# Correct Amperage?

Q: Correct Amperage?

Hi all, I've lost the adapter for my MSI GX630 notebook and now I'm on the hunt for a replacement. The exact model that I'm looking for is a LITEON PA-1121-04 model. I have found some replacements but there are usually some things off about these replacements, ether the connector size is wrong or the power rating is incorrect. The adapter has a power rating of 19V 6.3A and the closest replacement I've found has that of 19V 6.5A. I'd like to know if this 0.2A difference is too dangerous for my machine, or if i should continue searching for one with 6.3A specifically?

Also, are there any websites where you would suggest I look for an adapter like the one I'm looking for? Any help would be appreciated.

A: Correct Amperage?

The amperage is drawn, so it has to be same or HIGHER. The plug has to fit (obviously) and the wattage has to be exactly the same, but yes, you can safely use an adapter with higher amperage.

I have my PSU's details from a goggled page, but was wondering if anyone can help decode that garbage cause I dont understand any of it.
this is my psu, http://tekgems.com/Products/et-45409-pwr-ak680.htm

It says there is 1 12v connector, but it lists
# +12V, 20A
# +12V, 20A

2 times.

So can someone help debunk this text? And let me know my real amperage and if I can use a newer videocard. Cause the 260Gtx Nvidida card I want needs 12V current rating of 38A or more

I want to put my slim USB DVD drive on an USB hub, but my hub did not come with a cable.
I thought oh well, and grabbed a used Nokia charger which didn't work. turns out I need an adapter that is 5V and minimum 2A. I found an adaptor that is 5V but 8A, but I'm not sure if 8A may be bad and kill my drive.

You can make it work, but might be cheaper to just buy one. 8 amps dc is an aweful lot. if HD needs 2 amps I would not

Hey peeps,

I just been reading Punksters sticky on upgarding graphics cards.

Read down to the tables and read about my 570 and i think i may be in trouble.

Currently i only have the one 570 and according to that table, the 570 uses 40A on its own.

Now i popped over to Thermaltakes site and looked up my card and to my amazment i read this table -

Now, i have no idea if my card is on +12V1 or +12V4 (Did'nt even know this but i am guessing the +12V4 is for 8-pin plugs and the formaer for 6-pin plugs, just a guess).

But to add to this, i had a 470 running as my main card before and this was overclocked quite a lot by me (its a standard 470). can't remeber my clocks of hand but they were high.

I never had a problem with power, i.e. random shutdowns.

So, to get to my point, am i pushing my luck using this PSU with this card plus my 470 running as physx or is it high time to upgrade this.

Don't really want to go down upgrade route as i have one mother of powerful PSU that would just be wasted.

Or am i just being a worry warts, sorry but i have spent a lot of money on my little HAF-ey and really don't want to have to spend anymore.

No it doesn't. That number is the recommended for everything; CPU, video card, ram, etc, not just the video card.

Probably a good guess.

So here's a question for those who are electronically inclined.

I deal with a lot of laptops which do not have their original power supplies. So we usually match up the connector, voltage and amperage. However, there's not always an exact match.

What are the dangers of power supplies rated for higher / lower voltages than recommended?

What are the consequences of higher / lower amperage than recommended?

And assuming Volts x Amps = Watts (From what I've figured out), do you suppose this would work?

Suppose I have a laptop designed for 15v / 3a. This is roughly 45w, correct? What if I were to use a 19v / 2.3a power supply? Does the total wattage dictate whether the laptop will get fried or not? Or do the amp/voltage ratings fry by theirselves?

The fellows at work tell me higher amps is the killer, but higher votlages are okay (within reason). From my own obverservations, this is not the case. It looks more like higher voltages kill, while higher amperages make no difference. I successfully used a number of lower voltage, higher amperage power supplies, but toasted some equipment (not laptops, thank goodness!) with higher voltage, correct amperage power supplies.

A:Amperage vs Voltage - Which is more dangerous?

It depends, if you are speaking of dangers to humans then amps(current) is the concern. Components are a different story, in general, the voltage is usually the concern with most components because the current is drawn by the device. Just because your power source can deliver 15A doesn't mean you are delivering 15A, if the device only draws 5A, then only 5A will be used. On the other end of this, if I have a source that can deliver 16v, but my device only requires 12v, the 16v will likely kill the device. Some devices can handle it longer than others, some will die instantly.

