the motherboard too, or get an adapter. I googled it and found a couple of places that make them.

I got a computer in 2003 from dell called DELL dimension 8300 with has the NVIDIA GeForce4 MX video card.

After I reformatted XP to put windows 7 on it, now when I watch movies or video, I can see these randomly appearing green dots on the screen all the time. Makes the video almost unwatchable sometimes and very annoying.

Does anyone know why this is? Is is perhaps a driver issue or is the video card dying or overclocked? How do I fix it in each of these scenarios? Any tips or links to the appropriate driver..etc would be much appreciated!! Thanks.

I have a dell 8300. Dell told me I could upgrade my 1gig memory to no more than 4 gig. I bought 4 - 1gig cards and installed them. When I look at the system information, it says 3.25 gig. I thought there was something wrong with one of the memory cards but I tried it without and it goes to 3. gig then I tried along with the 3 1 gig cards I put in an old 512 and it went back up to 3.25. I read that since I"m using winxp home edition it won't read more than 3 gig. Is that true and is there anything I can do to fix it. (I don't want to upgrade to pro). My other question is. is the 4 gig in there wasted (should I remove 1 gig and only have 3 gig) or is the the other .75 gig being used at all.

Thank you in advance

Yes it will not see all the 4 gig......I personally would just leave the 4 gig in

Hey folks, new member here. I have a Dell XPS8300 and I'am looking to get a new graphics card since Diablo 3 is coming out soon. I'm not tech savvy, so any help would be greatly appreciated. Here is the specs on the desktop.

Processor --- 2nd Generation Intel® Core? i7-2600 processor (3.4GHz with 8MB Cache)

Memory3 --- 8GB4 DDR3 SDRAM at 1333MHz

Hard Drive --- 1TB - 7200RPM, SATA 3.0Gb/s, 16MB Cache

Video Card --- AMD Radeon? HD 6450 1GB DDR3

I'm basically looking for a card under $200 that will give me the max performance allowed on Battlefield 3 and D3. I read some other sites that you need to know the desktops watt max and how many slots it has before a graphics card is even considered. What would you guys recommend I get? Any Suggestions as to the cards?

Thank you for the help gents.

Hi, I bought and received a new XPS 8300 last week... Intel Core i5-2300, 8 GB RAM... having big problems right off the bat.
The computer will periodically completely freeze, rendering the mouse + keyboard useless, and the only way to get out of it is to do a hard reboot (hold power button for 5 seconds to turn off, then turn on again). There's no blue screen of death, rather the image on the monitor just freezes. This is happening upwards of once every hour, which is completely unacceptable. There's no apparent trigger, it occurs while I'm on the Internet, while I'm in MS office, while the screen saver is on, etc.
At first I thought it could be a driver problem with the monitor (my own Samsung, not from Dell), but I installed the correct drivers and it still occurs. Then I figured it could be malware (even on a new computer), but a thorough scan revealed nothing. I'm now concerned that this is a CPU heat issue, and have taken to temporarily putting a full-size fan in front of the tower case, which is already well-ventilated. This has apparently slowed down the frequently of the hangs, but they still arise. I have already installed a few programs and transferred a few files, and really don't want to go through the hassle of returning the case to Dell for weeks on end.
Any thoughts? Anyone having similar problems? This is maddening.