In short, your source has a max current it can deliver, but the amount delivered is dictated by the load.

Hey dude,

Just out of curiosity, how do u find out what amperage is needed for a video card?
Are there any tool or just find it browsing reviews and so on?

Also My PSU has three 12v rails and all three are 18 amps,
Are the three 12v rails the 2x6 pin and 4 pin connectors?

what will happen if you are using a APC Back-UPS RS 800VA 230V with Cooler master extreme power 500w (RP-500-PCAR) PSU

the label behind my UPS says it has a 3.5A max output where as my PSU's input requirement is [email protected] i have been using this setup for almost 2 years but now my UPS has stopped working. After powering on the UPS continuously beeps and the red "overload" indicator starts flashing (the technical support confirmed its a permenant damage and requires replacement).

the website has conflicting information on the ammpere rating, the manual and the rear (www apcmedia com/salestools/ASTE-6Z7V4E_R1_EN.pdf) of my UPS mentions it's 3.5A but the technical specs here www apc com/resource/include/techspec_index.cfm?base_sku=BR800-IN says the output is 6A.

now which is right and where can i find the exact details of my UPS. tried to contact the online chat support but there is no representative and the email response link is also down.

so could low ampere ouput cause damages to PSU? after the replacement can i continue using the same UPS or should i choose a higher specification model please help

Vivek

sorry this is a double post, i changed the subject which resulted in a duplicate post

A:Cooler Master 500 PSU amperage?

The 6A rating you see as part of the technical specs is for the connectors, not for the output power of the UPS IMO.

Insufficient power will not damage your PSU as much as it will damage your UPS via an overload. This is probably why it is not working anymore and the "Overload" light is flashing. Your PSU will try to pull as much power as it needs to convert to DC, and nothing more. Have you recently upgraded your system with a more powerful GPU, CPU or more HDDs? That may be the reason for the overload.

Both ext HD and Scanner's power supply have 12V DC outputs. Also the plug jack is the same. The only different is the scanners power supply is only rated at 1.25 Amp where as the Hard Drive power supply is rated at 3 Amp output. I realize that I could not use the scanner's lower amp output power supply on the HD, but is shouldn't be any problem using the 12V DC, 3 A power output for the Scanner.

Is this the way you see it?

Hey there guys,

Well I live in Mexico, so getting good PC parts isn't very easy. My local retailers have a terrible supply of PSUs, mainly consisting of generic units, and a few low-end coolermaster units.

There is an online shop where I do most of my shopping, and the best PSU I could find for a low price was the CoolerMaster Real Power Pro RS-650 650W or the iGreen Power 600W.

Now the thing is, in the sticky I read that the best thing for my system would be a single +12V Rail with 26A. This specific PSU runs 3 rails at 19A each, how would this compare? Is it a decent buy? I'm highly attracted by the PSU's 80% efficiency rate too.

A:1 High amperage +12V rail Vs. 3 normal amp +12V rails?

3 rails with 19A on each will suffice, unless you're running a rediculously good GPU. I'm running a 6800GT on 17A 500W PSU i bought for £20 off the market lol. In realistic terms, i should have atleast 19-21A for my system to run at it's best - however it's doing just fine as it is.

My old HP model 7955, 1.5GHz, has a mere 200 watt power supply. I'm getting into video capturing and have started having reboot problems well into the capture process. I was told my problem may be heat related (cpu or ?). Keep in mind, I'm a novice and not a gamer (nothing against you guys). I'm getting into digitizing analog vhs and 8mm tapes and burning the edited product to dvd.....and I need help....and lots of it.

I've looked at several video cards (to upgrade my nVIDIA RIVA TNT2 (mere 32MB card) because my computer indicated after the second reboot (via a dialog box) that my nighed driver needs to updated). But I was thinking about going with a 128MB card instead. But, here's the problem. Most all new video cards I've looked at require a minimum of 250 watt power supply (for instance the eVGA eforce FX5500 128MB or 256MB does).

Here are my questions: Can I run a video card that requires 250 watts on my 200 watt power supply without problem? Could this be my reboot problem? Is it difficult to swap out a power supply? Do I have to be concerned about anything in the power supply spec's besides wattage, like voltage and amps? Does my computer's motherboard (ASUS P4B-LA but I'm told it's really P4B-LU???) require a specific power supply with specific voltages and amperage? I need help here to decide what I need to do and why I need to do it.

I hope this makes sense. If not, please query me about anything you need in ord... Read more

my netgear wg511 came in today. i tried installing it on my notebook which is a p2-400 running win98 (non SE). i installed the drivers 1st like the directions said, then windows detected the card and it installed some more files from the win98 cd this time.
however, device manager keeps telling me that there's a problem:
"the ndis.vxd, ntkern.vxd device loader(s) for this device could not load the device driver. (code 2.)"
then it says to click "this" to fix the problem. and when i click it will search the netgear and win98 cd but will still find the same file 'netwg511.inf' in the windows dir on my hdd and tells me its already installed. and when i click next to reinstall the driver, it does so, but doesn't fix the problem.
in device mgr there is also "unknown device" which everytime i remove it windows installs it when i reboot (even if i tell it not too). it has always been there and the irq isn't conflicting w/ the pc-card... but the "unkonwn device" and the wg511 both have ! next to them...
can anyone help me out? i don't know how to proceed next...

originally posted in this thread about a kernel PnP warning showing in Event viewer. Kernel-PnP warning

I stated i kept getting this warning in 100's in my event viewer, plus PC go into boot loop on restarts only and that part was solved with BIOS update. Also stated as long as i had this system with Windows 8.1 Pro 64bit my USB 3.0 speeds were very slow.

With Windows 8.1 i saw this and read about the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver that Win 8.1 uses it's own, Intel does not supply one for 8.1 or 8. I have Microsoft Driver that i am sure most have with Win8.1
http://Intel? USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver

I felt this was reasoning with my USB 3.0 issues, the driver. Gigabyte possibly thought might be the board.
When using a USB 3.0 External Hard drive i am getting between 50mbs -100mbs ,even slower then USB 2.0, tried different drives and tested each.

Question is i came across a thread in a forum on researching this problem, someone said to go to Disk Management when drive is hooked up, right click the drive and select Properties, then select Policies. Under policies 2 choices, Quick Removal (Default) and Better performance, first one disables write caching and second one enables it. Said to select Better Performance.

Seems when i choose Better performance now my USB 3.0 has incredible speeds on USB 3.0, some as fast as 2GHZ transfer, some at 1.36GHZ.

Question is is this correct to do, i see internal drives are set this way, but enables write... Read more

A:could this be correct way ?

Definitely will increase speed but definitely need to use safe removal if enabled. Sometimes data to be written will sit in the cache until you safely remove it, then it will write after you click and then will let you know it can be removed. Not doing this can result in corrupted files.

PS: I would not check it for your internal HDD.

I'm not sure if this post should be in the networking forum...but I'm posting it here since I'm using Win XP Pro SP3 and having problems with the IP address in it. I put the system together, installed the OS, installed the drivers, and even installed all the updates from the Windows Update site. Now when I boot the computer and it's trying to acquire an IP address from the router I use, it doesn't assign it a 192.168.x.x like it should for private IP, instead my network adapter shows an address of 169.254.x.x, and shows the taskbar balloon saying that I have limited or no connectivity. I have no clue why it started doing this now. All the other computers connected to the same router have no problem acquired correct IP address and accessing the Internet, just having issues with this one system. Any help is greatly appreciated.

A:Not getting correct IP

Go to device manager and see any drivers are flagged?

169.254...ect means nonexistant ip which is normal if your missing the network driver.

My wife's computer periodically issues 'bootmgr is missing' on boot. I use an Acronis boot disk in those instances to successfully load Windows. Norton comes up clean and so does Malwarbytes. I ran the Norton Eraser in the event there was a rootkit problem and it too came up clean.

Therefore I'm assuming there's something messed up with the MBR.

I've researched repairing the boot loader and found 2 similar but different command prompt commands and wish to get a clarification here before I proceed.

Method 1: Select command prompt from the system recovery options on the OS disk. Type 'bootrec /fixmbr' to restore the master boot record.

Method 2: At the command prompt, successively type each of the following commands followed by a CR:
bootrec /FixMbr
bootrec /FixBoot
bootrec /RebuildBcd

Not sure if I am in right section, but I do have a vague security concern.