A:New Dell XPS 8300 constantly Locking up.. help

Good news: The new video card works wonderfully.
Problem: Hard freeze of system. To see if you are hard frozen, press [CAPSLOCK] -- if your keyboard led doesn't change, then you are hard frozen.
Overview of steps taken:
* Full system reinstall twice
* All drivers reinstalled twice (from DELL and from Manufacturer)
* Complete change of memory (and back)
* Testing of Power Supply voltage
* Full memory test w/ diagnostic using: Dell Diagnostic, Windows Diagnostic, Linux Memory Tester (HIREN)
* Thorough system check with Dell Diagnostics.
* CPU-Z checking to ensure that chipset was not in recall list.
After all of those freezing was still occuring. So with the system back in the original state (via Dell Restore) I installed a 9800GT video card and the freezing ceased. I checked the ATI again, freezing, older drivers still froze. Dell shipped out a GTX560ti and the system is working flawlessly.
There isn't a widespread report of all ATI cards in i7 systems not functioning so I don't think it's just a driver issue, I believe the issue is related to this chipset not supporting the communications with the GPU through the ATI drivers.
Solution: Replaced video card with Dell supplied GTX560 ti
----
Note: To the few NVIDIA users with freezing, please follow all troubleshooting procedures in hand with Dell Support. Likely places to start: Drivers, Ram, Video Card, Storage.
Hope everyone else has good luck with theirs!

Hey guys,

Having some problems with my computer.  Wondering if I could get some help?

Got the spec link above.

Problems:

-Computer does not shut down properly.  It reaches the shutting down screen but remains there until I have to force it to shut down.

-AMD Display Adapter ATI Radeon Graphics Card.  My computer lists that there is a problem here.  "This solution could not be downloaded.  The problem report for this solution has been deleted or changed on this computer and is no longer available."

I tried getting the latest version of the AMD but while it is uploading and installing it isn't able to complete the install.  Similar to the shutting down problem where it stops before completion.

-Several programs I run such as iTunes, Burn Aware oftentimes freeze up and when I check task manager it is listed as not responding so I force a shut down and restart again.

-My DVD drive is unable to read CD's and DVD's.  The drive is recognized but not the CD and DVD itself.  It is able to burn CD's and DVD's however.

Sorry to list so much problems like this.  If I could get any advice/suggestions, it would be very helpful.  Thanks!

A:Dell XPS 8300 Multiple Problems

My first suggestion is to uninstall anything developed by IObit:  Advanced System Care, Smart Defragger, Surfing Protection.

Then...run the chkdsk /r command on the Windows partition.

Then...run the sfc /scannow command.

Then...see how the system is running .

I myself would also uninstall Comodo Internet Security...you can use the Windows Firewall and your data indicates that you have Avast installed as your AV.  There should be only real-time AV program installed on a system...having more makes Windows a bit sick.

If Internet Download Manager is pirated or obtained from one of the various websites which are likely to result in malware/adware being installed on the user's system...I suggest that you tell us since we don't deal with malware situations in this forum and such need address in the proper forum.

We've got a Dell XPS 8300 desktop with intel i7-2600k cpu, Nvidia gtx 560ti graphics.   The computer crashes repeatedly.  We've had the computer a few years but it only started doing this a few months ago.  At any rate, I've read on this forum that there's a bug in the Nvidia gtx 560ti.  One user received a replacement from Dell that solved the problem.   If this is the case how can I get one from Dell?  Any suggestions welcome.

A:Dell XPS 8300 crashes repeatedly

If you had the PC for a few years and it only now started to crash, I don't think you can conclude it's due to some "bug in the Nvidia gtx 560ti". And if you're out of warranty, Dell is unlikely to replace the card, anyway.
Lots of reasons for random crashes:

Have you run full diagnostics from the F12 menu available when you boot?
Any error messages in Windows Event Viewer at time of crash? (What version of Windows)?
Any signs of overheating?
Have you scanned thoroughly for malware?
Have you installed any new software recently?
Are all your drivers up-to-date (chipsets, video card, etc)?
Do you have the latest version of BIOS?
How much free space is available on the hard drive
When was hard drive last defragmented (assuming is a hard drive, not a solid state drive)?
Try re-seating RAM modules and PCI cards in their slots
Make sure all internal cable connections are secure
Use canned air to blow out dust bunnies and make sure all fans are clean and work
etc

I have a Dell 8300 with an audio problem. Using the Dell Creative Diagnostic Test results in a "mixer setting driver" failure. When the fix button is actuated the failure is fixed. However, when I test again the failure returns. I can maintain sound only by clicking the "wave/ mp3" volume control in the "playback control" every time the audio disappears. My sound card is a Creative SB Live Series.