I have been having real problems with an ISP & so have been measuring my down- & up-load speeds for past few weeks using ookla. As you will know, this has a graphic showing one's location, & then the ping server location. I was generally shown in the "correct geographical area" ie London until recently, when it looked as if I had migrated to Scotland. Ths change in location is quite consistent & marked.

I was fiddling around today & checked http://whatismyipaddress.com/ - completely different from my IP address obtained via W8.1's IPv4 details on my actual computer. This "wrong" address does however show my correct ISP. My concern is that eg "projecthoneypot.org" shows spam originating from this address, altho it gives it a current clean bill of health.

I tend to be fairly careful re downloads of freeware etc, & I also tend to turn off geolocation requests & do not use "social media" other than email & skype if I can help it. However, some weeks back I managed to pick up a rather nasty PUP that I had to use a range of tools to get rid of it (eg mbam, rkill, jrt etc).

So long & short of this ramble is that "something" made ookla decide I had moved to Scotland - should I be concerned? I have given my HHD & software pretty good clean outs with a range of AV tools (from CCleaner to SuperSpyWare to Avast & AVG) but day to day protection... Read more

But the ram is going to give me problems, Correct me if I am wrong but can I use DDR2 533 in motherboards that take a higher frequency ram? Just not in lower frequency ram? I bought her 2 gigs of it but would like some options in overclocking on her pc (I build my own) so this is a new experience for me. She got it because it came with a free 19 inch LCD

So guess the question is Can I get a board that takes DDR2 667 and throw this ram in there for now? Its DDR2 533

Again thanks guys.

I've been doing a load of research and am I correct in think PIA.com uses Black listed IP addresses. Hence that?s the god damn reason I cant torrent. I've been at this for two days solid and my *** is killing me from being so numb. I can't get the torrent service up and running threw the Netherlands, Denmark or France.

I've been reading they use different ranges of IP Addresses and their are entire lists of them being blocked.

PIA and TORGuard dealing with the fallout of blocking IP Address Ranges from Companys like NetFlix ECT:

So basically I can't torrent at all with PIA from what I can tell.

A:WTF: Is this correct what I'm seeing hear with PIA.com ..

Never had issues using PIA with any tracker.

Media companies like Netflix and some sites, will look for known VPN IP ranges.

I'm considering installing some additional PC133 SDRAM into an old clunker eMachine 130DVD (so I obviously have way too much time on my hands ). The crucial.com on-line scanner says that the maximum for this machine (which has a Imperial/Glendale m/b) is 512MB (2 x 256) but the Memory.Ten site database (http://www.memoryx.net/emem/3me.html) which was recommended to me by the potential seller, says max is 256MB (2 x 128) which is what I currently have installed. So before throwing away more cash who do I trust?

Also, what is it that determines the maximum RAM or maximum individual module size a particular m/b can handle? Is it something inherent in the design or components used or is it related to the BIOS? If it is the BIOS would an upgrade have any impact on the maximum RAM?

A:will this fan have the correct connection?

It's listed with a 3 pin connector. It doesn't appear to be a Molex type, so it should work.

If you want a PWM fan, though, look elsewhere. (Requires a 4 pin.)

I am trying to recover data off of the hard drive from my acer laptop. I bought an external enclosure, and plugged it into the usb port. The area on the bottom right hand corner with the mini icons said that the usb was hooked up. Under properties, it said that it was working correctly. But when I click and look in my computer, it is not listed at all. So how do I get my puter to not just recognize it but read it? Do I need a program? Is it a power supply problem?

This is what I did:

control panel > back up and restore > create a system image > then C and D drives were copied successfully onto an external hard drive.

Now - few questions if I can!

1. Does that mean that with my burned system repair disk, can I now go ahead and re-isntall C and D exactly as they were?

2. C and D are inextricably linked - is that an issue or will a system re-install using this saved partitions recognise that?

3. If I re-install these saved partitions does it ask, "shall we place old C into new C and old D into new D?"

Thanks!!

A:Is this (clone) correct?

Hello Lister,

Q1) Yes, you will be able to use your system repair disc to boot into the System Recovery Options screen to do a System Image Recovery with.

Q2) If you had C and D included in the system image backup, then they will both be restored exactly as they were.

Q3) No. Doing a System Image Recovery will delete what you currently have on the drives that were included in the system image backup, then restore the system image backup exactly how the included drives were when it was created.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

I'm I not right in saying that when performing a clean install you should make sure the drivers for any device in the Device Manager is downloaded before going through the normal procedure which is Chipset,Video,Audio, modem Network, and Programs etc? This is for Windows Vista Home Premium.
Or would you follow the order I stated and then include any other drivers that may not be installed and also update?

please post any screenshot or any link with screenshots if possible........i'll be very thankful..!!!!

In your BIOS you should have a setting that will allow you to manually clock your ram. You might have to enable the option if it is off. That is where you can adjust the frequency of the ram to 1333.

Should I click on 'OK' or 'X'? The reason I ask is because I hadn't been able to accomplish the updates for Adobe Flash since version 11.9.900.170. I believe it had been updating itself approx. the same time as Patch Tues. but since that version it hasn't so finally took time earlier this morning to go to Adobe help & was directed to check my IE options, which were set the way the example showed BUT this time I clicked OK where as I believe I usually click X & "lo & behold" shortly after that I tried the update again( for about the 50th try) & it downloaded!

A:Correct way to get out of IE options?

Use the OK button if you want to save changes.

Are you really using IE9 or do you need to update your forum system specs info?

The motherboard I have is an Intel D945GCCRG1. On Intels website it says that it supports DDR2 533 or DDR2 400 MHz RAM:

http://www.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d945gccr/sb/CS-026627.htm

I've done a CPUID test on the system and it says that currently there is DDR2 - PC2-5300 RAM installed. If I'm correct then this is 333 MHz.

- Is it right that slower RAM then is supported can be installed?

- If this is right, then to add additional RAM it would be best to get another stick of PC2-5300?

A:RAM card correct?

I think I may have got that wrong. If the current RAM is a PC2-5300 then it's DDR2 667?

If the motherboard supposedly supports DDR2 533 or DDR2 400 MHz, then the RAM currently installed is too fast for the motherboard?

If that's the case then how is it running?

Click the arrow on the right-hand side of the dropdown and choose the highest resolution available for your setup.Click the Apply button and then the Ok button and check your webpges again.Cheers.OT

My friend has Vista basic 32 bit and I would like to remove and reinstall all the Microsoft C++ redistributables on her system.

1. is this safe to do?

2. can somebody please tell me which ones to install and if there is a particular order I should follow?
FYI, I am hoping it will solve a "side by side" error she is getting.

A:What are the correct C++ redistributables?

Hello!

1: Not particularly. Trying to uninstall will likely make the problem worse. These redestributables do not need to be uninstalled. Just install them again, on top of the old installation, and the problem will be fixed if this is the root cause.

2: All of them. In the order they were released.

FYI: Side by Side? Relatively common problem. In theory at least, my speciality. Follow both of the below posts:

Hello!

This is one of the very worst error messages to receive, and could be almost impossible to fix. Primarily, try what Lorien has suggested above, in particular System Restore. If absolutely necessary:

? Download and install the following VC++ Redistributables in the following order: 2005; 2005 SP1; 2008; 2008 SP1, 2010

? Install .Net Framework in the following order: 1.0 SP3; 1.1 SP1; 2.0 SP1; 3.0 SP1; 3.5 SP1, 4.0, Windows Installer 4.5

Hey,

When I created my User Account I named my Self Jack B..... (end of last name) It showed as JackB_000 for some reason, I thought it was because my Account name was to long. So I changed my full name into just my first name, the user account stayed the same, only changing to what I set in Metro and Start8 (Start8 is an alternative to Metro bringing back the start bar).

Thanks.

A:User Name not correct.

How to rename user account?

Avoid using spaces in the user name, and you'll be fine. You can set the display name the way you want in the user account settings (control panel).

Hey all,

Today I noticed on the Intel website there's a newer version of the Intel Rapid Storage driver (see here:

My problem is, I'm not sure if this is the right RST driver for my pc.
I have an Asrock Pro4 Z77 mobo with a Hitachi HDD in AHCI mode running on Windows 8 Pro 64 bit

Also, I noticed that the driver in the link is an AHCI version. A while ago I installed a RST driver without checking if it's for RAID or AHCI.
I looked in the Device Manager and I saw that the Storage controller seemed to have a Microsoft driver instead of Intel's RST. That is when I thought (and I could be wrong) maybe I've installed the wrong (RAID) driver. The IDE ATA/ATAPI controller group showed that I have an Intel 7 Series/C216 Chipset SATA AHCI Controller.