A:Dell 8300 Audio Problem

Have you just installed the card or was it working fine until recently?

If it worked before, try installing the card in another PC and see how it behaves. If the problem follows the card, it is likely you need to replace it.
If it works fine, then you can try reinstalling it in your Dell but use a different card slot if possible.

Another possibility is the driver software, have you only used the CD drivers or have you managed to download the latest from Creative's site?

Weird multi system BSOD

Have a bunch of Dell Dimensioin 8300's we purchased (Win 7 Enterprise, 64 bit, Purchases 1/2011). Been putting the same image on them for past year. All of a sudden that image is throwing some BSOD. Throws them pretty quick, within 30 minutes.

Ok, no big deal, something slightly different in the hardware in one of the batches from Dell that the image doesnt like. So I reformat a drive, install a clean new copy of Windows 7 Enterprise 64 bit. After installing lal the drivers for that specific Dell the BSOD comes back. So I install a new clean copy of Windows 7 64 bit and begin installing drivers one by one with break in between waiting for BSOD.

Let it sit for few hours after clean install. No BSOD.

I install each missing device manager missing component, and let it sit for a few hours.
Chipset controller 1: No BSOD after 3 hours
Chipset controller 2: No BSOD after 3 hours
Broadcom Net xTreme NIC contorller: No inital BSOD but get a BSOD after using the newly installed NIC to access the internet.

This is the recommended NIC driver for this machine from Dell.

Can someone look at this dmp file and see if it is really NIC-related?

And I wouldnt mind learnign to interpret a BSOD myself if there are some simple tutorials.

Many thanks!

A:Multisytem Dell 8300 BSODs

Do you only have one crashdump? I'm not sure I can use this crashdump as it's a system service exception and therefore any related thread other than the service thread will not be retained in the minidump. In short, it just means the minidump doesn't have enough info to make a firm suspicion on anything.

I do have a couple of clues though. The running process at the time was TrustedInstall which is pretty selfexplanatory. McAfee filter drivers were also present in the running thread's stack, of which they are dated woefully back in January 2011. Not sure if you can update them. They may not be responsible, however. Again, no solid evidence.

I checked the syslog, and I found what appears to be isolated error events that occurred only once, one (Windows update) 2 minutes prior to the events related to the crash (which occur during startup) and one that's 6 minutes behind. They are as followed:

I was installing drivers and updates after receiving and wiping my new XPS system from Dell and stepped away from the PC for a couple of hours while things downloaded. I have a Dell XPS 8300 from 2011, with an i7 2600, 8GB of ram, 2 1TB HDD in RAID 0 and an OEM GTX 560Ti. A month ago this video card apparently died, but I was planning on replacing it anyway. I decided to replace it with an EVGA GTX 960 2GB Superclocked, the single fan version (so it should fit perfectly inside the Dell case). My concern is about the power needed: a 400W PSU is recommended and I have the stock 460W Dell PSU. Will the GPU run ok with the stock PSU? (In fact, the old video card required more power than this GTX 960). I was reading online that the Dell PSU is prone to fail and I don't want to take that risk. If I replace the PSU as well, what PSU do you recommend?

How can I escape booting into the Safe Mode portal?

Any good and tested advice will be appreciated.

If any other information will be helpful, please let me know.

Thanks.

A:Dell XPS 8300 Will only Boot in Safe Mode

You can try the following. Press F8 at boot and select Last Know Configuration

Type Msconfig in the search box and under the Boot tab make sure Safe Mode is not checked.

How long have you had this problem? If you have a Restore Point before the problem you can do a System Restore. Any files or folders added to the desktop since the restore point will be gone so copy those to your documents folder before doing the system restore. Any programs added since the restore point would need to be re-installed.

Type CMD in the search box. Right click > Run as Administrator and type

sfc /scannow

This will look for any corrupt system files and replace them.