If the driver in the link is the correct one for my pc, is it safe to uninstall the old one and download the new version?

John

A:Is this the correct RST driver?

Here is the link to the Intel automatic updater. It will scan your system and show any available updates.

I've used that on both my Gigabyte and ASRock Z77 Professional Fatal1ty motherboards.

Is there anything wrong with my HJT log?

Maybe it is my Antivirus/Firewall? Should I uninstall them, now that the subscription has expired?

What about all my P2P programs, are they likely to cause a problem?Click to expand...

I won't have P2P (peer to peer) programs on my computer.

I use AVG 7 Free Personal Edition anti-virus and Sygate Personal Firewall, also free.

When you are SURE of the item on the HJT screen put it in the Ignore list so that only new things are shown. That way it it easier for you to see what has arrived on your system.

Run HJT just after doing a clean install, and when you know that what is on the drive should be there, put all the good entries in the exclusion list so that, if you have a problem, you can see at a glance what has been added that shouldn't be there.

You can also use RegCleaner 4·3 which marks added programs as NEW until you identify them and mark them as OLD, so any NEW programs which self install can be spotted.

Then make sure that these two entries are unchecked in Internet Explorer:

"Activate install on demand" [Other] , and, "Activate install on demand" [Internet Explorer]

So if you can see something wrong with MY Hijack This log from a fully updated Windows XP Professional, please let me know.

I have two identical HP Laptops, both HP Pavilion Entertainment PC dv9700. One works and one is cratered; I brought the dead one home for parts, of course.

I checked the RAM in the working one and there are two sticks, 1 GB each, while the dead one had two sticks of 2 GB each, so I changed them out.

The working computer booted just fine, however when I checked the RAM, it shows only 3GB installed.

Is there anything I can check to see why this is?

hi there
i bought a IOGEAR Bluetooth usb adapter for my computer now i want to get the right driver for it but here starts the fun
on the USB is written "GBU521" on the mini CD that came with the adapter is written "GBU521.GBU521W6" when i plugged in the adapter in my PC Windows automatically downloaded the drivers for it and the name in "Devices And Printers" is "BCM20702A0"
so what is the correct device name to be able to get the "latest" driver?

(i know that i am able to just install the software that came with the adapter [on the mini CD] but i don't want to as in
1. i bought it on ebay so i don't know if i could trust 100% percent the guy that sold it that this is indeed the correct driver [i don't want any BSOD'es from this]
2. i always like to go to the vendors site and get the latest drivers from there [it's better and safer]
3. now that i don't know what's the name [and that there already a driver installed] i don't want to start up with my PC and get a BSOB)
(and yes i know that why not leave it as it is? well i still want a hard copy of the latest driver as i am not always on a internet accessible PC)

thanks in advance to all THANK YOU

You wrote in the help on Spybot:

Important Note: For people using the new version 1.3, it is ignoring a few malware products by mistake so it will not find them. To fix this click on the Mode menu option at the top and click on Advanced Mode. Reply Yes to the confirmation when it asks you. This will change the screen and give you different options. Click on Settings on the left hand side and then click on the Ignore Products section. Click on the All Products tab, and scroll through all the listed products and make sure there are no checkmarks in any of them. If there are, remove the check marks. Then click on the Mode menu option and switch back to Default Mode again.
Should we do this for the 1.4 version??? I ask becasue it says "are you sure? you could damage your system if you don't know what you are doing."

Thanks!

Hello,

I've been fighting this for a few days but don't know what to do at this point.

I started having problems all of a sudden. I don't remember exactly what, but it showed up when I went to open something and I received an "Open With" dialog box. Everything I tried to open brought that up. I had someone help me and found something in the registry to kill and I could open things again. I tried a system restore, going back to the oldest date it said it had, Dec 7. It tried but said it couldn't. Tried Dec 8, same failure. Dec 9, same failure. Abandoned this and proceeded with other scans. I started running AVG in safe mode to kill/quarantine viruses. I did that, then ran Malwarebytes in safe mode. I then ran SuperAntiSpyware in safemode. I tried to follow instructions and reboot after each of these. I was doing much better and could actually use my computer again. That was earlier today.

Then tonight, in between things, I searched for some sites about how to make a craft for someone. After this I received a notice from AVG of a threat and that it was caught but I needed to close things and reboot. I saved my work and rebooted as instructed. After the reboot, I tried to open Google Chrome and was met with an "Open With" dialog. Argh! I closed that and tried Firefox. Nothing, but after some time had passed it finally opened up, but with file:///C:/Program Files/Mozilla Firefox/firefox.exe in the address bar. I typed in google.com and w... Read more

Hi,

Is you PC a DELL & have you installed the operating system that from a DELL recovery disk? If you have & your system is not a DELL, your system is not legal!

You will need the corect recovery disks from the manufacturer.

If it is legal, use the recovery disks or to continue from where you are now: -

Download the drivers on a differrent PC, burn to CD/ DVD & install.

Following a MB replacement and Repair installation of XP Home, everything working OK except for Autorun of audio CD's ( the cd tracks are shown in an explorer window instead of playing or allowing me to select a program to play them, also no Autorun feature in the menu when I R-click my cd drive - this feature is on my 2nd PC ) anyway, decided to run sfc /scannow. Insert
XP cd and when showing on screen Exit it then run sfc /scannow.

Failure, it wants a XP Professional SP1 CD. No matter what I try, Safe Mode etc no joy. I have never owned XP Pro, I upgraded using this cd of XP Home bought from a retailer.

Can anyone tell me how to run sfc, obviously something is up in the Registry.

Welcome to TSG, midtexodes.

With XP right-click on an empty area on your desktop and go to Properties > Settings >

If you are having problems with applications not displaying correctly it may be because you

need to reboot the computer for the settings to take effect.

I run a mail server on my DSL service (which the provider is fine with), however yesterday I had to restart my modem which after the IP address changed when the modem connected again everything stopped working..

The mail server runs a wget script to update freedns with the current IP address, which it has successfully done. However when I ping my domain (carsons.net.au) I'm getting the old IP address.

The server has been updating records which has worked for the past 18 months - nothings changed. I'm guessing this is a DNS issue somewhere that is probably out of my hands, but I'd like to know if anyone has any suggestions?

I have a client - we have been out to their site several time to fix virus issues. He has a small home/office network with about 5 XP boxes hooked to it.

We have formated two of the systems - and no sooner than we format them and replace the virus scan (norton) and Spy Removal software he seems to get a virus. He has children that have been known to play on the systems- but we told him that he needed to password the systems - he did but used his wifes name or something simple.

Anyway, long short - his kids have a laptop that they also play with on the same network and go all over the place with it. Needless to say when we cleaned that system it was packed with crap! Well they are still connected to the network and my thought is that this is were the problem is - that and the fact that the other users the owner and his wife always seem to click on pop-ups even after we explained to them not to do this!

He know wants to stiff me for all the work - 20 hours of it. I explained that his problem is his children playing on the network (he is unwilling to take them off or restrict them).

What do you folks think??? Should this guy get his kids off the network? Do you think they are causing it? Is it possible a virus could hand around after a format (I don't know how)?

Okay this has bugged me for a long time and I want to set this up right. On our domain without logon scripts we have a bunch of computers none of them are time synced with anything. Short of doing a "NET TIME /SETSNTP:Server" command at each workstation is there anyway I can get my server to broadcast that it should be the time server to all of the clients and get them synched up that way? Also on a side note if my perferred method is not possible can anyone tell me if the above command can be ran from people who are not admins on their machines?

A:No PC's have the correct time.

You say you don't use logon scripts, but why not create a temporary one just for the purpose of 'sync-ing' all of your times. You could assign it to all users, then once every station has been logged on to, de-allocate it from everone again!

Hi,

I've just done a system Infomation check on my PC, i noticed it stated the following:

Total physical memory: 768.00MB
Available physical memory: 508.18MB

Does this mean my computer is not using all the memory which i have installed?

A:Memory Correct?

Windows seldom uses all the available memory, or it would just crash.

Some programs are optimised to use "most" of it, but many are optimised to use only a percentage and use "virtual memory" (page file) for the rest. This allows multitasking programs to all get a fair go.

As an example, MS Office versions 20002 and earlier refuse to use more than about 512 MB, while Office 2003 now uses as much as you have, but shares with other applications.

OpenOffice uses everything itself, so its no good expecting multitasking programs to perform well, there isn't much left.
